“That is slightly up on 265 this time last year. In 2019 we responded to 953 call-outs in total, just shy of the 2018 tally of 999, which was our busiest 12 months on record since the service began 30 years ago,” says Northland Rescue Helicopter general manager, Vanessa Furze. “In February, we were called to a beach at Tinopai after a tourist in her mid-30s was stung by a wasp and went into anaphylactic shock. She was flown to Whangarei Hospital in a serious condition.

“We were also thrilled with the results of our 2019 annual appeal, with the Northland community raising an incredible $242,000. We thank you for your generosity and continued support of our life-saving service. With the busy holiday season behind us, we urge you to continue to be careful and look out for one another whether you are on the road, at work or out on the farm. Stay safe and take care. “On April 4, three of our staff, pilots Josh Peacey and Steve Couchman, and engineer Rowan Broadhurst, will compete in the Northpower Wild Kiwi in Whangarei to raise vital funds for the Northland Rescue Helicopter. The Northpower Wild Kiwi is an extraordinary run/walk/multi-sport event through the little slice of paradise at Whangarei Heads. Many farmers enjoy getting out there and being involved in the event. It is a great way to get off-farm and do something different. “During last year’s competition, Northland Rescue Helicopter was involved in winching a competitor off the mountain after they had fallen off the track and required medical assistance. Our three-man team is entering the multi-sport category, which will require them to complete a 10km sea kayak, 25km mountain bike and a 14km run.” To donate, and support the staff on the Northpower Wild Kiwi event visit givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/raise-fundsfor-northland-rescue-helicopter.

Pre-employment health checks are the new standard. In most industries now, pre-employment health checks are the ‘norm’ and potential candidates often expect to attend one as part of securing a new job. Pre-employment health assessments are undertaken for the benefit of both the employer and the employee for the following reasons:

• To establish the overall health of the prospective employee to undertake the work offered. • To ensure that the prospective employee will not be a health hazard to others. • To identify health problems that may require ongoing advice and or management. • To establish baseline data prior to commencing employment. • To screen for drugs that may affect ability to perform a role safely prior to commencing employment. StaffCare is a locally owned business and our staff are all Northlanders. Our main clinic is conveniently located in central Whangarei however our nurses also travel- Kaitaia to Albany. We can also arrange health checks nationwide. So take some of the guesswork and worry out of one of you most important roles as an employer.

Kingfish farming investment The Provincial Growth Fund is investing $6 million in a land-based aquaculture pilot to see whether yellowtail kingfish can be commercially farmed in Northland, says Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones. A recirculating land-based aquaculture system will be built and operated at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) Northland Marine Research Centre at Bream Bay. The system is a prototype to see if it is technically and economically feasible to grow 600 tonnes of yellowtail kingfish to market size on land each year. “If proven, this system will produce high-value aquaculture products with global appeal that are produced sustainably and efficiently. World demand for sustainable products like kingfish is increasing, particularly for the high-end sushi market. Local restaurant suppliers have also shown a demand for kingfish if its supply and quality is consistent,” says Mr Jones. The total cost of the project is $19.8m, with Niwa contributing $7.84m and Northland Regional Council up to $6m in buildings and infrastructure. The PGF is contributing with a $6m loan. Initially, 18 jobs in Northland will be created. If kingfish production is proven viable at 600 tonnes a year, it could lead to a full-scale 3,000-tonne operation in five years, with revenue estimated at $45 million per annum. “Successful expansion will give the private sector the opportunity to invest in larger reticulating aquaculture operations, not only in Northland but nationwide. The knowledge gained through this initiative could contribute to the potential development of other oor -to-d Door y to your r s delive r busines o e ! s m ho 4 day in 2–

land-based aquaculture which would complement the rest of the industry. “Producing fish on land is sustainable, with modern recirculating systems able to recycle the bulk of water it uses. This is the type of innovation the PGF wants to invest in. It is testing technology that could bring major sustainable economic growth not only to Northland but the rest of the country. “Both central and local government suppor ts high-value land-based aquaculture as a key driver of sustainable economic growth. “The project aligns with the government’s aquaculture strategy and its goal of reaching $3 billion in annual aquaculture sales by 2035.” Shane Jones also recently opened the Kaipara Kai Hub in Ruawai. A PGF investment of $980,000 for Kaipara Kai will explore new crop and stock types and aquaculture opportunities for the region. The initiative will promote high-value cropping on the district’s significant fertile whenua assets by utilising existing soil and crop research and environmental bestpractice. It will move farming activities further up the value chain as well as developing capability in the local farming community. “The hub is part of the Kaipara Kickstart package, which the PGF has supported with $20.39m to build or improve infrastructure and open up land resources in the region. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

A LIFETIME WITH DOGS BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Allen Nisbet became involved with sheep dog trials and farming when he was young and moved to the country after living in an institution in Auckland City as a child.

“I

was born in Whangaroa, but my mother died when I was young, and my dad went to war. Upon dad’s return, he worked as a shepherd on a Lands and Survey place at Pouto, and I eventually reacquainted with him,” says Allen. “A couple of local Maori families befriended me, the Te Wakes and Kennas, they used to give me heck as a skinny pakeha. These were some of the best years of my life. They gave me a horse that I couldn’t catch, and when I did, I couldn’t stop it. To teach me to ride they put me on bareback and trekked to the Pouto lighthouse. The horse would slide down the big dunes on its back legs. I figured it knew more than me, so I stuck with it, too scared to fall off.

