The Local Government Commission’s preferred model for Northland is a single unitary body supported by community boards. Its decision does not ultimately rule out the use of local boards as allowed for under new legislation introduced to Parliament recently. The commission became involved after an application during the previous term of the Far North District Council for a unitary. Since that application was filed the region’s political landscape has changed markedly, with new mayors in both the Far North, John Carter, and Whangarei Districts, Sheryl Mai, and a new chairman for the Northland Regional Council in Bill Shepherd. All three political leaders — and chair of commissioners for the Kaipara District Council, John Robertson have, together with senior management across all four councils, agreed to form a working party to collectively examine the implications of the LGC proposal. The four say while their individual councils will still now need to meet to look at the implications for them and their ratepayers, collectively

they are pleased the commission’s recommendation ends months of uncertainty. The challenge now is to work to ensure Northlanders collectively are educated to the pros and cons of the option as outlined by the commission and empowered to make the decisions they feel are best for them. While it is still early days, they say there are also a number of opportunities to work more closely and productively under the current local government arrangements in the region. Submissions to the LGC plan close in February.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES December 2013
by Paul Campbell
Latest flood maps released
3
Kerikeri/Waipapa and Whangarei have become the latest parts of Northland to be issued with new maps showing the likely effect a ‘one in a century’ flood would have. The maps form part of the Northland Regional Council’s Priority Rivers Programme, which focusses on reducing flood risks in 26 Northland catchments at highest threat, including 17 in the Far North.
Waipapa outlining the latest flood risk to their properties and directing them to the new maps. The new maps will progressively replace previous hazard maps based on soil types and topographical features indicating they had suffered heavy flooding in the past.
They would also complement a range of other extensive work the regional council had planned in both areas to reduce flood risk. These included an $8M flood detention dam in Whangarei due to start next year and a yet-to-be-finalised $2M-plus flood diversion spillway in Kerikeri, expected to start in 2015.
The council has already released flood maps for 22 catchments over the past year — including Kaeo and Waitangi last month — to raise awareness of where flood hazard areas are and help inform public and district council decision-making. Rivers programme manager, Joseph Camuso, says the Kerikeri/Waipapa and Whangarei catchments had been among the more difficult to model regionally due to factors including their shape and topography, the flood paths within them and the need for more detailed data. Mr Camuso says the Kerikeri/Waipapa catchment had been modelled at a cost of about $200,000 and Whangarei $150,000. The models forecast the predicted impacts of a ‘100-year flood’ and take into account the latest central government climate change projections on storm rainfall intensity and sea level rise. Mr Camuso says there’s a one percent probability of a flood of this scale — this occurring in any given year. However,
throughout New Zealand most authorities only have useable, scientifically valid data stretching back 30 to 50 years which can affect the accuracy of predicting extreme events. “Our new Kerikeri/Waipapa and Whangarei maps are based on the latest available storm data from NIWA. He says as with other parts of Northland, residents in both catchments are already familiar with heavy rainfall events and how these affect properties in their respective areas. The council is writing to the owners of about 1,700 affected Whangarei properties and roughly 1,100 in Kerikeri/

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
BRIDGES OVER MORE THAN TROUBLED WATERS by Colin Patterson
If you’re a farmer, it’s more than likely you’ve a stream on your property. And if you’ve got a stream you’ll probably have a bridge. You may also have fords and other crossings where you’ve thought about getting a bridge but dismissed the idea as too difficult or expensive.
B
ut times have changed. Health and safety, planning and environmental rules are now all very strict. From December 1 Fonterra and regional council rules mean farmers

are no longer permitted to move stock through water courses. So, if you’ve kept putting off installing bridges along stock routes, it is now time to act. Kelly Wright and his colleague Steve Swann have been talking to farmers and landowners the length and breadth of Northland. Kelly was a farmer himself and knows the issues farmers encounter every day. Steve is a builder and engineer who knows how to turn ideas into reality. Kelly and Steve have listened. They’ve heard that farmers want bridges that are robust and strong. But they

Clearwater Crossings can be quickly installed by the Clearwater team who can also take care of any consent issues
Bridges constructed by Clearwater crossings provide safe, strong and environmentally friendly crossings on farms
a lot of farmers realise, even culverts require a land-use consent from the council. CCL take out the regulatory hurdles. Within the Whangarei District they can offer clients a fixed-price and turn-around for land-use consent applications. That means peace of mind and less stress. And if you are thinking bridge installation is a messy time-consuming process, think again. For most jobs, the CCL team can have a crossing up within 14 days.
Clearwater crossings come in varying lengths and widths — depending on your needs. “We currently have spans from 3 to 12.5 metres at the water line” Steve says. Clearwater Crossings improve access, and because they don’t impact on the stream bed, they’re good for the environment. Steve says they are much better than culverts which cause a lot of damage to streams. Find out how they can help you, too.

Grant’s grandmother’s people, the Northern Irish Geddes family, sailed up the Whangape harbour around 130 years ago. They married into local families and settled to farming. Grant would come out to Herekino from Kaitaia when he was a boy. It was a place he’d always been drawn to. Later he bought 20 acres off a local older Grant’s horsemanship skills farmer who liked his grew from necessary self-sufficiency enthusiasm. Grant and wife Tangi (Te Aupouri) buildings followed — a backpackers’ would camp while he fenced the block cottage, a cabin for groups — now the into paddocks and with help put in the Tui Inn — and the museum building with access road. After redundancy from its attached accommodation, and the Post and Telegraph, Grant thought of family home and sleep-out. “Tangi has farm stays and shifted an ex-forestry made me sign an affidavit that I won’t do house onto the land for guests. Appeal still on – please donate! Northlanders can now officially celebrate the 25th anniversary of their life-saving Electricity Rescue Helicopter Service. November 15 marked the anniversary of the first flight back in 1988 and November 17 signified the first life-saving mission 25 years ago – that of Kaitaia motherof-three Lynda Tracey, who would have died without the chopper. She recently featured on TVNZ news: http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/ northland-rescue-helicopter-serviceturns-25-video-5712713
The horses at Herekino fulfil the same roles as animals in colonial times — transportation on four legs beats 4x4 wheels!
“Nothing was here,” he says of the start of work on his block, now a few decades ago. A bulldozer had to be brought in to make gentler ground for the orchard and the vegetable plots built up on underlying clay. A plastic house extends the range of home vegetables. The many resident blackbirds fight over prolific grape vines — perhaps the Dalmatian grape growers here in the early 1900s knew land that would crop well! The block grazes a small flock of Romney Cross and South Suffolk sheep and around 20 Hereford Friesian cattle. As well, Grant raises pig weaners, collecting scraps for them every week from Kaitaia. He manages horse shoeing on the same trip and runs a yearly shoeing school with participants staying at the farm. In winter Grant goes hunting. Wild pigs are either for the table or for barter. The farm’s working dogs also hunt pigs. “They find and hold without mauling the animal about,” explains Grant. The largest, Tim, is an Irish Setter — Rottweiler Cross. The young English Sheepdog Cross Snoopy was found abandoned and will become a working dog. With backpacker numbers growing and Grant’s longstanding interest in horses trekking has become an important part of life and livelihood. “I
Relics of the past evoke olden times at Grant’s family museum — a tribute to those who first settled Herekino
Grant also uses the horses to go diving and fishing in the harbour or the beach. He has ten horses and breeds a foal a year from his son-inlaw’s stallion, selected because of its calm temperament.

The Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter Service is the busiest air ambulance service in New Zealand and the only one that flies 24 hours/seven days a week. It is a charitable service so needs public donations to keep saving lives because it is becoming busier by the day. Our 2013 ‘Year25 Appeal’ is still on, so please give what you can and encourage your friends, family and work colleagues to do so. As so many people say, you never know when you might need it. The Year25 Appeal has been kindly supported by Classic Hits, More FM, former All Black Grant Fox, TVNZ reporter Helen Castles, TNVZ news anchor Simon Dallow and many Northlanders who have been saved by the service. In its first year of operation it transported more than 200 patients. In the last month alone, it has flown more than half that number. On average, it is flying at least two patients every day. That’s how much Northlanders – and tourists to the region, particularly over the summer holiday period – need this service. Top Energy, the other principal sponsor of Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopters, is also pleased to acknowledge the achievement, says CEO Russell Shaw.
Or see us to strengthen and repair your existing bridge to ensure safe access on your property.

Hans and Chris Roecoert says alpacas make wonderful companion pets but are also an excellent business investment via tourism, fleece and breeding
“I looked into its eyes and I knew I was hooked. I went home, learned how to Google, did the homework, went to Australia and imported my first alpacas.” The rest of the love story as they say is history, but it is definitely on-going. Originally a chef for 34 years and then a farmer, Hans and his wife Chris imported about 30 or so alpacas onto their Waitakere property at West Auckland in the late 90s. He says after developing the concept, they moved to the current site at Monk Road, north of Helensville on the beautiful Kaipara Harbour in 2007. “We spent the first year organising paddocks and fences. Alpacas don’t need much in the way of fencing and are better in smaller paddocks, but once that was done we were away.” The place is a mix of tourism, farming, and export industry as it caters for all three and even has a special MAF approved quarantine facility for the import/export side of the business.

From their pedigree stock of around 240 animals, Hans and Chris are exporting prize animals to Germany, Holland, Belgium, Taiwan and Asia as well as supplying domestic demand. Hans says the whole farming thing is easier as alpacas don’t eat as much as cows. “We have a few cattle on the property, as they will clean up the pasture areas, but alpacas need smaller paddocks and they are not inclined to challenge fences. We keep some comfrey growing for natural food balance and we also run a worm farm but other than that, the alpacas look after themselves.”

Incas for their fine fleece which provided them with clothing, food, and companionship.” Large numbers of alpacas still exist in South America, despite a decline after the conquest of the Incas. Their survival is due in part to their ability to tolerate harsh conditions. The alpaca industry in New Zealand is vibrant and growing as Hans says we have ideal conditions to nurture these wonderful animals. Alpacas offer a strong return on investment, and are sought after around the world, and the demand has never been greater, and that according to Hans, is why the alpaca is the world’s finest livestock investment.
Hans and Chris Roecoert of Waitakere Alpacas on their tourism and agribusiness property north of Helensville — surrounded by their ’babies’
So amidst this idyllic lifestyle, Hans says they run a successful mix of agribusiness with a variety of tourism activities at the core. “We do group bookings and this includes a couple of hours or more of fun and learning. We have a shop with goods made from alpaca fibre and related products, and we also have a Bed and Breakfast Farmstay.” On the other side, Hans will also provide advice for those thinking of setting up an alpaca farm and of course can also supply prime stock at special prices.
“They are easy to farm. With basic animal husbandry skills, they are ideal for a lifestyle block or small farm. We have more than 200 alpacas, many of which are for sale and they represent top blood lines from Australia and Peru.” As for the animals themselves? They are very loveable, funny, intelligent, extremely curious and just make the best pets according to Hans and Chris. “Alpacas belong to the Camelidae family and were treasured by the ancient

GRAHAM DAY Lawyer Graham is our expert on relationship property issues (separations and contracting out). Call him today!
In the preceding two articles I mentioned two important changes to Trust Law. I noted that the Courts will potentially have further powers to declare Trusts invalid and also they will have the power to remove property from Trusts. How can you protect yourself and the Trust? There are two ways: alter the Trust documents (if necessary), and consider whether a contracting out agreement (“pre-nup”) needs to be entered into. If you have created a Trust and you are concerned at all (for example, perhaps you now think you have too much control of the assets), you should discuss this with an independent advisor and consider whether or not alternations need to be made to your trust documents. It would be very difficult for a Court to declare that no Trust exists if a trustee had taken independent advice and made changes to the Trust structure as a result of that advice. In terms of the taking of Trust assets at the time of separation, the simple thing to do to ensure the trust is not unwound in this way would be to enter into a contracting out agreement (often called a “pre-nup”) which states the property in the Trust (or going into Trust) was separate property when it was put into the Trust. The Court has no ability to take the assets if what has been put into Trust is separate property (as opposed to joint property). As I indicated at the start of this series of articles, the laws are at this stage simply recommendations that may or may not be accepted by the Government. With an election looming it may be that change is rejected by the current Government, but may well be implemented later. When you go through the process of structuring your affairs for your farm and are considering making gifts and other payments to family members, it would be wise to bear the changes in mind and check with your advisor to see if there is anything more you should do.
Pulling away back pain Inversion New Zealand was started nearly six years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from degenerated discs, and had basically given up and decided to ‘just live with it’. “To me surgery was never an option,” he says. “As long as I could still walk, there was hope. I tried everything. every time I was overseas I would search for anything to help me.” While on one of these overseas trip seven years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared, and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes. Nothing had done that before,” he says. Dave never believed that the system would fix him — too many specialists had told him that the disease was irreversible. But he now knew that he had a place to go every time he wanted some relief. To Dave’s surprise, the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free. “I couldn’t believe it,” he says. “I had spent around $15,000 in ten years on every form of treatment available, and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.” It was then that Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and
Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get relief from their pain and have seen results in not only backs, but hips, knees, necks, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. “We have received testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems, and even have equipment in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children,” he says, “The increased blood-flow to the brain helps these kids, and the results are excellent.” INZ now have a division putting them into workplaces, as back pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production. Additionally, both Dave and Nancy will be attending field days and A and P shows around the country, including right here. “This year we have increased the size of the stand, so we can treat more people,” Dave says. He realises that had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering. “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain — that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves, we let the tables do the talking.”
BACK or NECK PAIN? If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain then come along to our stand at the Kaikohe A&P Show on the 11th January, the Ngapuhi Festival on the 28th and 29th January or the North Kaipara A&P Show on the 1st February. In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. After nearly six years in NZ there are now enough people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts that these really do work if you suffer from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want to age healthily, bring this ad along for a free 10 minute treatment. “I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised!”

