Abatement notices have been issued to more than 40 Northland marine farmers for failing to lodge bonds designed to spare ratepayers the cost of cleaning up abandoned oyster farms. The Northland Regional Council consents manager, Colin Dall, confirmed the notices have been sent out to 43 farmers involved, operating from Parengarenga Harbour in the north to the Kaipara Harbour in the south.

Shannon Toia

Under the terms of their resource consents — which were reviewed in 2009 and 2010 — the oyster farmers are required to lodge a bond of $9,000 for each hectare of developed farm.

However, by obtaining a bank guaranteed bond, the average oyster farmer with about four hectares of farm structures would need to pay as little as $360 annually — roughly $90 per farmed hectare. The bonds are designed to help cover the costs of attempting to clean up farms if they are abandoned by their owners or left in a derelict state, but oyster farmers have repeatedly cited tough financial times. Mr Dall says the NRC has now extended the deadline for bond lodgement three times over several years. “The last two extensions were given to allow the New Zealand Oyster Industry Association time to develop a dedicated industry clean-up fund as its proposed alternative to a bond for each consent.”

Councillors agreed to a ‘final’ deadline of June 30 for an acceptable industry-arranged alternative to be implemented, but that deadline had now passed with no resolution in sight. The abatement notices that have now been issued give oyster farmers another three months to lodge the required bonds — or an acceptable alternative — or face further enforcement action, including daily fines of up to $750. Mr Dall says while councillors have some sympathy for the oyster farmers’ position and were reluctant to take formal enforcement action, they had a wider duty to all Northlanders to ensure commercial operators using public space in coastal areas left it in an environmentally acceptable state.

Drought relief continuing

NORTHERN FaRmiNg LiFEsTyLEs August 2013

The 2013 drought was one of the most extreme on record for New Zealand and the worst since 1945-46, according to a report released by the Ministry for Primary Industries. The adverse event declaration of the drought will remain in place until 30 September which will allow rural communities to get through winter and into early spring. Declaration of an adverse event means that the government provides extra funding through rural support trusts and that some people experiencing hardship may also be eligible for income support through rural assistance payments. Some tax measures can also be accessed through Inland Revenue. The report said the big dry was one of the most widespread New Zealand has experienced with only the drought of 1972-73 that affected Wairarapa, Tasman, Otago and Southland coming close to its geographical spread. It adds that the cause of the drought was not El Niño but in fact slow-

moving or ‘blocking’ high pressure systems over the Tasman Sea and New Zealand over summer.

The areas most affected by the 2012-13 drought were southern Nor thland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Central North Island, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, and parts of the north and west of the South Island. MPI resource policy manager, North Island regions, Stuart Anderson says the report provides a solid picture of the drought’s extent and severity. “Anecdotally we were told the drought was the worst some farmers had experienced but it is important to have this analysis to understand how dry

Ex truck-driver turned

bird guru

by Rose Rees-Owen

After a trucking accident over a decade ago, Robert Webb and his wife Robyn, set up the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre. Now the centre rescues, rehabilitates and releases over 1,200 birds each year. While on the road Robert kept an eye out for injured birds and often pulled over, nursed them back to health, and released them back into the wild where he found them when he could. “I’ve always had a fascination with wild birds, not so much domestic birds, and it gives me great pleasure to release them back into the wild,” says Robert. The accident meant Robert could no longer be a truck driver so he pursued his passion of taking care of injured birds and the centre is one of the few

places in New Zealand that has a permit to keep native birds in captivity. This means vets from around the country call on Robert for help when presented with an injured native bird and he has organised with Fastway Couriers to have birds delivered from veterinary clinics to the centre for free. Robert says he receives many calls from farmers concerned about the well being of birds on their property. Topics include harrier hawks drowning in animal water troughs, unable to fly

Two baby penguins who were brought to the Native Bird Recovery Centre

due to soaked and heavy wings. He says a simple solution is to put a ledge in the toughs so hawks don’t go under when drinking.

Robert Webb holds two baby kiwi birds

“In the early days it was thought that if a bird was injured you should leave it to it’s own devices.” Robert rejected this theory and finally received a permit after DOC sent a native wood pigeon to the centre and Robert refused care unless the permit was granted. “In fairness, I see where DOC was coming from. They had to make sure I knew what I was doing.” From then on, Robert has formed a close relationship with both DOC and Iwi working with them to save as many birds as possible. The centre saves around 60% of the birds brought in and the ones that don’t make it are returned to the Iwi where they were found. Robert keeps some injured birds who can’t return to the wild as pets. His pet kiwi, Sparky, lost his leg in a gin trap and was brought to the centre in 2002. “I believe birds shouldn’t be kept in captivity unless there’s something wrong with them.” Sparky has become an ambassador for kiwis and Robert visits primary schools giving children a chance to get up close and personal with our national icon. Robert and Robyn also run education programmes at the centre with around 6,000 school children visiting each year. “With Sparky only having one leg, it leads to questions about why this happened and what can be done to prevent it from happening in the future.” A talking tui with a wing injury called Woof Woof made the centre internationally famous. He became a YouTube star and his videos have received over 50,000 views. Robert recounts an incident where a German family couldn’t believe their ears. Woof Woof had picked up the phrases, “Merry Christmas,” and “where have you been?” enabling the tui to have a conversation. The family told Woof Woof all about their trip around the Bay of Islands. “They wish they had got evidence as no one back home would believe they had a conversation with a tui.”

