Essential Freshwater Policy amendments The government has only released a high-level summary of the proposed policies and will not be releasing the actual standards and National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management until mid-year. “It is therefore difficult to be definitive in our assessment, as the devil is in the detail as to how the policy is translated on paper into a rule,” say Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive Sam McIvor and chair Andrew Morrison. “That said, our preliminary assessment is that the government has listened and made improvements in some critical areas of interest to sheep and beef farmers, including: Significant narrowing of the grandparenting provisions, but we need to see how these will exactly look in the standards. DO YOU NEED TO

Northland student Camryn Stewart has received an academic scholarship from Waipu-based timber manufacturer Northpine. As a Northlander born-and-bred in Kaitaia, Camryn is in her fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Forestry Science at the University of Canterbury. She has spent some of her practical coursework interning for another Northland company, Summit Forests, completing practical experience in plotting and helping with trials. “The financial grant from Northpine is a huge help. As a student, you don’t really have a lot of money, and it is such a massive help financially. I am putting it towards my course fees and extra course costs like field trips,” she says. “The variety and flexibility of the forestry industry appeal to me, and I enjoy being outdoors on the job. I am excited about the possibilities and what my future holds. I am extra grateful to receive this support from a company in Northland. I extend my thanks to Northpine for their generosity.” After graduating from her Bachelor of Forestry Science, she hopes to work in forestry management or forestry marketing and supply chain operations. Northpine is a privately-owned timber manufacturer based at Waipu with a distribution centre in Silverdale. The company employs more than 60 people and processes only high-quality structural pine grown in the north. Its specialist range of large-dimension timber beams and square posts, sold under the brand name Northbeam, is available nationwide via building supply merchants.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

i n m g r a e f x g c e n i ll u e s n r ce u P by Ann van Engelen

Sheena Waru, the assistant manager of Chris and Jane Mitchell’s 195ha property, milking 520 cows was named the winner of the 2020 Northland Dairy Manager of the Year competition.

I

n her fourth season, at 33 years old, Sheena entered the awards after encouragement from the Mitchells to step out of her comfort zone, take a risk and be challenged. “It is a personal achievement for me. I am proud to be a positive example to my three children and show them that it is never too late to try something new,” says Sheena. “Four years ago, my husband William was farming and was injured in a motorbike accident. The challenges of his injuries meant I took on the head role at home and work. William slowly weaned back into work, and I now work alongside him on the farm. “One of the biggest strengths of this business is our employers. It is rare to find one who is so willing to help their employees to progress. They are

fantastic mentors who understand work, home and life situations. Their support for all team members is something I have never seen on any farm.” As a young mum, Sheena completed her education through Correspondence School, a decision she is very proud of after having her first child at 16 years old. “A local man rented us a flat to help us, and we managed to build a positive life together. The struggle to study was real, and it has made me who I am today. I continued my education with Primary ITO and gained level three in dairy, the Primary ITO Dedication Award, and I am currently studying towards level four apprenticeship. “I am so grateful for the opportunity from the Mitchells. They have made me feel as if someone other than my family

Sheena and William farm together and say their employers have helped them to achieve their farming goals

believes in me. They gave me a chance to show my knowledge and skills and realise my potential. “My career change to farming has been great. We have Friesian/Jersey cross that milk really well — producing 1.5kg/MS totalling to 471 kg/MS a year. “We split-calve, which I like, as it keeps us in a routine. You are always out in the field, taking everything in. You don’t just see the cows and their production but your land, the maintenance that may need doing and how it is all managing. “We grow maize, and produce 600– 700 kilograms of dry matter a hectare, being around 11 tonnes in total off a grass base adding 1.5 tonnes of palm kernel each cow. We try to utilise the grass as much as we can and use PK if they are drying off or a special mix to keep the Fat Evaluation Index levels moderate because too much PK in the milk jeopardises the milk quality. “We usually milk twice a day, but this year we are doing once a day because

of the drought, which has been a real challenge for us, along with everyone else. The recent rain was much appreciated ,and you can see the green coming through. “At calving, we get the odd set of twins but usually single births. We use Fibre Fresh feed with milk from the cows, and last year we utilised the NZ Grazing Company to promote live weights and condition. That worked very well for us — we are still yet to see some of them calve this spring. We keep some for replacements and are increasing the number annually and aiming for 50/50 spring and autumn. This year, we are hoping for less calving difficulties and achieving our live weights goal. “William and I love what farming offers. No day is ever the same — you become a Jack and Jill of all trades. Every day presents different challenges, and you just get in there and do it. For now, I want to absorb the role and gain more knowledge and experience

Grass is utilised to its full capacity with maize and PK used as supplementary feed

and work toward becoming operations manager and do the farm planning. “Chris and Jane are brilliant employers. It is a real family farm with the whole family helping with the calves, moving stock and everything else when they are available. Chris’s dad is the health and safety officer, and his brothers help as well. Having this type of support, including with my own family, is encouraging.

