If you’ve taken a drive through rural roads anywhere in the upper part of the North Island recently, you’ll have surely struggled to dodge all the potholes along the way.

The state of rural roads has been somewhat neglected for some time now during successive governments, truth be told. Unfortunately, it’s only been getting worse in the past five years or so. You may have seen a news item recently about frustrated motorists feeling as though they need to take matters into their own hands by attempting a DIY job. People shouldn’t be in a position where they believe they have no other option but to fix roads themselves, for reasons of safety apart from anything else. It’s unfortunate that gravel roads have not been prioritised for funding by the transport authorities, so our rural areas are being left behind. Given the underinvestment in fixing these roads or, better still, sealing them — residents are paying the price. Forcing motorists to adopt artificially slow speeds carries profound implications for productivity locally, to say nothing of vehicle damage and stress. Of course, road safety is hugely important. Still, we also need to ensure motorists can get from A to B as swiftly as reasonably possible to avoid putting further cost pressures on moving goods and services. Given the escalation of this issue and motorists taking to social media to air their complaints, it would be the most responsible approach for me to urge you to report road surface issues to the authorities for repair. In the case of state highways, that’s Waka Kotahi (formerly the NZ Transport Agency). Regarding all other roads, it’s your local government representatives you need to reach. In the meantime, I’ll keep supporting everyone in this area to highlight to the government in Wellington how crucial this issue is. Rural New Zealand deserves better. Let’s demand it.

“When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, it’s devastating. My nana has been our family’s rock our whole lives,” Kieran said. At age 30, he decided to go further than cycling the length of the country and, instead, cycle around it, navigating some of the toughest coastal country on offer. “The whole journey is about 12,000 kilometres and will take me around five months to complete. It’s going to be tough, incredibly tough, both physically and mentally, but it’s nothing compared to what our nana is going through,” he said. The sole owner and employee of KP Building, Kieran, will have to give up his business for a few months for the fundraising campaign, which he’s named The Long Way Home. “It will be a long way home, but I’m excited about it. I’m nervous and scared all in one. When the going gets tough, I know that doing this for nana is what’s going to get me Kieranthrough.”worked directly with Hospice Waikato to make sure every cent would be donated to the charity, rather than using an external fundraising platform that takes a percentage in the money raised for fees. He is also looking for businesses and organisations to get in behind him and support him by sponsoring his journey. “I’m going to need a lot of gear, a lot of food and a lot of support to get me through those months on the road. If there are any businesses or organisations out there that would be interested in supporting The Long Way Home financially, it would be beyond appreciated. Kieran Powell’s nana was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer at the age of 97. She was admitted to hospice care in Waikato, where her family says she has received the most amazing care and support. It ignited Kieran’s spark to do something tangible to help the charity.

“Our swale composting method requires a bit of work to set up, but it continues to provide benefits long past the composting stage.”

Swales are shallow ditches dug parallel to the contour, so they trap water and soak it in. “This is really useful on hard, compacted ground as the compost develops into deeper topsoil. Swales filled with compost and biochar greatly increase the rate rainwater soaks in, so plants or pastures have less drought stress.”

Known as the C2F Project, the initiative of Betsy and David Kettle of Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste works alongside Phil and Jenny Grainger. Betsy and David collect food scraps from various sources such as schools, retirement homes and cafes, and the Grangers compost them at their Kahurere Ridge farm. “Food scraps are a natural fertiliser. Composting on farms keeps them out of landfill which creates healthier soil, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves money on fertiliser,” say the“Jonocouples.Frew is a regenerative farming consultant. He is committed to creating a world that works aligned with nature. “Jono will share ideas for naturally building topsoil, diverting organic matter from landfill on to farmland and creating a cyclical system where nutrients from the town are used to grow more food. “We are keen to get more farmers and landowners on board experimenting with ways to build topsoil as a carbon sink.

“Why do this? Our grandparents, fathers and others fought in the wars, and we feel we had life easy, and our generation has been environmentally destructive. It is time we stood up and fought for future generations by doing our best to reverse climate change. “We began by collecting food scraps in buckets from a local cafe and neighbours. It took a month to get enough scraps to fill the station wagon. “I dug a three-metre long swale and chipped away at the clay to mix a layer of biochar into the bottom. We placed woody mulch on the clay, and food scraps were emptied on to it, and then another layer of woody mulch. We now grow things like bananas, pumpkins and tomatoes. “When Graeme Howard, a resident of Evelyn Page Retirement Village, read about the C2F Project in the local paper he told the management that they should participate. “The nurses and the head chef Clem Martinoli, a permaculture supporter, were excited about growing bananas, and soon, the entire kitchen staff was on board.

