The Northland Regional Council’s work for the next decade and how it will be paid for should be known by the middle of June, with council expected to adopt its Long Term Plan in the middle of this month. A big question for the 1,278 submitters to the plan was the future of funding for emergency services, with cuts proposed to funding for the emergency helicopter service. Council chair, Bill Shepherd said among key issues in the plan were funding for emergency services, rating levels overall with a five percent increase proposed for the 2015/16 year, a mid-North bus trial and pest management at Whangarei Heads, all of which had attracted large numbers of submissions. “We’re aware that ours is just one of a number of local authority plans our communities were asked to comment on and are very grateful to those who took the time to do so.” As well as hundreds of written submissions, councillors also heard from 54 submitters at feedback meetings in Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Kaikohe and Whangarei. “We’ve had some big decisions to make which will affect ratepayers at a collective regional, local community and personal level and the public feedback has been invaluable as we’ve debated these issues around the council table.” Funding for emergency services had attracted the largest number of

comments on any one issue, with responses from 772 submitters. “Essentially there was a roughly even split between submitters keen to retain the existing funding regime for the region’s helicopter service and those who wanted to see development of a larger, fully contestable fund open to other emergency services instead.” He said councillors had tried to strike the right balance between affordability, value for money and ongoing improvement. Councillors are expected to formally adopt a final LTP at their next full monthly meeting, on June 16 in Whangarei.

Overlooked by many within the fine details of last month’s budget from the government was a $10 million package over four years designed to beef up New Zealand’s animal welfare systems – supporting a new law that too, has just taken effect. Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy said the investment will support changes in the new Animal Welfare Amendment Act, which passed into law last month and some of the money will go to informing the industry of those changes. “Some of this funding will go towards creating targeted education that ensures the right people know what is required of them. As well as strengthening the enforcement of animal welfare requirements, the investment will also contribute to the SPCA’s work in animal welfare. In particular, it will further support its compliance function.” “New Zealand already has a strong reputation for animal welfare,” Mr Guy says. “However, the expectations of consumers and society are constantly changing and our farming systems are continually evolving. This investment will support changes in the new Animal Welfare Amendment Act, which passed into law this month. These changes have made animal welfare obligations clearer, more transparent and easier to enforce. They will also ensure New

CONSCIENCE by Ayla Miller Thinking inside the box is not something Waikopani Holdings Ltd owners Rachel and Greig Alexander do. The innovative couple impressed judges during the Ballance Farm Environment Awards with their land use decisions on the 126ha milking platform.
T
he Alexander’s dairy farm has been in the family since the mid 1990s and they have unhesitatingly improved the property creating a stable business in the Mangakahia River Valley just out of Whangarei. Both from farming backgrounds, Rachel grew up on a sheep and beef farm in Purua and Greig has experience as a sharemilker. The couple have carefully matched land uses to the capability of the various land types for sustainable production. They have designated the steeper areas to be planted with forestry species and they have also established riparian and wetland areas in the valleys. “It is the diverse nature of our land that makes it different from other farms.
As the country is steep to rolling, we pay particular attention to match forestry and stock to the soil type,” says Rachel. They have received numerous awards for their work including the Ballance AgriNutrients Soil Management Award, LIC Dairy Farm Award, Massey University Innovation Award, and the WaterForce Integrated Management Award. Their operation milks 350 cows, making good use of home-grown feed with imported supplements to make up the total. Waikopani Holdings Ltd practise on-off grazing to lessen damage from pugging and pasture damage and decreasing the amount of sediment lost in heavy rain. They have established wetland traps to capture these run-offs which have become a feature of the property.

