These publications equate to one of our newspapers being delivered to a home two and a half million times a year — each one locally owned, staffed and operated. That’s a big responsibility, but one, which our team of journalists, designers, writers, salespeople and administrators are proud to accept. Now we’re changing our name to reflect our core principles — as of May 8 we are Integrity Community Media. Accountant in horticulture poll by Ann Morgan

Dargaville kumara grower, farmer, and chartered accountant Kathryn de Bruin is hoping to gain one of the two Northland seats on the nine-member Horticulture New Zealand board director elections. Voting closes on May 28 and directors are elected for a three-year term. Kathryn already works alongside people across the primary sector through her accountancy practice. As an experienced board member, Kathryn says she is ready to serve on the HortNZ Board. “New Zealand’s diverse horticulture industry has enjoyed success and grown dramatically, and election to the board will allow me to contribute positively to the people in the industry,” says Kathryn. “My husband, Andre, and I grow kumara, run cattle and store lambs on an 80ha platform — 30ha owned and 50ha leased. We have built our business from the ground up and employ two fulltime and up to 20 seasonal staff. “My vision for horticulture in New Zealand is strong businesses, a sustainable environment, empowered people and thriving communities. I will bring a fresh perspective, strong financial acumen, analytical skills, strategic thinking, problem-solving and open communication with the board. “We now face rapid change, which brings challenges nationally and globally — biosecurity, climate change,

environmental sustainability, technology, regulation, and access to water, markets and skilled people. We must not only keep pace with this change but stay one step ahead by leading from the front. For this to happen, we need diverse leadership and thinking around the board table.” Wide governance experience over the past 15 years has seen Kathryn represent the primary sector on the National Council of the NZ Institute of Chartered Accountants, chair two school boards of trustees and serve in other industry and community roles. “The board is there to support its levy payers allowing them to be adaptable, resilient and successful. That support must be inclusive — from the smallest grower to the largest — all people, all places, all backgrounds. “I have the skills, experience, time, energy and connections to represent you on the HortNZ Board. My financial background will allow me to ensure decisions made around the setting and use of grower levies are well-thoughtout and the financial implications taken fully into account. I know how satisfying and addictive growing good food is and

I understand at a practical level the challenges and risks that we all face. Every day I work with people with businesses in the industry, and I know how to make the tough decisions. I will add value and depth to the board table and I can and will work with all people in all areas. I want to help see the goal of a ten billion dollar industry by 2020 is achieved.” Kathryn constantly invests in her own governance knowledge through ongoing training and development and has participated in training through the New Zealand Institute of Directors and also completed a ten-month leadership and governance course last year through the Agri-Women’s Development Trust. Any active grower member of Horticulture New Zealand can vote. The election results will be announced on June 1, 2018.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

SHOWCASING TO

THE WORLD BY ANN MORGAN

This is part two of Cheryl Eldridge’s story of being passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool. With her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough Station and developed the breed, which is now called ‘Stansborough Grey’.

C

heryl and her two sons personally sort and class every fleece into three shades of grey as the sheep are shorn. This is done twice annually to keep the quality at its best for textile production. Cheryl has a background in the creative arts, along with daughter Kiri, and designs all the fabrics, accessories and finished product range. “The wool comes in dark, mid and silver grey, and within these preselected tones there is a whole spectrum, which creates the marvelous, almost metallic sheen,” says Cheryl. “I started working alone, in a shed with one loom, and now have six historic looms and a wide blanket loom, and we

are training a couple of apprentices to pass on the knowledge we have. “The yarn is better spun as fine worsted, and then it is combed to enhance the lustre. The demand for the fibre is such, that we cannot supply generally because all our yarn is used in-house.” The fibre can be woven, knitted and felted, and all processes are used to produce the unique Stansborough designs. The yarn is taken to the Stansborough Mill in Wellington for weaving. The looms at the mill weave their own strands of history, dating from the early 1890s. “They are amongst the first mechanical looms ever designed and

add, rather than detract, from the general impression of intense individual involvement in production. Depending on the complication of each different weave, it can take two days to hand thread and set up each loom before weaving,” says Cheryl. “This intensity of involvement is in all parts of the process between farm and final products that are totally distinctive. Our inspiration for designs come from the environment in which the animals are farmed, tree barks, leaf forms and stunning vistas. Our team have spent years developing the many complicated undulating twill derived and other weaves, and our resulting fabric has a unique handmade and natural feel, quite different to other mass-produced commercial products.” The fabric has beautiful draping qualities, enhanced by the careful — sometimes created by hand — finishing to emphasise the lustre, drape and handling. “We have travelled the world and opened the markets up and we do a lot of high-end quality designs for international clients, but 50 per cent of our business is still national.” Throws, ties, scarves, wraps and cloaks have been fashioned from the gleaming Stansborough fabric. “We have worked a lot with the movie industry: including producing garments and items for the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Spartacus, Pete’s Dragon, The Water Horse and Kidnapped. It has been an honour to present New Zealand

Barry, Cheryl and Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace with one of the families historic looms

creations to the world. I believe wool has been underrated as a natural product — we could be using the lower grade wool across the country to make healthy and sustainable insulation for every home and slippers for children in schools and the elderly. “The value of it being breathable and environmentally friendly, safe, fire resistant and healthy is important to many people. We are looking after the planet long-term by using natural fibres — people want things that will last in their homes for years to come and have something to snuggle up and you get natural comfort from wool — unlike man made fibres. You can use so many different types of wool — it just needs good imagination — our grey wool can

5

Alpacas are also a feature on the station where their fleece is mixed with wool to create a variety of yarns

be mixed with other fibres, including Alpaca and bamboo, and we want to use hemp in the future. “Wool absorbs energy and when used in carpet, you don’t get the gases that carpet glues used in synthetic gives off. Cheryl has worked furnished super yachts, boutique lodges and designer homes in New Zealand and overseas. Their designer blanket range has been gifted to VIPs worldwide, and has the backing of Campaign for Wool — led by Prince Charles. The Stansborough label is now recognised on the world stage for its innovative and highly prized, sustainable, textile creations.

