“It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 34th Northland Field Days. Our dedicated bands of voluntary organisers, associate and community helpers, along with our sole part-time employee, have worked hard over the last 12 months to bring another quality event for you all to enjoy at New Zealand’s friendliest field days,” says president of Northland Field Days, Lew Duggan. “Despite a difficult year we have maintained, in line with our charitable trust status, the commitment to invest in Northland’s agricultural future. We were pleased to again give financial support to Northland students with their tertiary education in 2017, as well as numerous other Northland organisations and clubs. “We see this event as the perfect opportunity for town and country to unite, share and promote the wonderful lifestyle sectors New Zealand offers, and to ensure solid foundation support for our primary industry by partnering with exhibitors offering technological supremacy, expertise and the best deals to be had. It is showtime in Kaipara

The field days has grown to become a major fixture on the national farming calendar since it first began as a simple agricultural expo and the Northland Field Days Committee is set to have a place to call home, as the final touches are put on a new office building at Awakino Point. Held in Dargaville and now recognised as Northland’s largest annual agricultural event, the gates are open to the 34th annual show between March 1 and 3. “I think it will be really good for the team to have somewhere to base ourselves. It’s good to be on location, so when you’re talking about things you actually can go and look at the site,” says vice president Rachael de Vries. The committee has been working out of small portable buildings since the field days have been held at the current site. “We have been talking about having a building where we can meet with sponsors and exhibitors for many years, so it’s rather exciting seeing it coming to fruition.” The committee is now waiting for the progress inspection and if all goes to plan, the building will be up and running for the upcoming field days. “It’s somewhere where people can come and see our administration staff member. We can also have past presidents’ pictures on the wall and really know our history.” “The field days is a local event the whole family can enjoy — and one that won’t break the bank,”she says. “We continue to champion all things farming and agricultural — from the latest innovations in fencing and agriculture, sawmill demonstrations through to lifestyle and market exhibitors under

the Lifestyle Pavilion marquees, and a specific area for market-type products.” Top of the list for farmers will be the comprehensive trade exhibits, with the latest and greatest in implements, machinery and innovations to enhance their business, while they and their families can enjoy a wide range of entertainment. “A major attraction again this year will be chaps, spurs and cowboy hats, with cutting horse displays and the cowboy challenge, which is a new event. This is all things cowboy and certainly interesting. “There is the Young Farmer cattle judging and the quad skills competition, face painting for children and the tractor pull challenge.” Other show attractions include the Clydesdales, musicians, NEST rescue helicopter, Caro’s Crazy Critters mobile farm, Kidzone, Sheep ‘n Show, Logger

Sports, sheep dog trials, and lawn mower races. “There will be numerous delicious food and drink options on site for sale. Northland Field Days is not only organised, managed and staffed by volunteers, but we have kept the costs realistic to encourage more families to attend.” The ticket prices are the same as last year with adult day pass tickets priced at $12, and children are at $5 each, while $30 will admit a family of two adults and three children.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

All that’s country by Ann Morgan Shirley May of Pakaraka is well known throughout the Northland and Country music communities for her passion for helping others and her love of music. Shirley was born in Kawakawa, has never moved away from the district.

“M

y dad was a truck driver for Bay Transport and we lived at Waimate North, Oromahoe and Morewa,” says Shirley. “My first job was at 15 years old at the IGA in Morewa and then I went to Auckland for two years and hated it. I came home for my holidays one day and the farmer up the road needed help to dock the lambs, so my mum sent me and that is when I met my husband Peter — it was his family farm.” Shirley kept working in Auckland and they got married when she was 20 years old. “I became an instant farmer’s wife and helped Peter with whatever

needed doing including the milking. We had 1,200 ewes and I would help the shearers and then come home and cook their meals. “Farming is fun — you had to be organised when the children came along and we would have them in the pram on the farm. We had a lot of experiences with our eldest daughter, we found her drinking from the cow’s teats in the shed and one day she went walkabout and the helicopter pilot was spraying and he came and hovered over her head so I could see her, after that she was put in a ‘cream can’ so we always knew where she was. “Eventually our family grew to

three children and we put a share milker on as Peter was doing bulldozer work off-farm. We then moved into drystock and now run 500 Friesian bulls. “My parents’ families were very musical and I taught myself the guitar by sitting in the corner watching others play. It was always country music, Shirley Thoms and the like — the old western stuff.” Shirley contracted rheumatic fever twice, once when she was 17 years old and again not long after she was married. “I was in hospital with Kay Murray in the bed next to me. She had started the country music club in Okaihau and suggested I join and I did, some 38 years ago, and I now run the club,” says Shirley. “It was a strong club but eventually, because people were leaving the area, there were only a few people left so we moved to Kawakawa and now we have some 60 members. Thirty odd years ago Mike Nettmann from Kerikeri phoned me for a couple of band suggestions to

play at a jazz festival he wanted to hold and I ended up helping him. We have the Country Rock festival in May and the Jazz and Blues in August. Although he retired we are still going and people come from around the world — to be honest I never thought the country music one would have lasted ten years. “We have clubs all over new Zealand and a lot of farmers come along, or their children do — it is a good break off-farm. “Our Little Tennessee Country Music Club supports everyone who comes to sing. If you are brave enough to get up, who cares if you can’t quite sing in tune — it is good to have a go.” Shirley also organises the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway fundraising concerts. “I believe it is important for couples to have their own interests, and to support each other. If you have support you are home and hosed no matter what else is going on. “As farmers it is healthy to get involved in local groups and socialise

You get to see into other lives, and suddenly your life isn’t so bad after all.” One of her accomplishments was receiving the Queen’s Service Medal for services to the community over the years. “I was chuffed to receive the Queen’s Service Medal, it is a huge honour. My family are pleased that all the work I

have done over the years for the rural community has been noticed and they were thrilled others did something to recognise it. “I believe in helping others — if someone needs to go to hospital I will take them, if they need baking, I will bake. “Life is about helping where you can and getting out there and giving of your time — without wanting to be paid. It does come back to you.”

Health from the

ocean by Ann Morgan

Whilst visiting organic farms around New Zealand some years ago, Jill Bradley and Keith Atwood discovered the importance of organically grown fruit and veges and started their family business AgriSea, producing seaweed products for the home gardener.

O

ver time a range of skincare products was created under the business Ocean Organics in 1996 as a way for Jill to have a natural hand cream made from a wide variety of New Zealand herbs. Other products have also been made available to help with skin. “Our skincare products are created from an array of high quality hand picked and hand pressed New Zealand native wild herbs, and the results are incredible,” says Jill. “They are produced in small batches and are made totally by hand — from the picking to the mixing and packaging. “I often gardened without gloves and my hands had little infections from rose

thorns and things so I needed a cream that was moisturising and healing. We set about visiting many medical herbalists to find someone we could work with on our project.” It took well over a year to find someone the couple would work with. Jill and Keith had two questions for each person they met with. How long have you been a medical herbalist and would you be prepared to sit with Maori experts to work with herbs of our own country? “We all hear about Chinese herbs and the European knowledge of herbs but it was the knowledge of New Zealand medicinal herbs that we wanted to integrate. Our herbs come from a perfect bush environment — grown in beautiful

quality soil. We found a lady that has worked with herbs all her life and she said she would be honoured to sit with Maori herbal experts to learn from.” Jill and Keith then decided their Agrisea gardeners might appreciate the hand cream as it is not filled with chemicals and is moisturising and healing. The family then created a healing salve that has also become very popular. “It is really outstanding and a lot of people with eczema use it — it was like

magic. In the early days I cleared a big bank of cleavers, and my forearms were absolutely on fire when I came in. I said to Keith I made a mistake and should have worn sleeves and gloves, so I used the salve on one arm as a test and it was an instant relief. “It has a mixture of herbs such as manuka, flax root, seaweed, rescue remedy and lavender. It is one of those balms that is good for anything and clients have said it is magic for hemorrhoids as well. A friend who had

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES  February 2018

bowel cancer used it out of desperation after chemotherapy and said it was like magic and helped her get relief where nothing else had worked.” Five years later Jill’s daughter asked her to create a face cream. “The rose and almond face cream was the very last product we made and is for our gardeners and Agrisea farmers’ wives — the men use it too. It is a truly nourishing face cream and is great if you are out in the elements. It has no chemicals in it, just herbs. “Agrisea is the family’s main business and Ocean Organics is the sideline company that is just as important, and we plan it to always be here for our customers. “We refuse to have the products mass produced — I think you would lose something. Keeping it made in small batches regularly is the best thing. Even the base cream took us ages to find as it needed to be special. We found a Chinese chemist and medical herbalist and he makes it especially for us. “Having created these products is amazing, there are little stories all the time. Our grandchild uses it for eczema — a man came because the salve is the only thing that helps his skin condition that he has had for many years. Someone’s horse had an ulcer and the salve healed it. “It sounds like a miracle but it really is that we have a phenomenal array of truly healing herbs, put together by a woman who knows her stuff. There is always three per cent in the world things don’t work for but for the

Seaweed and native herbs are held in high esteem by the family and are the main ingredients for the products the company creates

majority it helps. It is our go to balm. “Even our Agri Sea products are handmade with wooden paddles by people — not machines. We believe if you are going to sell something to people it is very important to sell something of high value.”

Miko Hayashi and Stacia Jensen believe in a clean and green environment and taking care of our farms and rural properties. Utilising the wax from honey bee hives to create wax wraps is one way they are helping the environment.

S

tacia originates from the United States and has lived in New Zealand for 10 years and Miko was born in India and raised in Australia. The couple met at a yoga retreat in Coromandel and they now call New Zealand home with baby Kio. “We were travelling around New Zealand and felt inspired by the beauty and were determined to reduce our plastic use and impact on the environment and the idea flourished,” says Stacia. “At the time I was teaching yoga, and the idea to create something natural really appealed to us. We already recycle

and reduce our caustic use as much as possible and we decided to pursue the wrap idea and it became serious. “Bees are incredible, and they lend some of their magical property to the wax which helps us. They are awesome creatures — they pollinate our plants and pastures which helps create the oxygen we breathe. We use local wax as much as possible and when a bee flies by we often wonder if that bee has made the wax we use.” The couple found the wax they originally used didn’t work well and there was a lot of frustration with the original recipe.

Miko Hayashi and Stacia Jensen believe leaving the environment healthy for baby Kio and future generations is important

is welcomed by those who use them. The wraps help cheese stay fresh for longer and it helps hold extra large sandwiches together. One couple wasn’t sure how it would work for them until they wrapped half an onion and forgot it was in the fridge for a few weeks. It came out totally fine and now they have a set each.” All products are hand made — from mixing the ingredients — to melting it down and creating the recipe — the mixture is also applied to the cotton by hand. “You need to be careful with the process as wax won’t come off if you get it on things like your clothes. Each wrap should last at least a year with proper care. After use give it a wash with

cool water and eco friendly detergent and keep it out of direct sunlight for quality control. You can easily make reusable bags for storing your snacks, herbs or salad leaves in the fridge. One of my favourite uses is making a bag to place fresh flowers in as a gift. Add a little bit of water and paper and it won’t seep through the wax. “We sell online at our Lilybee store and enjoy connecting with customers and providing a quality natural product. “We appreciate the opportunity to work alongside the rural community and nature. “It is great to see New Zealand becoming more clean and green, and being able to use the wax from beehives adds to that.”

