The good news came as hundreds of apple growers and industry players descended on Napier for Pipfruit New Zealand’s annual two-day conference. “The apple industry continues to grow and is a significant contributor to the Hawkes Bay and New Zealand economies with a goal to achieve $1bn in export returns by 2022,” says Pipfruit New Zealand chief executive Alan Pollard. “Although the outlook is bright we focussed our conference this year on challenging and disrupting industry thinking about what the future may hold. “We must not get complacent. We need to continually keep improving and stay ahead of our competitors as the NZ apple industry is transforming into a billion-dollar export business.” The World Apple Report, recently released, ranks New Zealand first over 33 major apple producing countries ahead of Chile and the United States.

AERIAL WORK

Mr Pollard said it is a great achievement to have a competitive edge over the rest of the world and to keep holding that position. “The apple industry has doubled exports in the last four years so our provinces are prospering from this success. We are growing hundreds of full-time jobs across the sector in all areas including production, post-harvest, logistics, marketing and exports,” he says. “We expect to see over one million apple trees planted in New Zealand this year and nurseries have three-year back orders as growers work to meet a growing international demand for New Zealand apples.” At the conference Sir Ray Avery spoke about disruptive thinking, Dr Andre de Barros Teixeira discussed innovation, technology, R&D and marketing, and Dame Diane Robertson addressed the impact of big data on consumers and markets.

Ballance Farm Environment Awards Farmers and growers are encouraged to enter the 2018 Ballance Farm Environment Awards, organised by the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust to promote land stewardship by showcasing sustainable farming. Entries opened on August 1 and operate within 11 regions, following regional council boundaries, each with their own judging timetable. Winners are announced in early 2018. NZFE Trust National Judging coordinator Andrea Hanna says all farmers and horticulturists, including orchardists, vegetable growers and viticulturists, are eligible to enter. “Most people participate because they want high quality feedback from independent rural professionals which they can use to improve their business. It’s not just targeted at top farmers. Every farmer should take the opportunity to enter,” says Mrs Hanna. “The awards prove good farming practices and sound business management go hand in hand. Farmers who participate in the awards programme are also encouraged to share ideas and innovations with the wider farming community.” The judging teams have a wide range of skills and look at all parts of the farming business. Judging is conducted in a relaxed and friendly manner and

Many past entrants say their involvement has helped their personal development because they get to meet and be inspired by a range of like-minded people. It costs nothing to enter and the awards programme offers excellent educational opportunities for any farmer and grower who is interested in improving the sustainability of their farming business including key social, economic and environmental outcomes. climatic factors are taken into account. “In the past we’ve found farmers can be reluctant to enter if their farm has been affected by wet weather or drought, but the judges know severe climatic events are part of farming and will look beyond this at the wider picture,” Mrs Hanna says.

The opportunity to attend an Artificial Breeding (AB) course to discover the ins and outs of artificial insemination on cows was something Sesika Payne decided she would like to do as she works toward her future rural life.

F

arming is a dream Sesika has had for some years and she says although she was brought up in the city, the country is where her heart is. “I am from a Tongan family and grew up in West Auckland in the 1980s and have wonderful rural childhood memories. Back then it was still quite rural, and I used to hear the cows in the morning mooing and would look out the window to see them on the hills walking in a straight line back from the cow shed and I loved that,” says Sesika. “I would go and watch my uncles at the yards when they went to kill a beast or pig for the freezer. “Back in the 80s you were allowed to home kill and coming from a Tongan

family it was part of our culture. Pacific Islanders eat a lot of pork so the pig farmers were happy because it was always in high demand, but now we buy small pigs direct from the butchers.” In 1999 Sesika started working for the Ministry for Primary Industries as a quarantine officer. “Part of our responsibilities is to risk assess arriving passengers for biosecurity risk goods coming into the country — it is really interesting. We also carry out aircraft clearance too, including private aircraft. I am fortunate and feel my work at MPI gives me more understanding of how we support the primary industries. It has made me more aware and vigilant about the need to stop biosecurity risk goods at the border

Sesika Payne has dreamt of farming since she was young

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

such as animal and plant products and used equipment that could carry seeds, soil, and insects which could endanger our country’s agriculture and horticulture industry.” The MPI detector dogs are trained to help find such things including items sent through the postal system and also the airport pathway. When biosecurity risk items are located, MPI staff check to see if they are a danger or not. “We still need the community to help as it is a united effort and I am sure people would be devastated if items they brought into our country caused an outbreak that could bring our island nation to its knees. We need to eliminate risks together and it is always better to declare goods on your passenger declaration card when arriving from overseas.” Sesika purchased a small farm with a partner four years ago and upskilled her farming knowledge. “My farming confidence picked up and I became more passionate about the farming lifestyle,” she says. “I learnt about all things farming including fencing, drenching, calving and fixing water leaks. All of a sudden I was a city girl wearing gumboots. “I brought chickens and sold the eggs to friends and met lots of like-minded people in the chook world and we bred our own dry stock. I castrated bulls and ran the farm for a period of time by myself. We stayed doing our day jobs and I took time off work during calving season to ensure things went ok.” Sesika says a city girl can be a successful farmer and she encourages others to follow their country dreams. “I decided to do an AB course recently to get an idea of what it is about. I was the only girl on the course and it was interesting listening to the guys talk about things such as how they operated their farms. The course teaches everything you need to know

SAFETY FIRST To upskill her farming knowledge Sesika attended an AB course to learn more about breeding

and at first we practised on artificial cows. We learnt how to locate and handle the cow’s cervix and insert the inseminator into it. “I found it a challenge as AB was so new to me. Ninety percent of the procedure actually is in the mind and you have to be relaxed because the cow needs to be relaxed too for things to go well. The trainers were very supportive and encouraging. “For me, the experience was a personal achievement. Knowing I can do it is huge and I plan to go back and complete the course. “My dream is to own my own block and my family and friends are supportive of that dream. The opportunities that come with a rural life are life changing.”

The miniature BY ANN MORGAN Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven is a rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Jennifer and Lindsay Heperi for mini horses from across New Zealand, specialising in rehabilitating laminitis and grass-affected miniature horses.

“W

e care for minis, Shetlands and small ponies. We have two donkeys at present amongst our family of 21 fur kids,” says Jen. “We came about creating The Haven after being asked to help some wee minis that needed care. The owners didn’t realise that they are different to big horses and we learnt about laminitis when we took in a rescue mare with a one-day-old foal and it was a big learning curve. Jenny Patterson from Calm Healthy Horses is Jen’s mentor. “Jenny has taught me so much and supports us with her amazing nutritional products. We also have regular volunteers including a home schooling family, and a photographer.

