The couple established the Mataia Restoration Project in 2006 and retired 400ha of their 1,300ha of land from farming for ecological purposes.

With the help of the community, school groups and an army of volunteers, they have been doing extensive pest and predator control as well as stream fencing and native planting.

“To be able to hear the kiwi call at night is something I will treasure,” says Gill Adshead, “There were many people who helped us create the environment for these endangered birds. While these kiwi may be on our land, they don’t belong to us. They are for everyone.” The kiwi were relocated from Motuora Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf as part of Kiwis for Kiwi initiative.

Minister weighs in with oyster recovery by Andy Bryenton

MP, Mike Sabin, has first hand knowledge of just how hard our local Northland oyster farmers work on a typical day at sea — last year he visited a working oyster farm in the Waikare inlet as part of his mission to experience ‘a day in the life’ of his constituents. But the industry — once worth millions of dollars to the region — has suffered terribly over the past decade due to a viral infection killing off the valuable seafood before it could grow. All that is changing thanks to ‘Project Oyster Shell’, a large scale modernisation and revitalisation effort, and a $407,000 grant from the Ministry for Primary Industry seeking to fast-track a selective breeding programme and build immunity to the virus. Now Mr Sabin is pleased to announce that special permits may be issued to some farmers to gather wild oysters, boosting the industry at this time of transition. “I have had a number of meetings with Northland oyster farmers over the past 18 months and have a great deal of empathy for their plight with this virus devastating their spawning stock and putting the industry on its knees, so this decision will be a real boost for local farmers,“ says Mr Sabin. “Famers raised the question with me of harvesting ‘feral’ oysters as a potential means for them to remain viable while solutions to the virus were being developed — something I talked over with the Minister and officials.”

As it currently stands, oyster farmers are only able to gather feral oysters if they have a commercial fishing permit — not a true solution to the issue, as it is uneconomical for many of the affected farmers to secure such a permit. In approving the special permit purpose, Minister for Primary Industry, Nathan Guy, acknowledged the unusual and special circumstances of this particular situation,

providing a cost effective mechanism for farmers to recover while they try to rebuild their industry. “I am also very glad to see that Ministry for Primary Industry will waive the special permit application fee, which will further assist oyster farmers through this difficult period,” said Mr Sabin.

The Te Whata family farms on land of volcanic flats rising to low hills at Tautoro, 10 kilometres south of Kaikohe. Their big plans for the farm reflect the surrounding community as they hold the potential for developing whanau and neighbour resources and enterprise.

t is a project close to the heart of Tupari Te Whata. His father farmed here and in the 1970s, Tupari came home from travels to live and work on the family land. The farm straddles Mangakahia Road, part of a family run enterprise from the 1960s

MPI has undertaken an onfarm study of native species regeneration and Tupari has planted ponga and flax, the latter sourced by the community. A native tree nursery is also in the frame. The farm’s distinctive stone walls have required repair and adjustments to control bigger stock numbers and Tupari has used larger rocks to make landscape features, highlighting their ever flowing spring ‘Wai Aatarere’.

or ten years the couple have been delivering essential items to remote places on their 156km route which takes 7.5 hours to drive. “It covers from the outskirts of Kaikohe almost to Moerewa in the south, up to Hupara and its fantastic views, back to Pakaraka and Oromahoe, then I weave my way through the beautiful countryside before emerging at Ohaewai and finish on the outskirts of Kaikohe,” says Doug. He says that even though he travels the route five days a week, no two days are the same and he thoroughly enjoys being a driver. “We love the people and providing a necessary service to them. A Real Kiwi Story