“Miko found a great recipe and we changed the wax we used,” says Stacia. “We source as much wax as possible locally and started selling our Lilybee wraps at a farmers’ market. Farmers are enjoying having our wrap for their food whilst out working, and being in touch with nature and the environment they appreciate having an alternative to plastic.” The wraps are reusable and Miko says that element appeals to country folk. “It is hard to do anything without plastic being involved. Just look at the shelves in your local supermarket — everything is covered in plastic, even fruits and vegetables are shrink-wrap packaged and bagged,” he says. “Farmers appreciate having a natural product and it is a way to connect with bees. There are lots of types of wax just as there is many types of honey.” Stacia says people trying to make wraps at home can be disappointed by the results because different waxes have different properties but they are all antiseptic and antibacterial. “Airtight seals can be created around containers with wax wraps, and they are great for workers making hay or silage or bringing in stock. “Put in a chilly bin and you are good to go for the day. Stopping the stink bug

The Ministry for Primary Industries has introduced new treatment requirements to stop brown marmorated stink bugs arriving into New Zealand in sea containers from Italy.

Brown marmorated stink bugs thrive in cool climates, making them a threat up and down the country, and all sea containers from Italy now require treatment for the invasive pest before arriving in New Zealand. Travellers are reminded to check their luggage on return to New Zealand to make sure they haven’t brought the bug with them, and people importing goods from overseas — including internet shoppers — are also encouraged to check their packages. “The new measure is a response to the increasing number of stink bug detections MPI officers are making at the border in cargo from Italy,” says Paul Hallett, MPI’s biosecurity and environment manager. “We want to reduce the chance of this nasty bug getting into New Zealand. The brown marmorated stink bug has spread to the United States and Europe from Asia. It’s a sneaky pest that we have caught at the border many times, hitchhiking on passengers and in imported goods. “So far we’ve managed to stop it settling here, but we need help. They’re hard to see, hard to kill, travel far and breed fast.” These bugs could be a damaging economic pest and a significant household nuisance, and crops

and gardens could be devastated. Known to feed heavily on a wide variety of plant species, stink bugs would attack grapes, kiwifruit, apples, citrus and stone fruit, corn and many other valuable crops. “Bugs gather in large numbers over winter in home, where they are an unsightly and smelly nuisance. They can’t be easily treated with insecticides and emit a pungent odour when squashed.” Imported containers from Italy had previously been subject to auditing and inspection by biosecurity officers but did not require treatment unless they carried vehicles or machinery, or there was evidence of contamination. “Extending the treatment requirement to all shipping containers from Italy will add another layer of biosecurity protection,” says Mr Hallett. So far this season, MPI officers have intercepted more stink bugs from Italy than any other country (39 out of 80 interceptions). The largest single find involved 118 dead bugs in a container of machinery and parts. The treatment requirements will last until the end February and will

be reviewed prior to the start of next season in September. People are urged to call the pest-anddiseases hotline on 0800 80 99 66 if they believe they have found a brown marmorated stink bug.

ROAD SAFETY

“When using these vehicles daily on our land and farms, it is important to remember to take steps to keep them maintained. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure they are in good working order for both our safety and longevity of the equipment,” says Shayn Rouse, managing director of Rouse Motorcycles in Hikurangi. “With farm bikes it is easy to forget to complete important safety checks because they don’t require a warrant of fitness. People tend to not service their vehicles as a cost saving factor but it is one of the most important things for rider safety as so much can go wrong quickly. “Many farm bikes head and tail lights don’t work but riders don’t realise that when they are travelling on metal roads and come around a corner, the light is what people see, and if there is no light you could be hit by oncoming vehicles.” Shayn says it is important not to let the tyres run down over summer and change them in winter because tyres keep the vehicle safe and stable. “If you suddenly have rain after a long dry

Keep your vehicle maintained and always wear helmets when riding bikes

spell it makes everything slippery and if you need to stop in a hurry bald tyres are dangerous. Checking tyre pressure regularly is also important. “When servicing your bike we ensure the brakes and tyres are fully functional. We know it comes to dollars and cents but it is about the safety of the rider. Checking the oil daily and keeping bikes washed regularly is a major cost-saving factor. Mud destroys bikes — it turns into something like a grinding paste and works its way into places it shouldn’t. When you clean your vehicle visually look over it and see if there is anything damaged or broken. Not washing your bike makes me money.

“If you carry a passenger on a quad bike there is a lot more weight involved when going up hills. Use common sense and ask the passenger to get off and walk as this is the safest thing to do. “Think carefully before you act — no one gets on their bike in the morning to go out and hurt themselves or others, thats a fact. “You don’t expect to injure yourself but it is easy to do so, even going as slow as five kilometres per hour. Always remember to wear a helmet and that safety comes first. “Servicing your bike is like getting a warrant of fitness, so keep it serviced for everyone’s safety.”

STAY AFLOAT

Keep your MP informed by Ann Morgan

Northland MP Matt King will be attending the Northland Field Days and is interested in hearing the views, concerns and stories of those attending the event. “I really enjoy the field days — there is a good mix of people. I am going to be there on Thursday and Friday,” says Mr King. “Every day is a working day for farmers and currently things are going ok for them — including the payouts for dairy, beef and lamb, and long may it continue. “Northland is doing well and it is positive. I believe there is a myth about Northland and we are portrayed as the poor cousins, yet I am being contacted from people all over Northland looking for workers.” This includes farmers, contractors, those in hospitality and forestry. “The main thing for Northland is employment and we have got it. It is important that we know where we are headed and to get people out of unemployment. Having youth employed instead of going on a benefit is a positive step for our region. “Whenever you get growth it triggers a lot of building and every tradie I know is building houses. Mangawhai had 400 new homes built and this will ultimately help financially from Wellsford to Kaitaia. “Three of the bridges are underway, but we are concerned about roading and the Northland Economic Action plan. We identified that the motorway was the biggest single driver for growth. It is important that we get this growth and we

will find out from the upcoming census how much Northland has grown. “Some farmers are stuck on the land seven days a week and having a day or two away at the field days is a good opportunity to talk to other farmers, see the new products, ideas and innovation that is available. It is mentally and emotionally healthy and it is important to build networks that you can call on when necessary. “Come and talk to me and let me know your story or concerns — whether it be positive or negative, I would like

to hear your view. I am very receptive to have people keep me up to date and informed to what is going on in my patch.”

To cuke or not to cuke

Focus on the future

by Erica Faber, orchard productivity manager, Just Avocados

2018 is set to be another successful year at King’s College.

As avocado fruitlets start sizing you may have noticed some of the fruit develop into seedless avocados aka cukes!

Te Putake Lodge, our special Year 9 boys’ boarding venue, ensures new students to King’s get the very best start at this important stage of their education journey. The lodge has received an overwhelmingly positive response from parents across New Zealand since its launch at the start of 2016, and the college can boast an impressive waiting list for entry into this initiative. “This programme acknowledges that Year 9 2018 new student Elliot Gordon (Year 9, Greenbank House), boarders are different to and 2017 deputy head prefect, Jonathan Ta (Peart older boarding students,” explains headmaster Simon Lamb. “It is school systems and does much to evidence that King’s College is a school, showcase the benefits of co-education.” which responds to a worldwide need The college is also proud of the to provide a different model of pastoral continued achievements of its students care for our younger students.” across the academic, sporting, and The introduction of Year 11 girls, cultural spheres. also in 2016, as both day students “We are about providing our students and boarders continues to be met with with access to the best all round strong demand. education,” says Mr Lamb. “This move allows girls to appreciate “It is this all-roundedness that will a full senior learning programme at the college; and it means they can partake in enable real success after they leave the full three years of NCEA or Cambridge our college.” Visit the King’s website for more International Examinations study. “It is also a response to the globally information on everything the College evolving nature of traditional boarding has to offer: kingscollege.school.nz

Botanically, there are two main reasons for the formation of seedless fruit: 1. Parthenocarpy, where fruit develops without fertilisation e.g. bananas; and 2. Stenospermocarpy, where pollination and fertilisation have occurred, but the embryo either does not form or aborts before the completion of seed formation as in avocado cukes. In both cases the tree must be able to continue to sustain the development of the fruit in the absence of the seed. Fruit development is normally controlled by carbohydrates, sugars and phytohormones supplied by the developing seed. So how does the cuke or seedless avocado develop without the seed and why does this occur? It is all a bit ambiguous and surprisingly there is little research into the phenomenon of the seedless avocado. With fluctuating periods of minimum temperatures during the long flowering period, we get waves of fruit set resulting in a range of avocado fruitlet sizes. The more erratic the temperature, the more inconsistent the fruit sizing.

Whether a fruit aborts or matures, depends on its ability to chemically inhibit neighbouring fruit or on its sink strength for resources. Starch reserves in the ovary, also play a significant role in the reproductive process in avocados. Different levels of carbohydrate reserves in different flowers are related to the success or failure of subsequent fruitlet development. When the endosperm is starved of resources due to either the sink strength of the first wave of fruit set or the low carbohydrate reserves of the ovary; the formation of the endosperm tissue is affected at an early stage, and embryo development ceases. These fruitlets with abortive seeds are now no longer nourished by the seed, but by small amounts of phytohormones and resources found in the mesocarp enabling the fruitlet to ‘hold on’ and continue to develop into seedless avocados or what we call cukes. Don’t be quick to dismiss or discard these cukes however, as they are now making headlines and can be found in high-end supermarkets and fancy restaurants.

HUNTING, FISHING & OUTDOORS Duck-hunting season looms by Ann Morgan

100

With May and the duck hunting season fast approaching, now is the time for seasoned duck shooters to start checking their gear, while for others, it may be a first-time chance at putting wild fowl on the table and all firearms users need to ensure they know the rules of using guns.

There are seven firearms rules for all New Zealand hunters in the Firearms Safety Code: 1. Treat every firearm as loaded. 2. Always point firearms in a safe direction. 3. Load a firearm only when ready to fire. 4. Identify your target beyond all doubt. 5. Check your firing zone. 6. Store firearms and ammunition safely. 7. Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms. It is important that gun owners and users not only treat every firearm as

loaded, but also know how to store the gun and ammunition. Fish and Game NZ says that with our increasingly urbanised society, more and more would-be hunters don’t have the family or contacts to learn the skills or find the areas to be successful hunters. As a result, the organisation has tapped into a hunter training program run by the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association (NZDA). The hunter national training scheme — known as Hunts — introduces new hunters to the skills and knowledge to be safe and successful in our New Zealand outdoor environment, and has an approved syllabus delivered throughout New Zealand by qualified and warranted instructors. Increasingly Fish and Game has contributed to the courses with game bird hunting content on equipment, technique and places to hunt. It reinforces NZDA’s emphasis on ethical and lawful hunting with an introduction to Fish and Game’s Hunting Guidelines and Game Bird Regulations.

