Otuihau-Hatea water quality project

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES May 2019

Landowners with properties upstream of the iconic Whangarei Falls are being urged to take advantage of a three-year project to improve water quality in the area as the initiative enters its final 12 months. The jointly funded Northland Regional Council-Ministry for the Environment project technically runs until March 31 next year, but its backers say given any work financed under it needs to have been completed and signed off by that date, to all intents and purposes the actual deadline will be late-February. Those keen to apply for funding can drop by an upcoming Saturday, May 4, 9am to noon open day at Whangarei’s Farmlands Kamo to learn more about what is involved and learn about planting site preparation and weed and pest control. “A total of 32 funded projects have been completed during the past two years. That included nine kilometres of streamside fencing completed, almost 4,200 new plants in the ground and installation of 17 stock troughs as of the end of March this year,” says the Northland Regional Council’s eastern coast land manager, Lorna Douglas. The three-year $400,000-plus project focusses on improving water quality by contributing funding for riparian fencing and planting. Providing funds for stock troughs, where needed; to help enable fencing and signage at the falls reserve and to educate the community on the values of the water there and what people can do to help. “The catchment above the falls is a reasonably small one of about 4,000 hectares, which runs as far north as Snake Hill and west up Three Mile Bush Rd to Cowshed Lane and east along Ngunguru Rd to Harris Rd,” says Ms Douglas. The area has struggled with water quality issues. Livestock and wildfowl have all previously been identified as key sources of bacteria in the water there, with this year’s hot summer and lower water flows, also likely to have impacted water quality.

Lorna Douglas, Northland Regional Council’s eastern coast land manager

Councillor David Sinclair says fencing stock away from waterways can not only help reduce bacterial levels; it also lessens the amount of sediment finding its way into the water from streambank erosion, which can improve water clarity too. “Stronger rules proposed by the Whangarei Harbour Catchment Group to help improve water quality are also due to come into force within the next couple of years under the council’s Proposed Regional Plan. “These will also help, as they will legally require landowners to fence stock out of waterways upstream of a number of identified swimming sites, including Whangarei Falls. “That fund most likely won’t be available after the end of this project, so landowners may have to fund the fencing themselves to be compliant with new regional rules and avoid potential compliance/regulatory action.” To check potential eligibility for scheme funding should contact Ms Douglas on 027 672 0005 or email lornad@nrc.govt.nz or visit the open day.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

STUDENT’S CADETSHIP

by Ann van Engelen

Northland student Devlin Gurr is aiming for the top and hoping to land a cadetship at Smedley Station in Hawke’s Bay as a way to advance his farming dream.

“G

aining a place at Smedley is quite prestigious. They only accept 11 cadets each year, and it is really hard to get into,” said Devlin. The 16-year-old spent the start of the recent school holidays developing skills he will need to help with his application for the two-year cadetship. “I was one of 15 students selected to attend a three-day leadership programme in Rotorua. It was extremely rewarding and beneficial,” said Devlin. “I live on an eight-hectare lifestyle block with my family. We have 10 rising two-year-olds and nine yearlings of a mixed bunch, but we are about to sell them as I am focussing on starting my own Angus stud.

“I became interested in farming through a school friend and family friends as well. They would take me on tractor rides, and that is where it all began. I started helping around the farm and really enjoyed it — I can’t imagine working in an office.” The Raising the Standards course Devlin attended was run by NZ Young Farmers and funded by DairyNZ. It was designed to enhance the skills of emerging leaders within high school TeenAg clubs. Students learned about different graduate programmes, the wide range of agri-related scholarships on offer and how some agri-businesses encourage secondments overseas. “We learnt interview skills and how to build an eye-catching curriculum vitae

At sixteen years old Devlin Gurr is in the process of starting his own Angus Stud and is focusing on quality genetics

Devlin believes if an animal thrives well on hill country it will do exceptionally well on good land rather than just listing your skills and experience. We were taught how to set goals, communicate confidently, manage our time and think critically. There were numerous guest speakers, including agri-business bankers, consultants, an agronomist, a dairy farmer and a vet. We also toured Fonterra’s dairy factory in Reporoa, which produces a highly nutritious product used in hospitals for sick patients called sodium caseinate. “It was really eye-opening to see that there is more to the dairy industry than milking cows. I knew there were other jobs in processing and research, but not on the scale we saw. We also met students from other TeenAg clubs. I met Jack Nichols who lives 20 minutes down the road from me. We go to different schools and are already discussing how we can help each other out in the future.”

