“This is great news for a region that has suffered numerous droughts over the years,” says Mr Guy. “Storing water means we can use it in dry spells, giving farmers and growers certainty and a real boost to the local economy.” Nor thland Regional Council are also investing in the study which will focus on potential irrigation options in the mid North and Kaipara areas. “A g r i c u l t u r e and horticulture play a major part in Northland’s economy. Last year the Ministry for Primary Industries contributed $75,000 towards a report examining the potential of irrigation in Northland and this is another important step forward. “The report identified that with a reliable water supply, Northland has a natural advantage for high-value horticulture as the climate allows the growth of subtropical fruit. “We know that any increase in horticulture generates a major increase in employment because of the high amount of labour per hectare required.” The potential of irrigation and water storage is highlighted in the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan which was launched in February 2016. “So far there has only been limited irrigation development in the region. As a Government we are strong supporters of irrigation and water storage because it can be a major boost to regional development, creating jobs and exports.
What’s happening over the cattle stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Northern Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the
top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one. The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

“A recent report by NZIER found that irrigation contributes $2.2 billion to the national economy and this has the potential to grow even further. “Modern irrigation infrastructure also has the potential to improve the environmental, social and recreational outcomes from the use and management of our water, within a strong regulatory framework.” Crown Irrigation Investments provides both development funding and construction capital to irrigation schemes across New Zealand.

Storage space secured for regional council An increasingly busy Northland Regional Council will soon have a new central storage facility in Whangarei’s industrial area to house an array of council equipment. The council began storing equipment at a sub-leased site on Robert Street, however council chairman Bill Shepherd says since the increase in fieldwork the site has become ‘vastly inadequate’. “Storage is now required for additional boats, vessel quarantine facilities, oil spill equipment, bikes, trailers, kayaks, monitoring buoys, furniture, traps, poisons, events equipment, civil defence emergency gear, hydrology, air quality and farm dairy effluent equipment and various tools.” Cr Shepherd says the council’s equipment is currently scattered over several sites including its Water Street head office, the Robert Street facility and a storage shed in the Lower Port Road area, the latter on a short-term lease and currently for sale. “During certain times of the year, extra space also has to be leased shortterm for Community Pest Control Area pest traps.” In order to consolidate equipment in an appropriately sized facility and avoid the risk of having to relocate again and rising rental rates the council have spent $600,000 from a property fund on the 2,167-square-metre fully-fenced site in Union East Street. The property already had an existing shed with a 200-square-metre floor

area that could house maritime and biosecurity equipment and the council will shortly call for tenders for construction of a second shed 10 metres deep by 35–40 metres wide, to be divided into a number of five-metre wide storage units. Cr Shepherd says each powered and alarmed unit will have a roughly three-metre roller door, a side access door and the tender also calls for construction of an up to 60-squaremetre wash down bay, including sump, for washing boats and bikes. Tenders
for the several hundred thousand dollar build will be called in early 2017 and run over summer, with the contract expected to be awarded soon after. “The new site is easily accessible to the Port Road and Marsden Cove boat ramps as well as State Highways 1 and 14 and when complete, will be adequate for both current and future storage requirements.” Cr Shepherd says the council hopes to see the new facility completed by the end of 2017.

Even the Kaiwaka/Mangawhai Road has changed — there are so many houses and a lot of the farms have diversified,” says Brad. “People have sold sections of their land so they can afford to do other things for themselves. It has worked well and is a positive thing.” After studying Marijke travelled to London and the United States to work and hike the Appalachian Trail and went

to Canada snowboarding. She also visited Nepal. When she returned to New Zealand she worked in Auckland but says her heart found it’s way back to Mangawhai last year. “It’s so good living back in the area — it feels like I am home and whole again,” says Marijke. “I didn’t really enjoy Auckland — a part of me was always here and I would come and visit friends in the weekend and it was always hard to return to the city. Living in the Kaipara is great, there is lots of fishing, hiking and hunting. “I grew up surfing with my dad Martin and brother Tyson. We love the beach life, and my mother Yvonne passed on her love of horses and the country to me,” says Marijke. Brad says being a fencing contractor means he meets interesting people. “I had worked on farms and then I worked for a friend fencing and decided to start my own business.” Brad makes most style fences including batten, and post and rail. He can also help design fences customers may like including Punga or fancy and artistic styles. “I mostly do rural fencing and travel around the area, and I am happy to help with creative styles,” says Brad. “Lifestyle block owners often discover after purchase that they don’t have enough fences and call me to help them
sort out what they need. “One lady had an old fence too close to her house and in her vision line so we moved it out of sight and it looked great.” Lifestyle blocks often need fences and paddocks rearranged and Brad says normally farms have post and rail or the conventional seven wire batten fence. “It generally depends on what look the client is after and what stock you have, such as sheep or cattle. People often go for a drive and look at the different styles available and what look they like. “I have built a chicken fence for a customer. It was 1.2 metres high and we put chicken wire around the inside and railed it. He gave them a lot of space to live in with toys and things and because they were happy they never tried to fly out.” Brad says deciding if you need new fencing is relatively easy to realise. “When you move onto a property and want to check if your fences are in a good state, walk the whole fence line and check if your wires are tight. “Make sure there are no broken wires or loose and rotting posts. If in doubt call me and I am happy to come and have a look if you are in my area. “If you have the old batten fences with moss all over them and they are in disrepair it’s often cheaper to build a whole new one and it should last a good

MARIJKE WAS ALWAYS DRAWN TO COUNTRY LIFE AND SAYS PART OF HER WAS ALWAYS IN MANGAWHAI
20 years.” Brad says different animals need different types of fence. “Sheep need seven wire batten, cows you can get away with five wires and you can make it electric but if it is a boundary fence you require at least a seven wire batten. Bulls need a lot of power and solid fencing to keep them in, especially if they fight each other as
they get boisterous and can easy break through a fence. With rural fencing, internal fences can be put where ever you like. If you want a triangle paddock, a hexagon or octagon we can make one, and in the near future we will be designing creative custom made entrance gates. These will certainly add a flair to any property.”

