From shooting to sheep racing on show

Once again, the Northland Field Days team has pulled out all the stops to provide an extensive range of activities and entertainment for show-goers. Among other events, 4WD trials, shooting, sheep racing and, of course good old-fashioned sheep shearing, will be on the cards. “There will be plenty for people to do see and experience at this year’s Northland Field Days from February 26 to 28 in Dargaville,” says president Lew Duggan. Four-wheel-drive adventures Northland Toyota will be building a 4WD track next to their site for the first time, making it possible for anybody interested in getting a Toyota 4WD to take the opportunity to experience it in some real world conditions. Northland Toyota sales consultant Nigel Gilmour says people trying out a new model Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser or Rav4 on the 4WD course should expect to be put through their paces. The company has introduced the track to reaffirm the Toyota Hilux position as a workhorse, says Nigel, “by giving visitors the opportunity to try out the truck in conditions it is likely to experience on a daily basis.”

Shooting skills Hunters and target shooters can show off their sharpshooting skills throughout the show according to organisers at the laser digital claybird shooting event. See how the latest technology can tune up shooting skills in a fairground environment — without actually ‘firing’ a shot. On the sheep’s back Friday and Saturday will see the return of the Sheep ’n’ Show event, a combination of sheep racing and sheep shearing. Previously appearing at the America’s Cup Village, the Royal Easter Show and the Aotea Centre, the Sheep and Show team hosts the ‘grand national sheeplechase’ complete with prizes. Contests for all Watch the top sheep dog triallists in Northland face off against each other to find out who is the best in the region. With competitions being run since 2008 the Field Days continuously attracts Northland’s top dogs and shepherds in fierce competition. continued on page 33 …

ike and Ellen Bennett manage it all. At their Whangaruru based business — ‘The Farm’ — they combine inclusive downto earth hospitality and keep open communication with both staff and guests. They also remain open to new ideas and approaches. One of The Farm’s key roles is introducing young people to the outdoors towards building confidence and skills, while visitors both Kiwi and International sample Northland farm life in an exceptional coastal environment. Mike was a Bay of Islands vet and sharemilker when he met Ellen, a young horsewoman from Arizona with a backpackers and riding school on a farm near Russell. The pair wanted to go dairying and bought the property at Tutaematai, Whangaruru twenty years ago. The family is seven children. The

Ellen and Mike Bennett earth from the farm. More cabins are going up in the Adobe method under the hands of volunteers Richie and Priscilla. “I‘ve a big interest in affordable housing for Northlanders,” says Mike. Across the road the 210 crossbreed cows are milked once a day. Forest, wetlands and estuary mean that around half the property supports the dairying. Farm manager Craig has been recently supplemented by 50/50 sharemilkers Wally and Diane Tribble, “We found we couldn’t put equal focus into both the accommodation side and the farm at the same time. Production had been dropping due to a lack of input,” says Mike. “We’re putting back into the farm now, with more fertiliser and supplying extra feed. And bringing Wally on allows us to get more onto the fencing, for example.” Together with Daniel Hoskins, neighbour and fellow dirt biker, the Bennetts have a creative solution to separating bikes from cows — riparian

fencing allows room for bike tracks between creeks and fences. The Tribbles are experienced share milkers. Wally became aware of the Bennetts’ work with youth. “They’re doing good stuff and we like that we’re a part of it.” The Farm’s school and holiday programmes are ongoing and subscribed by schools throughout Northland and two years ago Mike and Ellen ran a Youth Guarantee Ag/Hort course with North Tec for At Risk youth. “Off road bikes are our main difference,” Mike says. “They engage the kids.” He has bikes for all riders and a set up workshop. Ellen’s domain is the horsemanship classes, horse training and trekking. Every day and every camp or programme varies — from bikes and horses to milking cows, feeding pigs and calves, kayaking, sailing and rafting. The Bennetts’ effective and popular mix of activities ensures successful farm diversification.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

TWO CENTURIES

OF NORTHLAND

DAIRY by Andy Bryenton

Christmas day 1814 is remembered by many New Zealand Christians as the day when the great missionary preacher, Reverend Samuel Marsden, came ashore in the Bay of Islands to conduct a service and present a sermon to local Maori of the Ngapuhi tribe.

B

ut something else was also afoot as the brig ‘Active’ dropped anchor in the waters off Oihi bay, in the shadow of Rangihoua Pa. Not only was Marsden accompanied by a contingent of powerful Maori leaders (including the formidable Hongi Hika) who had witnessed European farming techniques on a journey to Australia — he also brought with him two cows and a bull, with the express purpose of establishing a dairy farm for his planned mission station.

KD

Marsden was considered almost dangerously progressive were shorthorns, a gift from the governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie. Macquarie was of the opinion that New Zealand would be a perfect home

for such beasts, and, as history has shown, he was certainly correct. Samuel Marsden and his followers established a settlement, where they undertook New Zealand’s first dairy operation, 200 years ago. Two cows and a bull soon became a small herd, and while the mission itself was beset by trials of faith (missionary Thomas Kendall, for example, divorced his wife to be with the daughter of a local Tohunga, and was almost converted to traditional Maori spiritual beliefs for a time), the rich

The Maori ambassadors were amazed by the sheer productivity of European farming techniques. ‘They tell me when they return, they shall sit up whole nights, telling their People what they have seen, and that their men will stop their Ears with their Fingers — We have heard enough, they will say, of your incredible Accounts, and we will hear no more — they are impossible to be true,’ said Marsden at the time. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES February 2015

A shorthorn bull, from the same bloodline Samuel Marsden introduced to New Zealand in 1814

soil of Northland proved fertile ground for farming. A more permanent model farming community was eventually established at Te Waimate, and provided not just vital supplies for the growing mission station network, but also a place to teach both settlers (many of whom were ex-convicts from Australia) and Maori alike the practices of modern farming. These included rope making, brick making, paper making, even reading and writing. Marsden was considered almost dangerously progressive in many ways, especially by stauch British Empire colonialists who saw the role of all ‘native peoples’ as less important. The breed of cattle chosen by Governor Macquarie was crucial to the success of the fledgling mission farm. Shorthorn cattle trace their ancestry back roughly two centuries, and at the time when Marsden was about to set off on his voyage they were popular in Australia for their dual role as both beef and dairy animals. The Shorthorn breed arose in the Tees Valley area of northeast England and went on to be further stratified into two distinct variants by British breeders. However, the two cows and one bull loaded onto the ‘Active’ for the trip across the Tasman were of the older, multi-purpose variety, able to provide ample milk for cheesemaking and for drinking, as well as ensuring a strong bloodline with healthy calves. By 1842 the shorthorn was well established across the north and still survives today as a distinct breed, with a very active New Zealand Shorthorn Association promoting the virtues of this legendarily good-natured and hardy variety of cattle. Marsden himself came from a rural background, the son of a blacksmith, who was apprenticed to his father before heeding the call of faith and entering service as an Anglican minister.

7

Marsden’s fellow missionary Thomas Kendall, depicted as an ambassador to the Maori people

His upbringing in rural Yorkshire gave him a firm understanding of what it took to work the land, and were it not for a scholarship he won to attend a religious academy, he may very well have lived out his days as a farmer and smith in the small town of Farsley, north England. This farming knowledge stood him in good stead when he came to New Zealand — giving him an edge that other, more clerical and less ‘dirt under the fingernails’ missionaries lacked. Samuel Marsden’s mission may have been a spiritual one, but he was canny enough in secular matters. As a former magistrate, land owner and farmer’s son he knew that the only way to see the colony in the Bay of Islands thrive was to provide a ready supply of good, wholesome food. In

a time when most introduced food — what the Ngapuhi called ‘kai pakeha’ — was sourced at great expense from Sydney, Marsden’s forays into farming showed both settlers and Maori alike that the fertile soil of the north could

be managed to provide a bounty of oldworld crops and livestock. He is even recorded as the first man to plant grape vines in New Zealand, establishing our now-thriving viticulture trade.

John Coleman says he and wife Lily started their Charolais stud because it was ‘something different’.

ast forward several decades and Coleman Farms and RJC Stud now run together as one unit after son Richard, and partner Hinari, bought into the business in 2006. “We started from nothing, went sharefarming in the King Country, moved north and survived Rogernomics. “At the time, young people were being encouraged to move north and the price of land was an influencing factor.