Woof Woof died in 2011 but the tuis either side of his cage, Jett and Little Tui, continue the legacy and have picked up on many of Woof Woof’s phrases. The centre is equipped with an incubation unit and is able to perform surgery. Robert learnt all he knows by watching and observing the birds. “I’m just an ex truck driver,” laughs Robert, “you don’t have to go to university to learn all this — I’ve learnt as I go.” He says it’s hard to study wild birds because a permit is needed and as one of the few who have been able to observe wild birds he is called upon to speak at universities and education centres. Robert and Robyn have dedicated their lives to the centre and they haven’t been able to go on holiday for 16 years. The centre is funded by grants and donations. To donate: www.nbr.org.nz

Farm and forest synergy at Mot atau by Cynthia Matthews

Aaron and son Hikairo at bush camp built by Kevin Prime and local carpentry students

Motatau, south of Kawakawa, is the home of Ngati Te Tarawa, a subtribe of Ngati Hine. Kawiti deemed the land to his nephew following the Northern War in the 1840s.

he Prime family’s farm sits below Motatau Mountain with the Kaitoki stream running through it from the forest. Aaron Taikato married into the family and he and wife Luanne are providing a country life for their children based on Maori values and their ways of appreciating and working in with the land. “Culture is very strong here. We still speak to our elders in Maori,” says Aaron. The family marae, Waimahaehae, stands near the farm entrance. The main marae house, ‘Kukupa’ is an old school house that was moved on. The papakainga, ‘Erana’ is named after Luanne’s grandmother, who wanted children’s Christian holiday camps to be run from it. Today it’s emergency

accommodation while ‘Nga Kawa’, nearby is for use by whanau as needed. This continues the social minded tradition of Pera Paraima, (wife of Tepiri Prime) who is remembered for her role in the 1940s advancing Motatau families establishing at that time. A generator supplies power for marae and farm. In the 1900s there was dairying and scattered homes on the lower farmlands. “The only access was a mud track. The people would stay in here over winter,” Aaron explains. Today the farm runs dry stock on 300 acres of pasture. The Hereford Cross cattle go up into the bush

before being sent to the works. “They do well up there.” Aaron’s brother-in-law carries out the stock work while Kevin Prime, Luanne’s father, does some farm work and looks after the family’s forestry of 624 hectares. The farm also has its own mill. Just over 70 years ago its trees provided the timber for the Waitangi Te Whare Runanga. “Everything we do is decided at family meetings,” explains Aaron. He is a Pou Tai Rangahau — Strategic Iwi Relations and Partnership Manager, Department of Conservation. He and Luanne are pooling their skills in visitors’ guided treks. Other family initiatives are organised pig hunting trips, a motocross trail and growing Christmas trees. Apiaries are a possibility — the Convita Company has hives on the farm. “We’re considering an apprenticeship with them re our goals for local employment,” says Aaron. In the whanau’s approach to its farm forest operations everything is linked in — planting kahikatoa/manuka along farm waterways provides bee food as well as helping control erosion towards cleaner streams. The employment required supports the associated cultural strengthening of connection with land. And land provides food resources such as the whanau’s seasonal l a rg e organic garden and the farm’s kunekune. However, Aaron has put hinake in the creeks and caught few eels and even less fresh water crays. “We have a rahui in place to help them build up. “We’re looking into why the pasture waterways haven’t the purity of the upper streams and ways of addressing this.” The extensive Motatau Reserve in the

hills has never been milled. Ngati Hine paramount chief Moehau ensured its protection in the 1600s. This primar y forest attracts environmental students and scientists from all over the world while the guided treks — ‘Native Nature Tours’ — accommodate visitors wanting to access the rare ecosystem and discover more of an indigenous ecology. V isitor s have helped with kiwi monitoring and recently attended a kiwi release. The Reserve is managed by Ngati Hine in partnership with DOC. The Department has been trapping mustelids and a locally based ongoing eradication programme of rats and possums has led to increased numbers of kukupa and the beginning regeneration of some tree species.

to the township from artesian wells on his property. He has also put time into meeting and working with other district landowners towards the wheels turning for the new cycleway. “We want this to be the best trail in New Zealand,” says Snow. He attended an early meeting in Moerewa and heard about the Otago Cycle Trail and immediately saw the potential for the Mid North. Riding at the Cycleway’s Open Day, he met Minister Chris Tremain who reminded him of the possibilities for the district arising from the trail’s relative closeness to Auckland. Thanks to Snow’s grandfather, ‘Washie’( W L Washington Harrison), cyclists will travel through large tracts

making the first track for the cycleway along the river. He has put in access, built boulder foundations and rocked areas where there have been slips above the track. The farm’s rocks, shale from the quarry and the river gravel have all proved useful. Three and a half kilometres of new fencing with gates are in with cattlestops awaiting instalment. There is a natural pond near the track that the Harrisons have fenced and Robyn is planting up. The Far North District Council has already planted the river bank to help hold recent construction work. Snow and neighbouring farmer Neville Lewis have been liaising with the Council and Regional Council to gain cyclist

of natives. While Washie cleared land for grazing he also left plenty of bush and 400 acres remain. The valley’s Okaihau volcanic loam can grow tree giants. “If it grows tairaire and puriri it’s very strong country,” Snow explains. It also grows good grass. Washie milked Shorthorns off it and Snow raises Shorthorn Cross breeding cows and beef Shorthorns on the 600 acres of pasture. Snow and wife Robyn are pleased that the new cycleway gives them the means to fence off bush from stock. “We’ve wanted to do it for several years, and with the possum trapping there’s land reverting to natives,” says Snow. The bush includes rata and rimu and the kanuka groves have trees amongst the tallest in Northland. Along with his winter farm jobs, Snow and the digger have had plenty of work

friendly gradients on local terrain. Two young ‘Okaihau-ites’ — Scott Flood and Neville’s son Matt — are manning the digger and truck along with Brian Lewis on bulldozer. The new cycleway has the hallmarks of significant local effort. Across on the northern side of the valley, closer to Okaihau, there is a view of the valley and the infant cycleway wending into the bush. “The springs in this hillside never run dry,” says Snow. “Robyn and I might retire here.” He has a deep appreciation of his home, particularly after tough times farming in the 1980s. Daughter Brya is due back from shearing in Australia and there’s the possibility of another generation farming in the valley. “It’ll be here long after us,” says Snow. “I’d like to think we’re doing something good here.”

