Eric Watson was crowned Federated Farmers /Bayer Arable Farmer of the Year and Karen Williams was awarded Federated Farmers’ Biosecurity Farmer of the Year. “Karen’s achievement is deserved recognition for her leadership and advocacy for farmers in the pea weevil biosecurity response,” says Arable Industry chair Guy Wigley. “Alongside our Wairarapa Provincial president Jamie Falloon, they were both influential components in the development of the response costs package for Wairarapa pea growers and staunch advocates for farmers and growers in the pea weevil response,” Karen spends many hours working alongside farmers and MPI. All of this voluntary, and all to make a bad situation for growers better. “Without Jamie and Karen’s hard work, tenacity and leadership, we believe farmers and growers wouldn’t have got the right outcomes in the response,” Guy said. This inaugural award would hopefully inspire other arable farmers to look at ways and opportunities to improve their on-farm biosecurity and reporting of any unwanted pests, weeds or diseases. Newly crowned Bayer Arable Farmer of the Year, Eric Watson, is a Guinness World Record holder after his feat of producing the highest wheat yield of 16.791 tonnes, eclipsing the previous record of 16.519 tonnes. Mr Watson and his wife Maxine are widely regarded for their innovative thinking and knowledge of overseas

Guy Wigley, Arable Industry chair

technologies which they utilise to improve on-farm productivity. “This is a fitting reward. Eric has contributed to research in the arable industry since the inception of the Foundation for Arable Research. He has hosted trials and other research plots on his farm over the last 20 years, which has translated into productivity lifts for the entire arable sector,” said Mr Guy. “Eric is a quiet and unassuming leader. He lets his farm’s performance do the talking. This award recognises his current achievements and ongoing leadership in our industry. “Success in the arable industry typically flies under the radar compared to other agri-sectors in New Zealand. It is long overdue that we recognise the outstanding contribution arable farmers make to the industry and the country in general.”

New Zealand’s best steak

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

A panel of New Zealand’s top chefs is gearing up to decide on the country’s most tender and tasty steak at the 2017 Beef + Lamb New Zealand Steak of Origin competition, held in association with PGG Wrightson. Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive Sam McIvor says with the likes of Michael Meredith from Meredith’s restaurant and Ben Bayly from restaurant’s Baduzzi and The Grove as judges, the country can rest assured that the decisions made will be the right ones. “This competition celebrates New Zealand’s high performing beef industry — both the people and the product,” says Mr McIvor. Open to all New Zealand beef farmers, retailers, wholesalers and food service suppliers, the 2017 competition awards a Grand Champion along with the top three finalists from each of the eight classes — six farmer classes and two brands. Farmer classes are open to all New Zealand beef farmers and include six classes for the different breeds, European, British Angus, British Hereford, British Other, Crossbreed and Other, and Lifestyle. The brand competition includes two classes — retailers and wholesalers and food service suppliers. The steaks being judged are in the top 20 per cent of all entries as determined by Carne Technologies

based on tenderness, per cent cooking loss in weight, marbling, colour, water binding capacity and pH. The panel of judges will determine which steaks are awarded a class placing and decide on the top entry in each farmer class to progress to the final excluding lifestyle. Chef judge, Ben Bayly is looking forward to sitting on the judging panel alongside some of New Zealand’s best chefs. “Finding the country’s best tasting steak is a job I’m sure any Kiwi would love. I have no doubt that the quality of the Judge Niki Bezzant at last year’s competition steaks we will be tasting will be extremely high, an element that is so The competition is sponsored by important to us chefs,” he says. The chefs’ scores will contribute to PGG Wrightson and supported by 40 per cent of the overall score, with AFFCO Moerewa, Alliance Group Ltd, the tenderness result contributing to 60 Ashburton Meat Processors, Auckland Meat Processors/Wilson Hellaby, per cent. Judging criteria of the cooked Cabernet Foods, CMP Kokiri, Harris steak includes: aroma, taste/flavour, Meats, Land Meat NZ, Oamaru Meats, Progressive Meats, Silver Fern Farms tenderness, juiciness and texture. The winners will be announced at and Taylor Preston. the Steak of Origin Awards Dinner in Auckland on Thursday, July 20.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

From helper to grower BY ANN MORGAN

BY HELPING A GARDENER IN NEED, HARRY VAN DYK WAS INSPIRED TO GROW GARLIC IN THE 1990S AFTER AN ACCIDENT WHICH SAW HIM COLLIDE WITH A CATTLE TRUCK MEANT HE WAS UNABLE TO WORK FOR SOME TIME.

“I

had smashed my face and chest in and lost a few years of memory. I had to learn to walk again, and a year later I contracted meningitis, and was on life support for five days in an induced coma. ” said Harry. “I eventually asked my ACC person to help me find a job with either plants or animals as I just wanted to be happy as life may be shorter than we think.” Harry was given jobs helping at the SPCA, picking cucumbers and working for DOC with kiwi. “One day a lady named Beryl Harris needed help fixing her garlic racks that had collapsed and then I built some steps for her house. As a thank you she gave me a bag of garlic she had grown and told me to grow them.

“She had given lots of people bags of garlic but they didn’t do anything with them.” That was elephant garlic — a large garlic similar to the leek plant and this is how ‘Harry’s Organic Garlic’ came into being. “People said I wouldn’t be able to sell it and a friend suggested I go to the Whangarei Growers Market with my produce, so I did and started selling my bulbs.” Harry discovered there are 650 different types of garlic and there are different shapes and sizes and he started growing smaller varieties as well. “I lease land for my garden and some years, being a small venture, I don’t harvest much as I don’t have irrigation or risk management solutions. I totally

rely on nature and everything is grown naturally without sprays or chemicals. We have at times lost whole crops and had to start again due to droughts or bad weather. “One day a friend offered to smoke some bulbs for me and that is how my smoked garlic started.” Hot smoking shortened the shelf life and as the orders grew Harry changed to cold smoking which extends the shelf life significantly, and he started selling other people’s fruit and vegetables at the markets. “You can only sell so much garlic and combining with others helps offset the costs.” Harry says New Zealand grown garlic is good quality, and although the drought has affected his crop this year and weighs less, the flavour is more intense.

“My crop is grown under weed mat so I don’t have to spray. Holes are punched into the matting a month after the cloves are planted. It takes six months from the end of June with the latest planting window in August.” Elephant garlic is mild in flavour and ready in time for Christmas. “It is big and juicey and people love it. There are approximately 50 types of sulphur in the plant. Once crushed, the inner enzymes mix together and make ‘allicin’ — that is the antibiotic type compound that is good for your health. “I believe you need to chew garlic as long as possible to get the best from it healthwise. When you chop garlic you should leave it for 10-15 minutes before cooking or put it in the fridge overnight — the difference is amazing. I often make marmite and garlic butter toast. “It is easy for the home gardener to grow. Keep a bulb or two in your carport or in a cool airy place for storage. It needs airflow so it can suck the moisture up at night and then dry in the afternoon. “Elephant garlic is the best for keeping all year. New Zealand garlic has a totally different flavour to that from overseas and it is well sought after all over the world. “I have had French people tell me my garlic is better than the garlic they get in France.

