Industry body DairyNZ is offering one-on-one support to help dairy farmers grow and harvest an extra tonne of pasture. If this is achieved the average operator could make an extra $30,000 of milk income in the lead up to Christmas. Farmers nationwide can register for a visit from a DairyNZ expert who will review their early spring grazing management, talk through a plan and, if needed, give guidance on ‘where to next’. DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle says the visits will help farmers gauge whether they are on track during the critical spring period — a high pressure time exacerbated by the low milk price. “Analysis shows, that if the amount of pasture eaten is increased by one tonne of dry matter per hectare -DM/ha- an extra 30-40 cents of milk income per kilogram of milksolids can be generated, by either reducing the need to source feed off the farm or increasing milk production with the same inputs,” says Mr Mackle. “In the peak milk period between calving and Christmas that could mean an extra $30,000 more cash in the budget for the average farm business. Pasture management offers the opportunity to improve returns by increasing income without increasing costs. “Grass has already been paid for and growing and utilising it well has always given the New Zealand farmers an advantage. It makes sense to focus on this area and minimise the need for bought-in feed.” The visits will run throughout August. Tim recognises this is a busy time for farmers hence the on-farm visits. “We wouldn’t be doing this unless we knew it could make a difference. Good early spring grazing management provides a platform for capturing this additional one tonne of dry matter per hectare before Christmas. “Accurate feed allocation in spring will ensure cows are adequately fed with the right rotation length and that average pasture covers will be achieved at balance date-when feed supply equals feed demand. “Farmers have asked us for more support in this area of their decisionmaking and we’ve responded by

One of DairyNZ consulting officers Jaimee Morgan with dairy farmer James King. DairyNZ are conducting one-on-one visits throughout August

putting more people into the field for these visits.” Tim says even the best pasture managers are sometimes uncertain whether they have got it right. “It can really help to get that second opinion and have some peace of mind on that front. You can start to question whether you have made the right calls. Are you under feeding the cows or leaving too much pasture behind? “If we find a plan needs to be updated or improved upon during our visits, we’ll connect dairy farmers with other rural professionals to get that advice quickly if we need to.” The visits are not designed to replace comprehensive feed management services already provided by farm consultants to many dairy farmers. The one-on-one visits are part of DairyNZ’s Tactics campaign, designed to help farmers cope with the low milk price, recover faster and build resilience. Dairy farmers can register for their one-on-one visit, funded through the milksolids levy, at dairynz.co.nz/visit. Spaces are limited so farmers are urged to book in early.

Clarifying health and safety reform Beef and Lamb New Zealand says key changes to the health and safety reform bill relating to the rural sector go a long way to clarifying the responsibilities of farmers towards employees and visitors to their farms. BLNZ chairman James Parsons said the organisation jointly with Federated Farmers and DairyNZ, had been vocal on behalf of farmers in advocating for sensible rules. It was good to see the transport and industrial relations select committee process working and acknowledging farmer concerns. “While farmers are generally welcoming visitors to their farms, the proposed health and safety regime was threatening to expose them to significant liability for events outside their control. It is now clear that recreational users coming on to farmland are responsible for their own safety. This includes duck shooters, hunters, mountain bikers, anglers and so on. “The changes also recognise that the family home is excluded as part of the workplace. “These changes recognise the unique features of farms as workplaces and homes for rural families, and apply good common sense to the issue of improving safety on-farm.” Mr Parsons said the members of the select committee were to be congratulated for taking the time to understand the issues and come up with a pragmatic response. “There are

still a number of issues that need to be resolved to further clarify responsibilities and to improve on-farm safety while taking into account the practicalities of modern day farming. We will keep working with government and officials to seek a workable outcome,” said Mr Parsons. “Some of

these aspects fall within the regulations as opposed to the legislation. Passengers being carried safely on quad bikes are one such area which we still haven’t resolved with WorkSafe. It is important that farmers continue to make their views known as the regulations are being drafted up.”

MINIATURES

in matakohe BY AYLA MILLER

AFTER TWO CONSECUTIVE WET AND MUDDY NORTHLAND WINTERS, JANET POOLE’S HUSBAND BECAME FRUSTRATED ABOUT THE MESS HIS HEREFORD CATTLE WERE MAKING OF THE PADDOCKS, SO THEY DECIDED TO BREED MINIATURE HEREFORDS AS WELL ON THEIR RIVERLANDS FARM IN MATAKOHE.

