Resource consents for farm water?

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES August 2014

by Colin Patterson

Claims that Northland farmers might soon need resource consents to take water have been labelled premature by regional council chairman Bill Shepherd. Farmers of New Zealand representative Hugh Rose attended a meeting organised by Dairy NZ and the regional council at which the issue was discussed, and said afterwards: “Frankly I am horrified at yet another layer of compliance costs being forced upon farmers under the pretext of water usage. It would seem they intend to roll out in the Mangere catchment towards the end of August a requirement for all dairy farmers to apply firstly for a consent to use water.” Mr Rose says a system like this would penalise hard-working farmers. Farmers of New Zealand operations director Bill Guest says a requirement for resource consents could place some farmers in breach of animal welfare laws if consents are declined or have punitive conditions attached. However Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd says while a requirement for consents “is very much on the cards” no decisions have been made. “What we’ve got is a working group that is going through the requirements of the National Water Policy Statement.”

“There is a suggestion that the Northland Regional Council is driving this. However, higher water quality standards are being driven by central government, the community and by overseas markets. We’re the ones caught in the middle. We don’t pass the laws. We work with the laws passed by parliament.” Mr Shepherd says consultation with affected stakeholders — such as Fonterra, Dairy NZ and farmers is at an early stage and adds: ”We’ve got a long way to go.” Together with councils around the country, the NRC has previously signalled it was planning to control groundwater use to better Hugh Rose from Farmers of New Zealand manage the resources with the prospect of requiring anyone taking Potentially many of the region’s 1100 more than the permitted 10 cubic dairy farmers would have to get consent, metres a day from streams, lakes or and farm representatives have been rivers to apply for consent. fighting the move.

to contact us. If we don’t know, we can’t help.” Ms Jonker says calls are still coming into the rural support trust. Nevertheless, most farmers understand that extreme climatic events are a fact of life. “Everyone is getting on with it. Farmers are incredibly resilient and hard working.” There is an urgent need for alternate grazing with many pastures likely to be out of action for months. Mr Ludbrook says anyone who can offer alternate grazing could contact the trust on 0800 787 254. He says farmers are not seeking any further help from government, following its declaration of a medium adverse weather event, which opened up assistance through the rural support trust. While farmers can theoretically apply for financial help through Work and Income, Mr Ludbrook says few will qualify. “There is a hardship grant. But to get it you can’t own any assets. Farmers are never eligible.” However, he agrees that sharemilkers who don’t own a farm or a herd could be eligible for help. Mr Ludbrook says it is important that farmers keep an open dialogue with their banks, which are often prepared to show flexibility if they know that is necessary. “It’s important if you are facing

financial hardship to talk with your bank.” He says there is plenty of advice for farmers wanting to rebuild their farm’s infrastructure, with rural servicing companies such as Farmlands, RD1, and PGC having professionals who can guide farmers on the best path to recovery, while Ballance and Ravensdown are advising farmers on fertiliser application and when they should begin re-grassing their pastures. Farmers might also be eligible for help from Enhanced Taskforce Green, a scheme in which unemployed people help with cleaning up after extreme climatic events. Farmers can register for Enhanced Taskforce Green through the Rural Support Trust. In the weeks after the storm the Rural Support Trust and Dairy NZ ran a series of dinners around the region to enable farmers to get off the farm and share stories. Ms Jonker says the dinners have been very successful with more than 200 attending the event at Tangiteroria. Meanwhile, local councils face a huge repair bill for roads damaged in the storm, although the government has indicated it may pay up to 90% of the cost of repairs.

THE ROAD

to Fruition

BY CYNTHIA MATTHEWS

The present enterprise has grown from a project of her father’s. Bret McKay holds longstanding interests in developing cultivators.

H

e found the 6ha block 15 years ago while on a work trip from Auckland. The kernel of the orchard was born when he imported tissue culture Faan Retief guava from South Africa. Feijoa and a range of citrus (including oranges, Bearss lime and Kaffir limes) were also established. Janine and husband Darryl worked in Auckland as a medical photographer and in information technology. They moved north and for the first nine

months lived on the large shed on the property. Her father’s commitments had been elsewhere for several years and fruit lay in the orchard unharvested. “We saw the trees and thought, we can do something here.” The couple now own the majority of the land. Janine has run the business for the last two years. With young children, family contribution makes it all work. “When the kids came along we said to Dad, ‘You’d better get up

here’,” says Janine. Bret continues experimenting with cultivars at the block and Janine’s mother helps with the children, while Darryl’s parents are over most weekends from Kerikeri, enabling Janine to sell at the Saturday markets and work outside on Sunday. The three children are at preschool and primary school. “The house has to run with something like military precision at times,” Janine laughs. The Fords organise to have family time and to visit local beaches when there’s an opportunity. They also like the children involved in the orchard. Picking the feijoas helps them understand work and livelihood, Janine explains. All produce sold is grown on the property, from fresh fruit and vegetables to exotic pickles, jams, jellies and chutneys which cater for New Zealanders’ growing taste diversity. The shed, once accommodating the two generations of new ‘homesteaders,’ now houses the plant as well as the processing kitchen. Besides the orchard, the four hectares under cultivation supports a productive vegetable plot to supply the chutneys and pickles. The summer garden grows tomatoes and Cupola — a

