An academy, aimed at farmers with career aspirations to be herd or dairy production managers, has been opened by industry leaders in the Central Plateau.

Ph: 09 426 7313 www.kiwireco.co.nz

The Central North Island Dairy Academy is a $1.1 million investment by Shanghai Pengxin on its Ariki farm located on the outskirts of Taupo. The investment forms part of the additional $20 million capital injection Shanghai Pengxin has made into the 16 farms, formerly owned by the Crafar family, since they were acquired in 2012. The training facility is a collaboration between Shanghai Pengxin and Landcorp Farming’s joint venture company, Pengxin NZ Farm Management and accepts 10 students at a time. The first intake has commenced study in the inaugural 32 week residential programme which combines theory and practical training with on-farm experience. Shanghai Pengxin’s New Zealand representative, Terry Lee, said the facility will contribute to the development of future dairy farm leaders in New Zealand. “Well educated, experienced farmers are the lifeblood of any dairy industry and the academy’s establishment was a condition of the Overseas Investment Commission’s approval of our acquisition of the ‘Crafar farms’. We are delighted and proud to reinforce our commitment to, and support for, the New Zealand dairy industry. “The programme is fully funded by Pengxin NZ Farm Management so attendance is free for all participating students. We will also award annual ‘Theland’ scholarships worth $10,000,” said Mr Lee. Graduates will receive Massey University’s Diploma in Agriculture level

five. The programme has been designed to appeal to people with some level of technical skill or knowledge in the dairy sector. “The students complete four papers over two semesters covering topics including animal husbandry, pasture and crop productivity, soils, leadership and agricultural engineering. “They live in housing on nearby farms and combine classroom study provided by Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre with practical application of learning on the Ariki dairy farm.” Taratahi students Jeremy Packard and Justin Ruygrok were both raised on dairy farms and say the outdoor lifestyle was a big attraction for wanting a career in the industry. Jeremy said he has always loved working with animals and tractors and he enjoys the wide range of activities on the farm. Justin is a seventh generation dairy farmer from the top of the South Island and is interested in the farm element of the diploma. Landcorp chief executive, Steve Carden said “Landcorp is committed to the development of young talent in New Zealand’s agriculture sector and the Dairy Academy will sit beside Landcorp’s other investments in training programmes across the country. “There is strong demand for skilled people, particularly in mid-management level roles such as herd or production managers and we’re really proud of our involvement in this initiative.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES March 2016

New trustees for board Matamata and Atiamuri based dairy farmers Tracy Brown and Karen Forlong have been appointed to the Dairy Women’s Network trust board. “My vision is to provide support to women in the dairy industry, in order for them to reach their potential,” said Tracy who farms with her husband Wynn at Tiroroa Farms near Matamata. The Browns milk 700 cows producing 260,000 kilograms of milk solids per year. They were 2010 Waikato Ballance Farm Environment Awards Supreme Winners, leading Tracy to become Regional Coordinator for the Waikato Ballance Farm Environment Awards for the following three years. As she joins the trust board she is looking at ways of raising awareness of the network’s role of adding value to the dairy industry. “I thought joining the trust was a good way of giving back to an industry that has been good to me,” said Tracy. “I am also coming in with a fresh set of eyes having only been a member for around 18 months. There are a lot of women not yet connected with the network and I’d like to see that change.” Tracy came to dairying 20 years ago after a career as Economist at the NZ Meat and Wool Boards Economic Service in Wellington. Tracy has four children who are now aged between 10 and 15 years old. She joins the board after completing the 10 month Agri-Women’s Development Trust funded leadership and governance programme ‘Escalator’ in 2015. Karen Forlong says “being appointed felt like

a natural progression, in a way, to apply for a position on the trust board.” She and her husband Maurice farm 350 cows producing 150,000 kilograms of milk solids per year. They have been on the farm for 21 years although she has farmed in Matamata, Ngarua, Tatuanui, Kiwitahi, Arohena and Tokoroa. “I have been a member of the organisation since 2000. In that time the Dairy Women’s Network has always paid it forward,” said Karen. “I have found it delivers on its purpose of supporting and inspiring women to succeed in not only their businesses but also themselves — it truly is a most ‘inclusive’ group of women,” she said. “It was there for me when I needed something beyond the boundaries of the farm. It celebrates what women are doing in dairying today. It gives recognition of our involvement in every aspect of dairying so much more so than was there say 20 years ago.“ Dairy Women’s Network chair Justine Kidd said Tracy and Karen have brought new dimensions to the trust board to help navigate it through challenging times in the industry.

AN ARTISAN by Ann morgan

Oxville Farms is a boutique style abattoir based in Marua Road, Hikurangi and is run by Neil Anderson, his partner Leah Stone and Neil’s father, David Anderson on their 450-acre property.

W

e originally wanted to go to a large abattoir and process our meat to sell at farmers’ markets around Northland but they couldn’t offer us the service we needed. We researched our options and figured there was nowhere else to get it done so decided to investigate doing it ourselves,” said Leah. Over the past year they have built their premises and got all the Ministry of Primary Industry approvals and the

plant is now fully operational. “We have been running for a year processing lamb and goats and have just got the approval to slaughter large animals including buffalo, bison, all hybrid breeds of cattle, llamas and alpacas. “I believe llama is a bit gamier in taste than sheep in flavour. Soon we will be able to slaughter pigs as well. We are just waiting for the equipment to arrive. We have decided we need to put through some good numbers of animals in order

Oxville Farms meat inspector checks each carcass thoroughly before giving it the stamp of approval Darren Lang is the butcher at the boutique style abattoir they are getting quality meat and where it came from originally. “We do the slaughtering and we have our own meat inspector on site to ensure the animal is healthy. Bruce Bartle has been in the industry since he was 19 years old back in 1959. He does an antemortem check and then a post mortem check of each animal. The liver, kidney, inside and outside of each animal gets a full inspection. He checks for arthritis and various other ailments to ensure each animal is healthy for human consumption. “If there is a parasite in the liver or kidneys you see white spots,” said Bruce. “I will condemn the whole animal if it is not classed as safe. I don’t recommend people eat these items with spots.”

The company offer the service to butcher the carcass for clients or there is a local butcher available who can do this as well. Leah runs the business side of things whilst Neil and Dave tend to the physical side. With the final approval from MPI for a beef chain they are now ready to expand their service. “There is a small farmers group who have got together and they are excited to be able to utilise the company knowing that their stock will be well looked after rather than just be loaded onto a truck and taken to a large company. As we are small it is more of a personalised service,” said Leah. “The advantage of coming to us ensures you are able to sell legally. Selling at the markets or privately

allows you to make more profit from your hard work. For small lifestyle block farmers this is important as at the large companies your are given a set price and that is that. We guarantee you receive your animal back as well. “Things are going really well so far. Clients deliver to us at the moment. In the future we will be looking into picking up and delivering for our customers.” Leah and Neil both grew up in Fiji. Leah’s

father was the director of fisheries in Fiji and also owned and ran several pole and line fishing vessels. Neil’s father ran a large dairy farm in Fiji as well as a sawmill. “We live here now and want to give others the best opportunity for their stock and we believe our company provides that. We are looking forward to meeting new clients and working toward good things together.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Breeding

THE BEST BY AYLA MILLER

With five generations of farming and breeding knowledge behind him, Mark McKenzie knows a thing or two about cattle, and was the first person to recognise the potential of the Speckle Park breed in New Zealand, introducing them in 2007 via embryos from Canada.