I had one thing over them though, I was better at rugby and played for Southern, the best rugby team in Northland. “I worked with dad and ended up managing farms and was 42-years at one near Kaikohe working for the managing director of Holeproof, then Neal and Annette Plowman when they purchased the property — they were the best employers in the world. We originally ran 6,000 ewes and 600 breeding cows. We milked 1,800 cows and had the biggest Simmental Stud for six years. I was very lucky to work for the Plowmans from 1984 until 2006. They are true blue New Zealanders and put a lot back into the country. “I got into dog training and trials as a sport around 1967. I enjoy it immensely

Training and breeding working dogs is an interest Allen has had since the late 1960s

Allen Nisbet was recently made a life member of the NZ Dog Trial Association

as it goes hand in hand with your work. They are your best mate, and you spend hours training them, which helps your stockmanship skills so they can control your stock. “There are lots of factors for producing a good dog. You need to be persistent and consistent — it is like playing rugby and golf or having children. You have to put the time, and they have different personalities. Some need to be kidded along while others don’t, but you need to be the alpha dog in the pack. It is about mutual respect and trust. You get more out of them through respect rather than bullying. You become a bit more canine yourself from understanding your dog’s behaviour. It is a deeper subject than people realise — although it is a simple one. Like learning to read a horse’s vibes and how it reacts to different things you learn to think from the dog’s angle.” Allen has recorded every dog he has bred and trained since he first began.

“Breeding and training dogs is something I enjoy. I don’t put dogs in a sale because animal welfare is my priority and I need to know the home it is going. “The average person can train a dog basically in around 25 hours. You need to be able to control your dog, and I do off and on stock training to keep the natural balance. You ask them to do something, not demand them.” Allen suggests three short lessons each day. “Like a foreign language, a 20-minute lesson is better than all-day tuition. Finish with putting your hand on its shoulder and saying ‘good dog’. Don’t let it jump around. If you can feel its warmth through your hand — it can feel your warmth. That creates a bond with you rather than working through fear. “I feed my working dogs at night time, not the morning or they get lethargic with a balanced protein and fat diet,

Allen regards animal welfare as a top priority for working dogs and ensures those he breeds go to the best homes possible

there are many good products available. I mainly use Tux Energy along with other feeds to give variation. “You need the right food for what your dog is doing, like a human running a marathon, dogs are athletes and need the right input. “I love dog trial competing and testing myself against my peers. I don’t go to place second, I go to win but don’t mind

shouting another winner a beer, that is what it is all about. If you get 20th with a young dog, but you did well, you can be happy. “I am coming up 83 years old and was recently granted a life membership to the NZ Dog Trial Association. I was very humbled as there are many deserving people out there. It is the first time in my life I have been speechless.”

I kept riding but was known more for singing in the USA and was performing at a music festival when I met the Topp Twins, Jools and Lynda. We started talking and discovered we shared a love of horses. We became fast mates, and our relationship

grew, and that is how I initially visited New Zealand.” Teresa stayed with Jools while she was hosting a horse clinic on her first visit. “She told the trainer I worked with horses. One horse was very difficult, and the trainer asked me what I would do. I ended up working with it and teaching lessons for three days and loved it here. Jools and Lynda often came and visited me when they were in the States. “Michaela is a rider and nationally recognised in dressage. She came to America to train with a dressage trainer, and we connected through friends for work. I have ridden with and learnt from many fine horsemen and women. I had

a really cushy job on a ranch with full undercover training facilities, but the owner made some bad decisions and went under after 12 years. Jools and Lynda came and supported us at that time too. “Approximately seven years ago Michaela had an accident, so we returned to Hawke’s Bay to be near her family. It has been really difficult for her, but she is doing amazingly well and is doing great with poetry and art. “I love New Zealand, all I miss is my Dodge Ram, you could tow your house with that thing. I travel to clients between Auckland and Hawke’s Bay and focus on establishing a secure partnership with horses and their owners — regardless of discipline. “I came from having the best facilities to happily working in muddy paddocks and driving an old truck until recently. I trained with a famous horseman Buck Brannaman. “He is the man that the author of The Horse Whisperer watched and got the story idea from. I was involved in dressage and one day in the 80s decided this is it, I am going to dedicate myself to helping horses, not sing so much as horses are my passion. I am a problem solver, a behaviourist and help people who are having problems with their horses, or horses who are having problems with their people —

which is often the case. It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork. There is a lot of communication between horses that is not natural to people. They have a real sense of order. It is about movement. “If a new horse goes into a new paddock, you will see one horse will make an ugly face and herd the newcomer around. That is, so the new horse knows who yields their feet to who, because if danger comes they need to know what order to run as a herd for safety. “If a horse bites and kicks, based on horse language, it is often trying to get the other horse or person to move and yield their feet, so you know to follow them or they, you. “People often back up from their horse. That is sending a mixed message, and the horse thinks ‘OK, you will follow me’. “They are not necessarily dominating — they are establishing an order of who moves first, particularly in case of danger. “Often backing a horse is enough to get a change in behaviour as they then know whose space is whose. “Once people learn how to communicate to horses through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. When people learn to make the horse Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

An inspiring life — a lasting legacy

by Lockwood Smith

A funeral for a friend brings back memories. Saying goodbye to Mike Moore did just that. One was 1999 and the Battle for Seattle. As New Zealand’s International Trade Minister, I was escorted through the tear gas, weaving our way around the barricades. It was a full ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and protesters had gathered in their thousands. At the helm was new WTO Director General, the Rt Hon Mike Moore. He had just achieved the most important international role of any New Zealander in my lifetime. We were trying to launch a new trade round and Mike had me chairing one of the four working groups. We failed. Not Mike’s fault, but the Battle for Seattle, as it became known, was quite an event — subsequently made into a movie that typically bore little relationship to what really went on. The massive protests outside reflected one side of humanity — the events inside, another. In the final two days of negotiations we worked nonstop for 48 hours in what’s known as the Green Room, trying to negotiate a positive outcome. I’ve never forgotten how unhelpful the EU was, or India for that matter, and how much I missed another constructive voice such as the UK could offer. But its voice, of course, was buried under the EU.