“We had no idea the results would be seen on cinema screens around the world. “The Lord of the Rings movies was our ultimate challenge, but now exporting to growing high-end markets is our biggest achievement. “We are pleased we found that flock of grey sheep, now registered as a wool breed in their own right, ‘Stansborough Greys’, when the downturn happened in farming in 1991 “The many years of selective breeding and hard work has certainly paid off and it is wonderful to take New Zealand to the world.”

Proud to grow tamarillo

Aaron Davies and Robyn Wickenden grow tamarillos on their one hectare of land in Poroti after relocating from Auckland for a lifestyle change.

“W

e moved north two years ago because we had got to a stage in life that we evaluated if we wanted to stay in the city or try something else while we still had good years ahead of us,” says Robyn. “We both love the outdoors and always had vegetable gardens, and found this business for sale, and decided to try it because it was established. “We now have an orchard with 2,200 red tamarillo trees. Tamarillos were first introduced into New Zealand from Asia in the late 1800s. Originally only yellow

and purple-fruited strains were produced until the red tamarillo was developed in the 1920s by an Auckland nurseryman from seed from South America.” They also grow blueberries, peaches, avocados, bananas and other fruit. Aaron and Robyn had not grown tamarillos before purchasing the fouryear-old orchard. “We have learned a lot from the previous owners and sourcing information from the internet. The Horti Centre in Whangarei has been a wealth of knowledge as well. It is a charitable

trust that helps growers — they provide advice and can supply fertiliser and agrichemicals at reasonable prices. “We get the summer off as we pick the fruit between May and August. Then we prune for a couple of months and our time is our own apart from spraying for pests on a fortnightly basis.” This is to control the potato/tomato psyllid fly. “The fly came into New Zealand in 2007 and wiped out 90 per cent of the commercial tamarillo orchards — there were 400, now there are only approximately 35 left. “To prevent the fly destroying your plants, a year-round spray programme is needed. If you see the fly, it is too late, and the tree will last weeks — to a year maximum before it will die.” “Some people thought they can grow organically, but this has not been successful, and they lose the trees to the fly strike. For us, it was a big negative knowing we would have to be spraying, but it is essential.” Insecticides that only affect specific pests are used, and during the picking season, fruit is tested to ensure no residue is detectable. “Commercial growers have to follow spray plans and be GAP registered, follow health, safety, integrated hygiene, picking and packing and good employment practices. The other risk is frost, a bad frost will drop the whole crop on the ground, and you would not have a return for the year.” Robyn and Aaron have a big portable frost fan on a cherry picker to keep the frost away. The couple, collect the

best fruit each year to grow their own seed stock. “Within 18 months we have a thriving tree, and we can do most of the work ourselves because tamarillos, don’t need to be picked in one go. Two people can manage this size property nicely with a bit of help, during harvesting. We sell our produce to MG Marketing and also export a few, but export needs a certain sized fruit because they sell per piece. Ours is a large variety so are mostly too big. The ratio in a tray for smaller sizes is 39 rather than 25 large. “It is generally a positive industry, with around 400 tonnes produced every year nationwide.” “We must have a microclimate here, we are 100 metres above sea level, and during the winter we can get down to zero degrees with just a touch of frost. The daily high seldom gets below 14 and is in the mid-20s during summer, and warmer inside the shelter belts. “The tamarillos need a good week of under 10 degrees at night to help bring their colour in when ripe. They can be ripe but orangey because the colour hasn’t changed. Our variety go orangeyred — they are sweet and ripe when they are slightly soft around the top of the stalk, and the calyx goes a bit yellow.” Robyn says the fruit is a good source of vitamin C, magnesium and potassium. “Trees have a seven to eight-year lifespan, so we have a replacement cycle of 15–20 per cent per year. We irrigate as well, but they don’t like wet feet and do like shelter as they are a soft tree, and wind can break the branches. People used to

The fruit is harvested by hand and is ripe when the top of the stalk is slightly soft plant tamarillos in avocado orchards as an alternative crop whilst waiting for avocados to mature. We hand pick around 25–30 tonnes annually, and they

are washed and individually inspected and graded. We are pleased we chose tamarillos, they fit well for us, and we are loving living off the land.”

arah has loved horses her entire life. At the age of 10, she received her first horse as a Christmas gift. Her grandfather, a former top jumps jockey, gave her a lot of support and encouragement. “My grandad sent me to help out at a stable for Stuart Manning, who was a good friend of his,” she said. “So I learnt to ride track work on the beach, groomed horses at the races, and all the rest of the hard work that went with it.” Work for Central Districts racehorse trainer, Kevin Gray, and at Lisa Latta’s racing stables in Christchurch followed. When Sarah moved back to the Waikato, she took on employment at a breaking-in and pretraining

establishment in Matamata. She also worked on a stud farm, preparing yearlings for the sales. Sarah continues preparing yearlings for sales, as well as running her own small stud farm, Willow Creek Farm. The stud farm was established two years ago in Morrinsville, but recently relocated to the Bay of Plenty. Joy’s long and varied involvement with horses dates back to 1960. Not only did this include pleasure riding, showing horses and racing, but Joy also founded and established the national registered horse welfare charity, Horsewatch NZ (HWNZ). When Joy’s health deteriorated, due to a previous blood disease progressing to a rare form of blood

Sarah Thompson and Joy O’Connor have always loved horses and both women have personal links to cancer. Combining their equine expertise and resources, the pair are embarking on a project breeding horses with sale proceeds to be donated to child cancer charity, Gabby’s Starlit Hope.

