Established through Treaty of Waitangi settlement legislation, the eight-member Te OneroaA-Tohe Board has an even split of iwi and local government members and has been tasked with developing a management plan for the beach. Board chair Haami Piripi says the beach is well-known by tangata whenua for ‘Te Ara Wairua’, the spiritual pathway the deceased take on the journey to their ancient homeland. “This beach is of extreme cultural, historical and spiritual significance — not just to the five iwi who make up Te Hiku o Te Ika, (‘the tail of the fish’; Ngati Kuri, Te Aupouri, Ngai Takoto, Ngati Kahu and Te Rarawa), but to the wider community, Maori Haami Piripi, Te Oneroa-A-Tohe board chair and non-Maori, right across Northland and New Zealand. “Before we can develop the plan, the shape the future uses of the beach board wants to find out what people across a raft of potential areas including think the important issues facing the cultural, resource management and beach are and how these should be economic considerations. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES August 2019
Fonterra directors’ election Nominations for the Fonterra Board of Directors’ Election opened on Friday, August 2, with an election to be held for two farmer-elected directors. This year Donna Smit and Andy Macfarlane retire by rotation. Both have confirmed that they are standing for reelection this year. The independent assessment process will run first with a nomination period of August 2–16. The independently assessed candidates will be rigorously assessed by an independent selection panel of three highly respected governance experts. This year, the panel comprises Tony Carter, chairman of Air New Zealand and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Joan Withers, chair of Mercury NZ and The Warehouse Group and Rob Campbell, chair of Skycity Entertainment Group, Summerset, Tourism Holdings and WEL Networks. Their role is to shortlist and recommend the best candidates to Fonterra’s shareholders. The Returning Officer will announce the Independent Nomination Process candidates on September 17. The Non-Assessment Process, where farmers can put themselves forward as a candidate for the board outside the Independent Assessment Process, will follow with the nomination period running from September 17–27. The Returning Officer will confirm all Farmer Directors’ Election candidates

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
by Ann van Engelen Grant and Emma Plaisted have nearly 12 acres of orchard where they grow tamarillos, feijoa and avocado.
T
he couple met at police training college in Wellington and entered into the fruit growing industry through good friends. “We helped them harvest their avocados and things and decided that the lifestyle looked quite good. We found this property nearby with the previous owners needing to retire,” says Grant. “They had a lot of infrastructure in place, and we re-established and refreshed the orchard. Originally we had avocado and red tamarillos but now grow feijoa and gold and orange tamarillos as well. Diversification is part of the difficulty in growing tamarillos and as they are seasonal and feijoa make it a real fruit salad orchard.
“When we started nine years ago, the liberibacter virus was going around from a psyllid, which is a tiny cicada. It affects the nightshade family — tomato, potato and tamarillo. The pest comes from North America and sucks the life out of the plants, and once the trees are affected, they will die. Our native cicada doesn’t cause a problem. “Tamarillos used to grow all over the district, but now there are just a few registered growers. We replanted the whole tamarillo section and propagate our own seeds. If we plant this season, we will get fruit next season. It is approximately an 18-month crop that you get about five years from but we plan on two to three years for consistency.”

The couple says tamarillo is a very rewarding fruit to grow. “They look and taste lovely with a lot of health benefits including antioxidants and Vitamin C. They originate from the rain forests in Peru and need light, warmth and free-draining soil because they are shallow-rooted. Maungatapere is a little horticultural belt on volcanic ash, so it is great for these types of orchards. Feijoas are new to us, and we only have a few trees. “With issues like myrtle rust, many trees have been removed and burnt around the area, and we thought we would try them. “Hopefully, they are not so susceptible from other orchards because we are a distance apart. We have had one fruiting season of feijoas. They are a good complementary crop with a short, intense picking season, and our grading equipment works with the size, shape and style of both fruit. “Feijoas fruit first, and that helps when we go to the markets. Tasty Tamarillos is our online business, and we send our fruit all over the country. Our clients order direct from us, and we pick one day and pack it the next morning. There is no refrigeration process and we get very positive feedback. The further south you go, the harder it is to get the fruit, so South Islanders love ordering direct. “It is nice to have direct contact with our customers instead of
packhouses and wholesalers. You can be disappointed as growers when you go into a store and see shrivelled up black stems on the shelves as that is not the quality product you initially sold. “We have managed to get a consistent avocado crop and supply local markets and at times, export. “The crops can suffer from pests, but with our integrated management system we monitor the pests, and we use the absolute minimum chemicals to deal with things but can’t be totally organic with other orchards around that spray. “We love growing produce that other people enjoy. “Smaller orchards mean you can create more niche type products, and you can chat to clients and see what they are enjoying and change things around to their needs. “Finding ways to use produce that doesn’t meet our grading standards provides a steady annual income through our registered kitchen — adding value to the weather affected and windfall fruit. We harvest by hand with friends and family, which is very labour intensive, and have contractors with hydro ladders for the tops of the avocado trees. “Supplying good quality fruit is our real key and the main thing we are interested in. “We are very privileged to be able to work in other jobs and enjoy owning the orchard — it is a wonderful lifestyle.”
The produce is mostly harvested by hand with the goal of supplying high-quality fruit to customers

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
CONTINUING WITH
determination by Ann van Engelen
Annette Williams, grew up farming Jersey cattle and bred the Lostahill Jersey Stud from a young age until five years ago when she and her late husband Murray relocated to a 303-hectare beef property in Tinopai.
“W
e lived in the renovated woolshed as we awaited the completion of our dream home looking over the mighty Kaipara Harbour,” says Annette. “Three weeks after we moved into our stunning new home, Murray was killed in a fatal accident. I lost my soulmate and best friend and was left with the decision to carry on or walk away.” Devastated Annette continued beef farming in Murray’s memory. “He loved it here despite the intimidating hills. He fished in the harbour and pig hunted locally. Just before his untimely death we were out
on the harbour, and we looked at our new home on the skyline, and I felt the warmth of his arm around me as he said ‘Love we have it all’. Unfortunately, we lost it all too soon.” Annette fattens heifers and steers on a grass-based system with heifers killed out at a carcase weight of 250– 300kgs while steer carcase weight is 350–400kgs. “I am proud of the weight I achieve with my local trade cattle sent to Wilson Hellaby meat processors. The farm was run down with poor fencing and pasture control, and I engaged a fencing contractor to establish new fences. We

