Support for protection bill

3

Rural Women New Zealand are showing their support for Green party MP Jan Logie’s Domestic Violence — Victims’ Protection Bill that is before parliament and asks Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse and his fellow MPs to support the bill. “RWNZ believe that the bill will have an impact on people who are victims of domestic violence and help support them when they need to leave the relationship,” said Fiona Gower, RWNZ national president. The bill seeks to address harm experienced by victims, by focussing on how workplaces can be made a safer and more accommodating place for victims. It would extend leave provisions to include domestic violence leave, as when women leave a violent situation it can be very hard for them to manage court proceedings, counselling, housing and the needs of their children without extra leave. Work at a regular time and place can make work a target for the abuser, but with employer support through flexible working arrangements, that can be adjusted to support the employee. “Rural women often have to travel long distances between home and work and it can be very difficult for them to move away from a violent relationship,” said Ms Gower. “The services for helping victims of domestic violence are mostly located in urban areas. Enabling rural women to take time off work to access services is a step toward helping them to move away from a violent home, and setting a plan in place to rebuild their lives.” RWNZ recently made a submission on the government’s family violence law changes, in support of adding protection of animals to legislation. Violence to animals is often part of the package of abuse. Comments were also made about the lack of near-neighbours and isolation

I cannot put a value on his influence.” Anna spent every August school holiday riding a lambing beat with her uncle, saying she was going to be a land girl when she grew up, and at 17 years old she left home to start her career working on the land. “My love for horses was the main reason farm life was so attractive but after training my first dog Rod, a Heading Anna Holland is passionate about breeding and training working farm dogs

MILLWATER DENTAL ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Stock respect confident dogs.” ‘Careful’ is a command Anna uses to go from a gallop to a trot, from trot to walk, to a very slow walk — saving the stop command for stopping only. She says most people overuse a dog’s stop. “I also explain how I teach a dog ‘casting sides’ and how to ‘run’ a fenceline, which is really handy in both small

and large paddocks and invaluable for teaching a dog ‘distance’. It is a great confidence booster for training a dog to run ‘blind’ when he can’t see any stock.” “For those who attend my clinics I guarantee they will go away inspired and with a few new dog training tricks, as well as a greater understanding of their dogs.” The next clinics will be in Feilding on March 26, Wellsford on April 2, Morrinsville on April 5 and Taupo on April 9. Cost is $100 per person and booking is essential as places are limited. For more information go to annaholland. co.nz or phone 06 212 4848.

pup, I was totally hooked on rearing and training working dogs.” Anna mated Rod to her Heading bitch, Patricia, and that first litter was the beginning of a lifelong passion for breeding sheepdogs. “Back in those days it was a definite handicap being a woman in the sheep farming industry, however I shepherded for 25 years before trying my hand at other things, but I kept my bitches, bred the odd litter, trained a few pups and helped friends on their farms from time to time.” She also started writing columns for farming publications about the care and training of working farm dogs, and due to the popularity of the columns, Anna wondered if a more hands-on and personal approach would work, hence the Teaching People Dog Training clinics evolved. In the eight years she has been holding the clinics, Anna has presented

Trainers and dogs need to work at their own pace.” Everyone receives a copy of the booklet she wrote; it is a reminder outlining all the important points covered that day, freeing people to focus and not worry about taking notes. “We go through everything that I do to train a dog to have an all-round ability for day-to-day stock work. A HARDY BREED Shirley Jenkins is the secretary and herd registrar of the Welsh Black Cattle Society of New Zealand and she and husband Bruce moved into Welsh Black cattle in 1980 as an alternative type of stock for their 600 acres of rolling land, now reduced to 200 acres.

that Bruce grew up on for some 40 years. It was originally Bruce’s grandfather’s property. “We started with a Friesian dairy herd and went back into Jerseys. We then wanted beef cattle to go with the sheep running on the steeper 400 acres as well, and thought we would try a different breed of cattle to go with them,” said Shirley. “The Welsh Black have a good reputation for being hardy and providing high quality meat and milk. Bruce and I started using the bulls to tidy up after AI for our dairy herd. They seem to be getting more popular and we sell the bulls to dairy farmers. “They are average sized cattle, about the same as a short horn — not great big huge things, but definitely not miniatures. They used to be dual purpose but with the increase of

performance of traditional dairy breeds, they are now essentially a beef animal.” Shirley says they grow well and the stock handle all weather and are versatile for grazing hard country and land with rough feed, and they are a good size for lifestyle block owners. The meat has good flavour with nice marbling. “The cattle are bred all around the country and there is a polled strain as well as the horned ones. They are a good breed for anything really.” Last year the Welsh Black Cattle World Congress was held in New Zealand with 46 people visiting from across the world, including, Germany, Australia, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Wales. “They are still popular in Wales and have been cross bred with an exotic cow but the farmers there are going back to the original now. A Canadian visitor said they are great for the snow conditions where they live,”

Welsh Black cattle convert rough feed into weight gain and are known to enjoy foraging said Shirley. “They are good for cold climates because of their thick winter coat. They need a shelter to hide from the wind but they don’t

necessarily need housing in tough snow conditions as they hold their own heat longer than other breeds. They have very thick hides

