A dairy consultant, a district mayor, and a leadership coach are finalists in the 2018 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year awards. The winner receives a scholarship prize of up to $20,000 to undertake a professional/business development programme. Hawke’s Bay dairy consultant Rachel Baker, Tararua district mayor Tracey Collis, and Southland dairy leadership coach Loshni Manikam are in the running for the coveted dairy award. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony during Dairy Women’s Network’s conference in Rotorua on Thursday March 22. “The three finalists highlight the wide scope of skills and expertise evident among women in New Zealand’s dairy industry,” says Dairy Women’s Network CEO, Zelda de Villiers. “The role of women in this industry is unique and unparalleled, and we are proud to recognise and celebrate their success. The skills and experience Rachel, Tracey and Loshni bring to the dairy industry range from local government and leadership development through to board and governance expertise. “These women show an unwavering commitment to progressing the dairy industry internationally, yet still retain their links and involvement at a grass roots level in their home regions and communities.” Jo Finer, Fonterra’s general manager NZ Industry Affairs, says “No other award in New Zealand
recognises and encourages specifically the capability and success of women in the dairy industry.” Rachel has held several roles during her career, including veterinarian and dairy consultant. “It’s an opportunity to highlight that being involved and giving back to the industry, is a fantastic way to meet new people and open doors to new experiences and possibilities,” she says. Tracey is an advocate for the representation and advancement of regional farming businesses and farmer well-being. She was elected mayor of the Tararua district in 2016 and has a passion for farming, business and the environment. She says the nomination is an honour, and it is humbling to be acknowledged by her peers. “I think it demonstrates to other dairy women how easily transferable our skill set is and how much we contribute and offer to the industry, our communities and New Zealand.” Loshni is originally from South Africa and has a special interest in human behaviour and is dedicated to the development of the current and emerging leaders in the dairy industry,

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
Farming now in
the blood BY MIKE ISLE
Most farmers are born farmers because it is in the family and it is in the genes, but Grant and Danielle Petterd found farming down a different track. He had trained as an electrician and until his late-20s he plied that trade in Auckland whilst Danielle was a commercial banker.
L
ast year the couple were runnersup in the Northland Sharemilker/ Equity Farmer contest. “We were about as far from farming as it gets, but farming was never far from my thoughts,” says Grant. “I always wanted to be a farmer but can’t quite put my finger on why because I don’t come from a farming family. I just knew I wanted to be a
farmer and grow a farming family.” When Danielle became pregnant and took maternity leave, the couple took what in retrospect can be best described as a courageous step. “We decided to give farming a go and accepted an assistant farm manager position in Taranaki. I was prepared to try it for a year but knew deep down that we wouldn’t be returning to Auckland.”

Danielle says that the bank she worked in kept her position open but she doubted she would return to the job. “I was promoted to farm manager by the end of our second year but our hearts remained in the north and we bought into an equity partnership and started sharemilking in Northland sixand-a-half years ago,” says Grant. “The partnership purchased a 266-hectare farm six months ago and that has become our home with our daughters Sarah and Ruby, 640 cows, two dogs and a turtle.” As a measure of their success, last year Fonterra chose the farm as one of four in Northland to showcase the work farmers are doing to protect rural waterways through the Open Gates initiative. “We literally opened the farm gates so that visitors — mostly from adjacent towns and cities — had the opportunity to check out what goes on behind the farm gate and see first-hand what we are doing to improve waterways,” he says. “This includes substantial riparian planting, fencing of all waterways, and all effluent is retained on the farm and applied to pasture as fertiliser. Fonterra reports that nationwide dairy farmers have invested over $1 billion in environmental initiatives over the last five years. “We welcomed the opportunity to open our farm to public scrutiny and are proud of the work we are doing to protect the environment. Like most farmers we are concerned about the unfounded negativity surrounding land use and water protection by dairy farmers. “The Fonterra initiative to open the farm gates is a great step in correcting those misconceptions and we hosted 75 visitors in December, mostly from nearby Kerikeri, plus volunteers and neighbouring farmers — it was a great success. We are still buzzing with the success and we enjoy supporting

the farming community. My time as an electrician is long forgotten and Danielle is now a regional leader for Dairy Women’s Network and is the chairperson for the local playcentre.” DWN has the aim of helping empower women in dairying, and has 9,500 members nationwide. “The mid-Northland area that myself and my management team are responsible for has 250 members,” says Danielle. We meet regularly and whilst it has a social side, the main purpose is to give dairy women the opportunity to learn new skill-sets that they employ in the management of the farms or in the wider workforce. The practical workshops are proving popular and our membership is growing swiftly. “For Grant and I, farming is our focus and it is in our blood and although we may be relatively new to it, we have never once regretted the move from the city to the country, particularly now that we have a young family. “Making such a large transition has shown us one of the best things about
farming and that is the support we have had from other, more experienced, farmers and we have had that right from the start. “Now that we are more established, the Open Gate initiative and the work that I am doing with the Dairy Women’s Network gives us the opportunity to give something back to the farming community. It is a way of saying thanks.”

