Quad

Control the roll. Protect what matters most. Fairlie farmer Andrew Hurst purchased a crush protection device (CPD) for his quad bike more than a decade ago and it’s saved him twice from serious injury. Once with a bull that charged his bike whilst chasing his dog in a completely flat paddock, and again when he rolled it in a swamp. “It was like someone pushing firmly on my back with both hands, I look up and here’s the bike back on its wheels again.” CPDs were deemed a personal choice by Worksafe in 2014, but a thorough review of the research led them to take a firmer stance. Along with Safer Farms and ACC, they now “strongly recommend” the use of professionally designed and manufactured CPDs on the back of quad bikes. CPDs create a gap between the bike and the ground that could aid survival during a roll over. Safer Farms Chairperson Lindy Nelson highlights “if farmers find themselves in a situation they did not intend to be in, roll over protection could make all the difference.” “As a wife, I want to know my husband is going to come back safely. As an employer, I want to know we have done everything we can, practically, to look after the people on our farm.”

Two years on from the onset of the pandemic, we’re now one of the most highly vaccinated countries in the world with more than 95% of the eligible population. Despite the ongoing requirements for social distancing, mask-wearing and scanning in, the government’s $55 million public interest journalism fund has effectively increased the fear we feel. I’m not downplaying the potential effects of Covid-19 as an element of the health challenges we face. However, with all the safety measures we now have in place, including vaccination, masks and scanning, it’s time to move on from a place of fear and into a place

of hope. We’ve been told repeatedly by official sources that the hospital system is ready. The government has focussed on Covid-19 to exclude other key health priorities. Meanwhile, other pressing and critical issues that are unrelated to Covid-19, such as housing, infrastructure, cost of living, inflation and education, to name just a few, continue to worsen. In other words, we need to keep Covid-19 in perspective so that we don’t lose sight of the other challenges in front of us that remain in desperate need of action. Let’s hope that in the second half of 2022, our great little country can do that once more.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Keeping dreams alive

ApRIL 2022

Dairy farmers are keeping a dream alive for Karen Chapman, who grew up on a dairy farm and only ever wanted to milk cows. “Karen has been supported by a network of dairy farmers in and around Pukekohe. Many of them are participants in the IHC Calf & Rural Scheme fundraising scheme, raising animals and donating the proceeds to IHC,” says IHC National Fundraising manager Greg Millar. “This year, the IHC Calf & Rural Scheme marks its 40th anniversary by celebrating all the farmers who have made lives better for people with intellectual disabilities in their communities. Over those 40 years, the scheme has raised $40 million. “Karen’s dream looked pretty hopeless because her dad Noel Chapman, a sharemilker, died while she was still a teenager, and she and her mum Olive shifted into Pukekohe. “In a double tragedy, her mother died suddenly too, and Karen moved into IHC residential care. Once local farmers knew of her love of dairy farming, they welcomed Karen into their milking sheds.” Karen has milked all over the northern Waikato and South Auckland districts. A long-time family friend, Glen Lee, has driven her around the farms for as long as anyone can remember. “I used to help Dad milk around 100 Friesian-Jersey-cross cows after school,” says Karen. “Glen is a good friend to me — I have known her for a long, long time. Now I am milking cows on farms with bigger herds and more complex and automated rotary cow sheds. I have been doing it for a long time now.” Glen would call farmers to see if Karen could visit. “It seemed to work best with Syd and Jenny Goodwright,” she says.

“I used to help dad milk around 100 Friesian-Jerseycross cows after school.” “Karen used to milk for Syd and Jenny. These days their son Tom farms the home farm, and Karen milks for their daughter Becky Payne and her husband Mike on their farm not far away.” Syd and Jenny have been donating real and virtual calves for more than 30 years. For half of that time, Jenny has worked as a canvasser for the scheme, visiting around 50 local farmers each season to encourage them to pledge calves. “I am really lucky because I have got a lot of farmers in the district like me who want to keep supporting the calf scheme,” Jenny says. Mr Millar says the IHC Calf & Rural Scheme gives IHC an important connection to the rural sector. “Legendary All Black Sir Colin Meads, a Waikato beef farmer and staunch supporter of the calf scheme, encouraged beef and sheep farmers to get involved too. “He first threw his weight behind IHC when he stopped playing rugby, and we were privileged to have had the backing of the big man from 1974 for more than 40 years until his death in 2017. “More than 10,000 dairy farmers have supported their communities over many years through this unique fundraiser. Farmers can now donate virtual animals

WORKIN

FUTUR D R A W O E T G BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

The 2022 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards for Northland saw Te Hana’s Phillip Payton named Northland Dairy Manager of the Year.

“A

fter witnessing the joy my father’s farming contracting position brought him, dairy farming seemed like an inevitable career choice,” says Phillip. Phillip is the farm manager for Greg and Ingrid McCracken, milking 350 cows. “I grew up in Te Awamutu, and my dad was a relief milker for all the farmers in

the area, and I would help out from time to time on our farm. “I entered the dairy industry as a farm assistant in 2008, and can share the joy of farming with my family now. “My partner Leef and I are newbies to the Northland region, which has been challenging in both positive and negative ways. We made the recent move north to be nearer our families.

“She grew up in Kaikohe and would help her grandparents on their farm when she was young. We are quite private people and wanted to use the awards programme to network and build industry relationships in the area. “I planned out our progression pathway and have worked my way up to management. “We encountered many challenges these past few years, and some have altered our path. We have reassessed, overcome what was within our abilities, made peace with what wasn’t, and kept ticking off our goals. “The farm is a system two, feeding mostly grass and a small amount of silage in summer and in-shed feeding all year round. During the milking season they get Palm Kernel, soya bean meal and dried distiller grains. “The feeds are good fillers, have extra goodness in them, and the DDG is full of energy.

Te Hana’s Phillip Payton was named Northland Dairy Manager of the Year last week

“With milking you have to stay focussed, but you are there, in your own space, to get the job done. You also have key chores such as checking for mastitis and other issues in the cows.

“I have short-term farming goals of contract milking and a longer-term goal of incorporating teaching and education into the business. We have set goals toward farm ownership and operating a calf rearing business. “We also aim to have a viable contracting business that provides short-term relief staff capable of running the entire operation. The service will be specifically aimed to give owner-operators, contract milkers and sharemilkers time off-farm. “For an employer, best practice needs to extend to their workforce. So much of an employee’s livelihood is intertwined with the farm. “Worker-friendly rosters, training, pay rates and healthy housing are just the basics and should be seen as investments. “Employers and employees alike need to be honest with their intent and future goals.”