At Purewater Products we believe it’s essential to know you’re drinking to good health! Many people who drink water that is from a rural supply are not aware of the risks to their health associated with drinking nonfiltered water. With many years’ experience in advising our customers on rural water filtration, we can confidently solve any water problems. This may involve a whole house system or filtration for the farm water supply. For customers on rainwater, the risks are Giardia and Cryptosporidium, as well as Bacteria including E. coli. These are all a threat to human health and can cause illness. If your home utilises rainwater, we recommend a filtration system to remove dirt and sediment, as well as keeping the water free from Giardia and Cryptosporidium. For customers with issues around bacterial growth (this is particularly a problem for rainwater which is stored in tanks), the best solution is Ultraviolet Sterilisation.

For those living rurally on a bore water supply, Purewater Products’ owner Derek Fleet says before he can recommend any filtration solution, we first need to test the bore water. “Bore water can taste great, but can also be high in iron, manganese and nitrates. We test for these as they may be harmful to your health. In addition, pH may need balancing (blue/green staining) or addressing problems with water hardness,” Derek says. The problem with bore water, as well as being a health concern, is that it can cause staining of your household white ware and corrosion to taps and water pipes. “There are many ways to treat bore water successfully and it is important for us to understand your water. We have had remarkable results with water of exceptionally poor quality,” said Derek. Spring and stream water used by rural properties also requires filtration. Purewater Products is able to provide advice on any rural water supply and we can freight goods nationwide. So, is your water safe for drinking? Safer water drives local tourism by Andy Bryenton
Water for drinking, water for livestock, water for irrigation — all of these things are vital for the success of the agricultural sector in the north. But there’s another use for water which it’s hard to overlook — water is a big attraction for tourists, who come to enjoy the summer heat at our beaches, lakes and rivers. John Ballinger, the Northland Regional Council’s Environmental Monitoring Programme Manager, says this year’s programme of testing for bacterial levels at popular swimming spots gets underway on Monday November 25, and will run until the last week of March. He says hundreds of samples will be taken from 47 coastal and 12 freshwater sites across the region to check bacterial levels at the Northland
beaches, lakes and rivers most often used for swimming, water sports and similar forms of recreation. A website has been set up to monitor the suitability of various ‘hot spots’ for swimming, with an alert level much like the ubiquitous fire danger arrow. Results will be posted online every Friday at www.nrc.govt.nz/swimming. Mr Ballinger says that reassuringly for swimmers, most of the popular spots the regional council monitors are usually safe, although Northland’s high rainfall and hilly terrain meant many could be temporarily contaminated by run-off from the land for several days after heavy rain.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be
operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
Take five minutes today to plan for summer Soils continue to dry out around the region, with some areas drier than this time last year. Do you have enough resilience in your farm system to get through a prolonged dry period? Take five minutes out to answer the following:
• Which stock could I tighten up for feed, if needed?
• Am I regularly monitoring pastures and stock condition and weight?
• What other feed sources could I have on hand, to fill a feed deficit (ie pasture silage, maize silage, hay or PKE)?
• Which stock can I sell at short notice?
• Is feeding grain an option? (Be aware that stock generally need to be trained to eat grain, so its introduction needs to be early on and managed). • Is there sufficient dew or precipitation coming that I could consider applying nitrogen now? • Do I have options to graze stock off farm? • Do I have adequate water sources available?
Is your water safe to drink? If you collect your drinking water from rain off the roof, a spring, a stream, a bore or lake and people in your household are feeling off colour, your water could be contaminated. For $34 we can test a sample of your drinking water for E. Coli – bacteria that live in the gut of animals – and email a report to you within 24 hours This test will show whether your water is safe, or if more investigation is needed. We can also test your water for chemicals.
The best way to minimise the effect of drought is to make decisions early and set yourself deadlines to make those decisions by. Visit www.pasturegrowthforecaster. co.nz to get regular forecasted pasture growth rates for your area.

by Steve Reynolds – Aqua Filter
Did you run out of water last year? Or is that just a distant painful memory? So far this spring we have seen a large increase in people getting prepared, putting in myriad rain harvesting solutions to prevent sediment getting inside the water tank itself. Its also fair to say we have had a noticeable increase of people sick from drinking their tank water. Giardia is prevalent at the moment and also E. coli and coliform bacteria causing sickness, vomiting and diarrhea.
small stainless steel screening filter onto the one-way valve. For added protection, attach a float to the outlet pipe so there is less opportunity to suck sludge off the tank floor. Next, fit a filter (10–20 micron) in line with the flow coming from the pump. You could also add a carbon filter to reduce potential spray residues from your roof and the chlorine taste that comes with town-supply. There are two choices to treat the whole house at this point. The first is an ultrafiltration membrane filter fitted after the other filters and pump. (These physically remove up to 99.9999% of E. coli).
Here’s what I’ve learned about lessening the chance of illness from the host of dreaded lurgies that flourish inside the water tank over summer months. Water tanks should be cleaned out every one to two years. Tank bottom sediment provides the perfect breeding ground for E. coli, in its many forms. The first line of defense starts outside your water tank. There are leaf screens, rain heads, first flush diverters and a new product called a contaminated water diverter (which is the
best thing I have personally seen) which will filter/remove sediment from the water getting into your tank. Second line of defence is inside your tank. If there is not one attached, install a
The other alternative is UV light, which is very effective in neutralising the bugs and microbes. The same technology can be installed in the kitchen under the sink if you prefer to only filter one tap in the house — the minimum safe requirement.

