Regional Economic Development minister, Shane Jones and Employment minister Willie Jackson, announced that the Provincial Growth Fund, through the He Poutama Rangatahi programme, will invest $421,050 in Wahine Toa. The five-month intensive pilot initiative was launched in Kaikohe to prepare mostly young women for training and employment in the forestry sector. “Investing in skills and training is a clear priority for this government, and I am pleased to see both HPR and the PGF’s other employment scheme, Te Ara Mahi, already making a difference to people’s lives up and down the country,” Shane Jones, Regional Economic Development minister said Mr Jones. “As forestry minister, I know labour another HPR programme funded shortages are a significant concern for through the PGF that was announced the sector, so initiatives like Wahine Toa in March this year. For the second year running, the Browning family of Waihue Valley have received the Semex Type and Production Award for their Jersey herd at Totara Dale Stud. “The competition was against other Jersey NZ members right through the country. We won it last year and never thought we would get it again this year, that is very difficult to do,” says Nick. Nick runs the farm with his wife Steph and parents Trevor and Megan. The farm is 400 hectares with hill country, 350 milking cows and the approximately 55 Jersey bulls are reared each year. “We are members of the Northern Wairoa Jersey Club and Jersey NZ. For the Semex competition, the judge travels the country visiting teams of five cows on-farm. The award is for type, breed and production worth of an animal,” says Nick. “My parents began the stud and I took over from them. They are still a big part of what we do. The secret is breeding good cows. I am the fourth generation involved with the Jerseys. My grandmother Margaret Pinny had her own stud, which started from her parents. I still have a few of her genetics and have continued on with my parent’s herd as well. “I like to breed a pure, straight cow, not a crossbred. Jersey are good for hill country because they are lighter on their

feet with good low somatic cell counts. For the hills we have they accomplish the production we need. Their higher milk fat content means you don’t need as many litres to get the quality breakdown of proteins and fat of milk. “The Jersey Club is for anyone with an interest in the breed. Some members just have five to six cows and rear calves. “Ours get well looked after with their feed, and we milk once a day at Christmas to help take the pressure

off the stock over the summer. It lets them cruise and come into the next season looking awesome. We also rear and sell Jersey bulls for the dairy market for heifer mating. Taking out the award twice was amazing, I was stoked receiving it last year and never thought we would do it again this year. Our cattle also won in the World Wire Sires Jersey Photo Competition.”

by Ann van Engelen Courtney Davies breeds and shows Ayrshire cattle, is an environmental educator in schools, will represent New Zealand at the Rural Ambassador competition in Australia and the Bayer Youth Ag Summit, taking place in Brazil.

T

he summit, run in partnership with Bayer and Nuffield Brazil, brings together young change-makers to tackle the challenges of how to feed a growing population by 2050. At 23 years old Courtney teaches students through the Sir Peter Blake Trust about sustainability and the environment through virtual reality, and she will share her ideas for tackling global food security on the world stage in early November. “I travel around schools using virtual reality to show the students what is going on in the oceans, and the relationship this has with actions we carry out on

the land. This enables them to make their own decisions about what they are seeing. The pilot year has received really positive feedback,” says Courtney. “It is great to see the different deciles and opportunities to make learning fun, which is what inspired me to think about how we could use virtual reality to establish those conversations about agriculture in our communities.” “I am looking forward to representing our country at the summit. From 2,800 applications worldwide, 100 were chosen from 45 different countries. We will be able to collaborate and work on our pool of ideas to make them a reality.

“Your total harvesting and marketing solution”

Courtney Davies will represent New Zealand at the Bayer Youth Ag Summit in Brazil and the Royal Ambassador Competition in Australia this year

“To be considered, we had to suggest an idea of what we could do to reduce global hunger and present a video.”

Courtney pitched ideas on how to tackle food insecurity in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES July 2019

She focussed on creating accessible education opportunities in agriculture for young people by utilising technology such as virtual reality. “Using technology to present what is going on in agriculture helps because what is seen in the media is a disconnect between urban and rural communities. Being able to show what is really happening and what New Zealand has to offer will hopefully encourage more people to become involved. Many people think agriculture is just milking a cow or being on a station in the high country, but you can be involved in other areas. I envisage being inspired by other ideas throughout the world and how we can use them to best impact the position New Zealand has in the fight against world hunger. “My Ayrshire Stud, Inca Ayrshires is doing well, and I am slowly increasing my herd. Ayrshires are under-represented as people typically think Jersey or Holstein cows. I began by purchasing the second-tier animals that farmers were willing to sell, looking at overall confirmation and production potential before concentrating on specific traits. I have bred a few calves and am looking forward to the ones that are about to be born. I also buy and sell to increase my genetic pool.” Courtney is heavily involved in the Northern Districts Royal Agricultural Society Youth. “Due to M bovis, there weren’t many cattle shows last season, so I focussed

on finishing my master’s degree in natural science and working on my breeding. We are hoping there will be more shows again this year. “For my masters, my thesis project was on bacteriophages. “The microbes in soils link to agriculture and lab research. There are a lot of implications, which I can use in the farming sector with antibiotic resistance. The bacteriophage isn’t well known but can help with things like the different types of mastitis. The virus itself is a natural predator of bacteria with the same ability to kill them just like antibiotics; however, bacteria are much slower to develop resistance. I researched the particular protein that has the killing property against bacteria and used it to help develop a prophylactic antimicrobial spray. This is helpful in places such as cowsheds, hospitals and across human and agricultural medicine.” Courtney is travelling to the Perth Royal Show in September to represent New Zealand at the Rural Ambassador competition. “It is a leadership programme and we are interviewed, judged on our involvement in agriculture and the impact we have on youth in agriculture. We will exchange ideas and utilise these to enhance our shows here. “All these events are about progressing the agricultural movement worldwide. Our input is just as important as everyone else’s around the world.