“Five years down the track we have a special feeding programme. Some horses arrive and can hardly walk. Laminitis is like walking on crushed glass. “Laminitis has become a big problem across the country especially with fast growing rye and clover grass. These are high in potassium and sugars and so are muesli and commercial feeds. Many owners don’t add salt and this can contribute to a laminitis attack when lush green grass is added into the mix. This can make a horse become grass affected.” Jen says minis are often labelled little brats and are known for behavior problems due to being treated like large dogs. “This gives a completely wrong impression of how awesome

they are. If you don’t understand about potassium and sugars in the grasses, and metabolic syndrome, you are quietly killing them.” Horses get Equine Metabolic Syndrome if they are fed mostly grass. Warning signs include a big thick hard cresty neck and fat lump pads on their body. “Signs of a grass affected horse include twitching and not standing nicely when you put the bridle and gear on.” The couple built three ‘paradise tracks’, special yards with untreated post peelings so the animals walk on a soft surface, carpeted shelter huts, and they have macrocarpas to get shade. “We have rehabilitated more than 30 laminitics in three years. They get their feet soaked in epsom salts and are given magnetic pulse blanket treatments. The nutritional programme involves adding salt, Grazezy, S.O.S and Premium Minerals, and hay is soaked and has no clover or rye in it. “They start on the painkiller Bute, and then are weaned onto a natural pain remedy made specially by Jill Shires and it takes two to four days to see a slight improvement followed by more improvement each day. Chronically affected horses take up to five weeks to become comfortable. At two weeks a horse may lightly trot and by week four they can canter again. “We build up their trust and they have the run of seven acres and come and go as they please. “Rescuing and retraining is easy. Rehoming is difficult. We are extremely protective and ensure those we do let foster know exactly how to care for them. “We recently became a charitable trust after five years of funding ourselves with help from many kind folk

because they keep growing and the animal cannot eat. Feet need to be trimmed regularly and they need good quality hay. “We love giving horses that are in so much pain their life back. The biggest reward is seeing them run around the tracks, playing, galloping and chasing. I often cry because we saw them start out crippled. We don’t know what goes on behind the hidden hedges, but quality hay warms their bellies and good shelter keeps them out of the wind and rain. “They are what they eat so therefore they are what we feed them.” Check out ‘Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven’ on Facebook.

pretty much always been involved in the industry in one way or another.” Nina says the stock team often talk about the hens that follow them around the house when they are doing their checks. They also have a real pecking order and it is very interesting watching them interact. “The hens all have their own personalities and there are always one or two characters that no matter how many times you put them back over the fence with their flock, the next day they are out again.” Inside the houses the hens always have access to fresh feed and water. “We work with nutritionists to provide a balanced diet to meet the hens’ nutritional requirements. Our feed is made here in the South Island by our sister company, MainFeeds.” These mixes are a blend of locally grown wheat and barley, plant proteins and essential vitamins and minerals. Outside on the range the hens forage, scratching around for worms and bugs enjoying their natural behaviour. The ideal weather for a hen out on the range is an overcast misty day. A lot of people presume that the hens would prefer a clear sunny day but they are always fearful of attack from above so feel a lot more comfortable under clouds. This is also why trees and shelter are so important. “Our own hens are reared at our dedicated free range rearing farm. As with all livestock for production, rearing is a very important part of the chain — it is essential we do this part ourselves so the hens arrive at our laying farms

in the best condition.” The hens are set up for laying and prepared for their new environment at the laying farm. “When consumers buy Woodland eggs they can be 100 per cent sure they are authentic free range. Every egg will be stamped and have the Woodland tree symbol and a code — this can be used on Woodland’s website to show where each egg was laid,” says Michael Guthrie, managing director of Mainland Poultry Limited. “As New Zealand’s leading producer of free range eggs, we were naturally very concerned about recent allegations that a small number of cage eggs may have been marketed as being free range. “This compelled us to fast-track our plans to guarantee the provenance of our eggs by providing complete traceability from the farm to the consumer’s kitchen. “At all the farms, the eggs are collected daily to ensure freshness. We stamp each egg at the barn where we collect them, so there can be no question that it is, in fact, a genuine Woodland free range egg.” The technology was developed in the Netherlands by Nuovo. It uses safe food grade ink, so the egg is completely unaffected by the stamping process. Maurik Wouters, owner of Nuovo says egg stamping for traceability is already regulation in the EU as part of the European standard and has been in effect since 2012. Woodland is the first brand to implement this in New Zealand and they now operate to the world standard for traceability. “It is a matter of principle for us to give our customers 100 per cent

9

The social birds interact with each other and all have their own unique personalities confidence that our eggs are genuinely free range,” Michael says. “The demand for free range eggs is growing

strongly, and as the recent outcry has shown, consumers want to be assured that they get the genuine product.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

Rural women in the limelight Since the very early days of visiting farms and pushing my multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, I always made an effort to get both partners around the table so that they could understand the true benefits of a BioGro certified natural fertiliser, how it reacts within the soil, increasing humus (carbon), which holds both minerals and water, releasing these to the plant on request.

100

The raw materials we use to produce our fertilisers come directly out of the environment so they have no impact on the environment — they are completely safe and sustainable. It’s amazing, the reliance some farmers have for chemical fertilisers and the NPK balance sheet theory — a false theory at that, with no science behind it. As the main nurturers of life, farming women

are always open to alternative farming methods and alternative medicines which have been strongly promoted by Tineke from Homeopathic Farm Services (HFS). She has won a few awards over the years for her efforts. So, in today’s farming world there will be some changes taking place, but I believe they will be more conservative and more focussed on producing better stock feed from the farm — keeping it simple and effective, after all rumen animals are the best converters of grass into protein, milk and meat. Don’t be tricked into fodder beet, kale and other non-grass products. The only ones that gain here are the corporations, and please note that they’re all offshore corporations. Stick with grass. There are plenty of top quality grass seed merchants in New Zealand, without needing to go offshore — let’s back our own people. As a small independent NZ owned natural fertiliser company, we are already fielding strong enquiry from farmers that have lost faith in the NPK chemical system — it is harsh on both the farm and the environment. Agrissentials natural certified system works together with Mother Nature,

storing minerals within the organic matter, building humus for better water retention within the soil, increasing microbial wealth within the soil which attracts strong numbers of worms setting up a recycling system that captures all waste falling upon the farm, back into top soil. This is a major recycling system taking all the dead life back through the crucible of life to regenerate new life and new soil. Using Agrissentials fertilisers you can install this live, recycling system on your farm which will be regenerating top soil for your farm — how good is that, working with Mother Nature on your side. So, to all those farming mums and farming women who are shoulder to shoulder with their partners doing the daily chores, day in and day out, we take this opportunity to thank them and all farmers throughout the land for driving our agriculture system forward. Managing urinary nitrogen on your farm How much can we learn from a handful of grass? The answer is both remarkably simple and incredibly complex — but thankfully, modern scientific techniques can assess the biology and chemistry of just such a sample to provide some clear-cut advice for adjusting farming practices. It’s all thanks to a Kiwi company who are leading the world. Raymond Burr from QLabs is a farmer first and a man of science in equal measure. From his early days share farming sheep and beef to converting a large spread to dairy in the King Country in ‘89, he knows the challenges farmers face in a constant race to improve their profitability. Raymond studied at Massey University, and his investigations into soil

BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY

and pasture health with QLabs today would have amazed his professors back then. Then again, the foundation of what QLabs offer the farming sector is based on sound common sense. QLabs have been granted a patent on their latest form of herbage analysis, which can very accurately look at the nutritional content of even a small representative 500gram sample of grass and drill down into its composition. • Proactively manage your animals’ urinary Nitrogen • Now YOU can control your Ruminant Nitrogen Utilisation Efficiency (RNUE) • Qlabs new patented method is now available