The course covers legal, ethical and environmental responsibilities, hunting equipment and food, bushcraft and navigation and firearm safety, selection and marksmanship, among other relevant subjects. There are six species of waterfowl targeted. They are mallard, paradise, grey and shoveler duck, black swan and greater Canada goose. In New Zealand it is compulsory to use non-toxic shot when hunting waterfowl with any gun using a 10 or 12 gauge cartridge for all areas, including private land, within 200m of a water body and wetlands. You are required by law to have a safe and secure place to store your firearms at your home. All firearms and ammunition should be stored separately, out of the reach of children, out of view and in a secure room, rack or cabinet approved by your Arms Officer. “Included in Agriline range of machinery are the Vigolo mulchers. Vigolo has been manufacturing farm machinery in Italy for more than 60 years and are now the fastest growing brand of mulchers in New Zealand,” says salesman Gerry Hamlin Agriline managing director Mike Hamlin has more than 20 years’ experience with mulchers and has used his extensive knowledge of the industry to assist in the design of the current Vigolo mulchers, to ensure they are ideal for Northland conditions. The latest addition to the range is the Vigolo TDF series mulchers, they are the most heavy duty flail mulcher available on the market. “One of the main features of the new TDF range is the high horsepower rating. The single drive model is rated for up to 180HP and double drive model is rated up to a massive 300HP.” Both machines have more belts driving than any other mulcher in the industry greatly reducing the chance of slipping belts. The TDF has a large 273mm rotor giving it excellent strength. “This also gives much better momentum which helps you get through the tough spots without stalling your tractor,” says Gerry. “The wide, shaped skids allow for better flotation and will tend to ride over loose material rather than bunching it up in front, and a large 273mm roller comes standard on the mulchers above 2.5m wide and is an option available on the ones 2.5m and below.”

FORESTRY Log prices bode well

There is good news on the forestry front with log exports peaking — A-grade export log prices lifted to $131 a tonne in January. The average export price for pruned logs jumped to $176 a tonne from $170 a tonne according to AgriHQ. In volume terms, log exports to China and Japan are up, with volumes to India down. The Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association (WMPA) still continues to lobby the government for a more favourable trading environment

as wood exporting countries such as Canada and Russia support their local industries, while Chinese wood manufacturers benefit from subsidies. This is creating an uneven playing field for New Zealand processors, according to the WPMA, which would like to see the government take a complaint to the World Trade Organisation. Figures for the year to January show sales of logs, wood and wood articles rose $546 million to $4.7 billion, a 12 per cent lift. New Zealand export log prices advanced to a new record, driven by continued strong demand from China, lower shipping rates and a favourable currency. The price for A-grade export logs lifted to $131 a tonne from $129 a tonne last month, marking the highest level since AgriHQ began collecting the data in 2008, according to the agricultural market specialist’s monthly survey of exporters, forest owners and saw millers. The average export price for pruned logs jumped to $176 a tonne from $170 a tonne last month and marking the highest

level since July 2016, AgriHQ said. New Zealand is experiencing strong demand for logs from China, which has clamped down on the harvesting of its own forests and reduced tariffs on imported logs to meet demand in its local market. AgriHQ said Chinese demand for logs remains high, with a record total of 2,903,943 tonnes imported in November, up 20 per cent on October levels and 10 per cent above the same period a year earlier.

“Strong demand has had China continue to import significant quantities of logs,” AgriHQ analyst Reece Brick said in his report. “China continues to be New Zealand’s major destination for log exports, making up 83 per cent of New Zealand’s total log exports in November.” Brick noted exports to China in the year to November 2017 were up 16 per cent compared with the entire 2016 calendar year.

Planting a billion trees in ten years is a huge challenge. The government’s aim is long term – for employment and climate change targets decades into the future.

Today’s children will get the rewards when they are grown up. The new trees could add 500,000 hectares to New Zealand’s established 1.7 million hectares of plantation forests. That land is our contribution already. We’ll produce 32 million cubic metres of logs for timber this year and we replant the land after we harvest. We look forward to sharing; with government, iwi and farmers, all of the great future which comes with growing trees. Let’s plant.

New measure for Kauri The Kauri Dieback Governance Group have three measures planned to strengthen efforts to save kauri trees from dieback disease. It was agreed to put in place a Controlled Area Notice (CAN) for kauri dieback, a National Pest Management Plan, and a Strategic Science Advisory Group. “These new measures will give greater protection to kauri. They are targeted at getting people to do the right thing and will strengthen efforts to manage the spread of kauri dieback,” said governance group chair, MPI’s chief operations officer, Roger Smith. The first measure is to put in place a Controlled Area Notice (CAN) for kauri dieback under the Biosecurity Act 1993. “The CAN cannot ban people from going into a particular area, but it would put a legal requirement on them to follow the right hygiene standards when entering or leaving areas that have kauri. We aim to make these safeguards as easy as possible to follow,” says Mr Smith. Rolled out in stages, the aim is to have the CAN in place over the coming months. Work on preparing the CAN is under way and programme partners are deciding the details of how it will be implemented. This will include deciding the first location where the CAN will initially apply. “A staged approach will enable us to

target higher priority areas first and not reach beyond our capacity to deliver the work effectively. It also provides opportunities to learn and refine the controls as they are rolled-out to other places.” The second measure is that the CAN should ultimately be replaced by a National Pest Management Plan (NPMP) for kauri dieback. “A national plan is used for tackling major biosecurity threats and is the strongest form of regulation we can put in place. It will provide consistent regulations for dealing with kauri dieback that apply nationally, more robust programme governance and better access to funding. The national plan would be a longer-term measure for managing kauri dieback and extensive consultation will be required to develop it.” The third measure is to set up a Strategic Science Advisory Group to ensure the fight against kauri dieback is supported by the necessary science and research. “This group will ensure the programme has ongoing access to some of the best

minds and knowledge relating to kauri,” says Mr Smith. “Kauri dieback is a destructive disease and we take our responsibilities towards managing it very seriously. It remains vital for anyone visiting forests with kauri to take personal responsibility and follow good biosecurity hygiene practices, stay on official tracks that are open and keep well clear of kauri roots. If possible, people should make use of forests and parks where kauri are not present. “I would like to acknowledge the work partner agencies and community groups are doing to upgrade tracks, install cleaning stations and put up signage to help protect kauri.

AG CONTRACTORS ADVERTORIAL

Start with an accurate farm map Not having a farm map will be costing you money; because a current and precise map is the foundation for your entire operation. It impacts a range of decisions made in the field everyday, from applying a new crop variety to maintaining it effectively. GPS-it has been providing high-quality mapping solutions to customers since 2001. As pioneers and experts of the New Zealand GPS mapping industry, we’ve integrated the latest advancements in drone (UAV) and aerial technology to ensure that your data is captured and provided to you with the highest degree of accuracy possible. However, the information we collect is only as good as the way it is presented. Our in-depth knowledge of farming allows us to customise your data and generate maps that are both mobile and simple to understand — so you can make important decisions with confidence, wherever you are. A GPS-it farm map will help you: • work out your per hectare costs versus income • record and track fertiliser applications

• allocate stock rates and plan and record movement • estimating fencing costs and plan paddock rotation • comply with health and safety regulations and identify hazards Our GPS-it farm maps provide a highly accurate view of your entire property, capturing your land features with GPS points, as well as precise land size and areas. The only way to effectively and consistently manage your farm is with a GPS-it farm map in front of you. Pasture management Even though our eyes are in the sky our feet are firmly on the ground. We take the guesswork out of pasture measurement and management with our platemeters. GPS-it electronic rising platemeters are an easy, reliable and precise way to measure pasture growth and health. These are New Zealand’s original platemeters and have been used by farmers for years — proven time and again to be strong,

accurate and dependable. All of our platemeters come with free pasture cover software, which is a valuable tool for recording and reporting on the pasture information collected. Platemeter models include the F200 — a great starting model. The results need to be written down after each paddock. Gives dry matter per hectare or average height. Audio alarm at 30 plonks (samples) will continue to average out any further plonks. The F300 is for the person who

hates to write — no more pad and paper! Storage of up to 100 paddocks in simple format. Uploads the farm walk directly into P-Plus software via USB. The F400 is top of the line and fully automated with customisable paddock names and can store up to 250 paddocks. The last walk data is available in the field and it has an autocalibration feature. Upload and download your data between the platemeter and the P-Plus software via USB.

Take the guess work out of farming Farm mapping

Every decision you make on your farm can be linked back to the size of your land. An accurate and current farm map is the key for your entire operation. As New Zealand’s farm mapping pioneers and experts, we use the latest technology to make sure your data is captured and provided to you with the highest degree of accuracy available. The only way to effectively manage your farm - is to have it right in front of you.

Getting good pasture foundation The farming diary needs to look forward by several months, and it is not too early in fact to plan for next spring and getting the foundations right for a winter feed management programme. Rural contractors can be a key player in pasture preparation and getting the expert assistance with quality machinery can play a big part in successful planning and preparation. Pasture management for dairying though June, July and August, is about transferring autumn and winter grown pasture into early spring to achieve target average pasture cover (APC) at calving and meet the feed requirements of the milking herd. DairyNZ’s advice is that this is achieved by lengthening the rotation in late autumn and winter, beyond the time taken to grow three new leaves. Moist, cool conditions mean tiller death is low. Ryegrass is forgiving of stress, such as severe grazing, except where high soil moisture leads to pugging damage. Good management to improve persistence involves grazing at the three-leaf stage. Use the spring rotation planner to manage the transition from winter to spring and ensure appropriate covers are reached in spring. Winter is the time of year where grazing below 7 clicks/1,500kg DM/ha does not appear to damage ryegrass growth. Poor management that will reduce persistence includes pugging, which reduces tiller density and allows weed ingress and reduces subsequent

pasture production. Consider standing cows off on races/feed pads. Grazing at high stock density on wet soils (reduces subsequent pasture production by up to 45% the following year). High farm covers in August (leads to shading and loss of tiller density). It is important to determine the leaf stage of your own pastures. Leaf appearance rates mainly depend on temperature and water availability with leaves taking longer to appear in colder temperatures, or where water is limited. Italian or short rotation ryegrasses offer a pasture renewal opportunity, which can kick-start the milking season, according to research led by AgResearch senior scientist David Stevens and scientist Andrew Wall. Key findings are that short rotation ryegrasses have greater cool season

growth potential than perennial ryegrass. However, they have shorter lifespans and are less persistent. Using short rotation ryegrasses as part of a pasture renewal strategy can boost spring pasture production, decreasing reliance on supplements. Researchers used shorter grazing intervals to maintain pasture quality. Short rotation ryegrasses have a greater cool season growth potential and have superior dry matter (DM) production over winter and early spring when compared with perennial ryegrass. Some studies have also indicated that herbage may be of a higher feed value during the winter and early spring period.

Planning for safety and security A farm management plan goes a long way in securing property against breaching regional council regulations on fertiliser and nutrient contamination, particularly as applied to waterways. Evolving regulations mean keeping up to date can be time consuming and more and more farmers are turning to specialist contractors to take the worry out of issues like safety and chemical storage, equipment maintenance and a myriad other on farm tasks. A trained consultant can take the pressure off by evolving a comprehensive farm plan that will not only record fertiliser storage and application but also other ‘hotspots’, which may include silage pits, offal pits, farm dumps, feed pads, effluent ponds, stock yards, stock camps, stock wintering areas, flat areas at the bottom of a catchment and wash down areas. The farm map should include land management units, soil types, paddock boundaries, farm tracks, buildings, and any sensitive areas.

