A drive to promote women living and working in the primary industries in New Zealand and abroad was launched recently. AgWomen Global celebrates all women who help shape the primary industries, no matter the size of the part they play. AgWomen is a year-long project celebrating and sharing unique stories from 365 different women, all who have contributed in shaping the primary industries. Changes to farmhouse deductibility With farmers spending an increasing amount of time in the office, or at the kitchen table as is the case for many farmers across New Zealand, the changes to the deductibility of farmhouse expenses may come as a surprise. “With changes impacting farmers for the 2017/2018 financial year, it is important they take the time to find out how the changes could affect them,” said Tony Marshall, Agribusiness tax specialist for Crowe Horwath. Since the 1960s, the IRD has allowed full-time farmers a deduction of 25% of farmhouse expenses without any evidentiary support. Inland Revenue Group Tax counsel Graham Tubb says that this has allowed some farmers to claim deductions for private spending. Recently the IRD finalised the proposed Farmhouse Expenditure Interpretation Statement. A key part of the statement revolves around a distinction being made between farming businesses where the cost of the farmhouse, including curtilage and improvements is 20% or less of the total cost of the farm (Type 1 farms), compared to those where the value is more than 20% of the total cost of the farm (Type 2 farms). “Where farmers fail the Type 1 test based on cost, they can apply a market valuation to ensure that they pass the test,” said Mr Marshall. “This would be relevant when a farm has been owned for a significant period of time, but a new farmhouse has been built recently.” Mr Marshall has summarised the notable highlights of the statement as follows:

• 20% default deduction for farmhouse expenditure for Type 1 farms, down from the previous 25% deductibility. Taxpayers remain free to complete their own calculation if the claim exceeds 20%. • 100% interest deduction for Type 1 farms. • 100% rates deduction for Type 1 farms. • Minimum 50% deduction for telephone rental costs. Any farmer who is not Type 1 will likely see a large drop in deductions for farmhouse expenses, particularly around interest. This will hit those particularly hard that fall into the Type 2 category, which could be the likes of kiwifruit farms, orchardists and the bloodstock industry where the farming activity is full time but the cost of the farmhouse relative to the total farm is significant,” Mr Marshall said. “However, Type 1 farmers will not go unaffected. They will still have a 5% drop in deductions for farmhouse expenditure such as repairs and maintenance, electricity and the likes. The telephone rental deduction could drop to 50% — not huge numbers in the whole scheme of things, but still a drop. “It is important farmers are prepared for potential changes to their deducibility, including that they may need evidentiary proof to support higher farmhouse deductions. If they have any questions, they should contact their adviser.”

Bella Vacca BY Ann Morgan

Sharemilkers Gavin Hogarth and Jodie Hansen milk their herd of 180 pedigree Jerseys and Brown Swiss/Jersey cross cows on an 81 hectare property in the Bay of Islands and are about to produce Bella Vacca milk for sale.

“G

avin’s parents and grandparents were involved in farming but he originally pursued a different career and eventually returned to farming,” says Jodie. “I am an accountant by trade and was not involved in farming until my son went sharemilking. He asked me to help him for a month and I stayed a year doing 50/50 with him and found I really loved it.” It was during this time some 13-yearsago that Jodie and Gavin met and they have been dairy farming ever since. “We have been sharemilking for Pat and Lynn Goodhew for six seasons now

and I believe they are some of the best farm owners in the country.” Jodie also works for Sumpter Baughen accounts splitting her time between Whangarei, Ruawai, and Kerikeri. “I work part time due to the low dairy payout. I am a bit spoilt as I get to come back to the farm.” The couple have been in the top five percent for milk quality across New Zealand for the past two years. “You get no extra payout for top quality and we decided we would like to take more control over our income.” They are in the process of setting up a boutique milk processing plant. It has

been a challenging journey but they are progressing forward. “We looked at selling raw milk but the restrictions are tight and I didn’t want to be a milk delivery boy. Gavin was a milk boy at school and doesn’t want to be one again either. “We decided to research pasteurising milk as the other issue is if you are not used to drinking raw milk it can be a challenge and by pasteurising it everyone will be able to drink it. “We are going to sell full cream pasteurised milk in glass bottles at markets and through dispensing machines. Initially we will start in Kerikeri and then Whangarei and grow from there.” The label is black and white and screen printed making it very unique. The picture of the cow on the label is one of the farm cows named Bella Vacca Amy. “We decided to go black and white and keep it simple with a rustic look and glass is environmentally friendly.” The milk comes from their farm making the process more sustainable for the two couples. “Our cows don’t have stress and that helps with the quality. We are all about keeping the animals happy and well. “We keep the cowshed stress free and there is no hitting them to get up and move.

“We farm as sustainably as possible and we want to leave the land in good condition if not better than it was when we first came here. “We are not organic because if we have a sick cow we want to be able to give them antibiotics if necessary to get them healthy again but even then we use the minimal amount.” Jodie says feeding their cows well is the top priority to them. “Depending on the time of year and weather conditions depends on what they are fed. “They predominantly eat the grass but due to the dry at the moment we ensure they are fully fed with silage, palm kernel extract, condensed distillers’ syrup, molasses, sorghum and hay. “We let our cows harvest the grass as this is the cheapest form of harvest and we purchase hay and silage.” Jodie says people are definitely interested in where their food comes from and how the animals are cared for. “They want less processed food and having our milk available will be one way to get good milk.” The only process is the pasteurising which kills any possible bugs. The milk is heated to 72 degrees for about 15 seconds and then it is cooled immediately. “It is wholesome, creamy milk like in the old days with nothing added. Those

The milk comes direct from the Bella Vacca jersey herd

who try it will definitely notice a big difference even in the colour, it is more cream rather than stark white. “We will have little wooden milk bottle carriers that carry four bottles at a time so you can bring the empty bottles back

to the market and swap them for full ones. We are very positive about the dairy industry and are proud to be dairy farmers and look forward to sharing our good quality milk with others in the near future.”