One major advantage is detecting levels of nitrogen, which cannot be stored by ruminant animals like cattle. This means a very accurate forecast of urinary nitrogen content can be built up — a valuable tool for evaluating efficient farm management. Qlabs patented method means that with a single test of a sample of pasture a farmer can fine tune and plan ahead for a number of factors. Environmental responsibility is one, but maximising the nutrition of every square foot of pasture is another — and that means better yields whether for dairy and drystock. Potential health issues can be nipped in the bud long before they become a vet’s problem. “The science may be high

tech, but the principle is simple,” says Raymond. “Arm yourself with knowledge and get the optimum out of your farm.” In the 1980s the rising plate meter was invented by a farmer, and accurate pasture budgeting soon followed. From the early 1990s we became proficient at growing more protein by applying more Nitrogen. It is time to move on with the latest patented method invented by an ex-farmer. Now for a relatively low cost, you can monitor what your ruminating animals are about to eat. Increasing efficiency will increase profitability and decrease your environmental impact — a winwin solution.

in eaves and ensure rodents have not set up home in your ceiling, garage or garden shed. Adding a protective netting to the gutter helps prevent leaves and other debris clogging the spouting. If you see nails lifted on your roof or cracked tiles, get the issues rectified as often damage is further than the eye can see. A single nail hole or crack allows a large amount of water to enter a roof. If the iron is past its best, enquire about re roofing as this will increase the life of your house. Roof leaks cause more issues than people realise, including structure damage, ceiling

mould and rot. Keep decks and steps scrubbed and clear of slime to avoid slips and falls. If you have a septic tank, ensure this is cleared yearly. It is also advisable to clean the water tank for health reasons — ideally twice a year. Check your smoke alarms are in working order. Lots of homes fitted with smoke alarms remain unprotected due to flat or missing batteries. Prevention is one of the best forms of protection. Doing the best you can to make your home your castle will ensure the time off you have will be beneficial for yourself and those around you.

Sheltering your block Planning of the layout of your garden and giving your property a personal touch is all part of the excitement when you purchase a lifestyle block or small property. It is advisable to take time to plan the best locations for your plantings and ensure what you choose is well suited to the land and climate you live in. There are trees, shrubs and plants available to suit every situation. It is selecting the incorrect plants that is one of the biggest reasons for failure. Talk to your local gardening store or landscaper for ideas, look through magazines and ask others living in the area what they find grows best. Depending on rainfall and your soil type, the suggested time for planting is around May through to September. If starting from scratch ensure you allow enough space for lawns, large trees and perhaps a pond if you enjoy water lilies. Shelter is an important

consideration. Having a good windbreak will give protection for yourself and your animals. Trees can be grown in a single row, clusters or multiple rows. They can include evergreen, deciduous, mixed species or single such as Poplars, Alders and Pine. Often planting large trees provides good amounts of shade. Plan the areas that are best to place shelter and shade for your animals. If there is wetland, native riparian plantings can also attract native birds. Shelter belts offer many beneficial attributes to any rural property. They screen livestock from cold, wet and windy weather. In summer they provide shade for stock of all types, reducing heat stress. They also reduce moisture

loss in grass and crops from drying winds. Plantings are also useful for hill stabilisation and preventing slips. Planting rows or clusters of trees is ideal for creating privacy or blocking out unwanted views such as buildings, neighbouring houses or roads. Ensure your fencing is in place before introducing animals to your block. Horses and cattle have long reaches, so it is best to fence 1.5m to 2m from your new plantings. Goats and sheep are good at reaching underneath a fence as well to get to the seedlings and

vegetables which may be in their reach. A common mistake made in rural landscaping includes fencing driveways too close or narrowly so there is not enough room to plant trees on either side. People often enjoy the aesthetics of a tree-lined driveway. Make sure the trees you choose have enough room to grow out and up to avoid disappointment in future years. Planting on your property is an investment which adds value over time, doing it right the first time does pay off in the long term.

Pass any new build or home relocation and you find something missing — the surrounding area may well be a desert with the tracks of building equipment, mud and detritus still dominating the landscape. It is often last on the list, but transformation is rather easily achieved with your first start being the garden. What a difference a lawn and shrubs can make! Tailoring the look of your home’s exterior is one way to create a space that reflects your personality. There are many cheap landscaping ideas you can tackle on your own that are high impact without a high price tag. While that may involve a trip to your local garden centre, neighbours and friends may be a good source of supply as there are myriad plants that will thrive from cuttings. So before you head to the commercial outlets, take a look over the fence. There may be flowers or foliage that obviously enjoy your local environment and will easily transplant. In quick order, you may establish vibrancy where mud prevailed. Having established that landscaping doesn’t require a big

budget, start to think outside the square. Pavers, cobblestones, tiles and wood can greatly enhance your surroundings when interspersed with grassland and garden plots. Re-use stuff that is low maintenance and cheap. This writer remembers a wonderful court yard of crazy paving outside a Kiwi home, and in fact one of the components was part of an old gravestone that came from a building site. It made for an interesting conversation piece over cocktails. Something else that doesn’t require a big budget is water, and with a little ingenuity, a small waterfall over rocks, a gold-fish pool, or a tinkling fountain is easily created. Get creative. A cheap landscaping idea that creates great

visual impact is the use of pavers and ground cover. If you have unused ground space in your yard or bare earth you’d like to cover up, use recycled or broken pavers in a mosaic pattern of your choice. Perhaps you live near the coast as a great percentage of Kiwis do. In this case a beachcombing trip should provide some interesting driftwood, and wiring some bits together with a lick of wood preservative or paint could lead to some cool garden sculptures. Throw in a pergola perhaps, some climbing roses, a little garden furniture, and suddenly, you’ll find a home, outside the house, a place for summer fun and relaxation. Now — a place for the barbecue, and maybe — a pool.

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Paving/Concrete Retaining Walls

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Fencing is an art

When it comes to farming, lifestyle blocks, landscaping and home fences, the options are many and the ideal choice is a decision that can visually enhance the look of a property, strengthen the boundary and be practical and affordable, or it can be more opulent and made of stone or have a designer look. Fencing can cause major issues and is something that both neighbours need to agree on, including lifestyle block owners. The Fencing Act 1978 sets out your rights and responsibilities for fences between properties. When trying to decide on what sort of fence to erect, the Fencing Act 1978 suggests adequate fences for urban and rural settings. Suggested fences for rural properties include a seven or eight wire fence and a nine or ten wire fence. If you have animals and the fence is not adequate to keep them in, and your dog or livestock gets out of your property and wanders onto the road, or onto another property, you are liable for the damage and repairs cost. Brad from Brad Brien Fencing Ltd in Mangawhai says he makes most styles of fences including batten, post and rail and Punga or fancy and artistic styles. “Lifestyle block owners often discover after purchase that they don’t have enough fences and call me to help them sort out what they need,” says Brad. “They often need paddocks rearranged and for this post and rail or the conventional seven wire batten fence are usually used. It depends on what stock you have, such as sheep, cattle, or horses. I have built a chicken

fence for a customer and gave them a lot of space to live in with toys and things. They really liked it. We also moved one fence out of the vision line for a lady as it was originally built too close to her house.” Brad says deciding if you need new fencing is relatively easy. “When you move onto a property, check if your fences are in a good state. Walk the whole fence line and check if your wires are tight. “Make sure there are no broken wires or loose and rotting posts. If you have the old batten fences with moss all over them and in disrepair it’s often cheaper to build a new one.” He says sheep need seven wire batten, cows you can get away with five wires and make it electric, but if it is a boundary fence you require at least a seven wire batten for strength. “Bulls need a lot of power and solid fencing to keep them in, especially if they fight each other as they get boisterous and can easy break through a fence. With rural fencing, internal fences can be put where ever you like. If you want a triangle paddock, a hexagon or octagon we can make one, and in the near future we will be designing creative custom-made entrance gates. These will certainly add a flair to any property.”

