Northland dairy duo chosen by Paul Campbell

The Dairy Women’s Network has announced three dairy farming women who have been selected as finalists for its annual Dairy Community Leadership Award, including Megan McCracken and Ann Kearney, both from Kerikeri. The third finalist is Chris Paterson from Rotorua. The award recognises the role they play in leading their communities by sharing their time and skills beyond the boundaries of their own farm gates. “None of these women seek the spotlight, but through their actions they have captured the attention of their colleagues and stand out as pillars of their communities. They don’t go the extra mile for recognition or reward — they do it because they are passionate about the industry and doing whatever they can to help other people,” said DWN chief executive Zelda de Villiers. Bridging the gap between her rural and urban neighbours is a passion for Northland dairy farmer Ann Kearney. Ann works alongside a number of groups outside the industry to share good practices and demonstrate that dairy farming is an environmentally proactive industry that can be sustainable. She works with the local ‘Living Waters’ group, and has been a leader in the farming community with her passion for fencing off and planting and maintaining farm waterways. She has also entered the Ballance Farm Environment Awards this year. Juggling a farming directorship, calving responsibilities and work for the local veterinary clinic alongside supporting her children’s schooling, and contributing to the local DWN membership chapter, Kerikeri’s Megan McCracken is the other Northland finalist. Megan was nominated for going the extra mile for Northland’s dairy farming community as a driving force behind growing membership numbers for the DWN in the region. She has initiated

innovative new ideas for events in an effort to increase participation from dairying farming women, which resulted in an increase in attendance numbers. The winner of the award will receive a $2,500 scholarship from calf rearing equipment specialists Milk Bar, to attend a leadership programme of their choice within New Zealand. The 2014 winner will be announced at a gala dinner at the Dairy Women’s Network annual conference on March 19 in Hamilton.

Boost for Gulf marketplace

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES March 2014

The growing demand for food and beverages in the Middle East area has prompted the appointment of a Ministry of Primary Industries representative to the region, to enhance the efforts of Kiwi exporters. Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy announced the new position for an Agricultural Counsellor to be based in Dubai. “This new position will provide further support for New Zealand exporters,” says Mr Guy. “The position will cover key markets in the Middle East and seek to advance our trade and economic relationships. The position will also contribute to New Zealand’s strategy to develop strong government and private sector relationships with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). “In 2013 New Zealand exported around $1 billion in dairy products to the GCC region and just under $200 million worth of meat products. There is also growing demand for high value food and beverages in this market. “The position will play an important role in our engagement with the relevant

halal authorities in the GCC to reinforce New Zealand’s reputation as a high quality food exporter, responsive to the halal requirements of Islamic markets and Muslim consumers. “Food security is a vital issue for this region with a

scarcity of water and pastoral land. Gulf countries import up to 90% of their food, which gives New Zealand the opportunity to become a partner of choice for both food exports and agri-technology,” says Mr Guy.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY CYNTHIA MATTHEWS

Tui and Riroriro call from trees at the Waima River, Hokianga, where Jan and Kevin O’Boyle are developing a wildlife habitat while living self sufficiently.

T

hey’re gaining satisfaction from returning land to forest and reestablishing a generative wetland. Looking through poplars to young kauri, Jan admits, “Some days we ask ourselves, did we do all this? The O’Boyles would visit Hokianga on holidays. “We kept coming back here. We were looking for 10 acres and ended up with 30 — but it had everything we wanted, Jan explains. They bought their land in 1990. Their home — a moved on

60-year-old Browns Bay beach house — fits in well in its Waima Valley surrounds. The couple faced paddocks of gorse, kikuyu and blackberry and eaten out bush — ‘ground zero’ as described by Kevin. The fences were down and horses and cattle roamed through the valley. An earlier owner had tried establishing an orchard in the 1980s and the land had gone back. The O’Boyles first ring fenced the property to keep out straying stock.

Existing shelter belts of macrocarpa and cypress were pruned and the Rescue horses began grazing down the kikuyu in the paddocks. “We spot spray, plant to the environment and, trap, says

“Some days we ask ourselves, did we do all this?

Kevin. “A good neighbour has helped with shooting. Pestoff bait stations and fur trappers in surrounding forests have helped lower rat and possum numbers. The O’Boyles planted three blocks of poplars on their river flats which behave like a high canopy for birds and are generating an understory. The variety Kawa makes good timber. “The trees are ankle deep in water for part of the year, Jan says. Over eight years the trees were pruned bi-annually until pruned to six metres — Kawa will grow to 50m. Kevin explains Kawa has

commercial value because it takes preservative. (One of this variety’s uses is in super yachts.) Poplar is a medium term crop and the blocks will ultimately be felled and along with the paddocks replanted in natives. There have been three to four big floods since the O’Boyles moved into the valley. “Short and violent and we live with them,” says Jan. The thick flax screening the river was grown from seed as part of the Northern Regional Council’s Clean Streams riparian management scheme. Quinces also tolerate flooding and hold the soil. A row of oaks, grown from acorns, supports regenerating young cabbage trees while pukatea and kahikatea are retaking river terraces from convolvulus and kikuyu. Back at the O’Boyles’ garden, insects aren’t forgotten. Nettle beds provide butterfly food for red and yellow Admirals and the Muehlenbeckia (pohuehue) feeds Coppers. And insects help the O’Boyles.

The Waima valley from the O’Boyles’ gate

They brought a gorse branch infested with gorse mite to the property. “It’s taken some years but it’s definitely killing gorse. The mite seems to prefer older wood,” Kevin says. The creek at the garden’s edge has darting schools of kokupu, which Jan feeds. She suggests kokupu have cleared out the mosquito fish. “Mosquito fish eat very little mosquito but practically everything else,” she says. The creek’s abundant life helps feed shags, white faced herons and kingfishers. There’s also the tadpole pool by the house. The O’Boyles filled a hole with water. “That night we had frogs spawning in it!” Jan put some tadpoles aside to continue the next generation. Meanwhile, the home garden provides Jan and Kevin with an array of vegetables which includes an impressive bed of purple asparagus. The orchard surprised them with persimmons springing back into life, together with the figs and nut trees which will eventually share their ground with natives.