HARRY SAYS NEW ZEALAND GARLIC IS FULL OF FLAVOUR AND IT IS EASY FOR ANY GARDENER TO GROW

“It doesn’t ‘seed’ that often so it is easier to plant the cloves. When it flowers, a lot are sterile. They have the little bud on the tip but the seed is little black things in the flower. “I believe it is important to keep the good bulbs so there will be good stock to pass on to future generations. My garlic success is due to many others helping me over the years, and now with my website ‘Harrygarlik.nz’ people can order online and see my other products.”

by Anna Harding Okopako Wilderness Farm in the Hokianga area has been in the King family since Horace King purchased the property circa 1910. Today, Horace’s grandson Nils and his wife Lois King own the farm, with their main venture being in tourism.

H

orace and his family cleared the land and milled timber using a steam powered sawmill up until the early 1950s. From 1920 to 1970 they had a small herd of 20-30 dairy cows which they milked by hand. Nils and Lois bought the 131 hectare family farm from Nils’ uncle Monty in 1981. “My husband and I are from farming backgrounds. I was brought up in a big dairy farming family near Wellsford and my husband is from Whangarei Heads where his father was a dairy farmer,” said Lois. “Nils enjoyed his holidays as a youngster up at Okopako so when the opportunity to purchase it from Uncle Monty came along, we took the plunge.” The first few years were spent tidying up the farm, getting animals

established, planting fruit trees and vegetable gardens and caring for their four children who were aged four to twelve at the time. Nils also worked with the Hokianga County Council up until mid-1985. They bred up Welsh Cob horses as they thought they were a suitable for hilly country, without horse trekking on the agenda. That idea was a suggestion from friends and family. Okopako Pony Trekking was established in 1985. The name comes from one of the many streams that run through the farm, also called Okopako. It translates as ‘the place where you hear the sound of the running water’. However, “more and more people were saying — we’d love to stay here, why don’t you build some accommodation?”

said Lois. So when their youngest daughter Anna finished school and chose to help run the trekking, Nils and Lois took the time to set up Okopako Lodge in 1993. The trekking stopped in 2007 when Anna moved away and Nils and Lois didn’t have the time to run both. Lois says that life on their farm is different everyday, but it mostly starts with looking after guests. Then it’s tending to the garden and animals. “We have Wiltshire sheep, Guernsey cattle and a big organic vegetable garden. We try to produce as much of our own food as we can, and the excess is sold to guests.” They chose the Guernsey cattle breed as they like the properties of the A2 milk and they went with the Wiltshire sheep because they are self shedding, making shearing unnecessary. This winter season, Lois is growing cauliflower, broccoli, kale, silver beet, beetroot, garlic, onions and shallots. “I had a plant nursery and an organic market garden in Te Hana for five years before we shifted up here so we’ve been into organic vegetable growing for years.” To keep it healthy, Lois uses worm farm castings and homemade liquid fertilisers from seaweed, sheep manure and comfrey leaves on the garden. Surrounding the farmhouse and lodge, they have a variety of fruit trees, including a very old grape vine that was planted by the early settlers. Around 90 hectares of the farm is covered in native forest making the large kauri, rimu and

7

tanekaha trees another attraction for their guests. One thing you need to be in the tourism business, says Lois, is flexible, and ready for change. Things such as weather, recessions and cancelled bus services are examples of things that have affected their market. “The one thing that I have learned from being in tourism, is the only sure thing in tourism is that nothing is sure.” The best thing about the business is meeting people from all over the world, said Lois. “I can sit here and potter around in my organic garden and

eco drain

have the world come to me.” They have a huge range of guests, from “young back packers, families, elderly and tramping groups. “We are very family orientated so we have a good mix of all age groups. We’ve been in it long enough now, to have people that came in their early days of backpacking, come back with their partners and children. Those are some of my happiest times. It’s lovely to have recurring customers from the other side of the world.”

The generational tradition of the King’s farm will be continued when Nils and Lois’s daughter Kristina and her husband Kevin move up from Wellington next year to manage the business. Nils and Lois are not moving out or retiring however. They will still be there to help Kristina with the running of the lodge, to farm the sheep and cattle and tend to the garden. “It will be a bit of a change, but we are very happy that someone else in the family can take it on.”

I have been around the world three times and ended up back in Waipu three times,” says Teresa. “For many years I was into horses and competing and was a three-day-event groom in England and Ireland and a show hunter for the last two seasons here in New Zealand. I enjoyed all forms of horse sports but through an injury I was forced to conclude my riding. At the same time I acquired my goats and they

have now filled the void. I am a crazy goat person. “We have had calves and pigs in the past, but the goats are the first critters that Jaden has got involved in with me. “I purchased four Saan/Nubian cross goats last year and then tracked down a buck to take the girls to. That was an adventure in itself and at kidding time our herd grew to 12 over three days with triplets and twins born. It was an eye opener that goats have triplets.” The property has a lot of bush and has been divided into eight paddocks. “The bush is great because goats love a variety of food. They have cleared out a lot of area that had gorse chokage. They actually dislike grass, it is their

least favourite thing to eat. “At present we have two pregnant does and three doelings that I retained last year. After following the NZ goat talk facebook page, I discovered the Toggenburg breed and found a beautiful Toggenburg buck from Hikurangi at the Paparoa A&P show. My girls are now pregnant to a registered pedigree Toggenburg. My ideal is to have six, in-milk goats to be able to move into making my soaps. The couple recently did their first home kill. “Jaden did the dispatching and butchering and I did the skinning and gutting. We were surprised how much meat we got off it and how great it is to eat. Our policy is every animal contributes back to the family table in one way or another. “I discovered I am celiac so now I use goat’s milk. It has really good amino acids and vitamins, is very low in lactose and sugar and is all round better for you. It is easy metabolising and the fat content is easier to digest. “While cows have about 17 per cent fatty acids, goats have about 35, making it more wholesome. 50 per cent of people who are lactose intolerant can digest goat’s milk, especially if it is raw. “It is good for your skin too. The moisturising lotion I have been dabbling in at home is very nourishing and I and am looking forward to the future with my products. “I make comfrey and kawakawa balm, hair and skin moisturisers, goats milk soap and other products. I believe in the holistic side of things and because of my own body issues, I