Pruning for maximum productivity by Erica Faber, orchard productivity manager, Just Avocados Ltd

A number of growers are facing the daunting task of pruning as their avocado trees grow to unmanageable heights causing lack of light in the orchard, declining production and increasing costs. Pruning is an essential avocado orchard management practice that should take place for the entire life of the trees. If done correctly, and in a simple uniform way, it can improve orchard productivity, tree performance, and orchard management. In the early years of the tree’s life, pruning is aimed at manipulating growth for an improved fruit bearing structure that will achieve optimum yield. In later years, and with unpruned trees showing decline, the emphasis shifts to promoting rejuvenation and ensuring maximum sunlight to penetrate the tree canopy. As trees grow taller and denser, the lower and interior limbs lose their ability to produce fruit because of increased shading. Over time, most fruit will be produced on the outer periphery of the tree primarily at the top, as this is exposed to the most sunlight. Unfortunately, the top of the tree is also where the most wind damage, sunburn, and poorer quality fruit occurs as spray penetration to these heights can be less effective. The cost of managing and harvesting unpruned trees proportionally increases with the tree height, resulting in smaller returns. There are predominantly two

types of pruning — heading cuts/ tipping and thinning. Heading cuts or tipping removes the growing point thereby breaking apical dominance and stimulating lateral bud break and branching. Thinning is used to increase light penetration by removing competing or crowding shoots or limbs. The advantages of regular pruning: • Improved light distribution into the canopy which is essential for flower bud development, fruit set and growth. • Improved bearing structure which increases production potential and encourages regular crops. • Growth of new shoots with high quality flower buds. • Better spray penetration and therefore improved pest control. • Better air movement throughout the canopy, improving drying conditions and reduced severity of fungal diseases. • Successful regrowth of diseased or damaged wood. Consistency is key. There are many approaches to and opinions on pruning being discussed in the

Avocado trees pruned using a uniform approach down the row on one face of the tree to increase light into the canopy and encourage a productive structure. Newly exposed branches are protected from sunburn with a wash of white acrylic paint, water and copper oxychloride that can either be painted or sprayed on

industry. Whichever approach you decide to apply, ensure that you remain consistent and apply it to each tree so that the resultant light penetration within the tree and orchard is uniform. Understanding the tree’s response to pruning cuts and managing the pruning

regrowth is essential in ensuring that the pruning undertaken has been effective and worthwhile. If you are unsure or would like any support or advice on pruning, please contact Just Avocados for an on-orchard visit — www.justavocados.co.nz.

Where talent is thriving

In something of a retro experience, Wearable Arts competitions which put capital cities on the world stage has come back to ‘community’ New Zealand, where rural towns vie with the metropolis to prove talent is universal. An idea from Nelson sculptor Suzie Moncrieff in 1987 which “took art off the walls and onto the stage” grew into an international attraction in the World of Wearable Arts, a Wellington highlight event which attracted international attention. Now it is the turn of provincial communities and Nor thland is no exception. The first event was established in Paparoa some years ago, and as the 7th annual Waipu Wearable Arts Show wowed competitors and spectators last month, all eyes are now turned to the Dargaville Wearable Arts Extravaganza, just weeks away on September 15 and 16 at the Dargaville Town Hall. In typical country fashion, those behind the hugely successful Art ’n’ Tartan Wearable Art Contest and Show at the Celtic Barn, Waipu over the weekend of July 21 and 22 are throwing their support behind the Dargaville event, which is promoted by the Dargaville Arts Association with support from the Dargaville Community

Development Board. Dargaville has the theme of ‘Dream Time’ and entries have flooded in from across Northland with the organisers already warning that accommodation will soon be at a premium. “It’s an amazing chance to have a lot of fun, let your dreams and imagination go wild and design a costume that will be a show stopper,” says co-organiser Cheryl Carmichael. “I jumped at the opportunity to be involved when I was asked, and having formed such an enthusiastic production crew to work together, I’m really excited our town is able to host such an amazing event.” There are four categories and no major restrictions on design apart from being wearable throughout both nights of the show, and trophies and cash prizes are abounding. “Our vision is to showcase our talent, our businesses and our spectacular area to the wider Northland audience,” said Cheryl. The two days also offer visitors the chance to stay over the weekend and

revor, his wife Cheryl and their children are all involved with producing ‘Northland Honey Naturally’ and it all stemmed from the suggestion of getting a hobby. “Mum told Dad that he should find a hobby and he looked into bees. He doesn’t do anything on a small scale, and that weekend he went off to join the local bee club and that was the beginning of our bee adventure,” says their daughter Deana. Kevin and Melissa Wallace were president and secretary/treasurer at the time and Deana says the couple were pivotal in establishing the Whangarei Bee Club and honey extraction plant.

THE BARFOOTE FAMILY ARE ALL INVOLVED IN THE BUSINESS OF MAKING HONEY ON THEIR FARM “I remember being dragged along to meetings as an 11-year-old and listening about bees, and Dad volunteering his work site for the club’s honey extraction plant to be built on. “I thought my mum wouldn’t be very happy with his decision, but eight years down the track we have 25-30 hives, and a growing demand for our lovely tasting honey.” The extraction machine puts the hive frames through a spinner removing the

honey out and cleans it. It is then placed into containers. “Bee clubs are a fountain of information, support and experience, especially when it comes to disease and protection from disease. With an increase in hobby beekeepers we run the risk of an increase in disease as bees travel about 4-5km on their daily search for food. “With the varroa mite coming to New Zealand a lot of wild bee hives

Bees are more work than a goldfish, but less than a dog. The summer months are the busiest time for a beekeeper and for the bees, focusing on hive health, hive management and collection of stores for honey. The winter is a quiet time for the bees; an opportunity for them to have a rest from being busy bees.

How much honey will I get? You can expect approximately 35-55kg of honey from one hive with 2x honey boxes/supers.

When to start? Spring is the best time to collect your bees and start a hive. You can either buy them online or catch your own swarm of bees – exciting! The bees are growing in strength and building up their colony in preparation for the honey flow. Fivestar Bee Hive Components are hand made by our team. Built to last, our design has been developed to meet the needs of New Zealand Bee Keepers.

How long do bees live? During the summer, worker bees have a life span of 15-38 days. In the Autumn months they have a longer life span of 30-60 days. The Queen bee can live for 3-5 years.

