Field days gears up for March event by Annette Lambly-Robinson

The Northland Field day site will soon be abuzz with activity as it gears up for its 28th event. The added bonus of the public having the opportunity to win two ‘gate’ prizes is sure to be an attraction for patrons this year. Participants will need to find items at each of the allocated sites to go into the draw for the prizes — a farming package and a lifestyle package — and can enter each of the three days if they are on site. Committee member Julia Geange said the ‘friendly’ Northland Field Days offers something for everyone. Tried and true favourites such as the tractor pull, the dog trials, the forestry contests and the quad skills will be back again. The inaugural lawn mower racing exhibitions which were popular last year will be returning for a second time this year. Weather dependant there will

be plenty of mud or dust and lots of noise. Police and the Fire Service will also have active displays throughout the event — the fire brigade will give regular fire fighting demonstrations and the police intend to have dog handling demonstrations on the Saturday providing the dogs are not called to active duty elsewhere. Head off to one of the main food areas during lunchtime and enjoy some light musical entertainment with your refreshments. Ms Geange said the committee is hopeful the equestrian fraternity will take up the challenge to organise displays showcasing the various horse related disciplines. An arena has been allocated for the purpose and invitations sent out to the various groups. “We will be finalising this in the next few days,’’ she said.

Digesting the Food Bill — fact vs fiction By Kate Wilkinson, Minister for Food Safety

There has been a lot of talk and a lot of misinformation spread over the holiday period around the proposed Food Bill. In my role as Minister for Food Safety, I am responsible for the Bill, and I’d like to take this opportunity to set the record straight. Currently New Zealand food manufacturers and sellers operate under regulations that are 30 years old. These regulations need to be updated to ensure that the food people buy is safe and that those selling food take responsibility for the food they sell. It’s a fact that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of food poisoning in the developed world. Before Christmas, an anonymous internet campaign began spreading misinformation about the Food Bill and making claims that scared a lot of people unnecessarily. They claimed that the Bill was being rushed through Parliament before anyone could be made aware of it, that the Bill would make growing your own veges a privilege, not a right, and that food safety officers with guns would soon be storming into private homes. The facts are very different. The Food Bill has gone through extensive public consultation over the past four years. In 2010, it was passed by Parliament’s Primary Production Select Committee with cross-party support, and is due to go before Parliament sometime this year. No one will come under the scope of the Food Bill unless they are selling or trading food for commercial purposes. Food grown at home for personal or family consumption, or given or exchanged for other food with friends is not within the scope of the Bill. If it becomes law, the Bill will require those involved in the commercial trade of food to operate under one of three regulatory systems, depending on the level of food safety risk involved. Those in the lowest risk category — including small traders running roadside

www.farminglifestyles.co.nz

stalls or selling their own horticultural produce at farmers markets, charity sausage sizzles and bake sales — would simply receive free ‘food handler guidance’ information. They will not need to register anywhere, and will incur no extra costs. The Government recognises that charitable and community events such as sausage sizzles, home bake sales, and other fundraising events are an important part of our Kiwi lifestyle. These will continue to occur as they always have. The Bill is designed to protect, not harm, as the Bill’s critics would have us believe. Finally, it is simply nonsense that armed Food Safety Officers would enter premises without a warrant. Food Safety Officers will not be armed and will retain the same powers that they have had for the past 30 years under the current Food

Act 1981. It is extremely disappointing that the current misinformation campaign has caused so many people to worry unnecessarily. There is nothing to fear from the Food Bill. It is all about improving food safety, updating out-dated regulations, and helping grow our economy.

Behaviourist helps horses with their human problems by Annette Lambly-Robinson

Horse behaviourist Simone Frewin says she helps ‘horses with people problems’ “I specialise in equine behaviour and approach everything from the horse’s perspective. I help horse owners to understand the reasons behind their horses’ behaviour and how they can work with these facts to get the results they want from their horse,’’ says Simone. “This approach makes for much happier horses who enjoy their work, participate in everything confidently and have a much closer relationship with their owners.

