Recent finds of the pest plant velvetleaf and myrtle rust around the country underline why it’s crucial for farmers to take precautions as they move stock and equipment during the year. The mass transportation of cows and machinery around the country’s roads as farm contractors relocate themselves and their stock during the year is a time to be extra vigilant. “Biosecurity starts at the farm gate,” says Darion Embling, pest plants team leader. “It is clear that farmers and contractors have an important role to play in preventing the spread of pest plants through good on farm biosecurity practices.” He said machinery hygiene is especially important and people need to take extra care with the movement of stock, machines and vehicles between farms. “To help stop the spread of dangerous weeds and animal pests, as well as disease, it is important to ensure vehicles, machinery and equipment is cleaned before making shifts. Machinery should be cleaned so no visible soil or plant matter remains which might spread pests or weeds. “Taking precautions like this on the plant pest front helps ensure agriculture stays healthy.” Last year it was confirmed that unclean machinery generally had been linked to the spread of velvetleaf. To help avoid stock effluent ending up on the road during shifts, it is also recommended that farmers stand their stock off green pasture for a minimum of four hours with water before transporting. Other tips include: confirming stock pick-up times in advance to eliminate confusion; move stock close to the loading ramp the day before; when possible use dry feed before transport because it results in less effluent, and if possible quarantine stock for 24 hours before moving and on arrival. Velvetleaf is an annual broad-leaved weed that grows up to three metres tall.
Darion Embling, pest plants team leader
The flowers are buttery-yellow and about three centimetres across and bloom from spring through to autumn. The leaves are large heart or circular shaped and are velvety and soft to the touch with distinctive seed pods or capsules in a cuplike ring and each segment contains 1–3 large heart-shaped black seeds. The Velvetleaf Farm Management Plan is available at: www.mpi.govt.nz/ alerts and provides recommendations for machinery hygiene, animal feed management, stock movement and crop management. Myrtle rust is readily transportable because they produce large numbers of small and light spores. Myrtle rust attacks young, soft, actively growing leaves, shoot tips and young stems. Initial symptoms are powdery, bright yellow or orange-yellow pustules on leaves, tips and stems, and can also be dispersed through the transport of infected plant material. Suspected infected plant material should not be moved and should be reported by phoning MPI on 0800 80 99 66.

Myrtle rust fight heats up With multiple sources of infection emerging as this edition goes to press, the spread of myrtle rust is alarming biosecurity and movement controls are in place as the battle against the fungal disease moves into high gear. The scourge was first found in Kerikeri early in May, and two weeks later, it was discovered in Taranaki. Now Waikato has come under the spotlight after myrtle rust was found in a Te Kuiti nursery. The windborne spores mean New Zealand may have to live with an ongoing threat to the myrtle family of plants which include pohutukawa and manuka. Thought to have arrived on winds from across the Tasman, the disease is likely to affect some of our iconic native plants as well as commercially-grown species. Testing by the Ministry for Primary Industries confirmed rust infection at a plant nursery in Waitara had spread to four other sites in the province. MPI’s Myrtle Rust Response Incident Controller David Yard says that, as with the nursery in Kerikeri, movement controls have been placed on other properties involved. No movements of plants or other risk materials are permitted off the sites and the locations have been treated with fungicide and inspected out to 500m from the infection sites “The earlier we locate a new infection, the greater the chance of doing something about it. We’ll be throwing everything at it to attempt to control it, but we are realistic that it is a huge challenge, given how readily the spores spread by the wind.” Mr Yard says finding myrtle rust in a new region could be the sign that we will need to learn to live with this fungal plant disease. Myrtle rust infects plants in the myrtle family including pohutukawa, rata, and manuka as well as some production species including feijoa and eucalypts. There are two main reasons why the rust has been seen first in nurseries. Growing conditions there are ideal for the fungus with many vulnerable young plants in sheltered, warm and damp environments. In addition, there has been a large amount of communication with the nursery industry and growers

have been particularly vigilant in checking their plants. “While we are unlikely to ever know exactly how myrtle rust arrived in New Zealand, the most likely entry route remains being carried here on the wind from Australia where the infection is widespread,” Mr Yard says. The Ministry will once again partner with the Department of Conservation, local iwi, local authorities and the plant production industries in on-theground management. Members of the public who believe they have seen signs of myrtle rust are advised: • do not touch it, or the plant • take a photo of the rust and the plant • call MPI’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
A COASTAL RESTORATION by Ann Morgan Farm manager Julian Peters runs Tauroa Point Farm situated at the bottom of Ninety Mile Beach. The beef and cattle property owned by Marplow Nominees Ltd is one of the most environmentally exposed farms in Northland.
M
arplow Nominees Ltd won the Farm Stewardship Award in partnership with the QEII National Trust, NZ Farm Environment Trust and the Northland Regional Council Water Quality Enhancement Award at the Northland Ballance Farm Environment awards this year. Julian grew up in the Bay of Islands and wasn’t originally from a farming family. “My mum was a school teacher and dad a cabinet maker/joiner. When I was young we moved next to a big station and I became friends with the head shepherd’s children — they invited me to go mustering with them and I fell in love with the lifestyle,” says Julian. Julian did correspondence schooling
through his secondary years and reared calves as a job. “I reared 1200 in one season when I was around 16 years old and saved my earnings to study and gained my Dip Ag at Massey.” He moved home in 1999 and worked for friends on a dairy farm whilst waiting for a sheep and beef job. “I got a job at Rangiputa Station and progressed from shepherd general to head shephard. I was there for 14 years until I started working for the Plowman’s on this property in 2015. “The experience has been great — it is definitely a lifestyle and is a challenging environment. It is about as tricky as you get.