started with 40 paddocks and now have 66 paddocks with a trough in each and nutritious pasture. “We fenced off all waterways, wetlands, foreshore and native forests, which the regional council has described as one of the most prestigious stands of kauri in private ownership. “The farm is soil tested annually and an environmentally friendly fertiliser from Total Fert is applied according to the test results. “With losing Murray, one of the biggest battles I have found is being a female in a male environment. We often attended the Wellsford Sales yard together, and months after Murray’s death I went alone and as I sat in the sale arena a guy kicked me in the backside and said ‘shouldn’t you be home doing the vacuum cleaning’. I replied ‘no mate, I pressed the button and left it to the robot’. “On another occasion, I walked into the old-fashioned tearooms at the saleyards, and the chatter stopped instantly with all eyes on me, I counted 12 old men. I went to the counter for a cuppa and sat alone in the far corner the chatter restarted. “Farming is still my passion even in adverse conditions. When I go to stock sales, I am confident to do my own bidding but appreciate advice from my stock buyer Neil Donaldson who works for Wilson Hellaby. Gone are the days of putting my arm around the Jersey cows’ necks and patting them. “The pure beef steers are scary at times because they are raised on their mothers and have minimal human contact. A lot of town folk don’t realise the dangers we face while drafting cow reared beef cattle. You need your wits about you because they are so different

Annette and Murray Williams moved from Lostahill in Ruawai to Foundahill in Tinopai and focussed on beef farming in temperament to hand-reared dairy beef cattle. “Last year we had a fire on the boundary, which burnt three kilometres of boundary fence that was constantly maintained. I ended up with a $10k bill for a fire I never started. I now tell farmers to check their farm policies as few insure their fences. “There doesn’t appear to be a lot of women in this area who own and run their own farms. I find it can be isolating and feel as if I am farming in a fishbowl. It would be great if there was a discussion group close by as I miss the input that Murray put into our farm. “Eighteen months after losing Murray, I achieved a Diploma in Creative Writing. On the advice of my tutor, I intend to
write a novel about my many good experiences, and challenges, of being a women beef farmer with my three constant companions — my guard dog and two working dogs. “It takes guts and sheer determination to succeed and carry on but with the awesome views of the sea, and native forest. I feel that I am living in paradise and after 30 years on the flats in Ruawai with no views at a farm called Lostahill, we moved here to Foundahill and it is a place to enjoy while I farm, write short stories and do my art.”

A utopia began beetopia by Ann van Engelen Grass Esposti fell in love with bees the moment she opened a beehive for the first time some seven years ago and has not looked back.
“I
had a utopia moment when I saw these hard-working insects in their hive and was surprised how serene and calm they were,” says Grass. Grass and her husband Anthony opened Beetopia NZ Ltd in July 2018 with daughter Michelle and the support of Francis and James of F&J Honey NZ. “When we relocated from Italy to New Zealand, we received the wonderful opportunity of managing lifestyle properties and decided to learn about pollination and bees to improve our orchards’ health and productivity. We have since started an Airbnb and were recently chosen as the first Honey Tasting and Bee Experience in New
Zealand. We also support Wainui and Ahuroa Primary Schools providing hives and training on-site, so children gain beekeeping experience and then spread awareness to other students. Children are far more understanding and in tune with nature than we give them credit for. Thus through education and raising awareness about pollinators, in general, our children become advocates for their environment. We feel inspired children are the future of Aotearoa. “Our Airbnb experience is unique and includes learning about bees and tasting 30 different varieties of honey from the Far North, deep South, Great Barrier and Niue. You get to taste what clover tastes like throughout New

CROSSINGS CREATE EASY ACCESS AND EFFICIENCY ON DAIRY FARM. Around New Zealand more than 99% of all regular stock crossing points on dairy farms have bridges or culverts. That equates to more than 40,000 stock crossings nationwide. Young dairy farmer Hamish Robinson has carried out a range of projects over the last year to upgrade existing crossings or implement new drainage solutions on the Wyndham farm that he co-owns with his family. “For me it’s about making sure there is easy access to the paddocks for our stock and for all the farm machinery and equipment.” “With one of the pipes I put in there was already a bridge in WHAT: WHERE: PROJECT: WHEN:

“Plastic pipe was definitely the way to go for us. Its relative lightweight makes for much easier transportation and installation around the farm and that makes our work faster and simpler.”
Quality, dependable drainage systems are essential on the farm. EUROFLO® is a tough, multi-arched HDPE pipe, made in Europe and fit for purpose in New Zealand. In sizes from 160mm to 2150mm, we have the culvert pipe for you. EUROFLO® – Ask for it by name. BENEFITS • Easy to handle

• Maintenance and rust free
“We’re making it easier to move stock around the farm, keeping our paddocks drier and protecting our waterways at the same time.”
• Resists chemically aggressive soil conditions
Hamish says a lot of work has gone into recent projects which have included tidying up water courses, resolving overflows and improving drainage on the farm.

