NorthTec is asking Northland farmers if they can help provide venues for the delivery of agricultural training programmes. From 2015, NorthTec will deliver its own level 2 and 3 agriculture programmes, which were previously contracted to a private training organisation. In order to gain the necessar y hands-on experience, students are required to take part in a wide range of farming activities. As NorthTec is not in the business of owning farms, it is seeking to work with existing commercial farmers to run its agricultural programmes. NorthTec is looking to develop partnerships in sheep, beef, dairy or mixed farms. The farm manager must be able to make time to work with the tutor, to identify tasks to be done and establish the way NorthTec agriculture student they should be carried out. Chelsea Jordan is hoping that farm “It will be a win-win venues can be found for 2015 courses situation, as our students will get the opportunity to gain skills, while Farmers must also be happy for the farmers will have work done for them students to use farm equipment, like at no cost,” says NorthTec Programme fencing gear and all-terrain vehicles. Primary sector enthusiast awarded scholarship Aspiring farmer Sam Moscrip of Hukerenui has been awarded the Whangarei Agricultural & Pastoral Society’s agricultural scholarship valued at $7,500. Four teen applications were received, with Sam taking the honours after a short-list of nine applicants were interviewed. Sam says he loves the physical nature of farming and doesn’t mind getting up at 4am if it helps him move towards his goal of farm ownership by 2025. “I’ve been running milkings since the age of 12 and love to work hard, as I feel the harder I work, the bigger the rewards.” Sam has just completed his first year at Lincoln University. During this year he has also supported six TeenAg clubs, was elected chairman of the Lincoln Young Farmers Club and continued to provide advice and support for the Kamo High School TeenAg Club where he was chairman until he left school at the end of 2013. Society President, Murray Jagger, says Sam’s work ethic, commitment to the primary sector and passion to share his experience by helping others was clearly evident throughout the interview process. “He is highly motivated and crystal clear about his future direction. community and industry contribution is also outstanding, demonstrating that our primary sector’s future is in great hands.” Mr Jagger says there has been a 19% decline in agricultural-related university graduates over the past 10 years. “As a sector, we need 10 times more than the current 100 agribusiness students graduating each year to meet national primary industry demand and

projected growth targets. The primary industry sector needs people like Sam to take the industry forward in the future. As such, the society relishes being able to support him in his chosen career.” More information on the Whangarei A&P Society Scholarship is available on www.whangareiap.org.nz.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

‘Heaven on earth’ FOR NORTHLAND WAGYU

BY CYNTHIA MATTHEWS

Rob Maskell says that it took three years to ďŹ nd the land on which he and Jeannie graze their Wagyu cattle. They visited on a ‘ruggedly wet windy day’, yet the wildness appealed, and they became the owners of 180 acres of ‘Heaven on Earth’.

heir Whangaroa farm, so named, rises to 320 metres and is guarded by towering rock cones. The home has a commanding position, with views north to Pukenui, while at its back forest stretches to the coast. It is offgrid and uses passive heating and solar power and has been constructed to their design. The block had no farm access and little fencing. Rob and Jeannie say that being more ‘urban people’ they initially leased out the land. “Firstly it was a dairy run-off, but when the farmer retired we left it fallow for a year. The neighbour’s Herefords soon got the grass down for us! Rob says it was a good thing — next season feed was scarce and the land was grazed by more than one mob of local cattle. An early task was fencing and Rob found a local farmer to teach him. That’s

how he discovered his grandfather, Charlie Caplan of Kaeo, had broken in the land in the 1930s and had done much of the original fencing. Charlie’s totara posts still hold up. He was one of the first to bring Appaloosas into the country and Jeannie and Rob continue this link with their American Quarter horses at the farm. With his new skill Rob set about fencing off the 20 acres of bush. The difference came the very next season. He points out young kauri, Hall’s totara and rimu pushing above the canopy. “Regrowth was quick, agrees Jeannie. “There are far more birds and kiwi are all around us. Trapping is ongoing, plus a yearly cull brings good results. Although the higher paddocks are in kikuyu, Rob re-sowed the farm’s easier slopes which are thick in clover and plantain. The Wagyu cows do well here.

