The annual Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries report was released on June 11, and for Northland it has particular interest as it includes seafood for the first time. Seafood prices are holding up despite global economic conditions, due to strong demand out of China and Australia. Wild capture volumes are stable but aquaculture production is expected to increase in the medium term, the report says. However primary produce prices are falling from relatively high levels, but in general they remain quite favourable. “Production this past season has generally been good — even great for some — due to favourable climatic conditions.” said the ministry’s deputy Director-General Paul Stocks.. “Primary industries are continuing to sell more into Asia. With recessionary pressure in Europe, the trend towards Asia has turned into a stampede.” Dairy production increased significantly in the season just ended — 10% overall — as a result of regular rainfall over the summer and an increase in the herd. The milk price is still strong, but for 2012/13 a drop is expected due to weaker international demand and increased production in the European Union and United States. This year, favourable climate and pasture conditions have increased meat production in New Zealand.

Lamb schedule prices are falling back faster and further than the normal seasonal decline after a record high of $137 per lamb in November 2011. This is because price-conscious consumers in Europe have shifted to less expensive meats. Beef demand and schedule prices have held up because of robust demand from Asian markets, and falls in US and Australian production. Horticulture has faced more challenging conditions over the past year, due in part to its greater exposure to the European market.

A rustling side effect

3

by Paul Campbell

Rural crime — be it theft of static property, rustling, or other offences, has had an unusual side effect in Northland Sheep rustlers are being blamed for dumping animal remains in Northland streams, putting water quality at risk and costing the region’s ratepayers hundreds of dollars a time in clean-up costs. The Northland Regional Council’s environmental monitoring officer in Opua, Mike Nager, says there have been two instances where sheep skins and heads have been dumped into a stream near central Kaikohe. This follows an earlier such act, also in the Kaikohe area. “Locals believe rustlers are stealing sheep for food, butchering them in secret and then attempting to dispose of what remains of the evidence in the stream,” he said. “Another possibility is that the remains have been dumped by the sheep’s legitimate owner or owners in the mistaken belief they are able to do this legally.” Regional council staff have reported the incidents to Kaikohe police. Mr Nager says aside from the apparent thefts themselves, the dumped remains pose environmental risks, with associated water quality and odour issues. “It also costs ratepayers several hundred dollars each time to remove the remains and dispose of them properly.” Mr Nager warns as well as potential prosecution by the police for theft, the regional council will also consider instant fines or prosecution for breaches of its regional rules.

In rural New Zealand, statistics show that rustling of capital stock is continuing with people illegally hunting or poaching on farms to fill their freezers or on-sell meat. Other crime includes apparent theft to order of items such as quad bikes, tractor batteries and wool bales. But underlying theft can be other dangers and police advise that rural people should be cautious when approaching anyone thought to be encroaching on their land. Another good piece of advice is to consider investing in a security system for farm entry points. There are several on the market which can be found and ordered online.

angawhai olive growers Don Windley and Teresa Anderson from Echo Valley Olives are amongst the few in the North to make their living entirely from olives, producing 4500 litres of oil a year and creating a range of olive-derived beauty products. They say a recent Fair Go television expose on the poor quality of imported

“Since that thing on Fair Go a lot of people realise they are being conned by the oil in supermarkets. It’s not the true taste of olive oil. What is exported to New Zealand is supposed to be extra virgin oil, and often it isn’t. All New Zealand growers produce to the highest possible standard and quality. There is no second grade oil in New Zealand.” He says the effect has been immediate, with sales of his olive oil

olive oil has had a huge impact on raising awareness of the benefits of locally-produced extra-virgin oil. The programme found that major brands of imported oil on supermarket shelves failed sensory tests and had varying degrees of rancidity after being shipped around the world and stored badly. The big companies and the food industry have hit back, casting doubt on the tests, but Don has no doubt about the results.

The good oil — in storage

One of the groves at Echo Valley

through farmers markets in Mangawhai, Whangarei and Auckland up by 100 percent. He accepts growers like himself have a vested interest in talking up their product, but says nobody has accused him of running down European oil for commercial reasons. He says it is something growers here have been aware of for years. “The oil may have just made the minimum standard when it left Europe, he explains. “But then it comes 12,000 miles, across the equator, it may be stored in clear bottles — these are all factors which lead to deterioration. Don and Teresa manage to make a living on their beautiful 12 acre property with its 600 olive trees. They produce pure extra virgin oil from the various cultivars and also bring in other fruit from groves in Northland. But it can be tough to convince budget-conscious shoppers to pay twice as much for a bottle of local oil as they would for a top European brand.“In New Zealand we are struggling to make a living at it, says Don. “We can produce a very good quality product and it has won awards around the world. But we can’t compete on price. Production costs are high and we can’t get them down to the European level. Is it time for some protectionism? We would love to get some help

His vision for the young industry is that one day buying New Zealand oil will no longer be a ‘luxury purchase’ and shoppers will automatically choose it over foreign imports. If that happens, all the hard work he and Teresa have put in over the years will pay off.

Don says the strength of New Zealand olive oil is its clean, ‘verdant’ taste, which can be a little surprising for people used to milder European blends. But, once people get used to it, they can’t go back. He believes the single most helpful thing the government could do for growers is to launch a nationwide education programme on the taste and health benefits of New Zealand olive oil. He is convinced of its benefits, saying his own health is ‘100 percent better’ since he started drizzling olive oil on everything.

Oyster man bouncing back As a young man the dream of owning a dairy unit eluded oyster farmer Alan Tindall because it was too expensive

fter working for a short time on a sheep and beef unit, in the wool industry, and as a former MAF animal health officer, he saw that marine and land farming had similar principles, so the Russell-based businessman decided to go into farming oysters. “If the sun is shining, food still grows, even in the water,” says the philosophical 60-year-old former Cantabrian. Over the almost 35 years since, the oyster industry has not been without its challenges.