“They are more than bosses, and that is hard to find in the world today. They gave me the opportunity starting as relief, to farm assistant to where I am now. They have been brilliant with William too and saw our potential and helped us to achieve goals. We are extremely appreciative. It’s not all about the money, it is also about relationships, and to me, that is one of the most important things to have.”

HELICOPTER PILOT’S

EXPERIENCE by Ann van Engelen

Northland wood carving artist and helicopter pilot Sue Dinkelacker has recently rejoined the Northland Rescue Helicopter Services team after a 10-year break.

T

he service has accomplished more than 21,000 rescue missions since 1988. “Flying is in my blood and something I have always done. My parents were sports pilots and flew gliders, and my mother attained a commercial aeroplane licence,” says Sue. “My dad was a glider designer and builder. My siblings and I would help build them. Dad held world records, and I also have world record titles. Being a woodcarver, I enjoy designing to delight

and carve birds and people. I create bowls with a specific theme like a frog coming out or little mice running around the rim. “I went on my first ever helicopter ride at 24 years old and was absolutely hooked. They are very three dimensional and a wonderful experience. With aeroplanes, you drive them down a runway, but with helicopters, you fly. I started as a pilot in South Africa where I was born, flying for Court Helicopters — the largest company in South Africa

Pilot Sue Dinkelacker recently rejoined the team at the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service

at the time. I first worked for Northland Rescue Helicopter about 12 years ago, and also flew for Westpac Life Flight in Wellington and the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance before touring in Malaysia to fly for one of the largest helicopter companies in the world, flying out to oil rigs in the South China Sea.

“In the early days being a female pilot was a rarity, and it often surprises people, but it is good to have diversity. With rescue choppers, in particular, you are winching, landing in confined areas, maybe chasing boats offshore — there is so much diversity.” Sue says New Zealand’s environment is

very challenging with its unpredictable weather, hills and remote areas with low natural light. “The engineers service and maintain the helicopters while the pilots make sure they are prepared, fuelled, inspected, and ready to go. We get a huge variety of call-outs, anything you can possibly imagine. It could be to a forestry, boat, motor vehicle or farming accident. It is nice when we can land where a person needs us and get straight to the hospital.” Recently Sue attended a tractor rollover in a flat paddock. “The person was very fortunate with a broken femur and a minor head injury. I wondered how on earth can you roll a tractor here, but there was a deep ditch that wasn’t visible from the surface. It showed how constantly mindful of surroundings farmers need to be. We also attended a quad bike rollover of a young boy who misjudged a culvert and didn’t gauge the road right. “The Northland Rescue Helicopter was the first in the country to set up a system of referencing the GPS for bad weather. We use GPS coordinates, which are handy to have on your fridge door or in your phone to give the emergency dispatcher if you need help. It is always good to advise them of any wires on the farm because they are very hard to see, especially electric fences or wires with no proper power pole. They can cause accidents. “We fly with two pilots who are qualified to fly through clouds. This is important during bad weather as we can

make an instrument approach into most terrains where sites have been prepared for landing. We were the pioneer in the field, and I qualified as a designer of such routes and truly believe flying with reference to instruments is a huge safety factor. We can also connect to aeroplane instrument routes and go anywhere in New Zealand. “If you are thinking about a career in aviation, make sure it is absolutely what you want to do and that you are 100 per cent dedicated because it is not an easy road. It requires sacrifice and perseverance, but it is fulfilling and exciting. “The rescue helicopter can absolutely be the difference in someone’s chances of survival. There are many safety factors to consider, and it is very challenging to fly during winch missions, at night time, and during every weather condition. There are so many skill sets we employ to get the aircraft to where we have to go. We have a lot of happy stories, but it is amazing how people can get into trouble. “We fly with intensive care paramedics, and sadly, sometimes we cannot save the person, but we know we give our best efforts to help people survive. Our engineers, pilots and medical staff are extraordinary. I am pleased to be part of the team. As pilots, we are in awe of the medical staff we work with. Every now and then someone will say they were a patient in the helicopter. People are very grateful for the service, and we appreciate seeing the positive impact it has on people’s lives.”

Antenatal classes help farmers by Ann van Engelen

Carmen Lett has practised as a midwife for 12 years and is offering online antenatal classes to help people in rural communities and beyond obtain childbirth education.