“Kindys, schools, greengrocers and cafes joining the project and the residents of Evelyn Page Retirement Village are celebrating diverting over 50 tonnes from landfill, equivalent to 138 tonnes of carbon dioxide avoided. “The C2F will be hosting a series of presentations on the use of compost and biochar to improve soil health and increase soil carbon. “Cherryle Prew of the Soil Food Web will be presenting how to build topsoil by naturally increasing the soil microbiome on September 4 at Wainui Hall, 439 Waitoki Road, from 1–3pm. “Jono Frew and the C2F crew will be holding a presentation at Wainui Hall, Saturday or Sunday, Sept 17 and 18, from 1–3pm. The final presentation in the series is on biochar on October 2 at Waitoki Hall. For more information go to citytofarm.co.nz.” part two next month…

Suddenly the C2F project went from shifting 30 buckets to 30 wheelie bins each month. “There were now 10 times the amount of food scraps coming in weekly, and the Kettle’s station wagon couldn’t take the wheelie bins, so the Graingers purchased a box truck with a tail lift to use. “We acquired a larger digger and fast feeder to mount on our tractor to empty the wheelie bins into the tractor hopper at the docking station we made with our neighbour Mike. We built big bays for the mulch, and after a year, there was a 50m long swale and more needed. “Vegetables grew by themselves, and the swales disappeared under rampant pumpkin and tomato vines. We planted bananas as the main crop as they are heavy feeders and do well with fresh compost. “The banana production is close to becoming commercial, and we see a positive opportunity for more landowners to go to plant-based growing.

“Our truffles are grown in our unique volcanic soils on oak and hazel nut trees. Our truffiere has been producing Black Perigord Truffles for over 18 years,” says Annette. “Our truffiere was planted and developed by Crop and Food NZ (now Plant and Food Research) alongside scientist Dr Ian Hall in 1988. We produce more Black Perigord truffle per hectare than any other truffiere in New Zealand.”

BY PAUL CAMPBELL Orderly belie the mystery of truffle

Annette comes from a scientific background with more than 30 years of experience in soil chemistry and microbiology, giving a unique opportunity to provide significant insight in truffle management. The company is receiving more than $155,000 of government funding for three years to share its knowledge with interested growers so that New Zealand can grow enough truffles for a robust export industry. The business is also researching and developing new products that incorporate the health benefits of truffles. “We’ve already received orders for around 10,000 inoculated truffle seedlings from several hapū, and we’ve helped a Kawhia whānau set up their truffière,” Annette adds. “We’d like to see land trusts and farmers around New Zealand growing truffles on unproductive land. It’s an opportunity to make money out of land with poor soil and could offer a side-line income for farmers if they planted seedlings beside trees used for riparian planting, for example.” truffle company is sharing the secrets of the industry in a bid to get landowners growing ‘black diamonds’ across the country.

To grow effectively, truffles need soil with a high level of acidity,” says Annette. “We’ve been trialling growing spores under New Zealand natives but have found their root system doesn’t support truffle growth — although we’re still experimenting.” The business is run by Ohiwa-based couple Matiu Hudson and Annette Munday. Director of investment programmes at MPI, Steve Penno, says expanding the truffle industry in New Zealand could create new jobs for Kiwis. “This is a great match for the government and sector’s Fit for a Better World roadmap, which aims to boost sustainability, productivity and jobs over 10 years,” he“Thesays.truffle industry has significant export potential as New Zealand businesses are currently unable to keep up with overseas demand. For the newcomer, truffles are akin to mushrooms, and the name derives from Latin meaning ‘lump’, which is rather how they appear, although the old Romans thought they came from lightning striking the ground near trees. Their use in cuisine dates back thousands of years, but rather than ‘cooking’, they are regarded as adding an ‘elegant and robust’ garnishing effect to other foods, rather than as a standalone dish.

