Glen Coulston retired erosion-prone hill country now regenerating to native bush at Mimiwhangata

Chair of the Water and Land Working Party, Justin Blaikie, says the council has the fund to fence erosion-prone land for the next two years with $304,500 in 2021/22 and $303,000 in 2022/23, as well as funding for native planting. Councillor Blaikie represents the council’s Hokianga-Kaikohe constituency. He says eroded sediment is Northland’s single biggest natural pollutant, with the Bay of Islands alone losing an average of 500,000 tonnes annually for the past century. “It makes good environmental and economic sense to remove erosion-prone hill country from being actively farmed to reduce potentially unnecessary erosion and either leave it to revegetate naturally or plant it out.” The council requires retired land to be fenced with a three-wire electric fence as a minimum, and for those keen to

actively plant retired areas also has grants available to help with planting. “Grants include native retirement planting or native and exotic production with species suited to continuous cover harvesting, and council will help prepare a planting plan with landowners as part of this service.” One of those who have already taken advantage of the scheme is Glen Coulston of Mimiwhangata, who this year received $10,000, subsequently retiring approximately 12 hectares. He encourages those looking to retire erosion-prone land to take the opportunity council and MPI are providing to landowners. “It’s about protecting our soils from running off the hillsides into the harbours and protecting our water quality and kaimoana that suffer from the sedimentation,” he says.

The Northland Regional Council is largely through the third annual construction season of the wider $15 million Awanui flood control project that is now expected to be completed in 2022/2023. Last construction season, about $1.1 million work was done but a subsequent multimillion-dollar injection from the central government as part of its Covid-19 recovery response package is allowing the upgrade to be done more quickly and at a less direct cost to ratepayers. Colin ‘Toss’ Kitchen, the Te Hiku council representative, says as well as dramatically shortening the time needed to carry out the upgrade, the government funding through the Provincial Development Unit would also lessen much of the associated burden on the NRC’s ratepayers. The 2020/21 construction schedule involves about $3,050,000 of works, including extensive earthworks for southern spillways currently underway over approximately 2.4 hectares of former farmland behind Rongopai Place. Those works include the construction of 280 metres of new stopbanking to better protect 29 flood-prone homes in Rongopai Place and approximately 900 metres of new spillway. Councillor Kitchen says the $1.1 million of southern spillways works will account for more than a third of this season’s works and are now 90% complete, although the spillways will not

be used for the next year or two to allow grass to become well-established. The council also has $4 million of works scheduled to begin late this year for the new 2021–2022 construction season and another $5 million, which should mark the completion of the upgrade, for the year after that. Councillor Kitchen says the upgrade programme is designed to help futureproof the decades-old scheme, including predicted climate change impacts and deliver a considerably higher level of

protection for Kaitaia and surrounding areas. “The upgrade collectively is designed to protect urban Kaitaia in a ‘once in a century’ type flood and a 1:20 year event in surrounding rural areas.” He says already Northland’s most common natural hazard, flooding will likely get more intense as climate change continues, increasing risks to communities in flood-prone areas and to critical infrastructure like roading.

Tori Banta has had a love of horses since she was young with her passion leading her to take up the wild Kaimanawa horse challenge.

“G

rowing up we always had a horse. When I was 14 years old I got a tricky little pony. The training method I was using wasn’t working for him and a friend mentioned Parelli Natural Horsemanship,” says Tori. “That led me to study at the Parelli ranch in Florida when I was 17. In 2011 I came home as a Parelli instructor and I eventually established Tori Lee Equestrian. “I teach horsemanship, training and start young horses. “When I was at the Parelli ranch I met Canadian rider Lauren Barwick and I went to the London Paralympics as her groom. I also attended the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with the Canadian team.”