Union leader, Ken Douglas, part of our delegation, became so worried about my well-being, that every time I emerged from the Green Room to update our team on progress, he’d bring me a fresh coffee. His thoughtfulness to someone from the opposite side of politics will stay with me forever. Their humanity sets good leaders apart. Ken Douglas had it and Mike Moore had it in spades. His was a life devoted to finding the forgotten, to empowering the underprivileged — he did it not just in New Zealand but globally. The work of the WTO has raised more millions of people out of poverty than any other organisation in human history and Mike Moore is part of that legacy. A kid from a working-class background, he grew up in Northland. His first job was in the meat works at Moerewa, but a crucial time spent at Dilworth School in Auckland had engendered in him a love of books. His reading broadened his mind and underpinned his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to global leadership. While a Labour man through and through, it was the National government under Jenny Shipley that nominated Mike for the WTO role. As Trade Minister, I was pleased to support it, but became

Sir Lockwood Smith

more deeply involved when he needed to get the United States finally onside. He’d run a typical Mike Moore campaign, living out of a shoebox in Geneva, the home of the WTO, doing the

real hard yards. He’d captured a good proportion of the member countries to his cause, but needed the US — still a smidgen prickly over what they saw as the nuclear ships debacle.

Towards the end of Mike’s WTO campaign, the US Trade Ambassador called me to talk about it. I backed Mike strongly. Whether it helped, I don’t know, but Mike finally got US support and the job. While we failed in Seattle, Mike succeeded in Doha with the new Development Round launched in 2001. He also successfully brought China into the WTO. I’d been a bit involved as the first Trade Minister in the world to sign China up to the WTO. Interestingly, for two politicians from the opposite sides of the political spectrum, we’d become great friends. When I was Speaker, Mike, then Ambassador to the United States, got me up to Washington for a couple of days to work with him around the Congress on trade issues. Mike was never boring. He had a unique way with thoughts and words, and while he made absolute sense to us Kiwis, you’d occasionally see a cloud of confusion cross the face of some Member of Congress. Translation was sometimes required. Life was not a rehearsal for Mike. He lived it to the full. My head was never so sore as following evenings spent with Mike and Yvonne in Geneva or Washington. Their hospitality was

legendary and solving the world’s problems invariably required more than one bottle of red. Much has recently been written about Mike’s contribution. But I think a bit has been missed, perhaps the most important of all. And it’s this. Over the past 30 years New Zealand built a unique global trade strategy. It involved not just working with our nearest neighbours on bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), but doing things regionally as well, such as with South East Asia via ASEAN, and more recently, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) — all the while promoting progress at the WTO. But New Zealand also learnt the hard way that at times you need to move unilaterally — removing barriers to trade within our own system, as protectionism had been shown by the early 1980s to be so damaging to our own economy. I don’t think that smart global trade strategy, so crucial in helping raise New Zealand from near bankruptcy in the early 80s to number one in the world on the Global Prosperity Index in 2016, would have lasted through successive changes of government had Mike Moore not laid the foundations for a bipartisan approach to trade liberalisation here in New Zealand when he was himself Trade Minister in the 1980s. In my experience, few other countries in the world have seen the left and right of politics so consistently aligned in this critically important policy area. Traditionally, the political left has been

The late Mike Moore

less enamoured with trade liberalisation — fearing for local jobs. But Mike’s incisive mind saw it differently, as ultimately creating more jobs. He was able to convince enough of his colleagues of his vision for a better place for all. We owe it to Mike to continue his legacy of cross-party support for trade.

Time the great healer (Part one)

I recently spoke with a client who I first helped more than two years ago. He is an ex-farmer who was having real trouble with osteoarthritis in his knees. Realistically surgery was his only option. My role as a nutritional medicine practitioner is to identify the dietary and supplement options that can help. There are many factors that can cause osteoarthritis (OA). Genetics, injury, occupation and nutrition all play a part. Direct injury to joints can set off a faulty biochemical chain that finishes with the destruction of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes resulting in cartilage loss. Interestingly the same basic defective biochemistry is also triggered by nutritional factors. A deficiency in antioxidants, especially those made by the trace minerals selenium, zinc, copper and manganese leave chondrocytes exposed to oxidative stress, a technical term to describe free radical damage. The end result is always the same. Chondrocytes are damaged or die, meaning cartilage cannot be repaired. Eventually, cartilage thins often replaced by bony spurs as our bone survival mechanism kicks in. The body then tries to heal the problem

with inflammation — which makes it worse. Two years ago, I created a personalised nutritional support programme for my client. It included a dietary recommendation to support cartilage and to reduce inflammation. We added supplements initially at higher doses. That included my OA support supplement, which is a little different to most. While it includes glucosamine, the real hero is the 800–1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin sulphate supported by meaningful amounts of curcumin from turmeric and fish oils to reduce inflammation. This week I emailed him to ask how he was doing. His response was that he thinks he has delayed future surgery by 10 years. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

Funding irrigation and water storage in Northland through the Provincial Growth Fund, otherwise known as the Shane Jones election fund, is nothing more than a cynical grab at votes by a minister who never lets an opportunity, or a headline, go by. Even worse, the self-professed ‘prince of the provinces’ is presenting nothing new. He is simply reverting to and reinstating a programme National had in place years ago through Crown Irrigation Investments. Then the present government axed it in 2018. Only to have to reinstate it two years later when the weather and the manifest failure of Shane Jones’s election fund became too hot for a struggling government to handle. The fact remains that we are paying dearly for the two-year gap in funding. It is a bit rich for Mr Jones to take credit for a National initiative that was both far-sighted and working perfectly well. Crown Irrigation Investments had the institutional knowledge and experience to continue its work. National has a strong record of working with farmers, growers, and councils on water storage and irrigation schemes. It understands the importance of co-investing these schemes, which are an important part of climate change mitigation and food security. All the more important, National understands the provinces. Even the

present dilemma of drought conditions in much of the country is testimony to that. It may be the worst drought in years and, in some places, recorded history. However, it was inevitable that it would happen sometime, and National prepared for that through its Crown Investments Irrigation funding. It was a costly mistake for this government to axe it when it did and whilst what Mr Jones is doing now is laudable, and personally for him timely, it is not his to take credit for, and may even be seen as too little too late.