Rebecca has 15 years of hairdressing experience, and now stays home to care for her family. “I enjoy walking in the bush, and one day I had the thought to make a hair product to control my curls. I started getting ideas and being of Māori descent I wondered what plants were used in the past. “Kawakawa and tea tree are the mostused plants, but to me, that wasn’t very original as everyone uses kawakawa. I googled tea tree and found an article about a guy trying to make a fragrance from New Zealand native plants, and he had a list of scented plants that he was trying to find. “One photo he had is an epiphyte that is abundant on our land. I decided to infuse it with tea tree oil and see what happened. It was an epic fail, because tea tree oil is strong and didn’t smell good.

Particular measures and time frames are used for the plant to extract the nutrients needed for Rebecca’s serum Rebecca often harvests the plant she needs for her Mauri Essence Skin & Hair products from the bush near her home with her son Falcon “My affirmations kept me going, and I used the plant by itself. When it was infused with water, it began turning into a pearl essence colour, and I saw the finer chemical separating like veins. “I recorded it thinking I was on to something and had to fight negative thoughts of not succeeding, but I kept thanking the universe for my success. When the process was complete and on my hair, I immediately loved the control it gave my curls. “I researched the plant more and found an article regarding the finer chemical make-up of the plant. I knew some of them, like carotenoids, vitamin E and tocotrienols and researched each item individually. “The plant was used for many things in the old days and is absorbent with good nutrients. When I finished making my face product, I took before and after photos of my face, and you could see the lines beginning to disappear in two days. Then I had 15 people of all ages with different hair and skin types try both products.”

Once Rebecca received the feedback, she began packaging her products, calling her business Mauri Essence Skin & Hair. “Mauri is the Māori word for essence or life source. The business name came from a story my nanny told my aunty as a little girl called The blanket of Promise. It relates to the plant and talks about sky father Ranginui and mother earth“AfterPapatūānuku.theirgreatseparation, Ranginui had promised that he would look over Papatūānuku forever. The mist that we see today is a manifestation of the essence that they share between one another, and the plant is created from the rain and the mist. “I asked my aunty about the story because of my idea. For her, it was special because nanny had mentioned that one day the story would make sense to her and my asking about it was just that. “I checked with all the correct industry departments to ensure I am doing things right and am in the midst of patenting my product. The labelling also took a bit of research, and my website lists all the information on the benefits of the active plant compounds. Some of it is really neat stuff. “I can be found online at mauriessenceskinandhair.com or Mauri Essence Skin and Hair Serum on Facebook. “I want people to realise that to me, the whole positive thinking and believing what you put your mind to will manifest. If you remain positive and keep trying, things will work. What you think and what you feel is what you attract into your life. “Harvesting the plant and using it for my products is very special to me. I do everything with love and give thanks to nature. I hope my product benefits people in a huge way. “We absolutely love living in Waipū amongst the trees. It is another level of living in nature. What can you say when you wake up in the morning surrounded by trees and tūī singing.”

The agreement also provides immediate benefits for other Kiwi products such as apples, wine, Northland mānuka honey, and more. Total savings on tariffs for exporters will be worth $110 million annually, with more than $100 million slashed from day one. We’ve fought hard for our dairy and beef exporters, and the deal could deliver up to $600 million in additional revenue. We’ve also secured an eightfold increase in the volume of beef we can export. We’ve improved access for our butter and cheese producers, some of which will now be able to trade with the European Union for the first time in many years. As New Zealand reconnects with the world, we will continue to pursue an ambitious trade policy to boost our economy and support Kiwi businesses, like those in Northland, to succeed overseas.

The agreement will increase the value of New Zealand’s exports to the European Union by up to $1.8 billion a year from 2035 and boost our GDP. It comes on top of our recent $1 billion United Kingdom free trade agreement and is fantastic news for businesses in Whangārei and across Northland. The agreement now levels the playing field for Kiwi businesses. It delivers tangible gains for exporters into a restrictive agricultural market, cuts costs and red tape for exporters, and creates exciting opportunities within the hugely important market of nearly 450 million high-value consumers. The European Union is the largest export market for our kiwifruit growers, and this agreement will bring $37 million in annual tariff savings on kiwifruit exports alone on day one. Bettaflex is a joint support formula to provide healthy joint cartilage function. Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% Curcumin (turmeric) extract. New Bettaflex (per cap) has 400mg of high grade chondroitlin, 400mg of glucosamine and 100mg of rapid absorption 95% Curcumin. How can Bettaflex help? Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance immune function to support joint Researchhealth. indicates that chondroitin is highly effective at 800mg daily.

