The council’s Geographic Information System manager Gail Yearbury-Murphy was named GIS Professional of the Year, Geospatial Systems analyst Janelle Palmer won the GIS Project of the Year and council’s records manager Sarah Botur, won the IRM Professional Development Award. Council chairman, Bill Shepherd, says he couldn’t be prouder of the trio, whose success is a fantastic result. “It’s a real thrill for everyone involved to see Northlanders being recognised for their hard work by their peers at a national level. Good records are an integral part of the local authority sector, and Ms Botur and her colleagues play a key role in the council being able to do its job efficiently and well.” Similarly, the council had invested heavily to boost its regional GIS capacity, and the awards recognised both the current strength of Northland’s GIS capability and the field’s increasing importance to the council in its day-today work.

“We have invested quite strategically in GIS capability, both at a staffing and systems level in recent years, recognising this area’s growing importance to both council and the wider community. “Like most regional councils, water quality is a primary focus for the NRC. One important tool that assists in the management of our water is a water allocation tool; a GIS Model used to calculate the level of allocation and availability of ground and surface water in Northland.” The tool — the basis of Ms Palmer’s winning project entry — gives the council insight into how water is allocated in Northland, including which rivers and aquifers are under pressure, and consequently where restrictions may be needed. “The tool was recently significantly extended, with increased level of detail and accuracy considerably improving its value for decision-making, resourcing, and planning. It also provides a robust dataset that can be presented to the public.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES June 2018

Awanui flood scheme a ‘game changer’ The largest construction project ever undertaken by the Northland Regional Council — a $15 million flood scheme upgrade massively boosting flood protection in and around Kaitaia should be under way within two years. The new seven-year Awanui scheme project is one of the crucial projects at the heart of the council’s new Long Term Plan 2018–2028. Te Hiku constituency representative, Mike Finlayson, says the scheme is designed to protect urban Kaitaia in a ‘once-in-a-century’ type flood event and a one-in-twenty-year event in surrounding rural areas and will be a ‘game changer’ for the Far North town. “Flood risks will be mitigated via a combination of improvements to stabilise stopbanks in the area, plus diversion of flow and works to mitigate the effect of the large, slow-moving Bell’s Hill slip falling into the nearby Awanui River and causing flooding. “Without the protection, this scheme should give us, a flood of that one-in100-year magnitude in urban Kaitaia could cause tens of millions of dollars in damage and potentially put lives at risk. The works will be paid for in a two-

pronged funding approach, 30 per cent will be funded via a 60 per cent increase to the existing targeted Awanui River Management Rate, bringing in an extra $442,000 annually. The remaining 70 per cent will be funded by ratepayers regionwide via a new regional flood infrastructure rate consulted on through the LTP process. The millions of dollars’ worth of major new flood works will be repaid over 60 years. It is just one of a raft of new initiatives tackling water, pests and flood infrastructure councillors have agreed to as part of the 10-year plan. The works will be carried out over several years from 2020 to 2027. Project design and consent work — originally planned to begin in 2023 will now happen this year, with construction due to start late next year. The Panguru work would involve building stopbanks and widening a stream channel to increase its capacity during floods.

POUTO FARMERS WIN

by Ann van Engelen

Pouto farmers Dan and Gina Duncan have won the prestigious 2018 New Zealand Share Farmers of the Year competition, bringing the cup back to Kaipara and Northland for the first time in 22 years.

T

he couple moved from Tokoroa to Pouto, on the Kaipara Harbour in 2016 seeking a better future and are share milking 1,020 cows on the 460ha Pouto Topu A Trust farms property. “We are proud to get Northland on the national cup again, and it is cool doing it from Pouto — somewhere that a lot of people don't know exists,” said Dan. “Since our move, our employers have been extremely supportive of our family, and the community has been incredible. We love having the ocean on our doorstep. The lifestyle and community are incredibly different to Waikato, it is a good change, and we are loving it here,” said Dan.

“We never thought we were in the running at a national level but decided to give the competition a try. I think our point of difference was farming in an area that isn’t very well-known in the dairy industry.” Since arriving on the Kaipara farm, they have been finishing projects the previous share milker began. “We have been dealing with attention to detail, renewing fencing, improving water systems and making management changes, which have worked well for our challenging property. “We have five staff members — Pouto Topu A farms are two adjoining farms separated by a big gully, so the cows go through two sheds. are made with risk management and knowing summer can be very dry. We calve early, have doubled the summer cropping and implemented once a day milking to preserve the condition of our herd when things get challenging. “I grew up on a dairy farm, and when we decided to change career we aligned ourselves with successful farmers, and it has paid off, and we have continued to study through Primary ITO and Dairy Production Systems. “The trustees are awesome and have understood the importance of our decisions, especially when we direct where funding is needed — we couldn’t ask for anything more from them.” The Duncans are milking 1,020 cows on the 460ha property. Both 32-year-olds, hold a bachelor of applied sciences majoring in rural valuation and management, with Dan holding a double major including agriculture. Gina says living remotely does have its challenges and they have become more organised in coordinating trips to town and making temporary fixes and repairs. Share Farmer head judge Kevin McKinley, from DairyNZ, said the judges travelled from one end of the country to the other and met a stunning group of people excelling within the industry. “We met people who genuinely value other people and how they can help them progress through the industry. They realise you have to look after staff and value them if you want to keep them. “Dan and Gina can be summed up in three words — passionate, professional and committed. They are a friendly, outgoing couple who are working on an exceptionally challenging farm. “They epitomise living the dream. They left secure jobs as registered valuers and made the career change to dairy farming, and they are excelling at it. They are the complete package. “Nothing has come easy for them; they

5

The couple have been making significant management changes and improving the property in general

have had to work hard. When they first began their career, they sought out employers that they thought would be good mentors and role models for them. They have looked for opportunities where people are considered important, and they have clear, realistic but challenging goals and gave an outstanding presentation which flowed and kept the judges fully engaged.” Dan and Gina had written a long-term plan on future strategies to improve the property, which they presented to the farm owners. They called it the Farm Prosperity Report, and it encompassed sustainability strategies and solutions to drive the property forward. A good example of their pasture management is a comparison report on what quantities a cow would need to eat in Kikuyu grass versus Rye grass to receive enough energy to make milk. “It just made it real. They had calculated

all their KPIs of their pasture, and they were benchmarking with the rest of Northland and picked appropriate benchmarks to compare themselves with,” said Kevin. “They have a good work-life balance, they work hard but find the time to pursue interests off-farm such as sport and time with family and friends. BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

The success of Walter and Maria Van Lier’s flower growing adventure began in 1951 when they arrived from Holland to begin a new life.