Jeannie and pet steer Goliath bred on-farm, a second generation bull from an Australian imported bull of a full blood line. Rob believes Wagyu bulls should be considered for use over dairy cows — “Wagyu are easy calving. Our cows calve in about 15 minutes. The calves are only around 27 to 28 kilos at birth but they’re strong. And there’s the meat!” Wagyu beef is sought after. Rob discovered it on several trips to Japan. “Wagyu were generally cart animals there and it was only about a hundred years ago that the qualities of the meat were realised. It has over fifty percent of marbled fat which gives it the exceptional taste and texture.” Jeannie says that the meat should command a premium in the market. Steers stay on the farm for four years before going away. “It’s five years before a return so you need plenty of feed — and patience. The main cost is the land for grazing them. The key is to not run too many animals.”

t all started in the seventies when Barry and Judy were share milking in the North. Barry wanted to keep goats since he’d always liked them. The Footes bought two goats at Matakohe and were ‘hooked in no time,’ as Judy describes it. Together with baby son the couple came to their Hikurangi farm and then set about establishing their goat dairy. The year before their arrival (around 1978) a Dairy Goat Coop had been set up at Hikurangi. In the earlier days of production goat dairies had to freeze the milk before transporting it. It was an extended process. The market

then suffered when a French goat milk product overseas was found to contain a ‘top up’ of cows’ milk while domestically, Judy explains, there was no real marketing of goats’ milk. Barry and Judy’s operation weathered the storms, and now every second day liquid milk goes to the New Zealand Dairy Goat Coop in Hamilton where it’s made into infant formula. “People know goats’ milk is better. It’s not just for those adults and infants with food sensitivities,” says Judy. The outlook is positive for New Zealand goat farmers with expanding markets. Judy notes that in Asia, goat milk was the

traditional milk for many. Barry chose Saanen goats since he considers they kid well and also recover well from kidding. Bucks are used and also A.I. Judy explains that with using bucks it helps that the kids aren’t all born at once. The Footes basically have a closed herd which assists in keeping the goats free of any imported health problems. However, they are looking into exchanging genetics with another goat farmer in Hamilton. Covered free stall barns are another essential means of supporting herd health. Around 18 years ago Barry and Judy began bringing their does under cover. There are significant benefits — when the goats were outside they had to be dried off after drenching for parasites but under cover drenches

are unnecessary and the goats are healthier. Pasture and supplements are brought to the animals. Fresh grass is cut and put on conveyor belts from which the goats can ‘select and graze’. Fescue and cocksfoot are grown and grain silage, whole grains, early winter maize and canola are offered. All feed is New Zealand and Australia sourced. The herd runs to 1,300 milkers and 1,000 kids. Around 400 of these will be sold on to producers new to the industry. Does can kid up to six years old, with some still kidding at seven or eight. 11-year-old pet goat Lolly is still kidding. (Lolly’s idea, not her owners, Judy assures.) Older does can be bought by new breeders as they can still get a kid or more from them to start a herd, she advises.

Today the Hikurangi goat farm is now one of two in Northland. There are many more in the Waikato. It’s a proposition for dairy farms too small to be viable, Judy explains. The Footes’ farm requires seven full-time workers and several others part-time. Son Garth and his wife Summer are part of the operation and the couple’s preschooler daughter Nella likes to be involved too. Her grandmother is supportive. Judy is an advocate for women to enter into goat farming. “It’s ideal employment as the animals are just the right size to handle.” With Nella in new redbands it looks like the Footes’ goat farm might continue for several generations yet.

For Andrew Blake and his Kiwi wife the journey here took in several ‘lives’ on the way — in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Brazil. They were both teachers and Andrew small farmed as well. He has commercially raised chickens in Zimbabwe, pigs in several countries and has always grown. The last has been a primary interest since

The Blake family’s first vision of their Moengawahine property was thickets of barbary hedges enveloping nine old sheds, Japanese cedars hemming in the house, (The 1893 ‘Rust House’ shifted from Whangarei) and shaded out orchards and paddocks. It was apparent they would need all their accumulated experience and some help. The Wrights, dairying across the river, turned up on the very first day. They were knowledgeable about local conditions

and the families remain good friends. The Blakes also looked overseas and ‘citizens of the world’ came to work with and for them — notably visitors from Germany, France, China, Japan and Romania. Some stayed for several seasons and each brought particular skills. Andrew says that he still lives in a cosmopolitan neighbourhood as quite a few people from overseas live around Pipiwai. They have married Kiwis and settled in the area. Andrew’s property sits up from

creeks and the Kaikou River. Seasonal flooding can make the nearby bridge impassable, but it’s also provided fertile flats which today support bulls and calf raising. Nearer the house the land shows the years of intensive input. The ‘good clay’ is built up with dry matter, including that from the cowshed. Sweet corn is the main crop. Andrew devised a machine from scrap that makes holes in the ground for direct transplanting. Although he’s permitted to take creek water, irrigation is now unnecessary as the dry matter protects the soil. In winter the plot is left fallow and then mowed, covered with black plastic, and planted. Andrew germinates the corn in plastic houses in late August and plants in September to meet the preChristmas market. Sugar cane, pineapple, coffee and strawberries also like life in the plastic houses. “Peppers, tomatoes and aubergines are best grown inside too, where you can keep the environment controlled and pest free,” says Andrew. The property’s original macadamias serve more as shelter than crop — south westerlies can steam up the valley. “They’re a folly,” says Andrew, “The nut yield was too small here. The citrus however, appreciate the wind protection. Some trees have been cropping forty years. They need

