The Northern Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by Integrity Community Media, a privately owned NZ company.

Death by a thousand cuts is not a bad description of government policy for rural New Zealand, including up here in the north.

Chris Penk, MP Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate

It is especially so when you combine it with good old-fashioned ‘unintended consequences’. In other words, life gets harder when a series of policy decisions made in the capital have a compounding effect up here. On behalf of my essentially rural electorate, I’ve joined other National MPs in resisting various measures in the past few years, with the past few months being particularly bad. Extra costs are starting to pile up alarmingly high. While the government might genuinely believe that adding to the cost of large vehicles is a relatively small deal for some households and businesses, that’s certainly not the case if you add it to various other extra costs. Here, I’m thinking about the ‘feebate’ scheme that will shortly be introduced to penalise those needing to use the petrol and diesel vehicles at the larger end of the scale. Of course, this comes in conjunction with other extra transport costs such as regional fuel taxes and

increased petrol levies. While the policy is intended to encourage electric vehicle usage, this means little to those on the farm and anywhere else that EVs and hybrid vehicles are not yet practical. Another example would be the infamous SNAs or Significant Natural Areas, combined with wetlands regulations. For those who own property deemed to have particular environmental value, they can get you either way. Your land is no longer your land to use, basically. Constituents who have contacted me about these issues are often most aggrieved that environmental assessments seem to be made by someone sitting behind a desk in Wellington’s CBD searching Google Maps, disconnected from reality on the ground. For all these reasons, my colleagues and I will be supporting the Groundswell gatherings up and down the country in July. It’ll be great to see you there if you can make it. We’ll be helping to highlight the plight of rural New Zealand in the face of so many different extra stresses and strains these days. Take care out there.

Kauri Mountain track upgraded

July 2021

To better protect kauri, a 14-month, $2 million project to upgrade sections of the Te Araroa trail in Northland is progressing well, the Northland Regional Council says.

Chair of the regional council’s Biosecurity and Biodiversity Working Party Jack Craw says the regional council last year put in a successful bid to the Provincial Growth Fund for $2 million for a series of eight upgrades, with a final agreement sign off coming just before Christmas. “Kaikohe-based Johnson Contractors Ltd has 16 staff working on the project, which sees tracks upgraded to the national standard for mitigating kauri dieback, including boardwalks, box steps and resurfacing. “A recently completed upgrade in the Kauri Mountain area, east of Whangārei, saw 1,300 metres of track heavily upgraded, with more than 400 aggregate-

filled box steps encompassing more than 50 flights installed, along with two lengthy boardwalk sections, one 30 metres long, the other 18 metres. “There was also more than 500m of aggregate resurfacing as part of the upgrade, the first of eight planned jobs under the project. “Sections, where kauri trees were close to the track, were protected with 80 metres of geoweb, a special honeycombstyle mat that’s filled with bark and aggregate to help protect and promote the growth of their delicate roots. “The upgrade also included a new 5.2-metre diameter viewing platform at the peak of the roughly 250m high Kauri Mountain.

“The interesting thing about the platform is that it was deliberately constructed to match the diameter of one of the Waipoua Forest’s largest kauri, Te Matua Ngahere, which has a girth larger than its famed cousin Tāne Mahuta. “The contractor is currently on the second and third jobs at upper Kerikeri River and Wright’s Farm with two others at Onekainga and Puketotara Farm pending.” The remaining three jobs located in the Kawakawa to Helena Bay area and around Matapouri are expected to be carried out in the drier months later this year, with the 14-month project due to finish in January next year.

BEE HAPPY BY MIKE ISLE

Northern Farming Lifestyles has come across a man who has successfully made the transition from world-renowned designer to Northland apiarist, and he couldn’t be happier.

D

r Isaac Flitta is the king of queens. His Game of Thrones comprises 15 million bees spread across upwards of 250 hives or, as they are more aptly known, bee colonies dotted throughout Northland. The densest concentrations are around Maungaturoto and Waipū. Isaac says Northland is the ideal place for beekeeping because the climate and vegetation allow the collection of pollen to be a year-round activity for the busy bees. On a personal note, he and his partner Sara love living up here. They have homes in Waipū and behind their retail outlet, The Bay of Islands Honey Shop, in Kerikeri. Dr Flitta’s doctorate is a PhD in design. In that capacity, he was introduced to beekeeping or, as he prefers to call it,

apiary, we will come to the difference later. He was asked to design an eco-friendly, sustainable beehive. While researching the design, he became fascinated by the ordered and hierarchical structure of the bee colonies he studied. There was nothing else quite like it in the animal kingdom, he said. “In human terms, bee colonies take us back to the advent of human culture when everything had to be ordered and self-sufficient for us to survive. Those were the days before almost everything was done by someone else. “Bees are different. They live in a very vulnerable world and have developed a very structured existence to survive.” That is the attraction of apiary for Isaac and also, for him, the difference between apiculture and beekeeping.

