Ms van Engelen was awarded Best Junior Feature/Lifestyle Journalist Associate in the Community Newspaper Awards held in Rotorua. Her colleague, Denise Gunn, of Integrity’s sister masthead Taranaki Farming Lifestyles, also was a winner for her ‘intricate knowledge and reporting from the frontline of farming.’ Ms van Engelen said it took about a week for the news to sink in. “My managing director, Allan Mortensen, rang to tell me that I had won the award and how proud he was of the accomplishment. I was in total shock as I had forgotten that we had entered and never expected this result. “For me, learning the processes of journalism has been interesting. When I applied for the position, I was not trained as a writer but had an interest in writing and was fortunate that Allan and our general manager Deb Wright were kind enough to employ me as an older person with limited experience. “I was put under the guidance of our editor, Paul Campbell, for journalism training in a kind of ‘old fashioned apprenticeship’. I am sure we are learning from one of the best and appreciate the opportunity.”

Managing director, Allan Mortensen, says he is extremely proud of his staff members’ accomplishments. “In spite of all the naysayers, print media is extremely strong in this day and age. The reason for the success of our publications is because we have highly-trained and passionate journalists like Ann who create content that people want to read.” Ms van Engelen left school at the age of 15 due to family circumstances and says that remaining willing to listen, be teachable and take instruction has enabled her to continue to succeed. “I like to keep topics interesting because I am sure my dad who was a farmer and union delegate in the dairy industry would have appreciated a variety of subjects to read about. Living rurally often means people don’t get out much, so it is up to us to add that little bit of sparkle to their lives as well as keep them informed — it is like being a rainbow in someone’s storm. “I enjoy helping produce a newspaper that is relevant and interesting, whilst doing the best job I can with a great team. It is always nice to hear when your article has made a positive difference in someone’s life.”

Council review underway An almost 20 per cent population growth in popular coastal areas south of Whangarei over the past six years is one of several factors driving a ‘fine-tuning’ of the Northland Regional Council’s representation arrangements. Chief executive, Malcolm Nicolson, says legally; the council needs to review its representation set-up every six years, including looking at how many councillors it has and whether its constituencies’ boundaries are in the right place. “We introduced some sweeping changes after our last review in 2012, including expanding the number of constituencies from three previously quite large ones to seven smaller ones, and by boosting the number of councillors by one to nine.” The latest round of proposed changes are essentially a ‘fine-tuning’ exercise to account for population growth and better reflect current communities going forward. The potential establishment of Maori constituencies was considered and ruled out last year under a separate legally-required revision and does not form part of this latest review. “Recent population changes, especially in the Coastal South constituency, which includes the popular coastal settlements of Ruakaka, Waipu/Waipu Cove, Langs Beach and Mangawhai Heads — have driven some of the biggest proposed changes. “Legally, we must strive to do what’s best for Northland, which means considering regional ‘communities of interest’ and ensuring effective and fair representation, including making sure each councillor represents roughly the same number of people.” The council is keen to retain the seven constituencies and nine councillors given an almost 20 per cent population growth since the 2012 review. It is proposing to make the Coastal South constituency smaller and moving Coastal South’s boundary south, matching the Whangarei District Council’s current Mangakahia/Maungatapere ward boundary, and essentially transferring the Maungatapere, Kokopu and Whatatiri areas into our neighbouring Coastal North constituency. The changes would cut Coastal South’s population from its current

22,980 people to 17,760 and bring it into line with councillor-to-population ratios elsewhere in the region. “As people continue to shift north, Coastal South is expected to remain Northland’s fastest-growing constituency. Adjusting its boundary now would have the bonus of likely future-proofing the area past the next representation review in 2024.” The NRC suggests shifting the boundary of its most northerly constituency, Te Hiku, so communities around Mangonui Harbour are in the same constituency. Adjusting its Whangarei Urban boundary making the semi-rural area in the north-west part of the Coastal North constituency and adjusting the boundary between Coastal Central and Coastal North to cater for expected future population growth. Public feedback on the proposed changes can be made until 4pm, Tuesday, July 24, 2018. The full Representation Review 2018 Initial Proposal is available online at nrc.govt.nz/RepReview. Feedback can be provided via nrc. govt.nz/RepReview or by emailing submissions@nrc.govt.nz. Hard copy submissions can be dropped off to any regional council office or posted to: Representation Review 2018, Northland Regional Council, Private Bag 9021, Whangarei Mail Centre, Whangarei 0148.

by Ann van Engelen Grant Engel grew up on a dairy farm in the Wairarapa, and during those years, bees meant avoiding stings and having honey on his toast. The busy little insects became one of the biggest inspirations of his life and have become his livelihood.

N

ow based in Kerikeri, Grant is the founder of Revolutionary Beekeeping — a mobile stainless steel harvester that enables beekeepers to extract honey straight from the hive as an alternative to the more traditional method of transporting frames from hives to an off-site processor. “When I was young, we would go to Fieldays, and I was always inspired by the agricultural inventions and new technology on show. I decided that when I grew up, I would return with an invention of my own,” says Grant. “Years later I moved from Wairarapa to a dairy farm in Kerikeri and noticed there was a lot of focus on bees and honey,

and I became interested in beekeeping.” Grant says taking honey away from the hive and processing it was much like getting a dairy cow and driving it to a shared facility where it was milked and then returned back to the farm. “I decided to create something easier to use because the process for harvesting honey didn’t make sense to me. I came up with the idea of putting each hive frame through a machine to extract honey quickly right next to the hive. “Harvesting honey on-site also removes the ‘risk’ of spreading any disease between hives — this has always been a concern for beekeepers.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES July 2018