Tori has started around 50 horses in the last 10 years as well as helping with other horse work. “Over recent years my students challenged me to take on one of the Kaimanawa horses from the annual muster. I had no desire to train a wild horse, but this year the opportunity came up to be a part of the Freedom to Friendship Kaimanawa Challenge. “The Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Association has a group of professional trainers that they endorse. The trainers adopt a horse to care for and I was chosen as a wild card trainer. You have six months to tame and train the horse. “I decided it is time to take up the challenge and try my hand at putting the

Two Kaimanawa wild horses are in Tori’s care, one which she is competing with and another that came as his companion and she is taming

principals that I use with domesticated horses to the wild horses. I received two horses, my one and another came as his mate, which I am taming for a friend. “The basic principles I teach are the concept of horses communicating with each other through facial expressions and body language. They see us as predatory and I am excited to see if what I am teaching is accurate. “Working with a horse that has had no human interaction before is a challenge. As much as I tame and train horses, they are going to teach me more. I can then pass what I learn to other people. It is like a little circle where I am helping the horses but they are helping me and that is very special. “Adopting the Kaimanawa horses is important as people don’t realise what a special breed they are. They have been in the Kaimanawa ranges in the Central North Island for around 150 years and are completely wild. They see army personnel working in the area but have never interacted with people.” Tori says that the Kaimanawa wild horses and the Ahipara wild horses in Northland are some of the only wild horse herds in New Zealand.

“Keeping them wild is a special thing between the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Welfare Society, the New Zealand Defence Force and DOC. They are trying to give them the best possible life but need to keep them healthy. “The horses are one of the best managed wild herds in the world. In my opinion, we are doing a great job of caring for the breed without interfering with them. The annual muster is an important part of the process although it upsets people. “The reality is the two horses that I have from the recent muster are the healthiest horses I have seen. That comes down to the fact that they have enough feed and roam the land. Having the space to wander is important for them. If you overcrowd that area they can’t find enough food and become unhealthy. “Before the herd was managed they came out in poorer condition with issues such as excessive lice. That is nowhere near as bad now. “Keeping the herd numbers down by people adopting them means the ones left behind don’t have to struggle for resources and thrive.

Tori Banta is taming and training a stallion as part of the Freedom to Friendship Kaimanawa Challenge

“This year there were 506 horses counted and they needed to get the figure down to around 300 for the optimum number. “They try to find homes for around 100 horses, but due to Covid the muster didn’t happen last year, so this year 200 homes needed finding. “KHH and DOC decided to only muster those they had homes for, so only 125 were removed and none were culled. “Although they are taken out of their natural habitat, they do thrive in domestication if that initial process is done kindly. You need to take it slowly to let them adjust, and understand they

have never been behind fences or close to humans. Staying in the Kaimanawas is not a reality considering the space that is there. “It is a special thing to be a part of helping them to adjust to what we see as normal but is foreign to them. Kaimanawa horses are a super special breed and to lose them because of mismanagement would be such a shame.” Read more about Tori’s experience with the Kaimanawa horses next month.

Memories are made of this by Ann van Engelen

Born in California, USA, Rachel Jordan travelled the world with her camera before moving to Kerikeri with her husband Eric, bringing her passion for photography with her.

“N

ot many people get to have a career that is their first love. I am very blessed to have done it for 22 years now,” says Rachel. “My grandad was a hobby photographer and I took it up as a teenager capturing moments with friends, family, and going to events in LA. I constantly took photos documenting life with friends posing for me so I could learn. “I was in college for a little bit and then went backpacking alone for five years, travelling the world taking photos of people. I always knew I wouldn’t live

in America my whole life and met lots of Kiwis along the way. I thought I would be a travel photographer for National Geographic, but on my last trip, a year’s worth of work got stolen. “I returned home and met Eric. We married on the beach in Hawaii and we used a two little starfish logo on everything including the cake. He even bought the domain name to keep our wedding plan details on. “I loved our wedding so much that I ended up photographing a few friend’s weddings for fun. I loved that it was in between editorial fashion and Rachel Jordan has captured images of people from many countries through her backpacking travels before settling in New Zealand with her husband Eric and son Evan

Wedding photography has given Rachel many opportunities including various farm scenes and discovering a baby elephant playing in the water at a beach in Thailand

