Madison published her first book in 2018 at seven years old called The Good Baby and The Bad Hippo, which she wrote on her way home from school one day. She released The Good Baby and the Hairy Monster in 2019 and has, so far, donated $1,000 of book sales to the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service. “When I was in year two, my teacher read a book about a Bad Baby and a Good Hippo, and it inspired me,” says Madison. “I liked the way the author wrote and how my teacher expressed it. I came up with the Good Baby idea on the way home from school. The Bad Hippo story is about being honest and the Hairy Monster in the second book is my cat, Boris. “My friend and I came up with the unicorn idea as we go on adventures together on my family farm. The Good Baby and the Unicorn is about the unicorn not having many friends because he looks different with a horn on his head. “They become friends and rescue a tadpole in a storm and put it back into its home. The tadpole is also different. I hope the book helps people take care of others who may be different. “I donate money from my book sales to the Northland Rescue Chopper so they can buy things they need to rescue people. Living on a farm, I know the

chopper can get to remote places easier and faster than ambulances, and they can drop a person down on a harness to help if need be. “I come up with ideas from things around me. My next book is the Good Baby and the Naughty Grandma, and the fifth book will be the Good Baby and the Kauri Snail. Adam, my dad’s friend, does the artwork. He is a fireman, and having him help is really nice. “I also like taking care of the sheep and chickens, playing hockey and doing gymnastics. I love living on the farm and helping my grandad move the cows, feed out the hay and going around the property on my go-kart to do my chores. “I hope other young people will try writing as well, even if they don’t publish their books. I think as I grow older, I will write a chapter book but am not sure I will publish it.” The books are available from Land and Sea Cafe, One Tree Point, Jeff Oliver Print, Whangārei, Otaika Lotto and Post and the Book Inn in Kamo or by emailing steve@ commsuite.co.nz. The books are $12.50 each plus postage. We have two The Good Baby and the Unicorn books to give away. There are strong career paths to enable graduates to progress from entry-level to more senior and management roles. “There are also many opportunities in processing for people of different ages, stages of life and levels of experience — from school leavers to those looking for a career change or a return to the workplace. “Coming in at entry-level, you will not require any formal qualifications as plenty of training will be provided, leading to formal NZQA qualifications. There is also the potential to progress to leadership/supervisory roles as well as apprenticeships. “Meat processing workers do a variety of tasks and are relatively well paid. An

experienced lead hand can earn a salary comparable to a primary school teacher or registered nurse.” Ms Karapeeva says the sector invests heavily in training and upskilling. “Our industry is the largest on the job trainer in the country. While we invest heavily in automation and technology, many of the processing tasks need to be done by a person and cannot easily be automated.”

Meatyourcareer.co.nz aims to highlight the wide range of opportunities available in the sector and shift the historical perceptions of what working in the industry is like. The website includes videos featuring people working in the industry talking about their roles, a description of the types of positions available and guidance on remuneration. Developed by the Meat Industry Association, the recruitment drive is underpinned by a social media campaign targeting potential employees and making them aware of the opportunities in the sector. “The industry is about 2,000 workers short, and this results in reduced production and robs New Zealand of important export revenue,” says chief executive of the MIA Sirma Karapeeva. “This campaign is focussed on letting Kiwis know our innovative and progressive sector is at the cutting-edge of food manufacturing. “Our people are world leaders in producing and exporting quality and nutritious food to more than 100 markets across the globe. We offer a range of exciting roles, competitive salaries, strong career pathways and an incredibly diverse workforce. “There are roles in the industry for those without any formal qualifications or experience as well as for those who have completed training or tertiary and postgraduate study. “We have graduates working in many areas including sales and marketing, international trade, communications,

Samen NZ managing director Cees van Baar moved from the Netherlands 36 years ago to go farming and is now working alongside Sir Lockwood Smith to provide an exceptional Belgian Blue breeding animal. PART ONE

“M

y grandfather was a farmer but not my dad, so at 20 years old, I moved out to New Zealand after attending agricultural college to be able to go farming,” says Cees. “I went into the contract and sharemilking system. It was easy to get into back then as not many people wanted to sharemilk. After eight years of being alone on the farm, I returned to the Netherlands and got a job with KI Samen, an artificial breeding company. I was in the export department and

set up markets in the UK, Ireland and Scandinavian countries. I then worked in India and Pakistan and travelled a lot, learning about the breeding business. “My partner and I got married and returned to New Zealand, where we established Samen NZ in 1997. Since then, 11 other international breeding companies have joined us. “We select specific genetics for New Zealand. We have a tough selection criteria on the traits. This gives us a good assortment of different genetics designed primarily for pastoral farming

and New Zealand conditions. I don’t have a favourite breed because, for me, it is not about pushing a specific animal. “I believe New Zealand should be proud for having one of the lowest environmental footprints as far as methane emissions go per kilogram of meat and milk solids. “We use fewer antibiotics, are reducing bobby calf numbers, and where we can, lower methane emissions and improve water quality, yet we are told by our politicians that we need to reduce cow numbers. I ask why would you when you are the best in the world? It doesn’t make sense. “Logically, you think we should be supplying more and producing more. Other countries are getting rid of intensive farming systems. Food production will reduce rather than increase, so agricultural countries will still need to feed an extra two billion people in the future. “In the breeding industry, you need to look at where we will go in 20 years time. In the beef industry, we see that the traditional way of beef farming in New Zealand, where a cow has a calf sucking on it, isn’t as sustainable as raising a beef animal out of a dairy cow. For the dairy farmer, it is important that beef breeds are

easy calving, shorter gestation and colour mark the calves for easy recognition. The Belgian Blue, as we have bred them over the past 25 years, meet all these criteria. “When you see the ‘White’ Belgian Blue’s offspring, the white colour marks with white and speckly stands out, whether the calf is from a Jersey, Friesian or crossbreed cow. “The beauty of the breed is it carries the double muscling gene. That gives you much quicker finishing, growing more meat economically. Traditional beef breeds generally dress out at 50 to 54 per cent. “Our data indicates that we are achieving dress out at 56–65 per cent or higher, depending on age but between 15 and 22 months. We are growing animals that utilise most of the feed or protein they eat to lay down meat rather than fat. “The beef finishers who raise them can kill anywhere from 15–22 months, which is before the second winter for animals out of the dairy industry. It means people carry the animals for less time and produce young tender beef. “We have found young Chinese consumers want to introduce beef to their pork and chicken diets. Young Belgian

Blue works perfectly for stir-frying and clay pot cooking. “If we produce increasing numbers of dairy beef, to reduce our bobby calf numbers, we are better off with a young tender carcase that we can fully utilise. “The research is still being done in the beef and dairy industry, but I can guarantee the Belgian Blue has a good feed conversion. They are fantastic cattle if you get the right ones.” Sir Lockwood Smith has been working with Belgian Blue for decades. “We are very excited to be working with someone as passionate as us about the Belgian Blue.