Some of our new neighbours however, reckoned that whoever bought our piece of land would wind up broke and yet 50 years on, we’re still here. “We were milking cows when we first moved to Kaikohe and initially, the focus was on having our own piece of land. However, once we got on top of the overdraft and mortgage we could start looking further afield, so we bought extra blocks and went into dry stock.”

Milking was never entirely forgotten though and John still milks several cows in the herringbone shed and rears calves. “Rogernomics and changes to the industry meant that a lot of small suppliers disappeared, which was also a motivating factor for us to diversify into dry stock. We took advantage of the first Charolais semen that was imported into New Zealand and decided to give it a go.” Coleman Farms registered its first halfbred Charolais heifers in 1970, using imported semen over Friesian cows, and continued upgrading until 1987. After five generations, the Coleman cattle were recognised as purebred. “We’ve had success over the years with our crossbred cattle in carcass competitions and success in the show ring with our purebred cattle and over

February 26, with Alistair calling it a truly collaborative experience for everyone involved. He floated the idea with the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club at the end of the 2014 Field Days at a wrapup barbecue, where it was strongly welcomed by all members. Alistair and the club patron, Bruce Galloway, then approached the Northland Field Days committee about the potential of hosting a careers open day at their 2015 event, quoting a similar careers day held at Auckland’s Museum Of Transport and Technology last year, which Alistair says was extremely successful. “Thirty one eager students turned up who were so keen they ignored several rain showers to carry on with activities.” Northland Field Days’ president, Lew Duggan, says the committee jumped in almost immediately, as it felt the day would be an excellent way to get Northland’s youth involved in some of the region’s fastest growing industries. “We offer Nor thland’s youth scholarships to study agriculture, therefore the ‘Youth Into Industry’ initiative was a perfect fit for us,” he said. “We are really looking forward to seeing some of the area’s brightest students at the Northland Field Days learning about New Zealand’s most exciting and essential industries.” The Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club won’t only offer space but club members will assist as tutors as well as being involved in various other supportive roles. Students will learn lessons in eight categories including Health and Safety compliance, workplace safety awareness, weights and measures, vehicle safety compliances as well as operating mini excavators, and small plant and equipment. Alistair says each categor y consists of two activities with industry representatives sharing their knowledge about their specific areas of expertise and helping students complete associated paperwork.

New AgBrand products business owners Hamish and Felicity Melville have relocated the company back to its pioneering days’ location. “Last September when we purchased the company which was established in 1993, we immediately relocated it from Auckland back to Napier just 50 metres from the original birthplace of the AgBrand products,” said Hamish. “We personally manufacture our stock feeders from our engineering workshop in Hawke’s Bay, ensuring the ability to provide continuity of supply and maintain exacting standards.” Coming from a farming background they understand the needs of sturdy, minimal wastage and low cost efficient feeding systems. The systems are designed by farmers for farmers. They are strong and durable — designed and produced in New Zealand by their own engineers. “We explain and identify with our clients the right product for each stock feeding situation. Investing in our feeders means less feed wastage, increased stock growth, less time spent on labour during feeding out and all these factors help to improve your profits,” said Hamish. “We are excited to be able to make farmers more aware of the range and availability of our products at the

Northland Field Days. A range of feeders, both moveable, and the various shapes we produce along with other accessories will be on display. Our products have been the same for more than 20 years. The company and it’s personnel have a commitment to provide quality products

enny and Hal are the fourth generation caring for their family farm named Aoroa, overlooking the Northern Wairoa River. Originally growing kumara and squash they decided to rest the soil and make the change to biological dairy farming 11 years ago. “After years of cropping we realised the soil was no longer healthy and more chemical fertiliser wasn’t going to be good for the land or crops, so after much research we changed to biological dairy farming to keep the land sustainable for future generations. The chemical way wasn’t going to work any longer,” said Penny. Smart. “It was a big move. Bio farming means we use as few chemicals as possible. The soil needed to be replenished with nutrients so step one was repairing

and balancing the soil as this gives you better grass, allowing the cows to eat better — meaning they are healthier, the milk is better and therefore it is better for people. Good bioactivity in the soil helps make it a success. “Our herd numbers 850 Friesian Jersey cross and we split calve which means we calve both in April and July, because this suits both grass growth and infrastructure. Predominantly we use homeopathy for cows pre and post calving as this helps keep them happy and healthy.” Penny’s farming ability developed more when she and Hal started their family, and her role changed to maintain the bull beef side of things which was another part of the farm. This led her to pursue a diploma in agri business. “I was always interested in the business

Penny enjoys all aspects of farming life side of things and then after completing the diploma I participated in the Agri Womens Development Trust leadership course which gives women the skills to lead in the farming industry. As part of the course I had to interview a Fonterra Director. Out of that interview I was encouraged to stand for the Fonterra shareholders’ council. I was elected and now my time is split between the farm and other commitments such as council, the Northland Dairy Development Trust and the Kaipara Hospice trust which I am also involved in. “Part of our responsibility on the shareholders’ council is representing and monitoring the board. I go out and talk to farmers, encouraging them to talk about their thoughts on Fonterra initiatives such as the My Milk option which is equity partnership or any other issues the farmer would like to raise. We encourage farmers to engage with what we are doing because the more we

hear the more influence we will have. I am also very aware of farmer health, both physical and mental. “There is a lot of health support available. With the use of technology, farming today is becoming less physical so it is very important to be fit both mentally and physically. We need to make sure the message is getting out there.” Dairy Women’s Network and Agri Women’s Development Trust are also part of Penny’s portfolio. On developing women’s leadership potential Penny says: “A lot is confidence. You realise the role of networking, you learn to strengthen your personality and you get support from each other. At my age you want to give back to the community and help others.” Penny is also a member of the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group which is involved in restoring the Kaipara harbour environment.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

New Year, new markets, new thinking

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

Volatility in the market is making it tough for everyone but at least we are not living in a warzone and we will make it through once again. This volatility is teaching us a better way, making us more resilient, more conservative plus strengthening our business skills. As food producers, New Zealand is in a good market. People need food, and our soils, climate and isolation are strong factors for us to operate from. I have been down the natural track for 30 years now and over the past ten years I

have recognised an increasing demand for food produced in a safe, certified, nutritiously dense manner as people all over the globe become more concerned about their health and what they are eating. This is the new market and it is a market that will continue to grow. To produce food to qualify for this market is simple. It’s all about changing the soil — change the soil and you change the

quality of the food — it is that simple. The change to remineralise our soils and protect our environment is already here. Agrissentials’ focus is on the soil. Get the soil right and all life above the soil, plants, animals and people will be right. Agrissentials’ live, living multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers are designed to bring health and vitality back to soils and back to the environment. With the new consumer markets out there crying out for safe, certified nutritiously dense food produced in an eco-friendly and sustainable way, New Zealand is ideally positioned to take a strong lead in producing top quality food for this growing demand. We have the soil, the climate, the water and the people to do it and we are renowned for our agriculture and horticulture. Before chemicals got a grip on our production methods we were world leaders in economic food production, innovation and enterprise. Today’s chemical methods have tied us into the commodity markets where we are competing against other big commodity suppliers. I believe that it is time to change our methods of production by working with nature —

increasing the depth, microbial life and mineral content of the top soil. This in turn will increase soil carbon, soil water retention, and soil drainage capacity, increasing production and producing better quality food. Such a move would take us away from the commodity markets and their volatile systems which are unstable, unpredictable and difficult to budget around. When you see the likes of Tatua Dairy paying out $10.30 per milk solid there is definitely strong opportunities in the marketplace for value added quality food. Agrissentials’ certified natural system of soil fertility can open up opportunities to help you produce top quality, certified produce with our multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers designed to bring health and vitality back to the soil. Get the soil right and the rest of the system falls into place. Go on, give us a call and make a change for good. Grid connected solar for home & business With Northland power prices increasing on average by 6% per year a $250 monthly power bill today could mean you’ll pay more than $110,000 for your power over the next 20 years. The good news is, there is an alternative. When Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau expanded into the Solar Energy market local Kaitaia businessman, Eric Shackleton, was early to recognize the value of generating his own power at his Ahipara vineyard. The 5kW Grid Connected system has been designed with in-built monitoring, so both Eric and Healthy Homes can check at any time to see how much power is being generated. His best day’s generation to date, was on January 1, producing 36.9kWh. (A normal New Zealand household will use 22kW of electricity per day).

