It’s hard to know where to look as the extensive programme unfolds but first to catch the eye and the taste buds might well be the barbecue demonstrations, in a format hugely popular in the United States (when suitable gatherings resume there) and which are becoming popular here. “We have two amazing barbecuers (and maybe a couple of others) coming along to show you their barbecuing skills,” says event coordinator, Meagan Walters. ”Come and possibly learn a tip or two, plus we are sure some samples of their cooking will find their way into your mouth.” There will be myriad food and beverage outlets across the field days site, and many exhibitors will add to the hospitality that is an event byword. On the show front, there is entertainment for all ages. “Show favourite Chelsea Marriner and her team of talented canine companions return to dazzle you with their skills, performing an array of tricks from fetching cold drinks from the chilly bin to flag-waving and plenty in between,“ says Megan. The Taungatara Clydesdale team will be back as a fun way to travel the sights and horses of a different speed will be at the Stronghold Cutting Horses Demonstration. Cutting dates back to when cowboys worked cattle and has grown into a widely recognised sport today. Animal intelligence will also be on show in the Northland Sheep Dog Trials as competitors and dogs each day try to negotiate the course in a calm, steady progression within 10 minutes. Fitness plays a part too, and the Bank Challenge, where the banks put

interest rates aside and challenge their bitter rivals on the dirt track with horsepower and sheer determination to see who crosses the line first to take home the trophy. Then there is the Business Challenge. “You can be a novice or experienced. We will put you in a tractor with a teacher and then swap you into another tractor for the second leg of the race. Up for grabs is the business house trophy.” On Saturday, March 6 Finals Day takes place. “This is the day of the Consolation Competition, and that will be followed by the main final for competitors seeking a prize pool of over $3,000. “While the ‘big kids’ are racing each other in the main Tractor Pull competition, there will be a fun tractor racing competition just for youngsters with mini tractors to race under the watchful eye of the Northland Young Farmers organisation. There will be a prize for the winner, and all participating children will receive a cold drink and an ice cream voucher from one of our food vendors.” Also for the young, and young at heart, will be the Mobile Farm allowing all ages the opportunity to experience interaction with a range of farm and domestic animals in a safe environment. In recognition of the growth of forestry-related activity in Northland, the Northland Logger Sports is an opportunity to see logging crews battle it out in a head-to-head competition. The list goes on; sheep races, shearing, kids’ entertainment venue, a Laser Clay Shooting Challenge — without the danger of live ammunition. For 25 years the Northland Field Days has been successfully running the tractor pull competition on the 100m track for novices, experienced drivers and spectators to enjoy and this year will be no different. RMA to be repealed

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

FEbRuARY 2021

by Andy Bryenton

The contentious Resource Management Act is to be repealed, following more than a decade of calls for its removal and twenty amendments to try to make it fit for purpose. Environment minister David Parker says that the three laws which will replace it will serve New Zealand better. The call comes after the Randerson report recommended scrapping the RMA, the last in a long line of official notices that its time was over. The Productivity Commission, the Waitangi Tribunal, Local Government New Zealand, the Property Council, Infrastructure NZ and even the law’s architect Sir Geoffrey Palmer have all called for it to be struck down since its inception in 1991. National, Act and Labour all agreed both pre- and post-election that something needed to be done. Ironically, the decision to scrap the RMA came just a day after the publication of an editorial in our Weekend Lifestyler publication calling time on the unpopular law. “Urban areas are struggling to keep pace with population growth and the need for affordable housing. Water quality is deteriorating, biodiversity is diminishing and there is an urgent need to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change,” Parker said. “The new laws will improve the natural environment, enable more development within environmental limits, provide an effective role for Maori,

and improve housing supply and affordability. Planning processes will be simplified and costs and times reduced.” The existing law will be split into three, with the Natural and Built Environments Act (NBA) to provide for land use and environmental regulation, the Strategic Planning Act (SPA) to integrate with other legislation relevant to development, and the Climate Change Adaptation Act (CAA) to address complex issues associated with managed shoreline retreat, and funding and financing adaptation. It’s a huge move for the rural sector, who have long seen the RMA as an impediment to growth, and who will be watching cautiously as the details of the new NBA and CAA especially come into focus. The plan going forward is for the replacement of the RMA to proceed through parliament throughout 2021, with its implementation slated for December at the earliest.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Producing happy eggs by Ann van Engelen

AT 17 YEARS OLD JAMES BORGER HAS TAKEN OVER HIS PARENTS’ FREE-RANGE CHICKEN FARM AT TE RATA FAMILY FARM IN PAPAROA WITH PLANS TO EXPAND HIS NEW VENTURE.

“I

want to use the opportunity to give my six siblings skills for their future as well,” says James. “I was meant to travel to Holland and train at my uncle’s chicken farm, but Covid hit. We decided to fast forward me taking over the family free-range egg business as my parents were downsizing it.” The chicken farm was classed as a lower to medium-sized, and James has since decreased the stock numbers immensely. “My grandfather has an egg business in Auckland and was selling commercialgrade seconds. I have become his supplier, and we deliver our eggs directly to our customers. Mum and dad had

been doing chickens since I was born. They wanted a lifestyle that dad could be home with us for meals. We have 3,000 chickens now but used to have 12,000. “Our sheds are allowed 2,000 chickens in each, and I have now 700. That gives them a lot of space and helps with the grass growth. The whole property is 400 acres, and the hens have a portion of the land. The rest is beef stock including Kiwi Cross and Red Angus.” James’ day starts at the chicken shed checking feed and water, which is on an automated system. “I ensure they get to the paddocks they need to go to. I collect the eggs and pack them into our sanitised reusable trays. They go straight into the chiller

and then to our customers, so there is no double handling. “In the shed, they have shavings and sand they play and dust bathe in. When our hens retire, we buy new chickens at 16 weeks old. We have a mixture of Brown Shavers and Hyline. We find they are both good egg producers. “Free-range means they always have access outside and eat grass, grubs and vegetation. They also have pellet feed and get sunlight, which keeps them healthy. I have heard that a chicken can identify up to 200 friends. They have a hierarchy. The top hens sit at the top of the roost, and the lower ranks are in the lower roosts. They play together and climb trees in the paddocks.” The hens’ day starts at 4.30am–5am when the lights come on in the shed. “They get up and eat and drink, and then lay their eggs in the nesting boxes before going outside. At night the lights go on as it gets dark and they go in, hop on their roost and go to sleep. “Every few months we run an open day so people can come and see the chickens and how the eggs are laid. They get to collect eggs and be educated on where their food comes from and our website familyfarm.co.nz has a lot of information on it. “We sell our trays for $18 for a tray of 30, and we deliver in our local area. Once the birds retire, we prepare for the new chicken stock. We empty the

manure and spread it on the paddocks as it is a brilliant fertiliser for grass. We water blast the shed so there is no dirt and we sanitise where the eggs are laid. “We are on a share farming system, which is similar to a share milking system. Mum and dad own the land and the buildings. I own the chickens and do all the work, and we split the profits 50/50. It is a win-win for us. “Free-range eggs are different from caged or barn raised. If you compare the yolk ours are rich, golden orange. This is because of the minerals, grass and good things that they naturally get from the soil. Other eggs are often light pale yellow. I believe free-range tastes better because what the chicken eats is what you get. If they only have pellets, that is what you get. “I have been running the farm since June and have come to love the business more. I like the variety of work like fencing when need be or sweeping the shed. I enjoy working with animals and helping with the cattle. I like that I can give my siblings work experience and earn their own money. “Having my own company at Te Rata Family Farm and learning about marketing, writing invoices, and paying taxes is interesting. My future plan is to grow a little bit bigger and sell more eggs locally and have happy, healthy hens. Happy eggs come from happy hens living a carefree life.”

New CEO for rescue helicopter

Northland Rescue Helicopter has announced Craig Gibbons as its new CEO. Mr Gibbons is a helicopter pilot with vast experience in the air ambulance sector. Mr Gibbons was most recently general manager operations at CareFlight, an Australia-wide aeromedical charity. “The Northland Rescue Helicopter has an incredible reputation around the world and I am looking forward to ensuring we continue to provide a worldclass air ambulance service for the region,” he says. “CareFlight and Northland Rescue Helicopter have the same goals with both organisations committed to saving lives and serving local communities by providing the highest standard of rapid response critical care. With 2020 being the Northland rescue chopper’s busiest year on record, it highlights the importance of having a dedicated Northland rescue chopper service. “It is also clear to me that Northlanders and local businesses are hugely loyal supporters of the service, which is highlighted every year by the generosity they show during the annual appeal. It is that sort of support that

helps keep our choppers in the air.” 2020 was a busy year for the Northland Rescue Helicopter, finishing the year with 1,115 call-outs making it the busiest year since the service began 32 years ago. Despite the Covid-19 lockdowns, the helicopter saw an increased demand for its service, alongside assisting with the country’s coronavirus pandemic response. There were several notable rescues including transporting a police dog to the Veterinary Specialist Group Clinic in Auckland for treatment after it was shot during an incident near Dargaville. The helicopter attended to a man swept off his boat at sea, and a teenager was helped off a cliff after falling off his kayak during a trip near Tutukaka. There were 77 call-outs in the first 17 days of January including attending ten call-outs in one day. Mr Gibbons takes over from Paul Ahlers who stepped into the CEO role temporarily following the retirement

Water conservation sensible

Bouts of timely rainfall mean this summer has been ‘kinder’ to many Northlanders than last year’s prolonged drought, but with much of summer and autumn still to come, authorities say it is still sensible to save water where possible. “When viewed as a whole, the weather around the region to date was collectively what could more loosely be called a ‘typical’ Northland summer in terms of overall rainfall,” says Northland Regional Council’s group manager Regulatory Services, Colin Dall. “Coming into this summer, spring was drier than usual, as was the first official month of summer, December, with western areas and Kaitaia receiving around 30 per cent of typical rainfall, and the east coast receiving around 10 per cent.” Given the region is nearly through summer, it is common sense for everyone to be conserving water wherever possible, whether on town supply, tank or groundwater, and ensure it was not wasted unnecessarily. That includes people keeping a vigilant eye out for, and repairing, any leaks in their water supply systems. “Northlanders on tank supplies need to be especially mindful of conserving water,” says NRC’s Water and Waste monitoring manager Alison McHugh. “Aside from the obvious financial cost of buying in the water, people that need tank refills also have potential environmental costs, putting pressure on supplies in other areas, reducing water in streams and rivers and potentially affecting aquatic habitats.”

