Flood recovery response The government has announced investments from the Provincial Growth Fund, and Covid Response and Recovery Fund, towards roading and flood protection projects after flooding events in the Far North. $14.2 million from the Provincial Growth Fund is being made available for roading projects. Infrastructure Minister Shane Jones said the funds would be made available as soon as possible. He had instructed officials to expedite all contracting with Far North District Council. “After suffering drought conditions for many months, Nor thland has now been overwhelmed by heavy rainfall with significant flooding occurring across the region. Some of the heaviest flooding was around the Moerewa area, and damage had occurred on Ngapipito Road. “Far North District Council has been struggling to upgrade, widen and correct road quality. I have no doubt the community will be relieved that this grant can address drainage, slip repairs, bridge improvements and other overdue matters.” The government also announced $12.5 million to help combat future flooding events in Northland, through the infrastructure package under the Covid Response and Recovery Fund. This specific flood resilience money has been approved by cabinet as a part of the $210 million global allocation announced for flood protection projects nationwide. That funding comes from the tagged contingency set aside for infrastructure in Budget 2020. “The infrastructure projects funded by the Covid Fund are ones that are ready to get underway, in order to create jobs and support the immediate economic recovery,” said Finance Minister Grant Robertson. “Along with helping to deal with the impact of the flooding, we’re investing in infrastructure now to address some of the long-term challenges the New Zealand economy faces, while stimulating economic activity as we recover and rebuild from Covid-19.” This grant is being made available to Northland Regional Council.

Grant Robertson, Finance Minister

“I am confident that our regional leaders will work closely with Whangarei District Council to address flooding problems in their area. It is a timely reminder of the importance of flood resilience investment,” said Minister Jones. Work includes river benching and setting back stopbanks, floodwall protection and constructing bypass spillways to divert water away in times of crisis. “Our regional leaders know which parts of Northland are particularly vulnerable to flooding events. As my officials engage with the regional council, it is important that Whangarei, our largest city, and its concerns are addressed. “I realise work has already started on flood issues in Awanui and North Hokianga. Obviously, the urgency has grown after the recent destructive flood. I have been assured by the councils this work is definitely shovelready and represents an opportunity for rapid action. “I will report back to cabinet as to what emergency relief funds may be needed to deal with the consequences of the flooding.”

St Michael’s is listed as a Category 1 historic place on the Heritage New Zealand List. The church will be upgraded and will get power and water connected. Paths, seating and information boards will be installed throughout the farm, and bathrooms built. A website will also be developed to educate people about the area. “The restorations will help attract more visitors to Ohaeawai and Ngawha and the surrounding area. Around 10 jobs will be created for the work, and further long-term jobs should result through increased visitor numbers.” $1.67 million from the PGF will go to Taheke, Parawhenua, Te Rito and Tuhirangi marae to renovate and repair buildings. The work includes roofing, sprinkler system installation, and repairs to sewerage, kitchens and dining rooms. “Marae are important centres for Maori culture and identity, not to mention acting as community hubs and meeting places for all. It is critical that these community facilities are maintained.” Ngati Rangi Ahuwhenua Trust will receive $2.25 million, as a grant and

Just above $1.7 million will go to the Ohaeawai Community Cultural Centre to restore and rejuvenate sites on Te Haara farm connected to the 1845 Battle of Ohaeawai at what is now Ngawha. The actual pa at the centre of the battle belonged to the Ngati Rangi chief Pene Taui and was fortified by the Ngati Hine chief Te Ruki Kawiti. In the 1870s St Michael’s Anglican Church was erected on the pa site. Its graveyard contains the remains of many of the British soldiers who died during the Battle of Ohaeawai. “This battle was seen as the first serious challenge to the Crown in the years following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The design of the ‘gunfighter pa’ was copied by other iwi,” said Regional Economic Development Minister, Shane Jones. The battle, part of the Flagstaff War, involved the pa being besieged by a British and allied Maori force said to be six times stronger than that inside the pa. “Despite an onslaught by British forces, the attack was repelled, with the flax fortifications, trenches and a series of palisades instrumental in the defence. The British forces suffered heavy losses in the assault on the pa. “This restoration work is an opportunity for the descendants of those who fought in the battle, both Maori and

Encouraging healthy lifestyles BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Lindsay Best grew up on Vancouver Island, Canada before moving to New Zealand to study to become a chiropractor and to help people with their health needs.

“T

o be a chiropractor in Canada, it takes seven years, but only five here. New Zealand has a private chiropractic college, and you study all year round condensing the programme with smaller breaks than Canada. Being a 25-year-old student, I decided that opportunity costs,” says Lindsay. “New Zealand is definitely home for me, I love it here and married Jason, a Kiwi, and we now have two children, Jack and Savannah. We decided to set up our business and work together to help improve peoples’ health. “We know people aren’t always good at doing that themselves. I assess and adjust a lot of farmers and encourage them to think, move, and be well to help them be healthier during their busy lives.”

In addition to running their businesses, Lindsay and Jason are parttime lifestyle farmers with a few sheep and a garden. “Even with a very small block, it has given us an appreciation of what farmers go through and how tough their job is. We believe there is a need to showcase the other health options available to help farmers help themselves and avoid the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff effect. “Although people move a lot throughout the day, they need to remember how to breathe and move to avoid repetitive stress that happens with a daily work routine and use their body properly. “I came up with the idea to boost health and wellness by holding a Health and Wellness Expo and showcase the

wide variety of health professionals and products that are available. A lot of farmers are time-poor. The expo is a great place to explore some of these options and have conversations with several different practitioners in one place to save time and effort of making appointments. “We want to offer new ideas because often health problems people face are about diet, lifestyle and getting your body moving. Pharmaceuticals are not always the best solution. “By making some small, regular changes, on a daily or weekly basis, people can make a big difference in their lives and their health. “There are many different options for good health and preventing illness. We want to allow people to take control of their health.” Lindsay is also aware