“We visited Lockwood to talk about what drives his passion for the breed and are also working closely alongside him. “Sir Lockwood has New Zealand’s biggest herd, and we have signed an exclusive agreement to use his top females over our top bull and have trademarked the name KiwiBlue™. “Farmers will see KiwiBlue™ come to market in the next few years. We are managing to produce bulls that carry the double muscling gene, are white for colour making and polled.” Read part two of establishing the KiwiBlue™ next month.

TRAGIC KIWI LINK TO UK FARMING STORY by Paul Campbell The tragic deaths of New Zealand soldiers en route to war at a lonely railway station stop in England has been recorded in the story of a farming family in the county of Devon that cements a link with rural New Zealand.

by train to Sling Camp on the Salisbury Plains. Inquest evidence showed the troop train pulled up at the station when the line ahead was blocked. “The soldiers had been told that on arrival at Exeter, which was expected to be the first stop, two men from each compartment were to get out and draw rations from the brake van. It was midafternoon, and they would have been tired and hungry — not having eaten since breakfast. When the train halted, men jumped on to the line, thinking they had arrived as expected. “Almost immediately an express train from Waterloo to Plymouth dashed through the station, and the men on the line were struck down,” the inquest found. Parishioners subscribed to a brass tablet, which was unveiled

he rail deaths, two world wars, foot and mouth disease and the constant battle of farming life are graphically recounted in Larksong, a novel detailing the history of a rural property and its occupants during the years, by Devon farmer and author Trish Dugmore. “On Monday, September 24 1917, 10 New Zealand soldiers were killed, and two were injured when they alighted from a troop train at the Bere Ferrers station, near Plymouth in South Devon, but on the wrong side they stepped onto the adjacent rail line to be hit by a passing express train,” says Trish. “Some were farmers, some from Kiwi towns and cities and they lie today in a UK war graves cemetery. “Their troopships had arrived at Plymouth Sound, and they were headed

NORTHERN FARMINg LIFEstYLEs

Devon author and farmer Trish Dugmore recalls a wartime Kiwi tragedy at a memorial service in the village church, built in 1333. “A New Zealand flag hangs in the church, and a plaque was erected at the railway station. “A permanent war memorial was also built nearby, with the names of the victims inscribed. Even today, villagers gather each year to commemorate the tragedy.” Larksong is available in New Zealand from amazon.co.uk. The book contains an ‘eyewitness’ account from one of Trish’s characters that reflects the community’s shock as the effects of war came so close to home.

“This parish is almost an island,” she said. “The people of Bere Ferrers must have felt quite removed from the slaughter in Europe, and then suddenly they no longer felt isolated. It affected them greatly and still does. “There are memorials in the church, the war memorial and on the station platform — such a waste of those young lives. “It is strange, too, that many people have stood outside my farmhouse and looked down at the estuary and said how like the North Island of New Zealand it is.”

August 2021

An annual memorial, often with New Zealanders present, is held at the station Elsewhere in her book, she writes of the UK foot and mouth outbreak in sobering detail that will perhaps resonate with Kiwi farmers affected by the M bovis outbreak. “It was when we were in Devon that the foot and mouth epidemic overwhelmed this farming parish. We watched the disease follow the contours down towards us. We listened to every news bulletin. I wrote as it was happening; the pyres,

the burning carcases and the dreadful smell, the lorries rattling along the roads loaded with railway sleepers to light the fires.” The dead soldiers William Gillanders, William Greaves, John Jackson, Joseph Judge, Chudleigh Kirton, Baron McBryde, Richard McKenna, William Trussell, John Warden and Sidney West were buried at Efford Cemetery in Plymouth.

We grow 17 varieties of apples and four varieties of grapes. We also have peaches, feijoa, pears, the old

We cut hay off the orchard and produce our own seedlings.” Gillian recommends when buying fruit, remove any plastic and place the fruit in a bowl rather than the fridge. “It loses condition in the fridge and won’t taste as good. We suggest buying a little often to eliminate waste and don’t put fruit with bananas as bananas cause quicker ripening. “We like the fact that we have gone back to grassroots, growing food in an environment that we value. ADVERTORIAL

Chicory benefits animals and environment Fast-growing annual 501 Chicory ticks all the boxes for farmers, stock and the environment this season according to an experienced agronomist as spring sowing approaches. Blair Cotching says 501 Chicory in particular combines high DM yield with quick establishment, superb quality and climatic resilience to keep animals well fed in summer and autumn. What’s more, research has shown cows grazing chicory excrete significantly less N every time they urinate, reducing the N load in the urine patch compared to ryegrass-clover pasture. With urine patches major contributors of N loss from grazed systems, averaging 700 kg/ha N per urination in traditional pastoral farming, this is a key benefit for chicory, says Blair, who heads the pasture systems team at Barenbrug. “We’ve heard a lot about plantain’s potential to mitigate N loss, but it is not the only forage herb available to help farmers improve their environmental performance. “Science has shown us chicory can be equally as helpful, giving farmers another way to balance productivity and profitability with responsible stewardship of both land and freshwater.” The first study to directly compare urinating patterns of dairy cows grazing chicory, plantain or ryegrass was carried out at Lincoln University Research Dairy Farm in February and March 2018 by scientists from the university’s Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science 1. Milk yield was similar across all three forages for the trial period. Cows grazing chicory substantially lower urinary N concentrations, similar to those recorded for cows grazing plantain. In short, Blair says, like plantain, chicory diluted the cows’ urine because it is high in both water and minerals, particularly sodium, potassium and calcium. Results from this study align with earlier research showing cows grazing chicory produced more milk solids

than those grazing ryegrass, reflecting chicory’s higher summer ME, which averaged 12.3 in this trial compared with irrigated ryegrass at 11.9.