generous magnesium,” advises Andrew. “I find clementines have the best taste but borer can be a problem. Encore can grow small fruit after a while. Wax eyes go for the Satsuma and will clear out the top third of the trees of fruit. Juicing Valencia need a long time to sweeten and their appearance isn’t always so good for market selling. My best are Navels and Tangelos. They’re easiest to grow here.” He grows seven plum varieties but pigs now enjoy the fruits of the apple orchard because Andrew dislikes using the ‘disgracefully hazardous’ spray to fight Codling Moth. “Citrus and plums have been real winners here. I sell from the gate and avoid mainline markets.” The property’s roadside stall is always popular and he sells at two farmers’ markets. “The growing is good in New Zealand but marketing is the problem. Sell direct,” he advises. Andrew believes small farming calls for many other skills alongside those of growing and livestock and that a lifetime of land-based enterprise and a background in chemistry, soil chemistry, and biology have helped towards success. He is looking for new challenges now, those probably based around sharing knowledge gleaned from experience. It will certainly involve growing.

A look at sharemilking disputes Herd owning sharemilking agreements have been very common in the New Zealand dairy industry for 100 years. These particular 50/50 herd owning sharemilking agreements are not statutory agreements like the Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011. The Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011 provides the opportunity for an individual to become a sharemilker without owning the herd, working for a dairy farm owner. The right of set-off where a dairy farmer can instruct the dairy company to withhold milk proceeds owing to the sharemilker under the terms of the contract is one of the very important clauses that is in both sharemilking agreements. Lately it has been announced that Federated Farmers have deleted the setoff clause from their 50/50 herd owning sharemilking agreements. The statutory Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011 still retains the set-off clause. However, while still retaining this clause the dispute resolution process clauses must be strictly followed and it is only after the dispute has failed

to be resolved by conciliation that the farm owner is entitled to withhold the sharemilker’s proceeds to the value of the claims as follows: (a) The farm owner must notify the sharemilker in writing of the intention to retain the sharemilker’s payment; (b) The farm owner is not entitled to retain or deduct from any one payment due or to become due, to the sharemilker more than 75% of any such payment; (c) All money deducted from the sharemilker will be paid into the farm owner’s solicitor’s interest-bearing trust account to be accounted for on request by either party. The farm owner must be very careful to follow the rules strictly as set out in the Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011. If the farm owner withholds more money from the sharemilker than the amount the farm owner is claiming, then in the absence of extenuating circumstances, the arbitrator must

award interest on that money at a rate of 8% per month or part of the month compounding, This equates to 96% interest per annum. If the farm owner withholds only the amount being claimed and the farm owner’s claims are subsequently not awarded in full, the arbitrator must award interest at a rate of up to 5% per month compounding on the excess money withheld. Arbitration was seen at one time as the best option to settle sharemilking disputes. Today however the cost of arbitration can amount to many thousands of dollars. The Farmers of New Zealand sharemilking agreements give the parties, we believe, a number of options that the farm owner and the sharemilker can decide on prior to signing the 50/50 herd owning sharemilking agreements, which ensures a speedy conciliation process and a low cost method of resolving their dispute. Farmers of New Zealand believes that the District Court Dispute Tribunal is the most economic way to settle claims of $15,000–$20,000, if the dispute cannot be resolved by professional conciliation. We have a renowned reputation for providing successful professional advice in sharemilking and employment matters. If you have a query, contact our membership help desk services.

Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd

Market coloured with caution A cautionar y tone per vades the log export segment with most commentators suggesting in November that settlements in China were coming off US$3 to $4 per cubic metre. Meanwhile the New Zealand domestic market was business as usual with, if anything, a slightly firming tone in demand and prices. Domestic log sales are generally in a supply demand balance but the overwhelming commentary from the ‘locals’ centres on sales being at an okay level, but certainly not record beating. Most sawmillers indicated sales were better than at the same time last year. Volume appears to be keeping a lid on any significant price movements. In our key export market of China, the big issue at present is credit. While many provincial governments have

announced loosening housing lending policies, many traders and sawmills are still reeling from the recent 30% price drop in log prices. Despite what appears to be a huge market, it is important to realise much of the softwood log trade in China is underwritten by very few companies. These are often very large wholly or majority government owned companies who operate within very strict profit and margin parameters. They are also the ones who can issue Letters of Credit (LCs) to traders and factory owners. Many of these companies lost huge money recently, one company reportedly in excess of US$1 billion. Sawmill owners (often called factories in China) will typically be required to pay a 20 to 25% deposit to open an LC. Large