Rose and Carl Cookson have been farming Red Devons for 12 years on their 300 acre block in South Hokianga.

“I

don’t have a farming upbringing, but I’ve always had a yearning to live on a farm and run one since I was about 14. In the school holidays I used to go and stay on guest farms, ” says Rose. “My family emigrated to New Zealand from South Africa in 1978 and I went to school in Christchurch and ended up in Lincoln college. I studied there for a couple of years but I didn’t actually complete my degree in agriculture unfortunately as I had to get out into the workforce and earn some money.”

Eventually she made some money and married Carl. Together they brought a small farm in Te Araroa on the East Cape. “We had 40 acres on the river flats. We ran goats and horses and we did beekeeping. So that was our first experience back on the land.” Eventually they saved enough to buy the farm they are on now. When they first bought it, “it was very run down. We are a hill farm and we have quite a bit of bush and the fencing was basically non existent when we

Carl and Rose enjoying a horse trek in Hokianga moved up here. We did everything on horseback which was good but it was a bit tricky getting animals out of the bush with no fences back then.” With their new land they wanted something fairly low input and were interested in cattle. So they went with the Red Devon breed. “Red Devons have such a good quiet temperament. They’re not a huge breed and they are very easy calvers. We wanted an animal that we didn’t have to keep a good eye on over calving time” says Rose. “They also finish very early on good grass as they put weight on very well. There is quite a good market for Red Devons in general as the breed is getting out there, which is great. “We sell quite a few bulls to dairy farmers which is where we make our money. “We have met quite a few other breeders and we’ve formed a group called the Progressive Red Devons where we share genetics so everyone gets a share of the good genes. That’s helped us a lot.”

Rose and Carl have 60 mixed age breeding cows and 40 young bulls and heifers. In summer “we can kick back a bit and put our efforts into the other side of the business, as my husband’s an engineer part time. He designs and fixes farm systems like yards and cow sheds.” Spring and winter are the busiest time of year for Rose and Carl. “We feed out hay and it’s calving so that’s full time” says Rose. Testing and animal health also keeps them busy, as well as keeping up with general maintenance like fencing. They have also been working on planting trees. “We’ve planted on the

steep area to stabilise the land and to provide shelter. We also fence off native trees and we are trying to get possums under control to get the birds back,” says Rose. The oldest cows they have are around nine years old. “We don’t really keep them much past that as we sell them on to someone who has a flatter farm because the hills are hard on them and having to forage means they walk a lot. But they will breed into their 20s as long as you look after them.” Rose says that “we are really proud of our herd in general. All the calves we get every year have been so good and they’ve just gotten better and better.“

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ayla Miller

Janine and Andrew Williams moved to Hukerenui from Auckland 14 years ago in search of a healthier lifestyle and land to raise their family on.

T

hey soon realised the property they had purchased, 30 minutes out of Whangarei, was well suited to growing plums and established an orchard on their 10 acre mixed terrain property, calling it Hukerenui Gardens. The couple brought with them their five children. Edward, Robert, Rebecca, Emily and Susie. “We wanted a place where our children could run around and not be cruising the malls,” Janine said. “We did all the typical newbie lifestyle block things. We got every kind of animal and established a big vegetable garden and chickens.” They chose to plant plums recognising their location was

prone to frosts. “We decided to put in Luisa plums. They have yellow flesh and are a very big, sweet fresh eating plum. They aren’t very good for bottling and supermarket don’t carry them because they bruise very easily. They are better suited to the growers’ market or being sold from the side of the road. “I don’t like to waste anything so the ones I couldn’t sell fresh I made into sauce and jam. I found they weren’t ideal for this without being mixed with red plums so we planted a lot of reds and these days we have quite a variety.” Janine is a regular at the Whangarei Growers Market which she says has been great.

“I used to go as a customer and loved it. Then I shared a stall with my neighbour selling my plums for a while and eventually got my own stall.” When the family first moved up the land was mostly grazing with some bush. The property also has a natural spring so they have a good water supply. “We were searching for the idyllic country lifestyle and a healthy lifestyle for our children. Andrew was thinking of animals and raising our own beef and I was thinking of fruit trees. We were both wanting a big vegetable garden. “We didn’t buy the property with the purpose of being growers at all. It just kind of happened.” The family put down a vegetable garden and now grow enough seasonal produce that they are at the Whangarei Growers Market almost all year around and the Kerikeri Packhouse Market over Summer. Janine has even written a book called Homesteading Rescue Remedy which is about what to do when owning a lifestyle block becomes overwhelming. It is currently available as an e-book from Amazon Kindle. She says people starting out should be aware that owning a lifestyle block is hard work. “I would not want to lead anyone into thinking it’s an easy life. Very healthy and satisfying but heaps of work.” Because of this Janine and Andrew employ the help of WWOOFers, which stands for willing workers on organic farms, to help with picking the plums and the vege gardens during the busy times. “We are not certified organic but