Shirley Jenkins is the secretary and herd registrar of the Welsh Black Cattle Society of New Zealand and like all animals they do need shade in the summer.” In summer and in hot climates this coat is replaced with a smooth, glossy coat. “Welsh Blacks are a true hill country breed of cattle and are generally easy calving,” said Shirley. “Their history of being raised in harsh, outdoor environments and their ability to convert rough feed into weight gain and having a willingness to forage makes them an ideal animal for any property.” The calves are known to be vigorous and hardy and do not present feeding problems in dairy operations. The cows have a long, even lactation up to 300 days and they have a long productive life of 15–20 years. “This hardy breed has much to offer modern farming systems with its ease of production and award winning succulent meat. has nurtured, promoted and sought to improve the breed — a job which is continuing.” Margaret and Edwin Foord have 40 head of cattle and say they like them because of their temperament. “I was first introduced to the breed through some bulls my dad had. They were older Welsh Black and they were very calm and mellow to be around,” said Margaret. “Our children mistook them for stumps in the bush and it was then that I got really interested in the cows. My husband and I foot farm so we have a lot to do with the cattle and interact with them. The more we walk and talk to them the more they trust us.” Margaret says cattle they have brought in that had never been handled are now people friendly and as the years go on their progeny have become more trusting. “We sometimes have open days with 50 people visiting and our cattle handle it. They grow well on moderate or rough tucker. At

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

It is very exciting to see how it has grown, and people come from Auckland, Whangarei and beyond to see the show. “We invite the students from surrounding schools to take part — dancers, performers and singers are entering outfits and they are very community based. already excited about next year’s event!’ “Entrants have previously come from all over the Kaipara and other parts of Northland for the show when it was based in Paparoa, and we are hoping the same enthusiasm, talent and range of areas to be represented,” said Cheryl. “It is an enormous undertaking to stage this event successfully, involving many volunteers, community groups, businesses and schools. Being a community event it will include local performers and entertainment, a light supper and refreshments. “We encourage anyone to enter and everyone to attend this show for an amazing experience not seen before in our town. “Being a weekend show, the opportunities for local businesses are extensive as our area has so much to offer visitors, and the show will attract people from many areas.” For the Dargaville Wearable Arts event, registration forms and information for entrants are available from Muddy Waters Gallery at 43 Hokianga Road, the Kaipara Lifestyler offices at 107 River Road or email dargaville@wearablearts. nz for more information. Visit the Dargaville Arts Association Facebook page to see regular updates on this event. The show dates are September 15 and 16. For the Waipu Art n Tartan show, entries close April 28 with the show dates being July 21–22. Ticket sales open May 23. within it and the powerful impact it has. This web of life in a healthy soil is a magical world of interaction that science is only just beginning to understand. It is essential that farming recognises and understands the importance of microorganisms and their ability to transfer natural minerals into a plant available form; locking those minerals into the humus they produce to stop the minerals from leaching. This humus also stores water, increasing water retention quality in the soil and on your farm. Among all the different soil organisms, bacteria and fungi are especially important for soil health and in particular mycorrhizal fungi, which interact with 80% of plant species. Mycorrhizal fungi have many roles, such as decomposing organic matter, facilitating nutrient cycles, storage of carbon, building soil structure and protecting plants. The network of mycorrhizal strands extends the capacity of the plants roots and connects plants to one another. Understanding the benefits of these fungi will greatly improve the productivity and the health of soil. Today’s soil tests only identify the ‘soluble nutrients’ that are readily available to the plants in the short term. Beyond these soluble nutrients there is a huge natural resource of nutrients in the soil and these are made available to the plants through mycorrhizal fungi and other microorganisms. This is the natural system that has operated on the planet for 460 million years. One hundred years of chemical production is not only causing damage to farming soils and the environment, but is also causing health problems within plants,

animals and people; sickness is rife. Plants grown as crops are susceptible to all manner of pests and disease and when pesticides are used the plants are coated in toxic sprays whereby they cannot develop their own natural immunity; in a live, living, multi-mineral, microbial-rich soil the plant has all the necessary equipment to protect itself. In a chemical programme the plants are weak and continually need more chemical inputs, which is what the ‘chemical-treadmill’ is all about — these chemical sprays are going into the food chain. What! According to Patrick Holden, CEO of Sustainable Food Trust: “We are locked into a cycle of ever-increasing industrial farming based on a chemical mindset and a reductionist approach and we need to break free of it.” Agrissentials have the ultimate products to keep your farm, orchard, vineyard, market garden, etc, in top condition, which gives you the opportunity to not only leave the chemical age, but also to have the opportunity to become fully certified organic and increase your income. BUILDING & RENOVATION Taming the flames There are few pleasures the equal of enjoying a roaring fire in the grate while the temperature plummets outside. Since the beginning of civilisation the fireplace has been the heart of the home, but modern fires provide far more options than our ancestors had at their disposal. Professional fireplace installers know that the cold weather is the best spur to action for their customers — but also that waiting for the first frost of winter can be a critical error. The process of modern resource consent coupled with the intricacies of installation can mean that it takes several weeks from selecting a fireplace to lighting the first stack of kindling. This is only made more of a process by the choices available. While once a fireplace was the heart of the kitchen, providing piping hot meals as well as heat, these days a fireplace is more often the centrepiece of the living room. This doesn’t mean it can’t serve double duty to heat your household water, though — if a wetback installation is your desire, costs can be reduced by having the entire install completed by a certified plumber who is also a roofer and fireplace specialist. That way the cylinder connection and flue can be emplaced by the same tradesperson. Another popular option is to upgrade to an alternative fuel source. Efficient pellet fires will obviate the need to either buy in or cut, stack and season

firewood, and can generate all the heat of a conventional fire. In fact, many people restoring older homes with a classic look can find wood pellet or gas fires which look the part, combining rustic charm with modern efficiency. If a gas fire is your call, make sure it’s installed by a fully qualified gasfitter — and if a big renovation is on the cards, this same tradesperson may be able to install califonts and kitchen appliances at the same time.