Old-fashioned septic tank systems may suffer over the summer months from a variety of problems — not the least of which has been highlighted by the extreme dry conditions and the influx of holidaymakers to the north. Underground, the variance between the damp of winter and the soil-cracking dry of last summer’s drought may have caused unwanted effects, with the danger of a structural cave-in threatening old or poorly maintained septic tanks. This effect may be exacerbated by the common (though not recommended) practice of running ‘grey water’ — the home’s shower, bath and laundry water — through a system originally designed only for sewerage. It’s estimated that over 35 per cent of waste in Northland is treated using septic tank systems, and the outflow from these systems — if they are malfunctioning — can prove hazardous to human health, with knock-on effects including the pollution of waterways and even shellfish beds. With an influx of visitors enjoying the summer weather, septic systems take a pounding this time of year. The key to helping out your septic system is monitoring — in the first instance this should be done when the tank is cleaned out, a process recommended to be undertaken every three to five years. As the core of your septic system’s ability to process hazardous waste into

Fresh start a lot to torque about by our motoring correspondent
Over the years many novice riders have had their first taste of off road thrills thanks to Honda’s range of small MX-style bikes — the XR series, along with the popular CRF 80 and 100. It’s no surprise that the maker of these tough and versatile little machines didn’t want to tinker too much with a winning formula, and so with minor stylistic changes the recipe has remained evergreen for many years; a reliable, kick-started air-cooled motor wedded to a chassis able to take the off road knocks, and a suspension setup with plenty of travel to iron out the bumps and jumps. But times change, and Honda has changed with them, leapfrogging its competitors with the arrival of a new machine to add some wow factor to the novice off-road experience. And, for the era of push-button everything, the addition of an electric starter to the new CRF125 makes this new machine as easy
to access as or Playstation.

Xbox
The difference here is that the thrills are not vicarious or virtual. The CRF125 boasts a torquey little 125cc, air cooled single-pot four stroke motor, with enough grunt to push young riders and sharpen their abilities while still building confidence. It’s nowhere near as challenging as a similar sized two stroke, with a more gentle delivery of power. Honda have also opted to beef up the bike’s suspension, braking and forks for better handling and safety, while the all important styling of the CRF125 mimics the sharp lines of top MX and Freestyle machines, tapping into the global phenomenon of events such as the X-games and the TV popularity

of young stunt-riding superstars. So here we have the next generation bike for the next generation of riders — a competent and safe machine when seen from the point of view of Mum and Dad, with excellent safety features and a less aggressive choice than the old 2-stroke options of yesteryear.
But from the point of view of a young rider, growing in to off road motorcycling, this is a sharp, thrilling big red slice of awesome — a stepping stone toward the more powerful 250cc and 400cc bikes in the Honda range. And just about the best Christmas present anyone could ask for!

Vital link between land and sea The warmer weather is finally upon us meaning marine enthusiasts country-wide will be looking to launch their boats, catch a few fish and rev up the barbecue. There is however, one essential piece of equipment needed by land-based vehicles to launch water-based ones — the humble trailer.
been in the business of providing trailers for six years and their staff members boast a wealth of industry experience, which is just as well considering the annual rush for a trailer coincides with the Christmas season. Managing director Brent Morris says:
Yes, the boat trailer is the unsung hero of the marine lifestyle, but vital nonetheless. Xpress Trailers, based in Silverdale, have
“We’re entering into our busy period of the year now, Christmas is just around the corner and when the weather gets better, everyone just wants to get the boat in the water. Luckily we have a wide range of boat trailers in stock from 10ft to 30ft, and we pride ourselves on offering these robust trailers at an affordable price.”

Boat trailers are available in either single axle or tandem axle with a range of wobblers, rollers or bunks. When safeguarding a major investment such as a boat, a strong trailer is a must, hence the extra use of steel in the construction of Xpress Trailers’ range. Morris explains: The affordability of the Xpress range is due largely in part to importing from quality suppliers. The supply chain means the trailers can be sourced cheaper in other countries and savings are then passed onto the customers.

“There is a preconception that trailers are expensive to purchase brand new. We invite anyone to come and look at our range of trailers and see what they think.” Trailers have to be well constructed considering their laborious job carrying heavy loads at the rear of our vehicles. Xpress Trailers consider their offerings to be as strong as the competition, if not stronger. Morris explains.
Capturing thrills for a lifetime Yamaha’s range of fun bikes have proven understandably popular with their target audience over the years. They combine thrills and speed for young novice riders with the kind of safety features which keep their Mums and Dads from fretting — and they manage this with raceproven technology. Whether on two wheels or four, the Yamaha range has steadily kept up with the latest offroad engineering forged in the MX arena. This year’s crop of blue and white machines are a prime example of why their popularity remains evergreen. But there’s one accessory which Yamaha are offering this year which has not been seen before on its fun bike range. It’s something a little out of the ordinary too — not a new kind of brakes, a sportier exhaust system or a gel-padded seat, but a camera. Think about the sheer popularity of sites like YouTube, and this suddenly makes perfect sense. From the classic PW50 (the bike which has launched many an MX career), to the bigger, more powerful TT-R125, there are going to be moments which riders want to show the world. Everything
from the first start of the engine to the first lap of the paddock — then all the way up to recording mud-slinging tight turns, big air and memorable victories for posterity. Yamaha dealers are giving away free waterproof high-def action cameras, complete with mounting kits, with every fun bike sold this holiday season. With easy tools to rip your video files from the HD cam to your computer, there’s never been an easier way to share with relatives, friends and the world your adventures out there riding trails and enjoying the outdoors. After all, there’s plenty of great scenery to show off here in New Zealand, and a Yamaha fun bike or quad is a great way to get amongst it.

Sporty new look for a serious contender ROAD SAFETY by Andy Bryenton
The terms ‘Great Wall’ and ‘value for money’ have been seen next to each other in the automotive sections of newspapers and magazines around the world for several years now. So it’s no surprise to learn that the new V-series dual cab ute from the Chinese manufacturer represents a savvy investment, especially for those who want a no-nonsense work vehicle. But to simply focus on the price of the V240 is to do something of a disservice to this new offering from Great Wall, who are making a concerted effort to win over New Zealand and Australian buyers by improving the styling, features and quality of their fleet. It’s a strategy which the now well-established Japanese automakers went through in the 1970s and 80s, but one which has been compressed into a shorter timeframe by Great Wall. Beginning with the outer skin, there have been big cosmetic changes to make the new Great Wall ute look better than ever. The V240 double cab Sports edition gains the same kind of trim you’d expect to see on a much pricier vehicle — alloy sports bar, running boards, 20" rims — along with a profile which (by no accident) recalls the popular Holden Colorado or Isuzu D-Max. Certainly still

