If you or your business holds the private information of other people or organisations, then from December 1, the bar will be lifted on what you need to do to keep that information safe. It is to prevent a person from experiencing ‘serious harm’ like loss, damage or disadvantage from their information being exposed. The Privacy Commissioner has a simple message. If you collect personal information then you need to keep it safe and treat it with care. Serious privacy breaches will also need to be reported to the commission and to those impacted. Failure to do this could result in a fine of up to $10,000. Details on what keeping the information of others safe means, along with further details of a privacy breach can be found on the Privacy Commissioner’s website. While there are many ways privacy breaches can occur, one to be particularly vigilant of at this time of the year are cyber attacks. CERT NZ, a government agency tasked with improving cybersecurity awareness, is encouraging businesses to shore up their e-commerce website security with Kiwis heading online to do their Christmas shopping. Cyber attackers won’t just be looking at online shoppers, but also weakness in businesses as well, including those across the rural sector. “Although a farm might not strike you as one of the more impacted businesses compared to a doctors’ surgery or a law firm holding on to personal information, farming businesses aren’t exempt. In fact, like most businesses, farmers are holding onto more information than ever before”, says FMG’s manager Advice Services, Stephen Cantwell. “Farmers typically hold on to employee information such as bank account details, medical records, criminal record checks or migration information. All of

these could be used to cause serious harm to affected people and may need to be reported to the commissioner if there is a privacy breach resulting from a cyber attack. “If you are holding the information of others, now is a good time to check you’re cyber secure. Getting you and your staff up to speed or carrying out a refresher on cybersecurity awareness for your business is key, and it doesn’t need to be complex. “Simple considerations such as strong passwords and not using this on multiple sites is one example. Implementing two-factor authentication to strengthen logging into your systems is another,” says Mr Cantwell. More cybersecurity advice and support can be found at fmg.co.nz/ cyber or cert.govt.nz/. Regenerative farming projects The Ministry for Primary Industries is calling for proposals for projects that will investigate regenerative farming practices. Funding for successful proposals is available through MPI’s Sustainable Food & Fibre Futures co-investment fund. The fund aims to have projects underway by mid-2021. “There is increasing interest from farmers and the wider community about regenerative agricultural practices, but definitions for regenerative agriculture can vary dramatically,” says MPI’s director investment programmes, Steve Penno. “We are looking to define what regenerative agriculture means from a New Zealand perspective, and develop a sound evidence base to test and confirm what works in our soils, climates and farming systems.” MPI’s chief science adviser, Dr John Roche, says broadly speaking, MPI sees regenerative farming as a set of practices that, in isolation or collectively, may result in improved outcomes for our productive land, freshwater and marine environments, our climate, our animals, and for the people that grow and consume our food and fibre products. “Regenerative agriculture is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ activity with prescribed inputs and outputs. The farmers I have spoken with do not want it defined so tightly,” says Dr Roche. “Some of the practices New Zealand farmers are already using could be considered regenerative. By determining which farming practices have a positive

impact on environmental sustainability and human health and wellbeing in the New Zealand context, we will be able to confidently share these regenerative practices widely with farmers. “Regenerative agriculture also has the potential to help our food and fibres sector to produce higher-value products with even stronger environmental credentials. An important part of these projects will be turning the findings into practical information for farmer, to help them adopt methods that are shown to work.” Mr Penno says the Primary Sector Council’s Fit for a Better World vision and MPI’s Fit for a Better World — Accelerating our Economic Potential roadmap recognises the importance of Steve Penno, MPI’s director investment programmes Te Taiao (care for our natural world) and the role regenerative retention. We are excited about what systems could play in transitioning to the future may hold in the regenerative a more sustainable future for our food agriculture space, and we encourage and fibres sector. anyone who thinks their idea might be “Through funding new projects, we eligible to get in touch.” want to enable a number of outcomes For more information, go to mpi.govt. such as increasing the resilience of our nz/funding-rural-support. production systems to climate impacts, reducing their environmental footprint, increasing plant health and productivity, and improving water-use efficiency and

Diverse growing systems by Ann van Engelen Christine Moginie is an artist who teaches biodynamic gardening and art therapy as a way to help people enhance their lives.

“B

iodynamic plants are grown in what is termed living organic soil, which provides a quality of health and nutrition not possible with chemical fertilisers or hydroponic growing,” says Christine. “Biodynamic gardeners and farmers aspire to generate their own fertility through composting, integrating animals, cover cropping, crop rotation, and applying the biodynamic preparations. That includes horn manure 500, horn silica 501, barrel compost, and the herbal compost preparations made from yarrow, chamomile, nettle, oak bark, dandelion, valerian and equisetum. “Biodynamic gardening and farming biological-dynamics regenerate and enlivens the microbial activity in the

soil to connect the plants with their archetypal form and colour. It builds the sugars, starches and proteins, through photosynthesis in the best possible way. “People think filling cow horns with cow manure and burying the horns in the ground from autumn to spring transforms into fantastic humus is odd. Horn manure 500 helps sequester carbon and increases terroir and nutritional value. Horn silica buried in the ground through spring and summer enhances sweetness, sugars, flavour and together also creates beautiful, rich, enlivened soil. “Personally I think using chemicals such as glyphosate to ripen grains, and destroy so-called weeds, grass, insect life and ultimately, poison the