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

“We are without mains power or neighbours and can only be reached at high tide along the beach and dolerite shelf from Ahipara.” The house and the farm shed have separate solar power systems and power fencing is run from an inverter. Aluminium-coated wire is used on all new power fences to minimise voltage drop and damage from sea air corrosion. “When the farm was purchased 11 years ago there was little effective fencing to prevent cattle roaming the old gumfields, sand dunes, scrub, conservation areas and the Tauroa Point whares. The stock also had access to the dune lakes and this impacted the water quality and grazing wetland vegetation. “Once a year they would do a big wild west type muster and bring all the cattle back into the yards from across the property. “We have spent a considerable amount of resources on the farm and most of the dune lakes are now fenced off and outlet weirs have been installed to maintain higher water levels.” Fencing includes six kilometres of coastal margin retired with a very large buffer zone. Deep gullies had worked their way inland and through the sand country, and in places there was insufficient grass cover to stabilise the sand. The judges noted that the energy and initiatives taken to protect and enhance water quality and biodiversity values in the special dune lakes was outstanding. The property has been reduced to
290 hectares effective and more than 100,000 natives have been planted in the retired areas which are no longer farmed because they are susceptible to erosion. Pest control on the farm consists of bait stations, traps and shooting, and plague rabbits have been brought under control. The herd consists of 300 mixed age mainly Angus cows and two-year, in-calf heifers with autumn and spring split calving, plus their calves. “Replacements are selected and mated as yearlings, while the bulk of the calves are weaned at six months and sold as store weaners,” says Julian. “Around 30 cull cows are sold for slaughter annually along with some two-year steers when pasture availability allows supplementary trading cattle. “The awards were a good experience, especially for meeting other like minded farmers and seeing that you can farm, look after the environment and make money at the same time. “I am a really keen fisherman and love the sea, and water quality is important to us as we get a lot of our food from the ocean. We are in a fortunate position that our water comes from a spring and comes down through the farm and we have control over what happens to it before it hits the sea. “Our goal is to be as sustainable as we can be and create something that is better for future generations. At 35 years old I wouldn’t choose another career, and would definitely encourage others to get into farming.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES June 2017
I began photographing what I saw on my hunting trips and it meant I could share what I had experienced. I love the wilderness and coasts, the stunning rata and majestic rimu trees, rugged peaks and playful antics of undisturbed deer to the comical behavior of seals, but the elaborate dances and the incredible colours of birds always hit the right spot for me.” Years ago Tony had five dogs he trained for field trials and got into duck shooting and upland game became an obsession. He travelled all over the country with his setters and German shorthairs. “I really liked the challenge of training my dogs and shooting birds when they were flying. It takes a lot more skill than with a deer that is standing there unaware of your presence. Then I wondered what it would be like taking photos of birds flying and the passion grew from there.” Tony says it is a lot harder than shooting with a shotgun and there are many components that have to come together to get a decent photo. You have to have light and lots of it and the right technique or you are destined for disappointment. “It is important to get permission to cross someone’s land and it is a privilege to be able to take images of wildlife whilst they are going about their daily life. “We encourage farmers to preserve the wetlands. A good balance of wildlife enriches your life, and children can learn a lot from watching animals and birds interact with each other and survive. “I think one of the most important things for farmers to do is have pest control of rats, cats and stoats. These
animals eat the birds and their eggs, especially waterfowl and swamp birds. “Bird varieties in New Zealand are amazing and many farmers don’t realise what they have on their land, like the spotless crake, which is a bird with very similar colours and shape to a pukeko but grows to the size of a blackbird, and the marsh crake. They are only the size of a sparrow and live in swamps. “They are native and we have found them on nearly every substantial swamp from Wellington to Foxton. Most people have no idea that they even exist let alone on their land.” Tony believes birds need protecting. “Birds help keep waterways open and insect numbers down. If you look around you will see amazing things on your farm. Even pukeko’s help to keep drains open by eating grass around waterways. “Bitterns in particular are now almost critical, some get shot during the shooting season, this practice has got to stop — they are struggling as it is without becoming some bored duck shooters’ target practise.” Tony presents his photos of black kites, owls and fairy terns, to name a few, under his business name ‘Boney Whitefoot’. “One day I came out of the bush to my friend Steve and I took my shoe off to check a blister. A lady said ‘what ugly boney white feet’ and that is how the name ‘Boney Whitefoot’ came about.” Tony has photographed the Koekoea (long tailed cuckoo) in the Pureora Forest Park and says these birds migrate each summer to lay eggs in the Whitehead nests, a bird about the size of a sparrow. “Then they and the chicks fly back the Pacific Islands during our winter. The shining cuckoo lay in grey warbler

he group continually restore the dune as a natural defence against coastal hazards, whilst maintaining and enhancing recreational opportunities. “The project got under way approximately 10 years ago,” said Camp Waipu Cove manager and board member Anton Trist. “The purpose is to restore the natural function of the dune as erosion was a concern for many years. It is really important to have it in front of the campground as well to protect us from the ocean.
“A number of attempts had been made previously to stop the erosion by doing things such as placing concrete along the foreshore, but it is now understood this doesn’t stop the problem and is detrimental to the beach.” The latest stage of the project saw the removal of historic fill material and a 100-metre section of the steep bank reshaped to match the natural dune profile. The beach is a natural habitat for birds such as the New Zealand fairy tern, which are classified as Threatened — Nationally Critical, with a population

of approximately 40 birds and around 10 breeding pairs. NZ fairy terns nest at only four sites, which include Waipu and Mangawhai sandspits. Northern New Zealand dotterels, classified as Nationally Vulnerable, also nest on the beach near Waipu Cove. “Keeping dunes healthy is an important part of keeping a good high tide beach. Holding the line with hard structures such as rock sea walls can lead to lowering of the beach level,” said Laura Shaft, Northland Regional Council’s CoastCare Coordinator. “The coastline naturally moves and the dunes allow movement seaward in settled periods, and landward in rougher times. Having the right vegetation on the dunes encourages growth forward during settled periods whilst releasing sand in storm events where it can form a bar offshore to reduce further erosion.” Spinifex and pingao are the most important plants on Northland’s foredunes as they are very effective at trapping wind-blown sand and are able to withstand the harsh conditions of that part of the beach such as salt spray and lack of shelter from sun or wind. “They are very easily damaged by feet, vehicles and horses. Loss of these plants can lead to sand being blown inland where it causes a nuisance and is lost to the beach system. “We have fenced the restored area to protect the dune and plants. People have respected the fences and made good use of the access steps down to the beach, which has helped the project’s success. “Two years ago we restored 100 metres of dune as the steep bank was being eroded and undermined and the kikuyu and buffalo grasses on it were not able to rebuild it. “By spraying the exotic grasses, reshaping the bank back to a more natural slope, and planting with spinifex and pingao, we have allowed the dune to function more effectively. We have been lucky with settled weather, which has allowed the plants to build the dune seaward. “When we have a storm some of this front dune will be lost, but there is hopefully sufficient width that some plants would remain to rebuild the dune naturally. It is very important, when undertaking dune restoration, to work

Waipu Primary School students brought 2,000 plants to the dunes project back from the erosion scarp and to allow sufficient width for a resilient dune. If you try to push the dune seaward of the natural line, or do not allow enough width, your planting will likely be lost.” There is often a tension between allowing sufficient width for the dune to function naturally and retaining sufficient grassed reserve. “Losing a little grassed area initially results in a gain in the longer term. By doing nothing the reserve will be eaten away over time, but by shaping and replanting, the dune can build forward in settled weather providing a buffer from
erosion of the land behind it. “In this case we were lucky enough to be able to place fill behind the reserve to push it backwards so that although the bank was shaped back several metres, the width of the reserve was retained.” Various groups have helped with the project including students from Waipu Primary School. “They brought 2,000 plantings and learnt how they grow. It’s good for children to learn the importance of dunes and the grasses and how they are important to the environment and work together,” said Anton.

