Back in 1947, Jim, a 23-year-old Tangowahine farm boy seeing the need for bulk lime and fertiliser in farming, took a punt in establishing Avoca. “Dad teamed up with Charlie Bickers for the first 10 years and then went out on his own in Tangowahine,” says son Bryce. “At the time, farming was subsidised, and plenty of native bush and scrubland was being broken in privately and at government level through Lands and Survey. The land had a very low pH and phosphate level, and that’s where he spotted the opportunity for producing lime. “Within a few years, he added road trucks, spreaders, a bulk store and mixing plant to original lime works to meet the demand for phosphate and other nutrients essential for major land development occurring after the second world war. “He secured Kaikohe Topdressers, Kaikohe Bulk Store and Oue Lime Works to really ramp up the growth of the company. In the early 1980s, I joined the company fresh out of Lincoln College. By then, Avoca had sites running in Dargaville, Kirikopuni, Kaikohe, Rawene, Moerewa and Waipapa.” Jim passed away in 2010, and Bryce took over as managing director, with the business doubling in size since. “There are now 30 full-time staff, and we’ve expanded beyond Northland with locations and fertiliser advisors around Port Albert, Pukekohe, Te Kauwhata, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty. “I’m proud of the business growth and am thankful for the efforts of my
staff and the support of our farmer client base.” He has also become a voice for soil health and regenerative agriculture. “Despite Avoca being a leading provider of lime and fertiliser mixes and constantly promoting the goodness of lime, I believe many landowners still underestimate its benefits. “In my opinion, soil acidity is farming’s biggest problem. We need to get back to a less intensive farming system by reducing high levels of nitrogen and watersoluble phosphates. “With fertiliser prices, farm inputs and living costs at an all-time high, it makes sense to ‘sweeten’ the soil by boosting pH levels through applying lime, which is also a much cheaper option than traditional fertilisers. “Lime maximises returns from money spent on fertiliser by reducing soil acidity and significantly increases the availability of important plant nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium and trace elements like boron and molybdenum. “I see lime as something of a multipowered superhero because of its soil nutrient, soil structure and soil biology benefits. Farmers who use lime regularly understand this, which is why they keep going back to it. “Some might see lime as old school, but it works, and the old timers knew this. Lime has certainly helped put Northland farming on the map over the decades, and I’m thankful for the legacy dad started.”

Fireworks and fire ban
December 2023
3
The Fire and Emergency Service has announced that fireworks are banned in the Ahipara township and surrounds, on the Karikari Peninsula, and at Ripiro Beach from Friday, December 1, until further notice. “Lighting fireworks in the hot, dry, and windy conditions expected this summer would create a very high risk of fire,” says Northland District manager Wipari Henwood. “Wind can easily carry sparks and embers from fireworks large distances into dry vegetation. Northland has had a number of serious wildfires caused by fireworks in the past, and banning all fireworks in these areas under Section 52 of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017 will lessen the risk.” The ban on fireworks encompasses the Ahipara township and surrounds, the Karikari Peninsula between Tahanga Road, State Highway 10, Te Aurere Road, and the coastline between Te Aurere Road and Tahanga Road. Aranga Beach, Omamari, Baylys Beach, Glinks Gully and the Ripiro Beach area are also included. “It will also extend along the coast from Maunganui Bluff in the north, around the southern tip of Poutō Peninsula to Poutō Point, then inland two kilometres from the water’s edge. “I also encourage people to go to checkitsalright.nz before lighting any type of fire anywhere over summer, to check they are allowed to in the current fire season, and for any other risk reduction advice.” For those travelling to the Hauraki Gulf Islands, it has also entered into a prohibited fire season until further

notice. A prohibited fire season means a total ban on outdoor fires, and all previously granted fire permits are no longer valid. Declaring the prohibited fire season, Fire and Emergency New Zealand Region manager Ron Devlin says El Niño-like weather patterns are expected throughout December. “More frequent warm weather and windy conditions mean there is a greater chance of a fire starting and spreading,” he says. “Adding to this, a relatively damp and wet winter has led to an exponential growth of scrub and grass, which has the
potential over the coming months to dry out quickly, increasing the risk of a fire spreading rapidly. Firefighting efforts on the islands can be difficult because they
are geographically isolated from the rest of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. “Some islands and communities are only accessible by watercraft. By prohibiting people from lighting fires, we lessen the risk of fire.” The prohibition encompasses all islands of the Hauraki Gulf Islands, including Kawau Island in the Waitematā District. People should visit checkitsalright.nz before lighting any type of fire, anywhere during summer, to check they are allowed to in their current fire season.