Zealand. It does not always have to be about manuka. There are so many other delicious types of honey that need more of our attention — in fact, our tasting includes rewarewa, pohutukawa kamahi beechwood and kanuka. “Thanks to Peter McNab, president of Rodney Bee Club, and Wilf Berger, our apiary officer, I became a founding member and present secretary of Warkworth Beekeepers Society. Working hands-on with an experienced beekeeper builds confidence and is fundamental when you are a beginner. We meet once a month at Warkworth Primary School.” Grass says depending on the strength of a hive it can house between 10,000 to 80,000 bees in spring and summer. During autumn the numbers reduce and in winter they can drop back to 10,000. “A strong hive depends on a good queen and good hive management. In New Zealand, we have the active and lively Carniolan black honey bee and the Italian strain, which is an amber colour and more docile to work with. All bees are hard-working, but in winter depending on external temperatures and weather conditions they start work later in the day when it is warmer. They forage for floral resources such as gorse, which is extremely high in pollen. “The foragers explore continuously looking for nectar and pollen and often die of exhaustion. Nectar is released from flowers when it is above 20 degrees, but this year winter was mild, so the nectar has flowed, and we are
getting honey. The foragers cast their bounty back to the nurse bees who store it and feed the growing larvae and brood — thus the cycle continues. The queen bee’s scent determines social behaviour, maintenance of the hive, swarming, mating behaviour, inhibition of ovary development in worker bees, communication, orientation and defence and much more. The drones are male bees, and their primary function is to mate with virgin queens of other hives, they are only found in hives in spring and summer and do not have a stinger. The worker bees are females that lack reproductive capacity and have many roles within the hive — cleaning, making wax, nursery duties, water gatherers, pollen and nectar foragers and guarding the hive. “Beetopia has held numerous beginner beekeeping courses at our educational centre and training apiary where lessons are hands-on inside a hive. “My four-year-old grandson is my youngest beekeeper, and a 75-yearold was the eldest I have taught. I do not let people invest in a hive before they feel confident working with and understanding bees and realising it is like having another family member on board. “It is definitely the best hobby I have ever had and people everywhere can have bees. It is exciting when you finally reach your utopia, and my utopia is bees.”
Grass is a founding member and present secretary of Warkworth Beekeepers Society and believes hands-on learning is important

We didn’t sign up for this by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland
It won’t come as any surprise to you that in the last election I didn’t vote for any constituent party or individual now in the current coalition government. In that regard, at least, I was in the majority. I could take some grim satisfaction in that, given how things have turned out. However, I don’t. I don’t think any of us, whether we voted for this government or not, can be happy or have any satisfaction, grim or otherwise, with the performance of this government since it took office. At the very least, we had a right to expect a level of competence. We didn’t get it. The appalling mishandling of the Kiwibuild fiasco, the outrageous and far from transparent mismanagement of the meningococcal outbreak here in the north, the increasing levels of unemployment and decreasing levels of business confidence all point to a government lacking basic management skills, let alone the vision and the skills necessary to take us forward. Given their failure to deliver anything substantive in their ‘Year of Delivery’, it is almost as if they didn’t expect to get in and were totally unprepared when they did.
Deeply worrying too is that they seem to display an implicit acceptance of their lack of competence and have defaulted to the minor parties to set policies. That is not a good look. Moreover, why do I bring that up now? Well, two reasons. First, I have just returned from my party’s national conference and what an energised conference it was. It was full of vigour, confidence and optimism. Much of that is organic, but some of it was also that we see a government in disarray, and we are rising to a groundswell wanting us to step in (and up) and do something about it. The second reason I bring it up now is that ground-swell. I feel it all around me — that disquiet about this government’s mishandling of almost everything it handles. Even many who voted for them are now having misgivings. The question being increasingly asked is: Is this what we signed up for? Nope. Not even close.

ADVERTORIAL
Should I take coenzyme Q10? I recently wrote about coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). I was surprised at the amount of contact from readers on the subject of CoQ10, especially from those wanting help dealing with the side effects of cholesterol-lowering medication. Studies show that statins can reduce circulating CoQ10 by as much as 50%. The side effects are so common they are called ‘statin myopathy’. The main side effects are muscle and tendon weakness, which can be felt as muscle stiffness and pain. The effect on nerves can impact memory and mood and comment about general lethargy. In most cases, two months of a quality CoQ10 will reduce these side effects and allow people to get the benefits of the medication without side effects. The chemical structure of CoQ10 allows it to move high energy electrons within our cell mitochondria where energy is made. CoQ10 collects these electrons and transfers them to an enzyme called ATP synthase to make the energy we need. I prescribe CoQ10 for several reasons most commonly for statin support. I also add CoQ10 for those fatigued without medical causes and for those with cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurodegenerative problems. For example, I include
at least 100mg for those with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and higher doses for those with MS. For statins support, I use a high quality patented US CoQ10 and for inflammatory problems my mitochondrial support formula that includes high-grade Kaneka CoQ10 with a number of energy co-factors. It is interesting that the first improvement felt by those with these conditions is a lift in energy and general wellbeing. Those with inflammator y conditions, especially autoimmune problems, should be working to a personalised diet and supplement plan complementary to their regular medical treatment. Most people feel a real difference within three months. For more information give me a call or email. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. New Zealand’s top honey producers and innovators were honoured recently at Apiculture NZ’s annual conference in Rotorua. The conference is the industry’s biggest gathering, and the awards mark successes in innovation and scientific excellence in apiculture as well as naming New Zealand’s best honey producers. The Supreme Award in the ApiNZ National Honey Competition was claimed by Milburn Apiaries of South Otago. Their win was based on the combined scores of their top three honey entries in the competition. Class winners in this competition included: Taylor Pass Honey Co of Blenheim for the liquid or clear honey class and Kaimai Range Honey of Tauranga in the naturally granulated honey class. Milburn Apiaries won best in class for their creamed honey. Judges Maureen Conquer, Alessandro Tarentini and Claudine McCormick had the sweet task of tasting and rigorously examining all the entries. “The quality and quantity of the entries are increasing every year, which makes it an absolute pleasure to judge. New Zealand produces some of the finest honey in the world, and we have

unique regional varieties that need to be celebrated,” said Ms Conquer. Veritaxa and Analytica Laboratories won the Roy Paterson Trophy, which acknowledges the best innovative idea, invention or technology in beekeeping. Their Classifynder system uses robotics, image processing and neural network technology to count and classify microscopic objects like pollen grains. Pike Stahlmann-Brown of Landcare Research won the ApiNZ Peter Molan Award for Excellence in Apiculture Science, while the ApiNZ National Photography Competition was won by Gary Glasson of Glasson Apiary Ltd on the West Coast.
ApiNZ chief executive Karin Kos said the awards were a chance to celebrate both the high-quality products and leading work being done by those in the apiculture industry. “This is a hard-working industry committed to excellence. “This conference has been a fantastic opportunity for our industry to get together and talk about our challenges and successes, and plan for a strong future.” “We have world-class honey here in New Zealand, and it is wonderful to see these getting the recognition they deserve from internationallyrenowned judges.”