Courtney completed her Master of Natural Science in microbiology at Massey University

Comparing and contrasting with the different environments helps everyone come up with new solutions from knowledge and experiences others have gone through — it is about learning and advancing together. I believe agriculture

will become very technology focussed with robotic milking systems, things making farming more cost and time efficient. There are a lot of endless possibilities, but I hope we stay true to our type of farming here in New Zealand.”

Focussing on Jersey by Ann van Engelen After years of commitment to the Jersey cattle breed, Margaret Pinny of Waihue Valley has received the Jersey NZ Distinguished Members Award.

E

ighty-year-old Margaret grew up among the breed in Piopio and inherited cows off her parents who started their Jersey stud in 1945. “I attended calf club from four years old and have been involved with calf club for 40 years,” said Margaret. “My grandson Nicholas and his wife Stephanie are sharemilking for Nick’s parents Trevor and my daughter Megan on the Waihue farm. I was able to pass my stock on to them, and they have continued with some of those genetics. You can run more stock on your property because they are a lighter animal and easier to handle. There are still original family cows here — they are known as the Owlyn Family. Pine Lyn Sams Owlyn was one of the top families for me. I still have interest in the breeding and

spend time viewing the calves when they are born, I wander over and see which ones I think are good. Megan and Trevor also run beef as the farm consists of land not suitable for dairy. You need to make the genetics work to breed good stock and choose a bull that is going to make your breeding better, but this doesn’t always happen. Originally my husband Rex and I did a lot of culling of cows that weren’t producing or that had traits like bad feet. They need good feet to walk long distances, especially on bigger farms. We also breed for type and production. “I have been in the north for 23 years and for 20 of them have been secretary of the Northern Wairoa Jersey Club. During the 80s I worked with Jersey NZ choosing young sires for semen to be

purchased by farmers and I would take orders from Cape Reinga to Bluff. I have enjoyed making many friends throughout the country with the same interests. Going to different sales of animals, and when herds are dispersed, you know the background of their breeding. “My main interest now is helping Megan and encouraging children to have calves for calf club. Sometimes you get a child come along, and you can see they haven’t had the knowledge to bring the calf up to standard. We teach them how to keep a cover on, keep it clean, brush it and feed it. They often return the next year and have done so much better. “I feel a lot of pride for them when they make progress. I was always a calf club judge, never a senior like Megan and now Nick, but saw generations of families come through. I got thrown in the deep end when I was young judging for someone who didn’t turn up and was then asked to help at times. You had to make some very quick decisions on calf placings, and when you judge a calf and it ends up champion or reserve you know, you made the right decision. “Nick’s children are fifth generation handling pedigree Jersey cattle. Megan and I run an all breeds youth competition each year after calf club is finished so the children can gain extra ribbons. We go farm to farm and judge the youth competition with an outside judge, so we don’t risk anyone’s animals with the M bovis issue by having them at a show. “Trevor, Megan, Nick and Stephanie recently won the Semex competition for type and production, which is based on BW-PW values plus type. competition is New Zealand wide, and the second year in a row Totara Dale Jerseys has accomplished this. I am very proud to see the family doing well and see my grandson Nick’s passion for the Jersey cows continuing on and achieving awards. It is no easy feat to continue on from another person. Last year at the big dairy event in Fielding Nick was assistant judge in the ring and has now become a judge with Jersey NZ. “Getting the Distinguished Members Award was a lovely surprise. Jerseys are a little golden cow and there is something about their personality. They look at you with these big dozy eyes and become great pets.

“My parents started their stud in 1945, and I took over in 1960. Megan and Trevor took over from me and Rex around 1996 when we formed Totara Dale farm. It is more difficult for young farmers to get on the land now because property and animals have got expensive. If you are sharemilking and are finding it difficult, just hang in there and work hard because your work ethic will help get you to succeed.”

Don and Kirstin Lawson are passionate about nature and plants, and through their business Greenspace Plants, they supply people with a variety of plants to help beautify and enhance natural landscapes.

