Secretary Nat Lynch, says the concept of a Gumboot Ball was simple — “put on your glad rags and gumboots and dance the night away.” The club partnered with the Northland Field Days Society to hold the the event at Tokatoka Tavern with musical entertainment provided by local band, Fired Up. “The event was well attended with people from all over the north coming to the Northern Wairoa for a great night out.” Catherine Stewart of Bayleys Real Estate sponsored prizes for the Prince and Princess of the Gumboot Ball Awards which went to Thomas Macdonald and Jo Bower. Spot prizes were also up for grabs, for everything from ‘blinging boots’ to ‘best use of a kilt’. The event was held in the Northern Wairoa because the Northern Region Young Farmers are hoping to start a Dargaville based club in the immediate future and Nat encourages prospective members to get in touch. “A big part of belonging to a club is that it’s about being social and getting off the farm and having the chance to

talk to other like-minded people and get involved in a variety of activities.” Leeann Morgan the Northern Region Field Officer for young farmers says setting up a club in Dargaville is a great idea. “Being a former Dargaville resident myself — I grew up there so the idea of having a club locally would be fantastic. Leeann says the club will allow for social as well as personal development opportunities. “So in some cases it’s just a night off the farm to talk about issues everyone is facing. In other cases it’s about leadership and competitions and it allows them to take part in the FMG young farmer of the year grand final. This year it is being held in Timaru and Jake Thomson a local Northland young farmer is involved in that. “That’s a televised event so it’s quite an honor to be involved and there are some amazing prizes up for grabs and statistically the northern region has done quite well in that region, so we have our fingers crossed for Jake.” Contact: northernyoungfarmers@ hotmail.com, or 021 824 488.

spell at the Thames goldfields and the Gisborne area, he shifted to the Northern Wairoa where his sisters were living. “He became involved in farming and contract building bridges and making roads. On May 3 1882 he married Ann Bassett in Auckland and they lived at Pah Hill, across the river from Te Kopuru and Tatarariki. In 1886, he purchased land at Tatarariki and built a house on the property. He shifted there with his family in 1893.” He called the house Clanrye after the river that runs through his hometown in Newry. The 320-acre farm was flat, very wet and more than half of the land was covered with bush. “The first job was to dig drains. The house was built on the highest and driest place. The story is told that James would walk some distance out from the house, stand amongst the flax and raupo, jump up and down and as far as the eye could see the tops would shake. He would then sit down and cry,” said Roger. “With his two older sons Tom and Hugh, they drained, fenced and cleared enough land to milk some cows and when the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company was opened in 1902 he was among the first suppliers. “The first cowshed was steam driven with the boiler being fired by wood chopped and sawn from the farm bush. In the early days James continued to do contract work on road forming and was the first to open the Green Hill metal quarry at Tatarariki.” He later purchased another piece of land. This was eventually taken over by his eldest son Tom who established a dairy farm. On the death of James in 1933, the home block was taken over by his other sons Hugh and Edward. They farmed together until the death of Hugh in 1967, at which stage his half of the property was sold. “Edward died in 1969 and his half of the original farm, which included the homestead, was taken over by his elder son Graham and his wife Mary, my parents, who continued to dairy farm on it until selling it to Rachel and me in the year 2000. “After the QE2 National Trust was formed around 1980, my parents

covenanted a remnant of native bush, with two other remnants being added later. They are some of the few examples of native lowland bush left remaining in the Pouto Peninsula area. “We have since grown it to 800 acres, which includes re-purchasing the original half of the land which was sold. The family have had the farm for 130 years and we are the fourth generation to care for the property. It is great to celebrate our connection with the land, and New Zealand and Kaipara’s rich heritage of farming history,” said Roger. Because of the increased size of the farm, Roger and Rachel have built a 50 bale rotary shed and milk 850 cows. For the Century programme they collect narratives of family farm history, photographs and documents. The programme aims to capture and preserve rural history with the materials archived with the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington. “The awards are very special and farming families who are a part of them can be very proud of the hard work they have put in over the years to keep the properties in the family. This is not always possible for different reasons and it can be heart breaking for others to have to give up their farms, so to achieve this accomplishment is very celebrated,” said Roger. “Like many families, we have been

Fittingly they moved to what is called a lifestyle block, consisting of 2 acres, which may not sound very big but Mr Ecuyer points out that when you are used to living on a 500m² section — “it’s actually quite a large area.” Since

making the move the family haven’t looked back, saying they love cooking meals made with food sourced from their own backyard. The Ecuyer household grow their own pineapple plants, have their own vege garden and fruit orchard as well as goats from which they make their own feta cheese. “Home grown produce just tastes better and we have always been

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth.

HISTORY by Ayla Miller The Powell family have had a long history in the Kaipara as butchers and descendants still live on in the area approximately 130 years later.

T

he Powell family story began in York, England in 1849 when Richard Allan Powell met and married Emma Morley. From there they left for the goldfields of Australia and sailed to Melbourne on the ‘Landsborough,’ arriving in 1863. Australia wasn’t the utopia they had dreamed of and the next year Richard took up the call for recruitment for the Waikato Military Campaign and moved his wife and four children to Hamilton, New Zealand aboard the ‘Swiftsure’ in 1864. When Richard had finished his three years of service he was granted

land in the Waikato in 1867, however he and Emma then decided to sell this land and move north to the Kaipara. They had 11 offspring born over the course of their marriage, although some did not survive to adulthood. It was here in the Kaipara that Richard, who was trained as a butcher in England, took up his previous vocation and became the manager of Harding’s butchery at Aratapu which was then the biggest town on the Northern Wairoa. He then built his own butcher’s shop near the Prince of Wales billiard saloon and adjacent to the wharf.