Bonza bonsai and top topiary
With the home show season well and truly upon us, it’s time to venture into the darkest backyard wilderness and visit that ‘lost temple’ of gardening aspirations, the tool shed. If like many Kiwis, the thought of facing the automated relics inside fills you with religious dread, it might be time to take a closer look at how things are progressing in the world of outdoor power equipment. How many of us proceed to persevere with mowers our grandfathers would have called antique, chainsaws that deliver nothing with their stroppy pull-starts except forearms like Popeye the Sailor, and hedge trimmers, which seem positively homicidal? Then we are treated to the confection of finely tuned foliage, which is the latest masterwork of the landscaper’s art. Lawns like the surface of Bill Gates’ billiard table, topiary and clipped hedges that are the arboreal equivalent of those coiffured poodle-dogs led along Ponsonby Road on diamond-encrusted strings. Zen rockeries that would make the average kung fu master weep with pure spiritual harmony. The pumice used in these creations used to dream of this kind of treatment when it was still 10 miles under a volcano. How does anyone find the time or energy to make their back yard (the place where kids,

Lighter, often silent and battery-operated, and sharper for longer. From ride-on lawnmowers so stable they literally come with cup holders to electric chainsaws, which slice branches like butter. It’s grown into an event to rival the mighty National Fieldays at Mystery Creek, though it’s more about cosmopolitan comfort than agricultural excellence. The Auckland Home Show proudly acclaims itself the nation’s premier event for all those seeking renovation and building inspiration, and this year all the stops have been pulled out for a five-day extravaganza of decor, design, technology and fresh ideas. With a similar timespan to its mammoth rural counterpart, the Home Show fills the large ASB Showgrounds site to the brim with more than 500 exhibitors covering every aspect of home improvement, from floorings to ceilings, decorating to design, indoors and outdoors. Clever ideas in energy efficiency sit alongside innovations for modern kitchens and tools for perfectly manicured gardens, while every conceivable convenience to heat, cool, secure, entertain and connect your living space is here to view. The Home Show heralds the start of spring and the season of completing those projects around the home before the lazy days of summer. As such, inspiration is the key theme. As well as numerous displays showcasing new trends, emerging technologies and leaps forward in design, there will be an ongoing series of seminars hosted
by industry experts, in which Home Show patrons can hear about top tips, tricks and techniques from those at the forefront of their respective industries. To put it all in perspective, exhibitors have also constructed a full-scale area called The Street, packed with homes built just for the occasion. The Street is a walk-through feature of the latest innovations in landscaping materials, construction and lightweight or portable buildings. It features ready-built homes with fully landscaped sections, complete with gardens and water features. There’s so much to see during the five days from September 4, and we would like to invite you to attend. Pick the right renovation by Andy Bryenton
There’s a fine line between a handyperson’s dream and a renovation nightmare if you’re committed to doing it yourself. It’s all about picking a home with the proverbial ‘good bones’, and knowing exactly what lies beneath before you make a budget. Here’s a list the experts use. 1. Check out the roof first. A complete reroof may be necessary for older homes, which have been neglected. It’s hard to scope out the top of the house at an open home, but a careful look is best practice, including popping up through the ‘manhole’ into the ceiling cavity to check for damp. A top tip — spiders hate the dry conditions in a wellsealed roof. Lots of webs and a clammy feeling may mean a leak. 2. What lies beneath. Just as important as the top end is the bottom end. Is water collecting under the house? How are the pilings? A repile is a major task,
so make sure the foundations are solid, especially in old villas and bungalows. It’s also possible to check the state of plumbing and insulation while underneath. There have been cases of showers draining to nowhere and pipes held up by plastic tape only discovered by a trip under the deck. 3. Joinery bears the brunt of storms, heat and rain, so check windowsills, window frames and doors for rotten timber, a snug fit and draughts. Sticking or leaning doors and windows might tell you that the whole wall is out of true in the worst case. Of course, it is possible to

Blue sky thinking The smart money on any upgrade to your home is on crunching the numbers, and in the case of photovoltaic solar, those numbers have been hotly debated. Here in New Zealand, the final verdict is that solar power is cost-effective, so long as 100 per cent of PV power is used on-site, and none is pumped back into the grid. That’s good news for those who want to sever ties with the wires and embrace rural views — like many of those building or renovating here in the Kaipara.
• Irrigation • Fertigation • Water Supply • Drainage • Water Treatment • Effluent and Wastewater Dispersal
Solar panels are proliferating across the country despite our government lagging behind other developed democracies in offering incentives and tax breaks for their implementation. At last count, the nation sported approximately 91 megawatts of solar power attached to homes and businesses, with 19Mw of that installed within the preceding year. The uptick has begun, and it’s being spurred on by large-scale projects such as the solar augmentation of Kaitaia College this year, where 368 panels now adorn the roofline. Kaitaia maybe a little further north, but Kaipara with its wealth of sunshine hours to match
We made it first. We make it last.
Nelson and Marlborough is also a prime spot to ditch the grid and adopt solar energy solutions. Between PV outfits for the roof, solarpowered pumps to channel water to the tank, and the ability to mount solar panels to boats and campers, there are ample opportunities to turn the sun’s rays into real savings. Consider that a single panel averages at about $350 and that the turn-key price for a full three to four-kilowatt system has dropped by two thirds in the past decade. Entertainment beyond television by Andy Bryenton
It’s been a while now since the glory days of the big, wooden-boxed CRT television, dominating a corner of the living room with its fishbowl screen. Even the palatial three-telly set-up of Elvis in Graceland looks positively prehistoric, compared to the latest options on display. Part of this is because we are living in a post-television world. Ask most millennial kids when a particular programme is on air, and they will look at you like you have asked them to swap their iPhone for a rotary dial landline. Television is less and less something beamed into an aerial with shows at rigid time slots, and more a pick and mix of broadband-streamed content, selected whenever we like.

That means the modern entertainment system is likely to centre around a smart TV, or even more likely a console or PC. The systems, which once only provided games now connect to Netflix, streaming conventional television channels and the internet, delivering services like YouTube. Most pack in a Blu-ray player as standard. A hefty hard drive connected directly to a big 4K capable screen means stored content can be watched as well. The key here is to select a machine capable of very high-resolution output to match a very high-resolution screen. A crisp picture is only achieved with good data coming in as well as the ability to display it. Very large rooms may still benefit from a projector and screen, but with 65-inch flatscreens now the norm — it’s a matter of wall space!