M

“

y husband said that each hoof print must contain at least a litre of water so I suggested looking into Miniature Herefords which are simply a smaller

replica of the regular Hereford, said Janet. Following some research, she discovered there was a New Zealand Miniature Hereford Breeders’ Group and

set about purchasing two in-calf cows and two yearling heifers in October, 2009. Her small cattle are under the name Riverlets. As luck would have it, by that Christmas she had seven Miniature Herefords. One of the animals had given birth to twins. “They were the first recorded twins born in the Southern Hemisphere, she says and so a new retirement business was born. Gradually over time Janet bred and bought in more animals and currently has forty in total, including twenty breeding cows and four herd sires. Like their larger cousins, these are beef cattle and could be a good source of meat for restaurants which are looking

for smaller, whole cuts, to reduce their preparation costs. “We haven’t eaten any of my stock ourselves, but have heard it is very nice. Miniature Herefords are half to twothirds the size of the regular Herefords with shorter leg and neck bones and have the same docile nature. The perfect animal will have similar colouring with a white face, white lower legs and a white blaze along the neck. Herefords are crossed with other breeds, predominantly Angus or Friesian, to produce progeny with what is known as ‘the white face advantage’ in that they tend to grow on more quickly than other breeds. Farmers can feed two or three miniatures on the same amount as

JANET POOLE AND A MINIATURE HEREFORD CALF it takes to feed one regular Hereford and they are not so hard on paddocks and facilities. They can even be worked in sheep yards, are easy to train and ideal for young people to show. With the increase in lifestyle blocks, Janet believes there will be a greater demand for these smaller animals in the future. In New Zealand there are only about 200 Miniature Herefords which makes for a limited gene pool and there is a lack of polled animals. Importing new genetics is expensive, so in 2010 Janet looked into the possibility of breeding a New Zealand line of polled Miniatures - a genetic trait meaning without horns or scurs. Using the same system as in the United States and Australia she

Makers of Biological Fertilisers

selected twenty smaller regular polled heifers from her husband’s herd and went back ten generations looking for horns or scurs. These were narrowed down to five which were then mated with a Miniature Hereford bull. Continuing with this programme so far her plan has been successful with 100% polled calves produced over several years of breeding. “I’ve been around stock my whole life,” she says, “and I’ve always been fascinated with genetics. I started breeding guinea pigs first then moved on to cats”. Eventually she met her husband who had a herd of regular Herefords and naturally progressed to bigger things. She finds breeding these animals fascinating and says, “It is exciting to see how the calves turn out each spring.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

FROM FARM TO FAME BY AYLA MILLER

From a sheep farm in Dargaville to the sunny streets of California, CEO of Wrightspeed Ian Wright, has come a long way from being a young country lad who wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after high school.

B

orn in Te Kopuru, Ian lived in Dargaville from 1955 until 1980 when he moved to Sydney and studied electrical engineering in New South Wales. “When I was a kid in high school I didn’t know what I wanted to do. We had a careers advisor and he suggested I become an electrician so I met with a local guy but I decided that wasn’t really for me. I’d never met anyone who was an engineer. “Later I got into electronics, fell in love with circuit design, and seemed to have an intuition for it.”

Years later Ian met an old neighbour at a party who told him about an electric sports car. After 20 minutes of driving it, going from 0-60km/h in three seconds, he was sure that this was the future of engineering. The motivation for creating the Powertrain stemmed from his lifelong interest in cars. “I was interested in efficiency and something that is economically viable. I saw that it actually worked. “Growing up on a farm teaches you self reliance. When I was younger we didn’t even have electricity. I still

“I was interested in efficiency and something that is economically viable. I saw that it actually worked.” have the old engine that drove our shearing shed. “We always drew a line between the country kids and the townies. The townies weren’t so able to fix things that broke.” Like so many high school students Ian remembers not knowing what career options were available to him. “These days I do go to schools to do a bit of show and tell, so students can see what they can do if they study maths and science.” As a fledgling company Wrightspeed put all it’s energy into creating one thing and creating it well. “For all start up companies you have to focus on the customer base. This is the hardest part so you have to be focussed on one project.” For other inventors, Ian suggests it is being able to demonstrate to investors that your product actually works to secure that initial interest.

“I built a really fast racing car and took prospective investors for a ride in it. Years later when I see them, they still remember that ride. I think if you have something to actually show people and if you can show people that it really works, you will gain their support. You have to think about it from an investor’s point of view and show them how it will make them money. “There is also a bit of persistence or sheer bloody mindedness as my wife would call it.” There has been talk about plans to bring the Powertrain to New Zealand and Ian recently had a visit from the Minister of Transport Simon Bridges to discuss how the Powertrain can help back home. “I think it will be of major benefit to New Zealand. You import a lot of petroleum which puts you at the mercy of other geopolitical events.” Despite adapting to the American ways, he still believes there is something about the Kiwi nature that fostered his innovations. “New Zealand does produce quite a few engineers. It’s that number eight fencing wire ingenuity. We can turn that kind of ability around to work for us. I was really proud to watch the America’s Cup boat which some guy in Warkworth designed, so we have some really good innovative engineering which I think comes from growing up on farms. The Kiwi ingenuity thing is really not to be sniffed at.”

