“This year the theme is ‘weaving people together’ and this is something the group do well. We want to celebrate and acknowledge the work people do,” says Volunteering Northland manager Bart van der Meer. “With volunteering, there is something for everyone to be involved in. We have tree planters, beach and river cleaners, emergency service helpers, befriending and buddying roles, charity shop workers, sea cleaners, St John assistants, victim support workers — the list is endless. Schools get involved all over Northland as well. Keep NZ Beautiful is always a big event held September 9–15.” As an organisation Volunteering Northland help bring many different roles together, including committees, festival organisers, administrators, advisors, artists, and entertainers. “In all of Northland there is only one paid fire station, and that is Whangarei. Everywhere else is volunteer based. The Whangarei station supports thousands of Fire and Emergency volunteers across the district. “These people get called to accidents as well as fires now, and there is a lot of pressure on them. Anyone who volunteers is appreciated no matter what capacity they are able to help in.

Volunteers really are the backbone of the Northland Fire and Emergency Services, and we need more people to come on board as there are always shortages. “Even if you live in the middle of nowhere, there are virtual roles available for people who have time to help. Some groups meet once a month. There are elderly people who need friendships and transport control helpers for accidents, Caring Caller roles, and there is a guided migrant programme. “People are involved in planting trees all over Northland, on farms, in towns and communities, making a big difference in supporting the ecosystems. “Matariki ti rakau is a project celebrating the 100 years past the first world war and is part of the One Billion Trees programme. One Northland organisation is planting 50,000 native trees this year. These help the riverways with riparian planting and establishing a healthy environment for everyone. “There is a place for everyone, and many people need to be thanked. We work with more than 200 non-profit organisations and currently have more than 200 roles available.” For more information contact Volunteering Northland on 0800 865 268 or visit volunteeringnorthland.nz.

Mahoe cheese honoured

SMOKE ALARMS

Save Lives

Mahoe Farm Cheese has again taken top honours at the annual New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards with the Mahoe Farmhouse Cheese, Cumin Gouda being awarded Puhoi Valley Champion of Champions — Boutique Cheese Award. Mahoe Farmhouse Cheese, Cumin Gouda was also named the nation’s best Dutch-style cheese. The trophy was among 26 announced at the 2019 NZ Champions of Cheese Awards on May 21, organised by the New Zealand Specialist Cheesemakers Association. There was a total of 223 gold, silver and bronze medal winners with judging again under the guidance of Australian Master Cheese Judge, Russell Smith. Mr Smith said the awards for Dutchstyle cheeses reflect the quality of these cheeses in New Zealand. “Kiwis are fortunate to have a handful of brilliant cheesemakers here, making these types of cheeses. I judge across the world, and Dutch-style cheeses made in New Zealand are as good as anywhere in the world. Mahoe Farmhouse Cheese, Cumin Gouda is an exceptional cheese.” It is made to a traditional Dutch recipe, which adds the cumin seeds to the curd. “Anna and Bob Rosevear and their family have been making Mahoe cheese in the Bay of Islands since 1986. Their son Tim takes care of the 60 Friesian cross-bred cows whose milk goes straight from the milking shed to the cheesery next door and is crafted into cheese by sons Jesse and Jake who work alongside a Dutch cheesemaker.” Mahoe has won seven supreme awards with Jake Rosevear being named

the country’s top cheesemaker two years in a row. The Cumin Gouda has won a variety of gold medals in the past, but this is the first time it has won the top award. Mahoe Cumin Gouda is available from the Mahoe Cheese Farm Shop on the farm in Oromahoe Bay and also from selected retailers across the country. Called komijne kaas in the Netherlands, it was particularly popular with European customers and one of the family’s best selling varieties. Mahoe Blue and Very Old Edam are also popular with customers. “This year’s awards have been a great success, with the reintroduction

of judging of butter and yoghurt as well as the introduction of new categories,” said NZSCA chair, Neil Willman. “The NZ Champion of Cheese Awards wouldn’t be possible without the businesses that support our industry, and we are grateful for their generous contributions.”

June 2019  NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Discovering Scottish farming BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Bridget Henderson has always wanted to learn more about her Scottish heritage and will finally get the chance thanks to the highly sort after NZ Young Farmers exchange with the Scottish Association of Young Farmers.

“T

he exchange offers NZ Young Farmers members an opportunity to meet young farmers in Scotland,” said NZYF membership manager, Casey Huffstutler. The 25-year-old farmer helps on her family’s 280 cow dairy farm and works at the nearby Farmlands store. Her adventure begins in June, and as part of the experience, she will attend the world-renowned Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh. “I will stay with a number of rural families and gain a broader understanding of agriculture in Scotland and the challenges faced by the country’s agri-food producers,” says Bridget. “We have hosted several young farmers from Scotland, and I am excited

to experience the things they talked about. People say there are strong similarities between the agricultural sectors in the two countries and I am hoping there might be some useful practices I can bring back to our farm. “We also have sheep, which I work with, and I am currently trying to gain as much knowledge about cropping, sheep and beef, dairying and grazing units as possible. I have ridden horses all my life and am an instructor at pony club. My long-term goal is to become a technical field adviser or an independent farm consultant.” Bridget has a bachelor of commerce majoring in farm management from Lincoln University. She has completed rural servicing papers through Primary

ITO, and her family are registered raw milk providers. “Our herd is wintered on the 140-hectare farm, with young stock grazed on a support block. We do all of the harvesting ourselves and supplement made for the milking platform, and the runoff is all done with our own machinery. I have a bit of contracting experience and completed a harvest in Western Australia while I was at university. It was a great way to see a different part of the primary industries in another country.” Bridget was part of the TeenAg club at high school and has been an active member of Young Farmers since 2012. She is keen to use her experiences to help raise awareness of where food comes from. “I’m surprised how many people don’t know the pasture to plate story behind what they eat. I love seeing the reaction from people, especially young children who don’t realise cows eat grass, produce milk, which is then processed, bottled and ends up in the supermarket. They think it comes from a bottle in a supermarket and have no comprehension it comes from a cow. “I help on the farm, and with the raw milk business, we calve a dozen cows to milk through winter. Working in retail with Farmlands means I see the whole sector and a lot of clients like how raw milk takes them back to when they were growing up with a house cow. Pasteurisation kills the good and bad bacteria, and some people who moved to town can’t drink processed milk.

