A new family violence policy sets out how the cooperative will aim to create a safe and supportive environment at work, while also enabling team members impacted by family violence to take up to 10 days of additional paid leave per year to attend health appointments, legal proceedings or other activities relating to family violence. “Businesses have a huge role to play in tackling what is one of New Zealand’s biggest social issues,” says Fonterra’s managing director People and Culture Joanne Fair. Every four-and-a-half minutes police are called out to a domestic violencerelated incident. One in three women experience physical and/or sexual violence from a partner in their lifetime, and men may also be victims. “We want to play our part in getting our people the help they need, as the workplace is often a safe place from violence at home. “This initiative is about making family violence OK to talk about within our organisation and ensuring our people know help is readily available if needed,” says Ms Fair. “If we can make a difference in the lives of victims, supporters of victims, and users of family violence who want

to change, then we will also make a difference for their families and the communities they live in. “Careful handling of the first contact from a victim when they seek help is critical so we are grateful for the support of Shine who have advised us on policy and provided workplace support training to some of our employees across the country. “Women’s Refuge have also assisted us with critical information to help everyone know what family violence looks like and how to respond when someone seeks help.” Shine’s Communications Manager Holly Carrington says: “With Fonterra’s size and reach, our DVFREE programme for business has the potential to directly help thousands of Kiwis — and their children — to have safer and better lives. DVFREE provides a structured approach to help employers make workplaces safe and supportive for staff experiencing domestic violence. “If someone working for Fonterra is being abused by their partner, they will now know there is someone at work they can talk to in confidence about their situation, and that they will be supported to get through a difficult time and stay safe at work.”

Annual summer survey to identify kauri dieback

3

Kauri dieback is killing our kauri trees which are threatened with extinction. The disease infects kauri roots and damages the tissues that carry nutrients and water within the tree, basically starving the tree to death. The annual aerial survey will continue the efforts of the Kauri Dieback programme to identify dead or dying kauri trees to help manage and prevent the spread of the disease. This year the Northland survey areas include: Aupouri peninsula, Kaitaia area, Whangarei, Southern Northland and Pouto peninsula. The survey, will take place between December 2017 and March 2018, and also provides valuable data on the overall health of our Northland forests. “Identifying where kauri dieback is in Northland will ensure landowners, tangata whenua and agencies can better manage the disease and stop it spreading further in Northland,” says Biosecurity Manager for Northland Regional Council Kane McElrea. “This information then informs decisions such as which tracks should be upgraded first, or which activity groups need to be worked with and educated in order to reduce the risk of the disease being spread.

“Aerial surveillance is carried out with an aircraft flying in a grid pattern while high-definition stills cameras record every unit of ground. After the flights are made, any stands of kauri that look as though they are diseased are visited by ground crews for further assessment and likely soil tests.” The Kauri Dieback Programme is a collaborative partnership between MPI, which coordinates the programme, and the kaitiaki of those areas where kauri is found – tangata whenua, Department

of Conservation, Waikato Regional Council, Northland Regional Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Auckland Council. If you suspect the presence of kauri dieback, or if you have any questions about the survey, contact the regional council kauri dieback team on 09 470 1200 or 0800 002 004, or email mailroom@nrc.govt.nz More information about the Kauri Dieback Programme can be found on the website: kauridieback.co.nz.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Robin ‘Cookie’ Cooksey grew up in the township of Dargaville and often holidayed at his cousin’s farm at Awakino Point where he learnt the basics of farming from a young age.

U

pon leaving school at 16 he joined the navy for five years before leaving to get married and moving on to a farming career. “The navy was a good experience and then I worked on dry stock farms for 15 years. They didn’t pay very well in those days and I had a growing family down in Pouto so we moved to Kaikohe to work on a Lands and Surveys block, and then to a Maori Trust farm,” says Robin. “At Lands and Survey I was on a horse all day especially during my lambing beat. It was great wandering around on horseback with a dog running beside you. “Mustering sheep and crutching only lasted a few days so we never had the opportunity to get fit like a shearer would. It was simple back then but the

whole 15 years that I was shepherding we only got $20-25 per fat lamb, now they get $70-120.” Robin was into horses and played polo cross but it became expensive so he secured a job on a horse stud in Karaka and was there for nine years. “It was a sheep and beef farm with a thoroughbred horse stud. Before the horses would go to the races we rode them around the farm for six weeks for fitness. “I hadn’t ridden a racehorse before and I asked the owner what the first horse I rode had achieved.” It was the Wrightsons’ three-year-old filly of the year which Robin says was a bit daunting. “I spent the rest of the day looking around the paddock for rabbit holes so I didn’t injure it. That horse

Robin believes ensuring cattle are not sick or stuck in drains is an important part of being a relief milker won another cup and many more races — it was worth half a million dollars. The owner let me open it up across the paddock one day. You could feel the power and understand why it won so many races. “We spent most of our time getting the yearling horses ready. We would handle them as much as possible to get them used to people. They were probably more dangerous than the big horses because they are a bit wild until they calmed down. “At one stage I personally owned seven horses. If you get one, they mostly need grass and a bit of hay, and exercise is important. “They only need oats if they do major work, teeth checks, and their hooves need shoeing every six weeks.” He eventually decided to try dairy farming and moved to the Waikato. “I started as a worker and the next season became a manager so I must

have worked well. We used to feed maize silage but just a taste — we didn’t know the benefits of supplements back then. Things have changed quite a bit.” Robin worked on a hill country farm and he utilised one of the first feed pads. “They are a great invention as you don’t mess up the paddocks and save food wastage,” he says. “Later in life I decided to bring the caravan to Pahi Holiday Park and work in the area as my mum is still in Dargaville. Unfortunately my wife died so I finished the season and started relief milking. “Relief milking is good because you milk the cows and go home. It gives you a bit of pocket money and stops you sitting around doing nothing. The sheds can be quite different with machinery, and each farmer has their own way of doing things. The biggest thing is learning where the paddocks are on each farm. It is important to be reliable and have an understanding of

Robin understands farm management and appreciates the opportunities relief milking brings his way farm management and be useful to the farmers so they can rely on you when they need time out. “When I am wondering around I kick the troughs and ensure no cows are in the drains or sick. You can train your eye and always check more than you need to. If you haven’t milked before, find someone to teach you — it is a

good stepping stone into the industry. If you are good you can get plenty of work. “I have a launch now and go out on the harbour and fish when I want a feed or to relax. “Even for full-time farmers, it is important to get off the farm and have a break. Fishing is just one way to do that.”

December 2017  NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann Morgan Converting to an organic farm is a new challenge Kenny Finlayson and Terri Donaldson are excited about on their Maungaturoto property.

T

he 180 cow herd is at home on the 100ha dairy farm that sits on limestone and clay and is flat to rolling with bush. “We had 200 stock but moving to organic means you need to keep every animal on the farm so we downsized to manage what we have well. You can’t buy feed in because you are organic and everything they eat has to be produced on the farm unless it is approved,” says Kenny Finlayson. Kenny has been farming for more than 25 years and the property has been in his family since 1869.