Each goat has a unique personality

Teresa says goats are smart animals, they have a routine and are therapeutic to be around have had to go more herbal and natural. That is what led me down the path of making my own skincare range. “I sell at the local markets and this ties in well with my goat hobby, and the soap fits in beautifully with that.” Teresa has been hand milking and will be investing in a milking machine this coming season. “We have kids due in September and my goal for next year is to have some still in milk for the off season. “They are certainly smart creatures and my equine husbandry and training certainly falls into keeping the goats. I am with them twice a day, they are great

therapy. At night they are stabled and hard fed. There is a routine and they love to give back when you are patting them, just like a cat or dog. “My two doelings I bred last season are stunning and I am investigating getting a stud prefix through the NZ Dairy Goat Breeders Association. “We have chooks as well and this summer I may have ‘goat yoga’ classes running. “We had ducks but they were a pain so we dispatched them and ate them. Goats are the winner for us — everyone needs to cuddle with a goat.“

Here at Agrissentials, the game plan is increasing as more producers look seriously at moving towards Organx™ production and BioGro certification. Farming is a natural system which over the last 30 years has changed dramatically as corporate science dominates the scene with synthetic soluble products which lead onto health problems and more synthetic solutions via vets and medical centres

— the money is in the problems created by synthetics. After 33 years down the natural track I see a move back to ‘traditional farming’ with Mother Nature and all the ‘free-capital’ she brings to the table, which will release the farms’ production into a certified system of safe, certified, nutritiously dense food, all eco-friendly and fully sustainable enhancing both farm and environment. Each farm will have its own independent auditor to help them through to full certification, within a three year period, with an estimated annual audit cost of around $1,800.00 (eighteen hundred dollars). Making the move away from ‘agrochemical’ production and back to ‘traditional farming’ will encourage you and your family to feel strong about operating a ‘certified’ farming system. It’s not complicated, it’s all about getting your soil right and Agrissentials can take you there. Agrissentials have the key to regenerate new topsoil through our

multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, bringing health and vitality back to soils. Over the past 33 years I have committed my working life to improving the health and vitality of soils. I need to take this opportunity forward. I need to build a soil driven culture surrounded by integrity, determination, innovation, persistence and responsibility. The challenge is to bring the soil back to life. To manage the soil by attaching the farmer’s personal meaning of soil to a higher purpose — for the farmer to become a steward of this ‘soil-culture’, to lift the game, to make him the best farmer in the world. Top soil is sacred, the more we care and look after it, the more wealth it will return to us. For the past 60 odd years we have been bombarding our soils with synthetic nitrates, phosphates and a plethora of synthetic toxic chemicals. The chemical age has been detrimental to all life upon the planet and also in the sea, rivers, lakes and streams. The situation is reversible, but we need to work on it now. In late 2015, the Australian Grain Board, a government department made a statement that they were leaving the ‘chemical age’ in an endeavour to increase falling production and to increase the quality of the grain. From my perspective, having worked on both sides of the fence I learnt early

that chemicals don’t work and in reality create their own market. A major chemical producer has admitted that they have run out of chemicals to fight pest and disease. This shows just how strong Mother Nature is, with pest and disease becoming immune to toxic chemical sprays. Agrissentials are producing a BioGro certified natural sea based product ET250, to repel pests, disease and other bugs. There is no point in trying to eradicate pest and disease, as they are part of Mother Nature’s system. ET250 is designed to chase those problems out of the orchard and it’s working. Better than that, if you are using a multi-mineral fertiliser like RokSolid or Oceans 100, packed with minerals, the plant will fix its own immunity to pests, disease and bugs. The ‘chemical-cowboys’ have made a fortune from their toxic chemicals without any thought about the ramifications of their products on plants, animals, birds, bees, rivers, soils, food and ultimately humans. This is the real problem. Call us today on 0800 THE KEY for a FREE INFO PACK, that’s 0800 843 539 to find out how we can partner with you to find a better way of farming. CARBON LOCKUP

Planting forests is a simple and effective way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, while at the same time creating a financial investment for the future. Trees take surplus carbon out of the atmosphere and turn it in to wood. Just one 20 year old Pinus radiata tree will lock up all the carbon a single sheep will have emitted in its entire lifetime. One tree would also lock up all the carbon emitted by one beef animal in one year and 1.5 trees will capture a dairy cow’s emissions in one year. New Zealand foresters plant more than 50 million trees a year.

Shelter on your farm

People, plants and animals need shelter from the different weather patterns across New Zealand. Various sheds, buildings and shelter belts protect stock, pasture, crops, orchards and gardens from wind, heat, cold and rain. Forms of shelter also include native bush, dairy or drystock sheds, artificial windbreaks and feed pads. Farm animals in New Zealand can be grazed outside all year-round but they still need shelter. New-born calves and lambs as well as recently shorn sheep are the most vulnerable to hypothermia. Providing protection for flocks reduces abortions and lamb losses from hypothermia and helps reduce stress on heavily pregnant animals. Ewes prefer to lamb in isolation from the flock and will seek out shelter. Cattle appreciate being able to escape from the sun, wind and rain and this can improve milk production and conception rates in dairy cows, and the growth rate in fattening cattle. Dairy shelters house and feed stock and are used in winter and spring to keep cows off the pasture for all day or part of the day. In summer these buildings are ideal to stop the animals getting too hot. The benefits of sheltering animals include needing less feed to maintain physical condition and their winter growth rates improve. Implementing the correct type of structure on your farm is essential for helping your stock to not only survive, but thrive. Shelter from warmer weather can increase milk production and

Contract saw-milling Selling Macrocarpa, Japanese Cedar timber & kitset Macrocarpa Raised bed gardens

improve conception rates in dairy cows, as well as the fattening growth rate in beef cattle. Feed pads enable stock to be housed and fed under cover, removing animals from pasture for a few hours each day. This helps to reduce overgrazing and trampling of soil and pasture which can slow down grass growth. In summer, feed pads help to reduce heat stress as mentioned above. Feed pads allow a more accurate allocation of feed to stock, resulting in faster growth of yearlings. For farm equipment, it is advisable to have lockable sheds to protect machinery and equipment from weather damage and those would be thieves that enter a property to steal farm machinery, motorbikes, petrol and other goods stored on farms. Having such items out of sight can help deter thieves.

Buildings are a valuable investment on any property, regardless of whether it is a lifestyle block, large livestock or horticultural operation.

Bobby calf loading facilities It is time to review loading facilities and take a look at the new regulations coming into force from August 1, 2017. Calves being transported for sale or slaughter must be able to walk safely onto and off the truck. This will require many farmers to make alterations to existing loading facilities. DairyNZ suggest farmers talk to their transporter before making changes to help ensure facilities are fit-for-purpose. Road Transport Association New Zealand upper North Island area executive Keith McGuire says building a new structure is a long-term investment so it’s important to get it right from the beginning. “Whenever calves leave the farm on a truck, working with your transporter to make their job as easy as possible

Ideal solution for calf rearing, give us a call today!

creates a better outcome for both animals and people. “Transporters can provide a different perspective about what works well and what’s practical for the truck and for loading. Some farmers have built ramps or structures and realised there were things they could have done differently to make it more practical. Talk to your transporter and make a plan before you start,” says Keith. When calves can walk on easily the driver can see if they are in good condition or if they have any abnormalities. Two years ago sharemilkers Blake and Sara Korteweg built a new loading ramp and took the opportunity to make Purchase a Baby Barn before 31st August and go into the draw to win a 1.6m x 1.2m Mini barn valued at $1200!