Alan is one of a number of farmers on a nationwide fight against a particularly destructive herpes virus that plagues the Pacific oyster industry. “The virus has killed about 80 percent of our oysters,” Alan says. The bug affects the young shellfish, leaving fewer left to grow into adults. If that wasn’t enough, a sewerage spill in the Waikare inlet eight years ago, affected part of Alan’s farm which became polluted and was systematically shut down in 2001 and

is now sold domestically to the hospitality trades such as restaurants and cafes as well as at farmers’ markets. The thing that gripes Alan the most is that the authorities don’t seem to have much sympathy over the sewerage spill. “In the industry we seemed to be seen as just a pain in the butt really, and they treated us like we just had to live with it, but it has affected a lot of our business.” He’s not alone with his concerns. TVNZ’s Closeup programme covered the oyster virus and the plight of the industry in a recent programme. Alan hopes the shellfish over time will breed a total immunity to the virus. He says MAF research doesn’t seem to have found a remedy for it either. “Some oysters seem to be affected and some are not,” he says. He has tried to supplement his stock by processing mussels he has grown himself as well as using stock from the Coromandel. His total farm is around 23 hectares but at present he’s only using six.

Alan Tindall and Alison Bradley working side by side in the shed

Pre-virus, there was good export trade to places like Australia, Noumea, Tahiti, some to the United States, and Japan. But exporting stopped early this year due to the shortage of shellfish. In earlier days, Alan’s farm was producing about 10 percent of the industry’s total production — some for the domestic market and some exported, and he employed 12 full-time staff then. Now, he has only five staff plus the help of his partner, Alison Bradley. During the summer months Pacific oysters spawn

Matakohe farmers break with family’s Romney tradition by Annette Lambly-Robinson

T

wenty two years ago, Matakohe sheep and beef farmers Sheryl and Peter Tonkin, purchased two — newly released from quarantine — Texel ewes (with lambs at foot), at an elite sale. The couple, disheartened by the poor fattening performance of the farm’s Romney flock, and having done their research, were convinced the new breed would improve profitability. The initial purchase lead to the acquisition of another 20 ewes and later a Texel sire to mate with 100 of the their top Romney ewes. It was a big step for the Tonkins — Peter’s family on his mother’s side had been farming Romney sheep at Eyton Farm for four generations. The farm, as it is today, had once been part of a larger complex farmed by the Coates brothers — Rodney, Peter’s grandfather and Gordon Coates — the nation’s first New Zealand born Prime Minister. Peter had grown up in the house (which still stands but is uninhabited) built for Gordon and his family to live in when he retired from Parliament. When he and Sheryl married 32 years ago they lived for a short time in the same house before shifting into a new house built in an adjacent paddock.

They purchased the 260 hectare property 20 years ago and currently run around 1000 Texel breeding ewes — 800 commercial and 200 stud ewes — and around 65 mixed-age Friesian bulls for the beef market. It’s been a good place to raise their three children Daniel, 30, Laura, 27 and Cain, 22. Farming, especially sheep farming has had its tough times and the couple have worked hard to keep the place afloat during difficult times. Peter often worked off the farm as a shearer and also did agricultural contracting to keep money coming in. Sheryl too has various jobs from barista to picking courgettes.

We are surprised “more people aren’t putting Texel rams over their ewes, especially for meat purposes

Peter and Sheryl say sheep farming has been a hard road at times

The sheep farming industry in New Zealand has been hit hard in the last 30 to 40 years. Once wool was this country’s most valuable export. For 89 of the 112 years between 1856 and 1967 it remained dominant, but by the early 1970s the outlook was not looking good. Britain joining the European Economic Community caused the first ‘oil shock’ which lifted the cost of transport and production. Wool prices fell because of competition from synthetic fibres and the start of a decline from which they have never recovered, except for a short time in the early 1980s.

In 1985–86 the Government suddenly removed all subsidies for farmers. Sheep numbers dropped precipitously. Ten years after their historic peak in 1982 they had fallen 25 percent and in the next decade they fell another 25 percent. In 1990 with wool prices still low, and the Romney underperforming, Peter and Sheryl began looking at alternative dual purpose breeds — ones that would catch the prime lamb markets while not having a detrimental affect on wool. The believed Texels were the answer — hardy, good foragers with an excellent feed conversion efficiency. The breed is adaptable to a variety of feed and climatic conditions and have large, prolific and well-muscled meat with a quality lean meat yield. Wool is fine, similar to a Perendale and is bulky. They adapted well to the rolling to hilly contoured land, whose limestone soils get ‘pretty’ wet in winter. “The ewes are good mothers and lamb easily — usually only single or twin lambs which means they grow well and are actually very intelligent (for sheep),” says Sheryl. Apart from hay and silage-making which is contracted out, the couple do all their own farm work including fencing .Shearing is done in October — Peter shearing the entire flock himself in the original woolshed with Sheryl doing all the wool handling. The sheep are dipped in a spray race for fly pre-summer and for lice pre-winter. Very little crutching is done prior to shearing as Texel stay relatively clean. They are pleased with the texels and in 2008 even visited Texel Island to see the breed in their homeland state. “We are surprised more people aren’t putting Texel rams over their ewes, especially for meat purposes,” says Peter. Eyton Farm sells their rams by private treaty. The couple are happy to talk to anyone considering a change or just wanting to know more about the breed.