For those with existing fires, the end of summer heralds the right time to call in the chimney sweep. Many insurance companies dictate yearly maintenance to ensure safety and keep your policy within bounds. A quick inspection will also reveal the need for new bricks, baffles or flue repairs, making for a safer and warmer winter.

Controlling the indoor environment

As the hot days of summer draw to a close and autumn rolls around again, it’s a good time to think ahead and make plans to weather the cold days which are coming. If the good weather right now has been the catalyst for some renovations or the opportunity to build afresh, this is a great time to consider insulation for the future. The prime advantage of considering insulation in tandem with a summer build project is to tackle three tasks at once up top. Roofing before the rains is a hot topic, and there’s no better time to remove those slates or panels of iron than when the sky remains blue and cloud-free. When the roof is off there’s easy access to the ceiling cavity, which is great for two reasons. In homes with no pitched roof it’s the one and only time that insulation can be sandwiched in between the inner and outer roof layers. And in homes with a ceiling cavity it’s much easier to drop new insulation in than lug it all up through the ‘manhole’ and shift it into place in the dark. While the roof is off it’s also a good time to consider pipes of all kinds.

Chimney flues can be inspected and replaced if necessary, keeping the seals with the new roof weathertight. Extractor fans are a snap to install if you’re not crawling out to the eaves in the dark. And this is the right time to install a positive pressure ventilation system for a drier home — you can DIY with a kit from your hardware store, or if you are buying from an established installer, having the roof off may mean you can negotiate a sharp deal on installation. Insulation options are wide and varied these days, with everything from traditional batts through to products utilising a blend of possum fur, natural plant fibres and space-age polymers. No matter which you choose, lay it on

Managing an excess of water

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

by Andy Bryenton

It seems that not too long ago the people of Northland — and New Zealand as a whole — were scanning the horizon for any chance of precipitation. Now, after a week of persistent inundation, many are pleased, but many more are calling for a halt. In fact, we’re blessed with abundant water in most parts of the country and in most times of the year — it’s all about how it’s used. When planning a build or renovation project, harvesting water from the rain, from bores and aquifers or from natural water features such as streams and rivers, is a key part of the process. Water is the stuff of life both for us, our livestock and our gardens, so planning to store and purify large volumes is a great example of forethought. Tanks and their placement are a big part of this, with new designs able to be concealed alongside walls or used as dividing walls themselves. The general rule is to provide more carrying capacity than you think you might need, as there’s nothing worse than running out! Water from off the roof, from the bore or from the dam or stream may appear crystal clear, but regular testing is advised, and the installation of a cartridge filter system and an ultraviolet purification system is also a good idea to your family’s health. Getting set up during a build or renovation means less hassles down the track, and it’s your local plumbers who carry such systems — folks who are likely to be on site anyway. They are especially useful when heavy rain sluices detritus out of the gutters or

While winter is a time of torrential downpours in the north, it’s all for the best if that water can be stored and made useful for hotter, drier times. A bit of forward planning at the design stage will see your home made droughtresistant and more efficient with this valuable natural resource.

Farm security is a snap

It used to be the case that far-flung rural areas were renowned for being free of crime and theft. Being a long way from the big city with its perceived villainy was a good reason for local pride — in a time when doors were never locked and the keys stayed in the ute at night. It’s sad but true that times have changed, and now farms are often at the front line of the security ‘arms race’ between sneak thieves and those who work hard for their money. Fuel supplies, quad bikes and even the contents of the homestead have been brazenly targeted by criminals, but technology is allowing rural folk to fight back with devices unheard of in previous years — at least outside of spy blockbusters. A popular choice on the shelves of many electrical stores is the Arlo wireless camera kit — a collection of four small cigarette pack sized camera modules and a single central hub or ‘base station’. The cameras are wireless with long life internal batteries, weatherproof to put up with showers of rain, and record information to a remote ‘cloud’ on the internet. Snap them to

their special dome-shaped fittings to cover any area of the home, and they even come with light amplifying night vision to help capture movement in the dark. Users can set the cameras to pop into life when they detect movement, or alternatively they can be controlled remotely from any cellular device. This means that anywhere you are in the world, the farm can be watched and kept secure. Picture this — an alert comes late at night while you’re out at dinner. A shadowy figure is trying to access the equipment shed. Snap to high-resolution night vision, and suddenly you have a clear view

of the burglar’s face in real time. This image can be sent right to the police force for a quick ‘pickup’ — or used later as evidence to track down wrongdoers. Then again, as some Arlo camera models have a speaker and microphone, you could also simply tell the hapless thief that he’s on film. That could cause any would be robber to head for the hills! In an age when almost everyone has broadband and a mobile device, the kind of security systems which were once the preserve of prisons, banks and gold reserves are now available over the counter. Switched on to gas

FIND THE RIGHT FIREPLACE TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS

by Andy Bryenton

There are three main areas of the home where electrical heating has been superseded, in terms of trends and economy, by a technology that harks back to Victorian times. At least the principle of gas power comes from those days of gas-lit lamps and steam boilers in automobiles — the modern applications for this natural resource are far more refined. In fact, it’s the literal local refinement of natural gas — sourced here in New Zealand — that contributes in part to its popularity. As the networks of distributors grow and competition makes the price of constant and reliable resupply even more affordable, people are looking to gas as an alternative to electricity in many areas of heating. The most obvious, of course, is in the kitchen. With the rise of ‘top chef’ style cooking shows and the collateral rise in people’s desire to be culinarily adventurous, having a top kitchen is now a high priority for both renovators and home builders. The microwave is out and the gas hob is in as far as preparing meals goes, for reasons of even heat and precise temperature control. From the blazing temperatures needed for a real Thai stir fry down to the merest touch of the blue flame to poach perfect eggs on a Sunday morning, gas is seen as the only way to go. And if the bottles are being installed, there’s no reason not to reticulate the entire home. Gas powered water heating is now more versatile than ever, with califonts becoming more efficient and the ability to heat and store water in a traditional cylinder for larger families

now on the cards. The popularity of the ‘on demand’ hot water califont is growing among those who have small families or who are building their retirement lifestyle, and in many cases it’s a simple decision to remove the old electric cylinder, install a califont and free up space for storage. Finally, as winter approaches, those with wood fires will be busy cutting and stacking wood. Not so those who own a gas fire. Flued, modern gas heating fireplaces may even prove less