In 2013 he entered his prototype in the Launch NZ category for products ready for commercialisation and launch to the market at the Fieldays Innovation Awards. The categories range from grassroots innovations through to small-to-medium business product launches and international agribusiness innovations. They showcase the latest developments in the agricultural industry that will shape the future of farming and primary industries in New Zealand. “I thought something to do with beekeeping would be a bit left-field and new because most of the innovations I had seen were generally focussed on traditional agriculture. There wasn’t much out there at the time that really looked at time-saving technology or innovation for beekeeping and honey.” “My entry went on to win the Launch NZ category — receiving the award ultimately took the business to the next level and having the design on show put us on a good platform. “I believe the key to success with innovation is being passionate about what you do. I wanted to find a solution to a common problem. I knew we couldn’t keep doing things the way we were just because that was the way it had always been done.” He says a lot has changed over the last 10 years in the honey industry. “The amount of hives has nearly doubled, and biosecurity is much more of an issue. As an industry, we need to be constantly revisiting and re-evaluating what we are doing to make sure we are protecting our food producers, and

WHY THE HONDA 420FM2 WORKS ON FARM

the sustainability of our products for generations to come. “Revolutionary Beekeeping now has hives and beekeepers across the country, from Northland to Canterbury, with support from big agribusiness organisations including Landcorp and sustainable dairy farming fund Southern Pastures. We have also expanded into collecting and brokering honey directly from commercial beekeepers, enabling them to make profit from their honey. “Our success is largely down to the fact that we are on the same wavelength as our customers. We want beekeeping that protects the health and sustainability of bees — it is really important to us.

NEW GENERATION HONDA TRX420FM2 FEATURES

“Our daughters, Isla and Belle, are really curious and interested in bees too. They each have their own hive and little beekeeping suits, and they are always saving bees inside and letting them out. Their favourite is honey on toast, that’s our daily ritual. It is really nice they have that appreciation of where honey comes from.” Fieldays CEO, Peter Nation, says the Engels story is one that resonates with him. “Many families with young

children attend Fieldays, and you see them walking wide-eyed through the Innovations Centre. It is fantastic to think that Fieldays is inspiring the next generation of inventors, and who knows what innovative products and new technology the Fieldays experience will spark in the future. “There is a lot of public interest in the story behind our food, from paddock to plate, and it’s time for agribusiness to tell that story.”

“Naturopathy is about treating the cause of problems, not just the symptoms. We aim to get people’s health back on track quickly with a clear treatment plan and support. We are members of the NZ Society of Naturopaths Inc and have access to a large group of technical advisers and support networks to provide first-rate health assistance. “Our appointments by videolink are proving very popular with families unable to get into the clinic. Herbal treatments have been used for more than 2,000 years and are still the number one treatment for more than 70 per cent of the world’s population because they work.” Amanda and Libby regularly attend seminars to keep updated with new products, treatments and current

technologies. “Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, naturopathic treatments have no side effects and are safe to use alongside prescription medicines if prescribed by your naturopath,” says Amanda. “I trained as a nurse and was giving out drugs left, right and centre. Each medication had additional medications to counteract side effects. It didn’t make sense to me, but it wasn’t until I experienced this for myself that I realised how shocking it was. Through research, I decided to retrain in natural therapies. “I had an overweight client on blood pressure medication and was sick for the five years involved. She has lost 15 kilos, is feeling incredible, and is transitioning off her meds as she no longer requires them. “The proof is in the pudding with natural therapies. We get people bursting into tears because it is so easy to feel healthy again and they wonder why they haven’t been shown this way before.” The pressure many farmers are under is intense, and their ailments vary including migraines and digestive issues, but the cause is often stress. “We love working with farmers because animal care is their number one priority; however, they often forget about their own needs. “Years ago my friend’s garage was full of supplements including magnesium, iron, and molasses for her horses. She came to me for health advice, and it was clear from her deficiencies that

Amanda and Libby believe wholeheartedly that natural medicine is a positive way to help keep the whole family healthy

she required exactly what she was giving her animals. She hadn’t realised that she also needed nutritional care.” Environmental situations including drought, too much rain, and diseases coming through the farm can cause problems not only to the animals but to their carers. “We offer natural and effective support to look after our humans as well as their animals,” says Amanda. New clients can make an appointment and fill out a health questionnaire on the orangehealth.co.nz website. “Once the completed questionnaire/ health profile is received we start with a phone or video call. The questions help

us gather information and see the whole picture of issues that can cause illness and request blood tests if required.” Treatment often begins with a specifically designed herbal formula to assist the immune and digestive systems and support the side effects of stress both in and on the body. “An old name for natural medicine was folk medicine, based on various plants and their healing qualities. One doctor wrote that his use of natural medicine came from watching animals. He visited an alpine village where people were strong and robust into their 80s.

“After observing their natural lifestyle and remedies, he retrained as a naturopath and herbalist. “He learnt not to sleep with windows open on cold nights because you need to breathe warm air to avoid getting sick. “He watched chickens tuck their beak under their wing to sleep and keep a natural temperature balance — it all makes sense. Hay fever, anxiety, depression, palpitations, insomnia, headaches, mood swings, and fatigue, boils, rashes, aches and joint stiffness can be treated naturally. “We can help with allergies, ar thritis, immune disorders, asthma, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, bloating and constipation, PMT, menopause, infertility and fibroids,” says Amanda. “Pre-conception and post-natal care, high and low blood pressure, high cholesterol, varicose veins, glue ear, ADHD, and all childhood conditions. Balancing weight, diabetes and blood sugars, detoxification of the liver and bowel, presence of heavy metals and much more are within our care. At times the issues you have may be a side effect of something else going on in your system. Natural therapies are a positive way to improve your health and well-being.” Contact Orange Health info@ orangehealth.co.nz or visit the website for more information orangehealth.co.nz

Fostering background

biodiversity by Ayla Miller

Situated in the backyard of an unassuming three bedroom house in the Kaipara is the hidden treasure that is Wild Eden Micro Farm.

