“I’d like to thank all of our advertisers for their continuing support, and of course our readers, who have offered us so many great ideas in 2019 and who persist in telling us how much they enjoy the publication. We have so much positive feedback from you all, and we love to hear from you! If you know of someone doing amazing things in farming, someone achieving, innovating or preserving our history, please tell us. Chances are our other readers would love to hear about it too.” Meanwhile, lead journalist of the publication and a regular byline on our Northland feature stories, Ann van Engelen, reflects on a year of news that has spanned the tumultuous and the quirky. “I grew up around the Northland district with my dad being a share milker and dairy company union delegate. I have been writing for Northern Farming

Lifestyles for five years now. It has been an absolute pleasure to tell the stories of the different people in our farming and rural communities across the region and beyond. “Connecting with clients and producing business profiles and promoting local businesses has also been a pleasure, and I look forward to working with past, present and new clients in the future. I do hope you all have a relaxing festive season.” Betty and Ann also wish to take this opportunity, on behalf of the entire team behind the Northern Farming Lifestyles, to wish all our readers, advertisers, supporters and locals a very merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season. Your monthly farming publication will return in mid-January with a fresh harvest of news, views, feature stories and valuable information to start the new year right!

Changes to NAIT

Federated Farmers is heartened that the Primary Production Select Committee has recommended logical and workable changes to National Animal Identification and Tracing legislation. “It is clear that select committee members listened carefully to representations from Federated Farmers and others. As a result, the NAIT Amendment Bill (No 2) reported back to the house, a step in the right direction,” said Feds’ Meat and Wool chairperson Miles Anderson. “Upfront is an acknowledgement that changes to the NAIT Act are only part of the planned improvements to the identification and tracing system and that significant progress is still needed on operational and ease-of-use matters to ensure we have a system that is fit for purpose and able to deal with foreseeable future risks.” The original proposal suggested the government would own the core data entered on NAIT. Federated Farmers was dead against this idea when the existing legislation already enables access to NAIT information in a transparent manner. “We felt that this was the Crown trying to appropriate private property without compensation and are happy the select committee is recommending this provision be removed. Federated Farmers argued that unwarranted layers of complexity would not add value and is pleased the select committee

recommended responsibility for moving animals remains with the PICA (‘person in charge of animals’) and not transporters. “There was also a proposal to remove a provision for ‘unsafe to tag’ animals after five years, which was ill-conceived. The committee has seen this for what it was and has asked that after five years this be reviewed, not removed. “Federated Farmers is right behind the drive to get NAIT working and to lift compliance rates as quickly as possible, but this comes with additional farmer obligations and liabilities as this process accelerates. “Even some experienced farmers still mistakenly believe that when they order animal ear tags coded with their PICA details, and fit them to the ears of their cattle, their job is done. There is another vital step. To get on the phone or computer and register them with NAIT, even if the animals are destined for the processing plant. Too many farmers are thinking the tags are traceable and are

not finishing the rest of the process. MPI is cracking down and handing out infringements at $150 for each animal. Currently, the ministry appears to be limiting this to five infringements at one time, but it doesn’t have to. What is more, it is proposed that the fine increases to $400. We farmers simply have to get better at this.”

The prestigious Australasian Stock Judging and Parading Championships come to New Zealand next year, where more than 70 Australians and New Zealanders will compete for the Australasian title across 10 competitions. “It was a privilege to represent New Zealand as both the Dairy and Beef Parader. It is something I am very passionate about,” said Cara. “I have been involved in A&P showing for more than 11 years and have loved every minute of it. I have been competed around New Zealand and have been able to showcase what I have been accomplishing with breeding and explore new opportunities. I enjoy breeding my own stock and have 28 head of cattle, and they are my pride and joy. I have been selling registered bulls for two years and use different bloodlines and maintain a focus on improved height and feet. I think they hold a lot of promise to add to the breed.” Cara has experienced numerous successes with her cattle, both in and out of the ring. Winning the Dairy and Beef Parader titles and was named the Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador. “I also enjoy judging livestock and breaking in cattle for other future exhibitors and plan to continue to revolve around the A&P movement, including the breeding, showing and selling my Beef Shorthorns throughout New Zealand.” As the Rural Ambassador, Courtney says Cara stands out as someone to watch in the agricultural world.

“She is passion-driven, successful and has a keen interest in supporting the movement. Cara was also our overall Northern District Senior Beef Parader in 2017/2018. At the competition in Australia, she was randomly assigned a young animal one hour before the class started, giving them a chance to acclimatise before taking to the ring. Competitors then had to swap animals, parade without stock sticks, and quickly identify the animal’s strengths and weaknesses to show it off in the best way possible to the judge. These competitions are no quick or easy feat, often taking over an hour to decide the winner in each. Courtney has been involved in agriculture since she was 11 years old. “I have since established my own Ayrshire Stud, Inca Ayrshires and am a senior Ayrshire Judge and my involvement in agriculture exhibition has taken me around the world,” says Courtney. “Earlier this year I was invited to judge the Ayrshire section at the Kaitaia

r a t w s g c n h i a r i n p g s e n I by Ann van Engelen

Russell School student Ruby Tauri has been on a quest to get plastic straws on school milk packs removed as a way to protect the environment.