It was the 1950’s and Kiwi’s Bert and Dawn Hansen were building their house. Bert couldn’t find a reliable toilet valve, being an entrepreneur he invented one. This then lead Bert into developing a range of high performance Brass Foot and Check Valves. The design was patented and fast became the bench mark for industry standards and today the original design Bert created is used in a multitude of valves in hundreds of markets all around the world. With the initial success of the Brass Foot and Check Valves, Bert and Dawn worked many long hours to keep up with supply. Their garage was the hub of their business with all the machining, assembling and packaging carried out there. In those early days Dawn remembers having to pack up the car and take all the fittings down to the railway station for distribution. In the 1960’s the range was expanded further with Bert designing and manufacturing a range of Brass Quick Couplings. However by the early 70’s Bert and Dawn realised that plastic was the way of the future and redeveloped the existing range of Brass Quick Couplings and Brass Foot and Check Valves in plastic. By the end of the 70’s Bert and Dawn saw an opportunity to add to their range and designed An Original Hansen and manufactured a Advertisment range of Nylon easy 1979 to use “Cold Fit Pipe Fittings”. Back then this completely changed the way Bert’s Kiwi Farmers joined Alkathene Original pipe, “We had a few teething Toilet Valve 1952 problems with the original cold fit range, mainly around the single barb being difficult to get past the hard pipe when it was cold and a 130kg farmer trying to tighten up a 25mm fitting with a 24” stillson on a -5 degree Southland winters day. Those were some fun learning times but we got those problems sorted, we should have labelled the fittings “Kiwi Proof”.

In the mid 1980’s some more enthusiasm and ideas were injected into the business when Carl Hansen (Bert and Dawn’s Son) arrived from completing his engineering trades. Within a short period of time, Carl’s experience

in engineering and his desire to use the “right” technologies in manufacturing and materials added even more strength to the Hansen company. Bert and the team didn’t sit still for long and in the late 1980’s it was decided Hansen would design and manufacture a range of True Fit Threaded Fittings. With the Hansen range of products growing rapidly, it was time to move out of the garage and into its own manufacturing plant to start injection moulding their products. This move was a huge investment and there were many sleepless nights in the Hansen households. The move proved to be the right decision and it wasn’t long before Hansen products were being demanded from all over the world. The 1990’s saw the products develop a stronger following in New Zealand and Australia, with many of the original products having upgrades to high performance materials and the core ranges growing every year. “At one point it felt like we were adding fitting configurations every month” recalls Carl Hansen. In 1999 it was time for Hansen Products to move into even bigger premises. A building in Union East Street, Whangarei was found and the building underwent huge changes to house the manufacturing plant. The turn of the millennium saw Hansen Products continue on the path of constant improvement; a sister company in Canada was established, Irripod was purchased, the Easy Fit range was updated and after much encouragement from the market our Full Flow Ball Valve was released. 2013 and Hansen Products is far from slowing down. Our in-house Research and Design team has developed several new products for release, Level Alert Heavy Duty Tank Level Indicator, the Leveller Tank/Reservoir Valve, Superflo Piston Valve and the Maxflo Diaphragm Valve. All of these products have been designed for high performance whilst still staying true to Bert’s original philosophy of “Keep it Simple”. However, her grandparents owned a 15th century country house and here the family spent summer weekends and holidays. “We kept no animals, but there was a lake and a forest,” says Vanessa. “In Lyon we lived on the third floor of an apartment building, and when I was little I thought everybody had a country house. I loved it as a child, but not so much as a teenager. Looking back, I was very lucky.” In her teens, Vanessa saw a documentary about New Zealand and was drawn to the Maori culture and the natural environment. “I thought, ‘that will be my country one day’,” she says.

In 2005, on her OE and waitressing in a French restaurant in Auckland, Vanessa met Sam, a sous chef on the first rungs of a culinary career. Sam says at that stage he thought he’d left farming behind. “My grandfather always encouraged us to look outside of farming. He said ‘do what you love, because you’ll never be a good farmer if you don’t enjoy it’.” And Sam’s love was cooking — ‘la cuisine française’ in particular. When Vanessa’s visa expired the couple travelled to France. For the next two years Sam worked as chef de partie in a brasserie owned by celebrated Lyon three-star chef/ restauranteur Paul Bocuse, and during this time son, Matai, now six, was born. After a spell in Vancouver, and expecting second son, Elliot, the Hartles decided to settle in Auckland. But as they holidayed in France prior to returning, Sam’s father, David, called and offered them the management of the Hartle’s second dairy unit. “It took Sam two days before he could speak to me about it, he was so sure I’d say

The couple have recently welcomed third son, Rohan, and purchased a neighbour’s herd. This season Vanessa will milk mornings on the home unit with an evening milker, while Sam milks next door. They say it makes sense to use the opportunity to build assets while they have no financial commitment to the land. “I never thought we’d be here this long,” Vanessa says, “but with two sons born on the farm it feels right for now.” Sam still has culinary ambitions, channelled meantime into meals for family and friends. “But if and when we do go off to do something else, we will leave the farm in better shape than when we came.”