I

t’s early days for the small market garden, which was only established earlier this year, but owner Josh Millar, his partner Hayley and their blended family of seven children under seven, are working hard to re-establish biodiversity in their garden and encourage life to work together as nature intended. The garden started first and foremost as a way to feed their large family; however, being a market gardener had been a lifelong dream for Josh. When Josh was no longer able to work a regular job due to frequent and painful migraines, he decided to throw himself in at the deep end and do something, which satisfied his need for an income and was in line with his inherent beliefs, attitudes and values. “The heart behind what we do is supplying local, spray free food to the

community. Vegetables can lose a lot of their nutrition during the time they are transported from the farm to the shop. For us, it’s about fixing the environment. We are creating an ecosystem,” he says. “Part of the reason I started Wild Eden Micro Farm was frustration with the food system. What it all boils down to is, if you can grow your own food in your backyard, it takes away so many problems. I’d go broke if it meant everyone could have their own vegetable garden.” Josh and Hayley are keen to include their young children in the gardening process working with their interests and strengths to foster a passion for being outdoors and eating good wholesome foods. “I enjoy the fact that I’m with the kids when they are at home,” he says.

Radiata pine is our most popular plantation species. With good reason. It grows faster in New Zealand than in its native California. Some forests have been harvested five times and are growing better than ever. As the world supply of tropical hardwood diminishes, there is exciting potential to use and export pine timber for outdoor construction. Treatments, such as acetylation or heating, make pine much more durable and hard. Our plantation pines are also excellent at capturing atmospheric carbon. A mature pine captures nearly three times as much carbon as an indigenous tree twice its age. LOVE OUR FORESTS

focussing on foods that are every colour of the rainbow. “We grow very little green,” he says. “I’d be quite happy to encourage other people to have vegetable gardens, and in the future, we would like to set aside time each month to help a local person start their own vegetable garden. It would be a win-win for us because they if they grow something different it could attract beneficial insects into the area.” The most rewarding part of the process for Josh is seeing all his smiling customers on market day and watching the kids in the garden. “If I could have it my way we would turn the whole backyard into garden but we need to leave somewhere for the kids to play.”

As for advice for others starting their own gardens, Josh says the most important thing is not to get ahead of your compost heap. “Just start wherever you are. You can make it work around your nine-to-five

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when difference machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

ADVERTORIAL

Top avocado returns Significant supplier of avocados to the New Zealand retail and wholesale market, Zeafruit, was the top returner to New Zealand growers supplying fruit to the domestic market in the 2017–18 season. “We have had a record season with seven per cent more total value realised across the industry compared to the previous season. At the market’s height, domestic returns for growers reached as high as $80 per tray. Overall the result for the season has been fantastic for our suppliers and partners,” says managing director, Glen Dunseath. The results are also great for suppliers of Just Avocados who provide 40% of Zeafruit’s supply. Zeafruit also relies on the specialist packer, handler and exporter for all of its ripening and distribution requirements for their contracts with New Zealand’s major supermarkets. “We have a mutually beneficial relationship with Just Avocados that is driving valuable outcomes for all stakeholders. The individual strengths of each business are working together to exceed market competition, an outcome we are very proud of for last season’s avocado crop,” says Dunseath. Just Avocados and Zeafruit have a long-standing relationship, and Just Avocados’ parent company Darling Group has a significant shareholding in the domestic marketer. “Early in the development of Just Avocados, we recognised our marketing expertise lay in the export sector. In 2015, Darling Group had the opportunity to invest in Zeafruit, and we purchased 33% of the company and have been able to partner more closely with their domestic market capability,” says Darling Group managing director, Andrew Darling. Just Avocados general manager, operations and grower services, Jarrod Redwood, says that working with Zeafruit allows them to maximise the total return for suppliers. “We are focussed on extracting the best possible financial outcomes for our suppliers; grower profitability is not one-

dimensionally driven by export returns alone — every piece of fruit grown on the orchard has value and Just Avocados set itself the challenge to maximise that value in whatever market we engage.” The partnership between Just Avocados and Zeafruit allows Just Avocados’ suppliers to leverage both company’s capabilities in the export and domestic markets through joint strategy development around customer partnering, marketing, logistics efficiency, cool chain management and added value service provisions. “We work with Zeafruit to find value markets for the total crop whether class one, two or process grade. If we can extract better value at certain times of the season for class one in the domestic market then we will do this, or alternatively, when we can get better values for class two or three via our export process programmes we will respond through those channels,” says Redwood.

Going into the current season Just Avocados and Zeafruit are continuing to build on their total orchard gate return strategy by pursuing value opportunities for their growers’ total crop.

The idea to reinvent the use of steel shipping containers developed from a need for storage, and the thought of wisely using these solidly-built steel shelters has been embraced by many people across the country. Containers can be hired or purchased and customising units into accommodation has increased in popularity both domestically and commercially. People are modifying them to suit a range of needs including extra worker accommodation, hunters’ huts and the extra bedroom for guests. The tough steel endures the elements of the sea and the salt water with the lifespan for a container travelling around the world on a boat being approximately 20 years, meaning on land, they last for many more years. They are also used as extra farm equipment storage, lunch rooms or office space, animal shelters and onsite shower facilities. Units can be fully insulated and lined and fitted with kitchens and windows. As an extra

storage facility, it is the simple matter of opening the door and locking away your equipment including ride-on mowers, horse gear, extra feed or dangerous chemicals, shearing tools, motorbikes and the like. Add a floor and insulation if desired, the options are endless. Like all buildings to help keep the unit looking good, maintain it by washing it and refreshing the outside paint as time

goes on to help keep corrosion away. Keeping the structure elevated off the ground will help keep the air circulating around it. One benefit of using a shipping container is that relocating the structure is relatively simple and you can take them with you if you move. They are a cost-effective solution to many storage situations.

Simple & Affordable Buildings “Not just another shed company”

Barnbuilders…. Building On It is enjoyable for me to share what will be the beginning of a new era involving Barnbuilders. Around 2001 Myself and my late Wife Minnie started Barnbuilders… Builders of Good Solid Farm Buildings. We were privileged to enjoy; fantastic people with their special sites and the thrill of being involved with this exiting stage with new landowners, the Fieldays buzz, roof-shouts, great workmates and suppliers…..and much more.

We shared the same passion. Using timber & poles where we could, being innovative with design options and ways to help clients…his energy took me back 18 years! A good Barn to both of us is one where the customer is not only happily engaged while we plan & build, but also into the future, because the building does exactly what they wanted. Anyway, Brett, (being young, fit and keen as) purchased Barnbuilders, so long as I stayed and worked with him, both on site and with planning & sales which I was very keen to do.

