“We see the announcement by ACC minister Iain LeesGalloway of a $22 million, fiveyear programme to incentivise SMEs to boost health and safety efforts as very useful,” says Federated Farmers president Katie Milne. “Most farms are in this small to medium business category and the Minister is right when he says barriers to accessing such things as workplace capability development, professional health and safety consulting advice and capital investment in significant safety equipment are often too high, thus limiting uptake. “Long-term injur y rehabilitation and loss of productivity from injury carries a high price tag, alongside the pain, stress and grief for the individuals and their families.” Five sectors currently represent more than half of all severe workplace injuries — agriculture, forestr y, constr uction, manufacturing and healthcare/ social assistance. “There’s a lot of work still to do to develop sector-specific safety initiatives and this new stream of grants and assistance will help,” Katie says. A good example of an industry-specific workplace safety programme is Tahi Ngatahi, an on-line training programme launched last year to improve safety and reduce injuries to shearers and others in the wool industry. “ACC helped industry get this off the ground. The new funding could help other, similar initiatives,” Katie says. “Historically agriculture hasn’t had a structure and formal focus on health and safety like larger businesses with an HR team to do it; the plan of action

0800 435 684

has tended to reside in the farmer’s head. But progress is accelerating now. Farmers recognise that the injury and fatality statistics in their line of work are far too high. “The combination of health and safety challenges facing farm businesses are different to many other workplaces — weather, operating machinery over difficult terrain, working in isolated places, sometimes unpredictable animal behaviour. “More help, training programmes and safer equipment specific to our sector will protect farming families and their staff.”

Over the cattle stop feature What’s happening over the cattle stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Northern Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the

top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one. The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

Fire risk high in Northland by staff reporters

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is urging Northland residents to think twice about lighting rubbish fires as temperatures soar and grass and vegetation dries out, with Northland fire crews attending several scrub and rubbish fires already this month. Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Clinton Lyall says it’s important people check their local fire status to see if they need a permit to light an outdoor fire. “Northland is getting dry and things can quickly get out of control. “Even though the grass seems to be fairly green… it’s deceptive. “It’s the hot temperatures and the low humidity in the later parts of the day driven by wind.” In the Far North, a scrub fire in Taipa last week burned through one hectare of land, and a huge fire in Matawai, south of Kaikohe burned through 60 hectares of bush and took four days to extinguish. Fire crews also attended several unpermitted rubbish fires, including one at Taemaro Bay between Hihi and Taupo Bay, which put 10 houses at risk on January 5. Deputy Principal Fire Officer Wayne Martin said appliances from Taupo Bay and Mangonui arrived in time to put out the hotspots of the rubbish fire that had “got away”. “With the conditions at the moment, particularly since Christmas, we haven’t

had any rain and we’ve had high temperatures and afternoon winds. Northland is drying out. “People need to start being more vigilant around getting permits, and question whether they really need to be burning rubbish at this time of year.” It is currently a restricted fire season in Northland, which means residents wanting to light an outdoor fire must get a permit. Permits are free and can be obtained online at checkitsalright.nz or by phoning 0800 658 628. Metservice predicts a hot and dry January, and Wayne says these conditions are a concern. A wet spring in Northland caused lots of vegetation growth, and the long grass is now starting to dry out and become a fire hazard. He encourages people to keep their lawns and paddocks mowed. “The grass is starting to dry and the chances of a fast-moving fire in grass and scrub is starting to rise.” Wayne is also happy to talk about: • Safe burn offs on rural properties

• Safe BBQs, hangis and outdoor cooking • Safe bonfires and campfires • Fire risks for the week ahead Contact Deputy Principal Fire Officer Wayne Martin — 027 443 2720 or Senior Fire Risk Management Officer Gary Beer 027 569 5783. Meanwhile Northland electricity lines companies Top Energy and Northpower say the fires in Russell are a timely reminder that landowners need to be aware of their obligations around service lines. Service lines are the overhead or underground electricity lines which run from the street or road to houses or other buildings on landowners’ property. The companies say landowners are responsible for the upkeep of power lines, poles and underground cables that supply electricity from the Top Energy or Northpower networks to their property. Russell Shaw, Top Energy’s chief executive is encouraging landowners to keep trees well away from powerlines and service lines. “We need people to be aware of their service lines and arrange to have trees and vegetation within four metres removed. Our advice is that if you are concerned that trees have grown too close, you should seek assistance from an arborist,” says Mr Shaw. “It is a message we have been trying to get out to our community in