ARRON AND VICKI OGLE WERE BLOWN AWAY BY THEIR WIN AT THE 2013 WESTPAC NORTHLAND BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS, WHERE THEY PICKED UP THE AWARD FOR BEST EMERGING BUSINESS.

T

he Hikurangi couple took over the existing business in September 2011 with the aim of changing people’s perceptions to the homekill industry. Alongside their new business — literally — they manage a dairy farm, using holistic practices where possible, with little chemical intervention. Arron is also a qualified butcher and Vicki’s background is in nursing. The couple have two children, five-year-old Cruz and four — year-old Tiana. Homekill Services had been operating for 25 years, so when the Ogles took over they kept some of the equipment and plant and built a whole new premises on their support block next to the family farm they manage. “We wanted to update the business, bring it into the present and change

our customer’s overall perception of homekill by working professionally and efficiently,” says Vicki. “Ultimately, we want to gain peoples trust and I think being dairy farmers ourselves helps that. We weigh all our beasts in the paddock, so the customer knows how heavy their animal is before it even leaves the farm. We follow the correct procedure and we want people to be confident that they will get back all of their meat with no mix-ups! “When people come to our premises, which we encourage, they are blown away by the structure and cleanliness of our operation,” adds Arron. “An advantage for us, is that we are one of only a few homekill businesses that is exclusively homekill — which means we

electroshock stimulator in the paddock, which also tenderises the meat and helps to pump the blood out.” For the last seven years Arron and Vicki have also managed a 160 acre, 140 cow dairy farm. For the last five

years they have switched to once a day milking and have incorporated ‘natural, back to basics farming’ with significant results. “We farm as organically as possible without being certified organic,” says Arron. “We found it to be better for animal health and fertility. In fact, if the cows could talk, I guarantee they’d thank us!” “It was also a lifestyle choice and helps us keep running costs to a minimum,” adds Vicki. “Our cows are happier, have less foot trouble, and we spend less on shed expenses and vet bills. “We use homeopathic treatments where possible and the first year we tried it on the cows, we reduced our vet bill by $6,000. We never have sick cows anymore.” Arron and Vicki have exciting plans for the future and see many opportunities for growth and development. They say working with

“WE FARM AS ORGANICALLY AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT BEING CERTIFIED ORGANIC” a great team on the farm and in the butchery, makes all the difference and they plan to enter the business awards again this year. Business award judges said that the couple’s success has been through a combination of excellent business processes resulting in a great understanding of their customer needs and tailoring the business to meet these. There is a strong leadership focussed on transitioning the team to a new way while investing significantly to show how serious they are about change.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Collaboration the key for Tanekaha’s Smith family BY CYNTHIA MATTHEWS

Ben Smith is the fourth generation of a family who has fought flood and drought at their farm on the Hikurangi swamp, Tanekaha, north of Whangarei.

T

he last decade has seen a change in strategies driven by Ben, who has joined in with the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group in working to turn around the declining health of the Kaipara moana. IKHMG was established by Ngati Whatua in 2005 and is led by them and the Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust. The Smiths’ JV Farms is an IKHMG flagship farm, demonstrating biodiversity protection and restoration in hand with productivity. The farm has 15 hectares of nationally significant swamp at its doorstep. Farm drainage is connected to rivers and the harbour with its sea grass meadows, fish, Maui dolphins, oyster beds, wading birds, and migrating eels, a long standing Iwi food source. Ben’s mother’s family — the Imms — farmed on the swamp for many years and were one of the first to bring Angus

cattle to New Zealand in the 1870’s. Ben’s grandfather brought his family to the area in the 1940s. Benjamin Smith was involved in the earlier Northern Co-operatives dairy industry and was also instrumental in developing the Hikurangi Drainage Scheme when the government was keen for conversion of marsh into farmland. The Scheme’s network of canals, flood banks and pumping stations are essential to the area’s present high productivity. Ben, Sharon, their three children and Ben’s parents Edwin and Beverley live on the Smith property and Ben’s brother works on it. The 198ha dairy farm winters 320 cows. Younger stock run on the hills with bush and pine on steeper slopes. The milking platform (effective) comprises 100ha with 27 ha in maize. 160,000 kg of milk solids are produced.

SHELTER and SHADE

Seven major floods in ten years have taken a significant toll on the Tanekaha community. The Smiths have had to regress land and once Ben and the family spent all night debagging bread for the cows. “We had 68ha of 100 under water.” The farm’s heavy, highly fertile soils require careful management. Flats are farmed through the winter and the autumn calving adds pressure on feed. Pasture is preserved through feeding stock on an extensive roofed feed pad over winter plus the herd consumes 60

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir The team at Clearwater Crossings Ltd would like to take the opportunity to thank the Northern Farming Lifestyles publication for the response they received after placing an advertisement in December 2013. At the Northland Field Days when we mentioned our Clearwater Crossings patented bridging system,

people would say, ‘Oh yes, we saw your article in that farming paper’, even now, two months later. So we would like to get together with Betty and place another advertisement in the next issue of your paper if at all possible. Thanks again from CCL, Steve and Kelly.

Pasture is preserved through feeding stock on an extensive roofed feed pad

which irrigates 88 ha in summer. It’s also the family’s swimming spot. The dam has tourist recreation potential as well as hosting wildlife such as Grebe Ducks. Ngati Hine Iwi has released thousands of eels into the dam as part of their repatriating the species into the Northern Kaipara. Edwin ‘finished at the shed’ three years ago and lends considerable energy to the Tanekaha Community Pest Control Programme. Every landowner on the Smiths’ road has joined in. The group traps 800 ha of the Kaipara catchment. Kiwi, dabchick, kukupa, fantail, and robin as well as tuna, frogs and fish have all benefited from this effort. The Smiths’ have first hand appreciation of the results — kiwi are back on the Smiths’ farm where Ben says the family sees them feeding and following the cows around.