hit that side of the business, too. Tourist numbers are down, and whilst the hive tours are still available, the numbers of visitors enjoying them and learning from them are nowhere near pre -Covid levels. Nevertheless, all of this is of no interest to Isaac’s bees. They are getting on with their lives, oblivious to the human turmoil surrounding them. Yet, they unknowingly pose something of a threat to our society. Dr Albert Einstein reputedly once said: “If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live.” Isaac doubts Einstein said

that and, in any case, doesn’t believe it to be true. Nevertheless, there are challenges facing the industry, and these can and do impact on society. Global bee numbers are declining, and so are the numbers of people working in the industry. One commercial beekeeper NFL spoke to is considering getting out of the industry entirely or at least making it just a hobby. That is despite his product, mānuka honey, commanding record prices. The destructive varroa virus arrived here in 2000, and the industry is still struggling to recover from that. The

good news is that New Zealand, and Northland, in particular, is leading the way in the business of beekeeping and the associated technology. That is the reason Northland’s Isaac Flitta, who has made major contributions to both the business and the technology, continues to be a very happy man.

New Zealand’s manuka honey is commanding record prices

Servicing 15 million bees keeps the doctor busy

Isaac says the latter means a keeper of bees, whilst the former suggests and requires a deep understanding of the colonies’ nature and structure. He services his 250 hives on his own. It is a full-time job — one he enjoys. So much so that he called one of his companies, Happy Beekeeping Ltd,for the simple yet profound reason that beekeeping makes him happy. It has been quite a career transition. Isaac came to New Zealand from England eight years ago and lectured on design at Unitech. He also used his time and knowledge to write and publish an impressive array of scientific papers. He is still an in-demand speaker on the global scientific circuit. However, it is apiculture that dominates his world these days. As well as servicing his hives, Isaac designs all his brand packaging, advertising, website and even founded the Waipū Beekeepers Club to attract others to beekeeping. Partner Sara manages the Bay of Islands Honey Shop, which has a vast array of honey and skin-care related products. It has visitor tours of the adjacent hives, including what is believed to be the largest hive in Australasia and perhaps even the world. However, like most industries, Isaac and Sara’s activities have been hit hard by Covid. Honey exports were a big part of the business, but they have either dried up completely or the shipping charges are now exorbitant and, Isaac believes, unsustainable. The Honey Shop remains a major tourist attraction, but Covid had

into contract and sharemilking and work up to farm ownership. “I got a job on the farm, and after six months, the farm manager left, and I was promoted to the position. Later Sumit was offered the farm assistant position alongside me. “In India, it takes one person to manage 10 cows as we mostly milk by hand. We found the farming scale here huge, but easier to manage the large herds due to the technology we use. “The farm owner helps us through our systems, and we love discussing our ideas with other farmers. We came here with nothing, and we have found talking to others is the best way to learn. “After managing one season, a contract milking position came available with our employers, and then Sumit went into farm management. After a couple of seasons,

anoj holds a Bachelor in Agriculture, while Sumit has a Diploma in Business Management and level four in agriculture. “We had a small family farm in India, and when we finished school, I thought I should go to another country and explore agriculture,” says Manoj. “I came to New Zealand as an agriculture student, and Sumit followed six months later to study business management. “We didn’t want to rely on our parents financially, so we worked in a kiwifruit orchard. We used to milk 8–10 cows by hand in India and were very surprised when we saw our first big dairy farm here. We discovered the New Zealand dairy farming system is totally different from back home in India, and it really appealed to us. We talked to the farm owners, and they explained you could go

we were offered contract milking on another of their farms and a sharemilking position as well. “We have quite a big staff and milk 760 cows. One farm is a system two, and one is a system four. On the system four, we use maize silage, palm kernel and grass silage. “On the system two, we use a bit of palm kernel during winter and grass silage. When we first arrived, the system two farm achieved 370kgMS per cow, and we have lifted that to 420kgMS using the extra supplement. “We have achieved 530kgMS per cow up from 390kgMS on the system four. We do nine weeks mating and calve over eight weeks. Our herd is Friesian Kiwi Cross, and we AI the tail end with short gestation Kiwi cross. “When my parents came here to visit, mum cried all night as we had no

neighbours, and she thought we were isolated here in Paihiatua/Eketahuna. When she met the farm owners, she was happy and realised we are fine. “We have made lots of friends, and New Zealand is now our home. We enjoy attending farming discussion groups and networking with others in the industry. We wouldn’t be where we are without our employers who gave us the support and opportunity. “Giving a sharemilking opportunity to a migrant was a risk they were willing to take to help us. They didn’t know us when we applied, and we understand that they gave us a chance. “Their help has helped us get to where we are today. “We focus on minimising waste and increasing the farm efficiency. We have worked really hard, and it has paid off.

