“It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 32nd Northland Field Days. Again our dedicated band of voluntary organisers, associate and community helpers along with our sole employee have worked hard over the last 12 months to ensure another quality event for you all to enjoy at New Zealand’s friendliest Field Days,” says Lew Duggan, president of Northland Field Days. “In line with our charitable trust status, and continuing on our previous $10,500 of allocated scholarship funding, we have proudly availed another $10,000 from last year’s event proceeds worth of grant funding. This has been awarded to the Northern Young Farmers clubs and is to be spread over a two year period to assist them with rally days, recruitment and to investigate establishing new clubs in the Northland area. “We see this as an investment into the future for the Northland Agricultural sector to promote and sustain healthy growth for those interested in agriculture in the years ahead. “This event is the perfect opportunity for town and country to unite, share and promote the wonderful lifestyle sectors New Zealand offers and to ensure solid foundation support for our primary industry by partnering with exhibitors

Sheep dog trials and the ever-popular logging sports competitions will be highlights at this years Northland Field Days from March 3 to 5 in Dargaville with exhibitors and the events committee working overtime to search for more new events, according to president Lew Duggan. “A special effort has been made to cater to families and the committee has collected together a large number of events and attractions for kids of all ages.” he said. “Events include Clydesdale rides, digital trap shooting, sheep races, a petting zoo and more.” Logger sports promises to be especially exciting this year according to event organiser Carl Bowman who says the area allocated for the event has grown to accommodate a wider range of activities and a bigger competitor list. Competition will be heating up in the log loading event with ten operators lining up, double the number attending last year. In the event, competitors take turns to unload and reload a trailer unit of logs with an excavator purpose-built for forestry work. Other events include athletes trying their hand at everything from chainsaw racing to wood chopping. Sheepdog trial organisers expect around 60 dogs to take part in a lineup featuring some of New Zealand’s brightest and best dog trialists. Past New Zealand champions Murray Child, Kenny Whittaker, Scott McCray, Ian McKinnon Alan Nisbett and Neville Child

are all likely to take to the starting point as is last year’s New Zealand handy dog champion Duncan Gilligan. However, New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association president Chris Robertson is pleased to see a growing number of females taking part in the sport. “I expect Anna Blair and Erin Ball, both exciting competitors in their own right, to take part in the competition.” From Thursday to Saturday the event programme lists sheep dog trials ‘to find the best in the region’ — with competitions being run since 2008 and attracting
Northland’s top dogs and shepherds. There is also a ‘human sheep dog’ contest on Friday and a dog agility demonstration on Saturday. For the younger set, there is a Big Fun activity zone including water walkers and an inflatable playground. Clydesdale Rides will enable visitors to make their way around the event ‘in style’, aboard a wagon pulled by three Clydesdale horses.

y family wanted to live somewhere closer to a university and get away from the cold winters and New Zealand was a great opportunity,” said Sean. “I was a young person living in Whangarei struggling to find work and my parents remembered growing up in Canada and having an online co-op called Ottawa Valley Food Cooperative. This gave us the idea for Northland Natural Food Co-op. “We have been operating for a year now and it has been really successful. We wanted to start the business because we believed growers should be fairly compensated for their work and we have a passion for environmental stewardship. “Rowan, myself and our directors want Northland to be aware that most food eaten can be grown and produced
nearby. We believe it is good for our health, the planet’s health and the local economy. The business creates jobs and keeps the dollars circulating.” As a web developer Sean says the internet is a fantastic tool to redesign many of our unsustainable existing systems. “Online co-ops put power back into the hands of the community, as well as reduce environmental footprints and empower consumers to be more conscious of their purchases. They are designed to be incredibly resilient as well as sustainable financially and environmentally. “We started working with a well established model and then formed a steering committee The first year has been predominantly attracting members. So far we have 90 members with 20 small to medium scale producers.”
it local
The co-op requires all producers to have no genetically modified products, no sprays and no caged eggs or meat such as pork. Although most suppliers are not certified organic, they live with organic practices and come from as far South as the Kaipara to as far North as Kaitaia. “The idea is to offer an online platform for people to sell their own goods. We have a central distribution hub for packing and sorting. The hub handle all the administration and deliveries of products and the website is easy to use for people to place orders.” “Growers deliver their products to us and we sort and pack them and customers can collect them or have their orders delivered.” The range available includes organic raw milk, free range eggs, whole or half lamb or goat, local jams sauces beverages, fresh baked gluten free, traditional daily bread baked and much more.

“It is our priority to make sure all of our suppliers are compliant with the new rules coming in and we want to expand our collection. We are always looking for more supporters and have new initiatives and we are starting a reuseable packaging scheme and establishing new branding promoting the quality of the region’s products. “We will be attending several events and helping start up other co-ops
around Northland such as in Kaikohe, Kaitaia and the Hokianga. Often people will deliver for others who live in their area or they take turns picking up the orders, this is what we call community powered delivery. “A grant was secured from the Far North District Council to help start the initiative in the far North communities. This helps connect the local community around the food community. It means there is less wastage and quality, fresh veggies for locals. “It is very exciting and there is a definite trend of consumers who will not shop in large stores and are looking for better ways to source good quality food. “Sugar cane came in and we sold out in a few days.

“Our supplier planted a small batch as a trial to see if there was an interest and there was — she needs to grow a lot more. This platform is also a quick way to find out in a safe low risk environment what products people want in ways of food. “The business has application forms for those wanting to join us so we can check production practices and where they harvest wild products from. “We are really passionate about local food and the ease of having a local food based diet and believe this is a very positive move not just for now but for generations to come,” said Sean.

LIFE’S A
GAME Twenty eight year old self confessed gamer, Helen Glynn, has managed to fit a lot into her life including farming for two months in Missouri, working on the infamous Crafar Farms, and helping to manage a strip club in Taupo. was one of the top six eventers in New Zealand when she was only 12 years old. When she left school she went to work for a racing stable in Cambridge. There, her love of animals grew, and that marked the beginning of her career in the farming industry. “Dad drove me up to Rangitaiki for an interview when I was 16 years old and that’s how I got started in dairy farming,” she says. After that she worked for a number of different farms around the area for the Crafar’s, trying to help as best she could under the circumstances, until the opportunity came up to spend two months working on a dairy farm in Missouri in the United States. Before her 21st birthday, Helen moved back to Taupo after having enough wild life experiences to last a lifetime. “I don’t do critters,” she says. “Every morning there would be something new when you turn on the lights in the milking shed, from a snake, to a frog, to

