Federated Farmers fully backs the target to completely eradicate introduced predators from New Zealand by 2050 announced by the government recently and agrees with the government that emerging technologies now make such an ambitious target possible. This project is going to require a team effort from scientists, farmers, government, politicians and rural communities. “Our farmers live and work in our natural environment every day and in that sense are stewards of a significant part of New Zealand’s land,” says Federated Farmers spokesperson for pest management Chris Allen. “Farmers already spend a substantial amount of money on pest management. They also pay levies to OSPRI, to control vectors of tuberculosis, such as stoats and possums. “While that expenditure has made significant progress, it would take billions of dollars to achieve eradication using current technologies.” Federated farmers say the government is right that new emerging science has now made a predator free New Zealand possible. Such an achievement will have considerable benefit for conservation and the primary industries. “Scientists in the Biological Heritage Challenge have an important role to think outside the square and develop new science for this task,” says Mr Allen. This announcement comes only weeks after delegates at the Federated Farmers annual conference voted in support of researching gene driver
Chris Allen, Federated Farmers spokesperson for pest management
technology in the control and eradication of pests. “Federated Farmers considers that we need access to all the tools in the toolbox by refining our current tools and developing smart new innovative ones if we are to achieve such an important goal. “We are excited to see New Zealand take on this hugely ambitious project, but we are not yet satisfied that the Biological Heritage National Science Challenge is being adequately funded for the task. “Federated Farmers want an assurance that the money will be made available to investigate new strategies and technologies,” says Mr Allen.

Cherished champion retires

Much loved kiwi breeding stud Two Toes has been released for the last time at the Tanekaha Community Pest Control Area in Northland. He’s now completely free of his tracking device after ten years of close full-time monitoring and huge breeding success. Two Toes will retire with his kiwi wife Blinky into Tanekaha’s 800 hectares of predator controlled farmland, native bush and pine forest on the edge of the Hikurangi swamp. “Two Toes and Blinky have done a wonderful job,” says Tanekaha CPCA Coordinator Edwin Smith. “This lovely pair has greatly bolstered the local kiwi population. They’ve produced hatchlings three times each year since we took over monitoring from DOC five years ago.” The Tanekaha community pest controlled area is part of the Hikurangi Living Water catchment. “Now that we have nine new monitored breeding males, it’s time for Two Toes to retire from monitored breeding and for him and Blinky to live freely and safely in the area.” Living Water, a ten-year partnership between Fonterra and the Department of Conservation, works with farmers, iwi, hapu, community groups and key stakeholders to improve the abundance and variety of native wildlife and water quality in five catchments within significant dairying regions. In May, Living Water supported the release of twelve
kiwi into the Tanekaha CPCA through its regional community initiatives fund. The kiwi were moved from predator-free Motuora Island, a kiwi crèche in the Hauraki Gulf. Two Toes was originally found injured and caught in a predator trap, then rehabilitated at the Whangarei Bird Recovery Centre before his release into Tanekaha ten years ago. His injury caused him to lose one of his toes, giving him his name. In the last five years Two Toes and Blinky have produced many viable eggs at Tanekaha, which have been moved for hatching at Auckland Zoo before being released on Motuora and predatorfree Matakohe/Limestone Island in Whangarei Harbour. Another three kiwi chicks have been successfully raised from the Tanekaha pair’s hatchlings, to a less predator prone weight of 1.2 kilograms, before being reintroduced to their natural habitat. Fonterra Living Water Project Manager Tim Brandenburg says: “It’s been great to work with the Tanekaha CPCA group who share the same values as Living Water. The work we’re doing and the work these farmers and their community are doing shows that sustainable dairying and healthy ecosystems can exist alongside each other.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
BY AYLA MILLER They say one of the most dangerous phrases in the English language is that it’s always been done this way, and Denise Knop and her partner Daniel Bradbury are two examples of young farmers with a thirst for knowledge.
T
he couple have recently begun managing a 750 cow dairy farm outside of Kaikohe for the Mangakahia Valley Dairies Trust and are a far cry from the stereotypical farming couple. Denise grew up in rural Germany and the 27-year-old has been working on and off on farms since she was 17. She first came to New Zealand in 2008 when she did a year of work experience. “I wanted to go travelling after school. Australia was too hot, Canada was too cold, so I decided to come out to New Zealand and I absolutely loved it,” she says. It was here that she met her partner Daniel who was on his overseas experience from the United Kingdom. In 2014, after having returned to Europe for a few years, the pair decided
to move to New Zealand to pursue their shared passion of farming. “I love being outside and I love working with animals,” she says. “I also enjoy the variety of work within farming. If it’s a wet day I can sit in the office and do budgets and feeding plans. There are just so many aspects to it that I really enjoy.” Denise is currently the event organiser for Bay of Islands Young Farmers Club and the treasurer for the Northern Region. She says found it to be useful for meeting other young farmers and creating a support network. “Being involved in Young Farmers has done a lot for me in the way of personal development and it has helped me to become more aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I think it has helped me improve in team work and taught

Denise loves being outside and working with animals me a few leadership skills.” She says it is important, especially in tough times, for farmers to have a strong network of people behind them. “All the leaders that come out of New Zealand Young Farmers have a big network to fall back on if needed which will help with the future of the overall agricultural industry. “It is a good opportunity to just talk about random ideas within your industry with other people who are just as passionate about it as you are. “I think it is a really good way to bounce ideas off one another. It is also a really good way to make farming more sustainable, more efficient and more productive.” Denise has a Bachelor in Agricultural Sciences but chose to complete further study to gain more knowledge about livestock science and to improve her command of the English language. Two years ago she completed
her Masters degree in Livestock Sciences in Wales. She says her formal qualifications, although not so helpful with practical on-farm skills, provided her with a good understanding of the overall workings of a farm. “It helped me have a good understanding of finances, how to run an efficient system and it taught me a lot about the animal breeding side of things.” Daniel started farming when he came to New Zealand during his OE and when he and Denise travelled back to Europe together he continued to farm, working his way up the ladder. Denise says their two different skill sets complement each other. “I’m so detailed and he is more of a big picture type person so we don’t forget to focus on either aspect.” She agrees the agricultural industry is

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

drainage ditches on the farm,” said Ian. Australasian bitterns are an endangered native bird which can be found in wetlands feeding at night on fish, eels, frogs, freshwater crayfish and aquatic insects. Ian says he was inspired to establish a bittern sanctuary when he regularly began to see the birds on his property and believes a successful dairy farm and native wildlife can go hand Dargaville farmer Ian Lupton believes a dairy in hand. farm and native wildlife can coexist successfully Fonterra and the Department of Conservation are to increase ecosystem resilience and working together with dairy farmers, farm profitability. This involves improving iwi, conservation groups, schools water quality and working to increase and other interested agencies in five the quantity and variety of native wildlife areas of significant dairying regions in these areas.