“We have planted natives and made the wetlands look as natural as possible. It is a matter of working hard to make sure we are doing the right thing so the future generations can continue on.” This creates a safe habitat for wildlife and aquatic species and also stores a certain amount of water in the wetland and collects any nutrients from the farming operation. The couple have two young boys aged 11 and 13 who help their parents out on the farm. “One loves machinery and the other one loves animals,” says Rachel. Greig says: “They get to be outside and learn life lessons. It is hands on and they can make mistakes and learn from them. It is important that they understand consequences. “We want to make sure that our farm will offer business opportunities for the future.” All waterways on their properties are protected by fences, bush and wetland areas which show their long term environmental awareness. Reservoir water levels are monitored electronically and the health and safety of the farm was judged as ‘well constructed and maintained’ by competition judges. “We enjoy the challenge of farming and we enjoy working together. It is good to see the results and positive benefits from farming the way we do and seeing a job well done,” says Rachel. The couple have found winning the Ballance Farm Environment Award encouraging saying: “As farmers it is a sign that we are farming the right way.

put sustainable practices into action. The aim of the day was to demonstrate how they are able to maintain profitability across their farm including their beef and forestry operations. Visitors had the chance to explore the 486-hectare farm giving them an overview of the business. It also provided information on the innovative use of clover silage as a supplement, pest control and bush management, saving water, and how to combine beef and forestry operations. For any farmers starting out an operation similar to Waikopani Holdings Ltd, Greig believes that as long as the techniques enhance the property and is profitable, he doesn’t see any negatives.
It is something we have done for a long time and it is nice to be recognised.” When they aren’t farming, the Alexander’s keep themselves busy with sports, calf club preparation, school hostel management, and they have established a scholarship fund for their local primary school. As for the future of the farm Greig says it is always evolving. “There will always be changes that happen over time. I especially enjoy the variety of ventures and the challenges that come with that. It is not just one single operation and the winning of the award is an acknowledgement that we are heading in the right direction.” The couple hosted a field day to show visitors and interested parties how they

DEIDRE HIRA GREW UP AMONGST WOMEN WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THE SHEARING INDUSTRY FOR MANY GENERATIONS AND HER AUNT JUNE KARA IS STILL A ROUSIE TODAY AGED 73.
“I
t’s natural to me to work in the sheds. My mum was a wool handler and cook, my dad, a shearer, and my grandma also a wool handler. I started learning the trade of wool handling when I was 14-years-old, and I went on my first course in 1988 to get certified,� said Deidre who is known as Aunty or Nanny Dre in the industry. “I work for a contractor, moving around the country from property to property. I enjoy the challenge dealing with the animals and time frames. “Wool handlers prepare the wool to go to the scourers to be processed, taking the fleece from the shearers as they finish each animal to sort. Every run is monitored through a wool classer. Our job is to get the best price possible for our clients.� The gang consists of eight or nine girls and six or seven shearers who have

a routine they work to which keeps the system going. The contractor generally puts teams together with personality and skill levels spreading out evenly with experience, confidence and character. “When we first arrive on a site we usually shear the main flock, starting with the ewes, then we move on to others such as hoggets and two tooths, the wethers and the rams. “Often shearing is broken up and the gang will move to another client after the main flock is taken care of, allowing the farmer time to bring in the next mob. This can be a week apart, especially on big stations, because of the thousands of sheep in some places. Deidre retrieves the fleece off the board after the sheep is shorn and places it on a table where oddments are removed and it is ready for the classer to check. It is then pressed into

WORKING AS A TEAM IS IMPORTANT TO THE RUNNING OF THE GANG an average of 175–185 kilogram bales. The bales are then branded, pulled out and stacked. They sweep the board for the shearers and keep every fleece separate to avoid any cross contamination. Different prices are paid for oddments according to length and colour. Each section of wool has a different quality. She explains the lower the micron, the finer the wool — the better quality, which gives the best price and makes better clothing and products. The work is seasonal, although some workers are full time and stay on to help with crutching and other necessary jobs. “Some of the families we work for have been on these farms for many generations with properties passed down since the 1800s. They are really hard workers, and are always checking we are ok and that we have our needs met. It is a family atmosphere and we