T

he couple originally started growing potatoes in 1952 and have become nationwide rose suppliers known as Van Lier Nurseries where the family produce some of New Zealand’s finest rose blooms. “Continuing in the traditions Walter and Maria, fondly called Opa and Oma, their son Theo and grandson Harry now run the company that annually grows more than 1.6 million rose stems,” says business manager Joanne Hurley. “Carnations were the first cut flower, Opa grew and in 1974 he saw the romantic necessity for long stem roses, and by the 1980s they were the main component of the business. VLN has 14,000sqm of glasshouse

planted with more than 35 rose varieties. They also produce other cut flowers — Alstroemeria, Gypsophilia, Limonium, Hellebores and Parzival. “Recently we built a 2,000sqm glass house and shed for propagation. We propagate plants for ourselves and other cut flower growers and are the sole provider of carnation cuttings in New Zealand. They also grow the houseplant Zanzibar Gem and would like to introduce others to the range. A gas-fueled boiler heats water, which is pumped through the pipes to keep the glasshouse heated. Fifteen micro and macronutrients are delivered through the irrigation system to produce topquality flowers.

Summer roses are harvested three times daily during peak harvest to ensure that the flowers are consistently picked at the right stage of opening. Several quality checks are made for straightness and strength, damage, pests or disease and head tightness. “When I first joined VLN 11 years ago the immediate challenge was to improve the company’s profitability. In recent years we have been able to reinvest back into the business and take advantage of new technologies to improve productivity. It is rewarding to see the family enjoy the fruit of their labour,” says Joanne. “To keep up to date we look at the trends and discuss with our florists what they require annually.” The Van Lier staff travel to growing trials in Europe to choose their rose varieties. “Bringing new stock into New Zealand is a lengthy and costly process. We apply for permits and go through at least a six-month quarantine process, rigorous testing and cull of the varieties that were initially imported.” Fifty plants of each selected variety are then made and planted in the trial area. “We hold open days showcasing these and send samples to florists for their feedback. Once a variety is chosen as a production plant, it takes 12–18 months for it to mature to full production. Our flowers have not travelled across the world and are grown with minimum pesticides. “We have the largest range of cut rose varieties in the country including

the exclusive David Austin Roses — he is a world-famous English rose grower. “David wanted to create a cut cultivated rose and nearly bankrupt himself in his achievement. The Patience has a dense centre that is fragrant and is popular as a wedding flower. Another favourite rose is Avalanche, from a Dutch breeder and Kim Kardashian used them at her wedding.” Cut cultivation roses have different characteristics to outdoor rose bushes and breeders invest heavily in developing new varieties. “They don't have the fragrance because the focus is about productivity and stem quantity. Florists need a long vase life, good stem length and flower shape, and few thorns — all important factors when producing floral art designs and wedding bouquets.” Joanne says rose growing is in the blood and Harry will tell you he is a ‘rose grower’ not just a business owner. “Harry loved completing his internship in Europe and bringing the innovations back here. He is proud of his rose growing abilities. “It is fulfilling and gratifying to provide top quality flowers to people. My favourite is Peach Avalanche — I love the colour and the fact it has no thorns — its vase life is up to three weeks, and it holds its bloom. “This is a typical small family business carrying on a passion with a green thumb. It is a big achievement to remain sustainable over three generations particularly given that the core product is a discretionary spend — you don’t have to have cut flowers to

7

Matt inspects and picks rose blooms ready to be sent for processing stay alive. They definitely bring a lot of pleasure though. “Looking for ways to be innovative is a credit to Opa’s legacy, and Harry and Theo are able to pass on the generational success. Theo’s other son Steffan works in the business and was recently involved in setting the bench system in the new propagation house. “Opa was still coming up to the nursery, and before he died in 2016,

Theo would put Opa’s scooter into the covered trailer and Opa would inspect the stock. We had a problem with hollow stem once, and Opa knew immediately it was a copper deficiency. He certainly passed on his knowledge, and it is appreciated today and will be for generations to come.” The Van Liers sell their products to florists, other growers, and wholesalers throughout the country.

n August last year 22-year-old Te Hana woman, Molly Dagger, travelled to Disney World in Florida as part of an international cultural exchange, where she worked as a lifeguard at one of the resorts until January 2018. She remembers seeing Mickey Mouse turn up carrying a box and giving each exchange student a set of iconic mouse ears and a name tag on her first day. “We got to travel through underground tunnels to get to the famous Magic Kingdom theme park.” The entertainment complex covers

11,000 hectares, which is an area the size of Hamilton. “It’s absolutely ginormous. It has four theme parks, two water parks, something like 27 themed resort hotels and several golf courses.” She said the annual cultural exchange programme was a life-changing experience and participants live in four different apartment complexes. “I made friends from all over the world. It helped push me out of my comfort zone and grow as a person.” Molly has a bachelor of communications

The couple live on a dairy farm at Te Hana near Wellsford, where Kurtis manages 640 cows. “I thought it would be good for him, and then I ended up joining as well,” she said. Since returning home, the 22-yearold has had a surprise win, which has propelled her into the grand final of a stock judging competition. She enjoys “giving things a go” and entered a stock judging competition at the Northern Field Days in Dargaville. “I just can’t believe it, I’m a townie,” said Molly who works as a part-time promotions assistant. She placed first and secured a spot in the national final in Invercargill in July. Interviews for the next cultural exchange intake are being held in Australia and New Zealand during April and May. New Zealand Young Farmers is a non-profit social network for youth which develops the leadership and personal skills through participation and achievement. There are over 70 clubs situated around New Zealand, and each club has its own identity and community spirit, backed by the national organisation. Clubs aim to foster friendships for life, enable young people to network with like-minded individuals and develop their personal and practical skills by organising and participating in meetings, events, social activities and competitions.

WHY FASTBRACES?

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost.

Crown

A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth.

WHY NOT?

Abutment

Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

FASTBRACES ARE FASTER, CHEAPER & LESS PAINFUL THAN TRADITIONAL BRACES!