“I

was born in Townsville, Australia and moved to New Zealand in the 1990s with my family for my parents’ work,” says Carmen. “From a really young age, I had a fascination with babies and the birth process. My mum had Michael Odent’s picture book on birth that I loved reading. I went to Epsom Girls’ Grammar, where I had to start thinking about a career. The careers adviser recommended midwifery as it was a perfect mix of babies and birth. “I trained straight after finishing my schooling. I was one of the youngest in my year, and although I didn’t have a lot of life experience, I was certain

it was a perfect choice. I married and had been a midwife for four years when Aidan and I had our daughter Rosie. My clinical skills remained the same, but I gained empathy. I am not a better midwife but a different midwife. When a client says it hurts, I know it does. Rosie was breach and got stuck so needed an emergency cesarean. “I returned to working part-time at Middlemore after four months. Once Rosie was sleeping through, I did night shifts and have done them for the past seven years. We now also have three sons, including twins. Asher and Jude were induced, one needed the suction cup, and one was born normal, and our

hospital ladies would ask about feeding and changing diapers. I thought if they don’t know now, they will struggle at home, so I launched Hatchedantenatal. co.nz to provide online classes. “The programme costs $89 for unlimited access for six months. I

recommend starting in the second trimester so you can revisit the content if there are issues after birth, like sleeping or feeding. “I give researched non-biased advice. I don’t want anyone to walk away, thinking there is only one way to do things. I interview a car seat technician, a sleep consultant, touch on mental health, how to bath, swaddle and put a nappy on to name a few topics. “Pregnancy and childbirth should be a good experience, but that’s not always the way. Being informed if you encounter things that don’t feel right is a good start because midwives don’t always have the time to discuss every concern. I now work independently and have about 40

patients. It is very important to have care throughout a pregnancy. There is very little that I have not seen from normal lovely births to very high risk and sad situations. I want to reach the farming communities as they often can’t be away from the farm or don’t want to go to classes for personal reasons. “I recommend things like feeding on demand within reason and how to increase milk supply by eating wellbalanced diets with foods like oats and taking herbal supplements such as fenugreek or blessed thistle and drinking lots of water. “We are not anti-formula, but the more formula used the less breast milk is made. Some people go by the book

A midwife for 12 years, Carmen says there is not much she hasn’t seen when it comes to birth

and still have a terrible milk supply. You need support in every decision you make, including bottle or breastfeeding. Mothers shouldn’t feel bad having an epidural for pain relief either. I provide good, researched information with the aim of presenting a non-biased view. “I also recommend visiting a GP if things don’t feel right within yourself, whether physically, mentally or emotionally. There are awesome support networks to utilise, and I have Facebook

support groups that I link people to. One is a public forum, and one is a private group, which has more content with questions and answers. “I am here to help, ultimately it is about people knowing there is support no matter what they need. You don’t have to do it completely on your own. Babies are my favourite thing in the world, and I want parents to feel supported and not judged with any decisions they make regarding childbirth.”

Control after a dry summer by Erica Faber — Technical Manager, Just Avocados

This year, due to our exceptionally dry summer and its effect on root health, avocado growers will need to be even more diligent about phytophthora root rot control. We all know through Covid-19 that a host, be it person or plant, with compromised health or additional stress will be more susceptible to disease. If your orchard is not under irrigation, then the dry summer has had a significant impact on root growth and mass — the severity of which will depend on your mulch layer, orchard environment and nutrition programme. The drier than usual soils during summer would also have resulted in less uptake of solid fertiliser. That means going into the cold and wet winter months we have trees with both a root and nutrition deficiency and effects on root health will be more significant. A heavier crop load and flower bud intensity will also add stress to the tree. Phytophthora root rot (PRR) is a disease that affects close to 5,000 plant species across the globe and is the most serious avocado disease world-wide limiting production. PRR is the result of root infection caused by a soilborne oomycete, Phytophthora cinnamomi (Pc). After infection by Pc, the feeder roots start to decay and turn black and brittle as the root tissue rots — giving rise to the name phytophthora root rot. It restricts water and nutrient uptake by the roots and leads to branch-dieback, tree decline and if left untreated or is severe enough, eventual tree death. The visual symptoms of a tree with PRR include small, pale green or yellowish leaves that often appear wilted during high temperatures. The canopy is sparse, and as branches die back and leaves defoliate,

the fruit and branches become exposed to sunburn. To manage PRR effectively, I recommend an integrated approach of cultural and chemical control as well as rootstock selection. If you are using chemical control alone, you are only treating the symptoms and not changing the conditions under which Pc is thriving. The use of tolerant rootstocks to control PRR is proposed as being the ultimate method for managing this disease in a new planting situation. Using a rootstock that has a high tolerance to Pc, eg Dusa, is the most effective and easiest control strategy. Only buy certified disease-free trees from registered, certified avocado nurseries. It has been estimated that 80% of all plant problems start with soil/root problems. For established trees, a successful strategy against Pc is to enable the development of healthier, stronger root systems. Ways to achieve this include reducing competition from other plants and weeds under the tree, increasing organic matter through mulching, introducing biological fungicides such as certain Trichoderma, which actively grow on roots and ‘protects’ them from Pc, and controlled use of irrigation. For detailed information on control strategies, please see our latest article on phytophthora at justavocados.co.nz/ phytophthora-root-rot-control.