all look out for and support each other,” she says. “Ultimately the end result is rewarding and the travelling side gives variety. Often the scenery is beautiful and we see places people never get to see. We can be looking out over the snow capped alps or a beautiful lake or up north we see the giant sand dunes and gorgeous forests like a kauri kingdom. The jobs can also take you overseas. “After hours there are still chores to be done and cleaning our personal shearing equipment to keep it all up to scratch. “I would definitely recommend others look at this as a career option. This line of work it is never boring. Training happens on site and there are also shearing and wool handling courses available. “We learn about back and body care and participate in stretching and warm
ups before starting work, which helps reduce injury. “When my children were young, my commitment to the job was limited and I didn’t travel so much. The nature of the job allowed me to work part time which made things easier as in those days there was no day care. It is versatile and according to where you are at and your ability to commit — generally there are allowances if prearranged. “I love the job, all aspects of it, and the industry has been good regarding my family and they also love it. Three of my sons are in the trade now. Hura is in the United States, Michael is in Australia, and Taare is in the South Island. My daughter Hutia is a wool handler and cook. “My whole family love the work and lifestyle and the generations before me did too. I guess future generations will as well.”

Friendly Farming By Ayla Miller Ambie Beatty is a third generation farmer, milking 430 cows on a 300 hectare property on the western side of Tangiteroria bridge with his wife Jan.
“I
’ve lived here most of my life,” the dairy farmer says. “There is a lot of history here. It is quite good to be able to tell my sons your grandfather and great grandfather used to do this too. ” The farm has doubled in size since his grandfather’s time when he purchased the land next door. “Farming has changed a lot over the years, but I
think they’d be pretty impressed by what I’m doing.” His environmental ethics and strategies have been attracting attention for all the right reasons and earlier this year he hosted an EnviroReady Field Day to show off his endeavours, organised by the Northland Regional Council and Dairy NZ. SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening
your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. what changes they can make on their own farms to reduce their environmental impact. DairyNZ catchment engagement leader Helen Moodie says the open days give visitors the chance to see the changes first hand and understand why they are made. “These days are about raising awareness. It’s about understanding what is coming and why and small changes you can make to stay up to speed. You’ll be able to see what works well for others.” Mr Beatty is a prime example of a farmer doing things right. He recently contracted Steve Swann from Clearwater Crossings Limited to build an arch bridge which goes from bank to bank without disturbing the creek bank or the water below it. The bridges are fully engineered patented bridge systems and Clearwater Crossings Limited arrange all local body consents for their clients. The concrete deck on this bridge is carefully set at just the right slope to carry effluent to the catch pit without being too slippery for the cattle. The bridge is also rated to take up to class one loadings and comes with many other benefits such as a speedy construction, reduced cost, and is aesthetically pleasing. “I wanted it to look smart as it is right by the cowshed,” said Mr Beatty. “I’m very happy with the result. I couldn’t fault it and Steve is very good to work with. It will make a huge difference and keep things much tidier.”
The finished project — An aesthetically pleasing, environmentally friendly Clearwater Crossings Limited construction The bridge only took two weeks to construct and is built with hard fill concrete. The Beatty’s were hit hard by flooding in 2014 and are keen to stop the same damage from happening again. The Clearwater bridge system means that water is able to keep its natural path during a storm and minimises damage unlike traditional culvert arrangements which become bursting with water eroding riverbanks and creating unhealthy water environments. Along with representatives from Dairy NZ, Opus, Guyco and Fonterra, 8 farmers attended the day and were interested to see Mr Beatty’s covered feed pad. This pad is made of concrete with drains to collect the cow muck. The effluent is then collected in covered bunkers until it is dried, then spread over the pasture by a contractor. This reduces the need for ‘sacrifice paddocks’ and
the consequent sediment discharge. Farmers have reported good results by using this process as effluent promotes good growth in maize and chicory. “Everything is contained in one building,” says Mr Beatty. “Some farmers have the feed pads but the sheds are somewhere else and there have been problems with the effluent in between the two where the cows walk. “The cows love the covered feed pad. On wet days they don’t want to leave. They will stand around for a bit and when the weather improves they’ll slowly wander off. Environmental monitoring officer Dennis Wright spoke about how far Northland has come regarding compliance. Everyone was quite pleased about what they got out of the day.”