N

ine-year-old Ruby petitioned Fonterra to stop using straws in the Milk for Schools programme, which is now launching a strawless option for Northland schools. “Living in Russell is very nice, and the beach is lovely. I feel strongly about looking after the environment because I am kaitiaki — the future protector of our land, waterways, air and everything Aotearoa. We need to lead the way for change,” says Ruby. “If we see any rubbish, we clean it up. Recently my mum, brother and I picked up half a bag full of rubbish on the beach. Animals, birds and fish are known to think plastic is food and

a seagull could feed it to its babies — fish eat it as well. It clogs their belly, and they starve to death because they think they are full. “Our teacher Mrs Young taught us about plastic, and I got the idea of stopping plastic straws from the school milk cartons because we remove the straw from the cartons and most of us poke a finger through the hole to drink our milk. “We love that Fonterra provides us with milk. It is important to grow strong bones and stay healthy. Some families don’t have much food, so having milk helps fill their tummies. We love drinking it after fitness, and some children Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for

Ruby with some of the plastic straws the Russell Students has collected from their milk cartons have theirs when they are doing silent reading. It can be expensive, so it is really kind that Fonterra gives us milk for free, we appreciate it so much. “I am thinking of creating something for the wearable arts competition with the straws. Last year I entered the Far North Go Green Award with my little brother. I am trying to help people understand that you don’t need all

the packaging. I made a dress out of My Food Bag wool cool insulation packaging and repurposed cable ties. We won a merit award in the Recycled Fashion category. Now the excess wool cool insulation gets used in our school garden to create a cosy bed for the chooks. “The Fonterra people thought not having straws is a good idea. Having

less plastic is good for the environment, animals and people. The more we help animals and nature, the better because they can’t look after themselves. Metal straws, coffee cups and reusable bags are much better.” Fonterra’s director of sustainability, Carolyn Mortland, says the company recognise the growing concern around plastic packaging. ”We are working really hard to make our packaging sustainable and know it is an issue schools have been worried about. We took the opportunity to have Ruby come in and talk to us about her idea and have since had a lot of positive feedback from schools on making the change. While our plastic straws and wrappers on our milk packs are recyclable, we appreciate some plastic straws don’t always end up in the recycling bins and are at risk of ending up as litter in the ocean. One solution we have been exploring is to move away from the small 200ml single-serve milk packs towards a one-litre format, which is a really sustainable packaging choice. The one-litre pack doesn’t use straws, or plastic wrapping and allows schools to minimise milk wastage by having more control over serving size. Every one-litre pack removes the need for five singleserve packs.” Ruby says: “It is great that Fonterra is making a difference and changing its packaging immediately. They told me that they would be 100 per cent sustainable by 2025.”

avid and Pip Fullerton milk nearly 600 Holstein Friesians alongside their sons Alex and Dean. “We utilise genomic screening, which has been one of the biggest advancements in cattle breeding in the last 100 years. Through this we can tell before a heifer calf is weaned if it is going to grow into a profitable, highproducing dairy cow,” says David. “The process dramatically shortens the time it takes to identify important

We import our embryos from Canada, the United States and Holland and are world-renowned for our genetics work.” The families’ stud, Waipiri Holsteins, holds the New Zealand record for the top registered three-year-old Holstein Friesian cow, which produced

Flathills Awe Kleo Red ET she was bred from overseas genetics and is one of the first animals the Verwaayen’s genomically tested as a calf 1,292 kilograms of milksolids in the 2009/10 season. “We rear 160 to 200 replacement heifers a year and plan to genomic test 25 per cent of them using a service offered through Holstein Friesian NZ. We have exported bulls to Tanzania, China, Malaysia and South America and are exploring opportunities to sell semen into Zimbabwe, Vietnam, the Philippines and Ecuador. Most farmers in those countries can not afford cooling fans, so we need to know our animals can tolerate the heat. Genomic testing has huge potential to increase dairying’s

profitability, and we’d be foolish to ignore the information it provides. The testing is most reliable and beneficial for New Zealand dairy farmers using semen sourced from overseas bulls. We can use the results to make informed decisions about which heifers to keep and breed from, or to sell.” Holstein Friesian NZ president Hennie Verwaayen says the reliability of the information provided is similar to a bull with 100 daughters, which are producing milk and whose traits, such as udder conformation, calving difficulty and fertility have been assessed.

Henni and his wife Kerri were both born into dairy farming families in Holland. “My family have mostly dairy farmed since the 1500s and my parents always had Friesians as the breed come from Holland. I stuck with them here as I want to milk a cow that is a good size and does good production. We are after a good cow, with a good udder and good constitution that lasts long and allows us to lower the rotation rate, so we don’t have so many rotations for the amount of cows we milk. “With the testing, technology allows us to recognise good cows early on. In particular, the second and third generation of tested animals will give us a better direction of the breeding decisions we have made. “We will see if they gave what we want so we can adjust our breeding decisions and concentrate on animals that make a difference. In years to come with environmental issues, testing will enable us to know from an environmental perspective what the animal is like early on to use our resources as effectively as possible. “We milk 380 Holstein Friesian cows with our children Harvey and Lucy. We first used genomic testing in 2016 on four calves born from embryos imported from the United States. Two of the calves were bulls. “They were almost identical to look at, but the testing revealed one was among the top five in the world for certain traits. We use the service provided through Holstein Friesian NZ to test all of the overseas-sired replacement heifers. If

Hennie and Harvey Verwaayen with a bull born from an embryo imported from the United States the results identify genetically superior heifers, we can do embryo transfer work with them or mate them using sexed semen.” The test has the added advantage of verifying parentage, which improves the accuracy of records and means they don’t have to pay for a separate DNA test. “New Zealand is languishing behind in adopting this technology, and our association is endeavouring to change that,” he said. “In June, Holstein Friesian NZ teamed up with Weatherbys Scientific

in Ireland to offer a genomic testing service. Farmers can choose whether the data is reported through DataGene Australia or the Council of Dairy Cattle Breeding in the United States. Animals can also be tested to determine if they will produce sought-after A2 milk and if they are polled. “Currently the annual value of genetic gain in the New Zealand dairy herd is worth around $11 per cow, which is almost twice as high in Australia where the use of genomic screening is more widespread.”

