Kaitaia-based Tai Tokerau Honey was named the overall winner, as well as securing the Northland Regional Council’s Excellence in Environmental Awareness and Management category when the business awards were held in Whangarei recently. The two awards have delighted the owners of the nine-year-old company, Lonnie and Rob Murray, who have a strong whanau and sustainability focus and aim to grow the business alongside hapu, whanau and wider community for mutual benefit. “We strongly believe that we’re kaitiaki of the land and promote sustainability,” Lonnie Murray says. “Honey is a gift and a blessing, and we treat the bees — and

the land — with the respect they both deserve.” Husband, Rob Murray, says the couple view the award as belonging to all the company’s dozen-plus employees, many of whom are family. He says the company strives to provide young locals with employment and work experience and whenever possible, also tries to use local services and resources to keep returns in their rohe. The couple’s success has also earned congratulations from the regional council’s local Te Hiku constituency representative, Mike Finlayson, who says the company — which runs roughly 5,000 hives — is a great example of how a business can add value to its local community.

Fighting wild ginger

Oi!

A government grant will allow for a potentially world-first attempt to use insects to tackle wild ginger infestations choking Northland bush and forest. The Northland Regional Council applied to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Farming Fund for $464,470 to research wild ginger biocontrol agents in the Sikkim region of northern India until mid-2021. The application was successful, and almost $900,000 project officially kicks off this month. Co-funding from the regional council and partner organisations including Hancock Forest Managers, Summit Forests, the Department of Conservation, Northland’s three district councils, Auckland Council, Landcare Research and the National Biocontrol Collective takes the total funding amount to $897,130. The group and international collaborators will research the viability of several potential biocontrol agents identified in India — including a large weevil, a fly and a beetle. “Wild ginger has reached plague proportions in Northland, and despite the best efforts of many people over a number of years, the pest plant now occupies more than 5,000 hectares beneath state and privately-owned forests around the region,” says NRC’s Te Hiku constituency representative, Mike Finlayson. “It is now costing the regional economy an estimated $3 million to $5 million annually due to the loss of productive land alone. Ginger is an

issue because it forms dense stands, which then exclude native/desirable other species. “While biocontrol programmes have existed in New Zealand for around 90 years, wild ginger is a novel target for biocontrol internationally. This project will develop never before used or studied insects as biocontrol agents for wild ginger.” Council Biosecurity manager, Don McKenzie, says the best-studied prospective biocontrol agents so far are a shoot-mining fly (Merochlorops cf dimorphus), whose larvae mine wild ginger stems, and a large weevil (Metaprodioctes cf trilineatus) that feeds on all parts of the plant, including the rhizomes. “The fly and weevil look highly promising and are likely to be sufficiently host-specific for release in New Zealand, but further testing needs to be undertaken to confirm this, and to develop mass-rearing and release techniques for them.” Northland is already home to a number of biocontrol agents including beetles, which feed on wandering Jew — as well as fungi and rusts, which collectively attack a variety of pest plants and insects including tropical grass webworm, mistflower, gorse, ragwort and woolly nightshade. “Before any biocontrol can be released in New Zealand, it is subjected

to extensive and lengthy research to make sure it is host-specific and won’t target other species and any proposed biocontrol for wild ginger will be very well-researched.” To learn more visit nrc.govt.nz/ nasties.

Winsam Farm in Kerikeri is the home of Cathy Oakley and Rod Clarke’s flock of East Friesian sheep that provide milk to make their award-winning cheese.

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

“W

e milk a maximum of 150 ewes between September to March and concentrate on hard cheeses such as the farmhouse cheddar, and we also make feta and halloumi,” says Cathy. Cathy was persuaded to enter NZ Champions of Cheese Awards last year and was named Cheesemaker Of The Year, scoring a perfect 100 for the farmhouse sheep cheese she makes with Rod’s help. Their ‘Just Ewe’ Winsam Farmhouse cheese also won the NZ Chefs Association Champion Sheep Cheese award.

“We originally had a few goats, and I made cheese for home from the milk and then we brought five East Friesian sheep to see what they were like. Rod decided it would be economical milk sheep rather than goats and we bred from them. “Friesian sheep can have a few feet issues — they are not as hardy as Suffolk and standard meat breeds, but they are generally good animals.” Winsam Farm is a registered stud, and the property consists of 65 acres plus a lease block. “We both milk and Rod does most of the pasteurising leaving me to

concentrate on the cheeses, and we sell a lot of the milk. It is better for people that are lactose intolerant or have sensitive tummies. The fat molecules are smaller and more digestible — it is creamy, makes great coffee and freezes well.” The couple milk the flock with a stateof-the-art quick exit platform. Rod is the importer and distributor of Milkplan Farming Technologies made in Greece providing tanks, pasteurisers and all milking equipment. “East Friesian sheep originally come from Friesland, the same place as the Friesian cow in Europe and are specifically for milking. When we first started, there weren’t many here, but the numbers have increased. Other people have bigger sheep milking setups with crossbred, which is working well, but we stuck with the Friesians because of their handling ease and our boutique size. “Being a milking breed they take longer to get a good meat carcase weight but don’t have as much fat as the standard breed so are becoming more popular. “We milk once a day, but bigger farms would milk twice a day for quantity. We pasteurise and bottle on-site and sell on-farm. “The Friesian have good udders, are good birthers producing twins or triplets and are very maternal. We leave the lambs on the mum for eight weeks to get stronger robust lambs, but you have to stay observant as the udders can get a damaged from feeding. “Sheep have a shorter milking season,

5

The Friesian sheep are easy to handle and are good mothers, often producing twins and triplets

and ours are mainly pasture fed and given grain in the shed more as a treat. We adjust the season and dry off early if there is a drought.” Cathy says the breed produces lovely fine wool and they shear twice a year. “We shear before lambing, so they are clean for milking, but they have clean udders anyway and don’t have woolly tails. It is done again around December. “We enjoy the animals — they are lovely to deal with and making cheese is enjoyable. They are like pets — there is always one or two in the shed first and one that is last. Anything that is hand-raised will always wait around for you, and some are more intelligent than people would like to believe. “The milking sheep are calm and easy to handle and are great for lifestyle blocks. People buy them to make their

own cheese or to have milk. They get a little portable milker or milk by hand,” says Cathy. Sheep have double the milk solids of cows and goats — so for every 10 litres of milk, we can get two kilos of cheese whereas cows and goats get one. Cheesemaking is an art that Rod and I share together. He is a typical kiwi bloke who can fix anything with a good attitude, and we are a team and work well together. Having quality products is

important and winning the cheese award was overwhelming because I entered for feedback on our product and wasn’t expecting to win. Winning was mindblowing and boosted my confidence — because there are so many good cheeses out there. “We don’t want to grow our business any bigger than we are because we can manage everything now and are enjoying keeping it nice and simple.”

Silver Fern Farms is celebrating 25 years in Dargaville and now employs 300 locals — up from 65 when it first opened.