“There is nothing nicer than a horse who genuinely wants to be with you and who trusts you implicitly’’ she said, and ‘’this (behaviour) can only be achieved when the horse feels understood and protected. Training or retraining can be done at the owner’s property, or the horses can ‘live in’ at her place. She says she doesn’t use any one particular method, but adapts her techniques to suit the horse. Safety is always the objective — she says she never likes to rush, instead taking everything at the horse’s pace. “Owners are welcome to watch or actively participate in all handling

sessions and to practise with their horse while I am present. This ensures a good understanding between the horses and owner after my training sessions have ended, she said. Simone, who has worked for 35 years with horses, and her husband Bryce moved to Paparoa from Titirangi, three-and-ahalf years ago. The former sales manager said she had fallen in love with the area when as an adoption representative for Kaimanawa Heritage Horses she had been in the north doing home checks for the placement of horses from that year’s muster. When the 10-acre property on Wairere Valley Rd came up for sale it “fitted perfectly into our price range’’ offering the chance to have the lifestyle they wouldn’t have been able to afford close to the city. “We love it here — it has an amazing community spirit.’’ Bryce a locksmith still works in Auckland three days a week, but the confirmed townie says there is no way he would ever go back to the city. “It’s been a huge learning curve, but he’s jumped in boots and all and is busy building fences and doing the chores when needed, says Simone. Northern Farming Lifestyles January 2012 breeds — including four Kaimanawa horses and three geriatric retired eventers. Well in their 30s, the three former eventers who have belonged to Simone the majority of their lives, are assured they can live out their final years knowing they will never be sold on. Along with the horses are five pet sheep — Chloe, Frankie-Lynn, Moon, Charlotte and Angela who are used to cross- graze as ‘cleaner uppers’ around the place. They are also great time wasters and love nothing better than the lots of cuddles they get from Simone, Simone is a staunch supporter of saving the Kaimanawa horses and has belonged to the trust for around 15 years. “I met my first Kaimanawa at the National Field days in 1996 and was smitten with their personalities. I got talked into taking a couple from the next muster and it just went from there,’’ she said.

How well insulated are the walls of your home? One of the best times to insulate your walls is before you paint or renovate your home. This saves time and money. Many homes built before 1991 do not have insulation in their walls, and research has shown that just insulating the roof and under floor doesn’t significantly reduce the heat lost from your home, until you complete the thermal envelope. And one of the best seasons to renovate is during the summer. To reduce the mould, mildew, dampness and draughts and create a healthy, comfortable and energy efficient home

you need to complete the insulation of your home ensuring that any money spent within the home is spent wisely. Like you see in the EECA adverts on TV. It is the same in summer when the heat invades through uninsulated walls, and makes the home hot and stuffy. Airfoam is the only insulation designed specifically for insulating existing wall cavities without removing the claddings. It can be installed from the inside or outside, it is cost effective and you don’t need to move out while it is being retrofitted.

Airfoam is safe, no fuss, sound absorbing and inhibits rodents and insects. Insulating with Airfoam only takes two days to install and after a drying period, you are able to paint or wall paper. This makes it an ideal solution for landlords’ of rentals, and farmers’ who have sharemilker’s cottages. Our fully trained team can measure, quote and assist you with our easy payments options. Call today on 09 431 5223 or 0800 432 872 or email to northland@airfoam.co.nz

Is your house too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter? If your house was built before 1991, it probably does not have wall insulation. 6 REASONS why now is a great time to insulate • Within a matter of days you can transform your house into a cosy home, and prevent cold winter draughts and invasive summer heat • Create a healthier environment for your home and family health • Significantly reduce condensation and reduce mould and dampness • Save on expensive power and heating bills • Become more efficient with your heating and ventilation costs • Take advantage of our easy payment terms with the Energy Saver Fund. Once the horses have been mustered at Waiouru, DoC staff match the horses to the list of public orders and transport them to Huntly where they are drenched as they are taken off the truck and over-nighted.

“We try to ensure placements are made to experienced, knowledgeable homes. This is not a matter of training an unbroken horse — these are wild horses who may never have seen a human let alone have one touch them. Not everybody is up to the commitment it takes to work with these animals,’’ says Simone. The next Kaimanawa wild horse muster takes place in June. It costs $200 for the adoption, registration and membership to the trust. Owners are responsible for the transport costs from Huntly to their own property. Anyone wanting to adopt a horse should contact Simone on BOMB-PROOFING: Chance is not bothered when Simone pops party poppers during training — in fact he actually seems to like them 09 431 6111.

