A commitment to quality and waterway management has established Jeff and Helen as industry leaders, while their farming approach is successful in terms of both live-weight gains and sustainability. “They are walking the talk. Running a successful, modern farming business tailored well to Northland conditions, plus generously sharing their time and experience throughout the wider industry,” the judges said. “We were inspired by their commitment to research, planning and implementation of a whole farm system, carefully designed around financially and environmentally sustainable production. “Climate resilience and adaptation is built into the business, with an emphasis on water security, soil protection, land retirement and planting suited to the land capability.” The Far North business is run across three properties, with the success of their management plan reflected in the amount and quality of pasture. GPS mapping divides the properties into grazing cells, allowing stock to be moved regularly and have long winter rotations. The judges commended the creation of generous riparian buffers, along with biodiversity protection and enhancement.

Fighting for

RURAL KIWIS by Ann van Engelen Mark Cameron farms at Ruawai in Kaipara, and he is a passionate advocate for New Zealand’s rural industries, which he says may improve because of the recent pandemic.

“A

round 1988, as a young adult, I secured my first farm job here in Ruawai and now own two dairy farms in the area. My wife Jodie and I have a blended family of four children, and our business is milking cows and living the country dream,” says Mark. The couple farm predominantly Friesian cattle and a few mixed breeds on their 285 acre property. “We are a grade two farm with grass silage, and a bit of kernel. We don’t grow maize due to the land size. We work as efficiently as possible and operate close to budget.”

Last year, Mark instigated the Farmer Pride rallies to rural small towns across the country. “I saw the egregious nature of what was happening to provincial New Zealand and was saddened by the lack of desire and self-belief of farmers. I saw first-hand for nearly a decade the nature of the constant government bureaucracy getting in the way of everyday kiwis in rural New Zealand. “As an advocate for the families and the small rural businesses that support them, I wanted to bring to light the plight of farmers to the government. We wanted to bring attention to the

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES July 2020

The Farmer Pride rallies were started as a way to support rural New Zealand afforestation of large parts of rural New Zealand to mitigate climate change, which had specifically been mandated. The Paris Climate Accord was specifically where I saw an affront to farmers’ rights. “The idea started as a cowshed conversation with my partner. I had had enough of farmers taking their own lives due to the enormity of the tasks they had to undertake or ultimately having to sell their farms with small businesses being affected. “People arrived in Dargaville and Ruawai on their tractors as symbology because every day, of every month, of every year we are on them. Tractors help bring food to New Zealand and the world. We are the best in the world at that, and I wanted to show the greater audience that we would always be here to feed them. “We had great progress and gained momentum but were saddened by the apathy farmers have a lot of, as they are so often browbeaten. “They have a lot of stuff in their lives. It would have been great for the rally

to gather more traction. Now, in fact, what Covid-19 has done is brought the importance of farmers to the world as food producers. The world is now grateful and no longer looking through a macrobiotic lens at us. All through the virus, we have continued to feed our nation and other nations, and now the pure illustration of that has come to light. “Now we are stabilised again as a part of national pride, and we are more than happy to be part of the society that gets the country going again. The general consensus in the wider public has been very positive. “The growers, including kumara, have carried on and were harvesting during the lockdown and have been as active as they have ever been. They made the necessary covid disease operational standards and did everything to carry on farming as we know we have a nation to feed. “The crops have to come out, cows need to be milked, and beef and cattle farmers continue to do what they do

Mark believes farmers across the country can be proud of producing quality food for the world well. I will live here forever, if I am fit and able. I have kidney disease and was told I had 18 months to live and have managed to stay away from that since. I eat healthy and sleep as much as I need. Everyone has their stuff, and this is ours. I certainly didn’t want this, but it happened — I haven’t allowed

it to chase away my dream. Like most farmers, I found a way to manage and carry on. “New Zealand for me is the best country on earth and us farmers can celebrate being a big part of that and I charge my glass to anyone else that does it.”

Sandy Bay’s buzz

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

A vision to create an encouraging environment for farmers through surfing was a goal Stephen Thomson pursued two summers ago starting in Gisborne, and last summer added Sandy Bay as the sixth national location.