Courtney Davies became interested in showing cattle at primary school when she chose to show a calf at her school Ag day.
“M
y eleventh birthday coincided with the local A&P show and after participating in the event I became more serious with showing,” says Courtney. “I was not brought up on a farm, nor is there any farming in our family, so I have had to watch others and learn from experience. Some people my age go out and party with their friends, I show mine in a cattle ring.
“You never know what opportunities can come your way from attending an event. I love being involved with Ayrshire cattle through my stud Inca Ayrshires.” Courtney believes the Ayrshire is under-represented as a breed, making up only one per cent of the national herd as people typically think Jersey or Holstein cows. “Ayrshires have so much to offer but had a reputation as being somewhat

naughty. I believe that this comes down to nurture and nature. I began by purchasing the second-tier animals that farmers were willing to sell, looking at overall confirmation and production potential before concentrating on specific traits, and now have 15 animals in total. I don’t have the opportunity to pick an exceptional calf out of 160 heifers like other people.” She says the early mornings and late evenings involve general show preparation such as clipping and nutrition. “It is so satisfying to be able to walk into the ring with an animal you know you have prepared to the best of your ability. My focus started in the handling classes and I have had several successes. “The Young Handler classes put us all on an even playing field as it was directed towards the handlers, rather than the quality of the animal at the end of the lead. I won the overall Northern Districts competition six times of the eight years I competed. “I entered the National Competition in 2016 and received the New Zealand Young Parader title and represented the country at the 2017 Royal Melbourne show in Australia and placed fourth in Australasia. “You are randomly assigned cattle at the show an hour before the class starts and that can be challenging. I am currently the Northern Districts’ youth representative for the Royal Agricultural Society and enjoy having the resources to be able to assist young people who think they can’t be involved just because they do not live on a farm.”
Courtney breeds her own stock on her lifestyle block for competing at shows around New Zealand
Courtney started breeding six years ago with a basic knowledge of genetics. “I look at the maternal traits and investigate compatible sires in the hopes of producing a lovely calf. It has been difficult but farmers and my parents have been a great support. “I have met some lovely like-minded people and females in the ring are becoming more popular. Being self taught has been very rewarding and breeding has given me tremendous confidence.” Last year Courtney received the Shirley Crothers Memorial Award and

travelled to the UK Dairy Day — the equivalent to our Dairy Event. “The Ayrshire breed originates in Scotland, so it was special to travel there and learn different showing and breeding techniques from their people. “Youth from different parts of the United Kingdom prepared cattle on behalf of studs as part of the Ayrshire Young Breeders Team. It was neat to see the trust these farmers placed in the young people to prepare their top animals and as a result our cow won the Supreme Ayrshire award.
“I am completing a Masters in Natural Science and hope to continue into a PhD focussed on agricultural microbiology. It is important to have the skills to tackle problems with a fresh approach and that is the attitude I have with my breeding too. “You have to be both strong-minded and kind hearted and overcome the negatives to be successful. You need to show you care for your cattle and enjoy what you do. “If you don’t enjoy it you shouldn’t be doing it.”

Sheep springing forward by Ann Morgan With the aim to deliver the nutritious goodness of New Zealand sheep milk to consumers across the world, the Spring Sheep Milk Co. are combining their knowledge to create the best practices for farmers to deliver top quality products.
“O
ur goal is to build a sustainable, high-value primary industry that is innovative and collaborative through the PGP programme,” says CEO Nick Hammond. New Zealand has specialised in meat and wool sheep for the last 150 years, whilst Europe uses milking breeds. “Globally, sheep milk is a US$8billion industry. In Europe they are blown away that we aren’t milking sheep, and it’s a tragedy as we are phenomenal at dairy products and renowned for animal husbandry in sheep.” The Spring Sheep farm has more than 2,000 sheep and utilises state-of-the-art technology to ensure the milk is kept at the highest quality possible. “We use modern, world-class low agitation
systems and protect milk quality every step of the way. The milk is held at less than two degrees Celsius,” says Nick. Lambing is from August 1, and the milking season finishes around the end of March. The production is 15-20 ewes per hectare, similar to a system three or four dairy herd. “People sensitive to regular cow’s milk, generally don’t have trouble consuming sheep milk. Sheep milk is naturally gentle on the stomach and has up to twice the amount of calcium and protein, and it tastes delicious too. “Creating the optimum New Zealand farming system for dairy sheep and growing an industry is our goal. People in the Mediterranean and Asia grew up on alternative dairy, and are not surprised at its quality nutrition and
CARBON LOCKUP
Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the cost of supplying the world with dairy products. But it doesn’t have to be. Planting forests is an easy way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. An average dairy farmer could plant nearly two hectares a year in radiata pine to totally offset the gases their cows make. It wouldn’t even have to be on their own land. The farmers profit from the trees at harvest – and then replant. There’s a lot of win in this package.