Then there’s the issue of sound. There are two ways to go here, and the modern soundbar is the easiest. Using clever speaker technology (some even have moving speakers inside the bar) these devices bounce audio from the walls and ceiling to create a surround effect. The smartest learn the contours of your room and react accordingly. The other option is more time-intensive but very immersive; run cables through the
ceiling to a battery of surround speakers for the cinematic experience. Finally, get the right chairs. If you sat through Avengers: Endgame in a cinema seat you’ll know the importance of comfort. Invest in some top recliners to make the home theatre a cut above the multiplex. Then you’re all set for this year’s Rugby World Cup. Moreover, as you’ll tell the rest of the family, ready for kid’s movies, panel shows and the nightly news.

The flagship Dargaville Wearable Arts creative event is set to expand its horizons with the promise of a creative and action-packed weekend featuring a sponsored golf and bowls tournament starting Friday, September 13. Dargaville Wearable Arts will have its first show on the Friday night with a matinee on Saturday afternoon and the grand finale in the evening. “It’s a way of cementing it as a permanent feature in the Northland calendar. We started with two shows in 2017 and added a matinee last year — which proved to be immensely popular for family groups and out of town travellers,” says producer John Pickford. Tickets are now on sale at wearablearts. nz and dargavillearts.co.nz. Dargaville Wearable Arts has also provided trophies for the weekend’s golfing and bowls tournament, with bowls on Friday starting at 9am promising to be a fun event with mixed triples (bowlers and non-bowlers) and entry is just $10. For the associated golfing event a tournament will be held on September 13 at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club at Baylys Beach. There is an individual men’s and women’s division, Stapleford competition and the event is open to non-handicap golfers.

Every year, quad bikes are a major cause of death, and serious injury on farms with many incidents associated with accidental rollovers and Worksafe is recommending the use of Crush Protection Devices along with ACC.
“The latest events are intended to become annual fixtures, and it’s all about giving people a great weekend in the north and making Dargaville a top destination,” said John. “We hope to see people doing more than one event. For anyone living out of town, they could come to the Wearable Arts matinee and be back home in time for a movie. Over the whole weekend, make Dargaville a holiday destination, be it motelling, B and B, or a motor home or caravan park. Make it destination Dargaville and find a warm welcome.”
On average each year, five people die, and there are more than 1,000 claims for work-related quad bikes accidents, costing $12 million. ACC is now offering a subsidy to help rural businesses buy Crush Protection Devices to help have a healthier and safer workplace. The subsidy offer is $180 for each CPD with a maximum of two CPD purchases each business, including self-employed. ACC has a primary focus on ensuring farmers use the right vehicle for the job and have the competency to use that vehicle safely. CPDs are a useful tool to minimise the risk of serious injury if someone is riding a quad bike and is involved in a rollover accident. They can help reduce the risk of injury or death to you or your staff and can be fitted to a quad bike to provide a survivable space should a rider be pinned underneath it. At present there are two CPDs currently on the market that WorkSafe recommends and are eligible for the subsidy, the LifeGuard and Quadbar.
Wearable Arts 2019 Dargaville
These have been well tested and are designed to withstand the forces of a quad rollover, to the extent that the operator has a greater probability of escaping serious harm from crushing, and can do so with limited effect on the operation of the vehicle itself. To apply for the workplace injury prevention subsidy, you must be selfemployed or own a small to medium business (0–99 employees) in the following sub-sectors: • Sheep and beef cattle farming (CU code 1230) • Sheep farming (CU code 1240) • Beef cattle farming (CU code 1250) • Dairy cattle farming (CU code 1300) • Livestock farming (not elsewhere classified) (CU code 1590) • Hunting and trapping (CU code 2200) ACC determines the sub-sector a business belongs to through their CU code used for levy invoicing purposes. MAIZE When the name says it all by Andy Bryenton
Car manufacturers, and to a lesser extent, their counterparts in the agricultural world, spend quite a lot of time coming up with the perfect names to market their products. Not so Krone, who, upon developing the most powerful maize and forage harvester the world has ever seen, took a look at its size and extreme capacity and called it the Big X.

The Big X range spans medium to super-sized harvesting machines, but the stand-out top of the range is the Big X 1180. It refers to the staggering amount of horsepower generated by its 12-cylinder Liebherr-derived common rail engine, making it the most powerful in the world right now. With this big size comes some definite economies of scale; for example, the service intervals for components such as the oil filter and valves have been extended. It’s not so much the sheer brute force of Krone’s massive maize and forage machine, which makes it pack such a punch. It’s the clever additions driven by that V12 powerplant. Acknowledging the emerging use of forage crops for biogas, Krone has made it possible to select variable chopping lengths from 4mm to 30mm, without having to touch the chopping drum. For livestock feed applications, where the chop is longer than in biofuel

sourcing, Krone’s VariLOC technology does the business, augmented by an efficient corn conditioner. The Big X 1180 uses massive 305mm rollers, with slanted teeth to ensure that every kernel is cracked for greater digestibility. These hefty rollers are carried by an equally hefty spring assembly, and, of course, all powered by that giant Liebherr 12. Precision continues into the cab, with a suite of electronic aids to help fill trailers more accurately and at greater speed. The operator has more control over the output stream than ever before,
and additional data at hand includes the option to review the crop nutrient and moisture levels. The Big X even has eyes of its own; a photo-optical sensor in the middle of the maize header measures the maturity of the plant and automatically adjusts the length of cut. Between these and a range of other features designed to maximise fuel economy and minimise operator stress and fatigue, the Big X 1180 isn’t just powerful in terms of horsepower. It’s a powerful tool for making the most of a hard-earned crop, from the field to storage and use.