Implant

Removable implant supported over-denture

All technology has improved. Cars today are faster, cheaper and safer – and braces have come a long way too! Fastbraces have been designed to be used by general dentists, and are faster, cheaper, and often less painful than traditional braces. ( You may not even have to have any teeth extracted!) The best thing? Fastbraces straighten teeth in as little as 4 months to a year! NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

ADVERTORIAL

What causes osteoarthritis? by John Arts

Part 1 Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain. All chronic disease starts with damage to certain cell types that then damages tissue which causes the symptoms we feel. The real driver behind cartilage loss is the health of specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells secrete and repair cartilage matrix. Anything that affects chondrocyte cells could cause cartilage damage. Mechanical force (injury) can trigger an increase in free radicals, which can cause the death of chondrocytes. In some cases, it is as much about a failure of cell antioxidants defences. The problem is that chondrocytes cannot replicate. Once a chondrocyte dies, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will eventually disintegrate. The body tries to fix the problem through the process of inflammation, which is ineffective — it ends up making the problem worse. In my experience, the inflammatory part of OA causes more pain and discomfort than the actual cartilage loss. Just a note that commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication can

either cause joint pain or worsen the pain from existing arthritis. In these cases, I add a high-grade coenzyme Q10 (CoQSol) to replace that lost by the medication. Call me for details. I have many clients that are largely symptom-free despite having significant cartilage loss. I have been dealing with a couple where one has an arthritic knee while the other has OA in the spine and hip. I started them on a double dose of my joint supplement. This meant that they were initially taking 1,600mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 400mg of a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. I put both of them on a double dose of my high chondroitin/turmeric joint product, and both are much more comfortable. The sore back is much better, and the hip and knee pain have significantly reduced. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Record season for Just Avocados Record returns were presented to Just Avocados suppliers for the 2017–18 season, showing a 46% increase over results for the previous season. The specialist avocado packer and exporter highlights its fresh strategy, flexible model, and time-related incentive as drivers for the positive results. “Just Avocados offers a time premium payment, which rewards our suppliers for holding fruit from week 50 onwards, and while all returns were particularly strong, those who took advantage of the incentive received returns upwards of $40 per tray,” says GM operations and grower services, Jarrod Redwood. He says suppliers have benefitted from the unique Just Avocados model, which caters for a range of growers with a range of needs. “Our model delivers a range of returns based on decisions growers make about when they want to pick, and this is influenced by a variety of drivers for them including orchard health and revenue. We work with them to deliver the outcome that will maximise their returns and suit their personal and business goals.” A change in marketing strategy for 2017–18 meant a focus on specific markets and sales channels that targeted premium customers. Jacob Darling GM sales and marketing for Darling Group, who represents Just Avocados in export markets, says that this strategy was a significant change from historic preprogrammed sales. “We targeted Asia early in the season, holding back the majority of

crop for a high-paying post-Christmas Australian market.” Jacob says the company set goals for increasing business, volumes and values into Asia and increasing their market share in Australian retail. “The retail share of our Australian programme has significantly increased from 18% to 75% over two seasons. It’s something we have focussed on and will continue to drive into next season,” says Jacob.

Government’s approach to justice

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES June 2018

11

by Matt King, MP for Northland

National is concerned about the Ardern-Peters government going soft on crime, with statements in recent weeks clearly indicating intentions to loosen up bail, parole, and sentencing laws and to release more serious offenders back into the community. The government won’t be going ahead with the new Waikeria Prison, despite evidence we are running out of beds to accommodate a rising prison population. The government wants to reduce prison numbers by a third, but without a plan to reduce serious crime, the only way to do that will be by letting more offenders out on our streets. No government wants to build prisons. However, faced with an increase in serious crime, reality means it’s necessary to protect our communities — and that must be the priority. National responded to public safety concerns and tightened up bail laws in 2013 to make it harder for serious offenders to be granted bail. Because my early career was as a frontline policeman, I feel really strongly about people feeling safe in their homes and on the streets. We implemented the three strikes law, which provides judges with the ability to put the worst offenders away for the maximum sentence without parole on their third conviction. This

law is reserved for the most serious and recidivist offenders who shouldn’t be able to keep blowing their chances by committing more crimes against innocent New Zealanders. Moreover, Labour wants to reverse our bail law changes and get rid of the three strikes law. They’re supported by NZ First, though it has previously campaigned on introducing three strikes legislation and stiffer punishments for serious offenders. The rise in the prison population is not because of tougher bail laws or three strikes — it’s because of the actions of serious criminals who are being dealt with seriously by police and judges. Despite what the government and soft-on-crime activists might have you believe our prisoners haven’t just stolen a chocolate bar or put graffiti on a building. The truth is 98 per cent of people in our prisons are there for the most serious and violent crimes, including aggravated assaults, sexual violence and murder. These people will be let

loose in our communities if we don’t have enough capacity in our prison system with softening bail, parole and sentencing laws. The government’s headline target to reduce the prison population by 30 per cent doesn’t stack up without new initiatives or targets to reduce crime. It seems to think making it easier for offenders to get out of prison or harder to get put there in the first place is the answer. Please continue to give me your feedback on this important issue. As National leader Simon Bridges has said, the measure of success must be to reduce the number of victims, not the number of prisoners. If we can do the former, we achieve the latter. Nevertheless, this government has no plan to reduce crime. Its decision to ignore the need for a new prison and stated intention to let more prisoners out will just make New Zealanders less safe. National won’t let that happen without a fight.

Dronezup is a company all about supplying drones of various fluid capacity as a new way of accessing hard-to-reach areas for spraying and mapping. “We deal in a brand of AgDrone as an alternative method for various situations as we were having difficulty with sensitive areas on farms,” says company CEO, Jaz Gribble. “We use helicopters for spraying, and at times neighbouring properties that we work on for crops and forestry blocks have horses and the helicopters were too noisy and sending an aircraft was impractical. “With the drones, we can get a lot closer to our target with very little noise, so it made sense to adopt the drone as a new, efficient tool.” The drones are used for surveying, spraying regeneration areas and sensitive boundaries and in the aquaculture industry for feeding salmon at salmon farms. The sizes available are 10, 15 and 20 litre fluid capacities and they are

also used for applying product to moss and mould on roofs, sheds and other buildings. “They are perfect for a lifestyle block owner on a moderate to steep block that is inaccessible by ground trucks. If you have ragwort, thistle, or gorse and your land is wet the drone can quietly spray those areas without messing up your paddocks. “We have a maize contractor scanning the crop as it is planted and counting how many have grown compared to the seeds planted. We can crop count and scan for bugs and diseases which in turn mean whether it be helicopter or drone, you may only need to spray 10 per cent of the field, where currently now you spray the lot with a helicopter. “We are working with the Civil Aviation Authority at present on a model for training on the use of drones to get a solid regulation in place to avoid potential accidents. People need to realise they can’t just fly them anywhere, and they need to be aware of the laws around airports and flight paths. “They also cannot take photos on private property and into peoples’ houses or of people in public places without permission. There is a website called Airshare that has all the rules and

regulations, and this lets you know what you can and can’t do.” There are CAA laws in place and certification is required for the weight of specific sizes such as the Part 102 certification to operate a spray drone. “We believe drones will be a great resource for farmers and the future of farming. “We look forward to seeing the technology advance and how it will be a positive move for those living rurally.” For more information call Dronezup on ph 027 564 5394.