In the seven months to the end of January the system had produced 4,336kWh with 61% used on site, and Eric expects this to go up significantly over summer. “The longer sunshine hours of summer are great for covering the power used by our vineyard watering. It’s a great match when your power load can be scheduled during the day.” Craig Palatchie, Operations Manager for Healthy Homes, recommends on-line monitoring for all Grid Connect systems and also using Enphase micro inverters

so that smaller systems, like the Start Up Pack can be added to later as needs change or finances permit. “It’s a great way to build up a system to best match your power needs.” With a Grid Connected system you stay connected to your power company while trying to make and use as much of your own power as possible during sunshine hours. Any surplus you make can go back to the power company,

with most paying a small fee of 07– 10c/kWh. However, when you use your own power you are saving full price (35–45c/kWh) so it makes sense to design a system matching generation with consumption. Knowing that you have prepaid most of your power for the next 25–30 years is a great feeling! Investing in solar today will get you saving straight away.

It was a case of booking aboard Singapore Airlines from Auckland, in the winter months when sunny skies in Europe were a better prospect than winter chills at home. The giant A380 would have flabbergasted my own grandfather, who fortunately returned from the fighting in France, and we dined well, were entertained with myriad channels, and sped on after a brief transit in Singapore to collect a rental car from Renault Euro Drive at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. The soft tones of ‘Charlotte’ as we christened the husky voice of our onboard GPS device, made finding our way to northern France a breeze. That afternoon we were in Le Quesnoy, liberated from occupying German troops by New Zealanders on November 4, 1918. And it was raining! The town is a mediaeval walled city,

A century since Gallipoli is a time of remembrance for tens of thousands of New Zealanders and memories abounded on a recent trip to France.

Le Quesnoy. Central parking is easy in the cobbled town square albeit with modern road openings. We found a parking space in the central cobbled square, and set about exploring. The first sign of Kiwi provenance came with the street named ‘Rue de Helen Clarke,’ commemorating a visit by the former PM. Back in the first great war the 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade surrounded the town, to keep the German occupiers contained. What followed was one of the Kiwi troops most spectacular exploits of the war. They scaled the ramparts at night and took on the Germans. Surprise was complete and the defenders quickly surrendered. The townspeople were overjoyed and Le Quesnoy has forged strong links New Zealand. The town has one of four New Zealand battlefield memorials on the Western Front. The others are at Graventafel and Mesen/

Messines in Belgium, and Longueval in France. On our visit, we made our way to the information centre on the town’s eastern side. As luck would have it, it was closed for a holiday so we fell back on advice from some friendly locals. (A note here for travellers following in our footsteps to check the French holiday calendar.) In the nearby Jardin du Souvenir, or Garden of Remembrance, reached easily through a (rather dilapidated) short tunnel in the ramparts is the New Zealand battlefield memorial. Set into the rampart, above a now empty moat, is a relief carving showing soldiers scaling the walls. On our visit, it was enlightening to see a class of French schoolchildren listening to their teacher’s hands-on history lesson.

17

On their tour of France in 2000, the All Blacks visited Le Quesnoy and they led a parade to the memorial where wreaths were laid. On a more sombre note, to the north of the town is Le Quesnoy Cemetery. Most of the 50 New Zealanders buried here lost their lives on November 4, 1918, just one week before the armistice. Perhaps though, the most abiding memory of Le Quesnoy was the friendly handshake in a local cafe from a passing townsman, who simply said, “Nouvelle Zealadais? Tres bon, tres bon,” before continuing on his way. Paris can be convenientlyreached by Singapore Airlines, leaving Auckland at 1.30pm, and after a two to three hour layover in Singapore, you are disembarking in Paris at 7.10am in the morning, with a full day to find your way onwards.

Meat industry in ‘serious decline’

19

by Paul Campbell

“We’re talking about New Zealand’s second biggest export industry, and it’s in serious decline.” This statement from Meat Industry Excellence chairman John McCarthy underlined his call for improved corporate governance at the country’s meat co-operatives. He has cited the case where the Silver Fern Farms chairman, one of the farmer-elected directors up for reelection, effectively endorsed another of the three candidates by calling for no change on the board. “This is entirely inappropriate for a co-operative chairman, especially one up for re-election himself who is one of three candidates in the electoral process,” said Mr McCarthy. “We saw it during the Alliance elections, and this is further evidence of the need to improve governance standards at our co-ops,” he said. “It’s the principle at stake. It is up to farmers to decide whom they elect as governors of their co-op.” Mr McCarthy said that farmers were further frustrated at the poor levels of transparency and accountability exhibited by their co-ops. Many meat farmers felt cheated by what could now be interpreted as a lack of honesty at last year’s co-op company farmer meetings. “The promises are turning to dust, like our pastures. The $100-plus per lamb of last year was an aberration and we’re back to worse than a year ago. The situation is much worse when one takes into account our currency slide against the $US. ”He said farmers felt cheated by the pictures painted by Alliance and Silver Fern Farms when they held their meetings with farmers late last year. “Schedules are falling again, and the co-ops are leading the way. They are stretching farmer loyalty to the limit. “Compounding this is that during the last few years the poor practices of the SFF board have eroded shareholder value and they are effectively selling the family silver to stay afloat, meanwhile heralding this performance as good governance and asking farmers to support more of the same. “Farmers are telling me they feel that they weren’t told the truth when the co-op companies should have known what was coming down the track.

NZ’s Best Greenhouses Quality, New Zealand made Greenhouses, Glasshouses Shade Houses & Accessories

“While they were busy telling us how things were looking up, it appears they were planning new year price cuts, and downward revisions of schedules,” said Mr McCarthy. “On top of climatic challenges, this is putting farmers under real stress.” He added that farmers deserved better in terms of co-operative governance, and needed to exercise their votes carefully. “The status quo is not delivering. Shareholders ought not to be being directed by a co-op chairman who is himself in the electoral race. And they ought to be able to expect greater transparency and accountability around results and business outlook. We’re talking about New Zealand’s second biggest export industry, and it’s in serious decline, and a big part of this is due to poor governance at our co-ops.”

The good oil for farmers It is a cliché perhaps that every cloud has a silver lining, but it is certainly an apt one at the present, when we have seen the gloom over the downturn in milk prices on the international market being somewhat compensated for by the upswing in beef and wool. Then too, the farming sector can take heart from another vital commodity cost. The plunging price of fuel means there will be some valuable savings on the farm, even though there is also the spectre of summer drought crowding over the financial horizon. Petrol and diesel prices at the pump have dropped by more than 40 cents a litre since October and when you give it a little thought, that is a ‘priceless’ figure for the man making a living on the land. It means savings across the board — on the operation of farm machinery

and equipment as well as in transport costs off the farm — even for the long drive into town for supplies. It is to be hoped that the cheaper fuel prices also translate into the cost of getting goods to market — road transport, loading and shipping should all benefit from cheaper fuel costs. It may well be early days, but with predictions that the market glut which has caused the drop may well continue for some time, it must filter down for the benefit of production costs everywhere. Another area where we should expect

to see some good on farm savings will be in fertiliser application. Cheaper fert as well as chemicals and the cost of application should also come home to stabilise the rural bank balance. My views are certainly being underlined elsewhere. For instance, the Bank of New Zealand senior economist Doug Steel is expecting a fall in the consumer price index in the next two quarters and a “whiff of deflation” in New Zealand because of the fuel price plunge. He says: “We’re seeing some of that sentiment filter into interest rate markets with quite low interest rates, from even already low levels.” “I guess from a New Zealand perspective we are net oil importers,

so a lower price is a positive in the sense that it’s lowering the cost of the economy.” Ken Shirley, the chief executive of Road Transport Forum New Zealand, also reckons we farmers, as well as other industries, should see the benefits. Carriers have fuel adjustment factors built into their contracts and any savings are passed on to customers. “As long you have a competitive market, then suppliers of all goods and services are looking to compete and they take the opportunity wherever they see a cost reduction to pass that on,” he said. The Treasur y’s director of macroeconomic policy, Tim Ng says that overall, it’s probably positive — if you’ve got a lower oil price, that’s an input into production that’s imported, so you’re reducing the cost structure of the economy when oil prices fall.” In closing this column, let me put the whole thing into something that graphically illustrates the savings that are to be made — the price of benchmark Brent crude oil has fallen by more than half since mid2014 and is now at its lowest in five-and-a-half-years. And that is simply very good news down on the farm!