Janine and Darryl in the Dilly Dally ktichen

Janine and her father remain enthusiastic about the orchard’s Faan Retief guava. The fruit is much larger than the cherry guava’s. “The variety grows fast, is adaptable and can handle different conditions including dry spells,” Bret explains. The trees Janine describes as “barely hanging in there” had never been pruned when she took over the orchard. With fertilising, they are bushy and cropping two seasons after a hard prune. Feijoas also grow well. “The key is watering the tree as soon as it has set flowers,” says Janine. The orchard bore has helped in recent droughts. Pollination has increased

since hives were installed on the property. The Fords don’t spray. The guava moth attacks feijoas as well. “There’s much more at the beginning of season and it runs its own cycle. We just live with it,” says Janine. Orchard production is up from last year, and the Fords’ market is expanding. It means Darryl will spend more time at the orchard and less at local IT work and he plans to set up complementary hydroponics at the site. The couple has the opportunity to test the market every weekend and Janine says she has customers who keep returning. “It means we’re on the right track,” she says.

EDUCATION IS KEY for dedicated team

Former vet nurse Michelle Horan was awaiting a flight home from the Philippines when she started talking to a fellow traveller about the plight of Egypt’s horses.

F

our months later, that initial talk gave rise to the Kiwi Care Team — a New Zealand-based group of volunteer vets, nurses, equine dentists, farriers and passionate individuals, who are providing education and assistance to better the lives of working animals around the world. “Basically, it all started when I went to the Philippines with a film crew investigating the dog meat market and during the trip I got talking to a friend about the state of horses in Egypt,” says Michelle. “On the way home, I decided that something needed to be done — not so far as giving free stuff to people, which is what a lot of animal charities seemed to be doing, but in terms of educating people. Literally four months later, we had a team on the plane to Cairo.” Social media played an essential role in recruiting KCT. “I put the idea on facebook and it went viral. I had a lot of interest from people who wanted to get on board and

also those who said ‘you can’t do it’ but that just made me more determined.” In March 2012, KCT embarked on their first humanitarian trip to Egypt to assist in the health, education and rehabilitation of severely malnourished and injured Pyramid horses, donkeys and camels. The team had seen photos of the situation in Cairo but what they were met with was an entirely different situation. With temperatures exceeding 40 degrees celsius and widespread riots, the trip was not glamorous but provided a unique experience for the team. Over a hectic three weeks, KCT treated over 400 animals and left with great hope of improving conditions for working animals. Six months after their maiden voyage to Egypt, the team travelled to Fiji’s Lautoka area. There it became clear that all working horses in developing countries face very similar situations. The team have since returned to Fiji on several occasions and have also

attracted me to them. Long term, I plan to stay in New Zealand and I hope to see the Kiwi Care Team advance and to turn into something on the scale of the Donkey Sanctuary or SPANA, which are two similar groups in the UK. These groups have grown to a size where they are self-sustaining and that’s where I’d like to see us headed, so we can leave a legacy in places like Fiji.” Chloe Phillips-Harris is a full time rider and horse trainer from the Bay of Islands who has travelled to Cairo, Fiji and India with the KCT. “I was looking to do something good in the world and my background with horses led me to the Kiwi Care Team, which is something I’m incredibly passionate about. I feel so lucky to be a part of an amazing team of people and I hope to be able to continue the work we do for a long time to come. I’m proud of the work we do and I think we

are making real progress in the lives of animals and also in the villages where we work. We are making a difference.” KCT is a non-profit organisation, so rallying interest in the Kiwi public is of utmost importance. Team members fundraise to buy medical supplies but pay their own flights, accommodation and living costs. Medicine alone for KCT’s last trip to Fiji was three and half thousand dollars. “These trips are not a joyride and our volunteers need to be aware of that. We are full-on, 16 hours a day, from dawn to dusk. The work however, is very rewarding and the people we work with are genuinely appreciative of what we do.” For more information on the Kiwi Care Team and to find out how to become involved and support the organisation, visit their website www.kiwicareteam. co.nz or Facebook page. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