There are some basic rules for the games, and these include: • The relationship with your horse comes first and foremost (no points awarded if force is used); • # Horses are not to be hit with the ‘carrot stick, savvy string or rope’; The full rules list is comprehensive and may be obtained alomg with application forms at www.animalherbs.co.nz/ html/NorthlandHorsemanshipGames.htm “The objective of the games is to challenge riders and their relationship with their horse in a safe supportive environment as well as create an opportunity to meet others who share a love for natural horsemanship,” says Leanne. “The morning will be made up of games on the ground with games on horseback after lunch. There will be demonstrations by professional horse people showcasing their talents before and after lunch and in the afternoon with times to be advertised, and prizegiving will be held once all the games are completed, about 3pm.“ Ribbons will be awarded at the discretion of the judge to those who successfully complete the games at the level attempted. There will also be special prizes and prizes for the most points awarded at each level and overall. In all there are seven games which will run consecutively.

Built for a hard day’s work There’s a war on for the attention of Kiwi farmers, and it’s one which takes no prisoners. At Northland’s Field Days recently the battle lines were clearly apparent — in one camp, the trusty and time-honoured ATV quad bike, and in the other, the rising force of the side-by-side UTV. Both have their unique points. Both are designed to tackle tough offroad terrain, and pack in a load of men, machinery and tools for all kinds of jobs around the farm. It’s an engineering argument which Polaris have been listening to closely. Their Sportsman quad bikes and Ranger UTVs both sell well here, and recent visits by Polaris designers to these shores have given rise to the Ranger 570 HD — a tougher side-by-side for agricultural use. But the boys in the Polaris backroom haven’t stopped there. They have developed new machines to bridge the gap, starting with the singleseater, fully roll caged Ace, and now following this up with the first quad bike designed from the ground up for New Zealand and Australian demands. Like our other unique antipodean auto it’s called the Ute. But this is no big flat decked truck. The Polaris Ute begins with the template of a Sportsman ATV quad, then beefs it up to handle the hard knocks of farming life. Independent suspension all round improves handling, while a wide, balanced stance keeps the centre of gravity manageable, even with the

addition of a large tipping rear tray. The Ute features advanced engine and gearbox management systems which kick into all-wheel drive when it’s needed, and also allow for a hill descent mode like that seen on bigger ‘cousins’ like the Land Rover Discovery. Even fully laden (with an impressive 550kg towing weight and 180kg in the tipper) the Ute can handle steep surfaces safely. Even better, this new breed of ATV comes with the popular, powerful engine from the Ranger 570 HD, transplanted in to offer serious grunt. The Ranger itself is no slouch, so expect torque and pickup aplenty when the Ute’s throttle is given a nudge! If the Ace was Polaris Industry’s way of bridging the gap from UTVs like their powerful RZR down to the size of a quad, the Ute is their way of pushing the tried and true quad bike formula up into the middle ground — a great option for farmers who want the safety and power of a side-by-side but who don’t necessarily have passengers to take with them on every job. With heightened awareness of safety on farms, the addition of SUVstyle traction and hill descent systems, combined with the added functionality of a tipping deck and maximum towing power may make the Ute a potent combination for farm owners looking to gear up their sharemilkers as well.

ADVERTORIAL

New rules — new opportunities Under the new rules, farm environment plans will soon become compulsory in the Canterbury area and this is expected to be reflected throughout New Zealand. According to Environment Canterbury’s Judith Earl-Goulet the plan does not tell farmers what they can or cannot do but does set limits on allowable nutrient losses. The soluble nature of synthetic phosphate and artificial nitrogen are the two major nutrients that are at the core of nutrient loss into our environment and our waterways. If that’s the major problem then in a real world, rather than a synthetic or artificial world, the problem is easily solved and the change and rectification of the problem can begin tomorrow.

planet for the last 460 million years, when the first plants appeared.

In his book ‘The Closing Circle’ Doctor Barry Commoner, USA, characterised the artificial nitrogen fertiliser industry in its dash for profits, as one of the ‘cleverest business operations of all time’ because evidence exists that in the presence of artificial nitrogen, the natural fixation of nitrogen from the air by soil microorganisms STOPS and as a result it is increasingly difficult for farmers to give up the use of the artificial product. Doctor Arden Anderson, USA, calls it the ‘cocaine’ of the dairy industry.

The heavy use of superphosphate over the past 60 years, according to Doctor Morgan Williams’ report to the New Zealand government in 2004, has left an average of 1.7 tonnes of locked up phosphate per hectare in our farming soils. The microorganisms in Agrissentials’ fertilisers can source this locked up phosphate and convert it to a plant available form.

Nitrogen is essential for plants, so where do all the natural forests (unfertilised) get their nitrogen requirements? Straight out of the atmosphere via the soil microorganisms and that has been happening on our

Farmers on Agrissentials fertiliser programmes get all their nitrogen requirements for free! Planet earth’s atmosphere is saturated in nitrogen and this natural source of nitrogen reestablishes clovers back to the soil, it is non-evasive to the environment and saves the farmer truckloads of money.

The essential plant requirement for phosphate is 0.2 per cent which is well covered by Agrissentials’ natural fertilisers, together with all the other macro and micro elements which are converted by the soil microorganisms to a plant available form, the ultimate form for plant uptake, and the minerals remain stable within the soil.

This combination of minerals and microbes together with moisture and sunlight is the ultimate formula for plant growth and health ensuring the survival of life and sustainability on our planet. The closer you get to nature, the better everything operates. So, the new rules, new plans, farm licences, new compliance etc are really not an issue, providing you have a strong positive attitude and the right products to make it all happen. Agrissentials was initially set up in 1992 to manufacture and market safe, certified, eco friendly, sustainable fertilisers to meet today’s new demands

for food production — it all begins behind the farm gate, in the soil. There’s never been a better time to call with Agrissentials’ atmospheric nitrogen fixing program incorporating clovers and nature’s nitrogen fixing team PLUS the freight free deals on this month. Top building and renovation tips The sun is out, the year is still fresh and new, and it’s time to tackle those building projects. We asked the pros for top tips. 1. Painting and Outdoors Maintenance With the sun shining it’s a great time to tackle those outdoor tasks. Remember — disconnect your water tank before waterblasting or chemically washing gunk off your roof or out of your gutters. Good, stable ladders and scaffolds will save you an unwanted trip to the emergency room! Wash and demould your outdoor walls before it’s time to paint, and make sure that the paint you have is still up to snuff — stuff left in tins for several years won’t give you great results. With the high UV we experience here in New Zealand, make sure that your paint has a high SPF factor — and that you have bit of the same for your