Land management units are parcels of the farm that are similar in soil type, contour, management etc. Management units may be individual paddocks or groups of paddocks. The soil names are less important than the properties of the soil, such as its texture (sand, silt, clay, peat), drainage characteristics and the potential rooting depth (depth to stones, water table, iron pan etc). Regional councils should have copies of soil maps for your region, but simple tactile examination of the soils will determine if they are sands, silts or clays. Problems with drainage may be seen as blue-grey bands in the profile. Regular, recorded visual soil assessments (VSA) provide valuable data about changes in your soil’s quality. Electromagnetic (EM) surveys can tell you about paddock scale variation in soil properties and this is a starting point for variable management for fertilisers — nutrients and irrigation. EM mapping is a process that maps the relative conductivity of the soils in your paddock.

Environmentally sensitive areas include retired areas, steep slopes, wetlands, native bush, waterways, washdown areas and areas where water ponds. Appropriate placement of fertiliser stocks, as well as depth of farm dumps and offal pits is important to minimise nutrients getting into water bodies. It’s probably not practical to move existing dumps or offal holes, but farmers should carefully consider potential environmental effects when installing new ones. Check your regional council regulations and requirements. A good farm plan will also show fertilisers stored separate from other chemicals in dry conditions. Provide pallets to keep large drums or bags off the floor. Shelves for smaller containers should have a lip to keep the containers from sliding off easily. Keep the storage area locked and clearly labeled as a fertiliser storage area and prevent unauthorised use. Labels on the windows and doors of the building give firefighters information about fertilisers and other products present during an emergency response to a fire or a spill.

Don’t leave equipment idle

There’s often many thousands of dollars tied up in farm machinery, and the days when it could just be parked in the shed until needed are long gone. Farm equipment needs to earn its keep. Many rural contracting enterprises have started over the farm kitchen table and agriculture equipment standing idle is not going to help the bottom line. Many farmers take the opportunity to undertake contract work to boost their income sources and like any business venture, care is the keyword and the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some advice on how to proceed in tendering for contracts. It says tendering for work can be time-consuming, but it can also lead to substantial rewards. ‘You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the preparation work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’ it says. Tendering is the process involved in responding to an RFx, a catch-all term meaning Request for information, a quote, a proposal, or tender. ‘An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straight forward, but applying for larger or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. ‘You’ll need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise. ‘Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and

TokaToka Lime

Co Ltd

whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. ‘Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply.’ Think about the day-to-day and longterm effects on your business - before

applying, ask yourself: Do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment?

Farmers must make sure that any risks from farm work are reasonably managed, eliminated or minimised, to protect the health and safety of contractors entering their property. They must ensure risks from any previous work carried out on the farm such as spraying hazardous substances are reasonably managed to protect others, and that farm buildings and any area where work is being carried out (apart from the farmhouse) is also safe for everyone. Contractors need to also ensure that they keep farmers healthy and safe. This includes reasonably managing any risks from their work that could affect the farmer, farm workers or other contractors on the farm. Worksafe requirements note that if a risk can’t be eliminated then it must be minimised, so far as is reasonably practicable. It is advised that farmers and contractors need to consult, cooperate and coordinate activities with each other. It is important that they work together

to meet their overlapping duties every time a contractor enters on to the farm. Having a face-to-face or over the phone meeting before work commences can help to establish clear roles, responsibilities and actions. This will also prevent any gaps in managing health and safety risks. The more influence and control a farmer or contractor has over a health and safety matter, the more responsibility they are likely to have. Make sure you have a list including contact details of workers and managers and always where the contractor will be working or going on the property. Ensure each person knows what risks are involved, both expected and think of the unexpected. Make sure everyone is aware of other work activity on the farm and if this can pose a risk to them or others, and have a plan on managing and communicating information regarding any dangers. Ensure contractors know farm rules

such as speed limits, alcohol and any expectations of their on farm behaviour. Communicate any relevant emergency procedures and determine an appropriate time in/time out for reporting. Having a backup plan is important, particularly if there is no phone coverage and it is also a good idea to consider printing and marking-up a farm map to show hazards. Contractors should call in at the farmhouse, or phone before starting work so that it is known they are on the property and if necessary, they should ask for help to get across rough terrain using an appropriate vehicle. Contractors should also communicate with the farmer any changes in the work that may create additional risks to other persons and discuss any concerns they may have. Working together ultimately helps keep everyone concerned safe and allows for a positive experience.

Fencing made easy by Ann Morgan

Fencing contractors can cater to a vast variety of fencing requirements on different properties, from the standard post and batten to more artistic creations. “If you have the old batten fences that have moss all over them and they are in disrepair, it is often cheaper to get a whole new one built and doing this means it should have a good 20 year lifetime,” says Brad Brien, owner of Brad Brien Fencing Ltd. “Different animals need different types of fence. For example sheep need seven wire batten, but with cows you can get away with five wires and you can make it electric. If it is a boundary fence you require at least a seven wire batten. “Bulls need solid fencing to keep them in because they get boisterous and if they fight each other, they can easy break through a fence — they also need electric fences.” He says with rural fencing, including lifestyle blocks, a contractor can place internal fences anywhere the owner requires them to be located. “If you want a hexagon, octagon or triangle paddock we can usually make one. Rural fencing is my main style, but I do enjoy helping with more creative styles. These add to variety in a fencing contractor’s day and they make a property look really nice as well.

“New lifestyle block owners often discover that they don’t have enough fences and this is when they can call a fencer to help them sort out what they need. Sometimes a fence is too close to a house, or you need a paddock rearranged — reduced in size or made larger. Fences are relatively easy to establish, but it is important they are made correctly.” Brad says normally rural blocks have post and rail or the conventional seven wire batten fence. “A fence can be simple or extravagant, it generally depends on what the client is after and what stock you have, such as goats, cattle, sheep or horses. People often look at styles; other people have to decide what they require or want. “Deciding if you need new fencing is relatively easy and a contractor can go through this with you, if you need advice. “When you move onto a property and want to check if your fences are in a good state, walk the whole fence line and check if your wires are tight, and make sure there are no broken wires or loose and rotting posts. AG CONTRACTORS

Pasture holds the key to growth There is a variety of opinion when it comes to the best pastures for the best production, usually prompted by regional experience, but what is certain, is the need to consider pasture quality as well as quantity in feeding livestock. Getting a contractor with experience is half the battle when planning new pasture and preparing the land for regrassing and fodder crops. Over time the buyers of New Zealand meat have come to expect a standard, and in more and more cases importers are buying to end customer specification in terms of carcase weights and timing. As stocking rates have dropped, and per animal performance targets have become more important, pasture quality has become a critical constraint to achieving potential growth rates. Findings from New Zealand and international research have been refined by Beef and Lamb New Zealand who also offer in-depth pasture advice on their website. Here farmers can find a simple method of assessing pasture quality in the field for everyday use on

farm, and in instructing contractors on their vision. Visual assessments of dead matter, legume content, grass leaf and grass stem are turned into quantitative estimates of nutritive value by the computer software package Q-Graze, which adds the effects of grazing to estimate the growth of young animals on that pasture. Measuring the nutritive value of a pasture can be done by direct laboratory assessment or by indirect visual assessment. Laboratory measurements include metabolisable energy (ME), digestibility, fibre and protein. How much do animals eat and why? What drives potential intake? The potential feed intake of animals is determined by physiological state (e.g. pregnancy, lactation, sex) and genetics. The

animals’ health and the feed offered determine whether the potential is reached. Intake is influenced by the amount of pasture offered to the animal, commonly estimated as pasture cover, pre- and post-grazing dry matter yield or height. The more that is offered, the more

that can potentially be eaten, up to a maximum where increased pasture dry matter yield has no more influence on intake and live weight gain. This has to be balanced by the need to keep pasture quality high, ensure good regrowth and maintain economic stocking rates.

HORTICULTURE ADVERTORIAL

A passion for olives Nestled in the foothills of the Brynderwyns, near the small town of Mangawhai in Northland, sits the picturesque olive grove, Olives on the Hill, owned by Chris and Linda Smith.

With its Mediterranean climate, the beautiful rural setting is also home to The Grove Supply Co. They provide anything that a small to medium olive grower would need, from harvesting equipment including the fantastic Mambo Karbonium, brilliant deleafers, nets, rakes and bins. “We have a huge range of fustis and stainless steel tanks, taps, filters, cappers, fruit presses and an amazing olive press/ malaxer combination,” says Linda. “We also have equipment for orchardists to crush and press other fruits.” Chris and Linda recently took the opportunity to travel to Italy, visiting Sansone and Zanon, their two main suppliers of plant and machinery. Sansone and Zanon are high-quality brands; and The Grove Supply Co. is the only official distributor of Sansone products in New Zealand. She reflects that the trip was incredibly successful. Meeting the people who they do business with face-to-face has enabled strong relationships to be established, that will result in benefits being passed on to customers of The Grove Supply Co. “We’ve managed to negotiate very good deals with both Sansone and Zanon, which will form the basis of a review of all our equipment prices this year. There will be some very special deals resulting from the prices that we have negotiated.” After visiting their Italian suppliers, Linda and Chris moved on to Spain for 10 days, joining an Olives New Zealand tour of olive groves led by its president, Andrew Taylor. Deeply passionate about New Zealand’s

growing olive oil industry, Chris and Linda say the visit to the Spanish groves was very encouraging. “I really believe that the olive industry can compete on the world stage but we have to compete on quality, producing really top quality oil. I think we can definitely do that,” explains Linda. “We just have to work out the best way to do that for our climate.” The Grove Supply Co. customers can visit the website — theolivegrove.co.nz. Chris and Linda welcome customers to call in at their grove where they can chat about olives, taste the oil and view the equipment.