They say death and taxes are the only certainties, but osteoarthritis must be close to this list. The sales of worldwide joint and bone supplements are a staggering US$11.7 billion and are expected to grow by another 50% during the next ve years.

The majority use joint supplements to treat joint problems, most for osteoarthritis, with about 40% of developing knee osteoarthritis alone. Pain is a great motivator, and people turn to joint supplements for relief — but do they help? There has been signi cant research into compounds found in joint supplements, especially glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric. It comes as no surprise that studies come to differing conclusions ranging from poor to excellent results. While studies and research can be helpful, my criteria for assessing osteoarthritis supplements is simple. I evaluate the effectiveness of my supplements (and others) by whether they help. An important part of my discipline of nutritional medicine is regularly reviewing progress. When someone commences my joint supplements, I contact them after six weeks, then again at three months to see how they are doing. The measure of assessment is again simple; is it working? When someone purchases my joint products, I offer a joint health assessment, which the majority adopts. I ask questions about the problem, including its diagnosis and treatment, plus symptoms and a description of limitations in mobility. At the sixweekly review, we then compare progress to the initial assessment and modify the programme as needed. One thing I can say for certain, if people do not get a tangible bene t, they will stop taking them. Results are my sole measure of whether a supplement is helping. The team at sheep and beef farm Palliser Ridge know this all too well, with a farm manager and ve workers spread across 1,500 hectares. To manage effective communication, the Palliser Ridge team has implemented a suite of digital communication tools. The seasonal nature of farming means everything needs to stay organised, and Palliser Ridge, with support and guidance from Digital Boost, has managed to keep on top of its business by adopting cloud-based software. Using the direct messaging service Messenger, a group chat helps the team communicate the goings-on around the farm. Kimi Bolten-Stewart decided she wanted a career change and consequently turned her hobby of making sustainable feather and leaf jewellery into a thriving business.

“I was a school teacher at Whangaroa Harbour and made bead jewellery and always gave it away for gifts,” says Kimi. “I am also a careers adviser and found that I wanted a change of profession. I regularly had a stall at the Packhouse Market in Kerikeri and a few people suggested I focus on my jewellery full time.

“I continued to work as a sports teacher at Whangaroa until I moved to Kaiwaka recently to be closer to my father and children. I absolutely love it here. The sunset and the sunrises are stunning, and I am enjoying doing photography while out walking the river and going to the“Creatingbeaches.a business from a passionate hobby and redirecting my career pathway has been a great move. One of my suppliers is a Māori enterprise. My fittings are stainless steel and, at times, sterling silver.

“I use recycled rubber for the backs of my designs and paint them with acrylic paint. I don’t use any machines at all. I cut and paint everything by hand. People love the detail and designs. At present, I make mostly earrings and will add more necklaces and anklets during summer. “I have always been passionate about recycling feathers because I love birds and feel a real affinity with them and nature. I select a combination of colour-coordinated feathers to match each pair of earrings and often use more than one feather. “My three ranges include recycled rubber and feathers, feathers only and painted leaves. I also have a mix of leaves, including the silver fern, kauri and pōhutukawa. My second most popular item is my resin-painted kauri leaves. “With my photography, I have a selection of photos with an old wooden dinghy on the water and birds, such as one of a kingfisher resting on the end of the boat. “I attend the Mangawhai Tavern Market and hope to alternate with the Mangawhai Community Market at the school so I can meet people. Gisborne-based farmers Dan and Tam Jex-Blake needed a simple and durable solution to house their farm staff — Eco Pods solved their problem. Tam and Dan own and operate Mangapoike Ltd, a pastoral farming business situated 50km southwest of Gisborne on steep, rugged hill country, wintering 13,000 sheep and 1,300 cattle. They are involved with a new training initiative called Growing Future Farmers, a charitable training trust with a vision to nurture quality people into the agri-business sector. The entry-level provides a two-year on-farm training opportunity for young people with GFF support. Mangapoike brought on two students as part of this programme. However, that involved nding extra accommodation on the property. The couple needed to accommodate the students on their farm with a exible and straighforward solution to minimise hassle and allow for possible changes in the future. Tam and Dan decided to get an Eco Pod for their head stockman to live in, allowing the students to be accommodated in the existing single men’s quarters. Eco Pod provided them with two 7.2m x 2.8m M-Pods on trailers with a deck assembled on-site. A clearlite roof and steps for the deck were alsoTamconstructed.andDan Blake said they were satis ed with the process leading to the project’s completion on time, to speci cation and on budget. “I really enjoyed dealing with the Eco Pods team. They were really communicative and quick to get our pods delivered,” Tam says. “It was so easy for us to work with just one company for everything and know upfront what it was going to cost us.”