Devlin would like to gain a position at Smedley Station in Hawkes Bay as a way to advance his farming career

Devlin is planning to breed his own easy-calving Angus herd. “I am focussing on short gestation with low birth weights. I already own a heifer and plan to buy another 8 to 12 animals in the near future. I like Angus because of the large market range, and you are not just beef or dairy, but you are both. I work for Craig Davie-Martin at Puketi Angus Stud and I learnt quite a bit from him. He runs 350 breeding stock. I milk on a regular basis and work through PrimaryITO on a Monday instead of school and also work weekends and holidays for him. “His aim is low birth rates with a short gestation, which means you shouldn’t have calving problems as they are generally smaller. Depending on the genetics below it, Angus grow quickly, and Craig’s are a really good temperament. If they play up or are not

good on temperament, he refuses to sell them and removes them. “I believe if a cow thrives on hill country it will do even better on good land. Quality genetics means a good start and I hope to breed a large scale herd within the next few years. “You don’t have to come off a farm to be a good farmer. I want to go to Smedley because of how they run their systems and get the experience behind me instead of saying I have helped on a farm. The options are open at the moment for which direction I head in

the future, and multiple farm ownership would be my dream but how realistic that is will be interesting. “The courses available through TeenAg and Young Farmers clubs means lots of doors open. Meeting Jack was great, we are making plans to use my bulls over his beef cows for breeding in the future if all goes well. We will only be 18 or 19 and breeding cattle together. You have to start young because then we can get further ahead and we are excited for what the future holds in farming for us.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

• BY ANN VAN ENGELEN •

Twenty-eight-year-old Toa Henderson grew up in Kaiwaka and has made shearing his career. He won the Warkworth show’s open final in March, his first win in the top class and one of barely a handful of shows since finishing runner-up to brother Tane in the 2008 Golden Shears Senior final.

H

e beat former Golden Shears runner-up and multiple finalist Digger Balme, and former Golden Shears quarter-finalists Phil Wedd and Neville Osborne, both recent winners at shows in Northland. He beat Neville by four seconds in the race for fastest time, shearing the eight sheep

in 7 minutes 25 seconds, and had a comfortable winning margin of 2.08 points over runner-up Balme. “My family has been in the shearing industry for years, my grandfather and father were shearers. My dad taught my siblings and me when we were young, and I have carried on with the tradition,”

says Toa. “I went into shearing straight from school — it is all I knew growing up, and I enjoy everything about it. There isn’t much else you can do when your whole family does it. Being the youngest, I was the keenest to follow in dad’s footsteps, and am the only one left doing it. I have my own small run, which encompasses Kaiwaka, Wellsford and Ruawai and we also take care of some sheep in Helensville. I have three shearers, three rousies and a presser and we generally aim to shear 300–400 sheep a day.” Toa moved back to New Zealand last November after living in Australia for a few years. “I was helping my dad in his business over there and was involved in shearing as well. My mother has a big family here in Kaiwaka, and it was time for me to come home. On the off-season, I help my brothers out at Kauri Park Nurseries. We plant and load trees onto the trays and the trucks for delivery. “My advice to people wanting to get into shearing is to go for it. It is quite a dying breed because we don’t have as many in the country now due to the reduction in the amount of sheep farms. There are mainly only experienced shearers in the district now because a lot of property is being turned into developments or now run beef and dairy. Places like Takahoa Bay used to run sheep when it was a farm. In twenty years, from when I was eight years old until now the amount of sheep has dropped in Northland dramatically. “I used to compete, and the Warkworth Show was the first show I have competed in for years. I thought I would give it a crack and took it out. There were some good shearers competing and they had made the semi-finals at the Golden Shears the weekend before.” Toa says it is simply practise that makes you a good shearer.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

Toa Henderson has been involved in the shearing industry since he was a child and continues to enjoy the career

“You get the sheep in the yards and then you start shearing, they come in with wool on, and go out with no wool on. The wool is put in bails and sent away. It sounds easy but it is a big job, and it is simply practise that makes you do good at it. Actually wanting to be a shearer helps a lot, but after a few years of bending over sheep you can get sick of it, but I really enjoy it. “Shearing keeps the animals cool. It is unhealthy having wool in the hot weather as they get fly struck. The lambs grow better and can get around the paddock a lot easier when they are shorn and in winter. If they get wet and fall over, they can’t get up if the wool gets too heavy or if they are in mud and roll over that’s not good either. It

feels good after you finish a mob and you make good money. There is a lot of sheep down south because the country is so hilly there will always be sheep, so the career isn’t going to go away. “It is a great lifestyle, and I will carry on competing now and try and do it on a serious level going from Broadwood in the north all the way to the Golden Shears in the south.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

From Zimbabwe to Northland  by Ann van Engelen

Lorraine Ferreira began farming as an interim occupation after completing a bachelor of physical education and this year won the 2019 Northland Dairy Farm Manager of the Year competition.