18 years, 200 Sheds and many very special customers/associates later, I can look back proudly and am thankful.

I can now look forward to watching and helping Barnbuilders NZ Ltd grow and grow and keep offering and delivering a good Kiwi type Barn built in our classic Rural Style.

Early last year I was approached by Brett Hoyle who, after 12 years of serious (mainly) shed building, was starting his own building operation.

Thanking you, Tim Magill Call Brett or Myself anytime to talk about Barn building…and watch this space…

various local companies or discuss the design you may have in mind with them, often producing the product of your requirements is easier than you think. Looking after animals is a priority and ensuring they have good shelter is a must for their health and safety both in cold weather and the heat of summer. Ensuring chickens, donkeys, goats and other animals have housing is simple, and many are now designed to be easily moved and relocated allowing fresh food and minimal pasture damage. Feed pads shelter groups of animals from wind, rain and sun and keep

the feed in good condition and save wastage. Calves need a clean, wellventilated, well-lit shelter to give them a head-start in life and providing the best possible environment for raising calves can include sheds or shelters with doors or openings on both ends to provide natural light and gentle air movement, keeping the animals’ environment fresh and clean. It also prevents them from overheating — with even temperatures allowing them to remain more relaxed. Dairy goats benefit from the same type of system.

Sheds for all needs by Ann van Engelen

Farm sheds come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are made from various materials. They are required for many different reasons so whether it be to house animals, farm equipment, feed or general storage — a shed needs to be a solid, safe structure and easily accessible. They can be made from various types of cladding including timber, Colorsteel or iron and can be fully or semi-enclosed, and have open or closed bays depending on each situation. Roller, hinged or sliding doors are also options on many builds. Barns, milking sheds, feed pad covers and machinery sheds are all available through various building companies and suppliers. Rotary and herringbone milking sheds can often be designed for individual requirements including bay spacings to suit. Feed pad covers for all stock including cattle, goats and sheep help save on feed keeping it clean and animals off wet paddocks during winter saving pugging of the land and provide shade in the hot months. Shelters are a solution for many circumstances and can be made as large or small as you need. When on a lifestyle block, ensure you have the right space and position for the building you choose. There are fully or partially enclosed designs with large or small doorways for easier machinery manoeuvring and housing larger implements.

We can supply and build all types of kitset garages and sheds of any size as well as a large selection of farm buildings and pole sheds.

Good homes make good tenants by Jill Dickie

If chickens are happy, warm, and feeling secure they’ll; repay with enough eggs from each hen to keep you in cooked breakfasts, pavlovas and baked cakes for months! Chickens like to have a regular, quality food supply, and also enjoy good draught-free shelter, out of the rain and hot sun. If they are free-range, the shelter you provide can be something as simple as a hay shed, implement shed, or a treeline, as long as they have somewhere to lay those precious eggs for you. It is possible to partially free-range your hens by letting them out for the afternoon after they have ‘done their duty’, bringing them back into their house at night, to safety from predators. The house should be secure from all weathers, and provide next boxes as well as poles to roost on at night. If letting them out isn’t an option, your hen house can provide similar accommodation, and a connected run gives them a place to scratch and pick at the ground as chickens like do. A run can be as elaborate as a netting compound complete with a roof to keep wild birds or cats out, or as simple as some sticks of timber nailed together, covered with chicken wire and windbreak cloth. Another option, smaller again, is a mobile hen house. Built on skids or wheels, you can shut the hens in then

drag or tow it to a nearby site, allowing them the freedom of fresh grass as they need it. It saves the effort of providing greens each day, gives the soil time to rejuvenate, and the hens can fertilise the ground as well. When a smaller number of chickens are being kept, accommodation is easily achievable with various coops available on the market, or easily build your own with timber and netting, as long as they have a dry and secluded spot for egg laying. Other options, if you’re not so handy on the tools, is to

recycle other items into what you need. A waterproof ute canopy, for example, is just about high enough for the chooks to pop under to shelter from the rain. Gathering some of those plastic drums, securing together, and cutting chickensized doorways in the fronts; converting an unused dog kennel or garden shed; even an unusable plastic water tank with a door for you and a door for them cut into the side! All it takes is a little imagination, and you’ll have eggs-axctly what keeps everyone happy!

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

We can’t lose sight of the big picture by Matt King, MP for Northland

1.5M please Need a contractor for your... • Truck & Digger work • Earthworks • Household & Farm drainage • Trenching • General Cartage

When you look at the arrogant and shameful way Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones has poured 60% of the Provincial Growth Fund spending so far into this region, it’s clear that NZ First is targeting Northland as a parliamentary seat they would like and they are blatantly trying to ‘buy it’ with taxpayer funds. Has nobody noticed that there had been no proper process to the way the money is allocated? In this government, minority party New Zealand First has Labour over a barrel in a classic case of ‘the tail wagging the dog’. It goes without saying that decisions made now for Northland will have farreaching effects, and so this is what I mean by ‘shame ful’ when I describe the way there has been no accountability for the way these sums of money have been allocated. What I see so far is not of significant long-term benefit across these communities, and consultation and strategic thinking are missing. The transport infrastructure issue is a prime example. Grabbing headlines by saying that we should consider developing rail when the topography and demographic layout of our region have always been against that option is just a waste of time. A proper highway linking Whangarei and Auckland is a key strategic arterial link that must be front and centre of any forward planning. All three district councils and the Northland Regional Council have identified the motorway as their top priority infrastructure project, and the 52-point Northland Economic Action Plan identified this infrastructure as the single-most important driver of economic growth. This government has cut billions from the roading budget to give back tens of millions in miscellaneous projects so in reality, this region is worse off by far. The recent visits in Northland by National Party leader, Simon Bridges, were a very successful connection with our communities where people took

the opportunity to have their say on a number of issues which are affecting their lives. Simon is planning to return to Northland with a visit to Kaitaia on August 28. As covered at these gatherings, National is adamant that starting to build the highway from each end is the way to tackle it, to achieve what is essential infrastructure for the region’s success. I may not be tossing billions around, but I am committed to Northland and holding the government to account on promises made and realistic progress for this region. Recognising the size and diversity of my electorate, I have recently put a bus on the road to serve as a mobile office. The feedback has been excellent because it allows me even greater access to the smaller communities, and the opportunity to listen and talk to even more people. Northlanders are quick to see through ‘winners get the booty’ politics as a function of headline-grabbing — I know this because I am out and about and listening. For regular updates on my progress please go to my Facebook page @ MattKingMP.