Choosing the right pumps and filters Have you ever been confused when buying pumps and filter systems by all the jargon, too afraid to ask, or have no idea what you just parted with a lot of money for? It isn’t just a case of one size fits all. Like any mechanical or technical product there are a few terms and calculations needed. But understanding what you are buying shouldn’t require you to have a degree in engineering! Keeping it simple — what pressure do you need at the tap so you don’t need to run around in the shower to get wet? Generally pressure is expressed in metres head. Distances from source to tank, to pump, and to tap outlet are needed to calculate this. Anther term, friction loss is the pressure lost as the water travels through the pipe, so you need to know elevation and pipe size. Flow, measured in litres per minute, is

how many taps are likely to operate at once. Some simple calculations give you duty performance. Pumps have maximum and duty performances. On a pump curve chart, duty performance is mid curve and this is where you want your pump performing. Often maximum performance is quoted exaggerating the pump’s ability so the pump is oversold and under-delivers. A pump will not operate at the maximum for long without damage. There are many inexpensive water filters and you should buy NSF grade filters and housings which are internationally tested for use with drinking

water. Non NSF filters may leach chemicals into your water, do little actual filtration, and can disintegrate as water passes through and you are ingesting freshly introduced contaminants! Filter housings should also be BPA Free ensuring the plastic is high quality, will withstand years of use,

and not leach nasty chemicals into your water. In most cases, you should be able to maintain and clean your filter system yourself and change consumables as easily as doing the dishes! No need to use chemicals or enter costly service contracts.

Garden sheds to conservatories by Ann Morgan

“Like a miniature house our new curved roof building is similar to a shepherd’s hut,” says BetterShedz owners Brett Lewisham and Alistair Hargrove. Bettershedz specialize in buildings up to 10m2 in floor area, ranging from ride on mower sheds, sleep outs, home office’s and summer houses. A building consent is not required for sheds up to 10m2 in floor area. “We make into reality what the customer dreams of in a shed. No matter what the customer requires of a small building, we can build it to their specifications,” says Brett “It takes time to get a product right and in the last four years we have focused on developing a range of sheds built to a high standard,” As a builder Brett could not resist the

opportunity to use his skills, designing and building solid, well constructed garden sheds after seeing a gap in the market. The company moved from their original premises in September 2013 to the corner of Puketona Junction and SH10 Kerikeri. They will display a variety of their buildings at their Northland Field Days site, number 264. “Field days are a great opportunity to come and view the shed range and dream a little. The new curved roof shed and our new Cedar clad Summer House will be part of our Field days range for people to evaluate.”

Simple and strong

“Simple, strong and effective with very few moving parts and excellent results” is the word from Lance Keay of Lance Keay Contracting Ltd who operates an agricultural contracting business out of Taipuha in Northland. “I’d been looking around for about 12 months at various seed drills and three years ago I settled for a Taege 3.0m double box”. It was good to have Taege Engineering up at the Northland Field Days as it gave Lance a chance

Northland Field Days

to see one close up. “I chose a Taege because it looked like a well thought out machine that was simple to operate and user friendly with low maintenance” says Lance. In seeing the Taege working in a very good demonstration by Trevor

of Taege Engineering Lance found that the fine tips cut through the kaikuyu and generated good tilth therefore producing a great seed bed. The flexible tynes allowed the tips to stay in the ground at the right depth over a greater variation of terrain and now that he has been contracting with it for three years Lance is able to state that “the results are excellent, excellent, yeah

really great results”. I take it from that response that Lance is more than happy with the fact that his customers can reap the benefits of his well educated decision to purchase a Taege. “I’m a man of few words” say’s Lance so when he speaks he’s worth listening to. You too can see a range of Taege products at this year’s Northland Field Days site 74.

with Fred Hoekstra

Do you have any BDD in your herd? You may have heard of Bovine Digital Dermatitis and how it is a major problem overseas. You also may have heard that we now have BDD in New Zealand. Unfortunately, that is true. We have certainly seen an increase of BDD in the last six years or so. Most of it, thus far, seems to occur in the North Island and in Southland. There are still a lot of unknowns about the disease, but we do know that we need to minimise or eliminate it if we can. Over in Europe, and especially in the United Kingdom it is a significant problem causing a large percentage of herd lameness. The picture shows what the disease looks like in a non-contagious stage, however there are different stages to the disease. At this stage the treponemen (bacteria) are deep in the skin where disinfectant can’t get to it from the outside and antibiotics can’t get to it from the inside, which in itself is not a problem until it reappears. This reappearance is a different stage. There are four different stages to the disease,

with another stage that is made up of two of these stages together, which makes it five stages in all. I can’t do justice to this problem in a short article, so please feel free to call me if you want to know more about BDD. What I do want to mention in this article though, are a couple of things that you should do when you do find it in your herd. • Check the rest of the herd as soon as possible by having a designated person look for it very closely at

milking time. You need to clean the skin in that area of the foot and each case you find needs to be individually treated with Tetra-Vet. • Possibly use a foot bath as a preventative. This can also be done with a back-pack sprayer and using some product that is specially made for it. You can use formalin if you have a foot bath installed, but formalin is quite aggressive and is not conducive to staff well-being. • You could also consider culling the cow that has the disease. Once a cow has contracted BDD, she will not get rid of it even if the foot looks perfectly healthy. The treponemes remain in the skin and this cow becomes a threat to the rest of your herd. This would essentially work if you only have one or two cases on the farm. However, if you have larger numbers then it would be too late anyway, and

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

culling the diseased cows may only be the tip of the iceberg. The disease is mainly spread through manure and transporting animals. • This in itself is quite a challenge in NZ as most young stock are taken off-farm and farmers who are buying in animals are more vulnerable as well. If you have any questions or would like a brochure with full information on the disease, please give us a call on 0800 833 463, as this is a disease that needs to be taken seriously!

Anaerobic bacteria cause pond crusting

We now know that the culprits of that crust have been living happily underneath. Anaerobic bacteria Anaerobic bacteria are microbes that thrive in an atmosphere that is dark and devoid of oxygen. To create ideal conditions, anaerobic bacteria separate the fibres in the effluent then send them to the pond’s surface. As the fibres merge, they form the crust that blocks out sun and oxygen. For farmers, the real fight is with anaerobic bacteria. Here’s the bad news. An effluent pond is dominated by these bacteria. Also, dismantling the crust does not deter them. Remove the crust and the bacteria will simply rebuild their protective roof. A scientific breakthrough has changed everything.

After scientists discovered that anaerobic bacteria were the cause of crusting, beating these bugs became surprisingly simple. Put counteractive bugs into the pond. These corrective micro organisms are called aerobic bacteria. Aerobic bacteria need oxygen and light. Introduce them to a pond and the first thing they do is eat the crust in order to let in more light and oxygen. In weeks the pond is clear of solids giving the farmer a liquefied effluent that easily flows through the nozzle of an irrigator. The effluent also retains its nitrogen and phosphorus in an organic form. Costing a tenth of the price of machine-based techniques, this scientific approach is now common among European farmers. is what farmers say when we show them this photo of an effluent pond.

“You never see the sky reflected in an effluent pond.“ This reaction is understandable. The farmers we talk to are smart, using expensive machines to break and stir and separate the crust. But despite their efforts, they never get results that look anything like the photo we show them. The photo is real and not enhanced in any way. But how is this clear, free-flowing effluent possible? FIGHTING THE WRONG BATTLE: Though farmers battle against pond crust and sludge, these solids are merely symptoms of the real problem. The cause of the crust are microscopic creatures that live below the surface – ANAEROBIC BACTERIA. Anaerobic Bacteria are microbes that thrive in an atmosphere that is dark and

At Site 250 Northland Field Days

devoid of oxygen. To create these conditions, Anaerobic Bacteria send effluent fibers to the pond’s surface to form a crust that blocks the light and oxygen that threaten their existence. To create a clean and clear pond (like the photo), you have to defeat these crust-causing Anaerobic Bacteria. The Browns of Pirongia did that by introducing counteractive bugs into their pond. SLURRY BUGS are Aerobic Bacteria that need light and oxygen. When introduced to an effluent pond, they eat the crust to allow light and oxygen into their environment. Within weeks, the pond is clear of solids, leaving a liquefied effluent that is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus and is easily pumped. THE COST? About 1/10th the cost of a machine-based system. Sound like bullsh*t? It’s not – it’s just better science in action.

Fine lime … fine lime … fine lime Rachel Sorley, Environmental Fertilisers

DairyFlo soft plastic dairy liners and tubing save you time, money, and bother because they last more than twice as long as rubber.

Now’s the time to start thinking about putting your autumn fertiliser on.