Chains of Bureaucracy

Over the past few months I have spent a lot of time visiting farmers in both North Island and South Island and I see discontent, worry and stress building up as councils and their underlings distance themselves from farmers with their petty rules and unbending nonsensical regulations. Agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and forestry are our main exports and these industries are holding New Zealand together. Markets are tough out there, so why is our infernal bureaucracy endeavouring to penalise the country internally. What’s their game? It’s our taxes that are keeping these clones in a job and they are biting the hand that feeds them. Not only that but they’re biting the wrong hand. Farmers are taking all the abuse and blame for the erosion of our soils and pollution of our food and water which the bureaucrats believe is technically correct. However, from my perspective this is grossly incorrect. In all articles written over the past 10 years the main pollutants targeted in farming terms are superphosphate and artificial nitrogen (urea). In recent times chemical sprays are also being targeted. Now, you cannot blame the farmer for using agrochemical products, the blame sits squarely on the

shoulders of the chemical industry. In New Zealand the NPK Balance Sheet Theory has been reiterated as soil science for the past 60 years, solidly influenced by the phosphate company. It has nothing to do with soil science. The perpetrator of the Balance Sheet Theory was Justus Von Liebig who appraised the minerals left after incinerating plants, only finding N, P and K, he stated that this was all you need to grow. Before his death he declared that that his theory was incorrect as he had not considered all other essential minerals or the micro-organisms in the soil, which incidentally are being annihilated by chemical production. In the USDA Agriculture year book, 1957 pages 3 and 7 the US Department of Agriculture declared the balance sheet theory to be false. The balance sheet theory has been operating for over 170 years, unchanged, causing soil erosion, soil pollution and pollution of food and water. One would think that all

councils and environmental agencies would be fully aware of where the pollution is coming from. Why are farmers being targeted? Wouldn’t it make sense for the councils to target the cause of the problem — the manufacture and marketing of super phosphate and urea? For the past 450 million years, apparently that’s when the first plants appeared on our planet, plants in conjunction with microorganisms have been fixing their nitrogen needs directly out of the atmosphere. Approximately, seventy six percent of our atmosphere is nitrogen. According to Dr Barry Commoner from Washington University, “evidence suggests that in the presence of artificial nitrogen, the natural fixation of nitrogen from the air by soil bacteria stops and as a result it is increasingly difficult for farmers to give up the use of the artificial product. Like addictive drugs, artificial nitrogen creates its own demand.” (Secret Life of Plants, Tompkin & Bird, 1973, pg 221). More and more farmers today are moving away from artificial nitrogen by increasing their soil biology and fixing all their nitrogen requirements for free. The phosphate requirement for plants is 0.2 percent this requirement can easily be satisfied through the use of natural products such as rockdust and guano. According to Dr Morgan Williams report in 2004 our farmland on average contains 1.7 tonne of phosphate per hectare available via microorganisms. A Ruakura report, Bulletin #409 published by the Crown stated “we have calculated that 1% is a very generous allowance for the remaining 9 to 10% of phosphorus in super phosphate available to plants as nutrients left after considering the losses from immobilisation, surface runoff and leaching.” No wonder there is plenty of phosphate in our soils and waters. Winter has suddenly arrived by Bob Cathcart, Land Management Specialist, Northland Regional Council

We have suddenly gone from sunny, warm weather with a few light showers to very cold, hail-enhanced and quite heavy showers. A few more weeks would have enabled farmers to better recover from the drought, but that’s farming — you have to cope with what nature sends you. Ground temperatures should remain high enough to support strong grass growth for a few more weeks so the challenge is to build up as much feed as possible while you can. While the drought will have broken down organic matter and built up nitrogen reserves in the soil, the rapid growth of pasture after the first reasonable rains will have quickly soaked up that available nitrogen. A clear message from advisors has been to apply urea to support grass growth triggered by the rains. As the winter goes on, sulphate of ammonia should be used instead, both to provide nitrogen and to boost sulphur levels as they naturally fall over winter. Remember that nitrogen fertilisers are highly soluble so little and often is better if you can manage it. While nature, with a little support, can rebuild pasture reserves, poor grazing management can jeopardise that whole process. The soil is now wet enough to pug so cattle cannot be left to mill around in paddocks.