Eco Pods are designed to suit customers’ requirements and built to meet NZ Building Code standards for exible function and use. Another bene t of Eco Pods is they’re easily relocatable, either on a truck or its own trailer. A standard portable, self-contained single-room Eco Pod on a trailer costs around $70,000, including GST, not including delivery and installation expenses. We also offer pods to rent for shorter-term requirements. Get in touch and ask about our free design consultation service and partner with us to make Eco Pods come to life for your project. The system works by precisely synchronising the engine speed with crop flow and power output needs to ensure consistent crop throughput at lower RPMs. That means less fuel used for a more efficient result, just what farmers need at a time of high fuel costs. Added to this is a new spout design, which John Deere says will become standard across by Andy Bryenton the entire 9000 series for the new model year. With a longer, optimised contour, the new spout offers more visibility and easier maintenance, making it easier to service.

Series

John Deere’s 9000 harvesters are turning 50, and, like many in the rural trade, they have found that life doesn’t slow down when you hit five decades. John Deere will launch the 9500 SPFH in Australia this month, premiering what may well become its flagship self-propelled harvesting machine for New Zealand as well. Half a century of innovation has been packed under the distinctive and traditionally green hood, with a major leap forward in engine efficiency, coming at just the right time to beat the global costThecrunch.company is calling the new 9500 SPFH forage harvester a fitting milestone celebrating John Deere’s half-century commitment to supporting the nation’s agriculture“Farmerssector.and contractors demand durable high-capacity forage harvesters that consistently deliver maximum throughput to make the most of peak harvest windows,” said John Deere Australia and New Zealand production system manager Stephanie Gersekowski. “The new 9500 is one of three models offering increased power and throughput in 2023, delivered through John Deere’s new JD18X engine, which reduces revolutions per minute while decreasing fuel and oil usage to drive further efficiency gains during operation.”

It’s another example of John Deere’s research and development team listening to farmers in the field who suggest ways to tweak and fettle a successful formula. Fifty years on from the inception of Deere’s big self-propelled harvester, this also means full and seamless integration with digital technology, helping deliver pertinent data for more precise land management and harvesting.

John Deere’s big 9500 self-propelled forage harvester is debuting in Australia this month, with anticipation high this side of the Tasman as well

That slow and low RPM figure is the key to better fuel economy, but there’s another trick up the sleeve of this consummate harvesting machine. To further optimise engine performance and synchronise it with throughput of crops, John Deere’s developers have added what they call HarvestMorion Plus to the new 9000 series line-up, which includes the 9500 and the even bigger 9600 and 9700 units. “HarvestMotion Plus delivers an additional 18, 27 and 48kW of power across the 9700, 9600 and 9500, respectively,” says Ms Gersekowski. “This provides farmers and contractors with 10% more productivity and 10% less fuel usage per tonne harvested.”

Maize as a feed for cattle has become a pillar of the rural sector, delivering reliable feed with a superior energy content when it’s needed. Advancements in maize genetics through careful, scientific breeding have developed cultivars which grow vigorously in Kiwi conditions, producing feed with a consistently high-energy content. Research also suggests that maize or wheat grain can deliver more valuable milk solids proteins a litre. The amazing thing about all of this is not that maize can deliver the goods as an agricultural feed or even that modern agricultural scientists can make leaps of progress through understanding the genetics of maize. What’s most astounding is that the majority of the work required to turn the ancient, hard-kernelled wild grass called teosinte into maize was done long ago, before European peoples even invented the plough. One of the clues, which trace this 9,000-year history of selective planting and cross-breeding of strains, comes from a corn cob thrown away in a cave in Tehuacan, Mexico, at about the time the pyramids were being built.