• Central Landscape Supplies Warkworth • Kaipara Coast Plant Centre, 1481 Kaipara Coast Highway (SH16), Kaukapakapa

it calf friendly. Blake says at the time they didn’t know the new regulations were coming in but the set-up has made life easier for everyone. “The transporters are grateful because it’s under cover. We have four pens and the bobby pen is raised. The truck driver walks through a footbath, climbs the ladder and opens the doors to let the calves walk into the truck. “We trialled the new DairyNZ bobby calf collection sign. We used it every day to tick off the checklist and display how many calves were out for collection. If any calves are not picked up, the driver could write the reason on the whiteboard. It’s been very useful.” Guidelines include ensuring the pen

is accessible for the truck and trailer to reverse up to, and it should be free draining and constructed with a level hard-standing surface. The track should be no less than 4m wide with a height clearance of 4.3m for any overhead obstructions such as trees, water lines and electric fence wires, and 6m for power lines. Loading calves directly under power lines should be avoided. Ensure that all bridges/culverts are safe, fit for purpose and that truck weight loadings are within the structure’s design loading specifications. Guidelines for calf holding and loading facilities meeting the new regulations are available at dairynz.co.nz/loading-facilities.

Wise housing choices If you have decided to build housing facilities for cows, or other animals, it is important to ensure the design is suitable to their needs. Badly designed, overstocked or poorly managed systems can lead to a decline in the comfort, health and welfare of stock and this can affect production. Cows need to be healthy, active and comfortable to achieve optimum production so it is important to only build if you can afford to do it properly, rather than have sub standard facilities that are detrimental to what you are trying to achieve. Cows are social animals and enjoy grooming themselves. Fitting cow brushes in the area being built is beneficial as grooming is an important factor for cows. Grooming provides benefits for their health and wellbeing, and is also a social activity and part of their hierarchical behaviour. They need to be able to lie down and rest comfortably for sufficient periods each day. The Animal Welfare Act 1999 places the onus on owners, and people in charge of animals, to ensure that they meet their physical, health and behavioural needs. These needs include proper and sufficient food and water, adequate

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

shelter, opportunity to display normal patterns of behaviour, physical handling that avoids unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress, avoidance or treatment of injury and disease. All fittings and internal surfaces, including entry races and adjoining yards that may be used by the housed animals, must be constructed and maintained ensuring there are no hazards likely to cause injury to the animals. It is important that all sharp objects, protrusions and edges, including damaged flooring which can cause injury to animals must be covered, removed, or repaired. Cows need to move freely from area to area, turn around, and back in and out of stalls without injury or hindrance. They must be given the correct space and the environment must enable them to pass each other, socialise and groom. The feed and trough space must be at the right height and the animals need to be able to walk confidently on non-slip reasonably clean flooring. It is also important to have good quality air supplied through an effective ventilation

system. They also need uniform distribution of light to make best use of lying areas and cow traffic. Good lighting also makes it easier for staff to observe heat detection or health problems and

they require shade to reduce the impact of heat stress. All aspects of cow comfort should be achieved to provide an environment for optimum welfare, health and production.

FOR RURAL WOMAN

17

Woman president after 118 years Becoming the first woman in the Federation’s 118-year history to hold the presidency, West Coast dairy farmer Katie Milne is the new Federated Farmers’ National president. A previous Federation Board member and West Coast Provincial president, Katie was Dairy Woman of the Year and a Rural Woman of Influence in 2015. The 47-year-old is a fifth generation West Coaster and succeeds Dr William Rolleston who steps aside after his three-year tenure. Reconnecting urban and rural New Zealanders is important to Katie. She believes the communication skills she gained whilst attending a governance and leadership course will be a major asset. One of her strengths is the way she can connect with people, She is able to articulate in a clear way to people who don’t necessarily know anything about farming in a way they can actually ‘get it’. “As a hands-on dairy farmer, I found myself explaining aspects of farming and why farmers do what they do to my course colleagues, prompting them to ask why I wasn’t speaking on behalf of the sector,” says Katie. “That got me thinking and understanding that we need to be telling our stories and other farmers began

asking me to think about taking this a bit further and stand for the presidency. It made me start to think ‘why not’.” “I have had women from all walks of life coming to me and saying sincerely that this is great for women.” She believes the split between urban and rural is the root of many accusations levelled at farmers over water quality and environmental issues, as well as deterring people from pursuing careers in agriculture. “New Zealand needs to remember that farmers produce great food, which is important economically and to the sustainability of local communities.” She believes her ability to speak in simple terms will be an asset to help urban New Zealand to get an understanding that farming is about producing great food and feeding families. Katie says her election success is an extension of what is already happening on farms, particularly given that women are already involved in all areas of farming life including management, and ownership. “A great aspect of farming is that we don’t think about gender.

Katie Milne, Federated Farmers’ National president

We get out and do what we have got to do,” she says. She and her partner Ian Whitmore own a dairy farm near Lake Brunner and run 200 Jersey cows. They

also run a small contracting business. Katie says her passion for the industry and getting a fair deal for farmers is her main motivation.

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

This can’t be answered until we know, what kind of animals, what are you expecting from them and what they are currently eating. Of course if their condition raises animal welfare concerns then the answer is NO. WHEN SHOULD I SCAN FOR PREGNANCY? Some years ago at a farmers meeting on mating in Kaiwaka a prominent Waikato vet was asked this question, “it depends on what you are looking for..”, he replied, “Well” said the farmer “I am looking for a bloody calf!”

Yes - for both Auckland and Kaipara Council you will need a Permit – we can take care of all of this for you, right through to the Code of Compliance Certificate once the fireplace is installed.

DO YOU HAVE TO SHIELD THE WALL? Most fires can be 7.5 cm-15 cm from a regular gib wall surface.

WHAT SIZE FIREPLACE DO I NEED? 1 kw of heat output of the fire equates to 10m2 of house area, so a 15Kw fireplace = 150 sqm house.

WHAT SORT OF WOOD SHOULD I BURN? Most types of wood are suitable, as long as it’s been dried properly. Remember NO green waste, painted or treated wood or household rubbish can be burned.