T

he plant took 12 weeks to build with some 400 piles used for stability of the foundations to allow for the high water table in the area. The first animal was processed on June 28, 1993. Ash McKay relocated from Hawera to commission and manage the Lowe Walker operation for Graham Lowe and is now a regional operations manager with the company, which passed to Richmond and then PPCS, before rebranding as Silver Fern Farms. “I was privileged to be involved in the development of the processing plant and was impressed with staff enthusiasm from day one,” says Ash. “There have been many changes over the years keeping up with technology,

efficiencies and industry, which ensured our ongoing success. Leadership is an important part of a successful team, but it is the ‘people’ within the team that get the results, which we see year after year with commitment, trust and working together. “The staff size doubled with a second shift bringing more than $325 million into the local economy in wages since then. That is $13–15 million a year, and to support the local economy we purchase as much locally as possible.” The factory process approximately 432 prime equivalents a day or more and there are four long-standing employees from the original team — Narina Larsen now the purchasing coordinator, David (Pop) Hutchinson the night shift plant

supervisor, Brian Boydt and Warren (Paua) Clarke. Paua relocated from Whangarei as an opportunity to create a better lifestyle for his family. “We are referred to as a ‘whanau plant’ because we encourage people to get ahead in life and have a lot of fun. I am also the on-site union official, knife trainer and a leader for our Akoranga Mauri Ora mentoring programme,” says Paua. The programme is a numeracy and literacy programme designed around learning and life. Staff can get NCEA levels, budgeting advice, driving licence training and help with other life skills. “The job generally attracts people that haven’t fit into the school system, and they are an important part of the business. They are hard workers, and other people couldn’t achieve the job our team does. “Back then, ‘Pop’ Hutchinson changed career, moving from the Carter Holt sawmill in Dargaville and has moved up to managing 130 staff and is great at motivating the team. We have strict animal welfare regulations and veterinarians oversee our processes. Animals are respected from farm collection to the time they are in a box. “We have a great mix of men and women working here. This job gives us financial options and many people start with a rickety old vehicle and within six months have a nice vehicle. Over the years the company has implemented positive changes including a recycling programme that has seen massive reductions in general waste going to landfill and we purchase wood pellets from a company in Waipapa for the burners instead of coal to cut emissions, keeping money locally Northland and people employed.” Plant manager, Lance Warmington, was born and bred in Dargaville and started at the plant as a meat inspector and progressed to a supervisor, then managed a number of New Zealand sites and spent time as a general manager for a meat company in Canada. “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our loyal, valued supporters and suppliers. “In the beginning, Mayor Brown fought to get the facility built here. location option was the old money factory in Whangarei,” says Lance. “We are a small plant designed for high productivity and develop our management team with staff from the floor. We have people from many cultures here with national and international visitors constantly commenting on the friendliness at our plant. “Internationally people are in awe of the New Zealand meat industry and our innovation. I believe having Shanghai Maling invest from China was a very wise move as that has put us in a strong financial position. We have seen some tough times, and I am proud to

celebrate this milestone with a great team — bricks and mortar make a plant, but it is the people that are the heart of these plants that make it a good place to come to every day.” Silver Fern Farms chief executive, Simon Limmer, says the company is delighted to celebrate Silver Fern Farms Dargaville reaching the significant milestone of 25 years of production. “We are proud to be part of the Dargaville community. “Our passionate food people have helped to grow the plant into what it is today. Congratulations and many thanks to our passionate team and supporters.”

WEAVING THE

BY JILL DICKIE

8

When Jenni Shah returned to New Zealand with her husband and children after two years living in the Cook Islands, she wanted to continue her new-found love of weaving.

A

s a child, she saw Pacific Island weaving while living in Fiji and Papua New Guinea, and was again inspired by the craft in Aitutaki, while husband Michael managed a holiday resort there. They embraced the island life and culture, immersing themselves in the language, music and dance, and Jenni homeschooled their three young children. She volunteered in the local library and enjoyed being part of an outrigger canoeing team. She had hoped to purchase a floor mat as a souvenir from the tropical paradise but finding none available, asked the local women’s craft group for assistance. They started her off,

and with help from an online book, she was on her way to what has developed into a successful designing and weaving business. Jenni needed to find substitutes for the pandanus and coconut she was weaving with in Aitutaki, and while researching alternate weaving materials, she discovered loom weaving, which would make the process quicker and easier. She built her own looms in the beginning, each getting more complex, before deciding to purchase an Ashford rigid heddle loom. With progression and innovation to her designs, she now has two of them, plus a large, more complex floor loom — a four shaft jack loom.

Jenni with her first floor mat she handwove while at Aitutaki

Using imported cotton for the warp, and New Zealand fibres for weaving, Jenni produces a range of scarves and wraps in a range of colours and textures. The use of merino, Corriedale and rare breed wools is incorporated with mohair, possum and alpaca to create a soft and luxurious feel, and she loves to tell customers she has personally met some of the alpacas that have supplied her with yarn. Kaipara Pines Alpacas and Cuesta Alpacas are particular favourites. Imported yarns are also purchased for weaving specific items, and pricing of the end product reflects the difference between this and New Zealand luxury fibres, in creating the one-of-a-kind handwoven pieces. Being environmentally aware, Jenni has

recently designed a colourful tote bag woven from recycled shopping bags. For each, 20 plastic bags are cut into strips and handwoven on a loom, creating a strong and durable fabric ready to be sewn into her colourful bags. She offers a beautiful range of scarves from a soft and luxurious alpaca in pastel shades, to elegant diamond twill designs and chunkier tweeds full of texture. Her merino-based shawls and wraps are in a range of colours reflecting the tones of New Zealand native birds. Jenni sells her scarves and wraps through her website wraptweaving. com, as well as through two local retail outlets and directly to conference organisers who love the range as corporate gifts.

“Choosing gifts for special visitors is challenging — you want something authentic, meaningful, simple to transport, that speaks of New Zealand’s unique place in the world,” says designer and weaver, Jenni. Before living in the Cook Islands, the family lived on their lifestyle block near Warkworth, and while they currently live on the North Shore, their retirement plan is to return to the land. “I can visualise my weaving studio and my alpacas now! The link to the land is the essence of what I create.”

Rescuing your electric fence GreenRiggers electric fence outriggers were designed by Blair Howard as a solution to lost energy and efficiency of electric fences on the family farm. Blair grew up on a steep, rugged hill country property and spent as much time as he could working with his dad. “The farm was 1,050 acres running sheep and cattle with only 50 acres of flats — the rest was horseback country. I used to think it was funny walking along fence lines and hearing that loud constant ‘crack’ the fence used to make,” says Blair. Later in life, he discovered that ‘the crack’ was the fence shorting out, and was the nemesis for every farmer. “It was ‘the enemy’ because valuable energy was escaping and our electric fence was weakened, losing its ‘oomph’ before reaching the back of the farm. I decided to develop something ultrastrong, safe and UV protected to save us money and energy whilst delivering more grunt to the back of the farm. The GreenRigger electric fence outrigger was the result along with the catchphrase ‘Go Green, lose ya shorts’ — a new concept widely accepted by farmers. “Proudly made in New Zealand we maintain the highest quality standards. The design is made up of tough poly plastics formed in triangle shapes, and within those triangles you will find right angles, making the product as strong as you can get in its form. The units are non-conducting, strong, semi-flexible and non-corroding with no sharp points to catch or injure animals,