“When we went to Hamilton for the awards, we didn’t have a speech ready as we thought if we got a merit we would be very lucky, as all the regional winners were outstanding. When we were announced as the national winners, we were surprised. “We are very immersed in the Kiwi culture now. “We used to go home nearly every year, or our parents would come here, but with Covid, we couldn’t, but our win made it into the newspaper there. We come from North India, a two-hour drive from Delhi, and the community is very proud of us. Our strength is that our team works together. Our goal is to grow our business and step into farm ownership in the future.”

Orchids to the fore by Ann van Engelen

Kane and Gail Matthews began growing Cymbidium orchids at Pioneer Orchids, Poroti, 20 years ago and have since developed many varieties of their own.

“O

rchids are beautiful flowers and lovely to work with. Some have a fragrance and others don’t, and they come in a variety of colour combinations,” says Gail. “Recently, I was photographing some blooms and got fixated on the lips of the flowers. There are so many different styles of lip and frills. They are amazing. “What is quite cool is we are seeing young people come into the industry. One employee completed a horticulture course at polytech and has been with us for five years. She has great attention to detail and a positive attitude, which we appreciate. “Our other employee would be one of the longest-lasting workers in the industry that I know of. Growing orchids is a dying industry because many growers are

retiring, and there is no one to take over from them. “Through studying at polytech, people can get work placement, internships or apprenticeships that can build you up to buy into the business. Starting up small and building each year is achievable. “In the year 2000, there were over 200 orchid businesses in New Zealand, and now we are down to under 40. It is a longterm industry. “We call work our counselling sessions. You are working with each other all day, every day, and we share our lives together amongst the plants. Our staff are like family. “Kane and I arrived from Zimbabwe on November 11, 2000. Zimbabwe was dangerous for farmers at the time, and Kane still recalls us arriving at Auckland

Airport and being ushered to the front of the queue because we had our two children in tow. “We had our passports and visas in hand, and the lady said welcome to New Zealand. “It was such a sigh of relief to be somewhere safe to start a new life. We purchased our property in 2001 and started off with 1,500 metres. We bought orchid collections from another grower little by little and now have 5,000 metres of growing space. We were very fortunate to have some good mentors along the way who coached us with the best way to grow orchids.”

Kane and Gail have spent many years cultivating and improving varieties to expand their personal collection. “From tissue stock, it takes five years to full production. We now have our own varieties and sell to New Zealand florists as well as export. Cultivating our own breeds has kept our passion and interest alive. We are always trying to improve what we have, and production is key. “We have an automated irrigation system and vents to keep growing conditions at a premium. “We really pay attention to detail, and our business has been good to us. Plants need to be kept healthy and the humidity

controlled. High humidity and wet days can affect the flower quality. In winter, we babysit the flowers 24/7, especially in wet weather, because the nursery is like a lung and breathes. The hot air rises and the top vent opens to let it exhale the moisture. “Our cropping begins in March when we start tying up the little spikes and ensure they are nice and straight for growth. Kane begins harvesting the stems after approximately 8 to 12 weeks using a monorail system. “Our staff grade and pack the flowers. Each night the freshly picked product is sent to Auckland, where they either go to the exporter or the florists. “The bonus with orchids is that the stems can last up to eight weeks. We have developed late season reds and oranges and early blooming green or white with a red lip. We have specifically bred certain lines for early or late flowering. “We love everything about the flowers, you don’t get tired of them, and we are eternally optimistic that every year will be better. Like children, they all grow differently. “Some grow nice and straight and are easy, and others are demanding, and you have to give them extra attention every week to straighten them up and stop them kinking. It is usually because they are so productive that they need the extra tweak. “We have more than 50 varieties, and every one is different. Some are bushy, and some have shorter leaves with flowers easy to see on the plant. There is nothing better than having a variety that you have bred that the market absolutely loves.”

Help for osteoarthritis — cartilage by John Arts

In theory, osteoarthritis is one of the simplest diseases. For years we thought that cartilage in our joints just wore away over time. We now know that OA is a complex disease where the processes that reduce cartilage are affected by genetics, past joint trauma and nutrition, especially levels of important antioxidants. Cartilage is different from other tissue types. It has no nerve or blood supply, and it appears as lifeless tissue. Cartilage is dynamic tissue: a matrix of proteins (collagen and elastin), chondroitin sulphate, water and living cells called chondrocytes. Research shows that the health of chondrocytes is central to the development of OA. Each chondrocyte looks after a small patch of cartilage, repairing damage by secreting new cartilage matrix where needed. The problem is when chondrocytes are damaged or die. This means that the cell can no longer maintain cartilage. Eventually, the cartilage thins, leading to a painful bone on bone scenario.