Two weeks ago, we had one of the biggest protest marches for decades. It was as if matters had reached boiling point, a line had been crossed, and as many signs stated — enough is enough. There were a range of issues under protest including SNAs, climate change, fresh water policies, ute tax, labour shortages and high country pastoral leases. I was privileged to be invited into the lead tractor as we made our way from Barge Park to Okara Park. I live streamed this on my Facebook page here bit.ly/2WqHszL. As we passed the hospital on Maunu Road it was almost as if people got out of their hospital beds to give us a thumbs up. That was a strong message from the rural community. It resonated with New Zealanders in 57 locations around the country as a protest more widespread than climate change and Springbok tour protests. Many of us were surprised then when newspaper front pages the following day did not substantively report the protest and instead placed it as far back as page five or more. I did some research and commissioned a parliamentary library to look at all of the major regional and metropolitan newspapers to see where they substantially covered the farmers’

protest. The table shows that 50% of papers did not cover the protest on the front page. The biggest nationwide newspaper covered the protest on page five behind a $20,000 fraud, two pages of whiteware ads and school lunches. Really? Was whiteware more important than climate change and freshwater policies? I think New Zealanders spoke on the protest march demanding change. What I saw were Māori and non-Māori walking side by side, saying don’t SNA land grab our land. How often do you see Māori and non-Māori walking side by side on a land issue? The National Party believes that SNAs should be paused allowing more community discussion, that local communities are better at managing freshwater collectives than Wellington, that the ETS should be the main lever for agriculture. Also, border settings should safely allow more rural labour into the country. We will fight the Pastoral Lease Land bill, and the ute tax is just silly. We back farmers. THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES Buzzy, but why fuzzy? by Andy Bryenton

Why are bees covered with a downy fluff? It’s a question that has brought to light a whole new branch of biomechanics, which could revolutionise how we build our own devices. Bees are in constant motion for most of their lives, and a lot of that motion is within confined spaces, sometimes in the hive or sometimes in the conical voids of flowers, collecting nectar. Researchers, therefore, thought that the fuzz of thin hairs, which covers the little insects’ bodies, must be a problem or used for some other function such as retaining and regulating heat. Not so, says a new group of researchers from the Beijing Institute of Technology in China. Insect biologist and biomechanist Jieliang Zhao took a closer look at the tiny hairs, which grow from the honeybee’s exoskeleton, using a very powerful electron microscope. What he found was astonishing. The hairs were not single filaments but branching shapes with cone-like ends, made to slip and slide past each other, cushioning the segments of the bee’s exoskeleton from friction. The upside? Zhao found that this made bees 40% slipperier than if they appeared smooth. Thus, they can bend, flex, wiggle, crawl and fit into tight spaces by using

less energy, making the whole hive more efficient. It’s estimated that ‘bald’ bees would produce far less honey, but that’s not all. “Mother Nature has developed many processes that are much more efficient than what we as people have invented,” says Neil Canter. He’s a chemist at Chemical Solutions in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, where ideas from evolution are applied to human problems. “Honeybee hairs are a good example. Friction ups the energy used in a process. Cutting friction, then, will lead to energy savings and sustainability.” In this case, the fuzz of the honeybee could be useful as a template when making space suits or equipment for exploring Mars. Segmented pieces, jointed, like the bee’s body, would move more smoothly and use less energy if they were equipped with micro-hairs. Similarly, the same technology could be used in anything that telescopes or folds, from umbrellas to sliding doors. Think

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES New Zealand’s sweetest prize by Andy Bryenton

The Apiculture New Zealand National Honey Competition has delivered another roll-call of champions, working with nature to produce some of the finest honey products on Earth. Held at the industry’s annual conference in late June, the competition created a more than metaphorical buzz at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre, as more than 1,000 delegates from the apiary industry met to toast the success of their peers. The National Honey Competition was one of the highlights of the conference, honouring producers across a range of honey categories and naming the top overall producer at a gala dinner. “It was an absolute pleasure to sample these honeys over the past day and a half, and extremely difficult to determine the winners,” said head judge Maureen Conquer. “The number and quality of entries are continuing to increase each year, showing the true wealth of talent in our industry.” This year, the supreme award winner was Jarved Allan of 100% Pure New Zealand Honey, a progressive apiculture

business out of Timaru. Mr Allan was the recipient of no less than four gold medals and four silver medals for a spectrum of products, including liquid honey, naturally granulated honey, creamed honey, honeydew and cut comb. Runner-up for 2021 was a noncommercial beekeeper hailing from Rotorua’s lakes district. Kim Poynter received three gold medals, one silver and a bronze. In third place were Jody and Ralph Mitchell of Kaimai Range Honey from Tauranga, who took home one gold, two silvers and a bronze medal. All entries were blind tasted, and an international scale of points was used to determine the winners across 12 main categories. Apiculture New Zealand chief executive Karin Kos said the awards were highly contested amongst beekeepers and honey producers. “Our industry knows that a medal in the ApiNZ National

Apiarists from around New Zealand came to Rotorua to celebrate advancements and excellence in their industry

Honey Awards indicates the highest quality of honey,” said Ms Kos. “We have so many beautiful honeys available in

New Zealand, but the National Honey Award winners have produced something truly special.”

ADVERTORIAL

Avocado export season looks promising by Midge Munro

Just Avocados’ New Zealand avocado supply group celebrated a fantastic season for grower returns in 2020–21 despite the disruptions of Covid-19, with its pool one average orchard gate return for premium sizes at $27.27 and for pool two at $30.42. The team is now rolling out plans for the 2021–22 season. These include working with a new set of challenges of higher volumes to Asia and forecasts of a significant domestic crop in Australia during the New Zealand export window. Exports of New Zealand avocados are underway this month, with the first volumes due to hit shelves in Asia in early September. Jacob Darling, general manager of sales and marketing for Darling Group Marketing, says Just Avocados will be starting its season with programmes in Thailand and Hong Kong retail stores, where they will have a strong presence of their Darling Avocado brand at the consumer level. “In 2020–21, we built a great base for the increased volumes we are shipping to these markets this season. We had very positive feedback from our customers on our product and brand presentation at retail.” Significant volumes to Korea and China from Just Avocados are expected this season after programmes did not continue in 2020–21 due to poor pricing and late volumes into these markets from Peru. Exporters across the

industry opted to prioritise volumes to a high performing Australian market where excellent grower returns could be captured. “Last season, we continued to service markets in Asia that worked in with our grower profitability strategy and our market development strategy. We backed off those that did not hit our goals for returns to growers.” With the experience of shipping through a global pandemic now under their belts, the team can focus on the further challenges that this season has in store. The Australian market has been heavily supplied in 2021 leading up to the New Zealand export window, and a large Western Australian crop is forecast to coincide with New Zealand volumes. “They [Western Australia] are forecast to be up by 4 million trays from last season. We anticipate that the volumes will be significant all season with values improving as we get close to Christmas, including the post-Christmas window.” Jacob says that Darling Group’s Brisbane-based operation JH Leavy & Co plays a key role in speed to market and managing cost in the supply chain.