Are your joints complaining? Joints are any part of the body where 2 or more bones meet. The main types of joints are the fibrous joints such as tooth sockets, those solely of cartilage such as vertebrae discs and thirdly the mobile synovial joints such as knees and shoulders. The most common problems that affect joints are accidental damage especially to these mobile joints, all forms of arthritis and specific problems with joint structures such as bursitis and tendonitis. Our knees and shoulders are incredibly complex synovial joints. Have a look at an anatomical image of a shoulder joint and you will see what I mean. There are tendons attached to bones, tendon sheaths to allow tendon movement, joint cavities with synovial fluid, little bags of lubricant called bursars and of course the cartilage covering the bones. All of these structures can cause problems including arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis. Osteoarthritis is the progressive loss of the cartilage that covers the ends of bones. The pain is as much caused by inflammation as the actual loss of cartilage. While there is obviously some wear and tear aspect to the disease the latest research suggests that this is a true disease process rather than just accumulated wear. Research in the last decade by K. Yudoh et al (2005) and C. Ziskoven et al (2010) indicates that the real cause may oxidative stress which then triggers inflammation. This concludes that free radicals damage the chondrocyte cells that make and support cartilage. If these cells are damaged and die this results in the erosion of cartilage. In other words osteoarthritis is much more like iron rusting away in the salt air. My approach to osteoarthritis is now based on this latest research and my own observations over many years. I take a “3 legged stool” approach. Firstly we add a range of antioxidants to combat the free radicals attacking joint cells. Secondly we add a range of anti-inflammatory compounds including Omega 3 and a number of plant based antiinflammatory compounds and thirdly specific amounts of joint supporting compounds such as Glucosamine and MSM. It is very important to get personalised and monitored advice because different joints respond to different doses of different compounds and of course everyone is different. Buyer beware Humates are now becoming a key ingredient in agriculture boosting soil and stock health and plant nutrition However buyer beware — good quality humates are not ground-up coal. At NZ Humates we only source high quality humates which are independently tested for their carbon, humic and fulvic content. Natural humates are widely regarded as a premier source of organic matter and are recognised as the most effective of all soil conditioners. They have a high cation exchange capacity and studies have shown that they also possess an excellent water-holding capacity. When humates/humic are mixed with fertiliser, they can dramatically increase mineral availability and uptake, and they are critical in facilitating efficient utilisation of calcium and phosphate. Raw humates with their humic and fulvic extracts are powerful microbial stimulants. Humic acid feeds and stimulates the fungi component of soil life, while fulvic acid is a bacterial stimulant.

Humates contain up to 69% organic carbon in their own right, but their carbon-building capacity is largely based on their bio-stimulating capacity. An activated, thriving, microbial population converts stubble and crop residues to organic carbon (humus) at a much faster rate. One ton of humic product is equal to approximately twenty tons of general compost in regard to humus and biological activity. The faster you can convert plant matter to humus, the higher the organic carbon gains. Humates can also have a profound effect upon soil structure, opening up compact and clay soils and aiding with the rapid exit of excess sodium and salts. NZ Humates raw humate is Biogro certified and is now available in bag sizes from 25kg, through to 1000 kilo and in bulk.

As the season is coming to an end, and with the new season approaching, there are some important things that we need to be taking into consideration in order to maximise our cows’ hoof health through this transitional time Hoof trimming does not stop laminitis but it does help to minimise the effects of laminitis. Trimming the cows at this time of the year means that they will have well-shaped feet by the time they calf, and therefore suffer less from calving-induced laminitis.

A number of farmers will have cows on winter crops. It is important to introduce cows onto, and wean off, these crops gradually with an ideal transition period of at least two weeks. The time when the cows are coming off the crop is particularly important because they are close to calving and calving induces laminitis, as does a quick change of diet, so there is a bigger risk factor at that time of year.

Remember that if the weight is distributed evenly over the claw then it is less likely for the outer claw to pack up due to the combination of overload and being sick. It is a bit like having a trailer with two really old tyres.

Lameness is a multi-factorial disease. The more factors that are below the mark, the more likely you are to have lameness problems. I appreciate that in some cases it is very difficult to wean cows onto a different diet especially when the cows are away grazing. However, it is important to keep these things in mind — it may be beneficial to use silage as the main part of the diet to help you with this transition. It would be a good idea to consult your nutritionist about the best ways to manage these issues.

When you load this trailer, but put the entire load on one side of the trailer then the tyre on the loaded side is much more likely to burst than the tyre on the other side. If you spread the load evenly over both tyres then you are less likely to end up with a flat tyre. It may still happen but it is less likely. In the same way, if you spread the weight of the cow over the two claws rather than letting the outer claw do most of the work you are less likely to end up with a lame cow.

The end of the season is also a good time to do some maintenance hoof trimming.

The reason why the outer claw usually does most of the

work is because it tends to grow bigger than the inner claw. This is why cows usually go lame on the outer claw. So if you trim the outer claw back to the same height as the inner claw then you are spreading the weight evenly over the two claws. This may sound like a very simple and easy process, but it actually takes a skilled hoof trimmer to get the balance right. Getting the most from your nutrients by Bob Cathcart, Land Management Specialist, Northland Regional Council

Fertiliser is one of the biggest costs on any farm and managing it carefully means best bang for your buck. Having a nutrient management plan, and implementing it properly, just makes good economic sense Under the Clean Streams Accord, dairy farmers were initially required to have a nutrient budget but this has been upgraded to a management plan. A nutrient management plan carefully matches a farm’s nutrient inputs — like imported feed, fertiliser, and bought-in stock — against outputs such as stock and products leaving the farm, leaching losses, and erosion products washed off the farm. The plan also looks at how nutrients are circulated, including the redistribution that occurs when effluent ponds are de-sludged or effluent is sprayed onto pasture, and when hay, silage and crops are harvested on one part of the farm and fed to

stock on another part. It is a stocktake that attempts to track the fate of nutrients. Major fertiliser companies prepare nutrient management plans for their clients, sitting down with them and working methodically through the modelling process. The fertiliser industry is very aware of the effects of over-fertilisation on our rivers and streams and on groundwater, and how that reflects on their industry. Nutrient management plans help ensure that nutrients are available only as needed and are not sitting around waiting to be leached from the soil. Small changes in management can significantly reduce soil and nutrient losses from your farming system —

New! ADR 500 Effluent Screening Plant

this is a direct saving for land owners and a benefit to water quality as well. Like all models, the plan is only as good as the data you put into it. Accurate soil maps, careful assessment of slope, rainfall data, paddock diaries that record numbers and classes of stock, hay, silage and other fodder crops, and rates and timing of effluent spreading are essential inputs. Don’t just tick another Accord box and put your nutrient management plan on the shelf. This must remain a ‘live’ model, being continually refined as you adjust your farming system. Discuss with your fertiliser rep how nutrient availability is affected by seasonal changes like droughts or extended cold wet periods and whether different forms of fertiliser may be more effective after these events. Discuss also what data you can easily collect to refine your plan.