I use a two-pronged approach to supporting cartilage. Firstly, we add compounds, especially chondroitin, that can support and repair cartilage. Secondly, we add curcumin from turmeric and omega-3 fish oil to reduce inflammation. Often the inflammation causes more pain and mobility loss than the actual cartilage damage. Thirdly, we add the antioxidants that protect chondrocyte cells from further damage. One of the most annoying and painful arthritic joints are small hand joints. While nutritional therapy can help, these are among the slowest joints to respond. It seems counterintuitive, but big weight-bearing joints, especially knees, tend to respond faster. I have been helping someone with OA in their base thumb joint at the wrist. Within three months, the pain had reduced, and now, after a year, the discomfort is really minor only when under heavy use.

Darling Group managing director Andrew Darling says Just Avocados and Zeafruit, which markets 25% of avocados supplied to the domestic market, have a long-standing relationship. “Early in the development of Just Avocados, we recognised our marketing expertise lay in the export sector while ownership in Zeafruit gave us the ability to partner more closely with their domestic market capability. In 2015, Darling Group had the opportunity to invest in Zeafruit. “We purchased 33% of the company initially, then increased that to 50%

before making this final step in June this year.” The Darling Group team, comprised of local businesses Just Avocados and Avoworks, as well as Brisbane-based JH Leavy, is excited to welcome the team from Zeafruit into their family of horticulture businesses. “We see a lot of synergies between our businesses and efficiencies that can be made in our processes going forward,” says Andrew. “Just Avocados has built up a great relationship with Zeafruit over the last seven years.

“The acquisition of the final 50% allows us to align even more closely to ensure value is captured and fruit is placed into the markets that are optimal for the grower.” For Zeafruit’s clients and staff, it is business as usual with some exciting advantages for the team. “Previous managing director of Zeafruit, Glen Dunseath, who will continue to head up the Zeafruit business as CEO, says being part of a wider team will bring opportunities across a larger range of activities and better career pathways for their staff.

Saving time and money Do it yourself, aka DIY, is the Kiwi benchmark when it comes to home improvements and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has released learning modules to help those who are new to the building code and carrying out work in the building and construction sector. Homeowners are now saving up to $18 million a year. The number of consents has reduced by about 9,000 if lodged separately for new types of building work that no longer requires building consent. Additional building consent exemptions have been added to the Building Act. Consents are no longer needed for a number of new or expanded types of lowrisk work, like sleep-outs, sheds, carports, outdoor fireplaces and ground-mounted solar panels. The new exemptions will save time and money by not having to go to their

local council for consent. This reduction in building consents allows councils to focus on work that is higher-risk, helping to boost productivity. The new exemptions add to the work that can already be done without building consent, outlined in Schedule 1 of the Building Act. Some can be done without the help of a professional, while others require the involvement of a Chartered Professional Engineer or Licensed Building Practitioner. Any issues related to planning or resource management or any projects with district planning implications will still need to be discussed with your local council. Before carrying out exempt work, it’s important you follow the MBIE guidance correctly. If you are unsure what legislation may apply and what the requirements are, it’s best to consult a professional. Singlestorey pole sheds or hay barns in a rural

After careful consideration, NRC decided to instead approve a $6 million grant in 2023/24, subject to a suite of conditions being met. These include ongoing financial commitment from Whangārei Penny Smart — Northland Regional Council chair District Council and Crown infrastructure partners and detailed design and costings being provided. Chair Penny Smart says under the Long Term Plan 2021–2031 the council will spend more than $243 million with significant boosts to biosecurity, managing water catchments, and building resilience to climate change. “We’ve developed this plan in response to the views of our communities, legislative changes from the central government, and work we know needs to be done. It’s been a delicate balancing act, and we are confident that we’ve settled on the best combination of work programmes to serve Northland’s diverse needs.” NRC will spend $5.63 million over the next three years on science, planning and compliance to address water health. A further $6.18 million, which is $907,000 more than proposed, will be spent for the same period on managing water catchments. It includes significant new funding for the Kaipara Moana Remediation programme, support for farm planning, and an extra boost for the council’s environmental fund. Another $3.28 million will be spent for three years on land-based biosecurity, $771,000 more than proposed, $627,000 on biodiversity and $2.16 million on climate change initiatives. With some of the new spend able to be covered by increases in council’s investment revenue overall, the council’s rates bills will increase 21% in year one of the Long Term Plan, an average increase of about $83 for each ratepayer. It will be followed by increases of 14% in year two and 9% in year three. Councillors collectively believe the increase is necessary for Northland to stay strong and continue growing in changing times, says Chair Smart. “We weighed up the impact of this cost on ratepayers carefully, but ultimately, we know that we need to do this work now in order to create a healthy environment, strong economy and resilient communities.” During an official consultation period, staff and councillors ran seven Have Your Say events around the region. The council received 171 submissions on its LTP consultation document. “In a time when many other plans were also out

