Sara Brill at last year’s free pest plant workshop in Coopers Beach

This winter will be the seventh year the Northland Regional Council has held the popular three-hour workshops, which its pest plant specialist Sara Brill will host from July 24–29. Council’s Coastal North constituency representative councillor Joce Yeoman says the council typically holds two pest plant workshops a day at each venue. “Demand can vary from year-to-year and up to 200 people take advantage of the offer to learn how to better manage both land and freshwater-based weeds; either on their own land, or properties they manage for others. “If you’ve ever wondered which weed is which, why weeds wander and what we can do about it, come along to one of our informative, fun and free workshops.” Sara Brill says the events are a fantastic way to get ‘up close and personal’ with some of Northland’s worst weeds, and attendees are often surprised by the fact “not all plants are created equal, and some weeds definitely have a lot to answer for in terms of their impacts on our environment. “The workshops are hands-on, but delivered in a relaxed and fun way to help people learn how best to tackle a wide variety of more than 20 pest plants including wild ginger, lantana and moth plant, as well as highlighting the need

to report freshwater weeds like salvinia and water hyacinth.” Each will include a short presentation, hands-on identification tips and information on control options, including chemicals and other methods. The workshops will be in Paparoa at the Memorial Hall on Monday July 24; in Kerikeri at the St John Ambulance Hall, 357 Kerikeri Road, on Wednesday July 26; in Coopers Beach on Thursday July 27 at the St John Ambulance Hall, 7 St John Road; and at the regional council chambers Whangarei head office, Water Street, on Thursday July 27. Two separate three-hour workshops will be held at each weekday venue; one from 9am till noon and the other from 1–4pm.There will be a final weekend workshop in Whangarei on the morning of Saturday July 29, from 9am until noon. Councillor Yeoman says the winter workshops are a great chance for people to plan well ahead and get ready for the busy ‘weed knockdown period’ once the warm spring growth phase starts. General information on pests — both plant and animal — is available at nrc. govt.nz/pestcontrolhub. Registration is essential as numbers are limited to 30 people each session. Email sarab@nrc.govt.nz or phone 09 470 1162 to register.

Duck shooting safety

3

Duck shooters are urged to pay attention to all seven rules of the Arms Code. Especially rules one and five: ‘treat every firearm as loaded’ and ‘check your firing zone’. “Failure to observe these two rules is the major cause of incidents during the duck shooting season,” said Joe Green, Firearms Safety Council of Aotearoa New Zealand chairman. “Safety with shotguns is a priority for all duck shooters this season.” Most years there are injury incidents involving shotguns. These range from minor to more serious injuries and tragically sometimes death. “When moving from place to place with the shotgun — ‘unload it’ and always ensure the muzzle is pointing in a safe direction. “Of course it should go without saying that rule seven is observed — ‘avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms’. If you are going to drink this opening weekend save it for afterwards when the guns are safely secured,” said Joe. “Each year during duck shooting season there are reports of shooters within the firing zone of another shooter being peppered with shot. Before firing, a shooter must establish their firing zone and confirm that no other person, property or gun dog is within their firing zone.

“When you follow flying game birds your firing zone can change rapidly. As you swing the muzzle around in an arc you must be alert to others getting caught in your firing zone. A stake in the ground either side of your shooting position can help control overswing outside of your firing zone.” Before leaving your shooting area, check and double check that your shotgun is completely unloaded, including ammunition from the magazine. “Be aware that ammunition can become jammed in tubular magazines — so double check these. “Before cleaning or securing the shotgun in your safe at home, do another check and confirm that the gun it is completely unloaded. This practice should also apply in duck shooting camps. “Never let your safety standards slip and have a successful and safe duck shooting season.” The seven rules of firearms safety: 1. Treat every firearm as loaded 2. Always point firearms in a safe direction 3. Load a firearm only when ready to fire

4. Identify your target beyond all doubt 5. Check your firing zone 6. S t o r e firearms and ammunition safely 7. Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Pay attention!

Duck hunters are also urged to wear lifejackets when hunting on waterways this season, with water levels in some parts of the North Island still much higher than normal as a result of the recent storms which deluged the country.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

APPRECIATING THE COUNTRY LIFE by Ann Morgan

Brett and Denise Larmer both grew up with urban backgrounds and Brett’s desire to be a farmer has seen them progress to own their own dairy farm in Whakapara.

“W

e grew up in town in the Waikato and Brett had an uncle who owned a farm. From a young age Brett always wanted to become a farmer himself,” said Denise. Brett was employed on a farm when he was 21 years old and Denise worked as a legal secretary. “We didn’t stay in this position for long and advanced quickly through the industry. We ended up large share milking in Kerikeri with 1,100 cows on a System 5 for eight years, and managed to save and buy this farm four years ago. “We had hunted for a property but every bid we made failed. We found this one in 2014 and I think it was the

only farm left on the market. It was very neglected, and after we bought it we wondered what we had done. “The first year we poured a lot of money into development. All waterways, native bush and wetlands were fenced, water lines and pumps were replaced along with regrassing and repairing the houses.” The farm is 212 hectares with 136 effective. Being possibly the second highest farm in Northland at around 2,000 feet on a plateau has its challenges. The farm has 76 hectares of native and regenerating bush, and one of Northland’s top wetland areas. “It consists of old volcanic soil and had

What is a dental Implant? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost.