The issue of foreign ownership and investment in New Zealand property has been debated many times in New Zealand politics. It is good to see that the Labour Party is endorsing Farmers of New Zealand foreign ownership of New Zealand land policy. Foreign ownership is acceptable if a residential qualification is met or the Minister of overseas investment determines that the purchase of land would provide substantial benefit of the nation. Such decisions must be made public. But Labour’s policy of targeting Asians as being the main culprit in stopping first home buyers in New Zealand buying property is a debatable point. We have all endorsed the free market policy. We seek the removal of trade tariffs in countries that we deal with. We have entered into free trade agreements with China and other countries and Fonterra our biggest agriculture cooperative in New Zealand is making huge investments in China and other Asian countries, to meet the demands of the 3.8 billion people who live in the Asia basin.

This has included setting up farms to supply milk directly to these markets. Newton’s Law of every action creates a reaction, surely must apply. If we expect these nations to accept us, either purchasing or leasing land in their countries, surely New Zealand is obliged to reciprocate those same rights. Asian residents now have a major stake in New Zealand for over a hundred years. They are here. Have we forgotten one of Taranaki’s most visionary characters was a small Chinese man called Chew Chong helping to develop the region’s dairy industry, especially the making and refrigeration of butter, being responsible for making one of New Zealand’s most recognised food items, the pound of butter. He also initiated New Zealand’s world famous sharemilking industry, by employing sharemilkers.

Biological Fertilisers Save money & protect the environment

Soil Force / Soil Mag Phosphate & magnesium fertilisers that are readily available to the plants.

Many Asians over the years have acquired retail shops and have operated restaurants and food outlets and to their credit, have made a better job of it than some New Zealanders. Dame Whena Cooper, the Northland Maori matriarch advised Maori, if you want to dilute the influence of the pakeha, marry them. Maybe the same should apply to the Asians. Many successful New Zealand marriages have taken place with Asian spouses. Land is the basis of New Zealand’s wealth. It is a source of the country’s export earnings and will continue to be the principal earner of foreign exchange for many years. This precious resource must be carefully husbanded to maintain its productive capacity. Changing world market and economic conditions require a flexible approach to planning and land management, particularly when it comes to the urban sprawl. Auckland’s high house prices are much to do with the shortage of land being available for development. More land should be made available for housing development between Auckland and Warkworth. A lot of this land is marginal and suitable for residential development.

Land is the basis of “ New Zealand’s wealth” The government has clearly signalled that it is going to provide the finance necessary to develop the Northern motorway to Wellsford. This will also open up the southern Kaipara district to benefit from the Auckland sprawl. Many southern Kaipara people go to work in Auckland. New Zealand is a multi-cultural country, a land of immigrants, Dalmations, English, Poles, Dutch, South Africans, Pacific Islanders, Asians and others. Surely we need solutions for all New Zealand residents who must be treated fairly and equitably. Intellectual property rights and land are New Zealand’s two most valuable assets. It is always a great risk that New Zealand’s intellectual property rights can be purchased or lost to overseas interests and removed from the country, but they cannot take the land away from New Zealand.

KELCO ENGINEERING recently released a new pump controller addressing many of the problems pump users face.

to name but a few. Being programmable, the F60 can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of individual pumping systems.

The F60 programmable pump controller features functionality never before seen in a pump controller, replacing complicated and expensive control systems. This product is based on controllers Kelco has been supplying for pumping systems around the world for the last 20 years.

The functionality of the F60 gives an exceptionally effective pump control system, providing simplicity of installation, both physically and electrically. It is extremely weatherproof and manufactured to last.

The difference with the F60 is that it not only protects your pump from dry running, but has other innovative features such as anti-cycling protection, burst pipe and leak detection, delayed restarting (remote tank filling), and auto restart if run dry. It can be programmed for cyclic running and stopping, and can provide a constant pressure system,

With its digital display the F60 shows its operating mode and system pressure, and reports its alarm state if something goes wrong. The alarm output can operate an external device such as a visual or audible alarm, or phone dialler. F60, the ultimate pump controller in terms of flexibility and cost effectiveness for all pumping systems — large or small.

What about building consents? Building consents confirm that plans and specifications for proposed building work meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code, and ensure that any building work is safe, durable and does not endanger the health of property owners and users. It can only be issued in advance of any work taking place. You may also need a resource consent if your project has an impact on the environment. You can access details information from the websites of your local council. New rules came into effect in 2012 which apply to projects containing restricted building work critical to the integrity of a building by ensuring that it is structurally sound and weather-tight. Most building projects require a building consent before any work is started. The consent includes not only the building work but also any work related to site preparation, plumbing or drainage. If you do not obtain a building consent before starting work, it will cause problems later in the project and may also lead to anybody involved as property owners or tradespersons facing prosecution. You do not need to apply for a building consent if your project is covered by an exemption. However all building work undertaken must comply with the New Zealand Building Code Examples of exempt building works include decks less than 1.5 metres above ground level, a garden shed less than 10sq metres and at least its height from the boundary, fencing less than 2.5 metres high, car ports not exceeding 20sq metres and even playground equipment, used by a single household, that is less than three metres above the ground. For detailed information, consult your local or regional council.

There are other areas council can assist with including building warrants off fitness, fencing of swimming pools, dangerous and insanitary buildings, earthquake prone buildings, and undertaking enforcement action in connection with illegal building works.

It’s winter, and after the last couple of months, except for a few days of Indian summer, so much for the winterless North. products made from mineral fibres and suited to standard spacing of wall studs and attic or floor joists. Loose-fill insulation, often made from recycled material can be blown into spaces using special pneumatic equipment. The blown-in material conforms readily to odd-sized building cavities and attics with wires, ducts, and pipes, making it well suited for places where it is difficult to effectively install other types of insulation.