Karen Weber, her husband Ralph and their daughter Louise travelled to York to learn more about their ancestors

The butchery business is said to have done well and even expanded into two shops, one located in Dargaville and one at Te Kopuru. In the early days the butchery supplied meat to the sailing ships which lined the Northern Wairoa River banks transporting timber all over the world and the gumfields that dotted the area around the turn of the century. These sailing ships stocked up for their journeys, mostly with corned beef, but usually some live sheep and pigs were brought along so the crew could enjoy fresh meat occasionally during their voyage. The Powell sons and cousins were employed as the deliverers on horseback and the meat was carried in baskets slung on the sides of the horse. A deliverer named Harold Powell is recorded as remembering one lady who took pleasure in making him get off the horse and carry her order up to her door. It is said he once rebelled by leaving the delivery at the gate but his grandfather made him return and complete the delivery. Delivery later progressed to hawking carts with a chopping block attached to the back where the men cut the meat ready to be received by an eager housewife. The butchery was passed down three more generations of Powell men until it was sold in 1969. The Powells crossed paths with the Ropes, to this day a prominent Kaipara family, when Richard and Emma’s daughter, Emma Morley Powell

Great-great-granddaughter of the first Richard and Emma, Karen Weber, visited York with her husband Ralph and daughter Louise and said it was a surreal experience to see places they would have visited and to stand in the street they used to live on. “I definitely

Karen has been piecing together the long family history over 20 years and, after a discussion with other family members, is hoping to hold a family reunion of Powell descendants in 2018. Karen is looking for expressions of interest regarding this reunion. To get in touch email weber.karen@xtra.co.nz.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

To Be or Not to Be! The current model of agro-chemical production is well past its use by date and out of kilter with today’s consumer call for safe, certified, nutritious food produced in a sustainable and ecofriendly way. Agro-chemical production cannot meet today’s new consumer demand, down grading its products to commodity market prices. So, “To Be”, is to seriously look at the consumer request, and to be brave enough to make the shift to better production, better markets, better returns

and a better farming lifestyle working with nature rather than against her. “Not To Be”, I believe is not an option! Farming methods are changing all the time and some of those changes over the past 30 years have favoured the merchants at the farmer’s expense. Looking at that past 30 years we have seen a move towards “synthetic farming” and it is not working. Farming is a natural process with a governed set of natural laws and equations, that if adhered to makes farming a lot more enjoyable and that’s how it should be — the chemical treadmill and its low payout has farmers stressed to the max, paying heavily for rescue remedies that need to be administered on a full time basis. So, what is it going “to be”? “To be” what is it going “to be”! This is your choice. Remember fortune favours the brave. Here at Agrissentials we already have the new model of fertility, based around Mother Nature’s laws and designed to remineralise our deficient top soils, regenerate new top soil and enhance the environment, all for the price of our fertilisers which are in-line with current fertiliser costs, but with all the added benefits of building a multi-mineral,

microbial rich, worm wriggling, water retaining soil, enhancing the farm and the environment. In the mid 1980’s as an agro-chemical commercial grower of produce for the Japanese market, my squash plants failed to grow. This created a major change in my thinking, to a point where I made a move towards using more natural fertilisers and managing chemicals out of my spray program; focusing on supplying more mineral content to the plant, so that it would build its own immune system. What a difference that made, not only to the plants health, but to my health too! There is no denying that our planet is in the midst of an ecological crisis. However, thanks to gravity, all the products needed to repair the system and especially the soils are still here on our planet. Basically, the best top soils on our planet are made up of rock dust deposited on the plains and in the valleys through glacial movement. Here at Agrissentials we have sped that process up. To grow a good healthy plant you need MINERALS — MICROBES — SUNLIGHT — WATER not one or two minerals, but a full spectrum of minerals in a completely natural form — not synthetic Not just one or two microbes, but a full array of microorganisms in mega numbers. This is what we specialise in, multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bringing health and vitality back to soils, plants, animals, humans and the environment. Our fertilisers are live, living fertilisers which encourages worm life, which in turn increases mineral potency on

average of 306% over all minerals taken through the worm’s gizzard and deposited in their castings. (Brookside laboratories research on worm castings). There is a lot of freely available “natural capital” provided by Mother Nature for farming i.e. Topsoil, water, sunlight, micro-organisms, worms, bees, atmospheric minerals, being carbon in the form of C02, oxygen hydrogen and nitrogen all natural and non-polluting, however we are witnessing a lot of destruction of this natural capital through the use of agro-chemical production methods. Agrissentials safe certified system can restore and sustain this pool of free natural capital essential for farming. Agrissentials have been BioGro certified since 1995. The transfer from chemical production to natural production is extremely simple. The only change is replacing the toxic soluble, synthetic minerals, for a full spectrum of Agrissentials natural minerals and Agrissentials ability to restore the essential natural capital that all farmers depend upon. There is only one choice. So, call us today and get underway to natural farming and all the benefits derived from this energised system. Call 0800 THE KEY, that’s 0800 843 539. Alternatively you can contact your best on earth fertiliser representative Mike Jujnovich on 021 669 059 to grab your special deal today. Note: For the first 100 callers prepared to change to a natural certified system, be it BioGro or Asura, we will hold our fertiliser pricing for the duration of the certifying period, which is three years.

Regional Council candidate by Ann Morgan

Aoroa dairy farmer Penny Smart is putting her name forward as a candidate for the Northland Regional Council in the upcoming local body elections in October this year. Ms Smart and her husband Hal Harding own a dairy farm in Aoroa which has now converted from biological to organic. She has experience as a farmers’ representative on the Fonterra Shareholders Council, is chair of the Northland Dairy Development Trust, a trustee on the Kaipara Hospice Trust and is involved in Toastmasters International. She is also a member of the Institute of Directors and the Governance New Zealand group. A highlight for her this year has been participating in the Kellogg’s Rural Leadership programme — her project was on organic dairy conversion. “It feels like a natural step to put my name forward for the NRC. To me the regional council is about making sure that Northland is moving forward sustainably, both environmentally and economically. It’s important to make sure that the core business of council is achieved. Consultation, engagement and collaboration are all important as are implementing practical solutions with a good mix of flexibility and innovation,” says Ms Smart. “I have got a good understanding of the differences between governance, management and representation. I am well practiced in listening first, asking questions and making decisions. Being

a NRC councillor would be about looking at the big picture for the whole region as well as representing the Kaipara Ward.” Ms Smart says being a dairy farmer and a female is a good mix. “Females will often have the soft skills and add diversity on any governance board. Diversity can bring balance to a board, different perspectives, and produce good debate which can result in good decisions being made. “Here in Northland the timing is good to really move ahead both environmentally and economically, especially now that we have some central government attention and resources coming our way. “Compliance will be an ongoing issue and we need to make it a positive for all involved as well as avoid any unnecessary duplication. Within the confines of the Resource Management Act there is room for tailored solutions that meet the needs of both urban and rural communities. “We want to keep people employed in Northland and attract others to the area — we have skill gaps that

need to be filled. There are some great initiatives here and committed people driving them, along with good infrastructure, they have the potential to move Northland into the top tiers of the National Statistics tables. “I am very keen to hear people’s issues and solutions. Northland has a lot going for it and it would be great to be involved in its future.”