Rachel and Evan enjoy moments in the garden and appreciate the rural lifestyle that living in Northland has to offer

documentary style after doing portraits in LA. “We had a baby and decided to move to New Zealand and pursue photography as a business. Eric had never been to New Zealand and I had come on a cruise once. We looked at a world map and decided New Zealand would be a great place to live and settled in Kerikeri. ”We decided to have a complete wedding photography business. Eric created our website and got things going and I delivered flyers letting people know I was available to catch their special moments. “I love being out in nature. Every wedding has its own flair and theme. Often weddings on farms have a big marquee overlooking the land and it makes a stunning backdrop. I have travelled to some beautiful locations and shot every kind of wedding you can imagine. “I use a documentary approach and even a sprinkle of rain can make

spectacular photos. I want people to experience their day to their fullest and enjoy the time. I also include animals if they are there. Once I captured a wedding in Thailand at a private beach and we found a baby elephant playing in the water. We were able to interact with it and got some beautiful photos. It was a very beautiful experience. “Ultimately it comes down to capturing the style people want. My best advice is to enjoy the day and don’t stress, that is all that matters. With everything going on worldwide, it is more important than ever to capture those special moments no matter where you are.” Rachel describes herself as a people photographer. “I can’t just take a landscape photo, I will always put a person in it. It is a passion that consumes me and is my outlet for creativity. When I am not doing photography I create works of art with Photoshop. I love being able to bring a story together and capture

Creating memories for people to look back on in life is part of Rachel’s passion, even when it rains

moments in time that bring you back to that place. “I love capturing the raw beauty of people, especially those who don’t realise how beautiful they are. Moments with children are also important as they grow up very quickly. Someone who isn’t a mum yet, may not know how important it is to have photos with their parents or loved ones until many years later, so I think ahead for them. “I think if you are passionate about something and keep trying the work will follow. I never did photography for the money, the money is just a happy thing that came from it. On the farm you can use hay bales, tractors

and sheds as props. You can get really creative. “Last year I attended a wedding where the groom had made a rustic bathroom, tables and chairs for the reception. It was mind-blowing and added a real personal touch with farm elements. “No matter what, I think experiencing life and enjoying each other is the most important thing to do with the people you love. Having the memories captured on film is also important. Portraiture is very soul-fulfilling and I love working with Kiwis. New Zealand is beautiful, we have no regrets about moving here. Ever since we moved here it has felt like home.”

MAY 2021 NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Pushing her boundaries by Ann van Engelen

Belinda Price took up the challenge to participate in the 2021 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year award and was surprised when she came away with the title.

“I

grew up in the Far North and didn’t know how lucky I was. Mum and dad had a few different farming operations, including shearing and fencing,” says Belinda. “At one stage, dad went sharemilking, but it didn’t work out, so they brought a fish and chip shop at Coopers beach. This gave me both farming and retail experience.

“My husband Ben and I have sharemilked north of Whanganui for seven seasons milking up to 680cows. We are presently relocating to Taranaki as we brought a farm in Oeo, and staff have run the property for three seasons. “When I was first nominated for the awards, and I told Ben I couldn’t compete with past winners like Barbara Kruiger. I thought there was no way I was

that good. Then a second nomination came in, and I thought it would be rude to not try. “It was a pretty mind-blowing process, and I was surprised to get into the top three finalists and honoured to win. It made me step back, and I realise I must be using my skill set correctly. “I do a bit of everything, including the milking roster and taking care of the calves, LIC and DNA reporting, office

work and health and safety. We enjoy watching our staff grow and succeed in the industry, whatever that looks like for them. “Ben and I do our best to keep our farm as hazard-free as possible and are health and safety conscious. We make sure people know how to do things, and looking after mental health is important to us. We understand the aspect of living and working in the same

for what is going well and what isn’t. I am a believer that there is a solution for every problem. “I want our staff to come up with solutions as well. Our roster is six days on and two off. It keeps things running and gives our staff a good break. I know some people have not such good rosters, and with me, it doesn’t sit well. We also try to get our staff off the farm for learning experiences. Life includes being available and ensuring you have connections. You need a little toolbox of people who you can go to for advice. Having the right network and relationships and letting staff meet people they can keep connections with for the future is important. Ben has different strengths than me. He is hands-on day-to-day, and I see the big picture more. “I may not be on the farm daily, but I am working in the background. It is the same for the staff.

As Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year, Belinda believes the partners and children of staff members are also an important part of the business

Belinda Price has been involved in farming since she was a young child and appreciates being able to bring her own children up on the land environment and want our staff to come to work. If they don’t want to come to work, there is an issue. “When you are a 50/50 sharemilker, you need to be the best you can and meet the contract and farm owners’ wishes. You must run the business as effectively as possible in that system. “We have done A2/A2 breeding with our animals because our son had eczema quite severely as a young child, and we discovered he could tolerate A2 milk. “It wasn’t the science — it was that A2 worked for him. We are now working on getting our home farm up to our standard, and the staff will go on the journey with us.” Belinda, at times, gives staff ideas to solve problems, and together they decide what to try first. “I am also a rural support trust facilitator, and we always try to do performance reviews. We use a template

“Their partners at home are just as important to us. You need to understand their family dynamic, and if they need a longer lunch break or to go to family appointments, it should be facilitated if possible. “Employees do need to adhere to their work description, but it is also ensuring everyone is on the same page. “Farming is an awesome career as there are so many different facets. You need to keep your feet on the ground and know where you come from. A good team is like family, and knowing how each other tick helps. “We love that we can raise our children in an outside environment. They often help us with the young animals and planting trees. “They are gaining skills that the next generation needs to have to carry on caring for the environment in the future.”

ADVERTORIAL

Helping osteoarthritis: Chondroitin sulphate by John Arts, Abundant Health

Many hats by Chris Penk, MP Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate

As an MP, I have the privilege of fulfilling a number of different duties. Usually, when I write in these pages, I get the chance to focus on local issues and other matters of interest to this area, thinking particularly about my role as the local Member of Parliament.

A significant research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of high-grade CS is the most important natural compound to help joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months, the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance

of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is, how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. This comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. Chris Penk, MP Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate

I also have other hats to wear, however, like many MPs. In addition to my local advocacy work, I’m the opposition spokesperson for defence and the related portfolio of veterans’ affairs. These are subjects close to my heart as someone who had served in the navy as an officer based both here and in Australia, as well as on the proverbial seven seas, of course. Around the time of Anzac Day, it is particularly important to reflect on the contribution of our troops during the years, right up to the present day. I should add that it’s not only the military but also other uniformed services whose members work hard to keep us safe. On that note, please take the opportunity to thank our service personnel when you see them out and about. You might see them on the way to the airforce base, a fire station, coastguard

unit, surf lifesaving club, St John training, police station or similar. You might also see them living life in the community, as fellow ordinary Kiwis, (shopping, playing sport, picking up the children from school, etc), who just happen to do extraordinary things. To finish with a reflection on our armed forces more specifically. At recent local Anzac Day services, I was grateful for the opportunity to highlight some timeless words from the classic poem For the Fallen. Those who we lost in battle will not have the opportunity to ‘grow old’; those of us who remain (‘as we who are left’) must be mindful of our duty to protect the freedoms hard-won by that sacrifice. In doing that, we don’t glorify war but instead honour the legacy of those to whom we owe so much, not only yesterday but also today and tomorrow. Lest we forget.

John Arts comments: “My latest Bettaflex formula with more chondroitin and over double the Curcumin is based on the latest research into joint-support compounds. The normal dose is 2 daily but I recommend a double dose for 1-3 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” John Arts, Founder, Abundant Health Ltd

Action against Phytophthora root rot by Erica Faber Technical Manager, Just Avocados

Ensuring tree health heading into winter is vital for those trees already battling with Phytophthora root rot (PRR). I recommend monitoring your tree health by using the Ciba–Geigy scale and being proactive in managing PRR using a holistic approach of chemical and cultural management tools. Current crop load, nutrient deficiencies, environmental stresses, and the massive demand on reserves for flower development and fruit maturing can cause a tree to be more susceptible to diseases. It could be the trigger for a noticeable decline during winter as the roots battle against the high pressure of Phytophthora in the coming wet months. Control should not only be chemical, which provides transitory protection, but cultural as well, which will create healthier roots more resistant to PRR and, more importantly, a soil environment where PRR is suppressed. Autumn is the time to act. Increasing organic matter with the addition of mulches and composts will support higher numbers of fungi, bacteria and actinomycetes. You can also drench the soil with products that will activate and stimulate these populations of beneficial soil microbes. Soils containing higher percentages of micro-organisms will enhance the biological suppression of the pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi (Pc). As