cancer, she was forced to close HWNZ. “I still had the desire to continue contributing in a constructive way to a good cause,” she said. As a search began for a suitable stallion to send her mare, Nonna Quattro, to be bred with, an idea to help a charity also developed. “Due to Joy’s own personal circumstances, she wanted to find someone who would be willing to take Nonna on when her condition worsened,” said Sarah. “I then came up with an idea to donate any proceeds from the sale of the resulting foal to charity. “So the hunt began to find something small and personal that could benefit from a donation.” The pair also wanted to be able to follow the charity closely and help young children immediately, rather than trying to help fund research. When Sarah came across child cancer charity, Gabby’s Starlit Hope, she sent through the Facebook link to Joy. “Joy immediately knew that this was the charity we wanted to help and see smiles light up on the faces of kids, who are in situations that make life harder than it should be.” Joy said with her own personal link with cancer, Gabby’s Starlit Hope seemed the perfect choice. Starlit Hope was created by the late Gabby Devine in February 2013. A diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) in February 2012, meant Gabby had a year of intensive chemotherapy, radiation and major surgery to remove the remaining tumour. During this time, she spent

many months at Starship and Taranaki Base Hospitals. When Gabby completed her cancer treatment, she wanted to help oncology children in their cancer journey. She established Starlit Hope with the aim of doing random acts of kindness for oncology children, parents and occasionally oncology staff. A major part of this was providing oncology children in hospital with boredom boxes containing seven presents — one for the child to open each day for a week. Gabby passed away in 2015 at the age of 13. Joy’s mare, a six-year-old Thoroughbred, was initially being trained and prepared for life as a show hack. Unfortunately due to a serious accident, Nonna is no longer able to be ridden. “She has also had her share of setbacks, but is now 100% and ready to embark on her new endeavours,” said Joy. “The decision to join with Sarah Thompson of Willow Creek Farm, and her lovely palomino stallion, He’s All In A Twist, provides Nonna with an alternative productive purpose in life.” Joy said Nonna will now help contribute to the young cancer-affected children of New Zealand, as they undergo invasive treatment in hospital. The rising four-year-old palomino paint Quarter Horse/Stationbred cross stallion, He’s All In A Twist, stands at 15hh and was bred for his quality and trainable temperament. “Due to these passed-down traits from his sire and dam, coupled with his wonderful personality, I decided to stand him for stud duties,” said Sarah.

“So far this is paying off, with his progeny possessing the exact same traits.” Sarah and Joy aim for a special annual breeding between these two horses with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each foal donated to Gabby’s Starlit Hope. The pair are yet to decide whether this will be via tender or a set price. “Nonna Quattro has had two previous beautiful foals and we expect

the pairing with He’s All In A Twist will produce equally as stunning foals,” said Sarah. “We hope the public will follow both the resulting progeny and the charity as it is such a deserving cause.” The horses’ progress can be followed at facebook.com/willow.creek.horse. transport/ and facebook.com/NonnasLegacy-1721742487882478/

The fuss about phytophthora by Erica Faber, Orchard Productivity Manager, Just Avocados Ltd

‘This government is for the regions — yeah, right?’ by Matt King, MP for Northland

Phytophthora root rot (PRR) is the most serious avocado disease worldwide that limits production. It is the result of root infection caused by a soil-borne water mould, Phytophthora cinnamomi (Pc). As the name water mould suggests, it requires moist conditions to thrive. Zoospores swim in the soil water and find and infect the roots — the food source. Following infection, water and nutrient uptake through the roots become restricted as the root system is destroyed, until, if left untreated the plant dies. In order to manage PRR effectively, an integrated approach of cultural and chemical control, as well as rootstock selection, needs to be adopted. If you are using chemical control alone, you are only treating the symptoms and not changing the conditions under which Pc is thriving. Research on developing Pc resistant or tolerant rootstocks has been a major focus of avocado research worldwide. The use of tolerant clonal rootstocks; e.g. Dusa, to control Phytophthora root rot is proposed as being the ultimate method for managing this disease. Try improving drainage, soil solarisation, water management, and improving nutrition. The addition of mulches, composts, humates, mycorrhizal fungi and Trichoderma will also ensure higher percentages of microorganisms within the soil that are antagonistic to Phytophthora. Phosphonate fungicides can improve an avocado tree’s ability to tolerate, resist

or recover from Phytophthora root rot infection. Phosphonate application can be done by trunk injecting or foliar spraying. It is important to time the application of phosphonate accurately in order for the concentration in the roots to be high enough and effective in controlling the disease. Research and phosphonate root analysis has shown that the best results are from autumn applications made after the summer flush has hardened off and when competition from other organs (leaf flush or fruit sizing) are no longer dominant. However, over time, once chemical activity has subsided, Phytophthora once again resumes growth within infected roots. This is why an integrated approach, including rootstock selections and cultural controls as mentioned above, is important in managing Phytophthora effectively. Monitoring root phosphonate concentrations and Pc levels by taking root samples are as important as monitoring soil and leaf nutrient concentrations. If we are not measuring, we cannot manage effectively or improve on what we are doing. Contact the Grower Services Team at Just Avocados for more details on winning the war against Phythophthora — justavocados.co.nz/contact.

Regional New Zealand has been hammered by the hands of this Ardern-Peters government, most recently by the announcement of a ban on any new offshore exploration. The announcement was kept secret until just before the prime minister’s trip to Europe to allow her to tell international media about it. And so continues the coalition government’s raid on the back pockets and futures of hard-working New Zealanders. In just six months, the Ardern-Peters government has axed National’s tax package, which would have seen the average worker more than $1,000 a year better off, announced an 11.5 cents a litre fuel tax in Auckland, proposed an additional nationwide fuel tax of up to 13.8 cents a litre and gutted $5 billion from regional roading projects. They’ve axed funding for regional irrigation projects, which would have helped farmers and growers deal with severe weather, providing certainty, jobs and export growth. And they’ve announced large-scale industrial relations reform, which will see fewer jobs created and fewer opportunities for people looking to enter the workforce. These are just some examples, but they add up to a real, negative impact

on the lives and livelihoods of hardworking New Zealanders and on our national prosperity. They will mean lower incomes, fewer jobs and a higher cost of living. The petrol tax alone will mean motorists are paying up to an extra $15 every time they fill up. It will also mean we are all paying more for things like groceries as freight operators are forced to pass their costs on. Regions like ours are being put on the backburner. For a government that campaigned on helping regional development, we have already been short-changed, and we’re only six months in. The government has turned its back on the Northland region, and it seems to be all about Auckland. People here are giving me their reactions to what is happening, and I want you to keep giving me this feedback as it is an essential component of the job I do for the region. Rather than stand in their way, this government needs to get in behind New Zealanders, and National will be working to ensure they do.

