The devastating Port Hills fire last summer showed how much indiscriminate and widespread damage a rural fire can inflict. Fighting these fires is dangerous and expensive. Predictions of drier summers point to a growing hazard. The risk is greatly reduced though, if you check out the local rules for lighting a fire – ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’. At different places, at different times, there will be complete fire bans. Or, you might be able to light a fire with a permit. Or, there might be no permit necessary. You need a clear area for the fire. Make sure you can, and do, put it out before you leave. So, ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’ www.checkitsalright.nz

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Just the berries by Ann Morgan

Growing raspberries, blackberries and kiwifruit on their 30 hectare orchard in Maungatapere is not just a lifestyle to the Malley family but a way to provide employment and education opportunities for others.

L

inzi and Dermott Malley purchased the property in 2011 — their son Patrick and his wife Rebecca returned from the United Kingdom to join them with the orchard project in January 2012. “The proper ty was par tially established and we then applied ourselves to establishing kiwifruit and made small, yet very important changes to how we were caring for our orchard,” says Patrick. “We use mostly biological sprays and focus on sustainability by controlling our irrigation use efficiently, applying compost, and planting comfrey and other plants to control weeds. “In 2015 we decided to start producing hydroponic berries and harvested our first crop in March 2016. We seized an opportunity that came our way — it helps keep our staff employed and creates many full-time jobs for local

people which is why we also work for other orchards.” They hire approximately 45 full-time employees and this increases to 100120 from November to June. “The first part of the project was a massive punt for us but we are confident and took the opportunity to continue growing at the same rate.” The family grow the raspberries and blackberries under plastic tunnels as this allows them to focus on nutritional value and adapt the environment to suit each plant. “This gives us a good fruit quality outcome and we can remove wind, rain and other elements from the harvest. “Having different crops diversifies our risks as a horticulture operation although it is a challenge to grow berries in the region. I love eating the fruit and if you genuinely love something what better thing is there than to do it every

day. “We supply our berries nationwide under our Maungatapere Berries brand, and the majority of our kiwifruit are exported with Zespri. “We have a strong focus on sustainability and mostly follow an

organic programme with biological opportunities to control pests and diseases. We set traps for some of the moths we could potentially have issues with.” Some moths are territorial and fake moths are on display to deter the pests entering into the growing tunnels. “We use as many organic controls as we can and are constantly experimenting to be able to become spray free. Focusing on nutritional value, the family grow their berries under plastic tunnels

order to ensure the berries grow well. If you have an irrigation problem you can lose all your plants in two days. “It is not an industry that suits everyone as things can go very wrong very quickly. It is part of the risk we take but the thing that validates us is the satisfaction of doing a good job. “Our company vision is to build an enduring diversified agricultural business for Northland and do well for our consumers and dedicated staff for many years to come. “We believe in investing in our staff as this will ultimately benefit everyone in the future. We focus on employing and upskilling locals and this has been very positive. We have helped many people with education programmes through Education Unlimited.”

Some workers are getting training with numeracy and literacy skills and others are learning budgeting. They also get a greater understanding of how a business is run. “Contracting and providing services to other growers for their orchards means everyone is helping everyone and part of the reason we do this is to ensure our staff are busy. “We have a strong belief that you need to continue to challenge yourself — if you rest on your laurels someone will overtake you, so to be the best you need to measure yourself with fellow industry partners and what better way to do that than entering food in NZ Food awards.” The family were finalists in this year’s NZ Food awards.

Patrick uses as many organic controls as possible throughout the orchard

Patrick also started a small hor ticultural software company named Dataphyll — focussing on providing leading edge traceability and productivity management software to the horticultural industry. He has been using the software in their berry operation for several years allowing them to easily manage staff timekeeping and performance, whilst

providing excellent traceability from the field to the packhouse. “We have worked with some major horticultural companies including T&G Global, and recently won the Innovation Award at the Northland Business Excellence awards. “As a family we are really excited about what the future might bring. We are proud to be able to help others the way we do — it is important to us.”

Restoring the by Ann Morgan

Babydoll sheep are a heritage breed from England originally known as the Southdown with records showing their existence in the early 1800s. Family photos – Sarah Marshall Photography

F

iona and Luke Goodin are veterinarians working at the Kamo Vet clinic and discovered the breed whilst investigating a small sized animal for their 15 acre lifestyle property. “We used to breed White Galloways but could only keep a small number of breeding cattle on our property,” says Fiona. “We tried Suffolk sheep but they ate the trees in our orchards. We discovered that winemaker Peter Yealands is using Babydolls around his grapevines and other people have them on organic properties and orchards to keep the

grass down around trees. Peter has been breeding the sheep and now has about 1,500. There are a few other small flocks around the country.” The Babydolls look miniature and are between 18-24 inches at the shoulder. “They can be black or white with a darker colour on their legs like they have little brown leg warmers on. “When refrigeration came along and it was possible to store meat for longer, bigger carcasses became favourable so the original small Southdowns were bred to become the larger Southdown we know today.”

