Also known as ‘cutty grass,’ pampas is an invasive weed from South America which threatens our native toetoe. The weed also poses a threat to forestry and kiwifruit farms because of its aggressive nature and ability to affect ecosystems. Landcare Research is now carrying out further testing at their biocontainment facilities to assess the suitability of the fungus and insects, including whether they will only affect pampas. MPI acting director aquaculture, growth and innovation, Alice MarfellJones says this initiative, supported through the Sustainable Farming Fund, is a worthy investment as the research benefits the primary industries. “We are very aware that pampas is a shared problem, and saw value in committing $335,000 in to the project. The weed affects forestry and kiwifruit growth and it’s important we at MPI play a role in protecting and growing these industries,” said Ms Marfell-Jones.

Landcare Research traced the pampas back to its South American origins in what Science Team Leader Lynley Hayes refers to as a ‘needle in a haystack’ search. “We were quickly able to confirm that New Zealand purple pampas — Cortaderia jubata — comes from Ecuador/Peru. However, finding the origins of common pampas — Cortaderia selloana — was more difficult, but we eventually managed to find an exact genetic match with some plants next to a soccer field in Chile. Surveys in these regions of South America revealed three potential control options worthy of further study — a black smut fungus and two planthopper insects,” said Ms Hayes. “The black smut fungus attacks the pampas flowers, affecting reproduction. The planthopper insects damage the plants’ leaves, and secrete a honeydew that impairs the plants’ ability to effectively photosynthesise.”

Fonterra Australia and Bellamy’s Australia Limited announced plans to enter into a five-year, multimillion dollar strategic agreement to manufacture a range of new baby nutritional powders. Fonterra managing director Oceania Judith Swales says today’s announcement is part of Fonterra’s transformation of its Australian business. “This is our strategy in action for Australia where we focus on the areas we can win in a highly competitive market to deliver the best returns,” said Ms Swales. “We are actively growing our nutritionals business through strategic partnerships and agreements which will see the Darnum nutritionals plant move towards full capacity. “Our Australian business has par ticular ingredients strengths in cheese, whey and nutritionals, complemented by our strong consumer and foodservice businesses; and the announcement with Bellamy’s Australia — one of the fastest growing infant formula companies — reaffirms our strength in nutritionals. “The Darnum plant is a leading nutritionals plant in Fonterra’s global network. Leveraging our Fonterra Research and Development Centre in Palmerston North, the largest dairy innovation centre in the southern hemisphere, we will bring innovation to the Darnum plant and the nutritionals market to capture growing demand. Bellamy’s is one of the fastest growing infant formula companies with

Formula comprises 88 per cent of Bellamy’s sales. “The proposed multimillion dollar strategic agreement will help support the growth of Bellamy’s Organic in Australia and abroad, and builds on our strong current relationship.” “We are also nearing the finalisation of the Darnum joint venture with Beingmate Baby and Child Food Company Ltd following the recent Fonterra managing director Oceania Judith Swales formal approval by Beingmate’s Board and shareholders,” will work to finalise the proposed arrangements by the end of the year, said Ms Swales. Ms Swales said the Co-operative with the agreement commencing had a clear plan to return its Australian in 2016. business to strong and sustainable profitability. Fonterra and Bellamy’s

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

December 2015

THROUGH THE YEARS BY ANN MORGAN

Margaret Pinny was born into jersey cattle farming and inherited stock off her parents as she grew up. She now lives in Waihue and became interested in the stock when she was six-years-old and has been involved with the cows now for 70 years.

I

grew up on a farm in Piopio and used to go to calf clubs and shows. The first calf club I attended was when I was four years old. In later years I organised the Te Kauwhata A and P show and calf club for 20 years and just stopped being involved in calf clubs two years ago. Now I go and make the judges cups of tea,” said Margaret who moved from Te Kauwhata with her husband Rex to go into farming partnership with their daughter Megan and son-in-law Trevor. “Rex and Megan were also jersey breed judges. Unfortunately Rex became ill just after moving here and died that year, leaving us to care for the property.” They also have three sons still living in the Waikato district. “As I am retired now my responsibilities have changed but I still have a lot of time around the farm and when calves

are born I wander over and see which ones I think are good. This year we used a lot of Australian semen and the calves are beautiful and big. With jersey cattle you can run more stock on your property because they are a lighter animal and are easier to handle.” Her grandson Nick and his wife Stephanie are now sharemilking on the farm with the family’s pedigree jersey herd and involves four generations of family members. The farm also consists of land not suitable for dairy and therefore they also run beef. Stock numbers vary. While all jersey bulls and heifers are reared and some additional beef brought in, any surplus stock are sold at the Northern Wairoa jersey sales. Margaret recalls during the 80s the milk price went down to two dollars for milk fat and it has fluctuated ever since she can remember.