ADVERTORIAL
Solution to pollution by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
What can you say when you realise that soluble synthetic minerals are the cause of toxic nutrient leaching into the environment. You can say, ban all soluble, synthetic, toxic minerals! The farmers are being blamed for this problem. As nutrient leaching has become a risk to the viability of farming, we cannot close farming down, that’s our main income, but we could quite
easily shut down the manufacture of soluble synthetic fertilisers and all toxic chemicals, sprays and drenches etc which are the root cause of the problem. Why don’t we do that! It would clean up our environment overnight — heavily reduce the sickness of soil,

plants, animals and people, also make our farming and production a lot easier as we start working alongside Mother Nature and all that valuable natural capital she provides for free instead of working against her, which is where the chemists have been collecting ‘mega bucks’ by creating problems instead of looking for solutions. If you are a producer, it is time to move with the times and this time is organic time. When we look at ourselves, our animals, our plants and our environment — we all begin as organic. However, when we look at life today, plants, animals and people — although we started off in a pristine organic condition, all life has wound up being full of toxic chemicals and locked into a plethora of medical problems, which means more money for the pharmaceutical giants. What a hell of a ‘chemical treadmill’ that is! Add to that the continuation of chemical production and we are still locked into the same old chemical soup and it is affecting our water supply, our lakes, rivers and foreshore. The main target for the Regional Councils is the dairy industry — in particular, the dairy farmers. I believe that the Regional Councils should shift their focus onto the manufacturers who are producing the products that are causing the problems, such as soluble synthetic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium plus herbicides, insecticides, pesticides and drenches etc. While we continue with these products, pollution will continue to increase. Here at Agrissentials we have an answer to all the above problems and our answers are based upon the planetary
system that has evolved here on Earth and has supported all life for over 450 million years without any intrusion from the chemists, until 100 years ago. Whoever set up the life support system, installed all the checks and balances for life to evolve, multiply and exist in harmony. All life on the planet has an inner ability or strength to be healthy and to survive, whatever the odds. The mineral wealth on the planet is there to support life through the food chain with multi-mineral nutrient rich food that also helps to maintain the immune systems in plants, animals and humans. Minerals are essential for building immunity, providing they are in a completely natural form. With the consumers calling for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food, New Zealand producers need to step up and grab this great opportunity with both hands. Our isolation alone is a contributing factor along with great sunshine hours, the ability to store water and top soils that still have some carbon in them. Agrissentials’ fertilisers re-mineralise the soil, increase topsoil depth and soil water retention, increase worm populations in the soil and increase the health of all life in and above the soil. Here is an opportunity to change direction! Call us today on 0800 THE KEY for a FREE INFO PACK, that’s 0800 843 539 to find out how we can partner with you to find a better way of farming. Director Helen Frances, who returns this year after a break has a line-up of entertainers to complement the entrants throughout the show. Marketing and publicity manager Annie Newall, said she was excited for the Dream World category. “I am really looking forward to the blacklight section Dream Word — Weird and Wonderful. Being a first time for the show, I believe it has potential to offer designers a new challenge and a more
creative and innovative way of using materials under UV lighting that can create that wow factor.” Jayden Randolph an ex-student from Bream Bay College will be stretching his creative skills to impress his local community as he takes on the role of 2017 choreographer. The show is split into three performances. Opening night is on July 21 at 8pm, July 22 features a 2pm matinee followed by the awards night at 8pm at the Waipu Celtic Barn.
Everyone is different and this is certainly true when using nutritional therapy for osteoarthritis. Sometimes these differences are obvious — helping someone in their 80s with advanced arthritis is different from someone in their 40s who have had their first joint niggles. Other differences though are not so obvious. In some people joint pain is more from inflammation while in others more from the actual joint deterioration. This series of columns looks at some personal stories and the methods we used to bring improvements. I have just spoken with someone with significant osteoarthritis. He is in his 80s and has long term osteoarthritis in his ankles, knees and hips which caused significant pain with restricted mobility. He rated his discomfort at 7/10 and was faced with further steady deterioration. He was already doing some positive things through supplements with a good Omega 3 and a joint supplement. What we did was to fine tune his programme and introduce an antiinflammatory nutrition programme.
Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily. “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.”