Helen’s loyal working dogs go wherever she goes
Helen and fellow farmer Valeria Maw don’t mind getting their hands dirty now.” She says she still enjoys milking cows and would one day like to own a farm of her own although admits she isn’t holding her breath. “If the market picks up I eventually want to have my own farm, but for the next 5–10 years, it doesn’t look very good.” When she isn’t working, or playing Call of Duty and Modern Warfare, she transfers her first-person shooter skills to real life and goes hunting with mates.
“We go fishing, shooting possums or eeling, just normal stuff.” She would recommend farming to other young people as a career but only if it isn’t their only choice. “If they are doing it to progress in life I’d definitely recommend it. It’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle. You can’t just take it on like a 9–5 job.” The best part about the lifestyle is that her working dogs, Gambit and Chaos, have a better life, her horse
Max gets a paddock and she doesn’t have to pay grazing she jokes. She has considered breaking in horses as being her next challenge. “I’ve been watching Keeping up with the Kaimanawas a lot. That interested me and I’ve been sorting out friends’ horses.” Max is testament to Helen’s skills. “He hated people at first but we are friends now. I’m all for the natural horsemanship. They would pack up the car and take all the product down to the railway station for distribution,” said company director Steve Sharpe. “By the early 70s Bert and Dawn realised that plastic was the way of the future and redeveloped the original Brass Quick Couplings and Brass Foot and Check Valves in plastic. telling us what their requirements are.” The turn of the millennium saw a continuation on the path of constant improvement. The Easy Fit range was updated and after much encouragement from the market our Full Flow Ball Valve was released. “Our in-house Research and Design team developed several new products for release, the Level Alert Heavy Duty Tank Level Indicator, the Leveller Tank/ Reservoir Valve, Superflo Piston Valve and the Maxflo Diaphragm Valve. “At Hansen we believe the Superflo and Maxflo valves have become the next industry standard of High Performance Float Valves,” says Steve. “The winning formula that has been applied to the product range since the 1950s has ensured a loyal customer
The specialist team can check and advise on water issues their clients have on farm an opportunity to add to their range and designed and manufactured a range of Nylon easy to use ‘Cold Fit Pipe Fittings.’ This completely changed the way Kiwi farmers joined alkathene pipe.” In the mid 1980s their son Carl injected more enthusiasm and ideas when he arrived from completing his engineering studies and the team didn’t sit still. “As the range of products was growing rapidly, it was time to move out of the garage and into a manufacturing plant to start injection moulding their products. This move was a huge investment and there were many sleepless nights in the Hansen households but it proved to be the right decision. It wasn’t long before the products were being demanded all over the world. In 1999 they moved to a building in Union East Street, Whangarei.” The turn of the millennium saw a sister company in Canada established — Irripod was purchased, the Easy Fit range was updated and the Full Flow Ball Valve was released.
“We are still continuing to design, manufacture and distribute pipe fittings and valves of the highest quality around the world. Hansen has built a reputation for providing high performance, easy to use, simple products that deliver our customers the best installed value,” said Steve. “The company help with more than just pipe fittings. They have trough valves that don’t stick, which have large flow rates compared to brass valves and they have a lifetime warranty. “Farmers can experience problems every day and our staff can help solve these problems and give advice, fast service and suggest which products are needed. “Our specialist water system team visit clients on-farm and advise on water issues. They can test every trough, valve and pump and show you what is wrong and help rectify the problems. “All the products we have manufactured in the past and in future come from feedback of what our clients need. With a range of over 1000 different products, loyal customers and a dedicated team, Hansen is poised for the new challenges ahead. “We are far from slowing down and saw the release of a number of new products last year. All of these products have been designed for high performance whilst still staying true to Bert’s original philosophy of ‘keep it simple’. “Primarily we are here because we have loyal customers and attending the field days in the regions helps us to get feedback on what our clients would like to see improved. “After 60 years in business we are extremely proud to be a New Zealand owned and operated business.”

MAke 2016 YOUR YEAR! NorthTec delivers a wide range of primary industries programmes across the region, from Rodney to the Far North. Agriculture Our agricultural training takes place on real, working farms, with knowledgeable tutors who have spent their lives working the land. The learning environment is highly practical and is often delivered in a wool shed, workshop, at the yards, dairy shed or paddock.
Hunting & Pest control In this hands-on programme you’ll gain practical experience in pest control through shooting and using traps and poisons. You’ll also learn to identify flora and fauna, how to navigate in remote bush and develop habits for communicating, problem-solving and working safely and effectively.
Forestry Our forestry qualifications are recognised all over New Zealand and have been put together in conjunction with the industry – so we know our graduates have the skills and attributes wanted by employers. We’ll teach you a range of skills so you will be able to work in both forestry and the associated wood processing industries.
Horticulture and sustainable rural development Our horticulture and sustainable rural development (SRD) programmes give you the opportunity to gain skills that you can apply to industry or to developing sustainable practices within your own community. A career in horticulture will last a lifetime and create transferable skills, giving you a range of job opportunities, while our popular SRD programmes are designed to teach the skills needed to develop land and landbased enterprises in a sustainable manner.

Record high for export revenue
NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES February 2016

by Andy Bryenton
Beef and lamb make up a big part of the traditional Kiwi diet — an old fashioned roast taking pride of place on many local tables. Now figures from Beef and Lamb NZ reveal that the rest of the world are also enamoured of our grass-fed goodness, with record export numbers tallied for the start of the 2015–16 season. The tale of the tape tells the story — demand is up across our major trading partners, with a more savvy clientele in North America and Asia enjoying a bite of Kiwi lamb, beef, mutton and veal. And while per-tonne values are down this season, the added boost in volume has contributed to big gains in both markets. American gourmands are still tucking in to Kiwi meat at a level 33% higher than the five year average. While this is a good sign of a healthy demand, the weakening NZ dollar did little to offset a drop in beef’s average value. At the same time, Asian markets were hungry for more, with 31,000 tonnes of beef and veal shipping out between October and December. That’s a 55% increase in shipments and a 7.3% rise in the average per-tonne value — a clear indication that while fears of a slowing economy in China may have played the devil with global financial markets, the emerging middle class of the world’s second largest economy are secure in their desire for top-quality foodstuffs. North Asia also displayed a strong demand for lamb and, along with the European Union, Asian consumers helped push the total lamb export takeup to a record setting $589 million in the October to December quarter. Once again, the sheer volume of exports to the north Asian region masked a decrease in the average value. Chilled rather than frozen lamb was a better performer during this period — a
category which made up more than a quarter of exports. While farm gate prices for lamb and mutton were slightly weaker this season — due in part to dry conditions and high production numbers, farm gate prices for cattle remained robust. With export volumes up, farmers hope that international demand remains buoyant — while the results of a recent survey give a shot in the arm to the domestic market. Monday February 15 is national lamb day and survey respondents ranked a nice roast leg of lamb as New Zealand’s

THE SIDE-BY-SIDE THAT’S GOT IT ALL
Keeping ahead in their field It’s been a big year of expansion for Northland-based business Gas and Tyre — going from strength to strength as they open new branches and reach out to new customers.
1100 EFI NEW UPGRADE MODEL!!
As the booming forestry industry and the demands of serving road freight operators, rural contractors — and of course the private motorist — provide challenges, they also open up doors of opportunity for this forward thinking company. With a firm belief in the North, a solid base in the Field Days’ home town of Dargaville, and a dedication to forging a hard-working team with great skills, there’s a buoyant sense of optimism on all four Gas and Tyre forecourts, with exciting news of further expansions just around the corner. It’s been a hard uphill road to where Gas and Tyre sit today — coming into Field Days as defending champions of the coveted ‘best site’ crown. Strategic alliances with international heavyweights like Nokian forestry tyres and motorsport innovators Mickey Thompson have seen the bright orange and black brand spread to all corners of the Northland map. Now they are looking ahead, with an engaging and eye-popping display coming together for Field Days 2016. The Gas and Tyre way of doing things has certainly become popular with their customers, and it focusses heavily on the strength of an integral and knowledgeable team. Visit their site and you’ll be able to tap into a wealth of information about all things which run on wheels, from the smallest ATV to the biggest skidders and tractors. It’s truly surprising what can be achieved in terms of safety and savings when the right rubber is fitted to your machine! And with mag wheels, a reliable gas supply, and a full-time fleet service as well, this is one company which is far from finished ‘going places’.