ENABLING HEALTHY SHEARING SHEDS BY ANN MORGAN Mark and Megan Turton decided there has to be a better way to clean the effluent buildup from under woolsheds to help farmers have a healthier environment, so the couple set about inventing a solution.

B

ased in Dannevirke, Megan was a teacher aide at a local primary school and Mark is a fencing contractor and the ‘cleansweep’ now keeps the couple busy travelling to various destinations with their ‘cleansweep’ machine making woolsheds an environmentally friendlier place to work. “I spent time as a dairy farmer and then got into fencing some 30 years ago,” says Mark. “We have six guys employed at Turton Fencing Ltd creating all types of fences, but mostly farm and security, as well as pole sheds. We are always looking for an opportunity to excel ourselves

and that is how we came up with the shearing shed clearing machine. “I gave a guy a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed and he had a big vacuum cleaner. The day was terrible and wet, and the machine didn’t work well at all — we spent all our time unblocking it as it kept clogging.“ Mark thought there must be something easier to use for the job, but there wasn’t. “I asked myself a few questions and came up with a sideways bulldozer system with a hydraulic motor. Every time we trialled it, we saw ten things wrong but one thing that worked, so we

Mark Turton invented the ‘cleansweep’ to help farmers, shearers and animals have a healthier woolshed environment

kept pushing ahead. It has taken a lot of time and investment to get to where we are today, but it is definitely worth the effort.” Mark says the machine is versatile and can work on wet ground; whereas a sucking machine gets blocked. “Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons — all the manure is there, and using the ‘cleansweep’ you don’t have to be amongst it. The machine self-steers and operating from the outside can reach to 20-30 metres. We assess every job prior for quoting and our service is a fast and cost-effective way of getting your shed cleaned. “Farmers get the sheep in overnight so they aren’t wet for the shearer, who wants to rock up and get the job done — no shearer wants to shear wet animals. The sheep also sweat whilst in the shed, so keeping the base clean keeps air circulating through the building. “Overnight the animals empty out and the waste drops through the grating and underneath the building gets built-up. Before long years have passed and then it is too much of an issue for the farmer and it gets put in the ‘too hard’ basket — suddenly manure is coming up through the grating and creates issues such as the ammonia smell, lack of air circulation and the wool gets stains. “We are making the job simple for farmers and they don’t have to handle it themselves, and the end product is great fertiliser that the client keeps. Some people give it to the local school or clubs to sell, or it is spread on paddocks.” Mark says it is important

The product removed from under the shed is often used as fertiliser on paddocks or donated to schools and clubs for fundraisers having a clean shed, as this creates a healthy space on many levels. “Besides the sheep having good airflow, the piles and rafters aren’t designed to have manure around them, so for all the right reasons it needs to be clean under the shed. Having us do it removes a lot more stress than people realise, the end result is no ammonia smell, no wool staining and we can do

a maintenance plan for future years. “We also clean the count out pens — when the sheep is shorn it goes down a chute to the pens. They generally take a bit of wool with them each time — this sits at the bottom and packs together like concrete. The machine digs into that and grinds it off as well. “It is good to get rid of that buildup, because before you know it is 3-4

foot thick and the animals have trouble getting out. “We are now looking at building a second machine and going to the Gisborne area, as we are sure they could use our services. “We believe clean sheds means less stress and happy shearers and animals, clean wool, and of course, happy farmers.”

Extraction consents granted

Resource consent has been granted for a commercial kauri resin and wax extraction operation covering roughly 10 per cent of the Far North’s 4,000-plus hectare Kaimaumau wetland. Auckland-based Resin & Wax Holdings Ltd applied to the Northland Regional Council last year for a raft of consents needed for the staged extraction of resin and wax from peat taken from 400ha of wetland that forms part of a wider almost 950ha block now owned by Ngai Takoto. “Initially extraction is proposed over an area of up to five hectares annually, increasing to 20ha a year if the operation reaches full production,” says NRC’s Colin Dall. “The recently-issued non-notified consent was granted because — subject to extensive conditions imposed — any adverse effects of the proposed activity on the environment will be ‘no more than minor’. The consented area excludes Department of Conservationmanaged wetlands to the north, and Kaimaumau’s scientific reserve, both of which the council says will not be affected by the extraction operation. “A large part of the property involved is already modified due to past

activities, however; the applicant will be re-establishing the more ecologically significant areas of existing indigenous vegetation and will also be taking special measures to minimise any adverse effects on any threatened species in the areas they’ll be working in. “Most of the peat removed from the wetland will be returned to it once the resin and wax have been extracted. The peat shrinks by about 10 per cent as a result of the resin and wax extraction process, after which it will be re-wetted, returned to roughly the same area it was taken from, topped up with soil and sand and then reinstated with previously stripped topsoil.” Proposed extraction areas will be confined to places previously disturbed by Kaurex — which mined peat there in the 1980s — and by subsequent farming operations, later stages will include areas of burnt shrubland. “The land involved is now owned by Ngai Takoto and covers an area of almost 950ha known as Mekerene.