“I

watched a documentary called Resurface. Soldiers from the American army that fought in Afghanistan were taken surfing to help them work through Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,” says Stephen. “It helped the soldiers get their mental health back on track. I thought if it was working for them, we could use the model to help prevent mental health issues for farmers. I didn’t know if we would get anyone with mental health issues but thought it was a great way to get people away from the farm. “Getting a break from business with no dogs, sheep, cattle, drought or cell phones around you for a couple of hours every week is incredibly refreshing. When we started in Gisborne, we had consistent numbers of attendance and

were surprised how interested people were. Then we received requests to take the idea to other regions. This year, we also ran programmes in Mount Maunganui, Waihi Beach, Gore Bay and Sumner Beach in Christchurch, and Sandy Bay in Whangarei. “The South Island farmers were desperate for the initiative. Then Jake Thomson rang from Whangarei saying they were having the worst drought and could we please help the farmers there.” Stephen and his team set up and kicked off the programme, which proved to be a success. All gear is hired using sponsorship money, meaning there is no cost to the farmers. “A couple of weeks in, the lockdown happened, but we know that next summer the ice has been broken for

LOVE YOUR LAND

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES July 2020

Farmers across the country have joined together at various beaches to learn to surf through the Surfing for Farmers initiative

the guys to carry on. They really enjoy the concept of getting off-farm and are buzzing. We had more than 30 farmers who have never surfed in their life, getting on boards and telling their mates to try it. “Being reached out to by five other regions is huge. Every week during summer, an average of 120 farmers get to ride the waves. They get off-farm and have a good time and can leave their problems behind for a moment. For me it is about creating a new habit — it wouldn’t matter what it was. If we are teaching them to get off-farm that is a major achievement, but there is a lot of science behind saltwater and mental health, so surfing is a great option. “My parents are farmers, I enjoy working on the farm when I can. I am a real estate agent for Bayleys Rural and

was a farm consultant for 13 years. I understand the pressures people are under, It is nice to be able to get people along for a surf and chill out a bit. The break helps people make better decisions the next day when they are at home. “The Surfing for Farmers initiative means girls and guys who haven’t done any surfing and come along talking about the farm turn their conversation with excitement to ‘did you see the wave I caught?’ “The cool thing this summer was people in their first drought were talking to guys who have experienced many droughts. Being more relaxed means they can discuss their issues with older guys and get advice when they normally wouldn’t. One guy said surfing was a better option than being at home looking

out the window at the lack of feed onfarm. It gave him time to breathe and get away from the worry. “Wives, partners and children can come along, but the priority for the gear goes to the farmers. Children who have their own gear can come with their dads, and it is awesome to see them surfing side by side. It is good for the family to come if it encourages the farmer to participate, even if the children just play on the beach. “The initiative is geared at the workers getting a break and to be able to talk adult. It is about the fencer, the shepherd, the contractor having time out. Shepherds may be stressed due to stock condition, or the fencer may

The local Northland sponsors include Rural Support Trust, Brent Wallace Contracting, Warren Kiernan Engineering and Pumps Northland. Finnisha Tuhiwai, is a packhouse manager for Maungatapere Berries and is a finalist the inaugural Ahuwhenua Young Maori Grower Awards.

T

he Ahuwhenua Award is designed to recognise up-and-coming young Maori in the farming and horticulture sectors. “I was born in Whangarei and started out as a dairy farmer, but changed to horticulture because work at Maungatapere Berries was closer to home for me,” says 25-year-old Finnisha. “My iwi is Ngati Te Rino and Te Parawhau — which is the Mangakahia Valley area. My papas were very much into the land and river, so that has been passed through the generations of our family. They taught me lots growing up, including gardening and about eels. They were at the forefront in the area and very knowledgeable. My mum’s sister has continued passing on the knowledge about the eels, which were learned from my grandfather.

“When I began working in the dairy industry, I was torn between horticulture and agriculture career choices. When the opportunity came to work with raspberries here at Maungatapere Berries, I decided to give it a go and love it. I do the propagating right down to tissue culture, repotting or finding roots from the main plants.” Finnisha carries out the maintenance and harvest of the plants. “The plants grow in tunnels and there are a lot of processes to get what you want. It can have its challenges but having great teachers helps. I enjoy the fact that we have kiwifruit, blackberries and blueberries as well. “The packhouse is my main division, and seeing the packaged result, and what goes to our customers is always encouraging. Malley has ensured we have the right knowledge and training. “Someone suggested I enter the Ahuwhenua Horticulture Awards, and Patrick encouraged me. Having the judges come on-site was scary, and I was shy but didn’t want to disappoint. I didn’t realise how much I knew until I went through the discussions with him and shared my skills and knowledge. “I suggest other young Maori enter future awards and am hoping someone from here will have a go and make it a tradition. “Horticulture is always changing, and I put my hand up to learn everything I could to understand the different aspects of the job. My goals include continuing my education and further developing the packhouse, looking at new technology and how the