What should I look for in a tyre? You should look for a tyre which best suits your driving requirements. Tyres are manufactured for almost every requirement; wet or dry traction, high mileage, high speed control, steering response, ride comfort etc. A tyre professional will be able to advise you of product features. There are so many brands and models to choose from. How do I know which one is best for me? Discussing your needs with a tyre professional will help establish a tyre product that best suits your requirements and your budget. A professional tyre person will ask questions regarding your expectations of the product, the type of driving you do, how long you expect to keep your vehicle etc. A salesperson who just asks you what size you want is not ensuring you receive the most suitable tyre value. How can I tell when it is time to replace my old tyres? Most automobile tyres have a built-in tread wear indicator in the tread area of the tyre. This wear indicator will show when there are 3mm remaining on the tread. Depending on your driving habits or conditions you should replace the tyre no later than when the wear indicator is visible. Consult a tyre professional when tyres show signs of wear. The wear on my tyres look strange. What causes this? Wear problems could have a variety of causes. The problem could be caused by over or under inflation of the tyre, mechanical problems or the need for an alignment (caster, camber or toe).

One Source for Beekeepers Is beekeeping for me? Bees are more work than a goldfish, but less than a dog. The summer months are the busiest time for a beekeeper and for the bees, focusing on hive health, hive management and collection of stores for honey. The winter is a quiet time for the bees; an opportunity for them to have a rest from being busy bees.

How much honey will I get? You can expect approximately 35-55kg of honey from one hive with 2x honey boxes/supers.

When to start? Spring is the best time to collect your bees and start a hive. You can either buy them online or catch your own swarm of bees – exciting! The bees are growing in strength and building up their colony in preparation for the honey flow.

How long do bees live? During the summer, worker bees have a life span of 15-38 days. In the Autumn months they have a longer life span of 30-60 days. The Queen bee can live for 3-5 years.

For all your pool & spa requirements... WHY NOT GO FOR THE CHEAPER OPTION OF A CULVERT?

TM

Culverts do not protect the landscape. Our bridges are environmentally friendly — Our bridges do not disturb the stream bed or alter the flow — unlike culverts. WHY IS MY SPA WATER CLOUDY? Has your spa had a lot of use recently? The spa may need a shock dose of sanitiser to oxsidise the water. Also have you checked your filter? Your spa filter should be rinsed weekly and soaked monthly in a filter cleaning solution. This will remove the body fats & oils that build up and prolong the life of your filter. Ideally have a second filter that you can swap over. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE THE WATER IN MY SPA? As a general rule you should change the water every 8–12 weeks depending on use. WHY SHOULD I TEST AND BALANCE THE WATER IN MY SPA? Unbalanced water can be uncomfortable on the skin and make your sanitiser less effective. It can also cause corrosion, staining and etching of your spa and lead to scale formation on equipment and spa surfaces. We offer free computerised water testing for our customers And we offer great free coffee! with an easy step by step guide for chemical additions.

Lifestyle Block Services Biosecurity is a responsibility Lifestyle block living can throw up major concerns the urban dweller may not have considered when the move is made to the land. Good biosecurity helps to keep animals free from pests and diseases as well as helping to boost productivity. The Department of Primary Industry has prepared comprehensive advice about the biosecurity measures required from lifestyle block holders. Every farmer, on whatever sized property is at risk when it comes to pests and diseases, with animal contact the main risk to stock. Diseases can also be transferred indirectly on clothing, vehicles and equipment. When buying stock try to minimise the movement of animals in and out of herds or flocks and try to source from a single farm with a sound herd or flock health programme. Get an Animal Status Declaration from the seller and a health certificate from a vet and always quarantine new stock for at least two weeks. Animals need this period for a proper health assessment and to recover from transport stress or illness while also being monitored for diseases. Inspect boundary fences regularly and repair as needed as stray stock

may spread disease and wild or feral animals can introduce new pests to your property. Be aware that sharing bulls or rams of unknown health status (and similar practices) can easily transmit disease. Simple hygiene is also important even on just a few acres, and good advice is to deter pests, rodents and birdlife by keeping the area free of debris, spilled feed and standing water. Keep grass short around pens and animal or poultry enclosures The place to go in most instances of doubt about animals and other farm stock is the local vet. Test existing stock and newly purchased animals for diseases as recommended, and follow a health plan devised with the vet’s specialist knowledge. Regularly observe your animals for any abnormal behaviour and signs or symptoms of disease. Call a vet to examine dead animals as soon as possible if the cause is unknown. Dispose of carcasses quickly and appropriately to prevent contamination of the farm environment or risk to other

MARC HACKETT CONTRACTING LTD

livestock or people. Restrict movement on and off your block if disease is suspected or identified. Don’t spread disease to other properties you visit. Don’t become the source of a disease outbreak, and immediately contact the MPI exotic pest and disease hotline 0800 80 99 66 if you suspect an exotic disease.

ADVERTORIAL

Giving back to nature Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning! And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet! It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us. Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience. But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced in the USA specifically for

boats. They called it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been accepted world wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes. Off-grid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural separation of liquid and solid waste and each is treated separately. Both elements benefit the environment when applied correctly as many tiny home and off-grid cabin dwellers are learning. Naturally.

DAIRY & COMPLIANCE

Utilise technology for compliance With the dairy industry under the compliance spotlight, the planning phase of a new dairying operation is all important, as a step to making things easier and at the same time more efficient. This setting-up period provides an opportunity to include the latest technology and systems into the farm business. This use on-farm is rapidly evolving and there is a range of options outlined by DairyNZ for what might work best in a particular farming objective. Precision agriculture can offer significant farm efficiencies, and opportunity for management, reporting and ultimately improvement. Virtually

every farm key performance indicator (KPI) that can be measured, can now be monitored through an electronic (Internet cloud based) system, which can be accessed from any web-enabled device. This is particularly beneficial for large farms, and off-farm management. Soil profile mapping is a prerequisite for precision agriculture. Electromagnetic sensors with GPS data loggers are able to provide rapid soil

variability maps. Mapping soil variability allows the farm to be broken up into management zones for soil fertility, grazing management, water holding capacity and importantly freshwater and effluent irrigation management. When used in conjunction with telemetered soil moisture and temperature monitoring equipment; soil profile maps can be used to predict soil water holding capacity, and allow for fine tuning of water and effluent irrigation and fertiliser application. Soils can be categorised as ‘high’ and ‘low’ risk for effluent application. This is a benefit for conserving freshwater use, minimising any run-off and losses below the root zone, preventing nutrient loss, and avoiding compliance issues. Additionally, farm managers can gain confidence with grazing management in wet conditions, preventing pugging and soil damage. Some farm management software can incorporate GPS maps, which can be

used for farm design, to help plan and place farm infrastructure and amenities (buildings, tracks, power, fences and waterlines etc.). Utilising this technology can make achieving compliance with councils, dairy and irrigation scheme requirements easier. Examples include GPS mapping farm waterways, wet spots and other sensitive areas, and creating buffer and exclusion zones, as well as high and low risk soils for effluent application. GPS mapping sensitive features and classifying risk zones while planning the overall farm design, will assist in selecting suitable effluent and water application areas. Using precision agriculture and cloud-based management software to record and manage soil fertility, effluent placement and soil moisture for grazing management, offers potential productivity, financial and environmental benefits. It is also useful for off-farm monitoring and management.