that stress is another major factor that people battle with. “It is good to learn how to deal with stress in positive ways like breathing, meditation, movement and being able to recognise it before it becomes an issue. There is a growing popularity for people wanting to be more mindful of stress and aware of how they treat their bodies. “I want farmers to discover how easy it is to take charge of their health, move ahead and work better. The expo has 35 exhibitors coming and several on the waitlist, this includes tai chi, fit factory and fitness league. No one thing is for everybody, so the day allows people to explore the different things available. “We hope to make this an annual event and would love to have people take a couple of hours off to focus on their long-term health. Take action and

develop more than the usual stuff. It is important for the family as a whole and the long-term sustainability of the farm to look after your health while you are healthy. “In addition to a wide range of practitioners, there will be lots of specials. All the exhibitors are offering items toward the end of the day raffle. There will be seminars and demonstrations done on stage. Each vendor will be offering a special service as well as a prize for the end of day raffle. “The Chiropractic stand will have chiropractors assessing spine and nervous system health. Other practitioners include naturopaths

offering iridology and herbal supplements and Bowen therapy, massage therapists, acupuncture for both human and animals, hemp products and Riverside Dental will be offering dental advice. “Entry is by gold coin donation and funds raised will go to Homebuilders Family Services to provide child and youth counselling and we are asking for canned food items for Foodlink, which distributes food around the Warkworth area.” The Health and Wellness Expo will be at the Warkworth Town Hall on Sunday, August 23 from 1.30pm–5pm. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

A FUTURISTIC

VISION BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Sean Alexander was born and raised in the Mangakahia Valley on his parents’ dairy and beef farm and has a passion for the farming lifestyle.

“I

love showing cattle and caring for stock. My parents run a combined dairy, beef and forestry operation. From a young age I have been involved in showing calves at calf club and have continued to show cattle,” says Sean. “I also have helped fence off and plant waterways and native bush areas, manage pests and release pheasants. I have seen marginal land retired or planted in forestry in a bid to have a sustainable future, whilst doing the best for the environment. I attend Whangarei Boys’ High School and am currently a boarder at Carruth House, where I am a prefect.” Sean says communal living with 60 to 80 boys presents its own challenges,

and he has faced them head-on. “I aim to mentor and lead the younger boys to get the best out of the opportunities Carruth provides. I was lucky that my school participated in the William Pike Challenge in year seven and eight. This programme was designed to foster personal development and gave me lots of opportunities to try new things like surfing, horse riding and even knitting. The highlight was a trip to the Poor Knights Marine Reserve, and the opportunity to interact with marine life in their own habitat was amazing. Being a protected reserve, the marine and wildlife flourish the way nature intended.“ As a year nine student Sean attended the Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Programme

where his skills were tested through challenges and adventure. “I play hockey for WBHS, and last year I was captain of the 2x1 team, and we finished in the top four in the men’s reserve grade. I also mentored and coached a collegiate team made up entirely of WBHS Carruth House boarders. Many of these boys had never played hockey before or even been part of a team. I believe I instilled belief, enthusiasm and most importantly belonging to them, which is very important for anyone to have. “I also belong to the Whangarei Mountain Bike Club, where I regularly take part in events and club working bees. I am a top Northland MTB rider and will compete in the Northland, North Island and National Secondary schools events again this year. MTB is a fantastic sport as I get to mix with people of all ages, keep fit and ride some amazing tracks in what is often a challenging environment.” Sean regularly supports the Northern Districts A&P shows either as a competitor or volunteer. “Calf Club, as a youngster, has fostered my love for cattle. In 2016 I established my own Friesian stud, as a 12-year-old. Through volunteering at my own local show, I have an opportunity to give back to my community. “In February I qualified with my teammate to represent the Northern Region at the NZ Junior Young Farmer of the year, later this year. This event tests our practical skills, teamwork and knowledge of the rural sector in modules surrounding environmental challenges. Health and Safety and knowledge of various aspects of the agricultural sector are also part of that and are very important for on-farm work. “These experiences have all built confidence, leadership, resilience. My upbringing has nurtured a love for the outdoors, animals and environment and cemented my future commitment to the agricultural sector. “My parents have a Holstein Freisian dairy farm with 365 cows and the beef block 600 head of mixed breeds. I love everything about farming, especially in spring. It is a pretty hard case time and is all the more fun when you are with good people.

“I also enjoy having a yarn with the sales reps and buying beef with friends. Farming is what you make it, and if you make it a good time, you have a good time. I enjoyed physically showing cattle up until bovis came around. You learn a lot from your mistakes and experiences, and other people teach you as well. “It is always good to talk to others and get advice and tips. “I also ensure I am up with the health and safety side of things too. That needs to be a priority on-farm nowadays. I encourage other farming children if you

are not sure what you want to do in the future, to stick to your roots. Stay with what you know — farming is what you make it. I have seen my parents have their ups and downs on-farm, but they come through each time. “I believe you should work hard and then work harder and one day you don’t have to work so hard. I am planning on doing a BCom Ag degree and after a few years with stable equity go back into farming and relieve my old man from the farm.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

SURVIVED TO TELL THE STORY by Ann van Engelen

Lifestyle block and deer farm owner John Vujchich has lived and worked in the rural community for many years, is a Far North District Councillor and has a story of survival to tell. PART ONE

“I

was born in Hokianga, on a 1,700-acre property. My dad was an entrepreneur and encouraged us to be well educated, and my siblings and I all went to university. I got degrees in theoretical physics in computing and maths,” says John. “I enjoyed science from biology to theoretical physics and mathematics, which gave me a broad knowledge of science. Rural Northland farming isn’t easy with the type of countryside that it is. I was working in Wellington but rural at heart. When my wife Elodie and I were expecting our eldest son, we moved back to the original family farm. We wanted to bring him up in the rural environment. That was back in the 80s, and I was one of the first to work remotely for a large architect corporation.

“My dad also started the first supermarket in Whangarei on Maunu Road prior to New Zealand losing its trade with Britain as they were going into the common market. I then took over the family farm, and we brought all of our children up there. “One day in September 2013, I was slashing gorse at the back of the farm when I noticed oil leaking from the slasher. “I stupidly made the crucial mistake of tightening the bolts without turning off the tractor. “I was standing on top of the slasher and heard a voice in my head very clearly warning me to stop. I didn’t, and I then saw a vision of a man with his right leg mangled below the knee, but I didn’t heed it.”