New life on the farm

The agricultural annual baby boom is underway and the pressure is on as calves and lambs dominate the farming landscape over the next two months. Although a harrowing time for the farmer we all hope and pray the weather is at least favourable. One of the really beautiful things during this period is the new life that abounds on the farms — it is a period of renewed hope for the future of farming and for our country overall. As you move around the farming areas listening to those new little voices and watching them running and playing, it gives a marvellous feeling of hope and prosperity for everyone. From Agrissentials’ point of view we not only see the wonder of this new life above the soil but also, as the temperature rises, we recognise the awakening and multiplication of the soil life; the micro-organisms and the macro-organisms especially the worms

within the soil. Here is another level of life that also needs recognition as it is an integral part of farming. All life above the soil is intrinsically coupled to the microscopic life and worms and their recycling system below the soil. The heavy use of chemical over the past 30 years has seen the destruction of this unique soil recycling system resulting in soil erosion and pollution of farms and our environment. Agrissentials however, specialises in rebuilding the soils recycling system with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which reinstate fertility, health and productivity back into the soil. Top soil is natural capital which has supported life on the planet since the day life began. Today, globally, destruction and erosion of this once bountiful natural capital is becoming a major concern. It is time to turn this situation around and begin using products that not only keep production pumping, but also, through the recycling system build topsoil depth through the activities of the micro-organisms and their ability to build humus (which is carbon) which is topsoil. Once you get this microbial wealth, living breathing and multiplying throughout your soil your farming world will begin to change to a point where you will quietly step off the chemical-treadmill and get back to real farming: producing new life below the soil and healthy new life above the soil — the best of both worlds. One of our Southland farmers who has been on our program for six years or more, got out his mower to cut the hay: only metres into the job he broke both belts on the mower. He went and bought two new belts but then decided to call in a contractor to cut the grass. The comment from the contractor after cutting was that it was the first time ever on that tractor that he had had to drop to a lower gear to get the job done. Here is the proof, that if you can get the soil right, the grass will be more nutritious, with a thicker sword, resulting in strong healthy animals which should fetch a better price. It all comes back to the soil. Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are just that: bringing life, fertility, health and vitality back to the soil for a better farming world. New Zealand’s isolation, soils and weather make us a strong agricultural and horticultural country, giving us the opportunity to be the best producers on the planet. Look after the soil and the soil will look after the farm and the farm will look after you and yours. Dan Carter is the farmers’ friend. His blower unit makes the delivery of stock feed and urea to farms simple and convenient. Most importantly, it saves them money. Dan runs Carters BulkHaul and is well-known among farmers in Northland and the Kaipara. His trucks deliver stock feed and urea around the region’s farms, providing a speedy and quality service that farmers appreciate. Now Dan and his team are offering an enhanced service. His truck is fitted with a blower unit that pumps stock feed and urea into silos. The blower unit can be used to pump loads in the reverse direction — from silos into trucks. Moreover, Dan’s truck and trailer has separate blower units, meaning they can carry differing loads at the same time, For farmers, it means smaller loads become

From the Minister Nathan Guy, Minister for Primary Industries

Improving water quality One of the big issues for farmers, and all New Zealanders, is improving how we manage our freshwater rivers and lakes. When it comes to water quality I’ve always said there is no point looking back over our shoulder, blaming council sewer plants, industry or agriculture. What matters is getting on with the job so that we leave a better environment for our children and grandchildren. This month I was proud to announce clear, robust national standards for freshwater with my colleague Environment Minister, Amy Adams. For the first time, New Zealand rivers and lakes will have minimum requirements that must be achieved so water quality is suitable for the ecosystem and human health. These reforms are ground-breaking because

this is the first time we have consistent measurement and standards across the country. It’s a bit like ‘National Standards’ in education, but for water. Up till now we just haven’t had this consistency. I’m confident these changes balance economic growth with environmental sustainability. It’s not an either-or situation — we need both. This will mean changes to some of our farming practices, but I know farmers are up to the challenge. I believe most farmers are environmentalists. They want to leave the environment in a better state than they found it. We’ve seen huge progress by farmers over the last 10

Tried, tested, proven

Before a single Pacific Seeds hybrid makes it through to commercial release, the company really put them to the test. It starts with an international selection process that spans the globe — followed by at least three years of demanding and closely monitored trials in the New Zealand environment. “So if they are on our commercial hybrid list — you know they’ll deliver,” says Pacific Seeds’ Territory Manager Barry Smallridge. Pacific Seeds’ maize hybrids are bred to deliver strong performance. “That’s why hybrids like PAC 624, PAC 606, PAC 456 and DKC57-83, which are ideal for Northland,

Waikato and Bay of Plenty, have performed so well over the last few seasons. The first three are silage-only hybrids and each has had exceptional endorsement from our growers — both in regard to yield and silage quality,” says Barry. PAC 624 is a high-yielding full-season hybrid that produces a soft-starchy, easily-digestible grain with recorded ME consistently in the 12–13% range. Kelly Ludlow has been growing PAC 624 for the past five seasons and it now a mainstay in his maizehybrid mix.

“If you’re looking for maize hybrids that consistently deliver - whatever the conditions Pacific Seeds has got you covered.” Kelly Ludlow

Whangarei

We’ve grown PAC 624 for the past 4 seasons and it has performed really well with yields consistently exceeding 25 tonnes/ha. The soft starchy grain is easily digestible with ME levels around 12-13%.