meats customer demand for organic and heritage meats

ustomers at the Farm Butchery Shop in Warkworth's High Street can feel confident that meat purchased from the shop will have been sourced directly from farmers in the region. As a result, all cuts will not only be name labelled, but will also have traceability — such as breed identification, the farm, and even ultimately the husbandry methods used for the rearing of the animals in the five tick system. The purchase of the ninety-yearold heritage butchery — in September 2011, is an exciting development for Bev and her husband Dave Crabb who have

owned Muriwai Valley Farm — now a certified organic farm at Ahuroa near Warkworth, since 1997. The couple see the butchery as an opportunity to provide the community with a variety of different tasting and textured meats and experience the improved taste and eating experience of organically raised Heritage animals. Bev is keen to hear from farmers who can supply them with suitable stock for the shop. Meat will be sourced from organic, specific breeds, including heritage breeds, and also conventional farms with suitable stock. Bev is available when needed to help farmers develop a robust farming system and optimisation of production methods to suit the consumer demand. The shop, which was refurbished in December, has been fitted out for the sale of traditional small goods and is now able to offer traditionally smoked hams and bacon. For Bev it is the culmination of a life-time of research, work and passion. Before moving to New Zealand in 1996 Bev also owned and ran an organic farm in Devon, England. Having a strong belief in the ethics of top quality local food for local people, through sustainable regional development, she has been striving since then to make her meat directly available to the public.

Northern Farming Lifestyles January 2012 As an ecologist, her philosophy is based on farming by working with the natural ecosystems. Muriwai Valley Farm is an intricate mixture of pasture, bush (woodlands), and wetlands, each ecosystem supporting the other. The pastures are cloverbased which provides natural fertility and enhanced by a high diversity of grasses and herbs. It is these deep-rooted herbs that provide the livestock with much needed minerals and trace elements to keep them healthy. No chemicals, drugs or prophylactics are used on the livestock, rather their natural immunity is supported by their stress-free and nutrient-rich lifestyles. This is all followed by comprehensive, regular soil testing. She says prior to the change Bev getting to work, feeding the piglets to industrial farming the older, as ‘poor’ or ‘unimproved’ pasture, but traditional breeds of livestock were developed around the world to suit without sacrificing productivity.” local farming conditions. will be paid according to where they sit on the couple's self-designed sliding scale schedule. “Premium prices — above the normal schedule will be paid for those who have undoubtedly put in an additional effort in producing and finishing stock,” says Dave. He says stock reared on farms using biological or organic principles have lower residue in the meat and improved flavour. The Farm Butchery also aims to give the consumer certainty over animal welfare and environmental practice concerns with the use of a farm auditing system. The shop organises transport to the abattoir at Ruakura, with the farmer paying the cost of the transport and killing. The idea of being able to

purchase breed defined meat will be a new concept to most New Zealanders. “We hope customers will be able to enjoy sampling the different tastes and quality of meat obtained from various breeds from within our region. “The concept that different breeds have different tastes is not widely appreciated outside of the celebrity chefs in overseas,” he said. “There is no doubt the level of interest in cooking and preparing healthy food sourced locally for freshness, variety and quality has grown enormously following the efforts of people like Jamie Oliver Rick Stein and Hugh Fernley Whittingstall of River Cottage fame,” said Dave. Farmers interested in supplying the Farm Butchery Shop should contact B.J.Trowbridge@xtra.co.nz.

uawai Jersey breeder, Annette Williams, moved to the Kaipara with a dream to own and develop a top conformation, high producing herd. Twenty five years later, and that dream is a reality with her boutique herd, Lostahill Jerseys. “Breeding Jerseys is challenging and rewarding,” says Annette. “I do an intensive, well-researched breeding programme to breed the cow I want, as I will be milking the resulting calves in three years’ time. “Our herd is classified each year by Jersey NZ classifiers for type at age two and four years and herd testing is done monthly. The results of these figures are used in our breeding programme. “To select bulls for the breeding programme they must meet a certain criteria — high milk weight and protein with good percentages, fertility, size,

top udders, legs and overall top conformation. No inbreeding is allowed and breeding worth is considered but not essential. “To achieve our goals we use international and NZ bulls. Lostahill Forever Blake, who is a combination of USA and NZ genetics, was used in the LIC Premiere Sire team 2003-2005. “I personally find that there is a need to use international bulls as many NZ Jersey bulls lack in milk weight and protein. It is an issue I have brought up with NZ AB companies only to be told, ‘If you’re not satisfied, use a Kiwi-cross’. “For me, using a Kiwi-cross is not an option, as I only wish to breed pure Jersey cattle that can achieve extremely high production under a grass-base system — feeding grass, silage, hay, chicory and turnips. I guess the proof is in the pudding.