and you don’t need any tools to fit it — so no more losing hammers and pliers in the long grass.” GreenRiggers are a safe, cost-effective solution to protect your conventional fence daily and maintains excellent grip with no movement. They are easily relocatable and suitable for most animals including cows, sheep, horses, pigs and goats. “Tested down to -19C they are fast and simple to fit and are perfect for inland and coastal situations.” Available in black or green, GreenRiggers hold hot wire up to 250mm off the fence clearing posts. Helping sore joints

by John Arts

At any given time I am helping hundreds of people improve their joint health. My goal is to help prevent further cartilage loss, reduce inflammation and improve the function of the joint. In most cases, we can get significant improvements in joint comfort and mobility. I have one client who was referred to an orthopaedic specialist with suspected OA in his left knee. It was sore, stiff and swollen. He had X-rays, which confirmed that there was significant cartilage loss and changes to the bones of the joint. His right knee caused him no problems, but the specialist decided to X-ray that one as well. What he found was that arthritis in his ‘good’ right knee had more cartilage loss than the sore one. You would wonder how that could be. How can moderate arthritis cause significant pain while the worst knee did not? The answer is probably inflammation. The sore knee was obviously inflamed. It was swollen (puffy), stiff and very sore. The more degenerated right knee had no swelling and no pain. After a few months, his sore knee is much improved. The body can be quite cynical at times. The normal way damaged tissue is healed is through initiating the process of inflammation. In simple

terms, blood vessels allow more fluid into the damaged area — it causes swelling and pain. I have found that OA symptoms are caused as much by inflammation than actual cartilage loss. The first step is to reduce inflammation. We do this by adding omega-3 from oily fish and antiinflammatory antioxidants especially curcumin from turmeric. The second thing is to add therapeutic amounts of chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine sulphate to stabilise cartilage. Chondroitin is most important as it is an actual constituent of cartilage but only at levels of 800mg plus daily. Initially, I like to target 1,500mg to help get faster results. Key science experts and thought leaders from science organisations, iwi, government agencies, educational organisations and Australia spent two days building on their current collective knowledge of kauri dieback, with the aim of generating a more integrated and enduring science plan. The critical science priorities identified will form the basis of an integrated and enduring science plan being developed through the Kauri Dieback Strategic Science Advisory Group, formed earlier this year as part of the wider Kauri Dieback Programme. Scientists, conservationists, and agencies around the world are grappling to find a solution to Phytophthora pathogens that cause kauri dieback and other fatal tree diseases. Those gathered at the recent workshop are united in their commitment to fight the disease. “Stepping up the science in a multiorganisational, aligned approach to save our kauri is a critical part of the solution,” says Dr Ian Ferguson, advisory group chair.

“This means drawing from a range of disciplines, including biology, technology and social science with Matauranga Maori at its core. This provides an important opportunity to identify critical priorities, ensure we aren‘t missing any ideas or innovations and to help make sure that we tackle any gaps in our knowledge. “It is important to remember though that the ideas generated are just a start, with more work to be done

on the detail and further opportunity for wider input before we finalise the science plan.” Dr Ferguson says the work will complement and expand the focus the programme has had to date on developing operational tools to understand, detect and manage the disease to save kauri. The draft plan providing clear signals on science priorities will go to the government by mid-September.

Forestry has come out of the shadows into the spotlight. Our industry is undoubtedly New Zealand’s main weapon against climate change by locking up vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. We export more than $6 billion worth of forest products a year. And we need to get better at preventing debris going down rivers in floods. Telling our story on television is overdue. So, broadcaster Don Carson is about to take us through what forestry is all about.

The NZ Institute of Forestry has recognised the contribution of two of its outstanding leaders, Peter Clark and Russell Dale. Peter hails from Rotorua and received the NZIF Forester of the Year award. The award is one of the highest accolades the Institute can bestow and recognises an Institute member who has made an outstanding contribution to either the forestry profession or the forestry sector over the last 12 months. It recognises leadership, excellence and personal integrity, particularly where this demonstrates the character and strength of the forestry profession. “The Forester of the Year award is a fitting recognition of the contribution that Peter has made to the sector over a large number of years,” said president, David Evison. Russell Dale was awarded the Kirk Horn and medal. The Kirk Horn Flask is the most historically-valuable award in all New Zealand science, and the NZIF awards the Kirk Horn every second year, to recognise outstanding contributions in the field of forestry in New Zealand. “Russell has proved himself to be

an outstanding leader in forest management and in the management of major industry-funded forestry research programmes, over a long and distinguished career,” said Dr Evison. “The NZIF is delighted to celebrate the achievements and contributions to New Zealand forestry of Peter Clark and Russell Dale.” The election of Steve Wilton of Masterton as a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Forestry was also recorded. The election to this special membership status is granted by a vote of members and recognises the eminence of Steve in the profession of forestry. The contribution of Trish Fordyce of Auckland to the New Zealand forestry sector and her long service to the sector in the areas of environmental and land use regulation, and the application of the Resource Management Act to forestry and wood processing was also recognised, by her election as an Honorary Member of the NZ Institute of Forestry.

When we hear the word ‘manuka’ we automatically think of honey and the successful market there is for it, but there is another use for our hardy native bush plant in the extraction of oil. Nursery growers have developed high grade manuka seed to allow strong yielding plants, which produce plenty of flowers with excellent quality nectar, therefore the highest possible revenue from manuka honey. In turn, the bees help pollinate the trees, helping them to reproduce their flowers for the next season. The way manuka plantations are managed and harvested forms a basis for mutual benefit between the bees and trees — working together to survive and thrive. When harvesting the brush for oil extraction, only the top part of the tree is trimmed. The leaves, flowers and branches are all used without any destruction to the mother plant, therefore harvesting the part of the tree with the highest medicinal benefits, allowing it to continue to strengthen and flourish over its 20 to 30-year lifetime. The residual mulch from the oil extraction process can be returned to the plantation and used around the

plants or even sold to local gardening centres. Manuka oil has as many similar benefits to honey, in particular in the cosmetic and medical industries. It is used in skin care products due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties, promoting new cell growth, as a deodorant and is a deep moisturiser. It also has anti-inflammatory properties

useful for treating for skin irritation and infections, relieving coughs, colds and allergies and easing feelings of depression and stress. An expanding popularity of natural products such as manuka honey and oil gives cause for consideration to plant a few hectares and help look after New Zealand’s bees at the same time!