December 2023 NORTHERN FArmING LIFeSTYLeS
TRADITIONAL METHOD FARMERS BY AMY FIFITA
Cherie Gwilliam and her partner Jamie Hall have lived on their regenerative farm for a decade, using natural resources and doing organic gardening.
“N
either my partner nor I come from any farming background, and I am the first in my family to farm. People thought we were crazy, but now the tables have turned and they think it is a smart idea,” said Cherie. “Our farm was an organic spray-free property for seven years before we moved here, and we have continued that on. We never use sprays or pesticides and worm all our stock and cattle with natural wormers and pest control methods. “I began my organic gardening journey by doing my naturopathic diploma. I realised the importance of having sprayfree, non-chemical and non-toxic food. A lot of our mainstream food supply was sprayed with some harmful chemicals, and that can mess with our bodies in various ways.
“Previously, we rented rural properties that got bigger and bigger. When we moved to Riverhead I started taking a permaculture course. We had three acres there and began getting some sheep and chickens while doing our garden. “We moved to a five-acre property, continued gardening and got some horses in addition to our sheep and chickens before moving to a 10-acre block. We got a caravan and lived out towards Shelly Beach towards South Head. When we moved to our 16-acre bare block in Kaiwaka, there was nothing here, so we lived in the caravan for a year or two.” Cherie and Jamie were expecting their first child, Summer, when they began to build structures on their off-grid property. They started their venture on the farm with no electricity.

Cherie and her daughter, Summer, in the garden at their Kaiwaka property
Cherie Gwilliam began gardening 13 years ago and is now passing her knowledge and experiences on to others wanting to begin their organic gardening journey
“For me, my main passion is my family having easy access to nutrient-dense, clean and healthy food to give them the best start in life. Watching Summer, picking strawberries from the garden, fresh Sugar Snap peas from the vine and eating cherry tomatoes makes me happy. Knowing that none of them have chemicals on them and that they are healthy is great. “Gardening is fascinating, and I am still learning how to grow certain plants. I am now reaching into the tree and orchard domain. Many of our soils were nutrient-deficient, and when we lack certain nutrients, it can create disease in our bodies. I put a lot of vitamins and minerals back into the soil, so I know my vegetables are nutrient-dense.”
Cherie has branched out by doing organic gardening workshops, putting the money made from them back into growing plants. She desires to turn the property into a retreat centre and ignite more interest with more workshops on various topics like tree planting, organic farming, living in a community and offgrid methods. “There are big future plans for the farm. We started with the gardening workshops, and profits from them are spent on garden improvements, so we can continue the chemical-free food growing education. It helps the garden be more self-sustainable, too. We have a similar vision for the retreat centre. “We sacrificed a lot to get to where we are. We are doing more traditional farming than

THE BUFFALO DREAM
BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Damien Stephen learned the art of cooking from his mother in Malaysia, and since arriving in New Zealand, he has upskilled himself and makes cheese and yoghurt in Mangawhai with milk harvested from his buffalo herd.
“M
y mum was a caterer, and in 1988, I came to New Zealand for a holiday and was offered a job on the west coast of the South Island as a chef,” says Damien. “I then went to polytec in Nelson to upskill myself and ended up growing a chain of cafes in Auckland called Pickles with a business partner. A few years earlier, I had started planning my future and saw some River Rhine Italian buffalo for sale and thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’ So I bought them. There is also the Asian buffalo breed, but they don’t have as much milk as the Italian.”
“We eventually sold the cafes, and 13 years ago, I found this property at 644 Mangawhai Road as a way to change pace, live off the land and grow my own food. I brought my herd here, and they roam the hills — it’s a beautiful spot for them.” Damien says they’re friendly animals, but you have to spend time with them. “We now have 60 milking buffalo that are 100 per cent grass-fed. We have an 11-aside milking shed and milk once a day. I find them to be very easy calving, and we have a replacement bull coming through that I purchased from another breeder.
The extensive gardens have a wide variety of vegetables, which are used to help people understand where their food comes from
“Buffalo are very similar to a cow. Although they produce a lot less milk than a cow, their milk is a lot richer and higher in
milk solids. We make cheese and yoghurt because you get a better yield and can make more than double from their product.”

It has been a long-time dream of Damien’s to make buffalo cheese and yoghurt in his purpose-built facility
Damien has Ministry of Primary Industries approval and recently had a purpose-built cheese factory built on his property, fondly called Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock. “I had considered making cheese for a long time and I am excited to be taking it to the market now. The cheese-making facility took approximately five years to organise, and we have plans to expand the area for entertaining and functions in the future. “There’s been a lot of trial and error getting it right, but the Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock brand now has two beautiful cheeses — the Haloumi style, which we call Grilled Cheese, and feta, which we call White Cloud. We also make a beautiful yoghurt.
“Our products are not homogenised, and the whole herd of buffalo is A2A2. A2A2 milk has double protein, double calcium and half the cholesterol compared to cow’s milk, which means it is more digestible. People who are intolerant to lactose often find they are able to have A2A2. “I’ve always wanted to make yoghurt, and mine is 100 per cent milk and culture, nothing else, no sugars or other additives. Because buffalo milk has higher butter fat than cows, the yoghurt is very silky, rich and naturally thick, and it can be used for many things. It has an amazing texture. “To our knowledge, we’re the only people doing buffalo products like this in Northland, and I’m one of the only