When the soil is dry enough to put them in the paddock, they should be left there only long enough to eat their fill and then taken off. Leaving them in the paddock will damage the plants, compact the soil and puddle and seal the surface. Without air, organic matter beneath the sealed surface will rot, become anaerobic and ‘sour’, and grass will stop growing. Soil damage at this time will not only reduce spring growth, the effects will carry on into the spring and summer. That purple haze of pennyroyal in summer is neither pretty nor productive. Now’s the time to make use of your stand-off system, whether it’s just a well formed section of farm race or some more elaborate roofed system. Short spells of grazing, when the soil is firm enough, will avoid pugging and set you up for the production season ahead. This won’t be easy for some farmers who will have used up hay, silage and even maize reserves during the drought.

Wood chips with a rich history

Once the absolute mainstay of rural New Zealand agricultural shows, the sport of wood-chopping is seeking to once again raise its profile. At the Mystery Creek Fieldays, and other rural events around the country — like next year’s Northland Field Days — the top names in competition will be demonstrating their skills. Meanwhile, axemen’s associations are seeking new members to carry on a tradition that has declined in the modern world. For a sport said to have its origins almost a century-and-a-half ago, it was perhaps fitting that last season’s events also included a less than usual arena. The axemen found themselves in the grounds of The Kauri Museum, at Matakohe in the Kaipara. The museum was pleased to provide a showcase against a background of kauri history, with the aim of attracting new interest in the highly disciplined competition. Legend has it that woodchopping became a competitive sport after a bet in 1870 between two axemen in a Tasmanian bar, to settle their argument about who could cut down a tree in the shortest time. Since then, things have got a lot more complicated, with rules, regulations and various styles of competition, usually a more familiar sight at A and P shows around the country. While the popular conception of a woodsman, a lumberjack in the USA and Canada is all about brawn, sophisticated cutting edges, fitness and skill play a great part in competitive success in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, USA, Wales, Ireland, England, and Spain. Oddly, Spanish axemen cut endurance events more so than the speed events we are familiar with, perhaps as the legacy of those two Tasmanians. In Northland, the sport has its roots in the kauri forests that once blanketed the land, so it was fitting that The Kauri Museum hosted the sportsmen, as part of its celebration of the early settlers in the Kaipara, held on a special open day each year. “The weather was damp but the choppers pressed on and the programme was completed,” says host for the axemen, Kauri Museum CEO, Bet Nelley. “Every year we hold a live day that is free to the community. This is to celebrate the early settlers and volunteers show activities that

were carried out in earlier times. The sport of wood chopping fits in perfectly with this theme, coming out of the bushmen days, and the museum is well known for telling the stories of the Kauri timber industry. Those pioneering axemen held contests amongst themselves to see who were the best when it came to felling trees and processing logs and those contests form the basis of the sport we know today.

“The standing chop in bushmen’s terms represents cutting down a tree. “The Underhand, representing trimming a tree after it had been felled. “Neville Alexander who holds New Zealand titles in this event, put on a demonstration of Jigger Chopping, an event for which his father, Bruce Alexander, is well known in Northland and also for holding New Zealand titles. “The opportunity was also taken to carry out coaching in this event. To relate this competition back to the kauri bush days, bushmen would use this method to get above the roots of the tree, and photographs in the museum clearly show the skill of the felling of huge trees, standing on a stage built around the tree. Stages were also used on steep slopes. The axe really was a very necessary heritage tool — for economic survival as well as household and bush camp chores.” Ms Nelley added that while the sport was extremely popular throughout Northland, these days clubs are limited to Opononi, Kauri Coast, Puhoi and North Harbour. Anyone interested in woodchopping as a sport can contact the Northland Axemen’s Association which has experienced and accomplished ‘old hands’ who are willing to share their knowledge and experience with newcomers, ensuring correct techniques to handle an axe safely before stepping into the chopping arena.