The main supplement component was to lift chondroitin sulphate to over 1000mg daily combined with curcumin and glucosamine. This is much higher than in many joint products. After only 2 months he now rates his pain at 2/10 down from 7/10. He is both surprised and delighted having lived with this for a long time. Our body, including our joints, is equipped with powerful healing processes which can be overwhelmed when fighting a disease processes. The first goal of nutritional medicine is to get these working again. Once these are activated the body can then set to work trying to heal the problem. In the case of my client the supplements played a huge role in stimulating this often latent healing force. For more information give me a call or email john@abundant.co.nz. HUNTING, FISHING & OUTDOORS ADVERTORIAL
Annual Kai Iwi Lakes trout fishing contest The annual Kai Iwi Lakes trout fishing contest is on the weekend of June 24 and 25. The contest is always the highlight of the northern freshwater fishing calendar and has been running for approximately 40 years, with regular trout anglers coming most years to try and prove their skills, and hope for some luck against their counterparts. Lakes Kai Iwi, Taharoa and Waikare are a group of three lakes known as the Kai Iwi Lakes, and are freshwater dune lakes 30kms north of Dargaville off State Highway 12. Lakes Waikare and Taharoa are stocked each year with Rainbow trout fingerlings from the Rotorua hatchery. Fish & Game New Zealand, Northland Region’s Manager Rudi Hoetjes, says the annual release of fingerlings were released into Lakes Taharoa and Waikare in late May to take advantage of abundant autumn feed, allowing fish to reach takeable size within six to eight months of their release. Those fishermen who have not experienced freshwater angling Kai Iwi style should make this contest the year to sample Northland’s wonderful trout, and experience Northland’s hospitality and Northland Fish & Game Council’s family focussed premiere fishing event. The lakes have been fishing very well over the past couple of years with some very nice trout being caught by anglers with a range of methods as allowed under the Northland Anglers’ Notice. Tales of fishing this contest are talked about throughout the angling fraternity and feedback for this year is that three and four-year-old trout out of both lakes have a great condition factor, which bodes well for an excellent catch for the 2017 contest.
The continued generous support from all of our sponsors has provided a fantastic variety of prizes for the different categories. Tickets are available from McCoy & Thomas Sports and Nola’s Sports in Dargaville, and through Northland Fish & Game and Hunting & Fishing Okara Drive in Whangarei. Please either email northland@ fishandgame.org.nz or phone 09 438 4135 to purchase these tickets. Tickets and rules will also be available from the Fishing Headquarters, Lake Waikare from 7.00am on Saturday June 24. Entry fee is $50.00 for adults and they must hold a current 2016-17 fishing licence. Juniors and children are free to enter but must register for the competition. Fishing commences on Saturday June 24 from 7.00am and closes at 12 noon on Sunday June 25. Camping at the Kai Iwi Lakes is available by phoning 09 439 0986 or search the internet for the many bed and breakfast accommodations close by to the lakes. A barbecue lunch will be provided at the final weigh-in prior to the prize giving on Sunday from 12.30 pm at the fishing headquarters.

alkaran placed second in the Dairy Manager competition of the recent Northland Dairy Industry Awards and he placed third in the 2015 Northland Farm Manager competition and says that entering the competitions was a fantastic experience, which helped him learn more about farming and to meet new people. “Farming wasn’t my original goal but it is now my dream and I want to be a farm owner one day,” said Balkaran. Originally from Punjab, India, Balkaran moved to New Zealand in 2008 to study IT in Rotorua and a friend suggested he look into dairy farming instead. “I decided it could be a good option so did Farming Level Four in Rotorua and worked part-time on a farm in Tokoroa for a couple of years whilst I studied,” said Balkaran. He says he did not enjoy the first year and part of

change my studies so I persevered and then I started enjoying farming more in year two. “In the first year I didn’t know what was going on as I had not come from a farming background, and as time passed I got to understand the whys of doing things.” Balkaran then worked on a farm in Canterbury for three years and moved to Northland three years ago. “The first year in Hikurangi we had 250 cows, then went to 650 and now I am managing two farms of 1,000 cows — 400 autumn and 600 spring and have four staff,” said Balkaran. “My bosses are some of the best bosses in the country. This season I am starting to contract on both farms. I have learnt lots here, you are always working alongside staff and learning from them as well. “My partner, Raman Deep Kaur and I help each other a lot and she does the calf rearing as well as working as a healthcare assistant in Whangarei. “Whilst in Canterbury I did level four in production management and last year I started my diploma.” The farm runs Friesian-cross cows with two cowsheds, a 22-a-side herringbone and a 50-bail automatic rotary. “Working both sheds is interesting, I don't milk much anymore as I do more management but when someone is off I cover for them. “Living in New Zealand is very different. I had no farming background at all and I lived in North India in Punjab. I came from an electrical engineering
background in India and originally came to study IT and to visit the country and am still here.” Balkaran says he has enjoyed the journey and his English is getting more fluent by the day. “I received my residency two years ago and have purchased two houses, and one day I will sell the houses and buy a herd. “Because I have worked in Tokoroa, Rotorua and Canterbury, I picked up different techniques in each place so I use all the knowledge I have on this farm. Learning so many different styles has helped me to progress. “In Canterbury I learnt a trick for AI. I do the tail date straight away because they help other cows to come on heat. I paint Balkaran and his partner Raman Deep Kaur the date on the back so I know work together toward their farming goals and she helps rear the calves on the farm that I have already seen her. “Here we are on a System 5. FORESTRY
ADVERTORIAL
Woodlot harvesting skills Northland Forest Managers wants to make landowners with woodlots aware of the various options available to them in terms of harvesting and marketing their trees with exporters and the domestic market service. General manager Neil Geerkens says seasonally, winter is a good time to make a plan in terms of harvesting and the options available well before summer arrives. “The key thing to realise is that a planning period needs to be worked through and this can depend on the size and complexity of each job. The whole process can take three to six months or longer to plan and line up a crew. “Ideally, now is the time to think so we can line the job up for the following summer,” he said. Neil says in some cases it is possible to harvest throughout the winter but this can depend on a number of factors including the weather. “Often a site visit is reasonably important — access is key to moving heavy equipment as well as knowing if there are bridges, a stream or small roads involved. These are all important factors to understand up front.”
New roads to create access and whether a resource consent is needed will also be considered and thought out during the planning period. “We have direct access to a large exporter at Marsden point and we have good access to the domestic market and local sawmills. There are a number of logging companies working for us with a range of equipment which gives us the chance to use the right equipment for the right job,” said Neil. The planning stage will also give an indication of the possible return that can be achieved for a forest. The closer the mill and or port is to the customer, the better, as this improves the returns. “If it’s a block right in the back corner of the farm that can also prove challenging. Every block is different — it just depends how easy it is to get to.” Neil says that there is hopefully a financial benefit from harvesting for the landowner.

Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd
Another positive month in May with both domestic and export prices increasing by an average 5.5%. This continues a two-year bull run on both demand and prices. It is even more significant in terms of stability. Over the sale period prices changed up or down have rarely exceeded 5% in any one month. All indicators across both export and domestic segments suggest we can expect more of the same. This will in turn continue to see commercial forestry as one of the highest yielding returns of all land based industries in New Zealand. My reports have rarely included much about what is happening in India. Given we can expect significant growth in this market it is worth a review. At present annual log exports from NZ to India are in the order of 1.6 million cubic metres per annum. Most commentators are suggesting this market will increase by close to 100% by 2020. Prime Minister Modi has introduced various monetary changes in order to increase the tax take thus ensuring infrastructure and economic growth. The so called demonetisation of high value currencies has seen a staggering 80% increase over a typical year rise in the number of taxpayers. However a surge of 9.1 million additional taxpayers needs
to be taken in context. In a typical year there is an increase of about 5 million meaning a net gain of 4.1 million in the last 12 months. Prime Minister Modi has set his officials a goal of increasing the number of taxpayers from 65 million to 100 million Further evidence of economic growth is revealed in car sales with an increase of over 12.5 million units on the road in the last five years and in 2016 over 20 million Indians travelled overseas on business or pleasure. There can be no question this tide of change is ever increasing. China remains solid in terms of price and demand but we are seeing a gradual shift in end use with our wonderful Radiata pine increasingly being seen in the furniture and moulding segment. NZ domestic demand remains unprecedented. Construction is at the outer limits of levels ever previously recorded and sawmills are going flat out to keep up. Log supply has settled a little of recent weeks with less talk of mills taking time out due to supply shortages. In Canterbury the picture is a little skewed with companies like ours positioning logging crews in to