Those who source water from groundwater supplies have a similar role to play as not all aquifers are created equal. “Regionally aquifer levels are lower than usual — again largely the legacy of last year’s prolonged drought and were being monitored closely by the regional council. Typically aquifer levels decline over summer and reach their lowest levels in autumn before recharging over the wetter months. “While some aquifers are able to cope over the dry months, others are more susceptible to seawater intrusion, particularly those in small coastal areas. Be mindful of your pumping rates when taking groundwater. “If you are living in a coastal area, reduce your pump flows to help avoid adverse effects if you haven’t already done so, regardless of whether you have a consent or not. “There are hundreds of Northland users taking relatively small amounts of water who don’t need resource consent to take that water, but still need to respect the resource.” Several hundred people or organisations do have consents. District councils taking water for public water supply and farmers irrigating pasture are among the biggest users, requiring hundreds of thousands of litres daily.

Stock in dry conditions in the Takou Bay area near Kerikeri

While some regional council resource consent holders have already had to cease their takes due to rivers reaching low flows, that is not uncommon over summer. Regional river and rainfall

data is available at www.nrc.govt.nz/ riversandrain and water restrictions for public water supplies operated by Northland’s three district councils are available on bewaterwise.org.nz.

PART ONE

SEIZING FARMING OPPORTUNITIES BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Lana and Cam Brown both grew up in the rural Whangarei area and have become farmers who have transitioned from Northland, to Southland and on to Australia in the dairy industry.

“M

y parents decided to get out of town and moved to Whakapara to be in the country when I was young. I went to Hikurangi Primary and Kamo High School,” says Lana. “Cam grew up nearby, and his family had a farm at Whangarei Heads. We eventually married, and dairy farmed out at Opuawhanga for four years. We had a herd of approximately 300 Friesian mix with Ayrshires. In 2004 Cam and I moved to Invercargill dairy farming and gaining experience.

“A moving company took our belongings in a truck, and we drove our ute towing a trailer with our dozen chickens, dogs and our two cats in the vehicle with us. We had our three children and my dad too. It was interesting as we had to find motels that would take us with all of our animals along the way. “In his younger days Cam had gone to an agriculture school in Dunedin, but we still had to learn about the weather patterns. The first night at Edendale we woke up freezing because I had left all the windows open in the house.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

“We had taken our cows with us, and they were covered in snow. Being Northland cows and not used to that type of cold they didn’t know what the hang was going on. Our dogs didn’t know how to walk in snow — it was an amazing shock for all of us. “The farm had a barn for the stock, so we put the cows in there when it got too cold. The troughs would freeze over, and we had to smash the ice on top for the cows to get water and we grew turnips for feed. Our cows weren’t used to turnips, and you needed to be aware that they could choke as they ate them like apples. “Another new thing for us was the Edendale dairy factory would ship excess whey to farms for the stock. The whey was placed in the cows’ troughs as a supplement, which the cattle really enjoyed. “It started as free, but as it became popular, we had to pay. The cows loved the product, but the factory eventually stopped supplying it as it became good to spread on farms to help with grass growth instead. “When our time there came to an end we wanted to buy our own farm. We looked everywhere but couldn’t afford anything in New Zealand so decided to try Australia. We flew there five times looking for farms and purchased one in Katamatite, Victoria in 2007. “We had 800 acres and milked a herd of 400 mixed Friesian cows. We were shocked at the size of the cows. “They were huge as they were a different breed to what we were used to in New Zealand.

“Australians thought the bigger the cow, the better but they were too heavy for the paddocks, and they also ate more. You don’t need big cows to get a good quantity of milk, so over the years we sold some and brought new stock in. “Not long after we moved there we were able to purchase another 200 acres off a neighbour. We built our herd up to 800 milking through a 50 bale rotary in partnership with another Kiwi family.” Lana and Cam’s moving experience had encouraged other Kiwis to also look at Australia due to the affordability of purchasing a farm. “After three years we decided to go out on our own and purchased a farm of 380 acres with no cows as we had invested all of our money in the land. We were lucky as we had found a great stock agent who helped us get started. He initially gave us 30 cows that we paid off over time. “The farm had a 60 bale rotary, and with the 30 cows, it took us 10 minutes to milk. “We slowly built our herd up to a mixed herd of 600 Friesian, Ayrshire and other breeds. We then bought a neighbouring farm, and our daughter and her partner worked it for us and milked 250 cows there for three years.” In 2012 the Browns were hit by a major flood that saw their farm go under water and their world turned upside down. They have continued to farm but have come up with alternative ways to create income. Read part two of the Brown’s story next month.

The Environmental Protection Authority’s Safer Homes programme has some tips and tricks to keep in mind before you fire up the grill. “If you have launched into barbecue season without doing a maintenance check on your gas bottle, better late than never,” says the Safer Homes programme manager, Lizzie Wilson. “Use the bubble test each time you go to connect the gas bottle. Apply soapy water to the connections and turn it on. If bubbles appear you may have a gas leak and should get the cylinder checked.” Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is what most people use to fuel their barbecues. It is butane, propane or a mixture of these two fuels. You can also buy smaller canisters for tramping or camping. “LPG ignites and burns easily, which is why it is great for cooking and heating, but if it leaks, it can ignite and sometimes cause explosions. ACC figures from the past five years show about 800 people annually suffer LPGcylinder-related injuries, including soft tissue injuries, lacerations and burns. “If you have had your gas bottle for a while, it might be time to get it tested. By law, you must make sure your LPG cylinder is tested every 10 years at an approved testing station. When you are finished, don’t forget to safely store your gas bottle upright — ideally outside or in

Cool season Captain wins in winter Less than six months before pastoral farmers must comply with strict limits on nitrogen use, plantain is back in the spotlight for autumn sowing this year. One plantain, in particular, is providing great cool-season growth. That means it mops up more soil nitrogen at the riskiest time of the year for leaching, plus it provides extra feed when it is most needed on-farm. Pasture systems specialist, Blair Cotching, says Captain CSP (cool season plantain) has been specifically bred to keep growing during the cooler months of the year. That is very important for reducing soil nitrogen (N) losses, particularly in the current regulatory environment. “Many farmers are looking for ways to mitigate the risk of soil N loss from their systems while maintaining sustainable levels of production. “Industry research has shown plantain has real potential here, to the point where it is now included in Overseer.” Captain’s value to both red meat and dairy producers extends beyond a strong environmental profile, says Blair, who heads the pasture systems team at Barenbrug. Captain also grows strongly in other seasons and performs particularly well in the summer despite being bred for cool-season performance. “In terms of stock performance, it’s palatable, easily digested and rich in essential minerals and trace

elements. So there are distinct animal nutrition benefits, on top of its use as an N-mitigation tool.” Grazing utilisation is good because Captain remains obviously upright in the pasture year-round. Captain has shown good persistence in mixed-sward trials. Well-managed, it will thrive for up to three years. Blair says a key benefit is the ability to use the new plantain in different ways, depending on farmers’ individual priorities. In red meat systems, for example, mixed with red and white clovers, Captain offers a high live weight gain finishing crop. Alternatively, it can be part of a perennial pasture mix. Dairy farmers can sow it as a specialist three to four-year pasture,

mixed with hybrid ryegrass and white clover or include it with new autumnsown perennial ryegrass pastures. “It’s also well-suited to over-sowing into thin pastures in spring.” Barenbrug is working to develop new plantain cultivars, with both environmental and animal nutrition benefits in mind, he says. “We have two goals with our plantain research, both revolving around N mitigation. The first is breeding improved plantains, with even more cool-season growth to utilise more N in winter. The second is to increase the levels of the secondary metabolites that help reduce N leaching.” Seed for Captain CSP is available for autumn sowing now. For more detail, contact your merchant.

Local market comes into focus The avocado export season is coming to a close for Just Avocados with 90% of the supply group’s forecast volume shipped by mid-January. General manager of group sales and marketing, Jacob Darling, says programmes to Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong and India are making up the final part of their export season. “Asia continues to be an important part of our strategy and continuing to build relationships with our partners in these markets is critical for future trade. “This season, we maintained a good percentage of volume to Asia while balancing the need to capture the great returns from Australia. “We will finish up with around 20% of our total export volume, having gone to markets in Asia.” Shipping delays into Australia appear to be the new norm currently, but Jacob says that parent company Darling Group’s investment in a new warehousing and logistics facility in the Brisbane Markets has mitigated some of the severity of issues for Just Avocados. “The new facility has allowed us to receive and clear product as efficiently as possible under the current conditions.” Jacob says that an emphasis has been put on air freight to Australia in the latter part of the season as rising maturities increasingly challenged the time frame to deliver a premium product to market. While nearing completion of export, Jacob says work would continue with their domestic partner Zeafruit to pack for the New Zealand market. “There is still fruit out there post-export and because of the prevalence of small fruit that had been left to size and a predicted strong New Zealand market.” Rick Hannay, avocado procurement for fresh produce marketer Zeafruit says the company anticipates the local market will continue to strengthen between now and April. “The demand during the summer months has been consistent with

TALKING FROM

EXPERIENCE by Ann van Engelen

Julie Burke farms with her husband Sam in Aranga and appreciates all life has to offer after needing the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service due to a freak farming accident in May 2019.