When Alison Sutherland decided to keep goats on her new lifestyle property little did she know this decision would completely change her life.
C
oming from a research background, and as a selfconfessed workaholic, Alison spent four years learning about the Arapawa goats. The more she learnt the more she became fascinated with the part they played in early New Zealand history, and is now sharing it in a book she has written called No Ordinary Goat:
The Story of New Zealand’s Arapawa Goats. “The old English goats that came out with Captain Cook became extinct in England but they remained on Arapaoa Island. In my book I’m able to prove the dates that they arrived on the island and show they survived and multiplied. It became a very fascinating story. There is lots of DNA background

proving they are unique in the world, so effectively they belong nowhere else but New Zealand,” she said. It all started when Alison and her husband Alan moved from Petone to Masterton in search of a quieter life, and purchased four hectares of land on which to keep some animals. “We had never had farm animals before so I started doing some research to see what goats might be appropriate. I thought we would go for the smallest goats we could find because we don’t know goats. I happened to read a book called Arapawa: Once Upon an Island by Betty Rowe and I thought they would be perfect.” Not only would they be able to have some goats on their property Alison was excited to know they have a significant history and belong to New Zealand. “Two years later I got my first pair of Arapawa goats, a beautiful unrelated pair that came to us on a truck in a box, and so it began.” From that moment on Alison was hooked and wanted to share this unique breed with the rest of the country. She decided to set up a registry and founded the New Zealand Arapawa Goat Association. Her two original goats, Maana and Dobby, are first on the list. Now the goats can be found in almost all parts of New Zealand including the Waikato. Marion Rogerson owns and operates Sam and his Farmyard Friends, a mobile farmyard experience based in Hamilton. She keeps two Arapawa Goats and was drawn to them because of their size and their temperament. She first
purchased three triplets, one of whom has passed away, from a doe in Waihi so that her children could raise them for calf club. “I wanted to have something a little different that we could have as part of the mobile farmyard after calf club. They also have a decent history behind them,” said Marion. However the Department of Conservation considers the animals a pest and had programmes in place to eradicate them from the island. Alison says she understands DOC’s position, however, believes there are other options. With a little talking she managed to convince DOC to remove some of the goats instead of killing them and these were then added to the registry on the mainland. There are currently 217 fertile Arapawa goats on the registry in New Zealand. “They are recognised as being critically endangered in the rest of the world but not in New Zealand. Six were sent to the United Kingdom and six sent to the United States of America. In the United Kingdom they can’t survive as there is not enough gene spread. In the US they are doing everything they can to keep the genetics.” Alison was motivated to write the book and put the facts out there, so that other people will want to do something
7
Arapawa goats play an important role in New Zealand’s early European history
about ensuring the breed does not disappear. “This is New Zealand’s early European history and for someone who just has a little bit of land, even an acre or two, they are the most wonderful paddock pets.” As for the future of the Arapawa goat? Alison would like to see them officially recognised by the New Zealand government as endangered, and the eradication programmes changed to being just about controlling the population on the island. “I want them to survive. To me that is the most important thing. We have no right to eradicate an animal, because they belong to future generations.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES January 2017 ADVERTORIAL
Assumption VS Reality by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
With the increasing global demand for certified organic food, comes a myriad of assumptions and fairy tales, fabricated by the chemical cowboys, in an endeavour to continue to sell their toxic chemical products. Hello cowboys! The consumers have already changed and are demanding safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner. The chemical age is on the way out, as consumers call out for healthy, wholesome food produced from healthy, wholesome soils that maintain a healthy, wholesome environment. Here at Agrissentials we specialise in multi-mineral, microbial rich, live, living fertilisers designed to bring health and vitality back to soils and back to our food, together with enhancement of the environment, the waterways, the lakes and the fore shores. This new consumer demand for better quality food opens the door to all aspects of food production, plus better returns for better quality food. The change from agro-chemical production to natural certified production is seamless. It all happens in the soil with Agrissentials best on earth Organx™ fertilisers by increasing the microbial wealth and the multi-mineral value in the soil. The other two critical factors are sunlight and water. Get this equation
right and production happens. Agrissentials multi-mineral system is The Key to plant, animal and human immunity. Instead of just synthetic N, P and K, Agrissentials fertilisers have a full complement of macro elements and trace minerals, necessary to build strong immunity to fight pest and disease. The natural minerals in Agrissentials fertilisers are converted by the microorganisms to a plant available form, and wrapped in humus, so that they don’t leach from the soil. The plant’s roots reach into the humus and extract the minerals they need. Within this system these minerals are recognised at the cellular level of the plant — the ultimate level for plant uptake, growth and energy. The plant then passes these minerals onto the animals and humans, which in turn helps to build their immune systems. It’s a cunning old natural plan that has been operating on the planet for millions of years. Please, also note that the humus manufactured by the microorganisms not only holds the minerals from leaching, but also increases the water retaining quality in the soil.
As a commercial grower for twenty odd years and a commercial fertiliser manufacturer for 30 years, I have experienced both sides of the fence, both the natural and the chemical. Whoever set up the natural system installed all the checks and balances to sustain life on the planet — the ultimate being a full complement of natural minerals, to build immunity into all life. The introduction of the NPK balance sheet theory and its lack of natural minerals has opened up a wide corridor
for the introduction of pharmaceutical rescue remedies, sorry no cures. If you are looking for an opportunity to increase revenue on the farm, think seriously about organics, and give us a call on 0800 THE KEY for a FREE INFO PACK, that’s 0800 843 539 to find out how we can partner with you to find a better way of farming. Perry Allen was originally a butcher by trade and now lives on a lifestyle property with an array of animals including sheep, muscovy ducks, beef and his much loved and appreciated Kunekune pigs.
P
erry and his wife Karen have five acres of fruit and nut trees, which he says they constantly battled to keep up with and, as far as landcare goes, they believe Kunekune pigs are the best animal for this. “Everyone should have these pigs to help maintain difficult land. They are foragers and clean around all the trees, fence lines
and other areas. I don’t feed them anything other than the grass around the property and a few nuts,” said Perry. The animals are all aptly named, there is Taimana the farm dog, Roast the sheep and of course the heart breaker, baby George Kune along with Boris, Babe, Betty, Nudge and Screech. “They are the only true grazing pig and