people manufacturing buffalo cheese and yoghurt on-site. Buffalo meat is lovely. It’s leaner, higher in protein and has less fat content, meaning it’s healthier for you, but it tastes similar to a cow.” Damien’s partner, Susan, has her own landscaping business. “Susan oversees our extensive gardens. We have a range of fruit trees, including apples, pears, grapes and stone fruit such as plums and peaches. We have all types of vegetables and sell them freshly picked on Saturdays at the farm. “Diversifying into vegetables has been a good thing. Our raised boxes and big beds have things like lettuce, silverbeet, kale, herbs, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. We don’t spray at all. We use a
natural product to eliminate pests such as caterpillars and other natural remedies. “We grew grapevines down the driveway with the intention to make our own wine one day. We call ourselves Corner Paddock because we are where Waiteitei Road, Silverhill Road and Mangawhai Road meet, so it’s fitting. It’s a great location and easy for travellers passing by to find us. “Susan and I enjoy our lifestyle here. Growing our own food is working with nature and the environment. Knowing where our food comes from is what led us to the idea. Our farm is our life, and we’re looking forward to our local and wider community getting to know about our products. We love it here — it’s a dream come true.”

SHEARER
ON THE MOVE
PART ONE
BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Growing up in Kaipara, fifth-generation shearer Shanelle Kemp has been involved in shearing her whole life and focusses on shearing for lifestyle block owners.
“F
rom eight months old, I would go to work with my dad Martyn when he was shearing,” says Shanelle. “Dad would hang me up in my pack on a hook to watch. I often fell asleep watching them work, and when they stopped, I’d wake up. I think the noise lulled me. “When I was 15 years old, I crutched 900 sheep. That was my prime years of fitness — you don’t feel the pain at that age. Now I shear a comfortable 230 in an eight-hour day. Sheep are my pets, just like other people have cats and dogs — I have a flock of 40 sheep.

“My partner Danny Hapeta and I met in Taihape at a job in Ngamatea — a big 18-stand station. When I was growing up, I never thought I’d be a shearer. I thought there were better ways to earn money than having a handpiece in my hand all day.” Shanelle is now 33 years old and decided to become a lifestyle block shearer some 10 years ago to help people with small flocks. “When I decided I wanted to go shearing, I had a young family and couldn’t go to the sheds, so lifestyling was the closest I could get to my dream. I now have 400 clients that I service and
NORTHLAND LIME Increases nutrient availability; raising soil pH with lime to ~6.3-6.5 releases and balances soil nutrients for plant uptake, maximising return on your fertiliser spend. Improves pasture yield. Trials have shown pasture production increases up to 68% and corresponding live weight gains.
Reduces need for N-fertiliser; lime stimulates N-fixation by legumes, and N-release from organic matter into plant available forms.
Improves P availability through a ‘phosphate sparing effect’ - trials in Northland showed 50-60kg more P available consistent over 3 years after applying 5t/ha of lime to a pH 5.8 soil. Optimal P availability occurs when soils are limes to pH 6.3-6.5. Improves pasture palatability allowing for more even grazing of pasture and better pasture utilisation
Shanelle says just like other people have cats and dogs, her flock of sheep are her pets
that’s increasing. I also do the crutching, drenching and take care of their feet. “I have 17 runs from Waitoki down at Kaukapakapa and up to Whangārei,

reasons to apply lime to your soils: Increases soil biological activity and diversity; key to nutrient availability, good soil structure & porosity, and ultimately pasture/crop yield.
Increases resilience to droughts, floods, and runoff/erosion, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and greater root penetration for pasture/crop growth by flocculating (loosening) your soil to improve soil structure and porosity Increases water holding capacity in the dry and water drainage in the wet. Lime drives down magnesium in ‘tight, high Mg’ soils such as estuarine soils found in the Hauraki Plains. Reduces elemental toxicities evident at low pH levels, e.g. Al, preventing subsoil acidification and improving root growth, root development, and reduces P-fixation. Provides calcium which is essential for both plant and animal growth and health
For more than 75 years, Avoca has been supplying Northland farmers with expert advice and top quality agricultural lime and fertilisers to ensure better crops and healthier livestock.

Ensuring her equipment is set up correctly before each job is an important part of Shanelle’s workday routine
“I love working with sheep. They’re my pets and are certainly not dumb animals. They’re really on to it. They can be silly when they’re panicked, but when they’re nice and calm, they’re intelligent. You do need to worry about being around rams, even pet ones. “You never turn your back on rams, especially the young ones, as they can kick and be feisty. I find the older ones much calmer than the young ones. I think it’s because they’ve been through the ropes many times and know the process of shearing. “My biggest fear is rams with children. If you have a pet ram, it’s best to castrate
him because pet rams are worse than wild ones. They can turn on you and hurt you badly — I know this from experience. For pet day, they’re not meant to be intact. You’re meant to have them castrated for safety reasons. “An adult can protect themselves, but a child’s head and a ram are at the same level, and a smack in the head can cause a lot of damage. They can break bones or dislocate your hips and knees if they take a good run-up to you. “When people call me, ideally, they get the sheep into a holding pen and have them off the grass 12 hours prior to me arriving so they can empty out. If a sheep is full when