food we consume to be lacking in common sense, and more odd than biodynamic farming. “I am a practising artist, and also help people overcome personal challenges they may have, through both art therapy and learning the art of biodynamic gardening. In my Conversations in Colour Artistic Therapy course, I work with fairytales, Processoriented Psychology and a person’s life experiences. Currently, I offer a 12-week Fairytale Life Myth course to people, who ultimately write and paint/draw their own fairy tale.” It is like writing a biography and investigating on all levels, what your beliefs are. “By the end of the course, you are in a position to choose if you are happy with your current beliefs, or want to review and change them.” The therapy is also Rudolf Steiner based and is an extension of the art of healing through knowledge combining the spiritual with science. “I did the Rudolf Steiner course in anthroposophy, teacher training, and adult education in Sydney, Australia during 1983/84 to understand myself, life, the universe, and how to support people to help themselves. I have completed multiple art courses, training in counselling and artistic therapy. We don’t put people in boxes. We discuss

what is happening in a person’s life, and then they paint or draw pictures, which draws out their feelings. It is interesting for clients to see what they create and discuss what it means for them. “I have been involved with organics, permaculture, regenerative gardening and BD for over 35 years. I am not a farmer, but biodynamic gardening is also good for home gardens, food forests and community gardens. “It is seen as a conscious way of working with nature by building life forces to a garden or farm. “This is different to just organic or permaculture as it uses biodynamic preparations, and avoids all pesticides, depending on maintaining healthy soil life through compost, rather than chemical fertiliser. Biodynamic compost is unique, and a fundamental component of the method by recycling animal manures and organic wastes on the farm or garden. It stabilises nitrogen, and builds soil humus and enhances soil health. “This way of gardening/farming also ties in with the Maori Maramataka calendar and planting by the moon. There is a lot of interest with indigenous and regenerative farming practices both here and in Australia at present. “Studies have proven that gardening and working with the soil helps us to relax because it increases the serotonin

ADVOCATING FARM SAFETY by Ann van Engelen Chris and Karren Biddles have run Te Atarangi Angus stud for more than 38 years, turning their 1,000-hectare property into a successful breeding operation.

C

hris prides himself on his safety practices, but one day in 2018, when he was tired, the fatigue meant he made one bad decision. Chris is now an advocate for ensuring farmers understand the dangers of fatigue on the farm and the importance of supporting the Rescue Helicopter Services. “Farmers everywhere need to be aware of the danger of fatigue and also the importance of supporting our emergency helicopters,” says Chris.

“Farmers mostly live remotely and to get to the hospital quickly when needed is a very important aspect of survival. I stayed in hospital for three weeks and had six weeks with the external metalwork and two weeks in plaster. I then wore a moon boot and was confined to a wheelchair. I underwent intense physiotherapy on my shoulder and ankle to improve mobility.” Chris recently had his seventh surgery. “My friends and family were helpful but didn’t

feel sorry for me. They gave me the lectures that I deserved and encouraged me to do things for myself. I refused to allow myself any down days as that would have been a slippery slope. “I am amazed at the number of farmers I have met who have shared similar stories. The thing that absolutely shocks me is so many people have told me how they rolled their quad as if it doesn’t matter. People have got to wake up. It’s not funny, even if you walk away from it. We have got to not make such dumb decisions. I sincerely hope others will learn from what has happened to me. “Ten years ago, I attended a seminar while on an Angus tour. A guy contracted to ACC had completed a three-month study with friends driving quads. I took home several messages from that event, including how hard on your back riding a quad is and the need to walk as much as possible in between riding. The biggest message I took home was that at 2pm you would make a decision on your quad that you would not make at 8am. “I utilised that information. However, in this case, I was just so exhausted that my brain did not allow me to question the unintended decision. We now include people’s state of mind in our farm team meetings hoping to avoid future accidents. I do not believe that quads are dangerous, but the decisions that we make on them can be incredibly dangerous. I am incredibly lucky that I can walk again, albeit not as well as before, but it could so easily have been a very different outcome. “If you are overworking, you need to take time out and sit down with a cup of coffee and ask yourself, ‘If I keep doing everything the way I am, am I putting myself and other people at risk? Do I need to slow down?’ “When I was in the hospital, the farm ran into water problems, and I was sitting on the phone telling them what they needed to do. I thought, what would they do right now if I wasn’t here.” Chris recommends others join Farmstrong, a rural wellbeing programme that helps farming families live well to farm well. “Tiredness played a major role in the quad bike accident that nearly cost

me my life. I have introduced a raft of changes into my farming operation, including reducing our working hours. We have an extra person on staff, and we discuss people’s physical and mental state. We simply don’t have the long days that we used to have. “Thanks to the Northland Rescue Helicopter service, I got the help I needed extremely quickly. Without them, precious minutes would have been wasted. It is the fourth time the helicopter has been on our farm, but this is the first accident. “Twelve years ago, a guy doing work experience hit his head on a boat on the weekend and came to work. He drove over a bump and got concerned, so St John rang the chopper. “Another time a worker’s husband was doing some contract fencing for us, and she thought he was having a heart attack and again the helicopter came. That turned out to be a serious case of pleurisy. Four years ago my son-in-law got an insect sting, and the chopper turned up when he had 45 minutes left to live. I am the one that made a stupid decision, and that’s the thing, the Rescue Helicopter made a massive difference to my recovery. “I still love the challenge of farming, and I want to continue well into my 70s, but I need to work out how to do it physically.