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

not had any significant fertiliser input for many years so it is one of our main focusses to get the pH levels to where we could actually grow grass. We are about three degrees cooler and a bit exposed in the winter because of the altitude. Our cows do well because it is cooler, especially in the summer and autumn. “We also have a very high rainfall to contend with. The Russell State forest surrounds us. “We are on target to achieve 130,000kg milk solids this year, approximately 400kg MS a cow. Our three-year average is 110,000kg MS.” Brett and Denise have a 2.5 stocking rate milking 320–330 cows in the peak, milked through a 36-a-side herringbone shed. The herd consists of mainly two, three and four-year-olds and some of the rejects from the sale of the original large herd in Kerikeri. Focus has been on breeding to high BW bulls through LIC and Ambreed. Green feed maize is grown on farm for a summer crop and to help with the re-grassing programme. Palm kernel and soya bean hull have been fed through an in-shed feeding system. “Next year we are aiming at milking 350 cows with a target of 136,000kg MS. We operate a System 3 and find our management is easy on staff, ourselves and the cows. “We buy in feed when needed to fill the gaps in the season when there is insufficient grass growth.” The couple won the LIC Dairy Farm Award at the Northland Ballance Farm Environment Awards this year and Denise says entering was definitely a challenge. “Friends influenced us and we had nothing to lose and everything to gain as the judges give good feedback.

Brett and Denise’s farm at Whakapara is possibly the second highest farm in Northland at around 2,000 feet

“There is a big diversity of people from avocado growers to dairy and beef farmers to vineyards. It would be great to see more entrants. It pushed us out of our comfort zone and you get to see what others are doing. “We got here by staying focussed on our goal of farm ownership. We overlook the Hikurangi swamp, the whole east coast, Oakura, the Bay of Islands and beyond. “It is a beautiful place to live. We have created a sanctuary for birds, now having several pairs of wood pigeons, tuis, ducks and other birds, which were scarce when we arrived.” Denise says the farm is definitely a work in progress. “Had we stayed in the Waikato we probably wouldn’t have been able to afford to buy a farm. “We plan on spending more time out of the cowshed in the coming years and

more time developing the property. Our children are both living abroad and we would like to spend more time travelling and fishing. In the long term, we wish

to create an opportunity for a contract milker to take over the day-to-day operations and perhaps buying a runoff or building a feed pad.”

The family also grow maize for grain and silage. “We have two experienced and valuable employees, Matt Snedden and Robert Travers, and next season Matt will transition to contract milking. This gives him an opportunity to move forward in his career and Robert will continue working alongside him.” The Narbey’s also took home the region’s Waterforce Integrated Management Award and LIC Dairy Farm

Award with the judges commenting that the couple’s family farming operation was intensive but still felt ‘simple and logical’. “We have a 44-bale rotary cowshed that is setup to allow one person to milk through most of the season. This includes automatic cup removal, ProTrack drafting, in-shed feeding and an EZheat camera,” says Scott. “Our water tanks and pumps are monitored using the Water Smart system at the main house. This allows the pumps to be turned on and off to minimise water and power use.” The judges said the farm made excellent use of water and systems for efficient milk cooling and water heating, and the farm’s placement and design of

infrastructure gives it a feel of no clutter and easy flow. Drains, ponds and a boundary with the Kaipara River are all fenced to exclude stock. Marginal areas have been retired into wetlands during the past four years and planting of these is completed. Pest control is also being undertaken. “Much of the soil on the farm is clay and we are mindful of pugging. We built a feed pad and a calving pad to mitigate this. The calving pad is working really well for us. It was put in two years ago at one end of the feed pad.” The effluent system gravity feeds to the ponds and all the effluent is contained easily. The property includes a neighbouring 45ha leased block and a 90ha run-off at South Head, Kaipara, where Murray and Marie live. Scott manages a nearby 80ha maize and beef block for Sue’s family trust, and the couple also have a Helensville physiotherapy business which Sue, a physiotherapist, has operated for 10 years. The judges said they were impressed with the family dynamics and the way Scott and Sue run their business. The history of the farm and importance of this to the future shows through in everything they do. Decisions made are mindful to keep the farm together and a place for the family. Scott has worked on the farm since he was 18 years old and says they enjoy working alongside their staff and with the animals. “We are heavily involved with community, including the Helensville rugby club, and Sue volunteers on two local health boards and as a

physiotherapist to Helensville Rugby and Kaipara College. “Working with young people is important to us. We encourage them to think of dairy farming as a career that provides great opportunities and is rewarding. “There is a lot of good stuff happening in the dairy industry. Our farm is intensive and we feed a lot of extra supplements. Some people perceive that to be not so good but we have the feed and calving pads and see that as a real benefit to the environment as our cows aren’t damaging the pasture or soil in the winter. “We store all the effluent off the pad in ponds and it is spread over the paddocks in the summer when it is dry. It fertilises the paddocks and helps improve the pasture.”

Scott and Sue’s children, sevenyear-old Bella and five-year-old Ollie, are the fifth generation to live on the original smaller block, cleared from bush to milk cows by Scott’s great grandfather Thomas. “Sue rears most of the calves and Bella and Ollie love to help. They really enjoy the farm life. “Entering the awards was a great learning curve for us and our staff. It wasn’t until we reflected on everything that we had done in recent years that we saw the progress and huge improvements we had made. The feedback has been really helpful for all of us and it is great to be able to reward and encourage Matt and Robert in their work too.”

We want you to have a positive and profitable experience so that you will plant a new crop and ensure your children reap the benefits in another 30 years. Forme Consulting Group is a long established forestry consulting business and we continually hear stories of disaffected forest owners who feel they haven’t received full value for their forest crop at harvest and don’t bother to establish a new crop. GOING BANANAS FOR CATTLE BY ANN MORGAN

Members of Tropical Fruit Growers of New Zealand (TFGNZ) are producing banana crops in a sustainable way to supply New Zealanders with locally grown fruit and also provide cattle with a highly nutritious fodder.