“His great-grandparents were part of the Waipu lot that came from Nova Scotia. Our house was built in 1912 and is called Whare Puke meaning house on the hill. It overlooks the farm and valley,” says Terri. “We decided to change to organic because it is ethical and the right thing to do. When you look after the land — the land looks after you. “After 25 years it is a new challenge, and although it is costly people are more aware and want traceability with their food. By going organic you have that.” The couple say there is confusion with

free range and organic and people think it is the same but it is not. “Free range and grass fed does not mean organic. Free range farming can still use chemicals but organic has no chemicals at all,” says Kenny. It takes three years to get certified organic and the couple are in year number one of the process. “It is not easy and there is a lot of paperwork and hoops you have to go through and challenges. This year has been very wet and cold, and suddenly we can’t use antibiotics or bring in extra food. We have asked a lot of questions

and done a lot of research and other organic farmers in the area have always been happy to share their experience. “Even simple things like calf meal we can’t buy in, we make our own so last summer we kept and dried our maize cobs and grew sunflowers and stored them. They get put through a chipper with hay and molasses. “Because we have used AgriSea animal health products for many years our animals are already very healthy and we haven’t had many issues. AgriSea is seaweed based and absolutely full of nutrients and minerals.”

Solar panels, controllers, storage batteries

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES December 2017

Kenny Finlayson is now farming the family property originally purchased in 1869

Terri adds AgriSea animal health to the calves’ milk daily and says the company are very supportive. “We use the products because they work and they are a really supportive company — they have sponsored our school pet days for years,” says Terri. “We will look into the soil food after this year when we have our head around the processes of organic. “Every time you want to use something new you need to get approval before use. There are strict guidelines and we cannot assume because it is organic approved we can use it. We fill in material data and safety sheets to get Biogro approval. That goes for everything from teat sprays, to cleaning products and fertilisers. “We have found organic farmers are passionate about what they do, it isn’t just a job — it is in their blood and you are actually looking after yourself at the same time. “We have put in an apple orchard to produce apple cider vinegar for

the animals as part of our long-term plan. It takes three years to get a milk contract but we believe in sustainable diversification and if we don’t get a contract maybe we will do beef, chickens and pigs and use the milk to feed the animals. “Once you are certified you have options — even ecotourism is bustling at the moment and we may put cabins on the farm and do tourism one day. “The future of farming, especially dairy, means considering not having all your eggs in one basket and looking at other ways to complement our lifestyles. I think back to basics, smaller and sustainable may be better — good for the environment and people, and much less stress. “We have a long way to go and are still bright eyed and bushy tailed and we are excited to see what happens. It is a new challenge but we are happy to work toward the goal of knowing that Whare Puke farm will become Whare Puke Organics.”

Kenny and Terri are converting to organic because they believe it is the ethical way to farm

December 2017  NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Decades in dairy genetics by Ann Morgan Don Shaw has been surrounded by dairy cows his entire life and is responsible for bringing thousands of calves into the world in his role as an artificial insemination technician for CRV Ambreed.

A

fourth generation dairy farmer — for the past 62 years the 79-year-old has inseminated an estimated 250,000 cows. At 17 years old he started his artificial breeding training with South Auckland Herd Improvement. “You weren’t supposed to train until you were 18 years old, but I turned 18 by the time the AB season started so I was able to do so” says Don. “It was quite different back then compared to today. Every morning we were picked up by the supervisor and taken to the town milk herds in the Hamilton area. “One of the other trainees in my group was Sir Dryden Spring. He eventually became the chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Board, so I was in

good company.” Dairy herds today can be upwards of 2,000 cows — herds in the mid-1950s were much smaller. “Most weren’t any bigger than 100 to 120 cows. My father had about 90 cows,” says Don. “Visiting smaller farms with three other trainees meant I only had the chance to inseminate one or two cows at each farm. Today they go to a school in a freezing works in Morrinsville and get to inseminate 100 to 120 cows over five days.” He later worked with South Auckland Herd Improvement and then did private work as an independent AI technician before spending more than 40 years working at CRV Ambreed — as a technician and sales consultant. Three years ago he retired from CRV

Ambreed as one of its top-ranking sales consultants. CRV Ambreed National AI manager Cara O’Connor says Don is an institution in the AI industry and is happy to share his knowledge and skills with others. “It’s been a busy but rewarding role. I remember my first year I only sold 275 straws, and by my last year of working there I was selling 30,000,” says Don. “The secret to success is building strong relationships with clients. I was on the phone at night or visited them at least five times a year.” He has seen many changes to the industry over the years. “Health and safety standards are stricter now and the tools of the trade have evolved. I once badly injured my knee thanks to a kick from a cow. It probably wouldn’t happen nowadays as there is a bar behind the cow’s back legs. “We had rubber gloves and used soap to get a lather on them, as a lubricant. Today you have plastic gloves, obstetric lubricant and you use thin, stainless steel pistolettes. The old plastic pipettes we used to use were half as big again. I look back and think, how did I impregnate cows with them? “Frozen semen has become more widely available and gives farmers more choice about herd genetics. When I first started there was little of it. Today there is more focus on breeding worth and the ‘thinking’ farmers want improvement in udders and production — they can choose sires from several cow genetics’ companies. “I think animal evaluation could take more interest in educating farmers on the value of traits other than production. BW isn’t everything. I tend to focus on the New Zealand Merit Index where the traits are part of the index.” He says more women are joining the profession and has advice for others who want to work as an AI technician.

Lifting the spirits of each other

From farming to the bends An afternoon out in the boat to dive for scallops turned into a different type of adventure for Maungaturoto farmer, Logan Diamond.

A fourth generation dairy farmer, Don has inseminated approximately 250,000 cows of different breeds

“Women often make good technicians — they tend to have an empathy with animals, and often have smaller hands and wrists which makes it more comfortable for the cow. “You don’t want to be in a rush; just be quiet, calm and get the job done. You need good hand skills and to be gentle with the cows.” CRV Ambreed has a team of 200 trained and certified AI technicians working across the country. Collectively, they inseminate around 500,000 cows a year and they also offer AI training schools throughout New Zealand.

When he’s not doing AI, Don works as a TOP inspector, sire-proving heifers and inspecting older cows for Jersey NZ members, and consults for several farming clients. Don and his wife Lynne are active in encouraging the next generation into dairy farming, and support youth members of Jersey NZ and set up a scholarship fund for tertiary education in 1992 that is still going. “I like to think I’ve been a giving person, rather than taking. My reward has been seeing people achieve their potential.”