“I

grew up in Onerahi and my parents still live in the house my dad built when I was six months old,” says Julie. “I was brought up with animals but not on a farm. We had ponies and were involved in things like hunting with hounds. My father-in-law was the Master of Northland Hunt for 20 years and that is how I first met Sam. “After school, I got a job milking cows at Tangiteroria and Sam’s folks had a farm there too. We became friends and eventually married. We are now at Aranga, as his parents bought this farm 21 years ago. We have 350 crossbred dairy cows and milk once a day. The property is 196 hectares, predominantly

grass-based and we make silage for winter feed. “In winter the stock is fed on a feed pad so they don’t mess up the wet paddocks, and we bring in Palm Kernel in case of a feed deficit.” In August 2019 Julie had a freak quad bike accident while moving cattle and says it is thanks to the speed of the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service that she was able to get to hospital quickly. “Sam was in Whangarei with our daughter. I was moving the cows to the cowshed and I came up the hill on the quad and hit a rut on the race. I flew up in the air and the bike came down on top of me.

Mahurangi Vision Centre is an independent optometry practice in Warkworth owned by optometrist Sarah Denny. Sarah followed in the steps of her father and grandfather to become a third generation optometrist. After spending time in the family practice, she realised how rewarding the job was and how much of a difference she could make to people’s lives. Following high school Sarah spent five years travelling and living mainly in winter to teach snowboarding in Colorado and Wanaka. After this Sarah completed a BSc majoring in Human Nutrition at Otago University, followed by her optometry degree which was completed with honours, at Auckland University. Mahurangi Vision Centre provides friendly, comprehensive service with options to suit all budgets and styles. They have very sophisticated equipment for detecting and monitoring eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, and Sarah is a qualified glaucoma prescriber. There are three staff members at Mahurangi Vision Centre and all are there to help make the experience as easy as possible. Donna is a dispensing optician and receptionist, and can answer any questions people may have about frames and lenses. Kathryn is part-time and is another friendly face on reception.

Julie Burke is grateful to have the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service available after having a freak quad accident while collecting the family herd for milking

“I don’t remember any initial pain, but a lot of discomfort. The longer I was lying there the pain got more intense. Nearly four hours later my mother-in-law Flora came back from the other side of

the farm. She wondered where the cows were and headed out to find them and found me on the race. “I sent her to get a friend who was living in the farm cottage as I knew he

was calm and had done first aid training. I knew if they lifted the quad off my body after such a long period of time my body would go into toxic shock. “Thankfully he called 111 and told the operator that he believed it could be a helimed job due to the lack of access for an ambulance. The paramedics even had to be brought up to me on a quad. They were concerned about spinal fractures and didn’t want an ambulance to cart me to Whangarei. I think it took 20 minutes for the helicopter to get there. The chopper paramedic was brilliant. He did a full head to toe assessment

and kept me informed the whole way. I was lucky to have no spinal injuries or fractures but had severed my nerves in my left leg and had no feeling at all. The doctor thought it may have needed to be amputated but I was determined that wouldn’t happen.” Julie worked with her physiotherapist to get the leg working again. “I can now walk and nearly run, but still can’t feel my toes. When I hear a chopper go over now I know immediately if it is the helimed. My heart skips a beat and I hope the person needing them will be ok. Living remotely I am so grateful

for the service. I am back working parttime on the farm. I am careful and not as quick but am thankful I can participate in everything I want to. It really was a freak accident. I encourage people to be constantly aware of your surroundings and the terrain you are travelling over. Speed doesn’t help anyone — slower will get you to the other side safely. “Always make sure you are fed and hydrated. When I had my accident it was late afternoon and a beautiful day. I had chores to do and may not have been completely focussed on what was ahead. Farming is an awesome career, it

is our world. Our goal includes reducing our farm debt, regrassing and cropping. You need a good crop and the right grass for our climate. “Sam’s mum Flora has always milked cows and worked with us on a regular basis. “We farm the same as other people and a part of that is ensuring our animals are kept well fed. If we need feed for them we will bring it in, we don’t think twice. “They are the heart and soul of everything that goes on around the farm.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

It’s that time of year again!

Obviously, the agricultural and pastoral shows (to give them their full name), have always been important in our rural communities. I would argue, however, that in 2021 they are more important than ever before. There are several reasons for this heightened importance and therefore, several reasons we should support the shows like never before. First, the primary sector has been the main reason that New Zealand has not been worse hit by Covid-19 depression, so far. With our other two big export earners, tourism and international student fees, missing in action for obvious reasons, it has been agriculture, viticulture, horticulture keeping us afloat. It’s good for that to be recognised in as many ways as possible and these rural events provide a good opportunity to showcase such talent and hard work. Second, A&P Shows provide an opportunity to bridge the gap between urban and rural that seems as wide as ever in this country. It’s particularly visible when policy set in metropolitan fails to take into account the realities of rural life, not to mention the efforts

The New Zealand red meat sector exported $9.2 billion worth of products during 2020, an increase of one per cent on the previous year, according to an analysis by the Meat Industry Association.

already being made by our first and foremost conservationists, namely the farming community. My third and final reason for arguing that A&P Shows are highly relevant can be summed up in the phrase, ‘support local’. With the arteries of international trade clogged by the uncertainty brought about by a global pandemic, it’s only right that we look to our nearest neighbours to get us, and them, through these dark days. As always, I’d encourage you to contact your local MP if you’re needing help in dealing with a government department or making elected representatives aware of what’s going on in your world. My constituents of Kaipara ki Mahurangi should know that I’m always keen to hear from them via 09 412 2496 or chris.penkmp@parliament.govt.nz, and of course, in person when I’m next in the area. Visit my Chris Penk Facebook page facebook.com/christopherpenk to see where I’m heading next in my mobile office; a converted horse float affectionately nicknamed Natty. Take care out there, and hopefully, we’ll see you at an A&P Show soon!

Overall exports during the year reached historically high levels. They were seven per cent above 2018 exports ($8.6 billion) and 21 per cent above 2017 ($7.6 billion). “The results demonstrate that New Zealand’s red meat exports have remained stable despite the challenges of the global pandemic,” says MIA chief executive Sirma Karapeeva. “That is great news for the New Zealand economy and farmers. We have a diverse market portfolio and last year exported products to 111 countries around the world. This strategy, together with our strong market relationships, has been critical to helping the industry weather the volatility over the past year. “It also highlights the key role our industry is playing in underpinning the New Zealand economy during the global pandemic.” She says there remains a strong global demand for safe and natural high-quality red meat during the pandemic. “This is New Zealand’s competitive advantage and we need

to continue telling this story.” The top 10 markets for New Zealand meat remained unchanged during 2020. China continued to be the major customer, with exports worth $3.3 billion, accounting for 36 per cent of total exports for the year. During 2020, value-added halal processing continued to be a vital component of the industry’s business model. Nearly all of New Zealand’s export processing plants undertake halal processing, which allows them to export cuts from any animal to Muslim and non-Muslim customers around the world. In the 2019/20 processing season, which covers the 12 months to the end of September 2020, New Zealand exported 417,232 tonnes of halalcertified meat, worth approximately $3.5 billion, to 59 countries. The sector exported a total of $836.7 million worth of product during the month of December. China was the largest December market with $379.4 million, followed by the US with $155.9 million and the UK with $38.2 million.

Idea for a greener future Planting out seedling trees is good for the environment in several ways, from oxygenation to biodiversity to remediating a habitat for native birds and insects. However, the usual method of planting out seedlings involved non-biodegradable plastics. Noticing this irony, young Canterburybased innovator Julia Christensen brainstormed a solution, turning natural jute into a replacement for the plastic ‘sleeves’ previously used to encapsulate the roots and stems of growing seedlings. The idea grew into a concept, won the 12-year-old inventor Environment Canterbury’s wrybill award for eco-innovation, then grew into a

company supplying products all over New Zealand. “My idea started when I was going for walks or drives and started noticing so many plastic plant protectors everywhere,” says Julia. “I was annoyed that we were planting trees to help the environment but then we were wrecking it by using plastic. I wondered if I could find a way to fix the problem.” Protect your plants with biodegradable Eco Gards. Come see us at Field Days to find out more, enter our competition, or place an order.

MAINTAIN PHYSICAL DISTANCING

Vulnerable to wind, arid conditions and animals, seedling trees need protection. Now there’s a new form of ecologically sound shielding for tomorrow’s tall timber

After trying several concepts, EcoGard was born; a flexible, permeable, tough and all organic jute ‘pod’ which helps nurture seedling growth through the planting process, eventually decomposing to give its nutrients to the growing tree. Proof against critters, wind and other knocks from nature, the EcoGard system is now tried and tested, with good feedback from users. The jute sleeve creates a microclimate for the

seedling within, blocking spray drift and letting in warmth and light while also protecting against adverse weather effects. You can see the benefits of this simple but potentially game-changing idea at Northland Field Days, as EcoGard presents its concept to the north following extensive use in Canterbury for events such as the Big Give, a replanting exercise with the Student Volunteer Army at Styx River.