“It’s one of those things that seems to bounce back — it does get better. Back then it was milk fat only, now it is also protein that is measured in the milk.” She has seen cowsheds go from four bale walk through to two cows at once and now the big herringbone and rotary sheds that can milk 30–100 cows at a time. “I started life in the King Country with a horse and cart or sled and now there are tractors with 80–100 horsepower, and there are big combine harvesters for maize and other crops. When I was young it was very hard work, often done by hand and now it’s very much a machinery industry. “I know some people look at the vehicles farmers own and think they must be doing really well but farmers need decent vehicles, that’s why you often see them in newer cars. We can’t just pop down to the store, we often have to travel a long way so we need

reliable transport.” Margaret remembers the cream being separated from the milk and collected at the gate by a cream lorry. “The skim milk would go to the farm pigs which would later be sent off for bacon, and the lorry would deliver our groceries back inside the empty cream can. Now tankers collect all of the milk and not many farms have pigs as there is no skim milk because all of the milk product is taken away. “We used a big straw broom and buckets of water to clean down the milking shed. Now we use high pressure hoses or the flooding technique from big drums of water. “Living here is very similar to the King Country. We shifted from a very dry area and find this property better even in the dry season. It’s been a very interesting lifestyle which I have really enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. To think in the last 30 years there have been so many changes to the industry

is incredible. I was a land girl on my dad’s farm including his stud Romney and Southdown sheep and used to help take them to shows. My dad quite often had the best fleece at the winter show. “He would be shearing and throw me one and say ‘put this aside,’ and I was always amazed that it often won — he just knew a good fleece. He was a great farmer and I believe our farm today reflects that,” said Margaret.

with. The mussel seed is called spat and we have three main sources to get this. The first is on seaweed which floats in the water at Ninety Mile beach with spat attached. “It washes up on the beach and collectors gather, sort and send it to us to grow out. We hang weighted fluffy rope in the water and wild spat settles on it and grows at Golden Bay in the South Island. Our third source is from Sanford’s mussel hatchery in Nelson. The spat it is left to grow to 5-7mm and then the juvenile mussels are stripped and thinned out. This is called inter-seeding. “Over the life of the mussel this happens three more times before harvest at 90 — 100mm. The trick to good mussel farming is having all the mussels on the line near the same size. “Our mussel operations are geographically spread from Kaitaia to Stewart Island. There are several operations involving partnerships with Iwi and private growers. Our farms range from two to 2695 hectares. Sanford’s largest farm in Pegasus Bay is still under construction. There are many challenges in the industry including la Nina and el Nino weather patterns. “The weather has a big impact on the upwelling of nutrients for the crops as they are filter feeders. We study this closely and what we are finding is if it’s an el Nino we have strong mussel growth and if we have a la Nina we have slower growth. I am expecting that this season will be a bumper crop as we are going into a strong El Nino. “Another challenge is rainfall. We use a

world class sampling programme that is based on monitoring rainfall and river flows. We are continually testing water quality. “There is a lot of pressure when it rains as our harvesting areas may be temporarily shut due to extensive nutrient runoff from the land which the mussels feed on. When the crops are harvested they are sent to Sanford plants in Havelock and Tauranga. Both factories are capable of processing 18,000 tons per annum. The mussel industry is good for rural communities which don’t traditionally have a lot of job options for local people. The mussels get graded for size, then go through a cooking process where the shell opens slightly and the byssus thread is pulled out by rollers. They then go to the automatic opening machine leaving the half shell with meat. The mussel is frozen and a water glaze is added. It then goes to a weigh machine which sorts to optimum weight for packing. The mussels are then put into the cold store for shipping to distribution centres or customers. “Much of the final product is sold to international markets with the majority going to the United States. The future of our industry is looking great. Seafood is an important contributor to the export sector and aquaculture is a big part of that. Sanford has access to good water space for growing mussels. “Mussels are full of protein and are nutritious. The greenshell species are the only ones that have lyprinol

A

RASH-IONAL BUSINESS

by Ayla Miller

Small out of the way towns are often homes to diamonds in the rough when it comes to locally owned businesses and Ruawai’s Long Flat Bacon Company certainly comes under this category.

S

cott Thirkell and Sasha Clark have owned the business for three years now after moving to Ruawai in the Kaipara from Kerikeri, and they have three children under 10 years old who attend Ruawai Primary School. Scott has a background in homekill and experience in butchering and

farming and has dreams of expanding the business further towards Auckland. “We have the right knowledge to grow the business and I am at the right stage of life to get the business to where we want it,” Scott says. “Ruawai is a small place so I go to a lot of markets all over the place —

Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that are designed for concrete roads. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money. • Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance. When he isn’t working, Scott enjoys spending time with his young family

Scott makes sure the store is ship shape for the regular customers and curious passers-by Whangarei, Paparoa, Puhoi, and Orewa. When I’m not working I try to spend as much time with my children as possible.” The business was established in 2006 by Graham and Sally Taylor who wanted to capture the old-fashioned flavour of bacon. This has shaped how the business has grown and still forms the basis of the butcheries philosophy, which is to provide quality meat with boutique production methods. The butchery has modern standards and combined with their traditional methods for smoking and curing the bacon and hams, and a healthy respect for their food, the company has kept the old-fashioned flavour. Local identity and butcher, Leo Hackett, made the Ruawai butchery famous for more than fifty years with his secret sausage recipe and they still offer this today. Scott says the business these days is known for salami, Christmas hams, and of course, the bacon, but the most rewarding part of his work is making his customers happy. “I really enjoy customer relations and interacting with people. We do have our regulars but there is plenty of room to grow the customer base.” Sasha is in charge of the books, secretarial work and the accounting side of things. “I think we saw the potential in it and together we have the skills and

knowledge to expand the business,” said Scott. “There is a lot of passion that goes into a business like this. We provide good quality products.” Long Flat Bacon Company send their meat to as far away as Vanuatu as well as supplying some customers in the South Island with their Christmas hams. The hams are kept cool in a chiller and transported in a matter of days. Scott comes in at three in the morning on the weekends. It gets busier depending on what time of the year it is but says he is used to it from his early days as a farmer. “It’s just like during calving — you do the hard yards for a short distance and then have a bit of a break.”