Under this cooperative effort, called Living Water, the agencies are working to plant native plants along the waterways to reduce run-off, meaning the wetlands are a healthier, more suitable habitat for birds and fish. Predator and weed control is also an important part of this. Ian has sought financial assistance from this partnership to help him with his bittern project. His vision and efforts to create a sanctuary mesh with the Living Water goal and together with the Department of Conservation they have arranged regular planting days with local high school students and volunteers. Department of Conservation ranger Oliver Knox says the first step of the process is to find out how many bitterns are living on Ian’s farm. “Living Water funding will be used to buy digital recorders to record the birds booming on Ian’s farm. The recordings will be analysed to establish the number of bitterns on the property,” says Olly. Further funding will also be put towards predator and weed control. Enviroschools Northland secondary schools facilitator, Jacqueline Knight, has also involved Dargaville High School students in the project along with teacher Tim Pratt, who is in charge of the nursery growing the native plants for riparian planting. Some students will also be involved in the planting of these along with recording sightings of bitterns, and

examining the vegetation and the habitat to add to the database of information about what the birds require to thrive. “The students are making monthly visits to the farm to record sightings of the birds, noting details of the vegetation and conditions they favour,” says Jacqueline. “These are secretive birds. If we can learn more about the habitat and conditions they like, we can recreate these as we build the sanctuary.” Retiree Maurie Kearns is a regular voluntary participant in planting days and encourages anyone interested in protecting the bittern habitat to get involved. “What better way to spend your time,” he says, “you get to go places that aren’t accessible to the public and meet other likeminded people. “A lot of the wetlands A rare Australasian bittern bird around the country are slowly disappearing . Fortunately now farmers are having to conscious. They have to protect their act responsibly. I think it is important land because once it is lost and polluted that farmers are environmentally you’ll never get it back.”

Creating your outdoor haven Home show giveaway
New Zealanders have an attachment to their personal slice of paradise and regardless of constraints and challenges They may find with their property, they often create a private haven with the design they choose for their garden. Whether it is a swimming pool or entertainment area which links a house to a deck or creating a children’s playground, the options are endless including tranquil waterfall features, BBQ areas or native bush. Many gardens come to life at night with lighting effects in the trees, pool or throughout the garden. A courtyard could incorporate natural stonework, tropical plants or statues to create a soothing or relaxing atmosphere. Landscaping can create original, traditional or timeless designs that can enhance the most boring of properties. With a bit of thought and planning, either by yourself or with a professional designer, the most uninviting yard can become a beautiful haven. Whilst it may be tempting to create an incredible front yard, it is a good idea to check how much of the budget your backyard design is going to use. For beginners, doing your own landscaping can be fun. Make a list of your wants and needs. Would your friends and family gather on a deck. Do you need a playground or
want to grow flowers and vegetables. Draw some rough sketches of your yard with designs of where you want to place things. These will give you ideas of what may and may not work ultimately, even if they are rough, you or your designer will get an idea of what may look good. Get books out of the library on landscaping designs and how-tos. You can easily play around with ideas without a lot of commitment. It is a good idea to study the sun and wind patterns. You might want to place a deck on a side of the house which actually gets not enough or too much sun or wind. The same goes for installing an outdoor fireplace. You do not want the wind whistling around a corner extinguishing the fire or creating hazards. Making quick decisions about your yard can lead to choices that don’t work in the long term. If you have just moved to the property, live with it for a time so you know what is planted. In landscape design for beginners, patience is the key. If an empty space is too much to look at you can use temporary solutions such as ground covers which grow fast, plant annuals or spread mulch. This will give you a temporary solution whilst you discover what could be your lifetime backyard.

Choosing your colour
TIMBER SHEDS & SLEEP-OUTS
If names like ‘thornton cream’ and ‘half pearl lustre’ strike fear into your heart, you are not alone. The world of paint and colour can be an overwhelming one, but once you understand the basics, the results can be very rewarding. The colour you choose can affect the mood of a room and it is believed colour accounts for the majority of our response to an object or a place. This is called colour psychology and is important in the way we use it in our homes and workplaces. Contrary to The Rolling Stones desire to paint that red door black, intense dark colours can be overpowering in a small space, so keep these to the larger rooms and consider using your favourite dark colour as a feature wall. If you are after a stimulating social vibe for a dining room or lounge think about introducing a strong bold colour. Light colours for these rooms can sometimes appear stark and cold. If you aren’t sure where to begin, start small, perhaps in the bathroom or a hallway. Often a good way to choose a colour is to select a favourite from some artwork, furniture or accessory and match this to your walls. Consider what kind of mood you hope to achieve in this space. If it is the bedroom do you want it to be light and dreamy or warm and intimate. If it is a child’s room think about the personality of the child. Are they energetic and active or calm and thoughtful? Do you want to create an active space or a

calming one? Bear in mind some colours can over stimulate the young brain and create unrest. Pay careful attention to the lighting in the room. Remember natural lighting is the truest colour whilst fluorescent lighting brings out the blue tones. Incandescent lighting brings out the warm tones. If you are still not sure about your colour choices, test some on a board or take a colour chart home with some samples until you have made a decision you feel comfortable with.