A Ministry of Primary Industries report entitled ‘People Powered’, indicates that to meet the government’s target of doubling our primary sector exports by 2025, there is a need to increase the skill level across primary industries. Approximately 44 per cent of workers in the primary sector currently have a formal post-school qualification and this is expected to reach 62 per cent by 2025. New Zealand’s largest Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre’s mission is to build workforce skills in primary industries, with programmes designed to meet a wide range of needs within the agricultural sector. It is New Zealand’s largest agricultural training organisation, educating over 3,000 students every year. Taratahi delivers ‘Real Training on Real Farms’, focusing on developing real skills using a large network of farm partners, and thousands of hectares of leased or owned land farmed on a commercial basis across New Zealand. Hemoata Kopa from Matawaia decided to enrol after speaking to a Taratahi representative at a careers expo. Since starting she has learned she values the outdoor lifestyle and the ability to work independently on farm. She enjoys the variety of farming —
doing something different every day. Education has given her the confidence to believe she can have a high level career in agriculture and she has achieved the finals of the Auwhenua Young Maori Farmer Awards held in Whanganui. Maori make up 28% of all students at Taratahi. Initiatives with iwi to meet Maori-agribusiness needs include marae-based training programmes and customised programmes designed to support iwi needs. In addition to full-time and parttime programmes, Taratahi also offers secondary school learning through Primary Industries Trades Academy (PITA), STAR and extra mural programmes. Enrolments are now open across all campuses for the midyear intake in Northland. Forestry grants close soon
Northland farmers and landowners have just the remainder of the month to take full advantage of a government forestry grant scheme, with the Northland Regional Council advising it also has options to help. The government has re-launched its Afforestation Grant Scheme , or AGS to spend $22.5 million over the next six years subsidising the planting of forests on erosion-prone land. The scheme previously saw more than 12,000 hectares of new forest planted nationally between 2008 and 2013. The re-launched scheme administered by the Ministry for Primary Industries is accepting applications until June 30. Grants will be allocated at the rate of $1,300 per hectare, with the objective of allowing recipients to start planting in winter next year. “For those who had already started planning planting projects on their land, this is a great incentive to take action over the next month and we encourage Northlanders to do so,” says the NRC Hokianga-Kaikohe representative Joe Carr. Councillor Carr, an Okaihau-based beef farmer and forest owner who chairs the council’s Environmental Management Committee, says the regional council
can assist applications to the AGS in two ways. “The council’s land management advisers can prepare farm water quality improvement plans at no cost to support applications, while its environment fund can provide for fencing to exclude stock from areas that have been newly planted for soil conservation benefits.” The environment fund is open for another year from July 1. Cr Carr adds that farmers and landowners who aren’t able to get their applications into the AGS over the next month could still use it as an opportunity to plan projects for next year. Deputy Mayor Tania McInnes and Annika Dickey of Whitelaw Weber chartered accountants hosted the event. “Nexus is about bringing women together to support and encourage each other. “We all have potential and if we work together, especially in the rural environment, we can achieve a lot,” said Ms McInnes. “It was an incredible night with over 180 women and four men. The enthusiasm was really special.” Dame Jenny talked of planning for the future, and being focused on what is ahead. She said, “tourists are certainly interested in our stories and lifestyles. We have a rich culture and history, and people want to know about our past and experience our culture.”