Fluid Fertilisers are the way forward

9

by Dr Bert Quin

Annette’s awards at the 2012 Ruawai garden club rose and flower show

the champion rose with Loving Memory and Tom Thumb. “When I won my first champion rose, I was just so surprised. I spoke to a group of local competitors saying, ‘If it was a Jersey cow, I’d know exactly how to present and show her — unlike the rose, which was all guess work’. “Now that Anj and Jo have left home, I like to encourage children into calf clubs. This year, two calves were shown from Lostahill at Central Calf Club and were placed Champion and Reserve Champion Jersey.” Annette says she was impressed with the children’s effort and it was a proud moment.

Fluid fertilisers are defined in New Zealand as high-solids products containing only 10–20% water (just enough to allow them to be kept agitated and spread through specialised equipment). Unlike what are commercially defined as ‘fpa’ (fine particle application) in which all ingredients are finely ground regardless of benefit and cost, each individual ingredient in fluid fertilisers is present in a range of particle sizes to suit that nutrient. The main factors deciding the particle size range chosen for each nutrient are (a) whether it is possible and intended for some or all of that nutrient to be taken up through the leaves, as in a foliar fertiliser, and (b) what sizing will allow passage of the particular ingredient through the plant canopy to the soil, with as many individual particles as possible, with a totally even spread, to optimise nutrient uptake. ‘Liquid’ fertilisers got a deservedly bad name in New Zealand beginning in the 1980s, because of blatantly dishonest and misleading claims that the tiny amounts of nutrient being applied per hectare at the rates recommended by the seller would maintain production. Typically, these products were applying less than one kg/ha of the key nutrients, and trivial amounts of trace elements. They made huge profits for their suppliers, but cost farmers dearly. Several such companies added growth promotants and ‘greening’ agents to their products, to create an impressive but fleeting visual benefit. This type of con has arisen again recently, but wrapped in a more sophisticated, single-invoice ‘package’ of for on-farm ‘advice’ and application. Nutrient application rates remain massively below maintenance requirements. Unfortunately, this has distracted attention from the enormous benefits of true fluid fertilisers, as described above. Fluid fertilisers have all the advantages

Sliding doors

of sold fertilisers — relatively low cost products designed to maintain and improve soil fertility and plant growth — but avoid their disadvantages of dust, segregation of components during handling, transport and spreading, and entry of nutrients into waterways. In addition, fluid fertilisers offer a combination of important advantages — extremely accurate placement (thereby allowing deposition of nutrients into waterways to be avoided), extremely even coverage of much smaller-sized particles than granules, optimising both leaf and root uptake, and the easy addition of both solid and liquid additives, additional nutrients, seed and insecticide. In particular, the additives can include cutting-edge products that greatly increase both P and N efficiency and reduce losses. For all these reasons, I believe that ‘fluids’ are the way to go. The water content is simply the carrier, the means to ensure that the nutrients and additives required to optimise productivity on each given farm can be applied in the most cost-effective manner, in any terrain, in any weather. Northern Farming Lifestyles

An idyllic Hokianga destination by Annette Lambly-Robinson

The owners of The Tree House, a retreat-style eco lodge inspired by permaculture principles and surrounded by native bush and wetlands, talk about how it came about.

W

hen 30 years ago Pauline and Phil Evans tossed sought after science research jobs in Australia to live in a secluded, undeveloped area of Northland many may have questioned their rationale. Back in 1981 Australians coming to New Zealand to live and work was practically unheard of — economic times were tough and many Kiwis were beating their feet to earn bigger dollars in Australia — not the other way round. But for the couple, the eight

hectares near Kohukohu, next to the peaceful Hokianga Harbour was just what they had been searching for. They had long harboured a desire to move out of the city and live a sustainable farming lifestyle. “While on holiday in New Zealand we found ourselves at Kohukohu. It was here we met up with a fellow Australian who told us about this piece of land a local farmer had subdivided off. We took a look and loved the prettiness — it was a real gem. The fact it was in