They don’t split, perish or deteriorate from milk fat absorption or chemical washing – which means there are no cavities to harbour bacteria, cleaning is easier, and cell count is dramatically reduced. See for yourself at the Field Days why this new liner is changing the game in New Zealand dairy sheds. Northern site 246 Central Districts site E20 Contact us now: 0800 55 33 77 www.dairyflo.co.nz

$30/tonne spreading (approx.) = $900; Total cost Nano Cal plus spreading = $5,550 Plus the fine particle size of Nano Cal makes it available to the plant quickly. We recommend applying Nano Cal every two years to meet the plant’s requirements for calcium. We will be

Do you need to have a soil test done to find out how many nutrients you have used up growing the grass to make the milk? How are your calcium levels? Calcium is required by weight and volume more than any other element. Available calcium determines available energy for the plant. Calcium is the key to good soil structure. Calcium + carbon + water opens up the soil structure to oxygen, improves drainage and increases yields. Environmental Fertilisers have Nano Cal, a fine lime (less than 90 microns) that is also rich in trace minerals (iron, copper, manganese, zinc and boron) and contains sugar to feed your soil biology. At approximately $155 plus GST a tonne landed, and put on at rates of 300kg/ha (equivalent to 2.5 tonnes/ ha of Ag Lime), Nano Cal becomes very affordable. For a 100ha farm consider the following comparison: Ag Lime: 250 tonne x $40/tonne landed (approx.) = $10,000; 250 tonne x $25/tonne spreading (approx.) = $6,250; Total cost Ag Lime plus spreading = $16,250 Nano Cal: 30 tonne x $155/tonne landed (approx.) = $4,650; 30 tonne x

Drying off

What will make us hang up the cups and what makes us keep going? With the hot summer drying out pasture and the low payout, there is not a lot cash around to buy in good-quality supplementary feed. Conversely, both bring extra pressure to continue milking as long as you can to get that last drop and the last dollar. Historically, results from February herd testing have provided a simple way to split the herd into groups based on milk production yield and milk quality. The rule of thumb being — your good

producers in February will still be doing fairly well in March and April and your poor producers in February will be poorer in March and April. The latter quickly becoming uneconomical to keep feeding. More recently, two developments have influenced drying off strategies. Firstly, findings in dairy science highlight the relationship between good body condition pre-calving and future milk production. DairyNZ have clear recommendations on body condition scoring at calving and the length of time required to alter body condition scores in dairy cattle. Advanced ultrasound techniques for pregnancy detection gives farmers a very accurate calving date, estimated in 5-day blocks. Drying off dates become a matter of working back from expected calving date to identify the best drying off dates when the cows are at the ideal condition. Secondly, technologies in dairy automation have fine tuned drying off decision-making. Inline sensors giving individual day-to-day yield information for each cow, can be combined with

a preferential feed system to manage drying off or the extension of the milking season to its best economic benefit. Combined again with an effective weighing system, farmers can identify not only their most bountiful producers but also their cows which convert feed to milk most efficiently, rather than milking it off their back. With MilkHub Walk Over Weighing, farmers can be alerted to incremental weight loss and identify the cows which are beginning to lose condition before there’s any visible change to be seen. Supplying the best milk rather than the greatest quantity, is another consideration. As lactation gets longer the cows start producing less milk and the somatic cell count has a tendency to creep up. Getting rid of your poor performing cows rather than risk grades on a milk volume that is already tapering off is a good idea. So all in all, when debating whether to hang up the cups, it seems farmers should be aiming for the best dollar not the last dollar.

Fighting corrosion the local way by Ayla Miller

A local company is importing military and aviation certified products that will change the way people deal with corrosion. The Whangarei based company, Corrosion Control NZ, owned by four Kiwi shareholders and run by Thomas and Lilly Mullers, aims to save customers’ money whilst being environmentally friendly. “We want to contribute something to the local community,” Thomas says of his motivation to start the business. Two years ago, after speaking with councils, campsites, and those in the agriculture industry, Thomas Muller saw there was high demand for a product that would solve corrosion issues and decided to import CorrosionX products from Texas. “Our product is cheaper and lasts longer than other corrosion products. This combination means customers will save money in the long run.” CorrosionX is NZ Ministry of Primary Industries certified and the company has a number of local applicators. It only recruits staff that have experience with farming, machinery, ports and airports meaning advice can be given to treat particular machines or buildings and most importantly, save them. “CorrosionX is proven to perform on mussel farms, the new Whangarei bridge, Coast Guard boats, Northpower equipment, rental machines, heat pumps,

tractors, fertilisers, cranes and off shore electronics. Our products are used by the Dulux lab in Auckland, Ports of Nelson, the German Army, the RAAF, the US Navy and many more.” The product carries a farm friendly class 11 NZ MPI approval whilst stopping electrolysis and offering extreme longevity and lubrication. It also removes the need to use engine oil or diesel on farm equipment which can damage rubber and end up in waterways. “It is affordable and real simple to apply, even to wet or rusty machines,” Thomas says. He adds that CorrosionX saves water by eliminating the need to constantly hose down machinery. CorrosionX can also be used on concrete to stop lichen growing. New Holland’s new arrival New Holland has completely redesigned and upgraded their popular T4 range, which now features three higher-horsepower premium tractors to replace the existing T4000 and the entry-level models of the T5000 ranges. The four model range, which was conceived with loaders in mind, produces between 84 -114 horsepower and delivers maximum torque of 457 Newton-metres to power through farm chores big and small. “In the competitive livestock and mixed farming segments, farmers are demanding increased levels of operational flexibility and comfort,” says Kyle Baxter, New Holland NZ Operations Manager for C B Norwood Distributors. “That is why we introduced the Dual Command transmission with Creeper (gear) alongside New Holland’s renowned SuperSteer front axle.” This combo puts more precise control in the driver’s hands, even at very slow speeds or when manoeuvering with heavy equipment in tow. In a high-octane world, it’s worth mentioning that some farmers need to move at speeds measured in metres per hour — especially in crop agriculture — and the new T4 range have this sorted. Of course, at the other end of the spectrum, the new 3.4 litre, Common Rail F5C engine, developed in partnership with FPT Industrial has power to spare.

Safety and utility side by side by Andy Bryenton

The humble motor car has come a long way in the last three decades — from the age before seat belts, airbags and ANCAP safety ratings to a machine which offers safety as a paramount priority. Stability control, antilock brakes, side intrusion bars — all point to one overarching fact. On four wheels, safety is king. It’s the same on the farm, as the manufacturers of hard-working off road vehicles strive to make working in tough outdoor conditions as safe as possible. Already a clear leader in the side by side market, Polaris Industries has upped the ante with the release of the unique. This pushes the number of Polaris models with complete rollover protection up to 15, a versatile line-up which spans a wide range of applications and engine sizes. The M1400 is targeted squarely at the light commercial market, boasting two-wheel drive with turf mode, turf tyres, and power provided by a 31HP Pro-Star engine. The capabilities of the M1400 are clear from the figures alone. With a payload of 635kg, towing capacity of 680kg and rear tray capacity of 499kg, this new machine from the people who brought the extremely popular Ranger to the UTV scene won’t shy away from hard work. The M1400 features electronic fuel injection for smooth and responsive power, along with independent front and rear suspension for the trademark smooth Polaris ride and a top speed of 42 km/ph. A well thought out chassis and suspension layout ensures that this kind of grunt can be deployed on just

about any surface nature wants to throw in your path. A unique feature of the M1400 is a spacious flat tray, with a plethora of accessory options available such as an electric tipping bed, a suite of incab accessories and a combo of rear box, side and carrier options. Indeed, Polaris proudly claim the industry’s largest range of accessories, with their proprietary Lock and Ride accessory range able to be attached and detached at a moment’s notice. The M1400 also promises to take the crew further with a fuel capacity of 34.1 litres, whilst its 144cm width, 4.3 metre turning radius and turf mode ensure ease of access to tight spots. “We already have an industryleading range of 15 models with ROPS, however we continue to innovate and develop new models to ensure we can offer solutions to the widest possible range of customers,” says Polaris New Zealand Country Manager, Alan Collins. “The M1400 is a great example of a vehicle that offers tremendous value and versatility to light commercial users. “We have had great success with our Heavy Duty range of product designed for heavy users, and now products such as the M1400 and the Ranger ETX offer so many solutions for light commercial and agricultural or lifestyle applications.”