Can I improve my Joints? (Part two) by John Arts

Last edition, I mentioned a client who went from having very sore knees to know being able to move with much greater freedom. We looked at the first lesson we can learn from this. All healing comes from specific healing systems in our body. We also saw that these healing systems could be restricted or even dormant if our diets tip the scales in the wrong direction. The second lesson is very important. The gap between healing and continued disease is often much less than you think. What surprised my client is how little he actually had to do to activate the healing capacity in his knees. The first step is to slow or stop unwanted inflammation. That does mean you need to think about foods, but in most cases, it is simply substituting one food for another. It can be swapping the inflammatory high omega-6 cooking oils for olive oil and adding fish oil supplements. The rest of his programme was not difficult. I started him on an initially high dose of my joint formula. That meant that initially, he was getting 1,600mg of high grade (small molecular size) chondroitin sulphate with 1,600 mg

Chondroitin is the most important as it directly improves the health of cells that repair and maintain cartilage. Curcumin targeted inflammation while glucosamine helped with joint function. It sounds complex, but all this meant was after breakfast, taking two of the joint capsules and three fish oil then repeating this in the evening. Yes, there is the discipline of having to take the supplements and, of course, fitting these into his budget. The results meant he has much less pain and more mobility. Innovations need breathing space by Andy Bryenton

With the nation’s largest collective agricultural event on hold, thanks to coronavirus precautions, a whole year of farming and agricultural innovation have not just disappeared. As in other nations, where the shows are even bigger and the crowds even larger, those stories and advancements need a place to shine. We’ve put together this ‘Field Day in your mailbox’ for the same reason patrons of the two biggest similar events in the world (Germany’s Agritechnica and the USA’s Minnesota State Fair) have also turned to other media to get their point across. With a widespread customer base hungry for any innovation that can pare dollars off the cost of farming, or add bulk to the bottom line, both of these shows are postponed until 2021. However, in a two-edged proposition, tech, which was first floated at November 2019’s Agritechnica is now coming onstream in New Zealand. The usually jam-packed Minnesota show’s sellers of giant ag machinery have taken to the internet and print media to tout their latest offerings. New Zealand knows how to put on a field day, but the prestige of winning an engineering award at Agritechnica is the ‘holy grail’ of machinery and tractor designers, similar to the Tokyo or Geneva auto show for carmakers. Standout

machines that have won innovation awards at the 2019 event were set to land in the Waikato this month. They are still there, at dealerships, and often just require a phone call to arrange a test drive. Similarly, the Minnesota State Fair is regarded as the biggest on Earth. Numbers exceeding the population of the South Island will pass through its gates each year, and it’s the USA’s showcase of the biggest in harvesters, tractors and implements. This year, a sense of personal safety has seen it closed, amid mixed messages on Covid from the US government. “If there’s no fair this year, it’s because they love us and want to see Everyone next year,” said an associate of fair manager Jerry Hammer. “He’s right. “That’s the heart of the matter. We want to see you all for many years to come, when we can celebrate in true state fair style.” How we can celebrate in style is to celebrate the spirit of a proper field day.

That means checking out all the latest and greatest in farming advancements here on paper, then supporting the local economy by calling the appropriate

dealerships and putting them to work. This way, 2021 will be a field day for us all, as our rural sector shows the rest of the economy the way forward.

Goodbye to the obstacle course by Andy Bryenton

It’s practical, they say. Certainly, it shows off some engineering and construction prowess and gives drivers a chance to see how today’s utes and off-roaders can handle the rough stuff. However, deep down, we know that trying out the ‘obstacle course’ test drives at field days or an ag fair is good, blokey fun. This year, the biggest mud pits, log craws and hill climbs of them all will go wanting, but with winter breathing icy down farmers’ necks the urge to put a reliable, capable new machine in the shed is front and centre. Many rural folks who operate a ute or off-roader for work purposes will find themselves at the end of a planned three or five-year stretch and at a loose end, wondering how to evaluate the best of the best without the back-to-back tests offered by a big trade show. The answer, of course, is to angle for an on-farm test at your place. That is ideal, as it lets you take a look at how a machine handles on the turf it’ll be tasked with taming. You as the owner, know about that body stretch by the back gate, the loose gravel behind the sheds, and that treacherous incline up to paddock three. Why run a simulation when you can see how it goes on the real thing? It’s also a good gauge of how a dealer feels about his product, and how close they really are to

your place when it comes to after-sales service. If it’s just not possible to have a go on your own block, it’s well worth hitting the papers, magazines and YouTube for some reviews, before taking a more limited test drive in dealercontrolled circumstances. Often existing owners That is not really how to choose a new ute. The fun of set-up are all too eager to talk field day tests is one thing; reality is definitely another about the shortcomings of a machine they’ve invested in, and shy about asking for extras or special it’s easy to sort the sincere critiques offers. The ‘shrinking’ of the global from mere sour grapes. Ask the dealer supply chain also means it’s a good idea about known issues from previous to consider the availability of parts from models; a good brand will admit they far away, at least so long as borders have put engineering time and money remain closed and other nations are in into upgrades. It’s also worth noting that considerable turmoil. Put simply, we cannot afford this government by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