Phillip acknowledges the challenges of mental health support within the dairy industry. “Leef and I are homebodies and enjoy spending our free time visiting family. I also enjoy golf, fishing and camping, and we travel to Great Barrier Island as often as we can. “One of the most confronting truths is that for the majority of my farming career, the work/life balance just wasn’t there or wasn’t an option. “We had the ocean and a beautiful coastline one kilometre down the road, and I never managed to dip my toes in. Now we have a more balanced lifestyle since we started working for Greg, as the farm is set up well for that. “The great reputation of the business I work for is one of its strengths. It makes you feel proud to be a part of it.

“Education is not only encouraged, but employees are well-supported in their pursuits and progression. “It has been a welcome change to work for a business that is set up, not just for its own success but also yours. “I advocate for better rosters and milking schedules, which is why we implemented 10 in 7. That is 10 milkings in seven days instead of 14 milkings in seven days. “We milk twice a day Monday, Wednesday and Friday, once a day at 9am

Mrs Isey Cross was born Isabella Munn at her family homestead in Kāretu, Northland, on April 3 1919, and recently celebrated her 103rd birthday with friends and family.

he star of the James and Isey movie still lives with her son James at the farm she brought with her husband Charles in Kawakawa. Another son Gavin lives on the property, son Digger lives not far away at Te Haumi, and she often visits her daughter Lorraine at Mangawhai. “I enjoyed making the James and Isey movie celebrating my 100th birthday,” says Mrs Cross, fondly called Isey. “We had a lot of fun. Florian Habicht, the director of Kaikohe Demolition, made the film. He wanted to hug me when he met me, but I told him I don’t hug people I don’t know. When I got to know him, he got a hug. “People say my name wrong all the time. They say ‘Is Eee’, and I look at them and want to slap them because it is pronounced ‘Eye Zee’.

“My secret to a long life is, be happy — don’t worry, be happy. I used to say that to Florian when he was making the movie. “I was born up the road in Kāretu and spent most of my childhood there. Kāretu means sweet-smelling grass, and that is the name of the grass that grows there. “My grandmother was Hira Hemi Moewaka Kepa. Kepa is Māori for Kemp. She was the daughter of Captain Kemp, who came over on the sailing ships and lived in Kemp House at Kerikeri. “Hira Hemi went to Kāretu and fell in love with Hemi Johnson, married and had my mother, Ihapera. “Mum married American James Munn, known as Popeye, and I had 12 siblings, but our mother died quite young, and my older siblings brought up us younger ones.” b a r n s s h e d s g a r a g e s

Isabella Cross, fondly known as Isey, celebrated turning 103 years old on April 3 with her sons Gavin and James and her niece Wendy

Isey’s older sister Katie did all the cooking and ran the household until she moved to Auckland to become a nurse. “My other sister then cared for us. Apparently, I was grandma’s favourite, and she took me everywhere. We would go to Matauwhi Bay at Russell, and we would walk all the way to Long Beach.

“I was never allowed to sit on the grass — she always took a blanket for me to sit on. We would visit my aunties, and they all had immaculately clean dirt floors in their houses. “When I was a young teenager, I rode my horse seven miles from Kāretu to Kawakawa for my music lessons, and I would tie my horse up at the stables.

“When I was 18, I worked as a waitress at the Junction Hotel in Kawakawa. I had a white smock, and every time I passed the local boys, they would pull my apron belt and tease me. “My brother Len went to the second world war when the Japanese came to the Pacific. He wanted to help fight, so he told the army he was 18, not 16, but he didn’t stay long — he didn’t like it. “During the war, Len and I went to the Civic Theatre in Auckland because we wanted to see the stars and the lights. I was 20 then, and that is where we held

the James and Isey premier. It was nice to go back for something special. “I met my husband Charles on the dance floor up the road at Te Haumi Bay. He was a fisherman and had a flash American green car. We would catch herring, thread them on a string of flax and sell six for 2/6 pence to people from Te Haumi Bay to past Moerewa. “Every week, when the weather was good, people would wait on the side of the road with their frypans for their herring. His cousin Dolly Bray always brought and even paid — even though she was related.

“When we first married, we lived on Otiria Road in Moerewa, and then Charles won a house in a card game. We bought an empty section, number 37 SH1, along from Doctor Fenton’s surgery, and we moved the house there. “Around 60 years ago, we purchased this farm off the Rouse family from Hukerenui and haven’t moved. “We had five children — Lorraine, Charles, Larry, Gavin, and James. Unfortunately, ‘Charlie my son’ passed away from illness in 1980. “I saw many things change over time. I remember the telephone with the crank handle and party line, and our number was 67 or 76. “I think cellphones are very different. I knew things advanced in time, but I never thought the day would come that a phone would travel in your pocket.” Read part two of Mrs Cross’s story next month.

ALBERTLAND DESCENDANTS

RECORD 160 YEARS BY PAUL CAMPBELL

Before mankind came to these shores, we can but imagine how Northland was a land of mighty kauri trees, clear rivers, a vast forest visited by moa, myriad lesser birds and as near perhaps to paradise as ever there was. Photos: Albertland Museum

irst came the Māori, from out of the Pacific. Then, in the early 19th century, came the tall ships of European explorers, followed swiftly by seal hunters, whalers, traders and an assortment of adventurers. In the mid-1860s came a wave of settlement, people seeking freedom from Europe’s established social regimes known to history as The Albertlanders and this month marks 160 years of Kaipara settlement. Port Albert was planned to be a northern capital to rival Auckland. However, this failed in favour of Wellsford, where this month locals will remember the 160th anniversary of those early landings, but in a low key and muted form due to Covid cares. A visit to the Albertland Museum at Wellsford today vividly tells how the Auckland Provincial Government offered assisted passages to immigrants, and the

Early Northland roading was a task for hard labour

northern Kaipara Harbour was selected for settlement with a man offered 40 acres of land with a further 40 for his wife and 20 acres for each member of his family between the ages of 5 and 18.

In May 1862, the first party set sail from the East India Docks in London. After some 100 days at sea, the immigrants were sent off to their place of settlement in the Kaipara.

Gumdigging and sales put food on many Albertland tables

An early A&P show was a community highlight

Maps dished out in London showed wide roads from Auckland clearly marked but were, in fact, non-existent, and wagon wheels many immigrants had strapped to the ship rails were sold before they went by sea up the east coast to the then coastal hamlet of Mangawhai. From there, it was a slow and arduous journey over bush-covered land to Kaiwaka and on by tidal waterway to Port Albert, which was planned to be a northern capital to rival Auckland.