Bounty from the balance of nature by Andy Bryenton
We all know that natural honey is a source of many health benefits — and that the tiny communal insects which create it are hard at work on any given day in rural New Zealand.
We help beekeepers get paying hive sites and we help land owners find beekeepers For beekeepers with over 20 hives who are looking to generate additional revenue from their hives and benefit from a more diverse range of apiary sites, we provide a simple system for managing your Customers (apiaries) in the cloud and keeping the land owner in the loop while collecting a reliable monthly income. For land owners, we provide fully serviced beehives without the need to be a beekeeper yourself. Our beekeepers are fully registered and take care of the bees year round for a monthly or yearly fee. If you want to become a BeezThingz Beekeeper and start taking on paying rental customers, or you want to get Bees on your land; contact Julian McCurdy on the details below:

around road works
But the story of honeybees and their hives is not a one-way street, as these fascinating colony creatures do far more than simply harvest nectar to make their ‘liquid gold’. How valuable is the symbiosis between bees and humans? Well, it’s estimated that over one third of all our agrarian crops simply would not survive without bees to pollinate them. The loss in export revenue if other means had to be used to pollinate and thus fertilise those crops is estimated to be in the order of $200 billion yearly — to say nothing of the human cost in possible famine. Bees are efficient pollinators thanks to many factors, but their symbiosis with human agriculture dates back centuries. Many of our modern crops have come to rely on the honeybee in a kind of self-reinforcing cycle. For example, 80 per cent of the world’s almonds are of one cultivar and come exclusively from California. They are totally dependent on honeybees to grow after decades of cultivation. No wonder then, that the United States has a national pollinator week
NEW FORD RANGER NZs NO1 SELLING UTILITY
to raise awareness of the benefit bees have in agriculture. Here in New Zealand we haven’t gone so far as to declare a national week of appreciation, but our bees and their produce are just as important. Our little nation has over 5,000 official beekeepers, kept busy by tending half a million hives. Each Kiwi goes through close to one and a half kilos of honey per year and our manuka honey is world famous. But once again, this is not the full story. Bees and plants have complex interaction and without them even industries which seem unrelated, such as dairy, would be in dire trouble — pasture, too, is a plant which needs pollination to thrive season after season. In some nations where bees have become scarce through the collapse of ecosystems, through pollution or through the introduction of predators and parasites, crops must be laboriously pollinated by armies of human workers with small brushes. There are even
plans afoot to create pollinating robot drones — bee pun intended — to fill-in in areas where real honeybees have disappeared. With the strong bond between farmers and beekeepers here, backed up by diligent biosecurity controls, this will hopefully never be the future of New Zealand. To maintain a vibrant agricultural economy, this partnership between those who tend the herds and those who tend the hives is vital — just like the partnership between green and growing things and the hard working honeybees themselves.

Meeting industry demand Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre is to deliver apiculture courses in Northland to meet the local honey industry’s rapid growth and need for skilled workers. As of March, New Zealand honey export values increased to a new record of $300 million, up 42 per cent on 2015, according to data from Ministry of Primary Industries. As many as 684,046 hives were registered throughout New Zealand in June 2016 which is 16 per cent more than in June 2015. The number of NZ businesses managing the hives has also increased from 4,814 in 2014 to 5,551 in 2015. Northland produces some of the highest grade manuka honey in the country and it’s estimated that the province has the potential to produce exports of the medical/cosmetic grade honey to the value of $70 million according to the Northland Regional Growth Strategy. Taratahi Business Development Manager Richard Wanhill said the rapid growth in the industry in Northland was being matched by a strong demand for courses in apiculture.
“Taratahi has more than 120 people currently enrolled in the Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture across New Zealand from Northland to Southland and that is expected to at least double next year with the new courses starting in early August. “There is a huge demand for skills and lots of opportunity for careers in this growth industry. We are working closely with key industry people to ensure we are delivering the skilled workers they need,” Mr Wanhill says. Taratahi delivers practical vocational education for the primary sector so there will be plenty of hands-on learning opportunities in commercial apiaries as well as theory in the classroom. Courses are focussed on turning out work-ready employees and skilling up those who are already in the industry who are seeking a recognised qualification. Course content for the 34-week NCEA level three qualification includes: bees

September is looking to be a hive of activity as apiculturists and bee enthusiasts spread the word about the importance of bees as part of Bee Aware Month. Bee Aware Month is designed to create a buzz around the honey bee and its role in the nation’s biodiversity and economy. Many people don’t realise the bee population actually contributes as much as $5 billion to the New Zealand economy each year and are key players in about a third of everything we eat. Not only that, New Zealand manuka honey is some of the most valued honey in the world. Apiculture New Zealand CEO Daniel Paul says the numbers of beekeepers and hives, particularly in the hobbyist/ non-commercial sector have been increasing over the past couple of years.

This year the campaign’s focus will be shifting to honey. Sometimes referred to as liquid gold, honey is a staple product in most New Zealand pantries and can be found on our toast, in our beauty products and even being used for its medicinal properties. “Through the theme Show me the Honey, we plan to demonstrate the increasing importance of honey — and therefore bees — to New Zealanders,” Mr Paul said. “It will be an opportunity to further position New Zealand honey as a value-added product that sits alongside kiwifruit and our wine industry, among others, as lucrative export earners on the world stage.” Mr Paul says this theme will explore several sweet topics including, honey and honey product sales, honey health benefits and the different sorts of honey produced in New Zealand. You can get involved in a number of activities this Bee Aware Month and keep up-to-date with what’s happening via the Facebook page ‘Bee Aware Month’ and the ApiNZ website apinz.org.nz.

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES ADVERTORIAL
Making hives easier Whanganui company Hiveplus Ltd has launched their new beehive product, which is quickly gaining international recognition within the beekeeping industry. Inventor Rob Bartley came up with the design by rethinking the beehive and achieving a more cost effective way for those working with bees to prepare their hives. Directly involved in the honey industry, Rob Bartley runs hundreds of hives in the Ruatiti area and with his invention he was recently named winner of the Roy Paterson Trophy for innovation presented at the Apiculture New Zealand conference. A simple plastic tray replaces the convoluted and expensive base currently used on hives and features a ventilation panel underneath to regulate hive temperature. The tray has a removable plastic strip along its front which are interchangeable and beekeepers can turn over for summer or winter conditions. “Instead of fiddling with little bits of timber and buying mesh, this plastic tray does all of that and very cheaply. It’s such a simple solution,” said Mr Bartley. Not only has it been created in Whanganui, but local company Axiam Plastics is producing it. Mr Bartley said
his honey business has 400 hives in the Ruatiti area, which he plans to increase to 800 this season. “I was watching our beekeepers making up hive bases and I thought there had to be an easier way. We came up with a couple of prototypes and took them to Axiam Plastics,” he said. He said it wasn’t just the national award that mattered. “There had been ‘huge interest’ from New Zealand and international beekeepers and samples of the product have gone to honey producers in the Philippines, Israel, Canada and Australia.” Mr Bartley said the design has been patented and Hiveplus has been established to specifically target the beekeeping industry and more products were on the drawing board. Hiveplus is a company working under the umbrella of the Bartley Group, and manager Lynda Hocquard accepted the award. She said interest in the hive tray Mr Bartley invented is overwhelming. The product comes with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.