business can be the most productive. I love being involved in the decisionmaking, troubleshooting ideas, working on processes and training others. Horticulture is an excellent career, and I am able to earn while I learn, which is important for helping support my family. Spending time studying and putting that study into practice goes hand in hand. Judge Aaron Hunt of Te Tumu Paeroa says the standard of entrants was very high and reflects the number of young Maori who are making successful careers in horticulture. “Maori have always been involved in the horticulture sector and recently in significant new enterprises. The sector has natural appeal to young Maori because it offers an outdoor lifestyle combined with excellent career prospects leading to management

roles. As judges, we found all the entrants passionate about the industry and enthusiastic about their future prospects. Finnisha has completed other personal development training including leadership courses, the storage and handling of berry fruit course, Train the Trainer and Kiwifruit Orchard Skills through PrimaryITO. “I am currently studying Horticulture Level 4 — Fruit Production and would like to do the agribusiness diploma. I hope to take my experience back to my people and be a great role model for my family and show that you can make this a career for yourself. Mr Malley says the family is extremely proud of Finissha’s accomplishments. “She is one of the inaugural people to enter the competition and get through

Finnisha is a real leader of the new wave of people that are investing in the industry. “She originally came here as a casual kiwifruit pruner then returned when we transitioned into berry fruit in 2016. “She has built herself up to be the packhouse manager and is very valuable to us. “As a business owner, I can delegate the entire area to her, and that is fantastic in such a short period of time. “She has become a success story due to her ability to take advantage of opportunities. I say lucky us to have her on our staff. The winner for 2020 will be announced later this year.

Dedication to plan gets results Just Avocados’ orchard management programmes led by technical manager Erica Faber are taking Northland orchards and growers to the next level.

John Emett, Just Avocados Grower Services for Northland and South Auckland, says Erica comes with considerable experience in developing large avocado orchards, originally in South Africa, and has a unique perspective on avocado orchard management. “Erica’s approach to nutrition is something new and not what growers are used to, particularly her foliar programme is not what other providers necessarily prescribe to, but it has had fantastic results for our growers.” Grant and Samantha Kokich have been growing avocados in Ngataki for more than 10 years on their two orchards Waikopu Avocados and Henderson Bay Avocados. They started working with Erica Faber when she first joined Just Avocados four years ago. Grant says that while their orchards looked healthy, they lacked consistency of high production. “We had a good programme, but we weren’t applying it — we weren’t mixing the cake well.” Samantha adds that pruning was something they had struggled with, especially on the older trees. “Just Avocados has helped us a lot with the pruning through their field days and John and Erica coming onto the property and now their online workshops. “Erica has also explained a lot to us about the trees and why things happen, and we understand now,” says Samantha. A foliar fertiliser programme and pruning were the main features of the

initial programme Erica developed for the Kokich’s trees. Erica says that initially, it is important to focus on tree health and structure rather than pushing production. “If trees are in a decline state, pushing production will stress the tree further.” Samantha says people she talks to about her orchard management programme are not always convinced about the foliar fertiliser aspect. “Foliar sprays make a huge difference, the trees seem to be a lot stronger and look healthier, which is setting them up for the next step of producing fruit,” says Samantha. “It has taken time for the trees to recover, and they are now there.” The Kokichs across their two orchards had experienced low production of never more than 10–12 tonnes a hectare. Then in 2019–20 they achieved 23.4 tonnes a hectare on Waikopu and 24.5 tonnes a hectare on Henderson Bay. John says the results are a true show of what can happen when growers stick to the programme. “Samantha, in particular, is great. She does everything in the programme and on time.”

Just Avocados technical manager Erica Faber and avocado growers Grant and Samantha Kokich are working together to improve productivity on the Kokich’s two orchards in Ngataki

“I like having a plan, and that’s what I like about these programmes, you know what you are doing and when,” says Samantha. Grant says that after seeing the results, he will be continuing with the programme. “We are getting good results, and we’d like to continue that or higher now. “I’d estimate Henderson Bay having 30 tonnes a hectare this year.”