digestibility benefits. Sheep milk does have advantages over traditional dairy operations, and research shows significant environmental benefits too. “In terms of genetics, the normal New Zealand sheep will produce 60-120 litres per year. We haven’t had access to the top dairy genetics, but MPI recently enabled high-performance sheep to be imported and they can produce 400 litres across flocks — or up to 1,000 litres in top performers per year, making a farming system economically viable.” The PGP Sheep — Horizon Three programme has been established for long term innovation. It plans to build an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable sheep milking industry targeting $200M-$700M in sales by 2030. The programme has gained positive results and has had a great response to a tailored nutrition programme that doubled milk yield on a per ewe basis. “New Zealand sheep have adapted to our environment for wool and meat. We need systems to allow dairy sheep to thrive here. Our pasture is one of our advantages, but we are researching other needs such as nutrition and indoor housing,” says Nick. “The current exporting sheep milk farms run 2,000-4,000 sheep. That scale is not accessible to the normal farmer due to farm size so within the

We brought over John Ryrie, our farm manager, from the UK — he was born and raised in Scotland and has more than 20 years’ experience working on sheep dairy farms throughout Europe. Wake-up call for red meat sector
Alternative proteins are likely to become a major competitor to some of New Zealand’s red meat products and the sector must respond with a clear strategy, according to new research. The report commissioned by Beef and Lamb New Zealand found that although alternative proteins are currently manufactured in small volumes, largescale production of burger patties and mince is likely to be a reality within five years. The study says governments, investors and consumers are seeking alternatives to red meat because of sustainability, climate change and
animal welfare concerns, among others. The research demonstrates a strong future for the New Zealand red meat sector with a demand for naturally raised, grass fed, hormone free and antibiotic free red meat with consumers prepared to pay a premium for such products. Beef and Lamb CEO, Sam McIvor, says the research was commissioned to better understand shifts in food, production technology and consumer trends.

“The technology to produce a consumer ready alternative protein burger is here and is pushing for commercial scale. However, the research clearly articulates the significant opportunities and prospects for the New Zealand sheep and beef sector, if we respond effectively to the rise of alternative proteins. “The same forces driving the significant investment and demand for manufacturing alternative proteins, including concerns about industrial farming, health and the environment, offer us a chance to differentiate New Zealand red meat internationally.” He says free-range natural sheep and beef farming in New Zealand is a world away from intensive factory farming practices (feedlots) and ‘big food’, which has tarnished the reputation of red meat. “It’s vital we leverage our competitive advantage and rigorously protect it — grass fed, hormone free, antibiotic free natural protein — to capture higher premiums and raise the value of our exports.” In the US alone, retail sales of labelled fresh grass fed beef including domestic and imports reached US$272 million in 2016 — sales are doubling every year. The sector is also continuing to improve its environmental performance. “We recognise that agriculture has an environmental impact and we are
Sam McIvor, chief executive of B+LNZ
working to minimise this. We’ve made some headway, as the carbon emissions from sheep and beef farming are actually 19 per cent lower than 1990 levels. We are perhaps the only sector currently meeting New Zealand’s 2030 target. “The global population is swelling with a forecast one billion extra people to feed by 2030. New Zealand’s total agricultural production can only feed about 40 million people. We can’t and don’t want to try to feed the world. Alternative proteins will have a place in this growing market, as will red meat. “Far from it being a crisis for red meat, we see these trends as a tremendous opportunity and we want to focus on raising the value of our exports and on gaining higher premiums.”

The benefits of turmeric My motorcycle tour around Rajasthan in India in 2015 was a feast for my senses, including of course, my taste buds. Most curry recipes contain the brilliant yellow spice turmeric. It has also been a mainstay of Indian Ayurvedic medicine where it is used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune supporting qualities. The active ingredient in turmeric is the yellow pigment curcumin, which makes up about five per cent of turmeric powder. While the benefits of curcumin have been part of Indian healing for centuries; it is now the focus of western scientific research. I have numerous clients who have benefitted from curcumin often to calm tissue affected by inflammation. Scientists have identified the potent anti-inflammatory capacity of curcumin. An excellent study titled Curcumin: a new paradigm and therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of osteoarthritis. (Henrotin et al, Springerplus 2013) investigated the application of curcumin in osteoarthritis. The study concluded ‘curcumin represents a new paradigm since it is not yet a recommended intervention in osteoarthritis, but should be considered based on its safety and efficacy.’ I speak to people almost daily who get benefit. The study outlines the impact of curcumin on several anti-inflammatory pathways including inhibiting the highly inflammatory enzyme COX-2. This enzyme is the target of most anti-
inflammatory drugs and while effective, these drugs come with a range of often serious side effects. I use a standardised extract of 95% curcumin extract and have created a proprietary blend to improve curcumin absorption into damaged joints and tissue. The normal dose of two capsules daily gives 1000mg of this high potency extract. This is equivalent to about a tablespoon of raw turmeric. This is especially effective when combined with high potency grape seed extract. I use curcumin mostly for joint support, digestive support and wherever tissue is affected by inflammation. Feel free to contact me for advice. I offer a complimentary programme for joint health support, for those with osteoarthritis and other joint problems. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Avocados bound for China Following an audit in January by Chinese officials, the specialist avocado service provider, Just Avocados Ltd, was given the green light to explore the new market. Just Avocados general manager for operations and grower services, Jarrod Redwood, says the auditing was a challenging process and he is proud of the team’s success. “We had the professionalism and capability to take on this challenge, and the team demonstrated that with the immense amount of time and energy they put into ensuring every detail of the packhouse and our systems met the China specifications.” Redwood says that although the rigours of the audit had been accomplished, the effort must continue. “It’s a big tick having our packing and exporting signed off for China, but this is just the beginning, we also need to ensure our growers are up to speed with compliance changes for this market, something our grower services team will continue to work on in the lead-up to the new season.” An industry trial shipment was sent to China in February. Just Avocados will begin shipping commercial volumes in the coming season — August/September — and will be represented in the market by parent brand Darling Group. Darling Group GM sales and marketing, Jacob Darling, says there
is work to be done in the market, but following a successful citrus programme into Shanghai last year, he is aware of what is required to establish the category. “Learnings from our 2017 citrus programme will be used to optimise our New Zealand avocado programme in the coming season. “Adding avocado to our established fresh produce export programme to China is a great benefit for us and our growers — our partners in China are excited about the fruit from New Zealand,” says Darling. Demand in China for avocados continues to grow with 20,000 tonnes imported in 2017 versus 31 tonnes in 2011. Just Avocados and Darling Group are now focussed on working with their inmarket partners to understand the best way to position New Zealand avocados with consumers. Darling says that establishing a point of difference and a premium for New Zealand avocados in the China market is a priority for Darling Group. “We have a number of great stories to tell about New Zealand avocados, the unique health benefits being the strongest to leverage in this market.”