Its capability will be crucial to optimising value for Just Avocados growers in the coming months. Of Asia, Jacob says Darling Group Marketing has planned for these markets to take 64% of the total Just Avocados’ export volume. “Our position in our key Asian markets will add value to Just Avocados growers this season, but our strategy to place this amount of volume will come with its challenges.” Jacob says Darling Group’s fully integrated model, from growing through to in-market representation, would continue to add value this season. “Being able to manage harvest through Avoworks, including taking time out of the supply chain with packing efficiencies, will all contribute to adding four to five additional days of shelf life in the marketplace. We will be working hard to maximise this model for our growers’ benefit.”

HOME&LANDSCAPING Designing a new kitchen

When building or renovating a home or office, one of the exciting jobs is perfecting your kitchen design. Proper kitchen planning is key to having a successful kitchen design that fulfils all your expectations, whether you are doing it alone or have called in an expert. Begin with finding a style to suit the practicalities of your area. Think about how you want it to compliment the style or period of your home or contrast it. Consider the type of units you want to go for and how you will use colour or bring texture into the room with materials. All of these elements should be considered before any work takes place. Once you have a look in mind, you can start to put your kitchen planning into practice. Kitchens have become rooms that we spend time specialising and cooking in for our friends and loved ones. With your kitchen plans, whatever your budget, and style there are processes to make it easier. From choosing the best cabinetry, flooring and appliances, if your current kitchen needs a drastic makeover, or if you have a blank canvas, ensure the end result is something you will enjoy.

Consider the style of sink you want, and if you have an open-plan kitchen diner and living space, the kitchen’s decor should work in harmony with dining and relaxing areas as well. List what you need and want from your new design. Often it is best to do this yourself before a kitchen designer changes things that don’t need changing, particularly if you are renovating. Think about where the dining table fits, if there is one, so that the layout fits your lifestyle. When planning the preparation and cooking area, it is important to understand the space you are working with, so you have the best flow possible between your kitchen, outside space and the rest of your house. You will need to factor zones into your plan if you are designing an open plan kitchen. The best way to plot in the cabinetry and appliances is with paper cut-outs of to-scale appliances and cabinets. Failing that, use a pencil.

Once you see exactly how much room you have to work with, you can start planning to make the most of your space. When working with the professionals, this will give you a clear idea of how much

you want to spend before beginning, ensuring you end up with a scheme you can afford. Preplanning will also help reduce excess costs early in the process if your plans don’t match your budget.

HOME & LANDSCAPING

Green house effect by Andy Bryenton

With the stark warning of recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change results in the headlines, many of us will be wondering what we can do as individuals to stave off environmental disaster. The answer is close to home. While we may not be able to control the transition of China or India from coal to renewables, we can do a lot more than most people expect in terms of cutting down on waste and energy loading. From the most basic to the more enterprising, here are some ways to contribute to the solution. 1. Source local. That could mean forgoing goods made in giant foreign plastics factories in economies driven by coal: simple things like switching to reusable coffee cups or wooden toothbrushes and razors.

Then again, it can also include diminishing your carbon travel footprint by shopping at farmer’s markets or sourcing only in-season local produce from supermarkets. Many of New Zealand’s farms are already carbon neutral if you count the contribution of their pasture, shelterbelts, wetlands and crops. To unlock the ultimate level of local sourcing, throw together a cheap and effective kitchen garden, or explore the possibilities of growing your own edible mushrooms. A productive vegetable garden can be landscaped to take advantage of other green initiatives, such as: 2. Greywater recovery. It means saving water from the kitchen sink, shower and bathroom basin for use in irrigation. A simple diversion to an inexpensive tank may be all it takes to gain a new water source, one that’s off town supply, usable even in droughts. Harvesting greywater may mean the necessity of switching up

some of your cleaning and personal grooming products for eco-friendly alternatives. Still, it’s a form of recycling that pays dividends when your veggie and fruit bill begins to drop. 3. Compost and worms. Strike out a large portion of your weekly rubbish, paying less to get rid of scraps, and also produce a rich growing medium for your plants at the same time. A compost system need not be complicated, and it’s a great way of digesting everything from peelings and leftovers to untreated cardboard and cotton. As a bonus, the heat

generated around an active compost heap can nurture the roots of plants used to a warmer climate. In the north, it’s even possible to grow bananas near your compost pile. If you have limited space, construct a wooden bin for the bacteria to work in, and consider a worm farm next door to it. This is a place where compost is compacted and reduced into very fertile castings, worm-produced soil that’s great for growing things. A worm farm can be put together for as little as $30, and there are many videos online which make it easy.

4. Chickens. They aren’t for everyone, but these popular poultry power through scraps and produce wonderful orange-yolked freerange eggs. If you have room for a coop, chicken keeping can be very rewarding. Once again, you’ll eliminate waste and save on your grocery bill. Quail is popular alternative, though they are less welldefended than chickens and require a coop and run with fine mesh to repel stoats and rats. These small and docile birds provide a regular supply of small, delicate eggs that are prized in gourmet cookery. 5. Landscape and design for the climate. The days of building a large wooden box four-square to the winds and with no regard for the sun are long gone. Keeping in heat with insulation, drying the home with internal, filtered ventilation and extractor fan systems, and choosing energy-efficient heating can all help slash energy bills. Planning for a low energy impact home also helps when it’s time to take the ultimate step and remove oneself from reliance on the power grid. Solar-powered extractor fans and ventilators exist as stand-alone units, but working with an architect and landscape designer early on to capture the most sun and plant out sturdy wind-baffling foliage can work better than any technological fix. 6. In Northland, solar power is plentiful and free, as is the power of the wind. Major companies are planning to

build solar and wind farms in the north of New Zealand right now, so it’s a good idea to copy their example on a smaller scale. The price of alternative energy sources has dropped as their durability and efficiency has increased, meaning that photovoltaic panels to power a small home can now be installed for approximately $10,000, including controller and battery infrastructure. A windmill providing 40-kilowatt hours a month can be purchased for $3,000 to augment solar’s seasonal differences. Alternatively, solar hot water heating can provide an easy to use first taste of solar power, tackling the biggest home energy cost, hot water production. Between these methods, big and small, we can all do our part. If nothing else, try to