“I was out diving in the Whangarei Harbour at a favourite spot and had been down a few times. On my next dive, I started feeling a bit average but kept going, and before long I wasn’t feeling very good at all,” Logan says. “I must have come up too fast or too many times, and once I was back in the boat that last time, I really felt like it was all closing in on me. Down on the sea bed, I had felt like I was going to vomit and the feeling just got worse. Something definitely wasn’t right. I felt like a bad mix between sick and drunk.” Once back on shore, Logan vomited, but still tried to make it home, where he was found by his wife Zaria, asleep in his ute and still in his wetsuit. Panic kicked in and Zaria stripped him of his wetsuit, dressed him and got him into her car to take him to Whangarei Hospital. “I was panicking but didn’t want to show our two-year-old that, so I just hurried to get him into my car to take him to hospital. I knew it wasn’t good. On arrival, they said a nitrogen bubble might have passed through his brain and by that point I was a trembling mess but holding it together for him and our baby,” Zaria says. “I felt better when they said the rescue helicopter was on its way to collect him and take him to Auckland, as I knew it meant he would be getting help faster. Without that helicopter, I don’t know if he would still be here today for his kids and me.” The Nor thland Rescue Chopper transported him to North Shore Hospital, t h e c o un t r y ’s s p e c i a li s t h o s p i t a l for dealing with the bends . ADVERTORIAL

The truth about plants and nitrogen by John K Morris — CEO of Agrissentials

University of Oregon, Dr J. Fox has found that communication links between plants and nitrogen fixing bacteria are damaged when synthetic nitrogen is used. This leads to less nitrogen fixed naturally, increasing reliance on artificial synthetic urea. The more you use synthetic nitrogen, the more you will need to use synthetic nitrogen. In essence, agro-chemicals are cutting the communication lines between the ‘host plant’ and the ‘soil biology’ — not a good idea; it is essential that plants and biology communicate with each other, that is how the natural system works. Artificial nitrogen sales are increasing every year, but also increasing is the erosion of topsoil and pollution of both farm and environment with synthetic nutrient leaching. It’s amazing that the farmers accept carbon dioxide straight out of the atmosphere for free, hydrogen for free, and oxygen for free, but line up to purchase artificial nitrogen for big money. It doesn’t make sense. Over every hectare on the planet it is estimated that there is approximately 30,000 tonnes of atmospheric nitrogen, completely natural, environmentally sustainable, which is fixed by both plants and micro-organisms and stored within the organic matter of the soil, ready for

plant uptake on request. Why wouldn’t you use this ultimate, free serving system? It’s a money saver. Atoms — it is an astounding notion to consider that atoms are mostly empty space and that the solidity we experience around us is an illusion. When two objects come together — like billiard balls — they don’t actually strike each other, rather the negatively charged fields of the two balls repel each other. When you sit in a chair, you are not actually sitting there, but levitating above it at one angstrom (100 millionth of a centimetre) — your electrons and the chair’s electrons are implacably opposed to any closer intimacy. All living matter is cellular — life cannot arise spontaneously, but must come from existing cells (at Agrissentials we see the future of fertilisers being targeted at the cellular level of plant life, then passing on through to the cellular

level of animals and people). Feed the cells the right frequency and they will do the rest of the job. To make a ‘human being’, the first cell splits to become two, and then two becomes four and after 47 doublings, you have 10,000 trillion cells in your body and are ready to spring forth as a human being. Every one of those cells knows exactly what to do to preserve and nurture you. Each cell carries a copy of the complete genetic code — the instruction manual code for your body — so, it knows how to do not only its job, but every other job in the body too. Every cell in nature is a thing of wonder. Even the simplest cells are far beyond the limits of human ingenuity. When you eat, they extract the nutrients, distribute the energy and carry off the waste — when you drink alcohol, they all get pissed as parrots and fall over. A cell is like a refinery in that it is devoted to natural mineral activity on a grand scale filled with interactions that appear confused and random, but clearly have some system to them. There is activity everywhere and a ceaseless thrum of electricity. You may not feel electrical, but you are. The food we

eat and the oxygen we breathe are combined in the cells into electricity. Compare your genes with any other human beings and on average they will all be about 99.9% the same. That makes us a species. The tiny difference in that remaining 0.1% is what endows us with our own individuality. Here at Agrissentials we are working as close as possible to Mother Nature, focussing fully on the soil, with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, bringing health and vitality to the soil, the plants, the animals and the people. Growing

Tai Tokerau THROUGH EDUCATION

At NorthTec we understand the importance of our region’s primary industries. Forestry, agriculture and horticulture are some of the biggest contributors to our economy, and employment opportunities are waiting for our well-trained students with a great attitude! We prepare you for your next steps in life by providing training that’s developed with input from our local employers and industry representatives. With a huge emphasis on safety, we teach you all the skills and techniques sought by the region’s forestry and farming sectors, providing training on working farms or forests. Our tutors all have a strong background in their industry, and bring passion and knowledge to their teaching to help you develop your own skills. With small class sizes, you’ll benefit from plenty of oneon-one tuition and will also form strong bonds with your fellow students of all ages. Protecting Tai Tokerau’s unique environment and conserving its beauty for future generations is equally important to us. We teach you to understand how to work in industry while respecting the environment. We work with our environmental guardians to deliver high quality education and training based on the needs of Tai Tokerau, to preserve its beauty and uniqueness for generations to come. With a NorthTec qualification, you’ll be ready to help grow our region, safely and prosperously.

HORTICULTURE GRADUATE – Melanie Peters “The practicality of the NorthTec horticulture course was really good training for this work. As well as basic plant handling, we learnt about biological control and integrated pest management, plus the importance of record keeping for work diaries, weather and pests and diseases. We also did a hands-on community project making vegetable beds for a mental health half-way house in Kaitaia. “Although I had a good foundation in horticulture knowledge, my growth since I’ve been in this job is in gaining a better understanding of the commercial side of horticulture. There’s a lot involved in the commercial processes and logistics and I’m enjoying learning about that. “I have recently been introduced to all the stages in the seedling department here so I can coordinate my colleagues in that area. It’s a step up for me and I’m keen to learn more. I’d now like to do further higher education particularly in botany which I’ve become fascinated with since working here.”

DIRECTOR OF LYNWOOD AVOCADO NURSERY – Stephen Wade “Melanie approached us when she had heard that we could be looking for staff. It was immediately apparent from both her personality and her NorthTec course training that she had the drive, was interested in the field, and had basic horticultural knowledge. As well as basic plant handling skills, she knew what a fungus was, she knew about pesticides and the difference between good and bad insects – basic things across horticulture. “She is very calm as well as enthusiastic so is great with our team. Melanie also knows the technical skills and processes involved in the clonal propagation process, and the grading and severing of trees. There’s a subtle language and context that goes with working with plants and some people, like Melanie, have an eye and a feel for it. We’re happy to have her for as long as, and as far as, she wants to be here.”