the look of a tough work-horse rather than a chrome-laden show pony, but that’s all to the good considering the hard-working market which Great Wall utes appeal to. Inside, the spartan approach has also been rolled away, with leather trim, air conditioning and all the buttons and dials you would expect to see on the latest Ford, Holden or Toyota. A threeyear warranty, backed up by three years of roadside assistance are also a clear sign that Great Wall take their build quality seriously. The 2.4L petrol engine of the V240 may not set the world on fire

with sheer power, but it’s a gutsy and willing powerplant, mated to a triedand-true manual box, forgoing all of the high-spec dual clutch, semi-sequential or CVT tech which comes loaded as standard on many new vehicles. Here, under the hood, is a glimpse of the of the Great Wall philosophy which has seen the brand grow into a trusted name. Build it simple, build it tough, and keep the customer happy with good fundamentals. Adding a little luxury and a fresh look to this basic recipe has only made the allure of Great Wall sweeter, and the V240 Double Cab Sports may be the ‘crossover’ point which sees this growing brand become truly mainstream.

There are many full planting schemes surrounding New Zealand waterways to prevent effluent pollution — a good example being a large scale campaign supported by community groups, schools and other organisations around the huge expanse of the Kaipara Harbour — to act as a safe barrier against effluent run-off. Full planting involves re-establishing grasses, shrubs and trees in a fenced strip alongside the waterway. Both exotic and native species can be used. Typically a strip at least five metres wide is required and the resulting revegetation provides benefits beyond those offered by simple fencing and low planting. It can offer shade and shelter for stock along paddock edges which is beneficial for stock health. Depending on the extent of waterways on a given farm, riparian planting could be a long-term project. A waterway margin can be divided into three zones — a wet zone for lowgrowing plants that tolerate wet or flood conditions. They also lie flat in a flood event and will not restrict water flow.
POND LINERS
Effluent Ponds Water Storage Ponds
Frost Protection Ponds

The trees and shrubs zone should be on higher ground and will eventually provide shade and cover while a pasture zone is a grassy area about a metre wide between the plants and the actual farm boundary fencing. Replanting requires five to 10 metres of waterway margin. Local biodiversity gains the most where waterway margins link existing pieces of bush and wetlands. Important steps prior to planting include weed and pest control while shade keeps water temperatures down for stream life and vitality.

Focus on Effluent Power from farm effluent?
GLOBAL PUMP SOLUTIONS
According to NIWA ‘It’s not rocket science’ to generate electricity from the waste that comes out of the cow shed. Spokesman Rupert Craggs says he and a few others have demonstrated how easy it is to produce electricity from the biogas that comes off farm effluent ponds, using a converted generator. “We plugged in two fan heaters, three spotlights and a 3-phase motor — and they ran for over two hours. At full throttle it generates 13kW — we were running it at nine or ten. Most large domestic wastewater treatment plants capture biogas. For example, they do it here in Hamilton, in Auckland and Christchurch. There are also farm-based technologies but these have not been cost effective. What we’re trying to show is that farmers can do it themselves. It’s that whole ‘number 8 wire’ thinking. “We’re focussing on using simple pond-based digestion technology and off-the-shelf equipment — that anyone with a small amount of mechanical skill can convert to run on biogas.” Niwa has spent several years looking at the possibilities of biogas coming off treatment ponds, looking at how quality and quantity vary with season. The biogas contains 70 to 80 per cent methane, which is strong enough to be used in a generator.

to be kept clean and sharp. We get a lot of knives of varying quality sent to us from all over New Zealand to be sharpened. The main thing that determines quality is the hardness of the steel used. The harder the steel the longer it will stay sharp. Most knives are made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is relatively hard and

therefore will keep its edge reasonably well. However, some of the cheaper stainless steel knives are very soft and will go blunt quite quickly. Often farmers will buy these cheaper knives because they tend to be used for many things other than hoof trimming and it becomes quite expensive if you have to keep replacing them. The better quality hoof knives are made of hardened steel. These knives will stay sharper for much longer than stainless steel knives, but they will rust if they are not kept dry. Because they are so hard they can break easier than stainless steel knives so it is important to use the right trimming technique. The horny tissue needs to be sliced off not broken off. What I mean by this is that many people tend to start a cut and then part way through twist the knife so as to cause the hoof to break off rather than making the slice clean. Generally people are not even aware that this is what they are doing, but it is something I encounter frequently when running training courses. When we trim cows it is important that our knives are sharp. We wouldn’t like it if a surgeon performed an operation on us using blunt knives. Not so much because it is harder work for the surgeon but more because the end result is not the same.
This is the same for cows. If we use blunt knives we are more likely to cut ourselves and the trimming job is not going to be very successful. By using sharp knives you can be much more precise with less effort. Sharpening knives is, however, not the easiest thing to do. It takes a lot of practice and patience. We use a bench grinder with a linishing belt. This will sharpen the blade and create a nice bevel. The angle that you put the knife onto the belt will determine the angle of the bevel. As a rule of thumb, this bevel needs to be a minimum of 10mm. Many of the knives you can buy have a much steeper bevel than that which makes the knife much more difficult to use, giving you less control with your cutting. We sharpen the hook of the knife on a rubber disc attachment on our grinder. You can sharpen the hook on the outside if you wish, but you should NEVER sharpen the back of the blade. If you do, you end up having to tilt the knife when trimming and it is much more likely to cut into the hoof rather than taking a slice off. I know it is very tempting to touch up that side of the knife because it is easier to get a sharp edge but you will ruin the functionality of the knife. (to be continued…!)