C

hair of the group, Hugh Rose, and his wife Pauline live in Rukuwai, and the group was formed for like-minded people to share knowledge of tropical fruit growing. The couple grow a variety of crops including bananas, pineapple, kumara, watermelon, butternut and lotus plants. “I was going to the markets with my watermelon and butternut and met another gardener, Owen Schafli, and we got talking about his garden.” Owen originates from South Africa and no one had told him he couldn’t grow pineapple, peanuts, bananas and pawpaw in Northland.

“He grows everything and was happy to share his knowledge with others and explained the advantages of bananas and how to grow them properly.” Hugh purchased 100 banana stems from Owen after their discussion as he believed he had the right property for them to thrive on. “The stems were planted the oldfashioned way, which is three metres square between plants,” says Hugh. “Then I started doing numbers in my head. At that planting level you can achieve more than 1,000 stems per hectare. Those plants will produce not less than 10kg a year for each stem.

Going on today’s market prices, at say $2/kg, that equals $22,000 a hectare minimum. Owen gets bunches that average 25kg, it is a no brainer. “Pauline and I still farm an eclectic mix of cattle including beef, Red Devon and beef weaners, but now we really are going ‘bananas’ in our old age. “Bananas are a gross feeder. They can take anything you throw at them, including lawn clippings, and they are 100 per cent edible, particularly if you are a cow. “It makes sense to grow the plants on our farms. If you plant them around the effluent pond and fenced waterways these areas are productive and you will get fantastic cattle fodder and a cash crop.” Hugh says farmers have been importing palm kernel as a food source for their stock, yet the same countries we buy the kernel from, feed their stock bananas. “We have thousands of hectares of land suitable for growing around Northland, there is a huge future here.” There are more than 14 different varieties available and the group are planting out trial blocks to see which varieties are most successful on the different soil types. “We are in discussions with Northland Inc and NorthTec about cloning with tissue cultures, identifying good cultivars and mass planting. Hopefully iwi will use the idea to their advantage as well,” says Hugh. The population of NZ is 4,781,000. At 18kg per person, that makes 86,000 tonnes. At $2/kg that's $172

million, 3,085,200kg in Northland alone. Bananas are a multimilliondollar industry for the country — even conservative figures indicate 25–30kg bunches can often be harvested from each stem. Hugh says so long as you are relatively frost free people are growing bananas from Taupo north, including Thames, Tauranga and Katikati. “We believe these crops have huge implications for Northland, and we are looking for farmers interested in planting them. The best land is sheltered and sunny so North facing creek banks, fenced off from stock are a great use of riparian areas or around the effluent ponds. “We use a ‘no tillage’ method of planting and prefer weeds sprayed out before planting. Part of growing a successful crop is to eliminate competition, however the stems are easy to spray around with non-systemic or organic weed-killer.” The TFGNZ will seek to meet farmers’ requirements with stems from existing plantations and once the fruit is in production TFGNZ will coordinate regular supply to the retail outlets. “Bananas will grow on hillsides and amongst scrub as Owen demonstrates. The farmer is expected to pay for stems, however the price will be heavily discounted, and we recommend a variety of types to find what grows best for the individual property. “Initial costs are roughly $10,000 a hectare, which will return $22,000 a year based on $2 a kilo and this is a conservative figure. are minimal and can be part of the day’s routine, trimming excess foliage when required. “The area grown will automatically replenish itself and provide sufficient material to more than double the size of the plantation annually.

“Bananas are a highly nutritious stock food — everything can and will be eaten by stock so nothing goes to waste.” For more information contact Hugh at hugh@prose.co.nz, phone 027 439 1572 or 09 972 7727 or visit facebook. com/TFGNZ.

Stone age fertilisers by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

The earliest global date for the beginning of the Stone Age is a mere 2.5 million years ago, in Africa. However, the building of topsoil on the planet began from the moment planet Earth was put in motion. The raw materials for topsoil are rocks, in particular basalt rock, which in its molten form captures a full complement of minerals. Our planet is approximately 4.5 billion years old. The tools necessary for building topsoil, are glacial movement of ice flows. As the ice flows it grinds the mountainous rock down to a fine powder; when the ice recedes, it leaves behind, metres deep, of precious mineralised topsoil. Added to this is the interaction of live volcanoes and all the fine rock powder they spew out across the land. Our planet’s topsoil is basically derived from rock dust.

How alive and magic is our ‘living planet’; having the ability to crush multimineral rock dust to build topsoil, to maintain life. All life is dependent upon topsoil and water — these are the two most precious commodities on our planet. Agrissentials are the pioneers of multi-mineral rock dust blended with fish, seaweed and microorganisms. These fertilisers have the ability to regenerate topsoil by increasing LT-F300FK4

the microorganisms and the worm population within the soil, breaking down all waste and manure, back into topsoil. Both our RokSolid full spectrum fertiliser and our Oceans100 fish and seaweed liquid fertiliser contain more than 63 minerals, all in a natural form and converted by the microorganisms to a plant available form. In this state, the converted minerals taken up by the plant are all recognised at the cellular level, building strong healthy plants, which transfers on to strong healthy animals and people. It’s the ultimate system. Stone Age fertilisers have been pumping away in the soil for millions of years. The introduction of synthetic soluble chemical fertilisers in the last 40 years has witnessed the erosion of our beautiful topsoil, at a rate of 200 to 300 million tonnes a year in NZ alone — that’s unsustainable (Dr Morgan Williams report to the NZ Government 2004). Agrissentials, Stone Age fertilisers, made from ground up rock and blended with fish, seaweed, microorganisms and other plant material, are the ultimate fertilisers for all producing units. All of Agrissentials products evolve out of the environment and as such, are part of the environment and part of nature, non-toxic and completely safe. Prevent spread of aquatic nasty