Building is essentially a task that begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home are vital. But foundations also need to be revisited, as in the case of some rural buildings that may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised H5 pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often, different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving, or may be continuing to move — this all depends on the cause. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. To establish if there’s a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house

inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job and different repilers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access under the house and some lift the entire house on jacks to
make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit, so it pays to make plans in advance.

Design for the colder times Autumn is unfolding, soon to give way to winter and a reminder that a warm, energy efficient home gets plenty of sun and is sheltered from prevailing winds — so the choice of site is a key decision. Find out how much sun a site gets at different times of the year, by using an app like Sun Seeker on your smartphone or tablet — good advice from EnergywiseNZ. On clear winter days, the sun sends around 500 watts of heat through each square metre of unshaded north-facing window. A home designed to harness the sun’s free warmth is placed on the sunniest part of the section to access the most sun into the main living areas, with service areas on the south side. Trap in the free heat from the sun using thermal mass like a concrete floor, exposed to the sun, so it soaks up heat during the day and releases it when temperatures drop at night. Select appropriately sized and positioned windows: moderately large on the north-facing side of the house, smaller on the east and west sides, and smallest on the south side. Think about how much space you need on a day-to-day basis. Smaller houses are cheaper to build, easier
to heat and use a lot less energy. The more complex a home’s shape is, the more floor, wall and ceiling area it has to lose heat through. Simple house designs — for example, compact rectangular shapes and multilevel homes — have less external surface area, so are easier and cheaper to keep warm. Good design, materials and construction will enable your home to retain heat for your comfort and lower heating bills. The important factors are: high levels of insulation in ceiling, walls and underfloor, well in excess of minimum building code requirements. Good design will cut your home’s heating needs, but it still pays to make the heating system is as energy efficient as possible. There are lots of log burners, pellet fires, heat pumps and flued gas heaters on the market, either as central heating systems or as individual heaters to heat areas of your house.

Council approval a vital component You have the plans, you have the section, and the money is coming from the bank, but does your work have the all important sign-off from the local authority? Before the first timber is sawn, the first yard of concrete laid, there is the matter of a building consent. The first stop is your local council to obtain the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority (BCA) that certain works meet the requirements of the Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. Consent is required for most work including of course, new buildings, but also covers a wider range of construction including: • swimming pools, spa pools and fencing,·retaining walls over 1.5
metres (no surcharge) • retaining walls any height incurring a surcharge • decks over 1.5 metres high • pergolas attached to buildings • free-standing non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres • plumbing and drainage work • demolition • relocation of buildings • additions, alterations to existing buildings There is actually an extensive list and best to check thoroughly before

The best pastures to create the best production may vary from region to region and there is no argument that regional experience translates into feed, that provides quality and quantity for feeding livestock. New Zealand meat customers today expect a high standard and are usually, of course, buying to end-customer requirements of carcase weights, quality and also shipment timing. Per animal performance targets have become more important and thus pasture quality has become a critical factor, when it comes to producing quality animals for the all-important export market. So the answer literally ‘lies in the soil’ and the feed it produces, so the farmer can look forward to top animal growth rates. Findings from New Zealand and international research have been refined by Beef and Lamb New Zealand, who also offer in-depth pasture advice on their website. Here, farmers can find a simple method of assessing pasture quality in the field for every day use onfarm, and in instructing contractors on
their vision. Visual assessments of dead matter, legume content, grass leaf and grass stem are turned into quantitative estimates of nutritive value by the computer package Q-Graze, which adds the effects of grazing to estimate the growth of young animals on that pasture. Measuring the nutritive value of a pasture can be done by direct laboratory assessment or by indirect visual assessment. Laboratory measurements include metabolisable energy (ME), digestibility, fibre and protein. How much do animals eat and why? What drives potential intake? The potential feed intake of animals is determined by physiological
state (e.g. pregnancy, lactation, sex) and genetics. The animals’ health and the feed offered determine whether the potential is reached. Intake is influenced by the amount of pasture offered to the animal, commonly estimated as pasture cover, pre — and post-grazing dry matter yield or height The more that is offered, the more that can potentially be eaten, up to a maximum where increased pasture dry matter yield has no more influence on intake and liveweight gain. This has to be balanced by the need to keep pasture quality high, ensure good regrowth and maintain economic stocking rates.