That’s because they’ve been told that Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are the three key nutrients for growing pasture. And there’s no doubt that NPK works. Every farmer can see the grass growing results for themselves. But there are a couple of things you can’t see.
The Two Missing Gears Even though your NPK fertiliser will do a job for you, it won’t condition the soil, grow grass, and ultimately produce milk as well as it should. Not if two crucial elements are missing. Calcium and Magnesium. These two elements are crucial to a proper fertiliser programme. That’s because Ca and Mg regulate and activate the other nutrients. They are the nutrients that link everything together to enable all the elements to function at full capacity. When we say “everything” and “all the elements,” we mean the nutrients already existing in your soil and the billions of living organisms in the soil that are largely responsible for grass growth and soil health. To examine what Calcium and Magnesium actually do, we need to look at what’s going on beneath the grass.
Fertiliser effectiveness is based around the calcium content of your soil. If the base saturation calcium is below 60%, nutrient uptake is restricted.
What Magnesium Does Worker #1: Good bacteria. In the soil factory, these guy make nutrients available to plants, increase nutrient retention, and enhance soil structure to improve the flow of water and reduce erosion. They release plant growth hormones that stimulate root growth and improve root architecture. They detoxify soil and suppress disease by protecting plants from Pathogens. Worker #2: Fungi Fungi decompose complex carbon compounds and improve the accumulation of organic matter. Some fungi produce hormones and antibiotics which enhance root growth and provide disease suppression. Others physically bind soil particles into aggregates which helps air and water flow as well as the transportation of nutrients to plants. Worker #3: Protozoa Protozoa are single-celled microorganisms that are active near the root zone. Protozoa release excess nitrogen and nutrients for plants to use and also help soil particles to bind together to provide pore space for retention and exchange of air and water. Worker #4: Nematodes These non-segmented worms mineralise nutrients into plantavailable forms and consume disease-causing organisms.
Magnesium is essential for plant growth. It is actively involved in photosynthesis and also plays an important role in plant respiration and energy metabolism. • Mg is a carrier for Phosphorus so will ensure a steady flow of Phosphorous to the plant. • Mg increases nitrogen fixation in legumes. • Mg is an enzyme activator and constituent of many enzymes. • Mg is responsible for sugar synthesis and starch translocation. • Mg enables nutrient uptake control. Magnesium is also necessary in hundreds of animal biochemical pathways, particularly those involved in nerve function. Ruminants also require magnesium for efficient feed conversion and metabolism.
But I already use Ca and Mg! Some off-the-shelf fertilisers have a Mg/Ca component in them. Should work, right? It depends. The Calcium and Magnesium in standard fertilisers are chemically produced in laboratories. In artificially hardened forms, these nutrients are far less effective than the organic Ca/Mg that soil biology and plants prefer.
Worker #5: Soil Arthropods These guys improve the soil factory structure through burrowing. Their fecal pellets help bind soil particles and their waste is rich in plant nutrients.
Your Soil is a Grass-Growing Factory Think of what a factory is: a place where goods are manufactured. But manufacturing requires more than just a location; to produce goods, a factory needs to be filled with workers – labourers who have specific jobs that enable products to be made. Like a typical factory, your soil is filled with workers. These are the organisms that are labouring to make tonnes of healthy grass for your herd. Without this underground workforce, nothing grows. They are literally that important. As a farmer, you are the CEO of this factory. Your job is to make sure the soil labourers have everything they need to do their grass-growing work.
Golden Bay Dolomite is Organic Dolomite is a 59% calcium 39% magnesium carbonate occurring as a completely natural rock deposit found in New Zealand only at Mount Burnett, Golden Bay.
Worker #6: Earthworms These guys improve soil stability, porosity, and moistureholding capacity by burrowing and binding soil. They even help root growth by creating channels lined with nutrients. The burrows of vertical earthworms pipe air deeper into the soil, stimulating microbial nutrient cycling at those deeper levels. During droughts these tunnels allow for deep plant root penetration into subsoil regions of higher moisture content.
How Calcium Helps Calcium is known as the King of minerals. That’s because Ca is the transportation nutrient that enhances the uptake of many other nutrients. Some of its functions include: • Improves the soil environment for micro-organisms • Promotes healthy root, stem and leaf growth • Should be between 60 - 70% soil base saturation
Dolomite’s magnesium release rate makes it the perfect magnesium controlled release fertiliser. As plant root acid secretions in the soil work on dolomite, its rate of breakdown accelerates in demand to plant requirements, releasing both magnesium and calcium in quantities sufficient to meet requirements, something even a mixture of lime and MgO can’t do.