Luke and Fiona Goodin have chosen to breed Babydoll sheep because of their ideal small size to re-establish the breed 12

In the late 1980s an American man, Robert Mock, went on a mission to find all the remaining small type Southdowns to restore the original breed. After four years he found 350 and a registry was formed and they were named the ‘Olde English Babydoll Southdowns’. “There are not many of the heritage breed in New Zealand, they are all from Australian genetics. Up until the end of 2016 you could only import sheep material from Australia. The timing of England being opened up for imports was perfect for the venture,” says Fiona. They imported embryos from the United Kingdom and used surrogate sheep to implant them in. It took two rounds of collecting as in the first round only nine were gathered. The second round produced another 48. “The breeder in the UK did a massive amount of work for us collecting the embryos and we are grateful for the opportunity she has given us to bring some new genetics here. “We used Animal Breeding Services to surgically implant 52 embryos into 29 recipients. They set up a surgery and laboratory in our friend’s woolshed with portable equipment. They thaw the embryos as they go and only used the viable healthy ones — it was fascinating to see them work. “We produced 14 lambs — that was a lot lower than we expected but we ended up with nine ewes and five rams 1 24/11/15 and all ofnewsad-11-2015-FINAL.pdf the genetics we imported are

2

3

represented so we can breed within our flock.” Babydolls have very fine wool which has the same microns as cashmere. “It has more barbs per inch than other wool and is popular for crafting and blending different types of fibre together. “For lifestyle block owners these sheep are relatively easy but they do need more care than a cow. They need to be drenched, vaccinated and shorn, and their feet checked occasionally but they are all skills you can easily learn.” A vet will do the drenching, vaccinating, and feet for you, or a mobile shearer will often offer that service. “When you have any livestock you need a facility to do these things such as yards or a pen to contain them in. No matter how friendly your animals are they won’t stand there whilst these jobs are done.” Fiona and Luke are excited to be a part of the re-establishment of a relatively new breed. “It will take at least two years to get a decent size breeding flock so we can sell our excess lambs and we will import semen to keep the genetics diverse. We plan to breed next year as hoggets with a genetically suitable ram and the year after do another round of embryo transfer and a natural round to build up our numbers. “They are great mothers and are efficient with the grass, that is one reason we chose them, so we can have 18:39 a larger flock on our small lifestyle block.

7

Babydolls are often called ‘smiling’ or ‘teddy bear’ sheep due to their natural grin “They are very friendly and have a characteristic smile. They are often called the ‘smiling’ or ‘teddy bear sheep’ because they have a lot of wool around their face and legs which gives them a

5

cute and cuddly appearance. It will be great to share genetics with others as we are all in it for the same reason — to see this loveable heritage breed survive and thrive.”

3 “Looks like it’s going to be a long hot summer.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Anna Harding Nestled at the start of the Tangowahine valley is Heather Carrigan’s flax farm. After working as a florist for years then learning to weave, Heather started her Flax and Fibre business, and can proudly say that she sees her creations through from start to finish.

H

eather and her husband Shawn bought their quarter-acre property after moving from Whangarei. “The only reason I got into weaving was because there’s a beautiful big hedge of really nice weaving flax, that Katie Tito who had owned the property before us, put in. We named it in her honour — Nga Korari O Keita. She was really hesitant to leave it behind, so we told her she could come use it anytime. I have always been one of those people who like to use what’s available to me. So here was this flax,” said Heather. Her son Ace was just over a year old at the time, so she looked online for a weaving course she could do from home.

“I found the Hetet School of Maori Arts. I was the first student — now we’ve ended up with more than 60 here in Dargaville. It’s been really successful to help bring people back to Maori weaving which is what I really feel my role in the arts is — to encourage people to get involved and have a go. “I wanted to study with Veranoa Hetet because there’s tikanga with weaving. I didn’t want to take this on as a hobby. I really wanted to make sure I was respectful and aware of tradition. That’s been a really big part of what we do here.” Though the school she learnt about different types of flax and their uses.

She then came across Lincoln University who have Rene Orchiston’s collection of New Zealand flax cultivars. They sent her genetically tested, pure strain cuttings of the main varieties. There are more than 120 varieties of New Zealand native flax and Heather grows about 25 — mostly suited to making flowers and fine kete. Although Heather has been weaving for a while, it was only around August 2017, that she started Flax and Fibre. Most of her business is based on the internet, but the shop and gallery in front of her house is picking up. “It’s Tangowahine’s first shop in about 50 years. It use to be ‘Smith Butchery’ and it’s the last remaining commercial building left in Tangowahine. “I mainly started it as a place to work and I thought while I’m out there I might as well have the doors open.” The shop also features other artists’ work. “While I like to create, my favourite thing in the world is encouraging other artists, appreciating their work and putting it forward. Which is why this is the perfect thing for me.” To keep up with demand she also has four local employees — Shayna Rusbridge, Cathy Woods, Di Taylor and Gloria Seymour. Gloria has been a florist for years. “When I first moved to Dargaville Gloria was kind enough to let me work in her shop and it’s lovely to be working together again. “Employing people is important to me because it gives something back to the community and introduces more people to the opportunity of working in artistic fields.” From seed, most flax takes about five years to mature. From a cutting it takes about three years. After being cut, a mature flax bush will generally grow