This sustainable management includes sourcing horse manure from their neighbour’s riding school, composting and mulching as much as they can. Activities to prevent the establishment of the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) have helped raise public awareness of what is a serious biosecurity threat. “This is a major agricultural pest worldwide, as well as a household nuisance. While it is found here from time to time, if it became established it would have significant economic and social impacts,” said Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy. “BMSB has been rapidly spreading across the world and there have been increasingly more finds detected at the New Zealand border. Three confirmed post border finds occurred during February, all reported by members of the public. “I applaud those members of the public who notified MPI of the suspected finds and enabled the Ministry to urgently investigate. Their actions are a great example of what we are seeking to achieve through the 2025 Biosecurity Direction Statement in having a biosecurity team of 4.7 million people.” As a result of the finds, MPI stepped up a local response in each case involving laboratory testing, site

inspections and deploying surveillance traps. None of the finds were part of an established population of stink bugs in the area. Other work underway includes detector dog training, research on the effectiveness of lures, obtaining approval for chemical sprays and public awareness advertising and campaigns. There is also mandatory treatments of vehicle and machinery pathways, and targeted verification inspections on sea containers. MPI will soon be visiting European exporters of high risk cargo and working with them to mitigate these risks. “MPI is also now investigating the potential use of parasitical ‘samurai’ wasps, and an application to the Environmental Protection Agency is planned for later this year,” said Mr Guy. “Biosecurity is a shared responsibility for all New Zealanders, so it is pleasing to have industry and the wider public helping out. Taratahi offers apiculture course to meet demand Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre is to deliver apiculture courses in Northland to meet the local honey industry’s rapid growth and need for skilled workers. New Zealand honey export values increased to a new record of $315 million for the year ended June 30 2016 — up 35% on the previous year, according to data from Ministry for Primary Industries. 684,046 hives were registered throughout New Zealand in June 2016, which is 16 per cent more than in June 2015.

The number of NZ businesses managing the hives has also increased from 5,551 in 2015 to 6,735 in 2016. Northland produces some of the highest grade manuka honey in the country and it’s estimated that the province has the potential to produce exports of the medical/cosmetic grade honey to the value of $70 million according to the Northland Regional

Growth Strategy. Taratahi Business Development Director Richard Wanhill said the rapid growth in the industry in Northland was being matched by a strong demand for courses in apiculture. “There is a huge demand for skills and lots of opportunity for careers in this growth industry. We are working closely with key industry people to ensure we are delivering the skilled workers they need,” Mr Wanhill said. Taratahi delivers practical vocational education for the primary sector so there will be plenty of hands-on learning opportunities in commercial apiaries as well as theory in the classroom. Courses are focussed on turning out work-ready employees and skilling up those who are already in the industry who are seeking a recognised qualification. Course content for the 34-week NCEA level three qualification includes: bees and their habitat, apiculture equipment,

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES

ADVERTORIAL

So, you’re thinking about keeping bees? Whether you want one or 1,000 hives, beekeeping can be a hugely rewarding hobby. Beehives take time; they need to be managed carefully, so before you get any hives, you should think about what you want to gain, and what you are willing to put in. It is also a good idea to gain practical experience, and your local beekeeping club is a great place to start. As well as giving you the opportunity to see what beekeeping is all about, you can also pick up handy tips from the experts. Most clubs hold regular meetings, which include current discussions and practical sessions to help new and old beekeepers alike. Read, read, read Buy or borrow a few good beekeeping books. Practical Beekeeping in New Zealand by Andrew Matheson and Murray Reid is a good book to start with. Exploring the Internet can also be a great resource, but be careful as there is some bad beekeeping advice out there. Consider your equipment It is important to consider the pros and cons of all options when it comes to deciding what equipment to buy, as it is a big investment and you’ll be living with your decisions for a long time. If you want your equipment to last, it is worth paying a little more for better

quality gear that will not fall apart or break. Allergies No matter how careful you are, you are bound to get stung at least once in your beekeeping life. For most people the reaction shouldn’t be too severe, however, some people can have severe reactions, called anaphylaxis. These should be treated seriously, with urgent medical attention. If you know that you or anyone around you may have a severe anaphylactic reaction to bee stings, then we recommend that an Epipen (adrenaline injection) is carried with you and that you are comfortable dealing with this type of emergency. Start small Even if you intend to scale up your beekeeping operation, it’s a good idea to start out with two or three hives. Although you hopefully have some practical experience by this point, keeping your own bees is a new challenge, and keeping your hive numbers low will give you an idea of what it takes, and whether your location works. It’s helpful to have two or more hives for comparison and for equalising winter stores and population for successful over-wintering.

Enjoy Congratulations — you’ve started your beekeeping journey! Beekeeping is one of the most enjoyable and interesting endeavours

hile pine forests can take up to 25 years from planting to harvest and returning profit, landowners may benefit from an income in the form of honey by planting manuka which only takes three to four years

to become viable as a food source for bees. There is a world-wide demand for manuka-sourced honey, with the value of our honey exports recorded at $27.4 million in November last year compared with $13.6 million a year earlier, according to the latest Statistics New Zealand data. Typical local retail prices for 500g of manuka honey are in the

region of $60. NFM general manager Neil Geerkens says “an obvious advantage of planting manuka is being able to generate an income for 10 years while waiting on pine.” “This is an ideal concept for a farm owner with a spare area of land that might not be as productive for farming. THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES species, therefore utilising a bit of land otherwise unused and having the ability to generate income off it.” Neil says the minimum area for planting should be at least two or three hectares and predominantly one single area rather than a lot of small patches of land This is because if hives are placed in a spaced out area it creates a sizeable distance the bees have to fly, expending more energy and ultimately causing them to produce less honey. An established beekeeper can provide hives to sit near the plants and arrangements can be made to ensure the hives are maintained on a regular basis. Manuka being planted by NFM is a high quality variety containing a higher content of Unique Manuka Factor, or UMF. Nursery growers have developed high grade manuka seed to allow strong UMF so the plants should produce a good number of flowers with excellent quality nectar to produce the best revenue. Another opportunity that Neil sees feasible for landowners is planting a mixture of both pine and manuka, taking well-planned approach so that factors such as shade caused by the pine tree as it grows don’t effect manuka productivity. Recently NFM has been working with Northland College which was trying to create an income from a forest block they owned which was partially logged.