New blood for Silver Fern Farms

Silver Fern Farms’ Board of Directors has appointed Simon Limmer as its new chief executive, taking over the role from Dean Hamilton in March next year. “The Board is really appreciative of the service Dean has given us over the past three years. His strategic and people leadership has laid a strong foundation for Silver Fern Farms and we are confident Simon will continue that progress,” says co-chair Rob Hewlett. “Simon has an excellent set of skills and experience to continue the strong progress Silver Fern Farms has been making as a leading red meat food company. Dean announced he was stepping down from the role in July, and will stay on in the role until that time to ensure a smooth transition. “The Board is excited by the leadership Simon will bring to Silver Fern Farms. He comes with deep commercial experience in the food, manufacturing and service sectors both here in New Zealand and in several of the key

international markets in which we operate.” Mr Limmer says he is excited to be taking on the leadership of Silver Fern Farms at an important time in its development. “It is a great time to be leading Silver Fern Farms. The company is wellpositioned to add value to New Zealand’s natural grass-fed red meat — there is a consumer trend to natural whole foods, the company has a really good brand, is well capitalised, and has a talented and enthusiastic group of people.” He has significant general management experience developing effective supply chains, in stakeholder relations, and in business development. He has spent the past nine years working for Zespri in a variety of general management roles in New Zealand and in China. Prior to that, he spent 14

Waipu Rock! ‘Waipu Rocks — Concert on the Green’ music festival is planned on the fairway of the Waipu Golf Club on Saturday, January 13, 2018.

The event is to raise funds to see this breathtaking location reach it’s potential as a world class golf course and major drawcard for Northland Tourism. “Featuring music great, Dave Dobbyn, Stellar, Tim & Ra, and the psychedelic stylings of Brendon Thomas and the Vibes — who came third in X Factor NZ 2016, the concert will be held in a natural amphitheatre on the club’s practise fairway with fabulous views over the sea. I think a rock concert and golf club will be a unique mix,” says club captain and concert organiser John Triggs. “We have a great club and course here and our greens are as good as anywhere, but the fairways need quite a bit of work. It is going to cost a lot of money so we thought rather than organising sausage sizzles and other little fundraisers, we would do something big.” The organisers came up with the rock concert idea to coincide with the time of year when there will be lots of visitors to the area. “It is a great venue — Dave Dobbyn is such an iconic figure and we know he loves coming to the North. We think people will be keen to experience this

unique event. We plan to hold concerts for the next five years. “It will be great to have the sun going down over the beautiful Bream Bay while Dave sings ‘Loyal’ to thousands of people all loving the atmosphere and having a great time. That would be magic — so bring along a picnic blanket and settle in for an evening of incredible music and a great summer vibe in a stunning slice of heaven on the Waipu Green.” A wide range of wines will be on offer from Villa Maria, craft beers and local favourite McLeods beer, topped off with fabulous food for sale, from tapas to salads, seafood, ribs and more. There will be no camping on the golf course, but there will be prepaid buses running from Kamo, Onerahi, Whangarei, One Tree Point, Waipu and Mangawhai, and a prepaid shuttle running from Ruakaka and The Caledonian grounds, Waipu. The concert opens at 3.30pm with Dave Dobbyn headlining. It is strictly no BYO food or drinks. Wheelchair area and access is easy on the grounds off the driveway. Tickets for the show cost $95 and can be purchased at www.iticket.co.nz

Avocado soil and leaf analysis by Erica Faber – Orchard Productivity Manager, Just Avocados

Optimum plant growth, performance and production, depends on the balance, combination and concentration of mineral nutrients both available in the soil and in the plant. Plants often face significant challenges in obtaining an adequate supply of these nutrients to meet the demands of general metabolism, growth and production due to many soil nutrient constraints. If your soil and leaf analysis is not reflecting adequate, balanced levels of all the nutrients, it means that plant health, production and profits will be affected. If used properly as a tool, soil and leaf analysis will lead to more efficient and economical use of fertilisers, and excessive or inefficient applications that drive costs up and profits down can be avoided. Always remember — input dollars should be spent where there is the greatest chance for the largest return on investments. Taking the time to dig deeper into your soil and leaf test results will allow you to: • Evaluate the effectiveness of your fertiliser programmes; • Monitor the pH of the soil and the nutritional status of the soil and crop; • Adjust your fertiliser programmes and address any nutritional deficiencies, excesses and imbalances before they adversely affect production; • Meet the crop’s nutritional requirements at critical phenological times in order to support optimal tree performance and maximise yield; • Determine and address soil nutrient

constraints to ensure a balanced supply of essential nutrients for optimum yields; • Make quick, in-season corrections to nutrient deficiencies through foliar applications of specific deficient nutrients; • Evaluate the nutrient retention capacity of the soil and whether you need to improve this to improve the effectiveness of your fertiliser applications, • Correct problems before establishing an orchard. Trying to do corrections after planting is far costlier and time consuming and also affects overall tree establishment, performance and initial yield. In order for analytical results to be meaningful, sampling guidelines should be followed. One of the basic principles of sampling is to return to the same sampling trees or sites from year to year. These trees or sites must be representative of the entire orchard or major portion of the block. This must be based on tree observation, past experience, crop yield, soil type etc. If you need assistance with understanding what your soil and leaf tests results are telling you please contact John Emett, Just Avocados Grower Services john@justavocados.co.nz.

Diplomas reflect community needs Two revised NorthTec qualifications will prove even better at meeting the region’s conservation needs from next year. NorthTec will offer both a Level 5 and Level 6 New Zealand Diploma in Environmental Management. The new qualifications replace the previous programmes delivered, and have come about due to NZQA-led changes to ensure all tertiary qualifications in New Zealand are standardised. “The designing of the new diplomas has enabled the already popular environmental management programmes to be further enhanced, with new papers added,” says Dr Dai Morgan. “The Level 5 diploma has a new paper which focusses on introducing students to biological monitoring techniques. Learning basic scientific and environmental survey methods gives students a great preparation for the workplace. In addition, plant and animal biology are now studied as two separate papers, giving students more valuable time to study each subject. “The Level 6 diploma now includes a new paper on research methods, teaching students the best ways to formulate hypotheses and design field-based experiments and research projects. They will also learn how best to analyse and present data.” As before, the two one-year programmes can be studied separately, or combined with a third year of study to earn students a Bachelor of Applied

Science (Biodiversity Management). This is a Unitec degree which is delivered at NorthTec by NorthTec tutors. “Many NorthTec students from the programme already go on to work at the Department of Conservation, Northland Regional Council and other local groups concerned with environmental management,” says Dr Morgan. “The new qualifications will further enhance their chances of gaining employment in their chosen field, as they

reflect the needs of these organisations, which frequently carry out monitoring and research projects. “Our stakeholders say they like our students because they can hit the ground running. They are not scared about getting out into the bush, and they know what they’re looking at. We also place our Level 6 students with industry for parts of their papers, which helps them to network and prepare for employment.”