own skin. Nothing makes chores worse like a tender red sunburn! 2. Bathrooms, Showers and Toilets Sometimes the ‘smallest room’ can seem the biggest task when it comes time to renovate. The best advice from a whole lot of plumbers is — ‘leave the wet stuff to the experts!’ Unless you’re super confident and qualified, the septic, sewerage and waste water systems of your home should not be messed with, as they are a real mess when they go wrong. A top tip for bathrooms is to choose a style that’s contemporary and bright, but also easy to clean. High art is one thing, but having the kids troop through after junior rugby is another, after all. If a big renovation

is on the cards, or especially if you’re doing the popular thing and adding an en suite, you may want to think about upgrading to an eco-friendly greywater or complete septic-tank-free waste water system at the same time. And don’t forget that vinyl or tiles in the bathroom are going to take a soaking — extra care is definitely needed. 3. Mighty Man Caves With the cost-effective range of kitset garages and sheds, carports and ‘gottages’ out there today, it makes sense to add on more space for all those manly projects — at least, that’s what we’ll tell the missus! It’s easy, too, to turn an existing garage into some much needed man-space. Your local builders or building suppliers can offer advice pertinent to

Talk to local glaziers about replacing that rusty old rolling door with a neat ranch slider if you’re not actually going to dissect classic cars in there! 4. Keeping out Unwanted Pests These come in many varieties — the little ones with wings, and the more dangerous types with crowbars and swag bags. Both may be easily hindered with the application of a little forethought and technology. First up, plan for the installation of screen doors and insect screens when you plan your build or renovation. There are styles to suit all forms of decor these days, and they’ll let a cool breeze in, while keeping mozzies and flies out. Security doors and deadbolt locks will increase your defences against human ‘pests’, while there are so many options these days for security lights and cameras that homeowners are spoiled for choice. A neat trick is the new style of camera systems which can send realtime images to a smartphone — images which can then be sent direct to the Police if necessary. 5. Future Proof your Build With new building laws in place, choosing the right builder to oversee your job is more important than ever. 6. IT in the Bag These days most homes are designed to support a massive amount of media infrastructure. When you’re building or renovating, it’s a good time to look at tucking away all those cables, boxes and things with flashing lights on top — for safety as well as image. This is especially true if you want to enjoy the benefits of true home theatre — nothing ruins the image of a cinema in your home like miles of cable duct taped to the walls! Your builder or electrician can advise you on how to make your home’s technology invisible and tidy.

7. Fresh Air, Breathe Easy Many people wonder if they should adopt a ventilation system or heat pump technology in their home — especially if it’s a new home just being built. This is a hard question to answer, as both systems work well together and can compliment each other to provide a better living environment. As a general rule, the first thing to do is install steam extractors in laundries, bathrooms, and kitchens. If your home suffers from condensation or damp, a full, ducted vent system in the roof will work wonders. For temperature changes, however, a heat pump system is perfect. Don’t forget that a heat transfer tube can be piped in from above your fireplace to your bedrooms for even warmth during winter! 8. Treat your Feet Flooring makes a home, both in terms of style and substance. But choosing the right flooring solution is of great importance. Your lifestyle is the key — there are different carpets, for example, for homes with lots of kids, with pets, or with different heating needs. There are

different carpets specifically made for staircases and hallways, as opposed to living rooms and bedrooms. And your choices in vinyl for wet areas and high impact areas are just as wide. Consult with your local flooring experts for the best package to finish off your build, or to match your renovation to the style of your existing home. 9. Get Roofless this Summer If your roof was leaky last winter, get ready for the rainy season now! That’s

the message from local roofers, who also note that when the roof is off it’s also a great chance to upgrade your insulation, install piping for the aforementioned heat trans and vent units, and perhaps even get rid of those 1970s Christmas decorations. With guaranteed rain-free days, your roofing crew can get stuck in, with no tarps required. And you can slide in those batts you know you need, without crawling through a tight trapdoor into the dark.

Technology whose time has come There was a time — not so long ago, in the greater scheme of things — when so called ‘alternative energy’ technologies were consigned to the fringes of accepted building practice. At field days and trade shows one could see the evangelists of solar and wind power bravely weathering the opprobrium of the allegedly more enlightened, condemned as dreamers or worse, as ‘hippies’ with more ecological concern than financial sense. How they must be laughing now. Solar and wind power have become more than just mainstream — solar, at least, is very close to becoming a musthave fixture on new homes. Better technology means that modern solar panels last longer, produce more power and more heat, and even need less upkeep when bolted into place on your roof. Far from the ugly giant drums and banks of yesteryear, there are systems around these days which actually look good in place. Part of the reason for this seachange may indeed be the march of progress. Better panels, better bearings and generators for windmills, and better controlling devices make for more efficiency, turning the economic argument on its head. Unquestionably,

the planet needs all the help it can get as well, with news of global warming and pollution reaching us in larger volumes than ever. But it’s cold hard finance which has spurred most adopters of this technology on. In an electricity market governed by laissez-faire capitalist philosophy, energy prices have spiralled out of control. Privatisation and deregulation have changed the game, with recent asset sales controversies bringing the price increases of recent years into sharp focus. Farmers, in particular, have been forced to seek alternatives, because farmers are above all business people, looking to secure the viability of their endeavours. Solar hot water heaters for dairy sheds are popping up all over Northland as the arithmetic of sunshine hours versus cold hard cash plays out. In Europe, where the average sunshine figures lag behind those of northern New Zealand, solar power

and hot water heating is the accepted norm. For homes, as well as farm buildings, we are likely to see a similar change soon. It’s unlikely to be legislatively based — little need, when market forces have provided attractive options already

for those wanting to buy in. But, like insulation, proper heating and the indoor bathroom, solar power and hot water systems may soon be a key part of any new build, with homes lacking such facilities seeming quaint and primitive.