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A disaster in the making? Into the second month of 2016 and we continue to see the global slide in dairy auction prices. Whole milk powder has dropped 10.4 per cent in the last three auctions, down to US$1,952 per tonne. This has been compounded by AMF hydrous milk fat dipping a steep 6.4 per cent to US$3,486 per tonne. Fonterra’s monthly advance payment of $3.15 with the season finishing on May 31, means that a 25 per cent sharemilker is faced with an income of just 78 cents per kilo of milk solids. And that is disastrous. On a wider scale we could now be seeing a major change in world trading power with oil dropping further and further per barrel. The price of diesel in New Zealand is now down to levels not seen for many years. We see China forging new trade partnerships with Iran, with both countries agreeing to build a new railway link between them, restoring for trade the legendary Silk Route of history. China is cooperating with Iran on nuclear energy and investing in new nuclear plants in the UK. China has also signed more than a dozen trade agreements with Iran and
economic commentators predict that Iran will work and trade with independent countries. This could suit New Zealand. While America and Europe are continuing with their trade embargoes against Russia and while Europe is plagued with migrant problems, Russia and China are cooperating quietly, setting up trade agreements with not only the middle eastern countries, but Africa as well. I believe we are seeing a major shift with many countries seeking to avoid western bloc meddling in their affairs. The Gulf States are seeking strategic relations with Russia and China. Russia claims a 4% annual growth in agriculture production. Russia and China are carrying out large joint ventures such as construction of huge dairy farms. China’s underlying strategy is that cooperation is the only way to find peace.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
ENCOURAGING COLOMBIAN FARMERS BY ANN MORGAN A group of 22 South American farmers, government and industry representatives from Colombia visited Northland recently as part of a joint New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs/Colombian Government aid development programme.
T
he group visited the Northland Agricultural Research Farm in Dargaville to see how New Zealand farming is similar to theirs. Due to the high altitude they come from, one of the pasture species that they grow is kikuyu, which is also widely spread across Northland. “It was a great day out with the visitors on the farm and it was a huge learning experience for them to see how we manage our pasture,” said farm manager, Karla Frost. “They really enjoyed learning how it’s possible to manage a kikuyu system and were looking forward to taking back some of our practices and putting
them into action in their own country.” The initiative aims to improve the productivity and net incomes of small and medium size dairy farms in the Colombian high tropics through the adaptation of relevant New Zealand farm management practices and systems, as well as to enhance the capacity of Colombia’s extension and vocational training systems. The agreement for the aid programme was signed in April 2015 with the Colombian government represented by their Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and their main agriculture research agency Corpoica. Ltd who lead a consortia of New Zealand organisations that have been engaged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the New Zealand Aid programme. New Zealand is providing expert advice from various industry experts on all areas of farming and dairy value chain systems including on-farm production, milk quality management as well as assisting with the development of supporting training, extension and research programmes. “It is a four-year project aiming to help them become more competitive as dairy farmers and aiming to improve their productivity,” said project consultant Maria Elena Duter. “A typical dairy farm over there may be two to three hectares, running two to three cows. “The farms are between around 2,500 and 3,200 metres altitude and are probably similar to dairy farms in the 1920s New Zealand — they are still mostly milking by hand. “This project is to help them adopt improved practices and the end result will be increased profitability which will assist the small farmers as well as their communities. “Northland is the best place to learn how kikuyu can be managed as well as to understand how other pasture species can be established to help their farms become more productive and improve the quality of milk for a better standard of living. “The farmers are getting just enough money to live on at present. They have gardens mainly growing potatoes,
chickens, and often guinea pigs. They live well however their incomes are limited. “The farmers work very hard to leave a legacy for the generations to come and the information our country is giving them is very practical in helping them achieve better results,” said Mrs Duter. One of the visitors, Giovanna Benavieds said: “It is extraordinary being part of this project, not just for my professional growth but the potential to have a social impact on the region where I work in the dairy sector with small farm holders working with the Indigenous Association. ”We are very excited as the farmers are very innovation orientated and want to produce a lot of milk and can see the opportunity presented to them through this. They have put their heart and passion into the process. “We are not going to return home and tell them this is the recipe, we are going to teach them why things should be done, how to measure, how to access and how to evaluate and once they understand why they are doing this it will be easier for them to change the way they do things like how they milk. “They do a lot but haven’t been able to decide which things to implement and why. The knowledge learnt inside a family will be handed down the generations through the years. “New Zealand has been perfect to visit. It was great visiting Northland. We had a really good time here and learnt lots of valuable information and we appreciate all that we have been taught.”

Keeping it cool Chill Technology Ltd in Whangarei are leading specialists in farm vat cooling in Northland, installing Daikin Inverter Scroll Water Chillers that do an impressive job at chilling water to cool milk to the required temperature. “Daikin Water Chillers are not new technology”, says Chilltech director Richard Crum. “They have been successfully implemented in the wine, stone and pip fruit industries and of course the air conditioning arena, for many years and have been extensively tested and developed by Daikin.” The highly efficient system with its energy efficiency, minimal starting current and short payback times makes this system unique. With the inclusion of the Inverter Scroll Compressor which not only provides a soft start but also the ability to ‘over speed’ for peaks in production means that the system matches its performance with the demand that is placed on it. “Importantly this chiller operates on R410a refrigerant which has no phaseout schedule, unlike other commonly used

refrigerants in the farming sector, and it has zero ozone depletion potential. It also comes complete with a factory built ‘all on board’ hydronic system including pump and expansion tank providing simplified installation. ‘The inverter compressor continuously adjusts to actual demand. Fewer powerconsuming starts and stops result in decreased energy consumption — potentially up to 30%, and more stable temperatures. ‘Scroll compressors consist of two scrolls, one is fixed while the other orbits eccentrically without rotating. They are designed for small and medium capacity systems and provide constant reliability and high efficiency throughout its service life’. If you’re considering an upgrade to your farm vat system, give Richard and the team at Chilltech a call.

It’s more than wool which keeps sheep dry. Prolan NZ has enhanced the use of lanolin in sheep’s wool to manufacture industrial lanolin lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-seize greases which stop rust. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware. Once Prolan is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long term protection. Bikes can be waterblasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value. There are also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and loaders chassis. The significant cost savings
to fleet owners are far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust, less downtime on maintenance, fewer part replacements and increased resale values. Visit our site at the Northland Fieldays Site: 282B. Sights on strong wool

A new collaboration between The New Zealand Merino Company and the Ministry for Primary Industries have announced aims to deliver premiums for New Zealand’s strong wool sector — a partnership that could see an additional $335 million contribution towards New Zealand’s economy by 2025. “’Wool Unleashed’, or W3, is a new seven-year, $22.1 million Primary Growth Partnership programme led by NZM that will derive greater value from New Zealand’s strong wool, says Justine Gilliland, Director Investment Programmes at the Ministry for Primary Industries. “This programme aims to deliver longterm economic benefits by securing a premium for New Zealand strong wool, increasing on-shore processing, and lifting the returns of the strong wool sector overall. “The PGP is at the forefront of boosting the value, productivity, profitability and sustainability of our primary industries, and W3 represents these same core values. This programme has the potential to deliver significant benefits and transformation for the strong wool industry to capture value through the eyes of the consumer and respond to the declining profitability and volume trends. “The PGP and those involved are committed to New Zealand’s long term, sustainable economic growth, with MPI and industry committing approximately $746 million in 21 PGP programmes over time.
MPI and NZM have signed a contract so the W3 programme can formally begin. NZM Chief Executive John Brakenridge says W3 will apply NZM’s experience with fine and mid-micron wool in establishing contracts with premium brand partners and developing new uses and markets to strong wool. “We’ve already had considerable success in these areas through the New Zealand Sheep Industry Transformation Project, our first PGP programme, which is focussed on fine and mid-micron wool and is due to wrapup in 2017. “NZSTX was about using product differentiation to generate better grower returns for fine wool fibre, meat and other products, and production science projects in genetics, animal health and forage production. “We’ll be looking to build on our success in NZSTX to date by turning our attention to the strong wool industry and drive increases in profitability across the value chain. “The expected benefits from the W3 programme will create a strong foundation and path for future growth across the wool sector.

ERIN MICHELL IS 21-YEARS-OLD AND IS THE ASSISTANT HERD MANAGER ON A 280 HECTARE DAIRY FARM OF 670 COWS WITH A 50 BALE ROTARY IN OTAKAIRANGI.
“I
grew up in a farming family, and most of my life was on this farm,” said Erin. “We moved off the farm 10 years ago and my dad went beef farming for a while. Mum and dad are now retired from farming and teaching agriculture — the thing they know well. It was quite amusing for everyone when I came back to the same owners on the farm. “I became a qualified beauty therapist but decided not to continue that career path and came back to farming. We run mostly friesian cattle and the land is flat with a small amount of rolling. “I completed my level four certificate in agriculture with Taratahi and was the top student in my class. I really enjoyed
doing my course through them as it gave me the freedom to learn through work experience during the course and the tutor came to me and fitted around my schedule. I didn’t have to go into a course everyday and this was really helpful for study.” Erin says there are many interesting and exciting parts to farming. “Having a different thing to do every day both in the sunshine and the rain is really enjoyable. I love the rain and working with animals. Even on the really bad days there is something that will make you smile — even on the worst possible day. I love how much exercise you get. I have lost about 40 kilograms since I started, it really helps with my

fitness. There are so many fun parts to the job like cuddling calves. “We milk twice a day except the lame cows are on once a day to help improve their health faster. If things get too dry or we get low on grass we milk every 16 hours but we haven’t had to do this yet as the rain came thankfully. “We do off-grazing once the calves are older. I feed them every day and we supplement with a variety of feed such as palm, grass silage, maize, turnips and chicory.” The farm is attached to a mudfish reserve and a Department of Conservation block with a large kiwi population. “There is a good drainage system in place so we don’t have flooding and because of the kiwis we have really good dog control. I have seen a few around, it is really cool. It is a new thing for me.