Monitoring technology encourages work-life balance Allflex New Zealand is well-known for animal identification and cow collar technology that monitors individual cow health and heat status. Rhonda and Steven Bamford use the Allflex cow collar monitoring system on their 920 cow Jersey herd. That helps relieve time pressure on Rhonda and the team during mating. “The decision to use the Allflex monitoring system and invest in collar technology was an easy one,” says Steven. “We knew Allflex was a trusted brand with experienced people. Our rep knew we were early adopters to tech and that we were looking for ways to take the pressure off me and not be so reliant on me during mating. “We have access to accurate, reliable information and get early detection of cows who are under pressure. The collar allows us time to focus on the goal of achieving an empty rate of five per cent.” Allflex Livestock Intelligence is part of MSD Animal Health, the world leader in the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of solutions for animal identification, monitoring and traceability. “The collars were a substantial investment, but what price do you put on your health and wellbeing? The Forest Owners Association says the Climate Change Commission has endorsed the crucial role exotic forestry will carry out in meeting New Zealand’s net greenhouse gas emission targets in 2030 and 2050. It says some groups, such as the Environmental Defence Society, have misunderstood the relative roles that exotics, and a new policy of planting native trees, might play. FOA president, Phil Taylor, points to the 380,000 new hectares of exotic plantations the commission anticipates will need to be planted between now and 2035. “These extra trees will be the support act for the commission’s targets of massive reductions of the overall carbon dioxide emissions from industry and transport. This decarbonisation has to be the thrust of meeting New Zealand’s climate change mitigation obligations. “Anything else is delaying solving the problem. Pines are great at buying time, but they don’t cut gross emissions themselves. The trees the commission has identified are fast-growing and so they will sequester carbon at a rapid rate, which the commission acknowledges.

Phil Taylor, Forest Owners Association president

“In a rotation forest, they maintain that high carbon bank. They also provide an average export return to the landowner for the timber which is above that from farming.

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING THE HARVEST OF ANY:

country being swallowed up by blanket forestry. That was never going to happen. “In light of the Climate Change Commission’s prediction clarifying this, we’d expect to see the government dropping its proposed restrictions on the conversion of farmland to forestry. “There is no takeover. Landowners should make their own decisions about farming or forestry, and what species of trees they want to plant.” Mr Taylor says if the government sets out to have 300,000 hectares of native trees planted by 2035, it will suit highly erodible and remote land, which might be better not to harvest. “The carbon sequestration rate of native trees is not superior as the EDS is saying. “Pines and eucalypts lock up carbon much quicker. That is a well-established fact. There will be very little carbon locked up in these slow-growing indigenous trees, even by the New Zealand zero-carbon deadline of 2050. “They are very much an investment for subsequent generations. By the end of the century there will be a substantial carbon bank in these native trees, and perhaps some timber available from them by that time. “Planting and protecting indigenous trees is a labour-intensive process, and so the government will be providing plenty of welcome jobs in weed clearance

and pest culling in remote areas to ensure the new plantings survive. “There will also need to be work helping those indigenous trees cope with climate change. Some trees, such as nikau, pukatea and ribbonwood don’t tolerate droughts well.” Mr Taylor says in the short term the plantation forest industry will be available if the commission’s formula doesn’t meet its targets over the next five to ten years. “Governments around the world have most often failed to meet climate change targets. If, for instance, the Manipouri electricity doesn’t become available for the national grid, then there might be a need for a large volume of reasonably rapid carbon lock-up. “Exotic trees can deliver on this, and that is without the cost of reverting to buying expensive carbon credits from overseas, or asking the taxpayer to make up the difference.” He says FOA looks forward to making these points at the upcoming consultation on the recommendations. “The Climate Change Commission has done an excellent job of informing our sector of their thinking leading up to their recommendations. “I am sure they will be listening carefully to our response. We have noted that the commission acknowledges the role plantation forests will be playing in

the bioeconomy in the transition to a post-fossil-fuel future and the carbon locked up in timber construction. “We are also going to tell them that they need to take into account the environmental benefits of plantation forestry, such as recreation, soil stability and clean water. “Plus of course, substantial regional employment and regular income throughout the growth cycle and at harvest time.”

Bright forestry forecast

The latest analysis from the Ministry for Primary Industries quarterly report, Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries, information suggests forestry exports are expected to increase 8.1 per cent to $6 billion. This is for the year ending June 2021 due to strong demand for logs from China and the demand for sawn timber from the United States of America. Growth in the Chinese construction industry and the US housing market is expected to support demand for our key forestry products over the medium term. In addition, domestic timber demand is expected to remain strong due to increased residential construction. The log export revenue fell 24 per cent during the year ended June 2020, largely due to Covid-19 related

disruptions to harvesting, logistics, and demand. China remains the key market for New Zealand log exports, making up 82 per cent of overall log export values. Log exports are forecast to reach $3.2 billion in the year ending June 2021, up 12 per cent from 2020 but well below 2018/19 values when prices and volumes reached all-time highs. Chinese demand for logs remains strong, driven by increased construction activity. The industry expects demand for logs to continue for the medium term if China’s construction industry remains strong.

There is still a strong demand for logs

The outlook for log prices is less clear despite strong demand signals from key markets. European foresters have been sending increased volumes of spruce logs into China in response to a spruce beetle infestation, which is likely to put downward pressure on New Zealand log prices. On the other hand, a planned ban on Russian log exports in early 2022 is expected to support demand,

and prices, for New Zealand logs in the medium term. Demand from South Korea, our second largest market for logs, is forecast to be relatively stable over the forecast period. Demand from India is expected to remain subdued for the remaining part of the year as Covid-19 cases decline, but it is expected to increase as its GDP growth rebounds.

Positive export onion season The 2021 New Zealand export onion season is off to an early and positive start. “Amongst all the turmoil created by Covid-19 and the weather, it is great to be able to report that exports of New Zealand onions to Indonesia are underway, two months earlier than last year,” says Onions New Zealand chief executive, James Kuperus. “This is thanks to New Zealand Government trade officials’ efforts to keep trade open and a decision by Indonesian officials to release quota early. Seventy-eight tonnes of onions harvested earlier in January left for Indonesia. While this is small, it signals the season is underway early, and prices reflect the additional costs of growing and exporting during a pandemic. “The growing season has been favourable for onion growers. There has been adequate rainfall, and the quality is very good. The drought in Auckland did not materialise. While water was short, there was frequent rain during the growing season.” Total onion exports are expected to be between 170,000 and 175,000 tonnes in 2021. New Zealand onions are exported to 45 countries. Last year, the industry was worth $145 million. New Zealand onions are internationally renowned for their long keeping qualities and the industry, for its food safety practices. “New Zealand growers planted approximately six per cent less onions than last year. This was due to the

Beacon registrations rise New data compiled by Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre NZ shows Kiwis are taking safety seriously as greater numbers head outdoors. RCCNZ deputy manager operations, Neville Blakemore, says distress beacon registrations in December 2020 were up almost 30 per cent on the previous year, with more than 2,000 registered. “The up-tick in beacon registrations in December was in line with RCCNZ noticing more activity in January, as more Kiwis took to the outdoors through the holiday period,” said Mr Blakemore. “Accidents happen unexpectedly. Having a beacon increases your chances of survival as it gives early notification of your location and situation. It enhances and speeds up the rescue — effectively it takes the search out of search and rescue. “The range of beacon use was demonstrated in one day recently, when RCCNZ responded to five beacon alerts encompassing two people clinging to an up-turned dinghy; a person in a

Kahurangi National Park hut who had had a medical event; a motorcyclist who had crashed his motorcycle in the hills north of Naseby; a person who had become violently unwell on the Hump Track; and a tramper who had become isolated and disoriented on the Te Araroa Trail. “A beacon signal is picked up from almost anywhere and a response commences immediately. In all these instances there was a helicopter with the people within the hour. “Many people find cell phones have no coverage when they need help. Cell phone coverage is patchy, but a beacon is picked up by satellite coverage — it makes a big difference when it really matters. “People should think about having a personal locator beacon on them even when they didn’t anticipate being in an Neville Blakemore, Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre deputy manager operations

Oxley’s quality furniture Northland Field Days marks the first year of Pam and Martin Shead introducing Oxley’s Furniture to New Zealand — and what a first year it has been. “The wonderful diversity of scenery and spectacular locations within Northland make an ideal environment for outdoor living and the quality of Oxley’s Furniture stands up to the harshest weather conditions our region can throw at us,” says Martin. “It will ‘never blow away in the wind’, is a phrase used on a regular basis when people view the furniture.” After a great response at Dargaville last March to their range of outdoor garden furniture, the country went into lockdown with most shows and events cancelled for the remainder of the autumn and winter. “It was a tough time as we rely on showing this range of high-quality furniture to people. You need to touch and feel the furniture and look closely at how it is constructed in order to

appreciate the beautifully timeless designs. The exceptional quality and workmanship make every piece unique,“ says Martin. Oxley’s has managed to promote the range locally through smaller markets and events throughout Northland and now has a growing number of customers throughout the region. “One of the best compliments made is that we have had several customers who started off buying one set of furniture and now have come back to buy more,” says Pam. Made from 100 per cent recycled aluminium, the furniture will never rust and the final powder coated finish will never fade. The sand cast components are fully welded together so there are no nuts and bolts to come loose. It comes with

a lifetime warranty on the structure of each piece. Rather than replacing your outdoor furniture every few years, Oxley’s furniture really is a sound investment that will continue to look good for generations and what’s more, is made from a sustainable raw material, so is also good for our environment. Importing from the UK where it is handmade, has presented its own problems with shipping costs doubling and lead times

extending over the past year. Oxley’s made the wise decision to continue to build up their stock, meaning not only can they offer immediate delivery but they have also managed to hold their 2020 prices for this year’s Northland Field Days. Visit their website oxleysfurniture. co.nz or better still see and feel the quality for yourself at stand numbers 105–107 in the Lifestyle Pavilion 1, Northland Field Days, March 4–6.”

