Oruaiti School student Cordell Grace takes to the waters off Waitangi as part of a kayaking experience at this year’s Enviroschools Ecotourism Expo
The Northland Regional Council introduced the popular Enviroschools programme to Northland more than a decade ago, and there are now more than 90 schools and kindergartens in the programme region-wide. Enviroschools Expos have been held yearly in the region and provide hands-on learning experiences for participants. “It was great to see a younger generation experiencing ecotourism activities that could be replicated in their local areas,’ says regional councillor, Paul Dimery. “I think Expo participants also learned a valuable first-hand lesson that there is nothing wrong with making money — the important thing is to make sure you try to do it in the most environmentally sustainable manner you can.” The 65 students and 12 teachers/ whanau helpers attending the Whangarei expo came from Hikurangi, Hora Hora, Maromaku, Maungakaramea, Parua Bay, Tinopai, Whangarei Primary and Whau Valley schools. They tried their hands at a variety of activities including cycling part of the city’s Hatea Loop Walkway and scootering tracks on land formerly used for marginal farming at Whangarei Heads. They also explored the Abbey Caves and visited the Whangarei Quarry Gardens to see how a pile of ruins was turned into a beautiful tourist attraction.
30 CELEBRATING
YEARS
Thirty-nine students and nine teachers/whanau helpers took part in the BOI event representing Bay of Islands Academy, Kaikohe West, Karetu, Kokopu and Oruaiti schools. They took a cultural tour with a te ao Maori focus through the Opua State Forest, biked in the Waitangi Mountain Bike Park, played traditional Maori games at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and tried their hand at kayaking. “While each of the businesses showcased offered a different experience to their customers, all shared a common passion for operating in a sustainable manner, which benefited both the environment and their local communities,” says Councillor Dimery. “The Expos were designed to allow participants to see how they could connect with the environment in new and sustainable ways, experience employment and social enterprise via real eco-tourism businesses that could be replicated in other areas and experience taonga tuku iho / passing down knowledge. “The events enabled them to take part in memorable learning experiences through having fun and set the scene for them to take part in eco-tourism teaching and learning next year.” More information about the Enviroschools programme is available at nrc.govt.nz/enviroschools.

Bid to eradicate fanworm

A four-strong dive team has embarked on an initial $100,000 phase of an attempt to rid as many unwanted Mediterranean fanworm as possible from the Bay of Islands. The eradication effort is being led by the Northland Regional Council, with support from Biosecurity New Zealand. Biosecurity manager, for the NRC Don McKenzie, says contractors discovered a single specimen of the marine pest while working in the Opua area in early July. The Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii) can quickly form dense colonies, forcing out native species and interfering with their ability to feed and breed. Sabella has also been found growing on scallops in Whangarei Harbour and have the potential to spread onto other shellfish. “Divers were immediately called in to investigate the find, discovering and removing, more than 100 fanworm from the Opua Marina and the surrounding area over the next several weeks,” says Mr McKenzie. The divers were then stood down as biosecurity experts analysed the findings and considered the best management approach, with the maturity, numbers of fanworm and their spread indicating they may have been in the area for several years, probably having hitchhiked in on a visiting vessel.
Members of the NRC had subsequently committed $60,000 to try to eradicate the pest and Biosecurity New Zealand also contributed $40,000 towards the current removal attempt. “Essentially, this is a ‘step-wise’ eradication approach, with a review at the end of each round of diver search and destroy effort to consider what progress has been made and whether continued work is justifiable both economically and practically.” Fanworm have been found across several individual sites, and the council is reiterating it is vital to ensure vessels and any associated equipment — moorings and their rope/chain and fishing nets are clean and free from fouling which may contain marine pests like fanworm. “Under regional council rules, it is an offence to transport marine pests in Northland. Vessels entering Northland and moving between harbours must have no more than ‘light fouling’ on their vessel.” Light fouling is classified as a slime layer or barnacles, and up to five per cent macrofouling. People encountering marine pests should notify the regional council as soon as

Paula grew up in the suburbs in the UK and always had a love of animals. She arrived in the 1980s, and the couple met in a cowshed. “I grew up doing all the usual farming chores including pruning pines, fencing and helping with shearing,” says Scott. “Paula came here to help on a friends sisters farm so she could return to England for a holiday. She then milked for my boss when I was away — upon
my return I walked into the cowshed, and that was that — 30 years later we are still happily married with two sons and progressing in life. “We contract and sharemilked in Clevedon until we decided to sell some of our cows and move north with a plan to advance our future because land was affordable.” The couple named Hillfields, after a farm in Gloucestershire — England, close to Paula’s heart. The 212-acre property is flat to rolling and Scott and Paula have moved from dairy milking to grazing, and have now broken the farm into smaller blocks. “You can drive a tractor anywhere on the property. few beef cross cows and put a Hereford bull to them. “Last year we calved our first Hereford heifers and now have a herd of 30,” says Paula. “We have subdivided the property to sell to future-proof ourselves. We have three blocks of 30 to 35 acres, 100 acres with the house and sheds with a horse arena, and we sold a 22-acre block — the owner is busy planting and creating a lifestyle for the future. “You drive up the driveway on the farm and just go wow. It is an amazing spot, and we started a farmstay last January. People from Auckland come just to stay in the country and explore the area. They do the walks, the Pouto Lighthouse and enjoy the beaches and the beauty, serenity and peacefulness of the district. “They love Charlie, the donkey; he has a huge personality and character. He was my Christmas gift. One day Scott said that I have everything I want and I said ‘nope I have always wanted a donkey’. That Christmas morning I went to feed a friend’s animals and came home to Charlie in the middle of the driveway with a big red ribbon around
him — it was so romantic. Our miniature pony is named Marigold and is blind, she keeps Charlie company and walks around with him. “The farm has served our family well, we have loved being here in the Kaipara and believe people ready to retire or simply have a family lifestyle change would love it here too. “Arapohue has a little school, a bowling club and the Northern Wairoa A&P showground, which is the community hub. You can enjoy twilight bowls, and we are close to the beaches, and Ruawai township with the boat ramp has been a highlight for Scott’s fishing expeditions. “I also have a mare, a foal, a pinto horse and a couple of friends’ horses, so there is enough room for a happy horse family. Being able to go to the beach and ride as far as you want to go is an awesome experience. “We use the local Wrightsons store for our supplies including horse feed, fencing and fertiliser, they have almost everything we need and offer farm consultation visits. “As one guest wrote — ‘Hillfields is a place to rest your mind and body all day,

very good move. We are the traditional grass roots family who progressed from sharemilking to buying a farm and we are now happily secure after working hard to achieve our dream.”