T

he 31-year-old began relief milking whilst still at high school, after moving to New Zealand from Zimbabwe at 15 years old. She now manages the Fonterra Co-Operative Group’s farms in Hikurangi, Kauri and Jordan Valley Rd overseeing five staff and milking 400 cows. “Coming from Zimbabwe took some adjusting for my parents, it was easier for us children. We lost our farm with civil unrest so moved here to Ashburton to start a new life, but farming is so different, and they had to start their careers all over again,” says Lorraine. “My mum and dad met a farmer, and I helped on his farm on weekends and

during holidays. It was good money as a teenager and during uni. After completing my degree, I wanted to farm for a year to save; however, I ended up choosing it as my career. I was earning good money and had a house supplied, and the opportunities encouraged me to stay in the industry.” Friends in Canterbury moved back to Northland and encouraged Lorraine to apply for the job at Fonterra. “They used to manage the farms 15 years ago and insisted that my wife Lisa and I would enjoy it and I got the job, and we moved up with our 10-day-old baby daughter, Piper. Lisa was born in Tokoroa and moved to Canterbury and

climbed the dairy ladder similar to how I did — she was also an AI tech. “At present, we are doing farm maintenance, milking and calf weighing and scanning the heifers with the vet. We have a weekly meeting someone cooks lunch. This is a good time to chat and is especially important during calving as we get very busy. “I enjoy educating my staff on topics including new grass and teaching them about crickets and monitoring slug activity in the paddock. We collect bugs for monitoring and showing the staff what things could look like going forward. We have 64ha of new grass growing, and it is important nothing comes and destroys it.” The farm exports one million plus tons of silage every season, and receives wastewater from the Kauri milk plant. “This is the by-product from the milk processing if the factory receives three million litres of milk, the by-product goes through the treatment plant and put onto the land we manage our soils and grazing so we can receive the by-product in an environmentally friendly capacity.” “We work together with the irrigation team to decide on which paddocks can be grazed, remembering that the primary purpose of farms is to provide a platform for the wastewater. “We calve 415 and peak milk 400 cows and aim to keep all the beef cross and heifers, so it is a minimal

bobby farm. This season we will have less bobbies as we have put belted galloways over our heifers to extract more value out of the system. You may receive $35 a bobby, but as a beef weaner, you may receive $400 a calf. These do well because belted galloway is perfect for lifestyle blocks. “Being a part of the awards made me analyse data and fine-tune what I was doing as you have to justify why you do what you do. “I looked at cropping on-farm and its value. We have a certain amount of unirrigated hectares that I grew 25ha of maize and 11ha of turnips. I assessed the benefits of growing crops off-farm or importing feed. “However, as our main objectives are to minimise feed imports to keep nutrients brought onto farm low, it was better to continue to use crops to soak up some of the nutrients applied to land and lead by example by keeping our nitrogen loss to water at minimal levels. “It is always good to know how your numbers are stacked up and identify areas you can improve on and justify why you do what you are doing. “The future of the dairy industry for Lisa and I is exciting. We intend on staying here to develop myself and appreciate the opportunities within the company. “Having started life in Zimbabwe and ending up in New Zealand farming has certainly been an adventure.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

The deafening silence

by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

As a constituent MP, I talk to dozens of people every day. They are a cosmopolitan bunch. They can be farmers, industrialists, other MPs (from both sides of the House), children, and mostly, constituents who need to talk about their issues, their concerns, their suggestions. One group I can’t talk to, apparently, is the NZ Transport Agency nor, apparently, are they allowed to talk to you. Why is this concerning? I’ll tell you why — it smacks of petty politics. Did you know that the new Matakohe bridges were now open to traffic? That’s a great job by the transport agency, and they should be loudly proclaiming their achievement with at the very least an opening ceremony. However, they didn’t. All they did is move

the road cones to one side and let the traffic through. Why? Maybe because it was a National Party project instigated, funded and construction begun during the term of the previous Nationalled government. Was the transport agency told to keep it low-key because of that? Petty politics. Not for the first time. The NZTA has been targeted before by the government. You’ll remember the self-styled saviour of the regions (but in fact deliverer of nothing) Shane Jones in a gross breach of the cabinet manual interfered over the Semenoff safety issues. Those issues were complex and in my view best left to the experts not the bluff and bluster of this parliament’s preeminent grandstander. Coming back to the NZ Transport Agency, there is an issue there of National MPs being shut out of meetings with them.