back fast, depending on how much fibre content is in the leaf. The less fibre the faster it grows. Flax like to grow in well drained, fertile soil and generally close to a water source. “We want to make sure that we don’t tax the plant, that we respect the plant life cycle and that it’s not constantly being picked and put under strain. “There is a lot of Maori tradition when it comes to cutting flax, such as not cutting in wet windy conditions as it affects the fibre. Weaving methods vary from weaver to weaver and the sacred knowledge is passed from teacher to student. “Its handed down rather than taken,” said Heather. Heather is also interested in taking the green approach. “We don’t want to use plastic wrap, so are looking at other options like working with local artist Christine Rope who makes paper from rice grass, kumara and flax.” With

big plans for the future, Heather has a landscape designer working on a plan to make the space a tourist attraction. “We want to try and start some kind of tour to show people the flax gardens and how we prepare, dye and make the flowers and kete. It’s really unique to New Zealand — a cultural art form. We’d like to have a homestay as well as some point.” “We’re also about to expand, and will end up with three times as much flax as we have now in the next few years, because if we don’t, we won’t be able to keep up with demand. I’m cutting so much at the moment it’s unbelieveable.”

Keeping horse

AND RIDER SAFE

by Ann Morgan Marijke Lindgreen has been riding horses since she was a young girl and with many years’ experience says road users and horse riders can better share the road by understanding the dangers.

H

er comments follow a National Ride for Road Safety event when hundreds of riders across the country joined forces to bring awareness to motorists and cyclists that if they give a two-metre berth, and pass at 20km/h — as they would with a school bus — they could save a life. “I love riding and my horse is a good friend to me, and as any rider will tell you they become part of your family. There are many disturbing stories of road safety regarding meeting a horse and rider whilst people are out driving.” She said drivers at times have driven close enough for her to touch them with her riding whip.

1

“We enjoy riding our horses as much as other people enjoy their bicycles, vintage cars or motorbikes, but people don’t realise simply slowing down and giving us two metres can save lives, including the people in vehicles.” A horse can weigh 500kg and a spooked or injured horse can jump through the windscreen or on the roof of a car, and cyclists and motorcyclists are also at risk. “If you are approaching on a motorbike, in a truck or with a trailer in tow, the noise can spook a horse and it can bolt sideways with fright. Slowing down gives us a safety barrier to work in.”

A rider will signal for traffic to slow down if necessary for various reasons such as a learner rider being present

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES January 2018

She says with more city people relocating to rural areas education of country roads is important. “Younger people are also learning to ride on country roads as well as drive on them. It is the same when you approach a herd of cattle or sheep being moved on the road. Slow down — all animals can get a fright.” Knowing a horse rider’s hand signals is very important. “The signal for you to slow down is the rider extending their arm outstretched with an open hand, palm out and moving their arm up and down. “If they need you to stop they will show a raised hand out front. This might be because they are training an inexperienced horse in using the road or something has happened. “To turn right we will point with our right arm outstretched and point left with our left arm outstretched to turn left.” A horse will hear a vehicle approaching from the rear, but won’t necessarily see it and modern cars such as hybrids are very quiet. Ambient noise like high winds or farm machinery also means the horse might not hear you which could startle it, and it may lurch sideways into your path before the rider can regain control. “Loud stereos and noisy blow-off valves or exhausts as you accelerate away can also cause a fright. Gently accelerate away once you pass the horse and don’t use your horn.” At a roundabout a horse rider will stay left

8

the whole way around, even though they might be turning right — watch for hand signals. Marijke says riders need to remember to always wear a helmet and be courteous on the road. Don’t ride more than two abreast, or on the right of any moving vehicle. ‘If you are leading another animal always keep it on your left away from the traffic, and if at night wear reflective clothing and carry a torch. “It is courteous to give a friendly wave, smile or nod to motorists when they pass safely. If you face a negative experience refrain from rude gestures or shouting because this can lead to an altercation and startle the animal. “Be aware of everything going on around you and if riding in a group approach the road single file with the most experienced rider in the lead. Before crossing the road, get your animal’s full attention and cross together when it is safe and then continue with one horse length between each person.” Mail boxes, flags, or garbage tossed into the ditch could startle animals. Horses use their ears to focus on sounds and may hear something before you do so stay aware. Engine sounds give clues as to what type of vehicles are approaching and the speeds they may be travelling. “Always respect private property and ‘No Trespassing’ signs and leave gates

11

It is advisable to reduce speed when passing horses and riders and to give them as much room as possible

the way you found them — open if they are open and close them behind you if you open them to pass through,” she says. Ultimately, if everyone respects each other, rides and

drives in a safe manner and pays attention to other road users, we can all enjoy ourselves and certainly have way less unnecessary accidents or incidents.”

GREAT NEWS

4

Enrolling NOW for 2018 From 1 January 2018, NorthTec programmes will be fees-free for eligible first-time tertiary students. Find out whether you are eligible for Fees Free study in 2018 at www.feesfree.govt.nz.