BUSINESS PROFILE

On the bright side It was expected that beef prices were to remain high, but in fact they seemed to have caught a second wind. This is how Nathan Penny ASBs Rural Economist puts it. Based on the speed of this increase, we expect prices can rise further from here. Feasibly, prices could lift another 5–10 per cent and thus wouldn’t rule out prices surpassing the record levels set back in spring last year. For now, it seems that the longawaited rebound in US beef production is still in its infancy. Add in Chinese growing demand and it is unlikely that prices are to come off the boil in 2016. Nonetheless, all good things do come to an end, however, on the basis of the above, that seems to be next year’s story. Fonterra played it safe with its opening season milk price forecast of $4.25 per kilogram. The forecast appears to be based on recent dairy prices, with no future price increases built-in. Westland set its price 50 cents higher. This weaker than expected forecast keeps the squeeze on farm cash flows and is likely to lead to a greater production decline over the new season.

Lower production could translate into an extra boost for prices, so in a way, a lower milk price now may result in a higher milk price later. On that brighter note, we continue to expect a milk price of $6 per kilogram by the end of the season. In the real estate world it’s business as usual. We had a busy few days at Mystery Creek Field Days promoting the farming opportunities that Northland can offer, and as a result we are talking to a good number of potential buyers from outside our region. In particular, we have buyers wanting larger scale dairy farms and larger scale drystock farms. As there are currently not so many farms on the market, this demand seems to be holding prices steady (helped by favourable interest rates and strong beef prices) — so now is a good time to be selling. Possums were first introduced to New Zealand in the late 1800s with the intention of beginning an export fur trade. About 200-300 Australian Brushtail Possums were released and the population quickly took off. Now the current estimated population is around 70 million. These furry creatures quickly developed a taste for New Zealand native wildlife as well as being carriers of bovine tuberculosis which is a risk to meat and dairy exports. They can spread it to other wild animals and controlling the population is the only way to limit the spread of the disease. Current control methods include traps, shooting and poison. There are a few ways to tell if you have a problem. Defoliation or dead trees, especially of the northern rata variety are one of the first significant signs. Other signs include fruit trees being raided at night and possum dung around trees with fruits or flowers. Possums are nocturnal and can be quite loud at night, so if you hear them running across the roof, or find TB infected possums during the day, it might be time to put some processes in place to get on top of the problem.

Shelters help animals Shelter and protection from the extremes of weather including the wind, rain and the sun is a primary need for animals and plants and shelter helps them to survive and grow. Dairy feed pads and shelters allow farmers to allocate feed more accurately to each cow resulting in faster growth of yearling animals in the winter. Often dairy production increases of 20 percent are a result of increased pasture growth and cow contentment and efficiency. A large shed where stock can be housed and fed is an ideal building to protect them for the weather changes. In winter and spring these sheds or feed pads allow cows to be removed from pasture for part of each day if necessary. This helps reduce overgrazing and ‘pugging’ of the land which can interrupt grass growth. In summer these shelters help to reduce heat stress in animals. Animals find comfort when they are able to get into a shaded area to escape the heat. There are many designs of practical and stylish farm sheds and shelters available. They can often be multipurpose and can be used for hay, wool or equipment, and housing calves or stock.

A lean-to is also a convenient style shelter to provide shade for animals. Sheep shearing sheds include an area to keep sheep dry overnight before shearing, an open area to sort the fleeces and a storage area for wool bales. Cows were originally handmilked in simple sheds and over time sheds have changed to include running water and concrete floors. Now we have the herringbone or rotary sheds available. Farming practices have changed over the years and the farm building designs have altered to accommodate these changes. Buildings are often available in colour steel or wood and can have additional features such as skylights, bird proofing or canopies, and they can come in kitset form or can be custom-made. Buildings are a significant investment

Sheds for all needs Farm buildings have become a significant investment on any farm across the country, regardless of whether it is a lifestyle block or a horticulture or large livestock venture. Many companies have developed an extensive range of farm shed plans which can often be customised to your requirements. Building companies can also assist with the council consent application to complete the project. Farm sheds can be used in many different situations such as housing calves, storage of farm equipment, or simply as a hay shed. There are endless designs of sheds including open or

closed bays which you can often add divider walls, roller doors or windows to. They are often available in timber or steel materials. Sheds and shelters come in a vast range of sizes to meet specific farming needs. Whether you are after a large hay shed or somewhere to store expensive farm equipment, a shelter for stock, a workshop or a horse stable, sheds can generally be customised to suit

your exact requirements. The options can allow you to mix and match what you require such as an open end and an accommodation room. Most manufacturers are able to meet your needs and the designs you may have in mind. There is also skylight roofing to allow natural light to flow through the roof where most needed. Feed pad covers are an option and can be used as an alternative shelter. These can also be designed to individual needs. They are ideal for anyone needing reliable all-weather shelters and make a great reduction in effluent run-off.

The roof cover diverts rainfall from the feed pad, resulting in less effluent to be managed. It provides shade and shelter for stock, protecting them from cold weather in winter, and reducing heat stress in summer. A covered feed pad allows your herd to be held off the pasture for extended periods, reducing damage from pugging in poor weather and paddock nutrient density compliance issues. There are a wide range of companies who produce farm sheds across the country. Sheds are available in custom made and kitset design.

Outpost Buildings supply an impressive range of rural kitset buildings. Last month the Outpost team went to Mystery Creek Fieldays to show off some of their buildings. If you made it to Fieldays, you might have visited their site and had a look at their display buildings or even entered the ‘Win a hen house’ competition. Outpost kitset buildings are manufactured in Silverdale and then delivered freight free to transport depots nationwide. Their kitset buildings are designed to last, using the highest quality materials including solid H3 treated timber framing and high quality iron with a 10 year guarantee. Outpost’s designs are innovative and multi-purpose with many options available in a range of sizes. Most designs are skid mounted and towable for easy relocation which is great if you want to move your shelters between paddocks or if you ever move properties and want to take them with you. Being relocatable also means that council consent may not be required. Sheds from trees Orang Otang Tree Services offer a variety of tree services, custom built rustic furniture and sheds. Based in Mangawhai, they cover all areas across the Northland and North Auckland region. Regan and Rochelle Davies have owned their sawmill for two years and have been involved in tree work for more than 15 years. “There’s nowhere we won’t go for the right job. We offer all arborist services and we custom make our sheds. They can range in size from 2.3 x 2.3 metres to 3.7 x 2.4 metres or whatever the client needs.” said Rochelle. “Most of our experienced team have been with

us for years, ranging from our qualified arborists, highly skilled grounds men, highly experienced digger operators and we have our own builders. “We believe in using all of our resources and for our sheds we use our own pine and macrocarpa wood which is milled on site at Orang Otang Saw Mill from trees we have cut down. Buildings come with a mono or gable pitch. They are robust and solid.”