December 2020

After a major farming accident, Chris advocates ensuring people living in rural communities support the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service

“We have since fitted our quads with Lifeguard protectors that are manufactured in Dargaville, and some people recommend personal locator beacons for the body.

“I was incredibly lucky to survive. I guess, someone, somewhere thought, ‘this guy hasn’t annoyed enough people in his life yet, we need him to hang around a bit longer’.”

A WORLD RECORD SET BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

New Zealand air force and Northland volunteer firefighter, 39-yearold Simon Trye set a Guinness World Record at the recent Kerikeri Half Marathon while raising money for the KidsCan charity.

D

ressed in his full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus during the event, Simon’s target was $1,000. However, he raised more than $16,000 to help children have access to basic needs. “I work for the Royal New Zealand Air Force at Whenuapai as a firefighter, and am a volunteer firefighter in Kerikeri, where I live when I am not on shift,” says Simon. “I was born in New Plymouth and became a driver for the New Zealand Army. One experience was being posted to East Timor in 2002. I drove troops to destinations, delivered stores and whatever else was needed at the time.

“When I left the army, I joined the fire service as paid staff in Auckland for eight years. I then had a break before an old army colleague suggested I join the air force as a firefighter. “I went along and had a look and thought, why not. We do all sorts at the airfield so they can continue flying. We also respond to fires in the local area. Some people I know went to help with the wildfires in Australia. That was hard work as firefighting is different over there. There are different fuels, and the fires are more volatile, bigger and nastier. “My wife Kelly and I used to live on a lifestyle block with our children, but

we moved back into town as we didn’t have time for the block. I then joined the Kerikeri Fire Brigade to help the community using my experience. We also attend rural fires in the area. “With summer coming I encourage anyone that wants to light a fire to go to the Check It’s Alright website before lighting, including burn holes. Even a controlled fire can get out of control, and we need to call in backup, this can include helicopters. “We jump on the truck no matter what, but it does take people away from work and is very costly. If we can avoid call-outs simply by checking it is OK to light a fire, that is a good thing. “I came up with the idea to set a world record after watching a video of a US firefighter in full gear unsuccessful in reaching the Guinness World Record target of 3 hours 30 minutes by six minutes. I thought I could try, as well. I contacted Guinness, who agreed to award the record for the first time if I could complete the half-marathon in less than 3 hours 30 minutes. “When I told Kelly I wanted to set a world record by running a half marathon while wearing my full firefighting kit and breathing from the tank she laughed but wasn’t surprised.” The couple has been together since they were 15 years old and Kelly says Simon has always liked a challenge. “If someone said, ‘No one can do that’ he will give it a good shot just to make sure,” says Kelly. Simon supported KidsCan as they provide warm meals, footwear, jackets and other essentials to children in need. His first attempt was at the Auckland Half Marathon, where he ran with 14,000 people from around the country. “A lot of people ran for KidsCan in the Auckland event including Ben Sinnamon. Ben ran barefoot to draw attention to the number of children he sees without shoes through his work in low decile schools.” Simon missed the record by 36 seconds because his support crew was delayed in the traffic and he had to wait for them to change his oxygen tank. He then accepted an offer by Sport Northland to attempt the record in the Kerikeri Half Marathon, and he achieved the world record in 3 hours 22 minutes.

ADVERTORIAL

Moisture management critical by Erica Faber — Technical Manager, Just Avocados

It has become really evident this season the impact a dry spring, summer and autumn has on our crops. The high amount of small-sized fruit seen in the current avocado harvest is just one of the impacts of a lack of soil moisture through our critical fruit set period — October to February. Even though New Zealand has quite a high rainfall, it does tend to be drier during fruit set. Having a wellmanaged irrigation system is therefore; an important consideration for those wanting to maximise their production. Drought stress impacts not only fruit size but also production volumes due to higher fruitlet drop. It also has a negative impact on the strength of spring flush, which is important for providing resources to the rapidly sizing fruit, protection from sun exposure, and is next year’s fruiting wood. Not pushing enough spring flush will therefore result in lower subsequent yields. If you are relying heavily on a solid fertiliser programme and have low soil moisture, the tree can’t take up the nutrients it needs to support fruit set, spring flush and the building of reserves to support the tree through winter. As your tree’s reserves become depleted through winter, leaf health suffers. By the time flowering and fruit set comes around again, your tree is already under stress, and flowering, fruit set and spring flush are impacted. Once the tree’s reserves start to be impacted you are getting into a cycle

which could take a few seasons to correct. If you are thinking of installing irrigation, you should use an irrigation engineer or adviser to set up the plan based on an accurate understanding of water constraints, different irrigation zones required, what the end goal is for the size and density of your trees, as well as any plans for future plantings. It’s best to start with where you want to end in terms of your irrigation system. It can be difficult to cut and paste on to an existing system. As a rough guide for planning water requirements; newly planted trees normally require 30 to 50 litres of water a week depending on the microclimate of your orchard. As the trees grow so will their water requirements and your system needs to be built for this growth. For high density trees where the canopy is kept small, each tree will use about 175 litres a week. For a larger canopy, bigger spacings or more mature trees, you are looking at 240 to 400 litres a week depending on canopy size and crop load. An irrigation system is only as good as the set-up, monitoring of the soil moisture levels, scheduling of adequate