“Based on archaeological evidence and modern DNA evidence, we already know that maize was domesticated in Mexico some time between about 10,000 and 6,000 years ago,” says Nathan Wales of the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. “What we did not know, using modern DNA or other information, is really how this process gets going and the timing of different events in the past.” The little corn cob is only a couple of centimetres long and carries just eight rows of kernels. Someone harvested and ate this plant 5,300 years ago. However, even then, it was closer to modern maize, of the kind we have developed in recent times into both cattle feed and commercial sweetcorn, than it was to its wildByancestors.thispoint, more than 3,500 years of selective planting had already made the Tehuacan specimen develop unshelled, soft kernels and had increased the size and number on each cob. This process was to continue right up until the ‘discovery’ of maize by Europeans; an event still commemorated in the United States during Thanksgiving. Those by Andy Bryenton pilgrim settlers owed their survival to the strain of maize cultivated by the Wampanoag nation. Still, it was one of hundreds of cultivars across North America, all stemming from moderndayTheMexico.changes made to maize to make it fit for agricultural feed purposes pale in comparison to the huge changes achieved during centuries by indigenous peoples to turn a marginally productive forage grass from the dry southwest into a staple foodstuff. Maize silage took off as a supplement in New Zealand from the 1990s onward, swiftly achieving harvests of more than 200,000 tonnes per annum. By 2010, maize covered more than 100,000 hectares each season, and that figure has only grown into the present day. As powerful harvesters cut a swathe through the maize fields this growing season, it’s interesting to reflect that, 9,000 years ago, this valuable resource began with a nomadic Central American tribesperson taking note of an unusually ripe-seeded sprig of grass. A statue of Xilonen, Aztec maize goddess — maize was developed over 9,000 years from wild grass in what is now Mexico, leading to both sweetcorn and the vital cattle feed of the modern era

Te Mana o te Wai Te Mana o te Wai is a concept that puts the well-being and health of our streams, rivers, lakes, aquafers, wetlands and estuaries at the heart of how we must manage our freshwater resources. It’s a holistic approach which is all about restoring and preserving the balance between water, the wider environment, and the community. While it puts the health of water first before all other considerations, it doesn’t mean that in every case the water needs to be restored to a pristine state before the other needs can be looked at.

OCTOBER - DECEMBER Public feedback on what’s important about our freshwater. MID 2023 Have your say on the draft Freshwater Plan.

Freshwater in Te Taitokerau

We’ve set up two advisory groups to help develop the draft Freshwater Plan. One is a group of tangata whenua freshwater technical experts, and the other includes representatives from primary sector organisations (such as Dairy NZ, Federated Farmers, Northland Wood Council and Horticulture NZ). We’re also talking with community groups, government agencies, local councils, hapū and iwi.

The Government has also set some ‘bottom lines’ we will need to meet for a range of measures of water quality, such as E.Coli (an indicator for disease causing organisms) and water clarity (an indicator of sediment). We all want future generations to be able to enjoy clean water and the natural environments that healthy water supports.

Even if we did, it would still take time before we started to see improvements in water quality. However, we must start this journey together. In the meantime, check out our website if you want to find out more.

JULY ONWARDS Engage with interest groups and tangata whenua and prepare draft Freshwater Plan.

JANUARY - MAY Prepare Freshwater Plan using feedback and advice. APRIL Public can FreshwaterthesubmissionsmakeonproposedPlan. Freshwater Plan reviewed hearingfreshwaterbypanel. Freshwater Plan officially adopted. Who are we working with?

It’s now our job to work with communities to prepare a plan for how we’ll get there – our Freshwater Plan. The Freshwater Plan will include new rules for activities that impact on water quality and freshwater ecosystems. Right now, we’re doing a lot of background work to understand the baseline state of our freshwater, and what improvements are needed. The reality though, is that it’s likely there’ll need to be some big changes just to meet the Government’s bottom lines. To help with setting the standards we want for our freshwater, we’ll be asking people to share what’s important to them about our freshwater towards the end of the year. We’ll share more detail with you on what the Freshwater Plan might look like when we release a draft for public feedback around this time next year. Improving our freshwater is going to be a long game and we can’t expect to achieve all the things we want to overnight.

Two years ago the Government released their vision for halting the degradation of our freshwater systems and key to this vision is the concept of Te Mana o te Wai. Te Mana o te Wai refers to the vital importance of water. When managing freshwater, it ensures the health and well-being of the water is protected first, then human health needs are provided for before enabling other uses of water.