a heritage area also attracted us. With the village nearby it was remote — but not absolutely isolated. There are very few places like this in Australia,” said Pauline. “Back home we both had amazing jobs we loved — but we both felt we were at that next stage in our lives — I guess it was time to follow our dreams — so we decided to chuck our jobs and buy the place.” There were no roads, no electricity, no house, a lot of gorse, and Pauline was already pregnant with son Rhys. After building the longed-for wooden house, Phil found various jobs around

the district while they decided what best to do with the land. Permaculture ideals attracted them both, so they set about fencing off the hillsides to allow the native bush to regenerate. A few cattle and sheep were run to manage the weeds and grass outside the bush area. A government scheme helped them tackle the gorse and they planted shelter belts, macadamia nuts, fruit orchards and large gardens. "Now with two children and the job situation up and down we wondered at times whether or not we should go back to Australia,” added Pauline.

Northern Farming Lifestyles January 2012 When the mood takes there is an abundance of galleries, cafés, restaurants, heritage precincts and historic places such as Clendon House close by or within an hour’s drive. For those wanting more creature comforts there is a self-contained holiday home on the harbour front at Kohukohu. After 30 years, the couple are still as in love with the place as they always have been. There are no plans for full retirement. Son Rhys, an artist and photographer, and his family, are based nearby to help manage the business and build up the art gallery in the village which features the works of extended family as well as locals. A planned Twin Coast cycle way has already partially opened and once extended to the Hokianga Harbour is expected to encourage more visitors to Walk along the boardwalks though the fern the area. and trees to the eastern entrance to the Lodge

A light at the front door as evening falls, offers a welcoming haven

"The idea of providing accommodation came about by accident.” “Around 1986 travellers who had missed the last ferry to Rawene began turning up at the property looking for a camping ground which showed in the AA guide, but was in fact not here. “We let them camp on the property and some even slept on our floor. I guess the idea was born.” Phil put up a note at the ferry wharf telling people if they had missed the ferry they could 'go on down to the Evan's place'. In 1987, another Government scheme offered the couple the opportunity to do a feasibility study on the prospects of an accommodation business. While the feasibility study showed it was not a goer they decided because of changeable weather conditions to build backpacker accommodation rather than a camping ground as originally intended. They built the first lodge on to the back of their own house to keep costs down and to take advantage of the already established amenities. At that stage, they also connected to electricity. “We had been using a generator or windmill up until then, but were not confident we would be able to fully sustain enough electricity for larger numbers,” said Pauline. It seemed the time was right and The Tree House, on several levels and named for the surrounding bush, has flourished ever since. Set in subtropical gardens, forest, woodland and restored wetlands the lodge provides basic hostel, cabin and camping accommodation. "Many enjoy the mixture of bush and exotic trees which provides not just a garden, but mystic landscapes with glimpses of harbour inlets and ever changing views.”

ea tree oil has been marketed for decades now as a way to kill bacteria and get rid of fleas, ticks and other parasites. The same can’t be said for the cabbage tree and that’s something that Sally Beale, God’s Garden owner and naturopath of 16 years, would like to change. According to Sally, oil from the flower of the cabbage tree is not only antibacterial it is anti fungal and anti inflammatory and can be used in a range of different ways. The plant was used by both Maori and Europeans to do everything from treating scrapes and cuts, treating diarrhoea

Sally was turned on to the benefits of cabbage tree oil after reading ‘Dancing Leaves — The story of New Zealand’s Cabbage Tree’ a book that explored the uses, history and cultural implications of the cabbage tree.

WORKSHOPS

Sally extracts the oils by infusion — the process of soaking flowers in an oil or some other liquid, although she has changed and refined the process to optimise the amount of active ingredients she gets out of the oil. “There are certain things which are quite specific about the way I do it. Those are things that I’ve learnt to do myself and they actually make quite a difference to how effective the oil is.” Sally trained and had been working as a naturopath for more than 16 years

before discovering the benefits of cabbage tree oil, creating remedies mainly for people. “When I first produced the products I thought of mothers, babies and children.” That is reflected in her range of human-orientated products which include baby massage oils, a ‘women’s oil’ amongst other oils and treatments. It was essentially an opportunity to be on the 2006 TVNZ show, Dragon’s Den, which inspired her to explore the animal health potential for cabbage tree oil. “I started to think, are there any other applications for the cabbage tree flower.”