losses by both LC opener and sawmill owner occur when buyers walk away from a sale. When the market drops suddenly, as it did recently, a buyer will walk away from the deposit rather than lose even more on the log order, leaving the LC issuer ‘holding the baby’. Recently two substantial players in the LC space announced an exit from the log trade quoting substantial losses, price volatility and uncertainty. This has sent shivers down the spine of the market with some vessels leaving New Zealand known not to have LCs confirmed at time of sailing. All of this makes for a jittery trade, high levels of uncertainty and all players scrambling for more margin. Consumption across the China Eastern Seaboard has remained at about 55,000 cubic metres per day (seven days per week), off by about 10,000 per day compared to the same time last year. However, inventory levels are falling stubbornly, now just on 3.7 million cubic metres, representing two month’s supply. Log supply from the United States and Canada is falling dramatically, indeed by less than half compared to October 2013. For the most part, everyone expects the log inventory level to keep falling but all are eying the New Zealand and Australia supply side.

As indicated last month we saw CIF settlements in China stabilise at around the US$132–$134 mark with a suggestion we could see US$2 or $3 per cubic metre declines in November settlements. Indeed this prophecy is being realised at time of writing with most suggesting November settlements will be US$128–$130. Price negotiations in our other key markets of India and Korea are pretty much following the China lead. India is continuing to show great promise for much larger volumes ahead and prices at wharf gate generally just slightly ahead of China at present. New ports are being reviewed for the log trade in India with congestion and discharging cargo amongst some of the biggest challenges. Certainly the emails from potential India buyers are a veritable flood, suggesting continued and new interest in developing this trade further. Shipping costs are softening ever so slightly and it is also great to see some downward movement in the NZ$ against the US$. Therefore overall we would not expect to see great change in wharf gate prices this month and December looks like more of the same. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember, the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees.

Regatta’s fun recipe

Fun both on and off the water is the recipe for the Pahi Regatta, held over Anniversary Weekend and which attracts participants from all around the north. The North Kaipara Harbour’s annual marine festival has been running since 1886 — with the exception of some wartime years — and it is still going strong. The local camping ground becomes a village of wall-to-wall tents, caravans and house trucks for three days of harbour-side fun and games and the residents and visitors partake in launch and powerboat races, kayaking contests and all manner of aquatic activities. The sometimes dramatic bathtub race attracts all eyes to the water, while a carnival atmosphere is in progress ashore, with side shows and a huge marquee hosting beauty contests and live music. The emphasis will once again be on plenty of fun, plenty of sport and plenty of entertainment with the overall emphasis on safety and family enjoyment. The events begin on Saturday, and on the Sunday, contestants in the bath-tub race, with each craft limited to a twohorsepower motor, will be vying for a top purse of $1,000. The Pahi Regatta once attracted steamers from Helensville loaded with Aucklanders, to take part in greasy pole competitions, horse swimming races, and other long-abandoned events. The early days of the regatta were recorded by the late Mavis Smith, whose

family still farms in the upper Kaipara area today. She wrote in her book Child of the Kauri: “For a family raised at the harbour’s edge, I guess there had to be a tinge of salt water in the blood, and the annual Otamatea Regatta held at Pahi was one of the years’ highlights. “There was always plenty of excitement at these functions with a wide variety of activities on water and land. The launch races provided such speed thrills as they were able — lumbering craft, chiefly working launches, plugging sedately around the course with the officials themselves being in some considerable doubt as to who won what.” ‘There were also swimming races for horses and riders on a course from Whakapirau to Pahi. This was a tough trial of stamina and when an error of judgement on the part of the committee resulted in the animals having to flounder through deep mud on the Pahi side, the event was deleted from future programmes.’ The regatta today is a spectacular event with modern and faster craft. Gone are the licensed hotel, the buggies and

Two of the boats participating in last year’s Pahi regatta

the mullet boats, but the atmosphere of tidewater and salty mud still lingers. “Unfortunately, OSH and political correctness have taken a toll over the years, says a Pahi resident ‘old-timer.’ But the spirit of the regatta weekend has endured and it still attracts visitors

from far and wide, with camping space at an absolute premium.”

BOOK REVEIW

Local farmers feature in Angus cookbook Local Angus breeders, John and Joss Bayly and their farm, Wairoa Station from Paihia, are proudly featured in a newly released book. A Cut Above, cooking with AngusPure, is a cookbook with a difference and is loosely based on the paddock to plate concept. The collection of beef recipes, each with its own tantalising photograph, is interspersed with stories and snapshots from New Zealand’s rural landscape. Wairoa, one of six Angus studs featured in the book, consists of 800 hectares and is home to the Angus Stud of Waitangi Angus. Joss is the third generation of the Bayly family to live and farm here — her grandparents Charles and Nora purchased the property from the Hingstone family in 1929. A Cut Above, features 10 pages of scenic photographs and family history. Author Gerhard Egger visited John and Joss earlier this year and interviewed them about the property’s history and their farming practices today, with special emphasis on the Angus Stud.