Rigid foam insulation is typically more expensive than rolls and batts or loosefill insulation, but it is very effective in exterior wall sheathing. Foam-in-place insulation, from any DIY store, can be blown into walls, or under floors to insulate and reduce air leakage. You can use small pressurized

cans of foam-in-place insulation to reduce air leakage in holes and cracks such as window and door frames, and electrical and plumbing fittings. The insulation you choose depends on how you will use it and on your budget. Consider factors such as your climate, home design, and budget when selecting insulation for your home. One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your roof spaces. You may also need to add under floor insulation to your crawl space and rigid foam products are widely available on the New Zealand market. You’ll save money and energy of course when you build a new home or addition if you install a combination of cavity insulation and ceiling and underfloor protection.

Powering up for the future

Computers, kitchen appliances, televisions in several rooms and a myriad other electrical items were things of the future when many Northland homes were built. As a result, there is a growing need in many older houses to upgrade the electrical wiring. This is one area when DIY is not an option. But there are steps you can take before the electrician — with his professional licence, moves in. Carry out an electrical inventory, creating a list of all the devices you’ll be using in the house, and where. Your electrical system needs to match your needs — figuring out where and how you’ll be using power makes it easier to draw up a plan for the job. Then check with the local council to see what permits and standards you

must comply with. Failing to get permits can result in having to pull out finished work, but your electrician should take care of the legal side for you. Decide whether you want to run just electrical, or data, fire, and security as well. Modern wiring doesn’t just carry electricity, and wireless systems are getting increasingly cheaper and more sophisticated. Once you’ve done your initial homework, sit down and create a list of what you want done and when you want it completed, but be flexible too — surprises invariably show up when you’re digging deep into an old house structure. And it’s probably a good idea to find an electrician who knows and understands older buildings because it can prove to be a complex, demanding, and difficult process. It’s also a good idea to include demolition and reconstruction as an integral part of the job. If dealing with the damage done by rewiring isn’t at or

near the top of your list, you’re asking for trouble. It is a good thought to make cleanup and restoration as important as the wiring itself and finally — you can keep the whole operation in character with your older home. Integrate switches

and plates into the historic look and feel of the house. There are fittings available on the market that reflect the appearance and the feel of almost any era, while providing modern standards of safety that will be streets ahead of you old fittings.

Painting professionals preferred Painting is probably the easiest tasks that you can undertake yourself, when it comes to renovating – ‘probably’ because it can also be fraught with problems for the unwary. Right up front, there are obvious questions to answer. What type of paint is best for the job? Different types of paint are available for those jobs, both interior and exterior. You need to know

which paint is best for different surfaces. What’s good for wood isn’t necessarily good for a plastered wall. You also need to know how to prepare the surface you are going to paint.

While the basic preparation process is the same in terms of stripping and cleaning surfaces, base coats and primers are made for specific purposes. If you use a product that is not compatible with the paint you have chosen for the top coat, it can mean money down the drain. So if you have studied up and feel you have the knowledge necessary, all well and good. But there are also good reasons to hire a professional painter. You don’t have to undertake tedious preparation and a professional will know exactly what products to use and help and advise on paint quality and colour ideas. Then a professional will already be geared up and will supply ladders, drop sheets, buckets, rollers, paint brushes, solvents and all the rest of the necessary kit. Tradesmen painters remove hardware like

handles and catches before they start work. It takes extra effort, but they are getting paid for this. And importantly, if the work isn’t done according to schedule and in terms of the contract, the painter will have to rectify the matter. If you do the painting, you have to live with it. When hiring it is a good idea to seek good references and ask to see examples of work the painter has already undertaken. You could even hire someone on trial, starting with one room or section of the house as a proving ground.

e t a v o n e r r o d l To bui Recycling water with bountiful results

Natural solutions to waste water problems are agreed to be the way forward for homes off the urban ‘grid’ — and even for those in big cities looking to reduce their environmental footprint. But now local company Simple Waste Water Solutions has hit upon a way to make even more from what was once a wasted resource. They have developed a ‘waste water garden’ system which uses naturally treated water to irrigate plants

all year round. The process begins as water leaves a Simple Waste Water Solutions ‘cascade’ of natural plant filters. At this point of the process the water has been naturally cleansed and filtered to a state where it is odourless and safe to use for plant irrigation. A roto molded base collects the water, where it is uptaken by a set of four vertical pipes, each housing an internal ‘stocking’ filled with garden mix. As it’s a modular system, the waste water garden can be designed to recycle large volumes of water and produce large volumes of veges and plants. Twenty cost-effective modules render eighty pipes, each growing a thriving plant which can easily be replaced after harvest time. For this system to work efficiently the plant filters and the gardens need to be covered to eliminating excess rain

Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau

Healthy Homes is a joint venture between two long standing community enterprises. He Iwi Kotahi Tatou trust (HIKTT) of Moerewa and the Community Business and Environment Centre (CBEC) who collectively have been working for your community for more than forty years. Healthy Homes was formed in 2008 as an operational arm of the two community enterprises and has now insulated over 7,000 homes in Northland. More than 5,000 of these have been fully funded by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), ASBct, Primary Health Organisations (Manaia Health and Te Tai Tokerau), the Northland District Health Board, Top Energy and Northpower. Healthy Homes has now grown to be the largest locally owned and operated insulation business in Northland. Healthy Homes have identified where the highest need and impact would be made by making homes warmer and drier through insulating Northland homes. So low income families with high health needs were the target group for the 5,000 homes completed at no cost and we will continue to target this group. It is a great outcome for our community as the downstream effect is improved health and wellbeing, less days off work and

school, and lowered costs at the medical centres and hospitals that ended up seeing the end result from un-insulated homes. For every $1 spent insulating houses in the target group there is a $5 cost benefit created downstream. There are strict guidelines as to who gets funding via the programme. However, Healthy Homes doesn’t stop there — we can insulate everything from older houses to new builds and have a variety of products and price options for client’s dependant on their needs — from higher than minimum building requirement insulation, to heat transfer kits, to sound proofing, to solar water heating and solar power systems. While insulation is definitely a great first step, we are now looking to make Northland’s homes more energy efficient. Make sure you come and chat to our knowledgeable staff at the Whangarei Home Show and let them guide you towards solutions for your home.