John says that technical expertise is available to all Just Avocados growers either directly through dealing with Erica or a member of the Grower Services team delivering those principles. Please see justavocados.co.nz for more details.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES July 2020

We are being toyed with by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

The government is playing with us. They are treating us like children and seem to have the naive belief that if they manipulate the message, they will suck us into voting for them at the next election — despite the litany of failures we have had to endure for the last three years. When I look back at this time three years ago when I was on the campaign trail, I remember thinking that my most potent and insidious opponent was not that wily old fox Winston Peters, it was the array of outrageous promises being made by the Labour Party. My consolation was two-fold: One: I didn’t think Northlanders would be sucked in by them (they weren’t) and Two: The Labour Party didn’t think they would actually win and have to live up to their promises. Well, they did get in (thanks to NZ First), and they have dug themselves into a huge hole with an abject failure to deliver on any of their promises. Even worse, and in desperation, they have resorted to manipulating the message and the media in an effort to make themselves look better than they are. Moreover, some of that, a lot of that is holding the country back for their own personal and political aims. An example is a recent announcement by the repetitive self-promoter and big-spender Shane Jones of a $3 billion spend-up on infrastructure to ‘revitalise’ the economy post-Covid. He would only name 12 projects the money would be spent on, preferring to drip-feed the other projects through a

series of announcements leading up to the election. How’s that for playing politics with our money? There is one other thing. The current drive, in the light of post-pandemic recovery, to fast-track the Resource Management Act. Do you know that the National Party submitted no fewer than 56 major projects, including six in Northland, that we felt should be fasttracked, and the government voted every one of them down? Every one! Why? Maybe because they weren’t their ideas and they would gain nothing from them politically. Moreover, maybe they just wanted to make the announcements themselves. Whatever the case, it is my firm belief that we are being toyed with for cynical political gain. It is also my belief that we will again see through that come September 19.

An essential to make energy by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we usually make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good-quality CoQ10. Part one CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. It can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation. Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately, this enzyme (HMG-

CoA reductase) is also needed to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50 per cent. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well-researched and patented US product CoQsol. It is the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority (BCA) that certain works meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. Some minor work is exempt under the act, but consent is required for most work including such additional things as swimming pools, spa pools and fencing, some retaining walls, decks, non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres as well as renovations to existing structures in certain cases. Your one-stop shop is your local council. If you are engaging a contractor, the red tape involved will usually be handled as part of your deal. However, there may be unexpected rural consent provisions to consider too. You or your builder can apply online, or you will need application forms that can be obtained from council’s websites, or council office and consents are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. All building work should be completed

SHED SUPPLIERS AND BUILDERS

within two years from the date that the building consent was granted. In the case of rural builds, a house must be 25m from any boundary in the rural general zone and 10m from a boundary in the rural residential zone (10m from a road boundary) as well as more than 50m from any existing or consented dwelling on an adjoining property. Your house must not breach the skyline when viewed from a public place within two kilometres. If part of a recent subdivision, it is possible your title may

be subject to a consent notice that you have to build on an identified ‘building platform’. However, it is still possible to apply for consent to build outside the designated platform. Councils, in fact, have some control over colour and types of cladding listed in their district plans. Cladding that will be frowned upon is usually something akin to unpainted corrugated iron. You or your agent then will need to supply a site and floor plan and concept elevations of your proposed house.

Rural Building/sheds & shelters Stepping into the future by Paul Campbell

Evolution seems to accelerate more rapidly year by year, and when embarking on a building project in the 21st century, we can be forgiven for being overwhelmed by the choice of materials available. Life was no doubt simpler back in the day when wood was the way, tanalised Pinus radiata for preference over native tree solutions in grandpa’s day. Now technology means a rest for nature and new building materials for homes and buildings tend to be more eco-friendly and cost-effective, but wood still has a place — only it’s been tweaked a bit. Laminated timber is prefabricated wood, and it can also support high-rise buildings as well as humble homes. There’s also a quantum leap forward in a glass substitute, a ceramic alloy that is almost twice as strong as the

jewel known as sapphire and can’t corrode. It is used to make stronger windows for homes, apart from uses in aviation and undersea exploration. The cost of electricity never goes down, and many new builds in New Zealand today are using solar panels. However, huge solar arrays are not really needed when you can use new unseen solar cells that produce power in building materials for doors and windows. Another innovation is 100 per cent recyclable aluminium foam, produced when air is infused with molten metal to produce a strong and lightweight

cladding material. However, wood is still alive — this time as ‘translucent wood.’ It provides high insulation properties, and it is biodegradable. You can use the wood in solar panels, on windows as replacements for glass because the treated wood is 90 per cent transparent. Moreover, alongside these modern innovations, there are building materials that have stood the test of time and are also environmentally desirable. Wool bricks are a mix of wool and seaweed, and they do not need firing like

traditional bricks. Earthen materials like adobe bricks and rammed earth have been used for construction since the beginning of time. Rammed earth instead of concrete is a sort of man-made rock that’s formed by compressing earth, gravel, whatever is to hand. Baled straw has great insulating properties, and its materials make a wall almost completely soundproof. Plain old stone covers a wide range of uses from flooring, walls and decorative use.