Waipapa’s pioneering spirit by Ayla Miller
Situated along State Highway 10, and a ten minute drive from the tourist hub of Kerikeri, is the quiet rural town of Waipapa. With many old farming families on the surrounding land, and metal roads until recently, chairman of the Waipapa Business Association Mal Liddington says the town is happy to be known as a pleasant place to live and an attractive stopping place for travellers heading north. The Waipapa Business Association are a group of business owners that share a love of the area and would like to see it reach its potential. Mr Liddington has been a resident since 1981, owns a mandarin orchard and runs Waipapa Autocourt. He has been chairman of the Business Association for the last seven years. “In the last 15 years the infrastructure has moved really fast and we as a group like to have a say in what is happening. We have done quite a bit of work around beautification of the town such as having roads named and new tarseal put down. A few years ago the group received a beautification grant which they put towards creating iron pioneer silhouettes which they placed around the town, parks and gardens. “We are mainly a lobby group. As we are located on the state highway, we are continuously trying to get the speed limit lowered as people speed through.”
In time Mr Liddington believes the association will amalgamate with other business associations in the area. “It is difficult to put in the required time on a volunteer basis but we are keen to keep our place going with a pioneer theme.” Unlike Kerikeri, Waipapa has plenty of room to expand. “I can see Waipapa becoming bigger, subject to council approval. Kerikeri will be the small boutique area and Waipapa will become a commercial hub.” With recent developments such as an RD1, Farmlands, a hairdresser’s opening, a Gull service station in progress, and other projects in the works, Mr Liddington has visions of the town becoming a successful commercial retail centre growing together with Kerikeri, connected by the new bypass. As Waipapa is situated on the state highway, the township is in a valuable position to offer small comforts such as cafes, shops and resting places for those headed for the Bay of Islands. “We were hit hard by the recession but it is good to see the growth that has taken place in the last 18 months. I don’t think Waipapa can be a tourist destination on its own but, combined with Kerikeri and the other popular tourist destinations of the Bay of Islands, Waipapa will continue as a growing little village.”

Mayor visits shed for men by Ann Morgan
With the philosophy to keep men active after they have retired from the workforce, Men’s Sheds also create the opportunity to form friendships which extend out into everyday life. It took just three and a half months for the Kerikeri Men’s Shed to move from a public meeting to the opening of their own shed on the corner of Kapiro Road and State Highway 10 near Waipapa, Kerikeri. “With over 50 blokes turning up to a public meeting in November 2014, we have since formed a steering committee, then a full committee, adopted a constitution, became incorporated and obtained charitable trust status,” said chair of the Shed, Terence Playfair. “On top of that, a benefactor has leased a premises to the group for two years at a peppercorn rental. “The community and members have donated machinery, tools and timber and we have already completed a raft of projects.” In late May, Far North District Council Mayor, John Carter, visited to meet with the men. “That day we had already put in a morning’s work building planter

Breach of banking code costs bank millions Australian customers and small businesses taking on their banks over rip-offs have won a massive boost after a landmark court ruling in the Australian Victoria State Supreme Court that requires financial institutions to stick to their own code of conduct. The precedent setting judgement will cost the National Australia Bank Limited millions of dollars and has sparked a scramble from the banking industry as it means the banking code of conduct goes from being a guide to contractually binding. The National Australia Bank suffered the defeat in court after it tried to argue that the industry’s self regulatory code of conduct has no legal effect. It is ironical that our own New Zealand banks also claim that their code of banking practice is voluntary and is also not legally binding. Australian Supreme Court Judge Justice James Elliott has ruled that the banking code has contractual force and because the National Australia Bank breached it, the bank could not recoup $6 million in loan guarantees for a series of Gold Coast property investments. The judgement means that the National Australia Bank cannot enforce the guarantees made by Mr Rose. This judgement places a spotlight, not only on the Australian banking code of practice but also on the New Zealand Bankers Association code of banking practice, as New Zealand Court decisions commonly follow Australian Court decisions, and those of Canada and the United Kingdom. Farmers of New Zealand support the New Zealand code of banking practice becoming enforceable in New Zealand law. It is not good enough for banks to simply hide behind the code of banking practice, claiming it is a voluntary agreement based on goodwill and intentions. The majority of New Zealand banks are owned by Australian banks, therefore the
New Zealand banking code of practice should become legally enforceable in New Zealand where they operate and enjoy ever increasing profits. Farmers of New Zealand also support the re-introduction into Parliament of the Farm Debt Mediation Bill which, in the past, has not been supported by the vast majority of politicians. While in New Zealand the number of bank foreclosures has declined, economists warn that those who currently have extended themselves in taking out mortgage loans could be exposed in the next New Zealand economic downturn, which may not be too far away if the Auckland real estate market funded by overseas immigrants crashes. New Zealand Institute of Economic Research said even when mortgage sale numbers were high during the global financial crisis, New Zealand did not have the same default rate as the United States, where homeowners could “post back their keys” if property values collapsed.