A helicopter battles a fire near Russell, as the Northland fire risk rises

conjunction with Northpower for some time now and it really is a very serious issue that people need to act on.” Northpower Network general manager Josie Boyd shares the concerns of Top Energy and Fire and Emergency New Zealand. “Separate to the tree issue which fires in Russell have recently highlighted, we would urge all Northlanders to regularly check their service lines to ensure they are in good condition, and do not pose a safety hazard or fire risk. People should phone their electrician if they are unsure.”

an and his wife Angela have owned the shop for more than five years. His parents originally purchased the store off Alistair and Dan managed it before travelling to London and working for an award-winning butcher there. He later moved to Melbourne, Australia, learning from a well-known Italian butcher who taught him how to do things the Italian way, particularly sausages. Dan eventually returned to New Zealand and bought the business from his parents. He and Angela now work with a team of staff including apprentices. “We have since entered many competitions and won several awards including a silver medal for our

Dan has won other awards including the Upper North Island Young Butcher of the Year competition in 2016. “There were six competitors, and the event is usually supermarket dominated. wins,” said Dan. “We had a two-hour cutting test on speed, efficiency, saleability of the products, the best yield and the overall display and cooking knowledge.” In that competition, there were a certain amount of compulsory products the butchers needed to produce. “We were given an eye fillet with sirloin attached, a shoulder of pork and a size 20 chicken to see what we could come up with. It shows how creative you can get with meat. I ended up with 34 products. “It is really exciting to win at this level, not only for recognition for the shop and ourselves but to be able to compete in something like this makes all the hard work worthwhile and it’s nice to know that you are doing a good job. “Winning something like Young Butcher of the Year really sets you apart and gets your name out there.” Dan has also reinvented certain recipes and created a rolled Scotch fillet stuffed with blue cheese and chives. “We have revamped our smoked pastrami recipe, and it has become incredibly popular. It is smoky sweet, thinly sliced beef, and is great for platters with crackers and a nice whole grain mustard. Angela doesn’t like smoked meat, but she loves this. “The rolled Scotch is incredible cut into steaks, and I have created a rolled lamb leg too that is stuffed with our very own basil pesto and creamy feta. “I have had a lot of support from the community, and we enjoy seeing visitors come to town. They often purchase our meat and become regular clients. It is a way to take a little bit of Mangawhai home with them.” Dan’s chicken, lime and lemongrass sausage beat 500 contenders in the Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition 2016, and he tied for the gold medal in the poultry category for the same sausage.

Northern Districts Young Parader member Jennifer Thomas grew up in Tomarata and has been showing cattle from her uncle’s farm since she was young.

“M

y family have been in farming for many years — my mum and her siblings grew up on the farm we live on and were involved in showing cattle when they were young,” says Jennifer. “My two uncles also have farms, and one of them taught me to train up calves for calf club, and I have continued. I show pure Jerseys as that is what he had, but he has now gone into Shorthorns. “Depending on their pedigrees, structure, bloodlines and what they look like on the day depends on which I would show. Some cows were my calf club calves, which I continued with, and

some cows we had to halter train which is harder as they are a lot stronger.” Jennifer says she enjoys all aspects of training and experiences at the events including meeting new people that have the same interests because they learn from each other. “I help on my uncle’s farm with the calves and to keep my calves healthy we make sure they are drenched and have the injections they need. They are usually quite playful, and you can tell if they are not themselves as they aren’t as lively if there is something wrong. “I shampoo and brush them the night before and morning of a show. Usually,

they get clipped and groomed so there are no loose hairs and you keep them as clean as possible and brush them constantly. I feed my stock molasses with their milk in the shed, and then we give them silage and pellets mix to help keep them in good condition. “It is nice to grow up with the animals and discover their individual personalities and temperaments — what they like and don’t. I usually start with halter training and work my way up to walking and brushing once they are comfortable. “There are separate classes for showing cattle — yearlings, two-yearold and four-year-old and the handler is judged on handling ability not necessarily the cow.” Jennifer qualified second overall in Northland for handling and went on to represent Northland at the Royal Hawke’s Bay show and won her category. “I then represented New Zealand in Australia. They provided the stock to show, and we had 30 to 40 minutes with the animal before entering the ring. It was a little different and slower, and we were judged on handling ability and how we personally presented. It was a great experience seeing how the Australians show, what their animals are like and the different dairy breeds we don’t see at shows here. Jennifer encourages others to get involved in young paraders. “Even if you don’t have a farm you can help, and there are often calves you