QUAD BIKE SAFETY Concentrate on the riding. Look where you’re going, not where the stock are going.

Auckland drivers need tyres that work in the traffic, farmers need tyres that just work.

We’re having a Field Day. Or three Come see us at Northland Field Days Site No. 348b Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that are designed for concrete roads. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money.

• Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance. Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it then choose a Mickey Thompson tyre.

Mickey Thompson’s have: Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction if you get punctures, then mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance. The first advantage most drivers mention after replacing the original tyres to Mickey Thompson Tires is the noticeable improvement in handling.

Cranes lift spirits by Ayla Miller

Waimea Trucks and Cranes will make their first appearance at the Northland field days this year with a crane mounted on a demo Ford Ranger ute. Sales representative Jeremy Thomas, knows that with increasingly strict laws enforced in workplaces regarding lifting, small cranes will become more of a necessity. “Many businesses have tightened their lifting rules as more staff require time off due to back problems,” says Jeremy. His customers come from a wide range of industries but beekeepers play a large role. “The field days are a great opportunity for people to come along and see the machine in action,” he says.

Jeremy’s extensive knowledge about cranes means he is able to match the right machine to the job as Waimea Trucks and Cranes offer custom modifications for cranes and specialise in build ups. There will also be package deals available at the field days. “It is a New Zealand owned and operated company and has been running for over 30 years and I think people are supportive of that.” The business began with truck parts and then moved into cranes and lifting equipment.

To Waimea Truck & Crane Ltd Just a quick note to let you know what a difference your Quick Lift Crane has made to my Beekeeping Business. Since purchasing our second Quick Lift Crane with remote operation it has saved me time and money as the crane makes lighter and easier work and requires less staff. It is easy to use, light and compact and trouble free, the crane now allows me to lift pellets of hives onto the truck without any effort in a much shorter time frame than by using manual labour. I certainly would recommend it to any Beekeeper who wants to be more efficient. Kevin Simons – Edgecomb Honey Ltd

Keywords are light and strong “We produce solid, hardworking engineering which has been around for more than 50 years, made for New Zealand conditions, which is priced right, is strong, rugged and very reliable” says Buckton sales manager, Paul Gleeson. It all began when Victor Buckton in 1950 started recycling old trucks and converting them into solid farm machinery. Later when his sons Eric and Morris entered the business they took things up a notch or two establishing a reputation for engineering farm Northern

machinery that was ‘as light as possible, yet as strong as possible’. Word began to spread and they now export from Otorohanga to countries such as Australia, Chile, United States and South Africa. “Our new 3PTL bale feeder will be on display this year and it makes feeding your livestock so much easier. Also on display will be a range of forage wagons, slurry and muck spreaders, pond stirrers and other popular machinery,” Mr Gleeson added. “We have our own transporter and it takes a number of loads to get the field days display ready. The cabins and containers get loaded on to start with and these are basically set up as our offices and over a period of up to 10 days before the field days begin the machinery is delivered load by load. We also utilise some of the product local dealers have for display as this helps save the distance of travel and time. “The farmers are always receptive because they like to support and be

supported by local industry, I really like the regional days as it is a chance to talk directly to the farmers and get to know them on a personal level. It is definitely worth all the hard work to make the days a success. We also have our website up and running which is a big help for

clients as they can log on and view our machinery range and find out what’s new or happening in different areas. “We will be at site 100, next to Norwood Farm Machinery from Whangarei and it is great working closely together with our local distributor.

On top of that, they’re designed to be low maintenance and easy to use. Before long your livestock will be as big & strong as our engineering.

imagined 450cc, liquid cooled Rotax four-stroke providing 38 horsepower. Even the frame has moved past tubular steel, using less bolts and less welds for long-lasting structural rigidity. The suspension has been improved with more travel over the bumps both front and back, and a new double front A-arm system to reduce dive in the corners. As usual, there’s Can Am’s trademark trailing torsional independent system at the back, keeping things smooth and in control. All of which should be no surprise — Can Am, like their rivals in both the United States and Asia, have to innovate and improve to survive the cut and thrust of the ATV world. What is different though, is the price. Visit any Can Am dealership and you will be surprised at the low cost of the new L series of Outlanders, as well as the comprehensive nature of their warranty. It’s all part of a concerted push by Can Am to wrest the rural utility quad crown from its contenders — one which can only gain momentum with products like these hitting the forecourts and paddocks for 2015.

When it comes time to choose a new ATV quad for the farm — and especially one to be put through a gruelling rote of farming chores by farm staff daily — it’s not the bells and whistles which count. It’s toughness, reliability, and to a large extent price which dictate a shrewd investment. Which is not to say that rider comfort, safety, storage options and power don’t come into the mix — it’s just that dollar for dollar, most Kiwi farmers are looking for a working tool, not a recreational toy. Can Am have been providing ATV quads for the New Zealand farmer for quite a while now, along with farmers around the world. And they’ve been quick to realise that the most hated thing of all, on rural spreads from Arkansas to Akaroa, is maintenance downtime. That’s why they’ve toughened up their new, low-priced, high-durability Outlander 450L series, producing a new, single seater ATV which is all about more bang for your buck. It’s a no-frills approach, focussed on work, not necessarily play. Racing stripes and alloy mags give way to a smarter air cleaner system, a re-

ADVERTORIAL

Lanolin based lubricant solves corrosion issues The aggressive nature of agricultural fertilisers, manure and other environmental factors has a high impact on the corrosion of machinery including the chassis of quad bikes, vehicles, ground spreading machinery and handling equipment, machinery and tools. As we know this equipment is expensive and can rust out within five years with no protection. Prolan provides a solution — it is an environmentally friendly lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made from lanolin. Prolan’s key advantage is its ability to stay on for long periods once applied. Prolan Lanolin lubricants and grease lubes have a natural affinity for all metal surfaces. They penetrate and protect your assets by forming a natural barrier that prevents corrosive agents penetrating the surface. Prolan lubricants resist being washed off surfaces, providing the ultimate protection in extreme environments. Prolan products are very versatile and have a large range of applications they have been used successfully on quad bike and vehicle chassis, boat trailers, motors, marinas and engineering workshops

to name a few. A number of fertiliser companies around New Zealand have used Prolan to coat loaders internally and underneath. The machine can still be washed with a water blaster and the protective coating will still remain. The product can be easily applied through a spray or undersealing gun. New to the market this year and promoted at the Field Days is the Prolan Anti-seize grease tube. This tube is a must for any maintenance toolbox and is easy to slip into the pocket. This

New Kymco in town by Joanne Speechly

Rob Titter has teamed up with one of the world’s largest manufacturers of quad bikes, motorcycles and scooters and has set up shop in Kaikohe. The new franchise is Northland’s sole supplier of Kymco and Rob says it will be a great asset for the town. The former farmer is a mechanic by trade and moved north in December to be closer to family. “I owned a sheep and beef farm in Weber, near Dannevirke, and I used to run a mechanical business from home, which is how I got involved with Kymco,” says Rob. “I found them to be a good machine, easy to work on and reliable. The bikes are known for their fuel efficiency, comfort and overall performance.” The ever-increasing Kymco range includes quads, scooters and side-bysides and the Kaikohe branch will carry out repairs on all makes and models of farm bikes and UTVs. “The last four weeks have been very positive. The work is coming in and the community and local businesses have been encouraging and helpful, so I’m looking forward to more of the same. “Kymco is also very supportive and they have sound backing in New Zealand. The local network is 100% New Zealand owned and operated and

although the quad bikes are reasonably new in this country, they have a very good reputation. “After servicing other brands and models, and as a farmer myself, I believe these bikes offer a good overall package. They’re cost-effective, easy to maintain and a good, basic farm bike.” Kymco was established in 1963, after splitting from Honda. From the outset, Kymco has been known for its intensive research and development processes and its range is now exported to over 80 countries worldwide. Kymco NZ offers a two-year unlimited kilometre warranty on all scooters and a comprehensive 24-month warranty on their ever-increasing quad bike range.