Save Lives

Bridget has hosted several young farmers from Scotland and is looking forward to experiencing the Scottish lifestyle They also like the fact they can see the cream on top, and you can tell when the Jerseys are milked as they produce the most cream according to our recordings. “I am really looking forward to seeing what Scottish farmers do as I hear it is similar to here but different. I want to see the old heritage because they have so much more history than us and I want to learn how they deal with their restrictions and discover the little things we take for granted that are big to them. They even look at livestock totally different and breed more for looks and style whereas we breed for dual purpose. “After the exchange, I will travel to Ireland, Wales and England and hope to

visit some universities to see their trial research and what could be used here in farming for the future. I want to broaden my knowledge to help me become a farming consultant in the future. “NZ Young Farmers will contribute $500 to my flights, and they have also organised my accommodation and farms to visit. I love the whole lifestyle of farming and being out in the elements. You have average days when it is cold and wet, but breathing fresh air is nice, and it is a good diverse career.”

DREAM

2018

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Guy and Jaye Bakewell have taken the opportunity of providing raw milk to others as a way to advance themselves in the industry.

T

he 31-year-old is in his second season 50:50 sharemilking 150 cows near Wellsford. “Jaye and I met at Taratahi when we were 17 years old. I grew up in town in Manawatu and Jaye grew up on a farm in Hastings. She enjoyed farming and didn’t want to return to school, and I didn’t want to go to school, so mum said to find a course and I was relief milking, so pursued farming,” says Guy. “This is our first 50/50 sharemilking job. I was managing a farm in Taupo

with 800 cows, and downsizing has been very different for us, it is far more enjoyable. We milk once a day, and it is a better lifestyle for the family. We do all the chores and have the afternoon for other things. “I have a diploma in business studies from Massey University. Jaye and I decided to investigate alternative ways to generate extra income to get us ahead as a family. The farm overlooks State Highway One, where an estimated 15,000 vehicles pass by every day. saw an opportunity waiting to be tapped, and after months of planning and hard work, we opened our vending machine dispensing raw milk on the farm in August last year. We sold 30 litres of milk on the first day, and now sell an average of 100 litres a day. There are more than 10,000 dairy farms in this country, yet there are only 26 registered raw milk suppliers.” Bakewell Creamery is operated by Guy and Jaye, Guy’s parents have also invested in the venture. The vending machine is one of only 15 in New Zealand. “Herd owning sharemilkers only receive half the monthly milk cheque, and our idea was driven by economics. I am a big believer in thinking outside the box to make opportunities work. ”We do mostly grass and grass silage and grow our own maize silage. We spring calve and are transitioning into autumn calving now as we want to supply our product every day.” The herd is split in two, 130 cows are milked once-a-day, and that milk is bought by Fonterra. Seventeen cows are run in a separate mob, and their milk supplies the vending machine, which customers can access 24/7. “The business is registered with the Ministry of Primary Industries and undergoes a food safety inspection twice a year and is inspected a third time to ensure we meet Fonterra’s conditions of supply,” says Guy. Going from dairy farmers to raw milk producers has been a steep learning curve. The family have been guided by Richard Houston, who started Village

by Ann van Engelen Graham Phillips grew up helping his father grow daffodils and carried on the family tradition and later founding Clandon Daffodils with his wife, Bronwyn.

G

raham grows, shows and hybridises daffodils and has collected certain varieties from around the world. He is also a judge of the flower at both national and international shows. Ian Riddell joined Clandon Daffodils in 1991. He and his wife Marian purchased the business in 2016 and Graham remains an integral part of the company. “His dedication and passion to improving the flower mean there are now more than 1,000 varieties grown on our property,” says Ian. “We lease a further seven acres to keep up with demand. We have a single version of Erlicheer available now but our flower picking season generally starts around mid-June and continues

to October — peak harvesting is around Daffodil Day. “We try to pick all the flowers we can for market by late spring. Those we don’t get picked for sale leave the fields with a wonderful display of all sorts of colours. “We take our blooms to the Mount Wellington flower market in Auckland. It is interesting to see what varieties the other daffodil growers have available there as well. There are people who sell bulbs as their main source of income and do the flowers on the side. We do flowers as our priority, and the bulbs help us keep financial off season. “The blooms are picked in bunches of 10 and with as long as stems as possible. We are constantly working toward making different varieties flower

SAYS YOU’RE SERIOUS

The extremely efficient New Zealand designed & built Freezflow Icebank will replace your primary means of milk chilling.

Builds up ice off-peak so only small water pumps run during milking! Using cold water to cool the milk is a safe way to prevent milk freezing! Snap-chilling from 38ºC to 6ºC reduces bacteria, maximising your payout!

Operating since 2015, the joint venture between Total Refrigeration and Action Manufacturing has been capitalising on both companies’ strengths to develop the Freezflow Icebank, a new technology that delivers reliable and efficient milk cooling on-farm. The latest field-testing has proven both the reliability and performance of the Icebank, reducing the risk of milk damage, subsequent cost and potential breakdowns of old equipment.

earlier than usual, which can take quite an effort. We now have around 160 commercial varieties and one trend over the past few years is the noticeable demand for double daffodils, which look like a rose. We would be one of the biggest producers of double daffodils in New Zealand and have them on the market for 11 to 12 weeks. The florists particularly like them for bouquets.” Clandons Daffodils are proud to support the Cancer Society with their fundraising efforts annually producing 15–18,000 bunches for them. “This is a stressful time of year because if the weather doesn’t go right, we don’t have enough flowers, but the reward of helping the people to get rid of cancer is important to us. The Cancer Society also has the incredible lodge where people who live too far out of town can stay for their treatment. Some of the money raised from selling the daffodils helps fund the lodge.” Once October passes and the daffodils are no longer flowering, the focus is placed on weed control and bulb care. “We dig the bulbs from November onwards and store them. Around February/March they are hot water treated. We put them into a special solution at 44 degrees Celsius for three hours to kill any bugs you can’t see. “Specialising in different varieties is thanks to Graham’s ability to hybridise and bring new flowers to our block. At present we are focussing on producing a range of colours and types to be available throughout the whole flowering season.