Now, as we move forward with our plan to grow a secure economy for all, we’re providing further cost-of-living support for people in Kaipara. Our new Cost of Living Payment starts from 1 August 2022, and will support more than two million New Zealanders, including many in Kaipara. You will likely be eligible if you earned $70,000 or less for the period April 1 2021 to March 31 2022, and are age 18 or older, but aren’t eligible for the Winter Energy Payment. There’s nothing you need to do to apply for the payment, and the income threshold is based on your individual income, not household income. contributing factor — again, the majority was on rural roads. These are most likely to occur between 9pm and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. A large proportion of these drivers also have drugs in their system, impacting further on their ability to drive.“Speed is a major issue on our rural roads. It contributed to 30 per cent of deaths and serious injuries over the past 10 years, while the state highways with the highest fatality and injury rate have been SH1, SH12 and SH10. “Speed will always determine the amount of carnage caused in a crash. We accept drivers are human, and even with the most conscientious of drivers, we can make mistakes. Whether that mistake causes a death or is one that we can walk away from is largely determined by the speed we are doing and whether we have a safety restraint. “Behind all this are the heart-wrenching stories of pain and suffering, grief and regret. The families who live on without their loved ones and those who live with the knowledge that this could have been avoided but for their actions. “As communities, we need to look out for each other and promote safe driving. One death is too many when it’s our own whānau or friend.”

GRANDPAS ORIGINAL FEEDER NEWPRODUCT I have had numerous close encounters recently with oncoming motorists due to bad driver behaviour like people cutting corners, forcing me to take evasive action — on my side of the road! That means seeking refuge on the shoulder or even worse, completely off the road. There is phone use, texting while driving, people driving with the front wheel on the white line and leaving no room for distraction from either party, plus driving at 80km/h and speeding up to 100km/h on passing lanes — something I find particularly annoying. The ‘me first’ and ‘I can beat you’ syndromes are part of the underlying problem. It is particularly bad at give way signs and roundabouts. Many Northland rural roads are not suitable for a 100km/h speed limit, especially gravel roads. I also believe all secondary roads leading to main highways should have compulsory stops. As for Anne-Marie Fitchett, Northland’s Road Policing manager, this is her sobering take on rural motorists: “Since 2011, the majority of deaths and serious injuries in Northland occur on rural roads. The most common timings are between 3–6pm, although they can occur at any time. In 45 per cent of our fatal crashes, restraints weren’t being worn. “From 2011 to 2020, there were 113 deaths and almost 500 people seriously injured in road crashes. Between January 1 2021 to June 30 2022, the carnage has continued with 19 fatalities on State Highways 1, 10 and 12 alone — along with 73 serious injuries. “Nearly 20 per cent of our deaths and serious injuries involved alcohol as a

We hear a lot about plantain’s potential to mitigate nitrogen loss, but science has shown us chicory can be equally helpful. In research trials, cows grazing chicory excreted signi cantly less nitrogen every time they urinated, reducing the nitrogen load in the urine patch compared to ryegrass clover pasture. With urine patches major contributors to nitrogen loss from grazed systems, averaging 700kg/ha nitrogen per urination in traditional pastoral farming, this is a key bene t for 501 Chicory. Give your grass a rest Hot, dry summers can be hard on your existing pastures, especially if you aren’t able to protect them from over-grazing. Paddocks of 501 Chicory are the ideal antidote. When you graze these, you’re not only looking after your cows, you’re also giving stressed ryegrass a break so it can bounce back faster after rain. What next? Contact your seed rep today. One of New Zealand’s top motorsport venues is set to close, marking the end as the Supercars and the New Zealand Grand Prix. Pukekohe Park is owned by Thoroughbred Racing Auckland, which wants to expand its horse racing activities and consequently is putting an end to motorsport on the circuit. It means a big move for the supercars, potentially to neighbouring Hampton Downs in Waikato. It also means losing what some consider hallowed ground in Kiwi racing history. During the 1960s, Pukekohe replaced the Ardmore Aerodrome as the site of the New Zealand Grand Prix. Famous drivers such as Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark and Graham Hill all took to the tarmac. Bruce McLaren took the chequered flag there in 1964. Denny Hulme raced there, as did Jim Richards and Greg Murphy, plus a veritable battalion of top Kiwi drivers in the V8 supercars league. Aussie icons such as Peter Brock and Dick Johnson regularly came to race wheel-to-wheel with local motorsport heroes. One driver who cut his teeth at Pukekohe is Scott McLaughlin, who has gone on to success in the American IndyCar series. “To be honest, I watched the Supercars for the very first time there. That’s where the fire for me burned. I wanted to be a race driver from the first point I saw supercars on the hill,” said McLaughlin in an interview with motorsport.com. “It’s sad, some of these tracks that are built in residential areas, it’s inevitable it’s going to happen, but especially in New Zealand and Australia. Unfortunately, that’s the way it goes. We’ve got tremendous memories there that we should all be proud of and enjoy for years to come.”Thiskind of story is common not just to racing drivers but to many spectators and fans during the six-decade lifespan of the track. The ‘win a race on Sunday, sell a car on Monday’ philosophy of Ford and Holden during the heyday of the big Commodores and Falcons means that nearly every Kiwi family had a favourite. They looked to the big race meetings at Pukekohe to vindicate the honour of the car in their driveway. It wasn’t just the supercars that raced there, either. Everything from screaming twostroke motorcycles to massive racing trucks has dared the course in the last 60 years. Racing will officially end in early April next year. Already, plans are in train for a fitting send-off and a new venue for events that once called Pukekohe home. There by Andy Bryenton may also be time for someone daring enough to claim a final lap record around the grand old track. They would have to be fast to beat the current 59-second sprint achieved by Glenn Smith in his Crawford DP03 Porsche.