D

on has loved plants and gardening since he was a young boy helping his grandfather on his quarter acre section. He followed his passion and completed an apprenticeship in Auckland Parks, gaining a Trade Certificate in Amenity Horticulture and Turf Management. He then progressed his career by managing significant parks and open spaces in both Auckland and London. “Don’s grandad was a real passionate gardener, and he would spend a lot of time with him. Don is the one with the knowledge, and I have learnt as we go. I raise and pot up seedlings, or work in the orchard and veggie garden with our daughter Sophie and son Ben growing and harvesting food for our family,”

says Kirstin. “We moved to London in 2000 and Don worked for a few different councils there. He ended up working with the City of London Corporation, which is quite prestigious. “He was managing the parks in the ‘square mile’. That is old London town from the medieval times around Liverpool St and Chancery Lane. That was an awesome experience for a kiwi, and he learned a lot that relates to what we are doing now. “We came back to New Zealand to be close to our families and brought in Maungaturoto because we wanted the country lifestyle. The nursery is around 1,000 square metres, and we grow a wide range of plants from natives, and edibles like citrus trees, ornamental

Some like to hold moisture and others like free draining, so we create to suit the need at the time. It is nice and clean to work with, and we don’t need to worry about what may be in the mix, which is safer.” The couple also supplies plants for the regeneration of wetlands and septic fields. “We help people with options for their stream banks to stop erosion and all manner of projects. Plants are adaptable if you care for them right, especially once they are potted up and outside. It is making sure they are watered and constantly monitoring what is going on to ensure they are ok. We use frost cloth at night for young plants if necessary. “I love talking to people and discovering the various projects that are going on around the district. It is exciting to find new plants that we haven’t had before and learning about them. “Sophie sorts seedlings into tubes, and Don’s aunt and uncle come and help out once a week as well.” The property also facilitates the family to raise a few beef cattle. “We buy Hereford cross heifer calves and raise them to two-year-olds. Sophie

The Lawsons make their own potting soil to grow their seedlings and plants in

and Ben help with the calf rearing. They enjoy getting out in the mud and participating at calf day at school. Sophie has chickens and sells the eggs. I would love to try raising Brahman cattle as they are so cute with their big ears. They are very hardy with good meat and are great milk makers too. “Helping rural people replenish their property with our kauri trees and other natives is rewarding. “Kauri is exciting as people are looking toward the future of the iconic tree and our little seedlings will one day be a forest giant. The same with the kahikatea, one day they will be mighty trees that started in our nursery from

seed we collected. Don does all our seed collecting or we get seedlings from another nursery and raise them. We deal with people we trust and have built great relationships with. It is good to work together and do the right thing to get positive results. “My big achievement at present is establishing some Chatham Islands Forget-me-not plants, which they say are difficult to grow. I am very excited about being able to supply these. “We are always happy to give advice on planting projects and grow large quantities if they are required and will try to source any plants we may not have in stock.”

ADVERTORIAL ADVERTORIAL

Preparing for flowering Should I take coenzyme Q10?

by Erica Faber, Orchard Productivity Manager, Just Avocados

With the seasonal change of lower temperatures and shorter day lengths, flower initiation in our avocado trees has been triggered. Hormones trigger the transition from vegetative to floral buds, but it is the nutrient levels and balances that drive this reaction and the carbohydrate levels that determine the stamina of this reaction. This pre-flowering stage is one of those critical stages that we as growers need to ensure the tree has all the resources it needs in order to optimise production. The following nutrients are important to apply during this time to support the imminent flower initiation as well as the current crop. Firstly, ensure correct nitrogen levels. Too much of a good thing is not always a good thing! Excessive nitrogen in the tree at this time will swing the balance in favour of vegetative growth, thereby compromising potential flowering and fruit set. Foliar sprays of seaweed products will boost cytokinin levels as seaweed extracts are particularly rich in cytokinins. Low cytokinin levels in relation to other hormones will inhibit floral bud development. Avocados are an incredibly boronhungry crop, and their low flower to fruit ratio can be substantially improved with a foliar spray of boron at the preflowering stage.

Calcium fulfils many essential roles in the sexual reproduction of flowering plants. It is also called the “trucker of all minerals” because it directly affects all mineral uptake. It is therefore advisable to apply calcium at this stage as well, not only for the flower development and fruit set but also for its role in the current developing crop. Calcium governs cell wall strength and not only improves fruit quality but also aids in resistance to anthracnose and post-harvest rots. Potassium is extremely important during this fruit-fill stage. Insufficient levels of potassium reduce the yield potential and quality of the crop and ultimately our pockets! Zinc is one of the most crucial elements in carbohydrate metabolism in plants. Most enzymes that play a role in carbohydrate metabolism are activated by zinc. Zinc is also an essential micronutrient for protein production in plants. One of the sites of protein synthesis is the pollen tube. Remember to ensure compatibility when mixing your chemicals and fertilisers. If you are concerned about any incompatibility or phytotoxicity, contact the manufacturers or do a jar or spray test.