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

An ear for a good story

by Jill Dickie

One of our fondest childhood memories may well be sitting on the couch or laying in bed having a favourite story read to us, and then we continue through life growing our own story as the years go by. A single maize kernel also has a story to tell as it develops through various growth stages to reach maturity. The first growth stage covers the timeframe from planting to germination of the seedlings, which in warm moist conditions can be after six to ten days. In cooler or dry conditions this may take two weeks or longer. The suggested ideal would be temperatures ranging between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius and with the moisture content of the soil is approximately 60% of soil capacity. The next phase of growth sees new leaves unfolding about every third day. By the time there are eight leaves, the actual leaf area will have increased five to ten times and stem mass increased up to 100 times. The seedling should be approximately eight centimetres above the soil surface and ear initiation will have commenced. Once there are 12 leaves unfolded, lateral shoots bearing cobs from the sixth to the eighth nodes above the soil

surface are formed, and the potential number of seed buds on each ear has already been determined. In the following days, the final leaves will unfold, usually around 16, and the tassel will have been visible for two to three days. At this stage the plants’ demand for water and nutrition is especially high, the ear and its support

system fully developed, and starch beginning to replace the milky substance within each kernel. Maturity is reached when the kernel has achieved its maximum dry mass, which is recognised by a black line near the kernel base, and harvesting may be completed. Quite a life story!

Keeping track of productivity With growing input costs and external pressures on the business of farming, there is a way to ‘run ahead of the curve’ and create the necessary feedback loop in your grain business to drive productivity in the future. Twenty-five years ago, Ag Leader’s first commercial yield monitors entered the market in North America. It took farmers a few years to figure out this was the next big thing. Farmers now have a tool that they can collect multiple years of data and compare trends within fields. It is the foundation building block of precision agriculture, not just another gimmick to bolt onto your machine. In the first years of yield monitoring, farmers in North America began to see a return on investment from field drainage. Even in rented ground, property owners and the farmers jointly began to use drainage tools to increase production, and ultimately increase land value. Throughout the years, yield monitor has become the basis for all crop performance comparison on a commercial scale, from population comparisons, variety comparisons, comparing yield outcomes from tillage practices, nutrients, herbicides and fungicides. Yield monitor data is now used as part of the decision process to form the basis of variable rate planting maps, zone soil sampling, etc and with this tool, farmers can keep control of their

business — not leave decisions to a third party’s opinion. With the variables of farming, doesn’t it make sense to have a tool that can give you a baseline for comparison? Ag Leader pioneered the yield monitor and as a result, leads the industry in research and development in this field with OEM arrangements with key manufacturers to ensure customers can get the best out of it infield. With Ag Leader’s impressive back catalogue of older machine kits and modularity, there is a high chance we have a kit to fit your older machine. This technology is not just available to those large operations. With Ag Leader’s InCommand displays, you now have a tool that can be moved to your sprayer, spreader, planter, to control and steer these machines to maximise returns allyear round. With InCommand displays data can be viewed and used in many ways depending on how you want to see it. With the Agfiniti app on your iPad, you can show it to your mates at the pub or email it with an invoice. With SMS we can work with the data to give you a prescription for an application or planting rate, and with Ag Leader

SMSs colour-blind approach to data management, we can work with other brands of equipment to ensure you get the most from your hardware infield. Knowledge is power — to find out more about Ag Leader’s yield monitor

and the comprehensive line-up of precision agriculture tools available to work in your existing farming operation give your local Ag Leader dealer and precision agriculture specialists a call or visit agleader.com.au.

The beauty of bales The silage making process was used by many for a very long time, and the beauty of wrapped bales has changed the storage dynamics for many farmers. Creating the product in bales with plastic wrapping has become popular, especially for small farmers these eliminate the need for a silage pit, and the feed can be left in the paddock, often along a fenceline in the location they will be needed. Baled silage can also be conveniently purchased premade from a silage contractor. A good product has a particularly sweet vinegary smell from the fermentation process, and it is important to remember that silage wrap is an environmental hazard and should not be left the paddocks, burnt or buried on the farm — but needs to be put in an approved landfill. Making quality silage helps provide important nutrients for your stock. Avoid holes in the plastic, even pin holes can let air in and allows mould to grow, destroying the product. Large holes will allow vermin such as rats access to the feed. With wrapping, there is less concern for ruined feed as baling consolidates the crop and it is sealed immediately allowing the Lactobacilli and Streptococci present on the plant leaves to feed off the 3–3.5 per cent sugars present. These are the good bacteria that produce lactic acid, which pickles

the crop and prevents undesirable bacteria growing by causing a rapid rise in acidity (pH). If air gets in the bacteria, form a butyric acid fermentation, which is known to smell exceptionally bad, and you will see moulds. Over time the feed will look more like tobacco and is of very little feed value, and the stock

probably won’t eat it. If the bales shrink to half their original size — this is a sign of trouble. A check for good silage is — it should be yellow or brown-green in colour, with a sweet acid smell and firm texture. Overheated silage is a dark brownblack, a burnt caramel-tobacco smell and dry, disintegrated texture. Butyric

will be olive green with a putrid smell, and the product will be soft and slimy. Mouldy silage is dark brown with white mould and a musty smell, dry and it will have an easily broken texture. Whilst putrid/rotted silage will be green/black, wet and slimy with a putrid smell — do not feed bad silage to stock.

High-quality silage needs good quality pasture, no matter how good the fermentation is, the quality of the ensiled pasture and fermentation must be considered. Well-preserved silages are green, yellow or pale brown, whilst dark brown silage is generally poorly preserved. Silage is pickled pasture — when it is ensiled, its sugars are converted into lactic acid by bacteria. The lactic acid pickles the pasture, allowing it to be preserved for a lot longer than it would have been if left in the open air. A healthy, well-preserved stack has a sweet, tobacco smell. A foul, rancid smell indicates the presence of butyric acid from poor preservation. Be aware that moulds grow where silage has been exposed to air, and some fungi can produce toxins, which are bad for animal health. Quality silage is a good source of energy and protein for a milking cow and can be used as a fibre source when feeding high sugar or starch feeds. Silage made from low-quality pasture, or ensiled with low-quality fermentation, will not support high milk yield and will only be suitable for dry cows or as a fibre source to reduce the risk of acidosis. To produce good silage, it is best to cut

on the morning of a sunny day for rapid wilting. Cutting after one to two days of sunny weather will result in good sugar levels in the pasture. Avoid wilting for any more than 24 hours and compact the silage well. In a stack or pit use the heaviest wheeled vehicle available. Wheels should not sink into the pile of pasture any further than the depth of rubber.

K

For baled silage make sure that a high-density baler is used and seal the stack completely with a weighted, airtight cover. Wash old polythene before use to avoid contamination with the wrong bacteria and don’t open a covered stack to add more pasture on another day. Once the silage is sealed, nothing can be done to change the fermentation process. Poor fermentation such as air in the stack leads to major losses of protein quality and decreases the feeding value of the silage. Getting