TRIED, TESTED, PROVEN: Pacific Seeds maize hybrids are bred to deliver strong performance across the following:

Dry matter yields and grain yield/quality. Yield stability across environments and seasons. Standability, drought and disease resistance.

“This high-yielding hybrid lets us minimise our land requirements without any compromise to the amount of feed quality that we can harvest.” During last season some Northland growers reported yields exceeding 30 tonnes per hectare with PAC 624. PAC 606 is a medium/tall, full-season hybrid with mediumplant bulk, huge cobs and very good staygreen. Ngatea dairy farmer Ross Carter has grown this hybrid for a number of seasons. “Our experience with PAC 606 and PAC 624 has been really positive,” he says. “We need a hybrid that can stand up to the winds that roar in off the Firth of Thames and these two handle it better than anything else that we’ve grown here. “They have also been really consistent high yielders for us with 25 tonnes per hectare being the norm and ME levels in excess of 11%.” “PAC 456 also recorded high yields last season”, says Barry. “Growers were also impressed by this hybrid’s silage quality, standability and long harvest window.” DKC57-83 is a full-season grain-preferred hybrid with features that include fast dry down and ease of harvest. It has become a firm favourite with the region’s growers, like Jeff Gorringe of Gorringe Brothers Ltd in Katikati. “We’re into our fourth season with this hybrid and it’s has been a really consistent performer for us, with yields always up around the top end. “Best of all, it is always about 2% drier than the next best hybrid that we grow,” Jeff says. Pacific Seeds’ commitment ensures New Zealand growers are provided with hybrids well suited to meet their specific performance requirements. This season’s range is no exception. “So regardless of where you’re located, if you’re looking for hybrids that consistently deliver, Pacific Seeds has got you covered,” says Barry. Forestry — it’s supply and demand Too much wood and not enough sales — that’s the message brought back from a recent visit to China by forestry executive Allan Laurie. In his role with Laurie Forestry Ltd, he says he saw at first hand the story was pretty much the same everywhere — too much wood and not enough sales. He was investigating a June decline with A grade logs heading down past US$130 per cubic metre from an almost all time high of US$160+ in March/April. “Indeed settlements of US$120 have been commonplace.” says Allan. “I focus on China because many readers may not be aware of why these peaks and troughs occur. The following is a combination of fact, and in part my theories on this key market, and basically how New Zealand really mucks up providing a stable price and volume platform. “Firstly it is important to understand that New Zealand and New Zealandbased companies dominate the softwood log market in China. I was going to say controls the market there

but control is not something we appear to understand or use to our advantage.” Mr Laurie said this New Zealand winter, softwood log consumption across the China eastern seaboard is running at about 40,000 cubic metres per day compared to the 65,000 per day the market was consuming at the same time last year. “Trying to get a handle on what is happening right now in terms of New Zealand total production is very difficult. This is because logging crews are parking up all over the country and

delivery rates to ports are dropping daily. To allow the market to recover quickly we have to get delivery rates to China below the million cubic metre mark or 35,000 per day. This is a drop in national harvest of 400,000+ cubic metres per month. In early July it appeared a long run of inventory building was starting to slow with an expectation the reported vessel arrivals in June would be way down. Indeed the total inventory crept very close to 5 million cubic metres, close to 4 months’ supply. i based, Whangare ed and operated n locally ow M THE

Whangarei

The heart of Northland Whangarei, NZ’s warmest city with 100 beaches is just a two hour drive or 25 minute flight north of Auckland — ideal for your weekend break! In fact, nowhere in the Whangarei District is more than 40 kilometres from the coast and, with the Bay of Islands an easy one hour drive, it’s the ideal base for your Northland short break. Whangarei is Northland’s only city and largest commercial hub. It is well served by a buoyant retail centre, art galleries, museums, restaurants and cafes, bars and events. Natural attractions include some of the best walks you’ll ever do, world class water activities including fishing, diving and surfing, and New Zealand’s first Growers Market. The waters of the Whangarei Harbour lap into the Town Basin, an international yachting community hub, uniquely positioned in the city centre and founded on the city’s reputation for a warm welcome and excellence in boat building and maintenance. This marina precinct features galleries with world class art, alongside cafes and speciality shops. Enjoy the Town Basin Loop Walkway by foot or by bike. It is all weather, wheel chair friendly with Sculpture and Heritage Trails, and a great kids’ playground — pick up a coffee or an ice cream before you head off for a most pleasant stroll. Don’t miss seeing the bascule (opening) bridge, Te Matau a Pohe, which was completed in 2013 and has since won many international awards for its unique design. Whangarei has an artisan’s heart with events, galleries and markets celebrating this. Start with the otherworldly air at the Quarry Arts Centre, wander through town via the Old Library Community Arts Centres, down to the Town Basin and check out the galleries there.