Effluent handling is the key factor There is little doubt that effluent is the major headache in the dairying compliance states and the Regional Water and Soil Plan for Northland outlines some options for land application systems suited to the region, under the auspices of the regional council. The plan details the transition from discharge to land management effluent systems that has wide benefits to the farm’s bottom line. Among these are a reduction in fertiliser bills by controlling when and where to irrigate valuable nutrients. Good management of effluent can help to protect the environment now and in the future. ‘The variances throughout the region, including extreme weather events and challenging topography, means that each farming system is unique,’ the plan states. ‘Land is one of farmer’s greatest assets, and managing it productively and sustainably will add further value to the farm. It’s part of future-proofing New Zealand’s unique landscape and waterways to ensure we can continue to farm in a productive and sustainable way. The Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord outlines good management practices. It positions the sector to cope with a future that will focus on managing water within limits, recognising that expectations of performance will evolve over time. Most Northland dairy farmers take pride in keeping their waterways healthy and want to protect this valuable resource. Effluent is a major contaminant, which can cause

Investment by Northland farmers is improving the status of our waterways. When planning a land application system, it is important to understand the factors that influence the type of system that is best suited to a particular farm and an understanding of soil types is vital to ensure sufficient storage is available. Storage facility volumes can be estimated using two storage calculators, the Northland Regional Council Effluent Storage Calculator or the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator; both are accepted, but it is important

to have an understanding of council expectations when using the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator. The easiest way to estimate water use at the dairy shed is to install a water meter, now a requirement under the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord. The type of irrigators suited to Northland vary. Dairy effluent, is a valuable resource that can increase pasture production and reduce fertiliser costs. It contains organic matter, nutrients including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and also bacteria (such as faecal coliforms, E. coli and campylobacter).

Dairy product prices eased Fonterra’s Global DairyTrade auction saw dairy product prices ease again, posting two straight declines for the first time since March, as prices slid for most products except whole milk powder and butter milk powder. The GDT price index fell 0.4 per cent from the previous auction and the average prices to $US 3,303 ($NZ 4,526) per tonne. Some 28,574 tonnes of product was sold, up from 21,171 tonnes at the previous auction but whole milk powder gained, rising 2.6 per cent to $US 3,111 a tonne.

“Prices for nearer-dated contracts lifted more than prices for later-dated ones, suggesting some buyers need whole milk powder more urgently than others,” said AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby. At the latest GDT auction, skim milk powder fell 4.5 per cent to $US 2,090 a

tonne, while anhydrous milk fat declined 3.5 per cent to $US 6,596 a tonne. Lactose retreated 3.3 per cent to $US 839 a tonne, while cheddar gave up 3.2 per cent to $US 4,051. Rennet casein eased 2.7 per cent to $US 6,133 a tonne, while butter slipped 0.1 per cent to $US 5,775. Ms Kilsby said there has been concern that buyers would no longer be able to absorb the record prices that butter and anhydrous milk fat have been hitting, though it is too early to tell whether this is the start

of a longer-term downward trend. “Butter prices are still more than double what they were this time last year and anhydrous milk fat prices are 80 per cent higher. The large stocks of skim milk powder available from Europe continue to overhang the market,” she said. Bucking the trend, butter milk powder jumped 10.8 per cent to $US 2,264. There were 127 winning bidders out of 165 participating at the 19-round auction. The number of qualified bidders rose to 523, up from 522 at the previous auction.

Solving corrosion issues Kevin Waterman at Northern Dairy Specialists has spent the last 25 years installing milking machines and serving the dairy industry. “Dairy sheds are wet corrosive environments and I have found a lot of problems with different parts rusting and seizing, also electrical parts and circuit boards getting moisture causing early life failure,” says Kevin. “That is where CorrosionX came to my rescue. I now spray every electrical fitting, circuit boards, and the electrics box on my water pumps with CorrosionX. I have not had any failure due to moisture since, in fact, I liked the product so much I became an agent for the product and sell it out of our mobile truck.” Northern Dairy Specialists covers an area from Kawakawa to the Cape. “Our mobile truck calls visits dairy farms supplying products farmers need for their dairy sheds. “Corrosion X has become very popular with our customers as they see the benefits of what it does. The company has numerous products from grease and lubricants to car cleaners and degreasers. I personally use every one of these products and highly recommend them.” Old oil and diesel make for good rust protection but the mixture eats rubber bushes, dissolves neoprene seals and can kill electronics within minutes.

CorrosionX gives lasting coatings, tested by Dulux and approved by the Ministry of Primary Industries and waterproofs expensive electronics. You can weld over it because CorrosionX simply cannot be ignited. You can apply it over wet machines and it will keep them reliable. With a no-limit shelf life and a lubrication value of 0.4, it is a better lubricant than PTFE, engine oil, lanolin or grease.

All CorrosionX products feature core technologies we call ‘Polar Bonding’ and ‘Fluid Thin Film Coating’. These technologies are the heart of why CorrosionX works better and longer than comparable products without having to resort to the high solvent and high volatile organic content (VOC) components common such products and that have been found to be detrimental to the environment.

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Animal health problems Last year, a farmer asked me if I would help his mate up the road. His friend had started with 500 cows to calve, and with peak milking soon to begin, he now had a little over 460 with which to complete the season. Twenty-two cows had died from metabolic problems, 63

had clinical milk fever, and some had aborted. He was losing milking profit and spending more on medical bills. Before I talk about the cause of his problem, I’d like to talk about the farmer’s profit window. September to December is the period where milk production is at its maximum. It’s when most of the money is made. Because of this, farmers should be gearing up to take maximum advantage of it. Ideally, in that profit window, a farmer wants each of his cows to be producing 2.2kgms/day from September to December. But getting an animal to hit the magical 2.2kgms/day depends entirely on the condition they arrive in at the time of milking. That means preparing cows to be in peak health at the start — so that they can maintain good condition throughout the calving, milking and mating periods. Preconditioning is the transitioning period of four weeks prior to calving. The goal is to bring animals up to a 5.0 level of conditioning and this is achieved through a careful combination of diet, trace elements, and supplements. Will a farmer need to spend money to get animals up to a 5.0 condition? Yes, but spending here will be rewarded in two

ways: 1. with increased milk production 2. with reduced health problems and naturally better mating results. Think of preconditioning as an investment: you spend money to make more money. If a cow comes into calving with an average to low condition level, she will calve in a tired state. This state will drop further as she expends energy and resources to cope with calving. In her tired state, she may have difficulty pushing out her calf due to low muscle strength. With her immunity levels compromised, she is more susceptible to metabolic sickness. But even if the cow avoids illness, her reduced conditioning means she has less energy to give to milk production. The farmer may even have to milk her less to avoid making her weaker. In the case of my farmer, that scenario was true of all 500 cows. None had a hope of reaching 2.2kgms/ day. If a cow comes into calving with an elevated level of conditioning (5.0), she will be able to calve with relative ease. With strong muscles and high energy levels, she can push out the calf without compromising her own health. That means she can immediately produce 2.2kgms/day straight after calving. Being healthy, the cow also