It’s scientific name is Stachybotrys chartarum, but the black mould which affects many Northland homes is often referred to by other, less printable epithets. Tenacious and damaging to human health, this blight does not only affect old and rundown houses — it’s been seen blooming in relatively freshly built homes as well. The answer to getting rid of it forever — and preventing it forming — is to create a controlled environment. Linked to diseases from asthma and respiratory illness through to depression, black mould thrives in damp — both humid damp and the cold and condensation of winter. In fact, excessive condensation on internal window panes is a sure sign that the indoor environment is ripe for an infestation. While cleaning with bleaches and other chemicals can remove the visible stain, the hardy mould is hard to kill and keeps coming back so long as the conditions give it a toe hold. Thankfully, it can be banished by utilising simple means, all of which are well advised to be deployed when renovating or building. First and foremost, use the right materials for the right areas. Specialised wall coverings and building materials for wet areas have been designed to repel mould and shrug off the condensation from steam. Speaking of steam and vapour, it’s imperative that kitchens and bathrooms

are fitted with powerful extractors in areas of the country where black mould flourishes. Expelling the water vapour creates a drier environment, inimical to mould growth. In cases where the entire home is prone to condensation and damp, it may be prudent to install a ceiling-cavity positive pressure ventilation system. While these systems do not heat in the strictest sense, they do source drier air from the ceiling cavity to expel moist air from the home. A top tip — if your ceiling cavity has either no spiders or just one or

two ‘daddy long legs’, it’s drier than the downstairs. Spiders hate a dry environment, just like mould. Finally, it’s important to ensure weathertightness. Nothing encourages mould like leaks and drips, so plug those gaps as soon as possible and ensure that soft surfaces don’t get saturated. With good ventilation and a weathertight home, your heating systems will also function more effectively, saving money and making your home even less friendly to that troublesome Stachybotrys.

Better grass, better animals New pasture is more attractive to grazing animals and easier to manage during late spring and early summer, and getting the right mix in autumn sowing simply means smoother farm life ahead. Because new pastures are grazed more uniformly, it’s easier for farmers to control the quantity of residual dry matter when animals are moved. The optimum post-grazing residual means optimum ME regrowth and increased animal performance at the next productive grazing. New pastures consistently produce an average of 0.5 more megajoules of ME/kg DM — on top of the extra dry matter produced by a new pasture. This is due to a higher proportion of desirable species that are later and more uniform flowering with a leafier sward and fewer seed heads produced Most new perennial ryegrass cultivars are available with new endophytes developed to solve particular problems in different regions. The endophyte occurring naturally in New Zealand ryegrass pastures — ‘standard’ or ‘wild’ endophyte — makes its host ryegrass plants resistant to some insect pests.

New endophytes are continuing to be developed to maintain good animal health while enhancing pest resistance. As well as Argentine stem weevil, new endophytes provide resistance to pasture mealy bug, black beetle and root aphid, with more pests likely to be added to this list. DairyNZ carried out a three-year study comparing pastures with the novel AR1 and standard endophyte — the former produced 9% more milk solids than the latter. The Pasture Improvement Leadership Group led by DairyNZ includes researchers, the seed industry, farmers and agricultural contractors. The group was originally formed to help tackle issues affecting pasture persistence and performance head-on by ensuring farmers receive consistent, timely messages. To highlight a broadening of scope, the

CONTRACTING HELPS WORKLOAD BY ANN MORGAN

Bradley and Grace Henty have owned Henty Agriculture Contracting Ltd for two years and offer services specialising in silage, ground work, air seeding, crop spraying, effluent and muck spreading, seed drilling and regrassing.

“W

e purchased the company off my uncle who owned it for many years. I used to work for him and the opportunity came to buy it so we did,” says Bradley. “We are based north of Whangarei and do a lot of work in the area including Ruatangata to Towai and beyond. We will travel anywhere necessary for our clients and also work on lifestyle blocks as well. “I enjoy the work and meeting farmers. Two days are never the same as we are often on different properties and talking about different topics and

seeing what people do differently. It is a really interesting job and we enjoy knowing we are helping others with the running of their family businesses and by doing our part we are helping them to succeed.” Bradley says the past year has been tough on farmers everywhere and everyone tries to prepare for difficult times in the rural community. “We are a young family business ourselves and we want to do the right thing for our clients. If someone contracts us to do their silage, they can do as much or as little as they like toward the project. “They can mow and roll the grass if they

Bradley says regrassing is generally done in autumn and this may be a big year with how dry the season has been like and we can rake and pick it up, or we can do the whole job, or work in with another contractor who we job share with for bigger jobs. We find working together works well in the climate today. “Contracting us can remove stress from the farmer and knowing that although it may cost, the job is done in the timeframe necessary and for silage we can get the harvest in at the right time.” Bradley says spreading effluent and muck can save on fertiliser costs by reusing the effluent from the stock. “We can desludge the ponds with our tank and lift out any solids left behind with our muck spreader. This saves people having to source such equipment and having the responsibility of

machine maintenance and the running costs of owning their own machines. “Spraying crops and crop planting and protection is also what we do. We plant whatever summer crops a farmer needs such as turnips and we are able to spread the effluent on the paddocks prior to planting to feed the soil.” He says regrassing is generally done in autumn and this may be a big year with how dry the season has been. “Although there is an initial outlay for the farm, it is good for them to get a contractor in if they are unable to do the job themselves because getting the job done even though it has been a hard year, can prevent loss in the long run by having crops established on time. “Through spring farmers often don’t