Just Avocados ‘Pool 1’ results Avocado packer and exporter, Just Avocados has finalised its ‘Early season pool’ for the 2019–20 export season resulting in a healthy return to their supplying growers reflecting their harvest strategies. “Price stability across sizes has been primarily driven by great progress in Asia. Specifically, Korea taking the majority of the early large fruit, with Thailand and Taiwan having a significant impact in some of our middle and smaller sizes,” says sales and marketing general manager Jacob Darling. He said a combination of good customer channels and marketing activity helped contribute to 45% of Just Avocados’ export volume being consumed across Asia. “We put together a range of innovations for Asia from packaging to providing a channel for buyers and consumers to instantly access our story and information about avocados using their smartphones. These aspects have greatly contributed to our point of difference in the marketplace.” Fruit quality was also improved from the 2018–19 season. “The combination of better growing conditions and a focussed approach to orchard management and supply chain efficiency in marketing goes a long way to improving some of our historic challenges.” Just Avocados’ focus for communicating returns has been on the concept of ‘total orchard gate return’. “As an industry, we can’t continue to believe that export per tray orchard gate return is the only element that contributes to probability.” Just Avocados has reviewed

their payment reporting to also show grower returns in dollars a hectare. “We look forward to sitting down with each grower and going through the new payment report, which will assist in understanding what impacts your return and how our model puts growers in the best possible position for orchard probability. “While we are an export-based business, we recognise the importance of addressing all events that contribute to grower profit per hectare such as scale, consistency, pack out, the application of best practice in genetics, pruning, nutrition and harvest strategy. “Our early harvest strategy has allowed us to get a significant number of our early growers’ fruit off, which has contributed to high pack-outs and will assist in increasing consistency of return crop year on year.” Returns from the local market are also an important contributor to total orchard gate return. “The strategic alignment between Just Avocados and domestic marketer Zeafruit has a positive outcome for growers as we have utilised the strengths of each business to maximise results. “With an integrated model from growing, packing, distribution and marketing Just Avocados has led the way in offering a full package for growers from class three returns to export returns.”

New pathway to farm work Budding farm workers will no longer have to leave Northland for training after the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society set up a Farm Internship Programme for up to a dozen young people to live on farms while they gain their qualifications towards the New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture. Society farm intern steering committee member Sam Moscrip says the new programme is an opportunity for young people who are considering careers in the dairy, sheep and beef industries. The internship programme is a twoyear, full-time course where trainees will work four days on-farm and attend training courses one day a week at Barge Showground Events Centre in Whangarei and other venues. Candidates should ideally be between 18 and 24, have a restricted driving licence, and be a New Zealand resident. “We’ve put in a lot of effort to find a cluster of farmers who are quality operators and who will provide extra time for training,” he said. “It is not about cheap labour. The farmers have all been vetted, and we’ve made sure the accommodation provided is good quality as well.” Moscrip says the internship will fill a gap in on-the-job training and the emphasis is on providing quality training and good pastoral care. Board and lodging costs on the farms will be kept low, and interns can apply for StudyLink funding. All of the farms chosen are within two hours of Whangarei. The intern will be

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

When the rains do arrive Good grazing management is about maximising the pasture you grow and utilise, balanced with allowing pastures to recover following a dry summer. Dairy NZ advice is to start thinking about pasture renewal early so paddocks can be properly prepared. Assessing cows’ body condition score (BCS) in mid-February to mid-March determines if actions are required and help plan for autumn. A number of strategies will allow you to achieve BCS targets at calving. With the drought still to break in the north, how much rain do we need to turn the corner?

After a long, dry period — significant rain is required. Fifty millimetres-plus is sufficient to return soil moisture deficits to within 15% of field capacity. It is better to apply nitrogen sooner rather than later and after 20–25mm of rain or more is the time to go into action. Available pasture can also halve after rain causing cows to be underfed — up to 50 per cent of the pasture available before rain is lost as it quickly decays. To avoid underfeeding; it may be

important to have supplement available. As the amount required after rain will at least double in the first 7–10 days, reducing as pasture cover improves. After autumn rain and very rapid pasture growth, there is the opportunity to increase pasture cover by keeping on a slow rotation. Do not speed up the rotation to fully feed the herd as this will not allow pasture covers to increase. Use of fertiliser N can result in pasture responses of up to 12kg DM/ kg N. Autumn nitrogen responses vary

considerably. The only certainty to applying N fertiliser after the autumn rains is the grass will be greener. After a severe drought, nitrogen applications can be delayed for two weeks after it has rained. As the soil has good reserves of mineralised nitrogen and pastures take time to recover. The response period to autumn applied N fertiliser is for three months. It has to be considered when making the final drying off decision; ie, the response of 12kg DM/kg N does not occur for a two to three-week period.

Nitrate levels can be a concern Autumn pasture needs careful consideration with the fact that nitrate poisoning is a factor to be considered in feed crops at this time of year. Expert advice from Beef + Lamb NZ is to feed stock before running them on to at-risk crops or feeds and ensure stock have access to supplement such as hay or silage. Also, allow an adjustment period for all feed crops — this is critical with cattle on fodder beet. Nitrate poisoning can occur when the plant uptakes more nitrogen from the soil than is able to be utilised. James White, Commercial Extension Manager for Seed Force, says this can affect many species but most notably forage brassicas, short-term ryegrasses and oats. He says grazing strategies such as not running hungry stock on to at-risk crops or pastures and reducing their intake by providing a supplement such as hay or silage (or a feed with low nitrate levels), will help minimise the risk. Allow time for livestock to adjust to feed crops by gradually increasing the allocation over time. During high-risk periods, feed the pasture or crop in the afternoon as nitrate levels will typically be lower, particularly on sunny days says James. Nitrate test kits are available, so farmers can test their own crops, or samples sent away from analysis. Levels exceeding two per cent of dry matter are considered unsafe. All stock can be affected by nitrate poisoning,