AGRICULTURE

At NorthTec we understand the importance of our region’s primary industries. Forestry, agriculture and horticulture are some of the biggest contributors to our economy, and employment opportunities are waiting for our well-trained students with a great attitude! We prepare you for your next steps in life by providing training that’s developed with input from our local employers and industry representatives.

STUDY AGRICULTURE

New Zealand’s economic success relies heavily on the productivity of the agricultural sector. Quality trained and motivated people are in high demand throughout Northland and New Zealand. NorthTec delivers agricultural training on real, working farms, with knowledgeable tutors who have spent their lives working the land. Our programmes are ideal for people thinking of a career in farming, or looking to take the next step in running a farming business. Courses on offer include*: LEVEL 3 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 5

New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Farming Systems) New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Vehicles, Machinery and Infrastructure) New Zealand Diploma in Agribusiness Management

AGRICULTURE GRADUATE – KHANA KIRO “I love hard work and I learn fast if I’m doing hands-on work. I came from the city and jumping on this course has introduced me to fencing and stabilised my life. I love fencing. “I’m now General Farm Hand on the 750-hectare Oromahoe Trust sheep and beef farm. This farm is a training farm for our course so I made the connection with Sam, the Assistant Manager here, when we were doing coursework here. “I was drawn to the job because it involved a lot of fencing but I now also do other farm work including mustering bulls - and I love it. I’ve gained new skills like tractor driving and stock handling too, and I help some of the course trainees when they come here. “A full time position is my next step up. And eventually – I want Sam’s job!”

KHANA’S EMPLOYER, SAM KIDD – ASSISTANT MANAGER OF OROMAHOE TRUST “Khana stood out when his NorthTec agriculture course came here. He was keen as and really got stuck in to the work. This farm is the premises where the students come to learn and I work with them, but they have a course tutor. “The students do drenching, docking and fencing as well as general farm work, and I helped Khana out by giving him the use of a dog. Because he was such a good worker we offered Khana a job working here as general farm hand for a six-month contract, then we added another six months. He built up more skills including tractor driving and general shepherding with his dog, so he’s now able to apply for a position coming up later in the year. It will be a step up for him … but no, he’s not ready to take my job yet!!

Show time for shearing contest Shearers will take centre stage at this year’s Northern Wairoa A&P show, to be held at Arapohue on Saturday, February 10. Show manager Nicky Poyner said she’s confident the event will build on the success of the last one, and that the public can look forward to a really good day of family entertainment. A development she is particularly pleased about is being part of the inaugural ANZ Northland Shearing competition. Having teams of shearers able to gain points at the local shows to qualify for a final to be held later in the year at the Kumeu show is a real plus. Congratulations to the ANZ Bank for having the foresight to sponsor the Northland competition, it can only be good for the sport of competitive shearing, and by extension the local shows, including Northern Wairoa. “We are hoping for a good entry of show animals, which together with exhibition animals in some of the sideshows, should see plenty to satisfy the eye of young and old.” As show manager she has always had a soft spot for the indoor section. “In this day of being more conscious of healthy eating, it can be inspirational to see what ordinary people can grow in their gardens. Believe me, it is a case of if they can do it, so can anybody. “Finally, of course there will be the usual fun things: gumboot throwing;

The committee has been working

Avocado care essential

10 NEW ZEALAND SOUTH ISLAND 2018 Nature Walking Tour for Seniors

18 Day Tour: Departs 25 April 2018

by Erica Faber, Orchard Productivity Manager, Just Avocados Ltd

Fruit set is the process in which flowers become fruit. The seed develops and the surrounding tissue grows to form a berry. Yes, as strange as it may seem, the avocado fruit is botanically classified as a berry. Fruit set is a stressful time for avocado trees due to the high demand and competition for resources between the mature fruit that is being harvested, the fruit that is being set for next year’s harvest as well as the new shoots that will produce next year’s flowers – three concurrent growth cycles. The challenge is to balance the resource needs of all three growth cycles in order to ensure optimal tree health and performance as well as optimal fruit quality and yield. It is normal for a large portion of flowers and fruitlets to fail and drop, even under optimum conditions but good orchard management can ensure improved fruit set. • Practice balanced soil and leaf nutrition. The supply of nutrients from the roots can be insufficient to satisfy the high nutrient demand during flowering and fruit set. Supplemental fertiliser nutrients applied to the foliage can help to meet this demand. • Pruning management is important for maintaining a balance between vegetative growth and production as well as ensuring adequate light into the canopy for successful flowering and fruit set. • Seaweed products are a common source of plant hormones important for

STAY AFLOAT stimulating flowering and improving fruit set. • Ensure healthy canopies. Leaves are responsible for providing important resources through photosynthesis. • Healthy roots are important in order to produce cytokinins, support the tree by efficient nutrient uptake and supply adequate water to meet the increase in transpiration during this period. • If you are fortunate enough to have

irrigation, now is the time that you will reap the rewards. Any water deficit stress during fruit set will result in elevated fruit drop. Fruit drop can continue well into February and ensuring we do everything we can to minimise unnecessary fruit drop will ensure we line our pockets rather than the orchard floor.