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Software supporting farm development Northland farmers are using farm software to help them develop their farm potential. During the past 6 months, Libby Wood of the farm technology company FarmIQ has been working with Northland farmers using the FarmIQ software, as well as farmers considering getting it. She says there’s a noticeable development trend in Northland, and farm software can help. “Farmers I have been speaking to tend to be focussing on improving pastures, fencing and nutrient status, and starting to use forage crops. With the FarmIQ software, you can track what’s happening with land, feed and animals to see progress being made. It’s those accumulated small differences in farming that together make a big change.” Libby herself runs dry stock on a piece of land. “The bit that interests me is managing them to fulfil their potential. For that reason I really like the weight target report. You can easily look at what you did last year and see how you can do better next time, and you track their progress.” She says farm managers are latching on to how the software can help with running the farm

day to day as well as planning. “Things that tend to get their attention are the online diary, interactive mapping, real-time stock rec, good reproduction reporting and the data link with the CashManager Rural financial software. “Several of the farms up here are trust farms so they like the visibility for staff and trustees, because any of these people can be given their own password and log in. “For some it’s about improving the land for future generations and for others lifting profitability is more of a driver. “Some of the conversations I’ve had lately are on farms that are introducing mobile phones and educating the staff about using them to record information using the FarmIQ app. That means they can record as they go. For example, if they’ve drenched a mob they take a few minutes to record it, or if they see a dead animal, for example. The staff are keen to learn. It’s introducing information technology into the farm business.”

The potential of good pasture

QUAD BIKE SAFETY

Autumn is a time of pasture renewal on farms across the country and time to consider pasture quality as well as quantity in feeding livestock. It is a matter that has become increasingly important in the light of the industry’s economic growth that has been boosted as the world demands more protein, and importers increasingly looking to specifics in what they are buying for on-sale in markets abroad. This is particularly due to a move towards production to customer specification, particularly for carcass weight and timing of supply. As stocking rates have dropped and per animal performance targets have become more important, pasture quality has become a critical constraint to achieving potential growth rates. Findings from New Zealand and international research have been refined into The Beef and Lamb New Zealand Pasture Quality Workshop to provide a simple method of assessing pasture quality in the field for everyday use on-farm. Visual assessments of dead matter, legume content, grass leaf and grass stem are turned into quantitative estimates of nutritive value by the computer package Q-Graze, which

adds the effects of grazing to estimate the growth of young animals on that pasture. Measuring the nutritive value of a pasture can be done by direct laboratory assessment or by indirect visual assessment. Laboratory measurements include metabolisable energy (ME), digestibility, fibre and protein. How much do animals eat and why? What drives potential intake? The potential feed intake of animals is determined by physiological state (eg pregnancy, lactation, sex) and genetics. The animals’ health and the feed offered determine whether the potential is reached. Intake is influenced by the amount of pasture offered to the animal, commonly estimated as pasture cover, pre-and post-grazing dry matter yield or height The more that is offered, the more

21

that can potentially be eaten, up to a maximum where increased pasture dry matter yield has no more influence on intake and liveweight gain. This has to be balanced by the need to keep pasture quality high, ensure good regrowth and maintain economic stocking rates. A IN &

Ron’s company has recently taken delivery of a shipment of Sechura Reactive Phosphate Rock — and he was at the Port of Tauranga in February to see 2000 tonnes of it discharged for Kiwi Fertiliser from the MV Lolland. “This RPR fertiliser is the gold standard — the real McCoy of RPR. Its natural phosphorus is not acidified before it is spread on to pasture. “It is tested prior to loading in Peru and is above the minimum 10 per cent phosphorus and 30 per cent citric soluble criteria set for New Zealand RPR standards,” says Ron. “The shipment has arrived at the perfect time for autumn top dressing applications.” Because it is extracted from the ancient seabed in the Sechura region of Peru it also contains a lot of calcium, magnesium, sulphur and minor trace nutrients, which are all readily available to plants through the actions of soil life. Although the Sechura is not altered in anyway, Kiwi Fertiliser does add Brimstone 90 — an elemental sulphur — before application to the product to increase phosphorus plant availability. Reduced leaching “The RPR still has all of the colloidal clay attached to it.” Because it is a fine, sandlike substance, Ron says the risk of leaching into waterways is reduced by up to 80 to 90 per cent. The MV. Lolland spent 22 days at sea to bring the product from Peru to Tauranga and the Sechura RPR was discharged in 26 hours from her holds by a giant grab that can hold the equivalent of a full truck-and-trailer load of

material into the wharf hopper and from there into the trucks waiting below. The shipment has replenish supplies into Kiwi Fertiliser’s stores in Te Teko, Te Awamutu, Marton and Havelock North. Supplies of high quality RPR fertiliser have been limited in New Zealand in recent months — and Ron says Kiwi Fertiliser is pleased to be able to source high quality Sechura for its clients throughout the North Island. Soil audits So strong is the demand, the first two unit loads were dispatched immediately to a hill country beef farm near Wellsford. “This product is ideal for hill country sheep and beef farms, dairy farms particularly in the Waikato, and in fact any soils in which crops are grown and show the need for phosphate application,” says Ron. “However, we only supply phosphate for soils which are shown, through our soil audits, to be lacking in P. Many soils in the Central Plateau regions of Putaruru, Tokoroa, Taupo, Broadlands, Rotorua and Tauranga retain a lot of phosphorus and show excessive P so they don’t need additional applications — but they do need other nutrients that are a higher priority and a better soil fertility investment than phosphorus.” Although the Sechura fertiliser was tested at its source, Kiwi Fertiliser has commissioned two further independent tests from laboratories in New Zealand and the United States so its clients can be assured of the exact percentage of P and other nutrients as well as citric and formic solubility tests.