A new range of tractors from Kubota is re–writing the specifications list and that latest model has been described as the most exciting thing to happen since the company first released the M series into New Zealand back in the late 70s. Ranging in horsepower from 100 through to 135, Kubota has gone to extra lengths in the human consideration, and the MGX series boasts the largest cab in this horsepower range.

“The B pillar has been removed to allow for better access to the spacious cabin that boasts 4.2m3 of room,” says John Moolenschot from Dargaville Redline Farm Machinery.

“The nearest opposition cab is only 3.93m3. The cab has been completely redesigned to focus on not only increasing the operator space and field of view but making the controls more ergonomically positioned for great operator comfort. The cab has also been raised to provide a higher viewpoint A room with a view.” The new roof panel allows for better loader visibility and allows more light into the cab and is adjustable for optimum ventilation. “Kubota have also provided an updated and much more comfortable instructor’s seat which doesn’t impact on cab space when both folded or in use. As well, the new updated dash and side digital LCD panel provide you with everything you need to know in a central convenient place, with all information clearly displayed.” For the technically minded, the new series is interim Tier 4 compliant, with a common rail system tuned for optimum combustion and combined with exhaust gas recirculation and a diesel particulate filter. This gives better fuel consumption,

less engine noise and reduced emissions without compromising the power and efficiency. It’s definitely no toy by Andy Bryenton

Isuzu’s D Max ute is causing quite a stir in motoring circles. In a world of utes trending toward the extremes of the spectrum (either engineered to ride like a car, or built as a spartan workhorse) the D Max on first impressions appears to have a foot in each camp — it’s a good looking beast with a flash of chrome, rakishly angled headlamps and an aggressive stance emphasised by flared wheel arches and chunky alloys. It’s also quite a serious contender as far as comfort goes — the four-door version I took for a drive (courtesy of Moore Cars in Whangarei) more than accommodated a man-sized frame in the back without the need for extra knees,

and the driver’s seat was more comfortable than that of some family sedans. The real advantage here, however, lies deep inside the three-litre common rail turbo diesel engine of the new D Max. It’s not one

you can see when appreciating the aesthetic impact of the vehicle, but it’s more important than all the chrome in the world — it’s the fact that this ute was built by a truck maker. Isuzu know trucks. Big trucks. So while other ute makers have scaled up their cars and added a back deck (including sometimes using the same or similar engine design for utes and cars), Isuzu have scaled down a truck. If ‘scaled down’ is the right term. Take the turbo for example. To eliminate lag, the D Max uses a variable geometry system as pioneered by Porsche. This gives the ute a smooth acceleration curve which slides through the gears effortlessly and without so much as a grunt of diesel exertion. The doors shut like bank vaults, the tailgate feels like it could support a bull elephant, and

as for the parts which make up the gutsy engine… When you go to take a look at the Isuzu (and anyone looking at a new ute would be advised to book a place), ask to see the comparisons in design and weight with the parts used in comparable vehicles. From the cast roller rockers to the piston big ends, everything about the D Max is bigger, stronger, tougher, and visibly so. From a company which builds serious metal for the world’s trucking fleet, you’d expect no less. So, does the D Max really have a foot in both camps? Is it neither a car with a big flat deck or a truck with less of a step up? Not at all. It’s a fusion of the best of both worlds, built very much as the dealer press emphasises as ‘a tool, not a toy’. And it’ll last far longer than most of the tools in the shop as well.

You may have been trimming your cows for years. You may also have watched veterinarians or a professional hoof trimmer doing some trimming for you. Neither of those options is necessarily going to make you a good hoof trimmer. Watching may give you a somewhat better understanding if the Vet or hoof trimmer is doing a good job and can explain the procedure well. However, I often come across cows that have been trimmed by the farmer but have not been trimmed correctly. I was asked the other day if I could give some tips in my articles.