Invest in pasture Investing in pasture renewal will improve the production and performance of your land and livestock. When it comes to sowing new pasture there are a number of key steps to consider including: sowing date, seedbed quality, sowing depth and seed ground coverage. The sowing date affects pasture establishment, yield and persistence. Later sowing in cooler autumn conditions means slower establishment due to the cooler temperatures, and greater potential to pug and damage new pastures in winter and spring. Sowing early in the dry autumns, after February 25, in dry conditions with treated seed is easier for contractors, means faster establishment and more yield, and sets up better pasture persistence. When establishing a new pasture the process doesn’t stop at sowing the seed and DairyNZ advise that good management gets the best results out of a new pasture and will help it persist. A pasture should not be considered successfully established until there is a dense, well tillered pasture that has survived a summer. Management through this time has a major impact on its future performance. Before a new pasture is ready for its first grazing, it needs to pass the ‘pluck test’ to see if plants are firmly rooted, so animals won’t pull them out of the ground. How to do this can be found on the DairyNZ website.
The first grazing is about removing the tips of plants to encourage their growth, not about feeding animals. Pastures growth is slow until they are nipped off, This accelerates both the growth rate and tillering. It is best to ensure the first graze is in dry conditions to avoid soil and plant damage. Let stock graze the top 3-4 cm off the plants — do not bare the pasture out. If possible graze with lighter young stock — cows can be used, but take care as they may only need an hour or two in the paddock. In good conditions, the first grazing can be 6-8 weeks after sowing a perennial ryegrass (typically 1-2 weeks sooner for an annual, Italian or hybrid) but dry or cold conditions can prolong this. Apply fertiliser as required — new pasture responds well to nitrogen, and over the first six months, generally two small applications are used for example 25-30 kg N/ha, when conditions allow — not water logged and soil temperature greater than 7°C. It is important to monitor new pastures closely for emerging weeds. The specific weeds present determine your herbicide choice. If necessary seek advice from your local rural retailer, seed company, consultant or to identify weeds online visit agpest.co.nz or weeds. massey.ac.nz.

There is soil science to understand Soil fertility is vital for optimal plant growth and therefore the best pasture nutrition for stock, but then that simple formula — good soil, good growth, good animals, is actually quite complex. In fact, there are 16 nutrients required by plants for optimum growth and animal wellbeing. Thirteen of these nutrients are obtained from the soil. There are five nutrients N, P, K, S and Mg added to soils in fertilisers, while the balance is found freely in most areas of the country. It ultimately comes down to costs to the milk and meat producer. Capital fertiliser inputs can be much greater than the maintenance input, especially if a rapid increase in the soil nutrient status is required. It is important to measure the current soil nutrient status to assess whether a farm is in the maintenance

or development stage. Soil testing, and taking into account fertiliser history, is the only way to assess nutrient status. A robust soil fertility monitoring programme is the best way to monitor nutrients in topsoil of any farm. Fertiliser costs are a major investment and needs to be monitored. Even in the maintenance stage, more precise rates can be calculated from establishing trends in soil levels over time through the use of annual testing. Pasture testing is a required backup to soil testing, as analysis should be used

to assess how much nutrient has been taken up from a fertiliser application and to check trace element status. There are two key reasons to test and analyse pasture samples and the first of these are concerns about animal health and insufficient concentrations of Mg, Na, Cu, Co and Se, with excessively high concentrations of K, Mo and Mn. The second is clover nutrition, with clovers having a higher requirement of all nutrients compared to grasses. They are a sensitive indicator of underlying soil fertility.

Progressing against TB
EADON HIGHLAND FOLD
New Zealand’s TBfree programme is demonstrating progress with the reduction of testing requirements for cattle and deer herds in a few areas of the North Island from March 1, 2018. The TBfree programme manages cattle and deer TB testing through Disease Control Areas (DCAs) throughout New Zealand that focus on areas of varying risk of livestock TB infection from the main wildlife vector of disease, possums. Michelle Edge, chief executive of OSPRI, which manages the TBfree programme, says that as TB management in each area proves successful, disease control areas are reviewed based on detailed scientific analysis and data modelling. “Accordingly, where TB eradication targets have been met, testing requirements are reduced. The progress of the TBfree programme is a credit to farmers, the industry and government organisations that invest in the TBfree programme and in the ultimate goal of making New Zealand TB-free.” TBfree’s strategy combines targeted possum control, TB testing and stock movement controls to help control the spread of bovine TB beyond these boundaries. DCA changes show the progress of TB control towards the ultimate eradication of bovine tuberculosis from New Zealand’s cattle and deer herds. So far OSPRI’s TBfree programme has eradicated TB from 1.83 million hectares — with 7.9 million hectares of Vector Risk Area left to be eradicated. Each year, DCA boundaries and the TB testing regime within them, are assessed and adjusted according to progress in the TBfree programme. From March 1, reductions to DCAs