The biggest hurdle to overcome this challenge is still misinformation sown by those who have a stake in polluting technologies. Look through magazines or on the Internet for gardening ideas if you are starting the area from scratch after the build. The willpower behind northern horsepower In forestry, farming and road transport, the biggest of jobs require big machines equipped with the latest in diesel and hydraulic technology. Each one of these, from feller-bunchers and forwarders to big rig trucks and excavators, is an investment that must justify its outlay through hours of gruelling labour, working at the forefront of Northland’s primary industries. The nightmare for any operator of such powerful machinery is downtime, the loss of productive machinery and man-hours experienced when faults or damage strike. Busting this problem and proactively working to prevent it is the business of well-respected local company A & D Automotive and Engineering. For close to a decade, Max and Shirley Andresen and their team have been the go-to crew to keep northern machinery moving. From their base in Kaikohe, this family business dispatches skilled technicians across the top quarter, repairing diesel engines, fixing hydraulic hoses and keeping the wheels of commerce turning in a very literal sense. Back at their well-equipped service centre, you’ll find the facilities to tackle the big jobs in repairs, fabrication, servicing and maintenance, and the kind of can-do attitude which builds a solid reputation. There are certified welders on staff who can master any metalwork project,

Fencing across Northland Phil Cornelius established CPC Contracting 20 odd years ago as a one-man band, fencing throughout Northland in the many challenging environments that the north has to offer. Phil is one of 35 certified fencers across New Zealand and is the only certified fencer in Northland at present. Donna Upton comes from a rural banking background. Having worked for the largest agribusiness bank in the world, she draws on experience she has picked up from some great people along the way. Together, they own and operate CPC Fencing Limited. “I met Donna in 2011. We rebranded the company to CPC Fencing Limited in 2013 and started Mid North Fencing Limited in 2019,” says Phil. “The second company was set up to complete the Auckland motorway extension project Puhoi to Warkworth. This project is very large scale with, in excess of 90kms of conventional fencing being undertaken. Two of our crews are currently 16 months into the project, looking to ramp up in the spring and summer season.”

Both Phil and Donna are on the Board of Fencing Contractors New Zealand (FCNZ), the industry body for fencing contractors, with Phil, the president of the board. “We are very passionate about the fencing industry and love giving back to it. FCNZ has a large member, partner and sponsor base and aims to set standards and best practice in the industry while lifting the calibre of fencers across the country through industry training and NZQA backing.” Since 2011, CPC Fencing has grown considerably and now has 18 staff. “We have five fencing crews with latemodel utes, five tractors, UTVs for the lines, two fully forestry spec’d excavators, a large transport fifth-wheel trailer and a transport truck,” says Donna.

“We have a great crew of staff and subbies to call on. “The crews love what they do, particularly the forestry crews, including the challenges and they have a tonne of can-do attitude and enthusiasm. “We can accommodate large scale farm fencing projects, environmental, regional council and waterway fencing. We complete all types of fencing including conventional and electric, sub-divisional, lifestyle, residential and forestry across Northland,” says Phil.

“Currently, we service three of the forestry companies throughout Northland and enjoy working with the managers. The crews love working outdoors and in beautiful areas that you don’t often get to see off the beaten track,” says Donna. “We look for staff off and on constantly; we like them to be passionate about what they do and have a can-do attitude. Our business is growing. We believe thinking outside of the square and being able to bounce ideas off forestry staff has proven to be a great recipe for success.”

Forest survey criticised

A major survey on forest planting rates has raised questions with the Forest Owners Association, which says it is nowhere near robust nor detailed enough to draw a conclusion that the government should impose controls over the rate of forest planting. hectares is a threat, then the meat and wool industries have more serious issues to deal with than just a few profitable trees to worry about.” Graham West says the report is positive about the integrated use of trees on farms and that land sales to forestry are giving better capital gain, which allows movement up the farming ladder or retirement. BakerAg, the report’s author, states: ‘If farmers already have experience with trees and forestry, or are confident of the support available in what may not be core business to date, then indicators are this will provide further confidence to consider investing in forestry as part of the landuse mix.’

afforestation will risk New Zealand not meeting its carbon targets. By the time that shortfall becomes clear, it will be too late to fix it.” The National Exotic Forest Description, which is published by the Ministry for Primary Industries, recorded a reduction in the net stocked area in the year to April 2020 of 31,347 hectares, after allowing for 19,000 hectares of new afforestation. “Farmers should be free to continue to make economic decisions on whether they want to use their own land to plant trees and on what land classes,” says president of the Farm Forestry Association, Graham West. “A recent Ministry for the Environment study has shown that there are currently 313,000 hectares of plantation forests on farmland. That makes sense for farmers. “The recent PwC report was clear that forestry stacked up very well as a land use, and so forestry benefits the economies of local communities. “There are between 7.5 and 10.4 million hectares of hill country farmland, and if a conversion of a mere 380,000

Forest Owners Association president Phil Taylor says the Beef+Lamb report is a worthy contribution to the land-use debate, but it raises more questions than it answers. “Government data is contradicting the report. Official figures clearly point to a decline in the area of the exotic plantation forest estate, and so new planting is not keeping pace with the land area going out of forestry. “The plantation forest estate has shrunk by 162,000 hectares in the past 18 years, mostly to dairy farms. There has always been changing land use. “Our concern on current figures would be that the Climate Change Commission’s reliance on an expansion of the exotic forest area by another 380,000 hectares by 2035, to meet the 2050 greenhouse gas target, is going to fall well short. “On top of that, the Climate Change Commission anticipates there will need to be more use made of wood in construction, and its extensive utilisation in biofuels to replace fossil fuel. That means any government restrictions on

Working for better communities

by Molly Molving-Lilo, Volunteering Northland

Volunteering is one of the many selfless, rewarding and positively beneficial deeds a person can engage in, and needs are huge and extremely essential. In the Northland region, there are hundreds of organisations posting for volunteers in a wide range of services, including retail, emergency services, companionship and gardening, to name a few. In the rural communities of the Kaipara District, volunteering is a service that organisations like Greenways Trust rely on. Greenways Trust, located in Dargaville, is a charitable trust supporting people 16 years and above with intellectual disabilities. Its mission: ‘Creating opportunities and providing support for work, recreation and home life’ is achieved through employment opportunities, support in social, recreational and spiritual livelihood, programmes/activities and residential arrangements’. The work of volunteers helps to enhance the possibilities and quality of life for this group. “They increase friendship, recreation and active opportunities for our people,” says Lisa Payne from Greenways Trust. “Volunteers help our people to accomplish their goals and live happy lives.” Everyone deserves a chance to live a happy,

fulfilled life and, from the generous support of volunteers, organisations like Greenways Trust can provide that service. It’s not only life-changing for the people that need the support; it also benefits and positively changes the life of the volunteer. Organisations like Greenways Trust are regularly in need of volunteers and the support they provide. There is always an opportunity to help others. If you would like to get involved, you can check out the Volunteering Northland website for more details volunteeringnorthland.nz or call on 0800 865 268 to find out about opportunities that might suit you.