Travel through heritage stone wall country and discover the outstanding Tutukaka Coast, rated second best coastline in the world by the prestigious National Geographic. It’s also the gateway to the extraordinary Poor Knights Islands Reserve. Global explorers and divers Jacques Cousteau and Ellis Emmett, separated by decades, both rate the Poor Knights Marine Reserve as providing some of the best diving in our world. You won’t get a much better recommendation than that! Even if you don’t want to get wet, go anyway. Cruise around the island, hear the stories of its history and its unique environment, flora and fauna — it’s an amazing experience. Come on up to Whangarei! Chill out. Relax. Unwind… then head home recharged.

Whangarei

The very best of Northland by Paul Campbell

The old cliche about Northland being winterless can get a little tired now and then, but certainly in the current climes, the temperatures are up and there is growth everywhere, with farm grass growing and gardens burgeoning. It all adds up to produce for the table in the end, and especially in the north we are well catered for in this regard. I don’t mean in terms of supermarket shelves, but rather in good oldfashioned markets which have enjoyed a renaissance in recent years. These farmers’ markets are scattered throughout Northland, in towns and villages, and attract a huge clientele seeking the best of fresh regional grown vegetables, specialty produce and locally made gourmet foods, along with herbs, flowers, plant seedlings, meat, eggs, bread, cheese, gourmet produce, preserves, pickles, jams, honey and baked goods. A huge attraction for both suburban and rural dwellers alike is the Whangarei Growers’ Market where along with a vast array of goodies to buy you can simply choose to stroll by and meet the locals, listen to some music, savour a freshly brewed coffee and soak up the ambience. A warm climate (this month’s early hail-storm notwithstanding) means the Whangarei market, like its myriad counterparts across the countryside, hosts a bountiful array of quality produce, from exotic subtropical fruits to traditional vegetables. While the New Zealand market experience may have been originally inspired by the traditional village markets of the United Kingdom and Europe, Whangarei’s offering has been up and operating and going from strength to strength since 1998.

People from across the globe are making their way to the small township of Maungatapere, outside of Whangarei, drawn by appeal of the Packard & Pioneer Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Packard automobiles. Packard was a highly sought-after American luxury automobile brand that was manufactured between 1899 and 1958, and is often referred to as the Rolls-Royce of American cars. The museum is a treasure, right here in the heart of Northland. The Museum’s unique automotive and engineering collection was amassed by the late Graeme Craw, who was intrigued and fascinated by the tough conditions of early colonial New Zealand. Craw recognised that the Packard automobile was one of the few cars made during that time that could hold up to severities of New Zealand’s difficult roads. In addition to the exclusive stockpile of Packards, the museum also features tractors, earthmovers, stationary engines, military vehicles, 65 vintage motorcycles, vintage trucks, early buses and lorries, traction engines, fire engines, important aircraft engines, horse-drawn wagons and gigs, even an

Better building starts with fundamentals We all know that to begin a job with a blank slate means ‘doing it from scratch’ or ‘building from the ground up’. But it’s a lesser known fact that both these sayings predate modern building techniques by thousands of years. The first refers to scraping away the topsoil to expose a solid, rocky foundation, while the second comes from the times when new buildings were often constructed on the foundations of earlier structures. To build ‘from the ground up’, then, is to be utterly sure of the quality of the job, leaving nothing to chance. These days it doesn’t take armies of peasant workers or teams of oxen to get the job done. Preparing a solid foundation is more often left to skilled excavator drivers, while heavy trucks bring in concrete to be pumped into place. Still, we can look back even further in terms of the fundamentals of a

build, to another meaning entirely of ‘starting from scratch’ — the ancient Greek and Roman practice of architects scratching initial designs onto a wax tablet with a stylus. These days it’s more likely to be a magnetic stylus and an iPad. From the very start, it’s always been a good idea to consult with professionals. Whether they are designers and engineers working with weights, measures and sketches, or the people you trust to turn the soil, pour the concrete, or add the finishing touches, the landowner’s version of doing things ‘from the ground up’ should always involve digging deeper into the credentials and qualifications of his build partners. For that very reason, we’ve gathered some of the best on these pages!

Inversion Therapy is rapidly gaining a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started seven years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option,” he said, “as long as I still could walk, there was hope.” Dave tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trip eight years