shearing, they can’t breathe properly, and it’s very uncomfortable for them. “At times, I get people to eat a big meal, lay on the ground and get their children to lay on their puku to see how it feels, then they understand. Sheep can last up to 24 hours off the grass. “Having an empty stomach is easier on them, and they’re calmer. It takes me up to one minute to shear one sheep, depending on their size. Sheep aren’t in pain when getting shorn. “Once I have shorn the animals, we can put the wool in a wool fadge to take away. It’s not worth much now, so I encourage people to put it around their gardens
or give it to someone who spins wool for knitting. “I can also do drenching, nail clipping, flystrike, ear tagging, vaccinating and docking. It means the owners don’t have to worry themselves. I encourage checking over animals every six to eight weeks or monthly, depending on the owner’s level of knowledge.” Shanelle passes on animal care information to educate new owners. “Some don’t realise sheep need shearing. I’m considering creating a few tutorial videos so people can see what to do, especially those who are new to owning animals.” Read part two of Shanelle’s story next year.

Joint problems — dealing with the causes (Part two)
by John Arts
Most people will experience Osteoarthritis (OA) in their lifetime. OA was referred to as ‘wear and tear arthritis’ or similar, which gave the impression that over time, cartilage ‘wears out’ like slowly rubbing sandpaper on wood.
There were several speakers at the recent Wetland Demonstration Field Day
“The event aimed to foster discussions on the environmental and biodiversity benefits of effective wetland design,” says catchment coordinator Graham Matthews. “Participants explored wetland design practices on a demo site organised under the Bream Bay Rivers Community Project. Through this project, funded by the Ministry of Primary Industries, the goal is to support a sustainable community-led catchment model to improve freshwater quality and biodiversity.” The day commenced with an introduction from Carl Gordon, chair of the project steering group and Graham Matthews, the project catchment coordinator. “Insights were shared by guest speakers, including Hamish Matthews from DairyNZ, Ben Herbert from Fonterra and Nick Naysmith, manager of the Whitebait Connection Programme delivered by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust. “Northland has witnessed a significant loss of 97 per cent of its wetland areas due to drainage. Recognising the vital role wetlands play in farm systems, the event emphasised the importance of protecting, restoring and creating wetlands on-farm. “These initiatives help reduce nutrient losses and provide valuable habitats for native plants and animals. Cost-effective practices to enhance wetland ecosystems were discussed, such as fencing wetlands and soaked areas to protect them from stock, allowing for regeneration and optimal functioning. “This not only improves stock management but also safeguards land from flood damage while providing habitat for various species. increase nitrate uptake, trap sediments, and enhance habitats for native wildlife. “This practice also brings shade, reduces water temperature, and minimises the growth of weeds and algae. Including a sedimentation pond to capture coarse sediment, extract phosphate for eventual reuse, and extend the wetland’s lifetime by facilitating even water flow. “The incorporation of fish passages in wetland designs was also highlighted. Good wetland design, beyond its benefits in reducing nitrogen and phosphorus, controlling sediments, and slowing flood flows, also actively supports native species such as īnanga. “Nick, from the Whitebait Connection, explained how īnanga, the most common native fish caught as whitebait, relies on wetlands. Īnanga spend half their lives in freshwater, migrating as juveniles into rivers and streams to grow into adults. “Wetlands, serving as excellent lowland freshwater rearing sites, play a vital role in the īnanga lifecycle. Offering a habitat for this keystone species significantly contributes to the increase in aquatic and marine biodiversity.” The event concluded with a visit to the demo site, offering insights into different dams and the planting of native species. “A barbecue provided the perfect opportunity for participants to discuss these practices and their implementation further.” For more information on well-designed wetlands, visit the DairyNZ website, which is a valuable resource. To learn more about the project or join a catchment group in Bream Bay, contact Graham at 027 432 1016 or email catchmentgroups@ piroaconservation.org.nz. • Are you having trouble with rubbish getting into your farm pump? • Weeds building up on your water filter? • Algae blocking your water lines?
The cause of cartilage loss is complex and is much more than cartilage wearing away. Cartilage is lost when the specialised cells that live in cartilage, called chondrocytes, are damaged. This damage can come from trauma or by a slow process of free radical damage to chondrocytes. As chondrocytes die, they cannot maintain cartilage, which slowly disintegrates. It can be accelerated by certain enzymes (MMPs), which can be triggered by trauma. The key to maintaining healthy cartilage is Chondroitin Sulfate (CS). This is secreted by chondrocytes as they repair cartilage. Adding therapeutic levels of CS can help protect chondrocytes and further help to restore damaged cartilage. Maintaining good levels of CS is critical for joint health as it helps to maintain both the strength (resistance) and flexibility. Adding supplemental CS is, in my opinion, the single most effective method of preserving and maintaining cartilage health, even if the joint is showing signs of OA. That is supported by several international organisations,