SMOKE ALARMS Save Lives BE FIRE SAFE THIS WINTER

404ha is proposed for peat extraction operations over four stages, with 107ha proposed to be restored with indigenous vegetation. “Ngai Takoto approves of the applicant’s plans and is keen to ensure future productive use of its property. The development will provide some land suitable for activities including livestock farming and horticultural enterprises, and any kauri logs and stumps excavated during the peat extraction will also be put aside for use by Ngai Takoto.” Relatively flat, the land involved is made up of series of low sand ridges interspersed with peat soils generally two to five metres deep. It adjoins Motutangi Wetland to the north, Lake Waikaramu to the east, Kaimaumau Road to the south and farmland to the west. “If extraction was undertaken continuously, the newly-consented operations authorised by the NRC could be completed over about eight years. Following discussions with the applicant, a consent term of 20 years (to October 31, 2038) was considered appropriate as it will allow sufficient time for setup of the processing plant and provide adequate security for investors.” The various consents allow drainage of land, vegetation clearance and earthworks, taking and use of surface water, damming and diverting surface

water (and installing associated structures) and discharging stormwater. The consent does not authorise any taking of groundwater from the Aupouri aquifer. Consent conditions include a $20,000 bond and detailed requirements for a range of measures to ensure appropriate ecological, archaeological and cultural protection. These included a requirement for management plans for ecological monitoring , ear thwor ks and revegetation. “Even with the newly-issued regional council consents, the applicant must also obtain a Crown permit before any resin and wax extraction can begin. This is because kauri resin and wax are legally classed as minerals and as such the applicant will also need a Crown mining permit. “A previous mining licence covering an area of 1,450ha — including the newly-consented area — expired in July last year. “An application for a new permit is currently being processed separately by New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals, which is part of Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.” Full details of both the consent application and decision are available from the regional council’s website nrc. govt.nz/consentdecisions.

What should I look for in a tyre? You should look for a tyre which best suits your driving requirements. Tyres are manufactured for almost every requirement; wet or dry traction, high mileage, high speed control, steering response, ride comfort etc. A tyre professional will be able to advise you of product features. There are so many brands and models to choose from. How do I know which one is best for me? Discussing your needs with a tyre professional will help establish a tyre product that best suits your requirements and your budget. A professional tyre person will ask questions regarding your expectations of the product, the type of driving you do, how long you expect to keep your vehicle etc. A salesperson who just asks you what size you want is not ensuring you receive the most suitable tyre value. How can I tell when it is time to replace my old tyres? Most automobile tyres have a built-in tread wear indicator in the tread area of the tyre. This wear indicator will show when there are 3mm remaining on the tread. Depending on your driving habits or conditions you should replace the tyre no later than when the wear indicator is visible. Consult a tyre professional when tyres show signs of wear. The wear on my tyres look strange. What causes this? Wear problems could have a variety of causes. The problem could be caused by over or under inflation of the tyre, mechanical problems or the need for an alignment (caster, camber or toe).

WHY IS MY SPA WATER CLOUDY? Has your spa had a lot of use recently? The spa may need a shock dose of sanitiser to oxsidise the water. Also have you checked your filter? Your spa filter should be rinsed weekly and soaked monthly in a filter cleaning solution. This will remove the body fats & oils that build up and prolong the life of your filter. Ideally have a second filter that you can swap over. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE THE WATER IN MY SPA? As a general rule you should change the water every 8–12 weeks depending on use. WHY SHOULD I TEST AND BALANCE THE WATER IN MY SPA? Unbalanced water can be uncomfortable on the skin and make your sanitiser less effective. It can also cause corrosion, staining and etching of your spa and lead to scale formation on equipment and spa surfaces. We offer free computerised water testing for our customers And we offer great free coffee! with an easy step by step guide for chemical additions.

Serving the community

BE THE SOBER D FOR a NIGHT

Volunteering for the local Fire Brigade or Fire Force is very different to what many people imagine, and these days there is a job for anyone no matter their age, fitness or availability. Deputy principal rural fire officer for Northland, Rory Renwick, says there are many benefits to becoming a volunteer with Fire and Emergency. “Some people like the excitement of not knowing what you’re going to be facing next and the chaos associated with some of the incidents and then bringing order to that chaos. Some people like the social aspect of being part of the station and part of the community. For the majority of our people, it is a really good feeling being able to help other people in the community when that need arises.” Volunteers must be 16 years of age or over — those under 18, need consent from a parent or guardian. Other than that, almost anyone can become a volunteer — male or female, young or old. Deputy principal rural fire officer, Clinton Lyall, says someone can even choose to be in a role where they are not exposed to emergency situations. “It’s not all about firefighting. We are pretty open to customising things for communities. People just need to talk to us or their local fire force and get some ideas.” The role a volunteer plays for Fire Emergency New Zealand depends both on the needs of the local brigade and the skills the individual can offer them. The one aspect all roles have in common is the regular training nights and participating in brigade activities. The first step in volunteering is to read about the medical and security checks required to join Fire and Emergency New Zealand and for more information about your local station visit fireandemergency. nz/find-a-station.8

A unique ultraviolet show that aims to bring the magic of Matariki to local children and their families will visit Dargaville in June. Heaven and Earth — Rangi and Papa is a full ultraviolet light and large-scale puppet show suitable for all ages based on the legend of Matariki. Creator Sarah Burren and the woman behind the Little Green Man production company had wanted to produce something that celebrated Matariki for a while and was inspired when she met up with people at The Purple Room in Whangarei, a collaborative space for performing artists. “We collaborate with like-minded artists who do new innovative cuttingedge work. “I got to meet all these amazing people including people from Creative Northland. They said; ‘Don’t forget Dargaville’ because it’s on a limb and a lot of children miss out on really good stuff.” The show sits within the current New Zealand School curriculum, and Sarah says it offers a rich educational learning experience. The production first toured last year and was so successful they decided to do a second one and bring it to places they hadn’t been to before. This Matariki they will bring the show to ten venues across Northland from the Far North to South Auckland over six weeks. “We want grandchildren, parents,

Rescue helicopter update

19

Last summer’s mix of beautiful weather, and the odd unseasonal storm, has kept the crew at Northland Rescue Helicopter busy. “We attended 332 rescues from December to April, which is slightly less than last year, and that’s great news because while we are here to help save lives, the less people who need rescuing, the better,” says Northland Emergency Services Trust chief pilot, Peter Turnbull. “With autumn in full swing and winter rapidly approaching we are urging people to take notice of the changing conditions both while going about your job and when you are out enjoying Northland. “Earlier this year, as part of a new partnership with the NZ Fire Service, we airlifted two firefighters from our base in Whangarei to a crash in Titoki where a van carrying a trailer with two calves collided with a van, trapping the driver by her legs. “We were able to carry the firefighters, extra life-saving equipment, and our paramedics to the site to assist local firefighters in extracting the driver from the vehicle. We then flew the woman to Whangarei Hospital for treatment.” NEST are currently in planning to give the flight simulator an update and officially welcomed Alice Rule to the ambassador family. “Our flight simulator will be out of action for a few months in the second half of the year — but never fear, it will be back better than ever,” says Mr Turnbull.