Soil workshops on offer

Neal Kinsey, of Kinsey Agricultural Services, in Charleston, Missouri, is known as ‘the dean’ of soil fertility. His visit is being sponsored by Golden Bay Dolomite Limited and the Neal Kinsey NZ group and will include Taupo and Invercargill. He is recognised as one of the foremost practitioners of the Albrecht — style soil fertility balancing concept and is the author of the book ‘Hands on Agronomy’. His sponsors say many of those who have attended the previous years’ courses have followed up on his teaching and advice. As a result they have proved to themselves and others that biological farming is the new way forward. ‘Many have reported positive changes to pasture, animal health and profit, despite what have been recognised as challenging seasonal weather conditions and recessionary times’. The Taupo course will be held at the Huka Falls Lodge from March 5 to 7 and in Invercargill at the Ascot Hotel on March 12 to 14. Kinsey’s sponsors say farmers often become bogged down in the detail of a sophisticated soil audit and are confused as to whom to believe. ‘Neal conveys the message of soil fertility in a simple to understand manner that just makes sense to his audience,’ says his promotional material. ‘He offers world-wide examples of how and why the system works including examples from New Zealand. What we learn from the successful Albrecht system of soil balancing is that when

calcium and magnesium and all other nutrients including the micro-nutrients are in proper balance in the soil, crops thrive, animal health improves, weed and insect pressures lessen and yields and soils improve season after season’. In addition to the Kinsey presentation, a leading Australian animal nutrition specialist, Peter Norwood, will conduct a two- hour presentation called ‘Dust to Dust’, covering some of the soil balance issues he see’s in Australian soils, how these imbalances then affect plants, animals and ultimately humans and the opportunity of farmers going forward as nutritionally dense food producers. The course costs $620.00 excluding GST. Promotional material supporting the worshops add that the event sponsors of the workshops are ‘passionate about the services and products we provide as healthy soils are a prerequisite for healthy crops, healthy animals and healthy people. It is the informed farmer who is at the forefront of this chain. The goal of all farming operations must be to produce top quality nutrient dense food for our generation, our children and our grandchildren’.

Mulched Instantly!

4m high gorse…

To this...

Clearing this hillside at the back of Warkworth shows the steepness of the terrain and just how dense the gorse was. The final result is impressive when you consider that in a little more than a day we were able to make such a transformation. No matter how big or how small, 2 acres or 2000 acres, we can mulch any size gorse, all other noxious weeds and trees to below ground level while preserving native vegetation. Using track grips fitted to our digger means our machinery can reach almost anywhere. The major difference is that the mulcher gives an instant result, the gorse is there one moment and gone the next. The mulch is able to rot down and put nutrients into the soil while stopping soil run off when it rains. New innovations help the dairy industry keep cool Dairy farmers have to battle the heat during summer in a more significant way than the average New Zealander. Milking sheds are decidedly uncomfortable in the hotter months as machinery and animals fill the space with excess heat, dust and flies. In addition milk must be chilled to exacting temperatures… an exercise which is costly using refrigeration technology alone. Innovation has long been the advantage of the Kiwi dairy industry — we lead the world because New Zealand farmers embrace good ideas and clever solutions. So it is, that something as simple as a refreshing mist of cool water has been harnessed to beat the heat in our rural sector… in the form of a pair of new systems which have passed through their trials with flying colours, the DairyKool and the MasterKool. The concept of evaporative cooling isn’t a new one — it’s the principle behind cool sea breezes. Simply put, tiny particles of water can

absorb some of the heat energy from hot dry air. By using this principle, an ultra-fine mist diffused by a high pressure pump increases the efficiency of your existing chiller unit, returning up to a staggering 46% improvement in energy efficiency. In recent trials (undertaken in Opunake, New Zealand), milk vats were reaching their desired temperatures on average two hours more quickly, running refrigeration equipment for a shorter period of time and saving money. Fonterra have given the DairyKool high praise, with the system officially approved by the Fonterra Food Safety Technical Division as having huge potential for the industry. Equally impressive is the MasterKool, a system which utilises a far more widespread mist of cool water particles to drop the temperature throughout the entire milking shed. By doing so it reduces stress in the herd, reduces odour, promotes hygiene and best of all

Septic Tank Owners

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and

b blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™.