Ninety Mile Beach plan

A long-awaited and ground-breaking formal management plan for Te Oneroa-a-Tohe/Ninety Mile Beach formally came into effect on Monday, January 25. Established through Treaty of Waitangi settlement legislation in 2012, an eight-member Te Oneroa-a-Tohe Board, with an even split of iwi and local government members, was tasked with developing a management plan for the iconic beach. “The comprehensive beach management plan represents a great deal of work. This includes substantial public input across the past two years in particular,” says beach board chair Haami Piripi. “Te Oneroa-a-Tohe/Ninety Mile Beach has great cultural, historical and spiritual significance, not just to the five local iwi who make up Te Hiku o Te Ika, but to the wider community, Maori and non-Maori alike, New Zealand-wide starting with Ta Ara Wairua — the spiritual pathway. “The plan contains a number of measures designed to reflect public concerns and feedback expressed to the board, including the care and safety of all users and visitors to the beach, acknowledging tangata whenua and protecting the environment.” These include a 30km/h speed limit within 200 metres of any beach accessway or any activity such as boat launching and people fishing on the beach. A 60km/h speed for the remainder of the beach and requiring regional and district plans to recognise and protect Te

Oneroa-a-Tohe and Te Ara Wairua as a culturally significant landscape. “The measures won’t have immediate effect — they need to be actioned in the relevant legal documents such as council bylaws. The board’s purpose is to provide governance and direction to everyone with a role in — or responsibility for — Te Oneroaa-Tohe management area in order to protect environmental, economic, social, cultural and spiritual wellbeing within that area for the benefit of present and future generations.” The board is hopeful that the plan will help undo the scars of historical damage, neglect, Haami Piripi chairman pollution and abusive behaviour Te Oneroa-a-Tohe/Ninety Mile Beach Board chair that had impacted the beach. The focus has always been on getting the kai and recognising and providing balance of the plan right, believing its for spiritual, cultural and historic importance and likely longevity meant it relationships with the beach.” was not something that could be rushed. HORTICULTURE ADVERTORIAL

Diversifying on-farm with avocado Beef with avocado can not only be a great combination on a plate, but also on the farm itself. Land-use diversification is becoming a popular method to not only increase environmental sustainability but also profit and cashflow. With international demand for avocados continuing to grow, avocados are proving to be a viable option for land diversification in areas with the right conditions. Lynwood Avocado Nursery has been supplying avocado trees to New Zealand growers for more than 30 years and is recognised as a world leader in avocado propagation. CEO Stuart Pascoe joined the company six years ago and has seen changes in not only where avocados are being grown, but who is growing them. “We are getting more enquiries from farmers, of all types, contacting us to plant avocado as a way to diversify their farms,” says Stuart. “If they have the correct soil type, avocado growing has become a positive way to plant trees and gain income at the same time. We are helping farmers all over the north and the south as well. “The paddocks that don’t grow much grass are often good for avocados

because the soil drains well and the trees don’t like wet feet. Many farmers are realising avocados complement their industry in a positive way, including financially. “We want people to understand how avocados can be a good way to help their investment. Our team has the expertise and skills to support growers with their decisions and help their trees get off to a good start. “People are very keen to try new things. I go on-farm, and we dig some holes to see what soil is down there. We walk and talk and give advice on whether avocado will work on your land or not. It is good for farmers to know we will give an honest opinion if avocados are a crop they should invest in. We have never been to field days before, and are excited to meet farmers there this year.”

BUSINESS PROFILE

The Grove Supply Co The Grove Supply Co is New Zealand’s premium supplier of olive grove equipment. Owned and managed by Chris and Linda Smith at their own grove in Mangawhai, they supply groves and hobby orchardists around New Zealand. “We provide anything that a small to medium olive grower would need, from harvesting equipment, brilliant deleafers, nets, rakes and bins, a huge range of fustis and stainless-steel tanks, taps, filters and cappers,” says Linda. “We also have equipment for orchardists to crush and press other fruits.” The Grove Supply Co has grown since Chris and Linda purchased the business in 2017. They have added a wider range of core items to cater for most aspects of picking, processing and storage of New Zealand’s extra virgin olive oils and other fruit juices and oils. They currently import from Italy, Greece, Slovenia and Spain, and continually search for lines that will help improve the profitability of New Zealand olive growers. This year they are showcasing a few new items to make grove and orchard management easier, faster and more effective. The mulcher/grass cutter they recently imported from Italy is a case in point. “Often pruning of olive or other fruit trees means removing large limbs, and then the problem comes when the prunings need to be dealt with. Burning is no longer an environmentally appropriate solution. Mulching the

Chris and Linda Smith — The Grove Supply Co

branches on-site returns the nutrients to the soil. “With the revolutionary side cutter, this Zanon mulcher cuts the grass and weeds around the trees at the same time keeping the orchard looking tidy and removing the need for harmful chemical weed sprays.” Chris and Linda will be at the Northland Field Days in March and will have the mulcher on display, along with several other tools and machines.

“We are excited to be showcasing a new small battery-operated pruning saw from Zanon, which is so light it can be used with one hand. If it is anything like the chainsaw, this will be a very special addition to a grove or orchard. The harvest season is just around the corner

so check out the harvesting section of our website grovesupply.co.nz to view the special offers available. If you have any special requests or would like more information on the range of equipment, please get in touch with us or visit us at the Northland Field Days at site E19B.”

AG CONTRACTORS Kill mould, leave the gold by Andy Bryenton

Hay and silage are two of the staple products which keep our livestock farming operations working through the adverse weather and conditions often nature hands down. Now an improvement in storing these feeds has led to a breakthrough in quality. Michael Griffiths is an experienced farmer, and the local Kaipara representative for Edge inoculant. This scientifically formulated new product decimates mould in silage clamps, pits and bales. However, he’s quick to point out that as a part of the force bringing this new tech to the frontlines, he’s already a true believer. Looking at his photographs of silage prepared with and without the granulated Edge inoculant, it’s easy to see why. There’s mould, damp and fungus riddled through the untreated feed, and that which has been treated

appears fresh-cut, even after a season under wraps. Other local farmers are equally enthusiastic. “We used Edge for the first time over the 2020/21 season, and we’d certainly use it again,” says Garry Wilson, an early adopter of the new, all-natural inoculant. “We opened the bales the other day, and there were two big differences. One, they were cold, there was no decomposition heat. Two, they were a golden brown colour. The upshot is, the cattle aren’t leaving anything behind at all. There was nothing left in the paddock after feeding.”

Lawrence Agriculture is helping pioneer the new, inexpensive Edge inoculant system, with delivery machinery fitted to this harvester

Edge is usable in bales, which are just 25 per cent dry matter. It works by killing off mould and then dropping the pH to under four inside the feed using ‘good bacteria’. The upshot is no more mouldy, sub-par feed which cattle don’t want to eat, and that does little good for their complex digestive system. Instead, winter feed becomes more appealing to the herd, with better results for their health, wellbeing and productivity. Farmers report feed-out troughs literally licked clean. It also works with hay, reducing the dust that comes from dried out mould spores.

Edge is delivered during the harvest process, via a small mechanised box attached to the harvesting machinery. It’s effective across all kinds of silage and helps farmers get the most out of their feed in all kinds of conditions. It can be capitalised on by stopping mould and fungus from breaking down its valuable glucose and fibre. You can catch up with the Edge team at the forthcoming Northland Field Days; right next to the barbecue tent, says Michael, so that farmers can enjoy a good feed while discussing good feed for their livestock!

When it comes to emissions from dairy cattle, New Zealand leads the world. Not in the volume of greenhouse gases produced, but quite the opposite, according to a recent report by AgResearch. The accepted measure of the environmental impact from dairying records the amount of carbon dioxide or its equivalent (CO2e) released for every kilogram of ‘fat and protein corrected’ milk (FPCM). Hence, a low score for ‘CO2e per kilo of FPCM’ is desirable. AgResearch’s analysis proves that for 2020, New Zealand dairy farmers had the world’s lowest carbon footprint — at nearly half the emissions of other international producers. This is a long way from the assurances of climate armageddon via farming which were touted in the not so distant past by opponents to the dairy industry. The exact figure sits at 0.74kg per kilo FPCM, with the average across all recorded dairy producers confirmed as 1.37kg per kilo FPCM. New Zealand farmers beat out most of our European rivals in agriculture convincingly, with a total less than half that of the CO2e emissions recorded in places like Germany and Italy. The United States and Canada were also beaten by a wide margin, with the countries faring worst in the poll being those with limited modern infrastructure or challenging terrain and conditions; Peru, Costa Rica and Kenya are examples of these. AgResearch scientists Andre Mazzetto and Stewart Ledgard followed exacting International Organisation for Standardisation rules to come up with these figures, providing an insight

into our progress in better farming practices. “We reviewed international studies and recalculated their footprints in a systematic way, using methods accepted internationally to provide a fair and robust comparison between different countries,” Mazzetto is quoted as saying. “Bearing in mind, countries may have different emission profiles and different ways of calculating their footprints for milk production, we believe we have reached the best possible comparison from the data available.” He concurred that there was still room

for us to perform even better, as other nations on the list work to reduce their own emissions footprints and new technologies become available.