woody mulch decomposes, it also allows antagonistic soil fungi such as Trichoderma spp to build up. These fungi protect plants by killing pathogens like Pc and also induce resistance against plant pathogens, impart abiotic stress tolerance, improve plant growth and vigour as well as improve nutrient uptake. Should you be using chemical control, remember to time your application. Best results are achieved when applied after the summer flush has hardened off, and autumn root flush is active. Do not do any phosphonate application during dry weather or when the trees are waterstressed. Wait for good soil moisture levels or irrigate well before application to get better uptake, as treatments are always more effective when applied during periods of active sap flow. If any trees earmarked for phosphonate application are going to be pruned, wait three to four weeks after application to commence pruning to allow the chemical to be drawn up by the leaves and translocated down to the roots. If choosing the injecting method, injection sites should be spread evenly around the tree. The chemical does not move laterally around the tree and only moves to the leaves directly above the

Autumn is the time to get Phytophthora root rot under control using both chemical and cultural controls

injection site then down to the roots below them. Foliar spray application can be used instead of injecting if the trees have sufficient canopy to take up the spray application. Consider monitoring your root phosphate concentrations by taking root samples with 25–40ppm considered the threshold of effectiveness, but aim for 40ppm for better persistence. If you need assistance in this area, please contact the team at Just Avocados or Avoworks.

Fulfilling a family legacy As autumn deepens into true winter, it’s a great time to take a look at both Husqvarna’s range of chainsaws and also the safety equipment and best practices that will ensure a hassle-free season of fresh firewood. However, there’s much more than chainsaws on offer at our featured dealership this month; Regent Lawnmowers and Cycles. Their history with small engines and outdoor power equipment goes back to 1965, a time when the technology we take for granted today was in its infancy. Since those days, close to half a century ago, this has been a family-owned business, with a strong focus on customer satisfaction. Serving Whangarei means spanning town and country, lifestyle blocks, farms and city residences at the same time. For that reason, part of the family legacy at Regent Lawnmowers and Cycles has been all about selecting the best from the top global brands in all forms of outdoor power and yard care equipment. Husqvarna provided a good fit, with its reputation for reliability and focus on safety, a big part of the equation when it’s time to get the chainsaw out of the woodshed this time of year. First up, it’s best to give your current saw a once-over to check that it’s ready to go. Your local Husqvarna specialist

JUST HOLLA can assist you with ensuring the chain is sharp and tensioned correctly and the engine of your saw is ready to start, firsttime. Sitting idle for the summer many saws require some attention before autumn chores can be safely undertaken. A hard-to-start, rusty, dull saw isn’t worth trying to use. So to make light work of that woodpile, it’s a good idea to book in a service soon. Of course, sometimes it’s wisest to admit that it’s time for a new chainsaw. Until the 1860s, all such arrangements had to be made in person or via a postal service which was determined but patchy in rural New Zealand. Gangs of shearers, musterers and reapers arrived according to the season in many areas, moving with the weather and offering their services to landowners. One could arrange by post the arrival of a traction engine with its shuttle plough, or machinery from England via ship, brought around for harvesting and baling time. The telegraph made morse code available for the farmer seeking help; by 1870, you could send 15 words anywhere in the country for a shilling. Cable Bay near Nelson got its name when the undersea telegraph linked us to Sydney, Australia, and by 1890 8.5 million morse messages were tapped out across New Zealand. A farmer could ride into town on his horse, dispatch a telegram to the city, and expect professional help or new machinery within the revolutionary time of only a week or two. The morse system served farms in far-flung places right up until 1988. The telephone changed all of this when it was introduced in the 1870s. The government demanded 30 households to take up the new and expensive device before they put in an exchange; the first was in Christchurch, with the first number going to the city’s psychiatric asylum. Some would say this was an ironic start for the phone, which

Remember talking to a real operator or picking up the phone to find that the party line was in the hands of teenage neighbours?

soon spread to rural New Zealand in the form of party lines. These will be fondly remembered by kids of the 1960s and 70s when the concept of several farms using one phone still existed. Still, when the line was free, it was possible to call in a stock agent or tractor mechanic with great haste. Sometimes, these professionals hitched a ride on crop dressing planes or braved the back roads in a fleet of beat-up but unbreakable Ford Populars and Dodge Sixes. Mobile phones have

been with us for 35 years, starting with $6,000 ‘bricks’ weighing two kilograms and evolving into supercomputers a thousand times more powerful than those that guided the Apollo moon rockets, complete with all of human knowledge in your top pocket. Today, satellites are being launched to enable mobile coverage from anywhere on Earth, meaning that the time it takes to summon some professional assistance is limited not by communications but by the speed limit on rural roads.