Should I take coenzyme Q10? Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we normally make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good quality CoQ10. CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most essential antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness; this can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation.

Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately, this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also required to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50%. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100– 200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside statins will in most cases, protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the wellresearched and patented US product CoQsol. If you are unsure feel free to phone or email your questions. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. New pool structure Just Avocados at their recent season review meetings announced a new export payment pool structure for their growers. The specialist avocado packer and exporter has introduced an early season pool, a late-season pool and a consignment (shipment by shipment) option. “Our new split pool and consignment options give Just Avocados growers even greater flexibility and the freedom to decide how they want their orchard business to run,” says Just Avocados’ supply and logistics manager Jarrod Redwood. Redwood says that growers have diverse goals when it comes to what they want to achieve on their orchards and the new pool model has been designed to work with this. “We’ve spent a lot of time understanding what drives our growers and while most are after the best export return, others look at the total crop income. Then there are others who are also mindful of supporting orchard health and encouraging return crop.” Just Avocados has moved away from a traditional season-long pool model to align with their earlier harvest strategy and provide growers with a model where they can decide which pool and option suit them best. “Growers can place fruit in either one of the pools or both pools based on your personal goals and harvest strategy. “You can place fruit on a shipment by shipment basis and put the remaining fruit in either pool but not in the same harvest period. For example, early harvest on consignment and late fruit in the late pool or alternatively early pool and late harvest on consignment,” explains Redwood.

Just Avocados is the only exporter offering split pools and a consignment option. “Feedback we have received has so far been positive. Growers are liking the ability to decide when they want to pick their fruit and how they would like that transacted.” The long-term strategy to move to earlier harvest is a focus that has been driven by high values in Asia and fruit quality issues in Australia. Just Avocados plans to place 50% of export volume into Australia and 50% into Asia over the 2019–20 season; this is an increase from the 30% that was placed into Asia for the 2018–19 season. “The new pool and consignment options align with our strategy of placing larger and earlier volumes into Asia, reducing the need for holding fruit late for Australia at a time when fruit quality is deteriorating, fruit drop occurs, and export pack outs decline. There is also the important factor of reducing the stress on your trees that occurs when holding significant volumes of crop.” The exporter believes there is greater value for growers to achieve through the new pool model. “The new options will benefit growers with improved cash flow as the early pool will finalise early 2020. Late pools will be reflective of late-season values; therefore, providing total value upside for growers who wish to hold fruit for the late value markets.” Growers who are interested in seeing how the new model might benefit them are invited to contact the Just Avocados team.

Creativity hits the runway The annual Dargaville Wearable Arts extravaganza is coming. Last year’s show was a feast for the senses, with amazing artwork on display from a talented group of designers. This year promises to be even better, and plans are underway across the Kaipara and beyond for a new collection of visually stunning creations. The categories for 2019 have been streamlined and headed up with some bold inspirations — Our Natural Environment celebrates the biodiversity of the land, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle points the way to creative ideas for an ecologically sound future, and the Avant Garde category pushes the envelope of design and blurs the line between fashion and modern art. These categories serve as a jumping off point for the imagination — suggesting materials, colours, design cues and themes, which will shape the vision of the designers. Equally important are the many categories of prizes to be won, with two brand new awards being rolled out for the 2019 extravaganza. A prize for design and construction rewards those entrants who engineer something amazing from the unexpected. There’s another new award for the stage presence of a single model, taking in how they breathe life into art with their personality. All up, there are fourteen prizes, including the coveted people’s choice award and the supreme winner. If you think you have what it takes to make your creation come alive

Out of touch with New Zealand by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

The government’s so-called ‘Wellbeing Budget’ is a stunning document — and not in a good way. increasing under this government. Nevertheless, the government has sought to address those. Good on them. There are also huge and growing problems for the great majority of New Zealanders, which this government and this budget have seemingly forgotten, or more likely, are content to leave in the too-hard basket. Problems such as escalating rents, vociferous taxes and let me say it; a government that seems to be displaying dangerous levels of incompetency. No, this is not a budget that shows a government in touch with the major issues. It is not even a budget that shows a government in touch with New Zealand. It is a budget that is little more than, well, being something that may be portrayed as rather visionary on the world stage (where this government seems to like to stride) but does very little for us back home.

Not for me. Not for you. Moreover, I suggest, not for the majority of New Zealanders. Therein, I suggest, lies the problem. The vast majority of New Zealanders have, for the most part, been marginalised by this budget. They have missed out and been bypassed by a government that is consistently failing to address the big problems and the concerns of middleclass New Zealanders — education, health, law and order. This government’s thoughts and priorities lie elsewhere, and the proportional spend reflects that. Of the operational spend, education gets $14.3 billion, health is slightly better at $18.3 billion, law and order get a paltry $4.6 billion, and social security and welfare get a whopping $28.9 billion. Nobody would dispute that there are some very real welfare problems in this country and it’s probably churlish to point out that they are

We want you to have a positive and profitable experience so that you will plant a new crop and ensure your children reap the benefits in another 30 years. To get the job done thoroughly requires good planning of engineering, inventory, marketing options and a fair valuation, steps that are far too often overlooked by owners who don’t have sufficient knowledge to maximise value of their harvest. Forme has no affiliations with log buyers, log marketing companies, logging contractors or agents. Winning with awareness Hancock Forest Management Ltd won the Environmental Action in Industry award at the recent Northland Regional Council Environmental Awards by successfully combining forestry management and kiwi populations. With around 40,000 hectares of plantation forest, 12,000 hectares of it reserve land, the company recognised that there could be kiwi present that needed protecting. Hancocks is part of a communityled Community Pest Control Area and considers economic, social and environmental considerations when making business decisions. A partnership with DOC Livestock was formed to maintain a trapping programme targeting mustelids and feral cats in the pine forests. Through considerate harvesting operations and intensive pest control, pest numbers are decreasing, flora and fauna are recovering, and kiwi populations are increasing. “It is good to get the recognition for what we do through our kiwi monitoring,” said Northland manager Tony Hancock. “We are strongly committed to providing a safe working environment and to being good environmental stewards. We have populations of kiwi in some of our forests and due to predators the numbers were declining, and we didn’t want to see this happening on our watch. We are monitoring and kiwi listening and employ a contractor to do our trapping. We try to tie into