The garden sheds can be made with single or double doors. They come with ply flooring and they can be wired, insulated, lined or unlined. “They are not a lightweight kitset, they are solid and built to last. We transport them to sites and put them on a concrete base or skids. They are transportable so if you need it moved it can be. We have also designed a macrocarpa shed with corrugated iron exterior. “People are getting sheds made into mancave with windows and aluminium joinery for that quiet space. We use coloursteel iron for the roofing which is a good quality product.” Orang Otang can quote for and build any ideas farmers may have including calf shelters, chicken coops and cabins. “We can use the farmers own wood if they prefer. We do this a lot when we have removed trees off properties,” said Rochelle. “We are your tree work specialists. We carry out everything to do with arboriculture. Our qualified arborists and chainsaw operators can safely manage any job assigned to them carrying out safe and efficient tree care procedures. We offer services such as hedge trimming, tree pruning through to your larger land clearance and logging jobs, there is nothing we can’t do. We also supply timber sales as well as our furniture. “We are proud to say that nothing goes to waste. We are fully insured and

President breaks tradition Alison Gibb has become the first female president of Jersey New Zealand in its 114 year history. Ms Gibb finished her 25 year career as a maths teacher at Fraser High School in Hamilton in 2008. “In some respects I’ve been there before. In the early 1980s I was the only full-time female maths teacher in a department of 10 plus,” said Ms Gibbs, a partner with her husband Russell in Zenith Jerseys at Taupiri in the Waikato. “As to being the first woman president I believe the membership will be watching with keen interest and, while that brings a challenge in itself, I’m not afraid of it. “The reality is that it is a sign of the times. Farming businesses are predominantly family businesses where husband and wife are in partnership and the women play a huge role in the decision making process. Male or female we have a job to do, gender shouldn’t enter into it.” As president Ms Gibb will help the 1902 founded organisation promote the efficiency of New Zealand Jersey cattle to the national dairy industry. She will also help Jersey cow farmers add value to their herd by promoting Jersey New Zealand resources to them. She is one of two appointed directors on the six-strong Jersey New Zealand board and was asked to fill the role after an appointments committee was set up to find the right person for the job. Her 24 years’ experience in governance of various organisations made her a good choice. She has served on a school board, served as a trustee, then acting chief executive of Arts Waikato, and is a Dairy Women’s Network trustee which she also served as North Waikato convenor. “As a trustee of Dairy Women’s Network I have rubbed shoulders with many successful women and the key message always is that women need to back themselves more, to ‘lean in’ and contribute to the decision making process. Women offer a different dynamic around the board table — it’s not that we are better, we think differently

and hence add diversity of thought in the decision making process.” Ms Gibb said Jersey New Zealand had been through a tough time and needed to develop a sustainable business model through strong governance. “Our members strongly believe in the advantages of the Jersey cow, but we need to promote that message to the wider dairy industry and thus build our organisation. There is a growing demand for Jersey genetics worldwide. Sustainability and efficiency being the key driver.” She said the Jersey cow had a number of advantages, including higher fertility and ease of calving. Its lighter frame means less pugging of pasture. Jersey milk contains more nutrition per litre than any other dairy breed. “The higher fat component of the milk had been seen as a disadvantage when public perception was that fat was bad for you but now that the public have realised that fat provides flavour and is a naturally healthy choice. “The biggest advantage is the Jersey cow’s efficiency in terms of the milk produced per kilogram of feed and live weight, with many Jerseys producing in excess of their own live weight in milk solids.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Cost effective production Just recently we have been asked by a number of farmers what they can do with a limited budget to help get production off to a flying start this season. It brings backs memories of what we did on a farm in the Bay of Plenty 10 years ago. A farmer had bought a farm and paid too much for it, so it was critical we lifted farm production by 30–40 per cent, increasing the value of the property to give him options if he needed to sell. So what did we do? Collected all the farm data we could. Previous production

figures, supplements on hand, which were none, pasture cover and the feed budget at the time. We had an average cover of 1,500kgDM/ha and the desired cover was 2,000kgDM/ha and cow condition 4.5. With very little money available we did a farm pasture budget and this resulted in a trip to the bank manager to raise enough overdraft funds to purchase

urea two tonnes per month for the next four months. The bank manager was happy and allowed the overdraft facility. I remember leaving the bank and thinking ‘well we have the money but what we have just proposed won’t work’. As we walked passed the waste paper bin I threw the urea proposal away much to the dismay of the owner. When asked “why did you do that?” I quickly answered “if you do that you will go broke.” The next question was: “So what the hell are we going to do?” At the time I remember a conversation I had with a South African vet about how minerally deficient New Zealand cows were. So we decided to do some anionic pasture mineral spraying. With American milking and dry cow feeding data from Brookside Laboratories, we formulated a foliar spray programme for the cows. We knew how much calcium, phosphorus magnesium and trace elements a dry cow and lactating cow requires so we started to spray this on in front of the grazing cows. Within two to three days we could see what we were trying to achieve was really working. If we went into a paddock and we were 1000kgDM/ha short of grass we would spray the extra minerals on. For example for calcium we know we

want 800g per 1000kgDM/ha, so we would spray the extra minerals on the grass along with what was missing from the Hill Laboratories pasture mineral analysis. Within 30 days we knew we were onto something. Soon it was time for calving. We adjusted our spray programme for lactating cows and continued on. As a result we ended up putting the cows on three times a day milking, soon after we had the local dairy discussion group there along with three of the local bankers from Te Puke and the dairy board consulting officer. The local farm consultant admitted after the farm walk, “you know you actually might pull this off.” The final result was a 38 per cent increase in production over and above the best this farm had achieved along with a 17 per cent increase in the second year making a total of 55 per cent. This left a 0.75 per cent empty rate and the area average was 13 per cent. We followed up later on in the season with a solid biological fertiliser programme of composted RPR Soil Force/Basalt Rock Dust Bas-50 — but the point here is we had restored our cash flow from a potential disaster which then gave us options. HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