H

e was later joined by Derek Hayward of Premier Cattle Company of Cambridge and together with the biggest breeder in the Southern Hemisphere, Dale Humphries of Wattle Grove in New South Wales, they represented the breed at the Northland Field Days, winning best new exhibitor and sparking an interest with Northland farmers. Among these were Raewyn and Warwick Mason who purchased a weaner breeding bull at the field days to cross with their short horns on their Waiotira and Waikiekie 2,500 hectare farm. “We have been farming for 40 years and are interested in different types of

breeds. We liked Speckle Park because they are a nice meaty breed and well rounded,” says Raewyn. “We have some Charolais Autumn heifer calves so he will go with them.” Speckle Park cattle are a pure Canadian breed made up of a combination of Red Roan Shorthorn, Angus and White Park and are known for being highly fertile, with high marbling meat and a quiet disposition amongst other desirable traits. “They are very adaptable beasts. We were blown away by how hardy they are. They flourish in very extreme environments from deep snow to 40 degree heat in Australia,” says Mark.

Dale Humphries, Derek Hayward and Mark McKenzie at their award winning Speckle Park exhibit during the Northland Field Days “They are a high yielding carcass cattle of up to 68 per cent with lots of trial data backing that up. They have also won carcass competitions around the world.” Mark and his wife Melissa currently run Maungahina Stud, the oldest Hereford Stud in New Zealand. The farm was established in 1907 and is made up of three properties. Maungahina stretches across 600 hectares of rolling hilly limestone country eight kilometres east of Masterton. Papariki is 50 hectares and the Miki Miki block is 200 hectares. In 2007 Mark made a trip to Canada where the unique speckled cattle caught his eye. After a rigorous inspection Mark was excited to find they were well structured, moderate framed and

soft, easy keeping cattle. After further research he found they were easily able to adapt to extreme climates whilst keeping a number of other ideal qualities and low fat cover. In 2013 Mark sold Derek some top Speckle Park cows and heifers and, by using an embryo programme, Derek increased his herd, making the two farmers the biggest Speckle Park breeders in New Zealand. Derek has been in the beef industry for more than 20 years and has worked in large studs in New Zealand and overseas. His stud, Premier Cattle Company, was founded in 2008 and in 2011 he sold out the Herefords and purchased the Speckle Park cows from Maungahina Stud. Not only are they easy keeping,

good mothers, with high fertility, they produce fine meat according to Mark and Derek. “We have been trialling the beef in butcher shops in Masterton. The meat is sensational and we are looking into tapping into the Auckland restaurant market,” Mark says. “The animals are desirable because of this marbled meat, tremendous hindquarters and they are high in muscle. It is usually very hard to find high muscle and marbling traits together in an animal,” says Mark. “We did trial works here in New Zealand and were blown away at how the progeny came out. “From there we have built up the best genetics from Canada and are calving close to 100 pure breeds a year.

March 2016

A visit to a lavender farm whilst on holiday sparked an idea for Belinda Gummer and Ray Dixon, and it wasn’t long before they were starting their own on their two-and-a-half acres of land in Dargaville.

W

e were thinking of options of to utilise our property to the best advantage,” said Belinda. “Our land isn’t big enough for livestock and we were trying to find ways to bring in extra income. I have always loved lavender and then I saw the results people get with their farms. I made a joke to Ray about starting our own and suddenly we were looking into the viability of it. “We have done a lot of research which was mostly online and we joined the New Zealand Lavender Association. “Lavender needs to be grown from a cutting rather than a seed — it is a

similar principal to propagating roses. Then you know you are getting the distinctive properties of the original plant. Some varieties are sterile while other hybridise through cross pollination. The plants like free draining soil and don’t like wet feet. We had to get the drainage correct and get a digger in to make large mounds for the plants to grow in, with wide trenches so they aren’t too close together. “We were going to use a kumara digger but they have too small a mound and are too close together. As our ground is flat we had to create drainage through contouring and mounding.”

Belinda Gummer and Ray Dixon are in the early stages of growing their Lavender farm in Dargaville

Once lavender is in the ground and established it is a very hardy plant and if it is well looked after it can grow and produce for up to 18 years. “We are in the beginning stages of the project and have planted 600 plants to start with. There is a three-year establishment period and it takes about a year for the first crop to be ready. “We are learning as we go and there are a few issues we are aware of such as rabbits coming and digging up the plants. We are also enjoying having our bee hives making honey. This is an exciting part of the adventure as well. It is amazing how quickly you end up with a hive full of honey. The bees certainly work hard. “There are many varieties of the plant and they have different smells. Some are very strong and others a more delicate, some are citrus and some have a camphor smell.” Belinda says that all the varieties are good for repelling flies, bugs and lice but prefers to use camphor smelling plants in the chicken coop. Lavender is good to plant with herbs and vegetables as it helps with insect control. The different fragrances are quite eye opening if you don’t realise what lavender varieties are

We are also enjoying having our bee hives making honey

Once established each plant can produce for 18 years if cared for correctly available. All the varieties are able to be used in cooking but some have a stronger flavour than others. Belinda and Ray have another small block of 26 plants they have grown specifically for culinary use. “We are looking forward to making oils and have ideas such as opening the fields up for tourists and photographers. Lavender is so beautiful in photo shoots and wedding photos. We believe this will be a great draw card for people to come to the Kaipara and Northland.” “As I have my Bindy Massage and Body Care business I am hoping to use the oil and make products to turn my company into more of a boutique. Lavender oil used in a diffuser is a great relaxant for stress. We have lived here for three years now. We both grew up