In the ensuing years, more migrants fanned out to claim land in and around the emerging settlements of Maungaturoto, Whakapirau, Pahi, Paparoa, Matakohe, and on to Ruawai and Dargaville. An area of 70,000 acres of land is today home to these towns, with many surrounding farms still in the hands of settler family descendants today. Port Albert, once seen as a provincial capital city to rival Auckland, still stands as a sleepy backwater off State Highway 16, with Wellsford long replacing it to

then grow exponentially with the advent of railway and arterial roads. The other main route to Kaipara was by way of the vast harbour via Helensville. It was the route taken by the Smith family, still resident in the Matakohe area today and with founding connections to the iconic Kauri Museum. As they moved on to their blocks, men supplemented their income by digging for kauri gum while the timber was harvested. Huge tranches of timber first served as masts and spars for sailing ships of many nations, and later buildings rose in Sydney Town and as far away as Los Angeles from pit sawn and milled beams, joists and weatherboards. Wise heads did not prevail until as late as 1970 when legislation halted the indiscriminate forest harvest, but by then, what covered a million hectares in the mid1800s had been reduced by 90 per cent.

Speed slowdown proposal — not an option

by Sir Lockwood Smith

The government will make Northland a third-world region — don’t let them do it. SH1 in Northland represents almost one-third of the entire length of our number one highway in the North Island. The government, via its transport agency, Waka Kotahi, intends to impose an 80km/h speed limit on that major arterial route, and every other highway in Northland, for that matter. Almost anywhere else, apart from towns, you’re allowed to drive at 100km/h or 110km/h on SH1. However, not us in Northland — we’ll be restricted to 80km/h. The result will be third-world status. It’s ridiculous. Moreover, because it will impose such a constraint on our ability to get around in a timely fashion, not to mention Northland’s future economic success, it’s, in fact, outrageous. Unless we fight it in a coordinated manner, this dictation constraining our lives will be imposed on us. For years, while a Northland MP, I fought to get the motorway extended north from Auckland. I finally managed to get included in the Roads of National Significance programme of the Key National government, a commitment for four lanes through to beyond Wellsford. Labour MPs were aware of this, and while I was Speaker, they used to tease me about it, calling it ‘the Holiday Highway’. I took it in good heart, never dreaming they would actually kill the project if they got elected into government. Although the vast majority of Labour MPs at the time were urban-based, I genuinely believed they cared about the

challenges facing Te Tai Tokerau. We have the lowest per capita income of any region. Our prominent iwi, Ngapuhi, has not yet been able to settle its historic Treaty claim, limiting much-needed resources for some of our people. Many have limited employment opportunities, low incomes and poor socio-economic outcomes. The recent Covid vaccine roll-out made this all so obvious. Even the meanest mind must see that Northland’s future depends on highway access, reliable highway access that can be traversed at first-world, not thirdworld speeds.

I recently wrote an open letter to the chair of Waka Kotahi, a person I respect, Sir Brian Roche. He courteously acknowledged my letter, but I’ve heard no more. I invited him up to our farm at Woodleigh, offering to take him on a short trip in my three-tonne truck. It’s not an old truck, yet SH1 is so bad that driving it on the highway physically hurts. SH1 is so rough, my wife recently blew a new front tyre, and my car had to get both front rims straightened before I could get a warrant. Instead of imposing a speed limit no one wants, the transport agency must invest in Northland’s highways to improve them from their current rough and potholed condition.

An 80km/h speed limit proposed for Northland by Waka Kotahi could significantly affect the region’s economy

In fairness to Sir Brian, the transport agency’s own analysis identifies the real costs of the inadequate corridor between Auckland and Whangārei. The business case they commissioned, called Connecting Northland, acknowledged that SH1 is currently an impediment to economic growth in Northland. It stated that unreliable and costly journeys between Northland and key markets reduce productivity and undermine investor confidence. The corridor, they said, is substandard for a national strategic route. Even without imposing a reduced speed limit, they acknowledged that longer journey times relative to other regions, high freight vehicle operating costs and poor road reliability all contribute to reducing productivity and undermining business investment in Northland.

If this Labour government cared one jot about Northland, Waka Kotahi’s analysis would convince them that serious highway investment is needed now. No — they don’t care. Northland enters their consciousness only once a year — Waitangi Day. They’ll consult on the speed limit reduction. As we saw with the Napier/ Taupō Highway, they’ll take no notice of us unless we fight. Their consultation is just a box ticking exercise. Northland local authority leaders have made clear they don’t want this constraint on our lives either. The Mayoral Forum, the Northland Chamber of Commerce and any other interested groupings must use this outrageous proposal as the trigger to fight to have Northland’s highways brought up to the same standards as the rest of New Zealand. It’s time to end the neglect of Northland. It’s time to fight for our region.

NORTHLAND EMERGENCY SERVICES TRUST

Feds back electricity safety campaign Federated Farmers Northland are backing calls from Northpower and Top Energy for farmers, rural contractors, horticulturalists and lifestylers to be much more cautious when working around electrical assets. President Colin Hannah believes there are far too many (unreported) near misses with electricity which could badly injure or kill rural landowners if they were to contact overhead powerlines or underground electricity cables. “Accidents can happen so quickly and easily due to a moment of inattention or the old ‘she’ll be right attitude’ so we are encourage Northlanders to do exactly what Northpower and Top Energy have been saying for years now – look, up, look down, look around and keep yourself and your mates safe,” says Mr Hannah. So many rural properties have electricity service lines (which are the responsibility of the landowner for upkeep), to power sheds and buildings, and water pumps so there can be a number of potential electrical dangers on a property.

Northpower, Top Energy and Federated Farmers Northland are teaming up with this monthly column to help keep rural Northlanders safe around electricity. As part of the Northland Rural Support Trust, Mr Hannah says he has additional drive to help with the wellbeing of rural Northlanders and he believes the Northpower/Top Energy ‘Just think – Does it look right?’ electricity safety campaign is timely. Northpower Customer Experience Manager Rachel Wansbone is pleased to be partnering with Federated Farmers and Top Energy on the campaign.

For example, if you are working around electricity, if you think something is too close it most likely is. Equally there is danger with underground cables, and too often people are hitting cables with machinery through inattention or poor planning. We want to lessen the risk of people being hurt or killed by electricity, and encourage people to keep an eye out for others too.”

The companies have guidance material on their websites about the legal requirements for working around electricity assets and encourage anyone with questions to contact them. For those wanting to excavate or dig, it is always recommended to get free copies of utility plans to make sure there are no underground services in the area.