my guys just keep mowing my lawns, and they do a marvellous job keeping the area well-trimmed. They love interacting with people and are reasonably clean and tidy.” A butcher by trade, Perry says Kunekune meat is lovely to eat if they are fed this way. “I have made beautiful maple bacon in the past. The mistake people make is feeding them food scraps. They don’t need that as it makes them fat, they just need to forage on the grasses. “The pigs are fun and very social. Their favourite pastime is to have their bellies scratched by anybody and everybody — ours even sit on command.” The idea was to raise the pigs for meat but Perry now says they are too cute to kill. “If you raise them like we do, without scraps of food they are beautiful. Kunekune means ‘fat bellied pig’. They get fat looking at kikuyu grass and they don’t dig up the ground like other pigs. If there are wet spots they do try and make a wallow, they are amazing.” Perry says unlike Saddleback and Wessex pigs, he finds the Kunekune not as destructive and they clean around the flax and other plants, and keep his five acres of land looking like a park. “I have had other pigs, mainly meat pigs, but these guys are something else. In 1978 there were just 50 left in the world, I think they weren’t popular because of their size, but then a few people got together and formed the Kunekune Association and now they have made a comeback,” said Perry. “The story that they came on Captain Cook’s ship is debatable. I think they came out with the early whalers as food and they traded with the Maori. They fell

in love with them and used them for the high fat content, because back then they preserved everything in fat.” He says the pigs are great for any property, including lifestyle blocks. “I got told not to have them but I have found them to be amazing. They are small but good.” Kunekunes take 116 days for gestation which is two days longer than other pigs. Like all pigs, the biggest problem is smothering by the mother, but Perry’s go into sow crates if the mother is inclined to lay on top of them. “It is for their safety they are separated. “My little white sow Babe doesn’t like babies so I take them off her now and raise them on a bottle. “I have a blind one but no one told her she is blind and she’s running around chasing her brothers and sisters — they are so easy to look after and user friendly. a lot of hunting and eating meat, but now with my Kunekunes, raising them on my property, seeing them every day and having conversations with them, it becomes very personal and I am thinking of becoming a vegan.” Perry says there is no such thing as a miniature pig. The standard Kunekune is 52cm at the shoulder and can get to 200kg. “Someone started a rumour as to having miniature pigs for sale but there’s no such thing. I believe the photos were a baby Kunekune in a teacup — a very large teacup at that. “People buy what they think is a miniature pig and it doesn’t stay miniature, and then they dump them. “I can’t speak highly enough of Kunekune, for the lifestyle block and for people who want to care for their land.”