We are about to go $50 billion into hock with no real knowledge of how we are going to pay for it and no real strategy for keeping the people who will pay for it in work. That is the sobering prospect facing New Zealand today while we have a government totally inexperienced in crisis management and in the two years before Covid-19 showed a singular ineptness and inaptitude in just about everything it touched. Put simply, I don’t think we can afford or even trust this government. My thoughts go to the thousands of people who have lost their jobs. Job losses are inevitable under Covid-19, but that doesn’t make it any easier to accept. Nor does it excuse or make any more comprehensible the decision of this government to keep us at level two for at least a month longer putting even more jobs in jeopardy. I accept that we have to make the transition to level one safely. Surely that time has come now with no new cases, nobody in hospital and absolutely no evidence of community transmission. What this government is suffering from is acute paranoia and in the process is cutting off the economic lifeblood of the country. There is hope. Farming will continue to carry the country — even more so when the drought ends. Our innate

resilience and innovation will kick in, as well. However, industries such as tourism and the thousands of jobs that go with them will hurt — and hurt badly. Moreover, while we remain in level two, even opening our borders for transTasman travel to give our tourism sector a much-needed jolt seems to be stymied by a government that has seized an unprecedented amount of (peacetime) power over us and is reluctant to let it — or us — go. Something has to change — and quickly.

Tree handling made easy Innovation and technology are changing the tree management scene. The Magni rotating Telehandler is called the game-changer in the construction market but also brings a safe and effective way to cut down, delimb or resize trees. The giant mechanised tree handler can take hold of a tree in its robotic arms, sever the trunk with a mobile chainsaw attachment, and with its extended hydraulic arm, remove and dump the result. Key features for Magni Telehandler are its four-wheel drive and tight turning circle and 21m to 51m boom range — all with a 40 km/h transmission. A customised cab and boom protection preventing debris from entering the boom or breaking the cab glass means enhanced handling safety. There is an overload protection feature with a quick drop mode if the tree becomes too heavy to handle. There is also a remote capability to operate the machine from outside the cab for safety and better viewing. The saw unit has a swinging chassis with active suspension, and the lower unit can be tilted to avoid bending of the saw bar. There’s an automatic chain tensioner no matter how long the machine is in operation, and this is

Sarah followed in the footsteps of her father and grandfather to become a thirdgeneration optometrist, graduating with honours from the University of Auckland, after first completing a nutrition degree at the University of Otago. There has been a member of Sarah’s family practising optometry since 1950. Sarah spent her school holidays working in the family practice in Oamaru and realised from an early age that it is a very rewarding job and one you could be proud of. “The more rewarding aspects of the job are helping young children that are struggling at school, seeing shortsighted people be able to distinguish individual colours for the first time, and helping the elderly retain their driver’s licence,” she says. “It is important for everyone to have regular eye exams.

The prevalence of disease increases with age, and a lot can be slowed or stopped if it is discovered in time. UV is extremely damaging to eyes, so sun protection is important if you are in the sun for extended periods of time. “I have two staff members other than myself. Donna is a qualified dispensing optician, and Kathryn is a part-time receptionist. “We cater for all ages, budgets, fashion styles and any other individual needs. We are very lucky to have sophisticated equipment, which allows us to pick up eye disease in the very early stages.” Sarah says she appreciates having the ability to discover sight-threatening pathology in some clients that can get treated in time and retain vision is a very important aspect of the career.

“I am originally from the small town of Oamaru, and being able to practise in another small town is wonderful as they are so much more friendly and personal. Helping people when you see them down the street is something you just don’t get in the city. “Call Mahurangi Vision Centre for an appointment and make sure your eyes get the care they need. Wearable Arts rescheduled by Andy Bryenton

With Covid-19 restrictions still dictating the numbers of people able to attend indoor events, and the deadline approaching for 2020’s entrants, the Dargaville Wearable Arts event’s coordinators have opted to forego an exhibition this year, concentrating their efforts on an extravaganza early in 2021, more befitting of the scope of their contestants’ creativity. A reduced, limited and constrained Dargaville Wearable Arts show would not capture the imagination and vision of the works on display, nor allow an audience large enough to guarantee nobody missed out on the show. That’s the opinion of those tasked with bringing the event to life. Instead of pushing on with limited capacity and little time, a date has instead been set for May of 2021. All current entrants will receive extra time to design, craft and perfect their creations. While this necessary small hiatus also gives new entrants a chance to step forward and devote the intervening months to realising their artistic visions. On a technical level, the wearable arts management is pleased to announce that many of the important ‘behind the scenes’ figures who made last year’s event so memorable are back, and that others who had been drafted for 2020 will step up for 2021.