My colleague, Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon has raised the matter, but other National MPs including myself have experienced it too. Transport Minister Phil Twyford has accused Andrew of “playing politics” by raising the issues, but then says: “No-one wants NZTA officials tied up in meetings.” Excuse me? Meeting a local MP to discuss local issues is part of every government agency’s job. That’s what the MP is there for — that’s what the agencies are there for. Just not, apparently, under this government.

Avocado autumn action plan How much better can I be? Ahead in the avocado calendar are flower induction, flower initiation and bud development. Starch accumulation is also occurring, preparing the tree for the upcoming demands of flowering and fruit set. The main orchard priorities for the next quarter are: Soil and leaf sampling Soil and leaf sampling is taken so that fertiliser programmes can be tailored to ensure optimum nutrient levels and tree health. Nutrient deficiencies and poor reserves will translate into decline tree health poor fruit set. Preparing for spring plantings Make sure that you have taken soil samples, completed your soil corrections and prepared your land for planting well before your planting date draws near. Phytophthora root rot (PRR) control Crop load, nutrient deficiencies, environmental stresses and the demand on reserves for flower development can cause a tree to be more susceptible to diseases and could be the trigger for decline during the wet, winter months when roots battle against the high pressure of Phytophthora. Control should not only be chemical but also cultural, which will result in healthier roots more resistant to PRR and a soil environment where PRR is suppressed. Cultural methods include the application of organic matter and soil supplements to stimulate microbial populations and activity.

Pruning Autumn signals the start of pruning. Besides controlling tree height and improving light penetration into the canopy; pruning also ensures a more consistent return crop by balancing the productive and vegetative canopy. Open canopies also ensure better spray penetration and coverage and less favourable conditions for fungal pathogens. Fungal Rot Management Control is most effective by using an integrated approach of cultural, chemical/biological and nutritional management tools. The disease triangle Disease results from interactions between a pathogen, a susceptible host and suitable environmental conditions. Changes to any three components accelerate or suppress fungal diseases. The most effective control method of fungal disease is prevention and disease management; therefore, relies on cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Pruning, orchard sanitation, ensuring optimum tree health, following proper harvest procedures as well as copper sprays are all part of managing the disease cycle.

(Part two) Despondency is a common obstacle to healing. The nagging thought that you will not be able to improve can affect our ability to make decisions. After speaking to so many people, you get the feeling that some people are just stuck in their problem. However, my client files are full of stories from people who had the courage to try something different. Last year I helped someone really troubled by joint pain in her hands, feet and hips. That had restricted her to the point that simple things like gardening were a challenge. To make it worst she had a lot of pain at night affecting the quality of sleep. She had been taking a traditional high glucosamine joint product with little result. She had been doing lots of good things such as a diet high in omega-3. While I made further dietary suggestions, most of the benefit came from adding a high chondroitin supplement. A therapeutic level of high-grade chondroitin is the single most important measure to improve comfort with arthritic joints. In

Europe medical doctors regularly prescribe chondroitin. We started at 1,600mg of highgrade chondroitin, which also had 1600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of high-grade curcumin (from turmeric). After only a few months she had much less pain both in the daytime and at night and was able to enjoy gardening and other things that had become difficult. I see healing as a three-step process. The first is to gather relevant information and an honest appraisal of the situation. We then create an action plan based on healthy eating, appropriate supplements and lifestyle changes. The third is re-evaluation to make sure that the client is getting the best possible results. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. What should I look for in a tyre? You should look for a tyre which best suits your driving requirements. Tyres are manufactured for almost every requirement; wet or dry traction, high mileage, high speed control, steering response, ride comfort etc. A tyre professional will be able to advise you of product features.

There are so many brands and models to choose from. How do I know which one is best for me? Discussing your needs with a tyre professional will help establish a tyre product that best suits your requirements and your budget. A professional tyre person will ask questions regarding your expectations of the product, the type of driving you do, how long you expect to keep your vehicle etc. A salesperson who just asks you what size you want is not ensuring you receive the most suitable tyre value.

How can I tell when it is time to replace my old tyres? Most automobile tyres have a built-in tread wear indicator in the tread area of the tyre. This wear indicator will show when there are 3mm remaining on the tread. Depending on your driving habits or conditions you should replace the tyre no later than when the wear indicator is visible. Consult a tyre professional when tyres show signs of wear.

The wear on my tyres look strange. What causes this? Wear problems could have a variety of causes. The problem could be caused by over or under inflation of the tyre, mechanical problems or the need for an alignment (caster, camber or toe).

The Vet Centre www.thevetcentrenorthland.co.nz

We Care. Animals. People. Community How do you know if you have liver fluke on your farm?