He has a general daily routine which includes wiping down all the windows and making sure customers have a good first impression when they walk into the small Ruawai store. Scott then sorts out the orders and makes sausages a couple of times a week. As he has a homekill background, they offer their customers a homekill service as well. He does most of the markets himself. “I take the family to Orewa in the summer. They can go to the beach whilst I’m at the markets. Then afterwards we can do something all together. “I find it very satisfying seeing people enjoying my food and I like receiving feedback. There are always things to learn.”

ADVERTORIAL

Merry Christmas Everybody Holy Toledo! Another year has zoomed past without even a blink of the eye, incredible! That’s how it feels anyway. To me it was one of the most interesting years in agriculture and probably the bumpiest ride ever, all decisions needing to be calculated to the nth degree; with survival in mode. We need to stop what we are doing — commodity markets are a slippery slope. We need to look seriously at natural certified production methods to increase farm efficiency, better returns, a healthier farm and a top quality environment; this is paramount, if we want to survive. There are silver bullet solutions out there that ensure compliance without impacting on productivity and profitability; with environmental sustainable farming offering the best opportunities.

The way forward is probably the way back: when dairy farmers produced all their supplement feed directly from the farm and when stocking rates for dairy was one cow per acre (2.5 cows per hectare). Go online to Lincoln University’s site and look up more milk, less cows; with less cows you will have more grass. The premium price for milk on the planet is for all grass-fed milk, which includes all grass supplements. You don’t need to throw your money away by growing maize. Maize is for chickens — not rumen animals. When it comes to nitrogen, plants have been fixing nitrogen directly out of the atmosphere for millions of years. This source

of nitrogen is ecologically friendly and has no cost factor. The natural forests, jungles and savannahs on our planet, fix their

carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. All producers growing plants or pasture, without a thought, rely on their plants to fix these free minerals directly out of the atmosphere, carbon as carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen which together make up 97.5% of the plants mineral requirements — that’s what you call free natural capital. Combine the atmospheric minerals with the other essential minerals, such as, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, silica, iron sulphur, manganese, boron, copper, zinc, cobalt, molybdenum, selenium and chromium and you have the formula for strong healthy plant growth that transfers onto animals and humans. All life on the planet is dependent upon minerals. These minerals are essentials to our survival. Pest, disease, sickness and weeds all indicate mineral deficiency. The mineral or, minerals missing are extremely difficult to target, but compensated by applying a full complement of the above minerals. With all these essential minerals life functions well — in reality, minerals are your “silver bullet” providing they are in a completely natural form — i.e. not synthetic Agrissentials’ release of minerals to a plant available form is based around the soil micro-organisms. These creatures are the first to dine at the mineral table, converting the minerals into a plant available form, wrapping the minerals in humus, so that they won’t leach from the soil. The plant takes up the minerals from the humus, as they are required. The humus also holds water, from which the plant will draw. The more humus in the soil, the more water retention to help the plants through those dry periods. When the plant takes up the mineral it is instantly recognised at the cellular level, the ultimate level for plant uptake, development and growth. So, we have finally discovered that the silver bullet is contained within a multimineral microbial rich fertiliser namely Rok Solid full spectrum fertiliser. In the spirit of Christmas, Agrissentials have loads of amazing specials to get your soil pumping and things growing. Whether you’re a home gardener, lifestyle block owner, commercial grower or farmer — there’s a deal for you AND some limited edition Christmas packs that make a fantastic Christmas gift for that someone special. Call 0800 THE KEY (0800 843 539) or your local best on earth fertiliser rep Mike Jujnovich (Northland) on 021 669 059 or Angela Young (Far North) on 027 886 3570 to redeem your special Christmas deal today! (Please note that over the Christmas break the office will be closed from the 18th of December and fully operable again on the 5th of January. Urgent calls will be monitored on 0800 THE KEY during this time.) Wishing you health, wealth, happiness and a prosperous 2016 — bring it on! From Team Agrissentials

Boost for log export prices

New Zealand export log prices jumped to a seven-month high in November as demand picked up in China, the country’s largest market.

LOOK OUT FOR YOUR WORK MATES

The average wharf gate price for New Zealand A-grade logs rose to $92 a tonne from $83 a tonne in October, marking the highest level since April, according to AgriHQ’s monthly survey of exporters, forest owners and sawmillers. The AgriHQ Log Price Indicator, which measures log prices weighted by grade, increased to 92.51 from 88.41 last month. Chinese demand picked up to 70,000 cubic metres a day towards the end of October, and about 50,000-60,000 cubic metres a day in November. The pickup in demand comes after log exporters reduced shipments to China following weak market conditions, and has caused inventory levels on Chinese ports to fall to between 2.3-to-2.6 million cubic metres from about three million cubic metres last month and 4.7 million cubic metres in August, AgriHQ said. Some now expected inventories to drop below two million cubic metres. Prices are expected to firm through December,

although the market remains volatile. “The market has the potential to overshoot in its price recovery, in which case prices will need to drop for the market to find the right balance,” she said. “Improved market conditions mean supply to China is likely to increase which would place downward pressure on prices,” said Emma Dent, an analyst at AgriHQ. Lower shipping rates and a favourable New Zealand exchange rate were helping underpin the local export market, she said. Meanwhile, prices for New Zealand domestic logs were steady with pruned logs at $167 a tonne from $164 a tonne last month, and structural logs at $103 a tonne from $105 a tonne. Domestic log processors are struggling to source supply in some regions due to competition from the export market, Dent said. Logs, wood, and wood articles are New Zealand’s third-largest commodity export behind dairy products and meat.