Trees programme under way

Te Uru Rakau and Ngati Hine Forestry Trust have signed a joint venture to plant and manage approximately 3,600 hectares of pine trees in the Far North. “This marks the first joint venture negotiated under the One Billion Trees programme with Ngati Hine Forestry Trust and Te Uru Rakau (Forestry New Zealand) committed to working together on this commercial venture,” says forestry minister, Shane Jones. “This will be a boost to the local economy and will provide employment opportunities and better social outcomes for the whole region. We will plant 500,000 pine trees this year, with a further two million planted over the next three years. “In addition, up to 465 hectares of manuka will be planted on Ngati Hine Forestry Trust land. At the end of two years, a substantial commercial manuka plantation will be in place with an apiculture business developed to help the trust diversify its land use. “This will provide essential work experience for young people, helping them to build a strong foundation for a forestry career.” Over two years, up to forty people will participate in the training programme,

developing the skills and qualifications they need to succeed. “We will invest $1.9 million in the manuka planting initiative, with the potential that the training programme developed could also be used in other regions nationwide, says Mr Jones. “This initiative supports the trust’s plans to establish and grow future opportunities for higher skilled and better paid-jobs in Northland. It will help create economic resilience in the region and improve the quality of their land for future generations. Associate Forestry minister, Meka Whaitiri, said the training programme that will run alongside the planting of manuka seedlings is a significant opportunity for young people to gain qualifications in the forestry sector. “We expect 20 trainees involved in the manuka planting in 2019, and another 20 in 2020, to gain level two qualifications in a reinvigorated New Zealand forestry sector. “I want to see training programmes that invest in our young people and the young at heart — that roll out across the regions to build the capacity and capability within New Zealand’s forestry

Shane Jones, Forestry minister

sector. It’s important that we build an increasingly skilled, safe and higher-paid forestry workforce, including a Maori workforce, that is able to capitalise on the opportunities the One Billion Trees planting programme will create. We must rebuild the forestry workforce across the whole supply chain, including investing in the highly skilled as well as technology and innovation. This will ensure we can increase the value of our forestry industry and our forestry products.”

About half the value comes from shipments of sawn timber, paper and other processing. Unlike the dairy industry, which exports nearly all it produces, for forestry, we use a lot in New Zealand. Most of our homes are made from wood. The billion trees which the government wants to see planted over the next ten years – plus genetic and technology gains – will see an even greater role for forestry in our economy for decades into the future. Early logging innovation at museum by Geraldine Craw, Packard Motor Museum.

As you explore the Big Back Shed at the Packard Motor Museum at Maungatapere, you will discover, nestled between an orange Allis Chalmers cultivator tractor and a green Albion stage truck, an interesting little Fordson rail tractor with a difference. The wheels have been converted to run on wooden rails. This machine is one of 37 Nattrass rail tractors produced. The New Zealand conversion of the Fordson tractor was patented in 1924 by Harold Nattrass of Wellington. Attached to the rear of the tractor was a two-axle, load-bearing driven bogie, giving eight-wheel drive, all connected by chains. The Nattrass unit was inexpensive and compact, weighing about 2.5 tons but pulling a gross weight of up to 30 tons. These tractors were produced from the mid-1920s until the end of the 1930s. Ours, with its back wheels larger than the front, was one of the later models. In the early days, logs were hauled out of the bush and taken to a nearby sawmill by bullock teams. Then came the tramway, a short railway track, built into the bush giving access to trees further from the mill. Logs were hauled to the tramway by bullocks and loaded onto bogies. From there, they were pulled along the tramway to the sawmill by horses. With the arrival of steam, larger sawmills purchased a steam locomotive such as the museum’s Dubs-040 to haul logs along steel rails, but for smaller operations, this wasn’t feasible. The

Nattrass tractor became the perfect solution for these smaller mills. The Nattrass replaced the horses, allowing sawmillers to work in areas previously inaccessible. The construction of the tramway was done ‘on the cheap’ because they weren’t meant to stay in position very long; therefore a woodenrailed line did the job. These tractors easily ran on such makeshift lines. Another advantage of these rail tractors was, they used the ‘new’ 20th century internal combustion engine, meaning it could be operated at the

extreme limit of railway technology. We believe our Nattrass was used around the Wahi area.

Forestry apprenticeships launched Forestry companies in the Northland region could benefit from new apprenticeship programmes designed to upskill their workers ahead of predicted industry growth. Industr y training organisation Competenz has launched two forest harvesting apprenticeships — one in manual operations and one in mechanised operations. These apprenticeship programmes come at a time the forestry sector is poised for growth following the government’s pledge in January to plant one billion new trees over the next ten years. With mechanisation increasing, the new apprenticeships will ensure apprentices gain key entry-level skills and knowledge before advancing to operation of mechanised processors and harvesters. Competenz chief executive Fiona Kingsford says more than 11,000 people were employed in the forestry sector in 2017 and 4,339 more will be needed by 2022 to replace workers who retire or leave. “This year alone there is demand for up to 1,000 workers nationally, and about 500 of those are needed to fill existing roles being vacated

by people retiring or changing jobs. “Our forestry participation data shows the Northland region could need another 74 forestry workers this year. A qualified workforce leads to greater efficiency, safety, productivity and profitability. “There is a lot of focus right now on the future of forestry — the goal to plant a billion trees, and the investment through the Provincial Growth Fund. It is vital our workforce is skilled and productive to meet the government’s growth targets. “Nearly 65 per cent of the forestry workforce has no post-school qualification, but we would like to see that number reduce. Training and education are essential if the sector is becoming more mechanised and moving into to a period of rapid growth.” The new apprenticeships have been designed with extensive input from the forestry sector. They fall under the government’s fees free scheme that makes the first two years of industry training free for some people.

Boom & Handgun Application of Herbicide Trusted by Northlanders for over 30 years

“There is no better time for forestry companies to take on an apprentice. For people new to forestry or for those already working in the industry but haven’t completed tertiary training

before — this is a real opportunity to start getting qualified at no cost. “Workers will grow their skills and knowledge and gain NZQA-recognised qualifications while learning on-the-job.”