How can Bettaflex help? • Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • New BioSolve® bioavailable curcumin helps joint function while gentle on the stomach. • Research indicates that chondroitin is highly effective at 800mg daily.
John Arts comments: “My latest Bettaflex formula includes BioSolve® bioavailable curcumin for faster results. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend an initial higher dose for 1-3 bottles to saturate join tissue.” (John Arts, Founder, Abundant Health)

and, more importantly, the European Medicine Agency has approved CS as a prescribed medicine in Europe. My preference is for CS from avian (chicken) sources CS as its smaller molecular size allows for rapid accumulation within the joint capsule. While my standard longterm recommendation is 800mg daily, I usually commence therapy with 1,600mg and review every six weeks. For best results, look for supplements that combine CS with similar levels of glucosamine and a new generation 100% water-soluble curcumin (turmeric) extract to help reduce joint capsule inflammation. The joy of local
by Ann van Engelen
Supporting local farmers and growers markets has become an important part of urban and rural living. In recent years, people have become more interested in where their food comes from, how it is grown, and by whom. Farmers and growers markets have popped up all over the country, giving locals and visitors alike the opportunity to purchase the freshest produce and get to know their community. “I have been taking my cheeses to farmers markets like the Tūtūkākā evening market and other markets for some time now,” says Big K’s cheese owner Kerry Le Gallais. “People who shop at the markets support local small businesses and help keep the economy going and the money in the community rather than the big shops where it goes out. They are also purchasing handcrafts and things that have heart put into them rather than mass-produced items. “We put a lot of time and effort into making sure what we supply is suitable for our customers. It’s really nice meeting people at the markets — it’s locals supporting locals. You get to talk to your customers directly and get their knowledge of the areas as well as being able to share what you know.

Local supports local

Businesses in your community are a good place to start enquiring about products or services you and your family may need, whether it’s vehicles, suit hire, a beautician or a special gift. With the season for weddings and celebrations upon us, consider hiring a suit from your local menswear store if you don’t have one already or won’t use one again for some time. Hiring such attire not only relieves the stress of storage and drycleaning, but no doubt, the staff will ensure the suit you choose fits correctly and give you a variety of choices. Whether you work outdoors or indoors, have regular skincare routines or are new to the idea, remember your local skincare and beauty therapy clinics are the place to go. Working rurally means your skin is exposed to not just the sun and wind but you can be exposed to sprays and harsh substances. Skin care therapists are trained in the products and services they use and, therefore, can advise what they believe is the solution for any concerns you may have. Don’t forget, facials, massages and other beauty services make great gifts for the people in your life. Tractors, ATVs, family cars, motorbikes and other vehicles or farm machinery are all part of everyday rural life. Buying from your local dealers, not only keeps your community running but means if
“It’s not the money you spend. It’s the thought and consideration behind the giving.” anything should go mechanically wrong, your supplier is close to home. When your man has a man cave and your lady has a she shed, adding to their array of delightful objects comes easy if you know the style they enjoy. Books, crystals, special beverage glasses and coffee mugs can all add to the atmosphere of those quiet spaces. At times, rather than surprising the cave or shed dweller with items they may not need or enjoy, check in with them on what they may like for ideas. There may be something they want in particular that would then make a purchase that much more special. Remember, with gift-giving, most stores have something for everyone. It’s not the amount of money you spend on an item that makes it special. It’s the thought and consideration behind the giving that adds to the memory of receiving.

The harvest of summer
The holiday season is also the season for many fruits; they can be picked from the plant or bought on the side of the road at honesty boxes. The supermarket alternative of freshly picked fruit and vegetables is often cheaper when buying from honesty boxes. There is security in knowing that the fruity goodness was harvested within a short walk from the purchase spot. If road-tripping around Northland with a keen eye, travellers will unearth a treasure basket of food from local farmers. For those who like a challenge, try making a meal from honesty box goodies. Explorers can find honey, eggs, avocados, fruit and other tasty delights when traversing from Albany to Cape Rēinga. For a more involved experience, some horticulturalists give people the opportunity to gather produce from their orchards. Children can learn and understand where their food comes from and have the joy of harvesting fruit, too. Most places require visitors to make an appointment, and some only accept cash. Harvesters should check with the farms to see if they must bring their own bucket. Close to Kaikohe, in Awarua, people can delight in picking dahlia blooms at the Green Footed Kiwi. The