When it comes to life experience, there is more to Northland Rescue Helicopter captain Susan Dinkelacker than meets the eye. Sue has flown for emergency medical services since 2001, despite time away to fly offshore oil rigs and to focus on art — her award-winning sculptures and wood carving in particular. “I grew up in South Africa in a family of glider pilots, and mum had a commercial aeroplane licence,” says Sue. “Dad designed, built and flew his own sailplanes, which won championships and set records. I remember at five-years-old telling my friends how to catch a five-metre thermal, and at the end of high school, I wanted to be a pilot. Dad said being a girl, I was unlikely to get a pilot job as there were many military-trained men pilots available. “He advised me to get a job that paid and fly gliders for fun on weekends. I studied and worked as a secretary while setting three world gliding records which stand to this day. After saving money, I left for America and had my first helicopter flight at 24 years old, and I was fascinated. “I returned to South Africa and worked for dad, telling him I wanted to go solo in a helicopter. I could afford only one halfhour helicopter lesson per fortnight, and then the secretary of the flying school left, so I got the job and was paid in lessons, which is how I got my private licence.

“I ended up flying logs out of the forest underslung under the helicopter in the United States. It was an amazing experience, and upon returning to South Africa, I gained my captaincy and met my husband, Pete, a mechanical draughtsman. “After sailing across the Atlantic, up to South America, the Caribbean and the USA, we decided to settle in New Zealand in 2007, and Northland became home. He tells how he managed to keep going and the simple methods he’s developed for dealing with the mental and physical strains of life on theItland.isa great addition to any rural bookshelf and library with valuable insights for anyone earning a living on the land. In it, he tells how the weather was tipping him over the edge. Every day felt like a disaster, and even at the end of the day, when he was at home with his family, his mind was still out on the farm, worrying about his animals. “I had realised that I couldn’t keep enduring what I’d faced and was seriously considering getting out of farming. I had toughed out all the previous hard times, challenges and stress. Being tough is necessary in all walks of life, but I’d been relying on it year in, year out, and eventually, the well runs dry,” Kane says. “Every day, farmers make important decisions which have positive and negative consequences, and all of them are interconnected. It’s a lot to juggle, but it is usually manageable until something unexpected goes wrong. In those moments, stress sets in.”

on their shoulders all day, physically andHementally.isnow an advocate for mental health in rural New Zealand and a qualified personal trainer who runs fitness boot camps using real farm equipment. With his social media platforms, he also helps others to recognise how pain can be turned into a positive, how to stay calm in the chaos, and how rewarding and enjoyable life can be if you’re mentally resilient and farm fit. His book tells it all.

What Kane came to realise is how important fitness is for coping with the challenges and unpredictability of life on the“Goodland. physical health and strength lead to better mental resilience. The two are intrinsically tied together. Often farmers are so concerned with giving the right nutrients and electrolytes to their animals that they forget about themselves.”