DAIRY/COMPLIANCE
Handling effluent is key Effluent can be a major issue in the dairying compliance states and some suitable options are outlined in the Regional Water and Soil Plan for Northland for land application systems suited to the region, under the auspices of the regional council. Effluent is a major contaminant, which can cause degradation of our streams, harbours and estuaries. Investment by Northland farmers is improving the status of our waterways. When planning a land application system, it is important to understand the factors that influence the type of system that is best suited to a particular farm and an understanding of soil types is vital to ensure sufficient storage is available. Good management of effluent can help to protect the environment now, and in the future. The Regional Water and Soil Plan details the transition from
discharge to land management effluent systems that has wide benefits to the farm’s bottom line. Among these, are a reduction in fertiliser bills by controlling when and where to irrigate valuable nutrients. The plan states that ‘The variances throughout the region, including extreme weather events and challenging topography, means that each farming system is unique.’ ‘Land is one of a farmer’s greatest assets, and managing it productively and sustainably will add further value to the farm. Part of future-proofing New Zealand’s unique landscape and

waterways will help ensure we can continue to farm in a productive and sustainable way.’ The Sustainable Dairying Water Accord outlines good management practices. It positions the sector to cope with a future that will focus on managing water within limits, recognising that expectations of performance will evolve over time. Most Northland dairy farmers take pride in keeping their waterways healthy and want to protect this valuable resource. Storage facility volumes can be estimated using two storage calculators, the Northland Regional Council Effluent Storage Calculator or the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator;
both are accepted, but it is important to have an understanding of council expectations when using the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator. At the dairy shed the easiest way to estimate water use is to install a water meter, now a requirement under the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord. The type of irrigators suited to Northland vary — dairy effluent, is known as a valuable resource that can increase pasture production and reduce fertiliser costs. It contains organic matter, nutrients including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and also bacteria (such as faecal coliforms, E coli and campylobacter).

Understanding employment obligations
DAIRY FARMERS We can solve all your milk cooling and pre cooling with safe and energy efficient solutions
Employing staff is key to any farming operation and having the right people can help grow and support your business. Implementing the correct employment processes and meeting your compliance obligations is important. DairyNZ have information, along with supporting tools and resources, to help build your knowledge and confidence in all areas of employment compliance. In all employment agreements, the employer is legally responsible for the health, safety and welfare of employees. They are also responsible for managing the employment relationship and having all legally required documentation in place. There are differences in how the various employment types are managed and it pays to ensure you are aware of these situations. These include full-time, part-time and casual workers, fixed term contracts and contractors. Key documents are required for employees and some of these are legally required, and although some are not required, they are best practice on a well-run farm. Get information on how to get ready to employ a new worker, what to do when you have found the right employee for your farm, ongoing employee documentation, changing an existing employee’s role on farm and how to be ready for an employee to leave. Information on salary and minimum wages is also available: remember employees add tremendous value to your business, so ensuring they are remunerated fairly for their level of responsibility is important. Understanding wages and time records, holiday and leave records — time sheet information and payslip/payroll forms along with holiday and leave request forms is also advisable. Improved Milk quality through Snap Chilling = potentially a higher return adding PROFITS to the farm. For 30yrs Eurotec has been supplying the NZ Refrigeration Industry with leading Global Brands. The only NZ supplier of this technology providing nationwide coverage and After Sales Support with branches in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with over 30 Approved Refrigeration Installers throughout the country from Invercargill to Whangarei. Check out the DCS website www.dairycoolingsolutions.nz or talk to your refrigeration contractor.
Energy Saving with Packo Ice Builders (PIB’s) – thanks to the ice energy store build-up during night time hours, a smaller refrigeration unit can be installed, plus the potential savings of off-peak power rates.
Water Saving with PIB’s – bore water pre-cooling is not necessary with the correctly sized PIB. This is ideal for drought prone regions or where water supplies are restricted.