Areas of higher concentrations will tend to be near crop harvest activities such as maize and kumara. Shelduck numbers are up on last year and as expected they will gather and forage around the chicory and maize crops. Black swan numbers appear to be similar to previous years, and the northern harbours are a favourite haunt for the birds, where they feed on the eelgrass out on the tidal flats. Method: 1) Bring a medium-size pot of salted water to the boil. Bring a full kettle to the boil. 2) Cook kumara in pot of boiling water until soft, 10-12 minutes. Drain and mash with butter and milk. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Keep warm. 3) While kumara is cooking, trim duck breasts of excess overhanging fat. Rub in Chinese five-spice and season both sides with salt. Heat a dry fry-pan (no oil) on medium heat. Cook duck breasts, skin-side-down, for 4-5 minutes until most of the fat has rendered out and the skin is golden brown. Turn breasts over and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes until duck is cooked through medium (the flesh inside should be a pale rosy pink). Set aside and cover with foil to rest for 5-10 minutes. 4) Drain liquid fat from pan, wipe it out with paper towels and reheat to medium heat. Pour in red wine and allow it to bubble away for 30 seconds. Add plums, plum juice, soy sauce, vinegar and sugar. Mash plums in the sauce with a fork and simmer for 2-3 minutes until sauce is slightly reduced. 5) Place bok choy in a dish and cover with boiling water. Leave to stand for 2-3 minutes until bright green and just tender. Drain and toss with sesame oil and soy sauce. Slice duck breasts on an angle. • To serve, spoon some kumara mash and bok choy onto each plate. Top with slices of duck breast and spoon over some plum jus.

other species of wildlife. Upland game bird hunting remains a favourite activity for mid to late season hunters. Good numbers for both pheasant and quail have been seen throughout the region with high survival rate of chicks due to the warm dry summer conditions that prevailed during January and February. Chemicals impacting on topsoils by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

A Sanskrit text written around 1500BC noted: ‘Upon this handful of soil our survival depends. Husband it and it will grow our food, our fuel and our shelter and surround us with beauty. Abuse it and the soil will collapse and die, taking humanity with it’. Soil is a magical substance, a living system that transforms the materials it encounters, making them available to plants. A handful of healthy soil contains more microorganisms than all the people who have ever lived on earth. To keep up with global demand for food, the UN estimates 6 million hectares of new farmland will be needed every year. Instead, 12 million hectares a year are lost through soil degradation. We wreck it then move on, trashing rainforests and other precious habitat as we go. The techniques of agrochemical production that were supposed to feed the world, now threaten us with malnutrition and starvation. In hindsight, the ‘chemical age’ although initially looking good, has not done life on our planet any favours, in fact, it has demineralised our soils resulting in nutrient deficient food, which in turn is increasing disease within all forms of life on our planet. Here at Agrissentials, we are fervently pushing multi-mineral, microbialrich fertilisers to increase quality and

production. Our system encourages worm life, essential for recycling all waste falling upon the land, back into topsoil. This is all part and parcel of Mother Nature’s system, which has been operating on our planet for the past 460 million years. United Nations FAO chose 2015 as the International Year of Soils. Soil is the largest pool of organic carbon, essential for mitigating and adapting climate change. In an era of water scarcity, soils are fundamental for its appropriate storage and distribution. Soil microorganisms boost soil’s ability to absorb carbon and mitigate desertification. According to FAO Director-General Jose Graziano de Silva, it can take up to 1,000 years to form one centimetre of topsoil, he urged investment in sustainable soil management, saying that would be cheaper than restoration. Incorrect! Providing degraded soil still contains some carbon, restoration would be cheaper and quicker. Agrissentials

recipe of multi-mineral, microbial-rich fertilisers is a formula for building humus (carbon) in the soil, and at the same time providing nutrient to plants, animals and people. In trials in topsoil of 50mm deep on a clay base, in Ruawai, Dargaville, during an eight-year period, the topsoil increased to a depth of 250mm and deeper in some areas of the dairy farm. It’s simple; our innovative soil building programme is based around Mother

Nature’s recycling system. The more carbon, the deeper the topsoil, the stronger the water retention. That leaves them free to grind their way through thick foliage and stems, mulching everything down to a fine consistency that easily decomposes and delivers nutrients right back to the soil. Mike Hamlin from Agriline — New Zealand’s importers of the Vigolo range — has had more than two decades’ experience with mulchers, and he has specified these machines to suit New Zealand conditions, adding a powerful new tool to the arsenal of Kiwi farmers. As well as their fearsome efficiency against pest plants, Mike has been thoroughly impressed by the long-term durability of the Vigolo mulcher, with its tough construction, high-horsepowerrated gearbox and double row of protective chains, all combining to ensure years of hassle-free service chopping troublesome greenery down to size. Things have changed A lot can happen in 120 days. Did you know Doubtless Bay Dental offers teeth straightening with braces? Not just any braces, Fastbraces! Things have changed in the last 20 years, so it makes sense that the way you straighten your teeth might have changed too. Old style, traditional braces are so expensive. They often involve teeth extractions and need to be kept on anywhere from 1½–3 years to be effective. Not to mention, once complete, you need to wear a retainer 24/7. Fastbraces are different! A university tested teeth straightening method, Fastbraces have been successfully used for more than 25 years, in 50 countries! Not only do they straighten your teeth in a much shorter timeframe (anywhere from just three months to one year), Fastbraces are less painful to wear, you don’t need to have teeth removed, and once straightening is complete you only need to wear a retainer for 30mins or less per day. Best of all — the cost is significantly lower than traditional braces, plus you