(Part two) We generally make all the coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) we need. Some, however, should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzymes that produce cholesterol. It is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can significantly reduce circulating CoQ10. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a month on high-grade CoQ10 (CoQsol), the pain had completely gone and is now able to tolerate the medication without side effects. I generally find it takes one to two months to restore muscle function and energy. Muscle issues from statin use are one of the most common reasons from muscle and tendon pain and weakness. It is a shame that many suffer needlessly, as in most cases, it is quickly resolved with a highquality CoQ10 without having to stop the medication. What makes CoQ10 unique is its ability to accept and donate electrons. That enables CoQ10 to

move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make the energy your body requires. Inadequate CoQ10 levels reduce energy output, and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness. I regularly prescribe CoQ10 for those with health issues known to reduce energy, especially those with autoimmune or neurodegenerative problems. While CoQ10 is not a cure, it can help to lift general energy and wellbeing. In most cases, I will add CoQ10 as the patented CoQsol or my specialised MTQ10 formula for those needing extra CoQ10 plus a lift in energy. MTQ10 combines CoQ10 with a B complex plus other energy co-factors. Most people feel a real difference within one to two months. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Vets at the centre of their community The Vet Centre is a well-known name in Mangawhai, Ruawai, Waipu and Maungaturoto. Established in the 1960s as a veterinary club, the skilled team who operate across this wide area have become an intrinsic part of the community. They are out there saving animal’s lives but are also involved in many other aspects of rural life. Vet Centre spokesperson Zelda DeVilliers says that the bust, multihub practice works hard to innovate and make vet care accessible, caring and affordable. Initiatives such as a new gold card discount for seniors, a forthcoming pet dental month in September, the establishment of a mobile clinic and being on call 24/7 make it easier to access quality care for both companion animals and livestock. Then there’s a raft of projects to give back to the community, with events such as a pet parade in Waipu to support the town’s tartan week, sponsorship of the Taniwha Shield rugby tourney, and donations to groups as varied as the Mangawhai Fire Brigade and the Dargaville Lions. “Still operating as the Otamatea Vet Club and trading as The Vet Centre Inc, we remain a well-supported club, overseen by our executive committee who meet monthly to discuss and set policy,” says Zelda. “An annual general meeting is held to discuss financial reports, review the year that has passed and discuss plans for the year ahead, because we are an incorporated society, all profits are either returned to the business or passed on to the members by way of reduced fees.”

HORTICULTURE PRODUCTS & SERVICES Use the experts Caring for your rural property takes time, planning and ensuring you have the right equipment, knowledge and expertise at hand. In 1979 Bryant Tractors Ltd was established after seeing the need for a locally owned and operated tractor sales, service and repair business to cater for the Northland farming industry. The firm is still locally owned with director Murray Bale at the helm, making it one of the longest running businesses of its kind in the area. The company covers all of Northland, from the Auckland Harbour Bridge to the northern-most tip of the country and coast to coast. They are the agents for Massey Ferguson, Fendt, Iseki, Goldoni and an extensive range of mowers. The parts department offers new aftermarket parts and has a range of agricultural machinery, spray equipment and pumps, ride-on lawnmowers and stationary engines available. The team understand the demands placed on machinery at busy seasonal periods and repairs are prioritised to ensure downtime is a minimum. For professional tree management, Orang-Otang Tree Trimmers offers trimming and clearing of trees and can minimise the ecological impact by

upcycling all parts of the removed trees. Logging, stump grinding, sawmilling, chipping and mulching are available. The company’s residential and land clearance services include pruning, felling and chipping for councils, farmers, lifestyle blocks or residential situations, size does not matter. Orang-Otang is a fully insured, experienced, fully-qualified tree care and maintenance team and can offer advice with tree selection for new planting as well as general guidance on looking after your trees. Water Right Services specialise in irrigation systems, including pumping, pipelines and sprinklers. Peter Robinson has more than 35 years experience in the hydraulic design industry and 20 years, specifically in irrigation. The company has completed effluent disposal systems and has a focus on horticulture including avocado, kiwi fruit and some pip fruit. It is all about sustainability with systems designed to make the most efficient use of energy and water. They also provide fertiliser distribution systems

into the irrigation water, which often lifts crop productivity by at least 30 per cent and helps crops to produce annually rather than biannually. The modern technology and sophisticated systems allow orchards to be managed from anywhere in the world. “With the council tightening up on water use, we are able to look after the water compliance, and automatically send an email if the customer’s consent limits are being reached. We deal with every aspect of water in the orchard. It is about using water, in a sustainable, economical and ecologically friendly way because it is a very precious resource and I want to help make the best use of it for the country and individuals that want to grow something of value.”

Done once, done right Kevin from Dempster Diggers has an old-fashioned approach to his work, even though that work involves a large fleet of high tech machinery. You could say that ‘do it once, do it right’ is the catchphrase for both the man and his company; an adage that’s seen them grow into a multi-faceted excavation operation with a powerful reputation. Kevin has a lot of experience behind him when it comes to tackling titanic tasks with the aid of machinery. As his website says:

‘We have been hauling, digging, grading, knocking down and cleaning up for many happy customers since 1999.’ Add to that list drilling, post driving, rolling and more, and you can imagine the arsenal of machines which the Dempster team have mastered. Kevin and his staff themselves are the most important part of the operation. As in many life endeavours, it’s the brains and the expertise behind the brawn, which defines a difference. “We have the best machinery available in the industry. Specialised earthmoving equipment is essential to getting the job done quickly and efficiently, and we have what you need to get your job done,” says Kevin. At the same time, there’s a focus on service, skill and safety. “We take safety seriously and pride ourselves on our excellent record. Delivering affordable housing With the network news full of talk of an unalleviated housing crisis, and the ‘red tape’ required to put a new build together still stifling for some, call for an alternative solution to housing has been growing in the market. Thankfully, there’s another concept beyond building or buying, which is gaining traction. Buying a relocatable home combines some very modern concepts with some old fashioned common sense. First of all, a pre-loved home is recycled and eco-friendly. Above and beyond this, however, it’s proven already to have stood the test of time, weathertight and solid. Many homes suitable for relocation have been craftsman-built in the oldschool sense, using native timbers not available to the modern industry. It lends another aspect — character. To own a classic villa in the leafy suburbs could break the bank. To relocate one to a lifestyle block gives the best of heritage living and country views. The price is exceptionally low compared to other options, even when transport, piling and connections to water and power are factored in. Here in the north, a leading industry name is

Highway Housemovers, who has been shifting and installing homes for farmers, lifestyle block owners, first home buyers and investment landlords for decades. Adept at picking just the right homes to uplift and reutilise, they have another advantage too; the assistance of a registered financial adviser with 35 years experience, who can arrange finance on relocatable building deals. That suddenly puts a piece of land and a pre-loved home in the grasp of those who thought they would never attain their property dreams, with a conventional mortgage structure and financial peace of mind. With the manpower, the machinery and an eye for detail, Highway Housemovers is beating the housing crisis one successful move at a time. If you want to save on accommodation, invest or achieve home ownership the smart way, take a look at what this innovative company has to offer.

Highway Housemovers pack some serious power, with specialist trucks and a team of experts shifting whole homes by road

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

The barn or equipment shed has long been a vital component of any farming operation, keeping valuable machinery out of the weather or providing storage space for essentials such as feed and other consumables. In the past, most sheds have been relegated to secondary status due to a lack of electrical power. Working on machinery in situ used to mean lugging a generator, and upgrades to turn a simple shelter for equipment into a functioning workshop were almost out of the question. Developments in battery technology have led to innovative new ways to use solar and wind power, taking these applications from out of the realm of the ecologically conscious alone and into the domain of practical business. There are whole farms now off the grid and thriving. Photovoltaic systems fitted to a remote shed, therefore, can turn it into a hub for maintenance and repair without having to tax the electrical system of the farm itself. Lighting is the first advantage, redoubling workable hours in and around the shed. Security is another bonus, with low-drain remote security systems able to send a message to mobile devices and thus protect stores of fuel and assets like

motorcycles and quads. There’s even the possibility to run water to very remote outbuildings via solar-powered pumping stations. The power of the sun can be augmented by wind turbines or micro-hydroelectric systems placed in streams where applicable. With outlay costs for this kind of upgrade falling and the price of electricity still an issue of contention, off-grid systems are also popular due to

the fact that they can be applied piece by piece, taking over from mains power in specific applications. Now powerful enough and reliable enough to be used in industries such as telecommunication for long-term installations, it’s timely to weigh the cost of upgrading your shed or outbuilding the old-fashioned way or adopting new technology, which may save money in the long run.

The backbone of your build

Avoid Drink Driving

There’s no question that farm buildings must be designed to survive in the worst possible conditions. The average farmer envisions a good shed or barn as lasting for decades, all while suffering the heat of summer and the rains and chills of winter without failing. So there’s a lot of debate as to what makes the perfect core structure for the perfect outbuilding. Effectively, the choice today centres around steel or wood. Both have their advantages, with proponents of each side making a convincing case. Modern building techniques have given us more choice than ever, and both options are attractive. So the decision can come down to factors other than simple price. The case for wood starts with the trees themselves. We grow them here, and a shed or barn built with full-round posts takes advantage of the structure of the whole tree itself, grown strong and designed by millions of years of evolution. Those who built in wood cite a long history of human use of this natural and sustainable product, which sequesters carbon from the air as it grows, and is easy to add on to with little more than more wood and some nails and knowhow. They point to wooden barns built in places like the US and Europe before Captain Cook set sail for New Zealand, the frames of which, are still strong and aesthetically pleasing today, often incorporated into new builds. The argument for steel also emphasises strength; the term ‘strong as steel’ exists for a good reason, after all. This substance lends itself to modular construction, with the ability to easily disassemble bolted

subframes and sections to add on at a later date. Steel also has environmental credentials, which few people realise; it’s one of the few building materials that lose nothing from being recycled over and over again. Steel has a high recovery rate from demolished buildings, and recent research of commercial construction waste found that more than 90% of the steel was recycled. As for durability, those who build in steel can point to ancient swords and artefacts made by processes inferior to

current forging techniques but are still with us thousands of years later. In the end, the choice comes down to location, intended use and simple aesthetics. There are excellent arguments for building both in wood and steel, but the real winner is the farmer seeking to build, who enjoys a world of choice and flexibility when selecting a structure that will last the test of time.

In 2016 a campaign was begun to restore the oldest farm buildings in New Zealand. Standing on the current site of a functioning school, the Deans Farm in Canterbury was the core from which modern Christchurch grew. If buildings that date back to colonial times can be restored, then there is certainly scope for the upgrade and refurbishment of more prosaic structures on modern farms.