A man’s shed is his man cave, some say, but a shed can be a boon for any family. It’s in effect another useful room on the house, with a strong storage function as well as a workplace for the handyman. On rural properties, of course, the farm shed caters for a multitude of jobs. Like everything else in the building code world, size will be important as it will dictate what permits may be required from the local council. In many cases in New Zealand, a shed becomes a home build project, while there are quite a number of kitset and ready-built options on the market. Once the design is decided upon, permits applied for and in the case of an extensive rural facility, probably a building contractor lined up — a shed site needs selection, again in a rural context there will be several choices. It would seem simple enough, but a lack of forethought can prove one’s undoing. Don’t build in a low-lying area where water collects and access becomes a wet weather worry. If the shed is wanted for regular activities, woodwork, maintenance and the like, look at the light available. Tucked under a tree might seem a good idea until the sun seems a stranger. A bright and airy outlook is to be desired. Most importantly, a building inspector will establish how far your site is from property lines, streets, driveway and

sidewalks, houses, septic tanks and leach fields, et cetera. If you plan to go down the DIY road, you’ll need to have the right tools. With building supply outlets around the country, there’s no problem with selection. Many of these outlets have knowledgeable staff only too happy to advise on equipment and materials. Once you are geared up to go, the most important factor to be decided is the foundations of the new enterprise.

Most sheds can be supported by concrete blocks or treated wooden pilings, but pouring a concrete pad foundation makes for a commitment to permanence. If, of course, the DIY approach doesn’t appeal, remember that a prefabricated choice will still need something to sit on before it arrives on-site.

Plant shade trees Will Halliday, Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s senior adviser on biosecurity and animal welfare, suggests farmers considering a planting programme this winter contact their regional council or authority for advice on site selection and suitable tree and shrub options. “What might be suitable in Northland, for example, may not be appropriate for more southern regions,” he says. “Regional councils might also have funding available to help with planting or fencing-off programmes. Local nurseries are also a font of knowledge about the suitability of trees and shrubs for different climates, environments, sites, soil types and uses. New Zealand Farm Forestry Association also has valuable resources on its website. “When considering trees for shelter, think about the wind direction of both cold and desiccating winds. “Wind chill will increase the metabolic rate of livestock, and when this is combined with pregnancy or lactation, feed demand will be increased significantly, which isn’t ideal in a year where feed supplies are limited. “Having set areas where animals are protected from wind chill could be very valuable, and in mid-summer, shelter trees will protect pasture from hot, dry winds. Shelter belts will slow down the wind speed and can protect pasture and enhance pasture growth to quite a surprising distance.” While it can be challenging to be thinking about shade in the middle of winter, Will says farmers will have a good idea of where on their farm shade trees would be beneficial.

Winter is a good time to plant trees to provide shelter for stock

“Providing good shade during the heat of summer will help reduce water demand by livestock. An ideal shade tree will have height and plenty of room underneath, so the shadow moves in line with the sun, providing shade throughout the day. “Again, local nurseries or regional authorities will be able to provide advice on suitable shade trees options

for specific sites. As well as providing shade, trees such as poplars and willows help stabilise soil and can be used as an emergency feed during feed shortages. “Trees can also be of value for timber or firewood at the end of their lifetime.” For more information — go to www.beeflambnz.com/knowledge-hub.

Further along on our tour, there’s a fully operational 110-year-old woolshed shifted onsite and restored to full operation, driven by an antique Lister three horsepower petrol engine. Bruce Galloway tells the story of the club in his recent book, The Flying Farmer, launched last month. Today’s site was an eightacre scrub and pine tree block back in 2001. “Firstly, the trees were harvested free of charge by Leo Glamuzina Logging. The proceeds for the logs went into the club funds. All the stumps and rubbish were dug out. Some were transported off-site. Most were burnt. The big fires we had sure lit up the night sky. It has taken many years to complete the project, and now this display complex has turned into a great community asset and tourist facility.” Bruce Galloway signs for a book launch customer Adds president Bill: “Our club is open every Wednesday and Saturday; Bruce Galloway’s new book, The Flying also any day when we’re asked because Farmer, is available at The Lifestyler at any excuse to open up and show off our $50, plus relevant postage — phone 09 treasures is welcome.” 439 6933.