Your rights come first

Choosing a professional tradesperson is all about peace of mind, and the law surrounding what a competent tradie should provide hinges on them being educated and qualified. Here’s what the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) says about the levels of expertise and care a tradesperson should display when working on your project. You’re covered for these whether there’s a written contract or not. Remember, most of the time, you can spot ‘cowboys’ a mile away as they won’t be affiliated with the oversight body for their trade and might be cagey about sharing their qualifications. For example, they may not have a card identifying them as a proper plumber or a logo on their ute identifying them as a Licensed Building Practitioner if they’re not legitimate. The CGA says that no matter who you hire, you’re entitled

to expect five things. The first is called reasonable skill. It means that the job must be at least as good as the work of a competent person with average skills and experience for that type of work. That average is determined by the standards set down by each trade’s governing body or as defined in the apprenticeship course for learning the trade. The second is called reasonable care. It means that care and attention to details have been used. An otherwise technically competent job might not pass the ‘reasonable care’ test if it’s been finished off in a sloppy, unsightly or messy fashion. The third key part of the CGA says that a

job must be fit for use — that it does what you need it to do. A plumber who installs a non-flushing toilet has not made it fit for use; neither has an electrician who installs an air conditioner that doesn’t heat or cool. The most important thing to note here is that for all of these factors, there’s no defence of lack of competence. If a tradesperson warns you in advance that they can’t guarantee reasonable skill, reasonable care or fitness for use as they are ‘not very good’ at a particular

kind of job, it’s best to not hire them. Real professionals know their stuff under the CGA. Fourth and fifth, even if there’s no quote or timeframe in place when the work starts, you’re entitled to have your job completed in a reasonable time and for a reasonable cost. Reasonable time is judged on the time it takes a competent person who works in that type of job to complete the task, while a reasonable cost is an average of what other similar tradespeople charge in your area.

FENCING TRADE DAY Fences reduce stock movement Using a back fence and portable trough is one suggestion DairyNZ recommends to help reduce cow walking distance, limiting soil damage through unnecessary stock movement.

When back fencing, allow stock to have sufficient room to rest in a dry area during winter

Ensuring stock has access to fresh, clean water is a vital part of farming, no matter what animals you have in your care. Each cow will need at least 45 litres of water each day during winter and up to 75 litres in hotter months. Ensure that the water is easily accessible to reduce energy output used walking to a trough and reduce the risk of a cow choosing to drink from a dirty puddle. During extremes in temperature, animals use more energy to either cool

down or stay warm. As a result, they will drink more water to stay hydrated. To control this increased need for water, it is a good idea to use field shelters. A portable trough set up using flexible garden hose for ease of shifting is one way to provide water in a dry area of the paddock during winter. Some farmers use a portable trough with click-in water fittings and non-return valves. It is so easy to shift that the team does it daily. This way, they know that their cattle always have fresh water nearby.

CONTRACT FENCING

PETER BLACKWELL 021 295 9647

Set up the paddock early, while the soil is drier, to save time in winter. If you are laying out baleage, remember to keep bales out of swales and lowerlying areas of the paddock and away from waterways. No one knows your cows like you, and it is advisable to check them at the grazier’s place at least once every week. With back fences, ensure you allow cows to have sufficient room between the back fence and crop fence. Using a back fence reduces the animals’ amount of walking, which lessens the damage to soil caused by treading the soil. Treading damage seals the soil surface, resulting in more water moving across the soil (run-off).

• • • •

It increases the loss of soil and nutrients. For best results, it is recommended to move the back fence and portable trough at least weekly. By protecting the ground behind a back fence, it can be used as contingency planning for when animals need a drier place to lie down and rest. Giving animals space in the break means they can choose where to lie and where to take shelter, something that is important to cows. Including good management practices like a back fence and portable troughs in your plan ensures animals and the environment are protected. Decide with your team where they will be placed in the paddock and how often they will be shifted.

We service as far south as Warkworth and north up to the Brynderwyns and surrounding areas including Maungaturoto and Mangawhai,” says Shane. “Our background is dairy farming. We spent 25 years milking cows, and when we retired from that, we decided to do something different while keeping in the rural scene. “We came up with Call A Farmer, and within our services, we focus on fencing and spraying. We are registered chemical applicators for spraying pastures, crops, gorse, blackberry and other pest plants for farmers and lifestyle block owners. “With fencing, we do everything from rural to residential. We specialise in subdivisions and design and make all our own timber gates. We complete speciality entrance ways, build standard post, wire and batten, and electric stock fences. We do post and rail and top-end interlock style fencing and stockyards

as well.” Call A Farmer fencing and vegetation control can also ram house piles in for new builds. “Our emphasis has always been topend quality, and we aim to be amongst the best. Hence, we are one of only 35 certified fencing companies across New Zealand. “Being certified is like being a master builder, and we need to meet qualification criteria. Our skills are assessed, and we are audited and have full health, safety and employment requirements. “Our business gets evaluated from client testimonials as well to validate our work. “The bottom line for our clients is they can expect a job that is a top-end job. We guarantee the quality of our workmanship, and all we do is insured. “We are members of the Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand (FCNZ). “The association is encouraging more fencers to become certified members. If