WATER MATTERS Stock key to quality project by Paul Campbell

A joint three-year programme to improve water quality through a combination of stock exclusion fencing, riparian planting and land management advice in four of Whangarei’s key urban river catchments will begin soon. The approximately $500,000 Whangarei Urban Awa project is a collaboration between the Northland Regional Council and the Ministry for the Environment targeting water quality in the Waiarohia, Lower Hatea, Kirikiri and Raumanga catchments. “Fencing stock out of waterways and planting riparian margins helps improve water quality by reducing potentially harmful nutrients and bacteria, while also cutting sediment from erosion caused by stock damage to stream banks,” says Councillor Jack Craw. As part of the new project, he says eligible landowners will qualify for an 80 per cent subsidy for the work required, provided they pay the remaining 20 per cent upfront. The funding comes from the government’s Jobs for Nature funding package, so all the fencing and planting must be done by contractors. “We’re currently scoping potentially suitable properties in all four catchments and expect to start writing to eligible landowners.” Andy McCall, who’s leading the Urban Awa project, says property eligibility will be determined according to existing land

management practices, size, the length of riparian margin on the property and possibly slope. Councillor Craw says the new programme comes hard on the heels of a similar three-year and three-monthlong initiative targeting landowners with properties upstream of the iconic Whangarei Falls, which came to an end in September. Landowners whose properties covered more than one hectare of grassed land, and which had a mapped waterway on them, had ultimately been eligible for funding through the recentlyended Otuihau-upper Hatea water quality project. Thirty-nine landowners had been actively involved in the project, receiving more than $350,000 funding for combinations of fencing, troughs and planting. Mr McCall says collectively; there had been around 20km of streamside fencing completed, about 21,000 new plants in the ground and 41 stock troughs installed. “Whitebait Connection also ran multiple public planting events over

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

by Paul Campbell

Underground water lines on rural properties are subject to breaks and leakage, and a leaking water line can lose a massive amount of water if it’s not repaired promptly, about 14,000 litres a day, for example, through a hole the size of a small nail. With a water meter, it’s easy to do an overnight check for problems. Just read the meter before going to bed, then first thing in the morning. The difference should be minimal. Watching for leaks if you don’t have a meter is a little more difficult. The obvious first step is to watch for wet spots on dry ground, there could be water soaking the ground from the line below, or for pasture areas that grow more quickly than others. Sometimes you can hear the water rushing out of the pipe, so keep an ear to the ground! So keeping an eye out, and that ear to the ground can make a real difference. Getting the water to you; it’s not cheap and it’s not easy! We drink it, cook with it, shower under it, or bathe in it. We use it to wash our dishes, clothes and cars. Access to fresh, clean and plentiful drinking water is a cornerstone of modern society. If you’re on town supply, it’s easy to take water for granted. For the vast majority of rural residents, rainwater is the key to household use, with irrigation coming from streams and creeks and perhaps aquifers. So

An underground water leak can be very obvious

maintenance is vital. DairyNZ has some good advice. • Identify problem areas and mark locations of weak spots on a farm map • Gradually upgrade older sections to help prevent water loss • Replace ill-fitting connections to decrease the risk of leaks • Bring the problem areas to the attention of everyone working on the farm Water lines that are near the surface, run under races or over drains are at particular risk of damage.

• Bury the lines deeper to protect them • If renewing or replacing lines, bury them alongside a fence to give added protection • To prevent problems where water lines must go under races, place them inside a larger rigid pipe for protection • Where lines cross drains, strap them securely to the bottom side of a pipe or post • Bring these water lines to the attention of everyone working on the farm

Savings on the dairy front

Summer is soon to be upon us, and as usual, rural thoughts turn to water usage, whether the weather will be kind or not, and of course, new regulations that have many people looking askance at the government rules effective from September this year. Water is a very valuable resource, and a lot is used in the milking shed. DairyNZ advises that efficient processes for milk cooling, vat wash and yard hosing can add up to significant savings. The primary milk cooling system should use about two to three times as much water for the volume of milk cooled. If there is a continuous flow of water when milk is coming through the cooler intermittently, more water is being used than necessary. To cut this water use a solenoid valve can be installed at the inlet to the cooler and linked to the milk pump, or a variable flow drive so water and milk flow match. Use correct flow rates through the plate cooler — two to three litres to every one litre of milk. Increasing water volume does not decrease water temperature. Ensure the plate cooler is serviced regularly and has adequate pumps and water storage to function efficiently. Cleaning and improving the efficiency of plate cooling will require the services of a technician who can align the plate’s spacings correctly. Ensure all refill tanks and cylinders have an automatic shut-off to avoid overflows. Toilet cisterns or trough floats have been used as proven refill and shut-off options.