community-based groups that do the same on neighbouring properties like at our Waipu forest and set up a buffer to the neighbour’s project. That has now grown to other properties as well, and we relocate birds when necessary. “I am an environmental forester recognising we need to try and save every single bird. are killed by dogs or getting run over. Wandering and lost dogs are a big problem and have caused projects to fail because they have a good sense of smell and will kill. Mustelids like stoats kill juvenile birds. “If we are clearing a space, any birds that are disturbed are placed elsewhere in the forest. We also have a great relationship with the Kiwi Coast Project. “It was pleasing to get the award. We can mulch and mow where others can’t access, so you don’t need to spray before we come. We clear anything from lifestyle blocks, small sections and large developments. We are able to clear vegetation up to five metres tall down to ground level, which will increase the nutritional value of your soil,” says owner-operator Andy. “We take before and after footage with a drone, which is great for absentee owners, and provide a wide range of services to the rural sector, including industrial and residential owners. We also work on heritage sites, waterways and flood protection areas.” The unique remote-control system makes the machinery safe for all terrain. “Our remote mulching capability is really manoeuvrable and allows us to work around native trees, plants and sensitive areas. Video to aid biosecurity A new in-flight biosecurity video will remind international visitors about the importance of protecting New Zealand from unwanted pests and diseases. Biosecurity New Zealand launched the video that will play to arriving passengers on all airlines with screen capacity. “All visitors to the country and Kiwis returning home can help protect New Zealand from harmful pests and diseases,” says the head of Biosecurity New Zealand, Roger Smith. “The new in-flight video provides a clear message about what everyone’s responsibilities are when arriving here. The simple lesson is; if you are unsure about an item, you have got — declare it. “Things like the Queensland fruit fly and brown marmorated stink bug have the potential to cause significant damage to our primary sector, our environment and to our unique way of life.” There are two versions of the video — one in English and one for Chinese airlines in Mandarin. The videos feature Auckland-based quarantine officers Fin and Kenneth who can usually be found on the ground at Auckland International Airport. Detector dog, Darwin the beagle, has a starring role in the video. Darwin and handler Mikkiie work on the front-line sniffing out items that aren’t allowed here. Mr Smith says he is pleased the majority of

airlines that fly into the country have agreed to play the video. “United Airlines was the first airline to start playing it, and others with the capability to show videos on board quickly followed.” The video is part of a wider Biosecurity New Zealand programme focussed on protecting Aotearoa and supports the biosecurity movement ‘Ko Tatou This Is Us’. “‘Ko Tatou This Is Us’ highlights the personal connection we all have to the land, rivers, lakes and sea that nourish and provide for us.” The new in-flight biosecurity video is translated into 12 different languages, including Hindi, Malay, Arabic, Korean and French. It has also been translated into Bislama, a national language in Vanuatu spoken by many seasonal workers.

Custom-made quality

For more than 15 years Acti-Bush Ltd has been making bushes and pins for machinery operators; they have always supplied to larger players like mining companies, crane operators and civil construction companies, and now, mainly through word-of-mouth, smaller enterprises are ordering from the company’s extensive range. The range is made and stocked in New Zealand. Operators can order any standard bush size for almost any make of machinery and be confident that the product will be in their hand the next day. Acti-Bush general manager Steve Neville says this is particularly attractive to people like contractors and farmers with their own bulldozers and diggers, as they’re often under pressure and need to fit the work in whenever time and weather allow. “When pins and bushes wear out owners of smaller machinery need replacement parts. “They know that through us they will get fast, helpful service and they will be able to change the part themselves rather than having to go to an engineering shop.” Acti-Bush also carries a stock of pin seals, shims and tags. Their 200+ bush sizes are machined to strict tolerances and heat treated for hardness, and every unit is quality checked. It is common for Acti-Bush pins and bushes

to last two or three times longer than imported equivalents reducing maintenance costs and “If anything, they’re too good,” Steve says. “They don’t wear out fast enough, so people don’t need to buy replacements.” Initially, Acti-Bush product sold only in Auckland, and now it’s sold throughout New Zealand and into the Pacific region. Steve says while the business grew out of necessity; the company is proud of the product, they are manufacturing and their ability to do so at a competitive price. “We’re very proud of being a New Zealand company, making a highquality product in New Zealand and employing New Zealanders.” Simple 24/7 ordering through the Acti-Bush website has reduced turnaround time even further. Custom-made pins can also be ordered through the website, and every one-off product is made to the same high standards of technical accuracy and reliability.

Tree protest plans

by Paul Campbell

A newly formed forest lobby group has told the government it needs to slow down on policies which have led to thousands of hectares of hill country farmland being converted to blanket forestry in the last year, in a policy, that seems at odds with the ‘billion trees’ programme. Supporters of the group are planning a march on parliament. Fifty Shades of Green spokesman and Wairarapa sheep and beef farmer, Mike Butterick, says there has been significant land use change at a speed and scale that has “caught everyone by surprise. “It has snowballed so quickly that we need to hit the pause button and ask whether this is what we intended to happen,” he said. “We are not against dealing with climate change, just the way we get there. Blanket forestry is only a 50year solution to the carbon and climate change problem.” The group, which has gathered supporters from around New Zealand since forming last month plans to march on parliament to demonstrate its concerns. It said government incentives to plant trees, to offset greenhouse gas emissions and meet reduction targets are tilting the market too far in favour of both domestic and overseas forestry investors. “We are not anti-tree, but it is all about moderation and having the right tree in the right place,” Mr Butterick said.