Tradition on the page by Andy Bryenton

There’s a whole lot of history behind the pages you’re reading right now. Though it seems that most of the businesses in this section are thoroughly modern, the concept of rural professionals reaching out to their customers via newsprint is truly venerable. The first-ever Kiwi newspaper for farmers was actually printed in London, for migrating land-buyers to read on the ship as they sailed to these shores. The idea of the inventive Edward Wakefield, the New Zealand Gazette was all about promoting the colony and agricultural advancements. Soon after setting up on Kiwi soil, the paper was shut down for fulminating against the government on behalf of Wakefield’s New Zealand Company. By June of 1840 the government had fired back, establishing the New Zealand Advertiser and Bay of Islands Gazette in Russell, then the capital of the country. That ‘advertiser’ part of the name was apt, as part of the purpose of the publication was to offer new technology and services to settlers establishing farms. Pages much like these, in oldworld typesetting, would dominate early newspapers in our small towns, selling milk separators, advertising the availability of shearing gangs and farriers, or even promoting steam power for the farm. By the 1870s, a town was not considered thoroughly modern without a printing press. Consider the problems involved with manhandling such a machine — two tonnes of cast iron — on and off wooden sailing ships and voyaging halfway around the world, and you’ll comprehend how important the news and its concomitant advertising was to early New Zealand.

Editors covered local news as it was very hard to gain access to up-to-date stories from other towns. Northland was a four-day trip from Auckland, for example, and the telegraph cost serious coin; only top stories warranted a message in morse code. International news came off ships from England, and it was not unknown for journalists to wait on the wharves with bribes of rum and money to buy copies of the Times from sailors, then rush back to their editors with the ‘hot’ international news, three months old. Today, your local Farming Lifestyles paper turns up regular as clockwork in your letter box, filled with colourful images of the latest tractors, quads, professional services and farming implements. Our forebears would consider the ability to telephone for a fertiliser spreader or well driller the next best thing to magic, but aside from the time and convenience, their need to know ‘who you’re going to call’ was much the same as ours.

Water: a divine resource by Paul Campbell

Without water, there is no life, and in rural New Zealand, unless you have a river or lake nearby, apart from rain, the obvious source will be below the earth, an underground stream or aquifer.

In many areas, it is a matter of finding such a source. For centuries, a mixture of legend and mystery has often preceded actual drilling for water. The practice of water dowsing, also called divining, to find a source to drill down to has its adherents. It involves using a forked stick, rod, pendulum or similar device to locate underground water and has long been a subject of discussion and controversy. In the classic method of using a forked stick, one fork is held in each hand with the palms upward. The dowser then walks over the area to be tested. When passing over a source of water, the butt end of the stick is supposed to rotate or be attracted downward. Water dowsers operate in rural or suburban communities where residents are uncertain as to how to locate the best supply of groundwater. The drilling and development of a well often costs a lot, so property owners turn to the water dowser for advice. A more science-based method comes from a hydrologist drawing up a geologic map of the different kinds of rock at the land surface. Some through fissures provide openings to carry water underground. Hydrologic, geologic and geophysical knowledge is needed to determine the depths and extent of the

different water-bearing strata and the quantity found in each. Information on other wells in the region is also a pointer to water sources. It all comes down to a degree of guesswork, so ultimately the hydrologist may employ a well driller to put down some test holes to see if water is

moving through an aquifer, the volume of water that can enter the well, and the effect of pumping on the water level of other wells in the area. The New Zealand Drillers Federation is a good point of contact. For advice on drilling a well, contact nzdrillersfederation.co.nz/find-a-driller.