but cattle and younger stock are most susceptible. James says nitrate poisoning can happen very quickly. So he urges farmers to check stock often during high-risk periods and animals showing any sign of illness should be removed immediately. Acidosis is another risk factor when feeding forage brassicas. However, it can also be minimised by introducing stock to the crop slowly, ensuring animals are not going on to the crop hungry and providing access to supplementary feed. James says brassicas also contain anti-nutritional compounds (SMCO and Glucosinolates). Still, these can be

managed through a slow transition and adequate supplementation. Bloat can also be an issue if feeding frosted brassica crops. Careful transitioning is essential when feeding fodder beet crops, particularly to cattle. The feed should be introduced to the animal slowly, and the feed allocation gradually increased. That allows the animal’s rumen to adjust to a new type of feed.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Research has shown that on wellmanaged farms there can be an increase in annual production of 20% or two to three tonnes of dry matter a hectare for each year. Of course, that is a benefit in better nutrition and thus improved animal production. A pasture renovation programme where 10% of the farm is renovated each year still means that some pasture will be 10 years old and not in its prime. Sowing too late in autumn runs the risk of poor establishment because of decreasing soil temperature. This effect is greatest on species such as tall fescue, chicory, red clover and lucerne. A useful guide is to use a soil temperature of 10C as the minimum required for germination and establishment. Even though ryegrasses are more tolerant of cooler temperatures the dry matter production in spring from autumn-sown pasture is about 200kg DM/ha less for each week later than February the pasture is sown. Pasture is often sown too late in autumn to complete tasks such as drying off cows. Yet provided soil moisture is available, the last week of January and the first week of February is a good time to sow slower-establishing

species such as tall fescue, red clover, chicory and lucerne. Ryegrass can be sown successfully later in autumn, but as well as achieving less production in the first year, the risk of poor white clover establishment increases greatly after March because of cool soil temperatures. Many farmers will use a contractor to sow their pasture but knowing some principles of soil preparation and sowing

is still useful. The key factors once the time of sowing has been selected are the method of sowing, depth of sowing, species mix and sowing rate, and initial grazing management. The method of sowing can range from broadcasting seed to direct drilling to cultivation. Broadcasting seed is cheap but risky and is not a reliable method to renovate pasture on arable areas.

Building a new home or renovating an existing dwelling is an opportunity to take advantage of a unique opportunity by becoming almost self-sufficient where power is concerned. Before starting on a new build or renovation, good advice is that you should work with architects, designers and builders who understand energyefficient design principles, know how the different components in a house work together and use computer modelling to understand a home’s energy performances before it is built. Not all architects, designers and builders are experienced with this, so it pays to shop around and get references. The New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) says the best building site for a warm, energy-efficient home gets plenty of sun, particularly from the north, and is sheltered from prevailing winds. Bear in mind that the sun is lower in winter. You can easily find out how much sun a site gets at different times of the year by using an app like Sun Seeker on your smartphone or tablet. On clear winter days, the sun sends around 500 watts of heat through each square metre of unshaded north-facing windows. Good design, materials and construction and proper insulation will

enable your home to retain heat for your comfort and lower heating bills. When it comes to heating, be it in the kitchen or elsewhere, the question of power comes in. There is an expanding market for solar power — free electricity from the sun. Using appliances such as a washing machine, dishwasher or vacuum cleaner during the day will increase the amount of solar electricity you use and reduce the amount of electricity that needs to be purchased from a retailer. Solar water heating is also an option. Showering in the morning rather than evening can bring added gains as solar electricity, rather than purchased electricity, is used to heat the water in your cylinder. Consumers with electric vehicles will benefit from charging these during the day when solar panels are in action. In highly insulated and airtight homes, a well-designed and installed heat recovery ventilation system can provide good ventilation and further reduce heat loss. While properly sized and located extractor fans are essential for removing

Good design will cut your home’s heating needs, but it still pays to make the heating system as energy efficient as possible. Evan Laurie has been operating Sound Drainage Services Ltd since 2005 servicing the Kaipara and Whangarei area and everywhere in between. “We specialise in septic systems, commercial and domestic drainage solutions and truck cartage for a variety of needs. From moving machinery including tractors and carting dirt as well as general cartage,” says Evan. “I have been in the industry for more than 15 years helping farmers with dam and drain cleaning, race work and keeping on top of drainage maintenance. We recommend doing these jobs before winter to keep water flowing through the property instead of across it and stormwater management. “I help lifestyle block owners with resurfacing driveways, domestic drainage and culvert installations. Irrigation is really important, and we install it correctly the first time. Don’t try and cut corners by doing it yourself, have the experts come and do it for you. “Sound Drainage Services Ltd also offer new domestic AES septic systems that are a secondary treatment system and fit all council requirements. They work on gravity only, so you don’t need power or pumps for the standard septic tank. We are keeping things simple by going back to the old school principle rather than the high maintenance systems on offer.

“The AES system has been around since 2013 and is wastewater treatment of the highest standard. I highly recommend it for lifestyle properties and farms. “There are no mechanical parts, pumps or blowers, and it is far cheaper than the secondary systems on the market today and no chemical usage. They come with a 20-year warranty and have a low installation cost with no servicing cost and no power use for most standard installations. “If you are on the side of a hill, you have fall, so no pump is needed, which means silent operation and no alarms to sound in the middle of the night. AES has 500,000 plus systems installed worldwide and can be added to an existing septic tank for a lower-cost upgrade. “It is proven to be 10 times better than a New Zealand secondary wastewater treatment system.” The AES on-site domestic wastewater treatment units comply with Australian and New Zealand standards 1546/3 2008. Affordable home insulation Paul Toth is the owner-operator of Heatsavers Northland and specialises in the insulation of exterior walls for existing homes. “Our product is top-quality, nontoxic, no burning, sound dampening, very affordable, easily applied foam insulation,” says Paul. “I have more than 40 years’ building experience and understand the nature and structure of residential housing and the essential need for good-quality insulation. That creates a warmer, drier, healthier, safer and more valuable homes by using heatsmart insulation. “House insulation became law after 1991, so effectively more than 50 per cent of existing kiwi homes have no wall insulation, resulting in mouldy, cold, damp, drafty essentially ‘sick’ dwellings.”