BUZZ ABOUT BEES have been unable to survive so we are actually reliant on the domestic hives. “Dad would often receive phone calls from the council when there were swarms of bees on people’s properties. He would race out with his car packed with bee boxes in the boot to collect them. “Some hives would be stuck in unusual places but he always had a way of getting it into the box. “Having dad as excited about bees as he was when I was a young teen made me think he was having a midlife crisis, but I understand his enthusiasm now that I am older. Bees are amazing creatures and very important.” Deana says the combination they have of bush and garden flowers develops into a great blend of flavours. “We are near mangroves and they flower around late March when there isn’t a lot of plants flowering. Mangrove flowers produce a lovely flavour. “Bees have a lifespan of around six weeks during the honey flow. Each bee makes approximately one teaspoon of honey. “There is only one bee that lays eggs in the hive and that is the queen. She is larger than normal bees. There can be two queens, and if there isn’t enough room in the box one will take off and some will go with her creating a swarm. These are usually pretty docile. “You can put excluders in the boxes meaning the queen can only lay eggs in one box because she is too big to get

through the gaps. This means there is good useable honey in the other boxes. “I enjoy helping with the hives and appreciate that they are really beneficial to our environment. “They are very important in our ecosystems and without them we wouldn’t be able to have trees, flowers, crops or fruit. “By having hives, we are making sure that future generations can benefit from the pollination needed for our plants. Deana and her sister Jessica are now keeping the family hives running and are using the funds to pay for their university degrees. “I am studying a four year Ag Science degree at Lincoln and Jessica is applying to physiotherapy or sport and recreation at AUT in Auckland next year and we plan to come out of study debt free. “Bees are helpful little creatures. When dad first got interested in bees, we got him the bee movie. It really helped us understand the life of bees. “Honey has a long life as it doesn’t go off. It has many benefits, especially the Manuka. It heals wounds beautifully and we use it for coughs and colds. It is interesting how many people are going back to basics and the natural medicines. “Bees are endangered now and I encourage others to get involved with them. The 368ha Northland farm, a 16-shareholder farm equity managed by Joe and Jemima Foster, won the Northland Regional title for the second year running before coming runner up in the national competition and winning the award for High Input Farm with the Best Financial Performance. The system 5 farm, milking 1190 crossbred cows, produced 1645 kgMS/ ha in the 2015-16 season, on which the competition was judged — a lot of which was attributed to the use of supplementary feed and concentrates, and pasture consumed at 61.6%. Judges said the competitive advantage was Okaihau Pastoral’s high proportion of home-grown forage (94%), helping to keep the cost of consumed feed low at $292/tDM. Foster grows 80ha of maize silage on dairy support land, harvesting a 20-tonne crop, and feeds the supplement year-round, but primarily from late summer to the end of mating as a tool to best utilise pasture. Foster says there are several reasons they grow and feed maize, which is an inexpensive and reliable crop to grow

in Northland. “It puts condition on the cows, it gives a good balance to the other feeds we use, and it’s environmentally friendly,” he says. “We utilise the effluent solids into our fertiliser system.” Foster says their heavy use of maize silage meant using “any old brand” was a risk they weren’t willing to take. “As maize silage is such a big part of the cow’s diet, it’s too risky to buy maize seed from just any company,” he says. “We chose Pioneer maize because it’s a trusted brand.” Although Foster’s farm has a generous annual rainfall, New Zealand’s Far North is prone to summer drought which can result in low pasture production and decreased crop yields. Because of this, and due to the farm’s leaf disease issues, Pioneer representative Stephen Ball recommended they plant Pioneer hybrid P0640. “Leaf disease is a big factor on farm,” Ball said. “We are planting mostly into clay soil so we decided on a mid-maturity hybrid, with strong leaf disease resistance.” Foster attributes a lot of the farm’s success to their farm advisor, Intelact’s

GROUNDWORK, MAIZE PLANTING, SILAGE WORK, PIT & BAILING, MOWING & RAKING

Paul Martin, who encouraged them to enter the Dairy Business of the Year competition and is critical in helping them plan their feed budgets. “We want to take the farm business to the next level, the smart way,” Foster says.

Establishing a crop Growing a crop of maize for silage can be rewarding in many ways as well as profitable, and can be established by direct drilling, minimum tillage or traditional full cultivation. It is best to select your paddock in the early autumn and check it for perennial weeds and apply the necessary substance to control them. Select free draining soil for best results as maize does not like waterlogged soils and excess waterlogging encourages weed growth that can invade the crop. This can reduce maize yields and also impact on the silage quality and palatability. When selecting a paddock consider if it is suitable for the machinery being used and be aware that the distance from the paddock to stack will also come into the cost of harvesting. If it is your first time growing maize consult with your contractor before finalising the site to ensure it is a good choice. It is best to avoid waste weedy areas around the paddock edges as insect infestations can begin in these places and spread into the crop. Carrying out a basic soil test for soil pH, Olsen P, K, Ca, and Mg will help ensure good crop growth. The core sample is normally around 150mm but for maize a deeper sample is needed as its roots are deeper than pasture. A deep N test should be taken once the crop has emerged as the test will confirm the amount of N you may need

to apply. Beware of excessive cultivation which weakens the soil structure and avoid cultivating when the soil is too wet or too dry. Try to achieve a firm seedbed — a well cultivated paddock will help ensure the best strike of your seed and helps your weed and insect control products give the best results. Direct drilling and minimal tillage are well recognised ways to successfully establish maize paddocks. When planning, carefully consider the execution of the required tasks as you only get one chance to complete the job properly. Important factors to consider are soil type and texture, the amount of cultivation that will be required, timing, paddock evenness and potential insect problems. Many of the significant maize establishment insects are controlled with the application of a suitable seed treatment however these will not control grey field slugs. If you find even a few slugs it is recommended to use slug bait before drilling. A consultation with your contractor will help identify the best establishment method. As a rule of thumb the earlier you sow your maize the better it will yield.

Stacking the maize silage Keeping the face of the maize silage stack tight throughout the feed-out period is recommended for keeping the feed supply healthy for your stock. Loose silage allows air to penetrate into the stack meaning aerobic bacteria can break down the plant material producing waste products including carbon dioxide, heat and water. This means the silage quantity and quality will be decreased. The stack should be compacted enough that you can not push your fingers into the stack any further than the depth of your finger nails. When the product is well compacted and sealed mould should not be present as it generally grows once the silage has been exposed to the air for a few days or more. It is recommended to never feed mouldy or ‘rotten’ silage to your stock because some varieties of moulds cause health issues in animals. Avoid digging into the stack as this

loosens silage that will not be fed for several days. Use the tractor bucket carefully and chip the silage down with the bucket and then scoop it up from the ground. It is recommended to introduce maize silage over a 5–10 day period by allocating each animal 1–2kg dry matter and increase the amount each day. It may take a few days to acquire a taste but once it has been introduced to the diet, it is best fed on a daily basis. Animals that have been grass fed only will have relatively low levels of the starch-digesting and high levels of the cellulose-digesting bacteria. Large amounts of maize silage will result in large amounts in the dung. Introducing the feed slowly will allow starch digesting bacteria levels to

increase and improve utilisation and minimise the risk of gastric disturbances or grain overload. Silage can be fed immediately after harvest but maximum aerobic stability gains are made when it is fermented for 30 days prior to feeding. It can be placed in piles, in a line across the paddock or against a fence line. It is important that there is room for the entire herd here to feed at once. Placing silage in a line against a fence prevents the animals from walking and messing in it.

Maize silage is low in crude protein and this makes it an ideal complement to high protein pastures in the spring and autumn. In summer when pasture protein levels can fall and feeding levels should be carefully monitored as too much low protein may result in animals holding or gaining liveweight rather than putting milk in the vat. If pasture is limiting, consider feeding it in conjunction with another protein source such as lucerne, a leafy forage sorghum crop, or high quality pasture silage.