The grain of civilisation
Maize is a huge part of the agricultural world a vital source of feed-out protein across our dairy and beef herds. It’s also a staple for the production of modern biofuels, with large areas of land in some nations now devoted to growing the crop just for the provision of liquid energy. Maize had been shaping human society for centuries before the advent of biodiesel and the modern farm. The plant itself, as traded for by European settlers in the New World, was not even a ‘natural’ cultivar, but a carefully bred version of the ancient wild plant teosinte. This plant may have been domesticated up to 6,000 years ago, according to evidence found in the Guila Naquitz Cave in Oaxaca, Mexico. Maize was the cornerstone of empires, as it was able to be harvested, stored and transported. Hun Hunahpu was the Mayan god of maize, and not surprisingly this deity was high up the celestial pecking order. Maize benefits from further selective breeding today. A worldwide programme seeks to produce drought-resistant strains to help feed African nations, for example. Other initiatives include creating stains which resist insect pests and deliver superior yield. Key players in this process are the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, modern-day
‘disciples of Hun Hunahpu’ who invest heavily into studying the genetics, propagation and improvement of maize worldwide. With global maize production in 2018 topping 1,100 million tonnes, across applications from directly feeding human populations through to biofuel production, this is perhaps one of the most vital crops in soil, cultivated from the plains of the American midwest to the steppes of Ukraine and beyond. While New Zealand’s maize crop primarily goes to providing effective fodder for livestock, there are applications being developed which include maize-based replacements for plastics, maize-based ‘pellets’ to replace wood in heating furnaces, and even the use of the watery byproducts of maize milling to cultivate germs in the laboratory for medical science. In these many ways, the plant, which helped create the empires of Central and South America, and has had such an impact on our ability to feed a population in the billions, continues to shape civilisation today.

Know and defeat maize pests
by Andy Bryenton
Maize is part of a family of plants, which are vitally important to human life. Ryes, corns and their relatives make up the staple diet of literally billions of people, and we have selectively bred strains of all of them during the years to be resistant to climate issues, disease and pests. However, evolution has suited several species to prey directly on maize. Knowing them is the first step toward eradicating them, hence a programme by AgResearch online Agpest.co.nz. This website not only lists the common insect and invertebrate predators that afflict maize crops but also has a handy identifier to pinpoint any invasive species found on Kiwi farms, along with info on how to stop it dead. From sap-sucking stink bugs to armyworms, cutworms, which fell new-
grown maize stalks like trees and black beetles whose larvae attack roots, there are many predators that can strike maize. Likewise, there are many weeds that would love to take over freshly tilled and aerated land, usurping the valuable crop. By being able to quickly determine exactly which of these enemies is on the attack, disasters can be averted. Additionally, this database and identification tool provides a line of defence against new or foreign invasive
ker HooContracting species. Some of the worst predators on maize have come from overseas, and are now unfortunately well established. If a vigilant farmer were to identify an insect or weed not listed as common, it would be possible to quickly isolate and destroy it, hopefully before it spread

further. As biotechnology, breeding programmes and pest control methods develop, there is a better chance than ever of nipping an infestation in the bud. Early detection remains the best strategy, however, to ensure a healthy crop.

Forestry changes under ETS
Free carbon credits to New Zealand’s trade-exposed heavy emitters are being phased out and forests registered in the Emissions Trading Scheme before 2019 will be barred from the new averaging accounting system. “The allocation of free credits, worth up to 90 per cent of some industries’ carbon liabilities, will start in 2021,” says climate minister James Shaw. “It will continue at one per cent a year to 2030, two per cent a year from 2030 to 2041, and then move to reductions of three per cent a year. The free-credit system was designed to shield emissions-intensive trade-exposed industries like steel and aluminium-making and pulp manufacturing from the full impacts of the ETS until other countries adopted carbon pricing.” Mr Shaw says he does not expect the slow phasing out of the subsidy to affect businesses. “Officials have shown that the phasedown does not pose a financial risk to ETS businesses as the ETS accounts for only a small part of a firm’s operating costs, and any additional cost to large polluting businesses will be manageable and will encourage businesses to invest in clean energy alternatives that reduce emissions. “The government is aware that our industries face international influences, which is why the independent Climate Change Commission will review phasedown rates and advise governments on appropriate allocations if technology, economics or the global situation changes.”

The government has also announced more details on changes to the forestry sector under the ETS, including banning existing forests from the new averaging system, announced earlier this year. “Averaging is primarily intended to encourage new forests because they make the biggest contribution to reducing our carbon footprint,” said
forestry minister Shane Jones. “It is also about managing the volume of carbon units entering the market to maintain a stable price to drive emissions reductions.” The decision will be reviewed by the yet-to-be-established Climate Change Commission in 2021.

Advancements for Ahuwhenua The new Ahuwhenua Trophy competition for horticulture was launched at the HortNZ Conference with the Ministry for Primary Industries offering funds to supply native seedlings. Ahuwhenua Trophy chairman Kingi Smiler says it is great to have the support of Horticulture New Zealand and the various sector groups who are sponsoring and supporting the competition. “It was logical and timely to have a separate event to recognise the Maori contribution to horticulture. For more than two centuries, Maori have exported horticultural products — a fact not widely recognised in New Zealand,” he says. “In the last 10 years, in particular, Maori have become major investors in the sector, and this has resulted in good financial returns and jobs for our people. There is still much more to be done, and I am sure with the positive publicity that the Ahuwhenua Trophy competition generates, this will encourage more Maori to become involved in the sector. “It is time to celebrate the achievements of Maori working in the horticultural sector. The competition has the mana and prestige, which no other event in Aotearoa has and the prospect of winning this beautiful cup will surely be an incentive. I urge Maori leaders and rural professionals to proactively encourage Maori to enter this competition. For the finalists, there is not only the prestige of winning the

Past finalists have noted how valuable this is.” He says that the Ministry for Primary Industries has announced that it will become a joint Platinum sponsor with Te Puni Kokiri. “This generous sponsorship will ensure the financial viability of the competition and enable it to maintain the high professional standards that have characterised Ahuwhenua in recent years. In addition to this, MPI is also
offering a $30k prize to provide native seedlings to the winner and finalists. These are being donated by Te Uru Rakau – Forestry NZ and produced by Minginui Nursery. “This has added a new and appropriate dimension to the competition and one that will greatly be valued by all.” Entry Forms and further details about 2020 competition will be on the Ahuwhenua Trophy website in the next few weeks. Forestry is the key to getting New Zealand to carbon neutral. Though trees alone can’t achieve carbon neutrality for New Zealand permanently, our forests’ ability to absorb carbon is crucial for reaching 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas reduction goals. That’s why there are incentives to plant trees, paid for by carbon emitters. That in turn is why so many New Zealand landowners are planting forests. Forests and farms are both crucial for New Zealand. Nearly a third of our log harvest is on farms. Let’s work together. We can continue to feed and house both us and our international customers, and fight climate change at the same time.