“A large part of our electricity network in Kaipara and Whangarei is rural and it is important for us to be talking to people on the land about electrical safety. Our electrical safety campaign underway with local newspapers, radio stations and on social media aims to raise awareness of the dangers of working around electrical assets, with the ultimate aim of reducing accidents.” Top Energy Network Operations Manager Tony Smallman says “it is important for rural Northlanders to understand the right and wrong things to do around electricity and electricity assets.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

The Resilient Farmer

ApRIL 2022

13

by Colin Hannah - Federated Farmers Northland president

Just what does resilience really mean in rural New Zealand? I hear the word resilience bandied about a lot in conversations and it could easily be inferred that the modern-day farmer has become soft. To be a farmer, the person has to be resilient, and they are. Who else has to face the onslaught of what nature throws at them on an almost daily basis, in odd working hours of the day and night? In rain, hail or shine, they are tending their animals. They work through floods and droughts and all through the night to get their ground ready for the planting of crops, and months later, do it all again at harvesting time. They produce food that they are proud of for customers around the world — keeping the economy buoyant in times of adversity, such as Covid, when the rest of the country has shut down. They work hard doing what they do best — improving the environment along the way. Yet, they are branded as environmental terrorists by the very people they are trying to provide the best quality food for. The rules being increasingly imposed on farmers are by people who have only ever worn a red band to a fashion show or a party. They claim these rules are necessary because the market demands them or the environment is suffering through their uncaring attitudes.

Colin Hannah — Federated Farmers Northland president

Rules that are imposed by government and councils that are not complete or haven’t stood the cost-benefit analysis required before imposition. These people are shaking the resilience of farmers. I am a farmer. I am a reasonable person — I work hard, and I love what I do. I want to leave the farm in better condition than when I took over. Meantime, I produce the best food in the world, but

no one will listen to me, and it has shaken my confidence. It is the stress that I have no control over that is concerning me. I am also worried that the largest team of policy analysts outside of the government is not being listened to.

It is no wonder that the farmers are flocking to groups like Groundswell to boost their resilience as the authorities simply are not listening. Resilience and anxiety would improve if someone just took the time to listen to a common-sense perspective from farmers.

He believes it will be a game-changer for the potato industry to extend the knowledge gained through research, typically conducted by universities and research centres, to growers in the field. “The research will be focussed on working with potato growers to identify and understand the problems confronting them and to devise solutions to those problems. “The solutions will be developed through discovering new knowledge, as well as by using existing knowledge in new ways, and will be underpinned by strong local, national and international collaborations. “This cooperative, collaborative research approach will have immediate, significant and long-lasting benefits for NZ growers.” Prior to joining Lincoln University, Professor Kaiser was Interim Director of the Hermiston Agricultural and Research Extension Center, a world-renowned research centre for potatoes based at Oregon State University. He and PNZ share a vision to establish a similar grower-centric, extension-led research capability at Lincoln “At present, Hermiston is the go-to global hub where potato growers from

ADVERTORIAL ADVERTORIAL

The miracle of your immune system (Part one) by John Arts

There are two main parts to your immune system: the NonSpecific (Innate) and Specific (Adaptive) immune responses. Non-Specific Immunity These include barriers like your skin, sinuses and mucous membrane and cells (phagocytes) that literally ‘eat’ pathogens that come through the barriers. Natural Killer cells attack anything that is not genetically marked as self — you! With a viral attack like Covid-19, the Non-Specific system launches into full gear with inflammation, which starts to make life uncomfortable for the virus and, unfortunately, uncomfortable for the infected person. However, this is just a holding pattern till our Specific immune system kicks into gear and our B cells start making antibodies that our T cells can identify. Those that are immunised have the advantage of vaccine generated antibodies — more on this in the next edition. Nutrients have a significant impact on our initial immune responses to attack. Vitamin D benefits most immune cells and helps them to do their job protecting you from pathogens like viruses. Vitamin D also influences the effectiveness of virus-killing compounds. I generally recommend

1000–2000IU daily in summer and 2000–4000IU in winter. Our NonSpecific immunity is also affected by micronutrients including zinc, selenium, iron, copper, manganese that help make potent antioxidant enzymes to defend against viral attack. Polyphenol antioxidants such as OPC, curcumin and those in green tea, beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, and E and folic acid are also very important. They protect immune cells against infection so that they can do their job. Secondly, these stimulate our natural killer cells, the most potent aspect of our NonSpecific immunity. What does this mean? Those concerned about their immunity should supplement with vitamin D and a good multiformula with the trace minerals and antioxidants that help our immune system cope with infection. Zeafruit season review and preview

Glen Dunseath, CEO of Zeafruit, gives us some insight into the local market for avocados across both the current and upcoming seasons. With a couple of months to run in the current season, storms have impacted late supply, and product is tight for most marketers — yet despite that, values are not lifting. After an initial postChristmas lift, pricing has taken a hit due to export fruit not shipping and entering the local market instead. In some cases, pricing has dropped by 50%, which will take some time to right itself. It leaves us in a difficult position, as we have chosen to price our lines going forward at a level that is viable to harvest. Asking growers to pick for $3 to $6 a tray OGR for the late season market doesn’t win you a lot of friends. So we have set minimum payment values of $8 a tray OGR, which is our target for premium sizes. We believe we will overachieve on this as the export surplus will either run out or age out during the coming weeks. Looking to the new season ahead, the crossover challenge is a reality. Unless something significant changes, we will have a period where both old season and new season fruit is in the market.

The early market is still something of an unknown for several reasons: • After a tough export season, there is little discussion from exporters about prospects for the 2022/23 season • Growers have been impacted by limited returns, and in some cases, will not want to wait for extended pool payment timeframes • Tree health on orchards that have been pushed late will be impacted • How accurate the industry forecasting is and how exporters are changing (or not changing) strategies to deal with offshore customer changes and opportunities These may force growers to look at early market options should clearances allow. Personally, I foresee a significant volume of fruit available for the early market. Certainty of sale and return is a driver for many suppliers, and those growers who targeted the early market last year received better or equal returns than many exporters achieved in the longer window. Time will tell.

WHEN DO YOU WANT TO PICK? At Just Avocados, we are committed to providing a model that allows flexibility around harvest while maximising returns. Talk to us about how we can maximise your orchard’s potential.