Beating the summer dry

What we haven’t got we can get!
Choosing drought-resistant plants such as lavender will save water and time
alive. Applying a five-centimetre deep layer of mulch, such as post peelings, pea straw, or even newspaper, will help retain moisture for longer periods of time. Applying too much mulch could prevent air and water from getting into the soil and should be applied lightly. Before adding any mulch, add generous amounts of compost to the garden. It will help retain moisture in the soil for longer. Water everything well before adding the final
mulch layer on top, avoiding trunks, stems and leaves. Water conservation With most rural properties relying on tanks or bores, conserving water during extreme dry can be challenging. Deep watering in the early morning or evening, two or three times a week, will help send plant roots deeper into the soil. A good soaking rather than a short sprinkling is always the way to go.
Using a sprinkler system in the garden is one of the most inefficient ways to water plants — 30–50 per cent moisture loss is common. The spray also will go where it’s not needed and result in unwanted weeds growing where they are not wanted. A drip irrigation system is the most effective way to deliver water directly to the root systems while saving water and time. Choosing a good-quality set-up will mean a long-lasting system without the issues associated with cheaper, more leak-prone products. Drought-resistant plants New Zealand natives have become the first-choice option for many gardens. Chosen for their attractive form and colour, many species are available at local nurseries. Try out the attractive pōhutukawa as a shelterbelt or a standalone specimen tree. Its deep crimson blooms in early summer provide a burst of colour and provide food for native birds, bees and butterflies. Also consider akeake, carex, Griselinia, Knightia, Poor Knights Lily, Olearia and many more. Other plants that love the dry include proteas, waratahs, leucadendrons, achillea, dianthus, gazania and lavender.

A wild experience
With the holiday period looming, many families are planning trips, but it is also an opportunity to indulge in the local campsites and pristine beaches the north has. Waterfront accommodation is a temptation for some, while others may prefer the tranquil solitude of being in the middle of the wilderness. Northland offers options for all sorts of explorers. The experience can be a way to fully appreciate what the local people conserve and have to showcase. The options are vast, too. Before setting off, consider perusing the ground’s rules and track alerts so travellers can prepare for the trip. Close to Cape Rēinga sits the Tapotupotu Campsite, which provides explorers with a drive-in experience or a forest trek. Campervans have access to this site, and there are 45 non-powered tent sites. Nearby is a gorgeous lagoon for many aquatic activities like diving, snorkelling, swimming, kayaking or fishing. There are also walking tracks for adventurous souls who want to enjoy the remote atmosphere and marvel at the native birds that call the area home. For those who prefer the outdoor experience to be a short distance from a shop, Houhora Heads Wagener Holiday Park is a comfortable accommodation
Explore the Tāwharanui Regional Park walking tracks to discover Anchor Bay, one of many bays in the area
option. The beachfront property has cabins available that sleep two to seven people and tent and motorhome sites. There are communal cooking areas, including barbecues and pizza ovens. Mount Camel is a stone’s throw away for explorers wanting to challenge themselves with an uphill climb. Water babies have the option of dipping into the sea or enjoying the outdoor pool. Children under 12 years old can have fun on the playground. In the Kaipara region, the Taharoa Domain has two campsites: Promenade Point and Pine Point. Pine Beach has
powered and non-powered sites on the eastern side of Lake Taharoa, while the other spot is fully non-powered. Both grounds give explorers access to the crystal-clear waters that the Kai Iwi Lakes have. There are also walking tracks to tramp around the domain and water fun for swimmers, kayakers and snorkelers. Tāwharanui Regional Park provides visitors with a campground or bach option. Booking is available online. Located about 25 minutes from Warkworth, guests are treated to beautiful scenes of the ocean, white dunes and farmland. There is an ecology trail, one of many walks that showcases the area’s multiple bays, birdlife and native bush.

Farmers asked for feedback on water rules
Farmers have until March 2024 to give their feedback on sweeping new changes regarding water use on farms proposed by the Northland Regional Council. The NRC will attend pastoral and farming events, such as local A&P shows, to promote their proposals for change, culminating in a presence at Northland Field Days in Dargaville. It seeks input from those directly affected by proposed new rules around water use, which they say ‘could mean big changes’ to how the resource is managed across the north. “The more we do, the greater the environmental benefits, but the higher the financial costs,” said NRC councillor and Natural Resources Working Party chair Amy Macdonald. “We need your input to make decisions that will work for our community as well as our waterways.” The proposals include stronger regulations for farmers in the region, including new resource consents for dairy effluent activities and consents to discharge water. There has also been a

suggestion of significant stock exclusion setbacks of up to 10 metres from waterways. Additionally, stock exclusion requirements have been posited for highly erodible land with more than a 25-degree slope. More farming activities will also need cultural impact assessments. This raft of changes does not stand alone. It is part of a nationwide response by municipal and regional bodies to the government’s controversial National Policy