fire damaged areas on the Port Hills. Fortunately the trees in the fire ravaged areas, whilst burnt to varying degrees, remain recoverable in terms of usable wood fibre. Even though blacked on the outside, the wood inside the tree is mostly undamaged. The challenge here is to remove as much of the blackened bark as possible during harvest. This would otherwise finish up in the sawmill bark and chip pile which in turn would finish up at the MDF plant in Sefton. Black flecks infused through MDF boards is about as popular as the current North Korean leader is in the United States….not. A further challenge lies in a little beasty called the Burn Bark beetle who likely thinks all his and her Christmas’s have come at once in the Port Hills. The loggers need to get trees down and processed before the beetle makes new homes and starts building family members. Fortunately the onset of winter months should see limited expansion of the beetle population until the summer months. Outside of a couple of questionable leadership currently to be found in North Korea and USA, it looks like stability will continue to rule in terms of softwood log markets for the foreseeable future. Continued demand across NZ domestic, China and India currently has all the hallmarks of continuance. Shipping has flattened off
17
after a solid firming period. Additional volume capacity in the Handy class segment, which is the basis on NZ log shipments, is evident with more vessels opening on NZ as northern hemisphere volumes wane slightly. Shippers are much less ambivalent about settling prices for vessels and appear much more eager to negotiate early contracts. All in all we remain on track as a high yielding land use and we continue to see plantation forestry as a highly profitable if not close to the most consistently profitable land use in NZ. This proves once again, the only way forward for climate, country and the planet, is to get out there and plant more trees.

Warkworth
SPOTLIGHT ON Travelling through Warkworth A short 40 minute drive north of Auckland, bypassed by the busy state highway one, lies the bustling township of Warkworth steeped in history, English architecture and bordering the scenic Mahurangi River. Warkworth is the gateway to the Matakana Coast Wine Country which stretches from Waiwera to the beach at Pakiri. Sheepworld is a sheep farming experience located four kilometres north of Warkworth, famous for its ‘pink’ sheep on display in the roadside paddocks. It offers a unique insight into New Zealand’s wool industry for national and international visitors. Guests can enjoy a step-by-step insight into how sheep are farmed and how the wool is harvested and used. The live one-hour interactive show entertains people of all ages. Meet favourite farmyard animals such as calves, pigs, lambs, goats, ponies, deer and donkeys plus alpacas, emus, possums and miniature horses. There is a cafe and shop for souvenirs and not to be missed is the 400 metre ecodiscovery trail, and across the way is a campsite and campervan park.
The Honey Centre is just down the road from Warkworth and visitors have the chance to taste a variety of different honeys whilst feasting their eyes on one of New Zealand’s largest live displays of a working honey hive. Stop by the Warkworth and Districts Museum to be transported back to the early pioneering days. The museum offers the chance to see how people lived in the 1920s and visitors can wander through display rooms, showing the early days of New Zealand history. The museum also features McKinney and Simpson kauri trees standing in full view of the car park. These are the largest kauri trees on the east coast and are named after early european settler, Reverend McKinney and the Simpson family. Back in the main part of the town, take a walk down the boardwalk that runs along the river bank and maybe stop for a picnic and take time

SPOTLIGHT ON
Exploring the Warkworth area The township of Warkworth was founded by John Anderson Brown in 1853. Situated on the banks of the Mahurangi River which runs through the township, he named the town after Warkworth in Northumberland — England. The Bridge House Lodge restaurant is the oldest surviving building in Warkworth and is a good location to dine and stay. The town’s history can be seen as you walk through the streets following the Heritage Trail (maps are available from the Warkworth i-SITE). Ruins of the first Portland Cement manufacturing works in the southern hemisphere still remain and the Jane Gifford, the country’s last remaining rigged sailing scow, now takes tours down the Mahurangi River, which was once the lifeblood of Warkworth as sail boats cruised the waterways for trading. The location is a gateway to the beach and wine region of the Matakana Coast Wine Country as well as Tawharanui, Mahurangi East, Matakana, Goat Island, Leigh and Pakiri, which are an easy drive from the township. There is an abundance of accommodation choices in the local area, including motels, luxury accommodation, farmstays, boutique lodges and campgrounds for a family experience. Known for it’s wide open spaces and nature experiences,

families can explore the local attractions including beaches, paddle boarding, horse treks, Matakana markets, and the Waiwera thermal pools are not far away. Tawharanui is a predator free environment, a short walk along the Fisherman’s Track which meanders through native bush where endangered birds can be seen and heard. Goat Island Marine Reserve is ideal for beginner divers and snorkelers, with the opportunity to see a variety of sea life underwater. Non divers can explore around the rocks and also get to do a bit of fish spotting and crab finding whilst exploring the rock pools. Further out in the ocean there are locations suitable
for the more advanced divers to explore. Ti Point Reptile Park is the only zoo in New Zealand that specialises in reptiles and displays a unique collection of both native and exotic species. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk or picnic at the tables set around the park and discover these fascinating creatures in enclosures landscaped to suit their individual requirements. Lizards, turtles, alligators, skinks, geckos, tuataras and bearded dragons are just some of the creatures you can meet. Warkworth also has a vast selection of shops to wander through and explore including a wide variety of cafes and restaurants to choose from.