can borrow, and people will teach you what to do. It is a good opportunity, and for me, the animals I show are different from dairy. “You learn to use the show stick to guide the stock — you just touch the animal softly, and it directs them and helps with their presentation. “I like Jerseys because they are little and very pretty and the ones I show have a nice temperament to them. Their personalities are soft, and they often have very pretty eyes, especially the orangey brownish ones. “I have a Jersey bull as well that was a show pet, and we trained him up as a late calf when he was seven months old. He should have been grouchy but he is very placid, and as a three-year-old bull he would walk up to the fence for a scratch and is lovely, not feisty at all. “Showing is a great hobby; it is very calming and a great distraction from everyday life. The animals become your actual friends and have so many personalities. I have one who will just follow me around the paddock. They are very loving, and you can tell that they care for you and they know that you care for them as well. “I have just finalised my first year of studying a bachelor of education for primary teaching. I want to work at a small rural school and use my experiences and help the students with calf club and different rural aspects of life through my personal experiences.”

Growing asparagus is a crop the Boyd family have turned into a thriving business venture and now the company, Boyds Asparagus Industries Ltd helps others on the road to success with the highly nutritious vegetable.

“M

y wife Kay and I started growing asparagus in 1980 by default. We were going to have a combined orchard but decided on boysenberries and asparagus — but the harvesting times clashed, so we dropped the berries and concentrated on asparagus,” says Alex Boyd. “Asparagus comes from the Greek word meaning sprout or shoot and is a perennial member of the lily family, which includes onions, leeks, and garlic. The cultivation began more than 2,000 years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean area.” In 1997, along with 29 other growers, the family began packing under the

Boyds trademark. “We guaranteed our asparagus would be top-quality, picked and bunched fresh daily and we established ourselves as one of the leaders in growing and supply all the main supermarkets here in New Zealand. “We grow approximately 180 hectares of the vegetable around the district and pack around 800 tons annually. During the season from September to December we contract some 200 pickers and employ 100 staff in the packhouse. “Seventy per cent goes to the local market with the balance exported to Japan or the USA.” Asparagus is grown by seed in a nursery for the first year, and then the

crowns are lifted and then planted in the fields. “You let it grow for the first two years so the plant can set itself up for a good production capacity and the next two years you harvest it lightly. Being a perennial, each plant grows for up to 15 years, and in full production, we get six to seven tonnes per hectare each season.” When the spear reaches 23cm in length, with a tight head and good green colour, it is harvested, and more spears appear. “These are washed, trimmed, graded and packed within hours of harvesting and transferred to the chillers immediately to guarantee a superior flavour and freshness. Each plant keeps putting up spears for 90–100 days and is harvested by hand. Near the end of October when the spring weather warms the ground temperature, a spear can grow 20cms in 24 hours hence you have to pick daily. “There are not many growers around anymore. Over the past few years, our main export to Japan has been taken over by Australia due to the cost of freight and production costs. Here you have to invest around $12–14k per hectare to establish a crop, which then takes time to get into commercial production growth. “We manage blocks for other people, and this helps with employment for staff. We believe in helping others advance in the industry and provide the knowledge of our experience. “We guide people with the establishment and maintenance of the

beds, weed and pest control and with arranging and managing pickers during the harvest period. “Asparagus is one of the most friendly crops to grow. We don’t use insecticides, but we do use a pre-emergence spray to stop the weeds growing. Birds don’t worry it — but rabbits and possums can be a problem, however they can be controlled quite quickly. “Our son Ashley is involved in the business, and we are committed to food safety, and all of our suppliers hold either NZGap or Eurepgap Certification. Boyds Asparagus is currently accredited to the Woolworths Quality Assurance, BRC and NZGap food safety programmes. “Asparagus is very good for you, it is high in protein, low in carbs and calories

and is high in potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. We recommend everyone buy a little often because fresh is best. “Remember the key in keeping the quality good is chilling the product as soon as it is picked, buying a little amount often. Keep them in the fridge when storing at home and eat it as quickly as possible.” To cook asparagus Alex says trim the spears to the desired length, bring a pot of salted water to a rapid boil and add the asparagus. “When the water reboils take the vegetable out and put on a plate with butter, salt and pepper. “It is delicious, and I enjoy it on a thin slice of fresh white bread and butter.”