Keeping cool is a hot issue by Andy Bryenton
New regulations in the dairy industry will see a mandatory overhaul of the region’s milk chiller systems in the coming months and a common topic of talk at the recent field days. With new regulations on the way demanding milk is chilled faster, and electricity prices prompting a desire for greater efficiency, it could be time to look at a combination of technologies to tackle this vital task. Some utilise advances in heat exchanger and refrigeration engineering, while others are low-tech solutions, which could render high gains. However, all options are on the table as new regulations coming into effect on June 1, At this point, a temperature of ten degrees Celsius must be reached within four hours of the commencement of milking, dropping to 6 degrees Celsius within six hours of commencement.
Stored milk must remain in the zone above freezing but at or below 6 degrees Celsius, not rising above 10 degrees Celsius even during subsequent milkings. This may be a tall order for smaller or less efficient chiller units. However, new options such as ice banks and cold water storage units can assist by generating frosty temperatures with cheaper night rate power, using the cool water to more effectively chill milk than water at environmental temperatures. Snap chillers, on the other hand, chill a mixture of water and glycol on demand. The backbone of any good refrigeration system remains largely the same, however, from those you’d find in the

back of your chest freezer. Like the chilling units found in air conditioners and fridges, technology has improved the efficiency of chillers in recent years, so an upgrade now may be best in the long run, rather than extending the life of less efficient existing models. One simple energy saving possibility is still only used by around one-in-five kiwi farms. That’s the option to thermally wrap the milk storage tank itself,
creating a thermos flask-like effect. As milk chiller power use accounts for roughly a third of the electric bill on dairy farms, this is an increasingly popular step for those with applicable chiller setups. A handy calculator tool has been devised by DairyNZ - check it out here and see if this is a good idea for your farm. eecabusiness.govt.nz/tools/milk-vatinsulation-savings-calculator/.

Mycoplasma Response funding The government has announced funding into the Mycoplasma bovis (M bovis) Response to continue its efforts to trace and contain the disease. These funds will cover costs up to the point when a decision is made on the feasibility and economic viability of eradicating M bovis. It is anticipated the funding will be made up of $60 million for compensation liability and $35 million for operational costs. In principle, DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association have agreed to contribute NZ$11.2 million towards the operational costs. “M bovis is a significant concern for many farmers, none more so than those directly affected by it,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor. “The M bovis Response is on a scale well beyond any livestock disease responses to date, with the exception of the ongoing investment in Bovine TB. M bovis is an industry productivity issue rather than a trade risk, the government sought industry financial support for the response. “B+LNZ consulted with sheep and beef farmers about joining the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response. The responses showed 85 per cent support for joining GIA, and we are in the process of finalising our application to join so that the sector can play a greater role in biosecurity decision-making. “MPI is currently leading the response and decision-making. Given the widespread concern among beef farmers about the disease and its potential impacts, farmers provided feedback that the beef industry (B+LNZ) needs to have a direct role in decisionmaking about where the response will head, including having access to the full range of information about the cost
and feasibility of eradication, and the projected impacts on the cattle sector.” B+LNZ has agreed in principle to step into a decision-making role and that the beef industry should make a contribution to the M bovis response. “What a contribution from the beef industry would look like is still to be worked out in detail. Our expectation is that it will be based on GIA principles around allocation of costs (such as the impact of M bovis on the beef industry relative to other affected sectors) and a full role for industry in response governance. “We have not made this decision lightly and acknowledge some farmers may be disappointed about making a contribution. Working jointly with DairyNZ, DCANZ, and MIA we have set some conditions around making a contribution, with the key ones being: • Joint decision-making rights and with that full disclosure of information; • Beef farmers making a fair-share contribution through a Biosecurity Act levy; • Government working with industry to urgently fast-track improvements to our animal traceability systems at a mob level (i.e. eASD) and through enforcement of NAIT. “It’s important to point out the $11.2 million contribution is focussed on this first phase of the response and is without prejudice to future cost-sharing arrangements that may be required depending on next steps.

“We will hold the government to account to ensure the response and funding sought is appropriate. “Current analysis suggests the longterm direct impact on beef production is not likely to be significant, our sector is indirectly affected through impacts on calf rearers and restrictions on stock movements, including relationships with dairy farmers through grazing contracts and bull leasing.” B+LNZ has appointed Paul McCauley as a dedicated resource; collaborating with DairyNZ and MPI and sharing information with farmers.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET
We used to repair things broken. Today we have to make sure things don’t break. Farmers and fishermen have been accused of whinging about the weather. Right or wrong, they now face the weather changing faster than Donald Trump’s mood. Only, the crop still takes the same time to get ready for harvest. Adding insult to injury, contractors and farmers alike, are pushed for perfect delivery in time, on time. While the weather is playing pinball with the best laid plans. So it’s tough already, and gear failure is therefore not an option any longer. ‘Cheap’ maintenance products are likely to cost you a contract or a job. Only industries accepting less downtime than farmers, are probably the military and the aviation industry. No surprises there! Warfare and flying is a rather unforgiving environment when you consider the catastrophic consequences of machine failure. So why not use the same products as for a fighter jet or a NATO frigate? Touring unplugged by Andy Bryenton
Kia managed to shock and surprise everybody last year with the arrival of the speedy, slick and dynamically impressive Stinger, their answer to the best of Europe’s grand tourers. Now they’re back to surprise the world again, with a touring machine of a whole different stripe. Enter the Kia Niro, a combination of some of the hottest trends in modern motoring, and a definite one to watch. When looking at the Niro without context, it’s easy to assume that the Korean automakers simply wanted something small, compact and sports utility shaped to fit into their range between the quirky Soul and the popular Sportage. In an era when even Range Rover has a ‘crossover’ and the Toyota CH-R is the new Corolla, it makes sense. But that’s not what the Niro is all about. Sure, it’s got that nifty ‘fun size’ sports utility shape, the same voluminous cabin with clever cubbies and storage spaces, the same higher driving position and nice safety features. But it’s also a plugin hybrid. With Elon Musk at the door and the mass production of Tesla cars at hand — soon — the addition of a crossover hybrid hits all the zeitgeist buttons. This particular combination of internal combustion and voltage power means that you can drive for 55 kilometres without using a drop of the go-juice,
and even on the open highway you’ll sip a mere 1.4 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s a sum measured in the change under the seat. However, the Niro doesn’t fall into that other trap of frugal hybrids — it’s not boring. In eco mode it may seem a touch leisurely, but hit sport and all 140 horsepower comes out to play. It’s no supercar, but it’s grin-inducing, especially as the electric motor joins in much like an old school turbo used to, kicking in a surge of added fizz. The dual clutch six-speed box keeps it smooth, while the twin power systems do their thing. Arriving here in March, the plug-in Niro will join a pair of full-time hybrids in what is becoming a very interesting Kia range indeed. For those who are more concerned with the cutting edge than the prestige of a label, this is where the smart money sits.