Thrill-seeking missile launched

There was a time, not so long ago, when 101 horsepower was considered somewhat excessive for a road-going car. Today, it’s almost the norm for a proper performance vehicle to top the ‘ton’. But for an off road machine — and one which can offer thrills and steer clear of spills across some of the roughest terrain — 101 horsepower is still a little scary. That is, until you see how this power is deployed to the ground in the latest iteration of Can Am’s successful Maverick, a machine which leads its class in power, but matches that grunt with some clever agility. Sure, that big 1,000cc Rotax engine churns out a formidable mountain of torque, but its a combination of intelligent chassis layout, independent rear suspension, and partnership components from some big industry names which make this exciting off roader really fly. The first stage of taming those 101 horses is control. Can Am teamed up with Bosch to create an intelligent throttle-by-wire system which irons out the bumps. Just nailed that big jump, but worried that a toe in the wrong place will send you revving into a ditch? Don’t worry — the throttle control system

detects unwanted bounces and bumps, smoothing the ride. A ‘bulletproof’ CVT transmission handles getting torque to the wheels where it’s needed. Keeping those wheels planted is down to a combination of the Maverick’s high frame rigidity and mid-engined layout (think about those mid-engined supercars with stiff carbon frames), coupled with double a-arm front suspension and torsion trailing arm rear suspension, all set up with Fox shocks, a name with racing pedigree. Final drive is routed through 27 inch Maxxis tyres, and the anchors for this beast are a set of four 214mm vented disc brakes. The Maverick has over a foot of ground clearance, too. What this all adds up to is a machine which can put down maximum power across mud, sand, even rubble

— delivering an off-road experience like no other. It may not have been designed with rural work in mind, but when it comes to having a good time,

the Maverick delivers. The icing on this particular cake is the way it looks — a wickedly designed machine which promises a unique driving experience.

Multi-tasking makes a great impression Versatility is key to the success of modern farms — especially when it comes to power equipment. Investing in a machine which can do not just one highly specialised job, but tackle two is a smart move, and farmers have come to demand less of a ‘narrow focus’ from their farm machinery accordingly.

A smart choice goes the distance When Great Wall utility vehicles were first offered here in New Zealand, not so long ago, there were the inevitable naysayers who picked on stereotypes of Chinese manufacturing.

Tigo’s multi-function loader wagon

One way to boost efficiency is to multi task — a job handled with aplomb by Lely’s new Tigo XR loader wagon and silage wagon. Developed in-house by the agri-machinery innovators themselves, this new series of machines was based on the principles of rugged reliability, nimble terrain handling, and of course, some serious capacity! The new wagons’ innovative superstructure has an integrated, hydraulically-adjustable, multi-function bulkhead. Making optimum use of the space above the extra wide pick-up provides an additional six cubic metres, and the whole package is designed to ensure absolute stability even when transporting huge amounts of crop. Lely has designed its new Tigo series with a generous inner frame width so

they can accommodate a greater load volume in a shorter vehicle. This makes the new Tigo XR the most compact combi wagon on the market. But with seven extra-wide tine bars, this small and mighty machine still boasts outstanding crop pick-up. The optional pick up tracer roller delivers an even cleaner job and keeps the pick-up out of harm’s way when working in New Zealand’s demanding field conditions. The rotational speeds of the rotor and pick-up are perfectly co-ordinated to ensure excellent crop flow and an enormous pick-up capacity. In short, this multi-tasking machine promises to work harder and smarter, making it a great investment on the farm.

Owners Bryce Marshall and Jan Wyllie began importing drift go karts into New Zealand seven years ago, and now supply them to buyers all over the country — both young and old. Children enjoy the safe, fun little four stroke machines of course, but adults up to 120kgs find them irresistible too!

As their reputation grows and more people give drift karting a try this ‘little brother’ to the drift racing craze is gaining momentum. “Drift go karts are extremely safe to use — they have a low centre of gravity while still maintaining good ground clearance,” says Bryce.

The Polaris Ranger should be a well known sight by now to anyone who’s anyone in rural New Zealand. These versatile machines have had a strong showing at the recent Mystery Creek Fieldays and have steadily built a loyal fan base over the years with rugged, dependable grunt in the harshest conditions. But there has always been another side to Polaris as well. It’s a side epitomised by the more fiery temperament and track-bred sensibilities of their RZR range — most specifically the potent RZR 900. The key to the performance of the big RZR is its 875cc ProStar engine, an almost ridiculously efficient mill which churns out 60 horses from its twin cylinders. It’s enough to catapult the RZR through the toughest of off road courses, through dunes, mud and more. And now that same engine has found a home in what Polaris must surely see as the ‘ultimate recipe’ — the new Ranger XP 900. The newest Ranger blends RZR aggression with the practicality rural folks demand from a working machine. There’s no shortage of style — check out those mag wheels, the rakish new cage

design, and the almost ‘stealth’ panel design. But there’s plenty of substance, too, thanks to that powerful twin-pot overhead cam engine, coupled to the toughest CVT box Polaris have ever engineered. There’s been no sacrifice of vital load space or capacity either — this model is in fact longer than 2012’s, with a large carrying tray and plenty of torque to shift heavy gear. Perhaps most exciting of all is the option to completely enclose the cab, isolating the driver and passenger from the elements. Sounds like a great idea in this cold weather! And all the trademarked Lock and Ride panels — from windshield to doors — are a snap to take on and off as jobs demand. With the XP 900 Polaris have put together their best extruded tubing cage, their best motor, and their best suite of handy little innovations to build the Ranger you wish you owned.