The devastating Port Hills fire showed how much indiscriminate and widespread damage a rural fire can inflict. Fighting these fires is dangerous and expensive. Predictions of drier summers point to a growing hazard. The risk is greatly reduced though, if you check out the local rules for lighting a fire – ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’. At different places, at different times, there will be complete fire bans. Or, you might be able to light a fire with a permit. Or, there might be no permit necessary. You need a clear area for the fire. Make sure you can, and do, put it out before you leave. So, ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’.

It is the festive season and the time of year when families gather to celebrate the birth of Christ, or the summer break and seeing the past year out and new year in or reflecting on years gone by.

T
he Kiwi tradition is that of decorating a tree, and many choose a naturally grown specimen as opposed to artificial, bringing childhood memories back to life, or creating new family traditions and keeping things alive whilst the smell of fresh pine permeates the air. In December 2000 Eric, Jessica and Isaac Munro went to pick a tree from their grandparents’ Christmas tree farm, and that was the beginning of a new adventure. “I was three years old, and we decided it would be good fun to throw a couple
of off-cut trees in the back of the car and sell them on the front verge, and probably to mum and dad’s surprise, they sold,” says Eric. “The following year we got more trees and managed to sell them as well, and from then on we started towing a garden trailer to South Head each December and stacking it with trees. “The name Vinter Christmas trees came about because we live on Vinter Terrace and it is a play on the classic phrase ‘A Winter Christmas’, which we never get here, so it is our little way of getting a winter Christmas. He has retired now, and when we get a load of trees, we stop past his retirement village and tell him what we are doing.” The general sized tree takes three years to grow, and the big ones in shopping malls can take six years. In 2004 the boys’ grandpa stopped planting trees, and by 2006 they purchased his last one. “Luckily the neighbouring farm also grew Christmas trees, and we now get our stock from there. Grandpa and this neighbour had been there 80 odd years,” says Eric. “Each year the business grows, and we have had to upgrade the trailer twice now. Dad made us up some painted plywood signs, and we still do that today. We sell approximately 800 per year now from outside our house. The money we make allows us to pursue our sporting and academic goals. “We are very grateful to the people who buy from us. Last year I travelled to Serbia and Montenegro for water polo, and Isaac is heading off to Uni this year, and the funds will help his weekly needs. “We have found the experience useful when applying for jobs as it has given us people skills and we have learnt the importance of repeat business. “It is nice for sellers to have people wander amongst the trees and choose the tree perfect for them. It is interesting to see if parents let the children choose the tree no matter what it looks like or

if they direct their choice. Using a fresh tree is a great family tradition especially if you go back to the same person each year. We have families who have been our clients for 10 to 12 years — they take the same photo with their Santa hats as the children get a little bit bigger and older. A Christmas tree in the house really sums up Christmas.” Eric says to care for your tree when you get home, cut one to two centimetres off the base of the tree to refresh the cut and place the Christmas tree in water immediately, even if you are not ready to set it up. They are best in a cool spot out of the direct sunlight and always use
clean, fresh water and make sure there is always water as it will draw up to four litres in the first few days. “Grandpa did a neat thing starting his Christmas tree farm, and for us, the pine smell brings back happy memories. I am now 21 years old, Isaac is 18 and Jessica is 23. “What keeps us going is our customers are always happy, and we don’t want to stop as people are relying on us for their tradition — we didn’t expect that.”

Xanthea Nichols grew up on her family’s farm near Dargaville, Northland and as part of her Taratahi training programme experienced farming in Wairarapa.
“M
y father Shawn’s encouragement and positive farming attitude helped me decide I wanted to continue in his footsteps,” said Xanthea. As a second-year student at Taratahi Training Centre, she worked on a 500ha sheep and beef finishing farm and has received three scholarships for her studies. Xanthea is now working on Matapihi farm, a 673ha property running sheep, beef and dairy through Taratahi. “We have 60ha cropping and regrassing,

and this farm has been in the family for more than 100 years. It is a breeding and finishing farm, and the family have been slowly making the farm more intense over the years. “I am loving it here working alongside the manager and owner. At home, my dad runs dairy grazers and does cropping on our 1,000 acre property. The farm has diversified over the years and included running sheep and bulls,” says Xanthea. Shawn also attended Taratahi when he was 16 years old, along with his

friend Ronald. “When I was young, I would go out on the farm with dad and loved seeing him work the dogs and stock. When I was older and visiting Ronald in Ohakune, he told me to move a mob of sheep. I didn’t know what I was doing but succeeded, and decided I wanted to be a shepherd. “I did a Taratahi Taster Course and loved it. Last year I completed my level three and am studying level four drystock breeding — it has been an awesome experience. “I have learnt an incredible amount about the theory side of farming. My favourite thing is working the dogs, and I am breaking in a huntaway, and I have attended Anna Holland’s training courses. Anna has a brilliant training regime, and Lloyd Smith from the South Island is really good, and helps with dog trialling and has great bloodlines. I also have a heading dog and will get another huntaway in a few months.” Xanthea also entered in the Golden Shears event for the experience. “I learnt to shear through Taratahi, and in the future, I want to have time working in a shearing gang as part of gaining more knowledge and progressing through the industry. “The difference between Dargaville and the Wairarapa region is huge. It is a lot colder down south, but the other farmers in the area were really helpful and would check I was ok or if I needed any help. “The district is a good place for training because there are many opportunities, especially as there are more sheep in this area.
“The area has good soil, and we planted ryegrass and had a lot of plantain. In summer it does get dry and hot but the animals adapt, and there is a lot of shelter in the paddocks and plentiful water supply.” Last year for her level four Xanthea received a $2,000 Westpac Scholarship, Jeff Farms $6,000 scholarship and recently a $4,000 Salvation Army scholarship. “My mum is also very supportive and proud of what I have accomplished. It certainly pays to apply for funding as it helps tremendously with costs. After this year I would like to gain large station experience and do my level five diploma. Ultimately I want to become a stock manager and pass my knowledge on to others. “I would love to see more females in the industry, I thought it was going to be difficult to get a job, but employers are really encouraging. In the future, I would like to drive tractors in Canada or Scotland for experience and will probably return home eventually and take over my dad’s business and let him do what he wants. “You can go far in the industry working with the right people. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for my dad’s encouragement. I have drawn from his experience many times, and he has been a huge support and taught me the basics that gave me a good knowledge base. “He is intrigued by what I am discovering, and I am now passing new knowledge on to him in return for the years he has invested in me.”