Master of mulching
13
by Andy Bryenton
Lifestyle blocks can be rewarding and picturesque — after all the hard work of clearing scrub and taming invasive undergrowth is done, of course. Breaking in new ground on this kind of scale may be too small a task to warrant a massive tractor slasher or bobcat, but it’s too much for the average mower. That’s where Kiwi company Masport have found a brand new niche for a new breed of ride-on machine — a beefedup, hard-core cousin to the average lawn tractor which they call the Crossjet. A cross breed of conventional mower and the kind of big slasher deployed by farmers to make new pasture from rugged regrowth, the Crossjet chews through its meal of blackberry, kikuyu and reeds with an insatiable appetite, shredding it all down with a pair of flail blades driven by a high-capacity V-twin engine. In a practical test, clearing half an acre neglected for over three years, the Crossjet was undaunted by growth up to waist height. The two-wheel-drive version — perfect for level ground — uses its weight and a set of tube steel nudge bars to crush even the gnarliest growth under, where a seriously heavy-duty cutting deck takes matters in hand. Even small wattle saplings, immature gorse and other pithy fare came out the other side as finger-length mulch,
without the engine missing a beat. Lining up on some serious overgrowth — head high in some places and laced with blackberry canes — the Crossjet plowed right in, and with some artful use of the machine’s small turning circle and hand-operated forward and reverse throttle, the lot was soon razed flat. In fact, it was never necessary to engage the optional diff lock to get out of tight spots — an option that’s there if the green stuff really gets stroppy. About the only criticism one could level at this machine is that the throttle control — which must be constantly operated by your right hand — needs a firm grip, and perhaps a glove if you’re in the saddle for extended periods of time. Even after a solid hour of chopping, it had only depleted half a tank of gas, too. For just a little more than the average ride-on — and less than a commercial zero-turn — it’s the perfect companion for lifestyle block owners with big ground to cover.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES January 2017 ADVERTORIAL
Relationship between pasture dry matter yield and soil Olsen P from a series of long-term field trials by A. G. Sinclair - a; P. D. Johnstonea; L. C. Smitha; A. H. C. Robertsb; M. B. O’Connorb; J. D. Mortona
Abstract Forty-six data-sets from a series of 17 long-term field trials measuring the effects of rates and forms of phosphate (P) fertiliser on pasture production and soil fertility in New Zealand were used to characterise the relationship between pasture dry matter (DM) yield in any year (expressed as relative yield, RY) and soil Olsen P test at the end of the annual DM measurement period. Average coefficients of variation in the measurement of these parameters were 7% and 17% for DM yield and Olsen P, respectively. The results failed to demonstrate that the RY at any site in any year could be reliably assessed from a common relationship between RY and the Olsen P test. However, the mean relationship did take the general “diminishing returns” form as expressed by the Mitscherlich equation, and as Olsen P levels increased the probability
of low RY decreased. There was no evidence that RY increased with increase in Olsen P test values above 20, with the exception of the one yellow-brown pumice soil in the series. The largest component of variability in the RY v. Olsen P relationship occurred within years within individual sites, reflecting inherent within site variability and treatment and measurement errors. Variability was also large between years within sites; this appeared to arise from erratic patterns of response within sites over time, possibly because of climatic, botanical, and edaphic fluctuations. The least variability in the RY v. Olsen P relationship arose from differences between sites. Soil pH, P retention, and rainfall did not significantly affect the relationship, but the yellow-brown pumice site and sites with high DM production gave lower RY for any given Olsen P than other sites.

More than an extra pair of hands
17
by Andy Bryenton
When there’s plenty to move around the farm — from sacks of fert to bales of feed and more — it’s easy to wish for another pair of hands. Or, in the case of Merlo’s Turbofarmer telehandler, one extremely large, hydraulic powered hand that can do it all. Merlo has been in the business of shifting heavy agricultural loads since the early 1980s — when the rest of us were still listening to new wave — the engineers from Piedmont, Italy were designing a whole new way to transport pallets, scoops and bales of just about anything. Having already designed goanywhere concrete mixers and tracked vehicles, Merlo SpA bosses conceived of a combination tractor, forklift and telescopic-boom crane. Calling it the SM30, Merlo debuted their new machine to huge enthusiasm. Today, with the benefit of three more decades of tuning and improvements, the top agricultural telehandler in the business just might be the big, capable Merlo TF42.7CS-156. Call it the toptier Turbofarmer for short, but don’t call it underpowered — under the hood the Italians have teamed up with ag engineering giant Deutz-Fahr to pack in a 156-horsepower four-litre diesel. This German-made mill complies with
rigorous emissions standards, but still churns out a phenomenal amount of torque to get all those jobs done — 609 Newton-metres at a mere 1,600rpm. With a traditional side-cab design offering extreme visibility, and intuitive controls to manage the varied optional boom-end tools available, this telehandler makes short work of major lifting and carrying. Its small turning radius enables ease of access to sheds and barns, and that extending boom gives it a long reach beyond that of tractor-mounted handling systems. For the big farm, where there’s always plenty to stow, transport and deploy, this extra pair of hands actually does the job of several other men and machines. If you need to transport up to 4,200 kilos at a time, or reach above seven metres and out three, then there’s no substitute for a heavy duty telehandler, and it makes sense to take a close look at the latest offering from the company who started the revolution in the first place.

To a trained eye, the state of their health is very noticeable, and often cow as an additive. So we now see the additive industry booming. the reasons for them not looking in top condition can also be obvious. Arriving at the cowshed can be an eye opener. Empty pallets of containers of used products lying around the implement shed can tell its own story. One particular shed I visited recently

had no room for implements as every imaginable additive was stored there! After greeting the farmer we made our way to the primary reason for which I had been called, the effluent pond. Then the real discussion began as we related the state of the pond to their management systems. I will walk you through the issues in this column just as I worked through them with the farmer. Modern farming is plagued by back-to-front thinking, where it seems the main additive missing is common sense. This farmer then asked me to visit his friend, who was experiencing major animal health issues on his farm, and despite seeking expert advice he had been unable to find any real solution. He started the season on June 1 with 500 cows to calve, and now has a little over 460 to complete the season with. Twenty-two cows died from metabolic problems, 63 had clinical milk fever, and some aborted. Although these cows will be milked, they will only make good milking cows