COF station open in Kaikohe

by Ann van Engelen

Located next to the sales yards in Carey Rd, Kaikohe, Northland COF was opened by Iain and Kirstin Forrester and their team on May 21 — offering Certificate of Fitnesses for all trucks, trailers, buses and motorhomes. Richard, the manager, has been involved in the business since February helping setting up the station. “We are a small family-owned and operated business and pride ourselves in giving an honest service and helping the community and truck drivers in general,” says Richard. “I have more than 30 years experience in the industry and owned a truck repair business in Auckland and then worked for a corporate company. I decided to make the move out of the big smoke and head home to family in the Far North and found employment here with Iain and Kirstin. “We enjoy dealing with a variety of people and passing on work to local businesses. We are providing a service that has been lacking in the area for a number of years, and everyone in the area has been very welcoming to our team.” Richard says the flow-on effect to businesses like panel beaters, tyre suppliers, mechanics and the like is positive for the area. “We have people from Dargaville and surrounds come to us. Any rental vehicle or small truck from threeand-a-half tonnes requires a COF and safety is a priority, and logging trucks

and the like rely on our expertise. “We are open from 8am–5pm Monday to Friday and our qualified inspectors tell you exactly what you need. We are only doing inspections and vehicle safety is paramount. We don’t have long waiting queues and are here to provide the Far North with a service that is extremely necessary to help keep businesses running. “I work with a great team, and we look forward to meeting new people and making new friends. It was great to have the MP for Northland, Matt King, as our first client on opening day. He is very supportive of local business, and we see him doing a lot of positive work in the area.” Matt says Iain and Kirstin are great community orientated people, and seeing the job opportunities they have created for others through the COF station and their forestry business is encouraging. “I was very lucky to be their first customer, it was a desperately needed business in Kaikohe,” says Matt. “Iain and Kirstin moved up from the deep south six years ago, and they saw an opportunity for forestry they left their comfort zone and now employ some 50 staff.

The team at Northland COF in Kaikohe, Richard, Noel, Kirstin, Iain, Dick and Sheryl with their first client MP Matt King, on opening day

“They saw there was a need for people with trucks and invested heavily in setting up their COF facilities. It is very convenient for travellers with motorhomes and the heavy trucks in travelling through the region. Trucks are often off the road waiting for hours for their turn elsewhere, and the drivers couldn’t get their work done. “I am sure Richard, Iain, Kirstin and their staff will do well. This is a positive story of things advancing for the good in the Kaikohe area.” Matt says a recent business association meeting saw 50 people in attendance and people said it is nice

to see a new business start up that is helping other businesses. “We have not regretted our move north,” says Iain. “Kaikohe is on the up and opening business here is a good thing. Kirstin and I are grateful for the staff we have, they are all local, and we hope the community helps support us. “We live in the area, and we love it here. We are seeing Kaikohe start to come into its own and progress forward. We are pleased things are going well and that we can employ people from the local and surrounding areas and support the community.”

WARKWORTH

Town and country The Warkworth district is a rural area and locals, and visitors often enjoy the history on display at the Warkworth District Museum that is located in Parry Kauri Park. Visitors can take an easy stroll along one of the well-made boardwalks, through the native bush, to the lookout and kauri tree grove where these giants are a reminder of the days long gone when the kauri was known as ‘king of the forest’. The two large kauri trees at the entrance by the museum are named in honour of former landowners Rev McKinney, the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Warkworth and the Mahurangi, and the Simpson family. The museum is home to displays of the kauri digging implements, photographs of gum-digging, giant pieces of kauri gum, saws, native timber, bushman’s hut and other items connected with the gum-digging days. Continually developing and changing displays give an insight into the lives and pursuits of pioneering families. Recreated rooms of the 1920s — a corner store, kitchen, bedrooms, sitting room, carpentry and blacksmith workshops and a wash house showing the furniture, clothing and the tools of

yesteryear. There is also a ‘whim’, which was used to haul the logs out of the bush, and other items connected with kauri logging on show. Volunteers are always needed for a few hours a month to man the front desk, gift shop and meet and greet the many visitors. The Reptile Park at nearby Ti Point displays a unique collection of both native and exotic species and is the only zoo in New Zealand that specialises in reptiles. At the Warkworth township, the signs will direct you to the road going to Leigh for Goat Island Marine Reserve, through Matakana township and the seaside settlement of Whangateau and Ti Point Road. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk or picnic at the tables set around the park and discover the fascinating creatures in enclosures landscaped to suit their individual requirements. The Reptile Park is an interesting family outing or educational experience for people of all ages.

Explore the Warkworth area As the gateway to the Matakana Coast Wine Country, Warkworth is an easy drive to Tawharanui, Mahurangi East, Matakana, Goat Island, Leigh and Pakiri. The Mahurangi River flows through the township, which was once the lifeblood of Warkworth as sailcraft regularly cruised the waterways, trading between the settlement and Auckland. Nowadays the rigged sailing scow Jane Gifford takes tours down the river, and the river bank has an established playground, parks and a walkway to be enjoyed. The town centre boasts a great selection of shops, cafes and restaurants to be enjoyed by townsfolk and visitors alike. Taste the selection of delights at Chocolate Brown chocolaterie, including traditional British Sweets, Dutch liquorice and fresh fudge, ranging in flavours from traditional ‘rushin’, creme brulee and raspberry cheesecake. Experience a farm and forest horse and pony ride available three kilometres north of Warkworth. People of all ages and experience, including people with disabilities, can participate in this experience. Skywork Helicopters offer a complete charter and scenic flight service with views over farmland, Mangawhai Heads sand dunes, forests and coast. At NorthTec we understand the importance of our region’s primary industries and unique ecosystems. We know that employment prospects are waiting for our well-trained students with a great attitude, who love the outdoors and have a passion for working on the land. NorthTec offers comprehensive training in horticulture, agriculture and forestry, and we now deliver programmes in apiculture (beekeeping) as well. Students can also learn all about fencing, land-based sustainability practices or pest operations. For people with a passion for conservation, NorthTec offers the chance to earn three qualifications in three years, from a level 5 diploma to a degree. You’ll learn all about environmental management, and spend time working in your chosen field to develop practical skills and build career networks. Our tutors all have a strong background and contacts in their industry, and love to share their skills and knowledge with you. With a NorthTec qualification, you’ll be ready to help grow our region, safely, sustainably and prosperously. Courses* on offer include:

• Apiculture • Horticulture • Agriculture • Forestry • Conservation • Pest Operations

HORTICULTURE GRADUATE – MELANIE PETERS “The practicality of the NorthTec horticulture course was really good training for this work. As well as basic plant handling, we learnt about biological control and integrated pest management, plus the importance of record keeping for work diaries, weather and pests and diseases. We also did a hands-on community project making vegetable beds in Kaitaia. “Although I had a good foundation in horticulture knowledge, my growth since I’ve been in this job is in gaining a better understanding of the commercial side of horticulture. There’s a lot involved in the commercial processes and logistics and I’m enjoying learning about that. “I have recently been introduced to all the stages in the seedling department here so I can co-ordinate my colleagues in that area. It’s a step up for me and I’m keen to learn more. I’d now like to do further study, particularly in botany which I’ve become fascinated with since working here.”