BACK or NECK PAIN? If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain then come along to our stand 684 at the Auckland Home & Living Show from the 10th to 14th September at the ASB Showgrounds. In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

ago, Dave discovered the Teeter HangUps. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that,” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible. I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief.” To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it,” he told me, “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. “We have

testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children,” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent.” What this means for the aging population is that it maintains the health of the brain as we all get older. INZ now have a division putting them into Industry as Back Pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production. Both Dave and Nancy will be attending the show, Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves, we let the tables do the talking,” he told me. Come along to the Auckland Home Show for a treatment, if you have completely resigned yourself to having Back Pain for the rest of your life, the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Reader’s Digest conducts an annual ‘New Zealand’s Most Trusted’ survey, with the aim of uncovering Kiwi attitudes on the most trustworthy professions, people and brands. The category was created last year as a response to the many issues that the building industry has faced in recent years and to acknowledge the importance of trust to the consumer when making purchase decisions. Son of the founder and current CEO Joe La Grouw Jnr says the win is a huge accolade for the company and gives huge pride to the Lockwood team and its network of builders and homeowners nationwide. “This is a fantastic acknowledgement of the values instilled in the Lockwood brand and the loyalty of Lockwood home-owners. “After six decades of designing great houses, so many people live in or have spent a part of their lives in a Lockwood home. Many of them have become passionate brand ambassadors and have voted for us. We are humbled and grateful for that accolade.” This award continues a long list of acknowledgements for Lockwood,

including a gold award at the Registered Master Builder House of the Year Awards 2013 and last year becoming the first company to achieve the new CodeMark for its patented complete wall system. “Lockwood is a precision engineered system that has been proven in all kinds of situations over 62 years, standing up exceptionally well to cyclones, earthquakes and all kinds of environmental challenges,” says La Grouw. “The CodeMark is not only a recognition of the company’s devotion to excellence, it is a challenge to us to keep improving our systems, our design and our relationship with our franchised builders throughout the country.”

Savings and sustainability through solar by Joanne Speechly

Hefty power bills, the onslaught of winter, and a desire to become more environmentally friendly gave Peria School the necessary motivation to seek out an alternative power source. Situated inland from Taipa in the Far North, the decile 2 school has only 31 students and yet it was forking out $900 per month for power. The Enviro School already recycles waste, provides children with a food

forest, takes care of the environment, and works to consciously reduce its carbon footprint, so principal Jason Tane began to investigate alternative power options, which would save money and also strengthen the school’s

Peria School in the Far North has become the first in the region to switch to solar power

environmental focus. Solar power appeared to be a viable option and Board of Trustees’ chairperson Leigh Jennings agreed. A sub-committee was formed to research the best options and teacher Mark Pickard used the experience as a learning opportunity for his senior class Te Rangi. All parties agreed that the most efficient and cost effective solution would be to install a solar power system. The school approached several solar power providers including Roy Maddox of SolarKing. “I couldn’t believe that a small school with 31 pupils had to pay so much per month on power,” said Roy. “The installation of solar power could immediately save the school 60 to 70% on their power bill — money that they could then spend on much more valuable learning tools.” Roy proposed that the school install a 10kW grid tied solar power system, which would save the school around $6,000 a year. To help get the project underway he donated $5,000 towards installation and $500 commission from any household in the Peria community

that also made the switch. Pub Charities came up with a $10,000 grant and the school’s solar power system was installed in June. Peria School marked the occasion with a community lunch and ribbon-cutting by Green Party coleader Russell Norman. A parent representative on the school’s board, Rebecca Tane, said the move was common sense. She said the school would enjoy free electricity and the solar power system would earn revenue by generating electricity for the national grid at weekends and in the summer holidays. BoT chair Ms Jennings added, “Our hope is that this project to will benefit not only our school, but the whole community. We want to lead the way and be the first school in the Far North to use solar panels to generate clean and renewable electricity for our tamariki.” As part of the Northland Regional Council Environmental Curriculum Awards, the school has named the project Tama-nui-i-te-ra: Sustainability through solar power. The name encompasses three important elements — solar energy, sustainability and biculturalism.

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Stress and tracks Last month I showed you some evidence that stones are not the likely culprit of making cows lame. Coming back to my original question where I asked to be shown some real evidence of stones being a cause of haemorrhage — well, I still haven’t been convinced. I am thinking up ways to show more evidence to prove my point and I will keep you informed on that one, so stay tuned. If stones are not the cause of the bruising, why does it make a difference if we improve our tracks? Most farmers tell me that after they have spent money on their tracks they have less lame cows. It is also scientifically shown that bad tracks and bad animal handling increase lameness. That seems pretty good evidence that stones are the culprit of bruises. Or does it? I don’t believe so. There is more to tracks than the stones on them. Like I said in an earlier article, I believe that the main contributors to lameness in New Zealand are nutrition and stress. So how can a bad track cause stress on cows? Well, there are a few things that I can think of. Firstly, if cows don’t flow well because of bad tracks then the likelihood for pushing cows is greater. I know you don’t have to have bad tracks to push cows, and many of you have had experience with people who push cows even on good tracks, but pushing does cause stress. Cows are ‘flight’ animals — their instinct tells them to run from trouble. Can you imagine what it must be like for a cow when they can’t get away fast enough? That is stress. Secondly, another stress is caused by not getting enough resting time. No, I am not suggesting resting areas along the tracks with an umbrella and a café. I am