How farming help arrives by Andy Bryenton

Vintage newspapers were filled with images in woodcut print of chipping machines, ploughs, milk separators and other modern inventions of their day, all available to the Kiwi farmers should they be willing to wait for them to come from England. In those early days, one could call for assistance on the farm with all kinds of tasks, but the time it took to reach the homestead was a deciding factor. Take the simple matter of hiring in some extra hands to bring in a harvest. When the roads around New Zealand were either tracks made of mud or simply theoretical lines drawn on a map, the only way to travel was by boat. Seasonal workers and specialists alike would turn up by sea, which led to some memorable scenes loading and unloading giant steam-powered machines like traction engines to run shuttle ploughs or threshers. The first of these roadgoing steamers arrived concurrently with the growth of the railways, and almost universally, they were made in Britain. The first steam engines arrived in the South Island rather than the north in 1863. By the latter part of the 1800s, the slow progress of traction engines from town to town to assist in farming tasks meant that people demanded the first driver’s licences. In one case, a hitch-

hiker fell off a road steamer and was killed. While in another, a man paid to walk in front of such a machine holding a lantern was crushed when he stopped to tie his shoelace, and the driver could not stop. Luckily, safety soon improved, but so too did speed. In the early 1900s, the car and truck revolutionised road transport. William McLean helped pass the law allowing the road use of cars, so long as they could not go more than 20km/h. He imported two Benz motor carriages to Wellington in 1898, but more were to follow. The first world war saw the advent of reliable aircraft. Soon it became possible to call for help in far-flung towns and provinces, having your vet or architect, engineer or stock agent land in a flat paddock using a Le Rhone aircraft or some similar model. Roads got better too, at least in the dry summer months. Today, a mobile phone call can summon any kind of farming help by van or ute within hours, not days. Much valuable data and information for the farmer come in at the speed of light

In the early days of aviation, it was not uncommon for small aircraft like this to deliver expert help to otherwise isolated farms and communities

from space, via satellite or broadband internet. In the not too distant future, parts and tools may be 3D printed in the farm shed to fix systems on the spot, or

drones could deliver items ordered from the web. All we know is that technology is bringing farming out of isolation, and that’s for the best.

An effluent system that works! by Michael Prestidge, Nevada Effluent Management Specialist

Kerry Cutler’s 500-cow dairy farm in Northland is lush with green pastures, and it doesn’t take him long to get it that way with his Nevada drag hose system! The farm has a large effluent storage pond with enough capacity to collect effluent all year round. This allows Kerry to apply large amounts when it’s most needed, and at times that fit around other key tasks. He uses a Nevada Turbostir6000 PTO stirrer to keep the pond well mixed before pumping. “We winter milk so effluent is being added to the pond all year round. We only need a few fine days and we can get stuck in and drop the pond level quickly,” he says. Kerry tried a few different methods for spreading, but none quite hit the mark. “Everything was too slow. We tried pods and other irrigators but everything was too hard on our hilly farm.” Spreading over hills can be a challenge because the irrigator needs to have stability over uneven ground, but also the application needs to be council compliant so it doesn’t result in ponding or run-off. Nevada’s drag hose system is ideal for hilly areas. With the applicator being attached to your tractor you have control and stability, and by using the RainWave™ applicator there is little chance of ponding or run-off due to its unique design, which allows larger droplets spread in a rain-like pattern. This allows the effluent to absorb into the ground. As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side, and it turned

out the Nevada solution was right under Kerry’s nose. “A neighbour bought one and was thrilled with it.” Kerry’s new system consists of a Nevada RainWave™ 3pL applicator, Rovatti TL4-100 PTO pump, 600m of heavy duty layflat hose, and a Nevada LRB800 hose reeler. This system has been the ideal solution, giving Kerry the ability to make the most of a few fine days of weather to quickly and easily spread over the entire farm. Being attached to

Hope for farmers over exclusion by Andy Bryenton

There’s new hope for farmers battling the onset of new legislation, which they, and rural advocacy groups, are calling ‘unworkable and inaccurate’. The government’s controversial livestock exclusion policy of 2020 raised the ire of farmers due to what was seen as ‘wildly inaccurate’ mapping of zones in which fencing would become mandatory. Seeking to exclude livestock from waterways in ‘low slope’ areas, the government released a map on which to base new regulations. However, farmers were shocked to see low-intensity, very steep hill country included. Places where fencing would have to be undertaken by helicopter for a negligible amount of sheep a hectare. The contentious map showed that areas labelled ‘low slope’ increased from the 3.8 million hectares indicated in 2019 to 6 million hectares. Fencing these areas would cost $4.5 billion for the farming sector. However, recent moves by the government to accept industry-driven alternatives to their ‘hard targets’ on another issue, winter grazing, have been welcomed, with Beef + Lamb New Zealand saying the move provides hope for more workable options.