right,” said Matt. “Everyone has their own ideas and what they want to do so this was the easiest way to achieve our own farming styles.” Matt chooses romney and dorset down sheep because he says dorset down sheep are early maturers. He breeds rams to sell and they are a fast growing meaty breed of sheep and the romney is a great dual purpose animal due to the wool and the meat as well. He has started using 5K on the Romney Rams which is using their DNA profile to find their genetic traits. “I am starting to cross texel over them to get an even bigger, meatier sheep. It is a breed that came in from Europe around 1990 so are relatively new to the country. We have had romneys for many years. The texel are the best converters of grass to meat and good for productivity. “As a breeder everything is recorded so the parenthood of all the sheep is known. At mating time you have a lot of different mobs and you need to record each lamb with which ewe. At lambing I put a brass tag in the lamb’s ears to identify the mother and father. “We have a series of weights to record at weaning, autumn and winter. All animals are eye muscle scanned. This is the loin fillet-rib eye area, measuring the width and length and the amount of fat that is there on the lamb. We need to get the balance right to find out which rams are producing the best meat progeny. “With the romneys I do a facial eczema test on them and am trying to breed resistance to the condition. In the North Island especially you need to be careful of eczema — it is the humid muggy weather which creates the conditions for it.” The rams are ready for sale from December onwards once the top rams he has decided to keep are selected. “Having the angus stock as well means they can clean up the kikuyu grass and other things. They clean up the paddocks for the sheep and they do well on rougher pasture. They are a hardy breed and are good for beef.” From September onwards he shears for small or lifestyle block owners. “I can shear from 1 to 50 sheep for others. It gets pretty hectic through to

January and I have to juggle with the farm but it does bring in that little bit extra income. “Living 30 minutes from Auckland works well as there are lots of lifestyle blocks around the city. I drench animals, dock lambs, trim feet and anything else they may need. I advise on anything from how many head of sheep could be carried on the land to the age of the sheep they may have. “I think small or lifestyle block owners should always

do their research and ask someone, don’t believe everything you read as sometimes the information may not be accurate, or there may be more to a situation than meets the eye. “Andrea has her own office job and works from home. This works well with the girls and we all enjoy the farm lifestyle. They especially love having a pet lamb. They have one every year and they enjoy life on the land and the experiences it brings.”

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

ADVERTORIAL

New product! ET250 Fertiliser with pest deterrent by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

ET250 is a new-age BioGro certified liquid spray designed to deter pests and disease. In the realm of nature, pest and disease are part of Mother Nature’s plan to keep plants healthy. When plants become sick, they resonate at a frequency that attracts pest and disease, who basically take a plant out, so that it does not propagate and weaken the species. With all the chemicals we have used over the last 50 years, we have reached a point where pest and disease have become immune to the chemical sprays, indicating that nature is stronger than chemicals. At Agrissentials we understand the nature of pest and disease and the job they do. To us there is no point in trying to eradicate pest and disease as they are part and parcel of the natural system. The ultimate answer to pest and disease problems is to get your plants on a multi-mineral, microbial rich diet and I know a fertiliser company that supplies exactly that. With a full array of

minerals the plant will become healthy and resonate at a frequency that pest and disease are not interested in. The main minerals here are the trace elements, which are the building blocks of the plant’s immune system, minerals such as iron, manganese, boron, copper, zinc, cobalt, molybdenum, selenium and chromium all essential for plant health. As Rachel Hunter once stated “it won’t happen overnight but it will happen, so Agrissentials have produced this amazing BioGro certified, completely natural pest repellent to keep the vines, orchards and pastures pest free while the plants are strengthening up their immune systems. The chemical age we have come through has not done life, in general, any favours. In actual fact it has not only caused health problems to plants,

animals and people, but has been unable to control pest, diseases and weed problems. The basic reason why chemicals have not been able to control pest, disease and weed problems is that these three natural control agents are part and parcel of nature’s checks and balances ensuring that life continues on. In reality pest, disease and weed problems indicate mineral deficiency; correct the mineral deficiency and health will ensue. Through the use of synthetic fertilisers and chemical sprays we have demineralised and destroyed the water retention quality of our soils, which in turn has put pressure on our farmers and our environment. The sooner we leave the chemical age and begin working with mother nature and looking after the free capital she provides like soil, atmospheric minerals, water, sunlight, health and vitality, the easier farming will become. So, while you transit away from chemicals and begin working alongside Mother Nature, Agrissentials can help you through that period with our multi mineral microbial rich fertilisers, restoring and remineralising your top soil for better health, better food,

better production, a better farm and a better environment. If you’re having trouble with pest and disease, don’t forget to check out our ET250, a great natural pest repellent, BioGro certified, with no harmful effects. The exhibit resides in the old dairy factory building at Maungatapere and was compiled over 60 years by the late collector Graeme Craw who was interested in the industrial revolution and the evolution of motor cars. This collection pays tribute to the Packard motor car which Mr Craw was very fond of for their precision, engineering and aesthetics. Mr Craw became enamoured with the Packard’s quality and practicality on New Zealand roads during his apprenticeship with Dominion Motors in Auckland. These days the museum is under his son Fenton Craw’s watchful eye. After

its conception in Anawhata during the late 60s, the collection moved North in 1987 when Graeme Craw bought a farm just out of Maungatapere which Fenton and his wife now run. “My father’s main goal was to preserve the history,” said Mr Craw. “He was very keen on the industrial revolution. He believed it was a god-given thing and without it, the world would have had difficulty feeding itself. He had the knowledge and perception to know when to save something when everyone else was throwing it away. My father was one of the first collectors to have one line of vehicles. He lined them all up to show how they changed over time and to show how the engineering abilities improved. I think

Dad would be chuffed to see how the collection is kept today.” Now Fenton is continuing this legacy, believing it is important to teach the younger generation about this part of history as ‘we really do live in a throwaway world’. He says he still is amazed by what he can learn from people who come through on the tours and enjoys hearing how they are connected with the different types of machines. “Sometimes people will have learnt to drive in a similar car, or their father had a similar piece of machinery when they were a child.” As for what we will be preserving over the next generation, he is unsure. “Things aren’t made like they used to be.”