Duck hunters and others are being urged to take special care to prevent the spread of the invasive aquatic weed gypsywort from the Te Paki area, amid fears it could threaten other high value waterbodies and wetlands in the Far North. The threat from gypsywort (Lycopus europaeus) is so serious the Department of Conservation has closed public access to Te Paki’s Te Werahi Lagoon; the only place the weed is currently thought to be in Northland. Nor thland Regional Council representative Mike Finlayson, says that while DOC manages the lagoon, access to it is across Te Paki Farm Park, and the park’s owners, Ngati Kuri, support the closure. “Gypsywort is a mint-like plant, up to a metre tall, with square stems, toothed paired leaves and tiny white or pale mauve flowers produced in groups above each pair of leaves in the upper stem. “Originally from Europe and Asia, it has underground runners, which enable it to spread, but despite its mint-like appearance, does not have a minty smell when crushed. “The weed — which flowers late summer and produces considerable amounts of seed — is abundant in the Waikato and Rotorua lakes, with a few records of it in Auckland and near Haast on the South Island’s west coast.”

At this stage, its only known Northland home is Te Werahi Lagoon, where experts believe it was probably accidentally introduced from the Waikato by duck shooters. “It’s a vigorous, shade-tolerant plant and like many weeds, it’s very resilient and well adapted to spread and do well in our Northland climate,” said Mr Finlayson. The plant forms dense patches on the edges of lakes, streams and wetlands smothering and displacing native plants. It has the potential to dominate the margins of still waterbodies and invade vegetation like raupo, reeds, sedges and rushes and has been flagged as an ‘eradication plant’ under the council’s Proposed Regional Pest Management Plan. Ninety per cent of gypsywort seed can remain floating after six months on still water and even longer — more than 8.5 months — on flowing water. Seed can be spread by water, footwear or contaminated machinery and is known to be dispersed by ducks after it passes through their digestive system.

“A combination of waterfowl and human influence could see gypsywort spread through most wetlands, which highlights the need to follow the ‘check, clean, dry’ message,” said Mr Finlayson. “Make sure all equipment used between waterways is thoroughly cleaned and dried for at least 48 hours before using it in the next waterbody or wetland.” Report any sightings of gypsywort to the council on 0800 002 004.

Quad bike safety clarification

ADVERTORIAL

Should I take Coenzyme Q10?

WorkSafe New Zealand has clarified the circumstances in which it is acceptable to carry passengers on single-seat quad bikes, in consultation with Federated Farmers, Beef + Lamb NZ and DairyNZ. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), persons conducting a business or undertaking such as farming must identify and manage risks arising from work, so far as is reasonably practicable. “This is a good example of WorkSafe and farmers working together to find practical solutions. We all want less accidents and injuries on our farms, so the important thing is that we always consider risk, and this guidance emphasises that,” said Sam McIvor, CEO Beef + Lamb New Zealand. WorkSafe’s position on quad bikes is that single-seat quad bikes should not normally be used to carry passengers. Carrying a passenger on a quad bike that is not designed for more than one person can increase the risk of accidents by making it more unstable, more difficult to control and more likely to rollover. “WorkSafe’s guidance is that you should use the safest vehicle for the job. When carrying a passenger this would mean using a vehicle specifically designed for more than one person,” said Al McCone, WorkSafe Sector Lead — Agriculture. WorkSafe acknowledges that farmers and others using quad bikes for work need the policy clarified so they clearly understand what is acceptable to WorkSafe in terms of carrying

passengers. It is only acceptable when there is no reasonable alternative having considered factors such as availability of alternative vehicles, terrain, and rider and passenger capability. In those cases where a passenger is taken, appropriate mitigation measures must be taken — including limiting speed, briefing the passenger on best practice riding and avoiding unsuitable terrain. If carrying a passenger on a quad bike is a recurring necessary practice, you should be seriously looking at acquiring an alternative vehicle suitable for the circumstances as soon as is practicable. The clarification also stipulates that carrying a child as a passenger on a quad bike creates a particular set of risks that you need to consider. As with the general principle, you may only carry a child as a passenger if there is no reasonable alternative and following an assessment of the related risk and risk mitigation measures. “It’s great to have this clarification on an issue that has been confusing for farmers. It also encourages farmers to think about the risk their activities create and to manage their work in line with that risk,” said Katie Milne, Federated Farmers board spokesperson for health and safety.

Part 2 Most people make all the Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) they need. Some however should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzyme that makes cholesterol. This is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can restrict CoQ10 by as much as 50%. This can reduce the amount of energy made especially in organs and muscles and is why I recommend people on cholesterol medication take 100–200mg of rapid absorption CoQsol® each day. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a week on CoQ10 the pain had completely gone. I generally find it takes 1–2 months to restore muscle function and energy. What makes CoQ10 so special is its ability to carry electrons. This enables CoQ10 to move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make energy molecules called ATP. This ATP is how your body works. Inadequate CoQ10 levels reduce energy output and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness.