An easy way is to check your works kill sheets for the code LLF or SCL. LLF indicates live liver fluke found and SCL indicated sclerosis or scarring of the liver, which could be caused by immature fluke migrating through the organ.

When is the best time to drench for fluke?

Autumn dry off is typically the best time to target mature and immature stages of liver fluke as large numbers of fluke are usually picked up in late summer and there is a withhold period which eliminates treating during lactation as an option.

What product should I use?

If you are serious about controlling fluke, using a product containing Triclabendazole is imperative. Not all products are equal so talk to The Vet Centre Team about what option is best for your stock. “Drainage and orchard work is my speciality and working with the rural community is important to me. It is great seeing land utilised to its full potential whether it be a farm, house site, an orchard or lifestyle block,” says Karl. “Northland soil can get very dry or very wet, which creates issues for animals or plants and orchard areas. Improving the ground conditions with the correct drainage makes a healthier environment for stock and orchards. “We have specialised machinery to work within the confines of kiwifruit, avocado and other orchards helping with aeration and shelter root cutting because they require optimum soil conditions to achieve maximum yield. Some of our oldest written language comes from a clay slab dug up from the Iraqi Desert, dated to the Sumerian people of 5,000 years ago before Egypt was much more than a collection of huts next to the Nile. It’s a complaint about a bill for fixing a leaky roof. From the days of the old draught horse, when the great guilds of tradespeople were established (the most famous of which went on to become the modern charitable society, the Freemasons) through to colonial times, when farmers called in traction engines to shuttle plough their fields and process hay into bales, it’s been the same story. Help! We have a job to do, time is not on our side, and we don’t have the specialist tools and expertise to go it alone. What all of these people have needed, from the horse rider looking for a mobile farrier through to the medieval king sending out for engineers to make

his castle impregnable to Vikings, is a mobile workshop. These days there’s not much call for massive fortifications, as Vikings are fairly thin on the ground. When the movie industry needs a model castle, or, more prosaically, when the average farmer needs tractor repairs, a new water heater or an electrical fix, they

turn to the tradesman’s best friend, the white van. Note that the colour can change according to signwriting and branding, but the definition is as generic as ‘sticky tape’. There is a particular type of vehicle, which is purpose-built for western tradespeople to use as a combination office, tea break room, workshop and toolbox.

W H O A R E YO U G O I N G T O C A L L ? It all begins with the Ford Transit, the original tradesperson’s van from the 1950s. You’ll see them carrying BBC camera equipment in the background of shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The truth is, the original comes not from Britain, but Cologne in Germany. It was not until 1965 that the bulldognosed Transit we all know came into production, and it was initially a hit with crooks and cops rather than builders and plumbers. Robbers from the ‘old firm’ days when the Kray brothers ruled the London underworld loved how much loot you could pack in the nondescript but lively Transit; the law loved how many constables you could ferry to a fracas in the back. One of these 1960s Transits holds the record for longest service. It’s still on the road today after going all the way round the clock, a distance comparable to a moon mission, and it belongs to a plumbing firm in (appropriately) Bath, England. Here in New Zealand, the Transit Van and its opposite number from the Holden and General Motors stable, the venerable Bedford J series, have been transformed into everything from farming flat decks to ambulances. You can still see Bedford ambulance camper vans at holiday hot spots each summer, next to another mobile workshop on wheels, the ice cream truck. The Japanese and Korean marques have made their mark in recent decades, with the Hiace, L300 and their ilk muscling into a territory where Ford still produces a dominant product. Nowadays, the farmer or business owner in need of fast response can summon a mobile welder,

tyre service, diesel mechanic, or builder with their mobile phone. The man in the van is less likely to get lost along the way thanks to GPS. There have been some big advances in miniaturising the gear, which slides into the back of these high-mileage, hard-working vans, meaning that more tools can be powered from a simple inverter and battery array. Where would we be without the tradesperson’s van? In a world where you can summon up a mobile taxidermist, podiatrist, tattoo artist, dentist or sushi

chef, we take it for granted, perhaps, that more prosaic trades such as electricians and painters are out there on four wheels. So next time you see a proud van-driving tradie tucking into a mince and cheese pie by the side of the road on his tea break, reflect with pride on the innovation and hard work that’s put him there.