SAFETY FIRST

“We are some of the most efficient food producers in the world, and the social, economic and environmental consequences of blanket forestry are significant.” The government has set a goal to plant one billion trees by 2028 designed to ‘deliver improved social, environmental, and economic outcomes for New Zealand.’ Led by Forestry New Zealand and funded by the Provincial Growth Fund, the programme will: •• create employment and workforce development •• optimise land use •• mitigate climate change •• support Maori values and aspirations •• protect the environment •• support New Zealand’s transition to a low emissions economy. The government has allocated $120 million through the One Billion Trees Fund for direct grants to landowners, particularly farmers, to include trees on their farms. The fund does not support whole farm conversions and has a target of planting two-thirds natives.

Holiday Guide Treasuring time away Whether you spend hours, days or weeks working at your job, time away is something that we all need with our loved ones, and New Zealand has many ideal spots for doing just that. Time away is vital to keep our relationships fresh and alive, refuel ourselves and have quality time with no outside interruptions that so often take priority over the people that should matter the most. In the Kaipara region, there are many beaches, including Baylys Beach. Baylys Beach Holiday Park offers accommodation for every type of traveller — whether you are on a family holiday or travelling the world with your backpack. This Dargaville holiday complex is a short walk from the spectacular long and remote sandy beaches of the west coast. Activities include coastal walks, surfing, surf casting, horse trekking, and playing a round of golf at the local Northern Wairoa 19-hole golf course. The beach is ideal for weddings, four-wheel drive groups, paragliding, parasailing and land yachting. The local takeaway, Sharky’s, is open seven days a week. If you are in the Far North, Harrison Cape Runner Tours have a fleet of

personally designed and built all terrain 4x4 truck to bus conversions. These were created with a conscious effort at looking to the future, passenger safety and enjoyment, consideration and protection of the environment throughout the design and construction process. The seating and large panoramic windows make the best scenic viewing available. The full-day comprehensive tours include many stops such as the Aupouri Forest, Ninety Mile Beach, Te Paki Stream and sand dunes, Cape Reinga and more. When travelling through Whangarei, be sure to check out Claphams National Clock Museum at the Town Basin. The collection has grown over time to encompass many rare and notable exhibits and is home to more than 2,100 clocks and timepieces, making it one of the largest collections of clocks in the Southern Hemisphere. To make the most of the south, venture out with the Appleby family at Affinity Cruises.

From booking your photographer, flowers, venue and theme, there are many options available to suit every personality and desire. The first step to help you along the way would be to create a list of your ideas, desires, budget and other important factors or traditions. Whether it be a dream location, a beachside ceremony or a local church, setting the date is the first important step to secure your ceremony or reception venue if necessary. Photographers are also very busy along with cake makers, celebrants, classic vehicle rentals, hairdressers, caterers and florists for those specially chosen flowers for your bouquets. Scanning bridal magazines or the internet for themes and styles of clothing is a good option if you are unsure of what may look good on the day. Compiling a guest list can at times become stressful but remember, it is your day, and you get to choose whom you invite. Times have changed, and it is no longer necessary to have to cater to everyone in your extended families.

If you prefer a small and intimate wedding, then so be it. Choosing your bridal attendants doesn’t have to happen immediately either. Take time to consider your options and make sure you want the people whom you decide upon. You do not need to feel pressured into having someone that you are not comfortable with for the sake of keeping others happy. Remember, it is your special day.

To top it all off, make your honeymoon location a special adventure should you choose to take one. It is your time to explore New Zealand, locally or nationally, or travel abroad for a romantic or adventurous start in life together. A honeymoon is where you create your first memories as a married couple. A place you get to relax, unwind and enjoy each other’s company as you begin your new life together.

The look that makes you feel good! We sell; VASSALLI, Verge, Joseph Ribkoff, Loobies Story, Desigual, Maison Scotch and more, including professional make up great for everyday as well as special occasions - Wendy Hill Cosmetics.

TYING THE KNOT Getting a wedding licence When planning your wedding, you can choose a personalised ceremony or a registry ceremony. A personalised ceremony can be held anywhere you and your celebrant agree upon, which means the opportunities are endless. You can write your own vows, or the celebrant may have prewritten options for you to choose from. You are responsible for organising and paying for the marriage licence, which at present, costs $150 plus any other costs agreed between you and your celebrant. Your celebrant can often help you with the licensing process if you are unsure how to go about it. The licence needs to be organised at least three working days before you get married, and it expires after three months. Only one of you needs to complete the application, which can be done online at marriages.services.govt.nz. You will be sent the licence, and two copies of the Copy of Particulars of Marriage — a form with all the details of the people getting married. Give all three of these documents to your celebrant before your wedding. If you are having a registry ceremony after July 1 your celebrant will be sent the licence, and two copies of the Copy of Particulars of Marriage. If you decide to have a registry office ceremony, the cost at present is $240, and a standard set of vows are used. The event usually takes approximately 30 minutes and must be held during weekdays, excluding public holidays.

Fresh Flower Bouquets and Wedding Ideas

• Wedding and cake accessories • Venue dressing • Balloons, cards & soft toys • Flowering Plants

Once your application is processed, the registry office will keep your licence, and two copies of the Copy of Particulars of Marriage. You don’t need to do anything else until the ceremony. There are circumstances where people can’t legally marry, such as if you or your partner are already married or in a civil union unless you are changing your relationship with the same person. You cannot marry if you are closely related by birth, marriage or adoption or age under 16 years old. Same-sex marriages are legal in New Zealand, and most people can get a marriage licence. You don’t need to be a New Zealand citizen to get married, and visitors to

the country can marry or have a civil union here. It is important to have a back-up venue in your application because you can only have the ceremony in the places you have stated on the application.