Rob Titter is looking forward to promoting Kymco in Northland

Contestants must first compete to secure a place in their region’s finals. Those that make it through must then take part in the Grand Final in Taupo held in July 2–4. Terry Copeland, CEO of New Zealand Young Farmers says “It’s a chance for the wider New Zealand community to see first-hand the specialist knowledge and skills that our future rural leaders possess. “It is a showcase for the cream of New Zealand’s up and coming agrisector talent.” Regional finalists are asked to complete in the Practical Day challenges in order to secure a place at the Grand Finals. These challenges consist

of physically demanding activities designed to test sporting, agricultural and business skills. Another event is held in the evening which quizzes competitors on farming related and general knowledge. ANZ are long time sponsors for this event and believe that the ANZ Young Farmer Contest enables learning opportunities and helps grow New Zealand’s agri sector. Graham Turley, ANZ’s managing Director says: “At its heart the contest has always been about community — both locally and nationally — bringing Kiwis together to celebrate our young farming talent and supporting the rural sector.”

It sits low in the water with its natural shark shape and tail fin and it dives through and under heavy breaking seas. The Predator long-line fishing system has now evolved into an even better fishing experience. Kevin Walton began with designing and manufacturing the Waltex brand of tough storage boxes for vehicles. One day when he was out fishing, he realised his fishing equipment was unsatisfactory so he decided to design his own kontiki and eliminate future fishing failures. Kevin and his son Nigel merged their ideas to inspire their

market-leading kontiki, The Predator by Fishtex. Auto navigation has now been introduced, with the advantage of maintaining a true course out to sea. It is set to straighten itself on course once released, making a precise route to its destination. “You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to use our product,”

says Kevin. “We have designed and developed our own unique navigation system, which is simple to use. It is cleverly designed to eliminate issues with iron sand which no longer affects the navigation of the machine. “We have built the machine with the fewest parts possible which means that less can go wrong. The battery sits at the front, balancing the machine, allowing The Predator to cut through the waves with ease,” “It is lightweight and there is a compact motorised winch available, with variable speed, making bringing in your catch very easy. There is a wide range of accessories including fishing

lamps, flags and traces.” Mike Nola, from Nola’s Sports store in Dargaville says: “It is a really good machine. We have had a definite increase in sales since the auto steer navigation has been introduced and it outmanoeuvres other brands. “We believe they are so good we only stock The Predator. They work well on the west coast beaches and the Fishtex after sales service is excellent as well, which backs me up as a supplier.” A Kiwi original, designed and made in New Zealand, The Predator is now in high demand across the country by serious fishermen.

RURAL WOMAN

Embrace your New Year’s resolutions, ladies Rural Women New Zealand is organising a free leadership course which promises to inspire women and help them realise their true potential. Designed by 2013 NEXT Businesswoman of the Year and executive director of the Agri-Women’s Development Trust, Lindy Nelson, REVEAL is a one-day course and will be held at Whangarei Showgrounds on Tuesday, March 10. Member of Rural Women NZ and CEO of Kaipara Community Health Trust Debbie Evans says she initiated the course after attending a similar event last year. “I attended the Growing Dynamic Leaders course in Wellington and I

came away from Lindy’s presentation feeling challenged and re-energised and thinking ‘I need to bring this fabulous woman to Northland to inspire others.’ “We have so many volunteers putting in hours of effort to enhance our communities, schools, service and sports clubs and emergency services but many rural people don’t get the opportunity for facilitated personal development.” The REVEAL course will help women recognise their unique skills and strengths, and build confidence.

The Whangarei REVEAL course is free to participants, thanks to funding from the Lottery Grants Board and Community Organisations Grants Scheme and is limited to 150 attendees. Debbie urges, “Arrange a day’s annual leave, find a babysitter, bring your mother, neighbour or sister along — everyone over the age of 16 is welcome. You don’t need to be a Rural Women® member to attend.” Women from the Far North to Franklin Districts are encouraged to register by February 18, by emailing Kath on kargill@ farmside.co.nz or phone or text Debbie on 027 558 6272.

RURAL WOMAN

Giving a helping hand by Ayla Miller

Loneliness and inaccessibility are issues that have always plagued rural communities and Rural Women NZ are here to help. These are issues national president of Rural Women NZ Wendy McGowan understands all too well. Wendy grew up in the small town of Fairlie, South Canterbury before going on to study nursing in Rotorua. In 1975 she married a farmer and moved to Kaharoa. It was here she became involved with Rural Women NZ as her neighbour was a member and invited her along to the meetings. “Companionship and fellowship have always been a big part of our organisation,” she says. Wendy believes her early involvement helped her gain confidence and taught important skills that have helped her later in life, such as leadership and book keeping. “The organisation really empowers women to get out there,” she says. “The group’s founding was prompted by loneliness and by not being close to places where there was access to

services. Some women would have had to walk for miles to visit their friends.” Rural Women NZ focusses on helping with access to services, education grants and boarding bursary. “Financially, we put back into the community,” Wendy says. This can reduce stress on families who might have to send their children far away to receive education. The 90-year-old group also partners with other organisations such as the Ministry of Social Development to promote movements such as the recent ‘It’s OK’ mental health campaign, which encourages communities to ask for help. Wendy says, “There is always a trigger that sets people off, whether it be a drought or stock you can’t feed.” “Animal welfare issues are often quite stressful.” “The group’s main aim is to protect, maintain and provide for rural communities.” she says.

Rural Women NZ national president Wendy McGowan, knows from personal experience that having a strong support system helps empower women in remote areas

Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd

The new year is starting off on a cautionary tone. Whilst our local domestic market just keeps chugging along, the news out of China is very mixed. CIF settlements fell US$2–3 per cubic metre for January settlements and have the potential to fall a further US$5 in February. Shipping and FOREX movements have helped offset this so far with very little movement in wharf gate prices in New Zealand to date. In both October and November 2014, the total volume of softwood logs shipped to the China Eastern seaboard was 1.4–1.5 million cubic metres with 67% of that volume coming from New Zealand and Australia. Logs

from the Pacific North West accounted for 28%, and Russia the balance. Daily consumption figures have been reducing since November. Some of this is as expected for this time of year. Usage levels have been dropping to around 45,000 cubic metres per day or about 1.3 million cubic metres per month. This is about 10,000 cubic metres per day less than the same time last year. With Chinese New Year just around the corner, usage is expected to drop further, but then so will supply out of NZ as the

effect of the recent two to three week holiday break impact on shipments. During January and February we would expect to see China inventory climb from the current about 3.2 million cubic metres to closer to four million. In most years this would not be an uncomfortable level but this year sentiment and credit conditions add to an unhealthy mix of potential downside particularly for Q1. Over the next few months we would expect to continue to see PNW volumes decrease as United States and Canadian sawmills respond to a buoyant domestic house start profile. We would also expect to see volumes increase from Russia with the ruble weakening some 47% against the US$ since mid 2014. Despite a plethora of in-country ‘issues’, Russian exporters are expected to try to capture the benefit of the exchange rate and Mr Putin reportedly really needs the cash. For the NZ forest grower it is important to realise the construction sector in China accounts for 15% of GDP and is therefore a key economic driver. A combination of factors sees current credit lines squeezed, house prices falling, confidence low, and investors heading to the share market rather than saving up for a new house. Despite the Government having removed most of the inflation quelling policy of late 2013 up to mid 2014, house sales remain

Gas & Tyre subdued. We would therefore expect to see some downward price pressure at least for Q1. On a positive note, the pruned log market remains a solid performing and very positive element. Prices have continued to firm and most commentary suggests there is further build in price to come. My records confirm at the current CIFUS$165–$170 per cubic metre prices are the highest they have been, by quite a margin, since this market grew to any sort of volume level in early 2010. On the domestic sawmill front sawmill owners report markets are just OK. Sales are strong but prices are often a very sore point. Despite significant demand in the rebuild sector, Christchurch mills report supply and demand for lumber are largely in balance. Some of the bigger North Island sawmills have been continuing to flood the city with lumber. Some have been threatening to lift prices. Once again, no one appears to want to lead the charge, no doubt concerned to risk losing customers and volume. It is thoroughly important to remember the trees keep growing regardless and the people of the world continue to need wood for wide ranging reasons. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember, the only way forward for climate, country, and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees! i based, Whangare ed and operated n locally ow M THE

Save time and money with JackJaw

An innovative product used by thousands of farmers, local authorities and contractors across the world is now available in New Zealand. It’s the JackJaw range of peg and post extractors which is unique because of its patented design. The patented jaw and lever mechanism allows you to pull stakes and posts straight up out

of the ground without bending them, keeping your expensive stakes straight for hundreds of repeated uses. Being a vertical lift, it doesn’t bend or damage the pegs or posts.