saying that when the tracks are bad, the cow flow is slower. This means that cows take longer to commute to and from the cow shed and as a consequence will spend less time in the paddock resulting in less time for laying down and resting. It is scientifically proven that there is a strong correlation between resting time and lameness. Just look at a well fed herd in the paddock. What are the cows doing? They graze, lie down, drink water or socialise. Look at cows on the track or in a holding yard. What are they doing? They are walking for long periods of time and standing still in the yard. Both of those behaviours are unnatural for cows to do for the length of time that we force them to do it. That is stress. So, if we improve the tracks, we improve the cow flow, resulting in more resting time. For example, if you could take 10 minutes off each walk then you have

given the cows 40 minutes more each day for lying down, because cows walk four times a day if you are milking them twice a day. Of course, this is not the only reason why we have lame cows, but it is certainly an important factor.

Benefits of sustainable farming

by Rachel Sorley, Environmental Fertilisers

Farms have been getting a bit of ‘bad’ press lately for water quality. The status of freshwater is a good gauge of the overall environmental condition of a country because freshwaters unsurprisingly assimilate most of the impacts occurring on land. According to freshwater ecologist, Dr Mike Joy, in 2011, ‘nitrogen fertiliser use had risen by 700% in a decade’, ‘35% of native species are threatened’ and ‘almost all river quality monitoring sites show a worsening trend. 43% of them regularly fail to meet bathing standards. Almost half our lakes are polluted by excess nutrients’. We certainly haven’t had a 700% increase in agricultural production in this time. Synthetic fertilisers do nothing to maintain healthy soil structure or build soil microbial activity — in fact they burn the carbon in your soil. Meaning there is less to hold on to nutrients (hence the grim water quality picture painted above) or

water (hence more droughts in summer or increased flooding during storms). EF Bio-Rocket helps farmers grow grass while they are transitioning to more sustainable farming practices (such as using clover to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere). EF Bio-Rocket contains both ammonium and nitrate forms of nitrogen (a urea alternative) and carbon to prevent them from being leached during high rainfall events. Adding extra carbon, such as EF Soluble Humates or Raw Humates helps to absorb nitrogen from animal urine — preventing this valuable nitrogen being lost from the system to pollute rivers and lakes.

In the Shed by Megan Fowlie

You’ll probably know Tru-Test for weighing, milk meters and fencing. We’ve now moved further into the dairy space with MilkHub Dairy Automation and DTS Milk Cooling and Tank Solutions. We are pleased to introduce our regular column ‘In the Shed’ with Tru-Test. Stepping into the shed as a youngster, milking machines, calving and even treatments came a long time before the mysteries of the plant room. If the subdued response to the MPI’s impending changes on milk refrigeration and pre-cooling is anything to go by, many farmers may have had the same sense of trepidation. In fairness there is another 24 months till proposed regulations are enforced. While glycol offers that snapcooling, there are some issues to consider. Energy consumption is likely to be high and if you already have fluctuating power issues at milking time, more draw on the

current is not going to do you any favours. Heat transfer issues can also place pressure on some milk plate coolers. Glycol residue in your bulk milk tank is frowned upon, so it would be prudent to do your homework and get as much free advice as possible. These extra costs are often overlooked when assessing the different options. Other options include ice banks, water chillers and even using an existing colostrum storage vat in only the hottest months. Every farm is different, and there is not one refrigeration company in New Zealand that charges for advice. One thing is for certain, doing nothing is not an option.

Servicing on-farm refrigeration in Northland Whakapara local, Shane Storey has been appointed Northland Area Sales Manager for Tru-Test DTS Milk Cooling and Tank Solutions covering from Auckland to Cape Reinga. His role leverages 40 years’ experience in the refrigeration trade and taps into his local knowledge of Northland and the farming industry. “Being a local and living rurally in Northland makes for a successful life,” says Shane. “It has allowed me to raise a family, build a business and train young people in the trade. Now, with Tru-Test, I am keen to share my knowledge of dairy refrigeration with the farming community.”

Soil Matters with Peter Burton What old cars and urea have in common My love of cars and enjoyment of driving stems from the exquisite sense of freedom achieved as a result of purchasing my own vehicle as a teenager. Summers of picking up hay provided sufficient money for the restrictions of push bikes and unreliable bus services to be released. At that time a new car entering the neighbourhood was a special event, but it was the smell that indelibly etched itself into the memory. New cars of 50 years ago had a unique pungency of fresh polish, new rubber, and hot oil — quite unlike any today. As a result I’ve never wanted to accept that oil is a finite resource and my support of offshore drilling is purely emotive and selfish. Logic provides a different perspective but emotion always wins. Emotion is at the base of every action, logic is simply the tool used to justify the decision, and so it is with the use of fertiliser nitrogen. The best long-term data shows that annual pasture production was significantly higher in the years prior to the widespread regular applications of nitrogen, particularly urea. However there is now a second generation of farmers who believes their ability to grow sufficient pasture relies on its regular application.