Tailored legal SoluTionS limiTed

COMPANY PROFILE Tailored Legal Solutions is a boutique law firm based in Dargaville which specialises in litigation, business support & strategy (including employment) and estate planning. When asked why she established and based her specialist legal practice in Dargaville, Barrister & Solicitor Emma Smith answers quite simply “because it’s home”. More practically, Emma says “modern business practices mean our business is conducted via email, internet and phone to such a significant degree that being a specialist practice no longer requires you to be based in Queen Street in Auckland. I travel as and when I need to. The rest of the time we get the work done right here — we avoid the rush hour and costs that go with a “city-based ego”. Emma has been working with clients in Northland for 9 years following her return from the UK. After establishing Tailored Legal Solutions in January 2015 her growing reputation now sees Emma working regularly with clients throughout New Zealand. Regularly appearing in the High Court, Emma has built her business on a solution-based philosophy: “Sometimes winning the argument is not always the best outcome. Often some lateral thinking finds a much better outcome much earlier in the process.” Also working with her clients on their business and estate planning & strategies, Emma encourages clients to prepare for the “red-flag” moments: “Time spent discussing and preparing for the hard issues can often seem difficult but it is healthier and cheaper than leaving matters to be litigated at a later date.” When asked about the firm’s growth and ongoing success Emma suggested that we hear from some of the clients she has worked with in the past 12 months: “Having found myself in the position of needing an exceptionally smart lawyer, I read an article introducing Emma Smith. I am involved in a lengthy property dispute. At every step Emma has shown her warmth as a human being and very quick, incisive mind as a barrister and solicitor. Emma has always been direct as to the possibilities and unshakable to any threats posed. All my interactions with Emma’s law firm Tailored Legal Solutions have been positive and supportive of my situation. Thank you Emma for being an exceptional person and lawyer… I can’t tell you how dark some of these days have been. Your skill and support have kept me closer to the light… sincerest regards” AB, Property Litigation Client, Fielding “Emma Smith is not your “typical lawyer”; short in stature, drives a ute, practises out of Dargaville and gives hugs. She’s also practical to a tee, highly professional, with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Emma has worked with us for the last three years on both complex and high-profile cases. Emma and her team always go over and above for us with support and service to make sure that we get the best possible outcome.

What more can we say? We would recommend Emma and her team in a heartbeat.” Business Owners, Commercial Litigation Clients, Whangarei It gives me great personal pleasure to write this testimonial for Emma because when I first heard of her, I thought she and her deeds must in fact be a myth. I had spent the previous eight years looking for a replacement for my barrister who had died — a Dr of Laws and a delightful humble brilliant man, a hard act to follow. After 13 false starts with other barristers all claiming to be able to take on a banking Corporate, I was starting to despair. Then I heard of this barrister from Dargaville who had taken on the case in the High Court, of a small local farmer who had been appallingly treated by the same bank. The opposition found themselves underprepared in the face of a superb education, comprehensive coalface experience, and knowledge of the law. All this backed up by Facts, Ethics, Integrity and Accountability with real skin in the game. Emma’s business model and commitment are unique in NZ. Emma also has the delightful gift of the vernacular that would leave an East Coast drover’s dog in no doubt of her opinion and the next minute make an opposition barrister wish they had stuck to their Uni holiday job.” Retired Farmer, Banking Litigation Client, Hawke’s Bay “As a company engaged in business across the country, access to timely, accurate and relevant legal advice is something which provides us with more than just peace of mind. As we operate from Dargaville we are extremely fortunate that we have available a local expert that offers the accessibility and availability for a one on one service. We know that Tailored Legal Solutions is there to put all of Emma’s knowledge and experience, combined with her common sense approach, at our disposal whenever it may be required.” Business Owner, Commercial Clients, Dargaville I was a Dairy farmer affected by the SWAP loans sold by a bank: foreclosed on and the farm sold. After the Commerce Commission investigation into the banks misselling of SWAPS I submitted my own proceedings in the High Court. After receiving direction from the Court that the Company had to be represented by a Lawyer I approached Emma. Also from a farming background she can relate to you practically and formally. I was impressed with her solutions and proposed direction for my case. Emma’s experience in the UK shone through in her professional knowledge of, and ability in, the corporate world. Her preparation and presentation in court is thorough and impressive. The Bank’s Lawyers were not going to pull the wool over her eyes. We both enjoyed the challenge of taking on the big guys. I’m delighted to say after going to mediation a settlement was reached. Dairy Farmer, Banking Litigation Client, Dargaville