Avoid Drink Driving BE THE SOBER D FOR A NIGHT

Covid-19 restrictions may have postponed 2020’s Wearable Arts, but plans are well underway to come back strong in early 2021

These include creative director, Terri Donaldson, and the team of visual projection artists from AwhiWorld who transformed not just the interior of the Dargaville Town Hall with their

advanced light and motion technology, but the exterior of the town’s Muddy Waters Gallery as well. With a little extra time to work with, and secure in the knowledge

that the Covid threat is receding, the organisers of this landmark annual event are confident that May 2021 will be a time to remember for all involved.

Pre-employment and annual health checks Staffcare provides pre-employment, annual health monitoring, vaccinations and a range of other services for a wide range of companies including industrial, horticultural, agricultural — any industry, in fact, where employees face at work risks. “Providing pre-employment and ongoing health checks such as drug screening, eyesight, spirometry, audiometry screening and physical assessments is good for the employee, good for the employer, and ultimately good for the company or farm,” says Staffcare company owner Bernie Peck. “We start with an initial preemployment health check and can assess staff regularly to monitor potential changes in health status. This also helps if there is an ACC claim down the track because if someone is compromised prior to an injury, it is already on file.” Health monitoring gives companies a number of points towards SiteWise certification. “Many farm employers are too polite to ask possible employees to undergo a pre-employment health check, but it is normal in other industrial areas. We take some of the responsibility off the employer as part of the interview process. Farmers can view the service as a safeguard against unexpected factors that could mean an employee isn’t suitable for a role — an expensive and time-consuming mistake. “There are a lot of health compliance risks for employers, including lung

hazards, noisy machinery and pesticide spray use to keep an eye on. A large proportion of the logging and trucking companies use our services as it takes some of the guesswork out of health concerns.” Nurse manager, Amarlee Jagoe says Staffcare helps to protect employee health through the early identification of illness and injury that could potentially affect the workers. “We do quantitative fit testing of respirators, The team at Staffcare Whangarei provide blood and urine screening pre-employment and annual health checks for biological exposures. In most industries now, pre-employment health checks are the ‘norm’ and potential candidates often expect to attend one as part of securing a new job. Pre-employment health assessments are undertaken for the benefit of both the employer and the employee for the following reasons:

• To establish the overall health of the prospective employee to undertake the work offered. • To ensure that the prospective employee will not be a health hazard to others. • To identify health problems that may require ongoing advice and or management. • To establish baseline data prior to commencing employment. • To screen for drugs that may affect ability to perform a role safely prior to commencing employment. StaffCare is a locally owned business and our staff are all Northlanders. Our main clinic is conveniently located in central Whangarei however our nurses also travel- Kaitaia to Albany. We can also arrange health checks nationwide. So take some of the guesswork and worry out of one of you most important roles as an employer.

Knowing dairy compliance If you are a dairy farmer, sharemilker, dairy farm manager or dairy farm operator, you need to understand and meet your legal requirements regarding the dairy industry. Farm dairy owners and operators have legal obligations and duties, including knowing the Animal Products Act 1999 and Animal Products (Dairy) Regulations 2005. A farm dairy operator is a person, company or organisation responsible for some or all of the activities at a farm dairy. That may be one person or multiple people or organisations. Other people also need to know the legal requirements for dairy operations. It includes farm dairy assessors, Ministry for Primary Industry-recognised farm dairy Risk Management Programme evaluators and verifiers. Other people and organisations who have an interest in supporting dairy farmers in the production and harvesting of milk are also included. Under the Animal Products Act, all farm dairy operators must operate under an MPI-registered RMP. The RMP must be verified by an agency recognised by MPI, and the farm dairy must be audited by a farm dairy assessor. In most cases, the dairy company you supply milk to is registered as the farm dairy RMP operator. To make sure you meet minimum food safety requirements, they issue you with a milk supplier’s handbook and a milk

All farm operators need to be aware of dairy compliance rules and regulations

supply contract or terms and conditions of supply. The contract or terms and conditions of supply describe what you need to do to meet minimum food safety requirements. Companies may set out extra requirements to meet, such as the requirements of specific countries they are exporting to and other legal and commercial obligations. If you are harvesting milk for multiple activities, your RMP for milk harvesting activities must cover all intended uses of the milk you harvest. For example, if you supply some of the milk to a manufacturing company such

as Fonterra or Westland and you retain some to manufacture products such as cheese on your own farm, you need to cover this activity in your own RMP. The RMP owned and managed by the manufacturing company may not meet all of your regulatory requirements. If you are not sure whether you need your own RMP, contact info@mpi.govt.nz. For more information on the legal requirements for farm dairies, including the Animal Products Act 1999 and Animal Products (Dairy) Regulations 2005, go to legislation.govt.nz. Plan winter grazing