Au MAINTENANCE

Checklist for the machinery shed

With the hectic days of summer all but behind us, most farmers are now contemplating the steady downhill run into winter, bringing with it much-needed rain. Machinery which has served faithfully throughout hay and silage making, maize harvesting and other hot-weather tasks can now take a well-deserved break, even as new tools of the agricultural trade

come out of the shed. It's the perfect time to give your machinery the onceover before it's put away into hibernation — or indeed, to take stock of wear and tear of all-year-round necessities such as tractors, quads and bikes. Because while the rains of autumn and winter will be welcomed heartily by Northern farmers this year, they bring with them the promise of mud and rust, two big enemies of farming metal. It's a well known fact — and one put into practise by most smart rural folks — that good maintenance beats costly repairs any day. Points which experts identify as especially important to check before your machinery goes into storage (or come out of the box for the new season) are lubrication, hydraulics, and rust. The first is easily fixed with an application of the correct oils and greases. The second, hydraulics, is

primarily all about the condition of the pipes which bear the brunt of immense pressure. Any cracking or perishing should be dealt with right away. Rust attacks all steel and iron surfaces, but chemical and physical means exist to combat it very effectively. The ultimate solution for rusted machinery is to have it sand or bead blasted back to bare metal, and re-coated in tough new paint. Sometimes this seasonal ‘taking stock’ reveals that it's time to put some time-worn piece of equipment out to pasture forever. Certainly, the recent Field Days has left farmers spoiled for choice with the range of replacements at their disposal. If you're contemplating mending the same wheezing quad bike or unreliable tractor for the hundredth time, it's worth

considering that most new models boast superior fuel efficiency and added power. A move up may justify itself in the added work you can get out of a bigger UTV side-by-side instead of the old quad, or the amount of tasks a better, loader equipped tractor could perform, for example. Modern machines are safer, too. The change of seasons has brought myriad small tasks on the farm since well before the days of the internal combustion engine and all that's come with it. But as technology increases it's vital to use this time to assess the state of your fleet, securing yourself with the knowledge that it's ready to power through autumn and winter into the new year.

Au MAINTENANCE A rich farm garden for winter

With shorter colder days and longer nights not that far away, there’s no reason not to have a range of winter vegetables coming along to bolster the dinner table stocks and avoid the rising supermarket prices in town. In the coming cooler weather, a little cover and wind protection can boost the output of farm produce. A good trick is to line the surface of the soil with a layer of mulch, or straw. There’s also nothing wrong with layers of old newspapers either, and this will also inhibit the growth of weeds. Of course if you are lucky enough to have a poly-house, or glasshouse you can look forward to a huge variety of vegetables as well as the good old standbys of silverbeet, broccoli, brussels sprouts and even some of the more robust varieties of lettuce. If in any doubt, it might pay to call in at your town garden centre for advice. Depending once again on where your garden is set up you could consider spring onions, radishes, cabbages, peas even. The list goes on. But there is also more to just getting advice on what to plant and putting it in the ground. More than any other time of year, your winter plants need nurturing. It’s not time to plant and forget. Plants should be healthy when you get them home from the garden centre. They need to get their roots established, so watch over them until they get that done. A little plant food fertiliser goes a long way to help. So lets look now at other ways to help our vegetables into the kitchen. Vegetables of course require regular watering. Without it they will simply not fill out. You can’t always rely on rain. If you have the means, a drip irrigation system is a definite plus for a well-producing vegetable garden. The new component systems are relatively inexpensive and also really quite easy to install.

Time to look at farm access

For

Plumbing Roofing & Drainage

A key to good farming is access to the land, and in this regard, autumn is a good time to be looking at how easily you reach the corners of your property before the onset of winter, rain and mud. Well-designed and maintained tracks and raceways are one of the secrets to a productive farm business. They make it quicker and easier to get around the farm, reduce wear and tear on farm vehicles, and help prevent lameness in stock. Dairy cow lameness can cause production losses of up to $200 per cow in the first 10 to 12 weeks of the milking season. Good tracks and raceways make it quicker and easier to get around the farm — saving time, they also improve water quality by keeping dirty runoff out of waterways. Careful maintenance of track water tables diverts runoff water into paddocks, preventing the track from

channelling and eroding. The pasture then acts as a filter, removing and using contaminants from the runoff for growth. This keeps nutrients on the farm and out of streams and rivers. Designing farm tracks and raceways that have a low impact on the environment often makes good business sense. Careful planning helps you get it right first time, reducing maintenance in the long term. When designing tracks and raceways think about the best route for farm needs and the environment. Keeping

Dairying’s giant marketplace by Paul Campbell

Despite scares and alarms around milk products in China, the fact remains that demand for New Zealand protein imports has been rising fast and a recent visit by a Chinese government official has given some indications as to why. China’s Deputy Head of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, Chen Xiwen, met with Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy to discuss the background in which New Zealand dairy exports to China rose 79% to NZ$4.7 billion in 2013 and milk powder exports doubled to NZ$4 billion. Mr Chen attributed the huge growth to a wealthier Chinese marketplace that has outstripped the production of food in the country — despite the fact that has doubled in the last 35 years. With the county’s population increasing by seven million births a years, imports are expected to be a basic necessity for at least the next decade.

China’s population was not only growing, but getting richer and more urban, which meant demand for animal protein was growing quickly. “We don’t have the ability to match that demand,” Mr Chen said through an interpreter, adding that China imported two million tonnes of dairy products last year “and a significant proportion of that is milk powder, and the majority of that is from New Zealand.” In 2013, 46 per cent, of New Zealand’s milk powder exports went to China. New Zealand ran a trade surplus of $523 million in December, according to Statistics NZ figures.

Irrigate effluent further at lower cost When irrigating effluent, consistent pressure and volume over greater distances are crucial – a case for progressing cavity (PC) pumps, says noted pump maker Mono Pumps New Zealand. “Mono PC pumps allow farmers to spread effluent further without costly upgrades to power supply,” says the company’s general manager Shazad Ibnul. “So, based on comparisons with centrifugal effluent pumps that deliver a similar performance, a Mono option will cost less to operate.” Mono has supplied water pumps to New Zealand farmers for more than 40 years and has 15 dealers nationwide providing service and support direct to New Zealand farmers. With a range of flows and standard discharge heads of up to 120m, Mono eliminates the need for a series of pumps when irrigating paddocks further away from the pond. Mr Ibnul says no one knows PC technology better than Mono. “This is what Mono is known for. We’re one of the first PC pump manufacturers in the world with pumps powered by diesel, electricity and solar.” He says Mono dairy effluent pumps use up to 75% less power than a centrifugal pump.