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. This is a critical part in our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. This can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation. Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme

needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately this enzyme (HMGCoA reductase) is also needed to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50%. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well researched and patented US product CoQsol®. FORESTRY

Back from the front lines

From the earliest days of logging and milling timber, those who work in the industry have acknowledged a simple adage. Felling the tree is only half of the battle. Getting it back to where it’s needed can sometimes represent the bigger challenge.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

When it comes to moving heavy loads, the name Caterpillar has a long history. Cat’s big yellow machines have been around since Benjamin Holt’s efforts in the days of steam. Their contribution to forestry is immeasurable, but in the field of moving logs out across rugged terrain, their range of forwarders truly stand out. The biggest and toughest of these is the heavy-duty 548 HD — guess what the HD stands for? It’s a 23,000-kilo, eight wheel drive monster which, despite its bulk and power, brings comfort and civilisation to the job of taming the timber. Cat’s big 548 HD is big on all kinds of figures, but consider for a second the equation at the heart of this impressive beast. With 204 kilowatts generated by the 7-litre Cat C7 ACERT diesel up front, the 548 is designed to travel at a mere 20km/h. That means massive torque, and even more importantly, massive

tractive ability — the measure of how a vehicle can overcome resistance. When you realise two things — first, that the big Cat is made to traverse some of the gnarliest mud and off-road hazards, and second, that tractive ability is usually associated with locomotives — then the figure of 234 kilonewtons begins to sound truly impressive.

For comparison, an F100 jet aircraft generates approximately 130kN. Aside from all that power, and the ability to haul huge loads of logs at a time, the other claim to fame of the 548 HD is operator comfort. The brute force of those eight massive wheels and the powerful hydraulic grapple arm which wrangles logs into place are nicely balanced by a cab which offers panoramic views for ease of operation, intuitive controls, and one of the most quiet and climate controlled spaces in the whole forest. While the engine up front keeps its cool with high technology, so too does the driver of Cat’s flagship forwarder!

PREPARE FOR WINTER Prepare a warm winter retreat by Andy Bryenton

With winter just around the corner, it’s time to take stock and make a checklist of all those necessary chores which ensure a warm and comfortable season. While it’s always good advice to plan early, this year it’s even more important, as an upsurge in home buying and renovations puts a waiting list on many of the big jobs popular before the rain and cold set in. For those looking to stop condensation and damp, now is the time to talk to ventilation system installers and insulation providers. Thermal drapes take time to sew, and even critical small items such as bathroom and kitchen extractor fans need the professional touch. Roof leaks uncovered by recent rains will also be high on the list, but it’s that country favourite combination of the roaring hot fireplace and stacks of dry, seasoned firewood, which is at the forefront of most minds. There are two important facets to getting ready for a season of indoor fires. Both accentuate safety, because as any firefighter will tell you, our greatest invention can also be a deadly enemy if not treated with respect. For this reason many insurance companies insist that fireplaces are inspected and chimneys swept yearly to prevent a buildup of combustible soot. Soot can also be kept down by ensuring that the wood

you burn is well dried and seasoned — stored up in a dry wood shed or well tarped down to keep out the rain. Key to this chore is another top tool — the chainsaw. Safety comes first here as well, and it’s a highly advisable idea to have your saw checked out pre-season by a small engine professional. A sharp chain and a full suite of safety wear — goggles, gloves, chaps, boots and ear protection — is what the forestry trade insist on, and it should be the rule at home as well. With an ample store of firewood and a well-installed, clean and functional fireplace, home heating will be a snap. For those without, modern heat pumps can slash energy bills this

winter. Team up reliable cost-effective heating with insulation to keep the warmth and ample air flow — through ventilation and extractors — to beat the damp. With all three in place you’ll be healthier and better able to fight colds and flu this winter.

As the housing market in Auckland continues to pick up, recent statistics show that more than 40 per cent of home buyers are now investors rather than intended occupiers. This trend has spread to the provinces and to our region, as those looking to grasp a hold on the property ladder choose to invest.

With new regulations for landlords, however, there is a little trepidation about what to expect — and what is required — for this coming winter. Guidelines for insulation, for example, have spurred a mini boom for this industry, but there’s still a bottleneck expected before the 2019 full-implementation date. The best advice for those looking to invest in rental property comes from within the real estate industry, and it’s simple — avoid the false economy of managing your own rental. Let a professional find your tenants and manage their residency, sorting out repairs before they become problems and isolating prior offenders before they are through the door. The vast majority of rental tenants are good and honest folks, but the other aspect here is picking the right property. A ‘fixer-upper’ may no longer be the single best choice as a rental investment — but once again, consulting with a professional who knows the rules and new obligations of landlords will help establish what work needs to be done to meet both current and future standards. Issues such as weathertightness,

heating, insulation and water and electrical infrastructure are more easily assessed by those who have done this many times before. Your local real estate professionals also keep a list of trusted tradies who can take care of necessary work. Once again, these will likely be tried and tested pros with a good track

record. There are still good investment property buys to be found, despite rising interest in our local market. To pick the best, and enjoy a hassle-free tenure as a landlord, it’s best to consult with the professionals from day one, establishing an easier way to recoup that valuable capital outlay.