Brilliance through resilience by Scott Shaw

The reality is that to survive farmers and growers must constantly strive to build as much resilience into their operations as they can afford. For many farmers this will mean strategically growing crops to fill feed shortages and/or as a profitable intermediary towards pasture renovation. For those that grow crops this will mean selecting the right species and cultivars/hybrids, and managing them in such a way that they provide near-optimal yields in the good years and optimal yields in the tougher years. To this end Carrfields Grain & Seed, the exclusive licensee of Pacific Seeds brand products here in New Zealand, is introducing a number of key initiatives to assist you to achieve brilliant results, by building resilience into your cropping operations including: Our C4 plan, providing you with reduced seed treatment costs, insurance against crop emergence problems in the form of a full replant guarantee; infield nutritional problem-solving support/ services and a complementary aerial crop inspection on request; as well as a free digital copy of our brandnew Maize Crop Scouting Guide. ABOUT THE HYBRID

George Kung Kung Ag Ltg Hauraki

Being a dairy farmer as well as a maize contractor, I use and recommend products that fit well into both systems. With its excellent stay-green and long harvest window, PAC 624 allows us to toggle between our own and our client’s crops. I know that we are able to push our 624 just that little bit longer if required and harvest our clients blocks before our own. The silage that we get from this hybrid is more gold than green, which is reflected in our feed quality tests, cow condition and milk production.

Full season dual purpose hybrid for northern and central regions.

Firmly positioned as a market leader in this ultra-long maturity group. PAC 624 has earned a reputation for being able to produce true (weighed) 30 tonne crops from Northland to eastern Bay of Plenty. This is a giant of a plant that will produce very high yields at low planting rates. PAC 624 is a purpose-bred silage hybrid for early plant situations in the warmer northern regions. Large girthy cobs packed with soft, starchy grain combined with good digestibility ensures silage of excellent quality is produced. This hybrid has good standability, however the sheer size of the plants means that it can become overcrowded at high planting rates increasing cob height and reducing standability and cob tip fill. For this reason we recommend lower than usual planting rates. A lengthy grain fill period and excellent stay green provide a long harvest window giving growers maximum opportunity to harvest at ideal maturity levels for optimal silage quality. This hybrid performs best in higher yielding situations and only in warm environments when planted before late October. Consider PAC 456 if planting is to be in November.

AREAS OF ADAPTATION

Full season: Northland, northern Waikato and coastal Bay of Plenty.

ABOUT THE HYBRID

Greg Muller G&H Agri Waipa

We grow around 40ha maize to sell to local farmers. We started out with a small area of PAC 456 several years ago but every year we have increased its area due its excellent yield stability, DM yield and quality. PAC 456 has excellent stay green and a very long harvest window which was a great benefit to us this season and my customers were rapt with the quality.

PAC 456 is a tall, high yielding dual purpose hybrid with a large bulky canopy and long harvest window. Purpose bred in Europe for DM and energy production this hybrid is a serious DM and grain production machine. PAC 456 can have a high ear placement particularly if planted at high rates means that planting rates should not go above 90,000 seeds/ ha for grain crops. However, good grain quality, yields and dry down, as well as standability and plant integrity during grain dry down make this hybrid a top performer for both grain and silage. Husk cover is very good, and ears are large and packed with large deep kernels ensuring silage of high grain content and energy.

AREAS OF ADAPTATION

Mid/full season: Northland, BOP, northern Waikato, East Coast, northern Hawke’s Bay. Full season: Central Waikato, central Hawke’s Bay.

Therapy for osteoarthritis Last edition we discussed how high levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) help joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). An excellent 2010 study ‘Chondroitin sulphate in the treatment of osteoarthritis’ (Y. Herotin, PhD) identified the actions of CS on arthritic joints. They identified over 30 positive changes in arthritic joints with high doses of chondroitin sulphate. It is worth noting that the dosages in the study were much higher than in many joint products. Most products have around 250mg of CS whereas the study used 800mg or more. I generally commence therapy even higher with 1500mg of high grade chondroitin. The anti-inflammatory effects of high doses of CS appear to inhibit inflammatory chemicals including prostaglandins and COX-2 enzymes. These are the targets of antiinflammatory drugs which is why they can be effective at reducing pain. Secondly high levels of CS appear to slow the rate of cartilage loss. One suggested mechanism is that CS appears to protect the chondrocyte cells responsible for maintaining cartilage. Research showed that CS can actually prevent the death of chondrocytes which is the real driver behind cartilage loss. Thirdly high levels of CS appear

to be anabolic — it appears to be able to generate new cartilage. The mechanisms here seems to be that CS stimulates chondrocyte cells to increase production of collagen and other compounds needed to make new cartilage. By way of example I have been helping someone with OA in her knees, back and hands. She had been using a joint supplement heavily weighted towards glucosamine rather than chondroitin. We added a supplement with high levels of CS with noticeable improvements on this combination with less pain and more mobility. I am sure the extra curcumin and Omega 3 all helped with these improvements. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Nation’s tastiest steak New Zealand’s most tender and tasty steak was announced at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Steak of Origin competition recently with Tim and Kelly Brittain from Otorohanga accepting the 2017 Grand Champion title for their Angus steak, in the competition’s 15th year. The judges, including renowned chefs, Ben Bayly, Gareth Stewart and Shaun Clouston completed two rounds of judging before the Brittains’ steak was deemed the county’s top from an initial line-up of 64 semi-finalists. Being recognised as the country’s top beef producer is an achievement Tim and Kelly say they are extremely proud of. “Each year our entries into this competition have stepped up a level and I am so proud that all of our work and efforts can be celebrated. This outcome is a significant achievement and something that Kelly and I have been working towards,” says Tim. Chef judge, Shaun Clouston recognises the way in which this competition shines light on the country’s beef farmers, acknowledging that the high quality of beef within the New Zealand food service is down to their fine-tuned farming activities.“The paddock to plate link is one that New Zealanders are really interested in. It is important for us chefs to appreciate this and understand that an outstanding steak dish and dining experience starts well before the restaurant kitchen,” says Shaun. Prior to the judging day,

scientists at Carne technologies tested all 305 of the competition entries to determine the top 20 per cent in each competition class to progress through to judging. The chefs assessed each steak against a set of criteria such as aroma, tenderness, juiciness and taste. The first round of judging determined the medal placings in each class. From here the gold medal winning steaks in each class, excluding Lifestyle, were re-judged to decide the 2017 Grand Champion and the 2017 Brand winner. The competition’s six Best of Breed classes were open to all New Zealand beef farmers and included classes for European, British Angus, British Hereford, British Other and Crossbreeds and a class for Lifestyle farmers. The Best of Brand competition included a class for retailers and a class for wholesalers and foodservice suppliers. The 2017 Brand winner was Countdown taking home the title with their Countdown Angus brand and the Processor of the 2017 Grand Champion was Auckland Meat Processors/ Wilson Hellaby. The competition is sponsored by PGG Wrightson and supported by AFFCO Moerewa, Alliance Group Ltd, Ashburton Meat Processors, Auckland Meat Processors/Wilson Hellaby, Cabernet Foods, CMP Kokiri, Harris Meats, Land Meat NZ, Oamaru Meats, Progressive Meats, Silver Fern Farms and Taylor Preston.