ADVERTORIAL

Past its use-by date by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

A new model is needed that covers all parts of our agricultural system and lessens the negative impacts on our topsoil, waterways and environment as a whole. The current model of agro-chemical production is well past its use-by date and out of kilter with today’s consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Here at Agrissentials we already have the new model of fertility, based around Mother Nature, which is designed to remineralise and revitalise deficient topsoil, all for the price of our fertilisers, which are in line with current fertiliser costs, but with all the benefits of building a multi-mineral, microbial

rich, worm wriggling, water retaining soil, enhancing the farm and protecting the environment. In the mid 1980s, as a commercial grower of produce for the Japanese market, my squash plants failed to grow. This created a major change in my thinking, to a point where I made a move towards using more natural fertilisers and managing chemicals out of my spray programme; focussing on getting more mineral content to the plant, so that it would build its own immune system. What a difference that made not

2

only to the plant’s health and production, but also to my health. There is no denying that our planet is in the midst of an ecological crisis. However, thanks to gravity, all the elements needed to repair the system and especially the soils are still here on the planet. Basically, the best top soils are made up of rock dust deposited on the plains and in the valleys through glacial movement. Microorganisms and worm life flourish in a chemical free environment and these beautiful creatures are essential to having healthy, productive topsoil. To grow good healthy plants you need minerals, microbes, sunlight and water, not one or two minerals but a full spectrum of minerals in a completely natural form — not synthetic! Not just one or two microbes, but a full array of microorganisms in mega numbers. This is what we specialise in; multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bringing health and vitality back to soils, plants, animals, humans and the environment. Our fertilisers are living fertilisers which

encourage worm life, which in turn increases mineral potency on average 306% over all minerals taken through the worm’s gizzard and deposited in their castings. (Brookside Laboratories research on worm castings). For over 20 years Agrissentials has been passionately dedicated to manufacturing the highest quality, safest and easiest to handle natural fertilisers that get results. We are BioGro certified but you don’t need to be certified to gain all the benefits of our products. Most of our customers are conventional farmers but choose to use our products because they reap all the productivity benefits with no negative impacts to people, the animals or the environment. Remembering Jim Anderton’s effectiveness

19

Farmers will remember Mr Anderton as a pragmatist who got things done, Federated Farmers President Katie Milne says. “While many Kiwis cherish him as a straight-shooter who spoke up for the disadvantaged and less well off, his significant contribution to the primary sector also should not be forgotten,” says Ms Milne. People in rural communities joined other New Zealanders in mourning the loss of a respected MP and leader who fought hard for the causes he believed in. “There were some raised eyebrows when Helen Clark appointed Mr Anderton as Agricultural and Biosecurity Minister in 2005. Three weeks into the role, he told a meeting of the Federated Farmers National Council that while he didn’t know much about farming compared to his audience, as Economic Development Minister for the previous six years he brought expertise in bringing industries together to improve their economic performance and ‘I’m the minister for getting things done’.” Ms Milne says he turned out to be one of our best agriculture ministers. “He was a strong advocate for the sector, and regularly reminded New Zealanders that farming was the most important source of export income for New Zealand. “I was greatly impressed and inspired as a young leader when I had the privilege of accompanying him when he

visited the West Coast in his early days as the new minister. My lasting memory of Jim Anderton is of an approachable and accessible man who listened and got things done.” He championed the importance of irrigation to the economy, supporting an in-depth study that quantified the economic and environmental value of the Opuha Dam to South Canterbury, and boosting funding assistance for irrigation through the Community Irrigation Fund. His advocacy spurred a significant boost to the sustainable development of the primary sector, including financial support to establish a nationwide network of Rural Support Trust to assist rural communities following adverse events,” Ms Milne says. “Mr Anderton was not afraid of a challenge and would do what was right rather than what was popular. He was one of the ministers who initiated New Zealand taking Australia to the World Trade Organisation over their blockage of New Zealand’s apple access to Australia. “Despite a degree of opposition, he was a strong supporter of the highly successful Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme that came into effect in 2007 to recruit workers from overseas for seasonal work when there

Swim site safety tool

21

A new ‘Can I swim here?’ online tool launched recently means Northland residents and visitors can enjoy our rivers, lakes, and beaches with confidence this summer. The online tool shows the most upto-date water quality information for 60 sites across the region and is freely available on LAWA.org.nz/swim. “With Northlanders now making the important decision of where to swim this summer, the launch is well timed and it started two weeks after Northland Regional Council staff started weekly summer-season water quality monitoring,” says Environmental Monitoring manager JeanCharles Perquin. Mr Perquin is part of the local water monitoring team and is pleased that information from samples the team collects is freely available to the public. “Each week we collect samples from 60 sites across the region and they are sent to an independent lab for water quality testing,” he says. “The results are shown on LAWA’s ‘Can I swim here?’ site with unsafe-for-swimming faecal indicator bacteria levels marked red, and good levels marked green.” The LAWA website contains valuable information on other swim-smart things to look out for before taking a dip. This includes advice on checking if the water is clean and clear, avoiding swimming for two days after heavy rainfall, and looking out for other possible hazards. LAWA is a partnership between councils, Cawthron Institute, Ministry for

the Environment and Massey University and has been supported by the Tindall Foundation. Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd says he will be using the tool. “This information will help families get out and enjoy the stunning rivers, lakes, and beaches our region has to offer,” he says. “The website covers popular swimming spots such as Ocean Beach and Lake Taharoa, and I recommend people look at the information before heading out for a swim.”