A new way to farm

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

For Agrissentials these are positive times, as farmers look for alternative methods to help reduce their on-farm costs. Now the most cost effective move to begin with is to start fixing your nitrogen requirements directly out of the atmosphere, with the help of soil microorganisms and start storing that nitrogen in the organic matter of the soil, courtesy of the soil biology. The best thing about this atmospheric nitrogen is that it is completely natural; it is there for the taking, it is environmentally friendly and it has no cost factor. Plus it has the added advantage of regenerating clover growth

in your pasture. The clover seeds are sitting in your soil ready to germinate. (Note In the presence of artificial nitrogen, clover is negated — Dr Barry Commoner’s book The Closing Circle). Although some consultants say that it is impossible to fix atmospheric nitrogen, one has to wonder how plants have managed to do it for the past 460 million years. The natural forests, jungles, savannahs and the oldest farm on the planet, the Serengeti Plains have always fixed not

only nitrogen but also gaseous elements, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and oxygen straight out of the atmosphere. These four gaseous elements make up 97.5 per cent of the plant’s mineral requirement. The 2.5 per cent of minerals are made up of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, magnesium, sodium, silica, iron, manganese, boron, copper, zinc, cobalt, molybdenum and selenium all in a completely natural form, recognised at the cellular level for plant growth and development. These are the essential minerals for life. Soil and water are the two most precious elements on our planet; without these two wonderful products, life cannot exist. According to Doctor Morgan Williams’ report to the government in 2004, we are losing between 200–300 million tonnes of topsoil each year. If we continue at this rate we will lose the topsoil we rely on to furnish our income. Chemical production is not in line with today’s consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food. It is a good time to make a switch to a more lucrative market. Agrissentials was born

out of a need to produce better quality food, to regenerate and remineralise soil and take care of our environment. It’s a simple, uncomplicated system which recycles all waste on the farm, back into topsoil, building humus in the soil, which not only holds the minerals but increases water retention capacity in the soil, helping farmers increase production and giving them a live, living soil that will keep them farming through those dry drought periods. The new consumer is crying out for safe certified food and it’s not just a fad; it’s a reality — people want top quality food. New Zealand with its isolation, its enviable farming status and its clean green image is well positioned to take advantage of this golden opportunity. Agrissentials can take you there. RETIREMENT Consider all the options Farming succession is one of the industry’s biggest challenges and a North Island sheep and beef farmer turned agribusiness advisor is encouraging farm owners to explore all of the options before retirement and settling on a succession plan. After two decades farming, Sean Bennett joined accounting firm Crowe Horwath and points out that the average age of a New Zealand farm owner is marching steadily towards 60, and the forecast capital required to replace their exit has been estimated at over NZ$60 billion. “It’s easy to see why there are widely held concerns,” says. “You have older farmers seeking to release capital for retirement, whilst the next generation are often struggling to raise enough to get themselves a foothold in the industry.” Bennett says those retiring want options that provide them with a reliable income that is inflation protected. Traditionally, the plan would have been to sell some or all of the assets to family members, or to outside interests through the traditional channels. However releasing all the farm equity for investment elsewhere might not be the optimal approach for farmers right now. “Farmers are currently exposed to historically low interest rates on cash

deposits, and many are either unfamiliar with or averse to the risks associated with higher return investments, such as shares or commercial property investments. “If these farm business owners were aware of alternate options to hold onto their asset base and earn an income from it, they may consider leaving their investment inside the business,” says Mr Bennett. On the other side of the succession tale, attracting the next generation into farming and providing pathways to farm ownership have been part of an ongoing battle for the industry. “We must create visible pathways for progression, together with a clear understanding of what makes these pathways successful. Providing support to connect individual parties is also a key component to ensuring an economically and socially successful generational transition occurs.” Outside of selling or otherwise divesting the farming business assets, Bennett encourages farmers to explore

the following available options: • equity partnerships • profit sharing • traditional leasing • modern leasing, where the lease cost is linked to commodity prices • wages plus performancebased incentives. “When done well, these options allow the farming business to generate retirement income and retain key staff, whilst providing young people with the opportunity to progressively gain management control and get rewarded for achieving results.”

When the cash flow tightens what do we focus on to grow grass?

See our advert on Pg.5

Times are tough, cash flow-wise for dairy farmers but we still need to grow grass to feed our cash flow manufacturers — the cow. So how do we do this and not run our soils into a situation where we drain them of their blood and soul? The best way to monitor this is to watch the soil’s ERGS readings. This sole reading tells the grower/consultant how much energy is in the soil for crop production whether you are growing kiwifruit, citrus or pasture. So how do we measure this and what do the readings mean. First ERGS stands for ‘energy release grams per second’ so a fancy name for the energy in the soil available for plant growth. If growing maize and filling cobs we want the reading at 600, growing pasture we want the reading at 200 — at this level we know we have our soil delivering enough energy to the plant to grow grass-based swards at their potential. So what happens when we get readings of 30–70? The pasture is slowing down because there is only enough energy to grow at a slower rate compared to a soil with a reading of 200. If the soil reading is around 200 then you could consider using a high energy foliar feed — but make sure it is a high energy foliar feed and not just a fine lime, dolomite or RPR based mix as these

have merits, but do not deliver the high energy impact you are looking for. So how do we fix this and what are the usual problems when the readings are starting to drop below 200? When we get readings of 30-70 it is really noticeable on farm that pasture/crop growth is slowing. The main problem is the nitrogen cycle and soil nitrate and ammonium-nitrogen levels are exceedingly low. So yes we need some nitrogen but this is where we hit the cross roads and the smart informed grower uses a combination of nitrogen based products coated with carbon and accompanied by soluble calcium, and the more traditional grower just plasters on straight urea. The trouble with putting straight urea on is you only get 50% utilisation of the nitrogen applied — seems like a big waste of money to throw away. There is screeds of international soil fertiliser trial documentation saying that this practice is a waste of money and hard on the environment. What the international soil trials are saying — is that using the correct combinations of minerals, carbon and calcium with nitrogen — the grower can achieve exceptional nitrogen responses per unit of applied nitrogen and minimise the impact on the soil and environment. Not only do you get better nitrogen response but the quality of the

final grass /crop grown is superior. We at Environmental Fertilisers have over the last five years developed a number of soil fertiliser combinations for both conventional and organic growers to use. www.ef.net-search Bio-Rocket [conventional/biological grower] or Natures-Nitro [organic certified] To get a soil energy reading done, send a soil sample to: BIO-Services, P. Steady market for grazing land It was great to see so many cheerful familiar faces passing our Farmlands Real Estate stand at the Field Days. Good grass growth and cow condition are helping dairy farmers through a tough time and beef farmers are also enjoying the wet Summer. We received good enquiry for farms of both types — but especially for grazing farms in the Kaipara area over 50 hectares in size, with or without a dwelling. There is a steady demand for grazing land in Northland. The latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand statistics show 54 sales of grazing farms in Northland since June 1 last year. The average sale price of those sales was a bit over $8,700 per hectare, ranging from $3,000 to $23,000. This is up 22 per cent on the same period last season — in fact it is the highest number of sales in the past five years. The price per hectare depends on location and productive capacity and also how the property was marketed. It is common for many farms to sit on the market for months or even years — and