MAIZE Preparation key to growth Setting up for a successful maize planting season includes creating a good seedbed that allows uniform seeding depth, good seed to soil contact, unrestricted root development and finally, good air, water and nutrient movement.

• HAY • SILAGE • SPRAYING • CULTIVATION • SEEDING Office: 09 433 1733 Eden: 021 0842 6587 Warren: 027 391 4777

A well-prepared planting area makes for maximum crop establishment and increases machinery, herbicide and insecticide performance. Many New Zealand soils require some form of cultivation to create a good uniform seedbed. In addition to providing a good growing environment for maize seedlings. In the past, tillage was seen to help with residue incorporation, weed management, lime and fertiliser, and soil warming and aeration. However, modern developments have many growers turning to seed drilling, which limits tillage with some environmental benefits, including reduced carbon release. It also reduces water runoff surface damage and dust nuisances.

Cultivating or driving heavy machinery over wet soils can cause long-term soil compaction issues that could lead to irreversible damage. Where drainage is an issue, rectifying this pre-planting could be a great investment long-term. To optimise seed establishment, a minimum soil temperature of 10°C at 9am is required. Lower soil temperatures can reduce germination success by damaging seed membranes, whereas wet soils could result in seed rotting before germination. Soils with a high level of surface residue should be managed differently, as they tend to be cooler than normal. That limits planting to later when soils

are much higher than 10°C. Residue from long-term pasture also tends to harbour higher numbers of Argentine stem weevil, while that from a previous maize crop can be a host for leaf diseases, requiring a more elaborate disease management strategy. Among other factors, creating conditions that allow for planting into good soil conditions is key when it comes to setting up for a good yield. Even if you have a target planting date, flexibility is critical, particularly when soils are uncharacteristically cool or when cold weather is forecast.

MAIZE Managing an important feed supplement Feeding a dairy herd in spring and summer means good maize silage as a high-quality forage supplement for filling genuine feed deficits, but the process needs to be well managed to reduce costs and wastage. DairyNZ advises farmers that the silage is particularly low in sodium (Na), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and can be used as an effective carrier to supplement cows with magnesium (Mg). New Zealand trials have found production responses to maize silage range between 32g MS/kg DM and 178g MS/kg DM. The highest response came from more days in milk created by feeding maize silage in a year affected by a dry summer. An analysis of more than 600 New Zealand dairy farms found, on average,

that supplements fed added only 50g MS/kgDM to annual milksolids/cow and 96g MS/kgDM to annual milksolids/ha. With such variation in response possible, attention to detail is required to turn additional feed into additional profit. Maize silage is full of soluble carbohydrates, which, while being a great food for cows, is also loved by spoilage bugs, such as yeasts and mould. The aim of the ensiling process is to get the air out of the stack and keep it out until maize silage is ready to be fed. Consider stack location and prepare

a site in advance of harvest. Consider environmental implications such as the risk of run-off, distance to waterways, drains and other sensitive areas. Consider whether to use a stack or a bunker. The former can be located around a property, and distribution is flexible while bunkers are initially more expensive but have higher compaction rate and, therefore, less wastage. The aim is to build a stack so that when being fed out,

as little maize as possible is exposed to air. Cover immediately after a contractor has finished. Seal around the base of the stack with soil, sand or lime and place tyres to completely cover the stack. When you start feeding maize, open the stack at the opposite end of the prevailing wind to prevent air getting pushed under the cover. Don’t ram a bucket or silage forks into the face of the stack, as this may allow air to penetrate.

MAIZE Crowning achievement BU

AY

by Andy Bryenton

T, WORK, P EA , L Y

We all know that bigger machinery can deliver economies of scale through sheer muscle. However, is it possible to also achieve gains in brains as well as brawn? German company Krone thinks so, as evidenced by its gigantic and intelligent Big X 1180 harvesters, some of the beefiest in the business. Armed with impressive statistics when it comes to sheer size, the Big X 1180 is intended to reap as much of a maize crop as possible while it’s in peak condition. With an emphasis on usable dry matter driving innovation in this field, going large was a no brainer. However, what about working smarter as well as harder? Krone began its smart thinking with the choice of engine for the Big X, partnering up with diesel giants Liebherr to develop a super-efficient V12, producing 1156 horsepower and enough torque not just for motive power but also to wield the array of harvest technology, which culminates in a steady stream of output into a waiting tender truck or trailer. Maize farmers will know the delicate balance of time and growth, which makes for an optimum harvest. Having a machine that can power through whole fields with ease makes for less stress if the weather and conditions don’t play ball. Equally important, however, is data, the raw stuff of modern farming know-how. Collecting information

K P Dreadon Ltd Ag Contracting

Specialising in Krone’s Big X range is not just large; they’re intelligent, too, with the ability to help plan future maize planting with data from the current harvest just one of their strengths

about this year’s crop may well influence the nature of the next, especially when multiple strains of maize can be chosen to create a time-delayed sequence of harvest operation windows. This is the reason for a popular option on the Big X — a near-infrared sensor or NIR. Built right into the output chute, this device can measure a wide spectrum of qualities in the chopped end product. Krone uses an AgriNIR online sensor, which can provide data on dry matter, starch, raw protein crude ash, crude

fat, acid detergent fibre and neutral detergent fibre. With information like this on hand right at the point of harvest, it’s easier to see what might be altered for future results. Other sensors help keep the speed of progress, the size of chopped material and even the line which the operator takes within optimum parameters, with all the information at a fingertip’s command within the large and comfortable cab.