things right while the grass is being harvested maximises the chance of good fermentation. Silage begins to break down once exposed to air and will begin to heat up as microorganisms turn the remaining sugars and protein into heat and energy. When feeding out, aim for as little time as possible between exposing the silage to air and the cow eating it. Do not allow cows access to spoiled silage. Growing good maize For many New Zealand dairy farmers, maize is a vital crop, and a significant amount of investment is used ensuring a good feed supply of maize is produced to make silage for stock feed. Grown on the dairy farm maize adds value to a farm’s feed supply and it helps mitigate climatic risk, extract soil nutrients from high fertility effluent paddocks, and the crop is often used as part of a pasture renewal programme, however not all paddocks are equally suited for maize production. Monitoring is necessary to maximise yield, and the programme should include weeds, pests and diseases — soil N sampling, soil moisture if irrigated and crop maturity. Often technical advisers and contractors can provide this service as it is important to regularly monitor crops — especially in the first two months of growth. To grow high-yielding maize for the least cost consider the factors, which make the contractors’ jobs speedy and efficient and reduce harvest costs, such as paddock location, access, entrance ways, track conditions, culvert strength and overhead wires. The seed is normally sown around 5cm deep; however, an uneven soil surface makes it difficult for the planter to sow at a uniform depth resulting in variable emergence. Steep paddocks are not only difficult for cultivation and harvest but tend not to yield well, and low lying wet paddocks often lead to cultivation delays and don’t produce well unless drought conditions prevail. Wet paddocks risk loss of soil structure under cultivation, which leads to lower yields. The plant requires substantial nitrogen and potassium both

of which are present in dairy soils. Longterm effluent paddocks have high N and K levels and are often ideal for growing a deep-rooting crop of maize often without using bagged fertiliser. It is vital maize crops are checked for harvest maturity three weeks prior to harvesting. Good quality maize silage is best made when whole plant dry matter is between 30–40 per cent. If

it is harvested less than 30 per cent the silage stack will be wet resulting in stack leachate; this leachate represents nutrient loss. If greater than 40 per cent

DM, stack compaction and air exclusion are much more difficult. More information is available on DairyNZ’s maize silage website.

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES Keeping bees buzzing

by Ann van Engelen

September is Bee Aware Month and there is a real buzz around the country as people help raise awareness of the crucial role bees play in our lives and celebrate their importance as we ensure they are well fed. The bee population in New Zealand contributes approximately $5 billion to our economy annually, and one of the easiest ways to help bees is by planting bee-friendly gardens to provide them nourishment, so they can help pollinate our food. Bees will forage on wildflowers and other bee-friendly plants for nectar and pollen, which provide carbohydrates and protein for growth and energy. Well-nourished bees are more capable of fending off disease and parasites. Everyone can do their bit by planting

flowering plants in the garden. Waterways, hedges and shelterbelts are examples of other areas that beefriendly plants can be grown. Many farmers and lifestyle block owners have beehives established on their properties, either their own or allowing a beekeeper the rights to establish hives and taking care of them. If pursuing keeping bees yourself, contact Apiculture New Zealand or your local beekeeping club for information on how to care for and help protect our buzzy friends properly.

Ensure you have quality beehive boxes as these are the bees home and are both a brood chamber and honey storage unit and need to be durable to keep the bees and honey safe. Full depth boxes are best as the frames are interchangeable. You can be bee-friendly by not spraying your garden with harmful pesticides. Consider whether spraying is necessary and if you choose to proceed do not spray when plants are in flower or bees are present and spray early in the morning or at sunset. Crops intended to be self-pollinating perform better if pollinated by bees and the future of farming is reliant on people playing their part in protecting them. We all need to ‘be good to bees’ and protect their environment. Bee-friendly trees and shrubs including bottlebrush, tree lucerne, kowhai, manuka, cabbage, nikau, native flax and various fruit trees can be planted along windbreaks, waterway margins and roadsides. Many shelter

and erosion control plants also produce abundant flowers to feed bees — so choosing multipurpose plants is smart farming for healthy bees. You can also provide fresh, pesticidefree drinking water for these little workers by filling a saucepan of water and putting pebbles or twigs in the water for them to rest on while they drink.

FOR FARM OR GARDEN ZONDA BUMBLEBEE HIVE NATURAL RESULTS; NATURALLY GOOD

In the past, naturally occurring pollinators were abundant. However, over time with the extensive use of broad-spectrum insecticides, along with the decrease of the wild honeybee population, the situation has changed. Growers are now seeing the many benefits of using bumblebees to achieve essential pollination. Bumblebees have proven to be exceptionally effective pollinator of crops in greenhouses and in open air situations, including the home garden. We have different hives available to suit your needs! The hive is fully self-contained and requires no maintenance. It is easy to use and comes complete with instructions. Contact us to find out what we can do for you!

Learn about beekeeping

Everbee Productions ltd Factory direct Bee hive lids

During the past five years, Greg Harrington, has taught more than 550 students about the beauty and care of bees through his two-day introductory beekeeping course. Greg’s business The Bee Hive originated as a retail store that supplied beekeeping products and education. The education side of the business grew faster than anticipated, and Greg was doing more teaching — so he made the decision to close the retail side of the company and concentrate on teaching and running The Bee Hive as a webbased store. Greg teaches at MIT Otara Campus on a Saturdays and Sundays, and the classes have been reported as one of the most popular beekeeping courses in New Zealand and spaces fill fast. Starting Saturday morning and leaving Sunday afternoon participants are given all the knowledge they need to keep bees. “We are your one-stop shop when it comes to bees — education/training, beekeeping supplies and live bees to get you started,” says Greg. “The Bee Hive has now been open for four years, and we have had a diverse range of students come to us. Their reasons for attending have included

stress relief, having a hobby, understanding the plight of bees and wanting to increase bee numbers. “Farmers, lifestyle block owners, commercial growers and people wanting to become full-time beekeepers have attended; with the youngest student being nine years old — the eldest 82 years old.” Greg also teaches NZQA level three apiculture for Taratahi Agriculture Centre and is an American foulbrood (AFB) course instructor for AsureQuality. Check out course dates on the calendar at thebeehivesolutions.co.nz or email thebeehive@xtra. co.nz or call Greg on 027 292 4958 for more information.

Pay attention!

Grit will get us through by Matt King, MP for Northland

It is in my nature, and I hope inherent to my character to present a positive picture when I am able.

It is true that I am often able to do that. As a Northland resident, I feel my family and I are privileged to live in a beautiful part of the country. As a Northland farmer, I know that the rural economy is strong and that farmers from Warkworth to the Cape are what they have always been — the cornerstone of the regional economy. We farmers have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to be thanked for. Yet we live in worrying times, both domestically and globally. Moreover, the reason is not hard to find: it is the uncertainty that surrounds us. Right now, we are entirely justified in asking ourselves, what the heck is going on? Overseas the superpowers seem to be embarking on a series of trade wars, which for the moment, has unknown ramifications for our exports.

ARE YOUR GIRLS LAYING GOLDEN EGGS? No, we didn’t think so!

Brexit seems to be in disarray with again uncertainty of how it will impact on us. Free trade agreements — existing and envisaged — no longer appear to have the potency or the protection they once delivered. Here in New Zealand (and after nine years of stability), we have an unprecedented level of industrial action, we have the failure of two major construction companies with potentially dire consequences for dairying in the case of Ebert Construction and the Synlait plants in Pokeno and Dunsandel — and we have a government front bench seemingly comprised entirely of loose cannons. Yet, for all that I remain positive. Not because I have any great confidence in the present government. I haven’t. It is because I have confidence in what I see around me. I have confidence in us. Late last month I attended the National Party’s Northern Regional Conference — my first as your Northland MP. As always at these conferences the rural community was well-represented, and it was a delight for me to be again among my fellow farmers.