Meanwhile, there is already a shortage of harvesting crews for the summer work program in many of the regions. A number of harvesting suppliers and more importantly skilled staff have exited the industry in the last 6-12 months. The same message goes out to all forest owners which is to start your harvest planning at least three to five years before the trees get to harvest age so harvesting suppliers can plan crew allocation and have a better idea of any forward work programs.

Sweet like chocolate Susan Vize is enjoying running her new business so much, she wishes she’d started sooner. “I love every day that I go to work,” says the owner of the award winning chocolaterie and cafeteria, Chocolate Brown. Susan, who took over the wellestablished, boutique chocolate business in June 2015, reckons Warkworth, north of Auckland, is the perfect location. “We are very lucky to have such a fantastic combination of very loyal local customers, plus we are a popular tourist destination, both nationally and internationally.” Therefore, customers flock to Chocolate Brown Cafeteria, which Susan describes as “Warkworth’s biggest and most successful café.” She attributes that success down to having great food, great coffee, great service and a great atmosphere.

Summer Styles for the Forty Plus Women

“Those four elements are absolutely vital to making our place a truly amazing experience,” she says. “When you visit the Chocolate Brown Cafeteria, we want you to feel as if you are right at home. The cool, shaded verandah in summer and a roaring fire inside in winter, add to the homely atmosphere.” As well, Chocolate Brown produces a range of mouth-watering chocolates from its factory alongside the chocolaterie and cafeteria. Right now, Susan’s focus is on further developing the wholesale, corporate and online retail business. Luckily she has an abundance of skills, thanks to her background in IT and marketing management. “I also spent four years as a consultant to small businesses on business development strategies. Now I’ve combined all the skills and knowledge I’ve gathered thus far and am applying them to Chocolate Brown.”

Never say never Farming is tough, by definition. I know this as I worked alongside farmers as a rural veterinarian for 23 years, helping them deal with all sorts of stuff. I find it really interesting that the same set of circumstances can be almost soul-destroying for one person yet character-building for another. I’ve heard this saying: ‘Two men look through prison bars, one sees mud, the other — stars’. It is so true. We all need goals and a challenge — and tough times and possibly even debt, because facing challenges to work towards a goal is an important ingredient in the recipe of happiness. In fact, I can say the thing I like most about farmers is the strength of spirit and mental toughness that they develop through constantly dealing with adversity. Farmstrong is a new initiative to promote wellbeing for farmers so they are better prepared to run their businesses. The website www.farmstrong.co.nz provides information on how to develop healthy thinking so that farmers can be better equipped for successful farming — no different from the way the All Blacks are trained in healthy thinking to help them win rugby games. There is a section called ‘Learning to be a Healthy Thinker’. It advises us to ‘Catch it, check it and change it’. If you are feeling a bit down, examine your thoughts — is this thought really true, and is it going to help me achieve my goal? For example the thought that ‘I’ll never own my own farm’, is not necessarily helpful or true. ‘Catch it, check it and change it’ to something more rational that will help you work towards your goal. often contain the words ‘never’ or ‘always’. If these words are replaced with ‘maybe’ or ‘what if’, then that can change your whole perspective and allow you to problem solve your way forward. Now, while selling farms as a real estate licencee I enjoy working with successful people who have worked hard to become the owner of a farm. Every day I see evidence of how healthy thought processes lead to successful outcomes. I recommend you have a look at the Farmstrong website — it contains a ton of good stuff, practical skills and resources that will help farmers become better farmers. ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

LIFESTYLE BLOCK SERVICES

Keep children safe

Farms and lifestyle blocks are unique environments where families work, live and play, and it raises unique challenges that other business operators don’t need to consider. With summer here and the school holidays on the way, it is a good time to put safety measures in place. The Ministry of Business and Innovation recommend landowners and operators take time to look around the farm and identify the hazards, particularly those that pose the greatest risk to children. Walk around the property with children and identify the hazards together. Adult supervision is the key. For young children it needs to be close and active and adults need to lead by example. Have safety fences around play areas, animal enclosures, work areas and water spots. Keep doors shut or locked so little ones can’t get anywhere they’re not supposed to. Remove keys from doors and vehicles, and never leave vehicles unattended with the motor running.

There are many hazards children face, some obvious and some not so obvious, for instance animals can be unpredictable, especially if startled or protecting their young and can charge or kick out. Children can also be infected by a number of animal diseases such as leptosporis, ringworm and diarrhoea. Teach them to wash their hands after touching animals. Children also lack the judgement, body weight and strength to operate full-sized farm vehicles like ATVs. They need to understand that tractors can be dangerous. Younger children are most likely to be injured while playing on or near tractors and older children are most likely to be injured as passengers

or while carrying out farm tasks. All farm machinery has the potential to cause harm and should only be operated by adults. All machinery should have appropriate safety guards. Small hands can get caught in things and workshops need to be kept locked. Spare tractor wheels should be tied to a wall or left lying flat so they can’t topple over and crush a child. Have a map of all the water hazards on the property — rivers creeks, troughs, dips, tanks, dams and ponds. Cover tanks and wells with child restraint covers or fill-in any that are unused. Water also poses the risk of burns, especially in the dairy shed where hot water is used at scalding temperatures. Ensure all dangerous chemicals are stored safely and out of the reach of children. Make sure it is safe to reverse any vehicles. The best way to do this is

PREVENT FIRES • Lime & Fertiliser Cartage • Metal Cartage • Conventional Haybaling • Digger Hire • Sawdust • Calf Pen Shavings • Palm Kernel

to walk around the vehicle and ensure children are a safe distance away before starting the engine and always use seat belts and children’s car seats. Older children should not ride farm bikes until they can place both feet firmly on the ground on either side when seated on the bike. They should also be taught the dangers of speeding and uneven ground. Make it a rule for older children to always say where they are going and ensure children know what to do in an emergency, where to go and who to call, and teach them basic first aid. Children do listen, understand, remember, and apply rules over time. But things change — seasonal work, new hazards, environmental changes, getting older, having friends over — farm safety needs to be constantly reviewed and updated.