An Italian Tower and Your Farm Everyone has seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa, either in photos, or from travelling through Italy. From the time Bonnano Pianso began its construction in 1173, it took a full 200 years to complete. The quality of the stone is excellent and the masonry is superb – most stones have no mortar between them because the quality of the workmanship has created the bond. But the tower itself is useless. Not as a tourist attraction, but as a building. By 2001, the tower leant at an angle of 5.5 degrees, meaning the top of the tower was displaced horizontally 3.9 metres from the centre. Not something I’d sleep comfortably in. What caused the lean? Water. 10,000 years ago, the location of the Tower was a river estuary with tide water constantly flowing in and out, depositing layers of soft sand and silt. The reason the Tower tilts southward is because the soil under the south side of the monument is more compressible than on the north. The lesson? No matter how well you build something, if the foundations are weak, the whole thing is compromised. Even on your farm. No doubt you’re doing plenty of things right. You use proven grazing practices, you diligently manage the health of your animals, you employ efficient production systems, and you do your best to keep on top of the pond crust. And yet, in spite of making money, too much of it seems to get spent on fixing problems: eradicating weeds, curing Mastitis, facial eczema, foot Rot, improving poor digestion, removing recurring pond crust, treating non cycling cows, etc, etc. It’s the Pisa Problem: Great tower, bad foundation, pity about the lean. The foundation of every successful farm is good management, and good management is mostly to do with forward planning. When management problems arise, it’s often from farmers going for short-term results without anticipating the long-term costs that will come later. This fixation on the short-term gains causes everything to lean sideways. So what’s the key to efficient farm management? Focusing on the next three months. Here are two major issues which fit into that crucial window: 1) The largest profit window in your season is approaching (September to December) 2) Mating is close How your cows are calving now is a signal for what mating will be like later. If they’re calving within a week of their expected calving date, that’s good. It means your cows have the energy and stamina to go to full term. If they’re not calving on time and a lot of retained afterbirth is occurring, that’s a sign of poor nutrition.
Proper nutrition is the foundation for a good in-calf result. This includes trace elements (like Copper, Cobalt and Selenium) and the elimination of parasites like intestinal worms and lice. A wise farmer will check the herd NOW and remedy any trace element deficiencies he uncovers. If you do that, your cows will recover quicker from calving, they’ll milk better, and you’ll prepare them for mating. Another thing to test is your soil pH. If the pH is below 6.4, the Calcium and Magnesium levels of your cows could be too low which will result in metabolic problems. Don’t wait for these metabolic problems to show up in the animals; for every cow that presents with metabolic issues, another ten are on the verge of the same problem. A word of warning to farmers who are tempted to ignore testing. If you ignore the warning signals now, you’ll create three problems: 1) Lost opportunity for your cows to maximise best cost-efficient production. 2) Costly Vet intervention with CIDRS and drugs to address non-cycling cows. 3) A disappointing in-calf rate creating further losses for next season. Perhaps the most important management action to carry out is to apply the right fertiliser to your soil. So many problems are minimised if the soil is nutritionally correct. That’s because everything in the soil (nutrients, pH levels, organisms, whether good or bad) gets transferred around the farm: from soil to grass, from grass to cow, from cow to pond. What’s the best fertiliser to apply? Depends what your soil is lacking? The only way to know what’s missing is to do a proper soil test – one that takes into account the 16 elements needed to grow nutritious feed. After that, choose a customised fertiliser that’s specifically designed to give your soil only what it needs. To build your farm business on a better foundation, go to www.forwardfarming.co.nz to learn more.

We can fix your crusted pond in two ways... #2: Fixing your pond PERMANENTLY #1: Fixing your pond RIGHT NOW You may not know this, but the immediate cause of your pond crust is a type of bacteria in the effluent. These bacteria are anaerobic – they hate light and oxygen. To create dark, oxygen-less conditions, these bacteria separate the effluent fibres and then send them to the surface to form the crust. Q: How do you counter these bad bacteria? A: With good bacteria. That’s what Slurry Bugs are – helpful bacteria that prefer light and oxygen. To get these conditions, Slurry Bugs eat the pond crust. Literally. Not only do Slurry Bugs remove the crust, they transform the effluent nutrients into organic forms that are easily used by plants. In other words, they liquefy your pond and turn it into an effective, spreadable fertiliser. To fix your pond without expensive machinery, use Slurry Bugs. Go to www.slurrybugs.co.nz to find out more.

Dealing with crust-causing pathogens at the site of your pond is one thing. But the long-term economical solution is stopping them at their point of origin. In your soil. What kind of soil is home to bad bacteria? A soil that has low pH levels. When you treat your soil with a low pH fertiliser, the pH level of the soil drops. A low soil pH helps pathogens breed since pathogens prefer higher acidity levels. Here’s a key principle: Whatever is in the soil gets transferred: to the grass, to the animals, to the effluent, to the pond. If your soil is dominated by pathogens, it is biologically inevitable that your pond will suffer the same domination. This is why a farmer with a low pH soil will always have problems with crusting in his effluent pond. We see this correlation again and again. At Forward Farming, we help farmers condition their soils (1) to promote the good biology that grows healthy grass, healthy animals, and full vats (2) to suppress the pathogens that cause disease and pond crust. This approach is not a quick fix, but it really works. To read more, go to www.fowardfarming.co.nz

Tahi is an 800 arce plus property located in Pataua North. Tahi is not only home to many birds and wildlife it is also the home to Tahi Honey.
T
he property was purchased in 2004 and has been turned from derelict farmland into an ecotourism destination with the added bonus of a honey business. “The owner Suzan currently lives in Europe and she wanted a place in New Zealand for herself and her children to come back to,” said Tahi Honey
representative Knox Henderson. “Her two main criteria were a surf beach and something that had conservation potential and they stumbled onto this property which ticked all the boxes.” The farmer was retiring and the farm needed a lot of attention and Suzan decided to take on the property as her conservation project.

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

We have built a habitat for them to call home now and this is with thanks to our honey sales.” Every jar of honey that is purchased contributes directly to the conservation effort and keeps the project going. Tahi operates under the business model of the four Cs; community, culture, commerce and conservation. “We get our name from the local mountain Ohuatahi. That was the main pa site here. Crisis in New Zealand log supply New Zealand wood processing leaders held a meeting with senior government officials and political leaders in Whangarei recently to assess the acute log supply shortage to local mills in Northland. The joint industry/government meeting saw statistics that pointed towards the unsustainable forest harvest rate in Northland along with suggestions that Northland forests were being harvested and exported at an immature stage. There was also limited evidence of replanting and no new afforestation. Chair of the Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association of New Zealand, Brian Stanley, said that the
Northland circumstance is severe but he is hearing a clear message from WPMA members that a threatening log supply situation is being observed from Northland right through to Southland. “If New Zealand wants economic growth in its regions, jobs for local people, affordable housing and environmental protection then it needs a viable New Zealand wood industry,” said Mr Stanley. This view was strongly reinforced by Pita Tipene of Taitokerau