Kiwi shearer smashes world record

31

Hawke’s Bay shearer Rowland Smith has emulated older brother Matthew by smashing a world shearing record in England. The 30-year-old father of two shore 644 romney and crossbred ewes in eight hours at Trefranck Farm in Cornwall, beating the previous record of 605 set by Invercargill shearer Leon Samuels in Southland this year. It was the latest in a string of world shearing records in the family, including the ultimate record of 731 ewes in nine hours by Matthew Smith at Tefranck last year. Rowland grew up around Ruawai in Northland and now farms a small block at Maraekakaho near Hastings. In January 2011 he shore 562 in a twostand eight-hour record of 1066 with his second brother Doug at Waitara Station, between Napier and Taupo. A year earlier Matthew had set a solo eight-hour record of 578 on the same property. Rowland’s wife, Ingrid had also been in on the action in a King Country woolshed in January 2009 when she set a women’s solo-eight-hour lambs’ record of 470 while also claiming a two-stand record of 903 with her mother Marg Baynes, of Wairoa. The record-breaking family members

were all present as the latest milestone unfolded. At two-metres-tall, Rowland was comfortably ahead of the target as he shore four consecutive two-hour runs of 161 each. While Rowland averaged 44.72 seconds a sheep caught, shorn and despatched, and with cutter changes every 15 minutes, the shearing time on the sheep, each carrying over 3kg of wool, were regularly cut under 35 seconds. In his record five months Leon Samuels shore successive twohour runs of 149, 153, 151 and 152, averaging 47.6 seconds a sheep. Up and coming Te Kuiti shearer Jack Fagan, who along with his father and shearing legend Sir David Fagan was at the record bid, predicted beforehand Rowland was capable of shearing 640 on the smooth-combing sheep. The record was shorn under the close control of judges Eddie Archer, of South Africa, John Fraser, of New Zealand, and Welsh officials Arwyn Jones and Martyn David, while a large team of helpers included wool handlers Leanna Wharerau, of Hastings, and Gwennan Paewai, of Wales.

Working in the private forest on your farm or in the forestry industry is a hazardous environment and has a high risk of injury at all times, particularly during harvesting. Reducing the levels of serious harm and fatalities involves everyone in the industry to be aware of their surroundings and ensure they have the correct safety equipment and procedures in place. Worksafe have a Safer Forest Harvesting programme available that addresses some of the issues by providing clear guidance and information and working collaboratively with the sector. WorkSafe works closely with the Forest Industry Safety Council (FISC) to ensure it has the tools it needs to improve the health and safety record in the sector. FISC has been set up to lead the safety culture change and to drive improvement in safety performance across the sector. Forest safety is ever yone’s responsibility, from the forest owner to the newest trainee and providing a strong focus on safety and having good systems in place helps protect workers

and your business. Unsafe practices could result in death, fines or having your crew shut down until improvements are made and put in place. When someone is injured the whole crew, the family, and the wider community are impacted. An industry initiative that is available to help keep workers safe is the Safetree web site. This is an injury prevention programme for the forestry sector — from forestry

Rotorua to host industry leaders Australian companies are moving ahead of their New Zealand counterparts in commercial building in timber. Engineered wood is clearly giving industry leaders the edge over traditional materials in many ways. Companies like Lendlease and Strongbuild are among the leaders in Australia, and both companies are part of an upcoming conference ‘Changing Perceptions of Engineered Timber in Construction’, in Rotorua on September 28, the second annual gathering of building owners, developers, architects, engineers, specifiers and many service and supply companies. “Building on the great response from our audience of over 150 industry professionals last year, we’ve added more case studies and a focus on showing where commercial advantages are being found,” says conference director, John Stulen. “We worked hard to find the right mix of speakers. With our event partners, Timber Design Society and Building Officials Institute of New Zealand, we have got a great one-day conference for building professionals to learn from.” Local designers and architects are now rapidly realising that a range of the products offered by engineered wood manufacturers get around many potential problems with challenging builds — and labour is just one of the issues that are solved by using automated manufacturing for wood panel floors, walls and engineered

Mr Stulen predicts the next big thing set for speeding up construction jobs is timber floor cassettes. “Commercial builders, developers and designers will be seeing many more solutions with these systems soon. The overall project savings from wood solutions are obvious and being captured by leaders in this industry — our conference will be full of case studies showing how wood solves many problems that traditional commercial construction practices and materials

can’t.” The Rotorua Lakes Council are active event partners promoting their successful ‘Wood-First’ policy. Rotorua is home to many wood manufacturing businesses including New Zealand’s largest solid wood producer — Red Stag Timber. The conference is set to be part of a wood technology week of events coming to the city in September, including the FIEA WoodTECH 2017 two-day conference and trade expo.

Are you looking to sell your forest or have the harvest professionally managed?

Timber exports worth more than meat again – after 136 years. Back in our colonial times, native timber exports were important. But, in the 1880s, with fewer trees and more farmland, meat exports went ahead. Now, after a wait of 136 years, timber is once more in front, at $5.87 billion, predicted to be more than a third of a billion dollars ahead of meat export returns into next year. And, modern forestry is sustainable, with a rotation of planted trees, which provide us with continuous environmental benefits, regional employment and overseas income.

Funds for sustainable farming Applications to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Farming Fund have opened, with $7 million available for applied research projects led by the primary sector that help boost rural communities, our economy, and the sustainability of our environment. “SFF aims to bring together farmers, growers and foresters to work alongside scientists and researchers to solve a problem or seize an opportunity,” says Justine Gilliland, MPI’s director of investment programmes. “The fund is based on the philosophy that those closest to the problem, or opportunity, are best placed to understand how it can be dealt with and how to get buy-in from their industry and community. The fund has been operating since 2000 and projects have come from across the country and all parts of the primary sector. “Recently we marked the 1,000th SFF project with the 1,000 Projects and Counting booklet, which is available on our website. Projects funded include restoring local environments, fighting pests, researching and promoting best practice,

applying new technologies, developing new food opportunities, and facilitating education and training programmes.” Applicants can apply for up to $200,000 a year for a maximum of three years. The maximum total grant available from MPI is $600,000. Projects require a non-government funding contribution of at least 20 per cent. Most successful projects are able to leverage a high proportion of other funding or in-kind support to complement the SFF grant. “Each year we receive a very high calibre of project applications. This year we are encouraging applications that showcase new and innovative approaches to addressing problems and opportunities in the primary industries” says Ms Gilliland. “We welcome any groups keen to tackle a shared problem or develop a new opportunity related to the primary industries to apply for the fund. Anyone interested in applying should contact an MPI investment adviser to discuss their ideas as soon as possible.”

CATTLE FOR SALE

You may be thinking, who or what is Trapinator? Well this is not only a leading brand name, with over 200,000 traps in the New Zealand bush, but also a major pest control mechanism protecting Kiwi and native birds. The traps are designed and approved to Nawac, New Zealand’s humane kill standard and there are three traps specifically designed to kill rats, stoats, hedgehogs, ferrets and weasels. These are the DOC Series Traps. In addition is the Trapinator Possum Trap. These were design by Phil Waddington in association with the Department of Conservation and have also been approved for use in England to replace Fenn Traps and in Hawaii to target mongoose. New Zealand is overrun with pests so these traps are in place to protect Kiwi and other native birds. DOC says that “stoats are public enemy number one for New Zealand birds,” because they are agile climbers, strong swimmers, hunt at any time, day or night and prey on many native birds, reptiles and invertebrates. Currently they are the most important factor contributing to the continuing decline of mainland kiwi populations. The latest addition to the Trapinator range is the

Mustelid Tunnel. Originally the tunnel, which houses the DOC traps, were made of wood and were too heavy to carry more than a couple into the bush at a time, along with poor access to set the trap and clear away dead pests. What was needed was a tunnel with stackable lids, lightweight, with easy access to set the trap, and something that could be assembled at each location. With the help of DOC Te Anau staff adding their design ideas the Trapinator Mustelid Tunnel took shape, today we have a trap that is easier to set. You don’t need to be an expert to set one yourself. The tunnels are durable, structurally sound and ultimately recyclable. An additional important feature is that the traps are all safe-bait designed. So you won’t be handling any nasty chemical compounds. So if you have pests running around your property the Trapinator Mustelid Tunnel is for you and you will be making your contribution to

SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Failure to consider the big picture I see some limitations in our farming research where so called advances in one area are creating problems in another area. Most vets have vast knowledge of animal disease, diagnosis and treatment but have not been trained in soil science. This is not a criticism but an observation. Recently I spent time in Denmark with a senior vet and nutritionist focussed on finding the reason for animal diseases, particularly in Europe. This is part of a treatment plan for farmers who can lose cows very quickly from clostridia and similar diseases like botulism. Dr Erri’s research has led him to the soil for answers. Unbalanced soil nutrients lead to unbalanced feed which is leading to the inability of cows to naturally fight diseases without the aid of vaccines and medicines to keep them healthy. A so-called advance in nutrition, a trend beginning in New Zealand, is the use of increasing rumen bypass feeds to produce milk. In Europe this trend is well developed and although this practice produces milk, Dr Erri commented that it is at the expense of animal health. Cows are barely completing two lactations under this system. He said

that nutritionists are treating a cow like a machine and by bypassing the rumen are not respecting the full nutrition that the bugs in the rumen need to complete their job to maintain a healthy cow and her immune system. The conditions in a cow’s rumen also dictate the bugs which carry on out into effluent ponds which farmers are then encouraged to apply to the soil as fertiliser. Good effluent containing healthy biology can then contribute to a healthy soil. Another so called advancement in science is the heavy use of chlorine in our cowsheds. This chlorine is doing

massive damage to our effluent ponds. The chlorine being used all produces residuals which upon entering the pond wipe out the beneficial biology. The next step is the sterilisation of our effluent and eventually sterilisation of our soil. Furthermore a soil with compromised beneficial bacteria will create an abundance of pathogenic bacteria which will eventually get to the feed which has grown in that soil. If only cows could talk, I’m sure they would have something to say about it. Amazing what you see when you look at the big picture.

Sleep well at night knowing that Flexi Tanks NZ now offer an affordable, simple and safe, solution to your liquid storage needs. There has been a lot of talk about our bladder tanks and we find many farmers are all abuzz and waiting to see just what the neighbour down the road is installing as they have heard it’s ‘one of those Flexi Tank/bladder thingeys’. So what are they all about? Flexi Tanks are an enclosed, self-supporting, strong bladder that can store from 20m3 litres up to 2,000m3 litres of dairy effluent or water. They are simple to install. Flexi Tanks NZ Ltd are the NZ distributors of the Flexible Tank. They are made by French Company LaBaronne, who are the inventors of this type of storage, and have been manufacturing flexible tanks since 1959. Flexi Tanks NZ are based in the Waikato and work closely with industry professionals and farmers directly to provide storage solutions that are simple to install and require no maintenance. Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Return of the originator

by Andy Bryenton

The 1970s was a dire time for the auto industry — while the United States plunged from musclecar excess into oil crisis panic, the great automakers of the continent struggled with budget cuts and technical issues. Even the sports cars and supercars of the late 70s failed to measure up to the style and sophistication of older models. But change was coming. In 1976, Volkswagen — largely famous for their long-lasting Beetle at this point — took their small Golf hatchback and equipped it with a fuel injected 1.6-litre engine. The result was a small car that blew the doors off several of its more ‘sporting’ competitors, founding a dynasty of nimble, smile-inducing Golf GTI models down the years. And, of course, a host of imitators. By the mid-1980s nearly every major automaker had a hot hatch in the running, but the benchmark always wore a VW badge. Safety and practicality intruded into the world of the GTI slowly, making later editions bulkier and slower for a time. But all that is over, and the latest Golf GTI is a back-to-the-roots driving machine. Let’s begin with a top speed pushing 249km/h, with a feisty 229 horsepower under the hood. Add in decades of development in crafting a responsive chassis and suspension setup, as well as what is

Machining Services Complete Engine Rebuilds Supplier of all Engine Parts Complete Head Rebuilds

perhaps one of the two best front-wheeldrive designs ever to hit the tarmac (Honda build the other one), and you’ve got a recipe for excitement. Tempered, of course, with a suite of electronic safety measures which ensure thrills without spills. Then again, for some the bold styling and unabashed firepower of the Golf GTI may not be enough. If you’re the type who drizzles Tabasco sauce on raw chilli peppers in search of more kick, the even more powerful Golf R is a halo option, with more than 300 horses under the

bonnet and boasting the title of ‘fastest Golf ever’. Either car is sure to serve up plenty of fun, cleaving to the original formula — a car which is mild mannered on city streets, light on fuel, easy to park — and which can blow traditional sports cars into the weeds on twisty, engaging roads. And while station wagon and electric-powered versions of this iconic hatchback also exist, it’s the GTI badge that continues to push the limits of small-car performance, even after forty years.

What should I look for in a tyre? You should look for a tyre which best suits your driving requirements. Tyres are manufactured for almost every requirement; wet or dry traction, high mileage, high speed control, steering response, ride comfort etc. A tyre professional will be able to advise you of product features. There are so many brands and models to choose from. How do I know which one is best for me? Discussing your needs with a tyre professional will help establish a tyre product that best suits your requirements and your budget. A professional tyre person will ask questions regarding your expectations of the product, the type of driving you do, how long you expect to keep your vehicle etc. A salesperson who just asks you what size you want is not ensuring you receive the most suitable tyre value. How can I tell when it is time to replace my old tyres? Most automobile tyres have a built-in tread wear indicator in the tread area of the tyre. This wear indicator will show when there are 3mm remaining on the tread. Depending on your driving habits or conditions you should replace the tyre no later than when the wear indicator is visible. Consult a tyre professional when tyres show signs of wear. The wear on my tyres look strange. What causes this? Wear problems could have a variety of causes. The problem could be caused by over or under inflation of the tyre, mechanical problems or the need for an alignment (caster, camber or toe).

No more huffing and puffing up those hills. Each battery lasts approximately 10km and a second battery can be purchased for convenience. The total weight of each scooter is around 36kg, and when folded up the heaviest part is 9.6kg. As seen at the Northland Field Days in March this year. Practicality and purpose by Andy Bryenton

Since the turn of the millennium, Hyundai have been scoring accolades and awards for their big seven-seat family adventure wagon, the Santa Fe SUV. Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor? With smart use of space, and a factor not found in many large seven seaters — that’s how. When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings. From the ‘floating’ centre console which allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink cans as well as American-sized drivethru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up. The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing should there be something in the way) opens

to reveal enough space to stow a small castle siege’s worth of supplies. The easiest fold-flat seating system we have ever seen drops the back row for even more space — literally whitewaretransporting volumes of it. And with a couple of latches pulled, back pops a third row that feels as comfy as the first two, with its own dedicated air-con vents and a 12 volt charger for the ubiquitous tablet or phone. So far, so good — but what’s the extra special feature which turns another successfully practical Santa Fe into something more? Well, it’s the fact that this all new, sharper looking model has been made lighter and given a velocitous punch, with a choice of a 2.4 petrol, a 3 litre V6, and a torquey 2.2 litre diesel. That means that the Santa Fe doesn’t just deliver the whole clan to school, work, holidays and sports events. It also delivers smiles for the driver as

well — and that’s well worth a look. The addition of a little spice into the SUV mix, with crisp handling to match a

suite of practical details, is enough to make this seven-seater stand out from the crowd.