Today the club is a jewel in Dargaville’s crown, located high above the town in Harding Park. Home to an extensive new showroom of vintage and veteran machinery restored to pristine condition when first delivered to many Kaipara farms in days gone by. The current club president is Bill Fitness, who is pleased to show visitors through the collection. Outside are workshops where derelict machinery is undergoing extensive makeover work by club members. “Amongst our acquisitions is ‘Rose’ a 1952 NCK excavator, 18 tons with a 50ft boom, once used for pile driving, bridges and buildings. An RB-0 Dragline was used extensively in the Northern Wairoa drain cleaning, building stopbanks and digging water dams,” says Bill. There are some 70 to 100 vintage wheel and crawler tractors on display of many shapes, sizes and colours plus farm implements cowshed and dairy equipment, corn shellers, timber and logging machinery, horse and bullock harness. All crowd the club’s display building and members look forward to the possibility of new patronage as Kiwis look to holiday at home in the post-Covid foreseeable future.

Back in 2001, Dargaville identity Bruce Galloway advertised for interest in forming a vintage machinery club. “We had a total of six people to our first meeting,” says Bruce. “We now have a membership of around 100 and our club buildings, plant and funds are valued in excess of $2,500,000.

lex is the man behind the creation of LOMACS gateway hinge spring, which he invented to ‘last a lifetime and save farmers plenty of money, frustration and broken gateways along the way’. “I have milked hundreds of cows by hand during my lifetime. I was one of seven children, and my mum was equal to Alison Holst as a cook,” says Alex. “We set the milk in a big fridge in a shallow bowl by leaving it for a couple of days to get the thick cream on top. We had a wooden churn that would turn the cream into butter. One of the byproducts is buttermilk, which is strained off leaving pure butter. This was washed off with very cold water and mum would work salt into it like making bread with the dough in front of you.

“We had a little kauri pats with a corrugated side. Before it got too firm, she would take a tablespoon of butter and roll it between the two pats and make them long or round with a pattern for when we had visitors. “I milked by machine for four years when my wife and I were raising our children, but it didn’t appeal to me. Living 33km from town, we weren’t going to drive to get milk daily, and they all survived on full cream milk with no pasteurisation. It has none of the additives that you get nowadays with homogenised and when I wasn’t milking I would buy silver top from the shop. If you drink raw milk, your body takes what it needs and gets rid of the rest. I don’t like homogenised because your system can’t take out what it doesn’t want.

“If you have a good cow, hand milking is very therapeutic. I had one that was very friendly and easy to pump the milk out of. You need to be experienced to milk the one I have at present as she is not particularly human friendly. She is a Hinterwald, from around the Black Forest in Germany. The breed established itself on the rough ground and has a reputation of having a very fine-grained meat and is worth more per kilo due to that factor. “I am extremely clean with my hands and equipment. A Jersey generally has yellowish cream. Most people like white cream so they use Friesian, Shorthorn, Simmental or Ayrshire. “In 2012, I won the Steak of Origin title for the best steak in New Zealand with a Hinterwald steer out of nearly 500 entries countrywide. There are not many of this breed in the country. “We don’t sell our raw milk. You need your sheds up to standard and a permit. I have my stainless steel bucket, a very fine mesh, and I keep the concrete floor area sterilised. Our strainer was made about 50 years ago. “It takes 10–12 minutes to get around eight litres of milk. One cow I milked in the paddock I could get 20 litres from. She was outstanding. “I leg rope all my milking cows as there is nothing more frustrating than when you are just about finished, and it lifts its legs and puts it straight into the bucket. “Most of the cream comes from the last few drops of the milking. Some get clever and hold back. You beat it by putting the calf on her to stimulate her, and then get the last bit out. “Our daughter Carla makes her own cheese, and we still make our own butter. There are a lot of things we could do if we had time.”