This ability to carry electrons also makes CoQ10 an excellent antioxidant. It can donate to free radicals their missing electrons preventing them from stealing electrons leading to cell and tissue damage. In particular it protects circulating LDL cholesterol from being damaged by free radicals. This is the first step in the process of forming plaques that block arteries. There is some good research suggesting increasing CoQ10 can be helpful for people with neurodegenerative problems such as Parkinson’s. I will generally add additional CoQ10 either as the patented CoQsol® or my specialised MTQ10. Most people feel a real difference within 1–2 months. Give me a call if you need more information. Innovation and change at Mystery Creek by Paul Campbell

Prosperity in New Zealand’s primary sector is the focus of the 2017 New Zealand NZ National Fieldays from June 14 to 17 at the Mystery Creek Events Centre, near Hamilton, with the overall theme designated as ‘leading change’. “To excel and grow in the future, innovation and change is vital,” says Fieldays Society CEO Peter Nation. “It is an exciting and challenging time for

the industry, but with good leadership we have great opportunities.” Mr Nation said the event led the way as a place where businesses and individuals come for the latest in agricultural innovations and technology. Leading change supports the Fieldays pillars of education, internationalisation and innovation, which are represented at the event with the Innovations Centre, the Careers and Education Hub and the Business International Centre. Last year the event generated $430 million in sales revenue for New Zealand firms. There were 1,507 exhibitor sites and 130,684 people through the gates during the four-day event. Signature events will be back this year, with inventions, entertainment, competitions and trade exhibits. Eight finalists will tackle a series of challenges relating to farm life, from fencing and log splitting, to dog handling and physical fitness. The winner will walk away with a prize pool of more than $20,000 and the pride of winning the coveted Golden Gumboot.

There have been 28 sculptural artworks selected as finalists for the 2017 Fieldays No 8 Wire National Art Award that prove the imagination and creativity of Kiwi artists and DIYers. The overall winner will receive $7,000, second and third place-getters will receive $1,000 and $500 respectively. Inventions are the stuff of Mystery Creek. “Supporting innovation is vital to the future of agriculture in New Zealand,” said Fieldays Innovations event manager Gail Hendricks. Awards are given across multiple categories and winners will receive thousands of dollars in business support and advice to help get their innovations to market. “The Innovations Centre is probably the busiest space at Fieldays and always attracts a lot of attention,” said

Hendricks. “Every year, there is always broad media interest and the television breakfast shows broadcast from the Innovations Centre during Fieldays. The place is just buzzing.” During Fieldays the Innovations Lab, which is located inside the Innovations Centre, will be set up as a dedicated space for award entrants to meet with experts such as lawyers, patent and trademark attorneys, product development consultants and other business experts. “The awards offer a great opportunity for start-up companies. If you are a backyard inventor with a quirky invention for the agricultural community or if you are an established business who wants to put your new idea out there, this is a great way to do it.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES May 2017

W H O A R E YO U G O I N G T O C A L L ? trail of accredited repairs means peace of mind. On the farm, where broken machinery costs in time and profits, knowing who to call to replace that tyre or fix that broken implement is even more vital. With calving season on the way having a reliable quad bike or UTV in the shed and a reliable livestock vet on call is of paramount importance. Downtime at any other time of the year, such as during silage cutting or maize planting is costly and annoying, but it can be a matter of life and death on a cold winter’s morning during calving. Talk to the machinery and vehicle pros now to ensure first-time starts when the pressure is on. The other aspect of weathering the knocks of day-to-day life is insurance — because major disasters around the home are quickly made to disappear by a good insurance company. With so many variables, it’s important to tailor a policy that fits your lifestyle. Remember — many things are fully covered by insurance, which you may not expect. An example — if an unsightly stain mars your carpet and can’t be shifted by commercial cleaners, your insurance may very well cover replacing the carpet for that entire room. The trick here is to have seasoned experts match the colour, pattern and orientation as best as possible — and to ask for advice before deploying home cleaning alternatives. Similarly, those cracked windscreens, chips and dents can be made to disappear by an alliance between a trusted insurer and your local panelbeaters, painters and auto glass experts. Upping the ante, what happens if there’s a disastrous accident

with vital farming equipment? Talk to an insurance broker about the best value for full coverage before disaster strikes, and you’ll be sure that help is at the end of the phone no matter what. Living in rural New Zealand comes with a huge amount of bonuses — wonderful scenery, clean air, the outdoors life and strong communities. But the trade off can be isolation from the services and trades that city dwellers take for granted. Whether you’re new in an area or a long-term resident, keeping up with the right people to call for minor emergencies is a must. Thankfully, we have plenty of mobile professionals who are ready to jump into the ute, load up the digger or pack tools into the van to

see things right. These pages provide a handy directory of such professionals in the North, ready to swing into action when help’s needed. With forward planning and a knowledge of who to call, even the most unexpected problems can be chopped down to size. After all, without the stress it’s hardly a disaster at all!

I told you to get some covers from Palmer Canvas

Multi-award-winning company, Palmer Canvas, was established in Whangarei in 1963 and specialises in a vast range of products including awnings, covers, one-off designs and massproduction items to clients specifications, using quality industrial fabrics and colour choices. “We employ the best qualified tradesmen in the industry and some of our staff have been with us for more than 30 years, since their apprenticeship days,” says manager Cheryl Irvine. “We scooped multiple awards last year including one for a project we completed at Tara Iti Golf Course in Mangawhai. We are not limited to tractors and tarps. “Our motto is no job is too small and no job is too big. We make all the day-to-day items to help make things work for our clients including fertiliser covers. We will even put the buckle on your busted backpack.” Palmer Canvas use canvas PVC, and specialised canvas such as Ferrari. “A wide range of covers are available including cowshed, calf and cow covers, marine interior and exterior covers and upholstery using marine-grade fabric and foam, motorhome covers, seats and squabs, headlinings for catamarans and yachts, and trade vehicle repairs including sliders on trucks, and we can fit out horse floats.” The company also does specialist projects like covering netball courts and lane ways.