Perfect placement reaps results by Andy Bryenton
As data and information about the most minute details of soil hydration and nutrient loading becomes a standard tool in the farmer’s arsenal, precision placement has become a key factor for fertiliser applicators. From a ‘shotgun’ approach in the distant past, the science of sowing crops has also come a long way, adopting a modern version of an ancient bright idea. The ancient Chinese invented the seed drill, thanks in part to the availability of hollow, strong bamboo tubes. Pushing the seed to the right depth in the soil, they found, made all the difference. Modern seed drills are a far cry from these early origins, boasting precision computer-guided control, massive capacity, and the means to open a furrow, pneumatically apply seed to the right depth at the right spacing, and then close the furrow, sometimes even applying a small dose of nutrients as well. It’s a great all-round system for seeding success, and a top example in the current market is the Gigante, produced by Maschio Gaspardo. This Italian company operate factories not just in their home country — where they were established back in the early 1960s — but also in the vast emerging markets of India and China. Making seed drills to feed the literal millions of these burgeoning economies, means they know how to make them big and make them reliable. The Gigante lives up to its name, but is able to fold up for highway transit. Where it makes its mark is in precision seed depth in adverse conditions, using a cast steel
guide wheel and its own impressive weight along with tungsten carbide scrapers to conquer rocky or wet fields. Combine this with the ability to change seeding depth easily, a massive capacity, and pneumatic power to literally ‘fire’ each seed right on target, and the whole Gigante system improves the chances
of strong and healthy crops by a vast factor over broadcasting methods. As bigger tractors roll out with the capacity to bring bigger implements to the field, machines like Maschio Gaspardo’s Gigante are an example of economies of scale built in
solid steel. It’s a long way from a hollow tube of bamboo, but the concept is the same — a clever idea, well executed, to get more value from each square inch of soil.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
A workhorse from China
by Andy Bryenton
With the rise of side-by-side off-road vehicles as the all-purpose workhorse for farmers in New Zealand, you could be forgiven for thinking that the ‘U’ in UTV stands for ubiquitous. Everywhere you go, you’ll see these tough little vehicles spraying weeds, carrying fencing tools or herding livestock. Now a new contender in the market looks to open up the UTV option for even more farmers, with advantages over the traditional quad bike. CFMoto may be a new name in the field, but they come with a powerful entry into the market in the form of their UForce 550. The product of over 20 years of liquid cooled engine technology from one of the biggest manufacturing companies in China, the UForce range is a distillation of what farmers want from a side-by-side, concentrated into a product, which ticks all the boxes. Ground clearance, the ability to handle deep mud and tough terrain, a reliable, easy to service engine — it’s all here, in a package, which comes with a surprisingly economical price tag. The heart of the UForce 550 is a 498cc four valve, four-stroke liquid cooled engine developing 38 horsepower and 43 newton metres of torque. That’s plenty for most farming tasks, and combined with the low centre of gravity afforded by the placement of the compact engine block it means that the UForce 550 is a stable platform for all kinds of rural chores. Seating for two with a wide and capacious tray in the rear means lots of options — 360 kilos of load capacity with two up. Add in a CVT transmission for smooth power delivery and the ability to switch from two to four wheel drive in the field, and you have a competent working machine ready to handle the hard knocks. What sets it apart from many contenders is the fact that this machine has not been engineered for hunting in the American wilderness or for recreational use on the trails — though it could accomplish either. in one of the world’s largest engineering and manufacturing centres, it’s been tested on the ground in some of the most demanding, isolated conditions of south Asia. Farms there have also seen the benefit of a tough little roll caged working machine with the economy and power balance of a 500cc mill — but of course, they lack the infrastructure of a First World economy like New Zealand and often boast higher temperatures, deeper mud, worse roads and trails — the list goes on. If CFMoto can thrive in these conditions, they can excel on the farms of Northland.