The Ministry for Primary Industries has confirmed that the bacterial cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis is present on a farm in the Ashburton area. The current number of infected properties now stands at 14 – one in Hawkes Bay, nine in South Canterbury, three in Southland, and one in Ashburton. The Ministry’s response incident controller David Yard says milk sampling carried out by the dairy industry just before Christmas revealed a suspected positive result and MPI’s Animal Health Laboratory testing has just confirmed this. “The affected farm and an associated property have been under controls since Christmas Eve as a precautionary measure. No animals or other risk goods such as used farm equipment have been allowed on or off the property during this time and these controls stand,” Mr Yard says. “There has been no sign of any illness in any of the approximately 600 animals on the property. MPI is now tracing animal movements on and off the farm to determine if there are links to other affected properties, and will carry out checks and testing on some 30 other farms that have had some association with the new affected property. “Farmers that have had some connection with the affected property will be contacted and those who do not hear from us in the next couple of weeks should consider they are under no increased risk from this most recent

David Yard, MPI’s response incident controller

detection.” MPI is continuing tests on another Ashburton area farm that had previously returned inconclusive results. This farm is not regarded as positive, although it is under controls just in case. “MPI and its industry partners in the response understand how

worrying this new detection is to the farming community. People with concerns or questions can phone 0800 00 83 33 or email info@mpi.govt.nz. Full information about Mycoplasma bovis is at: www.mpi.govt.nz

Keeping drinking water safe Safe drinking-water is vital for good health and with the hot summer weather and possible droughts in store, people using household water collection tanks are reminded to check their tanks are clean and safe. It is your responsibility to reduce the risk of waterborne illness from contamination as this water is used for drinking, teeth cleaning, hand washing, bathing, showering, food preparation and cooking, and needs to be free from harmful germs and chemicals. If your water comes from a mains supply, it is monitored by your local authority. Water contamination can cause illness such as diarrhoea and vomiting which can be particularly dangerous for infants, very old people, or people with damaged immune systems. Contaminated water can carry harmful germs such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Campylobacter, Salmonella, E.coli 0157 and viruses. Tank water is generally collected from rain off the roof, streams or lakes, a bore or a natural spring. Water may be contaminated from ash, dust, agricultural spraying, wildlife droppings or dead animals and be discoloured or unpleasant to taste. Check the paint on your roof is safe and ensure pipes and gutters are approved for rainwater collection. Installing a gutter mesh helps prevent debris from blocking gutters and ensure

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K 1

that the tank is well vented - allowing the water to breathe and to reduce pressure build-up in the tank. Roof areas should be kept clear of overhanging vegetation to prevent leaves and debris falling on to the catchment. Overhanging branches also give pests access to the roof and allow birds to roost above it. Exercise extreme care when cleaning roofs and gutters. Ensure that the ladder is secure and away from power lines and that there is another person present. Disconnect the pipes that feed water to the tank and use a chlorine solution (half a teaspoon of plain household bleach added to 10 litres of water) to scrub and flush away the faecal material and use sufficient water to flush away the remaining material, then reconnect the pipes that feed water to the tank. Tanks should be inspected annually and cleaning should ideally be carried out by tank-cleaning contractors. Should you personally need to enter the tank to clean it, ensure it has adequate ventilation and there is another person present. A water filter helps prevent contamination and can be used to treat household water. This should be

purchased from a reputable supplier and placed where water entering the house passes through it. If you are unsure about the quality and safety of your drinking-water supply, you can disinfect the supply by boiling the water for one minute; boiling is the simplest and the most effective method that will reliably kill Cryptosporidium Parasites and other germs. To fill your tanks from an external source, such as in times of low rainfall, use a registered water carrier. If you are unsure about the quality of your water, have it tested in a recognised laboratory and if you are concerned about the quality of your water supply, contact an Environmental Health Officer at your local council for advice.