Unnecessary rules removed
Federated Farmers successfully took action to have the draft hazardous substances rules in the Whangarei district plan halted and Northland farmers no longer require resource consent for using hazardous substances on-farm. “Farmers would find themselves needing resource consent from the council for hazardous substances that are allowed by existing government legislation, if the draft went ahead,” says John Blackwell, Federated Farmers’ Northland provincial president. The Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act (HSNO) already provided comprehensive rules for managing hazardous substances, while the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 required users and handlers to be trained and certified. Draft rules were also unnecessary and complicated and left farmers in a quandary over what they actually had to do to be compliant.
“The draft council rules would have been duplicating these existing controls for no extra benefit, and there was also a risk that council rules would be inconsistent,” he said. “If you have ever tried to follow the draft rule table with permitted quantities by class, it’s very difficult to use, both for farmers and council staff.” Hazardous substance products are often made up of several classes and so multiple different quantities could apply to a single product, for example, diesel has multiple classifications as it is a flammable liquid and has toxic properties, being a skin irritant, a carcinogen and an aquatic ecotoxin. Each of these classifications had a different allowable quantity ranging from 20 tonnes down to six tonnes, leaving everyone unclear what amount of diesel was permitted, or how many litres this would translate to. Under HSNO, any amount is allowed on farms, so long as the correct signs are displayed when storing over 1,000 litres or 10,000 litres. Learn farming in the cloud With communications technology advancing in leaps and bounds and high speeds and dexterity enhancing home computing, there’s never been a greater opportunity available for rural education online. Learning Cloud NZ offers a wide range of courses covering all aspects of farming, be it animals, crops, organic, marketing, science — the list is extensive. Study can be undertaken from anywhere in the world and among courses on offer are, for instance, Advanced Diploma of Alternative Agriculture programmes which have been developed in response to industry demand and are specifically designed to equip graduates with workready skills. Each participant will be trained and assessed in theory and in practical tasks. The course information points out that ‘the looming food crisis has been created by energy-consuming, broadacre systems that rely heavily on chemical inputs. These systems need to be urgently dismantled and replaced by healthy, environmentally sustainable, alternative farming systems. Innovative leaders — who are prepared to meet the challenges of repairing the damage caused by broad-acre. Chemical based monocultures — are urgently required’. There is an immediate need
for agricultural leaders who can respond in an intelligent and environmentally aware manner. Alternative agricultural enterprises look toward creating new markets and new ways of ‘doing things’ — by value adding or by designing market niches not able to be readily filled by mass market competition. Animal behaviour is another cloudbased course of interest to animal psychologists, veterinary assistants, those working in zoos, wildlife parks or nature reserves, pet owners, animal trainers, farmers, naturalists, or anyone else who works with or has an interest in animals. It is also a subject of interest for those studying psychology generally since much of what we learn from animals can be ascribed to human behaviour and lead to a greater awareness of ourselves. This course explores different theories and models of animal behaviour and particular characteristics of different groups of animals — dominance, hierarchies, mating, cooperation, animal intelligence, aggression, and so forth. Each student is also ultimately able to conduct their own research topic on an
animal of interest to them. Each lesson culminates in an assignment which is submitted to the school, marked by the school’s tutors and returned to you with any relevant suggestions, comments,
and if necessary, extra reading. Full details of the extensive courses available, together with information on fees can be found at https:// learningcloudnz.co.nz

to conform and very difficult to entertain another idea. Back in 2002, some farmers regarded me as a ‘round earther’ because I began to seriously look at running my farm on biological principles. It doesn’t work, they told me. It’s airy-fairy, they laughed. That’s not how we do it, they said. Until 2002, when I decided to put some other ideas to the test. I challenged the belief that good production was determined by a high usage of nitrogen. I discovered that it’s not, and took the farm from growing 14 tonne dm/ha/yr using 150 units of nitrogen/ha/yr to 19 tonne dm/ha/yr by only using 30 units of nitrogen. Here’s some other ‘round earth’ things I discovered: Farming practices that work with the soil’s biology grows significantly longer root systems. The roots on my farm measured 800mm. That in itself mitigated leaching and grew better grass. Biologically correct soil nutrition grows nutrient-dense feed that has far more palatability. This type of grass can be allowed to grow longer and can be grazed clean by cows at 3,300kg/ ha. With a longer grazing period more grass is grown, meaning less dependance on bought-in feed. When all 16 soil nutrients are in their right

percentages, the biological activity in the soil increases significantly. This increase in good organisms produces more enzymes which digest the feed in the cow’s gut. This results in better conversion of feed to milk. You do not see weeping walls or effluent management machinery on biologically efficient farms. That’s because the better digestion rates significantly reduce the solid matter in the effluent. Also, the transfer of good biological activity from the soil-grass-gut-effluent means that the pond contains a higher ratio of fibre-eating bacteria. These microbes liquefy the pond. The higher ratio of good soil organisms suppresses the activity of soil pathogens. This causes a drop in animal sickness — mastitis, facial eczema, foot rot, and the need for remedial measures. Higher biological activity creates better soil physiology. This increases drainage, which reduces pugging. It also raises the soil temperature, which shrinks your winter season length and reduces dry periods because of the extended root systems. That’s what I discovered from 10 years of biological farming. Our focus now is to teach other farmers how to move forward.