Employment 90-day trial period not an unqualified licence to dismiss employees an employee before the commencement of the employment. Negotiating retrospectively can be costly.

by Bill Guest, Farmers of New Zealand

The Employment Court recently ruled that a farm employee had the right 90-day trial period Employers can make an offer of to issue a personal grievance claim employment to a prospective employee against his employer in regards to the that includes a trial period of up to 90 90-day trial period. This case raised a days. Trial periods are voluntary and must be agreed in writing and negotiated number of issues. in good faith as part of the employment His new employer sent the employee confirmation by way of a letter that he would be offered employment. An employment agreement was not enclosed with the letter of offer. The employee, in the initial negotiations with his new employer, stated that he would not take up any job offer that involved a 90-day trial period. The new employer verbally agreed to this. The employee moved on to the new employer’s farm and after commencing work, his new employer presented him with an employment agreement, in which it maintained that a 90-day trial period was stipulated. The employer did not advise the employee that he was

entitled to obtain independent advice, nor did he give me him a reasonable opportunity to seek that advice. The employee felt trapped and pressured by the employer. The employee feared that he had no choice but to sign the agreement and did so in the belief that he thought he may be dismissed after he had started work. The employer consequently dismissed the employee and claimed that the 90-day trial period disqualified the employee from claiming he was dismissed unjustifiably.

agreement. A trial period can’t be offered to a new employee who was previously employed in the same workplace.

While an employer is not required to provide written reasons for an employee’s dismissal, during the trial period there is an expectation that an employer, acting in good faith, would inform the employee as to why he or she has been dismissed. Any provisions about giving notice in the employment agreement will need to be adhered to.

An employee who is dismissed before the end of a trial period can’t raise a personal grievance on the grounds of unjustified dismissal. They can raise a personal grievance on other grounds, such as discrimination or harassment

Employees on trial periods are entitled to all other minimum employment rights, for example in relation to health and safety, employment agreements, minimum pay, annual holidays, public holidays, leave and equal pay.

This Court decision reaffirms that all employers are required to present and negotiate an employment agreement with

“It’s Time for Lime!”

Which Inoculant for Maize & Whole Crop Silages? There are a number of factors to consider when making maize or whole crop silages. These include crop maturity at harvest, harvesting conditions, stack configuration, feeding out, previous experience plus the type and actions of the bacteria in the inoculants. Conventional silage inoculants have been formulated to supply high levels of homofermentative lactic acid producing bacteria. These speed up the rate of fermentation and reduce ensiling losses, resulting in more silage with improved palatability that is used utilised more efficiently leading to higher production. Enzyme only products tend not to be favoured as they merely provide an energy source to the resident population of bacteria, which produce a number of acids one of which is butyric, which is unpalatable. These homofermentative inoculants have also been demonstrated to improve silage stability after the pit or stacks have been opened. However, in some cases aerobic spoilage, due to growth of yeasts and moulds, have still been an issue. This has often been associated with drier mature crop silages, where compaction may have proved difficult, or with large stacks where it takes several days to clear the face. Inoculants containing high levels of Lactobacillus buchneri, which is a heterofermentative bacteria that produces both lactic and acetic acids, have been used, where silage instability has been an issue. Acetic acid inhibits growth and multiplication of specific species of yeasts that contribute to silage heating. High levels of L. buchneri are required to produce sufficient acetic acid to be effective. The FDA stipulated a minimum level of 400,000 cfu/g wet material for claims of improved aerobic stability. The question then, is how to decide on which inoculant to use to produce the best silage. Reviewing the factors listed in the first paragraph will help answer this question. Consideration

needs to be given to both ensiling and feeding out, as conditions during either may be conducive to aerobic spoilage of silage. The basic principle is that one should use homofermatative lactic acid producing bacteria, if all the conditions are favourable, as they tend to be more palatable. However, mature crops tend to be more difficult to compact, providing easier access of air after opening, so are inherently less stable after opening. Inadequate compaction may also arise when the time required for adequate compaction through rolling is exceeded by the rate of harvesting, or if layering of the crop is too thick to be adequately compacted. In both these cases an inoculant containing L. buchneri might be the better option. Once silage stacks have been opened then some other factors need to be considered. First is the rate of silage removal from the face of the stack, relative to its size. Air penetrates the silage from the open face, facilitating growth of yeasts and moulds, so sufficient silage needs to be removed from across the face of the stack to limit their growth. The extent to which air penetrates depends on the method used to extract the silage. Machinery that cuts the silage from stacks result in a clean, tidy faces, whereas loaders may create air channels into stacks and leave untidy faces, which may heat up more quickly. In cases where it takes several days to remove silage from the entire silage face, or when it is difficult to achieve a tidy face, then use of an inoculant containing L. buchneri could be considered. In summary, an inoculant containing homofermentative lactic acid producing bacteria is generally the preferred option under good ensiling and feeding out conditions, whereas one containing L. buchneri would suit challenging ensiling or feeding out conditions, or on farms where heating silages have been an issue previously.