The good Fodda When you cross an eco-conscious Kiwi cafe owner with a Swiss soil scientist, the result is the creation of a totally natural and eco-friendly product for busy gardeners called Fodda — Feeding the Earth. Fodda organic fertiliser and enhancers feed the earth, is slow-release and diverts waste from landfill. “I was dismayed by the amount of waste I was throwing away at my busy Bay of Islands cafe such as organic coffee grounds. I was sure there was a better use for these nutrient-rich waste products rather than taking up space as landfill,” says Dianne Pilcher. Dianne started to experiment with different concoctions on both her indoor and outdoor plants. With the results she achieved, she realised she might be on to something others would appreciate. “I sent my samples to Andreas Kurmann, a soil scientist at the Far North Envirolab. He is also passionate about working towards a sustainable environment.” Andreas has discovered a number of natural ways to prepare, enhance and aerate the soil that worked with the earth rather than stripping it of precious nutrients. “We know many people don’t have the time or space for proper composting but want a natural soil enhancer, so we joined forces to make our natural product available. When people purchase Fodda they are backed by good technical evidence for products that are non-toxic, have no residue,

are biodegradable and increase the growth rate of healthy plants. Fodda is odour free, improves soil water storing ability, and is safe to use around children and pets. It enhances the growth of beneficial soil microorganisms and creates a nitrogen depot that supports the slow release of natural fertilisers already in the soil. This provides plant roots with readily available nutrients and also improves soil water storing ability. “The premium natural organic fertiliser turbo boosts your veggies. Once the soil has been prepared with Fodda soil enhancer, apply Fodda organic general fertiliser to guarantee the sustained growth of your plants. This feeds the plants with all the major elements in the right quantities and has more than 45 trace elements to promote healthy growth. A healthy plant will take up high quantities of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium for growth, and these elements need to be replaced in the soil with natural products.” The company also has various other products available such as Fodda untreated New Zealand pine seedling trays and Fodda trowels — a ‘must-have’ gardening tool. Managing large ‘problem’ poplars vital

Huge, decades old poplar trees planted for streamside erosion control are causing big headaches for both landowners and the Northland Regional Council. “The council is a big supporter of poplars for erosion control, but in today’s environment, using them to mainly target erosion-prone hill country, it is recommended to choose varieties like Kawa, which are smaller when mature,” says Councillor Justin Blaikie. The council also recommends that willows like Matsudana (and similar) are used near waterways instead of poplars. “Unfortunately, between the 1920s and the 1960s, relatively large numbers of Aspen poplars, (which can grow more than 30 metres tall, with trunks more than a metre thick) were planted to thwart streamside erosion all over Northland. Lombardy poplars, which can grow to similar sizes, were also popular over that period. “Some of those surviving trees are now ‘seriously big’ and as they begin to succumb to old age/disease or storms, floods and other adverse events are increasingly having a negative and costly impact on the very environments they were originally planted to protect.” The trees are so large that they can stretch right across waterways and when they topple, can have a very effective damming effect, worsening flooding, erosion and other problems. They can also damage electricity lines, roading and other valuable and costly infrastructure.

The council is currently arranging the removal of two large Aspen poplars that have fallen into the Waihou River — both just a few metres from a road bridge and power lines. “Removing these two trees alone will be no small feat and is likely to take a number of days and cost up to $10,000; and they’re just two of many problematic trees in the immediate area. “While the regional council has overall responsibility for river and catchment management across Nor thland, landowners are responsible for ‘normal’ maintenance of rivers and streams on and around their properties. “Council does undertake removal of major blockages and obstructions that affect public infrastructure beyond normal landowner maintenance on a prioritised basis; effectively footing the bill for the wider public good. “That’s what’s happening in this case — these two trees are a major threat to significant public infrastructure, including a bridge, road and power lines that provide the only access to the Rahiri community. “Situations like this are a significant and increasing issue and have some major cost implications for landowners, local authorities generally and our shared ratepayers.”

Doug Foster from NRC beside a decades old poplar that has fallen across the entire width of a stream near Okaihau

With very large poplars now causing issues Northland-wide, the council is urging landowners to be proactive, checking their properties to ensure problem trees are dealt with — including removal if necessary — well before any difficulties arise. As well as avoiding potentially much greater problems in the future, effective river management makes good sense on multiple fronts. “By working proactively with Northland landowners on effective

river management, we can collectively reduce erosion, protecting valuable soil and sedimentation — improving water quality — and of course lessen potentially costly flood damage.” The council’s river management team can provide a range of riverrelated advice, which is also available online at nrc.govt.nz/rivermanagement. Information about establishing poplars and willows is also available via: nrc. govt.nz/poplars

We are also eager to develop a calendar of significant annual events to attract visitors to the area. “We would also like to identify how we would like Dargaville to be perceived in-line with our environment and develop a nationwide campaign that will promote this image to both regional and offshore visitors.” The Governance Board is made up of executive officers and 10 appointed members representing community groups and people with varying skills. “We meet bimonthly to establish desired initiatives and projects that meet the criteria of the board’s core business. Members of the board act in an advisory capacity, to ensure the activities of the board are in-line with community desires and needs and that they are executed in a best practice, professional manner.” The DCDB will support groups and organisations

already established in the community, providing assistance as required. “We have part-time staff who will also assist to facilitate any project that will have desired benefits/outcome for our community at large. “Over the past year we have been successful with grant applications to assist with our own projects, while also assisting several local community groups to secure funding for their own projects. These grant applications have been successful to a total value of approximately $200,000. “We encourage entrepreneurs, developers and investors to contact us if they have an idea or business venture that we can assist to make happen.” Visit our website dargavillenz.com, check our marquee site location in the Northland Field Days programme or visit the Information Centre, outside HQ.

Encouragement to support each other Many dairy farmers, from one end of New Zealand to the other, have had a rough few months. If it’s not been flood or drought conditions, then it’s been understanding how to protect their farms from Mycoplasma bovis. DairyNZ Wellness and Wellbeing Programme leader Dana Carver says it has been a tough time for farmers and for some there are signs that it’s beginning to take a toll on their wellbeing. Farmers who are feeling stressed are encouraged to contact the Rural Support Trust. “Don’t be shy to ask for help — there are a number of rural organisations you can turn to. If you are unsure who to approach, I recommend the Rural Support Trust as your first point of contact. Depending on your situation, they can refer you to the best person to help you,” says Dana. “The great thing about the Rural Support Trust is that it is a free service — run by local rural people who understand the pressures of farming.” Her main advice to farmers is to stay connected. “It is natural when things get tough to isolate yourself, but this is the worst thing you can do. It is important to stay connected and support one another.” South Canterbury Rural Support Trust representative Sarah Barr says the number of calls they have received is up on average across the

country due to M bovis and the extreme weather. Most calls related to emotional stress are often linked to concerns about financial repercussions. Ms Barr says that the concern about M bovis being found on farms is understandably causing farmers more stress, and she encourages all farmers to seek information about the disease to help prevent scaremongering. “If you discover someone in your community has had their farm test positive for M bovis, now is when they need your support the most, when having a community looking after one another is crucial. “The best thing farmers can do to help reduce concerns over M bovis is to take precautions to reduce the risk of the disease spreading to their farm. “The best thing you can do is to implement good biosecurity practices on farm. “When you take action you feel like you’ve got some control over the situation.” For farmers wanting more information visit rural-support.org. nz, call 0800 RURAL HELP, or visit dairynz.co.nz.

The red clover casebearer moth (Coleophora deauratella) discovery set off alarm bells and prompted a nationwide monitoring campaign. Special pheromone traps were distributed to red clover growers across the country over this summer’s clover growing and flowering period. “Traps were placed on farms from the lower North Island to the south of the South Island,” says FAR Seed Research manager Richard Chynoweth. “The results are not good news for red clover growers, with moths being found on farms, roadsides and other areas everywhere from Wairarapa to Southland. “As it was first identified in Auckland, we can assume they will be found across the North Island as well. Given the numbers and spread of this pest, it seems likely that it has been here for quite a while. “My guess is at least a decade and could have been affecting red clover seed yields for several years.” Red clover casebearer is a small moth (about 8mm long) and is very similar to two other species of clover casebearer moth (Coleophora spp) that are already well established in white clover, however it’s principal host is red clover. Adult moths lay eggs on developing red clover flower heads and once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the

florets to feed, destroying the growing seed. As the larvae grow, they adhere themselves to a chewed off floret, using it like a cape or case for protection and camouflage. Feeding damage to seeds can severely impact on crop yields. “Not a lot is known about red clover casebearer in New Zealand,” says Mr Chynoweth. “We will continue to monitor its spread, but we need to understand its life cycle and exactly how that links with the red clover growth cycle. Once we have a clearer idea of that, we can start to consider control options, so that arable farmers can continue to grow this specialist crop. “We carried out initial laboratorybased insecticide trials and the results indicate that some insecticides currently registered for use in clover crops are effective against red clover casebearer moth.” To check crops for the presence of red clover casebearer — inspect flowers looking for millimetre-sized holes chewed into the base of individual florets, or distinctive black droppings, also at the base of the florets. You may also see the casebearer moth larvae, which look like small red-brown cigars on the flowers. If evidence of casebearer is found, discuss management with your crop agrichemical advisor.

Emma Smith — Director and Ihapera Bentson

Director Emma Smith built the business from scratch three years ago. Since then her business has continued to flourish and she recently welcomed a second barrister and solicitor, Ihapera Bentson, nee Paniora, on board. “Our capacity has increased to meet the growing demand and we are anticipating further growth in the near future,” says Emma. “It’s a positive indication about starting and developing a business in Dargaville and Northland. It is very easy for young professionals to think they have to leave Dargaville/Northland to get this calibre of work but we punch above our weight and work alongside the big city firms, which shows that it is possible to have a career and a lifestyle right here.” Both Emma and Ihapera were born and raised in Dargaville before moving away to gain their qualifications. Both have returned to Dargaville — Emma nearly nine years ago after 14 years in the UK and Ihapera two years ago — and with both having young energetic sons, they intend to be here for the long-term. “We are both very committed to our community and to providing a quality service in a comfortable, yet confident environment. We offer a range of

services, specialising in litigation and dispute resolution, employment matters, relationship property planning, business support and estate planning. Our estate planning business is growing and our litigation practice is extremely busy.” Emma says she is thankful to have a good support network around her. “I’ve got great colleagues, clients and support from the community. Of course, my family and friends are always hugely supportive.” The practice will be employing two more administration support staff in the next few months taking the team to six, with the possibility of a further lawyer and support team member by the end of the year.

Certified essential oils Founded in 2008, doTERRA was built on the mission of sharing therapeutic-grade essential oils with the world. Having seen for themselves the incredible benefits that can be had from using these precious resources, a group of healthcare and business professionals set out to make this mission a reality. “We retired from farming, and our daughter introduced us to doTERRA oils as a health alternative and gave us the opportunity to do something in our retirement,” says Rod and Lyn Blagrove. “doTERRA is a Latin derivative meaning ‘gift of the earth’, and we joined the company as wellness advocates to replace the toxins and chemicals in our home with a plant-based alternative. Our goal is to share these incredible oils with not only family and friends, but to help others in supporting their overall health and wellbeing. “If you have enjoyed the scent of a rose, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils.” The naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells and play a role in plant pollination. They are often used for immune support, relaxation and sleep, stress relief, emotional balance, skin care, respiratory health, muscle tension and pain, and green cleaning. “Essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment and healthcare practices, and can replace items in your medicine cabinet

safely,” says Lyn. “doTERRA essential oils are carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy. “Each essential oil is carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality protocol, and experienced essential oil users will immediately recognise the superior quality standard. “The company is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of farmers, harvesters and distillers, and with more than 100 products available,

doTERRA sources its oils from more than 40 countries, and to ensure that small-scale farmers and harvesters in disadvantaged areas are treated ethically, doTERRA has introduced an initiative called Co-Impact Sourcing. This helps create coalitions of growers and distillers that ensure local communities receive fair and timely payments to support their families and communities. BUSINESS PROFILE

Serious about fencing Troy Knudsen has a background in farm fencing and engineering. In 2015 he decided to combine the two and created his own business manufacturing post drivers and side mounts. Troy grew up in Tomarata with his family heavily involved in the farm fencing and manufacturing industry. He then went on to work as a fencing contractor for GT Fencing, which is based out of Tomarata. From there Troy moved back into the engineering field for several years. He then decided to combine his love of fencing and engineering and start his own company called FENCEQUIP. “We currently have two models of post drivers on the market: The HD — which has been designed for fencing contractors and the MD — which has been designed for farmers that still do a serious amount of fencing” says Troy. FENCEQUIP also has two models of side mounts on the market: The 1m Side Mount and the 1m Multi-Option Side Mount and as their name suggests they have 1m of sideways hydraulic travel. The Multi-Option Side Mount has proven to be a real hit with fencing contractors as well as farmers. It allows the post driver to be positioned either on the right-hand side, rear mount or the left-hand side of the tractor. “The machine is the first in its field to have 1m of travel plus retaining the counterweight and toolbox in all three positions, making it extremely versatile and user-friendly,” he says. FENCEQUIP also builds custom-made vineyard side mounts and pile drivers that are made to fit excavators.