As the temperature gauge starts to drop, Federated Farmers and allied groups have an action plan in place to head off any issues with winter grazing. “Winter crops are gradually being opened up to stock, and although the weather has been kind so far, we all know that winter will arrive before long,” says Federated Farmers president Katie Milne. “Rural people know that a photograph taken of stock in a muddy paddock seldom tells the full story in terms of what the farmer has in place to protect waterways from run-off and ensure good animal welfare. “Nevertheless, these selective photographs can generate negative publicity, and we want to make sure any concerns are proactively addressed, and that any farmer needing advice or support gets it early.” Federated Farmers Southland vicepresident Bernadette Hunt says in her province intervention groups are ready to go. “If someone raises a concern with winter grazing, a group comprising representatives from Federated Farmers, Dairy NZ and Beef and Lamb

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

NZ will discuss the situation and ask the most appropriate person to contact the farmer, talk through the issues and, where necessary, identify strategies to mitigate problems. “If the farmer is not willing to accept industry support or take action, environmental concerns will be passed on to the local regional council and animal welfare concerns to the Ministry for Primary Industries. The vast majority of farmers really want to do the right thing, and often education or fresh ideas are all that is required.” A supportive approach will be essential this year, with many farmers already under significant pressure from poor growth conditions, drought or flood impact and imposed overstocking due to the processing constraints of Covid-19. If anyone is concerned about winter crop grazing practices anywhere in the country, fill in the online form at fedfarm. org.nz — search ‘winter grazing’, or call 0800 327 646.

Venison exports reopen A catalogue of approved animal species for human consumption has been issued by the People’s Republic of China. It includes venison from farmed malu, the Chinese name for red deer, along with more traditional farm animals and poultry. “The inclusion of our deer is great news for venison producers and marketers, as it will make it clear to officials across China that the sale and consumption of our venison are legal and safe for Chinese consumers,” says Deer Industry NZ chief executive Innes Moffat. “Chinese consumers have a growing appreciation for quality animal proteins, making China an increasingly important market for our venison. It was taking about 10 per cent of our exports until the end of 2019. “When it became clear that the Covid-19 virus had jumped the species barrier from wild animals, China clamped-down on illegal sales of wild animal meat. “Although our venison comes from farmed deer, this put a virtual halt to our exports there. Given that deer are still widely seen as wild animals, it is easy to see how some regional and border officials might have become uncertain about the legality of our farmed venison.” Mr Moffat thanks the officials in China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs for being so responsive to the industry’s requests for the status of NZ farmed venison to be clarified.

YOUR LOCAL NORTHLAND LIVESTOCK CARRIER

Innes Moffat, Deer Industry NZ chief executive

“The news is really very timely. China has seen a dramatic slowing of the incidence of Covid-19, to the point where Wuhan, the source of the pandemic, is reporting no new cases. Restaurants in many regions are reopening, but with social distancing. It is a good time for us to be selling our delicious venison there. Restaurants in some of our other main markets are also reopening before they have fully eliminated Covid. How consumers will respond to this situation is unclear; which means there is less certainty about when trade will recover to previous levels.”

China’s official catalogue of animals approved for human consumption names three deer species — malu (Cervus elaphus), sika and reindeer. In its Journal of Livestock and Genetic Resources, venison from NZ malu is the only imported red deer variety listed. “Deer are being treated by China the same as other livestock raised for meat. Some other species are permitted to be used only for traditional Chinese medicines, or for only for their fur, with their use as food prohibited,” says Mr Moffat.

Alternative to brand X by Andy Bryenton

It would seem like a slivered razor of a market niche, small enough to cram in a credit card sideways and twist. However, the luxury ute is big business, as people come to demand more from their average workhorse. Today, simply lugging a big load and handling like a car will only get you to the velvet rope, not past the bouncer. It shows in the bowing out of one of my personal favourites, the X-Class Mercedes ute. Sure, it was a Navara with added panache and style, but is that such a bad thing? Customers thought it wasn’t worth S-Class money, and it’s gone from the lineup sooner than anticipated, leaving those who want a ‘statement’ ute spoiled for choice. There is a way, though, to have a huge, Obelix the Gaul sized slice of cake and eat it too. We’re talking about the Ram, the all-American, aircraft carrier sized truck, which eschews the title of ‘ute’ at all. The marketing says it eats them for breakfast, and with gigantic air intakes like those on its slab-faced front, this could actually be a literal warning. It’s truly a feast of superlatives. Longer, wider and able to carry a chopped-up ute of most other brands in the back, the Ram packs a 5.7 litre Hemi V8, like a true muscle car. It’s the stablemate of insane, snarling beasts like the Dodge Viper and Demon, and the frankly unhinged Tomahawk, which looks like something Batman would order, then be too afraid to ride. Inside, however, it’s all space and leather and wide vistas, with proper right-hand drive

Ram Laramie — acres of muscle, acres of steel and a whole lot of truck for those who want more than a normal ute

delivered by none other than Aussie car wizards Walkinshaw. That’s right. The ones who did the business on all those classic Bathurst smashing super V8s. Now, it must be said that the Ram, even in its smallest Laramie form, is not subtle. It’s a big, bone-crushing handshake from a good ‘ol blue-collar bruiser. It wears that extra size and

power with deceptive ease. Sure, it won’t win any parallel parking competitions against a Micra, but it will do what a big pickup should, which is take thing A to point B, no matter how heavy or far. Original Rams were used to pioneer oilfields in the UAE; the king there loves them so much he commissioned a working model of one, four storeys tall.