What is the cause? We have had a lot of response to my last article. Most people seem to agree that we do have laminitis, however it appears that the perception is that the main cause of laminitis is related to feeding issues yet there are many other ways for cows to get laminitis. Last month I named stress as a major cause, but you could put other things on that list like mastitis, retained afterbirth, calving etc. When you suddenly get many lame cows and you can’t relate it to an obvious incident, you could think back 6 or 8 weeks and see what had changed in the diet. Things like taking silage out of the diet, running out of grass, starting to feed meal or the like, and these are certainly good possible reasons why your cows are lame. I also mentioned that resting time is a very important contributing factor for lameness. This seems to be overlooked and grossly underestimated as a cause of lameness. I would class it as at least as important as diet. Particularly, in our pasture-based farming systems, it pays to put a lot of thinking into the time budget. You should work on a time allocation of 12–14 hours of resting time, 8 hours of eating time, half hour drinking and 1 hour of socialising per 24 hours. So that leaves you about 2.5 hours per day to walk your cows to the cowshed, milk them and walk them back again. This allows just 1 hour and 15min per milking twice a day. Most cows in NZ don’t get that. The first cows in might but the last ones certainly don’t, so over time the cows become very run down and this is why they don’t want to

walk anymore towards the end of the season. They hang around the cowshed depriving themselves of needed rest which makes them even more run down so they are harder to move again, and so the spiral goes on. Therefore, when cows are being starved of resting time, they are under stress and just to prove a point. Try the following: start depriving yourself of a couple of hours sleep every night — how long are you able to keep that up for before your productivity, your health and your general well-being begins to suffer? It is no different for cows. Cows only sleep for about 20 min per day but they do need a lot of rest. They are very happy with a lot of rest and I have never seen a bored cow. I have no idea what a bored cow looks like. So, when a cow is not laying down she is not resting and this causes lameness — not because the hooves can’t handle the pressure for long periods, there is no evidence for that argument, but because the cow is under stress with lots of stress hormones floating around

through the body. Some of you may think this to be a bit farfetched but science has shown a strong correlation between standing time and lameness. A thought — if you look at any herd that is being milked every 16 hours, you will find that most of those cows are happier to walk again with the change of routine. Why is that? Would cows change their behaviour that dramatically if all their basic needs were already provided for? I don’t have space to further expand on this now, but if you have any comments or questions just send me an email to fred@veehof.co.nz.

Northland leptospirosis increase There have been six cases of leptospirosis notified to the Northland District Health Board so far this year. Leptospirosis is caused by leptospires, which are spiral-shaped bacteria from the family Leptospiraceae and genus Leptospira. These bacteria can be either free living in the environment or found as parasites in animal hosts. They require moist environments for survival. “The health board are concerned about the increase in these notifications from the farming community, which may reflect a greater number of leptospirosis bacteria being present in the environment,” said medical officer of health Dr Virginia McLaughlin. “This may result in further cases in the farming community with the

wide range of symptoms, including: high fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, nausea and/or vomiting, sensitivity to light, jaundice, conjunctivitis, feeling tired, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or a rash. “Animals are the primary hosts, including cattle, sheep, deer, dogs, rats, and possums. They excrete leptospires in their urine. “It enters humans through mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) and skin, especially when there is a cut or scratch. Person to person transmission is rare.” Common ways people are exposed are from the urine or bodily fluids of infected animals, contact with water such as by swimming or hosing down the dairy shed, or assisting with calving/ lambing. For protection use personal protective equipment such as aprons, gloves, don’t smoke or eat in the dairy shed, wash your hands, cover cuts and scratches, avoid contact with animal urine, follow a recommended vaccination programme for your animals, practise rodent control, be careful when handling animal feed such as hay, pellets that may have been contaminated with rodent urine.

corresponding impact on individual, their family and business, and others working in the industry such as veterinarians and meat workers.” There is also potential contamination of waterways by infected animals, providing a route of exposure to wider community members using water for drinking or recreational purposes. “There are reports that some Northland herds are not being vaccinated — not only does this put individual farms, farm workers and families at risk, but also the wider community. Prevention is the best action. We urge all those involved in the farming industry to review this matter and take appropriate measures. “Personal hygiene and protective measures are important. Leptospirosis can be a serious disease. Symptoms range from a mild flu-like illness to severe symptoms requiring hospitalisation. Recovery, in some cases, can take from months to at least a year. “If you have flu-like symptoms see your doctor and say ‘hey, might this be lepto’. Early antibiotic treatment may result in shorter duration of illness and better clinical outcomes.” In humans, leptospirosis can cause a

Six years’ worth of exceptional dairy progeny will remain the legacy of top CRV Ambreed Jersey bull Okura Lika Murmur as he retires this month and leaves his sons to pave the way in the dairy industry. While saddened to say goodbye to Murmur, CRV Ambreed’s breeding programme manager Aaron Parker says he has made an outstanding contribution to the progression of the national dairy herd. “That comes in the form of nearly half a million doses of semen produced, 22,464 daughters herd testing in New Zealand, and a long list of sons that are legends in their own right.” He has also been credited with expanding CRV Ambreed’s exporting market with his genetics particularly popular in South Africa, North America and Australia. “He has bred outstanding sons and daughters with super production, udder and capacity traits,” said Mr Parker. “Hundreds of his cows have been contract mated in New Zealand and as a sire of sons he has produced some of the country’s best Jersey bulls.” This season six Murmur sons were released to market as ‘daughter proven sires’ and are among New Zealand’s highest ranking bulls. These sons include standouts Roma Murmur Kingpin, Kaitaka Murmur Lazarus and Ashvale OLM Highlite. “Kingpin is CRV Ambreed’s highest selling Jersey sire this season. He is an absolute superstar in production because he is Murmur’s son.” Other sons and grandsons are coming through CRV Ambreed’s breeding programme, including up and coming star bull and Kingpin’s son, Puketawa King Connacht JG. “Connacht is an elite young sire that we selected to be part of our Jersey team this year based on his parental information and scientific data. With his daughters coming into milk this season, we expect to see big things from him,” Mr Parker says. Murmur was purchased by CRV Ambreed in 2005 from breeders Luke and Lyna Beehre of the Okura Stud, North of Whangarei.