The Baylys believe there is a market overseas for premium quality grass fed beef with good marbling and it is this quality of meat that they breed for. Both John and Joss are well aware of the beauty and historical significance of their home and they welcome school groups who visit the beaches and learn what make this property unique. People will enjoy the rural aspect of this cookbook, there is a wide selection recipes, from the ‘quick and easy’ to ‘long and slow cooking’, as well as great ideas for the barbecue and a comprehensive selection of offal recipes. Joss has even contributed her family’s favourite — Ribbed Rolled Roast. European trained chef turned professional photographer Gerhard

Soil Matters with Peter Burton

Lower payout unmasks real problem The simple remedy for a lower dairy payout is to produce more kilograms of milk solids, but in nearly every situation that works only if the extra is generated from pasture. To produce more from pasture an increase in the total amount grown is required. And the unpalatable truth is

that annual pasture production is on a steady decline and has been for the last twenty years. MAF pasture growth figures from various areas in the Waikato for the years 1978–1982 were as high as 18,250kgDM/ha, without the use of fertiliser nitrogen. Figures from DairyNZ Monitor properties are no longer measured by

monthly cage cuts, however there’s a general consensus that anything over 15,000kgDM/ha from permanent grazed pasture now is exceptional. The reduction in pasture production has followed an increase in the use of fertiliser nitrogen, and at ESI we believe the two are linked. Total pasture production last season from the two ESI monitored dairy properties, one an irrigated farm at Galatea, and the other non-irrigated near Edgecumbe in the Bay of Plenty grew 21,504kgDM/ha and 21,397kgDM per hectare respectively. Not only is the quantity greater than district average the quality is also superior based on an independent analysis. This may seem counterintuitive however in all natural systems the healthiest and strongest are also the most productive. ESI based total nutrient programmes contain all essential elements but are not reliant on fertiliser nitrogen. In its place is nitrogen fixed directly from the atmosphere as well as that fixed by bacteria in the nodules of clover. Soil conditions are altered to ensure that the wide range of selected fungi and bacteria are able to speed the rate at which nutrient is cycled resulting in an increasingly efficient system producing strong even growth throughout the growing season. A benefit often mentioned is the outstanding growth in November and December, a time when conventionally fertilised properties often struggle. It’s an important time and becoming

increasingly so as a reduction in spring inductions means improved mating performance is essential. With typically twice the clover content in the pasture as a result of no nitrogen being required from September until April production in all respects is enhanced. Growth rates of young animals improve as well as weight gain and milk solid production. Damage by flea and weevil is minimal as is damage by grub and beetle. Pasture performance is outstanding with pasture renewal often becoming a recreational rather than an essential autumn activity. As is often discussed, the ability to consistently produce a cash surplus is the ability to control costs. As a result well managed properties implementing full ESI nutrient programmes are financially better placed to cope with wide fluctuations in product return. It’s important to appreciate that farming is a highly competitive activity, with the top echelon being continuously profitable and those with the highest costs most vulnerable to increasing interest rates, compliance charges, and reduced income. The challenges presented by nature are best met by decisions made on farm by operators with a genuine love of farming. Being able to implement a low cost system with steadily increasing pasture production reduces the risk of outside agencies becoming dominant decision makers in your farming operation. Focus on Effluent

A summertime warning

On-farm effluent is attracting local government’s attention, but another source of waterway pollution is also under scrutiny, especially so as the summer comes around and more boats head out into Northland’s waterways. Boat sewage is a serious risk to human and animal health and the environment, says the Northland Regional Council. To continue to enjoy Northland’s coast and safely gather and eat seafood, our waters must be kept

free of sewage. There are strict rules covering sewage discharges from boats in Northland waters. Untreated boat sewage must be discharged well outside of any harbour or at a marina pumping facility. The discharge of untreated sewage in

emergency areas of Whangaruru and Whangaroa is only permitted when wind conditions at the mouth of the harbour are above 25 knots and sea swells exceed three metres or discharge takes place during the first three hours of an outgoing tide. There are two grades of treated sewage which depend on the system used. Contact regional council staff on 0800 002 004 for details. It is illegal to discharge ‘Grade A’ treated sewage within 100 metres of a marine farm. It’s also illegal to discharge ‘Grade B’ treated sewage within 500 metres of a marine farm or gazetted Maitaitai Reserve. Boat sewage is much more concentrated than sewage from land. It’s estimated that an untreated discharge from a single weekend boatie can put

the same quantity of bacterial pollution into the water as treated sewage from thousands of people on land. Boat sewage can contaminate the water with long-living viruses which can cause harmful diseases, like Hepatitis A, or severe stomach upsets. Shellfish can become unsafe to eat for weeks after exposure to sewage as they are filter feeders — they concentrate viruses absorbed from the water that surrounds them.