“We do a bit of fencing, tractor work and feed out a lot of silage and different things. I do the spraying, and during calving season I pick up the calves. It’s a good workout and really entertaining — especially the tiny ones. “I joined the local Young Farmers’ group in the past year as it is an opportunity to get me out of the house and off the farm. Farming is a lifestyle and you need to be committed 24 hours a day — seven days a week. Young Farmers gives me the opportunity to socialise. I am also in a bowling league and play every week with my parents. Erin participated in the Young Farmer of the Year competition and came eighth for the region last year. “The experience was a whole lot of fun. I entered to see what it was like and will enter again soon to have a proper go at it. I learnt I need to learn how to
crutch a sheep and I had no idea at all how to do it. It was a good experience and it tested my knowledge and I learnt a few things whilst I was at it. “I recommend if others want to farm the one thing I always ask is ‘do you want to be covered in shit every day because you are guaranteed to get dirty’. It is a lifestyle not a career. If you are going to go farming you need to be able to commit to it. The late nights and really early mornings too. With farming, times can get tough but I believe there is always a bright side. There is down sides and up sides to everything and I try to look forward. Things will pick up eventually, you will come out the other side. If that doesn’t work surround yourself with some friendly cows, they will always cheer you up.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
A fresh start
Data released on January 22, 2016 by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, confirms the rural real estate market is now reasonably active compared to the same period last season. Activity has returned to more normal levels nationwide, after stalling for the first half of the season as the market adjusted to the new reality of the dairy industry. Nationwide, the REINZ Dairy Farm Price Index, which is based on price per hectare, is down on the same period last season by about 11 percent. I have had a busy season so far, doing more farm viewings than usual, especially just lately. Until recently, industry uncertainty plus a lack of a benchmark market value had made it difficult to pull an agreement together.
Buyers were sitting on the fence waiting for the market to adjust. Since 2016 commenced, we are now starting to see farms sell and historically we often get good activity in February as buyers are keen to get settled for the new season. I recently joined Farmlands Real Estate, mainly because I enjoy providing service to farmers. Farmlands was born more than fifty years ago and is now one of New Zealand’s largest cooperatives. It is a top 20 New Zealand company with more than 1,200 staff and 83 stores, providing a full range of services

from finance to fertiliser. Farmlands Real Estate is well established in the South Island with a big chunk of the market share, so expanding the real estate business into the North is a natural progression. A large percentage of Northland farm buyers are coming from outside the region now, as Northland farms are more affordable for first farm buyers coming from high value areas and represent an opportunity hard to find elsewhere. I
now have better access to a nationwide database of buyers, plus the marketing opportunity offered by the monthly nationwide Farmlander magazine. I have an office at Farmlands Dargaville and have recently employed an assistant, Brad Bishara, so that I can provide better service. We will be on-site at the Farmlands Real Estate stand at the Northland Field Days, March 3-5, 2016 so make sure you call in and say gidday — we would love to see you.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
ADVERTORIAL
Programme to Paradise by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
There is a vast difference between a natural nutrient found in a food or plant and its synthetic counterpart artificially created in a lab. Each new year brings the opportunity to make a New Year’s resolution and if farming is in your blood, the best call you could make for 2016 and into the future is to bring Mother Nature back onto your farm; together with all the wonderful free natural capital she provides for better production, a better environment and a wholesome life, for you and your family. Farming has always been a natural process; you take a natural man, a natural woman, natural animals and if they are ruminant animals you feed them natural grass, on naturally good soil, with plenty of natural sunshine, natural water, natural micro-organisms, natural minerals and natural worms. This is a good natural formula. When you take this brave new step, in my experience, the first good feeling you will have is freedom; freedom from the chemical treadmill. The next good thought will be you and Mother Nature are working together, for a better future
DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads
for all. Rather than bombarding your farm with nitrates, phosphate and potentially harmful chemicals, Agrissentials will set you up with multi-mineral, microbial-rich fertilisers, bringing health and vitality back to your soil. Mother Nature’s formula for growing a plant is minerals, microbes, water and sunshine plus you need those 16 essential minerals, to get the job done. Agrissentials have all those minerals in a completely natural form. That means we know they are plant available and thus unlike their synthetic counterparts we know they will be taken up by the plant, which then passes them onto the animal or human, promoting optimum health. The microbes are the first creatures to dine at the mineral table, converting the natural minerals from the rock dust, fish and seaweed, into a plant available form, wrapping the minerals in humus, so they don’t leach from the soil. The plant roots take up the minerals from
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER
the humus when required — humus also holds water for the plant to uptake, ensuring good water retention quality in your soil to help through those dry periods. This is the natural system of mineral release to the plant. It is the ultimate system and is recognised immediately at the cellular level of the plant for uptake and good healthy growth. This system has been operating for 460 million years — it is the tried and true system! When we look at the planet’s natural forests, natural jungles, natural savannahs and the oldest farm in the world, the Serengeti Plains, we see that most of their essential mineral uptake is sourced directly from the atmosphere i.e. 45 percent carbon, as carbon dioxide, 45 percent oxygen, 6 percent hydrogen and 1.5 percent nitrogen all freely available directly and also via microbial activity. All other essential minerals come from animal and bird manures, recycling of vegetation and other mineral sources, such as eroded rock dust. In the natural system, minerals are converted and stored in the organic matter (humus) for uptake, on request. You cannot get a better soil fertility programme than this. For artificial nitrogen/urea junkies, the atmosphere we live and breathe in is 76
percent natural nitrogen, approximately 33,000 tonnes of it, per hectare. There is no cost factor to this supply of nitrogen. It is made readily available to plants via the micro-organisms and is stored in the organic matter (humus) of the soil, ready for uptake by the plant, on demand. Plus being completely natural it does not adversely affect the environment or your pocket! A farmer we know, who is running two reasonably sized dairy farms and spreading urea, could quite easily purchase a new Haines Hunter 6m runabout with all the bells and whistles including a trailer, every year, just by accessing his nitrogen requirements free, straight out of the atmosphere. How great would that be?! Team Agrissentials wishes everybody throughout NZ a happy and prosperous 2016. Our team is looking to working alongside you this year to ensure your success. Freephone 0800 THE KEY that’s 0800 843 539 today for a FREE INFO PACK to find out how you can reap the benefits from working with nature without compromising on production or you can contact your friendly representative Mike Jujnovich (Northland) on 021 669 059 or Angela Young (Far North) on 027 886 3570.

Partnership agreement welcomed
31
The signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement in Auckland is a significant step towards reducing the amount of tariff and nontariff barriers on New Zealand red meat exports, according to the chairmen of Beef and Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association. Trade Minister Todd McClay signed the TPP Agreement with the 11 member countries, including from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam. “This deal is critical for New Zealand sheep and beef farmers and meat exporters, keeping us competitive in key markets,” said Beef and Lamb New Zealand chairman James Parsons. The New Zealand sheep and beef sector exports close to 90 percent of its production totalling $7.4 billion, on which we paid $323 million of tariffs in 2014. Nearly one-third of those total exports go to TPP member countries,
with a significant proportion of those tariffs paid in Japan — $77 million — where applied tariffs on our beef exports are 38.5 percent. The TPP agreement will eliminate, over time, the vast majority of tariff costs on New Zealand red meat exports to TPP member countries. Based on 2014 exports, this would be a reduction in tariffs paid of around NZ$72 million which ensures that New Zealand red meat products will remain competitive in TPP markets. “The TPP deal also includes ways to address complex non-tariff barriers, which will prove useful in terms of opening markets and ensuring that
they stay open,” said MIA chairman Bill Falconer. The TPP is expected to enter into force within two years, once all member countries have completed their legislatives processes. BLNZ and MIA work together to improve access for sheep and beef products to overseas markets, including by providing in-depth analysis to support the government’s trade negotiation efforts.