Spotlight on Whangarei A series of solutions August 1897

As the northernmost city known for its natural beauty, sandy beaches and pioneering history, Whangarei offers a variety of services to suit all your needs from farming, health and more. For the farmers and lifestyle block owners, call on Pat’s Healing Centre. Director of Pat’s Healing Centre, Pat Hunter, is a fully qualified practitioner of Medical Herbalism, Homoeopathy and Naturopathy for human patients with 29 years experience. She also has the knowledge to assist animals and these products are available in her clinic, shop and online for dogs, cats, horses, cows and other animals. After opening Pat’s Healing Centre in Waipu in 1995, the practice has grown over the years, treating animal and human patients and she is often called on to deal with difficult cases that others cannot find solutions for. “I have a good relationship with our local veterinary clinic and a few years ago they asked me if I would put together a selection of products for them to use in their clinic and to sell over the counter. Then it seemed an obvious extension to offer these products on my website,” she says. If it is your teeth that need seeing to Dental Laser Centre can help. Owner Neil Johnson has more than 30 years of experience in the industry and purchased the clinic in 1988. He is passionate about caring for Northlands smiles and has a keen and highly skilled team of professionals to help him.

Showcasing farming success

Soon the country’s most sustainable farmers will have their efforts judged during the 2016 Ballance Farm Environment Awards with entries opening on August 1. The awards endeavour to showcase the work of those farming in a way that is environmentally, economically and socially sustainable and promote best-practice land management. Facilitated by the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust, the awards are open to all farming and horticultural types. The 2016 awards will be held in 11 regions, along with the Auckland region for the first time. NZFE Trust national judging co-ordinator Andrea Hanna encourages every farmer, including orchardists, vegetable growers and viticulturists to enter. “Most people enter because they want high quality feedback on how their farming operation stacks up in terms of environmental and economic sustainability,” she says. She says the awards show that good environmental practices and good business management go hand in hand and the competition is an opportunity for farmers

to learn how to improve their profitability and environmental management. “It’s not just targeted at top farmers. Every farmer should take the opportunity to enter.” As the awards cover a wide range of categories, farmers doing well in one area have a chance at taking home a category award. Supreme winners from each region are honoured at NZFE Trust’s annual Sustainability Showcase, where the prestigious Gordon Stephenson trophy is presented to a National Winner. The 2015 National Winner title went to John and Catherine Ford of the Bay of Plenty who encourage

all farmers to enter the 2016 competition. “We need to promote our industry by providing examples of the things farmers are doing to care for the environment,” says Mr Ford. “We think every farmer will get something out of being involved in the Ballance Farm Environment Awards. It gives you a huge confidence boost when the judges say you are doing a good job. If you are not on the right track, the judges will give you direction on how to get there.” Entering is free and can be done by filling out a form online at www.bfea.org.nz or these can be mailed to entrants.

When everything is new You have the section and now it is time to build your home — a milestone in anyone’s life. finishes, hardware and appliances. The floor plan is probably your greatest planning tool and includes most of the critical dimensions and specs needed to build the home. They act as a kind of road map of your home, showing how the different spaces relate to each other. Many plans will include the electrical elements — lights and plugs etc. An overhead look at cabinets, plumbing and appliances can be provided here, helping you in turn to plan furnishings and colours. M1136 PROMO 06/15

But where do you start? Once you have your architects or building company lined up, the first step is a blueprint. A plan on paper, or more likely than not in today’s world, on a computer screen. Now, with the fast-paced world we live in, people are getting used to the convenience of digital formats, allowing them to be quickly delivered by email. These house plans will usually concentrate on the architecture and the building itself and will not usually specify interior finishes. Part of the fun of building a new home is choosing those

When you are heading into a new home, it’s important to spread the word. Be sure to file change of address forms with the post office and notify your insurance company. Look into getting electricity, internet and gas hooked up if it isn’t already so you know who your providers are. If your new house is not already equipped with a security system, you may want to consider setting one up. This is the time to make sure you know where the electrical circuit breakers, water cutoff valves and other key aspects of your home are located and how to operate them.

So then it is time for the final touches, the drapes, and carpets and the furniture. Often a new home means new appliances and furniture, and a new start. After the final builder’s handover, you’ll have a new set of keys and a new life to live. Of course it doesn’t end there. While under construction you dwelling place will have occupied all your attention. Once inside, there’s the matter of the outside area, perhaps a garden, a patio, a pergola. The list of ongoing jobs will no doubt keep the wonder alive for some time to come. bb aa a rr nn nn ssss bb b haa errr d n s ssss hh hh eeee dddd sssss s a r a g e gg a r a g e g g a r a g e gg aa rr aa gg ee sssssa

New hope for long-term back pain sufferers

After nearly eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option,” he said, “as long as I could still walk, there was hope.” Dave tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that,” he said. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief.” To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free. “I couldn’t believe it,” Dave said. “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard

of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and has seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. “We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children,” said Dave. “The blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent.” What this means for the aging population is that it maintains the health of the brain as we all get older. INZ now have a division putting them into industry as back pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production. Both Dave and Nancy will be attending the shows. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves.