All things drainage

Richard Leslie of Leslie Drainage Ltd is based in Whangarei and has been operating in the industry for some 20 years. “My wife Karyn is the office manager, and we are all about helping people, giving them a go and putting them on the right track. Shaun Beuker was my first apprentice and is now a 50 per cent shareholder of the company with his wife, Nicky. Every customer is more than happy with the job we do. It shows in the recommendations we get as we travel anywhere from Wellsford to Cape Reinga,” says Richard. “We offer all aspects of drainage from subdivision work to private domestic households, farms and businesses through to agriculture. We do anything drainage whether farm or box culverts, river crossings, ponds and septic systems — to name a few. “Our professional team of seven are able to set up irrigation systems and complete general drainage work. We clear drains around creeks and farms and are able to remove fallen trees from rivers if need be to clear the water flow. It is important to do now to get ready for the coming months. Come winter and the rainfall, if your creeks are not cleared it causes flooding as the water

has nowhere to go if its natural path is blocked. Flooding causes erosion as water will find its own way through your property, and that can be devastating. “We clear farm dams and ponds. Leslie Drainage design and install sewage treatment systems and assist with council approval and consents. We can help with damaged or failing sewage pipes and septic systems. We get in boots and all to unblock cowshed drains and the like. “With summer on its way, it is important to ensure your water tanks are connected to downpipes to maximise water collection because water is of the essence and buying it is another cost. Summer is also the time to clear

creeks and waterways as there is a lot less water flow. You get a lot of silt, and it is a lot easier to control the sediment washing downstream further at this time of year. “I am a second-generation drain layer, my father was a drain layer as well, and I am carrying on the tradition. We value our clients and are very passionate about the trade. Drilling down into water issues by Andy Bryenton

There are a few core inventions that have helped turn us, as a society, from nomadic hunters into civilised farmers and builders. The wheel isn’t even one of them; amazingly the Inca people got on well without it! Along with fire, pottery, language and grain storage, the well is one of those things which has taken us from caves to skyscrapers. The earliest cities, in places like Sumeria and Egypt, were built around wells. A well 5,000 years old is at the very centre of Cairo, for example. Water was scarce in these dry lands, and a well was an asset worth defending, as it was also a de facto trading post, army mustering point and hub for irrigation and animal breeding. Water makes farms, farms make wealth, and wealth, eventually, makes empires. However, today’s wells are very different from the hand-hewn stone-lined ones of antiquity. These days it’s not a dowser with a forked stick who seeks out underground water. Hydrologists can tell a lot from the shape of the land, as well as from the kind of rock that underlies it. These professionals can also use groundpenetrating waves to find water, acting like the sonar ‘ping’ a submarine uses

HAVE A SAFE AND MERRY CHRISTMAS

to detect enemy vessels during wartime. Gravel, limestone, porous cracked-up rocks or underground sandstone can trap large quantities of useful water. Once a likely spot is found, the trick is to drill down deep enough to establish a productive well that will last the distance through all seasons. More than just a hole in the ground, a modern well is usually a bore sheathed with long-lasting materials to prevent cave-ins and erosion. Deep in the underground water table, the bottom of the well is made of sturdy mesh or perforated pipe to allow water in but keep it flowing and stop it from clogging up. Now a suitable pump is needed to lift water to the surface. Modern wells usually utilise electrical means of pumping, which vary in kilowatt power according to the depth of the bore and

Even in arid landscapes, rainfall on hills and mountains eventually reaches underground aquifers, ready to be used as a managed resource

the volume required. When it’s dry above ground, water reserves replenished by rains months or even years past await beneath the surface. Finding such reserves, and engineering the means to tap into them, is no longer a job or superstition and guesswork, but one conducted with satellite maps, specialist drilling trucks and advanced technology.

FISHING & OUTDOORS ADVERTORIAL

Leabourn’s Rarotongan experience Leabourn Passenger Services is preparing for the August 2020 Rarotonga experience, offering travellers a first-hand cultural opportunity. “We are planning our Rarotongan trip for August when it is cold here and nice there. Our tour includes experiencing local food, attending the community markets, visiting the beautiful Cook Island church where we hear their amazing singing and share morning tea — where they spoil us with local food,” says HR manager Louise Pitama. “The Rarotongan people are absolutely beautiful and are extremely hospitable. It is like a mid-winter getaway. We have an orientation day with a talk about pearls, an explanation of the island history and culture with a progressive dinner going into three different homes. Typically we have raw fish, fresh fruit, an amazing garden walk and have an explanation of how the families acquired their land as you cannot buy the land there. We typically sit on the decks with entertainment, of either the bus driver or local person singing and playing the guitar and ukulele.”

There is a day shopping in the village of Avarua and an island night at the Edgewater Resort where the group stay for seven nights. “The Edgewater presents an amazing dinner and show with dancing, storytelling and another beautiful island feast. Sometimes the little children dance, and that is spectacular. We do the Koka Lagoon trip on a glass-bottom boat with an opportunity to snorkel or watch the fish being fed. “The hosts explain how they are helping coral grow — as it dies from sunscreen use. We see how they climb a coconut tree and hear about the life of a coconut. There is a coconut oil factory tour, and a school visit giving us the opportunity to take gifts such as books, colour pencils and other educational items that are not easy for the locals to get. “We go to the Whale and Life Centre Museum, and in the past, we have seen

blue whales passing by the Edgewater Resort and have watched a calf be born. We have a buffet-style dinner in an Umu hut, go to the famous Trader Jacks with seating under the verandah looking across at the beautiful water with our evening meal. Every day has different experiences with time to sit at the beach or snorkel. “Our clients have an absolute ball and take the opportunity to get off-farm and have a break. Rarotonga is fun and

similar to New Zealand in the good old days. We also offer various local trips right here in New Zealand, which are perfect for retirees who are able to take time away. “We look out for people with special needs and those in walking frames. People work as a team and build great friendships on our tours.” Refer to our advertisement on this page, contact Louise@leabourn.co.nz or ph 027 497 5842.