ADVERTORIAL

Off the beaten track NZ Adventures is a long-established company offering various off-road and backcountry tours in the South Island. Participants bring their own or hire suitable four-wheel-drive vehicles and are guided by the experienced team of Robbie and Connie Crickett from NZ Adventures across a wide variety of the island’s vast backcountry — over sheep stations, forests and conservation lands. Especially popular amongst the five different tours on offer are the High Country Heritage six or seven-day tour and the fiveday Eastern Explorer. The High Country Heritage is a tour down the foothills of the Southern Alps starting in Blenheim and ending in distant Cardrona with overnights in Hanmer Springs, Methven, Fairlie, Omarama and Cromwell along the way. On the sevenday March trip, the additional overnight is in Geraldine. The High Country Heritage tour is very much an overview trip offering a glimpse into the operations on the stations, the scale of the landscape above and away from the tourist routes, the size and power of the mighty rivers and the distances involved between some isolated and often iconic places. Omarama to St Bathans by the most direct route would be a good example. This is NZ Adventures’ most popular and longest established tour. The Eastern Explorer is the first new trip that business owners Robbie and Connie brought to NZ Adventures when they purchased the business in 2013. Starting in Geraldine and finishing in Alexandra the tour takes in the very diverse

and possibly little-known area of the eastern foothills of South Canterbury and inland Otago. Included are the Hunter Hills, Hawkdun and St Mary’s Ranges — along with the Strath Taieri region and the Lammerlaw and Lammermoor and the Rough Ridge. The region is rich in New Zealand’s early European history with the gold at Lawrence and the vast pastoral runs. Modern industrial mining features at Macraes Flat alongside over a hundred years of mining history. The trip on the fifth day follows a gorge of the mighty Clutha River. Enjoy five days of amazing scenery with the bonus of a great and like-minded company in the deep south.

What causes osteoarthritis? by John Arts

Part 2 Last edition we saw that osteoarthritis (OA) is mostly caused by the loss of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes. Their job is to maintain cartilage. If chondrocytes are damaged or die, they are unable to repair cartilage. The result is that cartilage starts to break down. Eventually, whole patches of cartilage are lost causing a bone-onbone scenario. While cartilage has no nerves, bone certainly does! While bone-onbone causes pain, much of the pain comes from misdirected inflammation. White blood cells that patrol the joint capsule respond to cartilage loss by bringing in extra fluid and a cocktail of inflammatory chemicals in a vain attempt to repair the cartilage. The result is pain, stiffness and in some cases visible swelling. My approach is firstly to adopt a nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory diet. This is high in antioxidants, omega-3 and other foods that reduce inflammation. We then add four compounds from supplements. The first is omega-3 fish oil usually between 4,000 and 6,000mg daily.

We then add high-grade chondroitin sulphate at 800-1,600mg. Chondroitin sulphate (CS) is the most important joint supplement. CS is an actual component of cartilage and adding this helps chondrocytes to work properly. The problem is that most joint supplements only contain around 250mg of CS. In most cases, I start clients on 1,600mg. We then add the same amount of glucosamine and a potent 95% curcumin extract from turmeric. As an example, I have one client with OA in his knees. This was bad enough to significantly impact mobility. After three months on a personalised programme, he is now able to exercise again. His partner had OA in her thumbs and shoulders and is much better. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

• by Jill Dickie •

Former pupils of the now-closed Graham’s Fern School met recently for a luncheon at the Dargaville RSA to exchange memories and laughter. Many stories between the 18 past pupils began with ‘I remember when…’

T

he idea for the reunion came to light when ex-pupil, George Tier, celebrated his 80th birthday with friends, some of who had lived at Hoanga and attended the school. They began talking about old times, discussing their teachers and fellow pupils, and asking ‘I wonder where they are now?’.

An organising team put their heads together to name people in an old school photo, then started contacting those they could and invited them to the reunion. When contacted the past pupils were enthusiastic to get together again, and 18 of the 28 travelled from around the North Island, plus one from Brisbane, bringing their partners to

attend. Others were either unable to be contacted, or unable to travel. “The event went very well, and everyone enjoyed their time together,” said reunion organiser, Margaret Tier. A 1965 photo of the school was printed onto a coffee mug and presented to the 43 attendees at the reunion. An amusing story comes from Mr George Tier: “Our teacher used to ride a pony to school. She often overslept, but we kids would be in school when she arrived — the older boys got in the window to let us in so we could start our schoolwork.” “One day just as she arrived it started to rain, and dear teacher tried to bring the pony in. All went well until she got it to the set of steps leading up to the school floor, about four or five steps. The pony stamped on the first step or two and would go no further no matter how much coaxing and threatening, so that idea was abandoned. Even as a

five-year-old I didn’t think it was a good idea to try getting a pony up steps — crazy teacher!” The school has an interesting history. It was built above the mill town of Hoanga in 1901 on a section of land from the estate of Mr W S Graham, a prominent early settler, and served the area for more than 50 years, before closing in 1952. By 1905 the thriving Hoanga township included the school with a roll of 27, a post office, store, community hall, 10 dwellings and a port with two wharves, all centred around the Kaipara Timber Company sawmill. Graham’s Fern estate was divided into smaller farms by 1913, and the school roll had increased to 52 pupils, so an assistant teacher was appointed. A short time later, however, it decreased due to a fire at the mill, which destroyed much of the town, and by 1918 only 26 pupils attended.