New Zealand has one of the highest child asthma rates in the world, which has been attributed to the lack of insulation in older homes and InsulSmart has been available in New Zealand for more than 30 years, and proven in America and Europe for 50 years. “The water-based, non-toxic and green friendly product is widely accredited, tested and proven by the New Zealand Department of Building and Housing and EECAS, and is accepted by local councils nationwide,” says Paul. “InsulSmart is millions of tiny air cells with the consistency of shaving cream, which is pumped pre-expanded

A high-grade marine filler plugs the holes, which is then sanded, primed and painted to leave the surface as it was before. “When I came across this product four years ago, I was considering how to insulate my 1981 home without ripping off the external weatherboards, or the internal gib walls. The process takes no more than two days, and InsulSmart stays firm and dry, won’t slump or sag. The open cell technology allows the walls to breathe and sheds any exterior water ingression immediately.” An

Earthworks, drainage, landscaping

Richard Leslie of Leslie Drainage Ltd based in Whangarei has been operating for more than 20 years offering landscaping, drainage and earthwork services. Shaun Beuker is his business partner, and Richard’s wife Karyn runs the office. “We offer all aspects of drainage from subdivision work to private domestic households, farms and businesses. We do anything whether farm or box culverts, river crossings, ponds and septic systems,” says Richard. “We are all about helping people with their earthworks, landscaping and drainage needs from Wellsford to Cape Reinga. “We create driveways, rock retaining walls, and have had some amazing results. One recent project included completely landscaping a property. The difference with the before and after photos is mind-blowing. We helped with drainage and design, added new wooden fencing, entrance gates and brand new driveways where there were none. “Our guys levelled out the ground, which was just grass and paddock and added gravel areas around the buildings and transformed the whole property into something amazing. We do so much more than only drainage. “We made a tired area look substantially modern and crafted out the nice big drive and sculptured the wall to create a stunning property entrance. We are passionate about the environment and the work we do. Whether it be residential drainage, commercial drainage, drain unblocking,

Boost farm revenue A simple way to boost dairy farm revenue is often overlooked, and that is by improving stock water quality. Kiwi farmers pay lots of attention to animal nutrition and health, but how many stop to think about the hidden effect of their farm drinking water. “Milk is 87 per cent water, so milk production is closely related to water intake. “For every litre of milk produced a cow needs to drink at least three litres of water, which equates to 150 litres of water/day for high-performers,” says director of trencher manufacturer Terrasaw Industries, Keith Fergusson. “Cattle, especially dairy cows, are sensitive to water palatability and prefer to drink clean, cool, fresh water. Research has shown that the ideal water temperature for cows is between 15C–17C — they really don’t like warm water. “Even with minor water quality problems, milk production can be down by 10–20 per cent. That is serious dollars, so how much are you losing? “Black polythene water pipe exposed to the sun gets extremely hot. In fact, you can use it for a solar hot water system. The problem is, many farms have kilometres of it running along fence lines — on the surface. “Warm water in troughs grows smelly algae and bacteria. Yuk! You wouldn’t drink it, why should your cows have to?” Keith suggests burying pipelines under the turf is a simple, permanent way to keep trough supply water cool

and palatable. It also reduces damage from stock and the sun. The portable TerraTrencher, invented by Keith on a Northland farm, was purpose-designed for quickly burying pipe. Being the world’s most portable trencher, the size of a chainsaw, it can be used freehand near fences and gateways, or wheelmounted for longer runs. It is very handy for undergating electric fence line cable. “Equipped with a state-of-theart powerhead, it is fast and can shorten a two-day job to a couple of hours. “Used widely both in New Zealand and overseas for fibreoptic cables and irrigation lines, it is finding use in dozens of other industries. “Would you believe it is also used for robotic mower control cable, transplanting palm trees, root pruning, cutting foundations, predator-proof fencing, even ice fishing in North America.” “The TT500 model is the most popular choice for agricultural and horticultural use. It digs a 40mm wide trench to a depth of Keith Fergusson with the portable TerraTrencher half a metre.” For more information, go to terrasaw. com.

TOKATOKA LIME

Regulations spark opportunity

Co Ltd

Tightened United States rules on grass-fed milk and meat branding can be a windfall for Kiwi farmers, says Nathan Balasingham, Chief Technical Officer of New Zealand biotechnology company Zest Biotech. The updated USDA rule for ‘grassfed’ or ‘pasture-fed’ milk or meat is very restrictive. If managed prudently, it could give New Zealand farmers a market advantage. The rule, which was published in December 2019, will exclude a lot of our competitors who will not be able to eliminate grain from their feed. According to the US Department of Agriculture ‘Grass Fed’ or ‘100% Grass Fed’ claims may only be applied to meat and meat product labels derived from cattle that were only (100%) fed grass (forage) after being weaned from their mother’s milk. The diet must be derived solely from forage, and animals cannot be fed grain or grain by-products and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season until slaughter. That means 100% grass-fed animals are never confined to a feedlot. Grass-fed milk and meat are considered healthier with better taste and flavour. Animals raised as grassfed have better animal health, animal welfare and climate change outcomes. The milk and meat has a better omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio, higher levels of antioxidants, lower risk of E coli infection and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and are, therefore, better for consumer health. Nathan Balasingham says that new US government regulations will have a positive impact on Kiwi farmers who are wise to their implications

that is tender because it cooks faster, and the well-marbled meat, in the opinion of many connoisseurs, is better-tasting than grain-fed beef. Zest Biotech has developed a pasture spray, Biozest, that is reported to significantly increase pasture productivity. Louise and Neville Williams, certified organic dairy farmers and Ballance Farm Environmental Awards winners in Karapiro, did a trial on baleage. The Biozest treated paddocks produced 13 bales a hectare on average, the untreated control paddocks averaged

just seven bales a hectare. There was a 78% increase in baleage overall. Mike and Janelle Kelly in Orongo, near Thames, carried out a similar trial and produced 12 bales a hectare from the Biozest treated paddocks and five bales out of the untreated control paddocks. There was a 129% increase in baleage overall in the Biozest treated paddocks. If our farmers can improve pasture productivity on this scale, they can safeguard our grass-fed brand, which is valuable in all markets.