There was no Doctor at A & E at the time so he got straight on the phone to one to make sure he was doing everything right with monitoring me and running tests. “The Doctor was sure I was having a heart attack - and once he’d finished changing the tyre of an elderly motorist on his way to the hospital, because he was concerned the motorist might have a heart attack if left to do it alone - he was at my side and was right on the button with all the right decisions. “My first round of blood tests didn’t show any problems and I was starting to feel better

He left Kaitaia at 12pm, was at Auckland Hospital at 12.55pm and was ready for surgery 20 minutes later. It was unbelievable how fast everything happened, he says. “In a critical situation you can see how important time is to you. It’s really not possible to get to Auckland quicker. It would have possibly taken about the same time to travel across Auckland.” Four stents later (three in one artery alone), the two hour-long procedure was complete and Cliff felt back to normal. “I was awakened and felt like I was an observer rather than having an operation on my heart as the process is done so smoothly. I am a fit, healthy guy so I am on a mission to reduce my medication and reduce the plaque in my arteries. “My message to everyone is to get in and support the Northland Chopper Service because it needs our support and our donations to save that next lucky person,” says Cliff. Cliff believes it was the speed at which he was transported from Whangarei to Auckland Hospital in the Northland Rescue Chopper that was the different between life and death.

A steep learning curve by Matt King, Northland’s Member of Parliament
So, we have reached the end of the year—or nearly so.
I can think of very few who welcome that with more relief than the Government. It has been a hard year for them and after nine years in opposition that is not unexpected. I am told by more seasoned members of my party that coming into power is a steep learning curve—entirely understandable. But what has surprised those seasoned members is how poorly this Government has performed in so many areas. I have seen it myself—I have seen the Government squirm the House and in the media. I have seen them lurch from one disaster to another, seemingly floundering in the dark with their only leading light, Winston Peters, coming up the rear taking a perverse delight in their discomfort. I am told that one of the ways for a new government to get through the transitionary period is to get good advice from experienced officials. Yet, as we saw with the Karel Sroubek affair and, more tragically, the meningococcal outbreak, this Government seems loath to seek advice, let alone listen to it. My suspicion is that they are still driven outmoded ideological principles
and the festering sore of being a largely impotent opposition for nine years. My view is that they have got to get over that—and get over themselves. We don’t need the petulance that so many of the front-bench are exhibiting. Already, they are looking tired. We need them to use the ChristmasNew Year break to go away, reflect on their mistakes, learn from them, and come back to us with some visionary, pragmatic policies. I wish them luck. As Christmas approaches and 2018 draws to close, I want you to know what a privilege and pleasure it is for me to serve as your MP. I have met many of you and have been asked to help some of you. That I have been able to do both is part of the pleasure and part of the privilege. So, thank you. Sara and I and our family wish you and yours a wonderful and safe festive season and all the very best for 2019. Merry Christmas, Matt. My Kerikeri office will be closed for the holidays from the 20th December to 7th January. But you can still email the team on northland@parliament.govt.nz

Progressing for research New laboratories for Plant & Food Research at the Mt Albert Research Centre have opened after a four-year redevelopment project. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and the Minister of Research, Science and Innovation, Dr Megan Woods opened the facilities in Auckland, which is the largest of Plant & Food Research’s New Zealand sites. The $49 million redevelopment includes work on the seven-storey Hamilton building ensuring Plant & Food Research can continue to deliver highquality science for New Zealand’s plant and marine-based food industries. The Hamilton Building originally opened in 1973 and named for William Hamilton, director general of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research from 1953 to 1971. Few significant developments had been made to the building, and many of the facilities were in need of upgrading. “The new high-quality, purpose-built facilities of the Hamilton, Cunningham and Padfield buildings will allow us to deliver more and better science for our partners and New Zealand,” says CEO of Plant & Food Research, David Hughes. “The Mt Albert Research Centre is a key site in our New Zealand network, housing close to 200 scientists and 150 general staff, about 30 per cent of our total workforce. These staff members work with teams across New Zealand to deliver research that supports the sustainable

production of plant and marine-based food products. “Our science supports New Zealand’s leading companies to create new products and production systems that meet consumer demands and command a premium in the global marketplace.” The prime minister also named the new Plant & Food Research Pou whenua. The ‘land post’ signifies the relationship between Plant & Food Research, the crops grown, and the land that supports crop production. Te Pou Whakairo Ahumara Kai has been carved by master carvers Dennis Conway and Lenard Phillips.

Leading the marketing charge Just Avocados is now working directly with retailers in Australia and further developing key markets in Asia to futureproof returns for growers. The company is New Zealand’s leading specialist avocado service provider and helps to grow, harvest, pack, export and market avocados for growers nationwide. Jacob Darling, GM Group Sales and Marketing for Darling Group, which represents Just Avocados’ fruit in export markets, says ongoing market development is crucial. “As volume increases out of New Zealand, maintaining market relevance and ensuring a good split between customer channels and market diversification is the backbone for great returns and handling additional volume.” Just Avocados is now working both directly and indirectly with Australian retailers, while 45% of the company’s total volume is going into Asia. “This is 15% higher than last season and targeting key markets that deliver results for our growers remains our priority.” Just Avocados has seen a 10% increase in volume this season in Korea, Thailand and Taiwan. The company is also continuing to grow the Chinese market. “While we recognise the value in the later period of the year in Australia, we are certainly focussing
on additional markets in the event that this window is not there in 24 months.” A new business model has been developed in Australia to overcome challenges and better understand, manage and extrapolate the best values possible in the Australian marketplace. “The ability to now receive our own product through our third-party service provider is something that our growers are continuing to benefit from. We have taken 24/48 hours out of the supply chain by taking containers from the wharf directly to our facility. This added value in time is something that our customers are certainly enjoying and will become more valuable as fruit age becomes more of a challenge later in the season.”