John was rescued by the Northland Rescue Helicopter in 2013 when he lost his right foot in a farming accident

John and his wife Elodie returned from Wellington to live in the Far North and raise their family in the rural environment Shortly after seeing the vision, John’s right leg slipped in a hole on the machine with the blade cutting off most of his leg. “I woke up and thought I had killed myself. I was one kilometre from help and knew if I lay there, I would just bleed out and die. “My biggest fear was fainting, and I kept repeating ‘God help me’. Suddenly the adrenaline kicked in, and I made a tourniquet from my belt and crawled to the tractor to get help.” John’s leg was connected by a thread of flesh, and he had to drive across several paddocks to get home.

“I had several gates to get through and had no leg to use the brakes. I missed the crossing and drove into the drain and stalled. I then managed to drive through to the last gate and nearly got home. I had low energy levels, and I tried to hop but fell over when I got off the tractor and called out for Elodie. “Elodie was nearly at our deer shed and heard my cry for help. She wasn’t meant to be there that day. The whole episode was a miracle. I told Elodie to phone an ambulance as she was panicking. The ambulance arrived, and the paramedic had just returned to work and took me to the helicopter rescue

pad and told her to call for the helicopter. “The pilot later told my brother Peter, a doctor, that they didn’t think I would survive. It was thanks to the speed of the Northland Rescue Services helicopter that got me to Whangarei hospital and into surgery quickly that I lived.” John says it was technically impossible for him to survive losing part of his leg like that because he was told he could bleed out in five minutes. “It was all of the rescue services that my story is a success. I went into surgery several times. What has always stuck in my head was when I was in hospital, I could hear the rescue helicopter

coming in. I had a new appreciation for the service and that someone else was hurt, and wondered who is hurt, where are they from and how badly. “One of the pilots recently told Peter that pilot Sue Dinkelacker had established an exclusive club for those who have been rescued by helicopter. It will help raise awareness and funds for the organisation. I immediately joined and became their first member. I think it is very fitting considering they saved my life. “It is a great initiative and you can get more information at Haastclub.com.” Read more of John’s story next month.

Micawber got it right — but who’s listening?

ADVERTORIAL

by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

As a young fella, I was taught from an early age that getting into debt is to be treated as a last resort and, if all else fails, is ideally used to buy something tangible that gives a return on investment.

However, all that seems to be beyond the comprehension of a government that can’t see beyond its next press conference. Charles Dickens’ Mr Micawber got it right when he said: “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result misery.” By placing that debt on our next generation, I have no great expectations that unless we change the government, we and our kids are in for anything other than a tough time.

(Part two)

Should I take Co Enzyme Q10?

We generally make all the coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) we need. Some, however, should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzymes that make cholesterol. That is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can significantly reduce circulating CoQ10. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a month on highgrade CoQ10 (CoQsol) the pain had completely gone and is now able to tolerate the medication without side effects. I generally find it takes one to two months to restore muscle function and energy. Muscle issues from statin use are one of the most common reasons for muscle and tendon pain and weakness. It is a shame that many suffer needlessly as in most cases, are quickly resolved with a highquality CoQ10 without having to stop the medication. What makes CoQ10 unique is its ability to accept and donate electrons. That enables CoQ10 to move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make the energy your body requires. Inadequate

CoQ10 levels reduce energy output, and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness. I regularly prescribe CoQ10 for those with health issues known to reduce energy, especially those with autoimmune or neurodegenerative problems. While CoQ10 is not a cure, it can help to lift general energy and well-being. In most cases, I will add CoQ10 as the patented CoQsol or my specialised MTQ10 formula for those needing extra CoQ10 plus a lift in energy. MTQ10 combines CoQ10 with a B complex plus other energy co-factors. Most people feel a real difference within one to two months. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. It is not particularly original advice, but Sara and I have passed that on to our kids, I imagine you have said something of that sort to yours. How then are you and I going to also pass on, or even explain, to our kids, a crippling and climbing debt that is expected to reach $140 billion — with no clear plan how to pay it off? That, to me, is appalling. It would be (slightly) more palatable if they were to spend it on major infrastructure projects that brought jobs and income into the economy. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case. They have announced a few new infrastructure projects, with the vague promise to announce some more in the lead-up to the elections. It appears to me that most of the debt so far has been spent on cash handouts that long-term provide no financial return and are going to cripple the country for generations to come. Look, it is a no-brainer: spend the money on projects that are going to benefit the country by providing jobs and assets for the country. That is what National is doing with its Whangarei to Tauranga highway programme and other infrastructure projects. It makes sense.

ADVERTORIAL

Long term view for avocados Commitment to a long-term strategy was the theme of Just Avocados’ recent grower meeting held in Whangarei to review the 2019–20 season and preview plans for 2020–21. Olympic silver medal-winning New Zealand slalom canoeist Luuka Jones joined the meeting as a guest speaker, sharing her own roadmap and lessons on achieving goals. “Something that we do, which Andrew [Darling] has talked about with you tonight, is review and debrief. My coach and I review every training block and talk about what is working and what we need to add to the next training block. We have a constant process of learning and refining,” said Luuka. Just Avocados has supported Luuka for the past six years, initially on her Road to Rio and with a continued association in the lead up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Andrew Darling, managing director for Darling Group and Just Avocados, said that what Luuka is doing resonates with the steps Just Avocados has taken to chart its course. “Twelve months ago, we reviewed what we were trying to achieve for our growers and how we would set ourselves apart. Out of that came our focus on long-term profitability and business sustainability.” Andrew said that in New Zealand, growing avocados is a challenge and for growers to have a business in the future, improvements to orchard management needed to be made. “We grow in a temperate climate, and in some cases, marginal areas. As a business, we looked at all aspects of that and focussed on what we could do better, how we could support ourselves as growers and how we could support you as growers.” Andrew said the key drivers underpinning Just Avocados’ strategy were market strategy, pool structure, harvest timing, return crop and financial sustainability. “Our pool structure was one of the biggest changes. We had a season-long

pool, which is a common model. We moved away from that as we wanted to give our growers the flexibility to model their own business plan and harvest when they wanted, depending on their goals.” According to Andrew, harvesting earlier in the season is critical to tree health and return crop. “It is an overarching philosophy for Just Avocados that most of your fruit needs to be off by flowering. If not, you are putting extra stress on your trees.” However, Andrew admitted that what is good for one orchard, is not necessarily good for another. Some orchards had the ability to hang fruit post-Christmas due to their level of orchard and tree health. “The point is that with our model, you have the opportunity and the flexibility to consider these factors and make choices that relate to your long-term strategy.”