We believe in providing old-school customer service and quality. “We have done lots of project work including the cover down at the Whangarei riverside marina, to protect the boats in the winter when they are pulled out of the water. “Culvert fluming to get water away from areas on farm is big at the moment and so are screens for calving for protection from the weather. “For homes we do clear screens, retractable awnings, shade sails and

the like. Our staff provide free measure and quotes, in the Whangarei rural area these are processed within 24 hours. Out of town may take a bit longer.” The turnaround on a project is approximately 5–20 working days, depending on what is required. Northland from the air

An opportunity to fly high is available at the Dargaville Aero Club, which offers a cost-effective way to get into the pilot’s seat for a grandstand view of town and countryside from coast to coast.

www.pumpland.co.nz

The Dargaville Aero Club offers flight training, to anyone, any age. They have a Fly Synthesis Texan Club plane, a Fly Synthesis Storch and an Eagle MT 03 Gyrocopter. Their flying lessons are free, but payment for the hiring of the aircraft is required. Veteran pilot and Dargaville Aero Club chief flight instructor, Murray Foster, says that he gets students from all over. Eleven-year-old Henry Hope-Cross has been flying since he was nine, and wants to be a pilot. He and his dad travel from Wellington to train at the Dargaville club as 1.9 hours of training in Wellington was costing $760, with things like instructor and runway fees as well as aircraft hire. But for the same training in Dargaville, it’s $228, as it only charges for the aircraft hire. The club offers a trial flight — $60 for 30 mins — for those wanting a taster. After that lessons can be arranged. This could also be a potential unique gift idea as well! During a trial flight Murray normally takes people out to Baylys Beach and back, which offers views of the Dargaville township and out to the open ocean. He likes to ‘take it easy’ and fly to make the trainee feel comfortable. New and experienced flyers are also welcome to join in with club events and make new friends, as the social side of the club is well and truly alive. For example, they come together every Saturday to enjoy a shared cooked meal, with people flying and driving in.

Murray says that only around 90% of members actually own a plane, and the rest share the club planes. “It’s very friendly and everyone’s welcome. We have good facilities and new aeroplanes, which are very modern and up to date.” Flying lessons are available seven days a week with gyrocopter lessons every Wednesday and Saturday. What we haven’t got we can get!

I had an interesting discussion with the head of Waikato Regional Council, Vaughan Payne, and asked why they would not look at soil carbon as a focus on cleaning our waterways. “If you don’t restore the soil carbon levels you will never be able to clean the waterways up and maintain them (legislation doesn’t work it’s just another name for creative taxation). Soil carbon (humus as some call it) has declined some 40,000– 50,000kg/ha during the last 40 odd years. So on a 100ha dairy farm that’s a massive 4–5 million kilograms. Consider

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

the fact that in nature nitrogen and carbon hang out together at a ratio of 10 carbon to 1 nitrogen, we can now see how much natural soil nitrogen has gone down the gurgler — the figures are quite staggering. For the conventional farmer applying super and urea, why not try adding 5–10% carbon to your fert mix — it won’t break the bank and we won’t mock you about being a greenie. What you may find is you end up halving your urea bill. Research has shown urea is actually an excellent foliar fertiliser and very little is wasted compared to the 40–50% that is lost — most of which is through ammonia volatilisation due to conditions being too dry or nitrate nitrogen leaching from excessive rainfall. The other problem with solid urea applications is the negative effect it has on the rhizobium living on the roots of clovers (pink little ball on clover roots). For the organic farmer or biological farmer, it your responsibility to keep focussing on what you are doing. You also need to be showing the additional values that do appear —

lower milk urea nitrogen (MUN) milk — this makes cheese production easier and more efficient. One example of a trial we were involved with 10 years ago showed that cows on a biological management system had 30–50% more immunoglobulin in their colostrum (do u know what colostrum is worth in capsules?) at calving and the one-day-old heifer calves had a 20–40% higher mineral analysis in their blood. The empty rate was 3–5% consistently every year. Then the dairy companies have their massive role — Fonterra especially. There are some amazing examples of small dairy companies showing the true value of ‘value added’. Then we can showcase ourselves to the rest of the world as the true caretakers of the great white cloud — we actually may eventually think it’s cool to be called greenies. Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Brainwashed Ministry for the Environment and statistics NZ recently released a damning report showing increasing nitrogen and phosphorus in a percentage of NZ rivers. Surprise surprise! The clean rivers plan, which is sweeping the country, is to drastically reduce nitrogen applications on farm, based on historical data. For farmers hell-bent on trying to mitigate too many changes in management in future will be looking at management now to alter that data. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduct that one such tool would be to drastically increase nitrogen use now therefore boosting historical data, which will be used to determine their future allocation. This whole scandal has arisen because farmers have been brainwashed into thinking that urea grows grass and that profitability will drop correspondingly as that nitrogen is reduced. This new environmental report is calling for a drastic reduction in cow numbers, which would be akin to the idea of drastically reducing cars to cut the road toll! Some common sense is needed here, and I would hate to see people with this line of thinking being able to determine the direction of our farming future. It sickens me to see that the culprits of this whole problem of excess nitrates and phosphorus in our rivers have never been called to account. I am not talking about farmers here, although they are the ones copping the flak. I am talking about the major NPK fertiliser companies who sell 90% of the phosphorus and nitrogen in NZ and have been for the past 20-plus years. NZ farmers have been brainwashed

into thinking that all this phosphate and nitrogen is needed to be profitable. Have these environmental alarmists ever stopped to think that these major fertiliser companies have become billion dollar industries from propaganda to push the sales of the very products these guys make. They have assumed the responsibility to educate students attending NZ educational institutions into the NPK propaganda machine who then go out and advise farmers to push it on. The sooner the proponents of environmental improvement refocus on the cause, the faster these challenges will be achieved. There are great changes beginning where farmers are utilising real science rather than following the NPK accepted principles that grow grass but don’t strictly follow scientific principles. There is accurate data and case studies demonstrating amazing results including better animal health, higher production and higher profit with as little as 80kg N/ha applied, which is the