Then there’s the thrill of that big Hemi, an engine with a pedigree that spans the Dukes’ General Lee and the Challenger from Vanishing Point. Classic stuff. The best part? Exclusivity. It is not the truck for everyone, which means you’ll have the ultimate hard to find luxury in the modern ute market — the ability to stand far, far out in the crowd.

The designer of almost everything by Andy Bryenton

What do the Farmall tractor, the classic US muscle car, Le Creuset cookware, the coke bottle, NASA’s Skylab space station and the pop-up toaster have in common? They, and a bewildering list of other things, were all designed by the same man. Raymond Loewy might just be the most famous man you’ve never heard of, and his legacy literally defines how the modern world looks. Born in France in 1893, by 1908 he’d already designed an awardwinning aeroplane. Moving to the USA, he took a job as a window scene designer for large department stores like Macy’s. However, his true calling was in industrial design. By the end of the 1930s, he was responsible for modernising the tractor into the shape we know today, inventing the shape of the refrigerator that we recognise, and streamlining steam locomotives into art deco monsters. He then pressed on with the pop-up toaster, the famous HarleyDavison ‘knucklehead’ motorbike, the Schick electric razor, the rotary floor polisher, the Sunbeam kitchen mixer and the Greyhound bus. It seemed that he was working up to his best. Raymond gave us the classic ‘curvy’ coke bottle in the 50s, along with the aforementioned Le Creuset cookware. He was also called on to design cars such as the Sunbeam Alpine and Hillman Minx. Nevertheless, it was the coke bottle itself that inspired his work on the Studebaker Avanti, and hence, a whole generation of curvy muscle

WE CAN Raymond Loewy’s design philosophy of pushing the boundaries while increasing comfort and utility came to dominate consumer culture

cars. By lying the bottle down, Loewy got the idea for a profile with a flat nose, bulging hood scoop and flared guards, smooth cabin profile and a little ‘kick’ at the end, where the base of the bottle shadowed the placement of a boot spoiler. Look at a GTO Judge, Dodge Challenger, Chevy Corvette, Trans Am or any number of classics to see this ‘coke bottle’ silhouette. Later in life, Raymond didn’t slow down, designing the interior of the

Concorde, the logos for the US Postal Service, Shell Oil, Exxon Mobil and the US Coast Guard, the livery for Air Force One and Skylab. His imitators were many; so many, in fact, that we now live surrounded by the visual echoes of Loewy designs. A quiet and unassuming genius, he retired in 1980, and passed on in 1986, leaving behind the best part of 75 years of classic automotive and lifestyle design.

When one was not enough by Andy Bryenton

These days, engineers keep finding ways to squeeze more horsepower and torque from the traditional tractor engine. At the same time as, amazingly, also improving emissions and fuel economy, tractor designers have embraced smart turbocharging and commonrail fuel delivery to work wonders. Moreover, how about the problem of needing more power back in the olden days? Tractors of the 1940s and 50s could not be specced with higher and higher-powered modern diesels. Instead, farmers and engineers had to improvise to fit the task at hand. The result is a series of ‘conjoined twin’ tractor designs, made for different applications but equally interesting in their oddity. The impetus for the ‘centipede’ double tractor came from one British farmer, George Pryor, who was frustrated with ploughing thick clay soils with a single Fordson Major. His idea? Remove the front axles from two of the powerful machines, creating an articulated four-wheel-drive monster with a huge

overhanging ‘snout’. It was controlled by the driver in the rear and soon displayed its ability to harrow and turn even the thickest earth. The local Fordson agents, Doe and Sons, saw their niche. By 1958, they were exporting doublebodied tractors to the USA, where many imitations were spawned. Not before attracting the attention of some local farmers who had already experimented with double power, however. In the plains of the midwest, the task was not to cut through thick soil but to draw the biggest implements possible. Vast swathes of productive land could be tamed at a time if you had the know-how and the power. A local farmer named Harry Lee, from Elnora,

Indiana had been welding together hybrid ‘monster tractors’ for years before the Doe machine came on the scene. However, he mounted his with the engine parallel, inspired perhaps by twin-mill hot rods and dragsters. Lee, and fellow American Dewight Garrett, both developed side-by-side engined tractors (up to three bodies wide) to

handle bigger implements, sloping hillsides and massive towing power. Today, the need for double or triple bodies is gone, though the successor of the ultra-powerful articulated tractor lives on in machines like CASE IH’s giant tracked Puma, which echoes the Doe Double Drive in layout despite overtopping it in sheer stature.