Fruit set is a stressful time for avocado trees due to the high demand and competition for resources between the current crop, the flowers that are setting fruit and the spring vegetative and root flush. The dominant activity will sink the majority of the resources and, because an avocado tree only has so many resources to offer, the tree will adapt in order to preserve itself — dropping leaves, dropping fruit, minimising new shoot growth and even inhibiting root growth. The challenge is to balance the resource needs of all these growth cycles in order to ensure optimal tree health and performance as well as consistent high yields. If these needs are not met, in heavy crop or heavy flowering years, the tree will produce fewer new shoots as resources are rather dedicated to supporting a large amount of fruit or flowers. Fewer new shoots one year means less avocado fruit the next year because avocado trees only flower, set fruit and bear fruit on peripheral new shoots. It is primarily the cause of alternate bearing. Our aim as growers, however, is to achieve consistent yields year after year. Managing the basics can help to achieve this: • Ensure adequate and balanced nutrition with a combination of solid and foliar fertilisers. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser during fruit set, however, as this can result in an increase in fruitlet drop. • Any water stress over fruit set results in a higher fruitlet drop and consequently lower production. Although our rainfall is high, we unfortunately often have dry periods

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD over the critical time of fruit set. Should you be fortunate enough to have irrigation, now is the time that this investment will pay off. • A regular pruning programme will ensure adequate light into the canopy, which in turn results in improved production with a more even crop load on the entire tree and not just predominantly the top or the periphery. It also results

in better bud quality and higher fruit set as well as a balance between vegetative and productive wood, which in turn will prevent excessive flowering. • Manage your crop load and carefully consider your harvest strategy. A heavy or late hanging crop will compromise next year’s production as well as decline poor health trees even further!

Ministers need to do some reflecting

13

by Matt King, Northland’s Member of Parliament

In early 2018 the National Party appointed me its Spokesperson for Rural Communities. Naturally I was delighted. Living in a rural community myself, the job, I thought, was tailor-made for me. I knew the importance of rural communities to our country and our economy, and I was determined to first acknowledge the role of rural communities and then give those communities the serious attention they deserve. I hoped the Government would do the same. Some hope. It has become patently clear to me that they do not. It is also patently clear that much of the pontifications made by this coalition government about supporting the regions is largely bluff and bluster at best and pork-barrelling at worst. What we are yet to see is any sign of substance or delivery on the promises they are repeatedly making. As disappointing as that is, it should come as no surprise. As untenable as it is, it can’t be forgotten that powerbase within the coalition is still the Labour Party (all others are political expediencies) and the power-base of the Labour Party is decidedly not in the rural

SAFETY FIRST

areas. If the Labour Party was not so ideologically driven and flush with newfound power (and determined to keep it) they might give the regions some thought; but they are, and they don’t. We are in the minority. Farmers and their families make up only 3 per cent of the population. The Government can’t see past that. They can’t or choose not to see the importance of farmers and primary industries to our country. But I see it and I experience it daily. I also see the growing frustration here in the north at the lack of any real progress in the areas that matter: rural health, policing, UFB roll-out, job-creation. In many of those areas we have in fact gone backwards or seen a singular failure—such as 24/7 manned police stations and support for the Rural Health Alliance—to deliver on promises. We deserve better. I am hoping that the relevant ministers now on holiday—in Northland—will take the time to reflect on that.