buyers generally expect to pay less the longer it is on the market. The best chance of a sale is within the first four to six weeks on the market. How the farm is presented to the market does have a big effect on its chance of selling — excellent presentation is a must. It takes great photos, a strong marketing campaign and a proactive effort by your agent. It gives me quite a buzz when it all works out well. When building from the ground up it’s easy these days to specify topgrade insulation on all sides, solar water heating, powerful heat pump air conditioners or even piped underfloor heating. But when it comes time to renovate an existing home, the choices can become more about compromise with design and aesthetics than about the pure physics of heat in and out. Seeing as heating makes up on average one third of a Kiwi family’s annual energy budget (with hot water a close second place), picking the right combination of investments is the key to a lower energy bill, across both electricity and combustibles like wood. The first step is to ensure your home is insulated — and that your hot water system is thermally lagged, along with as much pipework as possible. Often, homeowners ask if they should choose either underfloor insulation or more batts in the roof space — the real answer is ‘both’. Think of the home

like a chilly bin — the ideal situation involves complete coverage. But hot air rises and is easily lost through a poorly insulated roof. Many people have not checked the state of their ceiling insulation for years, and it may have degraded into virtual uselessness. The second stage to make sure your home is dry. Damp breeds mould, and that means respiratory disease — laws have been proposed to force landlords to address black mould issues before they can accept rent from tenants. Thankfully, air movement can rid the home of most mould-forming conditions. Pipe out moisture laden kitchen and bathroom air with ducted fans, and if your home suffers from condensation, damaging wooden fixtures and window sills, consider a whole-home

dehumidifier, in the form of a positive pressure in-ceiling ventilation unit. Warmth completes the picture — health authorities indicate that living areas should not be below 18 degrees Celsius and bedroom should not dip below 16. While a 5 kilowatt or larger heat pump is perfect for most living rooms, multiple smaller units may prove costly for each bedroom, so economical panel night-store heaters are also a popular choice. For those with a fireplace, that ceiling space can be put to work, housing the insulated ducts of a heat transfer unit which takes heat trapped near the ceiling and pipes it through to each bedroom. Working together, insulation, ventilation and heating promote good health, better sleep and a more valuable home when it comes time to sell!

Clean solutions to messy problems Every home generates waste — after all, it’s a biological necessity, even if it isn’t a topic of dinner party conversation, and while New Zealand’s building rules state that if a municipal sewer connection is available, it must be used by a new build, options abound for those constructing or renovating in areas where civic infrastructure does not reach. Many people will be aware of the old fashioned septic tank system — a single large tank, usually concrete, into which waste material are piped from the home’s conveniences. A single stage of decomposition happens inside over a period of time, using the power of anaerobic bacteria, and the liquid runoff is often noticeable by a very green and lush patch of paddock ‘downstream’. The solid waste must be pumped out on a regular basis to ensure that the whole process literally flows smoothly, and the little bacteria continue munching through nasties down in the dark. Modern systems may utilize two chambers, with a second phase of treatment activated by aerobic bacteria. These tiny creatures thrive on completely different materials and conditions to their anaerobic cousins, further breaking down waste and providing much safer runoff. As this all eventually ends up in the groundwater, some forwardthinking councils have already made it compulsory for new systems to have more than one tank. While some may have three or four, any number over and above one is best

practice. There are even means to expand existing single-tank anaerobic systems with a second aerobic bacteria powered tank. When planning a new septic system, remember that an average New Zealander uses 160–250 litres of water a day. Take into account the fact that your family might grow, or that holiday periods may see an influx of guests. A small system may very well prove to be false economy if it becomes overloaded, meaning more maintenance and the need to pump out solid waste more often. No matter which way you go, you will require building consent, and will have to comply with your local council’s bylaws about not just the system itself, but the runoff and soakage area where liquid waste, once treated, is returned to the soil. Native plants and water-loving species like reeds and marsh grasses will help turn the runoff into additional growth, or to evaporate. Growing trees over this area, however, can prove disastrous, as their roots can disrupt pipes and even crack tanks. There are a vast range of eco-friendly

options available today to replace the old septic tank of yesteryear. Plan well, and consult with your local plumbing

and drainlaying professionals to ensure a system that remains hassle free for decades to come.

But contemplating moving in needs to be balanced with some practicality. It is a time also to be most careful. There is the builder to pay out but before you call the moving company. You need a code compliance certificate, CCC — a formal statement issued under section 95 of the Building Act, that construction carried out under a building consent complies with that document. It can also affect financial considerations as a mortgage holder will need to be satisfied that finance is properly secured over the property. Homeowners need to be happy that their builder will complete any oversights that a compliance certificate may identify. Ask the builder for a clear council inspection showing your home has passed, or that the items outstanding are of a minor nature. The certificate

also underpins the value of your new build. Construction finance company NewBuild advises that ‘in today’s environment, having a CCC is like gold, so do not compromise anything to ensure you receive this certificate. If you don’t get one, the value of your home could fall dramatically. ‘To take possession you must have accomplished the following: ‘Your valuer must revisit the home and declare it finished and also advise what, if any, work is incomplete; ‘You may want to complete your driveway later, but if your valuer has included this in his original valuation, then the home will be deemed incomplete; ‘The CCC comes from the council, and is normally sought by the builder, but it is obviously important for the client to be aware of the process;

‘NewBuild recommends you plan on taking possession several days after the council inspector provides a clear field inspection to avoid that unnecessary “mad rush” and stress at hand over’. And there is the vital matter of insurance. ‘You must arrange to have homeowner’s insurance cover in place because your builder’s cover normally expires at the time you start putting your belongings into the new home. Caution here, once you start putting personal items in the home, even if the home is not quite finished, your builder’s insurance — Builders Risk Cover — may not protect your belongings, and in fact may not cover the house. ‘So give yourself a week before handover to review the final invoice, and don’t allow this to be left to the last minute’.

First things first The architects have sent in the bill for the plans for the new build, and your wishes have been faithfully incorporated in the the the blueprint and the section has been signed up. But before the hammer hits the first nail of course, there is the matter of a building consent. This is quite simply, permission to build a structure with the assurance that it complies with the rules and your first stop is your local council to obtain the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority that certain works meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. Some minor work is exempt under the Act, but consent is required for most work, including of course, new buildings. However the consent also applies to a wider range of construction including the following: • swimming pools, spa pools and fencing,·retaining walls over 1.5 metres (no surcharge) • retaining walls any height incurring a surcharge • decks over 1.5 metres high • pergolas attached to buildings • free-standing non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres • plumbing and drainage work • demolition • relocation of buildings • additions, alterations to existing buildings • change of use (may include an increase in occupant numbers)

• heating including fireplaces • ventilation and air-conditioning systems (commercial) • small dams (more than 35,000 litres of water) Consents can be organised online with application forms that can be obtained from council’s websites or from offices, and these are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. All building work should be completed within two years from the date that the building consent was granted. Building consent applications can be complex — councils recommend that you engage a professional person to help with design work and drawings. Fixed fees are available for some types of applications. If your project does not meet the fixed fee criteria, the cost will depend on things like the type of application, cost of work involved and the level of detail provided. Council’s charges are listed on their websites and are based on the length of time it takes to process an application. An estimate of the fees involved may be provided, however the final cost will not be known until the application is processed. When your application is ready for issue and all fees are paid, your building consent will be posted, or sent electronically to the contact person nominated on the application form.