Livestock transportation solutions by Ann van Engelen

For Scott Ballance and the livestock team at the Semenoff Group, a day’s work means considering the welfare of animals in their care as they transport livestock around Northland and beyond. Based in Dargaville, Scott is the general manager of the livestock division. With stock trucks based in Whangarei, Dargaville, Silverdale and Kaikohe, Scott manages the team of 15 drivers travelling from the Auckland Harbour Bridge to the top of the north and into the Waikato District. “I grew up in Maramanui, and my dad owned a livestock trucking company. I learned to drive young and did a stint at Fonterra in lower-level management when I left school and then worked for my father-in-law driving tip trucks before taking over the family company from dad. “In 2018, after 54 years in business, we sold to Stan Semenoff with the vision to help the industry grow and survive. We had taken the company as far as we could, and Stan has a larger area of service offering more opportunity. “A stock truck driver is always handling live animals and has their welfare to consider. They spend multiple hours managing the locations they go to and loading and unloading stock daily. There is a lot of planning, as well. “We mostly collect beef, dairy and sheep with a small amount of deer and

great for your animals too. Moving live loads is different from normal driving, and there is a lot of health and safety involved, along with animal welfare compliance which our drivers are very aware of. I have met many good people through this job that I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

“We meet newcomers to the areas when farms sell or staff move on. It is rewarding having good relationships with the farmers and stock agents. “Knowing that we are doing the best for the animals in our care until they get to where we are taking them is important to us.”

UK negotiations positive The red meat sector has welcomed the announcement of the launch of free trade agreement negotiations between the United Kingdom and New Zealand. “The UK is an important market for New Zealand’s high-value lamb exports and has good potential for beef. “The FTA is an opportunity to strengthen our bilateral relationship and generate additional export revenue for the country,” says chief executive of the Meat Industry Association Sirma Karapeeva. “New Zealand relies on secure, stable and predictable market access to support the livelihoods of thousands of New Zealanders and businesses. The red meat sector employs almost five per cent of New Zealand’s full-time workforce, accounting for 92,000 jobs, predominantly in the regions. A high-quality, comprehensive and ambitious FTA with the UK will deliver real prosperity for our regional and national economies.” Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive Sam McIvor says New Zealand has long-established relationships

with the UK red meat sector. “Our red meat exports complement seasonal production in the UK so that customers can buy high-quality red meat all-year around. Crucially, trade with New Zealand ensures there is lamb available at Easter and Christmas. “As a signatory to the statement supporting open and predictable trade in food products, we hope to see this reflected in the UK’s approach to FTA negotiations.” The UK was New Zealand’s thirdlargest individual market in 2019, behind China and the United States. The UK was also New Zealand’s largest market for chilled lamb in 2019, worth almost $384 million. The successful conclusion of a highquality UK-NZ FTA would support the UK’s strategy of joining the international trade community and the potential joining of the Comprehensive and Progressive Transpacific Partnership (CPTPP) in Sirma Karapeeva, chief executive of the Meat Industry Association

When the hot hatch was invented, back in the days when I was able to fit comfortably inside the front seat of one, and the concept of health and safety consisted of every workplace carrying a half-used packet of sticking plasters, they were confections of lightness and power-to-kilogram ratio, which would have made Colin Chapman smile.

Suzuki has three great small vehicles, which deliver old school charm and economy — Swift Sport, Jimny and the newly facelifted Ignis

engine that just sings, sounding like one of the big S brand’s road bikes more than a miniature SUV and uses 4.7 litres for every 100km. Best yet, there’s a fivespeed manual in the GLX model so you can feel connected to the drive, just like in an old hot hatch of yesterday. Unlike those classics, the Ignis is packed tight with fresh electronics and connectivity, so you’ll not have to endure either the macarena or cassette tapes.

SURE THING REAL WORLD TOUGH. REAL WORLD VALUE.

In the end, though, it’s the fact that the Ignis performs the ultimate classic hot hatch trick that makes it nigh irresistible. It’s quirky and cool, in a way that’s not at all trying hard. If a supercar is a fussy, over-tailored suit, this is a T-shirt and board shorts. It might not be all business when it comes to pure speed, but it’s under $20,000 new or facelifted, compact, feel-good fun.

T, WORK, P EA , L Y

AY

However, as time has gone by, the hot hatch, like many of us who remember their fun, tyre-squealing heyday, has gotten portly. Rotund. Stout. Any number of euphemisms, which skirt around the dreaded ‘f’ word (not that, one, the other one). From the grandaddy, the Mini Cooper, to game-changing VW Golf to the rear-wheel-drive Starlet and the Peugeot 205 turbo, we’ve gone to sensible and safe smaller cars that care more about petrol mileage and less about making every roundabout feel like the carousel corner on the Nurburgring. Size is the enemy. Colin knew it when he designed the seven, and the tiny little Elan. So, the very smallest of a new crop of crossover SUVs capture something that has gone the way of cassette tapes and the macarena when it comes to the hatchback. They’re zippy, tiny, light and fun. The Suzuki Ignis is just on the button of this trend. It doubles down on the cute and chunky look of Suzuki’s new Jimny (a cartoon G-Wagen with attitude) by being a tiny little cartoon Grand Cherokee, with attitude. Cheap meets cheerful thanks to a dualjet 1.2-litre