Whangarei

SPOTLIGHT ON by Andy Bryenton

Whangārei growing strong

As Northport, situated at the mouth of the Whangārei Harbour, makes bold moves to expand its container terminal with 13 hectares more space, the city at the top of the harbour is also making big gains in commerce and industry. Whangārei is not just enjoying a real estate boom as people seek a sunnier lifestyle away from the Auckland metropolis. Buoyant figures show an increase in the past 12 months, with record median prices in January this year. The industries forming the core of Whangārei are also performing well as Covid restrictions recede. Whangārei has always been an important hub for rural support and machinery backup for agriculture and forestry. Vehicle sales are in high demand in the city, with waiting lists for popular models as international supply chain issues slow the manufacturing of our favourite utes and SUVs. The building and construction industries are also working hard, with more building consents approved in the past year than in the busiest previous year on record, 1974. Consents nationwide have surged by 25% in the last 12 months, with Northland following the upward trend. In 1974, the massive build-up of Auckland’s eastern and northern suburbs accounted

Whangārei is bursting with commercial potential, and statistics show that it’s a civic centre on the rise — recently, the maritime industry there refitted this top-end superyacht Senses

for many of the 40,000 homes consented. This time around, there’s much more building going on in the provinces. Whangārei’s marine industry is also a strong engine of growth, with vessels, small and large, rolling off the slipways after construction or repair. Paradoxically, Covid has seen a rise in boat sales, with the trend for the industry, the registration

of boat trailers, up eight per cent compared with 2020. Last year, the Whangārei marine industry scored a major coup with the restoration and refit of a $60 million superyacht formerly owned by Google co-founder Larry Page. Two hundred people worked on the project, which is only one of the major maritime endeavours undertaken in the area.

The end of the Covid era has also seen a revitalisation of the central shopping precinct of the city. A recent temporary plan to cut parking fees has proven what many have opined for years. Welcoming customers instead of fining them for coming to shop is the key to reopening the central business district for al fresco dining and casual shopping.

Town basin’s crowning glory

by Andy Bryenton

Art might not even be your passion, but if you appreciate the creative, quirky, interesting and new, then a visit to the Hundertwasser Art Centre and Wairau Māori Art Gallery in the Whangārei town basin is worth the trip. The distinctive building with its golden cupola dome makes for a great photo opportunity and vantage point to view the Hātea River and the town centre. More than this, it’s a three-dimensional map of the mind of a very interesting artistic pioneer, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. You might know him from his famous public toilets in Kawakawa — an offbeat tourist icon. “Paradises can only be made by the individual, with his own creativity, in harmony with the free creativity of nature,” Hundertwasser said in 1983. The culmination of the design and construction of the Hundertwasser Art Centre has proven that an individual’s vision can be shared and built on by those following in his footsteps. The unique building, following Hundertwasser’s philosophy of recycling, natural lines and organic forms, uses 40,000 recycled bricks, 1,600 cubic metres of recycled native timber, 5,000 recycled pavers and

3,000 square metres of locally crafted tiles. The timber used in its construction came from the building it replaced, which was carefully dismantled to keep materials fit for use. Friedensreich described the project long before it came to fruition. Still, the description will be familiar to anyone viewing the finished art centre today. “A journey into the land of creative architecture where there are window rights and tree tenants and uncontrolled irregularities,

uneven floors, woodlands on the roof, spontaneous vegetation and barriers of beauty,” said Hundertwasser. That’s exactly what German architect Heinz M Springmann and Grant Harris of HB Architecture in New Zealand crafted in homage to the artist’s wishes and his inimitable style. A browse through the twin galleries inside will reveal a world of creativity, but simply appreciating the building and the view from its incongruously grassy and golddomed roof is a small adventure.

Covid costs affect Annual Plan

by Paul Campbell

Increased cost, partly due to the Covid pandemic, are proposals the public is being asked to comment on via the Northland Regional Council’s 2022/23 Annual Plan with consultation open until Friday, April 29. While the council’s Long Term Plan (LTP) had signalled a 13.79% rate increase, the figure now proposed is a 13.89% overall increase for the entire region. “For Kaipara and Far North ratepayers, the 2022/23 annual average increase remains at $48 per rating unit,” says NRC chair Penny Smart. A new maritime vessel to replace the council’s almost 20-year-old vessel, the Waikare, was approved via the last LTP. However, design and build costs have more than doubled since then, increasing the budget by $1.7 million to $3.3 million. “This increase is largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its influence on costs and supply chains. and labour costs.” Under the Annual Plan, the council plans to borrow the

NRC chair Penny Smart

funds in 2022/23 and repay them over 15 years. “We’re planning to increase rates from the 2023/24 year to cover this repayment and cover depreciation on the new boat so we can pay for a new vessel when the time comes. While this won’t impact rates for this next annual plan, it will mean an increase of around $0.80c per rating unit starting in the 2023/24 year.”

Rescue helicopters thank community

The Northland community has again come up trumps by donating more than $360,000 to the Northland Rescue Helicopter 2021 annual fundraising appeal. The total is up from $334,000 in 2020 and $246,000 in 2019. Northland Emergency Services Trust chair Paul Ahlers says he is immensely grateful for the ongoing generosity of Northlanders and visitors to the region during the summer break. “We are always taken aback by the passion people have for the service, and that shows in the fact they donate substantial amounts year after year,” says Mr Ahlers. “We simply could not do what we do without this community support and the backing of our principal sponsors of 34 years — Top Energy and Northpower, Northland Regional Council and all of our other loyal sponsors. “Then there are all those individuals and community groups and organisations and clubs who fundraise on our behalf. all adds up, and that is vital for a charity like ours.” Northland Rescue Helicopter CEO Craig Gibbons says he is also thankful for the loyal support from the Northland community. “The support we receive from the community and sponsors seems to get stronger every year, and it is critical to have that backing because the demand for our rescue helicopters continues to increase as the Northland population grows. “In recent weeks, two significant donations were made to the service. The first from All in, All Out Trail Riders, which donated $5,150 after a trail ride fundraiser. “The group has regularly fundraised after one member, Hemi Murray, survived

a horrific head-on crash into a pine tree in July 2020. “He was not expected to survive and has since recovered remarkably well and become an avid supporter of the service. “The other donation in recent times came from Whangārei man Phil Schultz who organised a classic car convoy around Northland. “The efforts of Schultzie and his mates raised $4,418, adding to the thousands of dollars he has personally raised in recent years.” Top Energy and Northpower chief executives Russell Shaw and Andrew McLeod have also acknowledged the community support.

“We love the way the community comes together every year to support the annual fundraising appeal in so many ways — with donations and in-kind activity,” the pair say. “We are all part of the community, and every donation goes towards helping someone in their time of need, so it really is a case of paying it forward and caring for others.” 2021 was the busiest year on record for Northland’s Rescue Helicopters, with 1,289 mission call-outs in the calendar year to midnight December 31. That was up from 1,115 missions in 2020 and 951 missions in 2019. Since 1988, the service has completed well over 23,000 missions.