Kai Iwi Lakes fishing contest
After spending one month in Papua New Guinea watching the women cook three times a day on wood fires too big for their pots, Paul McFarlane came up with an invention to help them in their daily life and called it the Rocket-Two-In-One. These stainless steel rocket cookers are designed so water can be easily boiled for drinking whilst cooking. It is ideal for natural disasters or anywhere that water must be boiled before being consumed. The cooker is also great for camping and hunting as it is fuelled by small bush sticks in the base unit which holds approximately 12 litres of water, and when the fire is going, a pot, frying pan or wok can be placed on the top of the cooker. Paul has a background in engineering and mechanics and was inspired when he saw the original rocket cookers. He and a friend came up with the idea of the water jacket when he was staying with a traditional village on the coast of Madang. “Life is very basic there and there is no running water. They must dig wells by hand and sometimes these are not far away from long drops. “The drinking water can get contaminated and there is a lot of sickness. This cooker
gives people the chance to get away from that sickness. “I have cooked a Papua New Guinea boil up on it using taro, banana and chicken. I cooked this for two hours and used approximately 1.4 kilo of sticks feeding seven people. “It is a great product for any company wanting to donate to any charities as your name and logo can be etched into cookers.” The Rocket-Two-In-One does not require a permit as the fire in contained so it is ideal for hunters, campers, and even scouts. Paul took a demo cooker with him the last time he visited Papua New Guinea and said there was already a lot of interest. “We have kept the cookers cheap so families can afford them,” he says. “We are not doing these to make a lot of money but more to help people in their daily lives thus we have kept the price very low, a retail of NZ$149 each, making these more affordable to those in need.” To find out more visit www. rockettwoinone.com.
A highlight of the Northland freshwater fishing calendar, the Kai Iwi Lakes trout fishing contest will be held on the weekend of July 4 and 5.

The National Torpedo Tournament is shaping up to be bigger than ever this year with a brand new name and venue. The event, previously named Karikari Kontiki Klassic, will be held at Ninety Mile Beach, East Beach and Tokerau Beach from July 9 to 11, with the new venue at Ninety Mile Beach Holiday Park. For first-time organisers, Anita and Mark Dancaster, the competition is a thrill. They are keen fisher people themselves and will donate profits from the competition to Men’s Health Awareness. “There are a lot of men who go fishing, and blokes are the worst when it comes to going to the doctor, so it is all about raising awareness. Every little bit helps,” said Anita. Entry is $250 and there will be over $20,000 in prizes up for grabs. There are four categories in this event and contestants can weigh in up to three of each species a day, per team. The categories are snapper, kahawai, gurnard and ‘other’. Other does not include stingray, eagle ray or sharks. Each category will have prizes for first, second and third place, and the overall winner is the team with the heaviest combined total weight. “We are hoping to get more people entering this year as we have a Facebook presence. There is also more awareness around torpedoes.

An introduction to biological farming by Ann Morgan
Farmers using a biological farming system and spraying biological tea on the land, believe it is more sustainable to the health of the land, and animals, which means healthier products for people.
A
group of farmers met together to discuss biological farming strategies. “Once the bio system gets established, less fertiliser is needed. It boosts productivity, improves water quality, reduces pests and weeds and animal and crop health improves. It is soil biology that takes the minerals you apply to supply the plant,” said Russell Simmons from Tellus Co-operative Ltd. “To discover how well your soil is functioning, dig a hole and count how many earthworms per spade split you find, above 30 is good. Worms are the
top of the food chain and eat all the other soil biology, not the soil organic matter like everyone thinks. “Good functioning soil gets air moving down through the profile, allowing organisms to breathe. Check how far down the roots are growing, if the roots go further in depth seeking minerals, that is a good indicator of how the soil is doing.” Herbage testing measures the amount of nutrients getting into the plant and one benefit of using the bio system is that herbs the farm hasn’t grown for a long time reappear. He says one dry stock farm had six worms per spade split, and after one application of