Forging a new path by Andy Bryenton

You’d have to be either stupid, brave or very very confident to start a new car company. Many begin with high hopes, a shed and dream, and leave with none of the above after their masterwork catches fire on a test track somewhere in Germany or can’t fulfil the promises made by early design sketches. Big names have fallen in this pit, such as DeLorean, Marcos and TVR. Others have gone on to glory. Nevertheless, when successful manufacturing and chemical company Ineos announced that they were going into the automotive world, no one quite knew what to make of their bid. Certainly, they had the global reach and innovative track record to shine in a rough and tumble industry. Their idea, a proper, rugged 4x4, was notably missing in a world full of anaemic crossovers and wheezing high street tractors with more gilding than guts. Would they crumble like the Bricklin or rise like Mr Lamborghini getting out of the tractor market? What began as a quiet pint and convo at the Grenadier pub in London has turned into an impressive exercise in function over form, a 4x4 that’s been built on a skeleton of ladder-chassis, beam axle, transfer-case engineering. The design team wanted to capture the ‘honesty’ of the great off-roaders of all time; the Willys Jeep, the W200, the Land Cruiser, the G-Wagen and of course, the daddy of them all, the Land Rover Defender. When it comes to looks, there’s a lot of all of these

in the design of the Ineos Grenadier (lucky the pub those lads met at had a suitably powerful name; the Ineos Bell and Chicken doesn’t quite have the same cachet). These are the words the Grenadier is supposed to embody — assured, robust, faithful, dependable, purposeful. Its designers say that while most examples built (they are looking at figures of 25,000 a year) won’t need to face the Serengeti or the Arctic tundra, those that do will be able to keep going, providing a comfortable and modern ride — no matter the terrain. With development by renowned auto component supplier Magna, the Grenadier will come with a powerful internal combustion engine, though its parameters are as yet undefined. Electric, it was felt, might not meet the requirements of sheer durability that were demanded; at least not yet. As to price, it’s unlikely to be cheap, but expect a sub-Mercedes G-Wagen starting point for a machine that has been designed from the first pencil stroke to be unstoppable.

Many good things have begun with a conversation at the pub — now the Ineos Grenadier looks set to be one of them

Building little legends by Andy Bryenton

With winter well underway and motocross venues consigned to seasonal mud, it’s time to consider the new season ahead and what to ride when the barriers go down to launch another exciting year on the track. For many young riders, there’s an awkward gap phase between tackling the more forgiving angles and switchbacks of the junior track on the little 50cc machine and stepping up to go wheel to wheel with the big boys. It needn’t be awkward at all, however, as exciting bikes exist to make the transition through to full power and noise.

Kawasaki’s small-displacement KX bikes have long been a favourite in this bracket. The announcement of new technology and styling for the 2021 range has come at just the right time for up-and-coming riders to ask for one under the Christmas tree. The KX65 is a perfect stepping stone for those looking for their second off-road bike after

Young riders who crave more power and versatility would love to find a 2021 model-year Kawasaki under the Christmas tree

cutting their teeth in the 50cc grade. However, it’s the surprisingly powerful KX85 which catches the attention with the looks of a much bigger machine and a powerband that’s easy to keep on through all six gears, delivering a satisfying engine note along with a surge of classic two-stroke acceleration. Built with 40 years of Kawasaki Team Green motocross experience behind it, this cracking little 84cc liquid-cooled two-stroke is simple in its design and comes with the ability to adjust to a growing rider. It’ll go the distance, as it packs enough power to keep young racers developing their skills all through this phase of their riding career. There’s a small wheel and a big wheel option available, making this a great mid-range

bike before it’s time to consider full-sized options higher up the horsepower range. That light weight also makes it nimble, easy to control, and capable of catching considerable air. Just take a look at footage of young riders putting the KX85 through its paces, and you’ll see just how much! Combine ample power with those big, high-grip tyres and 275mm of suspension travel front and rear, and you have a combination that’s proven itself in previous model years, on tracks around the world. If it’s time to move up for the 2021 season, now is the time to look at your options, and the little ‘big’ bike in neon green is a great place to start. Similar other models include Honda’s CRF110F and Yamaha’s YZF85.