So here is one: Often when cows are trimmed there is still a lot of loose horn left that really needs to come off. If you can put your finger nail between loose horn and live tissue then the loose horn needs to come off, because if there is a gap between the horn and live tissue then that means that dirt and bacteria can get in there and that is an ideal recipe for an infection. It will also take longer to heal. The philosophy of good hoof trimming is to let the air get to the wound and take the weight off it. This doesn’t mean taking the weight off the wound only and spreading it over the rest of the same claw. It means that the weight needs to come off of the wounded claw and go, as much as possible, onto the healthy claw.

This is a very important concept and there is a very good reason for it. This is something we teach on our hoof trimming courses and it seems a very simple concept when you say it, but it proves to be a very difficult thing to put into practise. It does happen occasionally that the complete sole may need to come off and that is a scary concept for many of us. Some farmers believe that it is good to make the wound bleed, in that way you get to the root of the problem and then you can let the cow go — this is not correct. For one, making the wound bleed makes it really difficult to see what you are doing and therefore, pretty much impossible to take all the loose horn off. Second, when you damage the corium (live tissue) it will take longer for that live tissue to heal before it can grow new horn. These cows have a

tendency to become lame sooner rather than later because the quality of the corium is not as good as what it was before it got damaged and subsequently the quality of the horn is diminished. It is not easy to trim a cow correctly. Most people underestimate the skill involved — the cows are suffering needlessly for it and a farmer’s time is not being well utilised because of it.

In agriculture, helicopters are perhaps most widely used to spray weeds, because of their ability to cover large areas quickly, and to get into tight spaces at low altitude, which comes to the fore in ensuring full coverage and minimising the risk of wind-drift of chemicals onto neighbouring properties. carrying a lot more fertiliser. Furthermore, if nitrogen is required as part of the mix, the fluidised fertiliser bucket can apply this as urea to which the urease inhibitor NBPT has been added. This literally doubles the efficiency of the N, compared to granular urea. In fertiliser application, the use of helicopters has largely been confined to two aspects. The first of these is applying nitrogen, where a quick boost to growth is required in situations where the ground is too wet or steep for trucks, or the nearest airstrip is either too wet or too expensive to be used by fixedwing aircraft. The other common use of helicopters has been in the application of low rates of other nutrients, usually in liquid form to allow boom spreading, and mixed with one or more additives designed to release nutrients from the soil. The argument goes that because of the additive, you don’t need as much fertiliser. The main limitations of a helicopter and boom operation are the very restricted weight that can be carried, and the narrow spreading swath. These combine to mean very frequent landings to reload, which pushes up the cost per hectare.

The Rotagen combo range is based on Globigen, a spray-dried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s specific to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10, coronavirus, salmonella, cryptosporidium, and E.coli (K99). “Globigen is made by vaccinating high health status flocks against a specific pathogen. The hen then passes maternal immunoglobulins from serum to the egg yolk which is collected, then spray-dried, heat-treated and standardised to a determined IgY titre. This is then formulated into a Rotagen combination product by Vetpak here in NZ. Any Rotagen combination of the above IgY’s can be produced on request to

meet a specific challenge.” The IgY antibodies provide a passive immunity effect in the gut in the same way bovine colostrum would. “Studies have shown that IgY’s successfully passes through the gastro intestinal tract in an active form and are not altered by the digestive process. Their ability to bind to antigens is maintained within the local gut.” As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period. The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for five days. For treatment, farmers should dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the first day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days. The nation’s primary producers will be pretty well au fait with the National Identification and Tracing scheme — NAIT — to electronically control stock movements across the country, but lifestyle block holders may not be fully in the loop. As more and more families settle on a few acres, with just a few animals, perhaps for the freezer, the Ministry of Primary Industries has some specific advice.