Dairying Getting grass faster in winter by Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

As soil temperatures and sunlight hours drop, plants have less energy for growth. We can boost growth with fertiliser N, but plants struggle to turn the N into growth. For example, in the warmer seasons, a kg of N as granular urea will produce 10-20 kg of additional dry matter. In winter this drops to as low as 4-8 kg, which is often uneconomic The way to maximise responses in winter is to minimise the energy the plant needs to expend to get fertiliser N into the plant, and in a form it can turn into protein as easily as possible. Plants, and this includes pasture plants, can take up urea directly through the leaves, provided it is in liquid or solution form. The application rate must not be excessively high as this can cause leaf burn as the leaf surface dries out during the day. It is very important to include a urease inhibitor — otherwise urease enzyme on the plant leaves can result in much of the urea being

converted to ammonia gas and lost to the atmosphere. Once inside the plant, urea can be processed into ammonium-N and then amino acids — the building block of protein — with less energy consumption by the plant than pulling nitrate-N up through the roots and then reducing the nitrate to ammonium-N. Up to 40kg of additional DM can be produced with each kg of N applied in this way. This much higher efficiency gives several advantages, including lower costs per additional kg of DM, greatly reduced losses to the environment, and the ability to add in trace elements and sulphur (S), gibberellic acid (GA3), pasture weed sprays and so on.

When GA3 is applied by itself, the potential response is often limited because the plant roots can not take up the extra N and S needed to build the DM that the GA3 is ‘instructing’ it to do. Applying N, along with S and trace elements if needed, with the GA3 fixes that.

Calf scours! Remember Rotagen this spring! specific antibodies against specific pathogens — (Rotagen Combo) — is a registered animal remedy. The Rotagen Combo range is based on Globigen, a spraydried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s specific to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10, As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period. The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. It can be used to both prevent and treat specific calf scours. A recent addition to the range is Rotagen Crypto, a cryptosporidium specific treatment for calves. Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This is particularly useful in cases where the herd

has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves. Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for five days. For treatment, dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the first day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days. Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding.

Keeping the wheels of industry turning Primary industries drive the economy of the Kaipara District – from our fertile farmlands and dairy herds to the pine forests which render tons of export timber per day, this part of New Zealand is all about the land Hard working people and hard working machines make it all possible. The technology employed by the farming and forestry industries (as well as the road transport industry which backs them up) now are so far in advance of last century’s standards that any downtime means a serious loss of revenue. To put it another way, even the most complex million-dollar machine can be brought low by a flat tyre! Since the early 1990s the big names

in agriculture, forestry and transport have turned to the same people to keep their fleets mobile and productive. The team at Gas and Tyre Services, based in Dargaville, have three mobile fleet trucks out and about to keep the wheels of industry turning, and their reputation for swift, affordable and knowledgeable service has seen them go from strength to strength. A big part of their reputation comes down to an in-depth understanding of machinery and the harsh toll the

environment takes on it. From the smallest car to immense skidders, rollers and diggers the Gas and Tyre team can pick the right tyre and the right lubricant, and have them on site before downtime eats into those vital profit margins. The best proof that Gas and Tyre Services are the right choice comes from their customers who are unreserved in their respect and appreciation for the hard work the Gas and Tyre team put in. When you’re felling timber, cultivating fields or hauling stock, time is money and the hours are long, and Gas and Tyre Services have consistently gone above and beyond expectation to meet these demanding conditions. Recently their Dargaville hub has been expanded to offer a combined faster turnaround and a greater stock holding for commercial clients — a

move that backs up their commitment to service. After all, the tyres and lubricants which Gas and Tyre offer are a vital link in the chain which is bringing prosperity to the Kaipara and all of Northland.

We’ve got EXPERIENCE where it counts Forestry, Agricultural & Transport Fleet Emergency Breakdown Service Morris & Stirling Lubricant Range Servicing ALL of the North. With 25 years experience supporting local industry, we’ve got the skills to keep you moving.

Punching above its weight since 1979 Just outside of Christchurch in 1979 experiments and tests were taking place which would change Kiwi farming for the next three decades At their not-too-sacred test facility at Tai Tapu (it was a working sheep and beef farm), Yamaha had gathered information from New Zealand farmers

to refine a small, nimble and economical motorcycle suited to our nation’s sometimes harrowing conditions. The result was an instant success, and it’s become part of the farming landscape in the intervening years — the Yamaha AG 100. This lighty yet sturdy machine gives away power and top speed (which are little use through the

mud) for light weight, extracting almost unbelievable torque and traction from its gutsy little 98cc engine. While this smaller, two-stroke engine size means that the AG 100 is unlikely to win any drag races, it’s proven perfect for rugged terrain and indispensible to the Kiwi agricultural sector. The AG 100 can go places a quad just can’t — winding sheep tracks, narrow ridgelines, steep banks and gullies — and it can do so with a fairly hefty

rider and his gear on board too. Over the years farmers have found that the AG 100 will speedily get them almost anywhere they want to go on the farm, and while no bike has the carrying capacity of a UTV or ute, there’s room for a huge amount onboard. Small tweaks and innovations to the original 1973 Yamaha AG which became a rural favourite still speak of the input of real working farmers. A big, flat-based stand allows parking on inclines. A handy clutch lock makes getting on and off to open gates a breeze. By enclosing the chain Yamaha have extended its operation lifespan and prevented tangling it up in the gnarly debris nature seems to put in the way sometimes. But most important of all is the clever gearing of the AG 100, which gives it stable, strong pull in first — a must for hilly, muddy, generally rugged country. You’ll often see one of the blue bikes keeping pace with a herd of cows on a foggy morning, just nudging them along through the mud and wet grass — that super-low first is how it’s done. Putting neutral at the bottom of the box was another good idea