“The Okura Stud has contributed immensely to New Zealand’s dairy industry over the years by breeding some of the best bulls the industry has ever seen, including Okura Manhatten who was a game changer for the industry. Parker said after Manhatten, Murmur is the next most influential Jersey sire to have been bred in New Zealand. “Manhatten sold more semen and bred

exceptional quality cows, but Murmur has created great sons and will create a greater impact as a sire of sons. “I suspect we will be hearing Murmur’s name in the dairy industry for many years to come. “He proudly sits on CRV Ambreed’s hall of fame and I’m sure we will see plenty of his sons and grandsons join him there in the future.”

Director of NZ Manufacturing Mark Leslie said this ‘winter shut’ period is an important time of year for manufacturing teams as all assets across Fonterra’s network of sites are fine-tuned to ensure they are ready for the season ahead. “Each year we process around 18 billion litres of milk, with the bulk of this carried out in the spring months. The work we are doing now will help us get match-fit for that peak period.” Mr Leslie says the goal for manufacturing teams in this year’s winter shut has been finding more effective and efficient ways to maintain sites for the coming season. “Together, Fonterra and industry are focussed on ensuring we can produce quality product for our customers and support farmers under a constrained milk price. “We have always been efficient in our maintenance projects, so the challenge this year was to come up with new and innovative ways to do things better, faster and smarter.” Hundreds of Fonterra manufacturing site staff are taking part in the annual winter work, with more than 500 projects currently underway around the country, ranging from major capital works to minor overhauls.

Winter Shutdown Manager at Te Rapa, Blair Bond, puts the improvements down to an ongoing ‘owner’s mindset’ across the manufacturing teams. “Every person on our team is on the same page. We treat the assets as if we were their owners — putting ourselves in our farmers’ shoes and thinking about how we can do things more effectively and drop our bottom line.” This work during the winter shut has also led to innovative thinking that will change the way we process milk during the milking season. Preparing for the big chill

DAIRY FARMERS

by Andy Bryenton

The key to delivering better results for our primary industries lies in ensuring that New Zealand products retain their reputation for supreme quality. Despite the vicissitudes of the global dairy market, this means a commitment to an ongoing programme of oversight at the ‘grass roots’ level. That’s the message from the Ministry of Primary Industries, which is committed to the rollout of new guidelines for best practice in cooling milk on farms. With a deadline of full compliance set for June 1 2018, this means an aggressive campaign of upgrades across the sector. Under the Ministry’s New Zealand Code of Practice for the Design and Operation of Farm Dairies, milk must be cooled to a minimum of 10°C within four hours of the start of milking, and to a maximum of 6°C by either six hours from the commencement of milking or two hours from the end of milking, whichever comes soonest. This is not just intended to provide a nationwide standard to promote a healthier, higher quality product to flowon to processing facilities and eventually to the consumer here and overseas. It’s also intended to provide an incentive for farmers to invest in more energyefficient, modern methods of cooling — a cost which can account for up to 30 per cent of the energy expenditure in the dairy shed.

Dairy NZ advise that plate heat exchangers remain the single best means to ensure compliance with the incoming guidelines. Using similar principles to a modern heat pump air conditioner, these arrays of thin metal plates circulate cold water in close proximity to the warm milk, leaching away heat into the water itself. Even with such systems in place, maintenance to ensure peak performance is the key to both rapid cooling and energy efficiency — clean plates and a rapid flow of cool water ensure a fast drop to the 6 degree threshold. The alternative — direct expansion refrigeration of a ‘dimple layer’ inside the bulk milk tank — has the disadvantage of using on-peak power, but regardless of the system used, secondary additions such as ice banks and thermal stores can bolster performance and help meet requirements. Milk processing companies and the ministry acknowledge that achieving the goals outlined in their plan before the

2018 deadline will require a substantial investment, but stress that such an outlay in infrastructure may very well pay for itself in the long term through energy cost savings — as well as enabling the competitive positioning of Kiwi dairy products on the global stage. While the current volatile status of the international dairy market makes this proposition a contentious one for many farmers, the overall message remains that this is a necessary step in safeguarding the entire sector for the future.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Push for purity lifts quality It’s a resource which is evermore in the spotlight and one which forms a vital link in the chain for all kinds of farming. Clean water is essential for growing crops, cultivating orchards and even producing timber. But it’s importance is never more vividly displayed than in the dairy industry, where both the input and output of farms are under keen scrutiny, both by corporate interests, environmental watchdog groups and the public. Significant gains have been made since the revelation just a year ago that many of Fonterra’s affiliated farmers had been given notice by their parent company to improve the quality of water used in their dairy sheds. Since that time, compliant farms have been moved off of what is known as temporary water exclusion, using simple solutions to the issue of water quality. The importance of keeping contaminant bacteria like E coli out of water used in the production of one of our most important consumer products is undeniable, but the programme laid out in guidelines for farmers also checks a list of other potential waterborne issues. Thankfully, for many farms, the addition of something as simple as regularly cleaned holding tanks or a filtration system between the bore and the shed has proven more than enough to ensure water quality.

Get water to areas where it’s never been before

A variety of technologies have been developed to assist with this process, from automated dosing systems, which administer small but effective amounts of chlorine, through to heavy-duty ultraviolet filters and micro-fine cartridges. However, it’s noteworthy that simply removing sediment which has built-up in water holding tanks can provide a massive boost to tested water quality alone. At the other end of the process, the public eye is very much on the downstream effect of dairying. Ever tightening restrictions on effluent handling and disposal, and an initiative to keep waterways clear of livestock have combined to create a demand for infrastructural change in this aspect of the trade as well. This all comes at a time when some sectors of the country are afflicted by a lack of water due to drought, and farmers contend, in some cases, with water export operations for human consumption. Like the incoming 2018 standards for milk chilling, this

emphasis on better water quality both in and out is exerting a financial strain on farms working under reduced payout conditions. But, in a similar fashion, ensuring better dairying water quality is intended to both improve our image, the marketing potential of Kiwi dairy products and, hopefully, the economic prospects of the entire sector in the long term.

in the cow’s gut. This results in better conversion of feed to milk. You do not see weeping walls or effluent management machinery on biologically efficient farms. That’s because the better digestion rates significantly reduce the solid matter in the effluent. Also, the transfer of good biological activity from the soil-grass-gut-effluent means that the pond contains a higher ratio of fibre-eating bacteria. These microbes liquefy the pond. The higher ratio of good soil organisms suppresses the activity of soil pathogens. This causes a drop in animal sickness — mastitis, facial eczema, foot rot, and the need for remedial measures. Higher biological activity creates better soil physiology. This increases drainage which reduces pugging. It also raises the soil temperature which shrinks your winter season length and reduces dry periods because of the extended root systems. That’s what I discovered from 10 years of biological farming. Do other farmers have to go through all that in order to believe in a better science? No. All they need is to see a comparative trial — properly done — where the procedures are transparent, and politics are left out. More on that next time.