Check your machinery today. Nests are a major cause of tractor & machinery fires.

Managing summer feed Informed feed supply decisions made in early December can help ensure the herd’s production remains profitable for the remainder of the season. DairyNZ developer Sean McCarthy provides insights and points to new resources that will help you make the best decisions over the next few months to ensure feed supply is managed in an effective way. Ensuring feed supply matches demand, for many, will mean continuing to meet pre-grazing leaf stage and postgrazing residual targets to encourage as much pasture growth as possible. It may also include the use of summer crops, nitrogen — N — fertiliser and supplements where it makes economic sense. Assuming sensible culling and dry off decisions are made to manage feed demand, the focus shifts to supplying high quality, low cost feed. Before culling and dry off decisions can be made, it is important to have the right information. Knowing the average pasture cover and feed on-hand will enable you to determine if a lift in farm cover is required and whether December is a good time to apply N fertiliser to encourage greater growth rates in early summer. N boosted pasture is a valuable feed source, and even if ensiling is required, it will cost less than many supplements. A dry summer will slow pasture growth, so slowing down the round in early December by increasing the number of days in the rotation will help achieve maximum growth during summer and help ensure there is adequate feed ahead of your herd for grazing. It will also allow for grazing of pastures closer to the target three-leaf

stage, therefore capturing the 40-50 percent of the high quality leaf growth from the second to third leaf. The way to increase feed is by a slower rotation, not higher residuals. There is a misconception that leaving higher residuals in December will increase feed availability in summer and help capture moisture. Leaves have a limited lifespan so higher residuals will in fact reduce pasture growth and any remaining high quality feed will decay and not be available later in the summer. Therefore, leaving high residuals in December won’t help fill a feed deficit later on — it will simply result in wasted pasture now and reduced pasture growth and quality in the months ahead. Residuals of 1500–1600kg DM/ha will

‘Time to act’ on water report With the summer farm forecast causing concern across the country, IrrigationNZ, the national body representing the irrigation industry, has called on government to heed the advice of the report of the fourth Land and Water Forum released at the end of November. “The LAWF report has resulted in constructive advice to ministers for the development of freshwater policy. It’s now time for the government to act,” said IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis. “Freshwater is a natural and recurring resource we need to protect, and is

a national asset which needs to be properly and carefully managed to bolster our agricultural-led economy. “This is recognised in the report. There are recommendations for the government to fund and facilitate the development of environmental infrastructure like water storage and wetlands. “Storage means freshwater can be captured for environmental benefits such as managed aquifer recharge

and augmenting rivers in dry seasons. This captured water can also relieve problems of over-allocation and provide efficient water for new users. “In the report, regional and local government are advised to investigate, cofund and help develop this infrastructure on a catchment scale,” he said. This would result in efficiency in water distribution to where it is most needed and it would also allow for allocation to new users. Regarding Iwi rights and interests in water, it is essential that whatever is decided is done quickly but in doing so that we don’t solve one grievance by creating another — that way New Zealand can progress to optimal water management with the necessary community mandates, legislation, systems and implementation methods to make the most of the water we have.” IrrigationNZ continues to roll out its SMART Irrigation training to help farmers improve their water efficiency on-farm while also releasing its first ever annual snapshot of New Zealand’s irrigation sector. It has been estimated that irrigated farms provided a $2.7 billion contribution to New Zealand’s economy, and more than double this in terms of the benefits to the wider community. IrrigationNZ Chairwoman Nicky Hyslop said launching the snapshot cements a great year. “The 2015 year has seen IrrigationNZ step up with its communication activities. We have focussed on sending a message to all that irrigation has a huge role to play in building resilience

Top of the line protection

Water is a top priority in summer and is a blessing when it is available in the right spot at the right time, but a menace when causing rust, electrolysis and electrical problems. When water gets mixed with grass sap, fertiliser, salt or effluent, this is where the fight starts. Water needs to be distributed, sprayed and discarded which involves pumps, electricity and engines, bearings, pins and irrigation systems. These are expensive problems on a farm where time and funds come at a premium. Fire fighting gear, flood protection systems, chillers, water supplies and effluent pumps need long-lasting, cost effective and enviro friendly lubricants and corrosion stoppers as a breakdown of these systems has catastrophic consequences. Northpower, Atlas Cranes, the new Whangarei bridge, the navy’s of the world, the coastguard, and the Black Hawk helicopters in Afghanistan all use

our CorrosionX products to waterproof electrics and electronics plus stop the rust on any metal. CorrosionX is non-flammable and safe to 36,000 volt. Best of all, MPI C11 is approved just as Lanolin, only lasting so much longer, less messy and going a lot further. It is also aviation approved and military specified for 20 years. CorrosionX Marine, heavy duty, and the new grease have no shelf life. They will not gunk up, dry out or evaporate. That guarantees 100 per cent performance of your farm gear in any weather — from scorching hot to freezing cold, from dripping wet to bone dry. It