Rural transport laws change Rural contractors are being urged to get themselves up-todate with changes to transport regulations around the use of agricultural machinery. A number of new rules came in from November 11. “However, not all the proposed changes will be in place until late 2014,” explains Rural Contractors NZ president Steve Levet. “It can be quite confusing at the moment with some of the old regulations still applying; so there is mix of old and new at present. Therefore it is important rural contractors — and farmers — familiarise themselves with the changes.” One of the more important changes, which is now in force, relates to how tractors are registered. A two-tier system for agricultural vehicles has been established based on a 40km/h operating speed. Vehicles operating below this speed will have no compliance other than they must be roadworthy. “Tractor owners have to decide if they want to register their tractors as being able to travel over 40km/h on public roads or not,” Mr Levet explains. “If you opt for the former, then in effect your vehicle has to comply with rules and regulations which apply to other road legal vehicles and require the new simplified annual warrant of fitness for tractors.” Previously some heavier tractors needed to have a certificate of fitness, whereas now they just need a simplified warrant of fitness tailored for tractors. Meanwhile the new
licence endorsement now allows for a greater range of agricultural vehicles to be driven by the holder of a Class 1 (car) licence once they prove they have the skills to do so. “Drivers will need a wheels endorsement on their driver’s licence if driving a tractor over 40km/h or any other powered agricultural vehicle under 40km/h,” Mr Levet says Other changes have improved and simplified the rules on pilot vehicles, work time variation schemes, hazard identification and vehicle visibility. Agricultural motor vehicles — regardless of age — that operate at speeds exceeding 40km/h will now undergo an annual WoF inspection, rather than six monthly. Mr Levet says that despite some confusion, rural contractors welcome the changes and the thinking behind them. He says the greater flexibility around work hours is particularly welcome. “Contractors and farmers will no longer face the situation of a contractor having to stop work because they have exceeded their work hours for the day, when perhaps the job could be completed in another hour. “The contractor will no longer have to come back the next day or the next day when the weather is suitable.” Mr Levet advises any contractors who are unsure of the changes, or which regulations have been changed and which have yet to change, to contact Rural Contractors NZ or go to its website: www. ruralcontractors.org.nz.
Drought proof your land With summer fast approaching (or has it been here for over a month?), now is the time to start preparing your land for another potential drought. Firstly, don’t graze pasture down too low. When pasture is grazed low, the plant takes energy reserves from its roots to grow leaf and the roots die back. If more leaf is left on the plant to photosynthesise, the plant is able to make the energy from the sunlight faster and has no need to take energy from the roots, so the plant grows faster. Longer pasture also protects the soil from sun through shading and prevents it drying out too much. Research by Louis Schipper et al. 20071, have found that synthetic nitrogen fertilisers are detrimental to soils and have led to a decrease in soil carbon levels. Soils low in carbon cannot store as much water, nitrogen or microbial life, creating drought-proneness and poor productivity. We know that nitrogen inputs are important in crop and pasture production, however, we suggest that nitrogen inputs be managed much more carefully and recommend they be applied with humates to restore soil carbon. Applications of humates will not only increase soil carbon levels, but also improve soil water
retention, drainage, soil structure and nutrient retention. EF Humus Builder is another way to increase humus levels in soils. It works by increasing leaf area and hence photosynthesis, which increases root turnover — hence builds humus in the soil. Humus Builder attracts moisture from the atmosphere above the sprayed area via electromagnetic attraction, even during a drought. The following pictures show untreated pasture (left) and pasture 12 weeks after receiving eight sprays costing $120/ha (right). These pictures were taken in February from adjacent paddocks during the 2010 drought. Did you know: • Humus can hold four times its weight in water — so a soil rich in humus is more drought resistant • Humus holds minerals in the soil preventing them from being leached 1. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
LIVESTOCK
One small step in the right direction by Peter Burton
The lead article in The Press on October 22 was headed Nitrate Risk to Infant Health, with a warning from Canterbury District Health Board medical officer Alistair Humphrey that, ‘a baby could die if nitrate levels are not more tightly controlled’. The term ‘ticking time bomb’ occurred three times in the article and although it was stated that the steady increase of nitrate in groundwater levels in the Canterbury region was not solely the result of farming, there is little doubt that the increased use of nitrogen
fertiliser is seen as the main culprit by most people. Reducing the loss of nitrate nitrogen into groundwater is a necessity and pressure will continue to mount until steps are taken — it’s just a matter of how long it will take before fundamental

changes are made. It was not until 1995 that farmers in New Zealand began embracing the regular applications of nitrogen fertiliser, primarily urea from Kapuni, first manufactured in 1983 to use surplus energy from the Maui gas field. The 10-year time frame between the introduction and regular widespread use of urea is a not unusual period for the uptake of any new product in a market place dominated by traditional and conservative thinking. A significant amount of research had already been by undertaken by AgResearch on the use of urea for the production of out of season pasture growth, however no trial work was available for its long-term use, so the consequences of present practices are unknown, but becoming more evident every day. Nitrogen fertiliser is expensive and although the cost may be put in the supplementary feed budget it is a real expense and with more pasture requiring replacement each year the profit generated from pasture is continuously being squeezed. Although pests, dry weather, and new cultivars are often blamed for the lack of persistence of ‘permanent’ pastures the real problem nearly always lies with the physical structure of the soil. Soils that have become compacted do not allow plant roots to penetrate more than a few centimetres and these areas are most affected by summer dry and pulling in autumn. Rather than attempt a radical
rethink of farming systems there is a small and inexpensive step that can be taken that will significantly reform every aspect of a farm’s operation. The application of Golden Bay Dolomite rapidly improves physical soil structures. Tight compacted soils become more friable allowing plant roots to penetrate to a greater depth. With more root mass plants have access to greater quantities of both moisture and nutrient. More nitrogen is able to be intercepted before reaching groundwater allowing for a reduction in both the frequency and rate of applications. Pastures that are already earmarked for replacement this autumn may only require renovation — however the most obvious effect is the improvement in every aspect of animal health and performance. Animals on properties where dolomite is applied annually at 200–250kg/ ha suffer fewer metabolic disorders in spring, have a lower incidence of mastitis and are more likely to hold to the first insemination. Dolomite can be applied at any time and each tonne of dolomite reduces the liming requirement by a similar amount. Dolomite from Golden Bay is one of those rare natural resources that have a wide range of benefits impacting positively on every aspect of intensive pastoral farming. Independent contract milkers Dairy farmers employing contract milkers and having proceeds paid directly to the contract milker through their dairy companies, could find that their contract milkers are employed and bound under the 1937 Sharemilking Agreements Act which was introduced by statute of Parliament. This lower order Sharemilking Agreements Act allows men and women to be independent contractors without having to own dairy cows to enter into the New Zealand dairy industry. Many over the years have purchased their own farms. A dairy farmer employing a contract milker as an independent contractor, who receives his remuneration by so much a kilogram of milk solids (this is called a Walsh agreement), could if a dispute arises over the terms of the engagement, come under the jurisdiction of the 1937 Sharemilking Agreements Act and its terms. There is also the risk of the IRD not accepting that the employees are deemed as independent contractors and have sought PAYE reimbursement payments from
farmer employers who have entered such agreements. There is a big difference between the status of an independent contractor and that of an employee. The independent contractor must meet the control tests, the independence test, the organisation or integration test, the intention of the parties and the business test or the economic reality test. This involves whether the independent contractor works for other people or clients, supplies his or her own tools or equipment, has direct responsibility for the profits and risk of the business, hires or fires whoever he or she wishes to help do the job, pays accounts for taxes and government and professional fees and most importantly, advertises and produces a GST invoice directly to the farmer for the work that has been done. Any dairy farmer engaging an independent contractor to milk the cows or to do work on the farm, should ensure that payments are made directly to the contractor on the presentation of a GST

The fundamental test looks at factors such as whether the type of business or the nature of the job justifies or requires using an independent contractor. Is there a time limit for completing a specific project. Can the worker be dismissed. Who is legally liable if the job goes wrong. Usually, an independent contractor agrees to be responsible for his or her work. He or she cannot usually be ‘dismissed’, although the contract can be terminated if it is broken.