Winter brings change by Andy Bryenton

Every season brings its own unique challenges and opportunities in the rural sector, but the calendar turning towards winter means there’s more to do than usual. Other than the particular chores related to the cycle of nature itself, preparing the homestead for the onslaught of cold and rain is a whole extra facet of the farming life. While those in town share certain aspects of prepping for winter with their rural neighbours, such as ensuring adequate heating, ventilation and insulation for the home, the reality for the average farmer is that winter can bring more than just discomfort. Storms and floods are not unknown in the midnorth, and preparing for these is a key part of owning a working farm or lifestyle block. It’s a good time to think about removing trees that could topple in strong winds this year, for example — they could be hewn up into handy extra firewood. Or perhaps it’s time to invest in that generator in case the power goes out? Handy lithium-ion power packs are also new to the market, ensuring not only a jump start for vehicles, but also a power source for laptops

and phones during a power cut. Speaking of vehicles, this time of year is the true test of a machine’s stamina. Mud, bad roads and rain all take their toll, so a check-up before winter strikes is a great idea. Things like tyres, wiper blades, batteries and window demisters seem minor, but if they fail when the going gets tough it could ruin more than your day. For the truly prepared, it’s a good idea to take stock of the tools in your shed and ensure that everything required for quick maintenance or repairs is on hand. That number ten socket could be the difference between a good day’s work and a frustrating drive into town in the rain. When the frosts, storms and torrents come, there’s no better feeling than having a warm, dry ‘castle’ of a homestead to come back to after a day on the land. Make a checklist now and sort out what you need for the coming season — including an approved civil defence kit just in case.

The weekly sale will run on Wednesdays at the Matakohe sale yards, starting at noon. It will include a mixture of prime cattle and boner cows. The sale, to which the public may consign livestock for sale by auction, is open to all farmers. The chance to cast an eye over livestock in real time, to meet with other farmers and to discuss the industry has definite appeal, and the chance to build a better herd is of course the intent. Regional manager Alan Swindlehurst is looking forward to providing more options to his clients. His 30 years of experience highlighted the need for a weekly sale like this — especially in a region where raising cattle has such a long and illustrious history. NZ Farmers Livestock expertise has continued to expand in Northland with a growing team establishing a NZ Farmers Livestock Northland base here. It’s a natural progression for the company, who have already built quite a reputation in the stock yards and paddocks of the rural Kiwi heartland.

Quality of animal feed production assured Auckland, April 5 2017: Feed manufactured to the highest standards is important for all farm animals and now consumers can be assured they’re buying the best manufactured feed available in New Zealand. Michael Brooks, New Zealand Feed Manufacturers Association (NZFMA) Executive Director said: “The message is quite simple, look for the FeedSafeNZ industry endorsement on the packaging and you will be purchasing the best manufactured feed on the market.” FeedSafeNZ is a new quality of production accreditation introduced by the NZFMA and is available to association members who pass independent audit standards as to the quality of feed production. The FeedSafeNZ accreditation has two main aims: to provide safe feed for animals and thereby to protect the safety of human food. “High quality feed is vital not only for the health and wellbeing of animals but also for humans, so it’s imperative that feed is manufactured to strict guidelines and is packed and stored correctly to ensure its quality is maintained,” Michael said. “New Zealand has an enviable reputation when it comes to locally manufactured feed, and with the FeedSafeNZ accreditation customers can be even more reassured that the feed

FeedSafeNZ audits are carried out annually by AsureQuality, a company that provides food safety and biosecurity services to the food and primary production sectors worldwide. Manufacturers undergo a stringent testing regime that involves a thorough on-site audit of their plant and storage facilities and operations. Only FeedSafeNZ-accredited sites are permitted to use the FeedSafeNZ logo on their packaging and other materials. “The NZFMA is constantly looking at how to improve feed manufacturing, and a recent review of the standards now includes new criteria around transport and grain storage,” Michael said. The NZFMA is encouraging its members to

achieve the FeedSafeNZ accreditation, which in time will become compulsory for all NZFMA members. Michael adds that many egg, poultry and pig farmers are moving to only sourcing their feeds from FeedSafeNZ accredited plants. “It’s heartening to see the number of farmers coming on board, which shows that they are striving to produce the

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

What science? There is a lot of talk about science, how we apply it on our farms and probably to the confusion of who it was supposed to help, the farmer, which science will best suit his or her needs. I have discussed in previous articles the findings that our team are discovering repeatedly when applying international science and principles to soil. This is proving a superior path ahead for farmers involved in all aspects of farming. We’ve travelled to Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States

to learn more, expand our thinking and advance our techniques to empower farmers to step into the light towards better ways of farming. Don’t be fooled into thinking that we are better than the rest of the world, that our cow dung is better or even different from what cows produce in Wales, England or the US. I

have even noticed that cows moo the same! It is also a misconception to think that soils are different in any other parts of the world. The differences we find in our own country’s soil from Cape Reinga through to Invercargill would come close to the variances across the world. The advanced courses we have attended have us working with international tutors teaching fertiliser recommendations on different soils from different countries and a diverse range of crops including avocados, grapes, oranges, walnuts, kiwifruit, trees and all aspects of livestock farmed soils. The principles to balance any soil by adding nutrients that are lacking is simply universal. Every soil which will grow anything efficiently demands the same approach to give the sufficient nutrients to do the job. During the last five years, many of our team have been to five to seven advanced scientific courses to learn these advanced international techniques which are helping our farmers in NZ become more in control of their destiny. The more science we apply to our clients’ farms, the more we understand how farmers, without realising, have built the two large competing co-operatives. They supply 90% of the fertiliser to NZ farmers. Ballance can trace its origins back to 1954, setting up bases in Southland and Bay of Plenty, whereas Christchurch-based Ravensdown