Statement for Freshwater Management. While farmers are being urged to contact the NRC and have their say about how this will impact their lives and their businesses, advocacy groups in the rural sector are doubling down on their influence with the incoming government by preparing a joint response. Fonterra, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, DairyNZ and Federated Farmers are coordinating to stand united on their suggested changes and potential opposition to facets of the new rules. This same collaborative approach will be taken to address issues with the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management when parliament is reformed following coalition talks. The feedback received now will inform the NRC’s alteration to its proposal. It could change the way farming progresses in Northland. Water is a key issue and has been highlighted in recent years with debates around Three Waters, Taumata Arowai and the general discourse on overregulation of the rural sector. Fencing supports farmers
More than 300 farmers received free fencing materials at a charity event by the Rapid Relief Team in Wellsford recently, seeing approximately 100km of donated fencing distributed to those impacted by cyclones and floods. “It was great to see the smiles on the faces of the farmers and their families,” said RRT New Zealand director Danny Blampied. “These people have been through some hard times in 2023, so it was great to be able to cheer them up and give them a reason to be hopeful.” The Rapid Relief Team is the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. It was established in NZ in 2014 and has about 14,500 volunteers worldwide. “The team has staged five Farmers Community Connect events in New Zealand in the past few months, providing more than 1,300 farmers with fencing materials with each donated pack valued at $1,500. “The FCC events provided free food and coffee for the community to come along and celebrate their local farmers. The RRT has also organised up to 20 agencies to be on hand to provide support and advice to farmers and their families. “It was great to see people from Wellsford and surrounds turning out for these events.”
The fencing gifts add up to approximately 100km in length
Kaiwaka residents Pamela and Leanne Stringer were one family who received the gifted fencing packages. “Mum’s farm was terribly affected by the cyclone, and the damage was extensive,” says Leanne. “When weather warnings come in, take them seriously. Areas can flood so quickly, without people realising. We have to replace an awful lot of fences on our property because of the volume of
water that hit us and the storm damage in general. “RRT advertised on Facebook and said to click the link, so I did, because I thought there was no harm in applying. It wasn’t just for the big farmers — it was for everyone. Being gifted, the package has made a huge difference to us as we’re still cleaning up now from the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle.
“The fencing material gift was brilliant and means that we can do some fencing that otherwise would have just been patched. The RRT team were absolutely lovely — they went above and beyond. “Right from when you pulled in, there was someone to greet you and ask how you were going. They had a couple of guys on bikes giving out bottled water while we waited, and we received a goody bag, too. It was mind-blowing.”

WATER MATTERS Household drought preparation
by Ann van Engelen
With the expectation of a drought season approaching, preparation is advised for both animal, crop and household needs. Water is a precious product, and what may seem like common sense to some people may not be known by others who are new to rural life. First and foremost, ensure your animals have enough water at all times. Check your farm pipes and troughs periodically for leaks. Water sources, including ponds, rivers and streams, can be greatly impacted, resulting in loss of water supply, crop damage and significant effects on the environment. Efforts to conserve water should be made by everyone. Before, and during a drought, take steps to reduce water usage and make water conservation practises a part of your daily life. Indoor water conservation tips include avoiding pouring water down the drain. Instead, use it for watering your indoor plants or garden. Check all plumbing, including taps, for leaks and have any leaks repaired by a plumber. One drop each second wastes 2,700 gallons of water a year. Make it a habit to use a half flush in the toilet when possible, and replace your showerhead with a low-flow version.
Be mindful of water usage in all areas of rural and urban living
Place a bucket in the shower to catch excess water for watering plants. Take short showers, and don’t let the tap run unused. Avoid running water while brushing your teeth, washing your face or shaving. Rather than use sink
KIWI WELLDRILLERS NZ
disposal units, start a compost pile for food waste. Plant native and drought-tolerant grasses, ground covers, shrubs, trees or small plants. Small plants require less water to become established. Mulch also
helps to control weeds that compete with landscape plants for water. Avoid purchasing recreational water toys that require a constant stream of water and raise the lawn mower blade to at least three inches or to its highest level. A higher cut encourages grass roots to grow deeper, shades the root system, and holds soil moisture. Clean vegetables in a pot filled with water and store drinking water in the refrigerator. Rather than wasting water waiting for it to get hot, capture it for things like plant watering. Operate washing machines only when they are fully loaded or set the appropriate water level for the size of your load. If watering your garden is necessary, do so early morning or later in the evening, when temperatures are cooler, and water is less likely to evaporate. Avoid leaving sprinklers or hoses unattended, as a garden hose can pour out 600 gallons or more in only a few hours. If your water levels are low, order from a water supplier in good time to guarantee you and your animals don’t run out.