We like to let our customers do the talking. To see what they have to say, visit our website www.grandpasfeeders.co.nz

What I found remarkable, though, was the spirit that permeated throughout the conference. Whereas we might have been forgiven for being a little dispirited after the election result, I instead found a remarkable degree of positiveness and productivity. The delegates seemed upbeat, almost buoyant. A lot of that had to do with some excellent keynote speeches, delivered by our senior MPs, former Australian prime minister John Howard and of course our own leader Simon Bridges, and I should not forget to mention here some extremely sage advice received from our always affable former leader Sir John Key. Even so, it was more than that. I had the sense that the conference and indeed the party as a whole had a plan — a way forward that even in this era of uncertainty will restore stability to our great country come the next election. Of course, in the meantime, we have a lot to get through, and to paraphrase William Shakespeare we may have a long winter of discontent. Despite that, with a bit of grit common to farmers everywhere, we’ll get through it — and spring will be back.

TerraTrencher a big hit

Arborists & Tree Contractors • Tree Felling/Dismantling • Winching • Stump Grinding/Chipping • Digger/Hiab/Grapples

A Kiwi-designed portable trencher is proving very popular with fibre-optic cable installers both in New Zealand and in numerous overseas countries. Originally called a Terrasaw and targeted at farmers, it became popular with irrigation installers and more recently with crews installing cable. “Many countries presently have huge multibillion-dollar fibre broadband installations underway, creating demand for an efficient, tidy way to bury small diameter cable and conduit,” says director Keith Fergusson. “The TerraTrencher is a power trencher you can pick up in one hand and transport in the boot of a car. The neat, narrow 40mm wide trench is perfect for burying data lines, water lines, electric fence cable under gates and power.” Driven by a high-quality powerhead, it is a rugged and versatile power tool that has unique advantages, especially where access is limited. “Many homeowners and municipal authorities want as little disturbance to their quality turf as possible. Because a TerraTrencher removes so little soil, it is very easy to reinstate a lawn after

trenching is completed,” says Keith. “A large percentage of New Zealand broadband installation crews now use this technology. One of the big drawcards is the dramatic saving in time. We regularly see customers who can now complete a trench in as little as one-tenth of the time previously taken, with much less physical effort. It is also one of the most affordable trenchers you can buy. “We have customers where the product had completely paid for itself in the first three weeks of use. “The most popular model is the TT500. It can dig to a depth of around 500mm, while the TT800 digs more than 600mm deep and is typically used to bury electric cable and transplant trees.” For more information contact Terrasaw Industries Ltd at terrasaw.co.nz or phone 09 431 6400.

The dream to build by Ann van Engelen

Whether you are designing and building yourself, or buying set plan, there’s nothing more exciting than a brand-new house or fully-renovated historic home. Whether you are living on a farm, lifestyle block or in an urban setting, the kiwi dream is home ownership and no matter what scale you are thinking, it is important to have an understanding of council regulations for your area, contracts and exclusions, time frames for the project completion, costs and possible hidden extras. The time difference for project completion varies and generally unless you are buying a ‘house package’ an accurate final quote can be difficult, particularly if you are not set in your plans and ideas. Every ‘change’ you make once the build is underway will add to your costs as you are charged for such so ensure you have a set layout of the complete house design before starting. Ensure when you are asking for quotes that you are comparing the same things because at times cheaper quotes will leave out items you have to put in later, or under-quote on items your contractor expects you to change later. It is suggested that you allocate at least 10 per cent extra funding for unforeseen costs to help keep stress to a minimum. Websites such as BRANZ.co.nz and building.govt.nz have useful information explaining building codes, safety standards, sign off and maintenance. BRANZ is an independent and impartial research, testing and consulting organisation inspiring the building and construction industry to provide

better buildings for New Zealanders — transforming insightful research into accessible, actionable knowledge. When requesting a build with your own plans a good way to estimate the cost is to engage a Quantity Surveyor to price your project. Group home builders will generally be cheaper for one of their standard plans; however, these can be restrictive in the options you can choose. Designing with an architectural draughtsman will usually give you what you ask for, and an architect will give you a lot more, but you may find that what you want is more expensive than what you initially expected to pay. Check the reputation of the builder you choose

and be wary of altering any contract with variations unless it is agreed to in writing and discuss progress payments in advance where necessary. Ensure your financial institution is reputable, have personal and builders’ public liability insurances in place before your build begins. With all builds, ensure you read and understand all the warranties that you are presented as these come with clauses such as ensuring you maintain and clean your roof annually and the warranty may exclude the use of specific cleaning products meaning your warranty is then void if these instructions are not followed.

Landscaping with thought When landscaping a property, good plant placement and choices enhance your home, making it more attractive and comfortable for yourself as well native birds and bees. Your decisions can affect how much enjoyment you get from your outdoor living areas so think about your site as a whole and have a clear idea of what you use the outdoor area for such as entertaining, playing, growing fruit and vegetables or space for pets. Your design will be a determining factor in the amount of effort you need to spend watering and maintaining the area. Soil type, house placement, waterways, climate and how much sun and shade you have helps determine what and where to plant. Too much shade from plants in winter might make your home cold and damp; however, planting certain plants in full sun may not be good for them. Knowing the mature size of trees and shrubs you may include in your project is important. Trees and shrubs can create screens between your home and

neighbourhood or road noise to lower noise levels creating a healthier mood for all to enjoy. Planting to protect against erosion is beneficial if your site is near a stream or on the coast. Trees also provide some protection against stormwater erosion and reducing run-off, whilst their root networks hold the soil together. Your local or regional council often has lists of suitable plants for your area and nurseries also have a variety of information and options available. Talk to your neighbours and see what works for them. If you choose plants that are suitable for local conditions, your garden will be easier to look after and might not need as much water. Selecting native plants that are endemic to the area can give you a low maintenance garden and attract wildlife such as tui and woodpigeon.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when difference machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

Managing nitrogen in avocado by Erica Faber, Orchard Productivity Manager, Just Avocados

Nitrogen is essential for plant reproduction, cell division and growth. As we go into avocado flowering and fruit set, nitrogen management is critical — this is the time where correct timing and rates have the biggest impact. You will notice nitrogen deficiency symptoms (pale green or yellow leaves and stunted growth) on old leaves first as flowers, fruit or new vegetative flush pull nitrogen from older leaves, which can become deficient and even abscise. The significance of this is that nitrogen reserves that are built up in the previous year are used to support early growth in the following spring. It also means that leaves are an important additional sink of nitrogen during winter and that the remobilisation of internal nitrogen reserves is crucial for optimal shoot growth, flowering and fruit set since bud break occurs when conditions (end of winter) are not optimal for root nitrogen uptake. Maintaining good winter leaf health and nutrition is important — do leaf sampling for accurate nutritional status of these leaves to inform your input strategy. Soil and root health is also crucial — a prolific and balanced microorganism population and a healthy soil environment for them is important for optimum nitrogen efficiency.