MELANIE’S EMPLOYER – STEPHEN WADE, DIRECTOR OF LYNWOOD AVOCADO NURSERY “Melanie approached us when she had heard that we could be looking for staff. It was immediately apparent from both her personality and her NorthTec course training that she had the drive, was interested in the field, and had basic horticultural knowledge. As well as basic plant handling skills, she knew what a fungus was, she knew about pesticides and the difference between good and bad insects – basic things across horticulture. “She is very calm as well as enthusiastic so is great with our team. Melanie also knows the technical skills and processes involved in the clonal propagation process, and the grading and severing of trees. There’s a subtle language and context that goes with working with plants and some people, like Melanie, have an eye and a feel for it. We’re happy to have her for as long as, and as far as, she wants to be here.”

EDUCATION Education is important Whether you are helping your teen decide which school to go to or what to do when they graduate there are a number of options to choose from. A common question for parents living rurally is should they consider boarding school for their children due to isolation and options. There are many reasons to go to boarding school, and academics, athletics and the extracurricular activities available are just a few of the considerations. Boarding schools generally have good sports facilities and after-school activities. Students find sports choices ranging from swimming and athletics to hockey, basketball, rugby and soccer whilst some have equestrian facilities. Theatre, dance, music and the arts are often part of the opportunity which awaits. It is never easy to leave the nest, but pupils learn how to cope with life and its high and low points within a community of peers and make lifelong friendships. If school is not where your older child is performing best, because they don’t fit the mould, investigate educational institutions such as Northtec or other similar organisations.

With small class sizes and knowledgeable tutors, students receive encouragement and support to learn. NorthTec programmes use a range of delivery methods, from classroom time to field trips and project-based learning. They offer a range of programmes including health, business, technology, tourism, education, Maori studies, the arts, painting, agriculture, construction, hospitality, apiculture, agribusiness management and commercial transport. For those interested in farming or a rural career, Taratahi Institute of Agriculture offers a selection of short and long courses providing hands-on learning opportunities for all age groups. General farm skills, fencing and equine, are but a few. It also has taster programmes designed to give students with an interest in a career in agriculture a taste of what it is like to live and learn at Taratahi. Students receive a broad exposure to various farming activities and also get to know many of the staff and tutors on campus.

Often alternative education proves to be the making of some students. Looking into apprenticeship schemes in

your local area to see if your child can get a head start in a career which they are passionate about is also an option.

The Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand Inc was launched in 2006 with the purpose of encouraging and developing professionalism and the highest standards of fencing in New Zealand. “The association continues to grow, offering training, events and professional industry support. The fencing trade in New Zealand is significant, and the agriculture and farming sectors alone equate to considerable primary industry contribution, plus we see significant activity in areas of industrial, security and residential fencing,” says business development manager, Melanie Weir. FCANZ support those in the industry by lifting the profile of the trade, supporting best practice in safety, employment, workmanship and knowledge. The association hold regular meetings and events to facilitate the exchange of information within the regions on new fencing techniques, health and safety, product feedback, pricing and technical information. There are networking opportunities with members and partners, a national conference held annually in July, and access to the FCANZ website directory — helping the public find contractors in their area. FCANZ work in conjunction with institutes such as NorthTec, Taratahi and Primary ITO providing training courses to encourage qualifications for fencing as a career. For example, the level three NZ Certificate in Fencing provides knowledge and practical

Access to NZQA knowledge and learning opportunities is available, as well as employment and recruitment opportunities.” FCANZ also offer a range of benefits and services to members including regional association days, a Fence-it price calculator,

FENCING TRADE DAY Checking the boundaries Rural fencing is an important factor in farming and lifestyle block communities for ensuring stock control and safety. It pays to walk your boundary lines and ensure all areas are secure and have no battens or wire that need replacing. If you have bulls in a roadside paddock, it is important to ensure all fences are in good order as these can easily be broken through with the strength of an animal, particularly if they are fighting and run into the fence. It is often a good idea to hire a professional to install new or replace old fencing as this can save time and expense. To ensure you hire the services of a reputable company ask people in your area or check with the Fencing Contractors of New Zealand Association website. A good fencing contractor is generally able to erect all types of fencing and yards, including deer, sheep, alpaca and cattle or dairy conversions, dog runs, horse arenas, entranceways, post and rail and carry out repairs and maintenance. Many will remove old hedges and fences, level fence lines, dig trenches, carry out ground preparation, and help you design an aesthetically pleasing entrance to your driveway.

A contractor will visit your property to discuss your requirements and provide a quotation for work to be carried out. The main reasons to build a fence are to keep something in or out. There may be a large paddock for cattle that needs reducing in size or a small vegetable patch that people want to keep animals out. A contractor can assess each individual situation and when designing a stock fence will take into account factors including the type of animals to be contained and local ground conditions. This also determines the size of the posts and type of fencing needed. Fences can run along existing tree lines, fence off waterways and options of type including netting, deer, wire or electric, and wooden rails are just some examples that can be used.