Featuring sheep, dogs and logs The rides are free for the duration of the event and begin from just opposite the Northland Field Days HQ on the corner of RD1 road and Farmlands Road. The Tractor Pull event will be held over the three days of intense competition. Events include the business house event and the three-legged race. At the Trutest site, a competition has the prize of ‘your weight’ in meat. Quad skills will be tested with competitors taking turns getting a quad and trailer around an obstacle course in the fastest time possible. The event that is open for anybody above the age of 16. Organisers have made it even more affordable to attend by dropping adult ticket prices and introducing a new family pass this year. Those aged over 16 will pay $12 to enter the event, instead of $15 while groups with two adults and up to three children will pay no more than $30 to
spend the day at the event. “This makes entry more affordable than most other attractions and events in the country at a time when entry prices are going up rather than down, and was done so organisers could give back to the community,” said Mr. Duggan. “I know people who have been to every Northland Field Days since its inaugural event in 1984 and they have been baked by sun, soaked by rain and chilled by cyclone-force winds — we need to do something to say thank you.” “And with exhibitor numbers almost being at capacity there’s going to be plenty of people who need to come more than one day.” Approximately 90% of the sites had been booked as early as December 2015 according to event organiser Meagan Edmonds, with exhibitors pouring in much faster than previous years and offering a wider range of products and services.

Fertility index improvement
37
The accuracy of the national animal evaluation system is set for a boost, thanks to a change in the processing of fertility data. Fertility is a key trait within Breeding Worth, the industry index which ranks cows and bulls on their ability to breed profitable and efficient replacement dairy heifers. NZ Animal Evaluation Limited and LIC identified the need to correct an element within the fertility model as part of their work to transfer the animal evaluation system from LIC to the wholly owned DairyNZ subsidiary NZAEL. “We found that some farm mating data records weren’t being correctly utilised in the fertility model, and this was impacting the accuracy of the breeding values,” says NZAEL manager, Dr Jeremy Bryant. “The change will result in an increase in the accuracy of sire fertility breeding values. There will be some NZ Animal Evaluation Limited manager Jeremy Bryant movements in the fertility rankings for high profile bulls, and as a mating data from first calving heifers result, the rankings of their daughters. who subsequently failed to present “This particular modification to for mating. data processing is a very big win for LIC animal evaluation unit manager, the industry since anything we can Rachel Bloxham, also welcomed the do to increase accuracy in the animal improvement which will ultimately evaluation system is welcome,” he says. boost the accuracy of the BW system. Young bulls, whose daughters “LIC have been working closely with milked for the first time this season, DairyNZ on the transfer of animal will be among those most affected. evaluation to NZAEL and support the Dr Bryant says this is because of the work which ultimately builds a stronger way the system worked on categorising BW for farmers,” she said.
“The transfer has really given us an opportunity to spring clean the entire evaluation system that has been in place for many years. The fertility model will now be better at comparing a noncycling cow or heifer to its cycling herd mates on the farm so that we can give attribution where deserved.” The improvement will form part of the February Animal Evaluation run, which

The importance of irrigation
Having a good irrigation system can make a big difference to your farm or lifestyle block and can even benefit the wider community. Pastures are more productive when properly irrigated and maintained which means more feed, fewer breakdowns occur, and systems are simpler to manage. Applying the correct amount of water at the right time will allow for maximum growth of the pasture and decrease the likelihood of putting stress on the pastures therefore slowing the growth. It is equally important to make sure that too much water is not being used as this will draw out valuable nutrients which are expensive. Maintaining the irrigation system is important to avoid breakdowns and leaks. Leaks can reduce the operating pressure meaning the system will not apply water evenly, leading to patchy crops. Watering tracks and other non-productive areas wastes water with no returns. For areas and seasons where water is scarce, remember to allow for water restrictions and make a list of the areas that are a priority. Plan ahead so these do not impact too much on production. Of course the person responsible for the irrigation system must comply with all rules and conditions set by the
D & A Nisbet Contracting Co Ltd
governing organisations of the water supply such as the regional council or the irrigation scheme. With new demands on water nationally and regionally due to new technology improving the way most farmers use irrigation, being aware of the most water efficient processes is
essential and will save both time and money in the long run. From centre pivots to border dyke and rotary boom the system must maximise the amount of dry matter grown whilst minimising the amount of water expended.

Protecting waterways Fencing waterways protects freshwater from nutrients, effluent and sediment by excluding stock and creating a buffer between water and the land. Fencing will help to maintain and improve water quality and create a habitat for birds and freshwater species. Fencing waterways is a priority under the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord. All stock must be excluded from any permanently flowing rivers, streams, drains and springs, more than a metre wide and 30cm deep by May 2017. All lakes must have all stock permanently excluded by May 2017. Any significant wetlands, as identified in a Regional Plan or Policy Statement, must also have all stock permanently excluded by May 2017. Check with your dairy company to see if you have one on your property. When planning your waterway fencing it needs to be far enough back to allow for movement or flooding of the waterway. Start by mapping your waterways and create a fencing plan. Consider the overall layout of your farm, along with protecting waterways, new fencing can improve grazing management and stock control. The area between the fence and waterway will slow runoff to ensure as much bacteria, phosphorus and sediment as possible is filtered out before entering the waterway. The four main options are: a grass filter strip between fence and waterway has the additional benefit of being low cost with a small loss of grazing land. It does need weed control, there is no shading of the stream, minimal habitat for bird and aquatic life and there is minimal bank stabilisation without deeper rooted vegetation. Low planting between the fence and waterway gives the benefit of stream bank stability. There is a small loss of grazing land, it helps control weed growth and gives shade and cover for fish and insect life. Weed control is required and there is minimal habitat for birdlife. Full planting between the fence and waterway helps reduce drain maintenance. This is an attractive asset for your farm, provides shade and keeps

water cool and it increases habitat for birds. It is a higher cost and a larger loss of grazing land. This option needs weed control for at least two to three years and may require animal pest control. The fourth option is extending the fenced area to include seeps, wetlands, swamps and springs. This reduces stock losses and provides habitat for bird life. It may result in loss of grazing land, needs stringent weed control and is a higher cost if planting is required. The only acceptable figure for fatalities and serious injuries in the forestry industry is zero, says Fiona Ewing, the national safety director for the Forestry Industry Safety Council. The council was set up last year following an increasing number of fatal accidents and serious injuries across the industry spectrum. This year FISC will focus on ensuring industry players understand what’s required of them under the new Health and Safety at Work Act, which comes into force in April. There were in fact fewer deaths and injuries last year with Worksafe NZ reporting that serious injuries halved to 78 in 2015 from 160 in 2013, with three forestry workers killed last year. But the council says while there were fewer casualties, there’s still a lot of work to do to reach the goal of zero fatalities. “The trend is going in the right direction but we can’t rest on our laurels,” says Ms Ewing adding that FISC has been working to ensure sustained safety improvements in all areas of forestry. “There’s a risk that with fatalities dropping from their 2013 peak people
will think we can tick safety off as being sorted. “Experience tell us that the minute we take our eye off the ball those fatality and serious injury rates will start climbing back up again.” Forest owners led a massive overhaul of the industry in 2014 after funding an independent investigation into the industry’s accident record that found forestry was the most dangerous industry to work in, with more than 1,000 serious
injuries and 32 deaths between 2008 and 2013. Forest Industry Contractors’ chief executive John Stulen said with the help of new technology, forest owners and contractors have since led positive safety changes, including the establishment of the FISC. “We’ve gone way ahead and our members have led the pro-active change to identifying risk more actively, getting a mind set in crews that safety is the most important thing.

LIVESTOCK or there are white ones with paler markings. The cattle have real eye appeal. “They are a hardy breed. It’s like the saying when the going gets tough the tough get going. We have a mix of grasses and it is believed that galloways with their excellent foraging ability also graze the widest range of grasses. The cattle are great converters so you can put them into rubbishy paddocks and they still put on the beef. I believe their meat has superior taste and tenderness. “They are not a huge animal. They are similar to an angus. They have common ancestry. White Galloways are naturally polled with no horns. Their calves are lower in birth weight and are easy calving. Dairy farmers are now enjoying using galloways over their dairy cows due to this and the markings make it easy for them to tell which is dairy and which is beef.” Tracy says the cattle have a great maternal instinct and are known for their longevity. “Providing they are kept in good condition they can still be producing a calf at 18 — years-old. They are a traditional British breed but are actually Scottish. Anything from Scotland is physically hardy. They are good doers and easy to care for. We find they have good temperaments which is important. “In the winter we will give them hay if we are getting short on grass but that’s all the supplement feed we use.” “I am a member of the New Zealand Galloway Society and show my cattle at the local A and P shows. Tracy is also a Reiki practitioner and teacher which is a natural alternative health modality for both humans and animals. “I am a passionate animal lover and I enjoy giving Reiki to animals as well as people. My cows are my best customers and people are welcome to bring their pets for a session. I believe an animal is far more open to receiving Reiki compared to a human because they don’t have the conditioning that we have. Tracy says animals can still go to a vet for treatment and have medication. She believes the treatments complement each other.