NAIT is mandatory for cattle and deer, and lifestylers, like regular farmers, need to register as a PICA — person in charge of animals and get a NAIT number for their property. This is straight–forward and takes less than 10 minutes. The Karikari Kontiki Klassic is a fishing contest with a difference — and that’s not just because it emphasises the use of those smart, torpedo-shaped machines which anglers all over New Zealand have taken to with gusto over recent years. No, this one is different because it’s all about teams, themes and good fun, with an environmental message to match the action on the water. Fishing fun in fresh water

The Kai Iwi lakes are considered to be one of the scenic gems of the Kaipara — with their crystal clear water and beautiful surroundings, these picturesque lakes are a favourite holiday destination over the summer for locals and visitors alike. But there’s another great reason to visit the lakes, especially this time of year — the great fresh water sports fishing! The angling action is set to heat up this season with the 2013 Kai Iwi Lakes fishing contest happening on July 6 and 7, bringing keen fisher-folk from around the district together for some friendly rivalry, fun, and of course the promise of a great fish dinner. The lakes are well stocked with rainbow trout, introduced specifically for the sports angler and maintained by the careful management of our regional Fish and Game representatives. The contest serves a serious purpose, as well as offering two days of fun. The trout caught on the day form a good cross section of the Kai Iwi Lakes population, and so their weights can be used to gauge the health of the

fish stock, and through them provide an indicator of the robustness of the overall ecosystem. While trout were brought to New Zealand by one of the many ‘acclimatisation societies’ long ago, they thrive in our waterways and lakes, and their health and good size (over 2kg fish are not uncommon at the Kai Iwi lakes) indicate a pollution-free environment. Tickets are available now from the Northland Fish and Game Council’s offices, from leading local sporting goods and fishing stores, and don’t forget, all entrants must also hold a current relevant fishing licence to compete. Gypsy week has come and pretty much gone, and around the country there will be new faces in rural communities. The transition from one location to another would once have been a more stressful exercise, an up-rooting from established homes and contacts and services and support. Today, with huge advances in communications and technologies, much of the stress of moving locations has disappeared.

But it’s interesting to look back at the way we were in rural areas. In the early days news was essentially by word of mouth — from a visiting neighbour, or at social gatherings. Stuff like, what stock and produce prices were doing. Then along came newspapers, telephones, and railways,

and New Zealand began to get connected. City newspapers, often dropped off by the rural delivery post, became an important source of information for rural people.

And keeping in touch with former friends and colleagues is no longer an issue. Skype provides free, real-time, face-to-face contact across the country.

All that of course is disappearing into the past, as rural sophistication grows with modern communications, and the city press has given way to rural newspapers that are specific to, well, rural lifestyles!

mining and fishing industries located in rural areas, play a vital role in New Zealand’s economy, contributing over 70% of New Zealand’s total export earnings. To remain internationally competitive these need reliable, safe and efficient access to local and international markets. Rural roads are vital, and according to current information these roads are generally in very positive condition after a decade of significant investment. The New Zealand Transport Agency has been working closely with local authorities and contractors to keep this going. More efficient freight movements are a primary objective of the NLTP and the ultimate aim is 4,500 kilometres of state highways and local roads which will provide significant benefits to the primary sector as it means much of the bulk freight carried in rural areas, such as dairy, logs and minerals, can be moved more efficiently, using fewer trips. Although the much-vaunted seven roads of national significance are based around New Zealand’s largest population centres, they have a crucial role to play in getting primary goods safely and quickly to national and international markets. Crashes on rural roads are a serious issue in New Zealand. The introduction of the Safe System approach through the government’s road safety strategy, Safer Journeys, represents a fundamental shift in the way we think about, and act on, road safety. NZTA has

developed the High Risk Rural Roads Guide for local and regional councils. It provides guidance for planning, funding and evaluating safety projects and programmes, and links to a number of road safety resources. The NZTA is trialling rural intersection activated warning signs as part of its effort to reduce serious crashes and improve safety at high risk intersections in rural areas. The agency says two pilot sites have been chosen to begin the trial, which will be expanded to about 10 intersections in the coming year. Based on a concept successfully developed in Sweden, the signs are active notices that aim to slow vehicles on the main road approach when a vehicle is present on a side road. Network resilience is a particular issue for rural communities as often these communities are isolated and heavily dependent on a few key routes, making them much more vulnerable to being cut off by severe weather, slips or seismic activity. Producers also need a rural network that is reliable and resilient in changing times. Changes in farming activity are putting increased loads on rural roads as are changing land uses, for example, in Canterbury where heavy dairying and forestry freight vehicles are putting pressure on rural roads. Local authorities play a crucial role in maintaining rural roads and access, and with changing demographics they are needing to continually reassess demand and levels of service.