DAIRY bio tea and changing the fertilisers around grew to 36 worms in one year. This showed the health of the soil returning. Doug Butcher lived on the West Coast of the South Island, and started using biological compost tea and soil conditioners when they moved to a property riddled with porina caterpillar and other grubs. “The bugs disappeared after the first year using compost teas,” said Doug. “Biological farming focuses on re-establishing mineral balance and enhancing beneficial microbiology in the soil in order to promote good soil health, healthy crops and healthy animals. “We started in the South Island with 320 cows, 94,000 milk solids and 15% empty rate in the first year. The second year, with our biological tea, we dropped to 300 cows, produced 109,000 milk solids and an eight per cent empty rate. The third year, a drought year, we were on target for 130,000 at Christmas, but the drought made us dry off a month early so we finished at 110,000 milk solids, nothing else changed, we ran the same programme.” Living in the Kaipara for the past two years, the farm they are on needs improving so they import products to make their bio tea and soil conditioners from the South Island and mix them on-farm.

In the shed with Megan Fowlie Don’t mistake cutting costs with growing profit When times are tight we tend to look for what we can carve off as nice-to-haves versus mission critical. Listening to a well-respected vet speak earlier this month reminded me that sometimes we can get this wrong. Veterinarian Dr Bas Schouten hammered home the importance of neo-natal care and rearing youngsters from birth to mating at the recent dairy goat meeting. He was adamant that the research holds true for all our production animals. Holding back on good-quality feed will lead to a poorer performing herd overall, whereas feeding young stock well, whether kids, lambs or calves, will pay dividends in the building disease resistance, increasing productivity over that animal’s lifetime and increasing longevity. A body of research has built up over the last 40 years showing that animals

weaned at low weight never catch up — even if once mature, they have reached the ideal mature weight. For example, dairy cows weaned too early will have a lower calving rate, lower productivity at first lactation, lower three-week submission rate as first calvers, and less chance to survive compared with their well-grown young peers. To grow out young stock well and realise latent gains farmers need to be managing target weights at the critical times of weaning, mating and calving, kidding or lambing. Regular frequent weighing is the best method of keeping on track. Any variance of animals lagging behind those targets should signal that something is up. Weighing and noting variance provides the opportunity to investigate an animal’s condition early, to intervene and remedy. It is difficult to maintain an argument for skimping during rearing even during tough seasons. With the huge advantages of costefficiencies and long-term benefits to
growing young stock well at an early age means the cost of rearing could be spread over many years.

Soil testing and fertiliser recommendations

With winter here, now is the time to reflect on whether your soil has adequate nutrition and energy to grow quality pasture through until the spring flush comes. Getting your head around soil test results can cause confusion for some people. A Hill Laboratories type soil test, or cation exchange capacity test, looks at what nutrients are in the mineral reserves (think of it as your bank balance). It can also test to see if you have any trace mineral issues, how much sulphur is available and phosphorus. For phosphorus testing, for New Zealand soils it is better to get a Resin P phosphorus test done over an Olsen P. This is because an Olsen P was originally developed in North America for alkaline soil conditions. Most New Zealand soils are acidic (have a pH <7) to very acidic (pH<5.5) and in this situation an Olsen P can actually overestimate the amount of plant available P (see the following link for more information: www.soiltech. co.nz/articles/article13.pdf). A Reams Soil Test is helpful to work out what nutrients are in the plant available form (think of this as your daily limit at the cashflow machine compared to your actual bank balance). It can highlight if you have microbe issues (you may have a high P reading from your Hill Laboratories test, but the Reams Soil Test shows that this is not available to plants). So you should look at feeding your soil biology so that they can access your mineral reserves of P and/or changing

It’s been more than 80 years since Nissan — once known as Datsun — first produced a light commercial truck for tradespeople and industry.