The Deans farm example may be a bit extreme, but there’s a lot to be said for the upkeep and restoration of existing structures on the farm. There are good bones beneath the rusted cladding on many farm structures, and a lot of utility still to be had from them. In these times, when building an entirely new structure may mean costly paperwork, the decision to do away with an otherwise useful barn or shed cannot be taken lightly. A simple solution is recladding, removing rusted or compromised exterior materials and replacing them with modern equivalents. Many older farm buildings come with dirt floors, which can degenerate into a muddy mess when the weather turns cold and damp. For those who use a large shed to store implements, it’s possible that the dirt floor that was up to the task of yesteryear’s smaller, lighter machines is not able to cope with larger and heavier equipment. Stabilisation of such surfaces can now be achieved without tearing down the entire structure, thanks to innovations such as modular ground reinforcement systems. These interlocking grids, made of polymers, can be sunk into a dirt floor

STEEL BUILDINGS with

to provide rigidity and stability. They’re even used to build temporary airfields by the military, so they can definitely suffice to make a hardier floor for an older barn or shed. It could even see an area become fit for use as a stable for horses, for example. Perhaps the ultimate upgrade seen to existing farm sheds and buildings is the conversion of what was once merely storage space to living space. On a working farm rather than a lifestyle block, it’s more likely that the techniques learned by building

companies in performing barn and shed conversions will be applied. Turning primitively appointed spaces into usable workstations for maintenance, repair or the uptake of secondary agricultural activities, such as repurposing a section of an equipment shed with the tools to service vehicles. The expertise is there; one Kiwi company goes even further, importing colonial barn frames from the US to use in creating modern homes. If your shed has solid timber or steel ‘bones’, modern building techniques can expand its lifespan and usefulness.

winter lifestyle block Winter on the block With winter here, it is important to ensure your stock are secure, and their needs are met under the Animal Welfare Act. With extra water on the ground, check the stability of boundary fences, even on a small property for the safety of your stock as well as members of the public travelling on the roads. A fencing contractor can help with this. If animals get out of their paddock and cause damage to property or vehicles, the stock owners are liable for all costs. Make sure you are aware of your legal responsibility of all animals on your property. Make sure horses have much more than pasture available to keep them in good order as they are not ruminants like cattle, sheep or goats, but they do digest fibre, and this process generates heat inside the animal. In winter a 500kg horse needs about 10kg of Dry Matter to maintain its body functions, and around 52kg of good quality pasture daily plus extra roughage as well as some concentrates and grain to help your horse keep out the cold. Tethered goats must have access to food, water

and fully shaded and dry shelter at all times and need to be relocated on a regular basis. They enjoy company so if possible have at least two with a variety of food available as they prefer options such as blackberry, fruit and shrubs. If your block is home to camelids, check their halter or any other piece of equipment does not cause cuts, abrasions, swelling or interference with breathing or drinking. That goes for all animals, and when caring for pigs, it is a must to ensure that they have a lying area that is dry and draught-free. Dogs must also be provided with a clean, dry, shaded, ventilated but not drafty shelter. They must be checked regularly, and they must be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down in a natural position. Like all animals, even in winter, they require constant access to water, and it is important that the dog’s droppings and urine are removed. New Zealand’s codes of animal welfare require all livestock to have access to areas free of surface water and mud, and appropriate shelter from adverse weather. Animals will refuse to lie down on wet ground and can then become stressed, stop eating, and are more susceptible to lameness. Owners are still responsible for the welfare of their stock while they

Fifty-nine per cent of farmers who provided feedback supported Beef + LambNZ’s proposals, which included raising the maximum rate for cattle under the new levy.

The levy will increase from $0.45/ head to $2/head, with an initial levy rate of $1.80/head for beef cattle, and allowing different rates to be set for different stock classes, so that dairy cattle could be exempt from a ‘beef cattle’ levy for the M bovis response. B+LNZ sought farmers’ views on lifting the cap on the biosecurity levy so the beef sector can meet its six per cent ($17.4 million) share of the costs of the M bovis response. That is an increase on the maximum levy rate approved by farmers when consulted on the Government Industry Agreement (GIA) proposal in 2017. “Farmers have told us they recognise the importance of the M bovis response and the need for the beef cattle industry to actively play its part in helping to eradicate the disease,” says B+LNZ chairman Andrew Morrison. “We also understand the concerns of farmers around the effectiveness of the response and that the announcement about a backlog of investigations and testing has undermined some farmers’ confidence. “B+LNZ needs to have a seat at the table to ensure beef farmers’ views are heard. Waste milk risks