Motocross encourages safety
Renee Anderson and the team at Dargaville Motocross Club are encouraging farmers to donate to the Northland Rescue Helicopter and ensure their farm vehicles are well maintained. “We recently donated $1,000 to the rescue chopper as a thank you for their services,” says Renee. “Our club has been together since 2010, and each year, we try to fundraise for the chopper. We’ve had to use the service five times over the last 10 years for various incidents. Without it, the outcome would have been horrendous. “Motocross is a motorbike sport, and a lot of farmers enjoy the activity. Just like farmers and their farm bikes, riders are encouraged to look after their stuff and have their bikes serviced regularly. The bikes are a lot different from farm bikes. You go a lot faster, but the riders train extensively to be as safe as possible. “The maintenance teams take a lot of pride in ensuring their tracks are well maintained. Things such as the weather, cross ruts, bike maintenance or something going wrong unexpectedly are factors that can cause an accident. “At the beginning of an event, the riders complete practice laps to get the feel of the track and see where any danger zones could be. It’s fun with a lot of skill involved, and knowing what your body and your bike can handle is important. If they don’t feel up to a track, they can pull out of the event.
Dargaville Motocross member Renee Anderson handing over the club’s donation to the Northland Rescue Helicopter staff
“Part of the safety equipment consists of boots, armour, neck and knee braces, mouth guards and special helmets. If a helmet gets a crack, it needs to be replaced, and we always have paramedics on-site at a race day. “My 12-year-old son Lachlan began when he was four and has made friends all over the North Island. He’s aiming to be a professional rider. Girls enjoy the sport, too. My niece is an
amazing little rider, as is my six-year-old daughter. “Bike maintenance is really important for any bike, including farm bikes. We farm in Dargaville at Mahuta, and we needed the chopper once. It is absolutely essential, as there is no way the ambulance can get out to where a chopper could. “One of our farms is coastal, and there’s no way an ambulance can get out the back if a quad or tractor rolled. It’s a life-saving
tool, and it’s often not until you need it that you realise how important it is. “We highly encourage people to support the Northland Rescue Helicopter at nest. org.nz. No matter what vehicle you use, it can be any day that we need the service. “You don’t go out thinking you are going to crash; you go out with the thought of enjoying yourself and doing what you love, so any incident we have is unexpected.”

The first spark
Subaru’s electric sports utility vehicle, the Solterra, is expected to arrive just in time for Christmas with the vehicle company’s first fully electric automobile. The brand’s EV is almost ready to cruise the streets with 215 horsepower in this galvanic car. The automobile manufacturer has its eyes set on the sustainable sunrise with the Solterra, a name meaning sun and earth. A collaboration between Subaru and Toyota gave way to the production of the BZ4X and the Solterra. What makes the Solterra different is that it is reportedly faster and better to handle. There is a difference in the price, too. Subaru offers its EV with the standard all-wheeldrive system for the retail recommended price of $79,990, while buyers must pay more for AWD on its twin equivalent. The vehicle comes equipped with two electric motors and a range of 465 kilometres allowing travellers a good distance between charging stations. It is spacious, suitable for family trips and befitting for light off-roading experiences. Despite being a change in direction for the company, the EV still has the distinctive Subaru features and abilities. Its features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a 12.3-inch centre display, a power rear tailgate and a 10-way power driver seat. The vehicle also provides six speakers, dual-zone air conditioning, a cloth interior and wireless capabilities.
“The goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90% of its 2010 output.” Those wanting a more luxurious drive can spend an extra $5,000 for the Solterra Touring. It has synthetic leather upholstery, Harman Kardon speakers, a panorama sunroof, intelligent parking assistance, and a heated steering wheel and seats. This option comes with a wireless phone charger, 20-inch alloy wheels and, for an extra $1,000, a twotone exterior paint job. The company’s goal is to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 90% of its 2010 output. Those goals allow the company to forge forward using advanced technologies to provide environmentally efficient automobiles. The Solterra is part of the corporation, showing its commitment to sustainability and producing only electric and hybrid vehicles for the world markets by 2030.

The weather for the last 12 months or more hasn’t been conducive to any weed control. Gorse is one of the hottest burning plants known to man and can exceed 600 degrees Celsius. Thinking about its prevalence in Northland caused me to recall a visit to Canberra after the 2003 fires that destroyed large swaths of bushland and the Australian Capital Territory. The delegation I headed was made up of scientists from Forest Research (now Scion) and forestry companies from areas of New Zealand that we then considered prime fire risks. The fact is, one day, there is a relatively high probability that it could happen in Northland, and it would be devastating. What makes that even more probable is the potential impact of the Northland Regional Council’s draft Fresh Water Plan. The NRC is proposing to create substantial amounts of fire corridors throughout the region that would enable a similar situation to what eventuated in Canberra and that could have a majorly detrimental impact on Northland. To put this in perspective, the National Policy Statement on Freshwater recommends fencing three metres back from waterways. Yet the NRC wants to blow this out of the water (literally) and force landowners to put fences 10 metres on either side of waterways, rivers, streams, drains and creeks. That’s 300% more than currently recommended nationally.
These setbacks will become a major fire risk throughout the region, as they will link up with many of the existing and new forests around our region in drought conditions. These waterways would become weed-central and tinder-dry in summer, so with just one spark from farm machinery, it would be carnage. Dry gorse, mānuka and drying tōtara from drought will burn excessively hot, and even a 30-metre fire break would not stop the fire. With the fact that large areas of Northland are in native vegetation and an increasing area in plantation forest, this proposed NRC policy around waterway setbacks is setting the scene for extensive fires throughout our region. Around half of Northland is in forest and planted plantations. Adding kilometres of setback land full of vegetation will only increase the risk. Whangārei itself would have to become an extreme risk with the beautiful forest right to its boundary, and Paihia would not be far behind. Farmers need to be even more vigilant as drying kikuyu becomes a conduit for low-heat burning fires that creep towards these conflagration points that will create havoc across our beautiful region. Ten-metre setbacks are not a good option in Northland, which is why rural landowners need to urgently submit their opposition to the NRC’s Fresh Water Plan.