High tech is the way ahead Forestry and technology are more and more going hand-in-hand, and this year the combination will be in sharp focus at the annual ForestTECH technology series that’s run in both Australia and New Zealand. At recent events, new data collection technologies have been unveiled along with advances that have been made in processing and better interpreting the big data streams now routinely being collected out in the field. The task being grappled with by many forestry companies has been how best to sort through and use this collected data and convert it into something usable for all stakeholders. The focus is ‘unlocking the true value of data’. Disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning, robotics, automation, daily satellite imagery, UAVs and the use of virtual and augmented reality are now increasingly being integrated into day to day operations of most forestry companies. The ForestTECH 2019 programmes are now complete and online. The series this year runs in Melbourne on November 13–14 and then again in Rotorua, on November 19–20. A number of pre and post-conference workshops have been set up for delegates in both countries with details available on foresttech.events.
The workshops deal with using geospatial tools and workflows, new technologies for collecting high-quality 3D forestry spatial data using portable, handheld devices and so on. The number of presentations being given from major forestry companies and global technology providers from outside Australasia includes professionals from the USA, Germany, South Africa, Chile and Spain. Registrations are now open. Every year, more than 250 resource managers, remote sensing, GIS and mapping specialists, inventory foresters and technology providers meet up at the technology series. “Compared to other parts of the wood supply chain, it has been the sheer pace of change around the collection, analysis and reporting of data collected for the forest estate
that has continued to drive interest and support for this particular technology series,” says Forestry Industry Engineering Association event director Brent Apthorp. “In recent years there has been a very short lag time, often less than six months, between the time research results are being relayed to forestry companies to the time that it is being implemented operationally.”

BACK or NECK PAIN? Real Hope For Long Term Sufferers
After twelve years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now established a long term track record with thousands of people throughout New Zealand. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from degenerated discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. To him surgery was never an option as long as he still could walk, there was hope. “While on an overseas trip I discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups for the first time, when I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and I was pain free for about 30 minutes. I never would have believed it would fix me completely as specialists had told me it was irreversible, but I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some welcome relief. To my surprise the more I used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months the pain was completely gone, after spending large amounts of money on everything I could find I finally had found something that worked and it was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.
Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz
Once I was sure it really worked I decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand to help spread awareness of the one thing that truly helped me. Over the years I have helped tens of thousands of people in New Zealand get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.
Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexibility
The results from what inversion does is nothing short of miraculous in areas we never thought possible, I believe there is a place for these in every single home regardless of if you have back issues or not. We have introduced them into a number of schools which are using them for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. I would not have believed the results had I not tried it for myself, and I would still be suffering to this day. This is why we travel the country showing people and letting them see for themselves how great it is and how life can be once you’re pain free again.”

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs:
It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life
Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when
muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

Our Back Pain Expos We host a number of back pain expos throughout the country almost every weekend, these expos are a way for people to try out a Teeter Inversion Table and feel the beniefits for themselves in a way that is instructive and informative. It is also a great way for people who already own an Inversion Table to come along and get a refreshment course on the use and operation of their Table and clear any questions they have about it. Sessions run continuously from 10am to 4pm and there are no bookings required, just come along at a time that suits you. There may be a wait during certain times and in these instances chairs are set out for anyone waiting for a turn, or anyone who just wants to ask us a few questions. We strive to cover the entire country and always try to book the most accessible venues we can. Youth scholarships presented Silver Fern Farms has presented six young people from around New Zealand with Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships as recognition for their ideas to further the sustainability of the red meat sector. “This year’s applicants were asked to explore the issues of sustainability in the red meat sector and present their solutions for farms, processing and inmarket,” says Silver Fern Farms chief executive Simon Limmer. “It is clear that there is a real belief from these young people in the future for our natural grass-fed red meat. We want to thank all of the applicants who put forward their ideas. It has been great to hear the innovative ideas and passion from young people who have their sights set firmly on creating a sustainable future for the red meat sector. “Through our scholarship programme, we are creating pathways for young people to have a rewarding career in our industry. Over three years, Silver Fern Farms has invested $90,000, supporting 18 young people. We believe this is working, one of the inaugural scholarship recipients is now on the Silver Fern Farms Graduate programme.” The Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarship 2019 recipients are Upper North Island — William Robertson. Record with NAIT If you are selling calves this winter, make sure you register them in the NAIT online system says dairy farmer Nigel Johnston.

It is a legal requirement for calves to be tagged and registered in NAIT within 180 days or before their first movement off-farm. “Remember too, if you are rearing calves, any future movements they make off-farm must be recorded in NAIT and confirmed by the farmer at the other end. It builds animal traceability and supports disease management,” says Nigel. Saleyards can record sending and receiving movements on behalf of farmers, but calves must be tagged and registered before they go off-farm. Farmers buying calves should request an animal status declaration form (ASD) from the seller. That provides the calves’ health status and confirmation of where the animal originated from. If you use an information provider such as LIC (MINDA), CRV Ambreed or Farm IQ to register your tagged calves, you must ensure the registration has synchronised through to your NAIT account — before the animals move off-farm. OSPRI advises farmers to get in contact with their information provider to check they are meeting their NAIT obligations. If you use MINDA or Farm IQ software check your NAIT

account regularly to ensure animals have been registered and movements recorded. The management and movement of calves are especially important with an estimated 1.5 million calves reared annually in New Zealand. Not tagging and registering calves in NAIT affects the accuracy of the system and undermines lifetime animal traceability — a fundamental aspect of
NAIT. It is also an offence, and you could be fined, or prosecuted if caught. Nigel says dairy farmers and lifestylers can help improve tag retention by ensuring they are correctly tagging newborns. “Tag your calves to the right ear, the inner centre, between the two veins for better retention.” For more information go to ospri. co.nz/tagandregisteryouranimals.