Urea — it’s not as good as you think it is So who would fill their car fuel tank up knowing that they end up with only using 30% of the fuel they had just put in. Apparently this is what happens to a lot of people when it comes to using Granular Urea on pastures and crops. The international data is out and has been for years showing that at best only 40% of the urea applied as a solid is ever taken up by the plant. In the worst case scenario sometimes only 10% is used after an application. Urea alternatives or options to enhance the activity and utilisation of Urea: •• (A) Add soluble humate[carbon] granules to the urea at 5-10% ie-50-100kg/tonne of urea — in addition — research carried out by a Professor at Lincoln University showed by doing this there was a 30-40 reduction in nitrate-leaching and ammonia volatilisation. •• (B) Use EF Bio-Rocket — this is a highly complexed nitrogen fertiliser we have developed over the last 10 years which deals with a huge range of issues that soil applied urea creates. One simple example is that Urea displaces a reasonable amount of plant available calcium [reference Texas Agricultural Extension Service] — this results in lower plant yielding weights and mineral density.
•• (C) Liquid Foliar urea — research results show this is more than 3 times more efficient that solid applied urea — this can be further enhanced by the addition of Carbon atoms to the liquid solution further enhancing it efficiency. •• (D) Consider other biological alternatives eg — granulated EF Nitro-Cal — Foliar, Feeding Liquid Urea with a carbon source like molasses, sugar, or better still a combination with fulvic acid and seaweed extracts. •• (E) Anionic Pasture Spraying or DCAD — (Dietary Cation Anion Difference) — this directly altering the mineral intake for lactating and dry dairy cattle. A lot of our clients are doing this now and can’t believe the health of their cows — it’s simple a cow requires 70 minerals and vitamins a day to function and perform at her peak. We are now starting the dry period. Another season has gone by and it is time to refresh and take life a little easier. Some of you may even go away on a holiday. Cows are gone for the winter or, if we have them on the run-off, we need only feed them and leave them to it till tomorrow when we must feed them again. We don’t have to get up so early in the morning for milking and apart from the air temperatures life is good. We all need breaks and time away to refresh.
It is the same for a cow. They need a dry period. They need a time of rest. They need to be able to lay down in a dry comfortable place out of the rain and the wind. I have said in previous articles that cows are lacking resting time under normal circumstances during the milking season. Even on the best farms, cows are being deprived of resting time because there simply isn’t enough time in a day for a cow. I know it sounds silly but our dairy cows are over-worked during the milking season. That means that the rest during the dry period is even more important. However, when I drive through the countryside during winter I see many cows on winter crops — the management of which is critical for the cows’ wellbeing considering the cows that have died because of mismanagement with fodder beet. But, apart from the potential nutrition problems there is also a problem due to the lack of proper resting facilities. You may think that this just doesn’t make sense because the cows don’t do anything other than eating and
resting, but look at cow behaviour in the paddock. We all know that a well-fed cow’s normal behaviour during the day is grazing, drinking, laying down and resting. Cows don’t normally spend a lot of time standing. If they do there is a problem. The cow may be sick or it is raining or it is too hot and the cow is under heat stress. Now, when we look at cows on winter crops we see them spending a lot of time standing. This is not necessarily because they are sick or because it is raining. It is because there is nowhere for them to lay down and be comfortable especially when it gets muddy. Even in those muddy conditions, cows will lay down but only if they just can’t stand
any longer. Why is this important? Because tired cows don’t perform. Tired cows are under severe stress. Tired, stressed cows are much more susceptible to lameness. Sometimes the difference in numbers of lame cows from one season to the next is due to the wintering conditions. I know that cost needs to be kept to a minimum to run a profitable farming operation but if you want to calculate the true cost of the different farming systems you need to include the lameness cost during the upcoming milking season as well as the empty rate and mastitis cost. Much more research needs to be done in this area to get a better understanding of the true cost. It is quite likely that the cheapest system may be the costliest.

Northland in national spotlight

Northland’s farming expertise and best environmental practice will be centre-stage when the Northern Regional Council plays host to its peers in showcasing the region to the nation. The occasion will see delegates from 10 regional and unitary councils from around New Zealand visit Northland for two days in a local authority tour ahead of a national local government conference in Auckland. NRC chairman Bill Shepherd says Local Government New Zealand is scheduled to hold its three-day annual conference in Auckland from July 23-25. Given the event’s relative proximity to Northland, the NRC has successfully floated the idea of hosting some of the 16 regional and unitary councils that make up LGNZ’s ‘regional sector group’ on a pre-conference tour of the North. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase both Northland itself — and some of the wide variety of work the Northland Regional Council does on behalf of its communities — to fellow regional and unitary authority members,”Mr Shepherd said. At present 39 people from 10 councils are currently signed up, with the costs
of the July 20-22 being met by those councils taking part. The programme includes a visit to an award-winning farm with pest control work and bush restoration. The delegates will spend two nights at Waitangi and the participating local authorities include regional councils from Southland, Otago, the South Island’s West Coast, Greater Wellington, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Waikato, the Manawatu-Wanganui area as well as the Tasman District Council. Their programme also includes a tour and cultural show at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, a kauri forest bush walk in addition to the farm visit. Delegates would also travel along Ninety Mile Beach to find out about co-governance arrangements in place there, and visit Oturu’s award-winning Enviroschool, which features beehives, chickens and an orchard. Whangarei’s multimillion dollar Hopua te Nihotetea floodwater detention dam
is also on the list as is the regional council’s expanding poplar and willow nursery at Mata. They will also tour NorthPort and NIWA’s Bream Bay research centre. “It will be a privilege to show fellow local authority members — some of whom may never have been to Northland before — what the region has to offer”, said Mr Shepherd.

When the winter winds blow Northland has had some early signs of winter, with temperatures dropping sharply in the face of southerly air flows, an indication that more is on the way as winter sets in, and farm focus turns to animal welfare. Stock need body temperature within a comfort zone — their ‘thermoneutral range’ to keep to optimum energy use. For most grazing livestock, an animal becomes too cold and thermally stressed if the air temperature falls below a certain level — its lower critical temperature. This temperature varies with species and within species at different stages of the production cycle. They lose heat in three main ways — by convection to the air, radiation, and evaporation. Sheltering against cold, wet and windy weather can benefit livestock productivity and welfare in a number of ways including better food conversion efficiency and increased growth rates. Shelter is one way to reduce wind chill and therefore the impact of cold weather. Mature grazing livestock are generally very well-adapted to maintain a comfortable body temperature regardless of the weather. In winter, as long as they remain well-fed, and have good body condition, their body metabolism produces enough heat for them to withstand cold or wet weather over prolonged periods. Breeds with thick coats or fleece are insulated
against heat losses. Mature animals also instinctively seek shelter if it is available. The Animal Welfare Act 1999 establishes the fundamental obligations relating to the care of animals in New Zealand. These ‘duty of care’ obligations are described in more detail in the associated Codes of Welfare. All sheep and beef cattle must have access to shelter to reduce the risk to their health and welfare caused by exposure to cold. Where animals develop health problems associated with exposure to adverse weather conditions, priority must be given to remedial action that will minimise the consequences of such exposure. Particular care may also be required for dairy animals overwintering as these may not be as ‘thick skinned’ as other stock classes. Wind chill is a major threat to livestock welfare and lamb survival. The main issue with wet spells is the impact on the pasture and soil through pugging damage. Damage to soil over wet periods can severely reduce pasture yield between 20 — 80% for four to
eight months (depending on soil type, severity of the damage and assuming remedial action is taken) after the pugging event. Restricted intakes will affect cow condition and if the soil is pugged, water will pond on the surface for longer. Crushing, bruising, and burial in the mud of pasture, will make it unpalatable to stock and difficult to eat, reducing utilisation by up to 50%.