No matter how unusual the requirement may be, their unique experience and expert knowledge mean it is likely they have come across it before, and if not, they have the depth of experience to design a solution to suit. Customers have great confidence in the quality and durability of their installations, and this is backed up with warranties that they believe are second to none in the industry. Crompton Engineering has been assisting Northlanders since 1976 supplying New Zealand’s farming industry with everything they need to get the most out of their fields. Their early work found them heavily involved in the buoyant agricultural sector, working on a range of industrial projects including the Marsden B power

station, oil refinery expansion, various bridge building projects, and extensive conveyor manufacture for the local fertiliser industry. Nowadays their focus is to become New Zealand’s specialists in flood control, building and installing floodgates, pumps, headstocks, steel culverts, and whatever else is needed to allow farmers to best manage their water resources. If you have a problem that requires a complex solution call Crompton Engineering for advice. When it comes to glass needs reliability is important, and Kaikohe Glass and Windscreens are authorised Smith&Smith dealers and suppliers and can repair or replace any damaged car glass, and all their workmanship carries a guarantee. Being practical and wise With winter upon us getting the most out of outdoor areas and ensuring projects get done efficiently is made simple with the help of the right specialists. Checking your buildings and belongings are as safe as possible should a storm hit starts with maintenance and safety checks. Ensure any trees or hedges near built-up areas are in a healthy state and if there are dead or broken branches connected to the tree or you are concerned about the general height or condition, calling a professional arborist is recommended. In any building, faulty wiring is dangerous and has the potential to cause a fire or electrocution. If you have electrical concerns finding a reputable qualified electrician is important. Even the smallest installation of a new light fixture to the complete rewiring of a house or cowshed needs an expert. By law, a Certificate of Compliance or Electrical Safety Certificate should be presented to you when certain work has been carried out as validation that it complies with safety requirements. To extend your outdoor living spaces for extra use, particularly over the winter period, consider installing an outdoor blind or Triax System. The Triax is a waterproof shade structure of lightweight construction that can be joined at any angle without welding. It is adaptable and difficult site restrictions can be easily overcome. When it comes to earthworks, cartage or general contracting needs hire an experienced contractor who has gained a reputation for reliability and cost-effectiveness with earthworks, roading, cartage, house

Solving farming problems When you’ve got a problem on the farm or at home who is the first person you think to call? Is it your mother? Your neighbour? Or, an expert? If it’s a bee problem you have, then it’s best to leave it to the experts before ending up in a sticky or ‘stingy’ situation. It is not recommended that the unequipped try to remove bees themselves, but it isn’t always necessary to call in the exterminators. It’s possible to have bees removed humanely and often even free of charge. Some beekeepers do not charge for this service. A bee swarm is a fascinating sight, although it may be unnerving to some people. A dense cloud of bees buzzing overhead can strike fear into the hearts of the hardiest of farmers. It’s important to remember that a bee swarm isn’t looking to attack you but simply a new place to call home. In doing so, a honey bee swarm may rest

in a particular place whilst scout bees go off to find a suitable place to make a permanent nest. It always pays to call a beekeeper first to see if they would be willing to collect your swarm or can offer you some helpful tips as to how to remove them. For other agricultural tasks such as silage, groundwork, air seeding, crop spraying, effluent and muck spreading give the friendly team at Henty Agriculture Ltd a call. They have the answers to all your specialist needs and are not afraid to get stuck in and get the job done. If it’s a query of a more leisurely kind such as marine or boating or you need metal repairs, aluminium fabricators or beekeepers, Northern Marine is open 24 hours every day of

the week and have all the solutions. The team at Northern Marine are committed to excellence and have materials matched to the job to the meet the standard of finish required. You can depend on their team of

respected trades people from initial contact through to the completion of your project whatever that may be. So next time you find yourself in a sticky situation, give mum or dad a break and leave it to the experts.

Soil solutions for Northland

Your local servicing & Sales agent for all brands of:

Northern Kiwi Fertiliser representative Sam Leijen spent his early years running around on farms in Ruawai, so he knows a thing or two about Northland. Kiwi Fertiliser specialises in improving soil fertility to farmers and growers all over New Zealand. In the early 80s Sam worked on various farms and in 1986 he joined the dairy industry before studying at Massey University. He then moved to the Waikato with his wife Linda and their two children. “In 2015, I resigned from Fonterra. Linda and I went overseas for 11 months, to South America, Europe and Australia. During our trip away I had been reading a lot about soil health and became very passionate about it, particularly from what I had seen overseas,” he said. “I joined Kiwi Fertiliser in January 2017 as a soil fertility adviser using the Kinsey-Albrecht principle, which gives quantifiable and repeatable results.” The team at Kiwi Fertiliser believe soil fertility is not just about selling fertiliser products. Each custom blend is about meeting the exact requirements for each farm or parts of farms. “The Kiwi Fertiliser soil programme is committed to environmental sustainability and returning the profits back to the farmers. Soil health affects plant health, animal health and the health of our environment.”

Keeping healthy and happy by Ann Morgan

There is a variety of things farmers are doing to keep themselves and their staff happy and healthy during the various cycles of the year. surfing, hunting, playing sports or going for a bike ride with the children. Some families eat dinner around the table every night without technology present and they each share one good thing and one bad thing from the day. This provides an opportunity to know what each person is up to rather than being constantly work focussed. During calving or lambing, some people stop and spend a few minutes each day watching the babies play as the sun sets as a simple reminder of why they farm — whilst others walk on the farm as often as possible. Put together a budget and a plan, so you know your financial position instead of sticking your head in the sand and if necessary discuss succession plans and the future of the farm. Always have a bowl of fresh fruit on the bench at home and the cow or woolshed. If you are out for the day, make sure you have good sustenance with you in the form of nuts, sandwiches and *T&C’s apply.