Tracy has a boutique farmstay and in mid-February she is opening a retreat centre with a spiritual focus also on the farm. “The bed and breakfast farmstay is for guests to enjoy the peace and serenity of the farm and enjoy the experience of the cattle and goats we have here. The homestead, which has the look of a traditional style from yesteryear, was built on the feng shui principles and the Golden Light Retreat Centre will be available for running workshops on people’s inner well being and teaching Reiki.” She is also part of a new group who plan to utilise Oxville Farms in Hikurangi, an artisan meat processing plant which has recently opened. “It means we can take our prime stock there for processing. We are interested in being part of a group of like minded people who breed traditional or smaller breeds that do take longer to mature when compared to European breeds. We believe that our traditional beef has superior taste and flavour. I also believe that there will be a demand for that traditional beef in higher end restaurants and their customers will be able to choose a galloway steak from the menu. “People are welcome to come and see the animals on the farm. Fishing off Glinks Gully turned out to be a day to remember for local Ben Wade and his fishing partner, Johnny Kuljish. Off the west coast, the pair hooked up virtually simultaneously. Ben had just had a strike from a 151 kilogram marlin, when Johnny hooked a 156 kilogram fish. It took the pair about an hour to land their respective catches “It was awesome to hook up at the same time,“ said Ben. “We had to keep crossing over each other during the fight which made it that much more difficult. We won’t forget this day in a hurry.” They weighed the marlin in at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club weigh station. Game fish as well as a wider range of species seem to be duplicating the excellent summer months of last year, according to reports collated by the New Zealand sports Fishing council, the governing body of angling clubs. The council recorded catches of yellowfin tuna, mahimahi, kingfish and swordfish. Including ‘far North boat Baru’ which came back into Houhora to weigh a striped marlin weighing 79.8kg, a yellowfin tuna weighed in at Whangaroa

Eleven–year–old Jackson Baker was credited with his first striped marlin weighing in at 73.kg at Tutukaka. NZSFC was formed to support the million or so New Zealanders that fish. ‘A key role is to advocate for responsible

The council conducts education programmes, commissions and funds fisheries research projects, and participates in fisheries management. Soil Matters with Peter Burton How magnesium deficiencies can be sorted Some things change over time, and others don’t, with one certainty being the daily demand for magnesium by dairy cows, particularly prior to calving. Without adequate daily intake of magnesium a wide range of health problems occur — at one end of the scale lower milk solid production, at the other end unnecessary deaths. The factor most mentioned, however, is the time wasted in spring dealing with sick animals, and the sense of frustration that arises from having followed best advice, and yet the problems persist. There are, however, a growing number of farmers for whom these issues simply don’t exist. For them an animal requiring treatment is worthy of note because it’s a rare occurrence, and they operate properties where Golden Bay dolomite is applied once a year, usually in autumn. Although it is true that older animals, particularly if they are a Jersey or have a Jersey background, are more likely to suffer, our experience is that even purebred Jersey herds on such pasture have a similarly low incidence of metabolic disorders in spring. Weather conditions also play a major role in calcium/magnesium related problems. Leaf magnesium concentrations vary, being highest in periods of direct
sunlight. At these times the leaf content of pasture grasses may be as high as 0.25%, and animals fed well on this feed are receiving sufficient magnesium each day. Magnesium concentrations decline in periods of wet, cold weather. Animals may eat less and, if another source of magnesium is not available, problems can still arise. The most effective supplement is high quality meadow hay harvested from land that also receives an annual application of dolomite. Hay contains the fibre essential for good rumen function, as well as useful energy and oils contained in the seed. As one farmer recently stated, “No matter how good the salad is, it’s great to have some bread and pastry.” And where hay is made available, animals only eat sufficient to meet their requirements at that time. Another reason for the effectiveness of dolomite spread at 220kg/ha in autumn is the calcium that is also applied. Calcium/magnesium related metabolics are nearly always the result of an imbalance of the two elements,
and because dolomite contains both in the ratio required by grasses its effect is extraordinary. There is also the obvious advantage of receiving magnesium in every mouthful of feed rather than relying on it being provided via the water system, or as dust on the leaf of a plant. As Professor Tom Walker wrote, “It makes good sense to me to correct animal deficiencies through the soil and the plant.” When bulk deliveries of dolomite direct to farm started twenty-six years ago, most went to what were large herds at the time, those of over three hundred cows, as even on highly magnesium deficient country a single autumn application over the whole property markedly reduced the incidence of problems, reducing the reliance on variable intakes from dusting or water in troughs. A further advantage of dolomite is the pH or ‘liming’ effect. Dolomite contains 11.5% magnesium and 24% calcium, and has a slightly higher liming
effect than the same quantity of lime. 28 tonnes of dolomite has the liming effect of approximately 30 tonnes of high quality agricultural lime. It is available throughout the country and, if not already in stock at the major companies, it can be delivered in whatever quantity is required within a matter of days. It may be added to a non-nitrogen fertiliser mix or spread separately with a typical truck and trailer load sufficient for 127ha. There are those that state that dolomite is expensive. When higher production and less deaths are factored in, dolomite is one of the few fertiliser products that provides an almost immediate financial benefit. However the most satisfying aspect may be the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your valuable animals are receiving the benefits from the most effective magnesium fertiliser available and which is locally sourced. For more information call Peter on 0800 4Dolomite, 0800 436 566.

Hoof Print
with Fred Hoekstra
Last month I was talking about the importance of preventative hoof trimming. This month I would like to go through the three steps of preventative hoof trimming, also known as functional hoof trimming. The aim is to have the cow standing correctly on the ground. If the toe is too long the cow will lean back on her heel.
The claws also need to be flat to give more stability, especially the inner claw, as once the hoof is trimmed correctly,

the weight will be distributed evenly across both claws. Yet many inner claws are concaved and will ‘fall over’. I often use the analogy of ladies who walk on high heels. Some of those heels are as thin as my little finger. How come they can still walk in those shoes and not fall over? Because they have the stability in the toe, it is just the same with our cows. The toe needs to be flat for stability, the heel gives height. Therefore we want both claws to be the same height in order to distribute the weight of the cow equally over the two claws. Step one: We start on the inner claw. This is the smallest of the two claws and the closest in shape and size to what we want to achieve. Once we have trimmed the inner claw we use it as an example for the outer claw to make it the same. The length of the claw is crucial. It needs to be 7.5cm in length. A small cow can be slightly shorter but you would be best to stick with the 7.5cm. Once you have cut the claw at the right length, the thickness of the cut is the thickness of the sole on the toe part of that claw. The toe needs to be 7mm thick but the heel needs to be left as high as possible. The more you take off the heel area on
the inner claw the more you will have to take off the outer claw to match the inner claw later. Step two: Once you have finished the inner claw you can do the same on the outer claw — cut the claw to 7.5 cm and make the toe 7mm thick. This time you need to trim the whole claw down to the same height as the inner claw. Make sure the claws are flat. If the claw is uneven the cow will feel like she is walking on a rocking horse. Now that the claws are balanced, they will bear the weight evenly across both claws. Step three: All we need to do now is scallop out the inside of the claw, being careful not to go too far forward. And that is what preventative hoof trimming is about. Every cow should be trimmed in this way whether she is lame or not. For lame cows there are another two steps in the process but only after those three steps have been completed. Learning to trim like this really should be done under supervision of a tutor. If you are keen to get better at trimming just give us a call on 0800 833 463 to find out when our next training courses are or visit our website www.veehof.co.nz.

is what farmers say when we show them this photo of an effluent pond.
“You never see the sky reflected in an effluent pond.“ This reaction is understandable. The farmers we talk to are smart, using expensive machines to break and stir and separate the crust. But despite their efforts, they never get results that look anything like the photo we show them. The photo is real and not enhanced in any way. But how is this clear, free-flowing effluent possible? FIGHTING THE WRONG BATTLE: Though farmers battle against pond crust and sludge, these solids are merely symptoms of the real problem. The cause of the crust are microscopic creatures that live below the surface – ANAEROBIC BACTERIA. Anaerobic Bacteria are microbes that thrive in an atmosphere that is dark and
At Site 250b Northland Field Days
devoid of oxygen. To create these conditions, Anaerobic Bacteria send effluent fibers to the pond’s surface to form a crust that blocks the light and oxygen that threaten their existence. To create a clean and clear pond (like the photo), you have to defeat these crust-causing Anaerobic Bacteria. The Browns of Pirongia did that by introducing counteractive bugs into their pond. SLURRY BUGS are Aerobic Bacteria that need light and oxygen. When introduced to an effluent pond, they eat the crust to allow light and oxygen into their environment. Within weeks, the pond is clear of solids, leaving a liquefied effluent that is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus and is easily pumped. THE COST? About 1/10th the cost of a machine-based system. Sound like bullsh*t? It’s not – it’s just better science in action.