I have helped a lot of farmers build equity by leasing good blocks.” Another key plank to his business is lending livestock trading finance for Heartland Bank. “Again, this enables farmers to build equity but also to own their own stock and make crucial buying and decisions

Beef + Lamb New Zealand has welcomed the launch of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as providing a whole of sector approach that builds on the good work already being done by individual industries. “The launch of the Good Farming Practice Action plan is an exciting oppor tunity for New Zealand’s agricultural sector,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor. “This is the first time that farming and horticulture leaders, regional councils and central government have come together and agreed to a set of good practice principles and actions to implement those across the country.” The 21 principles cover nutrient levels, waterways, land and soil health, effluent management and water and irrigation systems, and these principles build on the work already being done in the sector. “As an industry, we see the aims of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as completely achievable. At Beef + Lamb New Zealand, we launched our Environmental Strategy and Implementation Plan last month. It is aligned with the Good Farming Practice Action Plan and will support its achievement,” Mr McIvor said. “Clean water is one of the four priorities in our strategy. Our strategy sets out a number of ways in which we will improve water quality, including all sheep and beef farmers to have a tailored farm environment plan by the end of 2021. “The Good Farming Practice Action Plan gives us a whole of sector approach

More farmers are feeling under financial pressure, and satisfaction with their banks has slipped according to the May 2018 Federated Farmers’ Banking Survey. The biannual survey drew 1,004 responses, more than double that of the last survey in November. While results indicate the vast majority of farmers are still satisfied with their banks, those saying they were ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ fell from 81 per cent to 79 per cent since November. The fall was particularly pronounced for share milkers — 68.5 per cent satisfaction, down from 77 per cent, although for them the drop was mainly driven by more of them having a neutral perception rather than being dissatisfied. Perceptions of ‘undue pressure’ have also picked up, from 8.1 per cent in November to 9.6 per cent in May. The increase is mainly down to dairy, where the increase was from 10 to 13.8 per cent, with share milkers rising from 9.7 to 13.5 per cent. This pressure is still less than experienced in 2016 when one in five share milkers felt undue pressure. Just on 15 per cent of arable farmers reported feeling under more pressure, but there were only 46 respondents from that sector. “While the average mortgage across agriculture has decreased in the past six months, it is up from $4.6 million

It may just be a reflection of the profile of those who took part in the May survey compared to November participants. “It is a fact that dairy holds two-thirds of the total agricultural debt of around $61 billion, and a growing proportion of that dairy debt is held by highly-indebted dairy farms. Fighting Mycoplasma bovis

Pay attention!

The fight against Mycoplasma bovis is escalating with 50 more staff, a new field HQ and the appointment of a science adviser. “Twenty-five new Incident Control Point managers have entered the field after completing training,” says agriculture minister, Damien O’Connor. “These case managers are appointed to work one-on-one with affected farmers under movement controls. They support farmers with information and advice on the practical aspects of the controls. “A further 25 will undergo training in coming weeks, greatly boosting capacity to help those farmers affected by the disease. “The 50 new Incident Control Point staff are on top of the 250 at the Ministry for Primary Industries already undertaking this work. MPI’s compensation team was also recently increased from 22 to 30 and is expected to double in size as the response progresses.” MPI has also opened a new field HQ in Cambridge. “Newly appointed science adviser, Dr John Roche, has been tasked with researching new tools for the fight against Mycoplasma bovis,” says Mr O’Connor. “Dr Roche has a PhD in ruminant nutrition from the National University of Ireland and has most recently worked as a principal scientist at DairyNZ and

Damien O’Connor, agriculture minister

adjunct professor in animal science at Lincoln University. “He will provide strategic science advice across MPI, and his first task will be to head up a new Mycoplasma bovis Science Strategic Advisory Group. “There has been little international investment in science around this disease so the group will look into

testing developments to detect Mycoplasma bovis in individual cows, grow understanding of the disease and identify opportunities to support the New Zealand eradication operation. “With his background in Ireland, where Mycoplasma bovis is widespread, Dr Roche will be ideally placed to lead this work.”

We work very closely with the manufacturers and we can custommake to our clients’ needs.” Cargo, digger and dump trailers, motorhomes, pop-up stores and much more are available — the options are endless. “They come from six foot to 34 foot in length and have up to six wheels. Sailing into the new season by Andy Bryenton

Here’s a fun fact about the Vikings, those far-sailing explorers and reavers who terrorised the British Isles centuries ago. Before setting out on a voyage, each one of those huge hairy warriors had to sit down and knit part of the sail for their longship out of wool. If the thought of a big axe-swinging warlord gripping a pair of knitting needles seems funny, bear in mind that it was a necessary task to even get the voyage started. Sometimes, it takes a whole lot of people to pitch in to get things sorted. Furthermore, that takes us neatly to a different kind of Viking — Yamaha’s new model of their big farmcapable side-by-side. Or in this case, side-by-side-by-side. Just like the old sea warriors who gave it its name, the Yamaha Viking packs in ranks of burly troops — it has seating for no less than six. That’s not to say that space for cargo is limited, either. The rear tray of this big machine is the size of a pallet, and it’s beefy enough to ferry the whole team and their kit to pretty much anywhere, on or off the beaten track. This is achieved with a classic combination of wide, knobbly tyres, a generous ride height, independent suspension and 686cc of overhead cam, four-stroke grunt. The long wheelbase — a necessity when it comes to fitting in six comfy seats, each with its own headrest — means that there’s a danger of getting ‘beached’ on lumpy terrain.

However, the rails of the Viking’s tough frame slide off, and there’s something uncanny about how much grip those wheels can find, even when the Viking is fully crewed. Another fun fact about the old Norsemen is that their longships were modular — easy to take apart to stow for the winter, and easy to upend to create a rough and ready shelter on foreign shores. Similarly, the Yamaha Viking boasts supreme ease of access to its

engine for service — flip up the tray and there everything is. That means it’s easy to clean mud and dirt away from vital parts, easy to change filters and check fluids, and simple to maintain without downtime and a handful of wrenches. This year’s Viking builds on a solid platform and cements its place in a very particular market niche. If you have a large team who have to get into the back blocks for hard work, this is the top machine for the task.

Hit for six by Andy Bryenton

While the world goes a little bit crazy for the power of the new Lexus LS500, the new super-coupe manufactured by the top-rank badge in the Toyota Motor Corporation’s arsenal, there’s a little of its look and aggression in an unexpected place as well. Take a peek at the front of the 2018 Toyota Camry, and you’ll see a shadow of that spindle-shaped grille. There’s more, too. While some of the Japanese auto giant’s research and development crew have been busy adding wicked speed and power to the big LS, and others were engaged in ladling luxury into last year’s new Century super-limo, those in charge of the most family-friendly big sedan in the lineup have appropriated a bit of both. It may be a sign of the times in a world without a big V8 Commodore or Falcon on offer Down Under, but the latest Camry has moved far beyond the gentle styling and modest power of its ancestors. Instead, the flagship of the new Camry range packs a V6 under the hood with a neat 300 horsepower, and 362 Nm of torque. Not so long ago, the only Japanese sedan boasting these figures was the twin-turbo Subaru Legacy Blitzen — or a hard-riding, fullnoise Mitsubishi Evo. Despite delivering all that grunt via the front wheels, Toyota has made the new Camry sporty as well as smooth. A clear statement of intent? Well, you can option the leather seats, and the