S for superlative strength by Andy Bryenton

It’s tough, finished in red, has a big ‘S’ on the front, comes from a humble rural lineage but offers superhuman strength and power to save the day. No, it’s not the world’s most recognisable superhero — it’s the latest offering from farming icon Massey Ferguson. With a bold new ‘S’ series of performance tractors rolling out across the world, the name that’s synonymous with tractors — even to non-farmers — have played their cards conservatively in regards to style. But under the skin there’s a world of difference between the French-built S range and those which have come before. A focus on operator comfort and ease of use has seen changes to how the machines are operated, and research and development in the engineering department has delivered a potent range of engines which combine the trifecta of lower emissions, better fuel economy and more power. Take for example the ‘middleweight boxer’ of the S range. The MF6700S delivers a smooth and willing 175hp from a four-cylinder unit under the hood, making it the most powerful inline four in the tractor world. If this was a road going car, it would be fitted with M-Power or AMG badges. As it is, that power is directed not to outright speed, but to reliable torque via a selection of gearing solutions, all of which are mated to simplified and streamlined controls. That’s not the only comparison with the world of motoring. Power is nothing without control, and so the MF6700S also delivers extreme agility, with the smallest turning circle in its class and

both a compact frame and light weight. On the farm, this means less soil compaction in transit and on the job. It also means the ability to navigate in tight spaces, barnyards and sheds to fulfil a multi-application role. Certainly, with its power rivaling that of a bulkier six-cylinder tractor, and the option to fit a handy loader on the front or a whole range of implements aft, this is a versatile option for mixed farms, those who combine dairy with

cropping, or demanding contracting applications. Massey Ferguson has never been a company to rest on past glories, instead pressing forward with new developments, some of which have famously changed the game in the past. With their S series — not just the MF6700S, but an entire range through to 370hp — they continue to innovate for the future.

Avoid on-farm accidents

According to data from ACC almost 550 farmers suffered injuries serious enough to take at least a week off work over the last summer, while there were three fatalities on farms. The major causes of injuries were trips, slips and falls, being hit or bitten by animals, hit by moving objects, and incidents involving vehicles. “The summer is a hugely productive time for farmers, and a time when family and visitors are often on the farm too,” says WorkSafe’s Agricultural lead Al McCone. “We are encouraging farmers to focus on reducing the critical risk of working in and around farm vehicles. Take a few minutes to think about the best vehicle for the job you or your workers are doing and the terrain you are going to be driving over. “Think about the locations of ditches, slopes or furrows. That might mean going back to the shed to switch vehicles, or going on foot. “Operator protective devices, like roll over protection and the use of seat belts in vehicles are key areas farmers can reduce the likelihood of an accident. Many tractor fatalities can be prevented by the driver wearing the seat belt. “You should also always check around farm vehicles before reversing — that is especially important in summer with

2

more children out and about.” Sun exposure is also a major hazard with New Zealand having the highest overall melanoma skin cancer rate in the world. Research shows that one in four New Zealand farmers have suffered skin cancer. Farmer, rugby legend, and Safer Farms Ambassador Richard Loe, says he has changed his behaviours around sun safety. “Sun safety really isn’t onerous, it is as simple as slipping on a shirt with long sleeves and wearing a hat with a wide brim or a cap with flaps — more people get sunburned on the face and neck than any other part of the body. “Slop on plenty of sunscreen at least 20-minutes before going out, use at least SPF 30 and take the bottle with you and reapply every couple of hours — especially if you have been doing sweaty work. “If you have got jobs you can do in shade or under cover, plan them for the middle of the day when the sun’s UV levels are higher — and the exposed

jobs for early or later, and don’t forget to protect your eyes from UV radiation — with wrap-round sunglasses with a good sun protection rating.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES January 2019

Think before you dump

People misusing Northland’s coastal areas as a dumping ground for unwanted fish frames and shells are being urged to show more courtesy towards others and think of the environment and health hazards this can cause. Ricky Eyre, the Northland Regional Council’s coastal and water quality field operations manager, says with roughly 3200 kilometres of coastline and some fantastic beaches and islands, it is no surprise that many people flock to Northland’s coastal areas, especially at this time of year. “Summer often coincides with a spike in the numbers of people making life unnecessarily unpleasant — and potentially risky — for others by simply dumping fish frames, and the remains of kina, oysters and other shellfish on beaches and coastal margins,” he says. “While dumping of fish frames or shellfish is not allowed under regional council rules, it is still a reasonably common problem, not just at beaches around Northland, but in other parts of New Zealand too. “The regional council generally adopts a fairly pragmatic approach to the issue, appreciating that in some conditions such as in deep, well-flushed waters, the practise realistically poses little risk to other beach users or the environment.” Mr Eyre says when dumped in the intertidal area or on land nearby,

8

Colin Hawken

3

including beaches, the waste is a potential risk to other beach users. “You wouldn’t want to stand on a broken kina shell in bare feet, put it that way. “Overall, the vast majority of people do the right thing with fish frames and shells, however, there are always some inconsiderate ones who simply

7

don’t appear to consider others when disposing of their waste. “Similarly, dumping waste like this can affect water quality and attract scavenging stingrays and sharks, again posing a potential risk to other coastal users. Disposal options include taking waste home and burying it, or in the case

8

of fish frames, you can take advantage of a group set up especially to ensure they don’t go to waste.”