look bad when counted as an average. This problem has been ongoing for four years. The solution given to fix the problem? More additives! Last summer, farmers, particularly in the North Island, were plagued by uncontrollable facial eczema despite near toxic levels of zinc being administered. The season before, Waikato vets were puzzled by large numbers of young cows breaking their shoulders. They would just be walking along and they would collapse. When you talk around, this problem is quite common. Let’s apply some common sense and look at the big picture. If additives can fix a lot of these ailments then there must be something missing somewhere. Some simple questions arise: • Could this possibly be associated with what the cows eat? • Is there something missing in the feed? • What is causing deficiencies in the feed? • If grass is grown in soil, is this where the problem is? For the last 40 years the fertiliser industry has adopted the NPK approach. Some forward thinking people call this incomplete soil nutrition. Science states 16 elements are needed to grow balanced grass. After 40 years of largely NPK dominance (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), then just maybe, without using my calculator, there are approximately 13 nutrients running a tad low in the soils. The general thinking could be that it is too expensive to fully balance the soil and as a result, other
Interesting point — prior to my visit, the farmer that had 22 cows die had been given a fertiliser recommendation of 500kg/ha Superphosphate and 800kg/ha of urea. No attention was given to the elements which will help his metabolic problems. A good full soil test will show up the elements lacking and highlight the cause of this farmer’s frustration. There is a trial in Methven comparing two farms; one using the NPK (incomplete soil nutrition plus additives, and the other farm using the Albecht/ Kinsey system of soil fertility. The Albrecht/Kinsey approach of balancing and providing full soil nutrition may assume a higher cost, but they are showing superior results and higher profits overall. Particularly interesting is that the NPK farm developed serious grass staggers, killing five cows, and 12 down-cows required treatment over a two-week period as bad weather struck during the third rotation (Oct and Nov). Although magnesium-chloride was being administered, the cows drank less water over this period and hence a magnesium deficiency appeared. The treatment was to begin dusting with magnesium on the NPK farm. The Albrecht/Kinsey farm had abundant and balanced magnesium and calcium reserves in the soil to carry them through without issue. From my observations, the modern scientific approach of full soil nutrition and a comprehensive soil analysis will highlight the cause of animal health problems and reduce your animal wastage. Evidence has shown that soils with low zinc create challenges in avoiding eczema. This will be your next issue to face. 7

Mixed outlook in rural sector forecast
What the rural industry can expect in the year ahead and beyond has been outlined in a government review released just before the turn of the year, with primary industry export revenue forecast to decrease slightly in 2017 to $36.7 billion. It is further forecast to increase by 12.5 per cent in 2018 as dairy prices continue rising from the lows of last year. The Department of Primary Industries says the low global agricultural commodity prices and lower economic growth in trade partners create headwinds for New Zealand primary industry export growth. Dairy export revenue is forecast to rise 3 per cent in 2017. Dairy prices are beginning to rise, but production is projected to fall by 1.7 per cent. Meat and wool export revenue is forecast to fall 10.8 per cent in 2017 as beef production volumes fall back to sustainable levels and prices fall. Demand from China and an increase in wood available for harvest are expected to help forestry exports reach $5.3 billion in 2017, and exceed $6 billion by 2020. Expanded plantings are expected to increase future export volumes for wine and apples, while additional Gold3 kiwifruit licences will help drive horticulture export revenue past $6 billion by 2020. Strong international demand for seafood is expected to keep prices rising, leading to export revenue rising to $2 billion by 2019. A thriving international vegetable seed

The contest takes place during Friday 17th and Saturday 18th February. Under the new management of Nicky Sinden, from Ados Addicted to Fishing, and her business partner Candice Lawson, who need little introduction to the fishing fraternity, the new owners are looking forward to showing punters a refreshed tournament and prize-giving format. Keen anglers themselves, Nicky and Candice took a good look at previous prize pools offered and feedback from contestants and have put together a vastly improved prize pool, and introduced a tagged marlin section in addition to the existing tournament species of snapper, trevally, kahawai, john dory and kingfish. The $300,000-plus prize pool includes two Extreme Boats packages, two $10,000 cash prizes, $70,000 of Shimano product and a large swag of fishing and boating gear — all available to anglers fishing from boats, kayaks or the beach, who can choose to weigh-in or measure-and-photograph their catch. This year popular MC Pio Terei will be back on board to entertain the crowd on the Friday and Saturday nights, and a band for entertainment after the final prize-giving. The facilities at Marsden

Regatta plays to full house The organisers of the annual Pahi Regatta expect a full house for this year’s event on Anniversary weekend, with interest recently fuelled with the release of the movie The Catch, filmed in Pahi, and released at theatres across the country. The event is one of the oldest of its kind, with its roots firmly in the days when the huge Kaipara Harbour was the highway of choice for the settlements in many parts of Northland. In 1886, a group of Kaipara settlers gathered at Pahi, had a picnic and a couple of boat races, and the longrunning Pahi Regatta was born. Now run by the recently formed Kaipara Boating and Fishing Club, it is famous for its bathtub races, with outboard powered contraptions created from actual bathtubs, with a single outrigger for stability. Launch races, kayak contests, runabout races and all manner of aquatic competition will be supplemented by onshore entertainment, sideshows, beauty contests and two days of socialising in the big marquee. Once again, the Pahi Holiday Park camping ground will have the full house signs out, with many of the available camping spots already booked a year ahead from the last event. “We will again have wall-to-wall tents, motorhomes, caravans and house trucks for three days while local residents and visitors — many from other boating clubs around the Kaipara, will have designated parking a short ride from the main event,” said camp manager, Julie Dry. “We are out of space this year so latecomers are advised to check out other facilities in the district,” she said. As well as a myriad on-water events,

Keeping children safe on farms
Farmers are being encouraged to keep children safe on farms over the school holidays with a heightened risk of accidents on farms. Accidents involving children on the farm peak over December and January, and account for more than 22 per cent of injuries to those aged 15 years and under. Seven children died as a result of an accident on a farm between 2013– 2015. In the 12 years up until 2015, nearly 20,000 children were injured on the farm. WorkSafe’s sector leader Agriculture Al McCone says children are a vital component of farming family life and it is important this tradition continues. “We do not want to stop children having fun on the farm or helping out
mum and dad with jobs, however farmers are responsible for ensuring children are not put at risk. Managing the risks for children is different from managing them for adults,” said Mr McCone. “Many risks can easily be managed by, for example, using vehicles suitable for passengers, fencing artificial ponds, covering pits or even creating ‘safe kid zones’ in dairy sheds, or working together with neighbours as farmers have always done. “This means farming parents can still keep their children safe during busy work times.”