possesses a strong appetite. Her desire to continually feed enables her to maintain good conditioning throughout the Profit Window and beyond and is far less susceptible to sickness. What was the problem with our farmer? When the Forward Farming team was called in to help, we went through the key areas, looking for causes for the herd’s poor health. The management plan was sound. The feed balance was good. The problem was in the feed quality, or more precisely, the soil from where the feed came. Our soil test revealed several key problems that accounted for the poor animal health: nitrogen levels were far too high. One effect would have been the suppression of calcium in the soil which had left magnesium too high and out of balance with calcium. Sodium was also too high in relation to potassium. If I had seen these soil readings without first knowing the herd’s condition, I would have deduced that their health was compromised. This soil/feed nutritional imbalance was only ever going to hurt these cows! If you feel you are interested in unlocking more of your farm’s potential and maybe an answer to your frustrations and questions we can help with the big picture.

Improving farm performance The first group of Northland farmers have started working with mentor farmers to raise their on-farm productivity, sustainability and profit as part of the Extension 350 initiative. Extension 350, an initiative funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries, Northland Regional Council, DairyNZ and Beef+Lamb New Zealand, is an innovative farmer led and farmer focussed mentoring and extension programme. It aims to work with 350 Northland farms within five years to improve their on-farm performance and environmental sustainability. Two dairy clusters and one sheep and beef cluster consisting of five farmers each, have been set up. Each cluster runs for three years. Four more clusters are planned for 2018, with another three in 2019. “Extension 350 will influence local pastoral farmers to perform better and any improvement in profitability has the scale to make a significant economic impact in the Northland community,” says Ben Dalton, head of the Regional Growth Programme at MPI. “Research shows farmers accept advice much more readily from successful farmers and Extension 350 builds on previous similar initiatives aimed at farm transformation. “Being profitable allows farmers the flexibility to make decisions that support longer term goals for onfarm improvements, debt repayment, managing succession, and improving their livelihood.” Ken Hames, Extension 350 Steering Group chairperson said pastoral farming was a billion dollar industry in Northland. “The region has approximately 2,000 pastoral farmers, however studies and industry benchmarking has shown there’s room for Northland’s pastoral sector to improve based on the levels

Ken Hames, Extension 350 Steering Group chairperson

of resources and the high numbers employed in the sector there.” Extension 350 is part of the government’s Regional Growth Programme. The programme is co-led by the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and aims to increase jobs, income and investment in regional New Zealand.

Therapy for osteoarthritis Part 2 Nutritional therapy can be effective in helping osteoarthritis. For example I have been helping someone with osteoarthritis (OA) in one knee which affected her mobility. She also had hypertension and swollen ankles from poor lower leg circulation. We used a combination of therapies to target all the problems. We added my joint supplement at a double dose delivering 1500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate with the same of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a proprietary 95% curcumin extract (from turmeric). To this we added 6000mg of Omega 3 fish oil and a bullet blender recipe I have developed to assist circulation to help her swollen ankles. This included raw beetroot to dilate blood vessels. The result is that after three months the pain has reduced by about 50% and her ankles are less swollen. I expect these improvements to continue. High levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) are important as it is a major constituent of cartilage. At therapeutic levels this can help with cartilage function and has antiinflammatory activity.

What is Bettaflex? • Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

Studies, including J P Pelletier (Arthritis Research and Therapy, 2016) demonstrate that chondroitin sulphate at high levels has the ability to modify joints affected by osteoarthritis. In particular there was a marked reduction in further cartilage loss with overall joint improvement. There are several ways CS can improve arthritic joints. Firstly it seems to inhibit a number of inflammatory compounds that are associated with OA. The second is previously mentioned reductions in cartilage loss. The third is even more promising. According to research by Y Herotin (2010) CS appears to stimulate the chondrocyte cells that produce cartilage. High levels of CS seem to increase the collagen needed to make the cartilage matrix. Calf care regulations New regulations for young calves have been introduced by the Ministry for Primary Industries. The regulations affect any farmer who sends calves off farm for sale or slaughter, transport operators, and meat processors of young calves. It takes a team effort to ensure all calves are treated with care and respect from birth to beyond the farm gate. And if farmers are not prepared and do not comply with regulations, they could either face fines or will not be able to transport calves off-farm. The regulations include young calves must be slaughtered as soon as possible after arrival at the slaughter premises. The maximum time a calf can be off feed is 24 hours. Loading and unloading facilities must be provided when young calves are transported for sale or slaughter. This means that calves can walk onto and off vehicles by their own action. Transporters must also take all reasonable steps to use these facilities. Suitable shelter must be provided for young calves before, during and after transportation. DairyNZ have a new ‘Fit for transport’ poster available for the calf shed which can be downloaded from their website. This provides a visual reminder and checklist at the point of bobby calf selection of the eight criteria that calves

The sign will help ensure all calves are fit for transport and provide a simple way for farmers and calf collectors to communicate regularly. Calves must physically fit for transport and be at least four days of age (96 hours) before they are transported offfarm for sale or slaughter. This applies to any young calf that is up to 14 days old and has been separated from its mother. There is to be no use of blunt force to the head for putting down

calves, except in an emergency situation to avoid unnecessary suffering. This applies to any calf that has not been weaned off milk, or a milk replacement. There is a maximum duration of 12 hours’ journey time for young calves being transported. This applies to any young calf that is up to 14 days old and has been separated from its mother. The prohibition on transport by sea across Cook Strait applies to any young calf that is up to 14 days old and has been separated from its mother. For more information about the new regulations visit the Ministry for Primary Industries website.