Five tips for staying on top It’s no secret that farming is a tough job. From weather challenges, to the ups and downs of the industry, farmers are often battling many factors they have little control over. But what you can control is how you deal with these challenges—that’s where Farmstrong can help. Founded by FMG and the Mental Health Foundation, Farmstrong recognises the joy, but also the pressure, farming can bring and the importance of looking after your well-being. The Farmstrong team are going to be at the Northland Field Days with advice and tips, so make sure you find some time to come and chat to them. You’ll also get the chance to go into a draw to win a signed rugby ball from Sam Whitelock, Farmstrong’s ambassador. With his background in professional rugby and farming, Sam understands the pressures of performing in a tough environment, so here are a few things he’ll be ‘locking in’ to make sure he stays on top of his game. 1. Connect “Rugby means I travel a lot, so I make sure that whenever I can, I spend quality time with my friends and family. I find that talking with people away from the farm, or rugby in my case, helps to recharge me and just freshens things up.” 2. Take notice “With work and the general pace of life, it’s sometimes easy to forget the wonderful things we already have in life.

SAFETY FIRST

I always try to put down the tools for a while and take stock of all the great things that are right in front of us. The things we sometimes forget to notice when we’re busy.” 3.Sleep “It’s a simple little thing, but so important. How often do you feel on top of your game after getting a quality forty winks? There are a heap of sleep tips on the Farmstrong website. To clear my head at the end of the day I like to read in bed and make a list of all the things I need to do the next day.” 4.Plan to stop “Building or running a successful business, or in my case rugby team, requires dedication and commitment. At the same time a quality break from the farm (or rugby paddock) doesn’t just happen, it needs to be planned. Whenever you can, take the time to plan a trip away, so you can stop and have a break.” 5. Goal setting “I’m as guilty as anyone in setting goals and not always following through. What I do now is, when I want to develop new habits at any time of the year, I write them down or tell friends. We’re more likely to make good on our commitment if we tell others what we’re going to do.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES February 2018 ADVERTORIAL

Do you own Bitcoin? Is bitcoin just another bubble doomed to crash and burn, or a brilliant way to transact with one another person-to-person outside our current centralised banking system. What do you think? Unless you have been sleeping under your hedge on your farm for the last year, it has been very hard not to hear the words ‘bitcoin’ and ‘cryptocurrency’. Many everyday people have made thousands, and in some cases millions of dollars by just being an early adopter and holding bitcoin before the gigantic rise in price from $1,000 in Jan 2017, to over $19,000 USD by the end of Dec 2017. Did you grab your share of bitcoin profits simply by being in at the right time? Bitcoin moves in cycles just like seasons on a farm. To have a successful season preparation is very important, similarly, knowledge is needed to prepare for the next bitcoin cycle and price rally. With such an awakening going on, and companies scrambling to get their own stake in the digital currency, the

BUSINESS PROFILE

The versatile garden Vegepod has become known to farmers across the country as the versatile gardening system that keeps precious rainwater and vegetables in, and pests and animals out. “The pods allow gardeners to grow their own vegetables in small or large spaces, and since Vegepod’s launch in New Zealand two years ago, people living rurally have come to appreciate the self-watering container gardens,” says company director Lisa Lowe. Vegepods come small enough for retirement home units or balconies, or large enough for farms or lifestyle properties. “The Vegepods have their own irrigation unit in a special mesh canopy with reservoir tanks that collect rain water under the soil. The water goes through the soil into the tanks and the roots can go down and drink. When it rains they also drink from above. “Self-watering means the garden can take care of itself and uses 80 per cent less water than a normal garden.”

A mesh canopy clips over the unit and helps eliminate weeds and keep pests and animals such as white butterfly, birds, cats, stock and possums out. “Pests are one of the reasons gardens fail and as the cover keeps things warm — you can even grow lettuces in the middle of winter. “Stands and wheels are an optional extra and these raise the pod to waist height so bending over is eliminated — the wheels make it easy for anyone to move the garden location around. “The smaller is great for people in retirement villages or units and it comes in a kitset form with a warranty, and is easy to assemble as no tools are required. Being a modular system, the pods can be attached together to create the size you want. We are proud to be part of a good-quality product that

Many of our clients are enjoying having gardening back in their lives. “Farmers are loving the product because they capture and recycle rainwater, meaning your tank water is protected from having to be used for gardens, and the covers also keep cows, chickens and rabbits out. Rural people are having more success than

they have had with traditional gardens, as they can be placed close to the home and they are buying three or more at a time. “The whole organic, grow your own food is important to people nowadays so the Vegepods are fitting in well. “We will be at the Northland Field Days on site 136A.” For more information visit vegepod. co.nz or phone Lisa on 021 442 273.

The eco-friendly way by Ann Morgan

The idea of a ‘valley vista’ eco retreat was something Beth Stone had always wanted to have as her retirement project, and her dream became a reality near the Kaiwaka township.

B

eth and Barry had often spoken about ‘getting out of town’ and they purchased the 70 acre property in May 2015. It used to be a dairy run off and the original owner still grazes a mixture of cattle on the farm keeping it in the farming image. “It is great having a mixture of animals running around and we are in the process of planting a vineyard with 300 grapevines we were gifted and we intend to make our own label for wine in the future,” says Beth. “The property was bare land to begin with and we have added an old Californian bungalow and a couple of small guest accommodation buildings. We are also planting 100 olive trees and are looking at the possibility of growing watercress as a crop. Our water here

is beautiful and clean and the plant has many positive health benefits such as iron, and it is known to be a good antioxidant.” The couple live totally off the grid and use solar power and a bio-cycle sewerage system which uses a wormerator and they have an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and gas burners, as well as a pizza oven. “Going eco-friendly was important to me. When I was younger we were heading toward organic certification on our property and when Barry and I moved here we decided to go totally off grid. We do have a backup generator but mainly use solar power. “We have created gardens with herbs and vegetables and we have a traditional English shepherd’s hut which my brother

We also made a container house which we renovated ourselves — it is lovely having a few different buildings scattered around the setting.” The farm has six acres of bush with one marked trail and Beth and Barry are marking out other walking trails. “Our bush goes seamlessly through to a DOC reserve and you can walk for miles if you want. There is all sorts of wildlife here to see and we are fascinated at times when we hear a kiwi call — it is an amazing experience. “We have absolutely gorgeous views, and we overlook a couple of lakes and have a view of Great Barrier island. We like to encourage pony clubs and horse riders to come and take advantage of the property on weekends. With 70 acres there is room for people to wander around and enjoy the countryside. “We live next door to a free-range egg farm and there are three flocks. They all have their own paddocks and are constantly moved around. It is nice to know the critters are being well cared for. “Recently we held a local business expo in Kaiwaka and out of that two business networking groups have started. It is a great way for farmers to meet each other and get to know who is in the area. I am also enjoying making lemon honey and marmalade for the local food banks — it is great to support others in the area. “Every morning we wake up and say we live here — it is amazing. Cheese rural bliss by Ann Morgan Teaching cheese making in Paparoa, ‘the village in the valley’ in Kaipara, Jas Futter is still loving the rural life after escaping Auckland with her husband Noel 16 years ago.

“W

e came up to the Kaipara one day to have a look at what the area is like and we enjoyed it so much that we went back to Ellerslie and sold our house. We were packed up in six weeks — it shocked us as much as everybody else,” says Jas. The couple love the rural lifestyle and haven’t looked back. “We love the people — it is a great little village and has got a lot going for it.” Jas’s cheese hobby started five years ago, with Fiona from Sahara Restaurant in the village needing a ride to Auckland to participate in a cheese making class. “I thought it was probably the most boring thing that I could do, but I ended

up taking the class as well and really enjoyed it,” said Jas. “After that we used to make cheese in Fiona’s restaurant kitchen. Then Fiona and Nick moved overseas and I went to visit them in France. We talked about my returning and taking up cheese making again, and my classes in Paparoa eventuated when I took a cheese board to a function and people said my cheese was great and that I should teach people, so that is how it happened — I fell into it.” Since then, Jas has been back to Europe to take more cheese making classes and upskill herself. and Franklin Gardens is the name of the property and road she lives on. “I get my milk from four goats and I have a local supplier for my organic cow’s milk. I recently started my own flock of specialty bred milking sheep for producing milk this coming season. “I run my classes on weekends and work as an occupational health nurse but am retiring this year, so there will be more weekdays available for classes. “I love teaching people how to make cheese because it is the enjoyment they get from having a pot of milk and at the end of the class they go home with cheese. People are just gobsmacked — they love it. “Getting setup took a bit of work and getting the gear together took a while. I have a commercial kitchen, which my husband and friend built for me.” Jas teaches her students how to make different varieties of cheese including halloumi, feta, ricotta, camembert/ blue, farmhouse cheddar, chevre and vache. “There are four types of milk available for making cheese if you can get it — cow, goat, sheep and buffalo. Each have different levels of fat content with different textures and tastes. “Most soft cheeses are made by adding culture and rennet to the milk that has been heated to a specific temperature. All methods separate the milk into curds and whey. Using a mold basket or muslin cloth the whey is drained from the curd and what is left is cheese.” Hard cheeses are the same process, but a few extra steps are taken in the production.

“The curds are pressed together after draining and then moulded. This can be done with a press or just heavy weights and then the cheese is left to air dry for a few days before going into a cool, dry dark place to age. There are several ways that the cheddar can be aged — wax, salt washed, bandaged and vacuum-packed. “Flavours can be added to cheese along the way — I recently made a goat cheddar soaked in merlot and cold smoked some of it. Italian herb and garlic, and cumin are popular flavours that many people enjoy.”