Fish for the future

Motivated by a love of fishing and a desire to ensure future generations can continue to have the same fishing opportunities, Tony Craig and John Murphy put their heads together to design and create a recreational fishing app that records people’s catch to paint a bigger picture of overall national consumption. these to other fishers in their region as well as the top six in the North and South Island. The app came into existence in 2014 after Tony and a friend had a conversation over a game of golf. “We were having a discussion about technology advances and how it is changing the world and I mentioned that I had an idea that would help considerably in the world. We discussed the two problems that face recreational fishing world wide which is funding and robust data. “After a bit of scoping, we talked to some people, put in some money for the first stage to build the iPhone version first and then the Android and the rest is history.” Tony has a long list of experience in the fisheries industry including working as the business policy manager of Seafood New Zealand. He says the information will only be used by the sector when it engages in fisheries management and allocation forums that are convened by government. Over the last year they have been gathering feedback from users to find out what would enhance the overall

John and Tony with Tony’s granddaughter Jemaia — an early adopter of the app

experience and help them collect better data. “The important thing is to make it as easy for people to use as possible and to give them their own information back which is their fishing diary and their statistics. It can do so much more once the sector realises how powerful it can be. “It’s about getting the message out there and getting people to use technology in a way they understand.”

Fish4all is designed by recreational anglers, for recreational anglers. It enables people to store and share data about their catches. The information is then stored in a database owned and controlled by the recreational fishing sector so better data and information across New Zealand can be gathered to improve fisheries management. Tony says many New Zealanders believe fishing is a birthright but now people are realising that perhaps it is a privilege instead. “The message out to rural New Zealanders is that although you might only go fishing once a year, there are many others out there fishing in their Christmas holidays and it is important that they understand how big that effort is. Once or twice a year is still important for us to see what you are catching. If people download this app before they go to the beach to input the data, it will be really helpful.” The app offers users the chance to log, track and share their catches with photos. It lists their top three species caught by month and year and compares

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

What’s the best surface? There are many publications out there about lameness and how bad tracks and bad animal handling cause lameness, that we regularly get asked the question… ‘What do you think is the best surface material for tracks?’ Even though claims of the above are, in principle, correct, it seems that most people don’t have a clear understanding of what it is about bad tracks and animal handling that increases the prevalence of lameness. Often the explanation goes something like this: ‘When cows stand on stones they get bruising in their hooves and that makes them lame’. If you push cows on tracks and they can’t see where they put their front feet then they encounter more stones causing more bruising and therefore more lameness. When you improve the tracks and you stop pushing cows you do end up with less lameness and so this theory seems very plausible. The problem with this explanation is that it is based on assumption and there is no evidence to support it. I agree that improving tracks and animal handling decreases the newsad-11-2015-FINAL.pdf 1 24/11/15 prevalence of lameness. But what I

am saying is that there is no evidence that the stones are the culprit. If you are interested in doing a hoof trimming course with us I can show evidence for the opposite. So, if it is not the stones on the track that is the problem, then what is it? Well, it has a lot to do with stress. The reason why cows are under more stress on bad tracks is that it takes longer to get to and from the cowshed which means that they spend less time in the paddock doing cow things. When you look at a well fed herd in the paddock, cows are grazing, drinking, socialising or lying down. This is normal, natural behaviour for a cow. When cows are walking on the tracks or standing on the yard they are not showing any of that ‘normal’ behaviour. This means that cows are being forced to take on activities that are not natural to them. This, in itself, is not a problem as 18:39 most cows adapt themselves to that

routine, but, if you force them to do it for a long time it will become a problem. If you have muddy tracks or there are a lot of stones on the track you will find the cow flow a lot slower therefore this increases the time out of the paddock and places more stress on your cows. The added stress of pushing cows will make it even worse. So, when I am asked what surface material I would advise for the tracks I say concrete. Concrete is easy to clean, it doesn’t hold puddles, cows don’t sink into it and it doesn’t need sunshine to dry up. You may think this is a ludicrous suggestion, but some of our clients that have done it love it. I know it is expensive, but in the long run it is probably the cheapest option. If you can find a material that is as hardy as concrete go for it. Just remember — the main aim is to get cows back in the paddock as fast as possible in a stress free manner.

The answer to pest and disease control and fruit quality and shelf life/storability Calcium’s role in plant nutrition is overlooked, costing growers and consumers millions of dollars in fungicide/pesticide use and storage problems, let alone human health complications brought about by the consumption of chemical pesticide and fungicide cocktail combinations and further complicated by low mineral

intakes. We should not confuse the role of important soil amendments such as lime or gypsum with the overwhelming need for water soluble calcium by high value crops. They are both critically important but are two separate issues. Calcium fertilisation of many crops should not be confused with the actual calcium requirements of a crop. For