Specialising in Retro-Fit Double Glazing and Magnetic Insect Screens for your Windows & Doors Servicing your area for 30 years

by MagicSeal

MagicSeal is a highly innovative New Zealand-based company with design-led and market-driven products that have helped revolutionise the magnetic insect screen and retrofit secondary double glazing market worldwide. Our sole intention is to make any living/working space ‘a better place to live’. MagicSeal’s thermal insulation reduces the loss of heat by up to 54% because of the trapped insulating layer of still air between the glass, and the MagicSeal retrofitted double glazing panel. Your home will be a lot more energy efficient once this is installed. Double glazing virtually pays for itself as you start to save on power bills the moment it’s installed contributing power savings of up to 20%. For acoustic benefits, MagicSeal’s secondary double glazing is retrofitted to maximise the air space between the pane of glass and acrylic double glazing. It acts as an insulation baffle, due to different types of material

Save Lives BE FIRE SAFE THIS WINTER

(retrofitting acrylic over glass) both panes vibrate and pass different frequencies at varying time intervals thereby damping down the noise waves. In other words, both panes do not vibrate in sympathy as a double glass unit would. Therefore, these retrofitted double glazing windows totally outperform a standard double glazing unit (DGU). Double glazing will reduce the amount of condensation on your windows, preventing mould growth and protecting the health of your family, creating a warmer, drier home. With the addition of state of the art UV stabilisers, MagicSeal’s acrylic is like sunblock for the windows and can block up to 80% of all UV radiation due to the UV inhibitors in the optical grade acrylic, whereas standard glazing glass will only block 30% of the sun’s UV radiation. Our retrofit double glazed unit works just as effectively in a cooling climate as it does in a heating climate. It can prevent the heat from coming in on a scorching hot summer day making your home more comfortable and reducing air conditioning costs.

Alternatively, in winter it traps and stops warm air from escaping on cold evenings, reducing heat loss by up to 54%, due to the trapped air between the retrofitted panel and glazing. Talk to us about replacing your single pane windows. Request a free quote by phoning 0800 10 44 66.

Help beat bowel cancer Bowel Cancer New Zealand has launched the Move your Butt campaign for bowel cancer awareness month this June. “No one likes to talk about bowel cancer, yet it kills as many New Zealanders as breast and prostate cancer combined. During June alone, 100 Kiwis will die, and a further 250 will be diagnosed. It is a national emergency, and it is important that New Zealanders are aware of the signs and symptoms and most importantly, how to prevent it,” says Bowel Cancer New Zealand general manager, Rebekah Heal. “This new campaign encourages all New Zealanders to get off their butts and challenge themselves to move more, as exercising more and eating well are proven to help beat bowel cancer.” Bowel Cancer New Zealand is asking all New Zealanders young or old, fit or unfit to move their butts more during the month of June. “The challenge does not need to be extreme like running a marathon. It simply means challenging yourself to exercise more than you usually do. We are aiming to get all Kiwis off the couch and moving more — even if it is just a 10-minute walk a day. “Everyone who takes part will be helping themselves prevent bowel cancer, and by getting their friends and family to sponsor them, they will be raising valuable funds to beat this silent killer.”

Move your Butt month is being supported by a range of ambassadors including One News sports commentator Jenny-May Clarkson and Claire Turnbull, a nutritionist from Mission Nutrition and Healthy Food Guide. Jenny-May lost her brother to bowel cancer at age 56, so she knows first hand how important it is to seek help early. She is taking on the Move your Butt challenge to raise awareness of bowel cancer and its symptoms. “I believe he knew something wasn’t right. While he had all the classic symptoms, I am not certain he was aware that it was cancer,” said Jenny-May. “Cancer is such as hideous thing, no matter what kind of cancer it is but because my brother died of bowel cancer, I am acutely aware of it.” Symptoms of bowel cancer can include bleeding from the bottom or seeing blood in the toilet after a bowel motion, change of bowel motions over several weeks without returning to normal, persistent or periodic severe pain the abdomen, a lump or mass in the abdomen, tiredness and loss of weight for no particular reason and anaemia. So get moving sign up at moveyourbutt.org.nz to help more New Zealanders beat bowel cancer.

Reminder for duck hunters Federated Farmers reminds duck hunters heading out for the season that access to farms is a privilege.

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Duck shooting season is a big deal in rural New Zealand, with 40,000 annual participants across the country. Hunters will pay their money to Fish and Game for a duck shooting licence, but access is usually reliant on the goodwill of local farmers. Many hunters find themselves beside a wetland built and maintained on private farmland with many of these arrangements several generations old, established on a handshake. “Access on to farms comes with responsibilities for both hunter and farmer. Farms are businesses, homes

and places of recreation, and we ask that people recognise this when they head out for a shot,’’ says Federated Farmers environment spokesperson Chris Allen. Health and safety around firearms, water and vehicles remain the number one consideration, but there are other things for hunters to think about as well. “Biosecurity is essential on farms, and with serious new threats such as Mycoplasma bovis, hunters need to ask landowners about any special requirements, particularly when driving between different properties. For sheep farmers, sheep measles is a big concern, and all dogs must be dosed for

worms at least 48 hours before going on to farmland. “The basics of rural etiquette such as leaving gates as you find them, controlling dogs and not disturbing stock remain the same,” says Chris. “Remember that fewer and fewer people come from a farming background, and what was once rural common sense may no longer be known by all farm visitors. This is a time for farmers to showcase and share their properties with visitors from town and a chance for hunters to show their appreciation to their farmer hosts. We want everyone to have a good time and come home safe to their loved ones.”