Athletes’ powerful finish by Ann van Engelen

Junior Athletics Whangārei celebrated its annual ribbon day where a number of spectacular season-best results were recorded as the athletics season came to a close. “Athletes from Wellsford to the Far North took part in multiple events with ribbons handed out to the winners,” says running coach Yvette Ferreira Botha. “More than 50 youngsters from throughout Northland took part. There were some impressive performances from all age groups — along with the Masters. “ We s aw many st andout performances. Among them was nineyear-old Blake Dickens, who threw the biggest discus of any age group on the day at 20.94m.

“Blake also excelled in other disciplines with first placings in 100m, 200m, shot put and a second in the high jump.” Leigha and Spencer Dinsdale from the Wellsford Athletics Club also put in a number of good performances. “Leigha finished with four second placings in shot put, discus, 800m and the mile. Spencer won the eight years’ long jump with a 3.1-metre leap, while also recording wins in shot put and high jump. “Te Konehu Puriri, age seven, showed plenty of promise with wins in shot put, discus, long jump, 60m, 100m and 200m sprints. “Leo Fenney, age 11, left it all on the track by recording the best long jump of any age group the day with 4.37m. Leo also accomplished the fastest 800m and

the Mile, along with placing first in 100m and 200m. “The rivalry between Mala SulvakoThomas, Addison Waihi and Grace Dumbleton on the track provided plenty of entertainment. “Grace took out the 100m and 200m with Mala second and Addison third. Grace also won the shot put, with Addison just behind and Mala in third place. Addison won the long jump, Georgia Pearks finished second, and Mala came third. “In contrast to our athletes of the future, the Masters were well involved with Colin MacLeod winning the mile in a time of 8.14 seconds, ahead of Rob Griffen coming in second, and Tony Langton third.” Sein vander Veeken placed fourth, with Liz Griffin in fifth place and Oringa

Barach rounding out the field with an impressive performance. “The efforts of all volunteers and coaches helped make the day a great success,” says parent volunteer Steve Macmillan. “We had a fantastic day with the athletes putting in a phenomenal amount of effort. “We are looking forward to working with the junior athletes next season and encourage children and their families who may be interested in athletics to come along and join us. “Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.” A full list of results and more action shots from the day can be seen on the Junior Athletics Whangārei Facebook page.

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES Investigating native honey Plant & Food Research will be leading a national team of researchers looking at native honey composition and the characteristics that appeal most to consumers. Thanks to new funding from the High-Value Nutrition National Science Challenge, the new two-year project focusses on prominent native monofloral, single flower nectar honey. Predominantly kānuka, rata, rewarewa and kamahi, produced by Te Pumautanga o Te Arawa beekeeping activities in Department of Conservation areas in the Rotorua region, will be used. The project will analyse examples of honeys from across the different geographical regions of the TPT rohe (territory/boundary) to search for specific chemical signatures and potential unique biomarkers. It will also determine the consistency and flavours of honey that consumers prefer, as well as consumer perceptions of Māori values and provenance. “Honey and honey-related products account for more than $400 million of New Zealand’s export earnings each year,” says project co-lead Aaron McCallion from Waka Digital. “Mānuka honey is the primary honey export, valued for its unique bioactive properties. We believe that other native species may also produce honey with

great taste and bioactives that will also appeal to consumers.” Dr John van Klink, project co-lead from Plant & Food Research says mānuka honey has scientifically-validated bioactive properties that consumers will pay a premium for. “In this project, we will analyse different monofloral honeys with the

aim of identifying scientifically-validated factors that will differentiate some of our other important, but lesser-known, native honeys.” Combined with advanced consumer insights, the new knowledge gleaned from the project will provide further awareness of the unique properties and consumer value of lesser-known honeys,

and support the development of new monofloral honeys. “This investment of more than $980,000 from the High-Value Nutrition National Science Challenge fits well with our objective of supporting industries with their growth aspirations through the application of science,” says Challenge director Joanne Todd. “The project brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts and scientists from Te Arawa and other iwi/ hāpu entities, Plant & Food Research, AgResearch, Massey University and Apiculture NZ to employ a collaborative bicultural approach. “The HVN Challenge is a mission-led programme of innovative research into the health attributes of New Zealandproduced foods for our major export markets. High-Value Nutrition Ko Ngā Kai Whai Painga is one of the eleven National Science Challenges. The challenge has $45 million of funding for 2019–2024. “The challenge has, through its contestable process, recently approved a large number of innovative projects that will be completed together with industry and business partners.”

Trees vital for land protection

ApRIL 2022

by Paul Campbell

Erosion control is becoming a vital farm component with increasing water damage and frequency and severity of flooding events across the country. The New Zealand Forest Service’s erosion control initiatives are hugely important in protecting productive land. “Loss through erosion has a significant impact on the environment, economy and local communities,” says grants and partnerships director at Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service Alex Wilson. “So, while we can’t prevent storms and floods happening, we can help mitigate against the impacts on people and livelihoods from slips and erosion, in particular by planting trees.” Erosion and its effects in hill country areas alone are estimated to cost New Zealand’s economy $250 million to $350 million a year. “Taking steps to reduce erosion in the upper areas of a catchment is much more cost-effective than putting in flood-control structures in the lower areas and cleaning up after a flood. “We protect farmland from storm damage by supporting farmers to plant trees to stabilise land, re-establish vegetation or retire their most vulnerable areas. “Not only does this work retain productive soils on farms; it also reduces sediment entering waterways and potential downstream damage. It is particularly important to build on-farm resilience now in the face of a changing climate,” Wilson says.

The Sustainable Land Management Hill Country Erosion Programme is the government’s primary means of reducing soil loss on private land through actively partnering with councils. “We encourage farmers to work with local councils through these voluntary programmes; plan how to best protect the vulnerable parts of your property and get support to take action.” Gisborne-Tairāwhiti is the latest region to suffer significant storm damage. Work continues to reduce the impacts of erosion on the district. Evidence of Hill Country Erosion Programme (HCEP)

initiatives leading to more sustainable land management can be found in a series of case studies around New Zealand, including in Hawke’s Bay, Manawatū-Whanganui, Nelson, Waikato and Greater Wellington. Alex Wilson says the case studies clearly demonstrate how HCEP is funding the right tree in the right place for erosion control, helping to prevent erosion in hilly country, which means less sedimentation flowing downstream, and better water quality for Kiwis to enjoy.