The Adairs were runners-up in the same category last year and believe the awards programme allowed them to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their business. In 2015 the couple moved to New Zealand from the UK where Charlie managed a 300-cow dairy farm. Runners-up in the Northland Share Farmer of the Year category were first-time entrants Hamish and Ella Ferguson from Okaihau and third place went to Jose Hamber and Kirby Wilson from Helensville. Sheena Waru is assistant manager of Chris and Jane Mitchell’s 195ha property, milking 520 cows. She entered the awards to step out of her comfort zone, take a risk and make the most of the challenge. Wellsford farm manager Fred Hohaia was runner-up in the Dairy Manager category. Poutama Toto is a farm assistant on Terence and Suzanne Brocx’s 450-cow, 171ha property. He was runner-up in the 2019 Northland Dairy Trainee category and chose farming as a career because he enjoys being hands-on, working outdoors and hard work. Runner-up was Reed

The ‘wizard’ vs the farmboy by Andy Bryenton

One was called the ‘Wizard of Menlo Park’ thanks to his inventions, which transformed modern society. The other was a farmer’s son from Pahiatua. When the pair faced off over creating a new way to milk cows, all the smart money was on Thomas Alva Edison, enthroned as the ‘new Isaac Newton’, friend of industrialists Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. However, the smart money would have lost. In turn-of-the-1900s Wairarapa, machinery was becoming a bigger part of farming. The leather belts, steam engines and turning wheels of wool processing machinery, and the shuttle ploughs and timber mills, which ran off traction engines fascinated young Norman Daysh. He knew that others had been trying to perfect a milking machine for some time. Previous attempts had all been made by engineers and scientists who did not have his practical experience. As a Kiwi farmhand, Norman was all too familiar with milking cows, and he knew that contraptions that hurt or scared the animals would be useless in the shed. Thomas Edison had fixed his sights on various designs, in an attempt to do for dairy what others had done before him for grain with the combine harvester. The inventor of the record player and the light bulb examined ideas with rollers,

gripping automaton ‘hands’, pulsators and many other concepts. None was practical in the reality of the farmyard, where complicated machines could be kicked to pieces or contaminated with dirt, and anything that spooked the cattle would cause more harm than good. Contraptions with belts, springs and tanks for the cow to wear were rejected out of hand. Enter Daisy, the first cow to experience a modern milking machine. In the farm kitchen of Norman Daysh, this pioneering animal was the test subject for his final development. It was a milking machine of the kind we know today, vacuum-powered, with cups that mimic the action of a suckling calf. Daysh took out a swathe of patents, then set off for New York, where the DeLaval company accepted his idea with open arms. They have been quoted as saying that “What Norman

Daysh achieved remains the basis of our company today”, and worked with Daysh to release a revolution in farming in 1917. The farmer’s son from the back blocks beat Edison, who was thankful

for the advancement even if he didn’t win the race. In his later years, he swore by fresh milk as a health tonic, and Norman and DeLaval’s creation kept it in ready supply.

In a note to the co-operative’s farmerowners and unitholders, Mr Monaghan explained that his decision was the next step in the Fonterra Board’s

development and succession planning. “After 11 years as a director, and having seen through the introduction of our new strategy, operating model, and with our

Monaghan retires from the board. Under Fonterra’s constitution, its chairman must be selected from its pool of seven elected farmer directors on the board. Its independent directors are not eligible for consideration as chairman. The co-operative also provided an update on a replacement for former independent director Simon Israel, who retired from its board in November last year. Fonterra says it is making good progress on securing a replacement for Mr Israel and will update its farmerowners and unitholders once a suitable candidate has been confirmed.

Quality Suffolk Rams at Affordable Prices

Matt Ward, B+LNZ general manager North Island, says according to the Ministry for Primary Industries, hemp or hemp products used as animal feed are regulated under the ACVM Act 1997 and are classed as agricultural compounds. “It is an offence to use any ACVM that is not authorised, and there are no hemp products authorised for use in livestock in New Zealand. While the area of hemp grown in NZ is very small, and hemp has very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance found in cannabis plants — any trace of THC could result in lines of export meat being rejected,” he says. “Even running stock on to harvested hemp crops may result in traces of THC being found in meat, which could put New Zealand’s red meat exports at risk. Given the poor feed quality of hemp stalk, it is unlikely that it would be used for grazing lambs. However, farmers might be tempted to run cull ewes onto crop residue before sending them off for processing, particularly given feed shortages and lack of killing space. “It would be very easy for farmers to unwittingly run old ewes or mature cattle on to hemp stubble without thinking of the remote, but potentially, devastating chance of THC tainting the meat. “While crop stubble is often very valuable at this time of year for stock at or above optimum body condition, hemp should be avoided and shut off from all livestock. Feeding hemp to livestock is strictly forbidden and as well as contravening the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act. Doing so could put New Zealand’s red meat exports in jeopardy.” In regard to hemp seeds and hemp seed products used as animal feed are regulated under the ACVM Act

Robots among us for 25 years In 1995, Husqvarna took the first step into a new product segment with the launch of the world’s first robotic lawnmower, the Husqvarna Solar mower. It started to change the way lawns are maintained all over the world. To highlight a quarter-century since this breakthrough, Husqvarna is giving away a single, strictly limited-edition model of their latest Automower 315X.