DairyNZ recommends farmers should complete an autumn feed budget to identify shortages and ensure quality of any pasture renewal and also target autumn pests such as black beetle, aphids, clover root weevil and grass grubs where possible. Good grazing management through early autumn includes maximising pasture growth balanced with allowing pastures to recover following the summer dry period. ‘When planning renewal, identify the poor performing paddocks first and address the underlying problems behind pasture deterioration, and consider soil fertility and pH, pugging, overgrazing, weeds, pests, soil compaction and drainage,’ DairyNZ says.

‘Buy quality seed and select the right pasture species and/or cultivar for your farm. Sowing a small area well is less risky than sowing a large area poorly. ‘Take care sowing clover as it should be sown at a shallower depth than ryegrass, and give special attention to weed control, contouring and levelling if avoiding cultivation after forage crops. ‘Management is helped by leaving consistent post-grazing residuals and grazing pastures at the right time. Grazing ryegrass pastures too early reduces autumn growth and too late reduces the quality. ‘Determine the leaf stage of your pastures.

Leaf appearance rates mainly depend on water availability and temperature, with leaves taking longer to appear where water is limited. ‘For areas nor th of Taupo, the recommended renewal date is March 31, and if permanent pasture is following crops, consider the time for full crop utilisation and the renewal process’.

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

What direction do you choose? A little over four years ago I left the farm after 10 years of farming on the biological trail. Some people thought that to go in that direction you were brave, and others thought you were just plain stupid. There is still a very strong feeling that to take away the dependance of high usage of nitrogen, and more recently palm kernel, would be devastating to many farmers. To even contemplate moving into organics for them would be inconceivable. While regulations stay as they are then these farmers can rest easy and carry on managing their business unchanged. However, whether we like it or not, there is a wind of change blowing and early adopters to this change may well be better prepared for the storm that will inevitably arrive. We may well find that the way that the majority of farms are run will change over the next 5 years.

Pond crust gone for 10th the cost?

Yep!

Enforcement of strict regulations are likely to be rolled out during this time. High phosphate and nitrates in waterways are testament to a fertiliser system which clearly needs an overhaul. Whether it’s the farmers who apply it or the fertiliser companies who sell these nutrients, it’s obvious that there is too much for the plants to absorb. If the plants can’t absorb these surplus nutrients then they end up polluting our precious water. So the regional councils have identified that restrictions are needed to stop the surplus nutrients, by decreasing the amount applied in the future. The overseer programme is the preferred system for measuring and

What we haven’t got we can get!

managing this huge undertaking. This all seems fair, particularly from an environmental point of view. But is this scenario really fair? Well, from my experience as a farmer, the biological approach showed a lot of difference from the chemical way. So are these two obviously talked about systems so vastly different? I have found that the more I look and observe, the more the chemical system doesn’t make sense. The more I watch and observe over time the more I see that the chemical system is the very practice that is actually leading farmers down the wrong road. The largest part of my work has been to focus on the end point of our business, the effluent pond. The obvious practice to manage effluent has been to tackle and manage effluent with machinery. Solid separators, stirrers and weeping walls. The majority of farmers still think this way. There are even consultants that will advise farmers that this is the only way to manage effluent. I have found that the farmers with the biggest effluent problems, particularly crusting and solids, are heavy chemical fertiliser users. In fact I can look at a heavily crusted pond and have a pretty accurate assessment as to the fertiliser a farmer is applying and what his soil is doing. After studying the fertiliser and soil science available to us, I have deduced that fertiliser companies have fabricated or left out some scientific facts, which

has led our farming industry down a problematic pathway. If regional councils are now pointing the finger at farmers for their bad fertiliser practices, I would suggest the fault lies with the advice given to the farmers about the best fertilisers to use. I believe that fertiliser choices can be improved and farmers do have better avenues to procure quality products. My research and observation, along with similar practitioners, indicates that a biological approach demands a higher balanced pH soil which always shows increased microbiological activity. Microbes require the best possible conditions to digest food in a cow’s stomach. Science has shown that higher pH is a factor here. The more food the microbes and enzymes digest, the less undigested solids end up in the pond. Again, the effluent ponds with the least solids always have a higher pH in the pond. Chemical fertiliser teaching embraces a pH in the soil of 5.8 to 6. My research has very simply shown this soil pH will produce a crusted pond and the lower the soil pH the thicker the crust on the pond. I would suggest that a change to inputs which will lift the pH in a balanced approach, will also lift your efficiency throughout your whole farming system. Improving to take on the world by Andy Bryenton