The king is back in the building by Andy Bryenton

Racing legend Ken Block loves his Fords — but he has a strange way of showing it. Some collectors pamper their prized possessions, keeping them in glazed-in polished isolation. Not so the twisted genius from Hoonigan Racing, who lets his stable of blue oval racers loose on some of the wildest courses ever imagined, howling around them sideways in a thunderstorm of tyre smoke. Now the man who has created souped-upbeyond-sanity versions of both the Mk 2 Escort, the Fiesta ST and the 1965 Mustang has been asked to weigh in on creating a brand new Ford for all of us. Oh — and they’ve invited the lads at Cosworth to contribute their two cents worth as well. The result could only be planet-smashingly fast, as blindingly blue. Welcome to the 2016 Ford Focus RS. While fans of extreme motorsport will definitely know about Ken Block, younger readers might have missed the days when the word Cosworth was breathed in the same sentence as the true name of God — and quite often featured on speeding tickets. The Sierra Cosworth and the subsequent Escort Cosworth were Ford’s foray into the frayed zone at the edge of automotive sanity, and they quickly became legends with both petrol heads — and the local

constabulary. Racing wins piled up, as did the ink on a screed of rave reviews. The new RS embodies that same spirit of precisely engineered lunacy — even while standing still. Input from Cosworth and Mr Block has given the Focus — which, one must remind oneself, was aggressively polymorphed from a sensible family hatch — no less than 345 horsepower and a snarling 324 foot-pounds of torque, all from a turbocharged four cylinder engine. The party piece of this machine is the way it delivers that power to the ground, through a clever four wheel drive system. Subaru and Mitsubishi may have eclipsed the Cosworth Fords of old with their rally-bred all wheel grip, but this modern Focus RS aims to beat them at their own game, shifting power to the back wheels and judiciously vectoring it forward in greater amounts when necessary. The result is a sense of real speed and accuracy, without the threat of imminent loss of traction. The old Escort Cosworth of yesteryear was locked into a 34/66 per cent front to rear split in terms of all wheel traction, but the new layout pays dividends in the corners, allowing drivers to unleash not just all the blue bullet’s

Blue streak — with input from Ken Block and Cosworth, the new Focus RS was never going to be slow

power, but also its satisfying exhaust note. Getting the tail right out requires a turn of the dial on the central console, selecting the frankly mental ‘drift’ mode. All in all, this has been a vintage year for Ford. GT victory at Le Mans, Mustangs

selling faster than they take off from the line — and now this. A special kind of madness, tempered with world-class Ford engineering, and garnished with the kind of hot sauce only Ken Block and Cosworth could concoct.

Refined ute gains six appeal The Volkswagen Amarok has been a worthy contender in the cut-throat world of Kiwi ute sales — a market with more turns of fortune than medieval television epic Game of Thrones. Seen as the more refined and Euro-inspired alternative to rugged favourites such as Ford’s Ranger and Toyota’s Hilux, the Amarok never suffered from a lack of power. But that hasn’t stopped the lads at the VW design facility in Germany from dialling in a more muscular power plant to complement the ute’s mid-life facelift. And they haven’t gone in by half measures, either. While new versions of existing vehicles often feature a small tweak and fettle under the hood to deliver a

touch more torque or a bit more oomph off the line, the Teutonic engineers — who we must admit share a stable with the octane-drinking masterminds of Audi and Lamborghini — have slotted in a full litre of extra displacement, creating a 3 litre diesel V6 monster. The original was no slouch, delivering over 420 Newton metres of torque from a two litre mill. This new incarnation throws the rulebook in a wood chipper, delivering a stump-pulling 550 Nm, and over 220 horsepower. Taming all this might is left to a beefed-up braking system, sophisticated computer control, and, of course, a far more comfortable driver thanks to improvements in the cabin appointments as well. A special edition — dubbed the Aventura — will come stacked with more automotive bling, including 20 inch mag wheels, bi-xenon headlights and special custom detailing. But it’s the extra hardware under the hood which will really step the Amarok’s game up into the territory where it is a serious contender against the likes of the top-of-the-line Ranger Wildtrak — a prestige ute for the gentleman who likes performance and power tempered with visual head-turning appeal.

Six packed — the new Amarok upgrades adds a powerful new engine choice

John Frear, head of Commercial Vehicles for Volkswagen New Zealand had this to say about the brand’s new flagship ute. “We are hugely excited by the addition of the V6 engine to the already powerful Amarok range. “This will sit nicely alongside the existing 2.0L 420Nm powertrain which will remain a core part of the Amarok

line-up. Now we’ve seen the early images of the facelift Amarok, including significant interior layout updates, I really believe this takes NZ’s most aspirational ute to the next level. We’re sure this offers something new for loyal Volkswagen customers as well as plenty to attract those new to the brand when the first vehicles hit showroom floors at the end of this year.”

The call of the open road by Andy Bryenton

Winter would seem like the last time to consider gearing up to hit the road on two wheels. But Yamaha know all too well that even now, at the cold and dark end of the year, summer is just around the corner. Their latest offerings in the learnerapproved sport bike category may have arrived when there’s a chill in the air, but that just gives prospective riders a chance to appraise their options and make a tough choice between two very capable models which promise to make getting into motorcycling both easier and more attractive. Not so long ago, the rules which governed learner bikes constrained novice riders to 250cc machines or smaller. Initially this may have been intended to curb the amount of power available to those getting to grips with the intricacies and nuances of riding, but an ‘arms race’ at this low end of the displacement curve led to some seriously mad firepower hitting the streets, with high-revving four cylinder 250s like the Suzuki GSX-R and Yamaha’s own Zeal 250 offering a quick way to go from zero to several demerit points, all with the sound of a demonically possessed sewing machine. To put no fine point on it, these bikes were also engineered with more diminutive riders in mind, with that critical riding factor — a nice, low, manageable centre of gravity — neglected in service of the 250cc restriction. Larger riders — read as ‘proper sized’ Kiwi blokes — may actually have been safer on more substantial machines. A fairly recent change to the rules has seen the scope opened up to embrace bigger and more balanced rides — and while the 250cc bracket still encompasses some fine examples, the choices for a learner rider are now better