27

sort of targets we should be seeking. General farmer usage would be around 200 to 250kg N/ha. Education is the best way forward rather than the threat of enforcement of more rules and reduction of our great farming future. This education has got to start with the consultants who are talking to farmers and giving them the advice. Consultants are the very people who can affect farmers change because they are who farmers trust and seek advice from. Currently, this radical change to drastically reduce nitrogen and phosphate use unnecessarily is coming from farmers who are entrepreneurs and can think outside the square. These very farmers have gone out of their way to reeducate themselves and have found a better path. The biggest challenge to this change is coming from their trusty consultants who put doubt into this new path. If farmers and consultants feel challenged to act, please contact me.

SHORTHORNS PADDOCK SALES 2017

Summer droughts followed by the recent heavy rainfall will result in higher than normal nitrate levels in the soil, putting stock at increased risk of nitrate poisoning according to Ravensdown experts, Jeremy Klingender, Agronomist and Seed Product Manager, and Dr Julie Wagner, vet and Ravensdown Animal Health Product Manager. “Any farmer will be thrilled to see their crop or pasture shooting up after the recent rain, but the downside is that it’s likely it will be very high in nitrate levels. This can be fatal for your stock if not managed and monitored properly,” said Jeremy. He says there are four key things to watch out for when identifying a paddock that should be tested — fast growing crops, younger pastures (under 21 days’ rotation), overcast days and high soil temperatures. “High soil temperatures speed up the conversion of ammonia to nitrate in the soil making more available for the plant and the cow. Overcast days stop the photosynthesis process and put higher nitrate levels in the pasture, especially in the mornings and evenings, that’s why early afternoon grazing is better.” Certain plant species are more at risk of high nitrate levels such as ryegrasses, brassica crops, maize and oats. Dr Wagner says it is important to remember the hay and silages from these crops are not exempt from the toxicity issues.

IDESIA SIMMENTALS

Dr Julie Wagner, vet and Ravensdown Animal Health Product Manager

“Farmers need to be herbage and feed testing before grazing, and if they have concerns they should take their stock off immediately. We can do urgent nitrate tests, which are turned around in a day, but the essential thing to do is transition your stock slowly onto paddocks or feeds that

are high in nitrates. “Starting your cattle off with an hour grazing after a feed of hay or silage early to mid-afternoon means they’ll be less likely to gorge. Don’t put stock that are hungry on ‘at risk’ crops or pastures and monitor your stock closely, removing them at the first sign of trouble.”

Custom satisfaction by Andy Bryenton

Ford’s record of success with the Ranger ute rolls on into 2017, with the big blue oval brand preparing themselves for another blockbuster visit to Mystery Creek in the mid-year. But there’s something else afoot before the Field Days fun, and it’s caused a literal blackout. Ford has always been big sponsors and fans of the All Blacks, and ahead of the forthcoming British Lions tour it has released a special edition of both the Ranger and the Everest sports utility, all tricked out in a new, deeper shade of midnight black and all garnished with extra add-ons such as nudge bars, interior detailing, roll bars and massive mag wheels. The overall impression of the FX4 Ranger is of a machine as solidly planted as the All Black’s defensive line and as aggressive as their forwards. That’s entirely the idea, of course — and it feeds into an emerging trend for the new generation of ute owners to want something different. When muscle cars were all the rage in the 1970s, nobody wanted a stock model off the yard. Everyone wanted the limited edition, tuned, pinstriped, candy-flake paint job hot-rod version. It’s becoming a similar world in the top end of the emerging Kiwi super-ute culture, one which mirrors the truck modding exploits of America’s F150 and Dodge Ram owners. Not content with being one of the pack, many Ranger drivers now demand custom special editions to really stand out

need to be seen are embracing special editions like the FX4 with both hands. It’s not just this big black tribute to the ABs which is so coveted. Before Ford’s designers added the custom blackout to their top selling ute there have been others taking the initiative. Customised ‘stealth’ edition Ranger utes appeared on the North Shore, boosting the image above and beyond that of the factoryspecced Wildtrak. Then a series of West Coast Edition Rangers were created in Dargaville, in the West Kaipara, with a variety of combinations of LED lamps, bars, mags, tyres, detailing and interior

finishes. So far, no two have been the same, and they have been sold as far away as the West Coast — of the South Island! With other brands such as Nissan releasing special edition utes too — witness the tough-as-nails Barbarian custom Navara — New Zealand has a new status symbol. The custom ute — and by extension, the custom Ford Ranger — is the new king of the highway.