The well-managed milking shed can save water

Improving yard washing efficiency is another way to improve the bottom line on the farm ledger. On warm, sunny days, pre-wet the yard with a hose or sprinkler to help prevent dung from sticking. Use a scraper or a chain inside an old yard hose on the backing gate to break up dung before hosing and wash the yard after each milking. Hose the yard with high water volume under low pressure so you are pushing effluent not spraying it around and maybe include a timer setting on the yard washdown pump. Set a time standard for washdown and

train staff to achieve it. Flood wash with green water recycled from the effluent pond. There are strict compliance requirements for this practice under the New Zealand Food Safety Authority’s Code of Practice for the Design and Operation of Farm Dairies (NZCP1). If you are recycling green water, get advice from your dairy company representative to ensure you are compliant with terms and conditions of supply.

New technology on show by Paul Campbell

Educating landowners about different types of smart water use by showcasing innovative irrigation technologies is a programme underway in Kaipara with two demonstration sites now being developed. The Kaipara District Council has approved the Kaipara Water projects, which will serve as real-life working examples of the best ways to irrigate high-value horticultural crops. Kaipara Water is part of Kaipara KickStart, led by the council and funded by the Provincial Growth Fund to the tune of $740,000. The scheme will have input from Think Water Northland. Direct access to practical examples, expert advice and local knowledge, will provide information and education for all of the Kaipara community in water, crop and irrigation solutions. The first demonstration site is on iwi land at Maunganui Bluff north of Dargaville. The council is working with Te Roroa to showcase irrigation that can be easily scaled up or down, depending on what crops are being watered. The site includes an in-ground irrigation system managed remotely via a web application to deliver water and fertiliser to vegetable crops in precise amounts. First crops on this site include watermelon, squash and sweetcorn. Water supply is from a farm creek, captured in a tank and gravity fed to the demonstration site. Demonstration site two is in Te Kopuru where a centre

pivot irrigator is being installed, which has a 242-metre span and will irrigate roughly 10 hectares. First crops include sorghum, maize and sweetcorn. Water will be gradually taken from a nearby creek under an existing resource consent and stored in a pond that will be built as part of the project. The Te Kopuru site is also located within the future water storage scheme area being managed by Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust. The teams from both projects are working closely on the interlinked projects, sharing guidance on water infrastructure solutions and what they learn from their involvement. As well as regular community events and guided site visits, a time-lapse web camera will be set up to capture crop growth and site development. As well as the set-up costs, the funding covers the management and maintenance of the sites for their lifetime. There were multiple applications from landowners wanting to be involved in the project, and the project applied strict criteria for evaluating potential sites. Among other things, sites had to have existing access to a consistent water supply, and landowners had to be willing and able to host visitors on their

Irrigation will be key to food production

land. Landowners will not be paid for their participation. Project Manager for Kaipara Water and Kaipara Kai, Diane Miller, is looking forward to seeing the projects in action so that everyone across Kaipara can learn from real-life working examples. “The information and data gained from these two demonstration sites will enrich research already available from Kaipara Kai and being used through the Kai Hub work.” General manager of Te Roroa Development Group, Snow Tane, is excited about the potential of the sites to provide much-needed skills to iwi as well as the wider community.

“The sites will directly benefit our iwi, through education, new skills and creating jobs.” Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith believes the demonstration sites will be immeasurably valuable to better understand how to use precious water resources. “Smart and innovative use of our water resources is critical for our community wellbeing and for our economy. “These demo sites are huge oppor tunities to learn about new irrigation technologies and how they can be used across Kaipara, from Mangawhai to Maunganui Bluff.”

Awanui flood works underway The start of a third construction season is underway for the Awanui flood scheme with just above $3 million expected to be spent over the next several months. scheduled for 2021–2022 and another $5 million, which should mark the completion of the project, for the year after that. “The 20/21 construction schedule will involve $3,050,000 of works. These include earthworks for southern spillways, for the Lower Whangatane Spillway and at Allen Bell Park, construction of the ‘Milky Way’ floodwall near the SH1 Waikuruki Bridge, scour protection at Church Rd and various streambank planting and revegetation.” Much of the Awanui scheme was built about a century ago, and until recent years the NRC’s attention had been on much-needed maintenance and more immediate repairs. “The upgrade programme is designed to help future-proof the scheme, including predicted climate change impacts, as well as deliver a considerably higher level of protection for Kaitaia and surrounding areas. “Flooding is Northland’s most common natural hazard, and floods will likely get more intense as climate change continues. That will increase the risk to communities in flood-prone areas and to critical infrastructure like

The upgrade overall is now expected to be finished years ahead of schedule. “The council is part-way through a planned eight-year, $15 million upgrade originally expected to have been carried out in stages until 2027,” says Northland Regional Council’s Te Hiku representative, Colin ‘Toss’ Kitchen. “A very welcome $12.5 million grant, from the government as part of its Covid-19 recovery response package, the bulk of it destined for the Awanui scheme, means the upgrade should now be complete in just three more years instead of the six earlier envisaged.” Until now, 70 per cent of the upgrade has been funded by ratepayers Northland-wide via a regional flood infrastructure rate and the balance funded locally through the targeted Awanui River Management Rate. “As well as dramatically shortening the time needed to carry out the upgrade, the government funding would also lessen much of the associated burden on the NRC’s ratepayers. “Last construction season we did about $1.1 million of work at Awanui. We have just over $3 million planned for the new work season. $4 million is

large flood in urban Kaitaia could cause tens of millions of dollars in damage and potentially put lives at risk. The upgrade is designed to protect urban Kaitaia in a ‘once in a century’ type flood and a one in 20-year event in surrounding rural areas.