WATER MATTERS Dairy sector needs shakeup

Dairy NZ’s strategic vision for the dairy sector has been criticised by Fish & Game, saying it is a decade late and the industry must act sooner to protect the environment and regain public support. The unveiled strategy’s number one pledge is to protect and nurture the environment for future generations, and to lead efforts to improve the health and swim-ability of rivers and streams. “Public patience has finally run right out and the corporate dairy industry is now trying to catch up and rescue its credibility,” says Fish & Game chief executive Martin Taylor. “Dairy NZ is promising to develop a 50 year blueprint for sustainable land use by 2025 but it doesn’t go far enough. This is all too little, too late. The dairy industry has had a decade to come up with a blueprint for sustainable farming

and land use and now the strategy is to wait another eight years to develop one. “The reality is the present dairying model is unsustainable. Kiwis need action now and aren’t prepared to wait until 2025. “Dairy NZ’s plan highlights the fact the industry is now acutely aware it is losing public trust and its social licence to operate.” Clean water was one of the election’s defining issues as voters expressed their anger about declining water quality and the loss of traditional swimming spots because of pollution. “Dairy NZ needs to be much braver

with its strategy and provide better leadership. A good place to start is by accepting a future based on fewer cows, less water use, less nutrient loading, and producing less milk but with more added value. “If they don’t do that, dairy will continue to be unsustainable. Cow numbers have grown astronomically over the last 20 years. Regions like Canterbury and Southland which weren’t traditional dairy areas are now among the biggest, with a combined herd size of over two million animals. “This explosion in intensive farming has had a huge impact on the environment. It takes a thousand litres of water to make one litre of milk and to meet that sort of demand, more and more water is being taken from our waterways and aquifers. “Canterbury is now using two thirds of all New Zealand’s irrigation take. On its own, a single big corporate farm can use the same amount of water as a town does in a year.” The volume of sewage each cow produces also has an impact. “Every day, New Zealand’s more than six million dairy cattle produce the same amount of waste as 90 million

people. It is untreated, so that is another body blow for the environment. “If corporate dairying is to regain public support, it needs to admit its present operating model is unsustainable. The sector has to stop resisting the need to reduce environmental impacts and commit to hard, measurable targets in the next year. “Corporate dairying can only achieve this by working with environment groups, communities and the government to put these in place.”

Monitoring water usage The best way to monitor the amount of water you use on your property is with a water meter. They can detect small leaks and losses and are an effective way to track seasonal and annual consumption. Installing a water meter allows you to record actual water use and identify areas where water can be used more efficiently. There are two main types of water meter available to monitor shed water use; mechanical and electromagnetic. The cost and accuracy varies between these meters. In general mechanical water meters are the cheapest up front however need earlier replacement and have poorer accuracy than the electromagnetic. A basic water meter is a valuable feature of any farm striving for sustainable water use and will help detect where water can be saved and identify water efficiency options. Meters can have an alert system that informs you if water is flowing when it shouldn’t be — allowing quick detection of leaks and speedy repairs. It is good to assign a specific person to monitor the alert devices. These systems can be set up using various methods including a pressure gauge on a line feeding water to the farm. Registering lower than normal is a likely sign water is being lost somewhere in the system. A storage tank and pump provide water down the farm and a pilot light on the pump can serve as a visual alert that the pump is on. If the pump

is running when it shouldn’t it is likely there is a leak and you should look for the cause. A standard spotlight works, but an LED type — visible from a distance and even in daylight — is worth the small extra cost. The ‘click, click’ sound of an in-line dispensing system can alert you that water is running whilst unexpected fluctuations or records that never return to zero on meter readings may also indicate leaks. The right number and placement of isolation valves can ease the task of finding and fixing leaks and shutting off water in an area to assist repair. They can also be used to turn off water to areas not always in use such as the calf shed. Mark isolation valves on your farm map so they can be found if the system needs to be modified. Place the meter in a spot that is convenient to read or attach a data logger, or telemetry unit, which will send the data straight to a computer system and consider how the meter’s location will affect the data collected. Read meters at the same time and day on a regular schedule, and at least once a month read the meter late in the evening and again early the next morning to check for small or unnoticed leaks. Readings can be recorded on

Prepare in advance for drought Every year there are periods of dry weather that can have a disruptive impact on farms and local farming communities. With the warm weather approaching and drought being common in New Zealand, farmers, lifestyle block owners and growers alike should plan in advance to reduce the stress a possible drought can bring. It is important for individuals to be aware of what they can do to prepare for these climatic events, and that resources are available to help with farm management during the drier months including access to New Zealand’s network of charitable Rural Support Trusts that are set up throughout the country. To help plan, NIWA produces Hotspot watch — a weekly update describing soil moisture across the country to help assess whether severely to extremely dry conditions are occurring or are imminent.

Planning is important and now is a good time to revisit the lessons learnt from the past to get through a drought situation if necessary. Remember that the responsibility for ensuring the health and welfare of animals rests with the owner or the person in charge. Early decision making is a key factor of survival and everyone should at least have an informal response plan in their head even if it is as simple as a series of planned steps. If during a drought you decide to quit stock, and then the rain falls, it may be viewed as a wrong choice, but it is the

right one to make at the time, as it is a waste of resources to feed stock and then decide that some have to go. This decision can also open opportunities such as buying in trading stock, taking on grazers, allowing pastures to recover, and improving the performance of the remaining stock. If conditions get tougher, reviews should be more frequent. Some farmers decide that a drought is occurring by identifying a specific indicator such as a drop in spring pasture, or

Don’t throw away water

GIVE WAY TO STARBOARD ON THE WATER.

What has ‘water matters’ got to do with composting toilets? Well, we believe that water really matters. Water is engrained in the Kiwi lifestyle. We take it for granted. Water defines our seasons. For many of us the start of summer is not dictated by the calendar but when we take our first dip in the tide. We are surrounded by the salty version. Our playground. And winter is when we put on our gumboots and jackets. The winter rainfall supplies us with the fresh water that we cook and wash with as individuals and communities. It is a precious asset that is essential for our health and wellbeing. And we pay for it. A considerable portion of the rates we fork out to our local authority is for the maintenance and renewal of a complex system of dams, pipes, pumps and chemical treatment plants that process that water before it gets to our taps. Expensive water indeed. And we push the flush button and consign that gold-plated water to another journey down pipes, pumps and yet another chemical treatment plant before it gets re-assigned to nature. Each one of us on average flushes away 6,500 litres of treated water per annum. That’s around 35,000 litres each year for a family of five, according to Auckland Watercare. Consider the benefits of a composting toilet. It uses NO water. And because it maintains the separation of liquids and

• Water pump sales & service solids (we do the separation thing quite naturally) both of those elements can be returned to the natural environment as an advantageous contribution. It is only when the liquids and solids are combined that we get the toxic mix. Individually, each benefits the soil (solids) and our plants (liquids). And yes — water does matter — let us save it.

A passion for health by Ann Morgan

Roberta Kaio is passionate about working in mental health, especially in rural areas, and promotes working within a holistic framework. Roberta is of Ngati Kahu ki Whangaroa and Ngapuhi Nui Tonu descent and works as a primary mental health coordinator for a mobile nursing team with Te Hiku Hauora and is the recipient of the Rural Women New Zealand Access Community Health scholarship. “I am grateful to receive the scholarship and will use it towards my Masters of Nursing,” says Roberta. “After living in Auckland for 22 years, my husband, children and I shifted to the Far North to reconnect with our whanau and community. We now have a better life balance with time for fishing, being outdoors gathering kai, and going to the beach together. “I started studying later in life while on a single parent benefit. As a single mother with two children, knowing I had to do something better for myself and for my children I became particularly passionate about supporting people with mental health issues and those that experience abuse. “People living in rural communities have different challenges but they still have the right to appropriate supports and access to resources and services.