Practical tips to revive your decking by Andy Bryenton

Salt air, sun, dirt and mould can give Kiwi decks a hammering. But it’s easy to restore a beautiful finish to your outdoor spaces, increasing the value of your home and adding years of life to tired timbers. The first place to begin is cleaning the deck surface — a process which can be achieved with or without chemicals. Debate among deck afficionados still rages as to whether using a simple electric waterblaster or chemical treatments is best. Some say that a water blaster can damage the fibres of the wood, while those who prefer the blaster counter that chemical treatments can kill off more than just filth and mould. A favourite option is a low-pressure washdown with a water blaster or a hose and brush, followed by the use of an oxygen based ‘one hour cleaner’ designed specifically for moss and mould. Never use the kind of high

powered water blaster you’d employ on concrete, or to strip mud and dirt from under your 4x4 — these really can ruin the integrity of the deck and ruin the grain of the timber. Next, rinse and let your deck dry. The next step will be to add ‘wood brighteners’ — spray on chemicals which open up the wood like the pores in your skin and allow the next step — the stain — to really penetrate and protect. Rinse and dry again before assembling your tools to get the stain on. Remember to cover areas which you don’t want affected by over-coverage or splatters — even the most careful applicator will inevitably make small

mistakes and it’s easier to cover than to clean. All the top renovators agree — when it comes to timber stains you get what you pay for. A trip to your local paint shop will help you get the right product for a beautiful result — take some simple info with you in the form of your deck’s area, location, intended uses and the type of wood from which it’s built. remember that less can be more. Only apply as much stain as the wood can take, because to use more isn’t just wasteful, it can also cause a shiny or waxy layer which peels after just one or two seasons. Work in between the boards with a paintbrush for complete coverage — and let your deck ‘rest’ for about 24 hours before cracking out the barbecue and inviting guests to appreciate your work!

Taking power prices off the boil

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

Every home uses hot water — for cooking and cleaning, in the laundry and bathroom — sometimes even just as a form of relaxation after a long day’s work. But does this most civilized of luxuries have to come with such a steep price? It’s estimated that up to a third of the energy expenditure in some homes comes direct from the hot water boiler. This is especially true in colder climates, in homes with big families, and in situations where the old trusty hot water cylinder has been serving duty for more than a decade or two. Add up that combination and little inefficiencies and demands can add up to big bucks — along with a great excuse to invest in new technology. The easiest way to cut hot water heating bills without the expense of full replacement is to turn down the master heating dial on the cylinder itself. Many are set so high that hot water from the tap is not just painful to touch, but dangerous. Drop the temperature, then ensure that as much copper pipework as possible is lagged, with the cylinder itself wrapped to prevent heat loss. Many homes still maintain a large, family-sized cylinder even after the kids have left to make their own way in the world. This is the perfect situation to regain some cupboard pace and install a gas califont — an instant heating system which only provides hot water exactly when it is needed. Califonts are best deployed in situations where they won’t be in massive demand, like households of two or three people, and

are powered by gas — so a good reliable delivery service is also something to investigate. The same technology used in moder n refrigerators and air conditioners can both heat and cool. That heating phase is perfect for heating up lots of water at once, so those in the opposite situation to califont users — large families, or even guest houses and motels — should look into heat pump hot water systems. While they are electric, like a traditional boiler, they do away with a costly element and instead employ a heat exchanger for maximum cost savings over time. And they can often be retrofitted to an existing cylinder, using it as a storage tank. Perhaps the ultimate solution though, is to let the sun take up some of the burden of heating your home. Even on cold or cloudy days the sun has the power to warm the entire planet, and modern solar hot water systems are far more efficient in harnessing that power

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

The sharpest in the shed by Andy Bryenton

When it comes time to manage pasture and ensure the best conditions for winter success on the farm, there are a wide range of implements available to get the job done. Whether it’s deep aeration to let the soil breathe, the turning of stubble into forage, or even re-seeding, even the most advanced agricultural tools are only as good as the machine which gives them mobility and power. Enter the multi-purpose weapon of choice for open field farming — a tractor designed just for the task of picking up and running with any of today’s high power implements. Deutz Fahr’s 5 series landed at Mystery Creek in 2015, and the mid-horsepower machines in

green have been favourites around the country since that inception, gaining accolades for their ease of use and driver comfort. Because, of course, it’s not just the tractor which must put in long hours and hard yards at pasture renewal time — it’s the pair of hands behind the wheel as well. At the heart of it all is an engine small enough to offer good fuel economy, but powerful enough to drive not just those big wheels, but anything which can be yoked to the PTO for work, The Tier 4i compliant, 3620 cm³, four-cylinder DEUTZ TCD 3.6 L04 engine features a turbocharger with an intercooler for forced induction, and common rail fuel injection. Tier 4i compliance was achieved by adopting a clever exhaust gas recirculation system in conjunction with a special DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) catalytic converter, which catalyses chemical reactions within the exhaust gases on contact to transform them into harmless substances. A flat torque curve in the vital 1,200–1,900 rpm band leaves a hearty 30 per cent of torque available when its needed.

While all that power from a mid-HP tractor is just what the doctor ordered when hooking up to modern harrows and cultivators, the aforementioned ease of use and operator comfort is what really makes the 5 series stand tall. Deutz Fahr have even enlisted the help of legendary car designers Giugiaro design to ensure air-conditioned comfort and ergonomic placement of all the controls needed for a hard day’s work. Their other notable marques as well as the 5 series tractor? Try Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Lotus, and even the iconic 1980s Delorean.

There’s even the option to have the entire cab independently sprung for a smooth ride over bumpy terrain, and computer readouts which allow multicommand sequences to be stored and chained together at the touch of a button. When pasture management season is over — at least, for a short time — there will always be other tools of the trade which need the mobility and power of a good reliable tractor. Deutz Fahr may not produce the rollers, aerators and seed drills which actually meet the soil — but they have created what may be the best way to deploy them.