‘Silver dollar’ a sound investment by Andy Bryenton

They call it the ‘silver dollar’; the disposable income of retired folks keen to make the most of their years in the sunshine. It’s a growing economic segment for savvy businesses, as a variety of factors give more leverage than ever to a demographic hailed as the ‘new teenagers’. Tongue-in-cheek though it may be, this comparison is apt. When post-war social trends, newly-found free time and full employment gave teens disposable income, and an extended tenure in study

or at home, a whole new set of industries exploded around catering to them, not least the record industry and fashion. Now that same bulge in the demographic graph has come to retirement age. It’s

not just that they’re savvy buyers after a lifetime of negotiating advertising and marketing, either. Older customers have other advantages aside from the fact that they are not constrained to afterwork shopping hours. Statistics taken by consumer research companies indicate that older customers spend more time deciding on the right product. Once they find a brand, they trust, they are more loyal than any other demographic. While older customers tend to research more, they also network more. It turns out that companies booking for that solid-gold word of mouth recommendation should go for the above 65s. They’re more likely to

talk about their good experiences, and there’s a knock-on effect up the family tree. A good feeling is engendered among children and grandchildren for companies who provide superior service to older generations. REST HOME AND VILLAGE

This Christmas the console wars are big news again, with the most recent conflict in a nearly three-decade-long stoush erupting between Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox. The difference in 2020 is that it’s not just teenage boys who want to find one of these under the tree.

established over twenty years ago by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust Inc (MCCT) to serve the Maungaturoto District. Originally set up as a sixteen-bed Maungaturoto Rest Home, the complex has evolved alongside a residential area adjacent to the rest home which offers eleven rental units. Fourteen ‘own your own’ units have been added over time. A medical centre, operated by Coast to Coast Health, provides convenient onsite care for all residents.

Massively multiplayer and competitive online games often come with their own communities, where age is not a factor, and neither is distance. Of course, there’s also the satisfaction of beating the grandchildren at Call of Duty or Super Mario Party as well.

DENTURE CARE

A survey this year by the American Association for Retired Persons (equivalent to our Grey Power) took a peek at how older folks were dealing with the isolation and boredom of Covidrelated lockdowns. The survey, which included 3,737 people aged 50 or older, found that 47 per cent of respondents reported playing video games every day. The average respondent spent five hours every week playing video games on tablets, phones, game consoles or computers. Drilling down into why the older generation has embraced what has been seen as a toy for teens for many years revealed that this statistic should not be too much of a surprise. The AARP concluded that there might be as many as 50 million American retirees who are into games, ranging from online scrabble through to immerse simulations like Forza Motorsport. Is it any real surprise that the reallife hot rodders of the 1960s are now enjoying virtual races around the track at Bathurst or Silverstone against their friends? Many studies have proven that playing games boosts neural function and can stave off the preconditions for

Te Uru Rakau is moving ahead with the next stage of research into creating a New Zealand biofuels industry, following a successful first stage. “The Wood Fibre Futures project earlier this year identified viable woodbased alternatives to high carbon emitting products such as transport fuel, concrete, steel and coal,” says director, Sector Investments Jason Wilson. “Having identified the options, we are now looking to accelerate to stage two of the project, which will be to build business cases for attracting international investors to New Zealand. “There is considerable interest in biofuels and biomass energy from organisations such as Air New Zealand and Fonterra. We are now putting out a tender, seeking an organisation with extensive international contacts and experience that can develop compelling business cases for investing

in the biofuels and solid fuels sector in New Zealand.” These business cases are expected to be completed by mid-2021. It will include a focus on wood-based products, which will provide a large source of residues that can be used to produce three priority products identified in stage one: • biocrude oil • liquid biofuels (such as sustainable aviation fuel) • solid fuels such as wood pellets “We have a huge amount of pine in New Zealand that can be used to create these fuels. However, we need to attract investment and prove that there is both the demand and a viable supply, and that is what we are aiming to do by developing these business cases. “The growing demand for alternatives to fossil fuels has the potential to transform the forestry sector into a provider of biofuels, bioenergy and a range of renewable bioproducts alongside more traditional wood products. The government is committed to moving New Zealand to a low carbon

future, and forestry has a major role to play in that future. Biofuels will also have the added benefit of supporting regional development with biofuel manufacturing centres being in the same areas where forestry is prevalent. “We are already seeing sizable investment in wood pellets to replace coal use in New Zealand, and this will only increase as the domestic carbon price rises. “In North America and Europe, government policies targeting transport emissions are beginning to catalyse investment in biofuels, which also have the ability to benefit New Zealand economically, environmentally and create employment in our regions.” Te Uru Rakau is leading this work as part of the Forestry and Wood Processing Industry Transformation Plan, which is one of six transformation projects given priority by the government. The other five are Construction (through the Construction Sector Accord), Agritech, Advanced Manufacturing, Food and Beverage and Digital Technologies.