Two decades of tyre service All About Tyres is a brand which is synonymous with great customer service in the Whangarei area and owner Des Imms has been in the industry for around 22 years. He has gone on to open two tyre businesses, with the latest being All About Tyres Bridgestone Tyre Centre in Ruakaka. The brand is a family legacy for Des, who bought the store off his father, Des Imms Senior in 2015. “He’d been operating in the area for years and was well known by locals for his great service,” says Des. “I want to continue building that reputation while growing the business.” Des opened his first store in Kamo two years ago and ever since has been providing Whangarei locals with quality products, great service and industry expertise. Last year, he decided to make the move into the Ruakaka area, opening on the main highway. Des says the area has long been neglected by tyre businesses. “There hasn’t been much out here in the past but now the area is definitely growing and we wanted to be the first to operate there.” Ruakaka is set to be an important location for commercial business, which is one of the driving factors behind choosing to operate in the area, says Des. In Ruakaka “we started from just an old converted shed,” with

The age of the station wagon is over — the era of the crossover SUV is firmly here to stay. But what does that mean if you still want the convenience of that long, flat boot space and the lower operating costs of a stretched sedan? Is there room in the new world of bigger rims and jacked up ride heights for something to truly usurp the kind of cars which took us to innumerable childhood camping holidays? Ssangyong are among those who say yes — and they’ve brought something new to the table to back up their assertion. Taking the platform of their break-out hit — the funky, compact little Tivoli — the Korean automakers have given it a tweak and a stretch, creating the new Tivoli XLV. The original combined everything the world enjoyed in the original supermini — funky twotone paintwork, crisp retro-inspired lines, nimble handling and a low fuel bill. Now it’s been given the kind of extra boost in space which we used to see in big Commodore and Falcon sedans when they became the station wagon or estate model. This renders an impressive 720 litres of boot space, with the option for even more when the rear seats fold flat. In standard configuration that means room for five with plenty of gear — the ideal family touring machine. Dad’s old Valiant may have been twice the size, but this modern alternative packs in more comfort, more technology, and importantly a ton of safety systems unheard of in the days of cassette T H E

tapes and tartan blanket seat covers. As well as a full suite of airbags and an electronic stability programme, electronic brake-force distribution and anti-lock brakes work together to ensure that the front and rear wheels brake proportionately according to the number of occupants and the weight of the onboard load. The economical 1.6 litre engine under the hood delivers 7.6 litres per 100km efficiency while still producing 126 horsepower — in a vehicle which is light and agile in city traffic despite its carry capacity. And with the option to select
a steering mode from comfortable to sporty, once you take to the highway this is no mundane people mover. Ssangyong have made a name as a clever alternative, and with the original Tivoli they made a bold statement, claiming a new sub-sector in the market. Now they’ve done it again, with a fresh twist on a popular concept.

Off the beaten track by Andy Bryenton
Adventure is rarely found inside one’s comfort zone. That’s an adage which has remained true since the time of the hardiest early explorers, and one which still holds true today.
Classic combination — with its big 644cc single cylinder and wire spoke wheels, the off-road heritage of the dr650 is clearly apparent

the head thanks to years of refinement and customer feedback. A combination of plenty of power from that 644cc air cooled, single overhead cam four stroke mill and a smooth five speed gearbox means there’s plenty of down-low grunt and grip, as well as long legs for cruising. And while every panel, guard, fender and component is tough to take the knocks, it’s a handsome beast as well. Weight has been pared back, too, adding to the crisp handling characteristics of what has always been a sure-footed model. Speaking of sure footing — and long legs — there’s even an option to drastically lower the seat height on the dr650, allowing those of a less towering stature to plant their feet comfortably at traffic stops. Lighter, tighter and still the kind of machine which takes off-road punishment in its stride, the dr650 continues a long line of Suzuki off-road dominance which has seen this recipe for success imitated — but rarely beaten. And with the complete package coming in well below the 10k mark in price, there’s plenty left in the budget for all the camping and outdoor gear which this classic adventurer can haul to just about any point on the map.
W
To really find the great outdoors, you need a machine that’s equal to the challenge. And when it comes to motorcycles, that means sticking with a tried and true recipe. While ‘adventure’ bikes designed with road tyres and a suite of creature comforts abound for the two-wheeled traveller, the classic combination of a big, torque-delivering single pot engine, bulletproof and simple, mated to a highriding but responsive frame is still king. That’s why, after years of producing award-winning and competition beating off road bikes, Suzuki still stick to the original template when they upgrade their dr650 series. The latest generation of the big adventure bike is uncompromising as a tool for leaving civilisation behind, offering paramount reliability, agility and grunt to stomp down even the gnarliest terrain. The surprise here, then, is not that the dr650 is a consummate off-roader. The real trick is the calm, smooth road manners of the big Suzuki singlecylinder bike on tarmac. Offering the best of both worlds can sometimes be a difficult proposition, but Suzuki’s engineers have hit the nail squarely on

Passengers on quad bikes Carrying a passenger on a quad bike that is not designed for more than one person can increase the risk of accidents by making it more unstable, more difficult to control, and more likely to roll over. Worksafe New Zealand has clarified the circumstances in which it is acceptable to carry passengers on single-seat quad bikes in consultation with Federated Farmers, Beef + Lamb NZ, and DairyNZ. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, persons conducting a business or undertaking such as farming must identify and manage risks arising from work, so far as is reasonably practicable. WorkSafe’s position on quad bikes is that single-seat quad bikes should not normally be used to carry passengers.
“WorkSafe’s guidance is that you should use the safest vehicle for the job. When carrying a passenger this would mean using a vehicle specifically designed for more than one person,” said Al McCone, WorkSafe sector lead — agriculture. WorkSafe acknowledges that farmers and others using quad bikes for work need the policy clarified so they clearly understand what is acceptable in terms of carrying passengers. It is only acceptable when there is no reasonable alternative having considered factors such as availability

of alternative vehicles, terrain, and rider and passenger capability. In those cases where a passenger is taken, appropriate mitigation measures must be taken — including limiting speed, briefing the passenger on best practice riding, and avoiding unsuitable terrain. If carrying a passenger on a quad bike is a recurring necessary practice, you should be looking at acquiring an alternative vehicle suitable for the circumstances as soon as is practicable. The clarification also stipulates that carrying a child as a passenger on a

quad bike creates a particular set of risks that you need to consider. As with the general principle, you may only carry a child as a passenger if there is no reasonable alternative and following an assessment of the related risk and risk-mitigation measures. “This is a good example of WorkSafe and farmers working together to find practical solutions. We all want fewer accidents and injuries on our farms, so the important thing is that we always consider risk and this guidance emphasises that,” said Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive Sam McIvor.