Chondroitin: forgotten hero by John Arts
(Part 2) Last edition we looked at a major research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose Chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of highgrade CS is the number one natural compound to help stabilise joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade Chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance
of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly, and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. It comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. Fonterra election date The Fonterra Shareholders’ Council has set the date for a second election for the remaining vacancy on Fonterra’s Board of Directors. Only two candidates from the first election, Leonie Guiney and Peter McBride, obtained more than 50 per cent support from voting shareholders. The rules of the first election state that if not enough candidates obtain more than 50 per cent support, there must be a second election. Voting will open on December 3 and close at 1pm on December 20, and the results will be announced later the same day. “This is the first time a second director election has been required,” said council chairman, Duncan Coull. “After careful consideration, the Shareholders’ Council has determined that the second election will be a vote between the unsuccessful candidates nominated in the first election who wish to re-stand.” The election will be between selfnominated candidate John Nicholls and Jamie Tuuta, who was nominated by the board, having been recommended by the Independent Selection Panel. As with the first election, to be successful, a candidate must obtain more than 50 per cent support from shareholders who vote. If both candidates get more than 50 per cent support, then the candidate with the highest level of support will be elected. If no candidate gets more than 50 per cent support, there will not be

a third election and the board may exercise its constitutional power to make a temporary appointment until the 2019 Annual Meeting is completed — the board may not appoint an unsuccessful candidate. “In reaching this decision your council has carefully considered the background circumstances, the range of possible options to find candidates for the second election, and what is best for the co-operative,” said Mr Coull. “This approach provides shareholders with a choice between candidates who had strong support in the first election, and the timing gives the board certainty to move forward with its performance priorities. New candidates will have the opportunity to put themselves forward in 2019, as part of the 2019 Director election cycle.”

Early 20th century rural women by Geraldine Craw
Walking around some of our displays at the Packard Motor Museum can give the visitor an opportunity to build a picture of life as a rural woman in the first part of the 20th century.
Be water wise this summer DON’T WASTE IT
Early morning, it’s time to light the coal range or colonial oven, ready to heat a billy-full of water and make the porridge. Some of the coal/wood burners in our museum are small, easy to fit in a simple shanty or coal miners’ hut. After breakfast, maybe it’s time to milk the house cow. The museum exhibits an early butter churn and the cream cans for milk storage. Some farmers built a small dairy next to the house where butter and cheese could be made and stored. Soon it’s time to get the children off to school or maybe our rural mother teaches at home. In the early part of the 20th century, families living in rural NZ averaged around eight to 10 children. Mid-morning might be time to bake the bread, cut the firewood, carry water or tend the vegetable patch. Maybe you need to vacuum the house: see our early carpet sweepers or pump-by-hand vacuum cleaners. Time to wash the clothes — have a look
at our early washing mangle. Once everything is dry, you need to do the ironing (no synthetic cloth back then). Many women, owned three to four ‘Potts’ irons. You place the irons on top of the wood burner to heat up. Then using a detachable handle, pick up the first one, iron the clothing until the heat is lost, put it back on the stove to reheat and then pick up the second iron and so on, working through the heated irons — have a look at our display. View our ‘Depression Furniture’. Items include a meat safe (no refrigerators back then), a pantry and were made from the old benzene (petrol) boxes and tins after they were finished with. Evening and after cooking the evening meal (view our collection of potato mashers), it’s time to sit and mend torn clothing, check out our sewing machine collection. Women would sew by the light of a candle (see our old candle holders) or a kerosene lamp.

FISHING & HUNTING
Rules around wild food
100
With the summer season upon us, and as people start hunting and fishing for wild food on a more regular basis it is a good time to remember there are rules surrounding what happens to the food we catch. Fish and shellfish, plants like ferns and watercress, and game animals and birds such as pig, goat, deer, turkey, duck, rabbits and geese may find their way into the family larder and to ensure public safety, the Ministry of Primary Industries has restrictions and regulations surrounding wild food. Such food is known as ‘recreational catch’ and classed as non-commercial. Due to the possible risks, MPI has systems in place to monitor commercial food operations, but no assurances can be given whether meat from wild animals is fit to eat and you do so at your own risk. Any food caught for human or animal consumption and traded is classed as commercial. It includes bartering, supplying as part of a contract or another product or service and using for advertising purposes, as a prize or fundraising. As a recreational hunter, it is important not to sell your catch
under any circumstances as there are procedures surrounding commercially traded food that recreational hunters do not have. Hunters need to be certified to sell what they catch, and the processor dressing the wild animal must also be certified by MPI — this ensures that procurement, hygiene and processing of the products is controlled and monitored before reaching consumers. Hides, skins, horns or antlers that are not for human consumption can be traded, and waste material like animal fat and carcases can be sold or disposed of to a renderer. It is also illegal to sell recreationally caught fish — the only exception is whitebait. There are also laws about what you can and can’t do when butchering and serving your catch. You can cook and serve it to your family and household, and hunting party or a restaurant may prepare and cook the fish or wild game you have caught, and