A united front

Fishing trips in comfort and style

Federated Farmers and Fish & Game have agreed to work together more closely to identify areas of collaboration. “The two organisations acknowledge they have a history of struggling to appreciate each other’s point of view. High-level board discussions are now underway and are leading the way forward to a more productive relationship,” says Federated Farmers president Andrew Hoggard. “Many of our members are also members of Fish & Game. Fishermen and farmers are very similar people. We both love the outdoors and likely have more in common than we do in difference. “It is pleasing that we have been able to come together and discuss those areas of shared interest and concern and think about ways in which we can work on those areas of difference.” One area of cooperation highlighted very early on in discussions is working together around the issue of access to farmland for hunting and fishing purposes. “One of the first things we will look at is providing more assistance to Fish & Game for ensuring the right information is given to fisherman and hunters. So that farm property rights, biosecurity and health and safety requirements are understood.” Feds working more closely with Fish & Game will require some farmers and growers to put aside the dislike and distrust they have felt towards the organisation and its members. “There comes a time where you need to draw a line in the past and move forward,” Andrew says. “We are not breaking out the marshmallows, lighting the campfire,

A year of highs and lows

December 2020

23

by Chris Penk, MP for Kaipara ki Mahurangi

When the Word of the Year is decided for 2020, by whoever decides these things, I suspect that ‘unprecedented’ will be a top contender. This year has certainly had its highs and lows, with a good many lessons along the way. It doesn’t seem like that long ago we were hit with last summer’s drought and attendant water shortages. Then, of course, we were hit by the perfect storm that was Covid-19. Reflecting on 2020, I can think of several things that made the year at least somewhat positive, as well as positively unique. First, community camaraderie, particularly in our rural communities; the events of 2020 were an eyeopening testament to neighbourly love around New Zealand. Armies of volunteers assisted those in need throughout lockdown, and we shared our recommitment to supporting local businesses. Second, our essential workers. That is not just an acknowledgement but rather a huge expression of gratitude, especially to those who never stopped producing what our nation needs to consume to keep going, not to mention those who receive our export produce. Like most Kiwis, I will never forget the hard work you put in that kept New Zealand running. Finally, the gift of democracy that we unwrap every three years. Perhaps it should be every four years that we hold elections, but that’s

another story for another day. Thank you to the good people of the new Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate for allowing me the privilege of serving you. I look forward to being your voice in parliament and working hard for the rural north over the coming term. Being in opposition means I don’t get to make many decisions, but I’ll continue to do everything I can to encourage the government to serve you. Let’s keep working hard to ensure that you get the infrastructure investment you need and deserve, as well as hopefully avoiding the heavy hand of regulation as much as possible. I hope that the rapidly arriving Christmas season will bring a well-earned rest for ever yone, even while acknowledging those who ‘work through’. Please remember that anyone needing help can contact your local MP. For constituents of Kaipara ki Mahurangi, my office can be reached on 09 412 2496 or chris.penkmp@ parliament.govt.nz. Eradication of Mycoplasma bovis is going to plan, but the industry still has a way to go for the disease. “Although we are on track to achieve eradication, there is still a lot of hard work ahead of us, and we expect to find more infected herds as the M bovis programme continues,” says a DairyNZ spokesperson. DairyNZ is still actively involved in the programme, at both the governance level and on the ground supporting farmers. As of November 12 2020, there have been 257 confirmed properties to date, with seven Active Confirmed Properties and the remaining cleared. “Of these, 137 confirmed properties have been beef, 63 dairy, and 57 classified as others such as calf rearer, grazing and lifestyle. $184.9 million has been paid out in compensation. “Screening is continuing on dairy farms. Each month, a sample is taken at the point of collection, as part of the normal milk collection process. As at November 12, there were six new properties confirmed with M bovis as a result of Bulk Tank Milk screening. “One dairy in Canterbury’s Selwyn District, three dairy farms in Ashburton District, and a further two farms in this area were linked by cattle movements. Recent BTM screening gives confidence that this is an isolated cluster connected by animal movements. These newly identified properties show the national surveillance programme working as it should detecting possible cases and

showing where to look to eliminate the infection. “The National Beef Cattle Surveillance Programme covers screening of beef cattle not connected to the known network of infected properties, sampled at meat processing or alongside TB testing. “As of November 12, samples have been collected from about 86,600 animals, from over 4,000 farms. No beef farms have been confirmed as infected from the surveillance programme. “As we continue to find fewer cases, the M bovis programme’s efforts will be focussed on national surveillance to provide confidence that the disease is absent. Investment paying off An investment of more than $78 million, during three decades into genomic science and genome sequencing technology, is generating markedly-increased productivity and health traits for dairy cows and better returns for dairy farmers. LIC’s Board chair, Murray King, says the cooperative should be proud that it has built such significant genetic wealth for the New Zealand dairy industry. “Significant investment has been made to ensure LIC leads the world in pastoral genomic science. The board is pleased to see this paying off, with all shareholders able to share in the productivity and profitability improvements.” LIC’s general manager NZ Markets, Malcolm Ellis, says when it comes to breeding, LIC is investing in the long game on behalf of its shareholders, with the big prize to benefit farmers. “Farmers appreciate the time lag of genetic gain between putting quality genetics into their herd and seeing the resulting benefits. However, through sustained farmer shareholder investment and a wealth of genomics data, we are delivering an increased rate of genetic gain within the bulls that arrive on-farm each year. “Coupling this with good cows and a good herd presents a real opportunity to further sharpen up the New Zealand dairy herd’s efficiency and its ability to deliver significant, sustainable productive and financial gains for farmers and our country overall.”