The Technical Advisory Group will be reconvened ahead of its planned midyear review to review the programme, particularly in light of the current surge, and reassure us that the programme remains on track towards eradication. “We have appointed Kelvan Smith as an independent chair of the governance group to improve oversight and decision making, and will be reviewing whether any further changes to the governance are required. “Senior epidemiological staff are central to effective eradication and must be positioned to provide independent advice and input into the programme. Changes will be made to strengthen their input and their connections with MPI’s chief science adviser and the dairy and beef industry’s technical experts. “Eradicating M bovis is a complex, challenging and confronting undertaking. Disease control programme The M bovis Programme is increasing activity in the lead-up to moving day and winter grazing to limit the risk of disease spread, and to give farmers as much certainty as possible heading into this busy period. The programme will see a surge in the number of properties contacted about the movement of risk animals, and a higher number of properties than usual will be placed under movement restrictions. The Ministry for Primary Industries will be contacting about 300 farmers who have had high-risk animals move onto their property. The programme would expect 250 of those to have Notice of Direction movement controls placed on them immediately and, following testing, that 10 to 12 per cent may become confirmed properties. Around two-thirds of the properties are beef farms, and the remainder dairy. Eight hundred other properties will also be contacted about very low-risk animal movements, as the programme continues to work to ring-fence the spread of M bovis. That is a very different category of farm. These properties have had low-

risk events, like being one of many farms to have sent an animal to a property that has become infected, but the programme does need to check. It is expected less than 0.4 per cent of these properties will become confirmed properties. MPI has stated that the surge does not represent an increased spread of the disease, and does not change their confidence that we will achieve eradication. Beef + Lamb NZ say most people know there is a greater risk of the disease spreading as a result of increased animal movements during the coming weeks. “This is a time of the year when graziers take on stock, both dairy cows and young stock from dairy farmers. It is also a time when beef farmers are in the market for replacement cattle for their finishing operations. Therefore the aim is to get through the inspection and testing process for as many farms as possible so that

farmers can have certainty about their farming options.” Beef + Lamb New Zealand is assisting MPI and DairyNZ to increase the staff and resources available to the M bovis Programme in an effort to minimise disease spread at this time. “We know this surge will be disruptive for farmers caught up in the response and frustrating for those seeking to make timely stock decisions. B+LNZ will be working with our response partners to give farmers the most up-to-date and practical information to help them manage their risks but at the same time run a business. For those farmers with restrictions, we will be working hard to support them. “We are also reminding all farmers of the importance of maintaining complete and accurate records in NAIT, as this is an essential tool for the speedy tracing of animals and ultimately for protecting everybody’s farms and the wider industry.”

Wintering practices are critical Soil health damage during winter has been recognised as a significant issue for the farming community and coincides with high stock densities and high soil moisture conditions. “Stock wintering systems are thought to play a major role in water quality and soil health because stock graze at a time of year when there is much hydrological activity that moves contaminants off the land and into nearby water bodies,” says sustainable agriculture adviser Bala Tikkisetty. “It is general practice during winter to graze stock intensively on winter forage crops supplying large quantities of feed in a relatively small area. Now is the right time to consider the impact of stock wintering practices on soil health and water quality.” These practices can impact surface and groundwater quality, as well as soil quality due to heavy concentrations of dung and urine, the creation of bare ground and the risk of run-off in wet weather. “Studies have shown that water quality guidelines and standards have been exceeded as a result of intensive agricultural activities. Some stock wintering options that can achieve good environmental results are animal-friendly and make economic sense. “Feed and stand-off pads protect soil physical structure over wet periods. The feed pad is a dedicated concrete platform where supplementary feeds are