Traditional products like the popular steel star pickets have become expensive, so it makes sense to reuse old posts. The JackJaw helps you do that, saving farmers, contractors and property owners money because they no longer have to order new posts and throw out ones that would otherwise be damaged. You don’t need to take our word for it. Hear what our customers have to say: “The Jackjaw removed four out of the five earth rods. We suspect the fifth one was attached to concrete.” Chris Higgins, Electrician. “We trialled a Jackjaw on the Cambridge Bypass project on 36

waratahs. We started two crews — one at one end — one with our old extractor and the other with the JackJaw. “When they met, it was JackJaw 30 — other model six. The guys with a JackJaw hadn’t built up a sweat. We bought it on the spot.” Andy Searancke, HEB Superintendent Cambridge Bypass. “The JackJaws are becoming popular with our customers. Once they have used one, many have ordered multiple Jackjaws,” distributor Paul Herbison says. For further information contact Mr Herbison on 027 290 8306 or e-mail www.paul@jackjaw.co.nz.

Bill Kirkham, grandpa of the trade name and a retired farmer, designed and perfected an automatic chicken feeder to solve ongoing feed wastage with his hens. Word spread and today, son Mark and Alla Kirkham have developed the product to commercial manufacturing scale. Speciality feeders are still made at the Tauranga farm while the standard and large feeders are now manufactured overseas on contract. After 15 years of growth Grandpas Feeders are well established both here and overseas with further expansion considered. The business diversified into animal feeders and their products are also in environments such as zoos and bird sanctuaries. An automatic chook door is coming onto the market and a new water dispenser is in design. Grandpas Feeders are now familiar to many a country and urban dweller keeping hens. The galvanised iron and alloy feeders have a grated feed table and a lid protecting the dry feed from weather. The weight of the bird/s on the platform lifts the lid so the hens feed on demand. Wool Perspective

From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Crossbred fleece dealt blow Crossbred fleece dominated the first South Island wool auction held on January 15, although prices prior to the auction were expected to be cheaper than December rates. Considering the Napier sale held on January 8 had resulted in a definite downturn in prices for most of the longer wool types, the relatively small quantities of wool expected during the balance of the season due to the continued decline in sheep numbers may have given cause for cautious optimism. South Island brokers however, did not expect quite the ‘body blow’ dealt to them by exporters right from the auctioneer’s opening call at 8am on January 15, and were definitely showing signs of ‘grogginess’ by the end of the day. When the bell rang after the morning break, brokers came out of their corner hesitantly and, whilst the buyers were waiting in the auction ring to continue the battle, it was clearly evident that there was not a lot of spring in their (buyers) step either.

Both sides kept their guard up for the remainder of the auction and when the auctioneer’s gavel fell for the final lot of the day, a severe bruising was obvious by the number of circles (denoting ‘passed in’ lots) drawn in broker catalogues. Although full length fleece wool received sparse enquiry from the trade throughout January, there were a range of wool types which received good support. Crossbred second-shear types drew good competition and, whilst those types had also eased considerably from their very good levels of December 2014, exporters still had firm orders to fill. Crossbred lamb’s wool drew extremely spirited bidding from a wide cross section of the export trade with levels reaching between approximately 640 and 680 cents per kilogram clean, perhaps highlighting the dry conditions in many parts of the country and the

subsequent expectance of a lower than usual volume of lamb’s wool becoming available over ensuing weeks. Halfbred and Corriedale wool types continued to draw very good support from the exporting trade and it was most pleasing to see the good quality lines available during January once again being keenly bid for. Too few Merino wools were offered during early January to enable any effective comment on the market here, however Australian brokers reported large quantities on offer there (for two weeks in a row the auction offering was well in excess of 50,000 bales each week) with January auction prices reaching levels slightly ahead of December, most likely a reflection of currency movements, as the Australian dollar had weakened considerably against the Greenback, rather than any significant increase in enquiry. In light of an apparent weakening lamb meat schedule, a weaker wool market in general, and the weather gods continuing to send hot dry conditions to many parts of eastern areas of New Zealand, farmers could be forgiven for thinking the sheep industry is getting

damned tough. We do need stability from our marketplaces for sheep related products, but achieving that appears to be almost impossible for the wider and more general wool clip. Despite many attempts over time by levy funded marketing boards, grower co-operative bodies, as well as investor owned companies, to try and dictate the price of New Zealand wool, nothing has changed in regard to processor requirement. The fact remains that processors of wool will buy what they want, when they want it, and pay what they have to pay for it at the time, driven by supply and demand. Sure New Zealand wool growers can regard their wool as the best in the world, and in the eyes of most processors it is the best wool available to suit their requirements, however profit and survivability influences their businesses most. Of course there are a number of contracts available to growers who produce specific wool types (some are quite lucrative but are generally limited volume deals) but for the main wool clip encompassing all breeds, the spot market does in fact provide the base line for volume trading. That’s my view.

Already having import/export and production experience, he moved into the business of designing and producing his own range of farm gates and animal management products four years ago. Selling direct to the customer, was the solution Maarten came up with for others in the same predicament as he was in. “Our goal is to offer the lowest prices known to the market,” says Maarten “If someone has a block with no yards,

our range of portable yard panels are a great solution. With a convenient no bolts needed system, they are easy to erect, strong and sturdy. Gear up for a better ride

Since the dawn of history, humans and horses have made a great team. But without the right gear, working together with our equine friends is no walk in the park. That’s where Peter & Suzanne Liddall of HorseTackNZ Saddlery come in. The pair established HorseTackNZ Saddlery a decade ago as an online business, retailing exclusive and unique equestrian merchandise sourced from Canada, Australia and America. Today they have customers from the Bluff to the Cape, and their business has become the longest-running ‘treeless’ saddlery in NZ. Just how unique? Well, for example Suzanne recommends the custommade E-Z Fit saddle, crafted by a small Amish saddlery in the Pennsylvania Dutch country. It’s stable, secure, fully adjustable, and perfect for long distance

ASK THE PROFESSIONALS SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Also available at:

Largest Selection of Jars & Bottles in NZ Farmers markets are springing up across the country, and with them has come a revival in bottling of fruits and vegetables. Arthur Holmes Ltd is a family firm which this year celebrates 104 years in business, wholesalers of New Zealand’s largest range of glass and plastic jars and bottles for food, oil, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, scientific, herbal and homeopathic businesses, and all types of cottage industries. “We specialise in supplying small quantities of quality jars and bottles and their respective closures, says managing director, Rick Holmes. “Additional closures can be ordered

individually, and there’s no minimum purchase requirement. “Preserving jars and bottles are our mainstay and these have had a marked increase in sales in recent years. Many of our customers now sell in the frequent weekend farmers’ markets. “Today preserving is so much easier. Gone are the days of seals and bands. The modern cap now has a built-in rubber compound which when hot filled creates a vacuum once it has cooled, the twist finish allows the cap to be opened by braking the vacuum.” Arthur Holmes Ltd supplies over 20,000 customers.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES February 2015

Local farming partner Northland Farm Services expanding

67

Northland Farm Services, the ‘one stop shop’ for all dairying requirements, is growing. Its quality products and experienced services include water, irrigation and effluent solutions. The family run Whangarei business is now opening a branch in Dargaville and more staff is required for both. The team at Northland Farm Services is aiming to have the Dargaville branch open for the Northland Field Days. The Shaw family have owned and operated Northland Farm Services for the past 15 years. Garry has vast experience in fitting and designing all milking machinery, Bronwyn has an accountancy background, and son Grant adds his expertise in designing and understanding water, effluent and milking systems. The sustainable dairying water accord requires farms to reach new levels of compliance. Northland Farm Services can help farmers meet Fonterra and NRC standards and it backs its sales with a 24/7 breakdown service. The company supplies water filtration systems and fittings, and can do trenching for pipe work. Garry and Grant

ensure each system suits the farm and the operator’s requirements. Northland Farm Services’ water pumps include those for irrigation, bores, gear pumps, drainage, effluent, coolers, drinking water, and domestic use. Alongside these they can provide water controllers and submersibles as well as vat wash, deep well and wash down equipment, and can deliver on milking system accessories to suit each individual farm. Through its supplier Waikato Milking Systems, Northland Farm Services can make world first innovations available, for example the Kevlar rotation platform and the WMS electronic milk meter. The WMS Smart products range allow upgrades without having to replace the system. “The Field Days are a great opportunity to showcase our new branch,” says Bronwyn. “Come along and meet us at site 124, where we’ll have support from suppliers: Waikato Milking Systems Ltd; Global Pumps Solutions; Hi Tech; Eco Lab, and Plucks Engineering Ltd.