Stink bugs in mail People are reminded to check online purchases after an infestation of Brown Marmorated stink bugs recently got through border biosecurity checks. MPI says this is a warning to people purchasing items over the internet and with the booming uptake in couriers delivering parcels from overseas, MPI Biosecurity’s are encouraging people to take the right steps if they find insects or plant material in their packages. A man recently found 26 Brown Marmorated stink bugs in a box of shoes ordered over the internet. The bugs got through biosecurity measures at the New Zealand border. On opening the parcel, the man immediately took the shoes and wrapping to his bathroom, closed the door and window, and called the Ministry for Primary Industries. The insects were quickly contained and killed, to no longer pose a biosecurity threat. Biosecurity is critical for many people’s jobs, and livelihoods rely on healthy agriculture and orchards. Even if you are not working directly in these areas, your lifestyle and income rely on that economy not being devastated by stink bugs or any other pests. It is not physically possible for MPI to check every parcel, so all New Zealanders need to be biosecurity watchdogs and alert MPI immediately if you find insects or plant material in any parcel from overseas.

The stink bug is a major problem in parts of North America after being accidentally introduced from Asia. It is also established in Europe and South America, and many insecticides are not effective controlling it. There are also other insects and plant pests that have the potential to ruin crops or native

6

plants. The adults are approximately the size of a $1 coin and have white banding on the antennae, alternate black and white markings on the abdomen and the eggs that are light green, barrel-shaped and found in clusters of 20 to 30. MPI Biosecurity’s website has information to help with identification and to differentiate this bug from similar local species. If you think you have found one — catch it in a jar and call MPI immediately on 0800 80 99 66.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES January 2019 ADVERTORIAL

Mulchers for Northland Agriline are committed to supplying a range of high quality mulchers suited to the Northland environment along with a variety of other products to maximise the returns from your farm. John McIntyre is the newest member of the team at Agriline and comes with many years of experience in the farm machinery industry. “I have worked across the North Island for many years, and am enjoying my role here with Agriline. I enjoy interacting with our clients knowing we are supplying machinery that works and helps people get the job done,” says John. “We specialise in helping contractors and farmers with the necessary equipment for topping pasture, including kikuyu right through to mulching gorse, scrub and tree prunings. “We also supply ground cultivation equipment including rotary hoes, power harrows, rippers and discs. It is a great experience dealing with the brands we sell, knowing they keep pace with the increasing horsepower of modern tractors that are getting bigger so we need to ensure the machinery is capable of keeping pace to give our clients many years of service for their investment.” The Vigolo mulchers have become a popular product for Northland farmers and contractors. “Vigolo has been manufacturing farm machinery in Italy for more than 60 years and Agriline has had input into design and specification of the equipment to suit what we need here in New Zealand.”

The Vigolo TDF series mulchers are a heavy duty flail mulcher with a high horsepower rating. This model has been designed specifically for NZ conditions. The single drive model is rated for up to 180HP and double drive model is rated up to a massive 300HP. “All Vigolo high body mulchers have more belts driving than any other mulcher in the industry greatly reducing

the chance of slipping belts. They have a large 273mm rotor giving it excellent strength. This also gives much better momentum, optimises performance, and helps you get through the tough spots without stalling your tractor. “At Agriline we import and sell direct to our customers allowing us to supply a high quality product at competitive pricing.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Celebrating a country tradition by Andy Bryenton

Call it twelve decades and counting. To be precise, 127 years have passed since the settlers of the northern Kaipara harbour gathered to celebrate their hard work and farming prowess for the first time at the inaugural Arapohue Show. Like many of the traditional A&P shows established in the 1880s and 1890s, this annual tradition has continued down the years and is stronger than ever today.

farmers and Agri-kids will compete in a variety of challenges displaying rural ingenuity and skill. And to make the day affordable family fun, all the sideshow games will be running on a ‘gold coin donation’ basis this year to help all comers get amongst the action. Another big drawcard of the Arapohue show is the flashing blades of the shearers — part of the official ANZ Northland Shearing competition. This sport is always hotly contested, providing a glimpse of the stamina and skill required to produce one of New Zealand’s most famous exports. With all this and more, it’s easy to see why the Northern Wairoa Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s keystone show is 127 years young and why you can expect a big crowd when the action kicks off for 2019 on Saturday, February 9.