Hoof Print with Fred Hoekstra

Are you ready for the new season? When it comes to being organised with staff and machinery you probably are, but what about lameness? Or, are you like many who believe they won’t get lame cows this year? It is a bit like a new year’s resolution. I guess it is understandable that people have every intention of doing their best in keeping this stock affliction down, but how are they going to achieve it? It is not going to happen automatically. You require a strategy, but in order to have a strategy you need a good understanding of the contributing factors of the condition. I have written many articles about these factors and I will continue to do so, but what are you going to do when you do end up with lame cows — and you will get them. How many do you need before you consider it a problem? Would you consider five cows in your lameness herd throughout the season a problem? I know that many farmers would be more than happy if they only had five throughout the season. Let’s break it down. If you have a milking season of 40 weeks and if cows are lame on an average of four weeks then you will about 50 lame cows that season Registered Electrician have because you replace the five affected cows every four weeks, so, over 40 weeks you replace them 10 times. How much does a lame cow cost you? That also depends on who you talk to. fair price Some people say $50 and some people

say a $1,000. A few years ago we sent out a questionnaire to 300 dairy farmers. With the answers that farmers were coming back with, we worked out that the average cost per lame cow in Canterbury was around $1,200. That may seem very high but if you have a cow that is not in calf because of lameness then you have to replace that empty cow with a cow that is in calf. That in itself would cost you over $1,000 without the treatment cost or loss of production cost added on. Then there are also plenty of cows that need to be culled because of lameness even though they are in calf. So I think you should work with a cost on average of $500 per lame cow. That is possibly still on the conservative side, but in our example of 50 lame cows during the season you have a cost of $25,000. I don’t know about you but there are many good things that I could do with $25,000! In my travels I come across many farmers who haven’t thought about the cost too much. I am just trying to put things into perspective. There are plenty of new milking sheds being built that have no facilities to trim cows. Some people seem to find it hard to justify buying a crush or doing a hoof trimming course because they don’t have many lame cows. You don’t need many lame cows to have a problem that costs you lots of money, let alone considering the animal welfare costs.

New feed pad boosts productivity

While the concept of feed pads is not new, the giant covered prototype unit, recently completed by Whangarei-based Guyco Construction at Ambie Beatty’s Tangiteroria property, utilises a ‘dry scrape’ effluent removal, but with a unique storage method. Guyco Operations Manager Glenn Taylor explains that with dry scraping, effluent is removed by a bob-cat, tractor or quad bike mounted scraper, but rather than being broken down by water or weather outside the pad, the new structure has a holding area under the same roof, where it can be dried for later spreading as required — a concept he believes is the key difference. “It’s the first one of its kind in Northland and the pluses of dry effluent storage are many. It reduces water use, there’s no need for solids traps or irrigation systems and therefore a lower

overall cost — all real pluses in today’s farming climate.” He says the covered feed pad also provides year round weather shelter as well as reducing the often considerable liquid waste generated by traditional methods. Sited within metres of the milking sheds, the 700 square metre structure can hold 100 cows per side and as well as being a feed pad, can also be used as a stand-off area. Ambie Beatty says the since the new facility started being used, they have only had to scrape it about once a week,

but adds the effluent holding area will accommodate all of the winter’s waste, which he says he plans to use on his maize crops. “I’ve seen maize grown with this fertilisation and the results are amazing — so much better, I am quite excited about using it for the first time.”

He said the Regional Council have also given the new facility a big environmental tick and are encouraging more farmers to adopt the system. As for other advantages? Ambie was not so sure about a suggestion the large structure could also double as a wedding or event marquee for hire.

Guyco Construction’s operations manager Glenn Taylor, showing off the new feed pad, says they can build most farm structures to meet specific needs

Dairying

Milking the Fonterra story Comment by Paul Campbell

New Zealand has sold itself to the world as a clean and green source of dairy products and the events this month have seriously sullied our reputation. The saga is still unfolding at the time of writing, but the fallout has already registered in a drop in dairy product prices on the world platform. As we go to press, there are still a myriad conflicting stories and comments. From a dirty pipe in a provincial factory in New Zealand, we have been led to

a ‘first’ discovery of the infant formula powder problem across the Tasman. While the crisis unfolded, the fact was that it beggars belief that it took so long for our farmer-owned company to react. This writer remembers a student stint in a paint factory in Auckland. Before any batch of paint was even sent to the canning plant, it was sampled in the on site laboratory, obviously for quality, and a clearance was issued. It was not rocket science! The fallout from of the Fonterra debacle, for surely that’s what it is, can be measured in the world’s media and it’s headlines. A major news agency carries reports that ‘New Zealand’s environmental credentials are not as impeccable as many would think. ‘The majority of its rivers are too polluted to swim in. Its record on preservation of natural environments is among the worst in the world on a per capita basis. And it is the only OECD

country that does not produce a regular national report on its environment’. While the world’s media enjoys a free rein in the slanging stakes, it must be said that our food safety regimes are some of the world’s toughest, and that’s the double edged sword we are dealing with at present. The infant formula

contaminated only appeared because of stringent testing regimes. This writer has to wonder, growing up in the second half of last century, just how much modern science contributes to economic panic, as mere suspicion turns into consumer rejection. But that’s of course a cynical view.