We owe this to future generations. Protecting the forest environment Forest owners are prepared to play their part in environment protection. The Forest Owners Association says there are forest-based solutions to some of the issues raised in the report released by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Jan Wright. Chair of the joint Forest Owners and New Zealand Farm Foresters Associations’ Environment Committee, Peter Weir, says New Zealand’s plantation forests lock up millions of tonnes of carbon. “Once we get a real carbon price going under the Emissions Trading Scheme then the area and the carbon our forests lock up will increase again. That helps address what Dr Wright calls, “climate change — by far the most serious environmental issue we face.” Mr Weir says blanket planting on highly erodible land of short rotation pinus radiata for clear-fell is not an optimum solution. “There is a trade-off between markedly reduced erosion for 27 to 30 years while the trees are growing and an elevated risk for the five or so years after harvest. We have a draft National Environmental Standard sitting with
government at the moment. I hope it’s going to be implemented very soon. In it, there are rules about requiring geotechnical assessments before any planting on highly erodible land, to see if that terrain can support access roads and clear-felling — otherwise a standard radiata forest can’t be planted on such land as a permitted activity. “It may well be those kauri, totara, redwood, Douglas fir or other speciality timbers are a more suitable species.” He says the NES for plantation forests is a comprehensive yardstick which will lead to consistent and defensible rules to maintain water quality. “We have specifications for instance, which limit the number of times a logging truck can go across a ford in a stream, so as to reduce the mud washed off the tires, which might affect native fish. Jan Wright has correctly identified that water quality is high in forested areas, and it should be kept that way.” He says the biodiversity in the pine plantation forest also includes the bird life. “Along with kiwi and kokako, most of the endangered New Zealand falcons live in our pine forests. These forests

What’s happening to our farming practises? During the 1950’s and up to the 1980’s farming was a family affair, it worked really well with support from the community, helping each other with hay and silage and whatever was necessary. Back then the average dairy farm was 40 hectares, farming was simple and easy and during that period our NZ farmers were recognised as the most proficient and cost effective farmers on the planet, people from around the globe were coming to NZ to witness what was happening. Our agricultural science was enviable, our scientists were completely independent, funded by the taxpayer and expanding the envelope of good, healthy farming. There were very little problems and I remember the most toxic product in the milking shed was the oil required to keep the separator running smoothly.
When we hit the mid 1980’s there was a radical change in farming based around corporate scientific systems and industrial farming coming out of the United States. The first big shift I recognised was the introduction of maize as a supplementary feed for dairy and drystock. What sort of backward thinking was that? Maize causes acidosis in Ruminant animals resulting in mastitis. Maize and corn are for chickens, chickens do well on it, however Ruminants which are the bulk of our farming are designed to convert grass into milk and meat and they are really good at it, especially if there is plenty of clover on the farm.

The other big move was the introduction of toxic chemical animal health tonics. Stored behind locked cages in a profusion of different colours, all with the same word — Poison — written on the plastic label. They are there to control the myriad of problems, but they don’t really work, as we see pests, diseases and weeds building immunity towards these artificial chemical concoctions. There is a solution to all this chemical dilemma and all the answers are within nature. Just to get you thinking onto the right track we need to go back 460 million years ago to when the first plant appeared and there was obviously soil biota already operating and multiplying in the soil. Once the plant world was underway then other life forms such as animals and sea life began to multiply. Planet earth has been able to sustain all life on the globe for the past 460 million years and is still doing it in those areas of natural habitat. 100 years of chemical production and our beautiful planet is suffering, we need to take care of our planet and the fastest way to do this is to move away from the “chemical age”; hook into all the natural capital supplied free by Mother Nature and begin working with Agrissentials multi-mineral,
microbial rich fertilisers bringing health vitality and immunity to plant life which will transfer on to animals and humans. This is all part and parcel of Mother Nature’s system. Nature has all the checks and balances to keep life pumping. Chemicals increase problems. Chemicals increase their own market. The heavy use of chemicals have impacted on soil to the extent a lot of soils have no life, no micro organisms and no worms. This scenario opens up the soil to fungal toxins, infertility and FE causing fungus, these toxic fungi live on the dead plant material in the bottom of the pasture. The best way to fix this problem is to have a live, living soil full of microorganisms and worms, which love thatch and turn it into topsoil, keeping the whole system alive, healthy and fertile, fixing the problem, keeping the stock happy and keeping money in the farmer’s pocket. With nature it’s a win, win situation. So it’s time to change to a certified natural system and start picking up better returns. Agrissentials can take you there. Humates improve stock condition
C&C Contract Electrical Dargaville
Environmental Fertilisers Ltd has announced the results of field trials in which EF Stock Primer has been added to calf milk at 1–2ml per litre to maintain calf gut health at a cost of one to two cents a calf/day. ‘Any calves of colour or with scours we give a 20ml shot for three days and international trials show this has the ability to manage illnesses such as rotavirus, E coli, strep and staph infections,’ the company reports. ‘Humate based product trials by scientists over a 56-day study with beef indicated a 12 per cent increase in feed efficiency. Manure samples were of a fine texture with reduced odour and blood data indicating increases in haemoglobin and antioxidants. ‘Follow-up testing on the odour indicated a 64 per cent reduction in ammonia from the animal waste when humate was mixed into it. ‘A farmer mixed humates into the rations of a mature cow and three calves. Reports after 60 days indicated colouration and health of the animals to be excellent. Weight gain on the calves was reported to be above the norm. He had been trying to breed the cow over a three-year period without success, but during the testing period, the cow became pregnant. ‘For dairy, a test was run on 500 high
producing dairy cattle over a 28day period. ‘Milk, blood and animal waste were analysed before, during and after the testing period. The introduction of the humate into the diet produced 1.9 pounds [862g] of extra milk daily per animal and feed consumption dropped from 38 to 36 pounds [17.2 to 16.3kg] per day. It can be concluded that the animal was digesting its nutrient more completely, thus creating greater milk production. ‘Lactation decline curves flattened significantly during the testing period. This indicates that longer milking periods can be achieved, raising the cumulative amounts of milk received from each cow. ‘Nursing female goats were experiencing mastitis and would not allow the kids to nurse. Humate was introduced into the ration and within one week all infection had cleared up.
Angora goats are being fed humate to improve the quality of the wool. Reports from the wool buyers indicate that the humate fed goats have longer staple and more lanolin in the wool. ‘Dr Matt Colvin, DMV reports that he is using humates in the diet to treat scours in piglets. His experience with the humates indicates that it is a very effective treatment. Farmers the length of the country have lost a staunch advocate with the passing of Bill Guest, who was operations director for Farmers of New Zealand. Mr Guest was farewelled by a large gathering at a funeral in Dargaville on Friday, July 29. He was a successful farmer on his property at Te Kopuru and a former Kaipara District Councillor, but ultimately and for much of his life, he was a champion — a knight protector of the rural community. He was called upon for sage advice and indeed positive assistance in times of difficulty, be it with finances, drought, politics or another of the many problems that can make up life on the land. In recent years, Mr Guest became nationally known for his incisive opinion piece newspaper column, Be My Guest, which appeared regularly in rural publications throughout the country. Farmers of New Zealand chairman, Ian Walker described Mr Guest as “one constant in farming advocacy in New Zealand. “For many farming families, Bill was their saviour. Governments, banks, lawyers, and stock companies are but a few to have experienced the tenacious