Be water wise this summer DON’T WASTE IT 11

Regatta is still going strong

After 132 years in the business of offering plenty of fun both on and off the water, the Pahi Regatta for 2018 will be held again over Anniversary Weekend attracting players and spectators from around the north and beyond. Only in a few years during the two world wars have the holiday weekend waters stayed quiet off Pahi, and this year as ever, the Pahi Beach Holiday Park will be wall-to-wall packed with tents, caravans, mobile homes and house trucks for three days of harbourside fun and games. However, sites are expected to be at a premium so if you don’t have a booking, you will need to check availability, perhaps find another site from many Kaipara has to offer. Offshore, launch and powerboat races, kayaking contests and all manner of aquatic activities keep the crowds entertained while the sometimes dramatic bathtub races attract all eyes to the water as home-made contraptions powered by small outboard motors vie for prize money. On shore in the big marquee, a carnival atmosphere is in progress. There are side shows and stalls aplenty, and under canvas hosts beauty contests and live music. The emphasis will once again be on plenty of fun, plenty of sport and plenty of entertainment with the overall emphasis on safety and family enjoyment. The events begin on Saturday, and on the Sunday, contestants in the bathtub race, with each craft limited to a two-horsepower motor, will be vying

STEEL BUILDINGS with

X FACTOR!

for a top purse of $1,000. The Pahi Regatta once attracted steamers from Helensville loaded with Aucklanders, to take part in greasy pole competitions, horse swimming races, and other longabandoned events. The early days of the regatta were recorded in the book, Child of the Kauri: ‘The annual Otamatea Regatta held at Pahi was one of the years’ highlights. There was always plenty of excitement at these functions with a wide variety of

11

activities on water and land. The launch races provided such speed thrills as they were able — lumbering craft, chiefly working launches, plugging sedately around the course with the officials themselves being in some considerable doubt as to who won what’. The regatta today is a spectacular event with modern and faster craft. Gone are the licenced hotel, the buggies and the mullet boats, but the atmosphere of tidewater and salty mud still lingers.

Feed company to import and deliver molasses nationwide New Zealand-based national feed company GrainCorp Feeds has announced it will offer molasses through its national supply chain. General manager Daniel Calcinai says this change from solely a distributor to an importer and distributor is significant for the dairy industry and will offer farmers greater choice when it comes to their liquid feed requirements. The company will offer the product direct to New Zealand dairy farmers using their national storage facilities, which can hold up 35,000Mt of product. This will streamline the import and distribution process of molasses as a liquid supplementary feed across the country. “Our ports in Tauranga, New Plymouth, Bluff and Timaru are strategically positioned to allow the efficient delivery of molasses throughout New Zealand’s dairy regions,” says Mr Calcinai. “Molasses has a proven history of increasing output and improving quality when used as part of a comprehensive feed programme. Our priority is to offer New Zealand farmers access to industry leading feed products supported by an efficient supply chain with outstanding customer service.” Mr Calcinai believes that the focus on milk composition with the incoming parameters and potential penalties from inflated fat, measured using the fat evaluation index (FEI), will encourage the use of feeds other than palm kernel. Molasses provides the flexibility to be fed in its current state

The Graincorp feed team at Tauranga port

or blended with other GrainCorp dry or liquid feeds to help reduce palm kernel consumption and FEI penalties. “It’s widely agreed that molasses is an excellent supplementary feed for pasture fed ruminants and provides many benefits for dairy cows as part of the overall diet,” he says.

“As well as blackstrap and feed-grade molasses, GrainCorp Feeds will also offer blended molasses in their LiquiPro

8

range, such as molasses with calcium, magnesium, zinc or other additives to suit different herd requirements.”

by Ann Morgan Extracting oil from avocados is how the Olivado story began in Kerikeri back in 1999 when a group of technical people, foodies and an investor saw the opportunity for avocado oil to be introduced as a healthy culinary option.

T

he company now employs 18 local staff with many involved from the outset and has expanded internationally. “Originally the team worked together with scientists at Massey University to pioneer and perfect the process of oil extraction from the avocado. It uses just the pulp of the fruit,” says acting general manager Jason Vokes. “By 2003 the New Zealand avocado supply could not keep up with our demand so we established a processing plant in Queensland, but avocados grown in tropical areas have a lot of waxes so are difficult to process and the project proved unsuccessful. “Gary Hannam, our investor at the time, discovered the Murang’a district

in Kenya had a consistent volume of avocado production already established so we built there and began a pilot project in 2007.” In 2009 Gary became the sole owner of the business. “Within six months of being in Kenya we sourced more than 400 small farm holdings, and had them certified organic by Swiss Organic Certifier Institute for Marketecology. “The project there gives us access to Social Fair Trade and we now purchase directly from more than 1,500 independent organic farms, and employ 60 staff in the factory. “A fair proportion of the farmers we support are women and we are now the world’s largest producer, producing

approximately 95 per cent of the world’s organic avocado oil, and sell in more than 33 countries. “Our Kerikeri factory processes mainly Hass avocados and Kenya produces mostly from the Fuerte variety. From New Zealand, we have changed the lives of more than 10,000 people in Kenya through employment opportunities due to the crop sizes available. “We process around 150 metric tonnes of avocado oil annually here in Kerikeri. “Gary has that rare mix of a business capability coupled with creative thinking. He lectured in international business and marketing at Victoria University before becoming a leading player in the New Zealand film industry in the 1980s. He was one of the producers of ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ movie and it is his vision that has steered Olivado to where we are today. “It has been proven that extra virgin avocado oil is one of the healthiest and most versatile culinary oils available and natural nutrition is the company’s philosophy. “We believe that a balanced diet comprising a variety of foods should give a person all the nutrition they need daily. “The high burn point makes the oil the best choice for healthy pan frying and high heat cooking, and the rich smooth taste enhances the flavours. It is perfect with vegetables, salads, baking and adding to smoothies.” He says some of the health benefits of the oil are high levels of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, omegas 6 and 9, lutein, alpha and beta carotene and 1