Andrew said that some growers in the industry still have crop hanging from last season. “We pride ourselves on the fact that 100 per cent of our growers had 100 per cent of their crop picked last season. Another critical aspect influencing tree health and return crop.”

In the Northland region, subtropicals do exceptionally well. From palms, cycads, climbers to bromeliads, succulents and cacti — all can add a touch of warmth to your garden or patio. Starting with palms as a fixture for the patio or small courtyard a great choice is a pygmy date palm Phoenix roebelenii. Slow-growing to a maximum of three metres in height this attractive small palm thrives in a warm frost-free area making it ideal for a large decorative pot. Unlike its larger cousin, the Phoenix canariensis or Canary Island date palm, the roebelinii’s fronds are soft and easily trimmed — no chainsaw required. Complement it with a group of cycads such as Cycas revoluta (sago palm) and some colourful bromeliads. Finish with a cane table setting and some garden lights — your paradise will be complete. For the existing garden, large or small, there’s a lot more scope for creating a tropical look. If you’re looking for an easy-care palm that doesn’t take up too much space the Chinese windmill palm Trachycarpus fortunei with its fan-like fronds grows

Safe under lock and key

by Andy Bryenton

Modern technology has given us many clever and innovative ways to protect our homes and properties, from laser tripwires that sound alarms direct to our mobile phone, through to flying autonomous drones equipped with infrared cameras. But the simplest, safest and sometimes least expensive means of deterring theft is still the most traditional. Locks as we know them today are so ancient a concept that they have been found in the ruins of an Assyrian city once thought to be the stuff of legends. Nineveh, the ‘wicked’ biblical city visited by Jonah, was indeed a real place, and its people (perhaps because of the level of vice attributed to the place in the Bible) seem to have been the first to invent the lock and key. While craftsmanship and tooling have improved what was once a huge and clunky mechanism down to the small series of tumblers and springs we all have in our homes, the concept has remained evergreen. Largely, that’s because it works well.

However, there are three simple things you can do to make your home even more secure under lock and key. The first is to change the locks when you buy a new home. If you or the estate agent or former owner can’t account for every key ever cut for those locks, it’s best to get them changed. Certainly, your insurance company will be happier, and it’s an easy way to get some peace of mind. Secondly, there’s no need to wield a key ring like a medieval jailer in order to have access to different areas around the home, or especially around the farm. With most modern locks using similar keys, it’s easy to arrange a ‘master

key’ system for most applications, in which one key can open multiple doors, for sheds, houses, garages and outbuildings. Some of those reading this today will have at least one door on their property with no keys at all; take the opportunity to get it working again using this method, which costs far less than you may imagine. The final word from locksmiths is all about foresight. If you’re down to your last key for a given door (or vehicle) don’t delay, get it copied today. The cost of a quick copy is far less than the hassle and expense of trying

to change whole locks or ignition systems when every last key is missing or broken. Take the time to assess your first line of security soon, and take steps to make sure your home is safe. Often all it takes is locked doors and windows to deter opportunistic thieves, who would rather prey on those who have gaps in their defences.

May this year saw the proposal of radical changes for building consents, opening up more scope for easier construction without ‘red tape’. The big winners alongside landowners looking to upgrade were Licensed Building Practitioners. They can now proceed with many kinds of mid-scale work with added costs and paperwork swept away. The changes take effect this month. “Single-storey detached buildings up to 30 square metres (such as sleepouts, sheds and greenhouses, carports, awnings and water storage bladders) will now not require a council-approved building consent,” said Jenny Salesa, the government’s Building and Construction Minister in May. “Some of the new exemptions will utilise the Licensed Builder Practitioners scheme, which recognises the competence of these building practitioners and allows them to join chartered professional engineers and certifying plumbers in having their own suite of exemptions.” The new exemptions will save building owners time and money, by not having to access their local

council for consent for what is classified as low-risk building work. Cutting back building consents is also intended to allow council to pay closer attention to larger, more complex building projects with deeper environmental ramifications. What does this mean for you, the home or farm owner? Single storey detached buildings exempt from building consent increase in size from 10 square metres to 20 square meters, incorporating sleepouts, garages, greenhouses, sheds and carports. However, a Licensed Building Practitioner will have to supervise the construction unless the building is an approved kitset, or made of only ‘lightweight building materials’. Exemptions also exist for ground-based solar arrays, flexible water storage systems for farms, porches and decks on the ground floor, awnings, and outdoor fireplaces and ovens.

Any plumbing or electrical work must still, of course, be completed by a qualified professional. In most of these cases, consent is exempted most easily by retaining the services of a qualified builder of good repute. Those who thought they could not afford to build, or that the process was too complex are now free to launch their projects and improve the value of their properties.

Build a bee-friendly garden

by Andy Bryenton

Nature’s pollinators, hard-working little honey makers, and a welcome sight to any keen gardener; Apis mellifera, the common domesticated bee, needs our help after centuries of giving to humanity by way of making our crops and orchards grow. If you want to pitch in, it’s easy to turn your garden into a haven for the black and yellow insects that support all horticulture. The first trick is to see like a bee. With their compound eyes tuned in to different frequencies from ours, bees love the colours blue and yellow, favouring flowers with these tones. They also like to spend time foraging in a single area. So mass planting of nectar-rich, old fashioned and heirloom varieties of flowering plants can provide a great feeding area for bees. Bees need water. It’s important to have a drinking source for them, especially during hot summer days when these flying insects can cover vast distances at the speedy clip of up to 24 kilometres an hour. That makes for thirsty work, and therefore a few shallow saucers of water, topped up regularly, can make all the difference. Those with ornamental ponds should consider placing rocks within, to give bees a drinking point, or planting floating ornamental cultivars to fulfil a similar niche.