In those intervening years there have been some big changes in the market, but two key factors remain evergreen. Those who are seeking a deck-backed workhorse still want to know that their chosen machine is going to last the distance. And, as it has been for many of those decades, it’s a tough battle at the top in this hotly contested sector of the market. Nissan’s 12th generation Navara builds on the success of their D40 model, though the 2015 ute offers rakish styling and a commitment to the new philosophy in light commercials — the concept of a vehicle which can carry heavy loads all week and still handles like a sedan when finesse is required. Certainly, the Navara’s interior bears this out, with a car-like dual instrument cluster and a seven inch infotainment screen taking pride of place. But the underpinnings of this vehicle guarantee heavy-duty performance, with the Navara boasting 1,000kg payload capacity and triple that number when hooked up to the towbar. This month, a veritable super-fleet of agricultural machines from every major brand on Earth will descend on Mystery Creek, Hamilton, for the nation’s biggest farming expo. work. Reliability has been prioritised, and ease of access for technicians means that servicing is no mammoth task either. Built to keep on going in arduous conditions, this turbocharged mill is mated to a 12x12 synchro shuttle transmission, allowing the 6110 to undertake a wide range of tasks, hook up to a whole shed full of implements, and even pack a handy loader bucket up front for silage handling and feed-out duties. The ability to lift 1,600 kilos is just the beginning. To put all that power to use, Mahindra have used a similar design aesthetic with the 6110 as they have with their rugged Pik-up and Thar vehicles. That means solid, hard-wearing components, a heavyduty chassis, and construction built to weather anything you can throw its way. But, with a fully enclosed and airconditioned cab, this practical tool is not without its comforts. Mahindra have made every effort to ensure that the most important component — the driver — is as immune from fatigue as all those moving parts.

Indoor vs Outdoor Farming

During the 1950’s New Zealand pastoral farmers were the best and most cost effective producers on our planet and the rest of the world was trying to emulate us. New Zealand was the envy of the globe with our cows, sheep and beef being outdoors, grass fed and healthy, everyone wanted our products and our financial position was very strong. The average dairy farm back then was 40 hectares, supporting up to 2 families and beef and sheep farms were all sizes, our country was pumping and from the flow on effects of our agricultural people, these were good times. The country towns were booming and everybody had a job and money was
circulating. Production was a lot easier then with plenty of grass out in front of the animals and neighbours were helping one another to make hay and silage. It was a nice thing to be doing, the food was great and beer came in big bottles. Our scientists back then were setting new standards for agriculture; they were allowed to think for themselves, were genuinely independent and paid by the New Zealand taxpayer. By the mid 1980s toxic chemicals had filtered into the farming communities and
the chemical corporations had partnered up with our agricultural universities. In the mid 1980’s I had set up business in central California growing and marketing Kiwano (horned melons) which together with New Zealand production kept me in the global markets for 12 months of the year. During this period I came across, what is termed as industrial farming where animals are kept in huge sheds and feed and water is supplied to them. I first recognised this system of production by the nostril biting stench of urine and excrement — not nice. You could smell it from miles away as you drove up the I5 freeway in California. The latest figures out this year, for industrial dairy farming in the USA are; the average milking life for a cow is 20 months, they are milked 4 times per day, injected with hormones to produce more milk and because of confinement are regularly injected with antibiotics. The bulk of feed supplied to them is maize, (more than likely GMO maize). Grains are great for chickens and hogs but when fed to rumen animals the maize causes acidosis resulting in mastitis. During milking the pus from mastitis is going into the milk making it unfit for human consumption — so much for industrial farming. While I was in California last month, farmers were talking about going back to family size farms in an endeavour to produce better quality food for a better

Feeling that everything we buy now has a short life span built into it, and the fact we continue to buy updated cars, I bit the bullet. I was talking with someone about this just the other day, and their Mother in her 90s uses an iPad for all her news and information, so don’t believe it’s only the youngsters who are switched onto technology.