“Most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less,” he said. Come along to one of the shows for a treatment, if you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

TESTIMONIAL DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two; I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been inverting for seven years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER INVERSION TABLE WORKS. The Teeter Inversion Table works on three levels: Discs, Muscles and Posture. Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to dehydrate. Dehydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the dehydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life. Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls the muscles to where they want to be. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and slowly come back into alignment, using the table daily, at least once a day, does not allow the memory to pull the muscles out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is not rocket science, it is just pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself resulting in a far healthier life. If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of the shows, you have nothing to lose and the chances are a lot to gain.

BACK or NECK PAIN? If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain then come along to: Auckland Home Show 9-13 September ASB Show Grounds, Greenlane, or the Northland Home Show 25 - 27 September, Kensington Stadium Whangarei. If you can’t make it to EITHER Show, we will be coming to you with our own shows: Dargaville Community Centre 22-23 August 10am–4pm. Owera Community Church 19th September 8am–5pm. In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. After eight years in NZ there are now thousands of people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts that these really do work. If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want to age healthily, bring this ad along for a free 10 minute treatment. “I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised!”

With 24 years experience in the industr y, owner/operator Jason Williamson knows what customers want. The business started with a single spreader purchased by Jason in 1991. “I had just finished doing a panel beating apprenticeship when my father suggested I buy a fertiliser spreader.” From there the business grew and now consists of four bulk trucks, two diggers and a bulldozer, carting limestone, metal, palm kernel and any other bulk products. Jason is also the owner/operator of Spreading Northland Ltd which operate five fertiliser spreaders. “We offer a good, reliable, efficient service and we have good drivers that manage the client’s needs. We also keep in contact with our clients, when they are ready for palm kernel extract, we can place the order and schedule the delivery for them, to save a bit of hassle for the farmer,” says Jason. The company has a range of different trucks for different jobs and the team is made up of ten experienced staff offering their services all over Northland. In between all the hard work, Jason says he does have time to enjoy himself. “I enjoy going out and seeing something different every day, working

ADVERTORIAL

For all rainwater solutions When building new or simply renovating, it really does pay to consult with experts. Weatherproofing is a critical element in maintaining the value of your home and a vital part of this is good rainwater management. Once achieved, dampness in the home is also reduced, resulting in a drier and healthier environment. Simply put — spouting needs to first and foremost, drain the water from your roof and channel it away. When selecting the right rainwater solution for your home, it is important to consider factors such as environment, roof capacity and appearance of the spouting. Experienced assessment of unique environmental influences is vital when considering your material selection. Correct choices made at this stage will

add years to the life of your spouting and save you money in the long term. Ensure that your roof area is matched to the appropriate size and capacity spouting and downpipes. This will facilitate the most efficient flow of water. For the perfect look in either a contemporary or character finish, choice of spouting profile will be a key decision. Whether your main concern is collecting rainwater, ensuring your home is dry and healthy or creating the perfect look, selecting the right rainwater system will guarantee the right outcome. As a retired professional diver with over

25 years of diving experience and 15 years as a dive technician, Andre has turned what once was a hobby into a profession. It is this level of experience in the field and the depth of his knowledge that makes Bay of Islands Gas / A to Z Diving the place to go. “Tips and consultations are free and you can save yourself a lot of time and money just taking your problem to a technician specialised in the job, and with the correct tools. Try something new, try something small, try something local — big is not always the best,” he says. “Thinking outside of the box — whether it be servicing a set of dive gear that no one can fix or creating a solution that works and is legal — I enjoy the challenge,” says Andre.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

DAIRY

Taking advantage of the sunshine I have just got back from a few weeks holiday in Scotland and Cornwall, where I was interested to see fields of wheat and barley being grown. The temperatures were not hot, considering it is summer there (the highest was around 22°C (once or twice) and the lowest was 11°C — which was bitterly cold). So it wasn’t temperature that they were using to grow the crops, but the long daylight hours — the sun did not set until 10.30–11pm at night. How can you take advantage of the relatively dry winter Northland is having to increase the growth of your crops or grass? The limiting factor is often how much nitrogen is available for the plants to grow at their optimum. As I’ve said in the past, applying nitrogen from a bag (water-soluble forms) creates smaller plant root systems and soil biology populations. Less soil biology results in further bagged nitrogen being needed to keep up productivity. However, research carried out by Kansas State University in 2002, found that adding water soluble calcium (such as calcium ammonium nitrate or calcium nitrate) to nitrogen