Around the world, timber harvesting operations are at their most difficult and dangerous where the terrain gets steep. Businesses who specialise in tackling the extraction of valuable timber from such environments have adapted by developing skills and processes, which dramatically minimise the possibility of accidents, but nature presents some tough challenges. New Zealand is no exception, with timber being harvested from slopes up to 50 degrees in some places. It has led to some very real research into the deployment of robotic means of extraction, getting hands-off chainsaws. Even, in some of the more extreme scenarios, dreamed up by robotics engineers and artificial intelligence developers — removing manpower from the forest altogether. Right now, there is no substitute for the skill and experience of a real seasoned veteran behind the controls. However, hybrid systems, those that play to the strengths of both man and machine, have come to the fore in trials around the world. Perhaps one of the earliest and most striking was the development in Finland of John Deere’s walking Timberjack. A six-legged robotic vehicle, which could navigate tough terrain too steep even for tilt-cab tracked harvester tech. While this melded the insight of a

human operator with AI to keep all six legs planted, wheels and treads have proven more enduring, in machines like Deere’s latest, the 1270G eight-wheeler, deployed in Scotland and featuring the ability to bend in the middle like a giant mechanical inchworm. Even in this arena, where a human operator is at the controls, drones are being used to coordinate activities in the forest, using AI ‘swarm’ tech to report back to the base of operations where timber is loaded onto waiting trucks. Even more extreme is the spiderlike Menzi Muck, with independent ‘legs’

able to position its ball-like knobbly wheels in any position for stability. Even the well-established process of extraction via overhead cables is set to evolve if robotics and AI have their way. If machines can chain and bunch logs for transport, and pick out and saw down trees without human control, the steepest slopes will prove no challenge. However, who will guide and oversee the ‘bots? As yet there is no way to program the intuition and experience earned through years on the ground among the timber.

SHOP LOCAL IN WARKWORTH A gift three times at once by Andy Bryenton

Christmas can often become a frenzy of last-minute shopping, pushing through the crowds at big-box retailers to snag the last example of that must-have toy or seasonal bargain — but it doesn’t have to be. Around the world, people are turning away from the mass commercialisation of the season and embracing the concept of giving something sourced locally. There’s a list of very good reasons for this trend. Starting with the fact that a gift made or sourced from where you live is likely to be more unique or personal than one bought from the same catalogue that was delivered to a million other letter boxes. A work of art, some gourmet local cheese, preserves, smoked meat or turned wood, upcycled clothing, pottery, jewellery or crafts. All of these things speak of where they’re from — bringing a little of your home town to friends far away. Then there’s the benefit to local business. The adage ‘a dollar spent locally is spent thrice’ really does apply. First, you’re supporting a local

person, be they a business owner, craft market stallholder or even the original manufacturer or artisan. They are then able to use that money to further their business, invest in new stock, pay staff and create jobs, or, as so many small local firms do at this time of year, support charitable causes. Your dollars go another round instead of heading offshore, and that helps us all. Originally, Christmas was a small-town celebration, situated in the middle of the northern hemisphere winter and all about pulling together to make it through the coldest part of the year. The good food, small gifts and shared rituals, like carolling or decorating a town Christmas tree, were less about unboxing toys than about creating a sense of community. We may not live in times when we must unite against the

ice and snow to survive as townsfolk in small communities, but the same message still applies economically.

Make it a local Christmas this year, and spread some cheer among your neighbours and friends.

Taipa’s intelligent bridge The community of Taipa has celebrated the official opening of the smartest bridge in New Zealand. The new Wi-Fi-enabled, two-lane Taipa Bridge has been opened to traffic since Labour Weekend. Monday, December 2 marked the official handover of the bridge to the community by Associate Transport Minister Shane Jones, who performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and the roll-out of the free Taipa Community Wi-Fi. “It is a really exciting moment to see the completion of the first pilot in community Wi-Fi being successfully rolled out across the region,” said Mayor of the Far North District Council, John Carter. Hundreds of people from the local community joined local hapu, business representatives, the New Zealand Transport Agency and its construction partners at the event, which started with a dawn blessing and the unveiling of the carved wood inserts on the waka end panels adorning both ends of the bridge. Joseph Stuart, Northland Inc’s general manager Business Innovation and Growth, and chairman of Northland’s Digital Enablement group said the benefits for the town would be significant. “The key thing is that the wireless provides free connectivity to a community where it didn’t previously exist. That is important in itself, but it will also aid visitors to the area and make Taipa more accessible and connected. The community project had been three

years in the making. We are planning to put two or three more in place across Northland in 2020, and this is just the start. Take the role of NZTA, for instance — it is not solely about building bridges for them. It is also about their engagement in economic development, and community Wi-Fi is an important component of that initiative.” The state-of-the-art Smart Cities street lights, positioned at both ends of the road adjacent to the bridge, will be equipped with Wi-Fi, CCTV and a programmable driver that will improve safety and connectivity in the area while also controlling lighting output and saving energy costs. “It is a unique solution to the problem of connectivity, and the first time street lights have been deployed in this way in Northland. This technology will have a hugely positive impact right across the board, from education to tourism, to local history, culture and the overall safety of the area. It will improve engagement within the community while also unearthing a host of new opportunities and possibilities for the people of Taipa. The most striking visual feature of the new $19 million bridge is undoubtedly the tauihu (prow) and taurapa (stern) end panels of a seafaring waka adorning each end of the structure. It acknowledges Taipa as one of the first landing places in New Zealand of the Polynesian explorer Kupe.”