Whether it be calving or lambing season, harvesting or shearing, keeping personal and staff wellbeing a priority is more important. There are many initiatives and ideas to try to stay well in these busy times. DairyNZ research shows there are key contributors to a person’s overall wellness and it will be a different experience that will work for each person. Some people enjoy catching up with other farmers and see how they are doing things differently and have a healthy discussion over farm systems to keep on top of their game. Others read farming or industry papers and magazines and attend local events with staff or hand on the information for everyone to gain knowledge. Understanding osteoarthritis

Trusting in rural support Living and working rurally can be a challenge and knowing there is support available in life is a vital part of the rural community.

by John Arts

Part 2 Last week we saw that damage to specialised cartilage cells called chondrocytes was the first step in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Research suggests that chondrocytes can be damaged by physical damage from accidents or gradually probably from insufficient dietary antioxidants. Cartilage is a tough matrix that includes living chondrocytes. The matrix of cartilage is a combination of proteins (mostly collagen), glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and water. The most abundant GAG is chondroitin sulphate. In my opinion, adding correct amounts of high-grade chondroitin is the single most important part of OA therapy. Cartilage is 80% water, which is why it acts as a shock absorber. GAG such as chondroitin readily attracts water. This is an important reason to stay well hydrated — a real problem with our ageing population. Cartilage then has two main components. What you see is the tough cartilage matrix. What you don’t see is the tiny chondrocytes tucked away in tiny cocoons called lacunae. When working properly, chondrocytes act like repair kits for cartilage. They actively

secrete new cartilage matrix when damaged or worn. My nutritional therapy for OA is firstly based on protecting chondrocytes by adding antioxidants. These include curcumin from turmeric but others such as trace minerals like selenium and grape seed extract. We then add compounds that help stimulate chondrocytes to make cartilage especially chondroitin but also glucosamine. I have one client who had a damaged shoulder and hip. Both caused him real problems. We increased antioxidants and added my joint complex, and he reports he is largely pain-free. I like to initially add 1500mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine with about 400mg of 95% curcumin extract (from turmeric). This is usually sufficient to start the healing process and often bring significant relief. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. If more than a cup of tea and a yarn is needed, Rural Support Trust can connect people with the professionals who can provide further support, including farming or business advice, financial information, health, mental health and counselling services. The trusts cover all aspects of rural agribusiness; dry stock, dairy, cropping, horticulture, forestry, poultry, and rural contracting. Submissions well up More than 2,200 submissions have been received on the Northland Regional Council’s ‘ambitious’ Long Term Plan 2018–2028. A month-long period for public submissions closed on April 17, and the response delighted council chairman Bill Shepherd. The council are impressed by and appreciative of the level of community interest in its proposals. “We have some big decisions to make, and we rely on community feedback like this to help us make them,” says chairman Shepherd. “It is great to get such a large amount of feedback and council will now be very carefully reading the reasoning people have provided when making their submissions — in a nutshell; we want to know why you think what you think.” When the official public submission period began last month, chairman Shepherd described the LTP as ‘ambitious’, saying it reflected community calls for the council to do more to clean up waters, protect native species and provide better flood protection. While rates would have to rise to cover the costs of this work, he says initial indications are that there’s strong support for the ‘big three’ region-wide consultation topics of water, pests and flood infrastructure funding.

“Obviously, with more than 2,200 submissions to process and the formal submission period only ending very recently, it will take another few days to accurately log and collate all these responses in detail. “During the for mal submission period, the council also held a series of ‘Have Your Say’ events around the region, enabling people to give feedback directly to councillors. “These March 20–27 events were held instead of a more formal hearing process, and again, we received some really useful feedback on our plans covering the entire spectrum of opinions.” The Have Your Say events were held in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Dargaville and Mangawhai — with attendance varying, from just Bill Shepherd, Northland Regional Council chair a single person at Mangawhai through to more than 60 at Kaitaia. compiling a detailed deliberations Chairman Shepherd says once all report for councillors, who would also submissions have been formally be provided with copies of all 2,200logged and recorded, staff would begin plus submissions.

Securing exports partnership

BE THE SOBER D FOR a NIGHT

The signing of a partnership between New Zealand Customs and dairy exporter Synlait Milk Limited that will see the company joining the Customs Secure Exports Scheme has been welcomed. Customs Minister, Meka Whaitiri, visited the Synlait head office in Dunsandel, near Christchurch where she presented the certificate of partnership signed by Customs and Synlait. “New Zealand’s SES scheme gives members greater certainty at international borders and ensures minimal delay, and this partnership is an endorsement of the exporter’s standards of security on its chain of supply,” she said. “Synlait is one of the country’s most successful dairy businesses with a range of value-added products, including infant formula and milk powders. I am pleased they have joined this partnership, and I am confident they will find real benefits in the scheme.”

Reducing carbon emissions Fonterra’s Brightwater dairy factory is set to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 25 per cent following an industry first move that will significantly reduce the site’s reliance on coal. Thanks to funding support from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, conversion is about to get underway on Brightwater’s existing coal boiler, adding capacity to burn wood biomass to generate steam. The move will cut emissions from the factory by around 2,400 tonnes a year — roughly the same as taking 530 cars off the road. Fonterra chief operating officer global operations, Robert Spurway, says the move to a co-fired boiler decreases reliance on fossil fuels and is a significant step towards achieving Fonterra’s emission reduction targets. “Last year we joined forces with the Ministry for the Environment to develop a roadmap to a low emissions future, which included a commitment to undertake a demonstration of co-firing wood biomass with coal at one of our sites,” he said. “Now, with the support of EECA, we are putting our co-firing strategy into action. Brightwater’s transition to a lower emission energy source is a tangible step toward achieving our target of reducing our Global Operations emissions by 30 per cent by 2030, and our longer-term goal of net zero emissions by 2050.”