The ‘Rolls Royce of Agriculture’ is here! Back in 1937 Rolls Royce were already known as the makers of the world’s finest automobiles. But in that same year Xaver Fendt began designing and building agcricultural machinery, and the two companies were set on an inevitable collision course. Why? Because like the engineers at Rolls Royce, Fendt’s mission was to build the very best Fast forward to the present day, and Rolls Royce are still ahead of the game, with their luxurious Phantom the car of choice for celebrities. The thing is, the iconic British marque is now actually engineered in Germany — just like Fendt tractors. That’s because German engineering is a byword for precision and quality, and when it comes to tractors, that’s still Fendt’s mission. Over the years Fendt have been innovators, developing the now-famous ‘continuously variable drive’ in the 1970s as a means to improve tractor performance. The patented Fendt Vario is the only truly stepless transmission available on tractors to this day, and its smooth delivery of power despite the most challenging of conditions has put Fendt in a class of one at the forefront of agricultural technology. Building on this key strength, Fendt have secured world-record breaking status for both their 828 Vario

and 936 Vario in DLG Powermix competitive tests. These tests are run by the German Agcricultural Society (DLG means Deutsche LandwirtschaftsGesellschaft) and put tractors through their paces in the field to determine performance and fuel economy. Key to the success of Fendt has been a combination of engineering innovation and driver comfort — the real reason these machines have been called the ‘Rolls Royce of tractors’. Long days and the sometimes highly technical nature of modern farming mean that the operator of a 21st century tractor needs to remain alert and on his game — which Fendt achieves by creating a supremely comfortable working environment inside the cab. Not content with resting on their laurels, Fendt stunned the 2011 Agritechnica fair in Europe with the unveiling of the Trisix — a futuristic six-wheeled tractor packed with new technical innovations and boasting TWO vario drives and a tiny turning circle for its powerful size. Right now this machine is just a prototype, but considering Fendt’s track record of leading the way, it could be the template for the tractrors of the future. Fendt have a strong following among New Zealand farmers, and one test drive will show you why some in the agricultural sector call Rolls Royce ‘the Fendt Vario of automobiles’.

Mitsubishi Triton Charger X — Charging ahead for field days

But there is a sense, with the new Mitsubishi Triton Charger X that the iconic Japanese brand have sat down with Kiwi working men and asked them what they actually want from a ute.

immediately that it has been built mansized. Class-leading headroom and legroom in the back mean that it won’t seem like relegation to sit behind the front row — it’s comfy and tidy throughout, in fact, with materials and surfaces designed to wipe clean even if they catch some mud. The dials and switches are mansized too — sturdy and easy to read, with all the useful tech included (aircon, Bluetooth, a beefy stereo) but all fripperies shorn away to leave a look that’s less sparse than it is spartan. In the sense of 300 — rugged and nononsense. Even the five-speed manual gearstick snicks between gears with the satisfying movement of well-engineered steel, and it’s not dressed up in excess wood or chrome. Outside there is a touch of the silver stuff nicely accenting the grille, the door handles and the mirrors (visibility is great from the driver’s seat too, even

through the back window), and the Triton looks assured and solid. Not slab-sidedly American, not ostentatiously European — but like a working ute. Which brings us to the ride and the power. There is a definite sense that this is a truck you’re commanding — though the turbo diesel has miniscule lag and the aforementioned 5-speed is militarily accurate you couldn’t be fooled into thinking this is granny’s shopping bubble. The solid 407 Newton Metres of torque pumped out from under the hood are clearly apparent, though with a tap of the toe the Triton muscles up to cruising speed for a smooth ride. People are sure to make comparisons with the Navara, the Hilux, and the BT50, but consider this. Spec for spec the Triton punches far above the weight of its special Field Days’ price of only $35,990 including GST and on road costs. AND because it’s a Mistubishi, you gain the coverage of a huge Diamond Advantage warranty.

Lower North Monitor Farm Field-day — new frontiers

21

Gareth Baynham, AgFirst Northland, Facilitator, Beef + Lamb Lower North Monitor Farm

The Beef + Lamb New Zealand Lower North Monitor farm has a field-day coming up on the 22nd June 2012 from 10:30am — 3:30pm looking at some exciting aspects of Sheep and Beef Farming in the North, including winter crop options for cattle and an overview of sheep and beef markets from the specialist market analyst, Rebecca Redmond from Rabobank Daniel and Nicola Bergers are nearly 18 months into their three-year term as the Lower North Monitor Farm. The Bergers farm a mixture of leased and owned properties with a total effective area of 600 ha, split over five blocks.

Rebecca Redmond from Rabobank. Rebecca is a specialist analyst dealing with animal proteins, specifically sheep and beef meat. We’ll be getting an update on the latest market trends and Rebecca will be answering your questions on the markets.

On the 22nd June we’ll be visiting their leased property near Tauhoa, where the Bergers are planning to run Friesian bulls on winter crop for the first time. This will be the community group’s first look at the winter crop, which has potential to change how we winter cattle in Northland.

James Parsons, Director of Beef + Lamb NZ will give an update on the Red Meat Sector Strategy and emerging opportunities for the sector and people will be taking home an animal health plan that can be adapted for their farm.