WHO’S WHO IN WARKWORTH Walks to delight by Liz Clark

Art, heritage and nature are three fundamental things that make the historic township of Warkworth and its surrounds appealing to those wanting to beat the feet on one of the many great walks the area has to offer. For art lovers, Brick Bay Sculpture Walk located at Mahurangi West near Snells Beach showcases contemporary sculpture created by several of New Zealand’s leading and international artists. The winding trail leads visitors into a natural environment of native bush, wildlife and ponds to discover a dynamic exhibition of large-scale sculpture set in a stunning natural environment featuring native trees, wildlife and ponds. The walk takes around two hours at a leisurely pace. Warkworth abounds with a rich and diverse range of heritage sites, many within easy walking distance or a short drive away. Close by is the Mahurangi River Boardwalk following the river bank one of the highlights is the weir built in 1913 for the Wilson Cement Company. Many a generation of resident and visitors alike have taken delight swimming in its depths; a park alongside backed by native trees provides a pleasant and welcoming spot for a picnic or just taking in the view. Not too

far away is Kowhai Park Scenic Reserve, which was opened by Lord Bledisloe in 1934. A short streamside walk through native bush leads to brickwork lime kilns built in the 1880s. The township also has a walk and drive heritage trail map available from the Warkworth iSite. Admirers of nature are well catered for in the surrounding area and further afield. More than 300 coastal and bush walks for all fitness levels are located within easy reach of the main township. One location, in particular, offers the best of coastal sandy beaches, rare native species and a pleasant walking environment. Tawharanui Regional Park is situated on the Takatu Peninsula and combines farming, conservation and recreation in an ecological open sanctuary. If you want to take the family sprat fishing, take a picnic, lines and bait and drive out to Ti Point located near Leigh. The kids and grown-ups alike can enjoy an afternoon’s fishing on the wharf or take in the view of the Hauraki Gulf from the top of the reserve.

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

Originally known as Browns Mill, Warkworth was founded in 1853 by John Anderson Brown who named the area after his birthplace, a village in Northumberland, England. Known for its historic river setting, Warkworth is a growing rural community and one of the largest rural catchment towns in the northern part of Auckland. Initially, shipbuilding flourished with the ready supply of timber from the kauri forests, and early industry also included flour milling and the logging of kauri and other timbers. Early settlers developed orchards on land too poor for crops and made way for dairy and sheep farms in the 20th century. The first Por tland cement manufacturing works in the southern hemisphere, Wilson’s Cement Company, was established near the town in 1884 and the ruins still remain. The mine is now a popular local freshwater swimming hole. Today, the area serves as a gateway to the many villages and beaches along the Matakana and Kowhai Coasts, lifestyle blocks, retirement housing and holiday homes have become popular in the area. Land uses have evolved from shipbuilding and orchards to dairy and sheep farms with horticulture,

winemaking, dairying, tourism and forestry now key contributors to the local economy. For the next 30 years significant residential and employment growth is expected with some 1,100 hectares earmarked as future residential and business land. The development of quality transport links within Warkworth,

and between Warkworth, Northland and the rest of Auckland will be critical to supporting the town’s future growth. A structure plan for Warkworth will refine the staging and timing of development and will identify the mix and location of housing, employment, retail, commercial and community facilities.

EDUCATION ADVERTORIAL

Why visit the Packard Motor Museum? Why visit museums? We at the Packard Museum believe our primary role in the community is to engage, educate and inspire people. We love our visitors to find something on display that reminds them of their childhood or a friend or family member; even a significant event in their own life such as finding the same model of car they learnt to drive in. What if the ‘old stuff’ wasn’t preserved? The next generation would find it difficult to discover the type of jobs or lifestyle their grandmother or grandfather were involved in; and what about the cars they drove? One of the main comments we hear from people when they look at our cars is ‘how big they are’, or ‘how many (miles to the gallon) kilometres can they drive on a litre of petrol?’ These questions show how times have changed. In the early part of the twentieth century, there were many little towns scattered

throughout NZ that were little more than a petrol station, a general store and a post office. These big old cars (and trucks) didn’t travel as far on a litre of gas as the modern vehicles of today. Seeing the cars helps us understand why these little communities were in place. They serviced the automobiles travelling by, but as motor vehicles became more efficient at using fuel (part of this was by becoming smaller or lighter), many of these communities closed down. However, visiting a museum is more than learning about our past. According to an article by Colleen Dilenschneider, museums make you feel good. Paying for an experience such as visiting a museum, creates more happiness than buying material goods

M bovis ‘surge’ in operation

Colin Hawken

Mulching & Farm Consulting

by Andy Bryenton

The spectre of Mycoplasma bovis has been all too real for those in the rural sector.

• Farm Consulting • Mulching 027 490 2516 78 Valley Road, Waitoki RD 1, KAUKAPAKAPA 0871 colinhawken@gmail.com

With the cull tally approaching six figures (more than 90,000 cattle have had to be destroyed so far), the Ministry of Primary Industries has been proactive in enacting a plan to stop the spread of the disease. That led to promises of a ‘surge’, an uptick of properties investigated and potentially locked down for stock movement in an effort to quarantine and hence eradicate M bovis. MPI programme director Geoff Gwyn explained: “This is happening in a short period because of increased surveillance late last year, which has resulted in a peak in the number of highrisk properties that we have identified, and the desire to get ahead of the curve before autumn and winter stock movements get into full swing. “We will contact about 300 farmers as a priority over the next few weeks who have had high-risk animals move onto their property. “We would expect 250 of those to have Notice of Direction movement controls placed on them immediately and, following testing, that 10 per cent to 12 per cent may become Confirmed Properties.” In a stroke of good fortune, it now appears that far fewer than those 250

expected farms will be placed under restrictions. It’s a case of ‘better safe than sorry’ for the one billion dollar eradication programme, which has cleared 114 farms of M Bovis since July of 2017, out of 168 farms where it has been confirmed present. So far more than $57 million has been paid in compensation for loss of stock, but rural advocacy groups and mental health organisations warn that the added stress and strain, both

social, psychological and financial is an additional cost, which is hard to match with a dollar value. As the very busy June 1 and ‘Gypsy week’ season shows, movement of cattle, whether in bulk or individually, is vital to the health of the industry. MPI’s surge comes along with promises to work closely with farms under restrictions to meet their needs with regards essentials like feed, planning for a hopefully M bovis free future.

Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

Farmers take the lead on water Ask most people about the most important element needed for a productive farm, and they would likely say that it’s land, or possibly sunshine for photosynthesis; farmers, however, know that it’s water. Water is the engine driving healthy pasture growth, is necessary for animal health, is used to help break down effluent, to clean and to cool in the shed and to irrigate crops. That means it’s held in high regard. The news that this is likely to be drier than average winter with lower soil moisture and river flows will already be on the radar of the custodians of the land. Farmers are, in fact, responsible for the biggest voluntary environmental improvement project of the last decade. Since the publication of the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord in 2013, a raft of proposals from this document have been implemented, covering aspects from water usage through to effluent disposal and the exclusion of livestock from watercourses on Kiwi farms. Consider the sheer amount of creeks, rivers and streams running through our rural heartlands. Now process the fact that close to 98 per cent of them have been blocked to livestock. Riparian planting is also well advanced. The Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord was developed under the oversight of the Dairy Environment Leadership Group, comprising representatives from farmers, dairy companies, central government, regional councils and the Federation of Maori Authorities.

What we haven’t got we can get!

It has been a voluntary commitment by the industry. With commitments to better nutrient management, water use, irrigation infrastructure improvements, effluent processing and more, the accord is hitting targets, which were deemed difficult at the time. There are those who are ahead and those who are behind, often because (as in the vase of a corollary new standard, the improvement of milk chiller equipment) of overworked

third-party contractors. It’s getting done, which makes a difference on a considerable scale. Farmers may have a question of their own after this effort. Where is the accord for urban planners and authorities to work through their environmental responsibilities in the same way?

Animal welfare with MPI With winter now starting to bite, the Ministry for Primary Industries is reminding pastoral livestock farmers of their animal welfare responsibilities, whether animals are kept at home or sent off-farm to graze. “This time of year can be challenging for farmers, with wet and muddy conditions increasing risks to the welfare of their livestock,” says MPI manager animal welfare, Kate Littin. “Many farmers choose to break feed stock on crops over the winter months. It is a great way to provide food for animals and protect pastures but does require careful planning and good stockmanship to avoid welfare risks that wet weather can bring. New Zealand’s codes of animal welfare require livestock to have

access to areas free of surface water and mud, and appropriate shelter from adverse weather. Animals will refuse to lie down on wet ground and can then become stressed, stop eating and are more susceptible to lameness.” There are a number of ways farmers can mitigate risks to animal welfare during winter. “If there is a spell of extreme weather or prolonged wet conditions, you may need to move your stock off the crop to drier land, and you should plan for

this possibility — having a ‘plan B’ is the key. “Clean drinking water must be available for animals at all times. Owners are still responsible for the welfare of their stock while they are offfarm for winter grazing and should check on the conditions, including their access to shelter and water. When transitioning from pasture to crop and back again,

stock can be negatively affected. Ensuring you follow a gradual transition plan when moving your animals will prevent issues.” MPI recommends talking to your vet for help with planning and any animal health concerns. Response to review

Fonterra has acknowledged the outcome of the government’s review into the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act saying the proposed changes will bring some improvements to the sector. “While the government has recommended tweaks to the rules under which Fonterra has to give its farmers’ milk, effectively at cost price to foreignbacked competitors, the playing field is still tipped against New Zealand dairy farmers,” says Fonterra chairman, John Monaghan. “Our farmer-owned co-operative wants an industry that promotes investment across regional New Zealand and where profits are kept in New Zealand. We stand for an industry where New Zealand farmers are paid well for their milk and the unique attributes of our environment are protected and enhanced. “Given the significant increase in competition within the New Zealand dairy industry, we are disappointed the government did not recommend removing the requirement for us to supply our farmers’ milk to large, exportfocussed businesses altogether. “We welcome the government’s decision to give Fonterra the right to refuse membership to our co-op where a farm is unlikely to comply with our terms of supply, or where the farm is a new conversion. These changes will support our co-op’s ability to meet our customers’ demands and continue leading the industry toward a sustainable future for our farmers and the rural communities in which they live and farm.” “Fonterra supports greater pricing transparency across the industry and notes with interest the government’s decision that the minister of agriculture will be able to nominate one person to sit on Fonterra’s Milk Price Panel.

“I now have a workshop with a four-tonne hoist, this means I can do anti-corrosion treatments and SealX polymer coatings on vehicles including most motorhomes,” says Duran. SealX is a product that goes onto the exterior paintwork and melds with the paint meaning your vehicle is protected, and it gives the paint a hydrophobic property. “When it rains the water beads off, and bird droppings and road dirt cannot etch in. You can use a cloth and the SealX dry wash and wipe the dirt off. If you have clumps of mud on the vehicle, you remove the excess and wipe the residue away. There is no need to worry about waxing and UV rays don’t damage the clear coat. Headlights stay clear, and it disguises small scratches on the rain visors and bonnet protectors.” Problast also has a vinyl and rubber restorer, which restores the black trims that

It helps bring the trims back to life and looking brand new. “We still do mobile anti-corrosion treatments and sandblasting as well as having the workshop, and I am in the process of adding a sandblasting booth at the workshop. The workshop is a great addition to our business, and we are pleased to be able to help people with their projects. Highway Stabilisers are our biggest customer, and we have enjoyed helping with their equipment and vehicles.” Problast also works on marine vessels sandblasting, painting and applying anticorrosion treatments and is currently working on a 500 square metre barge blasting. “Our anti-corrosion treatments assist in extending

the lifespan of your vehicles, including diggers, bulldozers and tractors that may be outside not being used along with all marine vessels. Refuse and stock trucks get corroded rapidly by urine, faeces, and rubbish. Our applications help your assets last longer — we apply it, it penetrates the rust and stops it in its tracks. As long as it hasn’t failed the COF it can be saved. “I believe in the work I do, and if a job isn’t going to be done right, I would rather not do it. Smashing the odds In the mid-1980s, the small sports car was dead; only a few more shovelfuls of earth remained to be sadly placed atop a grave dug by the hot hatchback revolution, covering forever the likes of the Jensen Healey, MGB, Sunbeam Alpine and Triumph Spitfire. England’s great small roadsters had a proud history but were seen as outmoded by the more practical Golf GTIs and Peugeot 205s of the day, which packed meaty performance into a shopping cart frame. Of course, now those drop-top small cars are seen as classics. So, too, is the thing that replaced them. In 1989, the Mazda MX-5 was as strange a sight on the road as the Lamborghini Countach was in 1974. Critics said it was underpowered, too small, impractical and part of a tradition of small convertibles that nobody wanted anymore. It went on to sell 400,000 units. Moreover, while TR7s gently rusted and Alfa Spiders spent time on the hoist, the little Mazda delivered smiles reliably, with its pop up headlights, simple design, lightweight handling and just enough power to have fun with, but not enough to be scary.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