Are we low-hanging fruit? by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

Recently National’s spokesperson for climate change biosecurity and agriculture Todd Muller and I held a series of public meetings throughout the Northland electorate. Our intent was to listen to what you have to say about the state of politics in our nation and the issues that concern you. Our electorate has many diverse communities, but it quickly became clear to Todd and to me that there is a ground-swell of deep concern as to where this government is taking us — the track the government is taking us down. That track, you told us, is taking us too often to the farm gate. You told us that those in the rural communities feel they are being singled out by this government. Measures such as the Zero Carbon Bill and Water Quality Consultation are unfairly skewed toward the rural community as if we are the chief pollution culprits. We are not; cities are. On the water quality issue, this government has come up with a totally unworkable one standard fits all, that does not take into account the unique characteristics of our rural communities — yet does virtually nothing to address big city polluters. Carbon emissions seem to be the sole domain of cows, according

to the government. Their solution? Get rid of the cows and plant trees. Thank goodness for Todd Muller, who was able to address these real concerns and to give clear concise solutions. Unfortunately, none of these solutions can be enacted while we remain in opposition, and we can only hope that not too much damage is done in the meantime. The most prevalent question at those meetings remains unanswered — why is this government picking on rural communities? I don’t have an answer to that, but I have a view. First, I don’t think they understand the farming sector. That, I guess, is a given. Second, and far more insidious, is that they find us an easy target. Low-hanging fruit. No votes to be gained here. Well, let me tell this government that if they persist on taking us down the track they are, this particular fruit will come back to bite them.

AN EVERYDAY PLAYGROUND by Ann van Engelen Hamish Browne and Robyn Budd treat their 106-hectare property, Black Pond Farm, like going to their personal playground rather than work every day.

“W

e are both passionate about sustainable farming and purchased the farm two years ago and intend to leave the land better than we found it,” says Robyn. “We have placed 17 hectares of native bush under a QEII covenant and really want to make sure we do better for the environment, leave something positive and do things as close to nature as nature intended. “Tree planting is definitely part of our commitment to restoring the land, and we have already planted 2,500 native trees. Planting trees on a large scale is not without its challenges, though. It is really expensive and a lot of hard work to get them all in the ground. We want

to see results as quickly as possible on the land, and that is when we decided to apply for free trees through Trees That Count for next year.” The couple was approved for 1,200 native trees, which were funded through the Trees That Count marketplace by Vero, and they have already made plans for where they will be placed during the 2020 planting season. “Trees That Count is a programme of Project Crimson Trust, a conservation charity that has been at the heart of tree conservation in New Zealand for close to 30 years. They run the country’s first tree marketplace, which connects funded and gifted trees to community groups, iwi, local councils, schools and individuals looking to grow their own

planting projects. They are on a mission to help Kiwis plant 200 million native trees by 2026.” Trees That Count is supported by The Tindall Foundation and Te Uru Rakau through the One Billion Trees programme, alongside the many businesses and individuals who are donating through the marketplace. “We have a number of springs that start on our property. So we really feel a responsibility to provide an environment that encourages the natural stream life cycle to restore itself and thrive,” said Hamish. We will plant half a kilometre of waterways with the funded trees and plants, which will provide shade and help stop erosion and sediment from entering the stream, restore fish and vertebrate life and stop any nasties heading out into the ocean. When we first started

regenerating the land, we planted 51 hectares with 13 grass varieties so that we have something in the ground that will grow in every season. “We have a 45 to 60-day grazing rotation for our stock, and we started to notice a big improvement in soil quality and animal health within a year. It really was a lightbulb moment for us as we saw things change so quickly. “The pasture is starting to grow properly now, and the animals are eating the good stuff and getting all the nutrients they need, and of course, what they poop out helps the soil. The breeding programme has also been part of it and has contributed to the health of the animals — they are so healthy and happy. For us, there are three things that made a big difference. Our organic farming coach, Greg Barclay from Soil

The couple have planted 17 hectares of native bush under a QEII covenant to help create a positive environment for future generations

Connection offered invaluable support in helping us define our goal, what steps to take in order to reach this goal, and keeping us focussed on the progress we are making. It is easy to get trapped in the ‘what needs to be done still’ treadmill. “We learnt in the early days, that our pastures and soils systems, must be given the time and space to get their highways and byways working at an optimal level. There is no room for shortcuts here, and we learnt to enjoy the process and be patient. We always have a Plan A. However — it is inevitable that at times, nature, the weather or other commitments prevent

this happening. When it does, we design a new plan and then get on with it. We focus on what we are going to do, and not what we didn’t manage to do — this keeps the whole experience positive, fun and enjoyable. “We hope that some of what we have been able to achieve in a short time at Black Pond Farm will inspire other farmers to give it a go, but whatever happens, we will be pretty happy in our little corner of the world. It will just be an ongoing and growing scenario for us working with nature and turning this into a beautiful, idyllic spot. We absolutely love what we are doing in our playground every day.”

The 2018–19 cow census shows cow numbers have remained relatively stable with New Zealand reaching record milk production for each herd and cow. Dairy companies are processing 21.2 billion litres of milk containing 1.88 billion kilograms of milksolids — both up 2.4 per cent on the previous season. The latest count showed that New Zealand has 4.946 million milking cows — a decrease of 0.9 per cent from the previous season. “New Zealand’s dairy sector is continuing to evolve, and the days of significant cow number growth may be over, as numbers have remained fairly stable over the past five years,” says DairyNZ Chief Executive Dr Tim Mackle. improving their environmental management in recent years. They have been doing this while stepping up their onfarm efficiency to produce more milk from fewer cows. More efficient milk production has benefits in areas such as greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses. “The dairy sector employs 46,000 workers and earned New Zealand $18.1 billion in export revenue for the year to June 2019. Looking to the future, dairy farmers have made commitments as part of the Dairy Tomorrow strategy to build the world’s most competitive and resilient dairy farms. To protect the environment for future generations and be worldleading in animal care.” The report reveals an increased uptake of herd improvement services, as farmers seek higher performing, healthier and more efficient cows through the use of herd testing and artificial breeding. LIC chief executive Wayne McNee says this increased investment on herd improvement shows farmers’ commitment to improving the quality of their herd assets to drive better sustainability and productivity outcomes. “New Zealand farmers are farming with improved precision and taking advantage of herd improvement services to produce more with less. We are proud of the role we play to help ensure cows around the country are year-on-year more efficient at converting grass into milk, in turn enabling dairy farmers to reduce their environmental footprint.