Pedigree. It’s an all important factor in the world of automobiles — the difference between a new up and coming supercar like the Koenigsegg and an old and established marque like Lamborghini. Both are blisteringly fast, but one is the stuff of petrolhead dreams just because of the name. The thing is, that name has to be earned, and backed up with solid performances, building one on the other every time a new machine hits the tarmac. So it is with the Honda Civic Type R — a strange case in point indeed. With its roots firmly planted in the stolid dependability of the Civic, that extra letter has meant poise and power for 30 years. Here comes the anniversary, then, and a new model for 2017, which aims a withering broadside at not just the other Japanese automakers, but at the best of Europe as well. Honda picked a great way to assert its dominance as it launched the sleek, sharp new Civic Type R. Those slippery lines, festooned with gills, splitters, spoilers and blades cut through the chilly air at the Nurburgring in Germany on the morning of April 2, preparing to smash some records. When the dust settled the new Honda had blitzed the 20-kilometre ‘green hell’ in just 7 minutes 43.8 seconds. That’s the fastest time ever posted by a front wheel drive car, breaking the record set by VW’s Golf Clubsport. It’s a whole seven seconds faster than the old Type R, which in motor racing terms is

Pay attention!

Black magic — aerodynamics makes the Civic Type R slippery, while power comes from a new breed of VTEC engine

a geological age. It’s a testament to the sheer attention to detail which has been lavished on this predatory-looking road missile. Even the stand out triple exhaust system is cleverly designed with a smaller central pipe to create a precisely tuned sound at both low and high revs. Handling has been tuned to razor precision, and the power from the two-litre, double-overhead-cam turbo i-VTEC engine hits the ground through

a six-speed manual box. This, then, is a driver’s car pure and simple. And the best news of all — it’s coming to New Zealand. While we don’t have the twists and turns of Germany’s most famous racetrack, we certainly have the wide range of surfaces, corners and straights represented there. No word yet on price, but fans of the big red R will be fixated on that other number — 7:43.8 — more than any other.

But how to waterproof the fuse box on a tractor, switches in the milking shed and standard lamp fittings in the workshop? What if the electronics or electrics had water through them already? Contacts gone green and corroded, switches not moving, ignition dead? CorrosionX Safe to 39,000 volts and nonflammable. It immediately penetrates through oxidation to bond with the clean metal underneath. Displaces any existing corrosion and surface debris — right down to the molecular level — to provide unprecedented cleaning for an immaculate connection. Electronic connection perfection With just one molecular layer bonded to each contact surface, CorrosionX has only 0.1 ohm resistance. Electronic connection protection CorrosionX protection can stay in place for months in harsh, outdoor saltwater spray environments or for years on indoor gear. This is why TopEnergy and Northpower are using CorrosionX to protect their installations. Preventative application of CorrosionX can save you thousands of dollars. But

hindsight is cheap. Accidents, floods and downpours just happen. If your gear was sprayed with CorrosionX before the incident, you have pretty much built a waterproof ‘box’ around it. If your electronics and electrics were left untreated and the water got to it, then there is still a very good chance it will come back to life. CorrosionX

ADVERTORIAL

New face for leading Isuzu truck dealership by Andy Bryenton

They’re the lifeblood of many businesses — delivering the goods, hauling orders to market and performing vital construction and infrastructure tasks. In fact, we’d be stuck without the fleet of trucks which plies the nation’s roads each day. There are several big names in the heavy transport industry, but surprisingly for an area which harbours a thriving selection of agricultural and manufacturing businesses, only three of those brands have a dedicated sales representative living in the Northland area, and only one is the frontrunner in the area of truck sales with model ranges from 5.5 tonnes and up — a name which anyone who drives on Kiwi highways will recognise — Isuzu. Sales figures in an early 2017 edition of Truck and Driver magazine show that more than 1,200 new Isuzu trucks hit the road during 2016, continuing a 17-year stretch in the number one spot for trucks sold a year. Of this number, more than 700 were sold by Rodney and Northland’s only authorised Isuzu trucks dealer — CAL Isuzu. This fastgrowing company now welcomes its new sales representative Shane Ward to the region. Or at least, it welcomes him back — Shane is a local who was born in Te Kopuru and raised in the Kaipara, before moving to and living

in Whangarei. More than that — his name may well be familiar to those who follow the sport of rugby. A former representative for his region, Shane retired from the field at age 30, but retained a keen competitive edge, which has served him well in business. Now residing back in the regional centre of Whangarei, he is able to deliver swift service to the wider area from Puhoi to Cape Reinga. In fact it’s that desire for challenge and the chance to build something extraordinary which saw him join the CAL Isuzu team. The Waikatoheadquartered company has gone from strength to strength since its inception, and already has experienced Isuzu service agents here in the NorthlandRodney region, in the form of Commercial Diesel Ltd, Whangarei and Warkworth Diesel Services, Warkworth. The opportunity to represent the forwardthinking CAL Isuzu team in an industry where his father Graham excels (and in the province he still calls home) was too good to pass by. Adding to the attraction

Shane Ward is CAL Isuzu’s new Rodney and Northland Sales Representative — living in and working for the region

of this brand new role was the range and quality of Isuzu’s offering. Covering everything from compact commercial trucks able to be driven on a class one car licence — and perfect for the rural trade or small business — through to true heavy transport workhorses, the Japanese marque has no less than 122 options ready to roll. Shane is already on the road talking to businesses across the Northland and Rodney areas about stepping up to the Isuzu difference.

YOUR BUSINESS DESERVES THE BEST. CAL>ISUZU IS THE LARGEST ISUZU TRUCK DEALERSHIP IN NEW ZEALAND. At CAL>Isuzu we consider that selling a truck is just the start of the customer experience. With the backup of CAL Isuzu and the resources of one of the world’s largest vehicle manufacturers, there’s a whole lot he has to offer. His three decades of heavy transport experience and contacts in the truck industry represent a wealth of expertise. Because he’s from Northland, and works exclusively for his Northland and Rodney customers, you can also count on superior, fast and personal advice and aftersales service for your fleet.