BUSINESS PROFILE

Health and safety first Northland dairy farmer Annette Pull started her company, Total Business Compliance Ltd, to help other farmers. She does this by personally designing Health and Safety manuals, providing integrated management systems incorporating health and safety, environmental controls and quality management for farming businesses. Annette farms alongside her husband Syd and has nearly 20 years experience in the building and civil works industries. It is safe to say she has dealt with her fair share of compliance situations. The company services throughout Northland, Auckland and the Waikato as well as nationwide if required. “We are health and safety providers and are your helping hand, and believe in doing all the work for you. I am a local farmer and know what you need, including policies and procedures, monthly on farm

meetings and contractors’ agreements at highly competitive pricing, because I believe helping other farmers with our knowledge is a priority,” says Annette. “When I became a dairy farmer eight years ago, I was horrified at the penalties farmers were incurring with the new law changes, staff lawsuits, and non-compliance and I decided to help and support others affordably. We help businesses go forward without the worry of the paperwork.” “I had to step up with my knowledge and started designing personal health and safety manuals, and we give advice and train staff on farms. We help people identify farm hazards, and install reporting and recording processes.” Annette believes her farming clients can

sleep better at night knowing they have put the effort in to help their business in these areas. “We don’t just give you the paperwork to flounder through. We do it all — including providing the training you require for yourself and your staff and that is what sets our company apart from our competition.” Through Total Business Compliance, Annette has helped customers from the trucking industry, civil contractors, veterinary centres, dairy and beef farmers, and event centres. “We understand what life is like, we keep it simple and understandable and

can have you up and running within a couple of weeks. “There is no pressure and no stress — we want to enable you to do the things that you want to be able, so that you can enjoy life with your loved ones.” Annette has been nominated in the Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year competition for her contribution to the farming community. For more information contact Annette on 027 286 2329, go to totalbusinesscompliancelimited.co.nz or visit the team at site 606 in the rural pavilion at the field days. “Your helping hand”

PNEUMATIC AND GENERAL ENGINEERS Your local servicing & Sales agent for all brands of:

Many farmers across the country have successfully followed the biological farming method with excellent, sustainable results for several generations. Total Fert Ltd consultant Grant Fallon has a natural affiliation with the land and sustainable farming practices, and has worked in the agricultural/horticultural industry most of his working life. He was born and bred in Mangatawhiri, North Waikato, where his parents were farming after his father returned from serving in the second world war. “I have always been passionate about all facets of biology. I started working in orchards and glasshouses growing tomatoes and beans when I was still at college,” said Grant. He and wife Janice moved to their 42 hectares at Riponui in 1986 and farm the property the biological way. The land is primarily used for beef and sheep rearing, and they have planted 50 fruit trees in an orchard. “Modern biological farming uses nature and science to build the quality of the soil, with the understanding that healthy soil will be able to support healthy crops and livestock. This takes advantage of the natural processes, which promote good soil, healthy crops and healthy animals.” As a biological/organic fertiliser field consultant for 16 years, Grant has attended many instructional seminars in New Zealand and Australia, achieved a level 5 NZQA certificate in organic

growing and a certificate in small business management. “Excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides can upset the balance in the soil,” said Grant. “Productive soil is achieved by applying the correct volume and type of minerals after soil analysis. It is important to provide a food source for the biology and adopt best farming practices — stock rates, crop rotation and tillage methods. “These practices allow the natural system to develop superior soil structure and microbiology and improve crop quality. This helps increase stock yields and improves animal health and reduces negative environmental impacts by controlling waste such as leaching or effluent. “They also help control weeds, pests, diseases, and increase moisture content in the topsoil and improve drought resistance and the uptake of nutrients into the pasture and crops. “Many farmers are beginning to understand that natural fertilisers, along with best practice production methods, result in higher profitability of their farms, orchards and other agricultural productions.” Total Fert is BioGro certified and offers a full personal consultancy

Natural animal health Tineke Verkade’s passion for natural health and well-being with people and animals has led her to create a unique business using homeopathy and herbs in all aspects of farming industries. Homeopathic Farm Support (HFS) began in 1997 in response to repeated requests from farmers for quality homeopathic products and professional information, education, guidelines and support in the safe and effective use of homeopathy. Tineke is now well recognised in the New Zealand livestock and dairy farming communities. In November 2009, HFS won the Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ) Enterprise Award. Tineke was the supreme winner of the Enterprising Rural Women Award 2010. Many conventional farmers also now use homeopathy for animal health in their farming operation (exclusively or along with conventional medications), due to the success they have experienced using homeopathy to improve and maintain the health of their animals and the productivity of their farm. HFS Ltd provides for Dairy and Dry stock farmers: • Telephone Help desk • Provides Homeopathic products

• Information Pack • Quarterly Newsletters • Laminated Calendar and Reference Sheets • Books — The Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farmers, Homeopathy for Horses and Homeopathy at Home written by Tineke Verkade • Herbal AB (a herbal tonic and immune support product) • Natural Teat Conditioner (BioGro & MPI / ACVM) certified • Herbal Digestive Drench (BioGro & MPI / ACVM) certified • Annual representation at national and regional field days • One day seminars provided (New Zealand wide) • Present at the certified organic discussion groups (New Zealand wide) HFS Ltd has always placed a high value on free information and training to empower farmers to better care for their animals in a cost effective, efficient (and most importantly) natural way.

What does the soil say? Fertwise are soil and fertiliser experts new to the Northland Field Days this year and they bring with them Smart Fertiliser Solutions. “Fertwise are soil and fertiliser experts. We support farmers with Smart Fertiliser Solutions. With our Brookside laboratories soil tests, we understand exactly what your soil requires and tailor recommendations to maximise bottomline and minimise environmental impact” said a spokesperson. The founder, Kayol Robinson was born into the fertiliser industry. His father, Tom Robinson manufactured organic fertilisers under the BettaCrop brand before starting Earthwise, New Zealand’s leading range of eco-friendly home care products. “I spent a lot of time as a kid visiting farms with my dad, helping him take soil samples, interpreting the test results and making BettaCrop products. He was a man before his time and taught me many things about our natural environment” said Mr Robinson. “It wasn’t until my dad passed that I truly realised what knowledge I had acquired from him over the years. Having my own children sparked a real desire to go further to creating a healthier world for them to live. I started to organise what I knew about soil

and fertilisers. I needed to incorporate conventional fertilisers with new technology for better soil nutrition and to help accelerate farmers transition to sustainable farming practices.” Through smart, technological innovation, Fertwise creates fertiliser for healthier soils, for more nutritious pasture and crops, providing solutions that inspire, enable and empower farmers to find a better way — in accordance with the natural world — nature’s own laws. “We have working relationships with major fertiliser suppliers throughout New Zealand. That is the key to getting competitive pricing for the right products specific to each individual farm requirements” Mr Robinson said. “Dad always placed in my mind; personal or business, never violate the rights of others. Always do more than is expected. Encourage others to seek the truth, as it is often hidden from many by few. Believe in yourself and people will believe in you.” This is how Mr Robinson was raised and it is these instilled ethics and morals that will set Fertwise apart.

Understanding dairy farming Youngsters in Northland are getting the chance to experience dairy farming thanks to two couples taking part in DairyNZ’s Find a Farmer programme. Creating a link between urban and rural communities and showcasing farming to the next generation are just two reasons why Terence and Suzanne Brocx and William and Robyn Hori host school visits. Suzanne feels the connection many city families once had to relatives in the country has largely been lost. The Brocx’s and Hori’s say joining DairyNZ’s Find a Farmer service has been their attempt to re-establish that connection. Twice every year, the joint owners of Puketi Farms-Ohaeawai, host two school visits to their autumn calving farm. Suzanne has been pleased with the results, saying students and accompanying parents and teachers leave knowing at least one new thing about dairy farming and rural life. “Tamariki learn about milking, calf rearing, what we feed our cows, where our milk goes and what food it goes into, as well as about effluent management and how we look after our waterways,” says Suzanne. “While it does cost our business to host children, it is a great opportunity to showcase farming and rural life. We see ourselves as role models for dairy farming, not only as a career, but a way of life. At the same time, we are giving children an appreciation of where their

milk comes from.” To help educate the children on various aspects of farm life, the Puketi Farms team sets up four themed stations for the children to visit in groups. One of these stations gives children the chance to make their own butter by shaking cream, and then enjoy it spread on bread. The hosts also set up a station where children can learn to read ingredient labels and choose

everyday items that do and don’t contain dairy products. Schools that have been using DairyNZ’s education programme in the classroom can then register for Find a Farmer to link with a local farm. A field trip is a popular learning experience that reinforces the classroom work and Puketi Farms has been hosting school visits as part of DairyNZ’s in-

school programme since 2014. The programme, developed by DairyNZ and education specialists School Kit, is aligned with the New Zealand curriculum and covers Levels 1-11, using dairying as a context for learning. It aims to help children understand where milk comes from and what a varied, interesting, and significant sector dairying is, presenting it as a career option.

National testing for Mycoplasma bovis The Ministry for Primary Industries and its dairy industry partners have decided to extend the Mycoplasma bovis milk testing already underway into a national milk surveillance programme. While there is no indication that the disease is present beyond the areas currently identified, checking for other possible regional clusters is essential to building a complete picture of the disease in New Zealand. The programme will involve testing three milk samples from every dairy farm. One sample will be taken from bulk milk as part of the regular sampling process at milk collection. Farmers will also be required to provide two samples from ‘discard milk’ (milk unsuitable for collection, for example, from cows with mastitis). Mycoplasma bovis is more easily identified in milk taken from otherwise sick animals, which makes testing of the discard milk a valuable surveillance tool. The extended milk testing programme enhances the existing nationwide Mycoplasma bovis surveillance activity, which includes tracing of animal movements from infected and suspect farms, vets looking for signs of the disease, testing of any animals with clinical signs, and testing all mastitis milk sent to laboratories. Mycoplasma bovis is not a food safety risk. It is a disease that affects animal welfare and production and only affects bovines, including dairy cows and beef

Sorting the good effluent from the bad

POND DEATH

Effluent is an inevitable part of any dairy farm system, but few farmers stop to think about whether their effluent is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ — and what makes it so in the first place.

Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys? Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

What is good effluent, and what does it look like? A healthy effluent pond is clear and free from crust and when irrigated to pasture, the effluent is light-coloured to clear with very little odour. In contrast, an effluent pond with any form of crust on top demonstrates the effluent is tending towards poor. Underneath the crust is a section of ‘dead water’, and at the bottom of the pond, a sludgy buildup, whilst poor effluent, containing elevated levels of methane and nitric oxide as unprocessed solids, is dark and strong smelling when irrigated to pasture. A pond sitting at rest with no stirring, displays the true physical characteristics of the effluent. A pond that uses a solids separator or a weeping wall system may be difficult to read; a pH test will indicate whether your pond is dominated by aerobic (good) or anaerobic (bad) bacteria. Why is a healthy effluent pond free from crust and sludge? The crust on a pond is feed that has not been digested

by the cow. In a healthy pond, aerobic bacteria thrive and naturally digest these solids, creating clear, processed effluent that is ready for soil to absorb. Raw or anaerobic effluent contains solids, which still need to break down before the effluent can be utilised by the soil. What conditions determine the health of the pond? The health of the pond is determined by its pH levels, and which bacteria thrives under those conditions; a pond with a pH of 7.4 is ideal, creating a crustfree pond dominated by aerobic bacteria. “Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria have competitive exclusion — the further the pH drops below the equilibrium of pH7, the thicker the crust and the higher the percentage of anaerobic bacteria,” says biological consultant David Law. “Contrar y to popular belief, stirring does not change the biological makeup of the pond; it only temporarily breaks up the crust. Stirring a pond will not change the pond

from an anaerobic state to an aerobic state; it simply disrupts the job of the aerobic bacteria to eat the crust and later, the sludge. “If the aerobic bugs are not present, you must change the pH to support the introduction of them in the shortterm and follow-up with a review of farm biology and systems.”

The legend of bigfoot by Andy Bryenton

Tough, durable, and right at home on steep slopes and high, rough terrain — that’s the legendary description of bigfoot, the socalled yeti of Tibetan mythology and North American legend. But it’s an apt description for another bigfoot as well — the Kawasaki Mule bigfoot. From the start, Kawasaki engineers designed their mule range to be tough and hardy, like their namesake. Simplicity of construction and design means that it’s easy to keep a mule going in harsh conditions, and it spans the sweet spot between power and fuel economy as well.