you hire a certified fencer, you know you are going to get a good job. We are a family-owned business and are continuing to aim to grow and train our staff who are all members of Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand. “Angelina runs the office and does all the important things like liaising with customers, organising supplies, keeping up with health and safety and all the other things an office manager does. “Shane and Nick are on the tools and work with our staff to ensure the finished job is top-quality and finished in a timely manner. “In our downtime, Nick and Shane enjoy fishing, Nick enjoys flying microlight aircraft and spending time with family is important to us all. With our 25 years of milking cows, we know how important it is for everyone to have a break. “For all your fencing requirements, call us at Call A Farmer — feel free to check out our Facebook page too. ADVERTORIAL

Planning a new cowshed? by Michael Prestidge | Nevada Effluent Management Specialist

Building a new cowshed creates some big opportunities to maximise efficiencies around the farm. Fences will likely be moved, and paddock shapes may change. It's a great time to revamp your effluent system so it’s future-proofed, council compliant and suits the functioning of your operations. Some of the things to consider include: Enlisting Help This project is a big investment and something you want to get right the first time. Enlisting the help of an accredited dairy effluent system designer is highly recommended. They can look at your farm’s characteristics and operations, make calculations, and provide recommendations on the best system to suit your needs. Site Placement Best practice is to place the cowshed on slightly elevated ground so that gravity can be used for effluent to flow into your storage. Not only is this the most efficient method for collecting effluent, but it means you are not reliant on pumps or electricity. Processing For most dairy farms, effluent requires very little processing. Flood wash can still be used without solids separation. Installing a large stone trap is recommended to remove heavy solids like stones and silt. Your stone trap needs to be big enough to cope with the sudden deluge from flood washing. It’s also important to position the inlets and outlets correctly to work effectively. Storage HDPE lined effluent ponds are the best option where viable. They are the most cost-effective and widely used form of wastewater containment. They can be customised to suit the different

characteristics of each site. When it comes to size, bigger is always better. You want to have plenty of storage to cover council compliance, additional effluent volumes during wet seasons or unusual weather events, and potential increases in cow numbers. Consider any possible future changes such as wintermilking or adding a feed pad as this will influence the size. Equipment Stirring/Mixing: thoroughly mixing the effluent before pumping is essential to ensure all the nutrients are utilised, but also to prolong the life of your pump. If electricity is available, a shore mounted electric stirrer is the safest, most cost-effective option, requiring minimal labour. PTO tractor-driven stirrers can be ideal for multi-farms and contractors, hard to reach storage or where electricity is not available. Pumps Electric is again the recommended option, being easy to automate with much lower running costs than diesel or PTO driven pumps. Modern shore mounted progressive cavity (PC) pumps provide the best performance in safety, reliability and consistency for use with in-ground systems and most effluent irrigators. Spreading Your choice of spreading system will depend on the new paddock layout, availability of labour, and how the farm operates. Underground systems with

travelling irrigators are the least labour intensive option and ideal for long regular-shaped paddocks. However, an underground system alone will limit your spreading area. A slurry tanker is less labour intensive than many farmers think and is a good option for being able to spread when and where required. It can also be used for cleaning out the stone trap. Alternatively, an umbilical drag hose system with RainWave™ applicator is ideal for spreading across large areas and dropping pond levels fast.

New calculator for farmers A new free calculator to help sheep, beef and deer farmers calculate their greenhouse gas emissions and sequestration is now available. Beef + Lamb New Zealand has developed the calculator with input from farmers and meat processing companies as part of the red meat sector’s contribution to helping meet New Zealand’s climate change commitments. “We are committed to equipping farmers to know their numbers and have a written plan to manage emissions,” says B+LNZ chief executive Sam McIvor. “This will help farmers build resilient, future-proofed businesses, provide evidence to tell our farmer story and product story, and give our customers and the public confidence that we are taking responsible action on climate change.” The B+LNZ GHG Calculator is free and easy to use. It takes information about a farm and stock numbers and applies science and data about average emissions at national, regional and farm system level to calculate on-farm emissions and sequestration. There is a detailed user guide online, and B+LNZ will be helping farmers do their calculations as part of B+LNZ workshops. B+LNZ is also working with meat processors, farm advisers, accountants and others to share information about the calculator and how to use it. “Supporting farmers to know their numbers is part of the He Waka Eke