“A total of 3.67 million cows were herd tested in 2018/19, up 1.6 per cent from the previous season and the highest on record. The number of cows mated to AB increased by one per cent to 3.59 million cows. The most significant increase was in the number of yearlings mated to AB, which jumped up 11 per cent to 230,497 — the highest in the past nine seasons. “Although the sharp increase in the number of yearlings mated to AB shows farmers want to maximise genetic gain across their whole herd, it is also likely to have been influenced by Mycoplasma bovis. Farmers are looking to reduce their farm’s biosecurity risks wherever possible, which has seen some farmers choose to extend their artificial breeding period to avoid bringing bulls on-farm for mating.”

Regenerative agriculture — a perspective Regenerative agriculture — horticulture, is based around sound science that acknowledges the importance of nitrogen but considers the forms of nitrogen used, for example, nitrate-nitrogen, which produces strong vegetative (leaf) growth responses. Ammonium-nitrogen, on the other hand, encourages strong reproductive (flowering) responses.

MCROBBIE DOWLING LTD

Before

After

So let’s have a look at vegetative growth (leaf production) from a regenerative perspective. We also recognise the importance of potassium chloride and calcium for leaf growth and this is where things get important in regards to what these minerals stimulate in a plant as it grows. Nitrogen, potassium and chloride actually stimulate auxin (new shoot tip growth and length), which leads to long internode spacings. These are your fruiting bud sites where yield comes from. The longer the internode length — the less yield you can potentially set with that crop. Whereas if you replace some of the above three (nitrogen-potassium and chloride) with calcium, which has a strong synergistic relationship with cytokinins (promote strong root growth and short internode spacings). For example, with auxin stimulated growth, the fruiting internodes maybe 150mm apart. Whereas cytokinin stimulated growth may 50mm apart — this factor alone means you have potentially tripled your yield. So what is high in cytokinins? Specific types of seaweeds contain very high levels, along with a massive range of other minerals (macro and micro) and vitamins and amino acids. So a regular application of seaweed along with calcium, nitrate-nitrogen, chloride and

few trace elements and chelating agents like citric acid, fulvic acid and seaweed and some form of microbial package. If calcium is managed correctly and applied in the correct form, for example, calcium-nitrate, gypsum (calcium sulphate), fine lime (calcium carbonate) it will give the grower an effect like nitrogen. Instead of soft long internode length, calcium creates that cytokinin growth response effect — short internode spacings and strong cell walls equals yield and storage.

potassium are crucial for vegetative (leaf) growth. Moreover, the critical point here is there is a combination of minerals vitamins and hormones involved in this process — not just one element like nitrogen. That is why Environmental Fertilisers developed a product called Bio-Rocket as our replacement for urea use as a solid fertiliser for vegetative growth. The three major minerals involved in this are manganese then phosphorus and finally ammonium-nitrogen. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

WHEELS

Built for the back country by Andy Bryenton

It’s been more than 100 years since a German inventor figured out that diesel fuel, when heated and compressed, could power an engine. Since then, diesel has become the benchmark for big machinery and tough jobs.

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

When it comes to the rural sector, diesel is the lifeblood of everything from telehandlers to loaders, to tractors and utes. Most serious farms keep a big tank of the stuff right near the equipment shed, and spare cans can be found in garages and barns across Northland. So it makes perfect sense that diesel is the fuel that powers the latest Polaris Ranger, a side-by-side that has been built primarily for work rather than play. That doesn’t mean that the new Ranger, with its 27-inch knobbly tyres, similar size of suspension travel and tough tubular roll cage can’t hit the trails for fun. It’s just that there are so many applications for a torquey, loadhauling two-seater side-by-side on the farm that it might well be put to work from dusk till dawn daily. To be fit for purpose, Polaris has given the new Ranger Diesel a 1,134-kilogram towing capacity and 720 kilograms of payload. With a redesigned rear tray affording more space, more tie-downs and more options for bringing materials and tools to the places you need them. It is all facilitated by a compact diesel engine, of course. By compact, we

certainly mean compact. Despite being powered by ‘tractor juice’ and delivering in excess of 24 horsepower, the little 898cc mill takes up less space than you’d imagine. It leaves room for 17 per cent more storage than on the previous model and more legroom as well. Couple this engine to Polaris’ well-refined allwheel-drive system and there’s not a lot that the Ranger Diesel won’t be able to slog through, even under load. They’ve even been thoughtful enough to

beef up the electrical charging system, knowing that winches, light bars and other electrical tools will likely be added on from the extensive range of Polaris upgrades in the catalogue. Best of all, the biggest hassle of diesel, remembering to buy road user charges, is not an issue. Just like your big tractor or other farm machinery, this Ranger is likely never to see a road. It will be too busy getting the job done with its big diesel ‘brothers’ out in the field.