Focus on Effluent An independent warrant of fitness Getting a certified ‘WoF’ assessor can only be good practice, particularly when a farmer has upgraded his effluent systems but may may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with. Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report. ‘Then you know what is needed to upgrade. For a sharemilker moving onto a farm being able to see a ‘WoF’ report means you know what kind of system you’re taking on’. There is no legislation or regulations around a dairy effluent ‘WoF’, it is a voluntary programme, sort of like a building inspection. The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the irrigation network as well as a lot more. It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. For instance the assessor will insert a flow meter and pressure gauge into the mainline as that helps identify if there is a problem with the pump.

They carry out a full irrigator inspection and test the application depth and average rate. They also calculate the amount of storage for the type of effluent management system on the farm. After the assessor has completed the work a report is prepared for the farm owner/manager. All the certified ‘WoF’ assessors have several years of experience. Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on-farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WoF’ assessors. All the information that is gathered is stored in a central database at QCONZ. It is only used to analyse trends on farms over time and to see if there are any areas of concern that

the dairy industry needs to focus more attention on. It’s just a matter of calling up your local Certified ‘WoF’ assessor and making a time for them to come out.

They’ll make sure you are fully informed in terms of what information they need from you and what areas of the farm they need access to. Contact www. effluentaccreditation.co.nz.

Time to start planning by Rachel Sorley, Environmental Fertilisers

Don’t be discouraged with farming — plan now and do a lot better next year. Has your farm hit a wall? Do you feel your farm is not growing the quality of grass it used to? Environmental Fertilisers have developed a range of biological fertilisers to bring the soil biology back to life to utilise the locked up nutrients

which have been applied over the years from synthetic fertilisers. By activating the biology and balancing the nutrients in conjunction with the Reams Soil Test your farm will now be able to reach its true potential. Working closely with our soil scientists, we will test and balance your soils using fertilisers that are life-promoting and not harmful to the microbes living in the soil. These microbes are your workforce willing to get the nutrients the plants are looking for. Your soil microbes (underground livestock) dictate the number of livestock carried above the soil. Organise an on-farm visit with your local farm consultant, Alan Rockell — he will talk you through the process of transitioning your farm from using conventional synthetic fertilisers to a proven system that works. We will be at the Northland Field Days at site 145 as usual. Bring us your questions and concerns. Your local Northland Farm Consultant is Alan Rockell. Give him a ring on 022 061 0734 or 0800 867 6737 or send him an email sales2@ef.net.nz.

Keeping on track over the festive season Mating season is over and we are all looking forward to summer holidays. For those of us lucky enough to head away for the festive season, it’s going to mean leaving staff or kids completely in charge, or possibly some ring-ins who we’ve never worked with before. It can be a slightly unsettling thought when the aim of getting away is to chill out. I’m one of those people who enjoys the thought of leaving cellphones turned off and becoming disconnected but I know other people don’t relax unless they have their finger on the pulse and can stay connected with what is happening at work and home. They still want to know that things on the farm are ticking along as they would have it run if they were there — and that number 431 is recovering well, or the right group has been correctly drafted, or Johnny has got

out of bed the morning after the night before. As luck would have it, these folk can have their overview of what’s happening at work from afar. Advances in dairy automation systems, like Tru-Test’s MiHub Herd Management System, enables the uploading of real time data into the cloud. This means a number of farmers will be checking start and finish times of milking, production yield and efficiency from the bach, or the boat, or Fiji. They can track what’s happening every milking on every cow. And what’s more, if necessity dictates, they can even set drafts and alerts online. Interestingly, Santa Claus seems to have had this idea of real time performance tracking for better decision-making sorted for a while.

Conservation is key

For

Plumbing Roofing & Drainage

Water costs at the wallet, and farming is a major user of a resource we’ve taken for granted forever. Which is more and more attracting attention from scientists, conservationists, farmers and ev e n suburban households. On the land, for instance, overflowing stock water troughs lose a lot of water. So do leaks from water pipes. If you are on councilsupplied water with a volume charge, leaks that are not repaired promptly will add significantly to your water bill. There’s also the matter of electricity. About 20–30% of power costs on the farm are water related — pumping water into storage, down the farm, wash-down and effluent pumping. So improvements to reduce water use cut power costs which will save money year-on-year. Annual costs for animal health remedies are significant and if an inline dispensing system is used leaks mean those remedies are not getting to your stock in the right dose. This is a cost in lost remedies and ultimately to the health and performance of stock. It’s easy to lose lots of water fast — about 14 cubic metres a day, for example, through a hole the size of a small nail. With the onset of summer, the mantra continues that New Zealand must improve its water storage for agriculture and no doubt in months to come, farmers will look to reduce drought impact on stock health and welfare. Government action in support includes the Irrigation Acceleration Fund which is intended to help realise the potential for irrigated agriculture to contribute to sustainable economic growth throughout New Zealand.