serve it for you. Recreationally caught meat can be served on a marae for traditional activities within the iwi or hapu. If you are hunting, get permission before entering someone’s property and always have a personal locator device with you in case of emergency and always identify your target before pulling the trigger. Out fishing? Make sure you are aware of the possible health risks of marine biotoxins and pollutants such as sewage leaks, which can affect fish and shellfish. Know your catch limits and sizes as ignorance is not an excuse. Remember to wear lifejackets, and always have a communications device on board. Whatever it is you are doing, always be wary of areas which may have had 1080 dropped. BUSINESS PROFILE
Big Red for water Owned and operated by Duncan Mackay, Big Red Trucking Ltd provide general cartage services throughout the Bream Bay area including drinking water delivery. “We are Ministry of Health approved for delivering drinking water. This means our tanks are tested every three months, and we are also registered under the Food Act ensuring that we are ‘safe’ water carriers,” says Duncan. “Being certified helps protect the public from catching illnesses such as E coli and poisoning and ensures we don’t collect our water out of rivers and elsewhere, which has been known to happen.” Duncan has been in the industry for four years, delivering water and general cartage services including metal, hay and topsoil around the Bream Bay, Waipu, Ruakaka, One Tree Point, Mata, Mangapai and Springfield areas.
“With summer coming it is important to keep an eye on your water tanks and give me a call if you are getting low, as demand can be high. Buying in advance is always your best option as this avoids unnecessary stress of having no water and helps protect your pump. You don’t realise how much you need it until you don’t have it.” It also encompasses people who have animals as under the Animal Welfare Act it is the owner’s legal responsibility to provide sufficient food and water for all animals. “Water is delivered in 10,000-litre loads, and most people go through at least one truck of water a year if they are careful. Water matters most
It is often taken for granted that fresh, clean water will always be available, but many rural people are caught out as water shortages become a reality during summer. system controlled by a timer is best as moveable sprinklers are the least effective for saving water. Check your water tank levels and order extra water early from your water delivery person to ensure your daily life is not interrupted. Repair any leaking taps, tanks and pipes early as a small drip uses more water than you think. Sixty drips a minute uses 21 litres a day — over a year that is some 7,644 litres wasted. Catching rainwater in suitable containers is a good way to provide water for the garden and chickens. Remember to keep your house gutters and roof clean to stop debris and rodent or bird waste entering your tank and check if your tank needs cleaning annually and ensure regularly that possums and birds have not fallen in and decayed. Water matters most as it is needed for a healthy life for animals and humans alike. Taking care of it is one of the import aspects of ensuring your farm, lifestyle block and household run smoothly.
Water is a vital part of everyday life, and people don’t always realise only a certain amount is in our tanks, rivers, streams and dams, especially those who have recently moved from urban areas. Sometimes demand is greater than supply with an average New Zealand family uses 250 to 300 litres of water for each person daily. In a typical household, the bathroom, kitchen and laundry use 25 per cent of the daily volume with the toilet using 30 per cent and the last 20 per cent used outdoors. It is also important to know that under the Animal Welfare Act it is the owner’s legal responsibility to ensure any animals in their care have adequate water and find supplied. When watering your garden in the summer remember a hose running at full volume uses 2,000 litres of water an hour and water low to the ground and slow when it is cool and calm, not in the heat of the day or in windy weather when water will evaporate rather than soak in. Watering by hand or on an irrigation

The Windmill solution A Comet D Pattern windmill was recently installed on Ian and Maggie Hutchinson’s farm at Ahuroa as a solution to their water supply needs on the family farm. Comet Windmills have been Australia’s leading windmill for more than 139 years providing solutions for farmers, commercial, lifestyle block and residential clients across the country. They have been successfully pumping water across the Australian Outback and beyond, and the designs are known to be legendary for sensitivity, simplicity and great strength whilst being low in maintenance, highly efficient and longterm sustainable investment. “Maggie and I have been restoring the farm including the fencing and the water supply since we purchased the farm from her family in July last year,” says Ian. “I am a consulting engineer and to rectify our water supply issues and
enhance our productivity we decided to travel to Australia to see the genuine windmill options as part of our research knowing they use them in the outback with no power and little maintenance — we were very impressed.” It is the firm belief of the company that renewable energy will be the energy of choice for future generations. The Comet Windmill is a direct acting windmill, which means the power of the wind works directly onto the pump through the up and down stroke created by the revolution of the wheel. The pumping power is increased due to fewer working parts than other windmills that lose power through friction. The simple design means there is less power lost and lower

wind speeds needed to start pumping. Windmills come in a variety of sizes from six foot to 30-foot wheel diameter with the option of a system designed to suit individual specific requirements. “We chose a large system which has blades reaching twenty-two feet (seven metres in diameter) — it is a considerable size and exactly what we need. We have a bore that is approx 210 metres deep, and the windmill works fantastically for us. We now have water at essentially no cost forever really. Even all the bearings in the windmill are made of specially sourced Australian hardwood timber as they last longer than modern materials.
“The farm has been in Maggie’s family since the late 1800s, and we have recently planted 150,000 natives and invested in a pedigree Red Devon cattle stud. We are impressed with our decision to invest in the Comet windmill. Wind power is cheaper and very efficient, and the company have a wide selection of products available, so you are sure to get a system that suits your needs, whether you are on a large farm or small block. We use ours for all of our water pumping requirements including for our gardens, stock and personal water supply and it makes for a great feature piece as well.”

Water quality checks The Northland Regional Council annual summer water quality tests began on December 3 at some of Northland’s popular beaches, rivers and lakes. The testing looks for bacteria and is used to gauge the risks of contracting gastrointestinal and other infections while using beaches, rivers and lakes for swimming, water sports and other forms of recreation. Hundreds of samples will be taken from 46 popular coastal sites and 14 freshwater locations across the region with results posted on the ‘Can I Swim Here?’ section on the national environmental reporting website.lawa. org.nz. NRC chairman, Bill Shepherd, says testing will run until March 4 next year and weekly results will be forwarded to the Whangarei, Far North and Kaipara District Councils, the Northland District Health Board and other interested parties. “We let the health board and relevant district councils know of any results showing elevated bacterial levels, typically within 48 hours, and it is their responsibility to take any further action needed,” says Chairman Shepherd. “This can include further site investigations to establish the source of any contamination, public warnings not to swim or gather shellfish and putting up permanent warning signs at the worst sites. “Results can vary quite considerably from year to year, largely due to whether
we experience a dry or relatively wet summer. Last year we had a wetter summer, and this was reflected in our results, which were generally worse than normal, especially for coastal sites.” Last summer, 571 out of 644 samples at coastal sites and 111 out of 196 samples at freshwater sites over summer met national ‘guideline values’, meaning they were considered suitable for swimming. In contrast, during the 2016/2017 drier summer 642 out of 643 samples at coastal sites and 169 out of 182 samples at freshwater sites met the guideline values. “The council advises people not to swim for two or three days after heavy rain, which can carry run-off from land, or if there are warning signs indicating unsafe water. “As a rule of thumb, don’t swim if the water looks dirty or murky, smells