You can tell that this side by side offroader has been designed by motorcycle legends. Kawasaki are no strangers to both the road and the dirt on two wheels, and they’ve adapted their engine tech to the task of powering a slower, but more strong and stable working machine. A 400cc overhead valve aircooled engine sits low in the frame for good weight distribution, and draws its air from high up in the tubular roll cage structure, ensuring clean air through the motor even in dusty conditions. A simple four-wheel drive system with locking rear differential and a limited slip front does the job in tough terrain, and this is where the bigfoot part of the mule’s name comes in. Literal ‘big feet’ — 12 inch rims with massive, knobbly off-road tyres allow for old fashioned off-roading tricks to be used, adjusting tyre pressure and floating over mud and slush where others would bog in. This wider footprint also prevents wheel ruts on pasture, protecting the substrate beneath as you pass. Simplicity too, dictates the cargo space — a tipping deck made of hardwearing diamond plate steel covered in scratch proof textured black paint

Simple and tough — the Kawasaki Mule has even been used as a search and rescue vehicle

can accommodate all your tools and hardware on the farm. And when the day is through, the simple and unfussy styling of the Kawasaki means it’s easier to get the mud off with the water blaster. There may be other machines out there

with higher top speeds, larger engines or flashier paint jobs. But the mule — and especially the bigfoot variant — are designed for work rather than show. If that’s what you need on the farm, give them a look this field days in Northland.

Stopping rust naturally It’s more than wool, which keeps sheep dry. Prolan NZ has enhanced the use of lanolin in sheep’s wool to manufacture industrial lanolin lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-seize greases, which stop rust. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware. Once Prolan is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long-term protection. Bikes can be water blasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value. There are also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser and trucking companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and fertiliser loaders’ chassis operating in harsh environments. Prolan is coated internally and underneath to provide protection. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from

rust since using Prolan products, less downtime on maintenance, fewer part replacements and increased resale values. Even vehicle testing stations are recommending the product to customers having problems with rust issues. Prolan has a strong following with key distributors Farmlands, Ullrich Aluminium and Anzor fasteners. The product is so versatile it is sought after by farmers, engineers, boaties, scaffolders, marinas, concrete companies and panelbeaters, with the added bonus it is safe to use and easy on the environment. With the great summer we are experiencing many of us are out on the water. The use of a life jacket is a must for small craft. If you are using an inflatable life jacket once the season is complete it is important to check the CO2 cylinder for corrosion. A simple squirt with Prolan once a year, will ensure your life jacket will inflate when you need it. We will have a life jacket on display at the field days demonstrating the use of Prolan for life jacket maintenance. We welcome your visit to our new site at the Northland Field Days 141B. On the other, it means you’re prepared to be the test case for possible teething problems with new technologies. In the world of electric transport, the early adopters have had a mixed run, with cars like Nissan’s Leaf and Mitsubishi’s plug-in range offering a look at the future. Infrastructure and range have been the stumbling blocks, but it’s all coming together now. Hyundai have waited until a great time to bring out their Ioniq all-electric car. We’re more accepting of the idea, charge points are popping up all over the nation, the battery technology has come of age, and the current scuttlebutt about Tesla’s production delays on the highly anticipated Model 3 has raised awareness of the demand for electric motoring. Silent, sleek and as easy to drive as a ‘normal’ fossil fuel burning model, the Ioniq made the shortlist for New Zealand Car of the Year, only pipped at the post by the Skoda Kodiaq in a case of ‘who wore that funky extra q better’. It’s hard to transfer the tech details into petrol friendly terms, but the Ioniq’s permanent magnet synchronous motors deliver 88 kilowatts — without the losses associated with the hot, noisy internal combustion process. In a country where it’s a long way between stops, the Ioniq’s 200 kilometre range is the key to its acceptance — you can’t carry voltage in a jerrycan, after all.

Think of the distance between Christchurch and Kaikoura on one charge, costing far, far less than a tank of gasoline. The nature of electric power means that this small car also packs in close to 300 newton metres of torque. To say that it’s quick off the mark is an understatement. The best part — it looks like a real car, not a concept vision spaceship. You can save the planet and still enjoy

the comfort and traditional controls, ride and feel of a fun, peppy little small sedan. All without the fuel bill. No wonder, then, that the Ioniq is in high demand for test drives. Book in when you can and see what the future of driving will feel like — Ioniq buyers may not count as truly early adopters, but then again, it’s better to surf the wave of change than to either have it break over you or miss it altogether!

BUSINESS PROFILE

Helping protect riders

Quadbar is an invention created to help protect quad bike riders from injury in rollover accidents. Stuart Davidson brought the product to New Zealand, where it is made locally in Silverdale. The device was designed by David Robertson of Australia who is both a farmer and engineer. “Quad bike accidents have caused more than 17,000 injuries and claimed many lives in the last decade, mostly in the farming community, prompting the invention of the Quadbar safety bar,” says Stuart. “I own a small block of land and am all too aware of injuries and deaths from accidents, having had close calls myself. When I saw the Quadbar, it was obvious that it would save riders from some of the rollover injuries I know about. Research has identified injury and death caused by pinning the rider to be of particular concern and injuries from quad bike backflips are also common. “I have more than 30 years running a successful manufacturing business and am passionate about the difference a Quadbar can make to people’s safety.” Designed to reduce the risk of injury caused by rollovers, this unobtrusive hairpin shaped hoop is mounted on the quad bike, behind the rider —

countering some of the risks associated with accidents. “The bar acts as a passive rollover protective structure (PROPS) as opposed to the more commonly known rollover protective structures (ROPS). Where a typical ROPS would require a full cage and driver restraint, these are not feasible on a rider-active vehicle such as a quad bike.” The Quadbar is mounted on the tow bar and is telescopically adjustable at the base, with a support mount attached to the rear rack allowing the suspension to move freely. The use of the tow bar is not affected by the attachment. The company has received a range of comments from New Zealand farmers. York said: “I have rolled a quad bike twice on flat ground and if I hadn’t had a roll bar fitted, I wouldn’t be here now. Roll bars stop your body from being crushed and most deaths are caused by crushing.” For more information call Stuart on 021 182 8115 or visit quadbar.co.nz. Quadbar will be at site 204b at the Northland Field Days.

Joint ventures define the new normal by Andy Bryenton

In the old days, when one wished to design a motor car, it was a simple exercise of getting out a pen and drawing its curves and lines, like Mr Lyons did with the classic Jaguar shape. ANCAP was something you wore on your head, health and safety meant not letting kids play with the welding torch, and the ‘development budget’ consisted of what the engineering staff wanted for lunch that day. Bits often came from existing or deceased models, lifted verbatim, like the Morris Marina’s door handles landing on the Lotus Esprit. Nowadays, the design budget for one exquisite brushed aluminium switch in the cockpit of a Pagani supercar is more than what flat-pack furniture designers spend on their whole catalogue. Building a new car is costly, ringed about with razor edged red tape, and, outside of the resolutely beige zone of things people absolutely need — like white vans, sensible five door hatchbacks and such — it’s risky to develop anything fresh. The new trend is to find something which works, and make something that looks the same except for your company’s trademark grille. Reference the awful looking Cayenne or Bentley’s big SUV effort. So, when it’s time to step outside the square, companies are beginning to pool their resources. Toyota and arch rivals Subaru joined up to give us the 86 and the BRZ — twins separated

only by a tweak of the fascia, apparent long shots, which hit in a big way. Toyota didn’t know if the world wanted another Hachi-Roku or MR2. Subaru didn’t know if their boxer engine would go well in a tiny sports car. But we did and it did and the results are ongoing. Mazda teamed up with Fiat to make the new MX5. It seems on the surface perfect — let the Italians design the car, let the Japanese engineer it so it never breaks down. Behind that glib assertion it was and is a lovely little roadster, times two. Recently Mercedes have released their own ute, the X-Class, with a chassis shared with the Nissan Navara, a Renault derived engine, and everything

else thoroughly German. And then we come to the ultimate crossover of corporate partners — Toyota and BMW have joined up to create both the new Supra — we assume that will be the name of the enigmatic super coupe when it arrives in 2019 — and the BMW Z4’s latest offering. By pooling their resources to create these niche vehicles — and yes, a ute is niche for Mercedes, just as a luxury convertible is not the bread and butter of BMW’s sales, all the companies involved can justify playing it a little less safe. That means they can go outside the norm, which, to be honest, is where the next big thing is always coming from.

ADVERTORIAL

Maximise battery performance “Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated, and sulphation kills batteries,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. “Every field day we do, we have farmers with batteries well over 10 to 12 years old and still going.” Maximise battery performance with RECHARGE battery additive/ Conditioner. After almost 20 years selling RECHARGE in NZ the ex-Te Kuiti Farmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait until they die and try and resurrect the dead because sulphation damages the lead plates — the earlier you treat them, the less damage is done, and the longer batteries will go.” According to Gerard, lead acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up and a RECHARGE treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate buildup turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons, reaciding the battery. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation process, one chemical reaction to counter another, maximising battery charge holding capacity and preventing premature battery failure. The key is to get in early before the damage has been done,” he says. “Treat them early, repeat this every two years and keep them charged — it is so simple. Remember — don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect

the dead because after the plates have been damaged, it is too late.” The 500ml farmer pack is most popular and treats 10 x N-70 tractor batteries. A more cost effective 2-litre commercial pack is also available and can be purchased online at www. recharge.net.nz. “The 2-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries so about $7 to treat an N-70 and as much as double its life expectancy, and keep it running at full capacity by dissolving the lead sulphate build-up back into sulphuric acid holding electrons. “Yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell treating and resealing it with Sikaflex or a plastic bung. Gerard and Debbie from Recharge Battery Additive “Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like fork recharge.net.nz for more information. hoists, golf carts, scissor hoists and Gerard and Debbie will be at the stand-alone power system batteries.” Northland Field Days again this year Email gerard@recharge.net.nz or visit on site 135-B as usual.

Sisters win photography competition

by Denise Gunn

A dairy farming couple’s two daughters are among the winners in the annual IHC Calf and Rural Scheme photo competition. It was the first photo competition the girls, Anne Barrow,14, and Maria Barrow,12, of south Dannevirke had entered. The IHC Calf and Rural Scheme introduced the competition in 2013. Prior to this, a colouring competition was held which Anne had also won previously. After reading about the photo competition in an IHC newsletter, Anne and Maria decided to enter. Using their family’s camera, a Canon PowerShot 2006 SX170 IS, the sisters took several photos around the farm and with pet calves before deciding which photos to send in. The girls’ mother Diane said all her children got on board taking photos and were competing with each other. The competition criteria covered photos of pledged calves, other calves, farming scenes, rural scenes and anything particularly ‘New Zealand’. Photos with people could be included if permission had been given by those photographed. Diane said her family found out that Anne and Maria were competition winners by email. “I was out at the time and when I got home was told to check the computer. They were dancing and bouncing around with excitement.” Winning the competition has encouraged the sisters