Parents or carers should lock doors to stop children getting into areas they shouldn’t and remove keys from vehicles children aren’t to drive. “Even if you have safety guards on machinery, these may still have holes small enough for children to put their hands through. Many farmers were used to working alone for much of the year, but it was a good idea to think about health and safety when children joined them on the farm,” said Mr McCone.
All three deaths involving children aged between 5 and 15 since 2013 involved a child operating a quad bike. “Only those trained and experienced should operate a quad bike,” said Mr McCone. “Quad bike riders under 16 years are two and a half times more likely to be injured compared to drivers aged 16–34 years old.” Visit saferfarms.org.nz for guidance on keeping children safe on farms.

The importance of dental care
Happy New Year from Natalie and the team at Doubtless Bay Dental! We hope you had a safe and enjoyable festive season. If one of your New Year’s resolutions for 2017 is to improve your health, did you know that in many cases having a healthy body starts with a healthy mouth? Periodontal disease has some nasty side-effects and comes in many forms. It can be identified by symptoms such as bleeding or receding gums, painful or wiggly teeth, and areas of discolouration and decay. Leaving these issues unresolved can lead to tooth loss as well as all sorts of health risks and complications such as an increased risk of strokes and cardiovascular disease, fatal heart attacks, loss of bone mass, uncontrolled diabetes, respiratory infections and even pneumonia. You need to be especially careful regarding your oral health if you are pregnant, as periodontal disease can increase the risk of passing on an infection to your baby, as well as increasing the chance that you will deliver a low weight or pre-term baby. (Just keep in mind that you can’t have your teeth professionally cleaned by a dentist during the first 3 months of pregnancy, as the disturbed oral bacteria can cause infection to the developing foetus). So how can you prevent periodontal disease or improve your mouth health once you already have it? In addition to regular brushing, flossing and mouth rinsing, it pays to

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED
Federated Farmers says the farming sector across the board is questioning the priorities and fiscal discipline of New Zealand’s councils as it says rates takes continue to outstrip cost indexes. Analysis by Federated Farmers released just before New Year shows the Consumer Price Index went up 21 per cent between 2006–2016. Local authorities have argued the Local Authority Cost Index is a fairer measure of cost pressures on local government, and that went up 33 per cent during the past decade. Farming advocates say both measures are dwarfed by the average 77 per cent hike in rates by 13 city, 54 district and 11 regional councils. “The ongoing trend of rates to rapidly outpace inflation is greatly resented by farmers, for whom council bills can be a significant component of their farm costs,” said Federated Farmers local government spokesperson Katie Milne. The organisation has put in an enormous amount of time and effort this year working to ensure that councils’ plans for waterways and other environmental issues are practical, fair and based on science and evidence. “But that’s matched by our submissions and lobbying on council costs, and the tendency of some councils to get carried away with growth plans and ‘extras’ with not enough recognition of the impact on the ordinary people and businesses footing the bill,” Ms Milne said. The level of concern in the rural sector about council costs
and activities could well be the reason why rural and provincial voter turnouts in the October elections were significantly higher than in metro centres. Rural voting around New Zealand was an average of 49.8 per cent, while the metro average was 41.3 per cent. While a number of councils have reined in spending, Federated Farmers wages an ongoing battle within many districts about rates burden unfairness, such as when revaluations push up rural property values. Land and improvement values can have little or no bearing on the property owners’ consumption of council services in relation to others. Yet some councils are reluctant to use tools such as annual charges, differentials and rates remittances to smooth out big rises in the face of factors such as farm incomes taking a severe buffeting this year. Other councils put up the rates to fund ‘growth initiatives’ and tourism, but overlook the fact that farmer businesses are also significant employers and drivers of district wealth, and it may be

just as pertinent to progress to keep their rates bills down. “Farmers are used to cutting their cloth according to prevailing conditions and Federated Farmers will continue to work hard to remind councils they should do the same.”

The perfect summer escape
by Andy Bryenton
This time of year offers the perfect showcase of reasons for owning a true sports utility. Camping, long family road trips and excursions to the beach and shopping malls — all demand a functional and spacious cruiser that’s not afraid to get its tyres dirty. That makes summer a great time for Ford to release their new Escape, the replacement for the popular Kuga SUV in a lineup of sporty multi-purpose vehicles alongside the Everest and the EcoSport. Picking up the name badge from a Ford favourite, the Escape stays true to its roots with the same compact wheelbase, ample power under the hood and the option of a very capable fourwheel-drive system underneath. What’s been added is both cosmetic and technical enhancements to bring the new Escape firmly into the 21st century. After all, this is the blue oval badged machine which goes up against the prize-winning Mazda CX series, and which Ford intends to share the spotlight with the world-beating Ranger and Mustang.
Stylistically, there are cues from the old Escape, but much more of the new Ford design aesthetic, with a bold grille and sharp, angular lines. Inside, it’s all space and comfort in the Titanium model, with extremely comfortable leather seating for five and acres of legroom. Under the hood there’s a choice of engines, including a 1.5 and a 2-litre EcoBoost as well as a 2-litre diesel. Considering the velocity achieved with a 2-litre EcoBoost mill in the Mustang, I’d be inclined to try one out in this spacious and practical family SUV as well. This size of SUV is sometimes simply a step up from the now hard-to-find station wagon, but the Escape offers more — all the carrying capacity with more style and a dash of 4x4 heritage.
QUAD BIKE SAFETY Think think think. Think about what you’re carrying. Think about where you’re going. Ford’s new Escape looks the business for summer fun, and arrives just in time for the sunny weather