We’ll be getting an update on the cost and yield of the crop. Winter cropping is relatively rare in Northland, so we’ll be following this closely. We’ll also be getting an update from the Bergers about their plans for the winter and spring, and how they are managing purchases given the high store prices. The afternoon session will be held at the Tauhoa Hall where we’ll hear from our key note speaker,

The field-day will finish around 3:30pm with a BBQ and social time. The field-day starts at 10:30am sharp at the Ryburn farm (3946 Kaipara Coast Highway (SH16), Tauhoa. The afternoon will be at the Tauhoa Hall (corner of Naumai Rd and State Highway 16, Tauhoa) from 1pm — 3:30pm. Keeping dogs fit and healthy Dogs need regular outdoor exercise, even in the depths of winter. Though it may not be so appealing for you to go out on a cold, wet day, your dog still needs a run around. So wrap up warm and head out – your dog will love you for it! I also like to grab myself a hot takeaway coffee on the way home, so it’s a sneaky treat for me too! Nourishment Well-nourished dogs are better prepared to withstand the cold winter winds. Dogs may need a little more food than normal to generate enough energy to stay warm, particularly if they’re kept outdoors. Provide your dog with fresh water several times during the day, and if you’re in an area where water can freeze, you can purchase an electrically heated water bowl (they’re safe, I promise!).

“This is a great course for anyone with a passion for plants. You get out there, meet people with the same interest, and gain knowledge.”

Sustainable Rural Development • Certificate in Sustainable Rural Development - Level 2, 3 and 4

The temperature is starting to drop, and winter ills and chills aren’t exclusive to humans! Dogs also need a bit of TLC to get them through the winter cold, and Beth Bryant from Purina New Zealand has some top tips for looking after your pup this season.

Come in and find out what NorthTec has on offer for Semester 2.

Shelter If pets usually sleep outside, it may be time to bring them indoors. Put dog kennels in the garage or the laundry, and consider adding an extra blanket to their bed. If dogs are kept outside, make sure their shelter is insulated, elevated, protected from prevailing winds and watertight. The shelter should also be small enough to preserve the dog’s body heat, but large enough to be comfortable. Warm clothing Dog clothes aren’t just a fashion statement reserved for Chihuahua-toting celebrities! Short-haired dogs, senior dogs, puppies and dogs with health problems are more prone to the cold, so may need a dog jacket to keep them warm. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet this winter, Purina New Zealand offers a FREE advice service at 0800 PET VIP (0800 738 847). A dedicated team of pet care experts, including veterinary nurses and animal behaviourists, is available to offer advice and support on a wide range of pet care questions, from health and nutrition to behaviour, training and socialisation, as well as information about Purina products.

Be my Guest

23

Bill Guest, Farmers of New Zealand

Farmers are an exceptional breed of people Farming creates 85% of New Zealand’s gross income and is owned and controlled by approximately 6% of New Zealand’s population

retentions will mean that Northland dairy farmers’ incomes will have reduced by some $200 million from the $8.10/kg milk solids payout received a year ago. With on-farm costs of $3.90 to $4.10/ kg milk solids and an opening advance rate of $3.85 until 20 February 2013, this will mean that dairy farmers will be seriously strapped for cash and will mean minimum discretionary spending. Urban businesses will suffer dramatically. With district councils’ proposed substantial increases in rates, many

will be unable to meet their financial commitments. Kaipara farmers who have purchased farms in the past four to five years have had their properties devalued by up to 24% by Quotable Value NZ and this has destroyed what equity they had. It is important that we farmers cooperate and unite in defending our businesses, our livelihoods, from those who simply see farming as the means of funding their ever-increasing demands. Stand up and fight.

Septic Tank Owners It is a hard business. Incomes are like the high and low tide, which can change quickly and dramatically. New Zealand farmers are the cornerstone of the New Zealand economy and are well known world-wide for their co-operating nature in selling their product. But have farmers become too trusting and place too much faith that the rest of New Zealand will recognise the public good that farming provides for the New Zealand economy. Farming is continually under threat by the majority of urban based consultants and environmentalists, many of them wanting environmental controls placed on the industry. We are currently under siege from district councils, who are trying to introduce targeted roading rates, which will see overall rates soar thousands of dollars for some sectors, forestry and dairy farming, due mainly to higher roading charges, and also decrease for others in a very inequitable way. The Local Government Act requires councils to analyse the impact of increased rates in regard to affordability of the ratepayer to meet such increases. Council bureaucrats are telling elected councillors in their consideration of submissions, that there needs to be consideration for the expectation of the silent majority who don’t submit to

district plans, the presumption being that the community may strongly support proposed activities, but did not see the need to submit because of council support in promoting the activity in their draft plans. However, Farmers of New Zealand believes that many councils’ consultation processes are seriously flawed. Some councils, the Kaipara District Council in Northland in particular, have short-cut the required legal procedures by failing to give submitters adequate notice of submission hearings. It can only be described as a fiasco and illegal. The Minister of Local Government has stepped in at Kaipara over the rates debacle and forced the Kaipara District Council to accept a Ministerial review team headed by former Fonterra director Mr Greg Gent. Farmers of New Zealand believes that if this ministerial review team is not installed with the necessary powers to intervene in the council leadership, we will see little improvement. Fonterra’s announcement this week, that 30 cents per kilogram of milk solids, is going to be deducted from the current 2011/2012 season’s milk payout, will slice $30,000 off the average dairy farmer’s income. The payout forecast for the forthcoming 2012/2013 season of $5.95 to $6.05/kg milk solids before

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and

b blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™.

For a warmer winter Before you turn on your heating this winter, have you considered the basics of warming your home?

Would you like to wake up in a warm house this winter? If your house was built before 1991, it probably is one of the reported 960,000 homes in New Zealand that does not have wall insulation.

Insulation in your ceiling and walls creates the fundamental basics for warming your home

6 REASONS why now is a great time to insulate

• Within a matter of days you can transform your house into a cozy home. • Become more efficient with your heating and cooling costs. • Create a healthier environment for your family; stop cold draughts in your home. • Significantly reduce condensation and reduce mould and dampness. • Once Airfoam is installed you will notice significant sound dampening qualities.