The use of genomic sires has grown significantly since 2017, where just under 400,000 inseminations were completed. This year LIC is expecting to complete 1.4 million genomic inseminations throughout the country, a growth of more than one million inseminations in just three seasons. “LIC is continuing to invest on behalf of its farmer shareholders into R&D, including genomics. As we invest more into the space, it is pleasing to see more and more farmers utilising genomic sires, creating on-farm value out of an investment that started with innovative foresight nearly 30 years ago.” LIC’s chief scientist, Richard Spelman, says LIC has been on a genomics journey since the 1990s with the focus being increasing the rate of genetic improvement in New Zealand dairy animals. The cooperative is achieving this by shortening the five-

year generation interval by genomically selecting marketable sires up to three years earlier than conventional progeny testing. “Our journey began in 1994, which was when our gene discovery programme of work commenced. The foresight shown by LIC’s board and shareholders at that time was quite remarkable. It’s what enabled us to develop our platform and build the current genetic wealth our dairy farmers currently share. “This science investment has included genotyping over 150 thousand animals, genomically sequencing over one thousand animals and employing smart people to undertake detailed statistical research. This investment has resulted in our work now delivering improved rates of genetic improvement for today’s dairy farmers.” For more information, go to lic.co.nz/ news.

MUFFLER SERVICES

Big value in a small package by Andy Bryenton

Do you remember the days when things like floor mats, a radio, and a window demister were ‘optional extras’ on a car? In these times, when the options list usually runs to colourful components to add style and flair, the grim ‘cold war era’ practice of making the basics a tick box is long gone. Just how far we’ve come from those dark ages is apparent when you look at the Suzuki Baleno. It’s a small hatchback, which sits in the Japanese automaker’s range just above the ubiquitous, much-loved Swift. The Baleno is that little bit larger, with more cosmopolitan styling inside and out, and it’s a miracle of well-used space, with more room indoors than you used to find in the big sedans of that bygone era we mentioned earlier. It’s neither the unfussy, neat design, the legroom and headroom, the cargo space behind that wide hatch or even the exceptional fuel economy, close to 1,000 kilometres on $100 of fuel, which impresses the most. It’s the list of things you get in this car, which starts from less than $20,000; things that were optional extras, on even the big German luxury marques not so long ago. The list is extensive, so take a deep breath. For safety, there’s ABS, brake assist, five airbags, daytime running lights and an electronic stability program system. You’ll get a touch screen with full colour reversing camera, satellite navigation,

www.mufflerservices.co.nz Suzuki Baleno; a well-rounded daily drive with more toys than Santa’s sleigh for an affordable price

Bluetooth integration for your phone, a powerful, crisp stereo system with Apple Carplay and Android capabilities, air con, cruise control with a speed limiter and electric mirrors, windows and two 12volt sockets for recharging your gadgets. These are all on the standard car; there’s an RS Turbo with even more toys. Think back to the days when a tachometer was something you had to buy and bolt-on for yourself, and an oil pressure gauge was an expensive extra, and the Baleno looks like an incredible bargain. Compare it to several modern cars of the same vintage, which have a price three times as high, and you might start to think there’s something

Oi!

to the argument that certain motorists are paying just for badge-related bragging rights. The Baleno will do everything the Swift will do, with a bit more room and power, and with a bit of a different stylistic twist to help you stand out from the crowd. Suzuki just ‘get’ small cars, as evidenced by its funky trio of the Jimny, Ignis and Swift Sport. The Baleno ticks a whole lot of boxes for an everyday drive. The best part is, it ticks them all for you, without making them optional extras.

WHEELS

Cat amongst the pigeons by Andy Bryenton

Ford’s new Puma signals its intent as soon as you start it up. The fully digital dashboard flashes an image of a stylised big cat, rendered in chrome like the wild horse, which graces the snout of the Mustang.

Attention to detail is the surmounting feature of this new small SUV. No niche has been spared the attention of engineers and designers, who knew full well that they were replacing two Ford icons in one go with this latest offering. The vehicle that the Puma replaces in the current line-up here is the EcoSport, which has proven popular for its utility, economy and ride. Stepping into the Puma, one is immediately impressed by the level of tech and small extras, like puddle lights under the wing mirrors and a fuel range counter on the digital dash. This is a revelation too; bright, crisp and easy to read, it literally puts old mechanical dials in the shade. It became instantly

apparent that while the Puma boasts only a one-litre three-cylinder engine, compressing and aspiration magic have given that small displacement a workout. The old EcoBoost was the engine of the year more times than any other small mill in history, and it’s even quieter and more willing in this new format. Fuel economy sits comfortably in hybrid car territory, while there’s no shortage of extra zip. You’re reminded that this is an ST (as in Fiesta ST, Focus ST) when you blip the throttle, and the car responds in a fashion that can be likened, for us older drivers, to the get-up-and-go of the classic Escort 1600.