The 2011 Budget allocated $35 million over five years to support the development of irrigation infrastructure proposals to the ‘investment-ready’ prospectus stage. The IAF’s primary purpose is to support regional-scale, rural, water infrastructure proposals. The IAF will continue support for strategic water management studies and strategies and community irrigation schemes, that was previously available through the Sustainable Farming Fund and the Community Irrigation Fund. The IAF, as far as is practicable, adopts a multi-year development programme-based approach, subject to achievement of milestones and confirmation that the proposed project continues to be viable. While water retention projects may be burgeoning, there is standing advice from the Ministry of Primary Industries that is relevant today, as it has been in a number of years past when the cyclical drought conditions have hit the rural sector. Farmers in drought-affected areas will need to consider all options to maintain optimum stock health and welfare.

Although top-dressing generally has low priority it may be an option that will pay off in some areas. It is important to remember that in dry conditions superphosphate fertiliser will persist on the ground, he said. Stock grazing pasture before the fertiliser has been washed into the soil — particularly if the pasture is short — are at risk of poisoning. Prevention of poisoning depends on withholding stock from recently top-dressed pasture until more than 8mm of rain has fallen.

There’s something in the water… Kiwis strive for our green clean image, but sadly our water sources are increasingly becoming contaminated. It is now becoming more difficult to obtain pure water via traditional bores, river supply and rainwater harvesting, as resource consents aim at preservation and control. Waterborne illness is often the result of some water sources and Pump and Purify is a business that can provide inline protection, ensuring water at its best. The company advice is to perform water tests when there are changes in water in taste, odour or visually, when maintenance is done on water supply equipment, as annual maintenance or if you bring children into your household. Pump and Purify specialises in filtration systems for under bench filtration, whole of house, or for Fonterra dairy shed UV systems. Whole of house systems with UV can be installed for less than $1,000. The company offers customised or simple off- the-shelf systems, as well as pumps for pressure systems, pools, irrigation, washdown, vat wash, bore pumps, circulator pumps and much more!

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Also available at:

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

Christmas Greetings by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

By the time you get to read this, the year of 2104 will almost be done. What a year, what a roller coaster ride for everybody, talk about ups and downs and round and rounds, from a strong milk solid payout and then it’s vertical plunge into the ground with a shower of sparks, a dizzy head a big gulp of oxygen and hey, it’s back to keeping the farm pumping and the New Zealand economy going. We wish all the New Zealand food and beverage producers a very merry Christmas and thank them all for the effort they make on a daily basis to keep our economy growing; with special wishes to our loyal customers and the band of new customers who have joined our ranks. More and more producers are asking for information about our multi-mineral rich fertilisers and about the natural track we have been on for the past twenty years, working with Mother Nature and all that natural capital she provides to make production possible.

There is strong talk from Australia about a move away from the chemical age in pursuit of better quality produce. Every dog has its day, as the revolution spins towards more natural methods and sustainable and eco-friendly production. Over the past 10 years I have recognised an increasing demand for food produced in a safe certified nutritiously dense manner as people all over the globe become more concerned about their health and what they are eating. Latest reports out of UK (one of New Zealand’s leading

markets) say that 83% of people there are eating some types of organic food. This new consumer call is ideally suited to New Zealand’s conditions of soil, climate, our innovation and our isolation. To produce food to qualify for this market is simple — it’s all about changing the soil, change the soil and you can change the quality of the food, it’s that straightforward. Agrissentials’ focus is directed at the soil; get the soil right and all life above the soil, plants, animals and people will be right. Agrissentials’ live living multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers are designed to bring health and vitality back to soils, our environment and most importantly our food. After 30 years down the natural path I firmly believe that the time is perfect for a change back to natural methods of food production. Todays’ chemical methods have tied us into commodity markets, where we are competing against other big commodity suppliers, as farmers throughout the planet are all struggling to make a decent living through this dominated system. Changing our production methods by working with nature, increasing the depth, microbial life and mineral content of the topsoil will in turn increase soil carbon, soil water retention and soil drainage capacity, resulting in increased production and better food quality. Such a move could take us away from the instability of commodity markets and into the lucrative markets of the worlds’ affluent consumers — something to think about this New Year. In the spirit of Christmas, Agrissentials have loads of amazing specials to get your soil pumping and things growing. Whether you’re a home gardener, lifestyle block owner, commercial grower or farmer — there’s a deal for you AND some limited edition Christmas packs that make a fantastic Christmas gift for that someone special. Call 0800 THE KEY (0800 843 539) or your local best on earth fertiliser rep Mike Jujnovich on 021 669 059 to redeem your special Christmas coupon today! (Please note that over the Christmas break the office will be closed from the 19th of December and fully operable again on the 5th of January.) Wishing you health, wealth, happiness and a prosperous 2015 — bring it on! From Team Agrissentials.