fertilisers like urea produced the highest yields and the highest nitrogen fertiliser efficiency. This is because the soluble calcium reduces the ammonia volatilisation (nitrogen lost to the air). New Zealand university trials also found a 30–40% reduction in ammonia volatilisation (loss to air) and a 35– 40% reduction in nitrate leaching (loss to groundwater) when soluble humate granules were mixed with nitrogen fertilisers. Years ago, Environmental Fertilisers used this research and produced BioRocket, a solid fertiliser that contains both forms of nitrogen for the plant (ammonium and nitrate). In the shed with Megan Fowlie Knowing the good, bad and ugly Dairy farmers are calling for industry to be straight up with them about the impact of fluctuating global milk powder prices to the sector and to their forecast payout. They want early warning signals and are demanding more reliable information; information which is direct and not dressed up. They want clarity. Why? Because good clear timely information allows people to act with some level of certainty about present and future conditions. It gives a clearer line of sight. Note though, it is not always easy to be the messenger particularly when the implications are far reaching for the sector. One organisation that has stepped up to tackle a difficult problem head on is the New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA). They’ve put out a bold rallying cry for New Zealand Inc to be non-reliant on antibiotics for the treatment and well-being of animals by 2030. Why? Because the World Health Organisation predicts that antibiotic resistance, in both human and animal populations, will lead to the greatest health crisis of the 21 Century. NZVA’s announcement may not be warmly

embraced by all parties. Nevertheless it is 100% the right thing to do. Naming the problem and the goal, is the first step in addressing one and achieving the other. For NZ Inc to be substantially nonreliant on antibiotics in 15 years’ time will require a mindset change in the industry and a more measured, managed and preventative focus for animal health and welfare across the farming sector. While there are very good guidelines in New Zealand around prescribing, growing antibiotic resistance has implications for farmers, breeders, vets, pharmaceutical companies, technology manufacturers and others. In the end, concerted effort towards this goal will help strengthen the resilience of our animals and our economy. So, next time your vet is on farm, talk to them about what is happening in the antibiotics space, why they do what they do and options for prevention and good practice.

Refrigeration with Ashton

ON THE FARM

This month I am focusing on the Alderton brothers rotary milking shed built in 1983 for 400 – 500 cows at Pakaraka. One of the concerns they had with their old shed was the number of grades experienced. Most of these were due to the lack of pre-cooling water and the water temperature with the milk entering the vat at very high temperatures. Water sources were checked for availability and the temperature. The milk would enter the vat at 25 –26 degrees celsius so they decided to install a water chiller. The water is used in the second stage of the milk plate heat exchanger and stored in a concrete tank buried alongside the cowshed. The water was chilled to 15 degrees and the milk entering the vat between 16—17 degrees. The result was no temperature related grades and the new shed uses much less electricity due to better refrigeration. A time clock was fitted to the water chiller allowing it to run during milking and turn off until the following morning. Better controls were installed and the temperature of the water in the storage tank set to five degrees. The milk now enters the vat under seven degrees and is stored at 3 degrees — 3.5 cut in. The power usage has been reduced from $1,400 per month to less than $1,000. They knew the importance of adequate farm water for pre cooling. Had the

water at source temperature been 20 degrees or below water chilling would unlikely have been installed. Testing and knowing what your farm water temperature is can’t be stressed enough. I have been using a Weber BBQ thermometer and have checked it against a certified thermometer and it reads within 0.2deg.

Part of the draw for owning your own slice of paradise is having the option of keeping animals and many New Zealanders are leaving the city behind for this very reason. This not only makes a great setting to bring children up in, but can also provide products such as meat, fibre, milk and cheese depending on what animal you choose, and it can even lead to extra income. Firstly it is advised that you research which animal would suit your property. This may depend on the amount of land you have, the gradient and the type of facilities on the property. Northern Veterinary Group production animal vet Paul Martin, urges those new to lifestyle blocks to ask for advice before choosing which animal to keep. “Go to other farms and make sure you fully understand what’s involved. Don’t be afraid to seek advice even after you have the animals.” Hastiness in getting animals before the facilities are up to standard is one of the most common mistakes Mr Martin sees in his work. “Be prepared. Don’t get animals before you are ready. You need all that in place before you bring them home.”

Portable Milking Specialists

As an animal owner you are responsible for all animals under your care according to the Animal Welfare Act 1999. Feeding and care obligations may not suit everyone and it is important to realise someone must look after the animals even if the owner is absent for a short time. Dealing with births, deaths and sick animals will almost always be

a part of animal ownership along with working outside in any weather. Another common mistake Mr Martin comes across is animal owners forgetting that young animals grow up. “They might be easy to handle when they are young but as they grow up they may need more facilities. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t just soldier on thinking you are doing things ok.”