At the time there were no houses available for the teaching staff, and in a letter written to the Auckland Education Board in 1916, it was stated the current teacher was sleeping on sawdust in the public hall, and most inconvenienced when other parties wanted use of the building! In 1921 the school was relocated from the windswept hillside down to flat land with space for a play area around it. The roll had risen once again to 38, soon to decline again after the sawmill closed, and by 1940 only eight pupils remained. A decision was made by the Minister of Education in 1952 to consolidate and close Graham’s Fern, Parore, and Hore Hore schools, and their pupils all began in Dargaville in 1953. The old school building still sits in its relocated position of 1921, now being used as a storage shed for the farmer whose land it stands on.

by Jill Dickie

This is a question most smaller-scale farmers are faced with at some point in their year. “Do it myself or get someone in?” A decision can be made with some simple calculations and consideration in weighing up the pros and cons. Farmers should consider whether investing in machinery is affordable for their business, especially the more expensive items such as hay balers, seeders and sprayers, and whether the upgrade will generate further revenue or become a drain on resources.

Upgrading or purchasing new equipment has benefits, such as maintaining control of jobs and getting them completed when required, and the individual farmer may also have the skill level required, but at times when there are several jobs demanding attention — it can be easier to call a contractor for assistance. This frees up the farmer’s time for other tasks, and contractors generally have the right tools for the job — and can get the job done faster. Hiring a contractor is also a tax deduction for businesses. There are services available for a range of farm tasks ranging from paddock preparations, crop planting and harvesting to animal management and husbandry practices such as lamb and calf marking, crutching and shearing. The costs of repair and maintenance, as well as registration and overall care of plant and machinery, falls on the contractor.

On the other hand, at times of peak demand, such as haymaking, for example, a contractor can be held up or run behind schedule, or bad weather may affect the job’s completion, resulting in penalties for the farmer. Building a good relationship with a reliable contractor is essential to success, as is working in with neighbours to secure several jobs for the contractor while in the area. Ownership costs are relatively high if a machine is only used for a short time during the year, such as a hay baler, but some implements, for instance, a tractor, can be used often, so there may be a ‘break even’ point when the cost is calculated over a per hectare basis. When evaluating machinery options, farmers should not only consider the capital cost of the equipment but also their seasonal challenges and the risk of delays in getting the job done on time.

LIFESTYLE BLOCK SERVICES

Waterway and boundary protection

MARC HACKETT CONTRACTING LTD

by Ann van Engelen

“No Job Too Small”

Fencing boundaries and waterways is an important part of owning a lifestyle block or farm to keep stock inside your boundaries and outside of your water areas. New fencing can improve grazing management and stock control. Engaging the services of a local fencing contractor can remove a lot of time and stress — allowing you to continue with your farming duties. If you choose to employ a contractor, they can generally help you with planning and planting choices such as flax, shrubs and native plant options. Ensuring all boundary fences are in a solid, sound state is important not just for animal safety and security, moreover, because the owner is liable if the stock gets off the property and cause damage to vehicles or other property. Protecting waterways from pollution, such as effluent and run-off sediment, by excluding stock and creating a buffer between water and the land is now an expected part of farming. Fencing these areas is a priority under the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord and any significant wetlands, as identified in a regional plan or policy statement, must also have all stock permanently excluded. All stock must be excluded from any permanently flowing rivers, streams, drains, lakes and springs, more than a metre wide and 30cm deep.

Pay attention! Planting the area between the fence and water helps slow run-off to ensure as much bacteria, phosphorus and sediment as possible are filtered out before entering the waterway. Low planting gives the benefit of stream bank stability, whilst full planting helps reduce drain maintenance and is an attractive asset for your farm, provides shade, keeps water cool and

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

“This includes picking up calves and organising IHC sales, simply because we cannot be part of something that puts farmers’ livelihoods at risk,” says IHC national manager fundraising, Greg Millar. “IHC has had a long and important partnership with farmers, which means together we have been able to make a real difference to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities — particularly those people living in rural communities. “We have spoken to many farmers, including at this year’s Fieldays, many of whom were concerned about the spread of Mycoplasma bovis.” Since the eradication programme was announced by the government, IHC has been in ongoing talks with the Ministry for Primary Industries — and based on information provided they have made some very tough decisions. Over many years, IHC has tightened its practices — only picking up animals with National Animal Identification and Tracing ear tags and Animal Status Declaration forms. “Despite significant improvements in these systems, the risk remains too high,” says Mr Millar. “We have determined there should neither be IHC organised transportation

of weaned calves to sales, nor IHC calf sale days. We looked at every possible way to keep the scheme running as is, but after deliberating with MPI, we determined it was too much of a risk. “This is an important decision and one that we have not made lightly — the Calf and Rural Scheme is a long-standing fundraising programme that is now in its 33rd year, and generates more than $1 million annually for people with intellectual disabilities. “We have a real obligation to do what is right for New Zealand farmers, their livelihoods and long-term sustainability. We are keeping up to date with the latest findings, and working to gather the best data possible, to determine how the scheme will operate in the future. “We would also like to acknowledge what a tough time this has been for farmers, and we are making a commitment to those in rural communities around New Zealand who have supported those with intellectual

disabilities over the past 33 years. IHC is very grateful for the ongoing support in this difficult year of the key sponsors, in particular, PGG Wrightson who has supported us from the beginning of the calf scheme.” People wanting to continue to support people with intellectual disabilities and take part in the virtual calf scheme can donate $300 in lieu of a calf, by visiting ihc.org.nz/pledge.

Joint Ministry for Primary Industries and NAIT Ltd compliance operations have a greater understanding amongst farmers of the National Animal Identification and Tracing scheme, but some are continuing to break the rules. Manager of compliance investigations, Gary Orr, says MPI and NAIT Ltd have been running joint operations around the country to check compliance with NAIT requirements. “We are pleased to see knowledge of the NAIT scheme has increased in the wake of the Mycoplasma bovis response; however, some farmers are still ignoring their legal obligations,” says Mr Orr. “The Mycoplasma bovis response has highlighted the importance of tracing animal movements and having complete and accurate information available. It is critical all farmers comply with NAIT and track all animal movements on and off their farms. Those that aren’t are putting the rest of the industry in jeopardy.” Mr Orr says MPI and NAIT Ltd are increasing their focus on compliance with NAIT requirements. “Both organisations have significantly stepped up their efforts to detect instances where animal movements have taken place without being recorded in the NAIT database. Since the start of the year, MPI has undertaken around 200 NAIT compliance checks on farms and saleyards where cattle or deer are present.”