Coping with winter rains Winter feed is an annual farming challenge, and heading into autumn is time to consider preventive measures to insure optimum pastures. Good ground conditions are vital so having efficient drainage systems in susceptible paddocks will ensure that the paddocks remain wet for the shortest possible time as the winter rains set in. Good drainage will also offset the prevalence of stock pugging the soil, although even the best drained pasture will suffer from damage during heavy rains. As in all things farming, it will pay to discuss and compare local conditions with stock advisors, neighbours and other interested parties to get the best information on specific soil types and contours. Coping with hill runoff can best be done with open or pipe drains that intercept the cascades and as a barrier moat this reduces the need for more drainage and excavation further into the pasture land itself. All open drains should be fenced from stock to improve water quality and reduce drain maintenance. However, it is not essential that all areas on the farm need to be drained, and drainage is not always cost-effective when ongoing maintenance is required because peatland, as well as springs, swamp areas and soaks perform this draining function as nature intended. Good farming practice will see these natural drains well fenced from stock and they reduce flood flows, and also act as nitrogen filters before the run-off enters other larger waterways. One solution to poor drainage on flat land is mole drains. Ground that is too wet for cultivating or subsoiling may still be suitable for moling. In cases of heavy ground surface pugging, re-draining may be necessary and a key element is having an efficient outlet flow to speed the unwanted water

northernfarming.co.nz

on its way. Where connecting moles to a pipe system, the pipes should be installed first and the mole drains pulled afterwards. With any subsurface drainage, there is an increased risk of polluted water draining from paddocks through the soil into the drains and then flowing into waterways at the discharge point. This type of discharge by-passes the filtering effects of riparian areas so avoiding any effluent irrigation over the affected pasture is of top importance. If it is at all necessary it should be kept to a minimum. Irrigation should only occur in dry conditions. Even when there is efficient drainage, stock access should still be managed to avoid concentrated use when the soil is wet — spell the paddock for a day after the rain has fallen. As a final management solution, consider creating, and in fact planting an artificial wetland at the drainage exit point as a means of filtering runoff before it makes it’s way into a natural waterway on or off the property.

DAIRY

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

In every sector of society we see the emergence of growth industries. These new industries are usually triggered by a problem which needs addressing. In 2008 a Nationwide drought saw the need to bring in feed from offshore. Thus began the Palm Kernel Expeler (PKE) market and it caught on like a match thrown into a haystack. 330% growth since 2008. Yes, there was demand at that time and it necessarily filled a feed deficit when nothing else could. Yet since that time, farmers have become addicted to using it. Ships have been assigned to bring it into New Zealand. Massive storage sheds have been erected and a transport industry has grown to cope with the demand. Farmers have even built PK Bunkers to store it. All this, in spite of the years of good weather since 2008. Why? Three reasons. First, feeding animals with PK is convenient. Second, it’s relatively cheap. And finally, due to a steady stream of sales pitches from socalled experts, we’ve come to believe that using PK is all benefits with no down sides. But that isn’t true.

Here’s a fact that might make us all think twice us about over-using PK. Analysis has shown that the digestibility of PKE is 52%. That means that if a farmer buys 100 tonne of PK at $250 per tonne ($25,000), his cows will only utilise 52 tonne of that feed. Only half of that feed investment will go towards animal health. Only half will end up contributing to money in the vat. Where does the remaining 48 tonne of unused PK go? It either ends up on the ground or in your effluent pond. After examining hundreds of ponds throughout the country, we have established that the crust and sludge is mostly undigested PK. High users of PKE have a distinguishably browner colour to their effluent arising from the increasing amounts of sludge buildup. What are the unseen costs of PK? Tangibly, there is the cost of excavation which farmers are forced to carry out when sludge builds up to critical levels. Then there are the less obvious costs.

Pond crust gone for 10th the cost?

True!

Going back to our ‘who pays $250 per tonne for PKE’ — what he’s actually paying is $480 per tonne of usable feed since 48% of PKE is indigestible. When you also consider that any increase in production only affects the fat portion of your milk solids AND do a full add-up of associated costs, it may be that other people are making the profit out of this PKE growth industry, not the farmer.

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

DAIRY FARMERS We can solve all your milk cooling and pre cooling with safe and energy efficient solutions

Is there a better way? Let’s contrast the PK approach with a basic all-grass system. In an all-grass system, biological activity naturally produces the correct enzymes to help the cow digest the feed she eats. Studies show that cows are able to digest and utilise 80% of grass feed. That means tonnes more food goes into animal health and vat profits, and tonnes less ends up in your pond. Makes sense?

DAIRY & COMPLIANCE

Investing in compliance infrastructure by Andy Bryenton

With a new year in farming comes a new round of tougher measures for environmental protection. And, even as debate rages about the practicality of implementing such measures during a ‘slump’ in global dairy prices, the call to further protect the environment is being heard. Despite the low payout forecasted by dairy giant Fonterra, recent news articles about excluding cattle from waterways have thrown the entire compliance issue into stark perspective. What price, ask some pundits, our clean green image, if the very industry it supports crumbles under a weight of red tape and debt for its implementation? As in any industry, standards and practices are there to ensure a balanced and equitable relationship between the producer and supplier, with guarantees of quality enforced, in this case, for the best of reasons — the health not only of consumers, but of New Zealand’s reputation as a top-grade exporter. Thus, farmers are still investing in the important equipment which allows them to run a modern, healthy and qualitycontrolled operation, whether in dairy, dry stock or even in cropping. Fonterra walk the line this season between ensuring global standards of excellence in their finished product, and

ensuring that their key shareholders, the farmers working at the ‘coalface’ of production, are financially secure. No matter the barometer of global trade, and TPPA notwithstanding, the rules for standards of hygiene and the temperature of vats and chillers are unwavering. It’s not just the equipment in and around the milking shed which must meet new standards. As an example of wider requirements, Fonterra now requires new, repaired, or structurally upgraded tanker roadway bridges or crossings to be certified to at least 53 tonne, allowing safe access for their fleet. Waterways must be fenced to ensure environmental standards are met, with results in stream and river purity already being felt in the Waikato and beyond as a result. On the flip side, some rivers have been closed to swimming and fishing this year due to unintentional

runoff, putting water purity in the headlines. The incursion of cattle into rivers and lakes has prompted calls for harsh fines, and renewed the debate over fencing waterways entirely. These factors, along with the machinery required to hygienically wash down milking sheds and equipment, and the modern milking systems needed to cut back on ills like mastitis, mean that, season after season, the backbone infrastructure of farms must be kept in good shape, no matter what mother nature or global commerce throw at us. A good example is the robust new

systems used to treat dairy effluent — systems which turn what was once an odious problem into a potential source of fertiliser and nutrients. In this arena, farmers have been able to work innovatively within the framework of environmental protective laws to find a sustainable way forward. With the trend toward global free trade pushing further regulation and more exacting measures to ensure milk and meat quality, keeping these vital infrastructural systems at peak efficiency would seem a wise choice, this season as in any other.

Vat cooling under control Chill Technology Ltd in Whangarei are leading specialists in Farm Vat Cooling, and have been servicing Northland dairy farms for nearly 20 years. They have now started supplying and installing Daikin Inverter Scroll Water Chillers that do an impressive job at chilling milk down to the soon to be required MPI Milk Cooling standards. Daikin water chillers are not new technology, and have already been successfully implemented in the wine, stone and pip fruit industries as well as the air conditioning arena for many years. Northland Farmer and Chilltech customer Greig Alexander is impressed with his new Daikin system “the milk is going into the vat cold which is the biggest thing – and it’s drawing very little power which is fantastic”. The highly efficient Daikin system with its Leader-OfClass energy efficiency, minimal starting current and short payback time makes this system unique.