fighting spirit Bill brought to protecting farmer and rural rights. For many a campaign running low on funds, he had opened his own cheque book to keep it on track. “He was instrumental in achieving changes to legislation requiring the then NZ Dairy Board to undergo accountability and performance reviews; initiated amendments to the Waitangi Tribunal Act ensuring freehold land could not be returned to claimants; led the protests during the Weddel receivership; led many a campaign defending property rights, in particular the Aranga dispute, the Whangapae land dispute, the Far North District Plan, and also the plight of the Waikare oyster farmers. “He also became an expert in employment law, dealing with hundreds of employment disputes each year in his role as operations director.” William John ‘Bill’ Guest was born in Te Kopuru on July 12 1946 and died in Te Kopuru on July 23 2016. He was the son of Nell and the late Bill

Enhancing farm systems A brand new farming initiative — Extension 350 — is an innovative programme, the first of its kind for New Zealand. Designed to lift on-farm performance through improving farm systems and profitability through shared knowledge. Extension 350 chairman, Ken Hames, is highly enthusiastic about the initiative’s potential. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Beef and Lamb, DairyNZ, Northland Inc and the Ministry of Primary Industries to work together to improve the region’s economy,” says Mr Hames. The programme aims to have 350 Northland farms involved in four years and is modelled on having clusters of five farms working together with business advice and direction provided to a Target Farmer by an expert consultant, with that relationship encouraged by a Mentor Farmer. The expectation is that the Target Farmer similarly influences a group of Associated Farmers. “Extension 350 has the ability to enhance farm systems to improve the profitability of the farms involved. Northland Inc has been of great assistance in having independent economic evaluation of a grass roots project which has encouraged other funders to seriously consider the proposition. For the farmer — profitability equals choices — such as the flexibility to make decisions about future on-farm improvements,
repaying debt or improving livelihood,” he says. The pilot scheme which ran at Candy Farm in Okaihau from 2011 to 2014 saw local farmers Alister and Lyn Candy make management changes which have resulted in greater resilience and an increase in profits of around $180,000 per annum. Chris Neill of DairyNZ added that he was pleased to have partnered with the Nor thland Dair y Development Trust to support the Focus Farm Lyn Candy, MPI Minister Nathan Guy, Alister Candy and Minister Steven Joyce at the Candy’s Extension 350 pilot project farm and Partner Farm pilot projects which have proven the power of farmers supporting farmers to make Economic Action Plan and we believe it has the potential to change the way we on farm change. “Extension 350 is the next step of farm by giving more farmers the tools scaling up farmer driven initiatives to and profitability to embed sustainable a large number of Northland farmers. practices in their farm systems. Triumph motorcycles have always seemed a more refined choice when it comes to power and prestige on two wheels — with a pedigree stretching back to 1902 and a stable of names including the Thruxton, Bonneville and Trident, there’s a hint of true English heritage to the brand. But despite the fact that Triumph excel at producing beautifully crafted, classic inspired machines — take a look at the new T120 Bonneville for example — they’re dedicated to new

technology. From the early days of Triumph’s ‘reboot’, the management have looked to the future while preserving the best aesthetic cues of the past, and the recipe has cooked up some modern classics. Now it’s the turn of a Triumph icon to get a boost from some cutting-edge tech. The original Triumph Tiger was a speedy little single cylinder scrambler, built before world war two. It evolved into Triumph’s ‘go anywhere’ model, but with the advent of this year’s new generation there may very well be no terrain the Tiger Explorer can’t tame. This is thanks in part to a massive increase in power over the old ‘37 — a 12 valve, triple cylinder 1215cc engine generating biblical amounts of torque. It’s the biggest engine in its class, and it’s mated to a six speed box with a super high sixth gear for lazy revs and fuel economy on those long, open-road hauls. The choice between road and wilderness is defined by the two models in the Tiger range — the XC for the rough stuff and the XR for the highway. Don’t be fooled — the XR isn’t restricted to
The new Tiger Explorer is worlds away from the simple single-pot scrambler of the 1930s
lovely fresh tarmac. But it’s the XC which can really get stuck in to the mud, sand, gravel and dirt of the wider world, thanks to some very clever thinking and design. Both models of Tiger Explorer share the same computerised brain — an unthinkable luxury back in the 1930s. As well as delivering confidence-inducing rider modes for different conditions — including one for rain and slippery roads which would prove a godsend right now in New Zealand — the ‘brain’ of the Tiger also deploys a so-called Triumph Semi Active Suspension System. This uses no less than three gyroscopes and three accelerometers to measure the speed, pitch, yaw and roll of the bike, adjusting the suspension
damping accordingly. It’s technology which you’d have found only in a cruise missile not so long ago, and it makes the Explorer — in both variants — as sure footed as a the proverbial mountain goat. With a crisp and angular new look, stuffed with futuristic technology and ready to ride from here to Siberia if that’s what you’re planning for the day, the Tiger Explorer is positive proof that Triumph can take on the thoroughly modern adventure bike segment of the market and deliver the goods. With more and more riders opting for this style of machine to explore new horizons, it’s well worth a closer look.

The Ford Transit Custom packs in more features as well as more cargo
ceiling doors, eliminating anything to snag or foul up the ingress or egress of heavy packages. All of that before you consider the additional 2,750 kilos of towing capacity on call. Despite this, the Transit Custom is small enough to ease into covered carparks, and boasts a turning circle some big sedans would envy. Ford have clearly talked to drivers across a number of trades to develop this machine — the winner of the International Van of the Year award in the year of its release. If you’re looking for a hard working vehicle to drive business growth, it’s definitely a good place to start.