began later in 1978 to provide some healthy competition. These two giant fertiliser companies are now of similar size turning over approximately $1 billion annually. Both of these companies over time have adapted a set of policies or parameters, which have been accepted and followed by farmers, generally known as the NPK fertiliser approach, and it works! Our NZ farmers have grown all aspects of farming based on this approach throughout many years. However some of their policies, I believe, have been very cunningly set up to sell fertiliser rather than follow scientific principles. The main product produced by both companies is superphosphate, and there would be no surprise to find that this is sold wherever there is an opportunity, even if it isn’t needed. Phosphate is the least leachable nutrient in the soil provided it is not in excess to plant requirements. During these last few tough years, when we find phosphate is at good levels, then farmers are wasting their money applying more, when other nutrients are lacking. I have attached the nutrient availability chart, which is accepted science, showing the pH line that gives the best availability of nutrients to plant roots in the soil. Simply, if you move a vertical line from left to right, the availability of each element changes. Note how the availability of phosphate is twice as available at 6.4 compared to 5.9 pH. We are finding that lifting the pH in the soil will naturally increase the availability of phosphate without needing to apply more. We are also finding that in some instances, particularly when calcium or magnesium are low with a correspondingly low pH, the cost to balance your farm and increase grass growth can be less than what you would expect. Even nitrogen is more effective above 6 pH. I would encourage farmers, especially in these tough financial times, to apply some forward thinking principles. It starts with some independent international soil testing and will guide you into a more scientific, healthier and more productive future. ADVERTORIAL

UN experts denounce pesticides ‘myth’ A report from the human rights council warns of catastrophic consequences and blames manufacturers for ‘systematic denial of harms’ and ‘unethical marketing tactics’. Are pesticides truly necessary to feed the world? The global pesticides market is worth $50 billion and companies lobby heavily to resist reforms and regulations. But the idea that pesticides are essential to feed a fast-growing global population is a myth — according to UN food and pollution experts. A new report, presented to the UN human rights council, is severely critical of the global corporations that manufacture pesticides, accusing them of the ‘systematic denial of harms’, ‘aggressive, unethical marketing tactics’ and heavy lobbying of governments which has ‘obstructed reforms and paralysed global pesticide restrictions’. The report says pesticides have ‘catastrophic impacts on the environment, human health and society as a whole’, including an estimated 200,000 deaths a year from acute

poisoning. The world’s population is set to grow from 7 billion today to 9 billion in 2050. The pesticide industry argues that its products — a market worth about $50 billion a year and growing — are vital in protecting crops and ensuring sufficient food supplies. “It is a myth,” said Hilal Elver, the UN’s special rapporteur on the right to food. “Using more pesticides has nothing to do with getting rid of hunger. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), we are able to feed 9 billion people today. Production is definitely increasing, but the problem is poverty, inequality and distribution.” Elver said many of the pesticides are used on commodity crops, such as palm oil and soy, not the food needed by the world’s hungry people: “The corporations are not dealing with world

hunger, they are dealing with more agricultural activity on large scales.” She said some developed countries did have ‘very strong’ regulations for pesticides, such as the EU, which she said based their rules on the ‘precautionary principle’. The EU banned the use of neonicotinoid pesticides, which harm bees, on flowering crops in 2013, a move strongly opposed by the industry. But she noted that others, such as the US,

did not use the precautionary principle. The report recommends a move towards a global treaty to govern the use of pesticides and a move to sustainable practices including natural methods of suppressing pests and crop rotation, as well as incentivising organically produced food. Winning at awards The 2017 Northland Dairy Industry Awards Share Farmer of the Year winners, Niall and Delwyn McKenzie, are Kaiwaka locals and say they are fans of keeping it simple on the farm. The Dairy Manager of the Year is Greg Imeson, and the Dairy Trainee of the Year is Blake Anderson. The McKenzies say that after farming on large and smaller farms in Northland, Australia and the South Island, they love living in Northland, where people appreciate the ‘Keep It Simple Systems’ that they run. The McKenzies won the 2013 Northland Farm Manager of Year and received three merit awards that year also. They believe their strengths lie in

low-cost milk production with a focus on sustainability. “The awards have given us the information and skills to become better farmers,” said the couple. “We see ourselves as caretakers of the land. We are very lucky to be able to make the most of opportunities that are given to us by our awesome farm owners, who encourage us to strive for success and profitability.” They are 50 per cent sharemilkers for Rodger and Jan Comrie, on their 100ha farm, milking 230 cows. Both 38-yearold Niall and 36-year-old Delwyn have one paper left to complete a Diploma in Agribusiness. When not working on the farm, Delwyn is a relief primary school teacher. The couple would like to retain their current sharemilking position, purchasing the farm by June 2021. Greg Imeson is 34 years old and is married to Janelle, and they have two children aged three and two. “We have purchased a 200-cow farm in Poroti and take over June 1. Our goals are to successfully farm this and reduce our debt whilst spending quality time with family and friends,” said Greg. “I was a latecomer to the industry, however

Niall and Delwyn McKenzie, Greg Imeson, and Blake Anderson, the 2017 Northland Dairy Industry Awards winners

I always wanted to be a dairy farmer. Dad suggested I get a degree, travel the world, find a girl, and then if I still wanted to go farming, then I could. That was sound advice.” Greg believes the strengths of the business lie in it being a split-calving farm. “We do everything twice a year which accelerates learning — mating, calving, dry off, young stock rearing and so on. “The owner also gives me full control and the responsibility of decision-

making. He backs me 100 per cent which gives me the freedom to run the farm as I see fit. This has given me the confidence to progress further in the dairy industry and I hope to continue to be actively involved in the development of the industry.” Blake Anderson’s farming goals include managing his own dairy farm. The 19-year-old is farm assistant on Carlton Smyth’s 420-cow, 180ha property in Kaiwaka.