example, potatoes and apples require 90 per cent of their calcium during budding for potatoes and 4–6 weeks after full blossom for apples. This cannot be achieved by the application of agricultural lime — it does not release anywhere near the calcium requirements for a plant when it requires it. Most times calcium fertilisation is only considered when a deficiency is evident. Classic deficient symptoms are — death of growing tips, abnormal dark foliage, premature shedding of buds and flowers, and weakened stems quite often confused with a potassium deficiency but the problem is a plant available calcium issue. Calcium’s number one role is cell wall strength and thickness, which is critical for strong structure rigidity within the pectin polysaccharide matrix. The rapid uptake can only be supplied by the application of water soluble forms of calcium and timing is everything. Many bacteria and fungi — pathogenic — infect plant tissue by producing enzymes that dissolve the middle lamella, two of these enzymes are polygalacturonases and pectolytic enzymes like pectate trans eliminase. The application of soluble calcium during fertigation reduced fusarium oxysporum activity, which is a fungal pathogen

which causes crown rot in tomatoes, it also severely reduced pythium blight and root rot in grasses and citrus. Nitrogen fertilisers blended with a water soluble form of calcium can achieve an optimum economic yield by reducing the total amount of nitrogen applied. The grower wins financially by reduced nitrogen fertiliser costs and the environment wins with reduction in nitrate leaching into watercourses and underground bore water, who loses, the chemical company’s balance sheet. The surface application of urea requires impeccable timing with rain, it requires 7–9mm of rain within 36– 48 hours of application, or substantial losses of nitrogen occur. We see soils containing 6,000– 10,000 kilogram per hectare of soil exchangeable calcium. When tested by the Ream Soil Test method we only have 700–1,000 kilogram per hectare of water soluble calcium. When growing high yielding crops like maize/sweetcorn we need these test figures at 3,000–4,000kg Ca/ha and for lucerne or alfalfa this needs to be 6,000–8,000kgDm/ha of water soluble calcium — this is why we can grow lucerne on a marine clay when all the so called professional said “it can’t be done”.

Lamb crop at 60-year low

Ross Livestock

Figures compiled in Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s crop report released on December 1 estimated 23.9 million lambs were tailed this spring — the smallest lamb crop since 1953. — by 0.9% — to 18.3kg, as a result of lower stocking rates per hectare. “However, this is not sufficient to offset the reduced number of lambs available and we expect total export lamb production to drop by 7.2%.” Lamb export receipts for 2015–16 are estimated at $2.8 billion, down 4.2% on 2014–15. The lamb crop survey covers 500 commercial sheep and beef farms.

“Breeding ewe numbers were down 4.5% on last year, due to carryover effects of dry conditions in past seasons,” said economist Andrew Burtt, adding that feed supplies were tight leading into winter and fewer hoggets were mated. In some regions, there was also a slight swing towards increasing beef cattle at the expense of sheep. “On the positive side of the ledger, better-than-average climatic conditions during lambing this Spring meant lamb survival was good — the exception being isolated weather events in the North Island.”

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

Over the country, there was a 6.7% drop — or 1.7 million fewer lambs than last year. In all 11.3 million lambs were tailed in the North Island — down 0.7 million on last year but similar to 2013’s tally. In the South Island, 12.6 million lambs were tailed — 1.0 million fewer than last spring, due to decreased ewe numbers, lower lambing percentages and fewer lambing hoggets. Mr Burtt says the average carcase weight is expected to increase slightly

RURAL WHEELS

Unstoppable utility times eight by Andy Bryenton

The trusty off-road bike used to be the last word in tackling mud and harsh terrain. Then it was replaced, briefly by the off road trike, before that evolved into the ATV quad. Recently, the ATV has given rise to the two-seater UTV, in all its farm-ready and sporting variants. But all this time — since the 1960s, to be exact — there’s been another breed of off-roader in the background. It’s one which doesn’t rely on one wheel drive like a bike, or even four like a quad. And it hasn’t evolved into anything so prosaic as a simple dune buggy. Like the shark, it may have been perfect for its own extreme environment from day one. The Argo — named for the

far-travelling adventurers of classical mythology — has been about in one shape or another since 1967. Born of the need to handle every kind of terrain from deserts to swamps, the Argo does away with traditional steering, adopting the same kind of controls as a military tank. That’s the first clue to its intention. The second comes when it runs out of land entirely. Because, like

the big armoured personnel carriers it did its bit to inspire, the Argo doesn’t just wade — it swims. Argo’s latest creation is the culmination of all those years of research and field testing with farmers, hunters, foresters and emergency personnel. The 8x8 750 XTi can carry 450kg on land and across water, with a four stroke, 750cc liquid-cooled v-twin doing the hard work under the hood. Add a towing capacity of over 900 kilos and the massive traction afforded by eight driving wheels, and it’s easy to see why there’s very little that can stop this machine in its tracks. Argo have made the move to modern direct fuel injection, offering both more power — 30hp at the wheels — and better fuel economy. Considering the type of terrain where Argos tend to work, the long distance between fill-ups is going to be very handy. Other small stylistic tweaks — and the addition of the now-obligatory USB output on the dash — round out a

design which is pure Argo. Function is king here, and the form of the whole Argo range is built around offering simply the toughest, most unsinkable, unstickable vehicle on the market. A tough roll cage keeps passengers safe, in a style similar to modern UTVs. If you have rough terrain to tackle — and we’re talking more than just a damp paddock or some paltry mud puddles — then this new 8x8 is the way to handle it in style. After a bash through the rough stuff — and across the wet stuff — in the 750 XTi, conventional four wheel drive may begin to feel a bit like a sad compromise.