How do I increase your Brix levels in pasture

Instead of re-grassing your paddocks and going through the expense of buying new ‘high sugar’ grass seed and sowing the seed and so on, you can actually increase the Brix levels in your pasture with a few simple steps. knowing what your soil and plants needs through using the Reams Soil Test. The Reams Soil Test is different from your standard soil test you may have had done in the past. Developed by Dr Carey Reams using milder extractants to mimic how plant roots extract minerals from the soil, the Reams Soil Test tells us what minerals in the soil are available for plants to use. The Reams Soil Test quickly shows us when plants need more minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. BEFORE

AFTER

Brix is the measure of the concentration of sugars, vitamins and other minerals dissolved within plant.

High nitrogen rates applied to pasture does not increase brix levels. In fact it does the opposite.

A refractometer is used to measure the Brix level of the plant. The higher the Brix level, the more sugars and minerals in the pasture, the healthier your stock will be.

In a paddock that is transitioning to biological farming, which received 200kg/ha of Environmental Fertilisers’ BioRocket (a nitrogen fertiliser), the Brix measured 7, compared to an area that

received twice the amount of BioRocket at 400kg/ha, where the Brix was only 5. To increase your Brix levels in your pasture you need to supply your plants with luxury levels of calcium and phosphorus, with boron to back it up. The only way to do this is through

Nutrition — the life enhancer

We eat food for its nutrient value to keep ourselves alive and energised, but what happens when the food we eat has no nutritional value? We get no value from that food, worse than that, the cells in our bodies that look after us do not recognise food that has no value, they don’t know what to do with it, so they just store it in the body. Today, especially in the USA due to the lack of minerals in food, people weighing 200 kilos and more are dying from malnutrition while surrounded by food that has no nutritional value, but is engineered to be addictive.

According to Dr Melchoir Dikkers, professor of Biochemistry at Loyola University (Los Angeles) malnutrition is the most important problem confronting mankind at the present time. The United States, despite its boasted food production, is grossly undernourished and although per capita the expenditure on healthcare in the USA is the highest in the world, so is the incidence of cancer, obesity, heart and circulatory diseases. Amazingly, Dr Joseph Weissman, associate professor of the UCLA College of Medicine, a specialist in preventative medicine and immunology, has discovered that nearly all the non-infectious diseases that presently plagues mankind, are of origin, developed during the 20th century. Billions of dollars spent on research, newer diagnostic

techniques, organ transplants, coronary by-pass procedures, chemotherapy, radiation and all various drugs, have not altered the advance of these killer diseases, but instead have merely enriched the chemists and medical practioners. These diseases reflect malnutrition. Malnutrition begins in the soil. Today’s soils are tired, depleted, sick, poisoned by synthetic chemicals and void of minerals. Minerals in the soil control the metabolism of cells in plants, animal and man. Diseases are created chiefly by destroying the harmony reigning among mineral substances present in infinitesimal amounts in air, water, food, but most importantly in soil. Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are designed to bring minerals, microbes and health and vitality back to the soil. All life is dependent upon the soil! So by getting the soil right that health and vitality in the soil will permeate through to all life above the soil — to plants, animals and people. It is not only a simple system it is effective. The lack of minerals in our soils today is the result of toxic nutrient deficient chemical fertilisers, so, if you want to turn your farm around you need to work on your soil and that’s where Agrissentials begins by turning your soil into a live, living, breathing, pulsating, energy rich soil full of minerals, micro-organisms and health. Retirement Passing the torch to a

new generation of farmers

According to statistics, the average age of the Kiwi farmer is 58 — and it’s an average which is growing as the large ‘baby boomer’ demographic moves into the sixty-five-plus bracket. Those in more urban industries are encouraged to put their feet up when retirement beckons, but for farmers the decision to step aside can be a hard one, especially when the family farm has been handed down from generations before, and may have no clear heir apparent. There’s also a hardy, never-give-up attitude inherent to the New Zealand farmer’s mentality — one that’s often needed to push through inclement weather, market instabilities and the responsibilities of what can be an isolated calling. This attitude sometimes means that it’s hard to hand the reins over to a new generation. But it is important to plan ahead, even if for today and the foreseeable future there’s still no slowing down. Currently the United States is experiencing a

crisis of older farmers unable to find successors to take over the land. The UK faces similar problems. In some countries this has seen family farms conglomerated into large corporate operations, driving young farmers out of the market for land to begin afresh. New Zealand does not have the same factors or the same problems — for now — but good advice is still key when it’s time to leave fencing, calving and all those other farm chores behind forever. Talk to your accountant and lawyer about succession planning, especially if your kids want to follow in your footsteps — they are the best source of peace of mind and practical information when it comes to ensuring that your farm and your family have a secure future.

Wool Perspective From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Wool season opens firmly An extremely buoyant wool market was experienced at closing wool auctions held on June 27 in both Napier and Christchurch and when the new season began in Napier on July 11 the market opened pretty much where it had left off — very firmly. PGG Wrightson auction managers in each island reported remarkable clearance rates of close to 100% at the closing June sales, and a clearance of around 97% at the first Napier sale. With such strong demand for wool in the face of dwindling supply and an obvious low stock level, most greasy wool which may have been held by growers for (in some cases) up to several years, was cleared throughout the season just past, leaving a relatively ‘clean slate’ for the new season. With winter having kicked-in in earnest since the middle of June, supplies of new wool have been very slow coming forward for sale, placing further pressure on the market place. At the time of writing the first South Island catalogues were being compiled for the July 18 auction with weekly sales scheduled for five subsequent weeks, however due to wet conditions experienced in many South Island areas affecting shearing, a question mark hung over the following week’s auction with limited wool volumes likely to be available. Across the Tasman, the fine wool market has proven difficult to predict over the past month amongst offerings covering a wide variety of types. When auctions ceased on July 11 prior to a three-week recess there was only approximately $2 clean per kilogram difference between 17 micron and 20 micron fleece wool. Observers will show interest when the Australian wool market

opens in early August and whether the well grown wools (and often longer stapled than usual as a result of generally good feed conditions) witnessed prior to the recess draw better support. Forward contracts covering a range of mainly crossbred and some midmicron wool types are currently being offered by PGG Wrightson as a result of very good demand from mainly off-shore customers of their exporting arm, Bloch and Behrens. Based around the current strong, demand driven wool price, many growers have welcomed the opportunity to lockin certainty for at least a portion of their wool clip, perhaps six months or more prior to shearing.