While it is always important to ensure sufficient nitrogen supply for optimum performance and yield, it is important that we do not assume that more is better. Nitrogen is the nutrient most often abused in terms of this approach. When overapplied, it negatively affects the uptake of other minerals and results in an increase in fruitlet drop from November to February as well as mummified fruit that remain hanging on t he trees. Nitrogen management plays a significant role in determining your bottom line so ensure you manage Observing nitrogen deficiency: look out for loss of colour in the leaves, sparse foliage, smaller leaves, lack of vegetative growth, nitrogen well. lower yields and premature defoliation as possible signs Avoworks provides technical consultancy for avocado avocado growing conditions. Law brought the team together to present a cohesive stance for a more comprehensive approach to M bovis than the government’s mass culling of cows. The group has communicated what it believes is a long-term solution to managing the disease. “MPI has chosen to view M bovis solely as a contagious disease. It’s actually a symptom of immune system deficiency/collapse prompted by a nutritional imbalance that can be remedied without the present trauma to farmers and animals.” the statement says. “Our Farm Systems management team approach is to focus on altering those conditions that we believe compromise any animal’s immune system and make them susceptible to disease — inadequate nutrition

from minerally unbalanced, microbe deficient soils. “Our approach is to help farmers achieve a better immunity in their herds, rendering M bovis ineffective.” “Our problems in agriculture are born from a chain of events, beginning with the application of unbalanced fertiliser programmes. Past agricultural science has emphasised chemistry instead of biology.” The team says this approach has led to minerally depleted soils, which has altered soil, plant, cow rumen and effluent pH levels, leading to undernourished soil microbes, plants and animals, “Optimum soil pH is above 6.3. NZ’s soil pH has been consistently dropping under the NPK system due to the overuse of chemical fertilisers and animal and human health problems have been increasing as a result. The NPK-driven fertiliser system, and

resulting pH issue is at the core of the Mycoplasma bovis problem. This is not a disease to be eradicated so much as it is a nutritional issue to be remedied by altering our approach to soil fertility and animal nutrition.” In addition to eliminating the further emergence of M bovis in New Zealand herds, the group believes regenerative farming practices will have positive effects on New Zealand’s farming industry as a whole. “Regenerative farming helps restore ecosystem function, build topsoil, sequester atmospheric carbon and create nutrient dense, spray-free food, which we need and our markets are crying out for. Farmers requiring more advice about a regenerative farming system can contact David Law at Forward Farming Biological Consultancy who will direct them to a consultant in their area.

DAIRY

Compliance is necessary When working in the dairy industry, it is important to understand the different compliance regulations. Harvesting, manufacturing, importing, storing or transporting dairy products means meeting legal requirements to ensure such products are safe for consumption and suitable for their intended use. These requirements depend on whether you are milking animals, manufacturing, storing and transporting dairy products and if these activities are for the New Zealand market or export. Dairy operations must meet the requirements of the Animal Products Act 1999 and regulations, notices and specifications explain the act’s requirement. It is important to keep up with any new or revised dairy information, including requirements, consultations, policies and other content changes. If you milk animals and either sell the milk to a dairy processor or make dairy products that you will sell, you must operate under a registered risk management programme setting out the procedures for operating your business. If you want to sell the milk from your animals directly to consumers for consumption as raw (unpasteurised) milk, you have to register under the Regulated Control Scheme. You do not need an RMP if this is the only use of the milk from your animals, but if you

Pay attention!

around road works

BUSCK FARM BRIDGES

intend to manufacture dairy products for export, you need to have a registered and verified RMP. If you manufacture dairy products for sale in New Zealand or Australia — the domestic market — then you must meet the requirements of the APA. It means you must have a food control plan or an RMP. The requirements for transporting or storing dairy products depend on whether the product is intended for

export or for sale in Australia and New Zealand. The Food Act 2014 came into force on March 1 2016, and the act applies to all new food businesses that started from that date. To help ensure you are meeting all the requirements for products you intend to sell on the domestic market MPI has developed RMP templates for some products. Research to reduce nitrogen DairyNZ is leading a seven-year research project that aims to breed cattle with less nitrogen in their urine with the aim to reduce sector-wide nitrate leaching by 20 per cent. “One of the key commitments of the Dairy Tomorrow strategy is to ‘protect and nurture the environment for future generations’,” says DairyNZ geneticist, Mark Camara. “A team of researchers is making good on that commitment by investigating the role of genetics in reducing nitrogen (N) in cows’ urine. The research involves thousands of cows on farms around New Zealand and scientists are developing breeding strategies and estimating the expected reduction in N leaching — potentially up to 20 per cent. “If we can breed dairy cows that excrete less N in their urine, we can reduce the amount of N reaching our waterways. That’s good for farming and good for our environment. “Previous research has shown that, in dairy cows fed N-rich diets, milk urea levels and urinary N rise together, but this environmental correlation doesn’t necessarily mean that cows with genetically-low milk urea that are fed the same diet as typical cows will have low urinary N.” If this ‘genetic correlation’ doesn’t hold up, selecting for low milk urea won’t reduce urinary N. “We don’t know if reducing urinary N would compromise other breeding worth traits through other, unfavourable, genetic correlations or improve them through favourable ones.” Verifying these genetic relationships isn’t easy. It takes many measurements of urinary N, milk urea and other BW traits on related cows to separate the

Mark Camara, DairyNZ geneticist

environmental and genetic contributions to these relationships. To take these measurements a hightech gadget developed by AgResearch is attached to free-ranging cows. It channels urine past a sensor and records the time, volume, and nitrogen concentration of every urination. Pairing direct urinary nitrogen data with indirect measurements such as milk urea and applying complex statistical models can then estimate the genetic correlation between milk urea and urinary nitrogen. “If it’s high enough, we can use milk urea as a predictor trait. If it’s not, we’ll have to find another way.”

Maori sheep and beef farmers are encouraged to enter the Ahuwhenua Trophy, Te Puni Kokiri Excellence in Maori Farming Award 2019 for sheep and beef. The 2019 competition was officially launched by the chairman of Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Andrew Morrison, at the Red Meat Sector conference in Napier. “The Red Meat Sector conference is the perfect forum to launch the 2019 Ahuwhenua Trophy competition for sheep and beef,” he said. “Maori are a major player in our sector, and they bring both scale and innovation, which contribute hugely to our sheep and beef exports and the strength of the New Zealand economy. The Ahuwhenua Trophy provides not only an opportunity to showcase the achievements and sustainable practices of Maori farmers, but also to put the spotlight on the whole of the sheep and beef sector.” Ahuwhenua Trophy management committee chairman, Kingi Smiler says “Maori sheep and beef farmers throughout the country are doing great things on their land and the competition offers them a great opportunity to showcase their efforts to their peers

and all others in the primary sector. “Many Maori farmers are leading the way in terms of developing and implementing long-term sustainable practices on their land as kaitiaki, as well as embracing new technologies. It is important that the wider community understand this and there is no better way of doing this than by entering the Ahuwhenua Trophy competition.” Mr Smiler has issued a special plea to farm consultants and other rural professionals to support the competition and encourages Maori trusts, incorporations and individual whanau to consider entering the competition. “Too often some Maori farmers don’t realise how good their farms are and a word of encouragement from rural professionals will often be the catalyst for them to enter. The Ahuwhenua Trophy is an iconic taonga, and throughout its existence, it has built up a rich cultural and spiritual history as well as being a symbol of excellence in farming. Deer velvet looking good

Long-term prospects for New Zealand velvet in the major Asian markets are looking positive with an explosion in demand for consumer-ready velvet-based products in Korea.