The avocados are processed to remove the oil and the remaining dry pulp and clean water is utilised on a neighbouring farm vitamin E. “Our products include extra virgin avocado oil, macadamia and coconut oils, organic omega oil, sesame, sweet almond and peanut oils, and most recently organic olive oil, as well as a variety of flavour infused oils - all cold pressed to preserve optimum health benefits during the extraction process. “We do a few refined oils meaning we press at a higher temperature producing a nice clear cooking oil.” Avocado oil can only be extracted from ripe fruit and these are graded by hand for ripeness and imperfections. They then go through a water bath before being de-skinned and destoned. The remaining avocado flesh goes into a malaxer and comes out with the consistency of guacamole. To be classified as extra virgin oil

27

The Kerikeri based company employs 18 local staff — processing 150 metric tonnes of avocado oil annually

the temperature must stay below 50 degrees. The resultant puree passes through a centrifuge, similar to that used for olive oil, which separates the pulp from the oil and water. The final stage of the process separates the water from the oil which is then ready for bottling, labelling, and packaging on site. “The skins and stones go to the green waste for compost,” says Jason. “The dry pulp goes to the dairy farm across the road. We extract the last of the oil from the green water and end up dealing simply with clean water and this is spread over the pasture with a muck spreader. “We also press olives for local artisan growers who sell their oil at the farmers’ markets and we recently won a gold medal in Northland for our olive oil.”

the wild by Ann Morgan

Mawera Karetai is a lecturer of business strategy, a hunter of pest animals and birds, and teaches people to cook with wild foods available around the country as a healthy food option.

“H

unting meat is a big part of my life. My dad was a hunter and I grew up looking at pest species such as hare and turkey as healthy food sources,” says Mawera. “As part of my master’s degree I did a study on opossums and wallabies. It is sad that as a society we look at pests animals as an evil demonic thing to kill at all costs, when in actual fact they are a serious source of nutrition. “My favourite food is wallaby meat — it is seriously good. “We have the little dama wallaby and the other is the red neck. Those are two of twelve species that were liberated into New Zealand in the late 1800s and early 1900s by Governor Grey through the Climatisation Society. They were the

9

two types to survive on the mainland.” Mawera and her husband Dave Barrett hunt pest animals including peacock, turkey, rabbit, goat, pig and deer, and she enjoys feeding her family food that they have got some control over. “I know that the animal was running around happy and healthy in the bush — it died without suffering when it became food for my family. There is a healthy feeling about complete engagement with your food source. “Our children’s favourite food is peacock fingers. You take the breast off and fillet the meat from the outside connective tissue. You end up with really soft delicate meat.” They shoot a least 100 peacocks a year on farms. Turkeys are also a pest

food. Every five peacocks or turkeys eat as much grass in a day as one sheep. “Dave came from Canada and had always hunted so he provides our meat and we haven’t brought any in 12 years. We got into peacock hunting when we heard the regional council was poisoning them to control the population. “We asked them to let us manage the population and use them as food. One farm was contending with 3,000 birds and this caused major damage.” The couple sell the bird feathers across the country and overseas as a way to ensure nothing is wasted. “We clean the feathers thoroughly and have never been declined with an inspection. “They do arrow fletching in Germany so we send quill feathers, and in America the turkey tail feathers are used for Native Indian headdresses as that is their endemic species and our feathers were used in the Hobbit movie for the hand made arrows.” Feathers are also used for quill pens and kapa haka costumes. “Goat is a big staple in our family along with peacock, and hare. Rabbit are also beautiful — especially in winter with the grass so green — the meat is sweet. “We pluck the opossums and the meat goes to pig farms as food to grow the pork — it is more important for the pigs to eat them than us.” Mawera says wallabies can be destructive because they graze the grass and any little shoots, killing the pasture. “There has been a spread in the wallaby population because they weren’t

contained. They actually like confined spaces but where there is food pressure they spread out. If you keep them culled they stay in one spot. “Goats meat is beautiful and better than lamb. We make mince and sausages which are not filled with chemicals and other unhealthy products.” Dave moved here from Canada as a scientist in 2000. “When he landed here he says he found paradise and in summer his is a trout fishing guide. “Hunting is a wonderful thing and as a family we go off into the bush and we involve other families as well and teach them. peacock and other wild pests foods and I present public demonstrations and judge at wild food competitions across the country. It is awesome to be connected to our food. This is something I value most highly in my cooking life. “It feels so much better to be working with something that we went and got ourselves. “It’s not cruel, it is completely the opposite. The animals are happy and then they are dead, it is that quick. I write a wild food blog, thewildcook.co.nz, where I endeavour to take readers on a culinary journey to wild and wonderful places you might never otherwise have gone.”