Battle against facial eczema

Read the paper Prevention is the only way to minimise the impacts of this “terrible disease which costs NZ farmers millions of dollars each year” online

www.farminglifestyles.co.nz

Recently developed products are now available which can help farmers in the battle against facial eczema. The fungicide carbendazim, the active ingredient in products like Sporeguard has been developed as a more effective option to zinc supplements. The product controls the production of toxic spores and therefore removes the need to use toxic doses of zinc. Trials involving animals on treated pastures have reported significant increases in production and live-weight gains when compared to zinc treated animals. One application has been proven to control the spore-producing fungus for up to 40 days, but to be effective it is critical the first application goes on before pasture spore counts rise above 10,000 spores/gram, which can be as early as January. A good even coverage is also required.

PROGRESSIVE RED DEVON

Come and see us at the Rural Pavilion site 657

Ravensdown vet, Gavin Goble, says not all animals display obvious symptoms of facial eczema yet may still have sufficient liver damage to affect production, reproductive performance and long term survivability.

Prevention is the only way to minimise the impacts of this terrible disease which costs NZ farmers millions of dollars each year. During the warm moist weather at this time of the year, toxic spores of the fungus Pithomyces chartarum are produced at the base of the pasture and these cause liver damage when eaten. For many years, zinc has successfully been the mainstay in preventing facial eczema either by oral drenching, water treatment or adding to feed. The disadvantage is that to be effective, doses of zinc need to be high which reduces water intake and appetite leading to weight and production losses.

Taking the hard work out of heavy labour Pushing heavy objects in a wheelbarrow can be hard work at the best of times, and even more so if the pushing is up hill. The solution — a newly launched motorised barrow — to take the hard out of work. For years Kaitaia former earthworks engineer, Steve Baldry, reckoned there had to be an easier way of getting all those numerous chores done such as getting the firewood up the slope to the house. Since Steve owns a lifestyle block a wheelbarrow is an important and much used tool. “Feeding out, picking up the horse poo, carrying fencing material, firewood, even building the house — I’m am using it all the time,” he says.

Steve Baldry

About five years ago he started searching both nationally and internationally for an electric barrow to help with the many tasks. “I’d heard of petrol ones, but there was nothing electrical available.” He wanted it electrical so it was simple and easy to use. Being a typical Kiwi bloke when he couldn’t find what he needed on the market he set about inventing it. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” he laughs. Just over a year ago he decided to try his hand at adapting a standard wheelbarrow. It was a simple concept but getting it refined to work its best took a bit of time. He made several prototypes, trialling them himself and lending two out to friends to also trial. “The results were really positive, they all stood up well to the various tasks.” He decided to go with the best (and gruntiest) and approached the company who made the ‘Tradesmen’ barrow — NZ Wheelbarrows Ltd — to produce them. The Thames company liked the idea and agreed to build them.

The motorised barrow operates on a battery powered motor that has a plug in charger. It can free wheel as a normal barrow or at the flick of a switch become motorised. Speed and power is controlled by the hand-held throttle and brake on the handle. On level ground under power the barrow will travel at a quick walking pace. While heavier than a normal barrow — around 36kg, compared to 10kg, the operator will not notice the difference as all the weight is over the front wheel which balances and stabilises the barrow. Power will last for around eight hours

and will actually charge itself when going down hill through the regenerative braking system. Most people simply plug it onto the charger at night. The first of the ‘yardlab’ (baldry spelt backwards) barrows are fresh off the assembly line and now on sale. Steve says he has already had a lot of interest from lifestyle block owners and expects sole or small contractors could also find the yardlab very useful. Yardlab barrows are available by order only through the website www.yardlab.co.nz and while Steve keeps some in stock, expect a three-week turnaround for normal delivery.