‘Cottage’ industry goes international It’s been a busy time for Northland woman, Jules Smith, who moved to Whangarei a few years ago for a change of pace from her busy corporate role in Auckland. Instead of the ‘quiet life’ she planned, her new venture, WashBar, has grown, picking up business awards along the way. Jules was a finalist in this year’s Rural Women’s Business Awards, celebrating entrepreneurial rural women, and says she was honoured to be part of such a diverse and dynamic group. Jules’ business began with handcrafting a few bars of soap in a garden studio, and selling small numbers to pay for supplies. A girlfriend asked her to develop a soap for her dog, who suffered dreadful flea allergies. Jules did a little research and developed a soap for her which had impressive results. “Then I did some research on the dog market, and I discovered that allergies and problem skin are common issues,” she says. “ I realised I couldn’t make enough in my garden studio, so I found a manufacturer to produce my recipe in bulk and WashBar was born.”

Since then WashBar’s products have expanded to a range of coat care solutions for dogs and horses, and next month sees the release of a range of 100% Natural Dog Shampoos. “Now you’ll be able to wash your pet with shampoo that is more natural than you can buy for yourself” laughs Jules. The increase in Fonterra’s farmgate milk price is of course welcome news for Northland farmers, particularly when it is expected to pad wallets for Northland dairy farmers to the tune of around $117 million — plus, or $120,000 each. But I must point out that it is not a magic wand to the ravages of the drought. There was some recovery in pastures, and pockets of Northland are looking great, but the cold snaps of winter have slowed down growth and in stark reality, we are looking at the next two years as the recovery period.

Add the fact that on average there was a loss to dairy farmers of 13 per cent of milk production because of the drought and you have a financial double whammy. Many herds dried off in January and February this year.

So while the Fonterra payout will provide some relief, it is just the company finally realising that it must reward farmers with something more than the costs of dairying. We need cost-plus in this industry. Ten per cent of New Zealand’s dairy farmers owe in the region of 10 million dollars, and let’s face it, the banks can put pressure on and there have been a number of farmers forced into sales of their property. I fear those sales will continue. Last year, Fonterra kept a stranglehold on farmers by paying an advance of $3.85 up to December. Then from the 18th of December to March, no appreciable rain fell.

And then there is the huge cost of re-grassing devastated pastures, a cost of thousands of dollars. So there are farms with overdrafts on average of from a $100,000 to $150,000 and there is not much chance of a decent cheque until around September or October. So in the meantime they need the extra dairy payout simply to deal with drought debts and big overdrafts. Re-capping, Fonterra announced an opening forecast farmgate milk price of $7 a kilogramme of milk solids for the 2013/14 season, which is up $1.20 on the current season, with a higher advance rate schedule of $5 a kilogramme of milk solids, which recognises the forecast farmgate milk price.

So as I have said, Northland farmers are lining up to earn a total of $686 million, or $117.6 million more, but that doesn’t mean they are rushing out to buy stuff. In fact many have sold off some of their Fonterra shares — say 10 or 15 per cent, so it does not affect their supplier status, and that’s another sign of hardship in the present season. The extra Fonterra money most certainly won’t mean Northland’s new car dealers will be rubbing their hands together over the next few months, I can assure you. Farmers need future payouts to match the record $8 to $8.10kg/MS they received before retentions in 2010/11. The sooner they get back to $8 the better, and support the New Zealand industry instead of spending billions of hard earned dollars on overseas development, while restricting returns to our own farmers. Perhaps there will be one benefit from the payout and that is that some farmers will be able to find the money to undertake some deferred maintenance, which could help the rural contracting industry. But there will not be much champagne and caviar on the farmhouse table, or new cars in the shed. Of that we can be sure.