Brutal looks, refined manners — the new Yamaha MT-03 is learner approved and looks the part

than ever. The new restriction is not so much on displacement as on raw power, which means that it’s possible to saddle up bikes which are both more adept at low-end torque delivery and sized for more than flat-out inner city sprints. A good example is the new doublewhammy from Yamaha, the MT-07LA and its little cousin, the MT-03. With the aggressive, angular look of a seminaked streetfighter bike, the MT-07LA is compact and easy to handle, but packs a class-leading 57.5 Newton-metres of torque from an inline twin 655cc mill, centrally mounted for structural rigidity and a thoroughly predictable centre of gravity in the bends. This is a machine which will easily keep up with your non-learner mates, but which offers extreme safety measures such as ABS equipped twin-pot disc brakes alongside a thrilling riding experience and great fuel economy. The

smaller, 351cc MT-03 sacrifices none of its big sibling’s aggressive looks, and is based on the precision-balanced YZF-R3 racer. Both bikes are a perfect fit for those who have experience on off road bikes or quads, and want to take to the open road next season. Both come with diminutive price tags for the amount of fun and freedom they offer. And best of all, both are proof positive that there’s no need to compromise when buying that first bike and taking the first step into a lifetime of motorcycle riding fun.

Some rules were made to be broken. When John Deere designed the 3036E Compact Utility Tractor, they stretched the boundaries for what a standard tractor could be. They added high-end features like a dual range hydrostatic transmission, a powerful 36Hp engine, 4-Wheel Drive and an ergonomic operator station. When you put all this together you won’t find better value. CE F

RURAL WHEELS

A full house of features by Andy Bryenton

Quad bikes have become a vital working tool on farms all across the globe but never more so than here in New Zealand. We’ve taken to the little terrain-conquering machines in the way that early warrior tribes took to the horse — making it a part of rural culture. But this massive uptake of technology has not been without its challenges. Despite ongoing and substantial advances in safety such as hell descent assists, extra grip and antilock brakes, the rugged terrain in which quads are used coupled with incidences of rider error has led to several tragic accidents, many of which have made the news headlines. A call for extra safety on quads has led to a robust debate about training, the possibility of licensing, and the need to gear up with helmets. But there is another way. Polaris have devoted thousands of man-hours to the question of safety for their off-road fleet. When you produce some of the world’s most powerful snowmobiles, baja buggies, farm vehicles and quads, there’s no question that a large chunk of your research and development has to go toward ensuring the highest level of protection. That’s why the Polaris Ace was created — a

small footprint, powerful quad with controls akin to that of a car, and a full roll cage. The recent National Fieldays has given farmers a chance to get acquainted with the peppy 570 version of the Ace, which boasts more horsepower — 45 in all, from a new ProStar mill — more nimble handling, more grip, and of course an expanded 680 kilo towing capacity, making it the equal of nearly any standard quad on the market. The obvious bonus to the Ace layout is safety — that roll cage is designed to protect the rider no matter what happens, and doubles as a handy anchor point to lash accessories to the machine’s frame. But the steering wheel, racing style seat and pedal layout is also an ergonomic change in itself, providing easier access and a more stable command position for those who find the ‘motorcycle’ riding stance a strain on back injuries or tired muscles.

The Ace 570 HD is built to take the hard knocks, so that riders stay safe

After a long day in the field, the Ace promises far less aches and pains. Add in a low centre of gravity for both engine and driver, optimised through a clever suspension setup, and there’s a big reason the Ace was the talk of the town at Mystery Creek this year. It’s well worth a look if you find a sideby-side UTV too large for really rough terrain, or if it’s time to take a hard look at safety on the farm.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

RURAL WHEELS

Conquering the red desert The Australian outback. A sun-baked wilderness of brutal temperatures, insidious red dust and hidden mineral wealth. Digging this bounty from the earth and, indeed, undertaking any kind of endeavour other than sheer survival here — takes tough machines, and even tougher lubricants to keep them going. The unique challenges of the red desert often proved too much for conventional engine oils made for the more civilised climes of Europe and America.

So, in 1975, a new company was formed to tackle the problem. They were called Anglomoil, and their solution was to blend high quality synthetic additives with base oil in a way which

28 years of continuous development gives you a choice of 9 different models in the Mule range. From 2 to 6 seats, petrol or diesel. Kawasaki’s industrial strength has developed strong, dependable, practical and safe farm utility vehicles.

guaranteed full protection for engine parts, even under the dual hammer blows of searing heat and invasive dust. Sometimes cheaper oils may cite certain operating parameters on the bottle, but struggle to go the distance under demanding conditions. Anglomoil’s product is designed to meet and exceed those parameters, long after the first turn of the ignition. Needless to say, the successful Anglomoil formula was adopted very enthusiastically. Industries from road freight to mining to agriculture and heavy industry saw a massive drop in repair downtime as the new lubricant out-lasted previous choices, protecting moving parts of expensive machinery. Four decades and counting, and the Anglomoil company continues to innovate, creating specialist oils for many niche markets — but their core business is still creating the very best oils for demanding conditions. To prove their point, their products have been tested and used in powerful motorsport challenges, from racing big rig trucks to offshore powerboats and more. But the real testament to their success is from their working customers, who have come to rely on

Anglomoil in their tractors, diggers, trucks and implements. Now Anglomoil has come to New Zealand, facing different environmental challenges with the same kind of attitude which first saw them conquer the red desert. From the heavy acidic peat dust of the Waikato to the black ironsands of the west coast, we have our own insidious particulates. Though we may not have blazing heat, we have extremes of cold and damp which the outback never did. All of these conditions cry out for a superior oil, and Anglomoil have proven their worth to customers such as Gavins Agricultural Contractors on the Hauraki plains. How convinced are they? With 150 pieces of plant machinery, they were spending $150,000 on repairs and maintenance to keep the fleet operating at harvest time. In their own words: “Changing to Anglomoil means we can trust our fleet, we get more work done and a lot quicker, our customers are happier, we meet our deadlines, our operating costs have dropped considerably and we are in a position to take on more work. We are now looking seriously at extending our service intervals for changing parts because of the big reduction in wear and the fact that we now have zero failure.”