Whilst no-one can accurately predict where wool market levels will be in the future due to such influences as exchange rates, wool volumes, competitor wool markets, competitor fibers, financial conditions, etcetera, it is useful for farmers and/or their financiers, to know that at least a portion of future farm income is locked-in, in advance.

As more irrigation is introduced, it’s highly likely the sheep population will further decline, with New Zealand wool becoming an even scarcer commodity than it is today, and wool production and preparation skills will remain extremely important to ensure customer confidence.

PGG Wrightson is also pleased that they are now able to market and sell fine wool types once again. The experienced wool marketing team is no stranger to fine wools and look forward to being of assistance to growers who wish to use their expertise and knowledge.

THE ONE STOP ALPACA SHOP

New Zealand has long been regarded as the producer of the best crossbred wool in the world because of the wool’s wonderful properties of very good scoured colour, superb tensile strength and great character. However, poor monetary returns to farmers from sheep and the effects of the introduction of irrigation, to many parts of the South Island in particular, has brought considerable change to farming practices, and a rapid fall in quantity to date of not just crossbred but also many mid-micron wools (Corriedale and Halfbred) which have also long been, and still are, highly sought after.

That’s my view.

Why wax or shave again? I am a sporty woman and enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities such as tennis, swimming, and scuba diving. Every summer I was spending goodness knows how much time visiting my beauty therapist for regular waxing of my bikini and underarm areas. I found waxing great for the first couple of weeks following but oh the ingrown hairs! The other annoying thing was waiting for the hairs to become long enough to wax. I could use the razor, but then this would became itchy and prickly. With this in mind and during one of my waxing sessions my therapist suggested I consider laser hair removal. I decided to find out more. Firstly I had a consultation with Jolene at Caci in Whangarei, who explained all about Caci’s Freedom programme. I only needed to come for treatments every six weeks which was easier than my regular waxing appointments which I was having every four weeks. Next was my first appointment with Margy the laser therapist at Caci Whangarei. Margy explained the treatment procedure and answered my questions. Have to say I was feeling nervous at this stage but whilst it felt hot, it was so quick that it was literally over in a flash. Wow this is easy I thought — waxing is more painful!

After about a week I noticed the hairs were starting to fall out. Funny, cause even though they had told me this would happen I was forever the skeptic. I have now had eight sessions with Margy and the difference is considerable. While I still have a small amount of very light hairs remaining, I don’t need to bother with waxing or shaving anymore and the ingrown hairs are thankfully a thing of the past. I didn’t realise how draining hair removal had become for me, and how much better and confidant I now feel. Summer is for just a few months of the year but now I feel more feminine all year round. I would happily recommend the team at Caci Whangarei for this treatment and have told everybody willing to lend me an ear about it because it has honestly changed my life! Thanks! It’s estimated that the average women spends the equivalent of one whole day each year shaving. Ditch the razor, take control and gain freedom from unwanted hair with Caci. Until August 31 2013, Caci are offering you the opportunity to treat two areas for the price of one with their laser hair removal programme Freedom®.

Take care of yourself this winter Wouldn’t it be great if all we had to do during winter is curl up by the fire, catch up on reading and watching movies, eat comfort food and go on a tropical holiday. The reality of course especially for rural folk is that winter is a time of working hard in the harsher weather, managing calving and all the other things that happen at this time of year. It is important to find ways of caring for ourselves all year round and especially so in the winter. It is very easy to empty our personal tanks out and run on empty… this can lead to feeling more and more stressed, run down, tired and generally low. With all the jobs that need doing and the

pressures of running a farm, family and home how is it practical to practice good self-care? Noticing changes in how you are feeling both emotionally and physically is important. Taking some “me time” is not selfish — it is a practical step to keeping well during stressful times. Try the following: Make yourself a hot drink and actually take the time to sit and enjoy it. Give yourself some time to read a book or look at a magazine. Do some gentle stretches, pay attention to your breath, connect with someone you trust, turn your music up and dance around the living room, sing, shout and remember to work at accepting the things that you are not able to change. Write your own list of things to do that bring you some respite and try them either by yourself or with a friend. If you are feeling that things are really getting on top of you, talk to your GP or a counsellor who is a member of NZAC. Take care of yourself this winter…

A 150th In Maungaturoto On Sunday there will be an interdenominational church service and the dedication of a ‘memorial ashes wall’.

Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for energy and a deficiency will can make us abnormally tired with weak muscles. As an antioxidant it also prevents dangerous oxidation of cholesterol trapped in artery walls which is the first cause of the plaques that restrict coronary blood flow. We produce CoQ10 less efficiently as we age. The creeping tiredness that affects us later in life can be from insufficient CoQ10. Statin medications also reduce CoQ10 and is often responsible for many of the side effects including muscle weakness, pain and general malaise. Some problems especially autoimmune and neurological disease seem to lower CoQ10 levels possibly through increased demand from the disease processes.

On the Saturday, at 10.30am, there will be a settlers landing re-enactment and a powhiri at the landing site in Bickerstaffe Road followed by a parade ‘through the ages’ to the Maungaturoto Country Club. Old time sports and entertainment will occupy the afternoon, followed by

I add CoQ10 either as a separate patented US sourced product or as part of my own energy formula with CoQ10, B vitamins, resveratrol, lipoic acid and many other energy co factors.