Steam tractors at the Packard Motor Museum

62 CLYDE STREET

WE CAN

A visitor to the Packard Motor Museum will discover our ‘Steam Room’, so-called because in it we house four traction engines; the 1905 McLaren, the 1914 Garrett road tractor, the 1915 Burrell and the 1920 Fowler, and one steam locomotive — the 1873 Dubs. The traction engines range in weight between five and 12 tonnes and the invention of the steam engine changed history forever eventually replacing the draught horse both on the farm and for road haulage. Traction engines are a self-propelled steam engine designed to drive farm machinery such as a wheat thresher or chaff cutter. They were also used to haul equipment and goods from farm to farm. Traction engines burned coal but could burn wood and were built from 1850 through to the early 1930s. Steam traction engines have a firebox in front of the driver (who stands) at the rear of the machine. The heat from the firebox travels through tubes that run horizontally through the tractor’s large boiler transferring heat, boiling the water and converting it into steam. The smoke from these tubes goes into the smokebox at the front of the tractor then exits up the tractor’s chimney. The steam is transferred under pressure into the pistons on top of the boiler, which turns the flywheel to drive the tractor. Starting the tractor takes at least 20 minutes.

STAY AFLOAT

Traction engines were heavy and cumbersome to manoeuvre. So they tended to sit in a paddock and power farm machinery by running a continuous leather belt, driven off their large flywheel on the side of the engine. They could also be used in pairs to pull an implement such as a plough by a cable

from one side of the field to the other. Not many steam tractors came to Northland as the ground tended to be soft and not particularly suitable for these machines — but they are an interesting part of early New Zealand history.

Two kinds of voltage by Andy Bryenton

Two very different approaches to the future of motoring have been revealed in this past month, both of them electric, both of them harking back to an icon of pop culture, but both of them remarkably different in their design. The first is Tesla’s Cybertruck, an angular, stealth-bomber wedge made of stainless steel and able to deflect a sledgehammer. How do we know? Having a helper clad in Mad Max attire swing one at the truck’s door was part of Elon Musk’s big reveal for the vehicle. While his demo of its tempered glass did not go so smoothly, something about this 4x4 origami behemoth struck a chord, as pre-orders flooded in; 146,000 in the first two days. It could be because the angular, striking machine costs only US$50,000 for an all-wheel-drive variant that can whip a modern Porsche sports car in a drag race, then go on to haul a load up to 800 kilometres. There’s a hint that the design of the Cybertruck and even its name, are a nod to the seminal ‘cyberpunk’ movie Blade Runner, as it resembles the vehicles designed for that movie by artist Syd Mead. Tesla even revealed the truck on the day that the movie is meant to take place in November 2019.

Moreover, there is another new contender; very real, very modern, and looking back instead of forward for design and branding. Ford’s Mach-E Mustang has caused a stir, with traditional displacement-focussed V8 purists throwing up their hands at the idea of an electric Mustang crossover SUV. Stripped of the naysayers’ hype, it’s a pretty machine, as rounded and sleek as the Cybertruck is starkly angular. Hints of the current Mustang, the world’s best-selling sports car, after all, are there to see, and the combination of a possible 450-kilometre range alongside what Ford is calling ‘thrilling’ and ‘engaging’ driving characteristics mean that the Mach-E ticks a whole lot of boxes. Ecologically friendly, cheap to run, easy on the eye, packed with clever storage features and plenty of space; the icing on the cake is that it’s a Mustang.

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

mIND YOUr SPeeD ArOUND ScHOOL bUSeS

Ford’s Mach-E Mustang takes on vehicles like the Jaguar E-Pace, while Tesla’s new Cybertruck is in a niche of its own

Let’s be honest; it’s cooler already than many of the previous century’s Mustang variants, and the back catalogue of prototype pony cars had some weirder visions of the future than this. No doubt there will be big supercharged V8s in the lineup for

a while yet, but if that Cybertruck v Porsche battle is anything to go by, the Mach-E might give the petrol-powered Mustangs a run for their money. Pre-orders are once again very strong, with one popular variant of the Mach-E already sold out.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

by Andy Bryenton

Ask anyone who really knows automobiles, and they’ll tell you that the most important component is not the engine or the wheels, or even the gearbox that connects them. A well-sorted chassis is the underpinning of all the feel you’ll get back from the road, all the information that comes in via the steering wheel’s vibration and the seat of your pants. Get the chassis right, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a McLaren carbon-fibre tub or a Morgan’s stately beams of timber, it’ll pull the car together and give it a sense of completeness. That might be why the new Kia Seltos has achieved a lot of acclaim in a very short time. The company that surprised everyone with the powerful and sleek Stinger two years ago has done what so many have proven they could not; they’ve made a small SUV, which is both practical and fun. It’s been almost universally described as feeling responsive and planted on the road. Which brings us back to the concept of good bones, and what’s underneath the Seltos’ groovy two-tone paint and cheeky looks. The secret is in the super-tough advanced high strength steel that makes up the monocoque; the all-around cage and chassis, which cradles both the motor and, ultimately, the passengers. Ever felt that a convertible was a bit wobbly or bent like a banana in the

corners? That’s the lack of rigidity in the chassis caused by the absence of a roof. Now, imagine the opposite. That’s the effect of using this new material tech to create a light, yet firm and rigid skeleton for the Seltos. The effect is to create a machine that’s compact without being flighty and keeps tight to the road when the going gets interesting. In fact, ‘sharp, not soft’ is a term that could fit a lot of the features of this small SUV. The looks are pop culture

without being pop-eyed, the interior has a touch of design whimsy and a lot of practicality. The IVT transmission has been praised for being neither vague nor slushy, but smart and smooth. Also, it’s named for the son of Hercules. So there’s not only a good heroic image but also a nod and a wink to this little crossover following in the path of the famous Sportage, its ‘daddy’. Look at all you get on the EX model for under $40,000, and you’ll see that it’s a lot of machine for your money.