A functional and beautiful herb garden is also a bee magnet, and can, of course, benefit your kitchen as well as the welfare of our insect allies. Rosemary is a heavy hitter in this regard as it can grow to hedge-sized proportions, but herbs like thyme, borage and sage are also favourites. Of course, lavender is a contender for most bee-friendly flowering plant, and it also brings scent and colour to your garden. Where bees really get to work is among orchard trees, so if you like your apples, pears, cherries, peaches, plums and citrus, you’ll be entering into a mutually beneficial partnership with the queen and her workers. No matter what you plant, the best way to encourage bees is to cut back on harsh chemical sprays and go organic. Bees are part of the natural cycle in the garden, which is often disrupted in harmful ways by chemicals that don’t discriminate.

It’s easy to make your garden appeal to bees, giving them a haven away from low-nectar hybrid cultivars, chemicals and sprays

By providing choices, and a spectrum of flowering plants spanning spring through autumn, you’ll give bees the best chance to thrive. In return they’ll

the predictable and long-term supply of timber as well as help build stronger linkages between forest growers, domestic processors and exporters, improved professional standards, and greater confidence in business transactions both domestically and internationally. It now ensures that small scale operators, such as firewood traders, will not be required to register. It also provides an exemption from the requirement to register as a forestry adviser for those already covered by other occupational licensing regimes established under other legislation, such as lawyers. Minister Jones said the language of the bill had also been updated to ensure it was clear that it aimed to provide equity of access to timber for both domestic processors and exporters. “This means all people buying and selling logs will have access to transparent and impartial information and advice, so they can make wellinformed business decisions, and that

our domestic wood processors get a fair chance to purchase logs.” It also requires forestry advisers, log traders and exporters to register and work to nationally agreed to practice standards that will strengthen the integrity of New Zealand’s forestry supply chain. “As we strive to build confidence in the economy in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, having legislation that builds confidence in the log supply sector and quality of advice available can only be positive. “Forestry can be a 30-year investment if someone is planting a forest, so it’s important that they receive highquality advice from people who are knowledgeable, qualified and operating in accord with industry good practice and a code of ethics. “Mum and dad investors need the right information to make investment decisions, and they need to have confidence in the log traders that are purchasing their timber,” Mr Jones said.

Bridging the technology gap

100

by Andy Bryenton

Hydraulic excavators are the driving force behind most modern construction, with their action that mimics that movement of a human arm substituting pistons and hoses for muscles. The father of this technology was inspired by watching a water wheel while on a fishing trip in the 1840s. Sir William Armstrong noted that the wheel wasted much of the power of the river he was standing in, and wondered if a system of pipes would help channel the flow. That led him to look at the works of earlier experimenters, like Da Vinci and the ancient Greeks and Romans, who had developed musical instruments powered by water pressure. Fellow Englishman Joseph Bramah had invented the hydraulic press two almost half a century earlier. Still, Armstrong became convinced that the future of hydraulics wasn’t in pushing down, but in lifting things up. He developed a system for the port of Newcastle, where the city’s new piped water system had its massive back pressure tapped to power cranes to unload ships. These were so much more efficient than the steam cranes they replaced that Armstrong began to explore other ways to build on his hydraulic business. While he also used his knowledge of pressure in pipes to create more efficient army and navy guns, Armstrong developed the first hydraulic excavator in the 1880s, using it to excavate the docks at Hull. It was an ungainly steam-powered monster, but it chewed through dirt and rock, like nothing before. Ultimately the design was improved by the Kilgore company, who did away with Armstrong’s extra chains and gears, developing the ‘opposing piston’ hydraulic set up we see today. Kilgore may have beaten him to the punch there. Still, Armstrong’s hydraulic works reached their pinnacle in 1894, when the company he’d helped found deployed gigantic new hydraulic accumulators, steam-powered pumps

and giant pistons to build London’s Tower Bridge, perhaps the city’s most famous landmark. Downsizing those accumulators, replacing water and other fluids with modern hydraulic fluids and switching diesel power for steam led to the miniaturisation and versatility of the excavator, which reached its modern form in the rebuild after the second world war. It’s thought that the first mini excavator, of the kind used on construction sites worldwide, was the Japanese Yanmar YNB300. Space pressures and the need to work amid tight confines as Japan rebuilt its industrial base after the war led to the construction of a machine with a small footprint, a swing boom and the ability to be moved on the back of a small truck. Today, hydraulic excavators are everywhere, but it all began with one man standing waist-deep in a British

river, wondering how to make a better water mill.

Good grain production is vital to the food supply and yields have steadily increased over time due to better corn hybrids and planting practices. Technologies allow better soil, understanding and what nutrients will improve production — in short, science and technology have positively affected New Zealand’s production results. of unexpectedly early favourable soil conditions. It is not just enough to plant your seeds and hope for the best, you should always be sure to understand your field’s growth potential. Crop producers typically have an estimated idea of the yield potential of their seeds. Understanding this will help manage not only your expectations but indicate whether or not your yield potential is matching your actual production. Rainfall is pretty much the norm in crop growing in New Zealand conditions so there is always a major factor in the lap of the growing gods. Fertilisers are an obviously important part of maintaining optimal soil

conditions and adding at seeding can give a boost to growth helping provide the seeds with essential nutrients like potassium, phosphorus and calcium. The root-zone at the base of your crops is the most important area to facilitate growth so your corn can thrive and produce an impressive yield. Soil testing should be on your to-do list right from the beginning. Examining the phosphorus, potassium and fertilisation levels will give you insight into how to handle your crops. It will also let you know when proper soil conditions are forming, such as the optimal density and right amount of nutrients, so you are ready to start planting.