76%

of New Zealanders are concerned about “fake news” and its implications

However, even in New Zealand, where the climate is milder than in big solaradopting nations like Germany, people worry that their photovoltaic install or solar hot water heater will not perform when the clouds roll in, and temperatures drop. While it’s true that overcast conditions will cut the efficiency of solar panels, they won’t stop the flow of electricity or heat to water applications. Even in northern latitudes, where extensive long-term studies have been undertaken, a 12-panel solar set-up will provide enough electricity in a year to power a Tesla Model 3 for 28,000 kilometres of driving or run a dishwasher through more than 4,000 loads of dirty plates. These figures come from places like the United Kingdom and France, where it’s not unknown for snow to fall. Solar hot water heaters will still do an important job during winter. They can raise the level of the water in your pipes that crucial first few degrees before the element or gas burner picks up the slack. Just like getting a heavy truck moving, it’s the initial push that is heavy on energy expenditure. The sun will give this push for free, even on cloudy days.

Mangawhai Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps Northland Wide Installation, Maintenance & Repairs

While clear skies mean more power from solar units, it’s a fallacy to believe that overcast conditions will turn off the flow

For photovoltaic applications, the key to better effectiveness in the shorter, dimmer days of winter is a battery unit to level out the peaks and troughs of generation. Batteries are a sound idea any time of year, as peak power use usually coincides with the end of the day, when cooking, washing, gaming and media watching all combine to use more voltage. During the day when the sun is high, many people are away at work and the home ticks over on a minimum charge.

Another possibility to create resilience is to think about augmentation. A small windmill could pick up where the sun leaves off on truly inclement days, or a wetback stove could help generate hot water when a roaring fire has been lit for home heating. Here in New Zealand, we are all too aware sometimes that the sun’s rays can burn even through cloud cover. The inexhaustible nuclear furnace at the centre of our solar system has plenty of power to spare to make your electricity independent, even during winter.

WINTER FOCUS ADVERTORIAL

Power-free wastewater systems BIOROCK Sàrl Luxembourg has more than 30 years experience in the wastewater treatment business with 70,000-plus installations worldwide. Developing one of the first non-electric eco-friendly wastewater systems available on the world market, the company is a progressive one. It continues to invest in research and development of new technology to keep pace with changing environmental standards and the requirements of its customers. There’s a range of systems to meet most individual needs from 300 litres/day through to 13,500 litres/ day — these are available through BIOROCK NZ. The system is passive, combining primary (anaerobic) treatment with tertiar y (aerobic and filtration) treatment. Non-worm-based, these systems rely on natural aspiration to provide oxygen for naturallyoccurring bacteria. The systems converting raw wastewater into a clear, odourless liquid suitable for irrigation needs, are constructed from high-density polyethylene. The primary tanks (septic

tanks) are lightweight and easy to install in most locations — no matter how remote or difficult the site. Released this year and soon to be available in New Zealand is the BEASY-2000 all in one designed for wastewater fl ows of up to 300 litres/day. This system is ideal for tiny homes, orchards, workshops, etc. If a larger flow is required, the MONOBLOCK-3-1000 all in one is an ideal solution. BIOROCK NZ has a strong network of accredited installers across New Zealand who work closely with customers to implement a system with minimal impact on the environment. It has become a system of choice for many homeowners. It has no moving parts, is silent and odourless, with the added advantage of requiring minimal annual maintenance. The low cost of ownership and a long lifespan makes BIOROCK a longterm, sustainable economic investment.

Encouraging 4WD safety

Northlanders are encouraged to upskill their ability to drive safely off-road in the lead up to winter. “We are currently putting around 30 Northlanders through an advanced twoday four-wheel-drive course,” says Training 4 Safety managing director Mike Lindsay. “The safety training is designed to arm drivers with skills to competently operate utes off-road, and it will be one of numerous courses held in 2022. “It is really about people learning to make good decisions to keep themselves, their colleagues and vehicles safe from unnecessary harm by assessing potential dangers and challenges ahead of time. “It is always good seeing people step up their skill set whether it is their first time off-road or doing a refresher course. It gives us a chance to assess people’s ability and give feedback to them or their employers. “Regardless of how experienced people feel they are, it is often possible to learn more to give yourself the best chance possible to stay safe.” From a work perspective, anyone with the potential to go off-road should undertake some training at some point. “I consider a number of sectors in this, including forestry, civil construction, farming, general contractors, utilities, electricity lines companies, telco companies, agricultural sprayers, delivery drivers, mechanical services doing on-site repairs. “Even people going off-road in twowheel-drive utes can benefit from

Mike Lindsay encourages people to upskill for off-road driving

training as the skills we teach them are transferable. They develop awareness of vehicle limitations and challenges offroad, plus their own physical abilities. “We teach them about water crossings, towing, recovery, winching, pre-start safety checks on things like tyre tread, water, oil, vehicle servicing, battery checks and more.” “Some people don’t even know how to engage 4WD or if they have done it successfully. “Situational awareness is a big thing when you are off-road. Working out what are potential hazards and then making

good decisions if you come across a washout, for example. “You need to take the time to get out of the vehicle and walk around, assess the situation and make the right decision that won’t lead to getting stuck, stranded or damaging your vehicle. “We are not training people to be Barry Crump, but we are training them to be the best drivers they can be.” Safety training for LUV side-by-sides is also an option. “I believe this combined with 4WD training is really important for young

farmworkers, so they leave with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to operate machinery effectively and responsibly. “Courses can be one, two or three days, depending on the level of learning and skill development people are after. “Driving techniques that minimise negative impact upon the environment are also encouraged, with the course includes a combination of theory and practical sessions. People must provide their own vehicle.” For more information, go to the training4safety.co.nz website.

Warriors to workhorses

The years following the second world war were ones of profound change in rural New Zealand, as more land was broken in for the expansion of modern farming by the application of combustion power. Areas, where the horse and bullock had once reigned, were tamed by the power of trucks adapted for every possible purpose, modified by small engineering firms in the provinces and set to every task from hauling bales to drilling wells. At the forefront of this advance was a brand that had proven itself during the conflict of the 1940s; the Bedford. A division of General Motors via Vauxhall of England, Bedford’s predominant model M built on the reputation of the wartime QL model. It was nicknamed the ‘Queen Lizzie’ in an affectionate dig at the reigning monarch, who trained as an auto mechanic during hostilities. The big QL was not unknown here as a post-war import, with its four-wheel-drive system making it a favourite for early rural contractors and fledgling fertiliser companies. It was also pressed into service to carry cranes and drilling rigs for rural construction — with more than one model turned into a fire appliance. The more common M-series boasted a long nose and flat deck like the utes that were to come in later years. Under the hood lived the famous overhead-valve stovebolt six, a simple but relatively powerful Chevroletderived motor that would be a Bedford

Bedford’s versatile trucks were converted into everything from buses to mobile cinemas, as well as a host of farming applications

standard, through various upgrades, for many years. Rural dwellers of the 1950s and 1960s may recall M-series buses plying the roads between small towns. In 1960, the Bedford company launched the ‘truck that broke in New Zealand’, the legendary TK. It was destined to be in production until

1992 and adapted to almost every role imaginable, from military service to livestock transport, heavy haulage to construction. TK Bedfords helped build the motorways other trucks drive on today. Amazingly, there are still working examples out there being driven daily. Many companies got their start with a six-cylinder Bedford or one equipped

with a Perkins diesel. Rugged, reliable and (as drivers will remember) without any of the modern conveniences truck drivers enjoy today, the M and TK models, along with their heavier variants, were a driving force in building up provincial New Zealand and can still evoke fond memories to this day.