Noa programme, which is developing a practical framework to measure and manage emissions at farm level and recognise sequestration,” says Sam McIvor. “Farmers must be recognised for the good work they are doing on-farm.” Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva is strongly encouraging farmers to use the calculator. “We support the He Waka Eke Noa programme because we believe that farmers are best placed to measure and manage their emissions. Knowing and managing farm GHG emissions is critical for our future as a trusted provider of sustainable food. “We have to front-foot this and show to the New Zealand public and our customers that we are serious about managing our impact on the climate.” The calculator has been independently assessed as meeting the requirements for calculating emissions under the He Waka Eke Noa programme. “While farmers can choose from a number of GHG calculators, the advantages of the B+LNZ tool are that it’s free and easy to use. The calculator has been funded by the Red Meat Profit Partnership. The calculator is available through the B+LNZ website. Farmers will

Sam McIvor Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive

log in so that their data is securely saved, and they can add information over time.” B+LNZ will report on the number of farmers using the calculator as part of its industry commitments but will not report on any individual farm’s GHG emissions total. B+LNZ’s GHG Calculator is endorsed by the Meat Industry Association, AFFCO

New Zealand, Alliance Group, ANZCO Foods, Blue Sky Meats, Greenlea Premier Meats, Ovation New Zealand, Progressive Meats, Silver Fern Farms, Taylor Preston, Te Kuiti Meats, Universal Beef Packers and Wilson Hellaby NZ. WHEELS

Scaling new heights by Andy Bryenton

In an era when we’re all watching our emissions and carbon footprint, big displacement and massive size are both seen as motoring sins. What to do, then, if you’re legitimately in need of a seven-seater SUV? For some, having such a machine in the garage means the ability to carpool several families worth of children to school, taking cars off the road. For others, it means the ability to tow a boat or caravan for a local holiday, saving jet fuel. Yet more families do live in the countryside, with horrible rugged roads to traverse, big items to carry, lots of relatives on one property and a dog or two as well. Rather than try to pry all of the passengers in with a shoehorn and give up on camping or fishing, you could try out Ford’s answer to the balance between power and efficiency, the Everest Sport. Equipped with the same BiTurbo engine as the Ranger FX4, it’s amazing how much you can achieve with just two litres of displacement. Not so long ago, a two-litre mill was the preserve of mid-level light sports cars, a step down from the thumping straight sixes and V8s of the big boys. Still, Ford has come a long way in the past few years when it comes to wringing power from small displacement blocks. The one-litre Ecoboost won so many trophies that you could have forged an old-fashioned V8 by melting them down.

Ford Everest Sport — this big spacious 4x4 features fuel economy that’s three times better than an equivalent machine in the mid-1990s and lower emissions than some family-sized cars in 2021

When they won Le Mans the first time, it was with 4.9 litres of clout situated behind Mr McLaren. Recently, they blitzed the same race with a 3.5 litre V6, which made more horsepower than the original. So, the good news is that the Everest’s BiTurbo produces less carbon and gets better fuel economy than some sedans and station wagons out there today. It still manages to fit seven proper-sized people, a massive suite of infotainment

and computerised safety wizardry, and offer 3,100 kilograms of towing capacity, plus a range of significantly more than 1,000 kilometres for each tank of diesel. One day batteries may be able to deliver this, in the same way, that one day medicine might be able to make me thin and handsome on a diet of bacon and pies. Until then, the Everest Sport or its limited-edition brother, the Basecamp

Edition, which has some nice stylistic tweaks and a massive snorkel, might do. They offer the appeal of the Ford Ranger with the capacity of a true seven-seater, a tow bar, and no range anxiety even if you’re trekking in the actual wilderness. If anyone says you’re not making ecological progress, remind them that a similar machine in 1994 got 21 litres for every 100 kilometres; the Everest sport gets seven.

Crisis for classics looming

WHEELS

NORTHERN FARMING lIFESTylES

July 2021

31

by Andy Bryenton

The barns and sheds of rural New Zealand house a great selection of classic cars and motorcycles; restored and beloved family heirlooms or passion projects providing a break from farming labour. From vintage cars to hot rods, weekend cruisers that replace the ute for special occasions and motorbikes to get out and ride in the great Kiwi country scenery, they’re all here. However, perhaps not for long. As part of the programme to electrify the New Zealand road fleet, we’ve recently been bombarded with propaganda stating that the end of internal combustion is coming in just over a decade. In a justifiable response to a central government move that could put thousands of internal combustion mechanics out of work, the Motor Trade Association has released its ideas to mitigate what they see as an overly ambitious fast shift to EVs. It put forward three core areas to be added to any future legislation. Firstly, to ‘look at all technologies that promote lower emissions and not put Kiwis at risk or leave them isolated.’ Secondly, that ‘all vehicles should have their emissions tested as part of their regular maintenance.’ Finally, ‘we need a plan that also deals with how we dispose

of these vehicles to make room for a cleaner future.’ While we can all agree that clapped out old daily drivers should be replaced by efficient new hybrids or EVs as soon as fiscally possible, points two and three would kneecap the classic and vintage culture, as older cars and bikes were not built to pass modern emissions tests. To be magnanimous, it’s likely that the MTA was not thinking of their thousands of classic collector customers, who make the restoration and preservation of heritage machines a multimillion-dollar industry. They’ll have to, and so will the central government. We urgently need discussion of a law to protect classic vehicles from overzealous legislation and the scrap heap. Some counties offer a classic registration that allows for a single warrant of fitness each year with a more lenient emissions test to reflect the machine’s age. It must still be properly maintained and tuned and must not be driven more than 5,000 kilometres a year to qualify. That seems a fair compromise.