Hoof Print with Fred Hoekstra

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Following on from my earlier articles on tools, this month I would like to talk about angle grinders and discs. The angle grinder is becoming increasingly popular for hoof trimming and I am often asked for my opinion about it. If it wasn’t for the angle grinder we would walk around with RSI. It does make the job easier and quicker, but there are a few things to be aware of. There are still people who use normal grinding discs meant for steel on hooves instead of the correct specialised discs. I am sure you wouldn’t use a hoof disc

on steel — therefore you shouldn’t use a steel cutting disc on a hoof. The cutting disc will clog up very quickly and overheat the hoof (this is where the burning smell comes from), which causes damage to the live tissue of the hoof, and that is not our aim. There is a range of discs available on the market made especially for hooves, yet I can appreciate that it may still seem like a daunting task to decide on the right one for you. Let’s have a look at some of those discs and what their pro’s and con’s are. The cheapest disc that we stock is the Wopa grain disc. Obviously, the price is their biggest pro. It is an effective disc and will last for a good number of cows. Most people who use them tell me that they last for at least a year. The disc looks like a really coarse sand paper and many people think that it must be very aggressive. In this case looks are deceiving. It is not too aggressive but because of the way they are made it can lose some bits of grit as you work with it. This may unbalance the disc which will make it vibrate slightly. Another disc we stock is

the one made by Demotec in Germany. This is an aluminium disc with seven little carbon blades in it. I was very impressed with this disc when I tried it out. It would be too slow for us as professionals dealing daily with large numbers of cows, to work with, but for a farmer it is ideal. It is a very well-balanced disc which leaves a nice clean smooth surface on the hoof. This makes it easier for the trimmer to see what he or she is dealing with. This disc is about $80 dearer than the grain disc, but the great thing about them is that you can turn the blades around as they have two sharp sides to them. When both sides of all seven blades have been used you can replace the blades rather than the whole disc. This makes the disc more costeffective in the long run. The last disc I want to mention is the disc that we as full-time trimmers use. It is a professional disc that is available in aluminium and titanium. We would be very reluctant to recommend this disc to a farmer. It is very aggressive when the blades are sharp and I could almost guarantee that you would lose a cow

if an inexperienced person were to use this disc. That may be enough to turn you away from this disc, if not, the price probably will! Discs are great tools for hoof trimming and it will still work even if you cut in to stones, however this will dull the blades quicker and therefore it is advised that you flick large stones out first. It is also very handy for preparing the hoof for claw blocks. You may be worried about staff using discs and the risk of damaging the cow. That risk is always there, even with a sharp knife. We always need to be sensible when we trim cows’ feet, and a disc does not make a knife redundant.

DairyNZ’s research head set to semi-retire DairyNZ’s chief scientist Dr Eric Hillerton has decided to semi-retire later this year. Dr Hillerton’s early research career was spent at the University of Reading and the National Institute for Research in Dairying in the United Kingdom. He took on the chief scientist position with Dexcel (now DairyNZ) in 2006 after five years working as the principal scientist at the Institute for Animal Health. He said one of the most rewarding parts of being a scientist with DairyNZ is the direct involvement with dairy farmers, understanding the real problems on farms and helping develop solutions and new technologies. “Much of the value of that science lies in taking research and knowledge directly to farmers, and testing how to apply and transfer innovative technologies and solutions.” Dr Hillerton said there have been many highlights during his time with DairyNZ. “I am especially proud of the quality of the scientific research at DairyNZ, which has become outstanding. We now have top scientists here who are truly world-leading. An example is our work identifying genetics involved in feed conversion efficiency by dairy cows.” That work was recognised recently with a gold status awarded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and a Kudos award (Hamilton Science Excellence Awards). DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle said Dr Hillerton has made a great contribution to the New Zealand dairy industry over the past seven years. “Eric has driven a significant improvement in science quality and output, and his relentless focus has had real benefits for farmers.” Following his plans to semi-retire in July, Dr Hillerton will continue to contribute to New Zealand dairy farming through various projects.

Important role for farmers in protecting beaches by Laura Shaft, Northland Regional Council CoastCare Co-ordinator

For most Northlanders, the region’s beaches rank among the highlights of living here. Farmers are in a unique position to appreciate that beaches are not only a treasured playground for activities such as swimming, sunbathing, fishing and surfing — but also serve an important purpose. Sand dunes protect land and property from the effects of the sea and the potential for increased erosion and movement of sand inland. Native sand-binding plants spinifex and pingao are vital to maintaining dune structure. They don’t completely stop direct wave erosion but can reduce wind erosion and most importantly, they help dunes recover more quickly in the wake of storms. These plants are easily damaged and killed by vehicles, horses, stock and even feet. Farmers can contribute by fencing off coastal margins to ensure that stock don’t find their way on to beaches and dunes. Pest animals, such as rabbits, possums, stoats, cats and hedgehogs, all have an impact on the beach environment, so it makes a noticeable

difference if adjoining landowners are able to keep an ongoing pest control programme on their own properties. Controlling weeds also helps prevent their spread on to beaches and dune areas. Here are a few other steps we can all take to help protect our beaches and keep other beach users safe: • Think about whether you need to drive on the beach, if possible park and walk down • Use marked access down to the beach instead of driving on the dunes • Follow all normal road rules, when driving on the beach, including posted speed limits • Try to follow other vehicle tracks and avoid known shellfish beds. A number of studies in recent years have concluded that vehicles can

cause shell cracking and death of shellfish (such as toheroa and tuatua in Northland) • Watch out for shorebirds and other wildlife. Shorebirds (such as New Zealand dotterels and oystercatchers) nest on the beach and in lower dunes, meaning they

are often hard to spot and easy to run over. For this reason many beaches have fenced areas to help protect the nests and allow the eggs to hatch • Check signage for rules about dogs and keep them well away from nesting areas.

ADVERTORIAL

Nature’s own super compost The most highly concentrated form of compost available, Humate is the ancient remains of organic matter decomposed over millions of years.