Water supply projects building by Andy Bryenton

As summer water restrictions bite down across the north, it’s good to know that this year major infrastructure projects are underway to alleviate the worst of nature’s dry spells in the future. Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust is working to fix the problem of high winter and autumn rainfall but dry arid summers, with the help of a grant from the Provincial Growth Fund, which came through before election 2020, and is now put to work constructing two reservoir systems. One will be sited near Te Kopuru in the Pouto area, the other in Kaikohe. Work has already begun on both, with the first ground turned late last year to begin work on the Kaikohe reservoir, named Matawii. It is planned to be a 750,000 cubic metre water storage reservoir near Kaikohe, in the vicinity of the new Ngawha enterprise zone. It is expected to be up and running by the end of this year. The first sod was turned by then Regional Development Minister Shane Jones. Still, the change of government has not slowed the work, largely due to its clear agricultural importance. Trust chair Murray McCully said that combined, the schemes would allow

for up to 7,000ha of new horticultural development within Northland, as well as be available to bolster existing municipal supply. “We are all acutely aware of the problems faced in the north through water scarcity. Construction of the Matawii reservoir is the first step in a larger water storage scheme that represents a once in a lifetime transformational opportunity for Tai Tokerau,” McCully said. This more reliable water supply will allow landowners to plan and implement future land-use change with greater confidence. These changes may well

include more profitable farming options such as kiwifruit and berry fruit crops; even coffee and other exotic high yield crops have been discussed. In Te Kopuru, where a second reservoir is planned, an experimental boom irrigator has been installed to explore options for delivering ideal conditions for these more cash-dense options. Economic analysis had indicated provision of the water storage schemes could generate an increase in economic activity of $67 million per annum in the Mid North and $83 million in the Kaipara. It could create up to 880 new jobs across both regions.

Help offered for community gardens The owners of a rural lifestyle mowing and property care company headed for Whangarei wondered how best they could bless the communities they were coming to. Doug and Yvonne Vause have lived among people where guests should always bring a gift, and it took a dream to learn just what. In the dream, Doug found himself going around marae, footy clubs, schools and community spaces using a large rotary hoe to freshen ground for garden plots and large community gardens. He was also using his tractor’s tough cut mower to clean up urupa to make it easier for whanau to keep these sites mown and tidy. Doug and Yvonne have a long history of pastoring and overseas mission work and have visited many marae around Northland. It was on leaving a marae back in early 2009 Doug felt God call him ‘To the North’ and thankfully, Yvonne agreed. She’s of Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa descent. Subsequently, they bought their Kamo property, but it was the mid-year dream that convinced Doug that now was the time to sell their Auckland business and move north. To advertise their start-up rural lifestyle mowing and property care business they’ve taken space in the upcoming Northern Home & Lifestyle Show at McKay Stadium and a stand at Dargaville’s Northland Field days in March. At these events, community groups, sports clubs, schools, marae or even large families are welcome to register

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

It’s a well-known fact that soil health is affected by compaction, both from animal pugging and the action of today’s large, heavy agricultural machines. Now tyre manufacturers and engineers are working to turn this around. Soil is a complex mixture of solid minerals and organic components, interspersed with water, air and living organisms. When a tractor or implement weighs down on this structure, the gaps close up, expelling the life-giving water and oxygen, which help good bacteria and soil microbes thrive. There’s even the chance that the roots of plants will have to divert around compacted clumps, expending the energy of the plant that you’d rather went into saleable crops. On modern farms around the world, yield losses due to compaction are roughly 20%. It can even reach 50% in certain cases, such as areas with damp loam or a clay-based soil structure. That’s a significant financial setback, so tyre and tractor manufacturers have been hard at work to rectify the issue and provide smart solutions. One example comes from a recent British initiative on soil health and compaction. Richard Hutchins, an agricultural tyre specialist at Continental, David Purdy, from John Deere, and soil scientist, John Williams, joined forces to highlight how farming practices must change to protect productivity. Mr Williams

suggested that up to 30% of soils in the UK are severely degraded. “Where soils have been placed in this category, there is very little porosity, and the soil has become grey and compacted, making it difficult for crops to root and for the land to drain,” he explained. Continental Tyres has found a way to offset compaction damage through tyre technology. Their new, very high flexion (VF) tyres with a single bead wire are more flexible and can be run at lower

pressures. VF tyres carry 40% more load than a standard tyre at the same pressure. Alternatively, in the field, the pressure of VF tyres can be lowered by 40% compared to standard tyres, even when carrying the same load. That spreads the weight of the vehicle over a larger surface area and reduces soil compaction. Meanwhile, manufacturers of tractors and implements are experimenting with materials technology to craft lighter, more soil friendly implements and tractors.

Health and safety online by Andy Bryenton

It can be one of the biggest headaches for the modern farmer; the Byzantine world of health and safety management presents new rules on a regular basis, with some that seem to defy the concept of common sense. It can seem like a herculean task to keep visitors to your property safe enough to meet the strict modern standards. When there’s a partnership between agricultural contractors and landowners involving heavy machinery on the land, the issues can multiply. Efficient management of this paperwork storm is available through many popular apps to prevent a total overload, but with so many on the market, which one is best for you? Aside from cost, or lack thereof, (one local health and safety app for rural environments, Zero Harm Farm, went out free to rural not-for-profits back in 2018), the prime check-boxes to tick involve ease of use, customer support, compatibility with your other information technology systems, and that good old standard — word of mouth feedback from farming friends and neighbours. In a market with many options, some even carried by major rural supply companies you may already be partnered up with, it pays to be

integrated. For example, talk to your agricultural contractors and see if you can get on the same app platform for better collaboration. Otherwise, the rules for picking the right app boil down to the same simple considerations which underlie regular health and safety thinking. Does the app let you clearly identify all significant hazards on your farm, and then offer options to either eliminate or isolate them, while tracking these actions for the benefit of potential visitors and co-workers? Does the app provide an easier way to monitor hazards, thus minimising their potential to cause harm, and if it does so, is it in real-time with pertinent alerts about changing circumstances or specific jobs? Perhaps most importantly, is the method the app used to help you record data easy to use, uncluttered and streamlined? If you’re new to making the change, it pays to look at several options, and have a good look at the in-depth and

Health and Safety have gone mobile, reducing paperwork and stress. However, which app to choose for greatest ease and peace of mind?

long-term data management available from each product. No doubt, apps like these are the way of the future. It’s all

about picking one you are comfortable with to manage an important part of your business.

ADVERTORIAL

Husqvarna’s star in the north by Andy Bryenton

While Husqvarna owners in the brand’s home country are out there using their chainsaws for winter firewood, we’re enjoying a long hot summer in New Zealand. Nowhere more so than in the Far North, where Kaikohe Lawnmowers and Chainsaws is the home of Husqvarna’s extensive range. The big orange brand is just one of the many forms of machinery that the team here counts amid their areas of expertise. As one can imagine from the name, Kaikohe Lawnmowers and Chainsaws is the cornerstone of yard care and outdoor power sales and service in the ‘top end’ of New Zealand, helping keep properties tidy, lifestyle blocks orderly and farms in top shape. Adding Husqvarna to the mix was a logical choice for this 26-year strong local business, who have built a reputation for hand-picking quality. In a town that serves a thriving rural sector, many of Kaikohe Lawnmowers and Chainsaws’ customers are likely to have a working farm as a classic quarter acre. However, for jobs big or small, reliability is just as important. The smallengine know-how of Husqvarna provides the perfect solution to slicing through rough overgrowth as summer turns to autumn. Brushcutters and trimmers are on the minds of many as the season begins to turn, and it’s time to clear up scrubby or otherwise wasteful land. Husqvarna offers many advantages in its brush cutter and trimmer range. However, as most folks who have worked on the end of one of these

Why forge ahead with an old, unreliable brush cutter or trimmer when you can face the new season with Husqvarna’s legendary power and performance

machines will tell you, the core issues are handling and weight. Husqvarna has gone out of their way to make their machines weigh less and transmit less vibration from a smoother motor down to the cutting head. That means less string on the tendons in your wrists and

hands. Large, chunky grips and welldesigned articulated harnesses for the larger models mean it’s easy to put the edge where it’s needed. Not just more efficient, but safer, too. Husqvarna’s x-torq engines produce 75 per cent less carbon for 20 per cent better fuel

economy. Then there’s the new world of battery power to try out as well. To chop, prune, trim, slice, mow and cut your outdoor chores down to size, talk to the team at Kaikohe Lawnmowers and Chainsaws soon, and experience the Husqvarna difference.