interior accents, in a shade of red leather normally only associated with Lucifer’s wardrobe. Part of the smooth delivery of all that power — recall that the Camry you remember from the 1980s had one third the horses — comes from advanced direct-port fuel injection and a quad cam system, which are worlds ahead of what was on offer in your dad’s day. An eight-speed automatic gearbox provides

the rest. Then there’s the electronic wizardry behind the scenes, such as the all-speed adaptive radar cruise control, which automatically keeps your distance from the vehicle in front, in all conditions, without the driver having to go anywhere near the pedals. This, then, is a prime example of evolution flowing through to the regular car buyer from those halo products of the not too distant past. Features,

which were once the preserve of Lexus and the even more exclusive Century badge, are now part of a car which is synonymous with ‘prudent investment’ and ‘reliable safety’. The thing to remember, of course, is that the word Camry is actually an English rendition of the Japanese term ‘Kanmuri’, which means ‘crown’. You can’t help but think that Toyota’s latest mid-sized sedan is out to win one.

ADVERTORIAL

The ProBlast way Specialising in large-scale abrasive blasting including soda, garnet, glass and walnut shells, based in Kaukapakapa, Duran Callaghan is the owner of ProBlast & Coatings Ltd.

“I am a certified CorrosionX applicator and I launched my business because looking after vehicles is important, and I can’t stand corrosion,” says Duran. “At times a wet blast with fine garnet, glass or soda is best, especially on old American cars. Dry blasting heats up, and it can warp the panels. If you sandblast something you don’t want rusting so I use CorrosionX rust converter to seal and prime, and you can paint over it or leave it as the black look.” CorrosionX XD can be applied — this oil seals and stops rusting for many months outdoors and is removed with CorrosionX Xtreme Clean prior to painting. Duran uses CorrosionXD for internal steelwork, over electrical and battery terminals, fuse boxes, engine bays, under vehicle bodies and RVs. “I do small projects with my mobile galvanising, and for older vehicles, I use

flame spray galvanising to fill holes and pitted rust marks — a fist-sized hole can be filled and is stronger and bonds better with the metal, whereas fibreglass and body filler can fall out, shrink, crack and detach. “For boat trailers, an application of CorrosionX fights the corrosive seawater from damaging the galvanising. “My speciality is large-scale abrasive blasting for diggers, trucks, boats and large surfaces. I remove painted parking bays, graffiti on stone columns and I can blast historical structures at a lower pressure avoiding holes being blasted into buildings. “I blast a whole vehicle exterior in approximately two hours and pride myself on getting old vehicles back to a healthy sound physical state. “When I do your project, it will be done once and done correctly.” Call Duran for a chat on 021 0200 3226 Monday to Friday 8am–5pm.

Boats, guns and concrete trucks What do they have in common? They all corrode if you let them and they all get their remedy from Corrosion Control NZ Ltd in Whangarei — just like so many more things prone to rust, dust and a really hard-working life. If it’s ‘mission critical’ like your fishing reels on Sunday, your harvester two days before the rain or the computer in the milking shed, then make sure it’s treated with CorrosionX. Keep your electrics and electronics waterproof and the moving parts moving. That’s what CorrosionX does. Local dealers and applicators in Northland provide top service also in and around Dargaville, Kaukapakapa, Matakana and Whangarei. Have you heard of CorrosionX products for concrete trucks, concrete boxing, moulds and concrete hoppers? CCNZ Ltd in Whangarei stocks New Zealand’s most advanced form-release agents, rust removers and concrete washes. In Whangarei, they stock not just the usual acids and hard cleaners, but also smart coatings to prevent concrete build-up on the trucks from the start. These products work quietly and effortlessly overnight doing the

task of what used to spoil a concrete man’s evening. All Safe, Bioslide, Silispray, Sandblast, Rust remover and a few more products from CCNZ Ltd work for you the smart way. Products not harming lungs, cars parked next to the truck-cleaning bay or tools. Less harm and less hammering mean less money spent on painting trucks, damages or cleaning tools. Better efficiency for trucks and drivers. Smart products for smart people! Would you like to put your concretesoiled tools into a bucket in the evening and next morning pull it out clean, ready for work? Or spray up your concrete splattered concrete mixer after work, fish in the evening and hose the mixer clean next morning? Sounds reasonable? Then give Tom a call at Corrosion Control NZ Ltd in Whangarei 09 438 8800 or mob 021 469 972. Visit online corrosionx.org or email tom@corrosionx. org.

Petrolhead heaven has arrived Car, bike, racing and hot rod fans — this one is for you. The 12th edition of the country’s best motorsport, hot rod and automotive show — CRC Speedshow — will take place at the ASB Showgrounds over the weekend of July 21 and 22 and it looks set to be an absolute cracker. This year one of the most recognised personalities in global motoring and motorsport will also be a big part of the show...the very first Top Gear Stig, a.k.a. ex-F1 driver Perry McCarthy. McCarthy’s Formula One experience is the stuff of legend as were his exploits as the Stig and he is certain to be a very popular addition to an already packed and bursting show. The main halls three and four will once again display some of the country’s finest autos, and the trade area in hall two will be in full swing too. The outdoor live-action arena offers thrills in the open air, while other live displays and demonstrations will be going on throughout the show. These include pit stop competitions, police recruitment and numerous other initiatives designed to engage and immerse fans. Hot Rods again form a solid element of the show which has become the number one place in New Zealand to launch new rods or show rare creations. Organisers again expect the Teng Tools Grand National Rod & Custom show in hall one to be packed to the brim with more than 50 of the best machines in New Zealand and indeed the world.

With a bunch of awesome vintage, retro and hot rod related businesses there will be something for everyone at Petrolhead Magazine Retro-O-Rama in hall six — ‘mantiques’, memorabilia and collectibles, genuine, reproduction, retro and vintage clothing, shoes and accessories, handbags and wallets, makeovers, kustom artists and much, much more! To celebrate the big screen history of the automobile, CRC Speedshow will also have a huge area dedicated to movie vehicles. Already lined up are icons recognisable in the Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Gone in 60 Seconds, Mad Max, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Stephen King’s Christine, Herbie, The World’s Fastest Indian, Jurassic Park Ford Explorer, American Graffiti, Thelma & Louise — and of course a Mini from our own Goodbye Pork Pie! YOUR CHANCE TO WIN — To win one of FOUR tickets to the amazing CRC Speedshow on July 21–22 in Auckland,