Ideal for wet hills or soggy flat paddocks on farms or lifestyle blocks, the mini spreader is excellent for those places where large vehicles cannot access. “Using our small truck and driver the clients save in time and labour as well as eliminating the excess use of fertiliser as we know the exact sowing rates,” said Nick. The small truck was not being used so the men decided to create the miniature spreading vehicle capable of getting places big trucks have difficulty with, especially in the wet winter conditions. It spreads up to 18 metres wide. “I have hired the mighty mini spreader on my farm and it works great. The hill and flat paddocks were really wet and the machine was able to complete the job with no problems at all and leaving a very light footprint,” said client and Northland president of New Zealand Groundspread association Bill Hilliam. “The addition of the mighty mini spreader is keeping up with requirements on the placing of fertiliser. With the environmental requirements coming into force, the spreading contractors will be required to spread lower rates of fertiliser and have proof of placement of where it has been spread.” Now with the invention of ‘Tracmap’ and ‘Precision Tracking’ a farmer can be forwarded a satellite printout of his farm showing lines with the exact locations the product has been placed. “This will become a requirement by councils all over New Zealand when the new law comes into legislation to show proof of placement of fertiliser, and that it is not spread into open waterways, lakes, wetlands, rivers or streams. If a farmer or lifestyle block owner does get product into waterways he’s in big trouble,” said Bill. “Regulations are getting tighter to come into line with the overseas market, and the clean green primary industries image of New Zealand. The small truck gets into boggy fields and gets the job done with ease. It is ideal for small blocks and especially convenient for those hill clad areas. I highly recommend using the Mighty Mini Spreader,” said Bill.

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

When does more becomes less A new milking season is looming with some farmers having started milking already! The milk price is not looking too good for this season either, so how do we get the best out of our situation? The answer is quite simple. Make sure you look after your cows. Do not compromise on animal health and do not compromise on their basic needs — things like food, water, rest etc. You may get different advice from bank managers and the like. Some bank managers want you to milk more cows and have less staff. They see some farmers running four or more cows to the hectare and seem to think that that means everyone should be able to do the same. Even though this seems to make sense, I don’t believe that this is the right approach. Milking more cows does not automatically equal more milk. It may do in some circumstances but if milking more cows means underfeeding them then this will not be of any benefit to you and you should not go for it. I have seen too many examples where people are milking too many cows. So often I drive past a herd of cows not long after milking and there isn’t much grass left in the paddock. If cows are not fully fed they will not produce to their potential, animal health issues will become a bigger problem, and lameness will increase. You may not believe this but it is true. If you or your bank manager wants you to milk more cows then there are other things that will have to change as well. That may be different for each farmer depending on their situation. It may mean you have to upskill yourself in pasture management or you may improve the fertility of the soil or improve grass species. You may need to get better irrigation systems. If you don’t know what you can improve then you should not consider milking more cows. Another way of putting it is that

1.5M please milking more cows should be a result of better management rather than having to improve management because you want to milk more cows. I would say that in many cases farmers are better off milking less cows rather than more. I know that there are many more reasons why cows are underproducing other than under-feeding but under-feeding is quite a widespread problem. When cows are not producing to their optimum they are not most profitable. If they are more prone to animal health issues they become less profitable again. So be careful when considering milking more cows.

Time to ask the hard questions Fonterra dairy suppliers will soon know whether the payout forecast will again be revised in August, with the declining value of its dairy products. The dairy giant’s competitor Open Country announcing its revised forecast milk price downwards into the range of $3.65–$3.95 from $4.70–$4.90 a kilo will spook the banks and their farmer clients, especially if the Fonterra current cash advance paid to farmers drops to the level of the Open Country announcement of $3.00 a kilo of milk solids for August and October. With November to January forecast at an initial $2.75, the average New Zealand dairy farmer will face a financial operating loss from dairy returns in excess of $200,000. NZX dairy futures price predictions that milk powder will decline even further to US$1,570 a tonne, is well short of the US$3,500 a tonne required for Fonterra to meet its current $5.25 per kilo milk solids forecast. Dairy farmers now face the prospect of receiving the lowest payout since

Apple are one of the best marketers of our time. They produce a great functioning but well designed product that customers want and they can command a significant premium against their competitors. I doubt if Apple would contemplate ever auctioning off their products to determine the market price. In fact, they manage their own price in the market and aggressively protect its value. If we are to really achieve an added value for our supposedly clean green safe dairy products how can we capture a premium when we dump thousands of tonnes, along with everybody else’s, on the auction floor for the customers to set the price. How do we develop strong relationships with our customers and build customer loyalty when we treat them all the same in the auction room? How do we ultimately build added value if we continue to use the crude auction process? This country for decades has

the 2002–2003 season’s $3.63 return. Fonterra’s seemingly belated announcement in recent weeks that it has now engaged consultants to look at its core business, and that there will be 500 staff redundancies, will be viewed by many as an action taken too late and insignificant with the company employing in excess of 18,000 people. Fonterra dairy farmers need to stop being friendly, co-operative members and start becoming hard-nosed, demanding shareholders, speaking out and asking the hard questions. Does the Global Dairy Trade auction system set up by Fonterra really maximise the price for our dairy products? No doubt there will be screams of affirmative from the industry but is it simply a cost effective way of easy selling? Marketing is about producing a product the customer wants and optimising the price you receive.

talked about added value and done the actual opposite. The consultancy company, McKinsey, that originally promoted the mega merger resulting in Fonterra, has now been appointed to review Fonterra’s performance. Well Fonterra has not got even close to delivering what was originally proposed and the company’s soft underbelly has certainly been exposed with the slump in prices. The fact that they have to employ consultants to decide where they are going wrong says bucket loads about the effectiveness of both the management and the board. It’s unlikely any of the top brass will fall on their sword leaving the pain and hurt of their lack of skill to the lower echelons of Fonterra and their farmer suppliers. The board’s chairman and other directors are up for re-election at the forthcoming annual general meeting. History has shown that when company shareholders lose confidence and morale is low, it normally results in the non re-election of the chairman and directors.