BUSINESS PROFILE

X Span for quality sheds After a lifetime of selling rural real estate, largely in Northland, and assisting many farmers to buy and sell rural land over a period spanning five decades, Mel Currin decided to hang up his real estate banner and retire. Living in Northland, Mel has a large team of his family strongly involved in the building industry. This included two sons and three grandsons — four of whom are Licensed Building Practitioners. In August last year, unable to accept retirement, Mel purchased the total franchised area of Northland from the Dome Valley to Cape Reinga for what are commonly known as the best steel sheds available — X Span steel sheds. Currently, with Mel at the helm, his daughter running the office domain, and both sons having grandson teams under them, Mel believes he can give the best possible service, product and quality control from the enquiry to the coal face. “X Span sheds are 100 per cent built from New Zealand steel and are very quick to assemble,” he says. “Having spent many years on Northland farms, I have seen massive amounts of very expensive equipment and machinery rusting and rotting away at an alarming rate. “We can span up to 27 metres without any inside posts, which is excellent for farmers and contractors who are moving large machinery around inside the shed.” X Span manufactures storage sheds, domestic sheds and garages, heritage

barns, cow-houses, covers, arenas and all types of rural and commercial sheds. Included for consent purposes, each shed, no matter how large or small, comes complete with a pre-engineered design certificate. “Our very own K5S knee bracket (fully Branz approved) is the secret to being able to span such long distances. To date, the largest building we have currently under construction is a massive 953 square metres. Subject to some criteria under the present building

Two prestigious titles Tom and Francesca Bennett, from Te Hau Holsteins, took out two prestigious titles at the New Zealand Dairy Event recently. The Bennetts had both the best Holstein Friesian cow at the event and Tom also took out the World Wide Sires and All Breeds Junior Judging Competition. The family was also named Premier Holstein Friesian Exhibitor. “It was awesome, I did the Pitcairns Trophy judging competition at the Waikato Show and came second, but Dairy Event was my first really big judging competition to win,” says Tom. Cattle judges undergo rigorous training to ensure they can not only pick a good animal but can also justify their reasonings behind it. Tom says that was the most challenging aspect of the competition. “You have all these senior judges around the ring, and I have never been

one for public speaking. I know in myself what I think is a good cow but articulating that can be difficult.” The Bennett’s six-year-old cow won both the Supreme Holstein Friesian Championship and the All Breeds Senior In-Milk Reserve Champion. “Te Hau Windbrook Cleo EX was 10 years in the making. We weren’t even sure if she was going to make the Dairy Event after she calved in April with a large set of twins that knocked her back a bit,” says Francesca. “I was given Cleo’s dam, Tronnoco Talent Carla, as a 21st present by my mother, Linda. Mum bought Carla at the Canterbury Collection sale, we showed her a bit, and she did really well.” The 2021 Junior Holstein Friesian

Managing farm effluent Good effluent management is a combination of having a well-designed effluent system and processes for people that make sure the effluent the system collects is applied to pasture in the right amount at the right time. According to DairyNZ, on-farm benefits of good effluent management include fertiliser savings, improved soil condition, prevention of animal-health issues and compliance with council rules or resource consent. DairyNZ says the key to good decision making is understanding the soil water deficit. It is essential to prevent ponding and run-off and to avoid applying effluent to saturated soils. Soil water deficit is the amount of water which can be applied to the soil before it reaches field capacity. It refers to the amount of water held in the soil after excess water has drained away. If effluent is added at field capacity, it will likely result in ponding, run-off or leaching. New Zealand’s dairy farm systems produce large quantities of nutrient-rich effluent captured from milking sheds, holding yards, feed pads, standoff pads, and animal shelters. The average dairy cow produces about $25 worth of nutrients annually as farm dairy effluent. For a 400 cow dairy herd, this represents about $10,000 of nutrients annually. Using effluent to supplement fertiliser presents an opportunity to capitalise on a cost-effective nutrient resource while improving whole farm nutrient use efficiency. Effluent is commonly grouped into three broad categories based on dry matter content: liquids, slurries and solids. Application of effluents is typically via land. The DairyNZ Farm Dairy Effluent Spreading Calculator (app or Excel spreadsheet) allows farmers to easily calculate nutrient loadings and application rates for dairy effluent based

on a number of customisable inputs. That means that farmers can manage the application of their effluent nutrients with greater precision. There are two calculators in this app, the Quick Calculator, which is for spray irrigation systems such as travelling irrigators and sprinklers, and an Advanced Calculator for slurry tankers and muck spreaders. It is also available as an excel spreadsheet if you prefer to use your computer. For more information, go to dairynz. co.nz/environment/effluent/managingand-operating-effluent-systems.

Farmers confidence risen

Farmer confidence has bounced back to where it was preCovid-19 but attracting and retaining staff remains a headache, the latest Federated Farmers Farm Confidence Survey shows. Of the nearly 1,100 farmers who completed the Research First survey in the second week of January, a net 5.5 per cent considered current economic conditions to be good. That is a 34-point jump from the July 2020 survey when a net 28.6 per cent considered them bad, marking the lowest level of farmer confidence in the 12 years the six-monthly survey had been conducted. “Looking ahead, a net 43.8 per cent expect general economic conditions to worsen over the next 12 months.

That sounds a bit grim, but just six months ago, 58.7 per cent of survey respondents expected a deteriorating economy,” said Federated Farmers president and commerce spokesperson Andrew Hoggard. “I think farmers, like other New Zealanders, are feeling buoyed by the way we have handled the pandemic despite the torpedo to international tourism. The agricultural sector is willing and able to maintain production so long as regulatory and other stumbling blocks don’t trip us up.”

The January survey showed the three greatest current concerns for farmers are regulation and compliance, (chosen by 18.0 per cent of respondents), followed by freshwater policy (16.7 per cent) and climate change policy (13.6 per cent). “This questionnaire went out before the recent announcements by the Climate Change Commission. As the impacts of the draft emissions budgets, and the government’s reaction to them, become clearer, it will be interesting to see the results of our next survey in July.”

A net 35.8 per cent of respondents reported it has been harder to recruit skilled and motivated staff, an eightpoint increase from July 2020 when a net 28.1 per cent reported it has been harder. “Consistent with recent commodity price movements, the improvement in farmer confidence was particularly strong for dairy farmers, with other farming groups more cautious about current conditions and less optimistic about future conditions. Farmers seem most confident in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty region.”

Kennels of quality with JEL JEL Kennels 2020 is under new ownership with Mike and Karen Stuart looking forward to building a positive future and improving the systems of the dog kennels the company produces. “We took over JEL Kennels 2020 prior to Covid. Michael has an engineering and farming background, and I come from a farming background,” says Karen. “We have made a lot of great changes to our kennel designs. Made from steel and wood, they are available in one to four bays. We also custom make for specific needs. Each steel kennel is made of DuraGal steel with etched priming and a hardened coat, or we have the fully galvanised dipped option. “They are fully insulated with double wrapping in the roof. This keeps the kennel warm in winter and cool in summer. There are flashings around the top with a spouting at the back draining the water to the side. They have galvanised self-watering systems with four adjustable heights in 100ml increments. “There are no sharp edges, and every purchase comes with a maintenance programme to help with the longevity of the building. We manufacture one to four bays and can custom-make to your requirements. “The kennels are easy to clean, and our qualified team produce orders very quickly. Dogs are loving them. We have

Delivering the goods by Andy Bryenton

There are plenty of small SUVs out there which look great on paper and even better in front of your favourite cafe. But some might struggle with the primary job of a proper sports utility. The Suzuki S-Cross provides an answer. Take the basic purpose of the original off-road machine and unpack it. If we wind the clock back to the dawn of the offroader, when the idea of a car that didn’t need tarmac had just been crossed off the army’s list of top-secret concepts, we find beasts like the Range Rover, the early Land Cruiser and the Waggoneer. Their brief was simple. ‘Contain a whole lot of people and materials, then deliver them safely to anywhere on the map that was flat enough to sustain fourwheeled traction’. In the rush for everything to become an SUV, some manufacturers have lost sight of that. Sloping rear rooflines, luxury interiors, tons of gadgets and trick front-wheel-drive differentials have diluted the old-fashioned plan. That’s fine if what you really want is a bigger, beefier estate car. But right in the middle of Suzuki’s new S-Cross range sits a machine that just clicks into the right parameters. Suzuki can do small and off-road like nearly no one else; check out the Jimny, or the old Escudo two-door. The S-Cross, however, is that rare thing, a small SUV that’s tidy, well appointed, and can fit a vast, cavernous amount of stuff while actually

AWD S-Cross features proper four-wheel drive, tons of space and safety features the big, expensive SUVs of the not too distant past would be envious of

handling surfaces that aren’t council maintained. First up, space. Even packed with 5 adults, there are 440 litres of boot space to play with. Double it up to close to a solid cubic metre by folding the seats flat. That’s versatile. Then there’s the AWD system fitted to the 4X4 S-Cross variant. A dial with different modes for different surfaces used to be Range Rover level luxury and tech. Now it’s standard on this sub-$34k machine that, coincidentally, gets along on only 6.3 litres per 100km. Electronic stability, advanced antilock brakes and

seven airbags add to its 5-star safety rating, too. Suzuki might not make the biggest and most powerful off-roaders, but it does make some very cool, very well specced machines for a very nice price. The S-Cross AWD loses the cute and chunky appeal of the Ignis or the Jimny, but replaces it with a more accessible, smooth design and a ton of practicality. In a world of crossovers that are effectively a replacement for the people mover or station wagon, it has both sport and utility credentials.

New model arrives soon for the smaller lawn... and a small price!

Every day is different and helping farmers is a big part of my job. I enjoy meeting new people and learning about their different backgrounds and helping come up with solutions to problems. “I have been in the hose industry for three years but have had a career in the automotive industry for more than 20 years. My work takes me from Hikurangi to the Far North. “I fix anything to do with hoses and recommend people get their equipment checked annually and to service air

conditioning units in the winter as summer gets very busy. “Most people call me when their air conditioning has stopped working, but that is a bad time as that is when it costs money. I suggest you get maintenance done on air conditioning units every two years to keep it in good condition and other hoses should be checked regularly to avoid extra expense and downtime.” Dan recommends calling him when a hose starts to perforate rather than when it is beyond repair. “Getting out on the water in the boat is a good downtime for farmers, and I can help with fridges that stop working and other aspects. If your boat has hydraulic hoses, I am happy to check them for you as well.