Ford’s Transit van series has a been a favourite throughout its history With a distinguished track record as not only the van of choice for couriers, BBC film crews and countless tradespeople since its inception in the 1960s, but also holding the dubious honour of being the first choice of British bank robbers. Statistics can be strange things sometimes. Still, the tradies and crims alike — along with touring bands, moving companies and florists — latched on to the transit’s blend of space, handling and power in an era when most vans possessed the shape and relative velocity of toasters. Now, as Ford dominate the light commercial landscape with their Ranger utility, it’s a good time to look at its high-sided stablemate, which is racking up the honours in its own right. The Ford Transit Custom is striking for a few reasons as soon as it pulls into view. The first is that it does away with the fallacy that vans should be plain sheet metal boxes on wheels. A dash of the same design flair which has made the new Mustang a must-have can be seen from the front grille all the way down the deeply speed-creased sides. In the cockpit it’s far less like the old traditional van’s three-seater ‘church pew’ and more like the front of a modern sedan, with controls — including Ford’s sublime Sync II digital suite — befitting a car rather than a cargo hauler. An especially nice touch is the removal of the traditional van’s dog-leg shifter, replacing either an additional stalk off

Bringing it all together by Andy Bryenton
How do you improve on one of the most beloved, most sold, most driven cars in the world? On a vehicle so ubiquitous that it’s a safe bet that every single person reading this page has at least been a passenger in one? Can you, to be very specific, change the recipe by adding modern technology to the mix? Or will the outcome be a bit like adding hot chilli to hokey pokey icecream? These must have been the questions which faced Toyota engineers working to create the newest generation of the Corolla. The figures alone for this nametag are staggering — they start with 40 million sold, and encompass production in factories as far flung as Cambridge, Canada, and Bangalore, India. Would you dare change the winning formula of a reliable, economical family car with a small-displacement petrol engine, cheerful styling and eleven generations of success? Well, Toyota have. But they’ve done it in a way which even hypercar makers like Ferrari and McLaren can’t fault. Because like the LaFerrari and the P1, the new Corolla is a hybrid. Toyota have been the torch-bearing early adopters for hybrid technology. As the makers of the Prius they have polarised opinions, won over Hollywood stars, and made the thought of a petrolelectric powertrain a common sight on our roads and in our supermarket carparks. They took the hybrid idea off
the futurist drawing board and made it normal, making it just another option along with ‘turbo diesel’ and ‘fuel injected’. The Prius may have come to our attention first, but it’s paved the way for many more examples of this fuelsaving tech. And when your vehicle has become so ubiquitous that it can be used to underline the personal politics of cartoon dog Brian Griffin, you know you’ve made it. The Corolla hybrid builds on the winning style and already frugal fuel economy of the Corolla GLX hatch. Its 1.8 litre petrol engine is given a boost with the on-tap torque of an electric motor, just like the pavement-scorching P1. It’s all designed to come together smoothly, seamlessly — so that all you notice with the hood down is the lack of trips to the petrol pump. Delivering 4.1 litres per 100 kilometres, it’s an impressively responsive little hatchback with electric oomph off the line and big savings across its lifespan. Better yet, it’s a Corolla — so it’s down to earth,
MORE SELECTION! MORE SERVICE! MORE VALUE!
Toyota’s Corolla hybrid has been further refined from this early motor show reveal, taking cues from the Corolla GLX
unobtrusive and fits like a glove. You’ll be generating less carbon, which is great
for the planet. But you’ll also be doing it with subtlety, and that’s a class act.

RURAL WHEELS
Next generational game changer by our motoring specialist
Subaru’s dominance of the world rally scene in the 1990s began with the rise of the deep blue, four-wheel drive missile they called the WRX. A beast on and off the track — where a road-going variant became a favourite with tuners and fast-fours afficionados — the WRX started life lean and mean. As generations passed, however, it gained all the weight associated with driver comforts and modern safety features, while its arch rival the Mitsubishi Evo sailed over the edge of twitchy performance. When the WRX was king, one of the favourite models on offer was a four door station wagon, combining a
little practicality with the turbocharged madness. New Zealand took to the WRX wagon with enthusiasm, matched by our love affair with other ‘estate’ Subarus — the ubiquitous silver Legacy enjoyed the dubious honour for some time of being our nation’s most stolen car. Then came our new automotive crush, the SUV, and wagons of every marque faded into the sunset. Today, in most showrooms, the crossover 4x4 rules the roost, with very few true station wagons to be found.

MULE 610 4WD
A distinctive name for a car with big boots to fill. The WRX successor does it with style
That’s why the new Subaru Levorg is bucking all kinds of trends. It’s a wagon in a world of compact sedans and crossover SUVs. It picks up where the WRX of the past left off. With the new Legacy 3.6 turning heads but not available with all that extra boot space, it’s slotting into the Subaru stable with big boots to fill in both directions. Setting aside the very distinctive name — which has been compared to that of a James Bond villain — it’s refreshingly easy to see what the Levorg is about. The WRX wagon may have skipped a generation, but it’s back with an aggressive and angular new facelift and the requisite smooth boxer-configured 2 litres under the hood to offer up 197
kilowatts of power. All the precision and poise of the regular WRX is right here despite the different rear roofline — a small feat of engineering magic. The best accolade anyone could give is that it evokes the feeling of the old original WRX wagon, and it’s clear that great lengths have been gone to to achieve just that. But the final clue — and a bit of a surprise — is hidden in the name of the Levorg. It stands for LEgacy eVOlution touRinG — meaning that this diminutive dynamo is in fact meant to replace not just the WRX but the faithful old Legacy as well, and that finally, unthinkably — Subaru have produced an Evo.

Northlands new state highway A new state highway has been created in Northland, creating a stronger link between the forestry industry and the port. From Monday August 1, Te Pua Road, Mangakahia Road, Otaika Valley Road and Loop Road (north) will officially become State Highway 15 with the New Zealand Transport Agency taking over the operation and maintenance of the 96 kilometres of roads. “These roads are an important link between Northland’s 50 thousand hectares of forestry and its ability to move timber products off-shore at the port,” said Transport Minister Simon Bridges. “Changing the roads to a state highway will ensure there are three strong routes connecting Northland, making the network more resilient to unplanned incidents and weather events and balancing the needs of local communities, tourists and light and heavy vehicles.” The new State Highway 15 joins State Highway 1 at Loop Road (north), which is being upgraded as part of the government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Package announced in 2014. “Providing safe and resilient transport connections, for freight, the local communities and visitors, is key to the

government’s commitment to supporting Northland’s economic growth,” says Mr Bridges. The Transport Agency will now begin work to bring these roads up to state highway standard which will include improvements to litter removal, drainage and vegetation clearance. “In the longer term there will be better road maintenance, line markings and signage. Improvements to road safety will also form part of the government’s ongoing commitment to managing this part of the network.”