“We’re not against the ‘why’: the intent of the rule is good, but we are concerned about the ‘how’,” says Beef+Lamb boss Sam McIvor. “We have been very clear that farmers need workable and relevant rules and have been advocating for effects-based approaches at the paddock scale to both intensive winter grazing and to stock exclusion, delivered through effective farm planning. “We ask the government to give certainty to farmers and to apply a common sense approach to the low-slope map. We’re very willing to work with the government on getting this right.” The government has delayed the implementation of 2020’s winter grazing regulations and accepted an interim solution in the form of an industry-developed Intensive Winter Grazing module added to farm plans this season. A reasoned, regionally-based and common sense bilateral approach to the low slope exclusion issue could follow this bridge-building success; and should, if Beef+Lamb and their many farming supporters have their say.

Packed to the nines John Deere offers a range that fills many niches, from row cropping specialist tractors all the way through to harvesters at one extreme and lawn maintenance mini tractors at the other. It’s the top bracket of big agricultural machines which has received reinforcements this year however, with the notable release of not one but three John Deere Nine Series tractors, debuted across the Tasman in Queensland this March. Soon the big fleet of tracked and wheeled high-horsepower workhorses will be visible on Kiwi soil, so why choose a John Deere Nine? The short answer is twofold. Firstly, the triple-team of new Deeres enable more ground to be covered in less time with more intensive implements. The second is ease of use, because not only is the full range equipped with JDLink integration technology, GPS and AutoTrac, they are also some of the best places to sit anywhere on the farm. Lexus, Mercedes and Bentley have been given a run for their money when it comes to the comfort of the heated, cooled and massaging seats which can be optioned into these big powerful tractors. Who said farming was far from cosmopolitan comforts? More importantly, the new Nines come equipped for hard work, with high horsepower at the driver’s fingertips. The wheeled 9R tractors pack a 13.6-litre high-efficiency diesel

engine delivering anywhere from 390 to 590 horsepower, depending on the specific build. Then there’s the option to disperse that weight across a wide set of treads. Putting power to the ground is the formula for the 9RT models in the new Deere range, and to accomplish this they employ air-cushioned walking beam suspension, in league with that big diesel’s ready supply of torque. The heavyweight in the Nine series is the 9Rx; the industry’s most powerful four-track machine, clocking in with an impressive 640 horsepower. A quadtrack setup allows this behemoth of the fields to be deceptively light-footed; multiple track widths and layouts can be deployed to ensure a gentle touch even in row cropping configurations. This trifold release makes John Deere the only major tractor producer to offer all three types of ‘power delivery’ at once; wheels, double treads and quadruple treads all in the same overarching series. Despite being released on the same day as a raft of new spraying tech and air seeding tools, and even upgrades to the smaller (but equally impressive) Eight series, John Deere’s biggest and boldest couldn’t help but stand out.

Adventure unlimited by Andy Bryenton

When Yamaha wanted a name for its new lightweight, nimble, go-anywhere adventure bike, it looked at the kind of places where this machine would excel over bigger, more bulky rivals. That’s why it chose the name be measured in making it Tenere; a double pun, because to the next petrol station not only does the name refer to feeling exhilarated rather a vast sandy desert in Chad, than beaten up. Jack of all trades doesn’t mean of opting for the big bore and stroke of a While this is screamer territory for a road master of none, however. The Tenere mono-piston, Yamaha went for a parallel car, it’s low and grabby for a bike, and it shares a rugged desert name with twin, double overhead cam setup with makes the Tenere adept at three things; machines like the Dakar and the Baja, acceleration, control and fuel economy. and out in the wild is where it wants to water cooling. The upside of this layout is torque on When the road runs out, all three are key be. If you’ve got a yearning for adventure, tap from low down in the rev range right indicators of success, and success can this is one to seek out.