Free trade negotiations welcomed Beef+Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association welcome Minister McClay’s announcement that New Zealand will start free trade agreement negotiations with members of the Pacific Alliance trade bloc, including Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. “In the recently less certain trade environment, this is a very positive development,” said Sam McIvor, CEO of B+LNZ. “We appreciate the Government’s continued leadership on trade liberalisation which is vital to our sector as approximately 90 per cent of our sheepmeat and 83 per cent of beef production is exported. Tim Ritchie, CEO of the MIA says whilst sheep and beef exports to this region are currently relatively modest (approximately NZ$22 million in 2016), these are fast-growing economies. “Our companies see good potential to grow our exports in the future under an FTA. Mexico, for example has tariffs of 25 percent on beef and 10 percent on sheepmeat. “We understand that the Pacific Alliance is interested in building a closer relationship with the Asia-Pacific and this positions New Zealand strategically very well to be a bridge in this wider process.” Federated Farmers says it’s excellent news that New Zealand is underway

with free trade agreement negotiations with the Pacific Alliance countries. The announcement that the five nations will strive to improve market access and level the playing field is an important step in the New Zealand Trade Agenda 2030 strategy. It also represents the ongoing commitment from four members of the Trans Pacific Partnership to improving the trade environment in the Pacific region. Two-way trade between these four nations and New Zealand is currently worth $1.1 billion annually but there is plenty of scope to boost that further. Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru together imported $3.5 billion of dairy

products in 2016 and the removal of trade barriers with New Zealand could see us win a bigger slice of that. “The potential for dairy trade with Mexico is particularly significant,” said Federated Farmers vice-president Andrew Hoggard. New Zealand’s dairy exports to Mexico, population 127 million, were curtailed when the USA settled a deal with them under NAFTA in the 1990s. “If we could get back to an even playing field on trade with Mexico it could be very significant for New Zealand dairy — and sheep and beef as well,” said Mr Hoggard. “Free trade is a step forward wherever it happens, and with the Pacific Alliance being the equivalent of the world’s sixth largest economy , we look forward to smooth and speedy negotiations of a high quality agreement.”

Ready for anything by Andy Bryenton

The venerable Yamaha AG 125 has been a common sight on Kiwi farms for so long now that it’s almost part of the scenery. Simple, easy to maintain and able to take a lot of good-natured punishment, the little blue machine is easy to compare to other hard-wearing rural classics like the swanndri and the gumboot. As an upshot, there’s a whole generation out there who know how to ride an AG 125. Many kids from farming families would have mastered the diminutive single-cylinder bike with its distinctive knobbly tyres well before it was time to learn to drive the family car. And that means there’s a huge crossover market for Yamaha’s street-ready version of the Ag 125 — the YTZ125. Really, it’s just common sense. Adding the necessary bits and pieces to allow a number plate and road legal status was a snap for Yamaha, who after all have a stable of road bikes ranging from the commuter practical to the blisteringly fast. And there are numerous times when zipping down from the homestead to the local shops, around to the neighbours, or indeed down the highway to another block of grazing land is on the cards. The YTZ125 allows, if nothing else, the ability to do this without changing vehicles. But there’s more to this machine than just convenience. With the same

125cc of power from an air cooled four stroke single cylinder motor, the same terrain-busting ride height and suspension, and a similar feel to the AG 125, the YTZ125 inspires on road confidence and still allows dirt-trail and paddock work. Perhaps like nothing else, this machine bridges the gap between two worlds of motorcycling — that of the serious workhorse and that of riding for the sheer pleasure of it. Coming out of a heritage of real farm endurance — the YTZ has been extensively put through its paces in the South Island back blocks — there’s nimble balance and lightweight handling here which fosters confidence. Those who have experienced the open road as well as the trail may very well be tempted to look at Yamaha’s other offerings — a selection which will have true petrol heads salivating. In the meantime, the learner approved, farm tested YTZ125 offers practicality as well as a taste of the ‘other side’ of motorcycling — and all for a very neat price.

by Andy Bryenton

For decades, Deutz Fahr have been perfecting their range of tractors to meet stringent European emissions controls while still delivering maximum power and performance. With numerous awards in their trophy case and a team of engineers to rival that of fellow German manufacturers like Mercedes Benz and Porsche, their claim to the title of top agricultural machinery fabricators has only been strengthened by the arrival of their latest offering — the ultra powerful Nine Series. Built on the premise that there’s no substitute for raw power — except raw power under precision control — the heat of the new Nine Series is an uncompromising 336 horsepower intercooled twin turbo six cylinder diesel. High injection pressure and computerised engine management deliver 90 percent of max torque well down the rev range, allowing this tractor to tackle even the most heavy-duty tasks when mated up with serious machinery. The on board computer system optimises injection for efficiency no matter if the Nine Series is moving from field to field or engaged in serious power harrowing, undersowing or cultivation. Front and rear PTO with multiple selectable speeds comes as standard, because efficient large-scale farming demands big implements. And it’s all commanded from a cab which has been designed as both comfortable and

intuitive, with controls easily at hand. In fact, innovations such as Deutz Fahr’s continuously variable TTv transmission mean there are less things for the operator to worry about — the Nine Series is also built with modern satellite navigation and mapping in mind. With the ability to conquer long days in the field comes the necessity to ensure operator safety and comfort — so extra care and attention has been lavished on making the cab of the Nine Series roomy and well ventilated, with acres of glass and a clear view down the

sloping bonnet to make precise turning as simple as possible. In fact, it’s amazing how easy it is to place and handle such a large and powerful machine, even on uneven terrain in the field. This combination of power, precision and the ability to adapt to multiple roles on the farm saw the Nine Series win the ‘Golden Tractor’ award for design on its initial release — further tuning and fettling have only made it a better machine. In the order of high-horsepower tractors, this is the benchmark to beat.

Celebrating the hundred by Andy Bryenton

In 1834, when New Zealand was yet to become a political entity, and the Victorian Age of steam had barely begun, Japanese trader Yataro Iwasaki was born. His name may not be familiar, but that of the firm he founded in 1870 certainly is — and so is their red triple diamond logo. Iwasaki was the father of Mitsubishi, which grew into a collection of companies in fields as diverse as banking, trade and electronics. But this year we celebrate the birthday of perhaps their most important division — one hundred years of Mitsubishi motors.

In 1917, the already massive shipbuilding arm of Mitsubishi developed a road going car to be used largely by the Japanese government. The Mitsubishi Model A was a stylistic echo of the European cars of the time, with a folddown windscreen, spoked wheels and a small gasoline engine. But what it lacked in power it made up for in promise. From such small beginnings came a legacy of constant improvement, leading from this tiny wooden-sided vehicle to the monster Evo rally cars and Paris-toDakar conquering off roaders of the modern age. Aside from the trophy winners and street machines which have made the silver screen (the legendary Evo VII was a star of the Fast and Furious franchise), there have been smaller victories with longer reaching consequences. The Mirage proved that a small Japanese car could have attitude. The V3000 became the chase and patrol car for our traffic police. The Legnum gave dads with large families the option of a hot station wagon. And the list goes on. Mitsubishi cars have been part of Kiwi life since the 60s, and their vans

and trucks support an army of tradies. To celebrate 100 years, the Mitsubishi company are looking to do something a bit special. While other car makers might release a new concept car that’s all 30 inch rims and blown V12, Mitsubishi have gone back to the past and added a dash of the future. That’s right — they’ve

taken the original 1917 Model A and contracted famed US mod shop West Coast Customs to kit it out with their plug in hybrid electric drivetrain. Out of the ordinary? Of course. We can’t help but think that Yataro Iwasaki would approve of his legacy being carried on in a way that exemplifies thinking ahead.