Life of the party by Andy Bryenton

The super-compact SUV is the latest metamorphosis of the breed — a combination of the supermini and the off-roader — which seems set to dominate the end of the market where hatchbacks once reigned supreme. Toyota may be a little late to the party, but their measured approach pays off with the arrival of the striking, urban-chic CH-R this autumn. Already making waves in Europe since its debut at the Geneva motor show, the CH-R seems, on paper, to have a hard road to dominance. Up against the incredibly popular Corolla in its size segment, this machine needed a clear point of difference to get hearts racing. Well, a single look at the bold, diamondinspired faceted cut of the CH-R’s exterior styling provides just that. This may not be a big, terrain-crushing 4x4 like the marque’s signature Land Cruiser, but it’s certainly no shrinking violet. The CH-R is really pitched against such small ‘crossovers’ as the Suzuki Ignis and the Mini Countryman — vehicles for whom style is part of their substance. The options list for Toyota’s new compact SUV includes customisable coloured panels, aggressive mag wheels and more, married up to head-turning design to make it a head turner. The interior is packed with smart gadgetry,

leather and clever storage spaces too. But of course the big question is whether this small sports utility has the true pedigree of other Toyotas such as the RAV4, which as you’ll recall, began its life as a small SUV in its own right. Perhaps they weren’t late to this party at all. The answer comes as another option, at least in Europe — the CH-R is indeed available with a frugal but peppy 1.2-litre turbocharged engine and fourwheel drive. A popular option, however, has to be the front wheel drive only hybrid drivetrain, which delivers 122 horsepower and big fuel savings. In British Pounds, both options cost the same. We’ve yet to see what happens here, as the petrol turbo debuts first. But you can bet that those who want the interior space and style of an SUV, without ever leaving the tarmac, will want

a look at that hybrid later on. A more visually appealing alternative to the ever-popular Prius? Or an eye-catching

alternative to other compact SUVs with legendary Toyota build quality? The CH-R asks ‘why not have it all’.

Winning formula under the hood by Andy Bryenton

While the overall vehicle of the year award is a coveted prize in the realm of automotive manufacturing, the engineers behind the scenes hold their breath for another yearly accolade — the prestigious Engine of the Year competition. Covering everything from fire-breathing V8s to frugal sub-1,000cc power plants, this is a closely contested fight between the big names in motoring. While 2016 was a big year for big power — with Ferrari’s 3.9-litre biturbo V8 taking overall top spot — it was a motor with a cross section smaller than a piece of A4 paper which racked up the most talked about accolade. Ford’s diminutive but powerful 998cc EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo took home its ninth award in the Engine of the Year competition, holding on to the top ranking in its category convincingly, despite a spirited challenge from Volkswagen and BMW. “Despite lots of competitors recently launching their own three-cylinder turbocharged designs, Ford’s wonderful 1.0 EcoBoost is still the number-one engine in its category class,” enthused La Repubblica’s Massimo Nascimbene, while L’Automobile Magazine’s Christophe Congrega marvelled at the tiny unit’s unparalleled capability: “With high torque at the very low end, this

high-tech three-cylinder turbo provides the driving performance of a small turbo diesel, but without any of the noise or vibration. It may be small, but the EcoBoost is one of the great engineering achievements of its time.” Smar t computer control, turbocharging and compression make all the difference in this category, and the EcoBoost engine has them all. It is now at the heart of no less than eight Ford vehicles worldwide, including a Kiwi favourite, the new Ford Fiesta. Needless to say, that tiny displacement means big gains in fuel economy, but the real surprise for those getting behind the wheel of an EcoBoost powered vehicle is the amount of ready power on tap. Combine this peppy response with Ford’s ability to construct a light yet rigid-framed chassis and body and 998cc suddenly feels just as willing as the ‘big’ two-litre mills of

Good things come in small packages — it’s a ninth consecutive win for Ford’s small 1.0 EcoBoost engine

yesteryear. Of course, the EcoBoost technology pioneered here in the award-winning sub-one-litre class is set to change things up in other areas of the Ford family as well. Another big surprise utilising the same

tech, has been the turbocharged four found in the new Mustang — an engine which goes toe to toe with the classic muscle car’s traditional V8 and has won acclaim of its own as a modern alternative.

Continental contender steps up by Andy Bryenton

Still sizzling hot from winning European Car of the Year 2017, the new Peugeot 3008 is a bold new direction from the French automaker. The sense of fun and edge-of-the-curve engineering which grabbed the world’s attention back in the days of the 205 is back, and it comes with — of all things — an electric scooter in the boot. Simon Rose, Divisional Manager of Peugeot New Zealand said: “The arrival of the New 3008 SUV is the first of multiple SUVs due to launch in 2017 and will mark a significant turning point for Peugeot in New Zealand, allowing us to actively compete in what is now the largest segment of the Kiwi market.” He goes on to say that “whilst the new 3008 SUV carries the same 3008 model name as its predecessor, it is an entirely different new vehicle from the ground up.” That’s somewhat of an understatement. Peugeot has indeed revitalised the 3008 badge and rebuilt its new car from the rubber to the roofline, nixing the controversial styling of earlier models in favour of some seriously sharp lines and a more aggressive, road-dominating look. Inside it’s all futuristic tech cleverly controlled, including a heads up display like that on a fighter jet — or a Chevrolet Corvette. That doesn’t mean that this is a flatout bruiser in a straight line — this

small crossover compact comes into a new but extremely popular section of the market with options for a variety of engines, but with intelligent, lowemission and low running cost diesel to the fore. Peugeot has always done diesel well, and this is no exception. But to win the big Euro award took more than this — and more than the cleverly deployed electric scooter which lurks in the boot to carve up the city commute. The real party piece of this French firecracker is its ability to offer the space and sense of safety which comes from a modern sports utility, alongside handling ripped direct from the good old Peugeot hot hatch playbook. Remember the 306 GTi 6, the 205 T16 and the more recent 208 GTi? How about a crossover with that spicy DNA in the mix? It was enough to wow