“I believe no matter what you do — if you are a farmer, nurse, teacher, truck driver or shop worker, or on a benefit, no one needs to be afraid to access or ask for help. You can either go through your GP, or health and social service.” “Everyone goes through stress but if stress is not managed well, to the point where a person/family is having difficulty trying to function on a daily basis, they need support. “They have a better awareness once they understand what they are experiencing. Sometimes they can’t name what they feel because they are overwhelmed, but being given the opportunity to be heard may be the beginning of getting back on track.” She says studying has been very interesting, and it is enlightening because mental health can affect anyone. “I travel across the rural Far North and get a great deal of satisfaction from making a difference in the community. I enjoy being part of people’s journey in a positive way.” Roberta progressed her nursing career working in Community Mental Health teams in the three different

Auckland DHBs, as well as with the Mason clinic and nongovernmental agencies. RWNZ and Access are pleased to play a part in helping support Roberta’s journey towards delivering crucial health services to those in rural communities. RWNZ national president Fiona Gower says communitybased rural health services are essential for people living in remote areas. “It is heartening that health professionals like Roberta are passionate about working in regions such as the Far North, and undertaking further study to improve professional knowledge and experience for provision of quality rural health services.”

FORESTRY

From the clouds to forests by Paul Campbell

Air New Zealand has announced an agreement with the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry for Primary Industries in the coming year to explore the establishment of a private afforestation scheme, providing funding to landowners to plant trees in return for the carbon benefits this will create. Building on the success of MPI’s existing Afforestation Grant Scheme, Air New Zealand is working with government to scope a complementary private afforestation fund, with the airline to engage landowners to plant up to 15,000 hectares of new native and exotic trees.

1.5M please

If the fund goes ahead, Air New Zealand intends to offset some of the emissions from its domestic operations with credits generated by the new forestry. It hopes planting will commence in the winter of 2018. MPI Director-General Martyn Dunne says the ministry is well-placed to be involved with this initiative. “MPI has significant expertise and experience in forestry and forestryrelated investment. We’re proud to be working with Air New Zealand and the Ministry for the Environment to scope this important initiative which could have far-reaching environmental and economic benefits,” says Mr Dunne. In related news, MPI is taking a hard line on arriving air passengers who fail to declare items that could bring pests or diseases into New Zealand. So far this year, officers have issued more than 9,100 biosecurity infringements and given 1,135 warnings to air passengers for failing

to follow strict biosecurity rules. Last year, officers issued 9,704 fines in total, compared with 6,102 in 2015 and 4,851 in 2014. “The stats show biosecurity fines increased by more than 50% between 2014 and 2016. With the busy summer period yet to start, we are expecting to see another increase this year,” said MPI passenger manager Craig Hughes. “The rise is partly due to the increased numbers of visitors, but also to the tough stance we’re taking on people that put New Zealand at risk. We’re now more likely to issue a fine than give a warning. “Travellers should be aware that failing to declare because you forgot, were tired from travelling, or did not know the rules is not enough to avoid a fine. “The $400 fines are a stern reminder to air passengers who unintentionally fail to declare biosecurity risk goods such as fresh fruit. Where there is

Martyn Dunne, MPI Director-General

deliberate intent involved, passengers can face prosecution or be refused entry into New Zealand. “The message is very simple for international travellers — declare or dispose of anything that could have biosecurity risk before you enter the country.”

READY TO HARVEST THAT FOREST YOU HAVE BEEN NURTURING FOR 25 YEARS? Don’t be persuaded to harvest now without full independent forestry advice. Be sure to get full value for your crop. We want you to have a positive and profitable experience so that you will plant a new crop and ensure your children reap the benefits in another 30 years. Forme Consulting Group is a long established forestry consulting business and we continually hear stories of disaffected forest owners who feel they haven’t received full value for their forest crop at harvest and don’t bother to establish a new crop. To get the job done thoroughly requires good planning of engineering, inventory, marketing options and a fair valuation, steps that are far too often overlooked by owners who don’t have sufficient knowledge to maximise value of their harvest. Forme has no affiliations with log buyers, log marketing companies, logging contractors or agents. We do not trade logs or lumber so we can independently advise on harvest planning and marketing options that are available to you — the forest owner, to maximise your returns. Overseas investment welcomed Offshore investment in forestry that brings genuine benefits to New Zealand’s economy and its environment will be welcomed by the government. Forestry Minister Shane Jones says he is pleased with the inclusion of a Forestry Directive in the new Ministerial Directive Letter issued to the Overseas Investment Office, which sets out a policy approach to overseas investment in sensitive New Zealand assets. “The inclusion of a specific directive for forestry recognises its importance to the economy and regional communities,” he said. “As part of the coalition agreement, this government has committed to an ambitious tree planting programme that will require a partnership between the Crown and the sector itself. High-quality overseas investment can certainly help us achieve this goal. “Forestry, and the processing of forest products, are significant sources of employment in our regions and we want to build on that to get more people into a sustainable workforce. “I’ve heard first-hand from the industry the value of good overseas investment and the Forestry Directive recognises there is a role for overseas investors to play. However, we want to encourage value-added wood processing

to generate jobs and other benefits for our regions. “The new directive for forestry directs the Overseas Investment Office to place high importance on increased processing of primary products and the advancement of the government’s policies when assessing applications for consent. “It also emphasises that ministers expect the Overseas Investment Office to impose conditions on consent where appropriate — for example, a requirement for the overseas investor to enter into a supply arrangement with a local processor.” The letter recognises that conditions imposed on forest land may need to be for longer periods given the often long-term nature of these investments. “Forestry has an important role to play in many of the government’s priority areas — enhancing regional development, improving water quality, reducing carbon emissions and creating jobs — and I’m looking forward to seeing the sector prosper in the coming years,” Mr Jones said.

HUNTING, FISHING & OUTDOORS Check out the regulations Across the country with the summer season upon us there will be many heading for the water to ‘catch the big one’, whilst others will be ‘heading for the bush’ to hunt the wild boar or deer for festive dinners, barbecues and celebrations. New Zealand is known to be one of the world’s great fishing and hunting countries, and it is important to be aware of local regulations regarding hunting seasons, catch limits, licencing laws and fishing methods. If you are fishing or hunting, make sure you check the weather forecast and give someone responsible the location you intend to go to and a time you expect to be home. Ensure you have a basic first aid kit and fully charged cellphone, an emergency locator beacon and GPS in case of emergency. Many lakes, rivers, and country streams offer opportunities to fish for brown and rainbow trout. Most waters are in the public domain and easily accessed via public right of way and the Queen’s Chain whilst others can usually be visited through landowner permission.