DAIRY

Waste milk has traditionally been fed to calves to dispose of milk that can’t be sent for supply, but DairyNZ senior scientist Jane Lacy-Hulbert has investigated if it is a good idea. With an increased focus on the responsible use of antibiotics, questions are being asked about waste milk’s value as a feed source for calves, and the risks this practice might pose to the wider environment. Waste (or ‘red’) milk is the milk produced by lactating cows when they are sick and receiving antimicrobial treatment for diseases such as mastitis. It also applies to the milk produced in the withholding period, which can be three to four days after treatment. Exposing a bacterial population, such as the calf’s developing digestive tract,

to low concentrations of antibiotics may encourage bacterial growth with existing resistance genes. It could also lead to other bacteria mutating and developing new ways to resist antibiotics. The risk is that calves consuming this milk will shed antibiotic-resistant faecal bacteria into the environment. It could have unintended consequences for your calves, and the future usefulness of the antibiotic. That is backed up by a substantial review published in the European Union in 2017. The review found that shedding was more pronounced for younger calves (two to

infect the young calf. If there are more antibiotic-resistant bacteria present in the gut, these issues would be harder to control. Although waste milk may be a convenient feed for calves, is it worth the risk for the health of the replacement calf, or to the environment? One thing is certain it cannot be fed to bobby calves, as the calf’s gut is likely to absorb the antibiotic residues and cause the carcass to be rejected. It’s ‘not’ ok to feed waste milk to ‘any’ calves. Find out more about calf care at dairynz.co.nz/calves.

three weeks old), compared to six to seven-week-old calves. Fortunately, this shedding wasn’t observed in calves fed colostrum from cows previously treated at dry-off with long-acting dry cow antibiotic products. Unfortunately, pasteurising waste milk won’t deactivate the residues, as most antibiotics are heat-stable. Although there are few studies on this aspect, it is likely that antibiotic residues would interfere with calves establishing good gut bacteria, or that pathogens and viruses from older, sick cows could

Award for red meat

Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Taste Pure Nature country of origin brand was recognised at the inaugural Primary Industries Awards. “Taste Pure Nature has been a team effort not just within Beef + Lamb New Zealand, but right across the red meat sector both here domestically and with export-marketing companies operating in the United States,” says B+LNZ general manager Market Development Nick Beeby. “This award is an acknowledgement of the significant effort and unprecedented cooperation everyone has put in across the board in bringing Taste Pure Nature to life over the past two years.” While the team is stoked with the award, they are very much focussed on the future of Taste Pure Nature. “We are still in the very early phases of Taste Pure Nature’s pilot roll-out in California, and we have already learnt valuable lessons in the first three months, which we are applying to our next tranche of in-market activity. We are looking forward to updating farmers about what is happening on the ground in the coming weeks.” Registrations are also open for the Red Meat Sector Conference being held in Christchurch from July 28–29. This year’s conference will look at the global ‘heat on meat’ and how the red meat sector can position itself in an increasingly ‘post-truth’ world. There is plenty of heat on meat at

the moment with the public, scientists, and regulators taking a closer look at red meat’s impact on the environment and its role in our diets. With so many voices out there, all with their own take on the pros and cons of red meat, how do you know what is true and what is ‘fake news’? Whether it is better understanding the oftenconflicting science and how to apply it to a New Zealand context, taking advantage of emerging opportunities in China, or navigating the fraught waters around Brexit or United States trade policy, this year’s conference features speakers who will offer valuable insights into the issues facing the sector. The annual Red Meat Sector Conference is jointly hosted by the Meat Industry Association of New Zealand and Beef + Lamb New Zealand, with registrations for all registered sheep and beef farmers being subsidised by Beef + Lamb New Zealand. Elegant eco-efficiency It’s funny how time can blur preconceptions and make a mockery of stereotypes. When the first hybrid vehicles hit the road, in the not so distant past, there was everything short of warfare between those who drove large sports utility vehicles and those who were early adopters of greener tech. Now, at a stroke, the last grumbles of that argument have been more than put to rest, as Range Rover enjoy great success with their own plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It’s a sublime marriage of the things, which have made the Range Rover great across the years; its off-road abilities, power, comfort and style, blended with the ability to deliver a fuel sipping 3.6 litres for every 100 kilometres, or more than 50km on electric power alone. There hasn’t been any watering down of the power on tap here. There are still close to 400 horses under the hood, with backup for the Range Rover’s lightweight engine coming from an 85kw electric motor and a low-mounted battery pack to increase stability. This large vehicle accelerates from 0-100kp/h in just 6.8 seconds, which was supercar fast not so long ago (exactly the same as a 1991 Porsche 911). Bear in mind that raw speed is not the party piece of this machine, however. For all its elegance and luxurious interior trappings, the PHEV Range Rover is all about conquering harsh conditions, and it still wades, climbs, crawls and descends hills with military aplomb. In

fact, EV only mode makes for silent, scalpel-accurate low-speed driving. Range Rover has been quietly innovating since the inception of the brand, with successive generations introducing smart ideas, which are carried on into

the future. From the idea of a folding tailgate, which forms a handy seat or bench through to modern innovations such as a phone app to pre-heat or cool the cabin, there is a lot to explore beyond the PHEV underpinnings of this

eco-conscious Range Rover. Need we even mention that the Queen drives one? This feat of engineering deserves a test drive just to see how ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘luxurious power’ can live together in harmony.