Benefits of a good multi-supplement by John Arts

Your helping hand When it comes to your health and safety, employment, marketing, resource consents or project management solutions, Total Compliance Ltd has the answers.

(Part one) A good multi-supplement is one of the best health investments you can make. It will ensure your body has the nutrients needed to stay healthy. Unfortunately, most are formulated as a once-a-day dose. That means that many of the bulkier compounds are either omitted or included in meaningless amounts. As an experienced formulator, I know it is impossible to provide sufficient nutrients to fit in a one a day product. My multi-antioxidant/mineral/ vitamin has a dose of two capsules a day. A good multi should have all the important major and trace elements. I have a real concern about low levels of critical minerals such as selenium, zinc, copper and manganese as these are needed to build our antioxidant defence systems. Many diseases are linked to low levels of trace minerals. Your multi should have a full B vitamin complex, in particular B6, folic acid and B12 as they combine to reduce homocysteine, which is a risk factor for heart disease and some forms of dementia. It should have meaningful levels of vitamin D for immunity. The regulations governing

vitamin D in supplements are archaic, so we should add extra Vitamin D in winter. Vitamin E is the most important fat-soluble antioxidant. It should be in the natural d-alpha-tocopherol form, not the less effective synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol. Finally, it should contain the most potent antioxidants, especially grape seed extract. I know of only a few products that contain these potent antioxidants. My preferred grape seed extract (OPC) is the well-researched, and patented NZ made Oxi-fend®. OPC is unique among antioxidants in that it actively scavenges oxygen and nitrogen radicals. It also has an affinity to collagen, making it a great cardiovascular protector. I know of no single botanical ingredient to have such a positive impact on health. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Herbs power livestock performance by Willi Thomas

The addition of herbs to a pasture mix is the weapon you need to enhance pasture quality and quantity when feed supplies tighten during dry periods. Herbivore Chicory and Hercules plantain can be added to perennial pastures or short rotation pastures. Herb-enriched pastures provide extremely mineral-rich specialist feed for stock health, growing out young stock where there is a requirement for higher protein and metabolic energy. As a stand-alone crop Herbivore Chicory is a versatile option allowing multi-purpose grazing opportunities. The rationale is to retain a crop to graze when the animals need it rather than when it’s optimal for the crop. Chicory regrowth will restore the feed quantity after each subsequent grazing. The highest yielding chicory, Herbivore, is fast establishing and has regrowth vigour, meaning crop yields do not diminish with subsequent grazing. Its deep fibrous taproot means the plant can

tolerate moisture stress and has the ability to draw nutrients and trace minerals from deep within the soil reserves. Herbivore Chicory is a very highquality feed source of MEs of 11.5 to 13 MJ ME/kg DM at a time when nonirrigated ryegrass can contain both low ME and low crude protein. Plantain variety Hercules enhances the quality of the paddock. Hercules significantly augments the availability of cobalt, B12, calcium, sodium, copper, selenium and tannins. Hercules is a unique variety of plantain in that it has very high anthocyanin levels which allow the plant available nutrients to be absorbed by the rumen at greater levels resulting in better stock health. The superior production benefits of Herbivore Chicory will deliver throughout summer including early and late in the season.

Solutions for dropping pond levels by Michael Prestidge | Nevada Effluent Management Specialist

Nevada, New Zealand’s leading effluent specialist, provides the answers for managing effluent systems on-farm. Question: We’ve got a couple of farms south of Kerikeri with big ponds. What’s the best way to drop pond levels fast? We’ve tried a few different methods now, but everything is either too slow or unsuitable for our hilly farm. Answer: Dropping pond levels fast is more of a challenge when spreading over hilly paddocks. You need an irrigator with stability over uneven

ground, and the application needs to be council compliant. This means making sure spreading doesn’t result in ponding or run-off. From what you describe, a Nevada RainWave™ umbilical drag hose system could be ideal. Attaching the effluent applicator to your tractor to spread will provide the stability required for moving over uneven ground. Using

the RainWave™ applicator, there is little chance of ponding or run-off due to its unique design, which allows it to produce larger droplets that are spread in a rain-like pattern allowing the effluent to reach and absorb into the ground. It can also provide the speed you are after to drop the pond levels fast, spreading 10 times the amount of a standard travelling irrigator. Many farmers in similar situations have had success using an umbilical system. With this type of set-up, you can

Celebrating our farmers’ contribution by Andy Bryenton

Farmers in the agricultural red sector are gearing up for a celebration of their unique skills and contribution to the Kiwi table and economy, as the inaugural Beef + Lamb New Zealand Awards seeks nominees. Dairying awards have long shed light on the positive impact of progressive dairy farming on national prosperity. However, this is the first time farmers focussing on the other facet of the livestock industry have had a chance to shine. Beef+Lamb CEO Sam McIvor says that it’s time to celebrate the people, the science, technology and innovation that makes New Zealand’s red meat sector world-leading. “We are delighted to be opening nominations for these awards, which incorporate the sheep and beef industries, including dairy beef. “It is the first time that the red sector has had an opportunity to showcase its excellence, to the industry and the wider public, through an event such as the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Awards.” Nominations are being sought from among local farmers, as Northland is home to many innovative livestock operations of considerable success. There are a total of eight categories; the Emerging Achiever Award for those at the start of their beef and lamb journey, the People Development Award for those investing in their team, a Significant Sector Contribution Award, a Rural Champion Award, the Science and Research Award for those pushing the boundaries of knowledge in the sector, a Technology Award, Innovation Farming Award and the coveted Market Leader Award. Mr McIvor says the categories are deliberately diverse to encourage a

Groundswell group break silence by Andy Bryenton

The group behind a series of protests which brought many towns in New Zealand to a halt last month has broken its silence to clarify its position, in a communication singling out Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith and Far North Mayor John Carter for thanks.

The Groundswell NZ group, a grassroots collaboration of farmers from across New Zealand, took to the streets with utes and tractors in late July to protest against what they see as punitive and unworkable regulation in the farming sector. It has followed up with a letter clarifying their position, distancing themselves from extremists and quashing ‘straw man’ arguments levelled by opponents. ‘Groundswell New Zealand is not calling for a halt in progress addressing our environmental issues,’ says the

open letter to the New Zealand public, published last week. ‘We believe that all New Zealanders need to join in the journey of environmental custodianship.’ The organisation refuted claims that it is against all forms of regulation on farming practices. ‘Our opposition is to unworkable regulations. Particularly those that are impractical, cost-prohibitive, penalise environmentally progressive landowners or have detrimental outcomes for the environment.’