With the inclusion of the Inverter Scroll Compressor which not only provides a soft start but also the ability to ‘over speed’ for peaks in production means that the system matches its performance with the required demand that is placed on it. If you’re considering an upgrade to your farm vat pre cooling system, get in touch with Richard Crum, Director of Chilltech, their team is geared up with information about the impending changes, how to implement a new system with your current chilling system and will happily recommend the right system for the requirements of your farm. Don’t get overwhelmed by all of the information out there on the new regulations, they’re happy to point you in the right direction.

HUNTING & FISHING

25

Duck-hunting season looms With May and the duck-hunting season just a few short weeks away, it is time for seasoned duck-shooters to start checking their gear, while for others, it may be a first-time chance at putting wildfowl on the table. Fish and Game NZ is a good place to start, and says that with our increasingly urbanised society, more and more would-be hunters don’t have the family or contacts to learn the skills or find the areas to be successful hunters. As a result, the organisation has tapped into a hunter training programme run by the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association. The hunter national training scheme — known as Hunts — introduces new hunters to the skills and knowledge to be safe and successful in our New Zealand outdoor environment and has an approved syllabus delivered throughout New Zealand by qualified and warranted instructors. Increasingly Fish and Game has contributed to the courses with game bird hunting content on equipment, technique and places to hunt. It reinforces NZDA’s emphasis on ethical and lawful hunting with an introduction to Fish and Game’s Hunting Guidelines and Game Bird Regulations. The course covers legal, ethical and environmental responsibilities, hunting equipment and food, bushcraft and navigation and firearm safety, selection and marksmanship, among other relevant subjects.

There are six species of waterfowl targeted. They are mallard, paradise, grey and shoveler duck, black swan and greater Canadian goose. In New Zealand it is compulsory to use non-toxic shot when hunting waterfowl with any gun using a 10 or 12 gauge cartridge for all areas, including private land, within 200m of a water body and wetlands. For most hunters this means using steel shot, although others such as bismuth and tungsten alloys are available. There are many who ask why the traditional lead shot has been banned near waterways and the answer is embedded in the principle of conservation — pure and simple. Lead shot has been banned or restricted in many parts of the world for many years because it has been shown to poison ducks that accidentally eat it as grit. Studies showed that New Zealand was no different to other countries that had already switched to non-toxic shot before. The government made the decision to go non-toxic, and requested Fish and Game to implement a staged and progressive introduction of non-toxic shot provisions several years ago. The ban does not apply to inland game birds such as pheasants or quail. CAPE REINGA VIA 90 MILE BEACH & 4X4 TOURS

Caring for animals

The Ministry of Primary Industries has begun an advertising campaign encouraging people to let it know if they come across the mistreatment of livestock. “The vast majority of livestock owners care for their animals, but there is a very small minority who don’t, and they let the rest down,” says MPI’s deputy Director General of Regulation and Assurance, Scott Gallacher. “We saw from the response to last year’s allegations of bobby calf abuse just how much farmers care. There was a pretty clear voice from the farming community that animal abuse is not on. We agree, and we want to work with farmers and other livestock owners to do something about it to ensure that any abuse is identified and acted on.” The adver tisements encourage people to let MPI know if they see things that don’t look right, and how to do that. “MPI places a high priority on animal welfare. We know it’s important to people, it’s clearly important to the animals and it’s important to New Zealand’s reputation. When we get information about mistreatment of animals, we investigate. When there is offending, people are held to account.”

MPI’s deputy Director General of Regulation and Assurance, Scott Gallacher

People who become aware of potential livestock abuse can call MPI confidentially on 0800 00 83 33. MPI has broad responsibility for managing animal welfare compliance in relation to livestock and other animals used for commercial purposes. The SPCA manages compliance in relation to companion (pet) animals.

Soil Matters with Peter Burton Magnesium — the basis of good farm health

Operating from Parua Bay

The last dolomite article contained the quote by the late Tom Walker, a past Emeritus Professor of Soil Science at Lincoln University, ‘It makes good sense to me to correct animal deficiencies through the soil and the plant’. When animal deficiencies are corrected in this way, not only is animal performance enhanced, soil health and subsequent pasture performance also improve. There is now a growing awareness of the inexorable link between soil, plant, and animal health. Persistent animal health issues in spring are a symptom of less than ideal soil health, and supplementing cows with magnesium via water troughs or dusting is little more than a temporary quick fix. By addressing the real issue, the availability of magnesium for plant uptake, plant and animal performance lifts, costs come down, and the frustration of not knowing when the next animal will require attention rapidly diminishes. In our experience the only fail-safe way of doing this is by an annual application of Golden Bay dolomite. It may be applied at any time during the year. However, with the greatest demand time for magnesium being prior to calving, autumn is the ideal time to apply. Animal systems are unable to efficiently store magnesium, so it is essential that sufficient is eaten each day to meet their demand. The obvious and most effective way of doing this is to ensure that every mouthful of pasture contains a healthy amount of magnesium. Last autumn a property, with a history of numerous severe and persistent calcium/magnesium related metabolic disorders in spring, applied a fertiliser mix containing 217kg/ha of dolomite, which applied 25kg/ha of magnesium. Calving in spring was largely trouble free, with only a handful of animals requiring treatment, and all responding rapidly. A marked and welcome change for a farmer in a district where severe

metabolic problems are regarded as normal. This is only one of many instances reported over the twenty eight years of supplying dolomite to intensive high performing dairy properties, and the reasons for the outstanding performance are now well documented and understood. Trial work conducted at Massey University on magnesium fertilisers highlighted the superior performance of dolomite in lifting Soil Exchangeable Magnesium, when compared with other magnesium products currently available. Dolomite is naturally occurring carbonate rock, different from limestone in that it contains 11.5% magnesium, and 24% calcium, compared to around 35% calcium and no magnesium in high quality agricultural lime. Fineness of grinding of dolomite is a key to the almost immediate lift in the magnesium content of pastures, and the subsequent improvement in animal demeanour and overall health. Animals with sufficient magnesium in their diet become content and increasingly docile, making yarding and handling an easier and more pleasurable activity. Magnesium also aids the uptake of phosphorus by plants. An important factor to bear in mind when deciding on nutrient inputs this autumn. Having a pH modifying, or ‘liming’, effect greater than limestone, means that where soil calcium and pH levels are already generally adequate, dolomite is an ideal maintenance product. The outstanding improvement in overall animal health and performance may not be solely attributed to the magnesium and calcium content of dolomite. The Golden Bay deposit was initially a seabed deposit and, as a result, also contains a wide range of

27

essential trace elements and minerals. As soils weather over time, mineral content of the topsoil is steadily lost. Although only present in very small amounts, the boron, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc contained in dolomite will be beneficial, particularly on soils where those elements are deficient. There are very few pastoral situations where more than 220kg/ha (25kgMg/ ha) of dolomite is required to obtain the animal health and performance benefits discussed. At this rate a truck and trailer load of 28 tonnes is sufficient for 127ha. Dolomite is available nation-wide and, if not in stock at your local fertiliser supplier, it can be delivered within a few days. It may be mixed with any nonnitrogen fertiliser product or applied separately at any time, as the only effect on animals eating it is beneficial. For more information call Peter on 0800 4Dolomite (0800 436 566).