That could be because the city and the country seem closer than ever thanks to modern transport and technology — after all, it’s only a two and a half hour drive from Auckland’s metropolis to the showgrounds on Mititai Road, in the heartland of the Kaipara. It’s likely also because a real traditional show day is so much fun, with everything from highland dancing to great food on offer This year’s show will see families from far and near gather to take in a day of hearty food, live entertainment, rides for the kids, and of course, a full schedule of competitions as rural folks vie for the coveted ribbon of champion across a huge range of skills and pursuits. Despite cattle events being cancelled due to M Bovis precautions, other farm animals will be represented in their finest for judging. The region’s young

Trail blazer by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to flat out speed across rough terrain, the Can Am Maverick has the heritage, the race-bred pedigree and the sheer power to make you believe you’re actually in the cockpit of a lowflying jet fighter. Watching the Maverick’s masterwork of suspension in slow motion as those big knobbly tyres claw at the sand and dirt is an engineering class in itself. So it’s a natural progression for the product development team at Can Am headquarters to think about applying this race-winning formula to a different discipline. Throw into the mix the toughness and nimble handling of their farming and hunting off roaders — made for less speed and more practicality — and you have one of the best ideas wrapped around an internal combustion engine since Ford put a v8 in the first edition Mustang. The new Maverick Trail is only 50 inches wide — that’s 1.27 metres and that means rocky, twisting trails are its natural habitat. Still seating two in fully roll-cage enclosed comfort, this little firecracker is designed to inspire confidence with a whole lot of low-down torque from a 1000cc, 75 horsepower Rotax engine fed air through highmounted filtered intakes to keep clear of the dust. There’s also the option of a 51hp 800cc mill, but that famous one litre power plant comes with a list of racing wins as long as your arm in other chassis, so adventure seekers might seek out the bigger displacement for

B&H WHANGAREI Ltd FOR ALL YOUR FENCING REQUIREMENTS more thrills. The Maverick Trail is not just easy to transport — though needless to say that small footprint works well when it’s time to put it on a trailer or up on a truck deck. The application of a deliberately feedback-rich power steering system means that there’s no struggling and sweating to wrestle with the wheel; at low speeds the system adjusts to give more of a boost, helping out when the trail is choppy or in tight

corners. This is a machine for the explorers, the trail blazers, those who want to really get out into the wilderness and need a machine as unstoppable as the legendary drover’s horse of days gone by. Knowing this, Can Am have even fitted an upgraded magneto for additional electric power — pick and choose from winches, lights and other accessories to make this off road machine truly personalised.

Potential for post-Brexit deal

The NZ International Business Forum, with support from Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association, has released a discussion paper on the potential for a future free trade agreement with the United Kingdom as the UK prepares to leave the European Union. The New Zealand and UK governments have announced their intention to begin free trade agreement negotiations after Brexit, and once the UK is in a position to negotiate independent of the EU. The UK is an important market for the New Zealand sheep and beef sector. New Zealand red meat and associated co-product exports to the United Kingdom totalled about £293 million for the year ending August 2018 with sheepmeat accounting for 86% of the sector’s total exports to the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is also a significant market for New Zealand wool, accounting for over £21 million in trade for the year ending August 2018.

SMOKE ALARMS

Save Lives

The New Zealand sheep and beef sector is supportive of the negotiation, at the earliest possible opportunity, of an ambitious, comprehensive and highquality FTA between our two countries that builds on and strengthens the existing trade relationships. Such an

FTA has the potential to benefit both the United Kingdom and New Zealand, through reducing costs, deepening existing partnerships, enhancing value chains and modernising the current trade and economic relationship. By tariff reductions and addressing non-

tariff barriers, both sides would benefit from greater access to each other’s markets which would provide consumers with a wider array of competitively priced products and manufacturers with access to high-quality, competitively priced inputs.