brought to the stock. It has higher feed efficiency as the wastage is reduced to about five per cent compared with 20 per cent or more when silage is fed in paddocks. “Stand-off pads are a dedicated loafing area for stock. These are constructed using a softer, free-draining surface utilising materials like wood chips. As stock can be withheld from pasture for longer periods of time, the area required per cow has to be bigger — about eight metres square. Capture of effluent is an important aspect of stand-off pads and requires the base to be sealed underneath, either with compact clay or artificial liner or concrete, and the captured effluent directed to a treatment system. “Herd shelters are a combination of a feeding platform, stand-off facility and animal shelter. As the cows stand on the reinforced slatted floors, their effluent drops through and into a concrete-lined bunker below and with composting barns the cows roam freely in the barn and lie on a mix of wood chips and straw. The beds must be kept dry by providing adequate ventilation and aeration. “In the past, sacrifice paddocks have been used when other options were not available to stand animals off or

feed supplements when it is very wet. However, there is a risk of soil structure damage and animal health problems, such as lameness and mastitis. If soil potassium levels become too great (potassium is excreted in urine) it may predispose the calving cow to metabolic problems. These paddocks come with a very high risk of discharges of contaminants to water, so must be sited well away from waterways, with an area of rank growth to trap any sediment or dung that washes off. “Build your wintering structure well away from waterways and allow for solid and liquid waste disposal into your effluent disposal system. Don’t use supplementary feeds in areas where run-off may reach any waterbody. By planning now and implementing proper stock wintering management practices, you can play an important part in improving water quality and soil health.”

Concentrated potency by Andy Bryenton

In an era when everybody wants to make the next cute, hip, urban-styled micro SUV, one car maker has decided to do things a little differently. Well, it’s the way they’ve been doing it since 1970, when they called their product the LJ (light jeep) 10. You’d know its lineage by another name, especially if you judge an off-roader by its ability rather than its size. It’s the Suzuki Jimny, and it’s been building a reputation and a niche which few other automakers are willing to challenge, let alone contest for dominance in. Variant names such as Escudo, Samurai and Sierra have come and gone, but still, there are few examples out there of similar machines. The Jimny still boasts a ladder chassis like a big, beefy Range Rover. It even has true four-wheel drive with locking hubs, like a Land Cruiser, and it still has the footprint of a single tennis shoe. It also looks so cute and fierce that it is elevated to the same level as a new Fiat 500 or Mini. This, the pug dog with wheels. More seriously, the Suzuki resembles like a tiny version of Mercedes-Benz’s G-Wagon. It’s so little that in Japan they fit the Jimny with a 646cc inline 3 and register it as a ‘kei car’; small enough to be allowed on Tokyo streets without a special permit. Here, they’ve put a ‘massive’ 1,400cc four-banger under the hood, mated it up to an old fashioned, snappy little five-speed manual transmission, and turned the whole thing loose with proper four-

Not a Hummvee far away — the Suzuki Jimny is competent and cool

wheel drive. The challenge, here, is not whether the Jimny is cooler than almost any other micro SUV you can name. It’s whether you can have more fun, with more presence, in the real outdoors, for this little money — sub-$26k money. For an extra $500 you can mix and match paint for a two-tone retro look. Suzuki is on a roll right now, with the Ignis crossover already gaining

popularity for its off-beat and funky aesthetics. Now comes a shrunk-inthe-wash military Jeep, which if it lives up to its ancestors, will actually do the business off-road where other micro SUVs fear to tread. It might be the coolest car on sale right now, and you can justify it for the lifestyle block too.

There have been a few facelifts along the way, as one might expect from a superstar, but each one has made this age-defying icon more powerful and better looking. We’re talking, of course, not about an actor from the golden age of cinema, but about a car. The Ford Mustang turns 55 this April, and that’s a birthday well worth celebrating. Through six generations and a roll-call of racing wins at events like the gruelling Daytona 24 Hours, the Mustang has been a ‘halo’ vehicle for generations. It’s regularly cited as one of the most desirable, yet obtainable, classics. Now the latest evolution of the muscle car with the stallion on the grille has been voted the

The Mustang cemented Ford’s place as muscle car innovators and took the world by storm

world’s favourite for four years running. Just last week a massive, multi-million dollar Mustang Owner’s Museum was opened in Concorde, North Carolina to celebrate the many classic variants of this American legend. Meanwhile, the Mustang returns to the track down under, with a modified racing version of the powerful V8 contesting the Aussie supercars series for 2019. For the collector, the enthusiast and the passionate driver, the current model of Ford Mustang is

available as a convertible or coupe, with the option of an inline four turbocharged EcoBoost motor or a thumping V8 for that classic ‘soundtrack’. Both benefit from next-generation handling and suspension, which puts them ahead of other modern muscle cars when the road gets twisty. From its debut at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, through to the triumphant celebration of 55 years in the limelight, there’s a reason the Mustang has stood the test of time. Drive one and find out.