MUFFLER SERVICES

A farming triple threat by Andy Bryenton

In show business, the triple threat refers to a performer who can sing, dance and act in equal measure. Here, we’re talking about the ability to mow, dig and move materials with aplomb. It’s a feat made possible with a single small tractor and three perfectly balanced pieces of equipment, all of them from Kubota. The package starts with the b3150, a small machine with big potential thanks to its 31 horsepower Kubota E-TVCS diesel engine. That is power enough to tackle utility jobs around the lifestyle block or farmyard, in places where larger tractors cannot fit. In fact, if a big contractor with a 100 horseplus machine takes care of your major tasks in the field, this bright orange workhorse could very well fill in all the gaps. Operators can choose an open top with rollover protection or a fully airconditioned enclosed cab, but whether it’s a ‘coupe’ or ‘convertible’, Kubota’s b3150 really shines when teamed up with its suite of equipment options. At the front, there’s the LA534A loader. This broad bucket offers a large lifting capacity, perfect for landscaping or light utility work. The curved boom matches the new hood design for a sleek and modern appearance and provides a better field of vision. Down the back, all it takes is a spin of the seat to command the BH77 backhoe, a trenching and digging tool that does the work of a whole gang of shovelwielding workers.

Moreover, because there may be plenty of other tasks required of the rear PTO, Kubota have made sure it’s easy to attach and detach fast. In the middle, you can opt in a mower with a 72 inch wide cutting deck, perfect for those bigger lawns, which come with the homestead or lifestyle block. In heavy construction, the combination of a loader on the front

and a backhoe behind has become a mainstay when large projects have to come together fast. The Kubota b3150 puts a similar combination in the reach of the rural or lifestyle user; inexpensive enough for the home orchard or handling feed for livestock, but also powerful enough to step up and assist in commercial farming’s secondary roles.

Working hand in hand by Andy Bryenton

We are all looking for a perfect balance in life, and nowhere more so than in our automotive purchases. Size and space versus handling and fuel economy, speed and good looks versus cost and utility. Then the big one — eco-conscious, inexpensive to run; but with the long range needed for Kiwi highways. Electric vehicles come with extended range each generation, but for those who want to embrace a solution right now (and one that has gone through customer feedback, research, tweaking, development and problem solving to prove itself) might find the answer right under their noses. It’s the traditional hybrid system, and it’s come a long way since the first attempts at a fuel/electric partnership back in the late 1990s. Yes, it really has been that long. An equal amount of time that the flagship for the non-plug-in, original hybrid concept, the Toyota Prius, became the darling of the Hollywood progressive set. Today’s Prius is not an early adopter’s novelty or a sign of conspicuous ecological credentials. It’s a no-nonsense machine that does what the people want; it transports a family in safety and comfort for long distances while using very, very little fuel. Recent tests by one of our local auto experts confirm that you’ll visit the petrol station on a monthly rather than a weekly basis, as the petrol engine receives a healthy boost from its electric counterpart. Moreover, there’s more to

A good idea made better — the Prius has become more than an image or a tech marvel, delivering dependable economy and range

love. The new Prius is roomier, handles better, and has modern batteries with a vastly extended shelf life. Technology to replenish these batteries is getting cheaper and more efficient by the day, as they are the same kind used by purely electric cars. Then

there’s range anxiety. You get precisely zero with a traditional hybrid, which is great in the Kiwi hinterland. Stopping in downtown Los Angeles is a bit of an inconvenience. Stopping for a charge in the Mangamukas is slightly worse. Range

and the combination of good range with reliability and excellent fuel economy are why the Prius is the mainstay of many corporate fleets, and beloved of ridesharing drivers. The modern iteration of this wellknown brand is well worth a test drive.

July 2019  NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

The old original recipe Some things in life well outside the realm of internal combustion can be improved by the application of what some people call Chapman’s Law. It’s more of a guideline, really, but the big name behind Lotus achieved remarkable success with it. Simplify, then add lightness. Colin Chapman applied this adage to some of the most fearsomely efficient racing cars of the 20th century, and his name lives on through a company that produce machines, which are a joy to drive. You can simplify and add lightness in other areas of life to just as sublime a result — packing holiday luggage, baking a cake. In the case of Suzuki, creating the perfect bike for the farm and lifestyle block. It’s a recipe that’s been around for a fair few years, but like the contents of the Edmond’s book, it’s still popular. The DR200 has seen minor changes here and here, to what this metaphor insists we call the ‘icing’, the switch to single shock rear suspension, or the fitment of brighter halogen lighting, for example. Underneath, the same 200cc engine pumps out a lot of useful torque, even if it’s no speed machine. It’s still equipped with a carburettor because it’s easy and reliable for a single cylinder, single overhead cam set-up. It still has a rear drum brake so that it won’t get clogged with dirt and mud. It still comes with protection from the bumps and stumps including bash plates below and bars to keep your lights and fingers unmolested.

The Suzuki DR200 design has endured the test of time on Kiwi farms, and now on lifestyle blocks too

Furthermore, it still dominates in the mud. Suzuki designed the DR200 here in New Zealand, wisely acknowledging that our rural conditions are some of the most demanding anywhere. So for several decades, it’s been a bit of a

benchmark. There’s little to improve, in the same way as the classic bowie knife or vanilla ice cream can’t really be improved. However, there is a new side to the busy little battler. With more and more

people looking to semi-rural lifestyle living, the fact that you can kit out a DR series bike with number plates and indicators means that you can have a companion for the mud that’s also nifty to nip down to the shops on.