Graeme Lawrence has been in the agricultural industry since 1992, helping farmers with maize and crop planting, silage harvesting, cultivation, effluent spreading and many other farming requirements. “I have lived on farms all my life and am a dairy farmer and kumara grower. I understand the farming and agriculture industry requirements people have. I enjoy the machinery aspect and helping keep farms running with ease,” says Graeme. “We originally sourced the equipment to look after our own farm because we needed to get the jobs done on time. Then we helped our neighbours, and the business escalated from there. We pride ourselves on looking after our customers and ensuring they get their work done in good time. “Getting out and about is interesting. We service from Pouto through to the majority of Kaipara district. During our peak season, we have a team of 12 full-time staff. Our experience includes grass silage, effluent spreading on farms, undersowing grass and air seeding.” Graeme says it is important to have enough supplements on hand. Having control of your feed supply and timing is crucial for planting and harvesting. “Being a dairy farmer, I know the climate and the challenging environment of the district. The main thing we do is maize silage as it is a way to safeguard your feed supply through droughts and extreme weather, which is what Northland farmers experience. He is very experienced in the industry and can give customers advice with paddock selection for planting, quantities of feed you may require and which are the most cost-effective options for each individual situation. “Maize silage planting season is the end of September through to December, and grass silage is much the same. Planting turnips, chicory and other crops are completed from the end of September through to November.“ The team at Lawrence Agricultural Ltd can source feed and growers if you cannot

Save Lives

Fighting pests with predators by Andy Bryenton

Driving through Northland, observant locals may have noticed the ‘blackening’ of willow trees by the roadside and around rivers and waterways. This is not a natural process for the trees; it’s the work of an introduced pest, the giant willow aphid, which literally sucks the life from its hosts. This would be bad enough on its own. But the fact is that willows are a prime source of food for bees, who in turn produce tonnes of honey for human nutrition and health. “The giant willow aphid is a devastating exotic pest species that has negatively impacted the health of willow trees and by extension the health of bees and honey production in New Zealand since its discovery here in 2013,” said Barry Foster, chair of the Apiculture New Zealand Science and Research Focus Group. “Willows are a critical source of pollen and nectar for bees in the spring as they build up strength for the major honey flow and pollination duties. Giant willow aphids reduce the vigour and strength of willows, in some cases leading to their deaths,” said Mr Foster. Rather than resorting to sprays and chemicals, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is set to release the parasitoid insect Pauesia nigrovaria as a biological control agent for the giant

Bees need willow nectar early in spring to prime themselves for the big push — summer honey production. Willow aphids steal this resource

willow aphid. P nigrovaria are relentless hunters of the giant aphids, which form its primary food source. Gobbling up the pests will have a second good effect for our bees as well. The aphid also attracts large numbers of wasps in autumn, which rob honey from hives and kill bees. Additionally, bees feed on the honeydew created by the aphids, which forms into unusable ‘cement honey’ that can’t be extracted or, in many cases, consumed by the bees due to the melezitose sugar it contains.

The application to release the insect was led by Scion entomologist Stephanie Sopow who has been working with industry on this issue for nearly four years, with the support of several affected industries and government funding. “We investigated a number of biological control options for the giant willow aphid and identified this parasitoid, which comes from California, as the most effective option,” said Ms Sopow.

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES Apiculture’s rise continues by Andy Bryenton

The Ministry for Primary Industries released its annual Apiculture Monitoring Programme Report in June, confirming that the New Zealand apiculture industry is still growing. That’s good news considering the disruptive effects of Covid-19, and another element of our export trade which is working hard to help see the nation’s economy through. There are now 918,026 registered hives across the nation, up 4% on this time last year, with the number of registered beekeeping businesses also growing to a total of 9,282, an 8% increase. The collective efforts of these bees and beekeepers total an estimated 23,000 tonnes of honey, 15% more by weight than in the 2017–2018 season. Apiculture industry experts say that the next step is to leverage a better return from this increased performance and volume. “While it was a good result from a production and yield perspective, along with a small increase in export value, there was a significant fall in average honey prices paid to New Zealand beekeepers in the 2018–19 season for most honey types apart from monofloral manuka honey,” said Sean Goodwin, Deputy Chair of Apiculture New Zealand. While there’s predicted to be an even greater boost in production (perhaps as high as a further 10%) during the 2020 season, this still means mixed fortunes for non-manuka producers, who have suffered a reduction in international prices recently. Manuka honey producers,

conversely, have been blessed with good weather for production, with a warm summer leading to a strong harvest. International demand for manuka honey is still positive and has recently benefited from consumers responding to Covid-19 with a renewed interest in natural food sources like honey. Looking ahead, awareness of manuka honey has certainly been raised internationally, however, it is likely to be

some time before we know how much of that demand will be retained long-term. This was evident in April 2020 trade figures. “Monofloral manuka honey exports were up 23% on March. Total honey exports from New Zealand were higher in April than in any previous month,” said Mr Goodwin.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Albany’s ace of outdoor power by Andy Bryenton

From the whirring nylon cord of a line trimmer to the hearty chop of a brushcutter through overgrowth, the team at Albany Mowers and Machinery know their blades. Every possible small-engine powered aid to the modern gardener falls under their jurisdiction, and there’s not a lot they haven’t seen, tried, tested or repaired over the past 47 years. That’s no misprint; Albany Mowers and Machinery boss Robin really did first open his doors in 1973, in an era when the pull start was king and batteries were for your pocket torch. Technology has reshaped the landscape when it comes to chainsaws, ride-ons, mowers and outdoor power equipment, but a few core principles remain evergreen. Those are range, knowledge, service and price, all of which get the big tick at this popular local store. When it comes to range, there’s a wealth to choose from. Big brand Husqvarna is on display with its worldrenowned toughness and engineering, alongside Morrison mowers and a host of other useful garden tools handpicked by knowledgeable staff. That knowledge flows on to helping select the right tool for the job, from a range that comprises both new and ‘pre-loved’ equipment. Robin insists that it’s important to get the right fit for your property and is happy to lend his extensive knowledge, built up over a long career, to help in this selection process. Service is a watchword, too, as the repair department runs full-steam-ahead to keep machines running smoothly. “If

we haven’t got the parts, we can get them for you, assured Robin. “We don’t like writing off quality old machines just because of their age. If they are repairable and do a good job, we can fix them. If not, we can replace them