Ph 09 439 8248 Beach Rd, Dargaville

What we haven’t got we can get!

In addition, MPI has conducted 19 proactive compliance operations across the country, including during the moving period and Operation Cook Strait in March. “As a result of these operations, we have issued a number infringement notices and written warnings. We are conducting further enquiries on stock movements and currently have eight active investigations underway. These may result in further infringement notices being issued.” Mr Orr says NAIT Ltd has begun an analysis of NAIT data to identify

those farmers who continue to offend. “Any farmers who have breached the requirements of the act will be sent a warning letter by NAIT Ltd. If they do not meet their legal requirements within 30 days, they will be referred to MPI for further enquiries.” Operations continue at various locations throughout the country through random inspections at key livestock depots, transit points and livestock exchange or saleyard points.

he first Ody settlers, Sydney and Emma, arrived in 1906 shortly after emigrating from England. The original block was approximately 600 acres. “Sydney set out to clear scrub for a dairy farming operation and with his son — my grandfather Jack, and daughters Doris and Daisy milked the cows by hand twice a day, gradually increasing the herd to 100 cows,” says David Ody. Due to Jack’s ill health, his sons Brian and Will formed Ody Bros Ltd in 1960 and took over the farm. “They achieved a great deal over the next 55 years with marginal parts of the farm put into production and neighbouring blocks of land added

making it a 1,200 acre property of mixed low-lying flat, rolling foothills and steep mountain contour. “My dad Brian married my mum Jeanne, Will married June, and they continued to milk until 1980 when the operation changed to sheep and beef. I joined the team in 1996 and my wife Tracy arrived on the scene in 2008.” Glenrossie stud was established in 1969 when Brian and Will purchased six Studloch Beef Shorthorn females along with the imported bull, Burnton Banter. “We use top AI bulls from Australia and purchased Belmore Blotch 22 from Phil Bayly, who imported the bull from Australia — he bred extremely well and contributed a great deal to the herd.

LIVESTOCK “The Santa Gertrudis came in the mid-1970s. Dad had seen a National Geographic magazine with photos of King Ranch cattle in Texas and liked the look of them, so he used Santa Gertrudis AI semen when it became available in New Zealand. One house cow is remembered particularly for her outstanding milk production. Our aim has always been to produce structurally sound, well-fleshed, fast-growing bulls for commercial beef breeders. Structure, conformation and muscle are important traits for profitable beef cattle, and some breeders have been buying bulls from Glenrossie for more than 45 years. This reflects the constant drive for consistent, quality cattle.” The proper ty currently runs approximately 90 stud Shorthorn cows, 30 stud Santa Gertrudis cows and 50 commercial Shorthorn cows that are mated to Santa Gertrudis bulls. They are producing hardy, growthy calves that finish well and all replacements are kept, and surplus heifers and steers are finished. “We also run 1,200 Romney ewes, originally bred from the Marshall Romneys up in the Waitotara Valley, with recent genetics coming from Wairere Romneys. Our replacements are kept, and all lambs fattened on the farm,” says David. “Beef Shorthorns are well-known as a ‘traditional British breed’ and are a medium to large framed animal with a very docile temperament and excellent

milking ability. They are a great maternal breed producing easy finishing cattle with good growth rates and a high yield of marbled meat. They increase profit in crossbreeding situations, adding size and quality meat to finishing stock.” David says Santa Gertrudis, a Bos Indicus breed are a stabilised breed made up of Brahman and Shorthorn. “They are great foragers and can travel long distances for food and water. They are adaptable, bloat-resistant, tick resistant and drought resistant. The calves are born long and narrow-bodied with small heads, effectively eliminating calving trouble. The calves grow quickly to weaning and are excellent feed converters. “Each generation of our family has viewed the custodianship of the land and animals as a great privilege and responsibility. This means best practice in animal welfare while we create sustainable production from the land and looking after the people who make it all possible. “Our careful fertiliser selection, excluding cattle from waterways, thoughtful pasture management and the preservation of native stands of bush where kiwi live have allowed the property

The Shorthorn and Santa Gertrudis stud cattle produce hardy, growthy calves that finish well

to be farmed effectively for more than 110 years. “We always have an eye to the future and will continue to take new technologies and best practice on board, maintain and improve the property while honouring those that have come before. Our website glenrossie.co.nz was built by Tracy, and this has been a

fantastic tool for the stud and buyers. Our Facebook page, while primarily developed for marketing the cattle, also gives insights into everyday life around the farm. “Our farm is steeped in history and with no signs of slowing down in the future and looks to be a part of Northland heritage for many years to come.”

Motorcycle Lab Suzuki Whangarei Glenn and Amanda Smith opened a small motorcycle shop, Motorcycle Lab in the Town Basin, Whangarei six years ago. Motorcycle Lab has grown from the humble team of two to a team of seven. They have expert staff and technicians where people can talk directly to the crew about their bikes, servicing, parts, tyres, batteries, new motorcycles and everything in between. Customers can have their motorcycles serviced, get a WOF or pick up a set of new riding gear. Motorcycle Lab’s most recent addition to their business is the Suzuki franchise. The dealership will see Motorcycle Lab stocking a range of Suzuki road, commuter, off-road and farm ATVs for sale while providing expert Suzuki dealer approved servicing on-site. “We are excited to offer Suzuki as it complements our current business and meets requests to provide offroad and ATV products. Suzuki also has an exciting range of road bikes from LAMS approved through to highperformance motorcycles. To see the business expanding in a way where we can continue to be Northland’s performance motorcycle specialists was extremely important in our decisionmaking process,” says Glenn. “We are absolutely committed to maintaining our focus on high-level customer service with our clients who