Recently a farmer becoming increasingly concerned at where the discussion on its use was heading tried to end the session by saying that he didn’t care what the question was the answer was ‘more nitrogen’. But what if the answer to generating more pasture is ‘less nitrogen’ or ultimately ‘no nitrogen’? The measures from properties using CalciZest/DoloZest based total nutrient programmes over the last 10 years clearly show more pasture is grown than on properties using comparative conventional fertiliser nitrogen driven programmes. The cost is less and the increase has always been immediate. The growth is equally dependent on nitrogen but it’s now fixed direct from the atmosphere mostly via clovers and stored in humus ready for use as required. Because feed quality is higher, fewer kilograms of dry matter are required to produce a kilogram of milk solids. Fewer animals are required to achieve targeted production reducing the pressure on people, cow sheds, races, and water systems.

Animal health costs are markedly lower and there are numerous properties now where empty rates are 10% or lower, and intervention with penicillin is seldom required. With greatly reduced stress on operators family times become more relaxed. Clients spoken with recently cited the knowledge that they already had the ability to farm under the pending nitrogen regulations as a genuine positive. These overseer-based regulations are designed to reduce animal numbers as cow urine is considered to be the greatest contributor to excess Nitrate-N leaking below the root zone of plants and less

cows means less urine. The model will doubtless be refined over time as data that shows the concentration of urea in urine can be markedly influenced by the diet of the animal. In the short term reducing animal numbers will help balance the equation. There’s profit to be made from producing a genuine 1000kgMS/ha from pasture alone. An increasing number of ESI clients are achieving this and with per cow production around 500kgMS a high level of per hectare production is achievable within the regulations. RURAL WHEELS

Green machine dominates the dirt by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to big air and high speed off-road action, few combinations of names stand out like Kawasaki and Monster Energy. The combo come together in the form of an internationally dominant motocross team, and it’s not just their matching bright green livery which has lit up tracks since the inception of this alliance. The successes of the Monster Energy Kawasaki team comes down in no small part to the skill of riders like Blake Baggett, Dean Wilson and Justin Hill. But there’s a huge investment in engineering and power at their command each time they race — and now the next generation of Kawasaki’s track-proven tech is being offered to the Kiwi market. First out of the blocks is an evolution of a model which first saw the light of day in 2008, come roaring out of Kawasaki’s back-room development labs to critical and rider acclaim. The KLX450 boasted a lightweight 449cc single cylinder four stroke engine mounted in a well-balanced frame, and its overall performance capabilities made its ‘F’ designated variant a favourite on the track. At the same time, Kawasaki developed an ‘R’ model, an enduro-spec alternative which blends the hard-core moto elements of the KLX450F with a little practicality. For 2015 they have re-imagined this popular enduro bike, releasing the new KLX450R early — in fact, it’s here already! The new member of the KLX family has electric start, a powerful headlight

and taillight, and digital instruments, everything to make it road legal. It’s learner approved too, making it a nice stepping stone for motocross riders to get into some highway action. Then again, this is not simply a frugal way to commute. The KLX is a true enduro machine, retaining the narrow, easy to handle frame, high ground clearance and torquey gearing of a real off-roader. So, perfectly legal to nip down to the shops or into work in the morning, but with the chops to carve up the trails

Putting the passenger first by Andy Bryenton

There’s a sense with some UTV off-roaders on the market that one feature alone has been chosen as the engineering goal of the exercise. Whether it’s simply providing the most power, or the greatest speed, or the biggest towing capacity, this kind of arms race can end up very much like the one being waged by the ‘big three’ German car makers for maximum horsepower. That’s why the Yamaha Viking is proving so popular. It’s not focussed on simply stump-pulling torque or flatout speed. Yamaha’s engineers have taken it back to first principles, making everything about the new Viking centre on the driver and passengers. That’s passengers, plural, because one of the first things Yamaha realised was that many jobs around the farm need more than two pairs of hands. With three seats in line at the centre of the chassis and frame, the Viking builds out from the concept of safety, utility and comfort for the crew on board. This naturally led to the development team choosing a high ground clearance double wishbone front and rear suspension setup, tuned for the smoothest ride they could achieve over the harshest terrain they could find. Good thing too — because Yamaha’s engine choice has

made sure that despite not being all about big figures, the Viking still packs a punch. Yamaha have drawn on their motorcycle building experience, installing a big, water cooled four stroke single cylinder in the Viking. This 686cc mill provides an excellent power and torque curve, assisting in smooth handling . More importantly perhaps, the big one-pot engine allows accurate and natural-feeling engine braking, a safety feature in its own right. The choice of a large capacity one cylinder motor also means bags of pulling power, giving the Viking over 650kg towing capacity and nearly 300kg on the tray. By going back to basics, and building the new Viking around the needs of the driver and passengers, Yamaha may not have re-invented the wheel. But they