Many homes built in NZ before 1991 have no insulation in the walls. While roof and under floor insulation is widely used, unless your ceilings and walls are properly insulated up to 70% of the heat in your home is being lost. A common misunderstanding of how insulation works is the belief that if you just insulate the ceiling of an un-insulated house, you will save 35-40% of your heat. This is simply not possible, as heat rises and if it can’t escape through the ceiling (because it is insulated), then it simply travels across the ceiling to the walls to seek an alternative escape route and finding no insulation barrier it exits through the walls. This means a drop in temperature creating condensation and cold draughts that cause mildew and damp on the walls and making it difficult to keep the whole house warm. There is a cost effective and very efficient way to reduce this problem. Insulating the walls will help prevent heat loss, reduce dampness and mould plus provide sound proofing, and as well as keeping your house warm during the winter it regulates the temperature during the summer. Airfoam Wall Insulation has been insulating walls of existing homes for more than thirty years and over 15,000 homeowners now enjoy the basic requirement of an insulated home.

• No interest or very low interest repayments available with the Energy Saver Fund specifically for Airfoam Wall Insulation.

On the moove again…

Curl up with a good book . . .

…The year in review… On the moove again Welcome to this months column. At the time of Tony Grindle writing we are still performing unusually late marketing campaigns of dairy farms. Normally the dairy sales season has come to a halt by mid April, here we are in June and we are still marketing good dairy farms that will be settled into the beginning of the next season. We have experienced a lift in enquiry for all facets of farms, for the past 6 months Bayleys Northland Country have had a record season selling dairy, drystock, finishing and lifestyle properties, a sign that our vibrant team are making real inroads, underlined by a market share of 72% of dairy farms for the past 6 months. As we enter the Winter months we begin to look towards and plan for the Spring marketing period. It is at this time wise to look back at the lessons that can be obtained from the past season. As I write this I am aware of those fortunate dairy farmers that were able to sell their dairy farms and move onto the next stage in their lives. I say fortunate enough to be able to sell, because the market volatility dictated a decrease in all agriculture based commodity values and consequently a downgrade in the forecast for the Fonterra payout. It is interesting if we compare

the sale’s achieved for this year, compared with the previous in the Northland market.

Of the 11 dairy farms sold this year half of those were in the Kaipara, the remainder in the Whangarei and far north areas. This is the lowest number of dairy farms transacted in 10 years. For the 2010-2011 season 12 dairy farms were sold, for the 2009-2010 season 13 dairy farms had new owners, and for the 2009-2008 season 18 dairy farms traded in Northland. What is surprising is the timing of the sales, in all 4 years over 90% of the transactions were performed in the late summerautumn period. What will the new season hold? Conversations with rural bankers, accountants and receivers support our view that we will see the number of transactions lift; this is as a result of an increase in listings and corporate recovery type sales. We have a good database of qualified buyers, some of whom are bound to take advantage of the competitively priced and investment opportunities that some of these properties will present. If you want to be kept up to date with the latest developments in Rural real estate, send your details and I will include you on the monthly news release. Kind regards

This year’s Karikari Kontiki Klassic has so far drawn 32 teams, all eager for a chance to reel in the big fish and vying to take home a share of the $10,000 worth of trophies, prizes and lucky draws up for grabs Competing in teams of four, entrants have three days of fishing to land the best Snapper, Kahawai and other prime species to claim the Karikari Kontiki Championship title. Last year’s overall winning team, Charlies Angels, reeled in 34.98 kg of fish over the three days including the heaviest Kahawai and a 1.12kg Mackerel in the Heaviest Other section. But it’s not just the biggest fish species that earn competitors the prizes. Spokesman Mark de Lacy (aka ‘The Minstrel’) said major prizes for mystery weights and spot prizes are awarded throughout the three-day competition. Competitors are also encouraged to choose a team theme and dress accordingly to be judged for a prize.

“The competition is a fun event with a very friendly atmosphere,” said Mark. Event organisers Harris and Jeanette Narbey promote a beach clean-up during the competition with teams given bags to collect rubbish off the beach. Prizes are awarded for this as well. “We try to keep it as environmentally friendly as possible,” said Mark. Now into its third year, the Karikari Kontiki Klassic is fast growing in popularity with teams travelling from as far south as Taranaki and Waikato for the event. “The Karikari Peninsula is regarded as a fishing mecca of the world,” said Mark. From the competition base at Whatuwhiwhi Top 10 Holiday Park on the Karikari Peninsula, the event kicks

off on July 11 at 7pm with a briefing and BBQ. Fishing starts each day at 6am from July 12 and continues until 4pm with the weigh station closing at 5pm. A daily prize-giving and BBQ is held at 7pm followed by entertainment with The Minstrel. The format of the competition allows entrants to meet and enjoy the company of other fishing enthusiasts. Fishing concludes at 3.30pm on the final day of the event with the weigh station closing at 4.30pm. Final prizegiving and a spit roast will be held at 8pm. The competition, which is limited to 40 teams, has just a few vacancies left for entries.

A major reason for holding this competition is to collect data for the use in the management of the fishery. Last year the trout caught at the fishing competition produced the best average fish weights since 1993. Angler Andrew Dalton won the two-day competition with a 2.6kg Rainbow trout. With fishermen having a successful summer catching over 2kg fish on a regular basis, we look forward to seeing the sizes of fish caught by contestants this year. A BBQ and prize giving will be at the completion of the competition. Come and enjoy a bit of friendly competition and camaraderie amongst your fellow fishermen. This winter – call the professionals! Farming is a varied industry, and it’s almost impossible these days to be an expert in every discipline needed to cultivate the land. Technology, finance, training, machinery — sometimes you’re going to need help, advice or specialist services to get the job done right On these pages you’ll find a roll-call of local businesses who make a great team when they put their knowledge and experience together with yours. From the very latest in innovations to tried and tested companies who are household names, we’ve brought them together to offer a veritable ‘who’s who’ of who to call this winter for all your agri-business needs. Winter means rain, and that often means local plumbers are in big demand. Dreadon and Kelliher are some of Northland’s ‘most wanted’ when it comes to plumbing, septic tanks and draining — they don’t just install and maintain those vital systems under your feet, they can also design septic systems with tanks up to 4,500 litres in capacity. Rain also means it’s time to check those gutters — leaves, moss, twigs and debris can build up over the summer leading to unexpected spills and blockages when the heavens open. To prevent this kind of mess, a call to Gutter Solutionz is just the ticket — their innovative