Natural remedies prove popular
Dampening down the dust
Homeopathic Farm Support Ltd began in 1997 in response to repeated requests from farmers for quality homeopathic products and professional information, education and guidelines.
It is a summer problem on the many miles of unsealed Northland roads — dust — which permeates closed windows, flows into water tanks and generally makes life miserable!
Tineke Verkade is now a well recognised business woman in the New Zealand livestock and dairy farming communities. In November 2009, her company, HFS Ltd. won the Organics Aotearoa New Zealand Enterprise Award and was the Supreme Winner of the Enterprising Rural Women Award 2010. Many conventional farmers now use homeopathy for animal health in their farming operation. More than a quarter of Fonterra’s dairy farmers and a significant number of sheep and beef producers use homeopathy exclusively or along with conventional medications, due to the success they have experienced using homeopathy to improve and maintain the health of their animals and productivity. HFS Ltd has a Natural Teat Conditioner (MPI — ACVM registered) that is a complete teat spray to be used after every milking and promotes suppleness with no cracks — described by some users as ‘the best teat spray ever’. Tineke has written a number of books including a Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farming, Homeopathy for
But a tight budget weighs in heavily against miles of Northland gravel roads. Often it’s only a temporary fix which is needed. Only during the summer months or only when the logging trucks are working the area. Current products and solutions to stabilise dust nuisance are often out of financial reach for already hard pressed ratepayers and farmers. Now a solution could be in sight. Whangarei based Corrosion Control NZ Ltd, better known for it’s CorrosionX range, is now also importing ‘Ground Glue’ from the same manufacturer. “Ground Glue is used in four different ways”, Tom Muller of CCNZ explains. ”It can be used as dust suppressant, soil stabiliser for muddy areas, a penetrating concrete sealant, and a stability-booster in fresh concrete. “Spread with a standard water truck or fertiliser sprayer it comes at a very economical price per kilometre of road treated. Together with our clients we need to collect more data and experience in using this product,” Tom says. “We are Northlanders, too, and we would be proud to contribute to a solution of this never ending story. We are providing free test-product to the three Northland councils and we have started trials on ‘Tangowahine Road’. ‘Ground Glue’ can also be used neat as sealant on concrete floors without changing the appearance or making it slippery. And it can graded into muddy places, thus increasing the floor load capacity and helping to compact the soil and stop erosion. “The products are widely used in Texas and Kansas, infamous for their dusty conditions. Australia has given it the thumbs up. With a little co-operation we should be able to make this work for us as well.” For more information contact Tom Muller at the company’s stall at the Northland Field days.

The science of soil Over the centuries, the earth that grows our food has been meticulously studied and written about from many perspectives. Beginning in the 1850s Russian scientists began to classify soils based on their various properties including geological origins. By 1900 American scientists were significantly adding to the knowledge of soil science. From the 1920s–1950s Russian research on soil microbiology was at its pinnacle. Instead of looking at the specific contributions of each of pioneer I want to examine their unified concept of optimum soil. Mineralised soil has a specific outcome — to produce nutrient-dense food and animal feed well-endowed with trace elements. To achieve this requires a properly functioning soil. Soil energy refers to ability to grow a crop and

bring it to maturity. It also takes energy to digest limestone and other rock powders. Soil energy comes from the synchronisation that occurs when various fertilisers come in contact with soil and/ or other fertilisers. Typical products used to create soil energy are calcium nitrate, potassium nitrate, urea, ammonium sulphate, potassium sulphate, MAP, super phosphate, liquid fertilisers, and sea solids. For organics nothing beats high nitrogen fish and Chilean nitrate. Manures and compost will supply some soil energy as well. Foundational minerals refer primarily to adequate available calcium and
phosphorous. Soil well supplied with available phosphorous allows greater uptake of phosphorous into the plant. This results in a greater energy capture via photosynthesis and higher brix readings. In summary foundational minerals build the optimum environment soil biology needs to flourish. Humus and biology refers to the living, breathing aspect of soil. Products used to increase humus in soil include: cover crops, green manures, compost, fresh or aged manures, dry humates and many more. The final addition is a plentiful supply of trace elements such as boron, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc.

In breeding, timing is everything. Identifying when it’s the right time to bring a specific cow into the AI programme can provide a significant advantage, and the use of accurate heat information has been proven to be a vital cue in this process. To that end, well-known herd improvement company LIC have invested in technology at the ground level, purchasing a 75 per cent share in Australian heat detection manufacturers Beacon Heat Detectors. In this case, it’s not a reference of specific temperature — though the use of thermal imaging cameras has been on the rise to detect, even from drones in the air, cattle which are afflicted with illness. This kind of heat detection is all to do with the natural cycle priming a cow for pregnancy and, in the past, it has been a matter of subtle signs, farmer’s know-how and a bit of luck. Now science — with the aid of Beacon — has brought the detection of cows in heat into the 21st century. Adopting a patch and camera system, farmers can be automatically appraised of which cows are in oestrus, ready for artificial insemination. Beacon have a long standing relationship with LIC, having helped develop a heat-sensing camera system for their in-shed automation initiative, ProTrack Vantage. As an add-on, the ProTrack EZ Heat system promises to take the guesswork
out of predicting the precise time to instigate AI, meaning more successful pregnancies, with all that this means for a thriving dairy operation. Early adopters of the technology are full of praise for its ability to accurately predict oestrus — and thus boost the bottom line. I’ve had the camera for two mating seasons and it’s doing everything I thought it would,” says Joe Wyborn of Geraldine. “The investment in EZ Heat and heat patches has paid for itself within a year from the savings in bulls (we used to carry 28, now it’s only 12) and savings in labour.” LIC Chief Executive Wayne McNee is also enthusiastic about this strategic partnership, noting that his company’s leadership in genetic science is now matched by this advance in breeding support technology. Of course, there are wider markets beyond Australia and New Zealand in which tech like the ProTrack system will prove extremely valuable. “There is farmer demand worldwide for these high-quality, custom-made products which can drive gains in productivity and profitability on-farm.

We will be looking at where we can market these products in international markets to deliver a good return for our shareholders.” For now, the aim is to roll out Beacon’s tech to as many Kiwi and Aussie farms as possible, making the precise science of genetic improvement that little bit sharper. In economic conditions, such as those faced by the modern dairy industry, the possibility of reliable 12 monthly calving cycles must seem a godsend — but in fact, it’s just solid ingenuity!

impressive piece of kit’ and Robina Satchel, a Tutira dry stock farmer said her husband Guy was very happy and that e3 is doing everything he wanted it to do. The e3 is a Switch EV Global development. The company is based in Warkworth and specialises in electric propulsion systems using the latest lithium polymer cells which it imports to produce its e3 ATV batteries. The e3 has been developed “because we believe the current offerings for small utility vehicles in farming environments are not where they need to be for a number of reasons”, says managing director Gerrard Merrick. “The e3 is a totally unique vehicle and there is nothing else like it in the market. “It is considerably safer than current offerings and it has proven itself to be a far more capable vehicle in a range of challenging on-farm conditions negotiating mud and steep terrain.“ The vehicle seats
two people side by side and has a greater load carrying capacity than quad bikes and is supplied with a large tip tray on the back. With two adults aboard it weighs around 400kg and has a combined tray load and towing capacity of 600kg. Malcolm Clark ordered his e3 with a custom tip tray that included a hinged tailgate and 20% extra space for olive bins. “I’m finding the tray really useful as I can fill and tip a full load quite easily” says Malcolm. The e3 has a range of 20 — 40 kilometres between charges on farm terrain and because the e3 is 100 percent electric it has fewer moving parts than combustion engines so it is inherently more reliable with significantly lower running costs. With zero emissions and quiet operational noise levels the manufacturers say the machine will have useful applications in conservation areas, in vineyards or indoors where growers want to avoid carbon monoxide emissions.