New Zealand’s primary sector is the undisputed powerhouse of our economy, set to generate close to $48 billion of export revenue in 2017. Our produce feeds close to 40 million people, making our output of dairy, beef, lamb and arable crops vital, not just to our own economic survival, but to the day-to-day survival of whole nations. The dairy industry especially is poised to surge this year as the global economic environment begins to look more favourable. But playing on the world stage means staying ahead of the game in terms of best practices, and this vital part of the primary sector is working through a raft of farm by farm infrastructure changes to boost the quality of our finished product, and hence its desirability on the open market. Dairy farmers already face strict environmental restrictions, imposed by local council bodies, with regard to the treatment, storage and usage of effluent. Part of the force driving change toward better practices in this regard is the perception of, and interaction with, the wider public — a public relations and image push which prioritises cleaner waterways and an understanding that the industry is working hard to decrease its environmental footprint. Great success in this overhaul of

effluent containment and reuse as fertiliser is often under-reported, but with the application of science and an investment in new tech, farms are becoming cleaner and greener than ever. To keep up with the expectations of the global market, the dairy industry has been extremely pro-active in self regulation. Measures such as ensuring better, healthier water supplies have come not from without but from within, with initiatives for water purity spearheaded by industry giant Fonterra seeing new standards propagated and enforced, making diary sheds more hygienic places. To further ensure the quality of milk at collection, the next phase of the compliance programme to come into effect looks to centre around milk chiller plant and equipment. New rules set to come into play in 2018 will require a faster cooldown for milk, direct from the cow to the pre-chiller

to the vat. This may require an overhaul of some of the nation’s ‘fleet’ of chillers, and the appropriation of new tech such as ice banks, improved heat exchangers and pre-cooling add-ons. The upshot

of all this investment, however, will be a more robust brand image for New Zealand’s dairy products — something which will bring tangible gains and more leverage at the trading table.

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Last month we talked about preventative trimming. This month I want to go a step further and talk about lame cows. Remember how we said that the outer claw is often higher than the inner claw? That means that the outer claw will carry a greater part of the weight. When it carries more weight the live tissue inside that outer claw is under more stress than the inner claw. When a cow gets laminitis (a disease in the foot that damages the blood vessels of the claw and weakens the live tissue), the outer claw will suffer more because of this extra stress. So when we trim this claw preventatively, we spread the weight evenly over the two claws and the effects of the disease will be minimised. If a cow got to the point where the outer claw became too badly affected and ended up lame, then we need to go further. If this claw suffered more because of the extra pressure, then the logical thing to do for this cow is to minimise the pressure as much as we can. We lower that claw even further so that the outer claw ends up being lower than the smaller claw. In this case the inner claw will end up taking a bigger part of the weight. You may ask now how that can help a cow because the inner claw is going to be overstressed and will end up going lame. That would be true if the outer claw had to deal with this extra pressure for a long time, like two or three months. But because the outer claw will grow back in time it is not an issue. Having trimmed the outer claw thinner the live tissue inside this claw is getting rest and can heal up again. Taking the pressure off the wound is the key to overcoming lameness and most people know this. We often see lame cows that have been trimmed by a staff member, where the wound has been dug out. The philosophy is that you take the weight away from the wound and spread it out over the rest of that claw. That is

wrong. The weight has to go to the other claw. The whole lame claw needs to be released from weight. In this case we are still not finished with this lame cow. We need to take all the loose horn away. If you can put your fingernail underneath the horn, then bacteria and dirt can go there. That is just a recipe for infection. So when you see an underrun sole, all that horn needs to come off. That may mean that the whole sole has to come off in some cases. Don’t be afraid to do so just try to not make the claw bleed. If the lame claw ends up with the live tissue exposed, and you can’t create enough height difference between the two claws, then you should glue a claw block to the healthy claw. This way the sore claw is artificially raised off the ground. The theory here goes, if in doubt use a claw block. Claw blocks are always cheaper than lame cows. On our website veehof.co.nz you can find the five step schedule on hoof trimming. I recommend to print it out, laminate it and leave it in the cowshed. You can always call us if you have some other questions or would like to find out more about our training options.

DAIRY ADVERTORIAL

Calcium calcium calcium It’s the answer to pest and disease control, fruit quality and the shelf life and storability of produce. Calcium’s role in plant nutrition is often overlooked. It’s costing growers and consumers millions of dollars in fungicide/pesticide use and produce storage problems — let alone looking at the human health implications brought about by the consumption of chemical pesticide and fungicides. We should not confuse the role of important soil amendments such as lime or gypsum with the overwhelming need for water soluble calcium by high value crops. They are both critically important — but are two separate issues. Calcium fertilisation of many crops should not be confused with the actual calcium requirements of a crop. For example potatoes require 90% of their calcium during budding, and for apples 4–6 weeks after full blossom. This cannot be achieved by the application of agricultural lime — it does not release anywhere near the calcium requirements for a plant at the right time. Most times calcium fertilisation is only

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

considered when a deficiency is evident. Classic deficient symptoms are the death of growing tips, abnormal dark foliage, premature shedding of buds and flowers, and weakened stems. Calcium’s number one role is cell wall strength and thickness, which is critical for strong structural rigidity. Rapid uptake can only be supplied by the application of water soluble forms of calcium, and timing is everything. Recent Trials showed the raising of bean leaf calcium levels from 0.4% (where 100% of the plants were infected and decayed within 6 days) to 3.4%, resulting in the total elimination of harmful Erwiana bacteria infections. In another trial calcium leaf tissue content in beans was replaced with potassium. The infection rating for botrytis went from slight to severe. This was also evident in lettuces. Other trials bear out calcium’s role in defeating the fungal pathogen which causes crown rot in tomatoes, in

MIND YOUR SPEED AROUND SCHOOL BUSES

reducing pythium blight and root rot in grasses and citrus, and in substantially boosting nitrogen use efficiency. Kansas State University and Tennessee University conducted trials to look at the efficiency of different nitrogen fertilisers. In these trials a threefold increase in yield for each kilogram of nitrogen was observed for the nitrogen applied with a soluble calcium source versus a straight nitrogen source. That means a big win for both the farmer, through lower costs, and for the environment. Remember, that the surface application of urea requires impeccable timing with rain, requiring 7–9mm of rain within 36–48 hours of application, or substantial losses of nitrogen occur.