WHEELS

An unexpected solution by Andy Bryenton

With the push to electric vehicles underway, arguing over whether the government’s scheme is a good fit for New Zealand is less important than finding a machine that might suit the needs of the population.

for efficiency. It means that the variables which can see other EV’s range counters tumble like last week’s bubblegum pop song down the top 50 are removed; you really get what it says on the screen. MG says that the ZS can be recharged to 80% capacity in 45 minutes or sip power overnight for a seven-hour charge. On a trip to Auckland with a charge stop while shopping, that means more than 450km back to back, enough to comfortably encompass the highway and some running around in the city too. At $49,000, give or take, it’s a fair price, and you can likely knock around $8,000 off that for the government’s subsidy. However, it might not do everything you need in the countryside; like almost

all EVs, it’s not meant to tow a trailer, ever, and it’s not a real mud-crawling 4x4 despite the looks. Farmers are still going to prefer something like the Ranger. On that note, it’s worth a chuckle that buying a vehicle to do a job seems to let the government ignore eco concerns. The new fleet of Skoda police cars potentially use more petrol and emit more carbon than a Ford Ranger FX4 BiTurbo. We’d never accuse the boys in blue of buying a powerful station wagon for reasons of masculine posturing. They need to go fast to catch criminals, and carry lots of gear. In this debate about EVs and their future let’s give tradies and farmers the same level of respect.

MG-ZS delivers a good balance of electric range and power, space and price, making it a practical EV option that’s not just for the inner city

In between the politics and the needless bashing of the poor old Ford Ranger, there’s sense in looking ahead to a future when electricity powers our road fleet. Therefore, we searched the list of electric vehicles for one that balances range, cost, practicality and ease of recharging and came up with the same answer as Autocar magazine when it chose the electric car of the year. It’s a surprise because it’s an MG. Older motorists will recall that this is a company famous for making tiny little sports cars with the tendency to overheat but with

so much charm and verve that it was forgivable. Apparently, the MG name was snapped up by a Chinese mega-factory when the Range Rover brand parted ways with its sportscar division. Like LDV, the once British badge has risen again in the east, and it’s come back strong. MG now offers a range of vehicles, including a plug-in hybrid. The attentiongetter is their MGZS electric five-door SUV, which delivers crisp acceleration, lots of space, 353nM of torque and a range of 263km between charges. The clever part is that MG cools their lithium-ion batteries

WHEELS

Return of the king

by Andy Bryenton

The Honda Super Cub might be the most popular vehicle ever made. From 1958 to the dawn of the new millennium, it was a staple of transport worldwide. Now it’s back. Millions were made, and whole cities run on Cub power; stand downtown anywhere in Vietnam, and the sound of those little horizontal single-piston engines fills the air. The Cub returned in a new form recently, as endearingly retrochic as the new Mini, the Fiat 500 Abarth or the timeless Royal Enfield motorbike. It was an immediate success. That meant it was time for Honda engineers to revive another hit from the classics collection; the CT125 Hunter Cub. People in New Zealand might remember the CT110, the classic ‘postie bike’ that mastered rural delivery runs through decades of use. However, the new CT125 is a slightly different beast. Under its retro skin lurks a suite of new improvements that deliver more throttle response, a jaunty exhaust note and added stability. It’s also great for use on the farm. The CT125 reverses the ‘bigger is better’ ethos that’s seen some quads become the size of that aforementioned Fiat 500, and delivers a small, fuel-sipping machine that’s remarkable for just what it can handle. Looking around the world, it shouldn’t be a huge surprise. Cub variants of lesser provenance are used daily in the developing world to fill the roles of everything from utes to tractors.

Honda’s new CT125 is based on an old, classic concept; it’s a variant of the most popular bike on Earth, the redoubtable Super Cub

One traveller in Cambodia even reports two of the little bikes lashed together with bamboo poles, commanded by two riders, carrying an old iron clawfoot bathtub full of fish on ice. If the Cub can handle that, then zipping about the races and paddocks is no hassle at all. Lightweight counts for a lot, and while the CT125 may not look like a tall, knobbly-tyred mud monster,

it’s a tenacious little terrier of a thing by all accounts. Added to this, it’s bound to put a smile on your face, which is not something one can often say about a consummate piece of agricultural machinery. Honda may have brought back the Cub in its Hunter form due to demand for its charmingly retro looks, but it’s stood the test of time for a reason.