GRANT ENGINEERING
Science is the driving force behind better farming practices, and a hard-earned set of skills in the application of science to nutrient management on farms is helping one local professional affect positive change in the world of Northland agriculture. Originally from Northland and now living back in Kerikeri, Angela Churchill is passionate about our agricultural industry. Her first role in the fertiliser industry was in 2005 with Summit Quinphos Fertilisers, where for the following six years she developed and recommended nutrient management and use programmes, which have delivered improved profitability and sustainability for her farmer clients. In 2011 she took a role with LIC that focussed on improving the quality and efficiency of the New Zealand dairy herd. Angela graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree (with a major in agriculture) and has also completed both the Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture and the Advanced Sustainable Nutrient Management courses through Massey University.
Armed with this knowledge and the experience gained from time literally ‘in the field’, she has a genuine interest in improving pasture growth, animal health and production through the use of nutrients that are tailored to each individual farm. Angela enjoys working with farmers to achieve their individual farming goals and invites those in her constituency to get in contact to put her knowledge and experience to work on their farms.

Building on their reputation

There’s been a very favourable impression formed of the LDV brand here in New Zealand in recent years, with their no-nonsense, hard-working cargo vans becoming popular for those trades, which require reliable mass transit. Then came the T60 ute, a serious contender for king of the low-price modern light commercials. Now the line between work and play has been crossed.

LDV’s D90 sports utility is no crossover or mini version of the four-wheel-drive concept. It’s a full-sized, full-featured machine with seating for the entire family, up to seven people. They’ll be safe, too as the new LDV comes with a five-star ANCAP rating after passing a battery of intensive tests. It’s also available with real four-wheel drive, including automatically locking differentials, in an era when many vehicles pretend to have dirt and gravel chops — but come up short when it’s time to deliver. The biggest surprise is that it’s not a thumping big diesel under the hood, but a 220 horsepower turbocharged petrol unit, developing 350Nm of torque to deliver a two-tonne towing capacity. That means no pesky road user charges, and plenty of ability to get the boat in the water at the same time, but a very different feel from benchmark SUVs like

the venerable Land Cruiser. Engine stopstart and clever ECU setting keep the fuel bill low, though there is a ‘sport’ mode, which will doubtless have plenty of appeal. In this category of 4x4, the equation is all about the cost to benefits analysis. How much vehicle do you get for your dollars? In the case of the D90, the answer is ‘plenty’, with touch screen infotainment,
Apple and Android support, hill descent control, acres of interior space and topping it all, a five-year warranty. You could literally buy two of these, one in each colour available (white or black), for the cost of some other seven-seaters out there. All while remembering that the D90’s stablemates are becoming a bit of a byword for reliable hard work, deep into the odometer band.

Oi! DON’T TXT & DRIVE
Setting a new benchmark by Andy Bryenton
When Can-Am told us that their 2019 Outlander ATV would be more capable, more powerful and more precise than ever, we knew they had a tall order to fill. Then again, the modern era of automotive design has given us some surprises in this department, with new models surpassing their forebears in ways, which we could not have predicted. Indeed, the upgraded 2019 iteration of Can-Am’s popular farming quad looks the part. Fresh angles and a robust, ready-for-anything attitude dominate the design aesthetic, but then again, these machines have always looked sharp. It’s what’s under the skin that really counts. With the 2019 reimagining of the Outlander formula, there have been some significant upgrades. The first of these is power, which is now available from a single overhead cam liquid cooled v-twin. With eight valves (the magic number of four for each piston) and plenty of low down torque, you’ll see 48 horsepower from this mill, and feel it, too, thanks to progressively and automatically locking differentials to ensure less slip and more grip when things get muddy. The best is saved for the steering and suspension, however. With true independent rear suspension allowing the back wheels to travel directly up and down with no diagonal ‘butterfly’ effect, the back end seems planted like that of a rally truck. The front has also been tuned up, with improved divecontrol geometry and a hefty amount of
suspension travel, combining to make tight cornering far less stressful. What’s even better, perhaps, is the icing on the cake. All these improvements add up, making a better all-rounder than the outgoing Outlander;
but the cost has not gone up. For some models, it’s now more accessible than ever. That’s the power of massive manufacturing and a testament to the popularity of the Outlander brand worldwide.

SMOKE ALARMS
Save Lives
BE FIRE SAFE THIS WINTER
by Andy Bryenton
Ford’s Everfest seven-seater remains the complete package when it comes to a big family sports utility. It’s not kidding when it comes to off-road ability, towing power or interior comforts, but at the same time, there’s a no-nonsense appeal to the big Ford in this era of luxury-badged ‘poser’ SUVs, which sometimes deliver less than the benchmark. The big announcement for the 2019 upgrade to the Everest is a brand new engine option, which will excite those who follow Ford’s other developments. The Ranger Raptor’s two-litre biturbo engine comes home to roost under the hood of the Everest, coupled to a ten-speed transmission. Some purists will still adhere to the old ‘no replacement for displacement’ adage and cleave to the original 3.2 litre turbo diesel, but those who have experienced the Raptor’s peppy response, (or know about the wizardry Ford’s backroom techs can work with small displacement) will be keen to test drive the new configuration. It’s still a handsome beast as well, especially in premium titanium trim level, with a slight stylistic edge over other SUVs in its class. We hesitate to call this section ‘ute-derived’ because in reality there are very few panel similarities, but the Everest does go head to head with Holden’s Trailblazer
and the Isuzu MU-X, a clutch of highriding, all-terrain family haulers. Everest gets the edge with an interior following the winning Ranger formula, but with the option of a massive panoramic roof and that holy grail of seven-seaters, decent access and headroom for the back row. Developed by Ford Australia on some tough proving grounds indeed,
the Everest retains that defining quality that also makes its Ranger stablemate a winner. Despite its size and power, it’s quiet and even-tempered, smooth-riding and confidence-inspiring. While it commands a premium price, it does real-life better than many ‘deluxe badge’ SUVs, which offer more pose and less punch.