RURAL WHEELS

25

Taking it to the streets by Andy Bryenton

The versatile and hard-working Suzuki DR200 has been so popular with farmers over the years that it’s almost as much a part of the rural landscape as wire fences and bales of silage. The tough little 199cc two-wheelers are everywhere, and there are plenty of farm workers who have gotten their first taste of motorcycling by taking the DR200 for a run down the races or through the paddocks. That’s strictly for work, though — most riders quickly progress to something with a bit more focussed design if they want to hit the motocross track or the trail. But how about if you want to go the other way — taking to the open road for some touring adventures this summer? Chances are, if you are familiar with the DR200, you might not enjoy the smoothest of two-lane blacktop to your door. A sports crossover bike like the big V-Strom is the perfect answer, but it’s a handful for learner riders. That’s where the Suzuki engineers have played it smart, adapting the DR200 itself as a go-anywhere, street legal 199cc learner-approved ride. With styling tweaks garnered from the RM-Z series of dirt bikes and a host of ergonomic adjustments to take the rural, utilitarian look and feel off the edges, the DR200S is transformed from a farmhand’s working tool to a

There may not seem to be a huge helping of horsepower lurking in that sub-200-cube mill, but it proves ample to flick what is only a 126 kilo bike around, especially when that bike has a feather-light clutch and smooth, longtravel suspension. Best of all, for anyone who has ever rounded up a herd or

simply bashed through the paddocks on a farm bike, the DR200S feels familiar and inspires confidence. Suzuki have gone much further than just bolting indicators and a headlamp to their venerable DR200 ‘Trojan’ in order to create a cross-over adventure bike. A look beneath the surface reveals many small adjustments designed to increase comfort and rider enjoyment.

Early start for off-road fun by Andy Bryenton

Ask any of the top riders on the motocross circuit — or flip through the biographies in any magazine featuring the up-and-comers in the sport. All but the most forgetful will thank their parents for years of support — and those who don’t will likely have some explaining to do next time they visit mum and dad! ‘Start ‘em young’ is the philosophy for off-road riding, whether or not your little tykes plan to go competitive or if they just want to join their siblings and parents having some fun on the trails or on the track. With Christmas just around the corner, we gathered some wise words about getting your kids started in off-road riding, to make this experience as much fun — and as safe — as possible. First up, go with a tried and trusted brand. Safety first is the watchword, and big names like Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Polaris simply have superior build quality to some machines which have little provenance. Honda, for example, fit extra wide tyres and a parentadjustable throttle restrictor to their CRF50F, allowing it to be safely piloted by ages five and up. The next step up — for example, Suzuki’s JR80 — adds more two-stroke power, but remains light and responsive.

Another option is to let the kids follow in your footsteps (or wheel tracks) with a smaller version of a top-flight racing quad. Stability is no issue when getting on board the Polaris Outlaw, available in 50cc and 90cc variants, and once again a speed limiter is standard equipment to avoid over-exuberant incidents! This little firecracker is also available in hot pink — may we suggest, the perfect substitute for a pony, and one which requires far less maintenance? Finally, make sure you have all the right safety gear for the track or the trail. Even at low speeds, under supervision, gloves, boots and a helmet are a must. Your local motorcycle store will be happy to fit out the kids with all the hardware to keep them safe from bumps and knocks. Talk to your local MX or trail riding club, too — many have fun and social young rider’s programmes you can get involved in to teach skills and build confidence.

The annual show in Kaikohe on January 10 promises to provide fun and entertainment for the whole family. Formed in 1927, Kaikohe Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association held its early shows at various venues around town until it purchased its current 30 acre home, Kaikohe Showgrounds and Equestrian Centre, in 1967. Development of the site has been ongoing and the improvement of facilities has involved years of effort by many volunteers and members. As a member of the Royal Agricultural Society of NZ, Kaikohe Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association promotes the development of agricultural, pastoral, horticultural,

stock-raising and forestry resources in New Zealand and continues to promote and encourage excellence in the rural community. While the annual Show Day is the premier event of the association, the grounds and facilities are in regular use throughout the year. Equestrians make use of the grounds on a regular basis and it is also used for Polo Cross, Young Farmers, Car Clubs and members of the NZ Motor Caravan Association. Membership of the association provides an opportunity for anyone to become involved in the progress of the show and the showgrounds. For further information email: kaikohe.show@ yahoo.co.nz.

BACK or NECK PAIN? If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain then come along to our stand at the Kaikohe A&P Show at The Showgrounds, Ngawha on January 10th or at the Warkworth A&P Show on January 24th. In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. After over seven years in NZ there are now thousands of people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts that these really do work if you suffer from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want to age healthily, bring this ad along for a free 10 minute treatment. “I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised!” IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT TO EITHER SHOW, PHONE US FOR THE SHOW SPECIAL.