Fishing in New Zealand is administered by local Fish & Game Councils. Each region has a section on the website that will keep you up to date with local news, regulations, fishing licence agents and more. Take a moment to visit the local section of this website for the area you are headed as you need a current Sports Fishing Licence for all waters. If you are out on a boat, no matter where you go, ensure you have a correct size life jacket for every person on board. Make sure that you have enough fuel and a charged battery. Now is a good time to join the coast guard in case you need help out on the water. Whilst hunting, make sure everyone is aware of the rules and gun safety, and remember to plan accordingly as the terrain and conditions in New Zealand

Record lambing percentages

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

A record lambing percentage underpins a lift in lamb numbers, according to Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Lamb Crop 2017 report. Research by B+LNZ’s Economic Service estimates the number of lambs tailed in spring 2017 was 23.7 million head, up 1.9 per cent (436,000 head) on the previous spring. The average ewe lambing percentage for 2017 was 127.2, up 4.4 percentage points on last year and up 6.4 percentage points on the 10-year average (2008-09 to 2017-18) of 120.8 per cent. This means 127 lambs were born per hundred ewes compared with an average of 121 over the last 10 years. For spring 2017, a one percentage point change in the New Zealand ewe lambing percentage is equivalent to 178,000 lambs. Andrew Burtt, chief economist of B+LNZ’s Economic Service, says the record lambing percentage and more lambs from hoggets offset fewer breeding ewes. “The report provides further evidence of sheep and beef farmers doing more with less. “North Island lamb numbers were a major factor behind the overall lift in the New Zealand lamb crop with growth of 4.9 per cent (551,000 head) to 11.7 million head. The average ewe lambing percentage for 2017 was 128.0, up 8.6 percentage points on last year. “This was a record high, and was due to good climatic conditions and ewe condition at both mating and lambing for most regions. “After autumn and winter, conditions were generally good but wet, lamb growth rates were lower than normal due to a lack of sunshine, cool damp

weather and more lambs. This has had a negative impact on lamb growth. “On a positive note, there were no adverse weather events during lambing.” In the East Coast and TaranakiManawatu, bearings and subsequent losses negatively impacted the lambing result. According to the survey, the number of breeding ewes declined 1.9 per cent to 17.8 million at July 1, 2017. “The most significant decrease was in Taranaki-Manawatu (-3.6 per cent) in response to strong mutton prices and culling of old ewes to take advantage of strong prices.” The number of lambs available for export processing in 2017-18 at 19.27 million head is similar to last season’s 19.25 million head (+0.1 per cent).

The tonnage of lamb produced is expected to decrease slightly (-0.2 per cent) to a lower average carcass weight, which offsets an increase in total number processed. B+LNZ Economic Service’s Lamb Crop survey is drawn from its Sheep and Beef Farm Survey, which covers a statistically representative sample of over 500 commercial sheep and beef farms.

Every farmer is at risk when it comes to pests and diseases and putting biosecurity measures in place will help keep your farm healthy. or flocks, source from a single farm with a sound herd or flock health programme, and get an Animal Status Declaration from the seller and a health certificate from a vet. Quarantine new stock for at least two weeks as they need a proper health assessment and to recover from transport stress or illness. It is important to inspect boundary fences regularly and repair as needed as stray stock can spread disease, and wild or feral animals can introduce new pests to your farm. Be aware that sharing bulls or rams of unknown health status (and similar practices) can also easily transmit disease. Purchase feed or feed ingredients from a seller that can verify its safe origin. Routinely and thoroughly clean and disinfect anything that comes into contact with your livestock or birds and don’t feed off the ground. Design and position bowls and troughs to prevent faecal contamination, and clean and sanitise regularly. Prompting quad bike ban Recent quad bike accidents causing serious injuries and expensive helicopter evacuations have reinforced the need for a prohibition on the use of quad bikes by primary industries services company OSPRI. From the first day of 2018, OSPRI contractors engaged in TBfree programme pest control and animal health testing work will be encouraged to opt for less dangerous forms of transport, as they will not be permitted to operate or ride on a quad bike. “We want our workers to go home safely every day, and our focus is on reducing the potential for death or serious injury,” says OSPRI chief executive Michelle Edge. “Quad bikes were involved in more than a quarter of all work-related farm deaths in recent years, with five quad deaths in 2016. “Earlier this year an OSPRI worker was killed in a quad bike accident while working on a farm. For us, that’s one too many. “We had a long-term harmreduction strategy in place that was recognised as industry-leading, and our measures indicated that quad-bike incidents and fleet had been steadily decreasing. Yet we were not able to change the fundamental design of the quad, monitor its use, or provide adequate protection for our workers following an accidental loss of control.” In its work to eradicate TB from New

Zealand’s wildlife and farmed animals, OSPRI manages possum control and pest management work over 5.5 million hectares of New Zealand each year, undertakes almost 3.5 million TB tests and has eradicated TB from possums across 1.83 million hectares since 2011. “Each year our people spend more than 300,000 hours in the field, often in remote and difficult terrain. Getting that work done safely and efficiently is important to us, so providing for an informed decision was a major undertaking,” says OSPRI Health and Safety lead James Knapp. “We recognise the usefulness of quad bikes, and understand the risk involved in change with any vehicle, but opting for safer alternatives to quad bikes was the only way to minimise this risk.” OSPRI engaged service providers, reviewed all available research and worked in a consultative process to introduce these changes and enable time for those affected to adapt. The company helps protect and enhance the reputation of New Zealand’s primary industries. It manages the NAIT and TBfree programmes. For more information visit ospri.co.nz

Uncommon sense POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys? Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

Mycoplasma bovis — is this a cause? There is some big picture information in which I believe farming itself may be indirectly connected to the initial cause of this disease. My own experience connected to other biological scientists and specialist vets specifically working on this disease in Europe have led to this theory. The following are a list of basic observations I have collected: • Dairy farm effluent is generally either anaerobic or aerobic; • Symptoms of anaerobic ponds are crusted and have an effluent pH below 7. The thicker the crust, the lower the pH; • Symptoms of an aerobic pond show lesser crust with a pH of the effluent above 7. The higher the pH over 7 the clearer the pond is of crust and sludge; • Both these bacteria types have exclusive competition, so as the conditions change further away from pH 7, either way, the bacteria which enjoy those conditions dominate; • Chemicals used in dairy farm cleaning, particularly chlorine, kill aerobic bacteria; • Good biology beneficial to animal health is generally associated with aerobic bacteria;

• Bad and pathogenic disease causing biology is generally associated with anaerobic bacteria; • Effluent, good or bad, is spread on pasture; • This feed, whether directly or after harvesting is fed to cattle; • Clostridia, Botulism, Mycoplasma bovis are all anaerobic bacteria; • Clostridia is generally present when anaerobic effluent is present in feed; • A symptom of cattle with clostridia is the inability for the animal to suck water in the normal way. They lick at it instead; • Nutrients from the rumen need water to transport around the body past the rumen; • With the inability to physically drink adequate water, the animal effectively starves after the rumen; • The animal is unable to fight disease; • Mycoplasma bovis, which is always

present takes advantage and becomes prevalent; • Mycoplasma bovis is generally present and associated with botulism and clostridia, • Testing for clostridia and botulism will, if present, confirm the origin of the Mycoplasma Bovis. If this information checks out then we can treat the disease, manage it and prevent it in the future. My vet colleague in Denmark stated that, after the death of hundreds of cows in Germany, anaerobic effluent is not irrigated to pasture anymore. Of course, MPI have already made their decision and they seem to think differently — killing cows will definitely fix the symptom. Virtual practice for driving success by Andy Bryenton