Walsh agreement payments have ranged from as low as $1 per kilogram of milk solids upwards, and in many cases this is not sustainable remuneration. Farmers of New Zealand encourages dairy farmers looking for managerial employees to use the Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011. It is still the best way to encourage the next generation into farm ownership with the support of the banks and the farmer retains management control and it specifies the relationship and the obligations that must be carried out by the dairy farmer employer and the sharemilker. The intention of the parties is important. This test looks at the intention of each party to the agreement regarding the nature of the relationship. The fact that a written contract states that a person is an employee or an independent contractor, may indicate the intention of the parties but is not determinative. If the actual circumstances point to an employment relationship, then simply labelling it an independent contract will not alter the actuality.

Wool Perspective From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool
Supply vs demand imbalance keeps prices up During the past few weeks and up until writing, the crossbred market in particular continued to surge ahead with new highs achieved at every wool
auction. Exporters battled each other to gain supremacy in the auction room often with ‘buy at best’ instructions leaving a distinct sign of ‘blood on the floor’. Whilst growers pondered whether local wool merchants were

offering good prices at the farm gate, real values in the auction room were rapidly surpassing the country prices, a reflection of the supply versus demand imbalance. Slow bidding in the auction room and clearances of 100% in some broker catalogues, certainly told the story of a strong market. Crossbred fleece prices bolted past the 600 cents per kilogram clean mark at Christchurch on October 24 and then on October 31 in Napier continued their onwards charge. Another lift was apparent for crossbred fleece types on November 7 in Christchurch, however a few of the finer crossbred hogget types struggled to keep pace — perhaps a sign that the market had been a little ‘over-cooked’. Early-shorn crossbreds were not far behind the full length fleece for price, and second-shear types were only slightly off that pace. Bulky oddments drew good attention from the buyers’ bench with many romping home at very good odds indeed compared to body wool prices, with some of the shorter types sprinting home with prices which were reserved for fleece not that long ago. Mid-micron types offered during the past month met with a mixed reception but true to type Halfbred and Corriedale wools definitely enjoyed the best of the market. Comment from the exporting fraternity was harshly negative towards some mid-micron wools of doubtful breeding which definitely do not perform as well as the straight bred types during processing — thus discounts were obvious for those. Merino wool types generally met with good enthusiasm from the specialist buyers in attendance at the Christchurch auction centre however a domination of hogget wools of average to poor tensile strength did limit buyer demand. An
observation of a few merino clips throughout broker catalogues was the number of lines classed in comparison to the results achieved. Whilst it is important to ensure lines are as even as possible, the cost of testing and handling relative to the dollar value of the product must be taken into consideration and splitting lines of wool for a mere point of a micron, when in every other way the wools are similar, is at present simply not cost effective for the grower. A number of extra-fine and ultrafine wools struggled to reach grower expectation as a glut of these types was apparent on both sides of the Tasman, and buyers had the luxury of being extremely selective when filling their often limited orders. At this time of year we begin to see wool style and tensile strength deteriorate due to the effects of lambing, competition for feed and changing feed conditions, plus warmer weather conditions. In-shed wool handling and preparation becomes even more important during the late spring and summer months and, even in such a strong market environment, buyers will become critical of mixed length, tender, and discoloured wools being mixed together. The basics never change — keep similar lengths together, keep sound wools separate from tender wools, remove cotts and cotted points from otherwise free grown sound fleece lines, skirt lightly to ensure length and colour remain reasonably even and remove heavy vegetable contamination. If these basics are adhered to and you communicate with your PGG Wrightson wool advisor along with your shearing contractor well prior to shearing, the result for your efforts will be positive. That’s my view.

Sometimes these celebrations bring extra stress — financial or otherwise. Family relations can be strained in general or couples may have separated meaning time with children is restricted/ split causing grief for all the family members concerned. There may have also been a death or other major loss during the year which is highlighted at Christmas. So, how can we lessen the stress, celebrate, and remember all at the same time? Keeping it simple, using the resources we have around us, spending time to ourselves as well as with the people we love — looking back at your favourite times may give you some ideas. COUNTRY GIRL AT HEART by Joanne Speechly
Country music star Annette Hawkins is a familiar face on the country music scene but home is where the heart is, and for Annette and husband Reece, home is Ruatangata. Annette discovered her voice at the age of 10 — or rather, a family friend did — and this marked the beginning of her singing career. She became an active member of Whangarei Country Music Club, performed regularly with family and friends, launched a successful solo career and more recently became one half of a popular duo act with Kim Copedo, known as Annette and Kim. The pair have recently returned from a trip to the United States where they were inducted into America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame. However, Annette the singer, songwriter, recording artist and entertainer, is also Annette the caregiver, wife, hairdresser, Body Talk practitioner and farmer. “I’m a country girl at heart,” says Annette. “Reece and I have a 40-acre lifestyle block at home in Ruatangata
and a 100-acre grazing block at Pipiwai, where we run dry stock. We usually rear calves too but this year we’re having a break. Annette is also a keen gardener. Their home is surrounded by large gardens, including a vege garden and big orchard, so Annette can indulge her love of bottling fruit. “At home we have cattle, a flock of sheep, chickens, ring-neck doves, a donkey, cats, dogs, and last Christmas Reece bought me a horse, so I’ve just started to get back into riding.” Vault the horse, affectionately known as Girlfriend, has recently buddied up with Annette’s other love, Elvis, an eleven-year-old Jerusalem donkey who at birth had a crop of black hair — hence the name Elvis. “I’ve had Elvis since he was 10 days old and we quickly became best of

When the farm is not keeping them busy, Reece is a self-employed agricultural brush weed sprayer and Annette works as a Body Talk practitioner from her home clinic. Combine the mustard, oil, lemon juice, sugar and pepper. Pour over the vegetables. Mix to evenly coat. Bake at 200°C for 25-35 minutes or until tender and golden brown. Alternatively cook on a medium to hot barbecue plate for about 10-15 minutes or until tender.