Orchard mowing made easy

An innovative mower-mulcher designed in Japan is proving a boon in New Zealand orchards, with a low profile and weight enabling efficient between-tree clearances. With more and more avocado orchards adopting closer planting grids, the physical space for mowing equipment to fit has become greatly reduced, especially once the trees are established. The Canycom is a speciality low profile mower/mulcher engineered to get the operator as low as possible to the ground whilst still enabling a cutting height range of 0 to 150mm. Used in apple orchards in Japan and in vineyards and nut farms around the world, the machines offer low profile mowing and their ease of use and safety on slopes leads them to be able to be used by even inexperienced operators. The mower features a drive shaftdriven 4WD and cutting deck, Unimog style front axles, industrial cast iron

bore engines and Katana, or Samurai Steel, cutting blades. It is capable of also mulching prunings up to 60mm in diameter. It replaces conventional orchard tractors unable to pass down rows without damaging the fruit and foliage. Orchard tractors are also typically heavy and can cause damage to the delicate shallow root structure of avocado trees. This root damage from tractors is especially evident in winter when the ground softens and the wheels of the heavy machines sink lower into the soil. Orchard mowers also need to be tough enough to handle thick heavy grass and the Canycom can handle wet/ slippery ground for year-round mowing. For more information visit www. canycomX.com.

Fresh start for a new year by Andy Bryenton

With farmers seeking economical options and eschewing needless luxury on their working rolling stock, it’s nice to see a new model in the ATV market which does not at all seem like a compromise. Introduced just a year ago, the Can Am L series of off-road machines represented an entry level into to the popular brand. Now, after 12 months of feedback from customers worldwide, Can Am have sharpened up the L series into something even more practical — offering new engines with more power, more towing capacity, more rack space and the option to jump into a ‘fully loaded’ model right off the showroom floor. The updated Outlander L series is led up by the 570 for 2016 — a powerful addition to the range. With a brand new 48 horsepower Rotax v-twin providing the get up and go, the 570 is a step up from the single-piston 430 which is also available to L riders. With eight valves and a classically ‘bulletproof’ single overhead cam system, the new Rotax gains faster acceleration without compromising top end speed. Petrolhead purists will appreciate how this has been achieved — not through

computer tinkering, but by beefing up the size of the pistons and lengthening the stroke. It’s old-school engineering, but it works perfectly at the heart of what is assuredly a multi-functional tool on the farm. Combine that new mill with tried and tested torsional trailing arms at the back and independent A-arms at the front — plus a healthy ride height — and there is not much the L 570 can’t slog through. It’ll attack the paddocks towing 590kgs, with a further 163 onboard. That’s plus a full-sized rider — so it’s a good thing that Can Am have fitted out their new model with their proprietary Visco-lok automatically locking front diff for acres of grip. A popular choice for those interested in taking the L 570 to work is the option of an ‘LE’ package — a collection of ‘most wanted’ optional extras bundled together to further reduce costs. Notably, this package includes Can Am’s tri-mode power steering, along with upgrades such as beefier front and rear

BUSINESS PROFILE

Extending machinery life Eddie and Joanne Hayes of Kaipara Fuel Polishers opened for business on Tuesday, March 1 and are based in Ruawai. ”I drove trucks for 12 years and we moved to Ruawai from the Waikato 12 months ago after years of moving around for work. We decided to start our own company as it was time to do something for ourselves. I have worked on farms and farm machinery and driven trucks all my life,” said Eddie. “My background has always been in machinery operating and driving. With this comes the experience of fixing things. I saw a gap in the market and new equipment coming out so I imported the machine from America for Fuel Polishing.” The fuel polishing unit is a Parker DFC Filtration Fuel Cart which has one of the best filtration systems. It cleans from a 25 micron water separator down to 10 micron polishing of the fuel. “With the 25 micron separator I get all the water and contaminants out of the tank and with the 10 micron we get a good final application of the polishing of the fuel. This is one of their latest designs in technology. Parker are well known worldwide. “Farming equipment easily gets contaminated if not looked after. Ensuring maintenance is kept up ultimately gives longer life.

Fuel polishing and diesel tank cleaning is an important part of the industry. When water gets into the tanks from condensation the tank gets a bug in it which blocks the fuel lines, injectors and other components. Polishing is filtering the fuel which removes the contaminants.” Eddie says the advantages for fuel polishing are many, including better performance, extending the life of equipment, and ultimately filtering can save the customer thousands of dollars. Petrol and diesel tanks can be cleaned and Eddie will travel anywhere necessary. The rates vary and Eddie also works on marine, forestry, house buses, RVs and other vehicles. “We clean fuel lines and change filters if necessary. The fuel polishing process works from the fuel tank to the first primary filter. Joanne runs the administration side of the business whilst Eddie looks after the physical side of things. “We love living in the Kaipara. The opportunities here are really good. The fishing is awesome and the people are great. Everything that we need is right here, it is a great place to start a business.”

Recharge — the message is getting through “Finally,” says Gerard Anselmi of Recharge the Battery Additive, “after 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia, the message is getting through. Don’t put Recharge in dead batteries, they are dead,” he says. “The big issue is every battery you buy is sulphated. Treat batteries early with Recharge, repeat the process every two years and keep batteries charged by backing up with a mains powered charge every six months or so and most batteries will go a long time — 10 years or more. Yes you will get some failing batteries back but not all so worth a go at $4 or $5 per car battery.” Anselmi says every show he and his wife Debbie do, and that is about one a week these days either in NZ or Australia, they get Recharge customers with batteries that are 10, 12 and 14-years-old and often still going. “I had a farmer at the Southland Field Days in Waimumu in February who told me he’d been using it for years and wasn’t sure but then took a battery out of a tractor that had just died and it was

17 years old so he figured it must have done something.” Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulfation build-up on internal lead plates, corroding the lead plates and compromising the batteries’ holding capacity,” and according to Gerard Anselmi, “most batteries are ready sulphated when you buy them so treating them early and keep them charged will prevent premature battery failure with the simple Recharge Battery Conditioning Programme. RECHARGE is available from Farmlands. The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70zz light commercial battery. A more cost effective 2-litre commercial pack is also available and can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net.nz or on

TradeMe. As RECHARGE is acid based it is dangerous goods and expensive to freight; the 2-litre bottle is therefore, the only one that we sell directly. The 2-litre pack treats 42 x N-70 batteries or 22 x N-150 truck batteries or about five sets of electric golf cart batteries, about $6,000 to $8,000 worth of batteries treated for $340 delivered. And yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell, treat and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries. “The big deep cycle batteries we get a very good result with,” says Anselmi, “they should go for a long time but usually don’t.”

1100 EFI NEW UPGRADE MODEL!!

A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, top up with water, treat, charge and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.