By the second generation, it may have become too popular. The more ignorantly minded labelled it as a ‘girl’s car’, thus insulting half the population with what turned out to be a compliment. Nevertheless, you can’t argue with quality, and naysayers were silenced decade after decade by the fact that the little Mazda is great fun to drive. Now, for 2019, the ‘retractable fastback’ shape of the latest MX-5 is

the best looking ever, and while other cars suffer from safety bloat (like the now tubby, wheezing ‘hot’ hatches, which replaced those old 205s and GTIs), the Mazda is still packed with a 1.5 litre engine and sharp handling to match its more aggressive looks. You may only get 97kw, but this isn’t a dragster. You get only two seats, but this isn’t an ‘all things to all people’ family wagon. The MX-5 continues a

Quad bike safety endorsed by Stuart Davidson

After nearly nine years of making and fitting Quadbars and putting up with the ‘she’ll be right mate’ brigade, who think they will never roll their quad because they have been riding one for years, we finally have breakthrough news from Worksafe, which is now satisfied with the results from lives and injuries saved by bolting a Crush Protection Device (CPD) to your bike. From the year 2000 to 2017, 81 people died on quad bikes; with 73 of those crushed under their machines. If they had fitted a CPD, they would be alive and well, and possibly only injured. Not dead. Now, we can get on with being sensible about quad bike safety with the backing of roll bar history, testing and Worksafe giving us a hand. Quite simply, you have a choice of two CPDs, Quadbar and Lifeguard. Both are recommended by Worksafe and

proven for many years by New Zealand, Canadian and Australian farmers. As the owner of Quadbar, I have no problem endorsing my competitor, as we both want to save your life — simple as that! Worksafe recommends that you fit one now and in the future is likely to enforce compliance if necessary. It is a change in mindset, but it is your life at stake, and you can’t put a price on that. I live my life with a spinal injury that makes it hard for me to get around, so probably I know what I am talking about.

A festival of style and power

100

Superlatives fail and big numbers cease to have any meaning when it comes to describing the feast of petrolhead delights, which has been assembled for this year’s CRC Speedshow. On July 20 and 21, Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds will light up with a massive display of the art, engineering and soul of the automotive universe, embracing the full arc of car, bike and custom culture. Each year this big event just keeps getting bigger, and for 2019 it’s overflowing. Into bikes? There’s the NZ Custom Motorcycle Show on-site. A fan of cutting edge car technology? Then you can be one of the first to see Toyota’s new Supra unboxed and ready to roar. Want to build the perfect garage? There’s a chrome rainbow of tools and tech to appreciate, but that’s far from being all. Presiding over the action (and the incorporated Teng Tools Grand National Rod and Custom Show) will be a true legend of automotive artistry and culture, Chip Foose. Known for his amazing auto designs, paintwork and attention to detail, the star of the show Overhaulin’ will be on-site to meet the public and to serve as a special guest judge, picking his favourite machine to win an exclusive award. Also receiving some well deserved time in the spotlight, Giltrap group will showcase half a century of Kiwi motorsport, in a display, which touches

IT’S NOT A TARGET

on all the big names in our racing hall of fame, from the track to the rally stage and beyond. The Giltrap name has stood behind our best and fastest for more than 50 years, and this year they’re bringing together the cars which built that legacy. As if all this is not enough, there’s also tyre smoke and thrills in the Wendy’s Live Action Arena, a staggering RetroO-Rama with quirky, vintage and cool things to buy, the outre autos of the Wild, Weird and Wacky display. There is also plenty of delicious hot food and cold drinks when it’s time to take a break from the visual feast.

To sum it all up, if you love motorsport, classic cars, custom bikes, chrome, flames and wild horsepower, then this is heaven on earth. Grab your tickets online now. The good folks who organise the CRC Speedshow have even given us a double pass to give away to you! Email us the answer to the following question with your name and mobile phone number to comp@integrity.nz and be in to win! Here’s the question: Which famous Hot Rod and custom designer will be in New Zealand for the CRC Speed Show in 2019?

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Old school beyond the book by Andy Bryenton

There’s a certain inevitability to modern utes and their quest to become more of a four-door sedan than that increasingly hard to find species; the actual four-door sedan. There are two groups bucking the trend. Those who are too old school to be followers and those who put function over fashion. Mahindra’s Pik-Up continues into its second generation firmly in the second camp; a machine that delivers on metrics such as value for money, rugged reliability and sheer expansive space. It’s not trying to be all things to all people, but the S10 iteration of the Indian ute is in good company when it comes to being what it is supposed to be, as hard as possible. Other slabsided, roomy, unapologetically 4x4 machines on the market include the ageless Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series and the Land Rover Defender, not to forget the Discovery and the G-Wagen. Not a bad line-up to be part of. Mahindra comes to the party with a lower price than any of those machines mentioned, and they pack a lot in for your dollar. Certainly, there is only the option for a single kind of transmission, but there’s nothing arduous about handling the six-speed manual with its hearty mechanical feel. You can choose two or four-wheel drive on the fly, but, as in old-school off-roaders, it’s necessary to stop to enter low ratio. When you do,

you’ll be rewarded with the ability to crawl, creep, climb and descend through the terrain, which would stump many other modern vehicles. There’s 330 Nm of torque to play with as well, so it’s easy to stay out of trouble. Then there’s the space. Massive and square-sided it may be, but that means more room for passengers, gear and

cargo. Plus, there’s a good reason those other legendary off-roaders (the G Merc, Landie and 70 Series) have that certain look. They have all been used by the armed forces in various nations. So there’s a hint. Mahindra’s deliberately different 4x4 ute has the bearing of a soldier; along with the old-school toughness and ability to back it up.