ADVERTORIAL

A key to farm planning For David and Wendy Harker, dairy farming is a passion with their closed system farm consisting of three full-time staff and a 405-cow herd. However, they did have a problem. The duo invested in Allflex cow collars, in the hope they could improve their herd’s breeding performance. While it took some time for staff to adapt and fully trust the system, they now love it. “We did recognise that we had some reproductive issues on our farm,” said David. They were also looking at taking a step back from the daily farming duties, while still keeping informed and across the mating programme. Wendy says: “The collars offered the perfect solution.” They enjoy the luxury of “no tail paint, no scratches and no bulls.” Tightening their calving pattern creates a proper break before mating starts. Health-wise, the cattle are benefitting from staff being able to recognise when cows need to be moved from the colostrum herd to the main milking herd ensuring rumination levels are higher, and they feel less stress. Staff can also be proactive and treat cows up to 30 hours earlier than when they would have shown signs of distress resulting in less recovery time and therefore, more days in milk. Wendy spends time in Canterbury for her second job, but accesses information on the go. “I can be in Canterbury, and I just send David a list of matings that I want for

LIVESTOCK ADVERTORIAL

Polled Hereford stud looks to future As a third generation joins the Clements Family’s Matapouri Hereford cattle stud, 48 years of breeding is set to continue into the future. It was started in 1972 by Brian and Jean Clements, with six cows, on a property then owned at Matapouri Bay, on Northland’s east coast. The stud moved inland in 1981. With the purchase and lease of additional properties, the stud has grown to 500 registered Hereford cows and 1,000 effective hectares between the Tutukaka Coast and Hikurangi. Son Ian joined the stud full-time in 1984, and grandson Jamie is the latest family member to show an enthusiasm for the popular and versatile Hereford breed. In addition to the Hereford, the Clements family previously ran a Charolais cattle stud, which operated for 25 years. Due to declining demand in the beef sector in Northland, the decision was made in 2019 to focus mainly on supplying Hereford bulls to the dairy sector. The Charolais stud was sold in its entirety to a new stud breeder in Taranaki. The June 2019 bull sale was the last where Hereford and Charolais bulls tailored to the beef sector were offered. The intention for the 2020 year was to hold a sale in May to offer Hereford bulls for the autumn-calving dairy market, and to sell to the beef sector clients by private treaty.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the bulls were sold by private treaty to both dairy and beef clients, once NZ entered level two. The stud will hold its 47th Annual Spring Bull Sale on September 4, where 150 two-year and yearling Hereford bulls tailored to the dairy market will be auctioned. The stud also sells 80–100 in-calf two-year-old heifers each year and had success selling heifers through Beef Expo for a number of years. Heifers have gone into both stud and commercial herds from Northland to Southland. All cows are mated to the bull to ensure the cattle will perform under varied conditions, with herd sires sourced from throughout NZ. The aim in breeding the bulls supplied to the dairy sector is to ensure calving ease while producing a calf, which will give the ‘white face advantage’ premium at the saleyards. Factors which influence calving ease include a low birth weight and shoulder shape. The stud has focussed on these two areas since it started, as keeping its dairy farmer clients happy has always been

a priority. Brian Clements says the stud’s policy is to offer a total bull service “We stand behind our bulls”. Offering both two-year-old and yearling bulls means that both cow and heifer mating is covered, with many of their clients using the yearlings over their dairy heifers. The Clements calve their own heifers as two-year-olds, with minimal calving issues. All the yearling bulls included in

this September’s sale are in the top 25% of the registered Herefords in NZ for low birth weight. The stud sells 180–200 bulls each year into both the beef and dairy sectors. Brian feels that it is worthwhile for farmers to buy a registered pedigree bull, that has been bred specifically for their needs and with a known history. “We feel that our bulls are reasonably priced for the certainty they offer.”

Calving highlights farm job opportunities by Paul Campbell

In pre-Covid-19 farming seasons, overseas workers bolstered New Zealand’s rural workforce with the dairy industry, in particular, looking for staff as calving time put a strain on resources. While the industry offered good money opportunities for backpackers on working holidays as well as regular seasonal workers from abroad, that source of labour has now dried up with our border closure. The industry is now looking to Kiwis who are out of work, and already farm training programmes have sprung up around the country to retrain and attract locals seeking a career change after huge post-lockdown job losses. The dairy industry is a solid opportunity to earn good money. More than 95% of dairy products produced in New Zealand are shipped and marketed globally and the country accounts for some third of the world’s dairy supply, feeding over 100 million people annually. New Zealand farmers employ more than 7,000 entry-level employees each year. The calving season is the busiest time on any dairy farm with spring paramount to have calves out and healthy by summer as grass growth is flourishing. Dairy is an increasingly popular job to have for women, so don’t

think just because you are a female prevents you from a job in this industry. Calving time also brings a major responsibility to the farm gate with the management and movement of calves needing to be easily identified and tracked for possible disease control and to this end, all newborn calves must be tagged within 180 days or before the first off-farm movement. Calves are required to be registered in NAIT within seven days of being tagged and failure to do so can invite trouble from the Ministry for Primary Industries. While most farmers will be aware of the requirement, it also applies to PICAs , the acronym for people in charge of animals, many of whom may be new on lifestyle blocks with just a few animals. MPI says not complying with NAIT compromises biosecurity response and preparedness, food safety and effective livestock traceability. The system was established to provide for the rapid and accurate tracking of animals from birth to death or live export and information on the current location and movement

history of individuals or groups. The system also supports improved animal

productivity, market assurances and trading requirements.

PANEL & PAINT

In the race to unveil new electric-powered vehicles to bring us into 2021, car manufacturers around the globe have focussed on adding range and practicality to the commuter car segment. Other designs have been floated by those on the edge of the envelope, such as Elon Musk’s wedgeshaped Cybertruck, but it’s a surprising contender who looks like being first to bring the electric ute to New Zealand.