More than 50 people from across forestry attended the FISC/WorkSafe Forestry Summit, which aimed to identify what else should be done to improve health and safety performance. “The summit opened with a moving introduction by the whanau of Hone Whaanga, a 38-year-old Gisborne forestry worker killed last year,” says National Safety director of the Forest Industry Safety Council, Fiona Ewing. “Hone’s mother and widow spoke of the need in the sector for manaakitanga — caring for each other. They also spoke of the concept of kaitiakitanga — guardianship, which combined with manaakitanga provides a framework for looking after one another. “The key issues identified by participants on the day will be important inputs into the development of an action plan for what else the sector needs to work on to take the next step in improving health and safety.” Ms Ewing says three key themes emerged as having a fundamental impact: the need for forestry owners/ managers to take greater responsibility for the issues within their sphere of influence. The need for leadership

culture to change across the supply chain and the need for worker wellbeing and the pressures on health to be actively managed. “A number of possible initiatives were identified and a small working group is being formed to support the next steps. These will include some immediate initiatives and some projects that are more long-term. I would like to thank everyone who took part in the summit, and I will give an update on these activities next year.
“The results of a survey of people working in forestry suggests there have been improvements in health and safety over the last couple of years, but there is still work to do. “Most respondents said leadership had improved, and a slight majority said culture had also improved. The survey was done as part of an evaluation of FISC’s work programme. The results, together with the outcome of the summit, will help shape FISC’s future work programme.”

FORESTRY
Oi!
Recognising good employers Northland company, Forest Protection Services Ltd were recognised as the overall winners of the Employee Development category at the Primary Industries Good Employer Awards, acknowledging the achievements of companies operating in the primary sector. “One Northland company, Forest Protection Services Ltd, owned by Kevin and Kylie Ihaka, was voted the overall winner in the Employee Development category and was highly commended in the Safe and Healthy Work Environment Award,” says Forestry minister, Shane Jones. “Their Tupu Ake programme — delivered in partnership with NorthTec and Te Matarau Education Trust — offers Rangatahi the chance to develop life skills and qualifications while in full-time paid work and, in the highly seasonal forestry industry, also offers year-round employment. The company, operating in a highrisk industry, has an outstanding safety record. As minister of forestry, it is great to see a company in the industry performing so well. “Good businesses provide the foundation for a prosperous community. It is great to see Maori businesses recognised that fully understand the connection between their wellbeing and the wellbeing of their employees, their whanau and their wider
communities. They are outstanding New Zealand companies.” Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor says the primary industries employ about 350,000 people — one in seven working New Zealanders and as many as one in three in some regions. “Attracting and keeping this hardworking talent is a significant challenge, and we recognise those exceptional employers who are committing to good employment practices such as training, paying and treating staff well. “I equally acknowledge those working throughout the sector who contribute to these sustainable, high-value business models. Good employers help to attract and develop the skills we need for today and tomorrow. Investing in the workforce is critical to the future of our primary industries and a key part of this is providing attractive careers for the next generation of workers. “The first-ever MPI AGMARDT Primary Industries Good Employer Awards have recognised exceptional employers across the dairy, seafood, forestry and horticulture sectors.”
Other winners were: Innovative Employment Practices — Ben and Nicky Allomes, Hopelands Dairies Ltd (Dairy). Highly Commended — Jenny Buckley and Dave van den Beuken, Jaydee Partnership (Dairy). Employee Development Award — Highly Commended went to Patrick Malley, Onyx Capital Limited (Horticulture). Safe and Healthy Work Environment — Michelle Cherrington, Moana (Seafood). Maori Agribusiness — Miraka (Dairy) and Highly Commended was Zac Te Ahuru, Ruapehu Agricultural Developments Ltd (Forestry). The Minister’s Award went to Ben and Nicky Allomes, Hopelands Dairies Ltd (Dairy) with Highly Commended going to Bruce Beaton, Kristen Nash and Maurice Windle, T&G Global, Pipfruit (Horticulture).

FORESTRY FOCUS ADVERTORIAL
Sustainable thinking protects environment Northland Forest Managers (NFM) is one of Northland’s most established forest management companies. They have offices in Kerikeri and Dargaville and have been servicing growers from just south of Whangarei right up to Kaitaia for over 20 years. One of the truly unique things about this company is the spectrum of services they offer. In addition to harvesting, they provide marketing, forest management and silviculture services. Something else that sets them apart is that everyone on the management team has a wealth of practical, hands-on forestry experience. They’re flexible and will work with forest owners of any size. Whether you’ve got 10 hectares out the back of the farm or 30,000 hectares of plantation spread across the region, they can do the job. General Manager Neil Geerkens says “we contract in our crews so that we can match the skills and equipment to the work required. That allows us to keep our overheads down which is reflected in the return to our clients”. He adds “it also means we can offer them high-tech haulers and top end gear that they might not otherwise have access to. Ultimately it’s all about operating more efficiently to deliver a better return”. He says the company prides itself on financial

transparency and providing a variety of options so that the forest owners can decide which best suits their financial situation. Another important consideration for forest owners’ is their environmental responsibility. That’s an area that the Harvest Management and Planning team is all over. They focus on minimising the forest owner’s impact and working as sustainably as possible. NFM believe that starts with building roads and landings to the required standards to control the sediment and includes initiatives for replanting deforested areas. They run pest and weed control, fire and kiwi protection programs. They also

monitor forest health and work closely with DoC and Northland Regional Council on environmental issues. Neil says all forest owners need to be thinking sustainably to meet the recently introduced National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry. “We spend a lot of time and money making sure that our team is up to date with all the regulations. When we take on a job, we also take on a lot of the responsibility for Health & Safety and Environmental compliance.” Talking to the team it’s abundantly clear that they have the skills, passion and experience to complete any forestry task to the highest standard.

Marketing farm woodlots Forest Owners Marketing Services is a national kiwi-owned and operated company working with farmers to get the best for their personal farm grown woodlots. “We are a diverse range of people and we work together to get positive results for every individual client,” says Northland regional manager, Franco Meyer. “We are woodlot farm specialists and are a niche market company. Our staff are specifically trained to cut the right volumes of wood, at the right time, for the right price for our people. You don’t get the service we offer everywhere in the market.” The market determines the value of the wood, and it is important that each lot of product is marketed accordingly. “Here at Forest Owners Marketing Services we have the ability to care for the whole lifecycle of your forest, from planting and silviculture — thinning and pruning, harvesting and management; we are able to offer our expertise and management all under the one roof. We have seven crews working in the Northland region managed by Lance Aukett.
“Lance has been with the company for some five years, and Franco is the newest member of the management team with 12 years of industry experience. “Due to the new National Environmental Standards legislation for forestry there is a significant focus on environmental health and safety, and with my expertise in health and safety, we are able to provide a high level of health and safety standards to our clients. “Our teams are professional, and we pride ourselves on our ethics, integrity and high standard of workmanship. Because we are specifically focussed on farm woodlots, this sets us apart from others. “We have a very personal rapport with our clients and to us, they are not just a number but are important people. We aim for the best possible results for each individual client, and we guarantee payment for all of the work we do.”