Ford, and this shape hearkens back to the Mach 1, though without the ostentatious louvred back window. But is this new offering up to spec when it comes to speed and handling? The answer, in short, is yes. And it’s not the big 5 litre V8 which truly surprises, though a commendable 306kW and 530Nm of torque won’t fail to deliver smiles. It’s the combination of losing that live rear axle in exchange for modern suspension tech, and the light, punchy twin-scroll-turbo EcoBoost variant which is a revelation. Now, I can already hear the V8 purists opine that there’s no replacement for displacement, and if you want a burbling, rumbling

muscle car this is true. It’s just that the EcoBoost option is far away from being watered-down. In fact, it makes the new Mustang two very different cars — one a thunderous homage to a great tradition, the other a glimpse of the future. The EcoBoost’s 233kW is nothing to sneeze at, either, especially as the switch-out lightens the whole car. Really, this is one pony which deserves a test ride. It’s the only way to compare the two very different systems which have been tucked under that rakish bonnet. And unlike watching Star Wars, when the echoes fade out, you’re still left with something beautiful to look at.

One of them — J.J. Abrams’ new Star Wars episode seven — will be released in mid-December. But the other — the new Ford Mustang generation six — is already among us. And Ford have left the world in no doubt that with this car, their global programme has reached a new apogee. Once the very icon of Americana, the ‘pony car’ is a movie star in its own right, to rival the likes of Han Solo. Gone in 60 seconds, for example, elevated the Shelby variant to the status of something to die for. Now, the looks and the performance of that lineage are back on forecourts around the world, this time coming fresh from the factory with the controls on the correct side of the car. We got our first look at the Mustang as part of Ford’s nationwide Blue Oval Roadshow, and its presence is undeniable. With the aggressive grille, long bonnet and classic Mustang stance, hunkered down low over fat tyres — this car would not look out of place on screen with Steve McQueen. That’s a big check for style, then — and a large aesthetic improvement from the brutally squared fifth generation Mustang which polarised critics. Everyone has their favourite classic

Ford and Holden battle it out each year on the hallowed tarmac of the mountain, in a struggle which seems as old as time. The older petrolheads talk in hushed tones to a new generation of the mighty Falcons and Commodores of yesteryear; of the coming of the Valiant Chargers, and the season of the mighty Godzilla Skyline. The thing is, this could be the last year of the great rivalry between the red and blue — at least as we know it. In the 12-hour endurance race which is a curtain raiser to the big day, Nissan’s GT-R blitzed past in the final laps to steal the crown — from a podium made up of an Aston and a Bentley. Audi came fourth. And in the main event, too, the other marques are showing their fangs, with Volvo pipped for a podium place. With Commodore and Falcon now facing big changes, what will 2016 look like? Holden are keeping tight lipped, but in the meantime they are not letting the Commodore go quietly into the twilight. Their ferocious Redline model V8s have been a revelation, spurring arch-rivals FPV to make their own swansong just as manic. Now Holden have released a special edition of their usually tamer, calm and comfy V6, dubbing it the Storm.

The Holden Commodore SV6 Storm ups the ante in the engine department, packing a 210 Kw, 3.6 litre directinjection V6, delivering, interestingly, more power than some of those old V8 ‘commies’ did back in the day. This mill is mated to a six speed transmission, an automatic with active select technology for crisp, rapid shifting. In line with some of that classic Commodore racing pedigree, the Storm features a limited slip diff as well, which may show a little of Holden’s intent. You could certainly tow a lot with the 350Nm of torque on tap, but it’s more likely that you’d like to enjoy seeing what such power can do unleashed on the open road. What’s best about the Storm, though is its price. Following up on a very successful, limited-run Storm edition of the Commodore in 2014, the Holden management decided to make this model even more enticing. So as well as design tweaks such as custom red stitching on the upholstery, fog lights and satnav, the Storm only costs marginally more than its standard V6 counterpart. Many will consider this over the V6 Calais in the lineup.

EDMONDS & MASON

PANEL & PAINT

by Andy Bryenton

Farming these days is a matter of balancing the books as much as it is cultivating the land. Margins can be thin, and savvy operators are always looking for a way to pare down those overheads. In this environment it’s easy to slash the budget for high tech ‘toys’ — but there’s still the necessity for certain modern amenities on the farm. Take the simple matter of getting about — herding livestock, running errands, checking fences and the like. In the current economic climate, investing tens of thousands into a brand new quad or UTV may seem daunting. But less than 2k for a tough-as-nails two wheeler that can do the same job? If it can take the hard knocks, that’s genius. The same philosophy which informs popular utes like the Foton and Great Wall is at work with the Jialing 150, a small, nimble farm bike made with a no-frills approach. Then again, it’s also made by a company which specialised in building military motorbikes for the vast Chinese armed forces, and which then teamed up with Honda in the early 1980s to build the off-road-bike equivalent of the AK47. Able to deploy in harsh terrain, hard to break and easy to maintain, this early Jialing has been changed only slightly to the present day, with the addition of electric start.

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads What the buyer gets for that sub 2k price tag is a 150cc four stroke, single overhead cam purpose built farming bike, geared for mud and rough terrain. Generously sized racks front and back pack on the tools and equipment, while bars protect the engine, chain and grips. Having ridden one of these machines extensively on mud, dirt and sand, I can claim first hand that they are willing and able little bikes — no flat-out speedsters, and definitely not

for the road. But for high-torque, low speed chores on the paddock, they weigh up against competitors three times the price. There was a time when most all farms had a two-wheeler in the shed — a versatile and often mud-caked machine which could be relied upon to fire up first time, even on those dark and damp mornings in winter. Think of the Jialing Farmer 150 as exactly that bike, rebuilt with no fancy upgrades, but ready to work.