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES January 2017
A fine vintage by Andy Bryenton
The counter-argument to progress is usually that ‘the original is best’. We’ve seen a brand new Mini and a new Mustang, but how about a motor vehicle that’s been stylistically unchanged since the postwar years? Classic Rolling Stones, or outdated rolling stock? Well, the comparison to Mick and the boys is a timely one, because the original Royal Enfield would have been right up there with the Triumph and the Norton as the mode of transport for those original rockers back in the 1960s. Let the mods have their scooters, it seemed to say — this is the ride for a rebel. Time may have turned those curves and chrome from cutting edge to charmingly retro, but the Bullet 500 and its Classic 500 counterpart have one thing that time can only improve — the longest production run of any motorcycle, ever. Part of that is down to the timelessness of the simple, cleanlined design. Part is down to the legendary, easyto-fix, hard-to-kill 500cc motor which chugs away at the Enfield’s heart. But another is the connection to India, that most exotic and dangerous of driving environments. When the Indian police force wanted a bike that could tackle everything from deserts to ice, policing thousands of miles of border and looking out for a billion people, they picked the Royal Enfield.
Production of these bikes continues today in Chennai (which was called Madras when the Bullet was new). The topic of popular travel stories, beloved of backpackers, and still the backbone of the subcontinent’s bike fleet, the Royal Enfield name is carried on by a range of models available here in New Zealand for more leisurely touring. Fuel injection may have replaced oldschool carburation, and Chennai is a long way from Redditch, but the familiar note of the Enfield remains as English as county cricket and apple cider. After all, there’s something about saddling up a real vintage-styled classic to take a trip through the Mackenzie Country or out down the coast. Without the searing power of a racing bike to handle, or the bulk of an American cruiser, it’s a refined and dare we say gentlemanly way to soak up the scenery and become one with the moment. The Indian connection with Royal Enfield goes back a long way. While it’s no big surprise that the subcontinent is a power player in vehicle design and manufacturing today — see

Long production — the Bullet has been a big name in motorcycling for more than 75 years
Jaguar and Mahindra, for example — the Bullet 500 harks back to the time when the long shadow of English occupation still coloured the local motoring industry, giving us hardy beasts like the Hindustan Ambassador, actually a re-made Morris Oxford. The Bullet, however, flourished in the heat and bustle of India while other grand old English bike brands fell by the wayside back home. A classic story of the Royal Enfield shines some light on the appeal of
this classic. The travelogue ‘Bitten by the Bullet’ by Steve Krzystyniak and Karen Goa details the journey of a motorcycle tour guide and a party of travellers seeking the ‘real India’ aboard a fleet of Enfield machines. The entire book has been presented as a radio play, and makes for some great summer listening. Wool — good, bad, ugly The end of a wool auction at present reminds me of the end of the old-fashioned western movies when the hero (is that still PC?) rides off into the sunset. However, the current showdown is more about the ‘good’, the ‘bad’ and the ‘ugly’ as wool prices have fallen generally into those three categories of late. The good: Mostly merino but sometimes fine halfbred fleece wool of excellent colour, high tensile strength, low vegetable matter, displaying character and style reflective of the laser scan micron result, well-prepared in the wool shed, each bale well-pressed and clipped and weighing less than 200 kilograms, but more than 180 kilograms. Many bales of the ‘good’ actually returning close in dollar terms per bale as the year in which the famous spaghetti western film was made — 1966. The bad: Mostly crossbred fleece wool of average colour, not necessarily reflective of the colour test result, low tensile strength, webby almost soft cotted, maybe OK for character but not necessarily reflective of the airflow micron test result, containing a few skirtings, therefore not overly well-prepared in the woolshed, variable bale weights averaging around 160

kilograms, but some as low as 115 kilograms, and not necessarily wellpressed and/or clipped. Many of the ‘bad’ struggling to return per kilogram greasy much more than one dollar for each of the films in the aforesaid trilogy. The ugly: Mostly short crossbred oddments, often mixed for fibre length between the very short and the slightly longer, average to poor colour sometimes reflective of the colour test result, the micron test result bearing little relevance to the end price, low yielding, not the most attractive samples within a broker catalogue. Many of the ‘ugly’ being passed-in by the auctioneer for not attracting much more than a glance from a wool exporter — aka the Man with No-Name. So we have ended the year on a very mixed note from well-sought-after merino wool enjoying a reasonable outlook for the new year, to a crossbred industry which has a rather hazy outlook due mainly to a huge reliance on China, as a buyer of raw material but a country which at present seems to have plenty of wool stocks in raw, semi-processed, or manufactured form, with little quantities moving on through the consumer pipeline. In the middle of the two extremes of wool types

are mid-micron, the finest of which have enjoyed a good rub from merino, and the coarsest of which have been affected by the lower crossbred pricing structure. Whilst some of the outlook sounds rather daunting, many of us, who have been involved in the wool industry for a few years now as growers, brokers and exporters, know that there can often occur sudden reversals of trend. Unfortunately the wool market is driven by supply and demand, and we are currently in a trough of low demand for our coarser wool types. That trend will not continue forever and we will experience heroes riding off into the sunset once again. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was the last of the ‘the dollars trilogy’, incorporating A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More — sound familiar? I’m not sure that all of our readers will enjoy their Christmas celebrations as much as usual due to many being in unfamiliar surroundings with their families because of (literally) broken homes. Do your best to have a safe and happy Christmas and enjoy the company of family and friends. I’m sure we all look forward to a more bright and prosperous 2017! That’s my view.