With top titles in the world of automotive gaming storming the Christmas gift wish lists, it’s little surprise that young Kiwi car enthusiasts know every twist and turn of tracks like Bathurst and the Nurburgring. But can this technology be taken down a gear from the world of racing to the world of daily driving? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’ from the ACC, who have recently launched a virtual driving simulator of their own. Rather than debuting the massive horsepower and empty tarmac of games such as Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo, this VR sim is designed to build practical driving skills for learners in real life. Because here’s the truth — while young Kiwi drivers are great at tests on paper, easily remembering the technical rules of the road, many are daunted by real practical tests behind the wheel. It’s a high pressure situation, often described as more frightening than academic exams, and the new virtual programme seeks to remedy this. “This is truly a world-first in driver education,” said ACC Road Injury Prevention Manager, Simon Gianotti. ACC research says that the most difficult group of drivers to reach are males aged 18 and 19, and they’re also some of the most at risk of serious injury. “We spoke to hundreds of young Kiwis and we know that many of them feel daunted by practical driving tests. We also know drivers who are better at spotting hazards are safer drivers.” The VR programme is designed to work with a headset which accommodates

many popular brands of mobile smartphones — there’s no need to own an expensive PS4 or PC with a dedicated virtual reality interface. Running on Apple and Android, the DriveVR immersive programme puts you behind the wheel of a test car in a typical Kiwi suburb. You’re marked for such points as window and mirror checks, handling traffic, moving through intersections and more. While nothing can replace reallife practise, this is an innovative step in the right direction, allowing young learners a chance to brush up on their skills anytime, any place, without having a sometimes anxious mum or dad in the passenger seat beside them. That confidence is sure to come through when the real driving test is sat, and, it’s ACC’s hope, translates into a more skilled new class of motorists on our roads. Visit the ACC’s website to download a free copy.

Learner drivers can now access extra practise in the virtual world before test time

Transformation games u by Andy Bryenton

When they first said perhaps a decade ago, that the era of the four door sedan was drawing to a close, people laughed. As the hot hatch began to be slowly replaced with the micro-crossover SUV, disbelief was the order of the day. As in fashion and art, the auto world carries a sea-anchor of memories and pre-suppositions. But the hour is at hand. Proof that the landscape has definitely shifted. No, we don’t mean the end of production for the Commodore

and Falcon. Take a look at the current range from Nissan. The people who brought us the Maxima, that consummate big sedan, the Pulsar, available as a hot hatch with a bonnet scoop that could swallow medium sized animals, and ancestrally machines like the Sunny and the 120Y have a very different offering on the forecourt for 2017. It breaks down like this. Perhaps the single best value for money supercar-thrashing sports machine on four wheels — the GT-R. Under that, a coupe which builds on a history stretching back to the Fairlady Z, and which would make some folks second-guess a Porsche. And afterwards — it’s sports utilities all the way through.

There’s some very good ones, at that. The Juke may not be everyone’s stylistic cup of tea, but the crossover market is all about pop art style. Then we have the best-selling Qashqai, the X-Trail, the Pathfinder and the big Patrol as daddy of the family. The Navara ute finishes off a lineup that has no hot hatch, no sedan — and feels like there’s really nothing missing. The shift has happened, we’re in the 21st century, and the car DNA has split. Understanding this has allowed Nissan to create a range that caters to modern tastes with a spectrum of closely gradated SUVs for every niche, and left their car division free to fly

into new realms of lateral Gs and tyre smoke wizardry. Yes, the 370Z is good fun. In New Zealand it comes in only one option, but that’s because you don’t put tomato sauce on a perfectly crafted slice of sushi. But the GT-R is better than good. It’s transcended the hooligan past of the Skyline which went before it, in the same way Dodge’s Viper transcended their range of huge pickup trucks. If a clean split between the SUVs the public desire and the car as kinetic art and science is needed to make this happen, let it happen. In this case, the results have certainly justified the means and the method.

There’s always a compromise to be made when choosing the transmission of your truck. Do you need the performance and control of a manual, or the ease of an auto? Ideally, the answer is both and with Isuzu AMT, you can have it all.

Izusu AMT is a fully automated manual transmission, so you get the performance of a manual, but with two-pedal operation. There’s no clutch pedal in an AMT, so you can focus on what’s in front of you rather than worry about making gear changes. You can even move between manual and auto mode, giving you the ability to initiate the shifts yourself, or simply leave it in ‘drive’.

Return of the lion by Andy Bryenton

There are few icons of the antipodean roads as easily recognized as the Holden Commodore. Successive generations have been branded in to the Kiwi and Aussie psyche — well, if you’re not a Ford fan — and have carried most of us to everything from workdays to holidays, weddings to funerals.

IT’S NOT A TARGET

ALL NEW TO NEW ZEALAND

American made zero turn mower All new level of performance, durability and design at a great price

0800 38 44 50

Now the icon faces a step change that’s critical to the success of the re-positioned Holden brand. From a downunder manufacturer to an integrated sales brand, Holden still represents the whole formidable global reach and might of the General Motors corporation. But it’s important psychologically that the next generation Commodore carries the torch, and the badge, like its ancestors. That’s why, while the latest offering from Holden is in fact largely an Opel Insignia, made by GM’s German engineers, it has also been put through 100,000 kilometers and more of tests and trials in the big red land over the ditch. Packed with technology and promising a smooth, refined ride, the 2018 Commodore will inevitably be seen by some as a watering down of the brash, V8 powered brute which Kiwis have come to love. But talk emissions, fuel prices, economy and a quieter, more relaxing drive, and the scales tip into balance. Holden may have ruled out an eight-pot mill or even a turbo-charged six for the 2018 Commodore, but a top of the range model has been thrown

into the mix, with a V6 delivering 230 kilowatts — that’s 308 horsepower. This same model will boast all wheel drive and a nine speed automatic box for smooth power delivery. Interestingly, the ‘Twinster’ all wheel drive system has been featured here before — under Ford’s spicy Focus RS. Spy photos have broken cover of a station wagon in the range, which will please those who are not swayed by the SUV argument. Overall, the 2018 Commodore looks the business, with sleek lines and

an aggressive stance — all the more reason, opine the octane-heads, that it deserves a little love from, say, GM’s Corvette engine works in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Many models also switch to a frontdrive platform, anathema to those greedy for tyresmoke. Still, it’s a sign of changing times. A refined Holden Commodore, crafted in Europe and garnished with technology and silky silence rather than hellfire and brimstone, may be a far better thing than the die-hards can imagine.