Finding a good multi supplement Those who oppose supplements rightly state that most New Zealanders do not have outright nutrient deficiencies. What many experts miss is that the human body performs best with optimal levels of key micro-nutrients. We may only need 30mg of vitamin C to prevent scurvy but the body works best with at least 500mg each day, more if you are unwell and even more if you smoke. Our levels of selenium are well below international guidelines. While this may increase the risk of many cancers and other diseases we generally seem to survive on lower levels. Only by using well formulated supplements can you guarantee that you body is getting the right amounts of all 20+ essential minerals, all the vitamins and then the wide range of biologically active antioxidants that have significant protective benefits. A full B complex is important but 200–400IU of natural vitamin E and 1000IU of vitamin D are even more important. Beta carotene is the safer option for vitamin A as your body only converts this A as needed. A good multi should also be a comprehensive multiantioxidant. My favourite general purpose antioxidant is a patented grape seed extract (OPC) ActiVin™. You can read about this at www.activin.com. To this I like to include lutein for eyes, lycopene for prostate, hesperidin, bilberry and goji for circulation and immune support plus other synergistic compounds. When selecting a product your first check should be the formula. Secondly ask about the quality of the actual ingredients and thirdly whether the company is really interested in your health or just selling you products. See whether the company is able and willing to give you personalised advice and cares enough to track your progress to ensure you are reaching your goals. Give me a call for further information. Regatta of the past …
partake in launch and powerboat races, kayaking contests and all manner of aquatic activities. The sometimes dramatic $1,000 bathtub race attracts all eyes to the water, while a carnival atmosphere is in progress ashore, with side shows and a huge marquee hosting beauty contests and live music — it is party time. This year the local regatta committee promises plenty of fun, sport, competition and food and refreshments, to make the event as spectacular as in past years, along with good security to put the emphasis for the whole event on safety and family enjoyment. The early days of the regatta were recorded by the late Mavis Smith, whose family still farms in the upper Kaipara area today. She wrote in her book Child of the Kauri: “For a family raised at the harbour’s edge, I guess there had to be a tinge of salt water in the blood, and the annual Otamatea Regatta held at Pahi was one of the years’ highlights. There was always plenty of excitement at these functions with a wide variety of activities
on water and land. The launch races provided such speed thrills as they were able — lumbering craft, chiefly working launches, plugging sedately around the course with the officials themselves being in some considerable doubt as to who won what.” ‘There were also swimming races for horses and riders on a course from Whakapirau to Pahi. This was a tough trial of stamina and when an error of judgment on the part of the committee resulted in the animals having to flounder through deep mud on the Pahi side, the event was deleted from future programmes.’ The regatta today is a spectacular event with modern and faster craft. Gone are the licensed hotel, the buggies and the mullet boats, but the atmosphere of tidewater and salty mud still lingers. While the shades of those early settlers may (or may not!) witness Pahi Regatta, one thing is certain — there will be many pioneer family descendents gathered, and the Regatta committee promises the event will be bigger and better than ever.

FISHING, HUNTING & OUTDOORS
From the skies to the surf
Anglers love their secret spots — those magic places where the scenery is beautiful, the weather is always just right, and the fish seem to hook up willingly. Some, unfortunately, have become common knowledge, ruining their sense of mystery, but others remain inaccessible, especially around the rugged coastline of the north. Hunters, too, are keen to get out into the back blocks, accessing areas which would usually require a day or two of backpack slogging through tussock and bush. After all, this is the ‘real New Zealand’, the kind of wilderness which you could imagine legends like Barry Crump striding through with rifle and pack. Modern technology has provided the answer to both these outdoor riddles, with the rise of helihunting and helifishing. Growing out of the need for pilots to diversify their portfolios and step outside the bounds of simply topdressing farmers’ fields, both industries have literally taken off in
recent years, touted as the perfect way to experience the ‘back of beyond’ — without the back-breaking hike to and from the wild country. Helifishers enjoy the scenic view from the air as they descend on rockfishing locations that can’t even be navigated by boat. Spots in the Bay of Islands, Cavalli Islands and more are able to be hooked into by this new method of transport, and as well as just fishing the same pilots can grant access to new horizons for divers as well. Helihunting grew out of the deer boom of the 1980s, which saw many chopper jockeys shooting from the air, or even performing live capture missions. Now these seasoned guides bring hunters into remote areas, with some having access to DOC and private land not available to those on foot, or even on four wheels.

And it’s not just the locals who are keen to take to the skies for a day or two of shooting and angling adventure. Foreign tourists have embraced this unique way to get up close and personal with the Kiwi countryside, growing our nation’s popularity as a haven for outdoor pursuits.
Nowadays, you’ll even find snowboarders and mountain bikers hailing a helicopter to get them to the best spots — a boost to the industry which keeps many companies flying and allows them to be there when firefighting, search and rescue or agricultural duties call.

Once again another year has flashed by but all in all we have found it to be an extremely positive year with only a few bumps and bruises which happens every year when business is expanding. Our Te Kauwhata plant is pumping away under the guidance of Peter Boldero, the plant manager, who sets a high level with his fertiliser blending skills and special mixes. In the deep south, business is booming to the point where we have outgrown the building we were leasing and have purchased our own industrial site of 1.6 hectares in Mosgiel, giving us plenty of room for expansion. Our main man Darryn Graves has been cleverly balancing production, making the shift to the new premises and helping customers with their fertiliser needs, with the skilful art of a juggler keeping everything on the move with his positive attitude and friendly manner. The administration staff at headquarters in Tauranga have once again kept our business on course and moving in the right direction. We have had a few changes with our sales representatives during the past 12 months, for one reason or another; however the outcome has been positive — gaining new sales reps that have a passion for soil health and healthy animals — the future looks bright! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers who have been with us for many years and recognise the value of a good healthy soil which reflects through into plant and animal health and a healthy environment. I welcome onboard all the new customers that have joined us over the past twelve months and sincerely thank them all for choosing to farm with our fertilisers. Agrissentials fertilisers are multi-mineral, microbial rich, live living fertilisers that bring health and vitality back to farming soils, pasture, animals, the family and the environment. To find out more about Agrissentials best on fertilisers phone 0800 THE KEY that’s 0800 843 539 today for a FREE INFO PACK or you can contact your friendly representative Ray Holland on 021 669 059 to find out how we can make your farm more successful. (Please note that over the Christmas break the office will be closed from the 20th of December and fully operable again on the 6th of January.) Wishing you health, wealth and happiness — from Team Agrissentials John K Morris