Private & All Insurance Work

LDV is the reincarnation of the Leyland nameplate, with fresh ideas, massive Chinese-based manufacturing power and a new reputation for building ultrareliable vans and light commercials. Its T60 ute is a top contender in the economy bracket of the LC market, going up against other offerings from the likes of Great Wall, Foton and Mahindra, while providing an alternative to premium halo utes like Ford’s Ranger and Toyota’s Hilux. When you’re in a competitive market, the way to go up is to step sideways, and LDV has done so by leveraging some of that engineering muscle; its T60 all-electric concept, right now going through its paces in the wilds of Chile, South America, uses the full existing architecture of the successful diesel ute, with an engine sourced from other LDV products out of China. Maxus, the LDV badge sold domestically in the People’s Republic, offers a popular and powerful electric motor in their Euniq 6 SUV (you can see why they choose different names

How to spend your voltage by Andy Bryenton

The game of brinkmanship and bluff which surrounds the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in the far south seems to have drawn to a conclusion, with the imminent shutdown of the facility promising a glut of electricity. There’s been a lot of talk about what to do with this excess capacity, but so far no way of giving it back to the sector that’s powered the economy through Covid-19. Here’s an idea, then, which might even find favour with the environmentalists in an election year. Subsidise farmers into electric UTVs, such as the Polaris Ranger EV. With them zipping about the hillsides and valleys onboard clean, zero-emissions vehicles, surely the countryside would be that little bit greener? Helping farmers reduce their eco footprint, rather than cranking up the regulations and red tape may also prove a novel and welcome approach. It’s worth considering beyond an abstract electioneering slogan when there’s a vast amount of electricity apparently going begging soon. Polaris have been at this EV game for some time now, and their usual method of feedback, improvement and incremental upgrades sees the 2020 model come out of the gate more well equipped and practical than ever. The key indicator of better performance for this iteration is range, the constant benchmark for any EV, on or off road. It’s a prime focus for the Ranger EV, with a dashboard dial displaying exactly the range left from a single charge, and an alternating current (AC) power supply to

Polaris Ranger EV — silent drive means a great advantage when herding skittish livestock, and there’s no fuel bill to contend with

deliver more kilometres on each plugin. The 30 horsepower on tap may not seem much in petrol terms, but seeing as it’s delivered by a high-performance electric motor, it arrives with an instant boost and wave or torque. Underestimating this Ranger is like underestimating a Tesla off the line, though it’s made more for steady

and smooth transit of rough terrain rather than tarmac speed.Could we really expect to see a package which redeploys our excess of national voltage to farmers, getting them out in the field with zero diesel emissions? It seems unlikely, even though it ticks several boxes. But is it practical to invest in

your own Ranger EV? If you’re using a side-by-side every day for light duties, and electrical supply to your property is reliable, then yes, it very well could be. The only way to know is to check the difference by comparing your current ride with the 2020 Polaris Ranger EV at a local dealership.

The long view by Andy Bryenton

Take a look at a serious American farmer’s pickup truck, and you’ll notice a lot of horizontal steel between those chrome bumpers. Load capacity is taken very seriously in the US, and it’s the same on Kiwi farms, where the ability to carry all the gear for a big job is of paramount importance.

terms of off-road acuity? Well, with the wheels right out at the corners on the end of long-travel shocks and a-arms, the attack angles of the Defender Pickup when dealing with pitched ground are still superb. There’s lots of power on tap from an 82 horsepower Rotax v-twin, and that power is delivered smoothly, thanks to fuel injection and a torque-responsive PRO-TORQ transmission.

BU

Defender Pickup imitates the long, powerful shape of classic American pickup trucks, with a dose of off-road grip and power

Expect the usual easy to operate selectable two and four-wheel drive, turf mode and an auto-locking front differential, all of which are CanAm signatures. When it came to the question of ‘how can we make the Defender better’, the simple answer ‘give the people more of it’ seems to be a recipe for success. Get more done this winter with a machine that uses extra feet to go the extra mile.

T, WORK, P EA , L Y

Sometimes, of course, a full-sized ute can’t go where a more nimble, off-road focussed side-by-side machine can. It doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice loadbearing capacity for more grip and grunt in the mud. Take a look at Can Am’s Defender Pickup variant, which channels the mighty Ford F150 in its long, rugged stance, and delivers a whopping six feet of tray length in the back. That’s a whole lot of capacity, and it means that taking two trips from the shed to the job site could be a thing of the past. Long loads like ladders, fence posts and piping are more stable with more deck under them, and more volume means less mucking around. Ample clever tie-down points make the space eminently usable. We all know that we’re inclined to push carrying capacity to the extreme if it means getting the job completed. With this Defender, it’s more stable than ever to get what you need from a to b — all without sacrificing the comfort of two full-grown workers up front. It’s all fine and good to build a big deck, you might opine, but what about moving those heavy loads about? Surely, some sacrifices have had to be made in

by Andy Bryenton

The skid steer concept is not a new one. It arose from the need to handle heavy loads in a tight and confined space, as typified by construction sites and barnyards worldwide. Give a small, hydraulically enhanced machine the steering system of a battle tank, and it can turn literally in its own footprint. Kubota is no stranger to improving small-format working machines, from diggers to tractors. So the move into the skid steer market was a natural one for the big orange brand. Their SSV series comes in two power levels, with the more potent SSV75 packing a little more punch to deal with arduous Kiwi conditions. It’s got a whole arsenal of heads and attachments to snap onto those hydraulic arms, making it a versatile little module for busy farmers seeking a mate for their big tractor. Kubota has armed their flagship skid steer with a 64hp engine they’re calling the best in its class, in terms of performance and reliability. The engine’s common rail system electronically controls the timing and amount of fuel that is injected in stages, ensuring optimal combustion for greater gas efficiency, better fuel economy and less engine noise. Emissions have also been tackled, with the SSV series meeting Tier 4 requirements, largely thanks to the adoption of advanced exhaust gas recirculation tech downstream of its

Kubota’s SSV skid steers are perfect for shifting heavy loads in tight spaces — a real bonus on the farm or the building site

cylinders. Diesel particles are trapped in the muffler and automatically burned away in a controlled fashion to keep the little skid steer breathing easy. Clever thinking doesn’t stop at the engine bay. There’s more on offer for the operator to ensure a comfortable and easy day behind the controls. A neat self-levelling function keeps the bucket or forks in a horizontal

position without having to manually adjust the angle when lifting the arm. Additionally, there’s plenty of reach, with more than eight metres of stretch available, and a set up designed for easy dumping of the standard skid-steer trapezoidal bucket into truck beds. It’s an all-round performer with lots of scope for customisation, to tackle a host of farming tasks.