Drain the stress

by Amy Fifita

With winter weather on its way, autumn is the time to check the drainage around the home and farm and do some preventative maintenance. Time to get your socks out to wear with your jandals, but before the event of winter, it’s probably best to prepare for oncoming weather. There are some ideas that you can implement to avoid the discomfort of having your gardens and paddocks flooded. While you are doing your last minute jobs of ventilation, sealing, insulation and chimney cleaning, add drains to your list. Check for blockages or issues now before the drains have the chance to flood. Take the chance to prepare now. During autumn, your gutters have probably collected some leaves and with the winter weather on its way, clearing them would be beneficial. More rain comes through in winter — having a blocked gutter could damage your property. Drains redirect water to go elsewhere and not form a lake in the paddock for the cattle. Autumn is the time to think ahead to make it easier in winter.

With winter on its way, now is the time to prepare and think about what can be done to be drier next season

There are many drainage options available — it begins with a simple check. Do they need to be cleared? Have a look,

and then you’ll find out. It’s not too late to dig a ditch or look at what is affordable and effective on your land. Surface drains are a quick solution to unload excess water. It typically collects water from run-off and other areas and transfers the flow to appropriate places. These are good for areas with a large body of unwelcome water. Even reshaping your paddocks can affect how the water drains from them. Levelling out areas where water pools prevent excess water draining naturally or work better with the drainage system you already have in place. Subsurface drainage removes water from oversaturated soil, so the ground is not swampy. It is placed below the soil

and often involves pipes that catch water overflow and transfer it elsewhere. Having good drainage in place is beneficial for the crops or garden. Too much water could prevent the roots of your plant life from getting the oxygen it needs. Not having this in place could affect the growth of your plants. Ticking off the preparations for winter will help towards your comfort in the winter. Nobody wants the surprise or cost of a blocked gutter or flooding nonsense, so give it some thought and get started before it’s too late. Be sure to keep yourself and your family warm and dry so that the cooler and rainy months are stress-free and enjoyable. Be prepared and stay dry.

Levies decision deferred The National Animal Identification and Tracing scheme, NAIT Limited, closed consultation with farmers and collection agents on proposed increases to NAIT levies on February 25. Together with proposed increases in Crown and deer industry contributions, it is proposed that these levies will be used to continue the important work NAIT Limited has been doing since the M bovis outbreak in 2017. The work is to improve the traceability system so that it is easy for farmers to use and performs in the event of a disease outbreak. The consultation proposal was distributed to all registered persons in charge of NAIT animals, funders, and collection agents. The consultation proposal was also promoted extensively using rural media, radio and social media. Throughout the five-week consultation period, NAIT Ltd ran four public webinars and attended 19 committee meetings and primary sector events to discuss the proposal and allow stakeholders an opportunity to ask questions and have their say. A total of 147 submissions were made with a mix of submitters, including levy payers, primary sector groups and collection agents. While not everyone supported the proposed increase in levies, the overall sentiment from the submissions is a reluctant acceptance of the need to increase funding to improve the system

“Throughout the fiveweek consultation period, NAIT Ltd ran four public webinars and attended 19 committee meetings...” and that NAIT Ltd needs to deliver on their commitments to create a user-friendly and effective system. Based on the submissions received, the Board of NAIT Limited has decided to defer any decision on NAIT Levies to May 19 2022, to allow for a comprehensive review of feedback. “OSPRI is determined to get better at listening to the farmers and industries we service,” says NAIT Head of traceability Kevin Forward. “The purpose of this consultation was to hear and consider the feedback from levy payers before making any decisions. “Based on feedback, the NAIT Board has decided to defer the decision on increasing levies to further consider the submissions received. I believe this shows our commitment to genuinely engage with levy payers on the proposal.”

Extra support to help farmers and growers by Emily Henderson, MP for Whangārei

In January, I joined farmers at the Surfing for Farmers initiative. Surfing the waves isn’t a bad analogy for farming, and the night’s results were proof of the sector’s skills, with almost everyone upright on the boards (except, natch, the local MP). Thanks to the hard work of rural New Zealanders, the primary sector’s outlook is bright. A record $50.8 billion export revenue is predicted in 2021–22, an annual increase of six per cent, a result to be proud of, especially during Covid. There are still plenty of challenges, but the government is working hard to help farmers and growers meet them. The historic UK free trade agreement signed this month significantly reduces export costs for the primary sector. Our dairy and red meat sectors will, for the first time since the 1970s, have tariff-

free access that grows through significant quotas until fully liberalised, while tariffs come off immediately for kiwifruit. New Zealand’s honey exporters no longer face a $16 duty for every $100 worth of honey. Our exports to the UK should increase by more than 50 per cent, saving about $37 million a year from day one. The FTA includes climate change provisions, echoing our primary sector partnership to tackle climate change and reduce emissions. It is difficult work but partnership delivers results. We are well on track to achieve a world-first eradication

of Mycoplasma bovis thanks to a strong government/industry partnership. We are tackling workforce issues, with nearly 10,000 more locals into primary sector jobs and meeting seasonal demand with 16,000 more RSE workers and reopening the Working Holiday scheme. There’s no disguising the fact that farming, let alone in a pandemic, creates huge stress. That’s why we’ve put $400,000 extra in to bolster the Rural Support Trusts and like organisations to help ensure there’s someone to speak

to and provide guidance should you be dealing with Omicron. Wage support is also available through the Leave Support Scheme. To help pay self-isolating employees, the scheme also includes self-employed workers, and the solo worker exemptions assist farmers while positive but asymptomatic. This world-leading FTA will serve our region well. Meanwhile, the hard work of rural Northlanders is helping keep exports flowing and leading Northland’s trade-led Covid recovery.