Humate is free of any chemicals, and contains fulvic and humic acids, which are proven to help retain nutrients for plants and stimulate root development. From the land, back to the land — increase your crop growth and yields with pure, natural Humates. • Increases crop growth and yield • Far smaller volumes than compost are required — only 100kg per hectare compared to 1,000kg per hectare • Blend with any fertiliser for simple, cost-effective application So, what exactly does Humate do? Humates is a soil conditioner like no other, improving soil structure and moisture retention, releasing lockedin minerals for uptake by plants, and increasing worm populations and other biological activity in the soil. Using Humates with your fertiliser reduces your requirements for fertiliser application. Because in most cases, humates help make these nutrients not only more available to the plant but allow the plant to use them more efficiently. Humates also helps your fertilisers work harder, by strengthening plant root systems and slowing the release of fertiliser in the soil. Your plants are able to absorb more nutrients and utilise them

more effectively — also meaning less fertiliser released into our environment. Also, since humates are completely decomposed, they do not enter into nutritional competition with plants for nutrients like nitrogen. In comparison, using raw or not fully decomposed compost can deplete the nitrogen levels in your soil, affecting crop growth. Feel free to contact Dave at NZ Humates on 0508 HUMATE (486283), email info@humates.co.nz or visit www. humates.co.nz.

Kaipara’s township of Ruawai will be celebrating 100 years of existence this month. A jewel in the dairy and horticultural sectors, it has also produced some very innovative personalities, but none quite like the famous Jeffs brothers who in 1959 registered their company JBL Developments Limited. They owned farms and established a number of commercial businesses including manufacturing concrete products, a panel beating business and owning a supermarket. The three Jeffs brothers, Jim the eldest, Kevin and the youngest Vaughan, were of Irish descent. Their mother Cassie and their father Ned Jeffs raised a very close-knit Catholic family. All three inherited a family characteristic, an engaging lopsided smile, a twinkle in the eye and a smile to win friends with. Recently Vaughan Jeffs passed away. Brothers Jim and Kevin passed away some years ago. By the early 1960s, construction had become the major part of the Jeffs’ business, they were dotting the surrounding district with their milking sheds, barns and commercial buildings and the profits grew. The Jeffs in the early 1960s were major suppliers to the Ruawai Dairy Company. Jim Jeffs and fellow supporters became involved in the Ruawai Dairy Company issue whereby they

actively sought amalgamation with the neighbouring Northern Wairoa Dairy Company. Their campaign sought relief through the Courts right up to the Privy Council and at the time the Ruawai area was split into two camps. The suppliers on the Pouto Peninsula were re-zoned to the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company in 1963. Jim Jeffs was the ideas man, but he described Kevin his brother as the pioneer of the family. Whenever a new project was launched, Kevin was sent in first to establish it. The Jeffs in 1965 started establishing businesses in Auckland. Vaughan stayed in Northland looking after the home front, until he moved to Auckland in 1967. In Auckland they established a large fishing venture in downtown Auckland and built a number of modern fishing trawlers. They established a large building company called JBLSargent Construction Ltd, building and constructing office blocks and introduced the leaseback principal of attracting a tenant and then selling the whole package off to a willing buyer. In those days New Zealand was not a free market economy. On 2 May 1972

Historic club hosts modern contest by Paul Campbell

Sharks and stingrays are on the catch list in a newly launched fishing contest set for the Kaipara Harbour on April 12. The venerable Pahi Regatta Club, founded by pioneer farmers and Kaipara sailors more than a century ago, has resurrected the contest and prizes are on offer for the two aforementioned species as well as the usual snapper, kahawai and gurnard. The entire harbour is the fishing ground. “We have a real innovation for the contest too,” says club secretary Leah Greenall. “We are going to release ten duck decoys down the harbour, and you can enter the hunt for these. Bring one back to the Pahi Clubrooms where the weighin is at 4pm and be in for a great prize, in addition to perhaps winning another for a good fish catch.” The Pahi Regatta Club dates back to the days when the first Europeans set foot ashore there. Pahi was a bustling camp settlement as those who arrived with the Albertlanders waited here for news of farmland blocks being surveyed for them in Paparoa. An account from the time paints a vivid picture of those early days. “The lovely spring of 1862 was a taste of favours to come in New Zealand’s

Pahi fishing enthusiast Gary ‘Gravey’ Greaves will be hoping for a similar catch in the big contest on April 12

genial climate,’ wrote Albertland contemporary, Sir Henry Brett. ‘Hence the stay at Pahi was in many ways pleasant. The account goes on to say living at Pahi was at least cheap, ‘with the river abounding in, fish’. It also goes on to list settler’s names — names which still pepper the local telephone book in 2014.

‘On the Pahi River were six pioneers — Messrs Barton, Copley, Cockayne, Sheaf, Haynes and Henry Little … Messrs G Tibbets, R Fenwick, Busby and Bullen took up neighbouring holdings’. One thing is almost certain — there will be many pioneer family descendants out on the harbour angling for a prize as the fishing contest kicks off at 7am on April 12.

THE ONE STOP ALPACA SHOP

Welcome to 2014 Welcome to the second edition of Abundant Living in 2014. Over the past 10 years I have written over 400 columns covering many topics. Most of these are related in some way to the role of nutrients in protecting and reclaiming our health. In the process I have spoken by phone to thousands of readers and offered personalised advice where appropriate. I trust you will benefit from the comments and advice. I also write a longer weekly email column. To subscribe to this column just follow the instructions below. By way of introduction to new readers, I am the founder of my company Abundant Health, established in 1998. I work with various international experts to formulate what I think are a very special group of nutritional supplements. I also practise as a nutritional medicine practitioner providing personalised advice in a structured way. This column brings together my thoughts as a both a nutritional therapist and supplement formulator and researcher. The next few months will be a very special time for me as we introduce a product I am sure will have a profoundly positive affect on cardiovascular health. This is a completely natural product that research shows is the most effective natural cholesterol support product available. Many people have genetically high cholesterol which causes an imbalance in the series of liver enzymes responsible for new cholesterol production. This US patented product will help balance these enzymes. This will be excellent for people who cannot tolerate cholesterol medicines or for those who prefer not to take them. People on cholesterol medication will also be able to take it safely as it will have many heart health benefits not just cholesterol balance. I will be writing a new series on heart health which will focus on the types of diet and supplements that can offer significant benefits for those concerned about their heart and circulatory health. We will be looking at most aspects of cardiovascular health with everything from cholesterol to the actual processes which cause arteries to block. We will look at hypertension and in particular the types of diet proven to help lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health. In the meantime feel free to call me for personalised advice. Gas & Tyre