EECA business group manager market engagement, Greg Visser, says the boiler technology has the potential to be a sustainability game-changer. “This is exactly the type of demonstration project that EECA looks to support. Our funding helps de-risk investment in new technology application where there are big emissions reductions on offer. It’s a

great opportunity for replication across Fonterra — and by others looking to adopt this technology to save energy.” The move to convert the existing coal boiler at Brightwater follows a successful trial that was undertaken in 2017. It is expected that the boiler will be able to co-fire with wood biomass by October this year.

LIVESTOCK is a specific association they can join, and it is an amazing opportunity for big competition. We had guest speakers at our ceremony — paraders Cara Doggett and Angel Somerville, Northern District Royal Agricultural Society chairman Kevin Cholmondeley-Smith, and national RAS president Geoff Smith.” “Angel started presenting calves at calf clubs at four years old, and her goal is to own a herd of Holsteins and Ayrshires. Cara has been showing beef cattle at A&P shows for ten years and represented the Northern Region in a Hawke’s Bay competition. “Mr Cholmondeley-Smith said the RAS emphasis on youth promotion had been extremely successful, with young people learning good stock confirmation and husbandry skills which enable them to also compete overseas,” says Courtney. “Some seniors mentor the juniors and Angel, and Cara spoke on how they got to where they are now. We have people from many different backgrounds — some live in the city and have an animal on someone’s property, or they borrow from another competitor. It is not about coming from a top showing family; it is about having an interest and being willing to learn to be the best cattle shower you can be. “We want it to have a positive environment and give good feedback to the competitors. You aren’t judged on the type of breed but rather how you handle, show and care for your animal. We are making it as non-political as possible so that it is a fun experience and there have been many young judges as well throughout the season. It is refreshing that the participants can relate to each other, including those.” Older youth can enter the pedigree class that was established to bridge the gap between junior and senior competing

Even receiving a fourth place ribbon is encouraging — it is not all about first place, it is about achieving and being rewarded for your effort. “You are judged on how you parade your animal; if the halter is held correctly and if the head is at the right height,

Of the entire new Holden Commodore range — a noteworthy first departure from the days of Australian design and production, but one with its own sense of style — there’s one vehicle, which stands out as still forcefully Kiwi. Or, to be generous, a bit Aussie too. That car is the Holden Commodore Tourer, a four-wheel drive, V6 turbo powered station wagon which bucks all kinds of trends. Firstly, it’s a station wagon in a world gone mad for SUVs. Sports utilities from the tiny to the gargantuan roam the roads in packs these days — Nissan’s catalogue, for example, features two sports cars but a whole family of crossovers and full-fledged S-Us. We have been told for some time now that the station wagon is headed for the scrap heap of history, and that the big four-door sedan is following so close behind you’d think it was being towed. Not so, says Holden, boldly

putting forward a brand new car in 2018, which manages to evoke those summer holidays in the back of the Berlina while being utterly light years ahead of those old wagons of yesteryear. The new Commodore may be just as German in its underpinnings as an Audi Avant or a big Merc, but it just feels right for our local roads. The price is right too when compared to other large ‘estates’ from Europe, all of which top $100k in local dollars. And while the option for a roaring V8 behind the lion badge is

gone, the able and willing turbocharged V6 you’ll find in Holden’s tourer more than gets the job done. Most of those ancestral dad-owned Holden, Ford and Chrysler station wagons were straight six affairs anyhow — and lacked the fuel economy, real-world power or nine-speed automatic gearbox of this modern iteration. That’s the other thing you’ll notice about the Tourer — badged with the evocative name of Calais on these shores. There are a whole lot of bells and whistles included, which those old station wagons we remember lacked.

Not just seats made of a kinder material than scorching hot summer vinyl — remember that? No, there’s also a heads-up display, ventilated seats, an invisible army of safety programs and features, and even a hands-free tailgate for loading and unloading all that camping gear. The Tourer, then, neatly answers the question ‘do I really want a new Commodore?’ by asking another one ‘Do you really need an SUV?’ If safety, space and a smooth ride are your thing — along with a certain sense of Kiwi family tradition — this is an understatedly cool ride.

SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM

LOOK OUT FOR YOUR WORK MATES

Conquest of the unknown by Andy Bryenton

We live in a nation where adventure tourism is king — people from all over the planet have New Zealand on their bucket list for our dramatic scenery and wild open spaces. With few wild animals to menace the outdoors trekker and a dizzying choice of terrains, from tundra to mountains to rainforests, it’s easy to see why we’re a top pick for the adventurous. And hard to see why many Kiwis haven’t explored their own backyard. A great way to remedy this situation is the classic combo of a road trip and two wheels. Adventure motorcycling has come a long way in recent years, and the price of getting on board a machine capable of bashing through the old Paris to Dakar or beating the Baja is more reasonable than ever. At the same time, technology has beefed up the bare-bones image of the old endurance motorcycle, so that now it’s easier than ever to travel in comfort. Leave your hiking shoes behind and get on board the latest Suzuki V-Strom — the formidable 1000x ABS. For novices, there’s always the 650cc model, but the big one-litre four-stroke is truly top of the tree when it comes to adventurous riding. With beefy power delivered by that thumping big v-twin mill — set low down in the frame for better weight distribution — and a six-speed box delivering power via some serious rubber, the latest V-Strom lives up to its lineage with grip and torque aplenty. Both front and rear suspensions are fully adjustable, and this is where the

techno-magic begins — that ABS in the name stands for one of the most advanced antilock and braking systems fitted to an adventure bike. Squeeze the front brake, and the rear brake comes on progressively for a safer stop. Anti-lock technology has been taken to a new extreme, coming online not just when the bike is straight up and down, but also when it’s leaned into the corners. This inspires confidence, as does the intuitive riding position, the easy to read and understand control layout and the sheer low-down power of the V-Strom. Those who have previously not ventured off the tarmac of the open highway will take to the gravel and mud with ease, while those weaned on farm bikes and quads will find this a perfect hand in

glove fit — just far more fun. There’s very little which beats being outside and part of the environment, and adventure riders know this feeling well. Introduce yourself to the latest V-Strom at your local Suzuki dealership and get the most out of New Zealand’s natural ‘adventure playground’.