Tangle free fence standards The frustration of untangling electric fence standards has been solved by Geoff Pearson and his invention the PIGGYSTAK™

The PIGGYSTAK™ name was inspired by the jargon term Pigtails or Piggysticks, a term many farmers call their fence standards. Mr Pearson has been using the Piggystaks and fence standards with his ROCKUP Adventure business and property for several years and decided to launch the product at Mystery Creek Fieldays after getting so many positive comments and interest from groundsmen, farmers, schools, equestrian and sports clubs. He has received great feedback from farmers at Fieldays to the point of having to make up additional stock onsite each year to cater to the demand.

than downtime during a patch of winter sunshine — except perhaps a breakdown in the rain. Keeping the Northland farming community going in the colder months is a job for tractor, UTV and quad specialists, and no matter what the size of the machine, it’s always good to know that your supplier and mechanic are the best for the job. When it comes to Can Am quads and UTVs Poland Motors are the place to visit — not only do they carry an extensive range of new vehicles from this leading brand, they have affordable pre-owned quads as well. Can Am has been building a reputation for rugged dependability in New Zealand, and Poland Motors are part of the reason why. continued on page 32…

Another must-have for farmers is a reliable Sharp Knife — not only is this a tool with a time honoured pedigree, it’s useful in so many situations and for innumerable tasks. But it’s no good blunt, which is why it’s a great idea to check out www.scarysharp. co.nz — the home of scary sharp knives with a real edge on the competition! Their sharpening system must be seen to be believed, and it means no more sawing away with blunt steel. Another company staying sharp are Croft Poles, and the by-product of their production can be just as useful as the tough timber poles they’re famed for this time of year. Post peelings don’t just make for easy to maintain and attractive landscaped gardens — they’re also the perfect foundation for your feed pads over winter. Winter is a season when things are on the move across Northland — from machinery to livestock and to whole buildings! Luckily we have at our disposal utter

some of the top names in the field of road transport — whatever you need delivered, shifted, picked up or dropped off these guys can get the wheels in motion. Hilders Transport and United Livestock are on the road every day turning livestock into profits for Northland farmers, while you may very well have seen Haines House Haulage tackling a big move behind a very necessary ‘wide load’ sign — they specialise in the transportation of entire homes! When a job on the farm calls for big machinery, you’ll find Tracta Tranz are up to the challenge, delivering even the heaviest equipment without a hitch. And if you need extra room fast — a sleepout, an office on site, some extra accomodation — then Modcom Portable Buildings have just the thing to meet your requirements, and it all fits handily on the back of a truck. For a transport solution you can rely on, these companies have got you covered! Winter’s also a season when you want your own machinery to keep moving — there’s nothing worse

One brand which already carries a huge weight of respect among farmers is John Deere — and in Northland your John Deere experts are Fieldpower Northland. Their advanced and meticulous service programme backs up the legendary performance of John Deere’s big green machines, and a visit to their workshop now will keep your tractor running smoothly right through until spring. Of course farming isn’t all about horsepower — some of the most vital skills for running a successful agribusiness are more intellectual than mechanical. Whitelaw Weber Ltd prove this adage true by providing a range of accountancy and financial services to Northland farmers, without which it would be simply impossible to realise those plans for the future. The team at this forward-thinking firm of business advisors and chartered accountants cover

all aspects of financial know-how in the rural sector, and they’re the right choice to help you work through the figures for your business. Also adding to the knowledge pool of Northland famers is Telford — the tertiary educator with close links to the land and a programme of ag-related study courses from rural business management to forestry and more. Check out their awesome Apiculture course coming up soon — bees are not only fascinating, they are key pollinators and a vital link in the chain of biodiversity. Finally, it’s time to relax and kick back with a little adventure. A clear, crisp winter day is the perfect time to experience the amazing views of Northland — while jumping out of an aeroplane! Ballistic Blondes make skydiving fun and safe, and you’ll never forget the rush — with fewer tourists there’s less of a wait to experience this ultimate thrill.

Open Day: for a future in bee keeping — Kaitaia An Apiculture (bee keeping) open day is being held on Monday 25 June in Kaitaia for anyone interested in the art and science of bee keeping — and a career in a developing industry The open day will showcase the Certificate in Apiculture run by Telford, a division of Lincoln University. Telford operates mainly from the South Island campus but the Certificate in Apiculture is taught in the North Island and opens up a wide range of career options. Industry pathways include working with Manuka honey and medicinal honey products — right through to the packing/distribution industry. The Certificate in Apiculture is offered in Northland because it is deemed the centre of the ‘Medical Grade Manuka Industry’ — a growing industry that has yet to reach its full potential. Telford’s certificate course runs for 37 weeks from the end of January until November. The emphasis is on both theoretical and practical learning — and the course involves work experience with commercial beekeepers. Telford owns 350

Langstroth bee hives, ‘a national commercial standard hive’, that are utilised to show a full year’s bee hive management, and to teach students how to safely handle bees as well as best practice around manipulation of hives. Students learn skills that can be transferred to many areas of the industry as well as those practical hands-on skills needed to own or operate small to large scale apiculture operations in New Zealand or overseas. Anyone interested in a career in apiculture should attend the open day — whatever their age or background. To-date students have ranged from 16 to 68 years old and include people changing career path, brushing up on industry skills, or starting out from school. On completion of the course students will have Telford’s Level 3 Certificate in Apiculture. For more information contact Debra Hollows on 0800 835 367 Open Day summary