You say goodbye, Mini says hello by Andy Bryenton
You can’t improve on the classics. So the saying goes. Though of course, there are those who will insist that you can. 2016 Mustang? Or fusion cuisine wasabi pavlova? Opinions are divided on some modern remakes, though there’s one that’s not up for discussion. The new Mini may actually be a tiny BMW, taken away from it’s true blue British roots and kitted out with German engineering. But it’s got that funky cool britannia look, a whack of power from a turbocharged 231-horsepower fourcylinder engine, and a low, planted stance that helps turn twisty roads into an adventure playground. Now it’s also got a flagship feature film in New Zealand — another big remake of a classic. By the time you read this the trailers for Pork Pie will be on cinema screens, with all the talk and controversy which surrounds the re-imagining of one of New Zealand’s cinematic treasures. The update doesn’t just follow a new blondini gang as they burn a trail of comical destruction toward Invercargill. It also stars the new Mini Cooper S, in bright yellow. The actual car used in the filming of the remake was recently sold on Trademe to fund the final touches to the movie. Those who may scoff at the idea of the Mini
— in any form — as a serious sports car — are well advised to take a spin in this non-so-diminutive racer. With a name taken from the racing Minis of yesteryear — the kind that blitzed bigger rally cars clean off classic tracks such as the rally of Monte Carlo in ‘66 — the Cooper S trades in its previous generation supercharger for a turbo in this iteration, delivering smooth boost with minimal lag. Spacious inside and with a footprint just made for tight cornering, there are few vehicles which can put this big a smile on the average driver’s face. There’s bound to be a big spike in interest when the stunt driving, hardcharging Pork Pie Mini hits the big screen. So if you’ve had your eye on this thoroughly well-sorted classic remake, get in fast. This Mini is not so much a cover of your favourite classic rock track by a brash young band of unknowns. It’s the original lovingly remastered with the best modern technology. There’s more than just a new movie in the work when it comes to the Pork Pie legacy. As well as the forthcoming re-imagining — helmed by Matt Murphy, son of the original director Geoff and starring Dean O’Gorman, James

Rolleston and Ashleigh Cummings — there’s an ongoing saga of madness, minis and Kiwi big-heartedness which has carried the Pork Pie name between cinematic outings. The bi-annual Pork Pie Charity Run involves a crew of Mini drivers in machines both classic and modern, joining forces to hit the road for charity. In 2017 the Pork Pie teams will fire up their engines in Kaiataia, departing on Easter weekend to follow the route of the original yellow Blondini Mini. along the way they’ll be raising money for the KidsCan charity, supporting needy Kiwi children. It’s a great way to raise awareness, with everything from immaculately restored original Minis sharing the road with examples such as Dargaville, Northland driver Graeme Powdrell’s John Cooper Works ‘Minionator’ — a zanily decorated, bodykitted red modern racer. Look out for the Pork Pie minis as they roll through Canterbury — and check out the new movie when it hits the screen for Waitangi day. Both events simply underline the legacy of this iconic, fun little car as it carries the Cooper badge into its sixth decade.

Summertime food care
The heat is on as the summer really gets into gear prompting the Ministry for Primary Industries to remind people to make sure they can properly enjoy food over the holiday period. MPI’s Peter Thomson says there is a heightened risk of foodborne illness during summer and the holidays in particular. “During summer we tend to do more cooking or preparing of food outside at picnics, barbecues and on camping trips, which means foods might be out of the fridge for longer than usual,” says Mr Thomson. “Warmer, more humid weather also increases the risk factor.” “We have a very good food safety system in New Zealand with good rules to make sure food is safe and suitable for consumption. However consumers also have a role to play in keeping themselves, their friends and family safe from foodborne illness.” Fortunately, you can reduce the risk of you, your family or friends having a nasty foodborne illness by following simple food safety steps: • Remember the 3Cs — Clean, Cook, Chill — to help keep harmful bugs at bay
• Begin with clean hands — wash your hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap and dry your hands for 20 seconds before and after handling all food, including fresh produce • Barbecue safely by cooking meat thoroughly — meat should be steaming hot (over 75 degrees Celsius) all the way through • Keep raw food separate from cooked food. Don’t use a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, or seafood for anything else unless the plate has first been washed in hot, soapy water. Keep utensils and surfaces clean. • Washing fresh produce under running water is an important part of ensuring your favourite fruits and vegetables are safe to consume • Many pre-cut, bagged fresh produce items like lettuce are pre-washed. If the package label indicates the contents have been pre-washed, you do not need to wash it again.
Following the basic food safety steps can prevent nasty illnesses spoiling your summer fun
• Most harmful bacteria cannot grow at low refrigeration temperatures. Set your fridge temperature between 2 degrees Celsius and 5 degrees. “Cooking destroys harmful bugs. Cooking some specific higher risk foods, like bean sprouts, frozen imported berries or raw milk for instance, will help keep you safe. While some consumers may wish to eat these products without cooking, they need to understand there is a risk in doing so,” says Mr Thomson.