The team have more than 30 years of construction experience and are guided by Justin’s passion for versatile and functional products for all aspects of rural life requirements in New Zealand. “We have two key areas which we are focussed on — commercial products that meet the tough requirements of working farms and lifestyle products for when it is time to relax with the family,” says Justin. It was the latter that inspired him to spearhead the Stoney Creek Smokehouses. “All of our products are built with durability in mind, using high strength fibre and steel reinforced concrete.” Precast Products Ltd specialise in livestock troughs, cesspits and hazardous substance lockers. “With summer almost here it is important to ensure your stock have a good water supply. Our troughs are unique to the world and are patent pending. “They are strong, durable and low maintenance and allow stock full access to the water.” The brass water inlet is underneath eliminating damage to the inlet pipe. The ballcock float is situated in the middle,
away from the animal’s heads and the ballcock arm is protected by reinforced concrete in the bottom of the trough meaning no more broken ballcock arms or reservoir lids with a cleanout bung is situated directly opposite the ballcock to allow for easy yearly maintenance. Precast Products also offer a range of fireplace hearths, Stoney Creek Smokehouses and gas bottle holders.
“The smokehouses are also unique to the world stage. I created it myself and am very proud of our designs. With the fishing season around the corner, they make great Christmas gifts for the person who has everything. “Call in and see us or phone us with any enquiries you may have. National standard for organics
Increasing moves towards the production of organic meat will be assisted with the introduction of a national standard for organic production as a government bill next year to help give consumers confidence in organic claims and businesses certainty to invest and innovate in the growing sector.
Damien O’Connor, agriculture and food safety minister
“It will also help grow our organic export trade as it brings us in line with international approaches to regulation. We are one of only two of the top 25 organic markets in the world that have voluntary instead of mandatory standards,” says agriculture and food safety minister, Damien O’Connor. “The global demand for organic products is increasing and our organic sector has responded with growth of 30 per cent over the past couple of years, and is now worth about $600 million a year. A majority of public submissions earlier this year supported the government’s approach of a single set of rules for organic production. I am pleased we can now move ahead with the changes so our agribusinesses can extract more value from what they do as soon as possible.” Primary industries spokesperson for the Greens, Gareth Hughes said: “We know organics is key to sustainable land use and helps reinforce New Zealand’s reputation as a trusted producer of highvalue natural products.” The next step is to draft an organics bill to be introduced next year, and there
will be opportunities for the public and the sector to feedback at the select committee stage. Mr O’Connor was joined by Mr Hughes for the announcement at the Horticulture Export Authority’s release of the report Barriers to Our Export Trade in Wellington.

Red Snap’r has done it again Electric fence monitoring has now been around for just beyond two years since we introduced the Red Trout IP Energiser to the farming community at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek in 2016. We have three units available, eight, 12 and 16 output Joules. The energiser will let you know via your mobile phone in real time the exact voltage on the fence. If there is a drop in power below the minimum voltage you have programmed, you will be advised immediately with a message to your phone. In other words, there are no additional gadgets required, just the IP Energiser and a mobile phone. To make matters even more interesting for you, we do not charge for this extra convenience. The three IP energisers can be powered both by mains or battery, and they are offered at around 30% less than similar energisers on the market which do not have this monitoring facility. Top ten list of tough choices by Andy Bryenton
At a time of the year when top ten lists and awards ceremonies abound, one of the toughest decisions has to be the coveted title of car of the year. Here in New Zealand that choice is informed by a varied and challenging driving environment — and auto manufacturers never make it easy to select a winner, with new offerings striving to excel in areas as varied as fuel economy, environmental impact and sheer luxury.

while Kia’s surprising, potent Stinger packs a turbocharged punch and proves that the Korean marque can mix it up with the big boys in terms of performance. Mercedes bring the sophistication and pedigree of their larger models to the hatchback market in the form of the A-Class, and two Volvos — the XC40 and
XC60 show that the Scandinavian badge is not just about safety — it stands for style, individuality and nimble handling as well. All said a tough group from which to pick a winner. On December 12 that’s just what the judges will do, crowning one of these machines NZ Car of the Year.

However, there can be only one. Unlike in other international selections, just a single vehicle will be crowned best of the best. The final selection for this year contains some wild cards indeed, all of which vary from the current reigning 2017 champion, the Skoda Kodiaq. BMW’s X3 is the priciest offering in the range and brings the ethos of Germany’s ‘ultimate driving machine’ to an evolved and stylish four-wheel drive platform. Subaru’s Forester approaches the same ground from a very different direction, as a ‘grown-up’ and more advanced iteration of the still popular go-anywhere wagon of yesteryear. Meanwhile, Skoda’s Karoq is looking to repeat the stellar performance of the Kodiaq, with a different spin on the same alchemy which made its stablemate number one. Toyota’s Camry is a far cry from the original of the same name, adding a little of the excitement and stylistic edginess of its big brothers in the Lexus range while retaining Toyota’s dependable reputation. Holden brings a bit of the best of the old and the