brought to you by

SER V ICES

A proving ground for tyre toughness When two representatives of international tyre giant Nokian visited New Zealand recently, it was to add our own local experience to the recipe for the perfect forestry tyres. Product Manager Teemu Vainionpaa and Sales Manager Tuomas Farlin needed no help with tread pattern design, cross-section architecture or compound composition however — all of this technical wizardry is taken care of in the research and development labs of the respected Finnish company. What the pair was looking for was the harshest forestry environment on Earth — part of a globe-spanning effort to perfect their latest range of Forest King tyres. The blistering cold of Russia, the backwoods of Alabama in the USA, and a host of other locations were chosen as test-beds for these game-changing, ultra-tough tyres. But it was here that Teemu and Tuomas discovered the most rugged terrain and the most demanding conditions on offer. And it’s here, with the help of local Nokian suppliers Gas and Tyre Services, that the hard work they have put into development has really paid off. After a year of gruelling tests, on some of the most powerful machines

in forestry, the discerning Nokian men gave their new Forest Kings a big pass mark. Stumps, jagged, shattered rocks, hilly terrain and the notoriously ‘un-gentle’ touch of our hard-working loggers had not made a massive impact on the tough-as-nails tyres, with bare millimetres of tread depleted. This is all set to mean less punctures, less downtime, and less expenditure for forestry bosses who opt for Nokian tyres in years to come. In forestry, a flat tyre is more than just a nuisance — it represents tens of thousands of dollars of lost revenue, as a whole chain of men and machines are stalled waiting. Even with Gas and Tyre Services standing by 24/7 on call, it’s a situation most loggers would rather avoid! Nokian’s representatives may now be confident that their new tyres have stood up to the hardest knocks in the forestry world. Gas and Tyre Services are pleased to have been part of this intensive trial, which has helped deliver a product to the international forestry industry

Teemu Vainionpaa and Tuomas Farlin inspect a giant forestry skidder’s tyres for wear and tear

which will boost performance for years to come. They are happy to announce that Nokian Forest King tyres have now moved from being a prototype to full production — and that they are available here from Gas and Tyre Services in both Dargaville and Kaitaia. While Finland may seem like a remote, far flung corner of the world to us here in New Zealand, the lessons learned in the punishing area of our hilly forests will be put into practice there, then exported to the world. In the future, agricultural tyres, truck tyres and even the tyres for your family car may make use of Nokian’s research to last longer and handle tougher conditions. Nokian’s name comes from a place which, while geographically unfamiliar

to many, is already definitely on the map. Both the tyre producers and electronics giant Nokia come from the same municipality in southern Finland — indeed, from the same town where, in 1865, Fredrik Idestam established a timber mill. In relative isolation, two of the biggest concerns for Idestam and his men must have been the viability of their machines and communications. It’s no coincidence that Nokian and Nokia came from this pioneering beginning to achieve dominance in their chosen industries. There’s nothing, after all, like a difficult start to teach the lesson that innovation and constant development are the key to lasting success. Nokian’s Forest King tyres are ample proof of this.

Forest & Woodlot owners If you are considering harvesting in the next 1-3 years, NZ Forestry Ltd provide professional harvesting and marketing advice and management to maximise your net return. We start with careful planning to complete the operation efficiently, evaluate all the sales options, & minimise your risk. It is our responsibility to manage the health, safety & environmental risks of your job. We also provide general forest management services, and will provide sound and practical advice for your growing forest asset. So if you wish to replant we will advise your options. We have two Registered Forestry Consultants who can undertake valuations where required & provide expert advice. NZ Forestry Ltd & ForestLand Ltd recently merged, so if you have previously dealt with ForestLand you will get the same professional service & attention to detail as in the past. For an obligation free discussion contact NZ Forestry Ltd today!

Adding value to forestry

A group of leading Australian commercial architects is visiting New Zealand to come up to speed with developments in the use of engineered wood in commercial buildings. “When many New Zealanders think of forestry and timber processing, they think of logs on our wharves. This unfortunately obscures the rapid progress New Zealand scientists, engineers, architects and wood processors are making with the use of engineered wood in wide-span and multistorey commercial buildings,” says NZ Wood chairman Paul Nicholls. “While Australia has some outstanding commercial buildings made from engineered wood, they don’t have the big manufacturing plants making these products like we do in New Zealand. “New Zealand wood processors have made huge investments in Glulam, laminated veneer lumber and cross

laminated timber and several of them are now investing in massive computer controlled processing centres.” University of Tasmania Professor Robert Morris-Nunn, a winner of many architectural awards, says he will focus on innovative timber engineering, using timber in ways never envisaged even 25 years ago. “Timber is a building product that is uniquely sustainable by being self-regenerative. There is now increasing interest worldwide in better understanding this resource and developing new engineering principles to make better use of it as the preferred building material. “New Zealand is at the forefront of this renaissance.”

Selling the wood from the trees Demand for Northland trees is strong with both domestic mills and exporters looking to secure fibre supply. The strength of the export market is driving price, in many cases to the advantage of forest owners who are currently harvesting their trees. With the increased interest in the market, the number of log purchasers and parties sourcing wood has grown. This potentially makes it a minefield for owners of trees, as they struggle to best realise the value of their timber resource in a buoyant market, and be confident that the decisions they are making are sound. Independent forestry professionals Northland Forest Managers (1995) Ltd (NFM) are available to meet and provide forest owners with

information to help them make informed decisions in the forest owners best interests. If you are looking at engaging a forest manager, NFM urge you to ensure you understand what fees you are signing up for, including likely logging and associated harvesting costs. A saving of a few hundred dollars in management fees does not make good economic sense if you then pay thousands of dollars more in extraction costs!

Your Forestry Management Experts www.northlandforestmanagers.co.nz

Northland’s climate and soils pose many challenges to a forest manager; challenges that NFM are well experienced in handling. NFM offers a complete forest management service to forest owners which includes; • Planning & Resource Consent • Silviculture • Forest Establishment • Administration • Harvesting and Transport • Forest Protection • Marketing and Sales • Public Use Management NFM has a number of clients wanting to purchase standing timber & forest. Call us first if you are thinking of selling. 13 Cobham Rd, KeriKeri