have been part of the journey so far and look forward to welcoming new customers to the Motorcycle Lab family.” Suzuki New Zealand says they are pleased that their motorcycle range will continue to enjoy exceptional dealer representation in the Whangarei region and invite you to call into Motorcycle Lab and meet Glenn, Amanda and their staff. “They are ready to answer any questions you may have and are keen to offer you the high level of service you can expect from any Suzuki dealer.” Glenn is from a farming background

and enjoys helping farmers with their motorcycle needs. “I grew up around Northland farming so understand farm life, hunting and fishing and appreciate the necessity of bikes working to their optimum level. We pick up and deliver farm bikes free of charge across the Whangarei district, and look forward to meeting more farmers in the area. “Come along to 119 Lower Dent Street for more information on motorcycle services from DynoTune, custom work, and the new Suzuki range and servicing.”

There’s a classic recipe for a proper hard-working van, and it’s safe to say that relative newcomers to the scene LDV have hit the right combination of power and practicality to impress their target audience. When looking for a van to turn into a working partner, three things stand out — reliability, ease of use and comfort. The LDV G10 Cargo Van neatly ticks those boxes and then adds a bit more to more than justify its very tidy price. Those looking to balance the budget and still recruit a willing workhorse that will last the distance are already paying attention to this new contender. Addressing both performance and stamina, the G10 comes with a choice of two power options, either a two litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 165kw mated to a six-speed auto box or a two-litre naturally aspirated unit with fuel injection. Both deliver fuel economy figures in the mid-11 litres per 100km range, and both have been designed to be easy to service and hard to punish. When it comes to ease of use, LDV have listened to tradies and couriers, who want massive cargo space, wide-opening doors both to the rear and to the sides, and lots of options for carrying different sized and shaped loads. That means an unimpeded 2.4 x 1.278 x 1.270 metre cargo bay, along

with modern luxuries such as reversing cameras to help line up with loading docks and tricky spaces. It’s in terms of comfort that the G10 moves streets ahead of the classic old van layout. Gone is the rattly old ‘church pew’ seating of ancient vans, replaced with a car-like layout and a full multimedia system. That sense of

Small car for big adventures by Andy Bryenton

When Ford announced, in the not too distant past, that they would soon deliver a tiny sports utility out of India, the world was perhaps not quite ready for just how global the blue oval brand had become. Never mind that luxury marque Jaguar — also once owned by Ford — now comes from the factories of the economically booming subcontinent. The EcoSport surpassed expectations, carving out a niche in the category it was intended for — hip, young trendy adventure seekers with urban parking space anxieties but the need for a cruiser, which can go anywhere. It also garnered a massive following with another key demographic, who enjoyed the economy, high seating position and ease of ingress and egress the small sporty machine offered. These were the over-65s, and across the market, this slice of the population have become big customers for ‘crossover’ SUVs in general. The cool, frugal EcoSport ticked all their boxes, from easy to use infotainment through to superb safety. Now there’s a new look for the 2018 EcoSport, making the peppy little Ford firecracker seem more eager than ever to get to grips with both urban and rural roads. Retained — for now — is another cute feature, which throws a salute to the huge off-roaders of yesteryear — that back-door-stowed spare tyre. It may disappear in the near future. Beyond looks, there’s that gem of an engine under the hood to write home about. Ford’s one-litre masterpiece

scooped engine of the year honours in 2017, and it’s pure witchcraft how so much power can be wrung from the tiny turbo mill. In fact, this engine has won top gong as the world’s best no less than six times. Delivering 92kW and 170Nm of torque to propel the tiny EcoSport, the engine is mated to a six-speed transmission and cooled by a special shutter system, which opens

2018 EcoSport is an absolute bargain considering its credentials, trophy cabinet and a grab-bag of features for the price. In a very competitive sector, filling up with small sports utilities and cross-over super-mini-off-roaders, this might just be the daddy — the touchstone, which defines the type, just like the old Golf GTi did for the Euro hot hatchback in the 80s.

the grille for more cool air under load, and snaps shut for better aero effects when the going isn’t so tough. So, an award-winning engine, a comfy, safe cabin with everything just to hand, enough space for five adults and their gear. Sounds like a nice recipe. Even nicer is the price Ford has been able to offer thanks to their global design and manufacturing power. The

Tragic kiwi loss

by Jill Dickie

A deceased kiwi has been discovered at Trounson Kauri Forest Park on June 27, and the Department of Conservation are imploring local residents and all members of the public to be vigilant in controlling their dogs. The female kiwi was a significant participant in the breeding population in the forest, and her death is a great loss to the programme. She was one of the earliest birds banded in 1996, and the location she was found in, was also where she was last found in 1999. At the time of her attack, she was carrying an egg. “That is a sad end for this bird’s story,” said DOC biodiversity supervisor, Megan Topia. “The monogamous pairs have the potential to raise four chicks per breeding season, and the loss of this breeding female means that not only have we lost her future contribution to

the kiwi population, but her mate will also not be able to contribute again until he finds another female,” said Megan. “Kiwi can live until they are 50, but in Northland, the average age is only 14 years old due to dog predation. In Northland, roaming dogs are the biggest threat to kiwi survival.” The deceased bird was sent for forensic testing, and DOC confirms the dog saliva found is now being profile tested to determine if they can identify an individual. This evidence is helpful if a dog is captured wandering around Trounson and they can then test to see if that individual was responsible for this kiwi’s death.

It is estimated that there are 30 to 40 pairs in the 276ha main block at Trounson Kauri Park, and DOC want all people living in, or close to kiwi areas such as Trounson and the Waipoua Forest to keep their dogs under control and give kiwi a chance to reach old age. All dogs — no matter the age, gender and size — are capable of crushing the

delicate bodies and organs of juvenile and adult kiwi. The best way to stop this from happening is to make sure they don’t meet. Anyone who has seen any roaming dogs in the Trounson Kauri Park area should contact Dog Control 0800 105 890 or DOC 0800 362 468.