WHEELS
Out of the wild continent by Andy Bryenton
The year is 1985 — state of the art in home computing is still less powerful than today’s microwave ovens, big hair is king, and the charts are topped by the ‘king of pop’, Michael Jackson. Out in the dust and heat of Africa, a team of motorcycle designers and racers is about to make history. The Paris to Dakar might be the ultimate endurance test for a vehicle — spanning mountains, deserts, tropical heat and burning sand; it’s long been associated with a level of automotive obsession bordering on the unhinged. It forges great stories — and even better machines. In the 1980s, Honda embarked on a series of four victories in this gruelling crucible of motorsport, stamping their mark once and for all as the masters of off-road adventure bike design. The masterpiece they presented to the public in 1989 was called the Africa Twin. Now, three decades on, the 2019 model of the Africa Twin is a fitting tribute to that legendary machine — and more. Not content to pay homage to a moment in sporting history with a few badges and a neat colour scheme — although the new Honda is dressed in racing livery — the engineers behind the Africa Twin have added the best of modern tech as well. It’s the kind of stuff
SAFETY FIRST
that those original Paris to Dakar riders would have wished for. The engine is bigger and more powerful — a liquid-cooled unicam fourstroke parallel twin beefed up to 998cc and equipped with fuel injection. The massive fuel tank delivers up to 500 kilometres of riding between pit stops. Throttle by wire technology means that a rider can select from three distinct riding modes, with a fourth available on the DCT model for pure off-road action. All-round the ground clearance has been improved, weather protection and wind reduction fettled, and rider comfort for long-haul trips brought to the fore. It’s a machine, which could confidently tackle the wilds of any continent — that inspires huge confidence for those out there who want to explore New Zealand. We might not have roasting hot deserts and steaming jungles, but with mud, gravel, blacktop and wild weather, having a machine built to devour the miles despite all nature’s whims makes for excellent peace of mind.

Power boost on tap by Andy Bryenton
The Volkswagen Amarok has been a benchmark ute for style as well as a utility since its inception. At the time, people wondered if a German car maker could fully grasp the ethos of the farmers’ and tradies’ working machine as we use it here in the Antipodes. Nevertheless, the makers of the ‘people’s car’ grabbed the concept with both hands, delivering a vehicle with presence as well as practicality. Now the original four-cylinder engine under that sculpted hood has been swapped out in a transplant operation of epic proportions. Welcome, then, to the 2019 Amarok V6, boasting 268 horsepower, 580 Newton-metres of torque and the ability to deliver all of it to exactly where it’s needed thanks to VW’s tried and tested 4Motion all-wheeldrive system, complete with self-locking points in the drivetrain to deliver almost supernatural grip. With a ladder chassis, that big engine, huge load capacity and towing capability, you could be mistaken for thinking that Volkswagen has stripped the Amarok down to pure muscle, perhaps eschewing some of the comforts, which made it the ute of choice for those who wanted a bit of luxury with their utility. In fact, they’ve worked hard to make the Amarok v6 an even smoother ride. A prime piece of this puzzle is the servotronic power steering system, which assesses the speed at which the Amarok is travelling and adjusts itself accordingly, for fingertip parking moves and responsive, crisp handling on the open highway.

Between this innovation, a wellsorted suspension set-up and the responsiveness of that turbo-diesel six — with a perfect little boost of power coming right at overtaking speeds — the Amarok’s six-pack has been compared not just to other leading utes on the market, but to VW’s own Golf GTI — at

least when it comes to handling. There’s no way the venerable supermini could ever lug as much over the kind of terrain the Amarok dispenses of with ease. This ute bridges the gap between practical tool and driving pleasure to make a hard day’s work that little bit easier.

Landcorp chair appointed
Investing in reducing emissions
The government has appointed, a primary industries leader, Dr Warren Parker, as director and chair of Landcorp.
Dr Warren Parker, newly appointed director and chair of Landcorp
Dr Parker was chief executive of Scion (the NZ Forest Research Institute) and Landcare Research and was previously CEO of AgResearch. He currently holds a number of board roles including on Predator Free 2050 Ltd, Farmlands Cooperative Society, Genomics Aotearoa and is the chair of the Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group. Until recently he was chair of the New Zealand Conservation Authority. “Dr Parker is one of the most experienced experts in New Zealand’s primary industries, operating at the most senior levels across sectors as a scientist, teacher, manager and, most recently, in governance roles. We are lucky to have someone of his
experience and ability to take over the chair’s role at Landcorp, the nation’s largest farming enterprise,” said finance minister, Grant Robertson. Dr Parker has a PhD in animal science and was previously a professor of agribusiness and resource management at Massey University, where he spent 18 years in various roles, including supervising the 9,000 stock unit Riverside Farm in the Wairarapa. Landcorp is New Zealand’s largest agricultural enterprise. Its core business is pastoral farming, running 1.5 million stock units — sheep, deer, beef and dairy cattle — on 126 properties totalling 372,115 hectares under management.
HAVE A SAFE AND MERRY CHRISTMAS
The launch of New Zealand Green Investment Finance Ltd is a joint effort by business and the government to reduce New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. The $100 million fund is a central plank in the government’s plan to transition to a clean, green, carbonneutral New Zealand and it delivers on a Green Party Confidence and Supply Agreement commitment and will focus on accelerating private sector investment into emissions lowering projects. “Tackling climate change is a priority for this government and business involvement is crucial to our success. No one can opt out of the impacts of climate change. This fund helps business to opt into the solution,” said Prime Minister Jacinda Arden. “Lowering emissions will require innovation and action from all sectors. This fund means the government is bringing cash and know-how to the table to partner with business to deliver a clean, green future for everyone. This new investment fund is an important component of New Zealand’s plan to build a clean, sustainable, low-carbon economy that has both lower emissions and profitable enterprises.” Climate Change minister James Shaw says the company will be a commercially focussed investment company, which will work to invest with business to reduce emissions while making a profit. “I want to thank Cecilia Tarrant for accepting the role of chair of NZ Green Investment Finance Limited. We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Cecilia’s calibre in this important leadership role. Board director, David Woods, brings a wealth of international banking experience to the company, as well as his more recent experience leading work with the social impact investor, Oikocredit International.
James Shaw, Climate Change minister
“We are also incredibly grateful to have Sir Rob Fenwick on board as ambassador for this project. Sir Rob’s background and expertise in business sustainability make him a fantastic fit for what NZ Green Investment Finance Limited is about. New Zealand faces a big job in upgrading our economy and infrastructure. New Zealand Green Investment Finance will help deliver financial backing to help ensure that the upgrade is fit for purpose.” Mr Shaw says the government’s $100 million start-up capital injection is intended to stimulate new private sector investment in low-emissions industries; with returns over subsequent years expected to pay back the Government’s investment and see NZ Green Investment Finance stand on its own commercial footing. “More and more investment dollars are looking for clean, sustainable ventures to invest in. Establishing this fund positions New Zealand to attract its share of that investment capital.”