To rust or not to rust? Even almighty Fonterra struggles to control the world’s milk prices. None of us will ever control the weather. But now we can control rust! The world spends as much on corrosion as on the military budget and that’s about about three percent of most GDP’s. And could it not be used so much better on the farm? Imagine to ‘hold’ that milking shed another five years, put off the rewiring project for a few more seasons, keep the bridge safe for longer and make the farm vehicles last more summers! That is pure income for your farm! And more reliable gear, waterproof electrical installations and well behaved farm bikes are so much more fun to work with. No house, no farm, or workshop in subtropical Northland is further away from the salty sea than 40 km. Salt, heat, sulphur, fertiliser and rain work perfectly together when they attack farm gear. Traditionally offered products will produce the traditional results. A smarter way to battle corrosion is to look at how the Navy, Airbus,
The RAAF, Northpower, the Rotorua Wastewater works and NIWA Bream Bay face extreme corrosion problems. They all suffer dreadful losses and face tons of consequential cost when their gear fails. As a result, they simply use the best corrosion preventing compounds available — they all use CorrosionX ! The fact that MPI approved CorrosionX waterproofs electronics, is applicable over wet or rusty surfaces is known to many. But few people know that it is actually cheaper too. Seriously! It is cheaper to buy CorrosionX. Not only better, not only more environmentally friendly — it is the most cost efficient solution to your corrosion problem any way you spin it! Baling all rolled up With decades of productive growing seasons behind them, New Holland are looking to the future, developing a new range of balers to maximise efficiency at harvest time. Their 2016 lineup of three new roll balers is set to redefine what can be achieved with a fixed chamber round baler in the field. New Holland knows that during tight baling windows, every second spent in the yard is a second lost in the field. That is why their new range of roll balers have been designed to offer the ultimate in easy servicing. The single piece, lightweight front shield provides easy access to all servicing and lubrication points. The centralised automatic greasing system assures long life as does the automatic oiling system which continuously oils all chains. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new advancements in baling technology incorporated in New Holland’s 2016 offering. Efficiency is key to the performance of the three machines in the roll baler range, which
spans the 125, the 125 combi and the 135 ultra. Precision engineering makes for even, reliable bale sizing, even across vast swathes of pasture. “The heavy duty Roll Baler has been engineered by design to offer outstanding in-field performance, uniformly dense bales, efficient road transport and bulletproof reliability. Everything professional contractors and large scale dairy farmers are looking for to boost their productivity,” says Greg Moore, New Holland’s Product Specialist. “Furthermore, the flagship Roll Baler completes New Holland’s round baler line up, alongside the Roll-Belt series, and variable chamber models.” The 2.1m pick-up working width for

both Roll Baler 125 models and the 2.2m pick-up working width for the Roll Baler 135 model ensure that every last piece of valuable crop is efficiently transferred into the chamber, even when working in heavy first cut silage or dense straw swathes produced by today’s high
capacity combines. The five tine bars maintain positive contact with the crop and provide an even flow to prevent clogging. The 470mm diameter rotor features 10mm thick tines for exceptional reliability and durability to further extend machine life.

Boxing clever in a whole new class
Kubota’s range of small tractors have proven a versatile and popular choice for Kiwi farmers, tackling chores across a range of farming disciplines. Now the innovative manufacturer with the distinctive orange livery is branching out, releasing a brand new range of tractors in the competitive 130–170 horsepower sector of the market. The new M7-1 Series is the largest horsepower offering from Kubota to date, and includes three new mid-range tractor models. With ground-breaking engine technology under the hood and a boasted best-in-class base weight, Kubota intend the M7–1 to be a real all rounder, taking up the workload for livestock farmers as well as row cropping operations. With the addition of an optional front-end loader, this new orange workhorse can really multi-task, making it a perfect ‘all positions’ player on the farm. “Kubota is always looking forward, increasing our competitive know-how, and expanding our product offerings to meet the demands of our current and prospective customer base,” said Ian Massicks, New Zealand Kubota Manager. “With the M7–1 Series, we are bringing more than 40 years of engineering prowess to the field with a built from the ground up machine, designed with intuitive technology that makes precision farming possible for Kubota customers.” Part of that tech boost is the new V6108 turbo diesel
engine, a mill which balances the modern need for controlled emissions with ample torque and power. The Common Rail System on the M7–1 Series electronically controls the timing and amount of high-pressure injected fuel in stages for optimal combustion, which results in greater efficiency, better fuel economy and less engine noise. A selective catalytic system takes care of any nasties in the exhaust gases, transforming them to water vapour and nitrogen. The line will feature a 24x24 speed semi-powershift transmission or the Kubota Variable Transmission that virtually provides an infinite number of forward and reverse speeds, allowing operators to work at the optimal speed for a wide variety of jobs. It’s a clear indication of things to come from Kubota, who are unashamedly muscling in on territory once thought the preserve of big Euro and American tractors. Like the Japanese auto takeover of the 1980s and 90s, this power shift is definitely not one to take lightly — the M7–1 has the build quality, utility and smarts to duke it out with the big boys.

True sporting pedigree Yamaha are no strangers to the winner’s podium — across a variety of racing disciplines, the Japanese manufacturers have proven time and again that cutting-edge innovation leads to dominance on the track and on the trail. Peppy side-by-side off roaders have evolved into snarling monsters in the past few years, with their displacement creeping up and turbos sprouting under hoods. So — does the Yamaha YXZ1000R have what it takes to show the best of North America how it’s done? The Yamaha engineers began with power — crafting a twelve valve, three cylinder 998cc engine which is clearly inspired by their racing bikes. The clues — three hungry throttle bodies, three coil packs, and a whopping 11.3 to 1 compression ratio. Like many bikes, it’s a dry sump setup — which means that even the factory figure of 112hp could conceivably be added to by enthusiastic after-market speedsters. Noteworthy, too, is that the dry sump option loses the cumbersome oil pan, letting the engine sit low in the frame for stability. Which brings us to how that power gets to the ground — through a manual five speed box. Here we have a distinct departure from the predominance of CVT in side-by-sides, and once again here, Yamaha show their dirt-bike heritage. The five-speed box is tightly geared, accelerative, and allows the YXZ1000R to really pull in the 6-7k rev zone. Even the clutch system is similar to that of a dirt bike, just bigger and
tougher. There’s even a shift light which informs drivers of the right time to snap back on the sequential stick. In the final analysis, what Yamaha have done with the YXZ1000R is
to produce a sporting UTV which approaches recreational off-roading for a different direction. Rather than begin with a solid base of hunting and working off roaders
and give one the hot-rod overhaul, the boys in blue and white have asked the question — what if one of our craziest dirt bikes just happened to have four wheels and two seats?

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
Market-linked price for organic milk
The success of Fonterra’s organic business has prompted the cooperative to introduce an independent organic milk price linked to market returns for organic products. From June 2016, organic milk payments will reflect the performance of the organics business. Organic farmers currently receive a fixed premium together with the conventional Farmgate Milk Price for their organic milk supply. Organic farmers can choose to move to the new payment approach or stay under the existing payment system. At a meeting with organic farmers this week, Fonterra’s global business manager — organics Craig Deadman,
told farmers that paying market-linked prices for organic milk recognises the improved performance of the organic business, which reflects greater demand and stable prices for global organic milk products. “Organic milk products provide highvalue returns for the Co-operative. We want to grow our organics business over the long term. Linking the organic milk price to organic market returns will help us to increase the number of
organic farmers.” Mr Deadman said that historically market prices for organic milk products have been less volatile than conventional milk price products and the organic milk price has the potential to provide farmers more certainty in operating their organics businesses. He said the move also recognises the effort and commitment of Fonterra organic farmers to producing premium organic milk. Mr Deadman said Fonterra has undertaken a series of measures recently to enhance the attractiveness of organic farming for current and prospective organic farmers. “A recent initiative is the establishment of the Organic Farmers Advisory Group, a representative group of organic farmers who provide an additional feedback channel between organic farmers and Fonterra. They also had provided feedback on the new organic pricing system,” said Mr Deadman.