“Ten years ago this product category didn’t even exist,” says Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths. “In the past six months, 23 new velvet-based healthy food products have been launched in Korea — the majority of them using New Zealand velvet. “Yuhan Pharmaceuticals, which signed a memorandum of understanding with DINZ last year, is now a major player in this market. Their impressive New Origin concept store/cafe in Seoul features recently launched products that contain New Zealand velvet and deer farm imagery on large video screens inside.” Mr Griffiths says the Chinese market for velvet has yet to make the leap into consumer-ready healthy food products, but many manufacturers are aware of what has happened in Korea and believe it can be repeated in China. “The main barrier is a lack of confidence in the path to market for consumer products based on New Zealand velvet. These products cost millions of dollars to develop and market, so manufacturers need to be convinced they are not infringing a rule or regulation along the way.” To provide confidence to potential customers, DINZ is working with some exporters and New Zealand Trade and

Enterprise to commission a report by a respected Chinese regulatory expert on the pathway to market. This report will be provided to key manufacturers when it has been completed. “In the last three years to improve consumer safety, there has been a major tightening of the rules and regulations governing food and traditional medicines in China. This has included tighter standards for overseas suppliers. As a result, New Zealand velvet producers have had to create clean areas in their deer sheds and to meet tougher cold chain requirements. In China, velvet processors have had to make similar upgrades — some have built completely new factories.”

A major new Chinese super ministry is being established that is expected to have regulatory oversight of the trade in traditional medicines and manufactured health foods. Until the new regulatory regime is operating, manufacturers will be uncertain about the rules that will apply to their operations. “A further unsettling factor has been the recent clamp down on importers for importing illegal products and for evading customs duties. Some smaller velvet importers have been prosecuted,” he says. “Larger, reputable importers say this will be a good thing in the longrun for the reputation of imported velvet and particularly for New Zealand. It will tidy up the industry.”

Wild intentions

MUFFLER SERVICES

by Andy Bryenton

It’s hard to credit it now, but not so long ago in automotive terms, Harley Davidson motorcycles were considered to be the patriotic, gentlemanly choice for American riders, while the rebels and rowdy bunch chose to pilot British machines. The reason for this was twofold — while the big US bikes looked great and cruised like a dream, flat-out speed was the realm of the English brands like Vincent, BSA and of course, Triumph. Of course, being motorcycle enthusiasts, there was no way that these Brit imports were going to remain standard. Choppers — with their raked front ends, massive handlebars and pared-back bodywork were one variant. However, the other — the classic ‘bob’ was the other. Now Triumph has released a factory version, which cleverly imitates this timeless body mod. The first thing you’ll notice is the classic attention to detail on the reworked, remade Bonneville Bobber. Looking like it just rolled out of a black and white photo featuring Steve McQueen (a famous Triumph fan), this is an exercise in nostalgia tempered with 21st-century technology. The 1,200cc engine at the heart of the beast has been tuned especially for this application, providing a wave of ample torque from way down low and up into the mid-range. It retains

Return of the warrior by Andy Bryenton

Suzuki has been producing a small, super-compact off-roader under various names for the past 40 years now — the Samurai was the first in this lineage, and the current Jimny is the latest. In between, we’ve seen the boxy, military-jeep inspired form move with the times, but the recipe has remained the same. It’s one beloved of real off-roaders — take a peppy, high-revving engine, add a generous amount of ground clearance, simple, wheel-at-each-corner chassis design, a gearbox and differentials, which can take the hard knocks, and wrap it up in a price which makes the big boys of the off-road world look bloated and expensive. Like the light little Caterham on the race track or the Toyota MR2 on the road, it’s an exercise in cutting right to the core of what a machine should do, then adding absolutely nothing unnecessary. Which brings us to the latest iteration of the Jimny. It has added something, which the outgoing model doesn’t have, inspired, perhaps, by the success of the retro-cool Ignis, also in the Suzuki stable. It looks fantastic. Cute as a button but still sharp-edged and eager, like a Rottweiler puppy or a baby version of Mercedes’ G-Wagen. The crisp, boxy

Pay attention!

creases and sharp lines hint at serious off-road chops, evoking everything from the old Willy’s world war two jeep through to the first edition Toyota Land Cruiser. Moreover, because it’s part of the Samurai-Escudo-Jimny heritage, it has a 1.5 litre four-pot motor, proper four-wheel drive with high and low ratios, and that absurdly lightweight to actually deliver on its promises. For decades, the smallest Suzuki off-roader in the garage has offered supreme value for money. It’s even been a weapon of choice for serious off-road racers, who value its lightness and power to weight ratio when skipping over mud puddles and hitting terrifyingly steep slopes. Now, Suzuki has added a real sense of retro-inspired cool to the mix, in the same way, Fiat or Mini did when they reinvented their 1960s classics. For practicality and style, this is definitely one to pick!

Nomad at heart by Andy Bryenton

Since 2003 Volkswagen’s big, capable and very comfortable Touareg sports utility has been the hallmark to beat when it comes to going places off the beaten track in style. Immediately achieving a position only previously occupied by the most refined of Range Rovers, the sure-footed machine named after the hardy Berber subtribe of the Sahara became a favourite of those who placed engineering, ride and technology over empty badge prestige. The all-new 2018 Touareg is new not just in name, but new from the ground up. A ‘back to the drawing board’ approach, which has given the big Volkswagen clear-cut, handsomely aggressive lines and some of the biggest, most knockout alloy wheels on a factory sports utility. Tellingly, this slightly bigger, definitely bolder Touareg shares a platform with the upmarket Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga, but eschews big noting in favour of packing in more of what drivers want beyond the badge. It is, after all, an iteration of the ‘people’s car’ — and Volkswagen knows exactly how to give the people what they want. The cabin is nothing short of futuristic, with a crisp head-up display acting as the curtain raiser to a massive sweep of digital readouts — both electronic dials and a 15 inch infotainment screen, which uses tiles in the fashion of a Microsoft tablet. Configure it how you like, and everything is there at a fingertip’s command. If you want to be wrapped in a quiet, leather-swathed, nicely accented cocoon of serenity as you cruise, there’s now no need to buy a Mercedes S-Class.

The Touareg will also get you places a big luxury sedan could never dream of. Power comes from a smooth and whisper-quiet diesel six, designed to move all this luxury along with frugal and unobtrusive grace. Nevertheless,

for those who still live with the misconception that an SUV must still be a lumbering creature, it despatches 0–100 kph in just over six seconds. Not long ago, that was v8 coupe fast. Best of all, the Touareg is nimble when it comes

to low speeds and tight spaces, boasting a turning circle reminiscent of that other notable VW — the Golf GTi. Storage in the rear for the gear is also more than ample, meaning that the Touareg is as practical as it is comfortable.