Outback to the future When Subaru first showed the world their idea for the Outback, people could be forgiven for looking at what was clearly a Legacy station wagon and asking why it was named after one of the toughest environments on the planet. Subaru Outback returns for 2021 with more of everything that made it superb in the first place; except it’s stealthy station wagon disguise

there’s a wealth of gadgets from safety monitoring devices to entertainment systems, all cleverly integrated. It’s safe to say that you get more for your money from the new Outback; it’s simply more car. They’ve even kept the fun intact, with eight-speed manual mode available via the paddle-shift transmission, and optional set and forget throttle control for extreme grip in snow, slush, mud and gravel. The only thing is, it’s now an SUV. Not that there’s anything wrong with it as

a result; it’s one of the better-looking sports utilities out there. It’s just that, in a world where everything aspires to be a variant on the SUV theme, it would be great to once again see the Outback as the sure-footed mountain goat in wolf’s clothing that it once was. A stealth wagon which could put poser tractors to shame. More than anything, it would be different, and that, in a sea of imitations, is something you can almost no longer pay for.

Effectively, what Subaru had crafted was a modern homage to another legendarily tough wagon, Peugeot’s 505 Africa. This was a car that delivered fourwheel drive in a practical, bring-the-family package, with the simplicity to repair any faults by the side of a dirt road in the desert. Subaru touted their Outback as the world’s first such sports utility wagon, and though they may have been pipped by the French, theirs was the first to take over the developed world. In a way, it was a rejection of the trend that’s still with us today; that everything needs to be an SUV. Subaru proved, with their higher, beefier, more powerful station wagon, that the old estate shape was as understated and cool as it ever was, and that it could go places many latter-day faux-wheel-drives could not. Fast forward to today, on the eve of Subaru debuting what they’re calling the ‘greatest Outback of all time’. They might have a point when it comes to the tale on paper; the new machine sports a brand new 2.5-litre boxer engine with 138kW and 243Nm of torque, both up on the previous model. The cabin is more spacious, the wheelbase longer, the track wider for more stability, and

Balanced act to follow by Andy Bryenton

The big new Rav 4 from Toyota has reached the same point on the expanding vehicle graph as BMW’s 3 series; the point where a new, smaller vehicle has to slot into the line-up beneath it, right where its predecessor used to fit. That is no bad thing for what has been one of New Zealand’s favourite SUVs of all time, combining the cachet of Hilux and Land Cruiser invincibility with a dose of family-sized practicality. A fair few out there will remember that the first generation RAV 4, with its chunky plastic bump guards and its cheeky styling, was criticised for some for coming with a two-wheel-drive option. Now crossovers are the norm, and that first RAV looks a bit prophetic. Still, enough of the past. With the effervescently styled CH-R nipping at its bumpers, the new RAV 4 is pointed directly at the future, with styling that delivers a grown-up, assured stance to the fifth-generation machine. They’ve finally decided what to do with the front treatment, and it’s a winner, as is the intuitive and spacious cabin layout, with everything exactly where you think it should be. Big, chunky dials, big, chunky screen and big, relaxing legroom in the back make for a good combination. There are options under the hood and indeed, for the drivetrain, but

the standout in the range has to be the 2.5-litre petrol hybrid. Toyota has experience with this setup, as it was first floated in the top of the line Lexus H series hybrids 10 years ago. Improvements since then have seen fuel efficiency hit 4.8 litres for each 100km. You’ll also get a handy 131 kilowatts of power and 221Nm of torque, but the RAV-4’s party piece is not how much it churns out. Rather, it’s how it deploys the power at its disposal. Key to this is the E-Four all-wheeldrive system, which sends instant electric power to the rear wheels when accelerating or crossing difficult terrain. Hill climbs and takeoffs in wet or slippery conditions are made a whole lot easier by this new system, and it reduces understeer during cornering too. The RAV-4 has been a favourite for many years, and perhaps those with an original model should hang onto it as well as upgrading. After all, a 1986 Sprinter just sold in Japan for $95,000; Toyota is well on its way to becoming a Japanese marque with proper classic status.

ADVERTORIAL

Passing the toughest tests Prolan’s new lanolin ‘Extreme’ product is proving to be a successful natural rust protection solution for some of the toughest testing grounds around to protect equipment and machinery exposed to fertiliser, sand, salt and mud. Local Ashburton company Green Fertiliser Spreading director, Darren Green says: “It’s fantastic! I always had an A+ rating at the vehicle testing station without it. Now, they want to give me a higher rating”. The Extreme product is new in the Prolan range manufactured in New Zealand using sheep’s wool lanolin. It was initially developed for the Danish offshore turbine windmill industry as long-term natural rust protection with a less tacky finish. Extreme has proved itself as once applied it stays on and protects in harsh environments, reducing maintenance costs, and at the same time, it ticks the boxes for environmental friendliness. Closer to home in New Zealand the product has proved successful in the fight against corrosion for the Ninety Mile Beach spat farming industry. Loaders are coated to prevent corrosion from a harsh salt-water environment. Vehicles can be water blasted after the vehicle has been exposed to beach conditions and the Prolan product stays on. Operators recommend a Prolan coating as a crucial part of their maintenance programme, reducing downtime in maintenance and component replacement with improved

WOF and COF pass rates and resale value on machinery. Rust is an everpresent problem. Prolan is effective in shutting off the supply of oxygen to a surface. It can be used on areas where existing rust is present and prevents it going any further. The preparation time is minimal. The surface needs to be clean and dry. For example, a used vehicle chassis may require a quick water blast and wire brush over flaky rust. The Prolan can then be applied straight on to the surface. Prolan Extreme is perfect as a coating for vehicle chassis — 4WDs, trucks, motorhomes, loaders, fertiliser spreaders; horticultural tractors spray equipment, bridges or marine applications. The product is easily applied using a trigger pack, airless spray gun or garden sprayer for smaller areas; it is also available in an aerosol form. A one-litre of Prolan covers 8–10 square metres; so a four-litre tin will cater for a five-metre truck chassis. Prolan is made in New Zealand by Kiwis using a by-product of the wool industry and adding extra value to an already environmentally friendly product with multiple benefits. Try Sheep n a Can today!

New life for old batteries on show “Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated, and sulphation reduces charge holding capacity and eventually kills batteries,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. After 21 years on the market in New Zealand, the ex-farmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because it is often too late by then so the earlier you treat them, the less damage is done and the longer batteries will go. “Our record used to be 18 years, and we have had a good 30 of those in the last year or two,” says Anselmi. “However, it was very nice to get a call from Rick Ashley in Katikati who said, and I quote: ‘Having owned and operated garages for the last 40 years, I believe I know a good product when I use one. I have used RECHARGE in batteries on many occasions with impressive results. From bringing them back to life and as periodic cleansing every two years. My own vehicle of 2001 vintage has the original battery still going strong to this day This has been verified by two battery dealers. RECHARGE is an awesome product.’ Rick Ashley, RJ Automotive, Katikati, Bay of Plenty. “Lead-acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up and a RECHARGE treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those

sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons,” says Anselmi. “We are effectively re-aciding the battery with a chemical reaction, maximising battery charge holding capacity, preventing lead corrosion and premature battery failure.” With Covid cutting out the Australian shows Gerard will be at the Northland Field Days again this year on site 177-B, or you can purchase the two-litre online. The two-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries, so about $7 to treat an N-70zz. Please visit our website recharge.net.nz for more information. RECHARGE is also available at some Farmlands stores, but unfortunately, not all due to freight costs. Moreover, yes, you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell treating and resealing with sika-flex auto, polyurethane windscreen sealant, is best. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like fork hoists, golf carts, scissor hoists and stand-alone power system batteries. Email gerard@ recharge.net.nz for more information.

MAXIMUM BATTERY PERFORMANCE A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program get 10 years, or often more, out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge occasionally to eliminate the sulphation problem. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, treat, charge and reseal with Sika-Flex Auto or a plastic bung.

Twin turbo express by Andy Bryenton

There are now so many variants of the Ford Ranger that it’s hard to pick a favourite. New Zealand’s number one vehicle five years running has all kinds of options, from the rugged farmer’s workmate to the sophisticated city cruiser. New on the menu is a version which sits between the XLT and the Wildtrak in terms of trim and finish, but which boasts a couple of new technological tricks under the hood to deliver a smooth driving experience. Ranger first came to the public’s attention for being the first on the ‘one tonners’ to drive like a car, a trick it shares with Ford’s genre-changing Transit Custom vans. The new FX4 may lose a little in terms of displacement, but it’s a masterclass of why you would not let what’s on paper dissuade you from a test drive. Like that other very successful Ford which went through many variants (the Mustang), the FX4 Ranger doesn’t want to shout about its 2.0-litre engine, as there are still many out there who think displacement is the biggest factor in a vehicle’s makeup. Twin turbos, though; that’s a fact to be proud of, and the system deployed on the FX4 manages to work its magic much like the forced induction on Ford’s smaller, spicier hatchbacks, delivering a lag-free surge that can power the big ute up to 100km/h in just 9 seconds. You’ll get 157kW and 500Nm of torque, but once again the tale on paper is not the whole story, as the 2.0-litre

There are many flavours of Ford Ranger to tempt the modern motorist, but the new FX4 fits a niche in terms of pure driving response

engine up front is mated to a ten-speed auto box, ensuring that you’re always in the right gear. That smooth and seamless synchronisation of the cogs works with the turbo feel and the smooth ride to make the FX4 seem effortless and very un-truck-like. Combine this with

the fact that the smaller two-litre mill is lighter than the alternative five-cylinder, and you get less weight in the nose for more responsive handling. There’s a Ranger for all sorts and all walks of life, but if you were impressed by the Raptor’s drivetrain, or you simply

want a versatile ute with even more carlike manners than the usual XLT, then the FX4 might be for you. Check it out at Northland’s field days, and forget comparisons of power and displacement on paper; feel it through your hands on the wheel.