The Reams Soil Test, developed by the famous Dr Carey Reams from the USA, is the means by which we measure water soluble calcium content in a soil. High levels of water soluble calcium are needed for healthy and abundant crops. For example, when growing lucerne or alfalfa, this needs to be 6,000–8,000kgM/ha of water soluble calcium — this is why we can grow lucerne on a marine clay when all the so-called professionals said ‘it can’t be done’. RURAL WHEELS

Return of the top contender by Andy Bryenton

It’s all too easy to slip into a boxing metaphor when talk of the tussle for top light commercial comes around. Utes are big business and right now the Ford Ranger rules the roost, with even the mighty Toyota Hilux relegated to second place. We’ve even got an ‘undercard’ of lower-priced utes out of Asia and India battling for supremacy, but there’s been a notable gap in the top tier lately that has had certain badgeloyalists fuming. Back in the day, the Holden 1-tonne ute was king. Before the idea of a utility truck was redefined by the modern demand for car-like handling and leather interiors, the bench-seated, chromegrilled HQ was the working man’s first choice. Up against the Valiant and Falcon, the big Holden literally helped build most of our towns and cities. Now Holden are back, with a ute of a different mould. After their previous Colorado failed to topple the blue oval, GM bosses went back to the drawing board, and they’ve delivered an ampedup contender for 2017 — a new Colorado that embraces both modern aesthetics and safety while still staying true to the spirit — and lugging power — of the legendary one tonner. Under the hood a big 2.8L Duramax diesel pumps out 147 kilowatts and a maximum 500 newton-metres of torque — the key to the immense towing capacity of the Colorado, rated at 3.5 tonnes. Add in that classic one tonne of deck load and you have a machine

Pay attention! Headed for the top — the new Colorado is set to take on Hilux and Ranger as NZ’s best ute

which can handle the caravan, the boat or anything for the farm. That sense of comfort is more than apparent inside, with options for all the modern conveniences of a luxury sedan and standard features which older utes could only dream about. The suite of electronics, both visible and invisible, are state of the art as well. It’s hard to miss the big touch screen centre console which serves as a hub for both Android and Apple’s in-car mobile platforms, as well as a reversing camera and entertainment centre.

The top utes had better watch out — one of the big names is back, cinching up its gloves to take a shot at the title. And for a heavyweight contender, it’s not bad looking, either!

Strong on toughness by Andy Bryenton

There are two ways to build a reliable, hard-working utility truck. The first is to come up from the roots of the ute concept — adapting the classic layout of a big sedan and adding a flat deck. The other way is to start at the other end — with an honest to goodness truck. Isuzu is no stranger to building trucks and the big diesel engines that power them. Vast swathes of southeast asia have been built by Isuzu’s heavy haulers, many of which have faced conditions that would crumble lesser machines. That’s why when the Isuzu name appeared on a ute called the D-Max in the not so distant past, it was well worth a look. Those familiar with the tough Bighorn and MU SUVs certainly took note, and a quick pop of the bonnet justified their curiosity. Experience building those big diesel mills has been distilled down into the 4JJ1 turbo diesel — three litres of hightorque combustion armed with modern turbo technology for even more grunt. Just looking at the components of the D-Max’s engine gives one pause; they are visibly bigger and more solidly built than those from other utes in the

market. That’s something you feel on the road, with 3.5 tonnes of towing capacity at your disposal. But it’s also something that will pay dividends during the life of the vehicle. Using truck components means that this is a serious workhorse. Big roller bearings and a stainless timing chain are just a couple of examples. That’s not so say that the D-Max isn’t up for its fair share of adventure, either. There’s a reason this ute is a favourite of hunters, teamed up with the founder of outdoor clothing label Swazi. And there’s no bare-bones approach to comfort here, either. A well-appointed cabin filled with all the modern gadgets and safety features comes as standard. It’s proof that the world’s largest diesel manufacturer can blend toughness and reliability with comfort and sharp looks, creating a modern masterpiece.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula What is Bettaflex?

• Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Steps to joint health by John Arts

important are fats. Some fats are inflammatory and worsen arthritis. Some are anti-inflammatory and reduce the inflammatory part of arthritis. Others are relatively neutral. Animal fats are high in arachidonic acid which increases inflammatory eicosanoids and tend to push the body to an inflammatory state. This is especially true for grain-fed meat and dairy. Fortunately our predominantly grass-fed meat and dairy has a more neutral impact on inflammation. As a rule I would use lean meat cuts and moderate dairy fats. Next time we look at omega-3 and 6 and see the importance of maintaining a low ratio of omega-6 to 3. If you have arthritis you should work to a personalised programme for best results. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For personalised advice, contact John on 0800 423559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Join his full weekly newsletter at www.abundant. co.nz.

Part two: I was recently contacted by someone with osteoarthritis in her hands, feet and hips. After detailed analysis we made some changes to her diet and supplement programme. She was taking a supplement which combined fish oil and various antioxidants. While this product had many beneficial ingredients, the amount of active omega-3 was lower than I recommend. We added my stabilised fish oil at 6,000mg daily and higher doses of my chondroitin/glucosamine/ curcumin supplement. The results have been excellent. Her joints have much improved and she is especially thrilled with her feet, as these were starting to cause real problems. The key to improved joint health is being prepared to experiment and use a process of elimination. In this case she was taking omega-3 — we just changed the doses. She was taking a joint supplement — what we did was to use different doses and combinations. There are many diet changes that can help arthritis. By far the most