Following a nationwide protest two weeks ago, Groundswell New Zealand has broken its silence to clarify its position on key issues

The letter goes on to highlight Groundswell’s alternatives to the freshwater and indigenous biodiversity rules proposed by the government. These include a localised, catchment-specific water quality plan hand in hand with local councils and an approach that turns regenerated native flora and fauna areas on farmland into assets, not liabilities for farmers.

March of the pines must slow by Andy Bryenton

Carbon farming is replacing productive red sector farming in beef and lamb, says a new report, which calls for a fresh look at the concept of replacing agriculture with exotic pines. Beef + Lamb New Zealand commissioned independent company BakerAg to drill down into the figures involved with carbon sequestration forestry. An industry, which is built largely upon the concept of carbon credits. With the price of these credits in the ascendant, forests are proliferating. However, the warning from farmers is ‘you can’t eat pines’. B+LNZ chief executive Sam McIvor said the report shows that in 2017, 3,965 hectares of whole sheep and beef farms were sold into forestry. That increased to 20,227 ha in 2018 and 36,824 ha in 2019. It declined to 16,764 hectares in 2020, most likely as a result of Covid-19. However, rural intelligence suggests it has regathered momentum this year and moved into new regions. It’s the livestock farmers’ advocacy group’s opinion that this is threatening rural communities. “While B+LNZ does see a role for forestry in addressing climate change, we are calling for urgent discussions, and government action on mechanisms to ensure that too much does not happen,” says Mr McIvor. “They’ve repeated a mantra of ‘right tree, right purpose, right place’, but frankly,

From farms to forests; caution is being advised by industry leaders as pines replace livestock in rural New Zealand

the evidence shows that’s not happening. It’s threatening rural communities and undermining New Zealand’s future economic viability.” The Climate Change Commission and the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment have also both recently suggested the need for policy changes to limit forestry offsetting, which was one of the seven core concerns voiced by farmer’s protest group Groundswell NZ.

Harley Davidson made a move out of left field with its new off-road adventurer, but it may have been a test-bed for new roadgoing power as well. First out of the blocks, last February, was the Pan America, a sports tourer bike of the kind that BMW and Honda are famous for. High-stanced and sporting knobbly tyres, this is the opposite of the traditional view of a Harley Davidson and point toward the company’s attempt at an image reformation. The core of the Pan America is the aptly named Revolution engine, touted as the next phase of a century of v-twin engineering advancements. Tellingly, it’s water-cooled, a method that garnered controversy when it debuted in the nowdeparted V-Rod street bike. The 1250 twin sounds restrained and refined compared to the raw and angry bark of most street-fettled HD machines, though it retains the lovely asymmetrical burble of the signature v-twin at idle. Riders have 150hp on tap, adjustable ride height, and plenty of range from a large fuel tank. The question is, however, whether HD purists will take to riding offroad, or whether mud slugging off-road riders will shell out the big dollars instead of buying a rugged Kawasaki or even a Royal Enfield Himalaya for half the cost or less. While the passion for traditional Harleys rumbles on, with purists revelling in the possibilities for customisation that unlocks a world of choice, there may indeed be room for a water-cooled machine in the stable yet. Replacing the V-Rod in the line-up is a new model tentatively called the 1250 Custom, foreshadowed by tantalising advertising. When the Pan American broke cover,

The heart of the Pan America adventure bike is a new water-cooled v-twin, which could find new life in a more traditional HD frame

Harley’s CEO strongly hinted at a roadgoing version. “This is the start,” said Jochen Zeitz back then. Now, we’ve been teased with close-ups of a copper-accented 1250 Revolution engine in a lower, sleeker frame. If this is a replacement for the V-Rod, it could well win over those who ascribe to the old HD recipe; a 150hp street machine with a modern style, hugely wide rear wheel, bobbed rear fender and a low stance is a lot of riders’ cup of tea. Harley Davidson will never be short of customers. How can you not love such an icon of transport that allows for no two bikes to be the same with telephone book-sized catalogues of custom parts?

Captain Morgan’s revenge u by Andy Bryenton

When Toyota and BMW collaborated on the new Supra and new Z4, the deal seemed simple enough. Combine the might of Japan and Germany’s heavy industry to develop a great new straight-six, for a coupe and drop-top, respectively. While the Supra was obsessively tuned and fettled to feel and perform like its movie-star predecessor, some complained that it was ‘too BMW’. Sort of like claiming that a bottle of pure vodka is ‘too Russian’. However, things get interesting when it’s time to pick an application of the new jointly-built six with its top down. There’s a lot to like when it comes to the BMW Z4 M40i. From its angular looks to its soulful exhaust note, it delivers what the Supra promised, and all with the wind in your hair. The BMW lads have even gone retro, ditching the previous Z-car’s folding metal top for old-school canvas. Then again, if you like things a bit vintage, and you thought that the only way to get convertible thrills with the so-called B58 TwinPower turbo inline-six engine was via Bavaria, you should think again. Morgan, the English sports car company, famously used to build its cars like first world war fighter planes out of wood. The oaken chassis has gone, replaced by aluminium and other high-tech materials. The latest top of the range Morgan, called the Plus 6, is equipped with the same engine as the Supra and Z4.

A tweed suit over a cyborg body; Toyota and BMW’s jointly developed B58 engine has found a home under the hood of the anachronistic, ballistic Morgan Plus 6

With the help of an eight-speed automatic gearbox, that means 335hp and 500Nm of torque, all in a car that weighs about 500 kilograms less than the Z4. That’s the weight of a medium-sized basketball team, pared away in the pursuit of speed. Thanks to the extensive diet, the Morgan will hit 100km/h from a standing start in just 4.2 seconds, and top out at 267km/h. Not bad for a car whose grandad was made out of the same stuff as furniture. It’s a driver’s car for those who drive for fun, and it’s also a thing of artistic beauty.

The only issue is that, in this case, less is definitely more. The mass-produced BMW comes with a considerably lower price tag than the Morgan, which is still finished by hand by people who probably think that the shape of a 1960s Jaguar is ‘a bit too futuristic’. Nevertheless, we’re now in the very interesting position of being able to say that the very best iteration of the latest Supra is actually a British convertible that takes its design cues from before the Spitfire existed. Doesn’t that make the world seem like a much more harmonious place?