Listening to their constituency by Andy Bryenton

Honda quad bikes have been a driving force in rural New Zealand for decades, with a similar staying power as the venerable Massey Ferguson tractor and the Toyota Hilux when it comes to onfarm popularity. That’s not a position which can be kept by standing still, and Honda are careful when designing a new machine to keep the best of the old and incorporate those new little tweaks and changes which most benefit their core market. In an era when many of the ATVs coming into the country seem to have been designed for multiple purposes, hunting and leisure as well as farming. The TRX 500 then, is a chip off the ‘old school’ block. Not in terms of its underpinning technology, for the 500cc Honda is fully equipped with electronic fuel injection for a power boost over the old model, and electric-manual gear selection system as used in modern sports cars.

It’s in the area of design and robust construction that Honda have listened to their farming constituency, incorporating features for improved toughness and upping the TRX 500’s capacity for hard work. This is not a quad bike geared toward leisurely trail rides in the country. It’s a farming tool first and foremost, as evidenced by the use of a swing-arm fixed rear axle. Why is this indicative of the Honda’s farming focus? Well, an independent suspension system in back would make more sense for busting the trails at high speeds. This setup means you can tow more and lug more without bottoming out in the mud. It also means less body roll on

the steep bits that’s where the TRX 500 is quite at home, tackling New Zealand’s often far from flat pasturelands with a load on. Honda’s focus on farming even goes as far as extra guards to keep that ever present mud out of the moving parts, and a rear rack that is the perfect size for that other vital farming essential, the dog. An economical 500 cc configured with the signature Honda low centre of gravity provides enough power for any day’s work on the land, while still delivering in the vicinity of 100km to a single tank of gas.

BOLDLY GO WHERE NO TWO-MAN HAS GONE BEFORE At only 50 inches wide the Pioneer 500 can go where most side by sides can’t. With two seat capacity and a rear carry rack that will make the average ATV cry if you’re looking to haul a big load through a narrow track there’s no better option.

Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that are designed for concrete roads. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money.

2015 YFM 450

• Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance.

Mickey Thompson’s have: Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction if you get punctures, then mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance. The first advantage most drivers mention after replacing the original tyres to Mickey Thompson Tires is the noticeable improvement in handling.

MASSIVE savings across the entire AG100/200, utility ATV and ROV range.

Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it then choose a Mickey Thompson tyre.

ATV 500 for $8,990 inc GST ATV’S & SIDE BY SIDES | BUILT FOR EXTREME CONDITIONS

The town of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA, has far more going for it than an evocative name and a picturesque location. There’s a ‘big cat’ lurking in the surrounding woods, and its name is synonymous with both build quality and reliability. Arctic Cat manufacture a range of ATVS from 300cc to 1,000cc and, sideby-side SSVS from 500cc to 1,000cc, spanning both petrol and diesel power. The whole range is built with commercial users in mind, emphasising tough componentry and ample torque. This focus means that they are particularly suited to the conditions found on New Zealand farms. Despite being forged in the winter snows of North America, these products excel in the mud and dust of Kiwi rural life. Sold with a two-year unlimited warranty and backed by one of the largest distributors of motorcycles, accessories and parts in Australasia, Arctic cat are looking forward to a very successful future here in New Zealand. They’ve even got serious competition for the top of the recreational market, with their wildest offering — the Wildcat 1,000R

— taking it to the opposing RZR and Maverick with great success on the track. Northland Powersports — your home of Arctic Cat — also sell the CF Moto range, Sherco and Benelli road Bikes, with the BN 302 and the barnstorming BN 600 offering Italian performance for learner riders. They also import Harley Davidsons, Triumphs and Jetskis from the USA all with low hours on the clock.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

With 30 years of experience in health and safety in a variety of industries such as energy, engineering, construction, agriculture and forestry in the United Kingdom, Ms Ewing has moved on from her previous position as a Group Manager, Health, Safety, Environment and Quality for Powerco. Ms Ewing began her career with United Kingdom regulator, the Health and Safety Executive, where she worked in the Forest National Interest Group. Here she worked with the forest industry to organise and apply safety guidelines. “Fiona is a health and safety leader who has the practical capability, strategic skills and vision needed to pursue FISC’s goal of zero harm and I look forward to working closely with her,” said FISC chair, Dame Alison Paterson. The FISC organisation is made up of representatives from all areas that influence forest safety such as forest owners, farm foresters, contractors, workers, unions, government and WorkSafe NZ and is a non-profit

organisation. The council was recommended by the Independent Forestry Safety Review Panel that reviewed forest safety in 2014 and is funded jointly by forest owners and the government and has been set up with

an establishment board which will retire after the first full board meeting. After an orientation period where Ms Ewing will meet key figures in forest safety, she will start work in early October.