“We’re very proud to have developed the category to reach this business milestone and to release a limited edition 315X to mark the occasion,” says Sofia Axelsson, vice president of Husqvarna Division’s consumer unit. “With Husqvarna Automower, we’ve been determined to continuously innovate our solutions in order to lead the category forward, and we’re excited about what the future holds for robotic mowing.” In 1992, Bengt Andersson, the Husqvarna CEO at the time, saw the potential in robotic mowing and formed a group of engineers who developed what would become the first Husqvarna robotic mower — the Husqvarna Solar mower. Three years later, the company released its first generation of Husqvarna Automowers, robotic mowers, which returned to a grid-connected charger. That made it possible to mow the lawn around the clock and regardless of the weather. The mower knew when the battery required charging and returned automatically to the charging station. The second generation of Husqvarna Automower was introduced in 2003 and

featured a new design and a number of improvements. Later, other models based on this platform were launched, including a mower that could manage lawns up to 6,000m2 and a hybrid mower with both solar cells and battery. The third generation Husqvarna Automower platform arrived in 2011. Five years later, the Husqvarna Automower 430X and 450X were introduced, both equipped with GPS theft tracking, GPS assisted navigation and Husqvarna’s Automowers are the quiet advance guard of the LED headlights. In 2019, the robotics revolution, helping make lawn care stress free first all-wheel-drive robotic mowers were launched; the Husqvarna “Husqvarna has progressed from being Automower 435X AWD for residential a professional chainsaw brand, into customers and the 535 AWD for a market leader in the outdoor power professional customers. Being all-wheel- equipment industry. “With our passion for innovation, drive machines, both mowers can handle inclines of up to 70%. Every seed in its place by Andy Bryenton

Each year the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers gathers to judge the top 50 most innovative products and engineering designs in the food and agriculture industry. The resulting AE50 Awards are chosen by international engineering experts and provide a snapshot of state-of-the-art in the agricultural tech industry. Winning products are recognised for their ingenuity, for advanced product development, and for saving farmers time, costs and labour in the field, while making advances in ecology, economy and operator safety. With only 50 places to award across all the multiple facets of farming, they are hotly contested — to say the least. This year a significant AE50 Award went home with John Deere, for their highly advanced N500C Series air drill. Judges deemed the complex implement with its simplified interface; an outstanding innovation that improves production on the farm. “AE50 Awards reaffirm the innovative spirit of our employees and illustrate John Deere’s commitment to bring those linked to the land the most useful, highquality products possible,” says Joel Dawson, the director of production and precision agriculture for John Deere’s. He cited the firm’s commitment to innovation as the reason behind the win. “No one in the industry invests more in research and development than John Deere, and we remain committed to that strategy. Our engineers take great pride in creating new technology and

Twin-spin induction for Ranger

MUFFLER SERVICES

by Andy Bryenton

Ford’s success with the Ranger ute is verging on the biblical, with variants of the popular light commercial popping up everywhere you turn. Stand on a busy street corner and count them going past, and you’ll see just how deep New Zealand’s love affair with the Ranger goes. Now there’s a new name in the line-up, and it’s not so much filling a gap as it is creating new demand, with the magic words ‘bi-turbo’. It’s not the first twin-forced-induction Ranger, but it is the return of the FX4 badge to the line-up, slotting in just between the XLT and the top-spec Wildtrak. It’s not just twin-spooling action under the hood which recommends this new machine. There’s a whopping 10 gears behind the bell housing as well, and some distinctive styling to make the new FX4 stand out from the pack. “We are excited to be able to offer our customers the new FX4 with the biturbo engine alongside the class-leading 10-speed automatic transmission. To have the addition of both a 4WD and 2WD Ranger FX4 really steps things up for them. It is the first time we have offered the bi-turbo/10-Speed combination in a 2WD Ranger,” said Simon Rutherford, managing director of Ford New Zealand. “It’s all wrapped in its very own design elements and features, to offer customers a Ranger with a genuine identity as a stand-alone model.” Ford’s bi-turbo powertrain was first introduced on the Ford Performance Ranger Raptor and produces a healthy

Electric utility surprise by Andy Bryenton

A new species has been spotted at the Auckland Zoo but also threading its way through the narrow dockland lanes around the America’s Cup Village. Representatives will be discovered cruising around orchards and vineyards or helping out on golf courses and resorts. It’s not an exotic creature, however, but the new Goupil G4, a small, compact electric truck, which tucks into the market where that old warhorse (or war pony) the Suzuki Super Carry 1000 once dominated. With Japanese Kei-car dimensions and 135 kilometres of range on a single

charge, the Goupil can be certified for road use but is equally at home on gravel or the turf. It’s silent, efficient, quick to charge and comes with three different battery options. However, that’s not the real surprise or the best thing about this small utility vehicle. While it won’t conquer the truly rough terrain,

The tiny, innovative Goupil G4 is being brought to NZ — an all-electric mini truck with modular uses

which UTV side-by-sides manage, this tiny truck is made to be modular, with many different rear-tray cargo fit-outs. That means hauling tools and equipment in a closed workplace like a vineyard, resort homestay or fruit orchard can be switched out for a power sprayer quite easily. There’s even the option for a fully refrigerated ‘backpack’ turning the G4 into a small chiller truck to take goods to the local farmers market or to be dropped off at a central processing hub. Goupil’s latest (the French company spent 15 years refining the preceding G3 into what we see today) may not

have flat out speed like a Tesla, but it makes up for this with two aspects that viticulture and fruit growers may appreciate a little more. Firstly, it can carry 1,200 kilograms, and secondly, while its cab can accommodate two adults, it’s still only 1.2 metres wide. It means that you can now fit a zeroemissions small truck down narrow lanes that were only accessible to a quad before. Also, unlike many small vehicles of its kind, it can wear a number plate, even if its top speed is more suited for country byways and city neighbourhoods than the open motorway.
